Pennsylvania gov signs anti-discrimination executive order
DC to Consider Travel Ban To Any State With AntiGay Laws
WASHINGTON, DC -- District of Columbia lawmakers will consider banning official travel by city workers to any state with laws that discriminate against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. The city’s mayor, Democrat Muriel Bowser, has already banned city travel to North Carolina because of a new law that excludes LGBT people from protections against discrimination.

HARRISBURG, PA – Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf says he’ll sign an executive order to prohibit discrimination by state contractors against people who are lesbian, gay or transgender. Wolf told WESA-FM in Pittsburgh on Wednesday that he had hoped the Legislature would pass legislation designed to outlaw discrimination based on someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity. nn
Hate Crime in Miami at Whooper Bar
MIAMI—A hate crime involving two gay tourists from Los Angeles occurred at the South Beach BK Whopper Bar (1101 Washington Ave). While the incident took place on Monday, March 14 at 3 am, information on the attack only became available recently. 24-year-old Jordan Schaeffer and his boyfriend 25-year-old Eric Danko exchanged a kiss, which led to a verbal altercation with customers at the Burger King outlet, who labeled them “faggots.” nn

PayPal Says “No” To North Carolina Over Discrimination Law
RALEIGH, NC--PayPal says it’s canceling plans to bring 400 jobs to North Carolina after lawmakers passed a law that restricts protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. The San Jose, California-based company said Tuesday it was canceling its planned expansion in Charlotte because of the law, which was signed March 23. nn

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) - The CEO of PepsiCo, Inc., a company with roots in North Carolina, has written Gov. Pat McCrory, asking him to repeal the new law preventing specific antidiscrimination rules for LGBT people for public accommodations and restroom use. In a letter hand delivered to McCrory on Friday, PepsiCo head Indra Nooyi called the law inconsistent with how her company treats its employees. Nooyi also said the law is undermining efforts to advance North Carolina’s interests, and she said she hoped McCrory would consider repealing the law when the state legislature reconvenes later this month. nn
NASHVILLE, TN - A bill that would allow mental health counselors to turn away patients based on their religious beliefs and personal principles has passed in the House in Tennessee, the latest state to introduce measures that opponents say result in legalized discrimination against gays, bisexuals and transgender people. The Senate, which already passed the measure, still would have to approve an amendment adopted by the House. nn

LINCOLN, NE--78-year-old state senator Ernie Chambers of Omaha is attempting to run out the clock on Nebraska’s legislative session with a filibuster in which he has described getting a colonoscopy and quizzed a colleague about the best way to pour a beer. The left-leaning independent chastised his fellow senators on Wednesday for rejecting a bill to legalize medical marijuana the night before, saying their decision will hurt suffering children. He said he’s also upset that lawmakers advanced a Republican-backed measure Tuesday to reinstate the winnertake-all system in presidential elections. nn

DEAR AMERICA. This morning I called up the Cracker Barrel and I had a very special gift basket prepared for Sarah Palin and her family. Items requested, Natty light, 7-11 brand beef jerky, red bull, 305cigarettes, moonshine, a sled, Drakkar Noir, a copy of Mein Kampf, an AK-47, a dead moose, and a file organizer so Bristol Palin can keep all the confusing paperwork in order for her slew of baby daddy child support payments. It should arrive in Damascus, Syria by next week. Trust me, with those items on the list, they will be seduced to make the move out of the country. I’ll be accepting all thanks, right now. KEN KEECHL
TO RUN FOR STATE HOUSE.
“I have no choice.” BY RICHARD HACK
n
April 07, 2016

