WASHINGTON, DC – President Barack Obama made history on Wednesday, saying he “personally affirms” his support for marriage equality for all Americans. “I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point, I’ve just concluded that for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married,” Obama said. During an interview with ABC reporter Robin Roberts

(which aired in full this morning on “Good Morning America”), Obama gave LGBT Americans the nod they had been waiting for after four years of coy winks concerning his “evolving” views on full marriage rights for every citizen. The president, invoking the images of same-sex families and households possessing the same goals and concerns as any straight family unit, spoke of his evolution from a supporter of civil unions to a history-making proponent of full marital rights. The president’s comments came during a week that was filled with good news for LGBT Americans. On Sunday, during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet The Press,” Vice President Joe Biden said that he is “absolutely comfortable” with gay marriage, remarks that were followed on Monday by Secretary of Education Secretary Arne ‘MARRIAGE SUPPORT’ continues on Page 12 Duncan offering

SUNSHINE STATE “Sundowned”: Wilton Drive Two-Lane Task Force Makes Report WILTON MANORS – The end of an era of sorts came this week, with the phasing out—or “sundowning”— of the Wilton Drive Task Force (WDTF), which was built into its 18-month mandate to review the two-lane initiative. The seven-member task force presented its report and recommendations to Wilton Manors City Manager Joe Gallegos and city commissioners on Tuesday. The task force recommended that the city move ahead with the plan, offering, in its words “a set of near‐ term actions to help the City ‘get its ducks in a row’ in anticipation of taking action to achieve the long‐ term vision for Wilton Drive.” The 27-page report “prioritizes the elements needed to ensure the success of the project,” said a person close to the process who requested anonymity. Foremost in those criteria is “pedestrian safety,” says the individual, “with an eye to marketing Wilton Manors as a pedestrian-friendly community, particularly on the Drive. There’s a reason there are so many night spots within a short-block radius.” The introduction of a full-blown Arts and Entertainment District will require the ability of foot traffic—in the form of shoppers, diners, and clubgoers— to move unimpeded, “creating a destination, not a thoroughfare,” explained the person. As recommended by the task force, the criteria for moving forward includes spreading the $5.5 million total cost over several phases, in order to introduce those changes incrementally. These include a one-to-three year (“Near Term”) recommendation for the city to encourage business development by “address[ing] the zoning along Wilton Drive to create a predictable environment for private investors

to redevelop properties along Wilton Drive. The zoning should continue to encourage development that enhances the pedestrian environment along the Drive, allow for parking behind the buildings, and provide appropriate buffering for the residential neighborhoods.” The task force also recommended the use of “parking revenues to the enhancement of Wilton Drive through the funding of parking facilities. The Wilton Drive Task Force recommends that ALL net income generated by the parking program be placed into the Parking Revenue Fund.” Krishan Manners, President and CEO of Wilton Manors Main Street and a member of the WDTF, is a strong proponent of the two-lane initiative, and points to the success of other cities which have adopted similar plans for downtown revival. “Delray Beach,” for one, “has experienced a renaissance along Atlantic Avenue and elsewhere,” Manners notes, citing Oakland Park, Hollywood, and other examples. The report notes that “the City will [need to] set aside funds annually for future repaving and maintenance of Wilton Drive and Dixie Highway.”

First White House LGBT Conference on Aging Held in Miami MIAMI - On Monday, over 150 LGBT activists and allies attended the first White House LGBT Conference on Aging, which was held at the University of Miami Clinical Research Building. The one-day conference was attended by advocates and stakeholders from across the Sunshine State, as well as Obama Administration officials and state, federal, and municipal lawmakers. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fort Lauderdale) spoke of the unique challenges facing South Florida’s aging LGBT population. “I represent one of the largest gay

populations in the country. We have had for many years a generation of the LGBT community that has been able to live openly,” she noted. “Now, we have unique and specific issues for LGBT seniors that we’re aware of. They always existed, it’s just that they existed in the shadows and there were no services and no attempts to help them.”

REP. DEBBIE WASSERMAN-SCHULTZ (D-FL)

Wasserman Schultz, who also serves as chair of the Democratic National Committee, added that “It’s important to have the White House conference on aging because now we can specifically identify and assist when there are unique issues, like there are unique issues with every type of senior community.” Also attending was Rafael Bostic, Assistant Secretary of Housing and Urban Development for Policy Development and Research, and Kathy Greenlee, the openly gay Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services Department for Aging. “These LGBT elder issues are real, and they are going to get bigger as we go on,” said Bostic, who is openly gay. “We’ve got a wave of elders coming in our community and we need to be ready for them.”