FORT LAUDERDALE— Ken Keechl is angry. He’s also disappointed, disillusioned, and determined not to allow what he sees as flagrant abuse of power in the Florida state House of Representatives to go unchallenged. “I’ve been asked for years to run against George Moraitis by the Democratic party and I always hesitated to do so— until I saw the last session of the Legislature. The positions taken by George Moraitis this year are horrific. I can’t just let this go unchallenged any longer.” The former Broward County Commissioner and mayor announced that he’s running for the state house from District 93. “When I look at this Legislature, I see a group of politicians who have forgotten why they were elected in the first place. While they give handouts to the well connected, our public schools and local small businesses back home continue to be shortchanged. I’m proud of my service to Broward County and I’m running for the State House because I believe that our community deserves a Representative in tune with needs of the people he’s elected to serve.” District 93 covers the area from Boca Raton to Hollywood in eastern Broward County, and has a major LGBT constituency. “Thanks to representatives like George Moraitis, we have transgenders that can’t go to public restrooms of their choice, while
we have protections for pastors against gay people. And don’t get me started on why Moraitis thinks he has the right to tell women what they can or cannot do with their own bodies,” Keechl told the Agenda. “I’m an environmentalist, and when I watched our Legislature vote in favor of fracking, I knew I just couldn’t let it happen.” Fracking is the controversial high-pressure pumping of large volumes of water, sand and chemicals into the ground to recover oil and gas deposits. “My opponent has spent the change and to ban fracking, and last six years in Tallahassee to provide our public schools voting for every piece of antiwith the resources our students woman and anti-LGBT legislaand teachers need to give every tion to cross his desk, to allow child the excellent education the dangerous practice of frackthey deserve. said. “It’s not easy to take on the incumbent representative, and I’m going to have to raise at least $500,000 to fight for this seat. But I’m going to do it, and I will win. I have no choice.” Keechl, who’s been a lawyer for the past 30 years, has served his community as a member of the Individual Rights and Responsibilities Committee of the Florida Bar, where he focused on civil rights cases, and with Broward Lawyers Care, a non-profit that provides probono legal services for citizens in need. After serving two terms as the President of the Dolphin Democrats, Ken successfully ran for the Broward County Commission, where he was appointed Vice-Mayor in 2008 and Mayor in 2009. He makes his home in Fort Lauderdale with his husband, Ted Adcock. nn

ALL THINGS CONSIDERED
we’re not normal. Just because some would love to turn back time and have us considered criminals. Just because some would put us in institutions because we’re seen as mentally ill. Just because many of “our own” have become complacent. Yes, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality. That made a lot of people very happy, but it also made many very angry. Sure, things are better than they were ten years ago. But they are far from where they should be. Many would say this being an election year has something to do with it. Various candidates are banking on the ultra religious votes to get them elected, and they will go to any length to make it happen--at the expense of the LGBT and their rights. Some of those candidates are far from religious. In fact, if you want to get picky about things, some of them have lived less than “Christ-Like” lives, yet are bandwagon Christians for convenience. They have an audience who will listen to their hypocrisy. Those are some reasons (but not excuses) for anyone to take for granted what has been fought for and considered won. Yet, we cannot take bandages off because some wounds have healed. They are far from healed and the daily stories of what happens to the LGBT community is the reality handed right to you. I’m going to repeat a line from my last column: “STOP LEAVING IT UP TO SOMEONE ELSE to fight for what should naturally be yours. Stop thinking “it will never happen.” There is absolutely NO REASON each of us can’t take responsibility for our lives and help the lives of others to come. Didn’t our heroes of Stonewall do it (fight) for us? If “we” don’t get moving, “we” just might not have our tomorrow. NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE. It’s fun to sit back and watch a parade go by. But now more than ever, it’s time for ALL the LGBT community to get in the parade and solidify their place in life. Complacency is unacceptable. I leave you with the words of Peter Thiel: “I do think there is this danger that our society has made its peace with decline. I’d like to jolt them out of their complacency a little bit.” nn

Sexual orientation – people who are gay – was never explicitly protected under state law and is not now, despite recent court decisions that legalized same-sex marriage. These reports above are just a tiny portion of things that are being used against who we are as human beings, just because we’re LGBT. Just because we don’t live our lives the way some want us to. Just because some people would love to see us disappear. Just because some think

Once again, I have gone to one of my favorite websites, Dictonary.com for its definition of Complacency: “A feeling of quiet pleasure or security, often while unaware of some potential danger, defect, or the like; selfsatisfaction or smug satisfaction with an existing situation, condition, etc.” March 16, 2016, Christianity Today reports (in part) “Florida Gov. A BIG DEAL IN GEORGIA
n
April 07, 2016
20
The cynical — and probably obvious — view would be that Georgia Governor, Nathan Deal, was not moved to veto the state’s newly-passed anti-LGBT legislation out of concern for the reputation of the “character” of Georgians and their state. Nor did Deal likely have a humanitarian epiphany, despite his syrupy statement about Georgia being “full of loving, kind and generous people.” Let’s remember that in 2010 Deal lashed out at his then gubernatorial Republican rival, Karen Handel as “out of step with Georgia RepubliBY cans because she LINDA allegedly PENTZ supported gay adoption seven years ago.” Rather, it was the lethal onetwo punch of threatened boycotts and lawsuits that stayed his hand. Because signing the bill would have meant enduring the sounds of silence — the silence of cash registers not ringing. Long may those law suits rain down. The cash in question is almost incalculable. Esti-
mates of Georgia’s annual Hollywood revenue alone exceed $1.7 billion. Add to that corporate boycotts and the cold shoulder of major sports leagues, and signing the bill could have been fiscal suicide. We have turned an important corner. Passing anti-LGBT legislation is no longer about jeopardizing the $884 billion in annual LGBT spending power in the U.S. It’s about jeopardizing the spending power of major international corporations who support LGBT rights. This is super, and important, news. So you’d think Mississippi, the poorest state in the country, might be listening. Instead, it just passed what Ben Needham, director of the Human Rights Campaign’s southern-focused Project One America described as “probably the worst religious freedom bill to date.” That put Mississippi governor, Phil Bryant, next up in the veto chair, although all indications at press time were that he would sign the bill. (As if to exemplify how mixed up and polarized all this is, in the same week a Mississippi judged halted enforcement of the state’s ban on same-sex couples adopting children, a big win for LGBT rights.) For now, North Carolina is in the crosshairs for boycotts, demonstrations and law suits after its governor, Pat Mc-
Crory, signed his state’s antiLGBT equality bill, causing what could politely be called a hailstorm of trouble. McCrory says it’s “common sense,” not to understand that transgender women are women, a view that got nimbly turned on its head by self-described “transgender hillbilly,” James Sheffield, who posted a now viral Twitter selfie, beard and all: “@PatMcCroryNC It’s now the law for me to share a restroom with your wife.” In a more serious moment, Sheffield expostulated: “They passed a bill to keep men out of women’s rooms (which wasn’t a thing), & by doing so, they ended up putting men in women’s rooms.” And women in men’s rooms. Which was perhaps the real intention all along — to endanger transgender people rather than protect heterosexuals. That’s the only “common sense” conclusion. If not, then we’re forced to believe that our country is actually consumed with bathroom phobia which is a sad comment indeed for a nation that prides itself on being one of the most “advanced” in the world. nn

JUST THINKING OUT LOUD
HOW DO I PROVE I’M TRANSGENDER?
T
ransgender people don’t walk around with labels on their foreheads. It’s impossible to prove whether someone is transgender just by looking at them. Anyone who uses public bathrooms has likely shared a bathroom with a transgender person without noticing. But laws like North Carolina’s invite politicians, business owners, and even other bathroom goers to make snap judgments about who does and doesn’t belong in a restroom. North Carolina’s law states that people are allowed to use only certain bathrooms that correspond with their biological sex, which is stated on a person’s birth certificate. Most human beings don’t walk around carrying copies of their birth certificates, and they certainly don’t bring their birth certificates with them every time they need to use a public bathroom. But under HB 2, North Carolinians will need to be ready to prove their biological sex anytime they need to use a bathroom in a public facility or school. Other states across the country are considering “bathroom bills” that could award thousands of dollars in damages to anyone who shared a bathroom with a transgender person, creating a perverse incentive to try to seek out and accuse people who might be transgender in the bathroom.