Jim Crochet, ombudsman for the Florida Department of Elder Affairs’ Long-Term Care Program, said his office seeks LGBT persons who can be trained to assist elderly gays and lesbians. This marks “the first time that the LGBT issue has ever been raised” by Elder Affairs, Crochet said. Michael Adams, the executive director of New York-based SAGE USA, pointed to such numbers as the estimated two million LGBT Americans who are seniors, a statistic that represents roughly four percent of the total U.S. population over age 65. “LGBT adults are four times less likely to have children, twice as likely in their old age to be single and live alone,” noted Adams. “They’re more likely to be disconnected from their family of origin. It makes this population particularly vulnerable.”H

Gay Romney Spokesman Resigns amid Calls for Ouster from Religious Right Condemnation from “Family” Groups Reveals Tenuous Nature of Republican Tolerance By JOE HARRIS

PITTSBURGH, PA — Although he publicly defended the hiring of Richard Grenell—the openly gay foreign policy spokesman hired by Republican Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign two weeks ago—the departure of the former Bush State Department aide sent a signal to the religious and social conservative wing of the Republican Party, who remain unconvinced of the presumptive nominee’s commitment to their principles in the public policy arena. While Romney called Grenell, who resigned on May 1, a “capable individual” and said that he had wanted him to stay on his job, within hours the former Massachusetts governor was meeting behind closed doors with former rival Rick Santorum, who had won his conservative credentials early in the primary season. LGBT rights groups say that Grenell’s appointment—and sudden departure— underscore the discomfort with which the religious and social conservative elements of the Republican Party’s base feel towards a GOP “big tent” that

includes gay members. Grenell, who was hired in late April as the spokesman for Romney on matters of foreign policy and national security, previously served as communications director for the U.S. mission to the United Nations.

GRENELL: BACK TO TWEETING?

Grenell’s support for marriage equality earned him sharp rebukes from members of the religious right because of his sexual identity. “Romney picks out & loud gay as a spokesman,” tweeted American Family Association (AFA) spokesman Bryan Fischer after Grenell’s appointment. Referring to Romney,

WASHINGTON, DC – During an appearance this Sunday on “Meet the Press,” Vice President Joseph Biden Jr. said that he is “comfortable” with gay marriages, and that marriage equality would simply be extending the same rights to all Americans, regardless of the sexual identity. Speaking with NBC’s David Gregory, Biden said “I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women and heterosexual men and women marrying one another are entitled to the same exact rights, all the civil rights, all the civil liberties.” “I just think that the good news is that as more and more Americans come to understand what this is all about is a simple proposition. Who do you love? Who do you love?” Biden asked rhetorically. “And will you be loyal to the person you love? And that’s what people are finding out is what, what all marriages, at their root, are

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – An openly gay student who was threatened by bullies was expelled this week as a consequence of attempting his own defense by firing a stun gun. Darnell “Dynasty” Young became the target of bullies after he transferred to Arsenal Technical High School last year. The openly gay 17 year old was harassed by classmates who followed him to his house, spread rumors about his sexual activities, and threw bottles at him. He told the Star that he contemplated suicide but decided against it. Young’s mother reported the harassment to school officials several times, but was told that administrators were powerless to act because her son wasn’t able to identify his tormentors. School principal Larry Yarrell is reported to have said, “If you wear female apparel, then kids are kids and they’re going to say whatever it is that they want to say. Because you want to

Fischer added “If personnel is policy, his message to the pro-family community: drop dead.” Later, appearing on CNN, Fischer declared that “The homosexual agenda represents the single-greatest threat to religious liberty and freedom of association in America today.” Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council (FRC) condemned Grenell’s political activism in seeking to classify “sexual orientation”as a basic human right under the U.N. Charter, and speculated that a Grenell who was highly-placed in the State Department would in effect serve as a gay “mole.” “While past performance is not a guarantee of future results,” Perkins offered, “there is strong evidence that Grenell would lobby for foreign policy more in line with the current administration than the last Republican one.” Former FRC president Gary Bauer added, “His appointment was disappointing because it comes at a time when the Romney campaign should be reaching out to the conservative base. Instead, this appointment seems like a slap

at the base.” “It’s a little disconcerting to see a man just hired by the Romney campaign write passionately about how ‘gays are going to win support for their political issues,’” posted Matthew J. Franck, Director of the William E. and Carol G. Simon Center on Religion and the Constitution at the Witherspoon Institute in Princeton, New Jersey, online at nationalreview.com. Grenell, 45, graduated with a master’s degree from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. In 2001, he was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve as Director of Communications and Public Diplomacy for the United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Following his resignation from the Romney campaign, Grenell said that felt his ability to perform his job was “greatly diminished by the hyper-partisan discussion of personal issues.” H

Young, frightened for his life, fired the weapon into the air, drawing the attention of school security personnel, who arrested him. “While the district does not condone bullying, it also does not allow weapons to be brought on our school campuses for any reason,” an Indianapolis Public Schools spokeswoman said. “Students who violate this rule will be held accountable.” Young will be eligible to return to classes in January.