Backlash. That’s what we’re seeing here in the flurry of anti-LGBT (and heavy on the T) legislation that’s been proposed and passed across the nation (or, in the case of Georgia, vetoed. Thank you, Gov. Deal). North Carolina is a shining turd of an example of what happens when the people in charge are a bunch of assholes. No wonder it’s called the Tar Heel State, because they’ve really stepped in it this time. In case you weren’t paying attention, North Carolina just passed the harshest anti-LGBT law in the country. It all started when Charlotte, one of the state’s more civilized cities, passed an antidiscrimination law that included protections for LGBT people. And rather than let something so terrible happen in their state, North Carolina lawmakers held a special session so they could bang out a sweeping law that banned all cities from enacting any laws that would dare to protect fags, dykes or trannies. They made sure to put particular emphasis on making sure that transgender students can’t go to the bathroom. Or, more specifically, can’t use the bathroom at school that matches their gender identity. You know, because trans students just have too many rights.
The business community has come out in strong opposition to the law. Companies like American Airlines and Bank of America are like, “Stop it, this is bad for business.” This law’s passage in spite of what corporate America wanted highlights the fissure going on in the GOP between the pro-business and pro-Jesus Republicans, two factions that used to be basically one in the same. And if you’re Michael Brown, author of Outlasting the Gay Revolution: Where Homosexual Activism Is Really Going and How to Turn the Tide, then you see these companies as just a bunch of schoolyard bullies trying to steal the Christian kid’s lunch money so that they can go spend it on sex-change operations or something. Criticism from these companies -- or anyone -- will not stand! “It is time for Christians and all people of conscience to say: ‘Enough is enough with your bullying,’” Brown writes on CharismaNews.com. “We are not going to bow down to your threats. We will do what is right, regardless of cost or consequence, and in the end, we will be vindicated for taking a stand.” Yeah! Stop trying to bully Christians out of bullying ev-
erybody else. If you’ve a threat of economic or legal significance, take it to Jesus! Specifically the Jesus we made up that hates homos and stuff. The “regardless of cost or consequence” part is intriguing. I hope that the result is both economic and spiritual bankruptcy. Brown also points out that “some of the companies protesting the loudest already have policies to protect LGBT ‘rights’ and those policies are completely unaffected by the new law.” It’s as if Brown thinks that these companies exist in a vacuum and that the LGBT people who work for them and who live in North Carolina aren’t negatively impacted by a law that basically states they aren’t worth a damn. Brown claims that “the activists who came out of the closet want to put you and me in the closet.” He adds, “That will never happen, and we will go to jail rather than compromise our convictions.” To which I say, is that a threat or a promise? It would be karmic justice if people like Brown who are so concerned about the “threat” of trans people being allowed to use bathrooms never get to take a sh*t in private again. nn

OPINION
WHO IS
Michael Brown Despite the massive cultural shift of recent years, those who value traditional marriage, gender differences and sexual purity have the opportunity to win debates in the coming years, while the gay revolution has sown the seeds of its own destruction, author Michael Brown argues in Outlasting the Gay Revolution: Where Homosexual Activism Is Really Going and How to Turn the Tide. Michael Brown holds a Ph.D. in Near Eastern Languages and Literatures from New York University and has served as a professor at a number of seminaries. He is the author of 25 books and hosts the nationally syndicated, daily talk radio show, the Line of Fire. “There are many, of course, who believe the culture wars are over and that America, from here on, will embrace homosexuality just as it embraces heterosexuality, without a second thought,” Brown writes in the introduction. But, while many believe “the complete success of the gay revolution is inevitable, ... the cultural battle is far from over.” Some of the principles described in the book are aimed at how Christians, and other social conservatives, should behave in the culture wars, such as principle No. 1, “never compromise your convictions,” and principle No. 2, “take the highest moral ground.” Other principles aim to exploit the weaknesses of the gay revolution, such as principle No. 3, “sexual purity trumps sexual anarchy,” and principle No. 5, “celebrate gender distinctions.”