ELECTION SPECIAL

NC Voters Ban Marriage Equality RALEIGH, NC – Voters in North Carolina overwhelmingly rejected marriage equality on Tuesday, with 61 percent voting in favor of Amendment One, which enshrines the definition of marriage as between a man and a woman in the Tar Heel State’s constitution, making it the 30th state in the nation and the last in the South to add such a definition to its governing document. Exit polling data shows that voters split largely along generational demographics, with younger members of the electorate opposing Amendment One. According to the State Board of Elections, approximately 500,000 people cast ballots in early voting—a primary record for the state. The victory by a margin of more than 20 points came after acrimonious weeks

of campaigning by opponents and supporters of the measure, and millions of dollars spent to win the hearts and minds of the electorate. “We are not anti-gay—we are promarriage,” said Tami Fitzgerald, the chairwoman of Vote for Marriage NC, at a victory rally in Raleigh. “And the point, the whole point is simply that you don’t rewrite the nature of God’s design for marriage based on the demands of a group of adults.” Marriage equality supporters raised record amounts of donation money to fight the amendment, which reads “marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this state.” Opponents of Amendment One warned that along with denying the legality of all types of same-sex unions, the measure could also affect over 150,000 heterosexual couples who cohabitate but aren’t married, invalidating domestic violence regulations, child visitation and custody arrangements, and hospital access. Who Would Brutalize a Sightless Man?

Aftermath of Abduction and Assault is Ordeal of Its Own By CLIFF DUNN

Part 2 of a 2-part Series WILTON MANORS – In the aftermath of his nearly three-hour ordeal with a man whom he says held him against his will in his own apartment, Robert Jacobs, a seeingimpaired part-time resident of Wilton Manors, describes a twilight period of anxiety, confusion, and conflicting emotions which ended in a restless sleep after being held against his will after a home invasion. As we reported in last week’s Agenda (“Violent Predator Assaults SightImpaired Man”), a local drifter and suspected hustler who was known to Jacobs by voice (and who we’ll call “Jim” for the sake of this article), met the Boston-native in the early morning hours of March 17, as Jacobs returned home from a visiting a friend a few miles away in Fort Lauderdale’s city limits. It was the beginning of a harrowing experience, recounted in the May 3 Agenda (the complete story can also be read online at floridaagenda. com/2012/05/03/violent-predatorassaults-sight-impaired-gay-man). Following Jim’s departure at around 5:30 a.m., his victim fell into a fitful sleep that was broken by the ringtone of Jacobs’ iPhone. “I went to sleep and woke up when the phone rang,” Jacobs relates. When the phone rang a few hours later, it was mid-morning on March 17—St. Patrick’s Day—but Jacobs was anything but cheerful. Jim’s violent assault had left Jacobs’ ribs badly injured and bruised, and it was with both relief and shame that Jacobs answered the phone and relayed the events of the past few hours to a sympathetic friend. That person came to Jacobs’ apartment, where he found his sightless friend demoralized and injured. Although another friend, who is a doctor, came to check on Jacobs’ injuries, the victim was more interested in reporting the crime to the Wilton Manors police.

JACOBS IS HOPEFUL AFTER ABDUCTION

Unfortunately, Jacobs felt his complaint was not being taken seriously when he first reported the crime. It was only after the detective currently assigned to the case, Det. Biagio Balustreri, learned the details of Jacobs’ ordeal, that he began to be heard. “He overheard the original detective and asked to be assigned,” remarks a grateful Jacobs. “He called me and said ‘I want to hear your story,’ and he did—he interviewed me for over two hours and took down every detail.” According to Jacobs, the man we refer to as Jim is well known to the case detective as someone with a history of preying upon vulnerable men. “Look at the guy whose apartment he took me to before he came to my place,” Jacobs says about the man who referred to Jim as his “master.” Although he wouldn’t comment about an open case, Wilton Manors Police Chief Paul O’Connell advises that anyone out on the city’s streets after dark must be judicious in whom they are engaging. He also told the Agenda “I’m a firm believer in the ‘wolf pack’ theory. Travel like a wolf. Travel like a pack.” Jacobs himself is looking forward to the prosecution of Jim. Because of the peculiarities of Florida law, Jacobs— as a sightless man—is not eligible for the state’s criminal law definition of an “eyewitness.” “This is why anyone who has any information about being attacked, or held against his will, or threatened by a person who sounds like [ Jim], should contact Wilton Manors Police,” urges Jacobs. “We have to help them put this guy away.” H