H
ush Up Sweet Charlotte (Here!), a super-gay Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte drag parody/homage about the wacky Southern belle who became a “living mystery,” is an idea that probably looks better on paper than it does in reality. For years, theater companies such as Ryan Landry’s Gold Dust Orphans and David Cerda’s Hell In A Handbag, have been doing these kinds of spoof productions with far better and funnier results. It’s not a total loss. Jeffery Robertson (a.k.a. Varla Jean Merman) as bosomy and conniving cousin Melanie brings a kind of exaggerated old Hollywood femininity to the character, intentionally crossing over into caricature. Also worth mentioning are stand-up-comedianturned-actor Jason Stuart as journalist Mills and John Waters regular Mink Stole as rancid housekeeper Velma, both of whom do admirable jobs of keeping the camp coming. But the movie, written and directed by William Clift, is overly long and more than a little self-indulgent. The low-budget effects end up working against the movie as a whole and turn out to be more than a little distracting. After making the rounds of the LGBT film festival circuit in 2015, this cramped camp production is now showing on Vimeo. If you missed it the first time around, you can see it now and decide for yourself if Hush Up Sweet Charlotte should stay quiet.

It’s Miami Beach Pride Weekend! Over 130,000 will dance, celebrate, mix, mingle, selfie, dress up and eat!! And I can’t wait for my Cuban sandwich. When Mookie and I first moved here, we lived in Winston Towers in Sunny Isles. I would make it a habit to visit the former Rascal House once a week for a thick hot pastrami sandwich. The meat piled high with spicy mustard with a side order of slaw made me feel like I was back in the city. New
York in Miami, all is well. Then one afternoon one of my work buddies took me to Versailles restaurant for lunch and he ordered me the Cubano. The Cubano is heaven for the warm sandwich lover. It’s crunchy, salty, and tangy. You’ll have plenty of options at Pride for purchasing a Cuban sandwich and after that, you can make them at home. You must use Cuban bread and the secret is the pickle. Here’s my recipe!
PREP: The big prep for the Cubano is roasting your ham and pork. You can use the meat for other recipes but I like making a big batch for a brunch/lunch and having it on hand for leftover sandwiches.
1 tablespoon sea salt 3 sprig of fresh oregano ½ cup Adobo seasoning 1 cup Mojo sauce 2 cups of orange juice Juice of 4 limes Preheat oven to 450. Remove pork leg from bag and set in roasting pan for 30 minutes to bring to room temperature. Roast leg for 30 minutes at 450, then reduce to 350 and continue roasting 5 hours. (Check to make sure the pork is falling off the leg.)
THE SWEET HAM: Preheat oven to 400 place a 5 to 10 pound bone in ham (fully cooked) roast in rack pan. Add 1 cup of water. Roast for 1 hour. While roasting, mix the following together in medium bowl: ½ cup honey 1 cup brown sugar 1 tablespoon dry mustard 2 teaspoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon flour. Pour mixture over ham and reduce heat to 350 roast for another 30 minutes.
April 07, 2016
THE ROAST PORK: Refrigerate and marinate a 14 to 16 pound bone in pork leg overnight in a plastic bag with Garlic cloves (10 finely chopped)
33
ASSEMBLY Slice your Cuban bread long rolls. Toast the inside of the roll slightly in panni or grill pan. Butter both sides and add 5 pickle chips to one side. Add 3 ounces of Swiss Cheese to other side and top with 4 ounces Sweet Ham and 3 ounces Roast Pork. Add yellow mustard. Give a final press in the pan or panni! When you toss away the napkin scream “Completo Camaguey!”

he late country music legend Hank Williams deserves much better than he gets in writer/director Marc Abraham’s dim and dull biopic I Saw The Light (Sony Pictures Classics). Thankfully, actor Tom Hiddleston, plays Williams (and does the singing) with all of the luminescence he can muster, outshining his director’s lazy and low-lit screenplay to turn in a radiant, almost Oscar-caliber performance.
A co-mingling of “vintage” in black and white), performance footage, and biography, for being a movie about someone as decisive as Williams, who “didn’t give a damn if you liked him,” I Saw The Light is decidedly wishy-washy. Williams was already a serious drinker by the time he got married to the questionably talented Audrey (Elizabeth Olsen) by a justice of the peace in an Alabama service station in 1944. So you couldn’t say she drove him to drink, but she certainly didn’t do much to make his life easier.

Williams, a popular radio and roadhouse performer with lifelong back trouble (he was born with a mild case of spina bifida) and an irresistible stage presence, was also under the thumb of
his mother Lillie (out actress Cherry Jones) who took an immediate dislike to Audrey. This was probably because she saw that while Audrey loved Hank, she also saw him as her ticket to fame as a singer/songwriter in her own right.
The Williams had the kind of rocky marriage (including more than one divorce threat) about which country songs are written. Nevertheless, Hank’s undeniable talent took him many places (often without Audrey) including the interviews (shot top of the Billboard chart and the stage of the Grand Ole Opy REVIEW in Nashville. But his ongoing and debilitating health issues, heavy drinking and abuse of Williams’ grandson, singer Hank Williams III, has publicly expressed other substances, causing him his displeasure for Hiddleston’s to cancel concert dates and lose singing skills. Soon after Hiddleston’s jobs, didn’t help his case or his performance of “Move It on Over” at career for that matter. Hank III went on to critique HidJoaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of dleston’s role, saying “To do a Hank Johnny Cash in the biopic Walk Williams movie the way it should be The Line, Hiddleston stands done you need certain aspects in the “hat” and shoulders above mix to make right. Vampire Facelift:
A Lot Prettier Than It Sounds
n
April 07, 2016
42
When most people think about the Vampire Facelift or Facial, they remember Kim Kardashian crying in pain during her dramatic “reality show” procedure, which overdramatized the effects of the procedure by leaving her with a swollen and bloody face. The truth, however, is that this couldn’t be further from the real experience of having a Vampire Facelift and Facial performed by a medical professional. The procedure begins by applying a By numbing Dr. Ferdinard cream to Cabrera the face to make the treatment a pain-free experience. Like every PRP (platelet-rich plasma) treatment, we use the growth factors contained in your own blood to enhance volume to the face and create a significant improvement in your skin’s tone and texture.
The process involves using a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) from your blood and then activating the growth factors contained in the PRP. These growth factors are injected into the face using tiny needles to stimulate collagen growth and add volume, along with the option of injecting a hyaluronic acid facial filler to subtly sculpt the face with more volume and to create a more radiant and youthful look. We also use a technique called the Vampire Facial in coordination with the Facelift. The Vampire Facial involves a micro-needling roller or pen, which injects the same collagen stimulating growth factors to help generate cellular production directly to the dermis, drastically improving both skin tone and texture. Because both applications are subtle, you totally avoid the risk of having an unnatural look after either procedure. The goal of both the Vampire Facelift and Facial is to create a smooth and vibrant appearance that is both natural and youthful.
You’re probably asking yourself whether or not this is the procedure for you. No matter your age, the procedure can significantly improve your appearance. In fact, having a Vampire Facelift and Facial regularly while you’re younger will reduce the need for more major procedures and surgeries later in life. After the Vampire Facelift and Facial, your skin will continue to improve over the course of 3-4 months and the results will last for 1-2 years. It’s a perfect procedure to have done before a big event, like your wedding or high school reunion. Recovery is so short that you can return to work the next day. The Vampire Facelift and Facial might sound scary but they’re actually an incredibly successful procedure no matter what your age or skin condition. Please call the Genesis Health Institute at 954-561-3175 to schedule a complimentary consultation with Dr. Cabrera to discuss these and any other aesthetic procedures you may have questions about. nn
Dr. Ferdinand Cabrera has 33 years of experience as a General Internist. He is the founder and president of Genesis Health Institute which specializes in Functional and Anti-Aging Medicine. He can be reached at 954-561-3175, or on the Internet at www.ghinstitute. com.