Australian Leader Takes Heat for Pro-LGBT Policies MELBOURNE, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA – The leader of Australia’s most densely-populated state is under fire for his plans to form an advisory panel to focus on LGBT issues. Ted Baillieu, Premier of Victoria, has promised to appoint members of the southwestern Australian region’s LGBT community to advise senior government ministers on matters including HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention, bullying, gay teen suicide, and an aging gay population. The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (GLBTI) Health and Wellbeing Committee— which will be appointed by Victoria Minister of Health David Davis and Minister of Mental Health, Women’s Affairs, and Community Services— has received wide praise from LGBT rights groups and others, but some conservative Members of Parliament (MPs) say that such a body is unnecessary and an overreaction to a problem that doesn’t exist. “I don’t see what used to be known as ‘poofter-bashing’ happening, and I don’t see overt discrimination,” one senior MP told The Sunday Age newspaper. “It’s unnecessary. You don’t need a committee for everything.” “Poofter” is a negative colloquialism used to describe homosexuals in the United Kingdom and other places with close cultural ties to the U.K., including Australia. Experts on Australian politics say that the idea of a ministerial-level advisory committee was advocated by both of the state’s major political parties prior to 2010 state elections, as each side attempted to net progressive voters in the urban areas, including Melbourne, the state capital. Minister of Health Davis applauded the plans for the GLBTI Committee, saying it will give gay rights advocates direct access to government officials and to shaping policies. He also told reporters that the government is considering “different testing approaches” to HIV

- including “rapid testing,” which enables individuals to receive HIV test results within minutes, rather than weeks as is currently the case. Public health experts say that the island nation’s HIV-screening methods are behind those employed by the rest of the industrialized world. “We’re aware of some of the international approaches,” remarked Davis, “and this would be a useful point for the ministerial advisory committee to give some direct advice on.” “A Melbournian must wait up to two weeks for their HIV result, while a Londoner or a San Franciscan waits 20 minutes,” agreed Victorian AIDS Council executive director Matt Dixon. “Australia is lagging behind the rest of the world regarding this.”

ARCHBISHOP Peter Akwasi Sarpong

African Bishop: Marriage Equality Is an “Abomination to Society” ACCRA, GHANA - The leader of the Roman Catholic dioceses in the West African nation of Ghana called gay marriage “an abomination” that members of the faith should oppose. The Most Reverend Peter Akwasi Sarpong, Archbishop Emeritus of Kumasi, condemned secular attempts to change the definition of the sacrament of marriage, defined as between a man and a woman, and said that “politicizing the essential function of the church could only

be detrimental to the state, and the church must stand against political intimidation, bigotry, and deceit.” Sarpong called upon Roman Catholic Church officials to remember their obligation of guiding the faithful through the administration of holy sacraments including baptism, confirmation, the Eucharist, and marriage, and added that it is the function of the church to “[assist] the state” in those policy areas “where the state fell short.” The Roman Catholic dioceses of Ghana—which lean towards the more conservative principles of the 2,000 year old institution—supply priests for many underserved regions in the U.S.

Russian LGBT Rights Advocate Convicted of “Promoting Homosexuality” ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA – A prominent member of Russia’s gay rights movement was convicted on Friday of promoting homosexuality under a new municipal statute that has been denounced as homophobic by international rights organizations, including Amnesty International. Nikolay Alexeyev, the founder of Moscow Gay PRIDE, was fined the equivalent of $167 (USD)— the lowest amount permissible—in the nation’s first prosecution under the controversial new legislation, which calls for fines ranging from $167 (USD) to $16,700 (USD) for the crime of “publicly spreading information capable to harm the health, moral and spiritual development of under-age persons including forming in them deformed notions of social equality of traditional and nontraditional marital relations.” Prosecutors accused Alexeyev of spreading homosexual “propaganda” after he was arrested for picketing in front of St. Petersburg city hall last month holding a sign that read “Homosexuality is not a perversion. Perversion is hockey on the grass and ballet on ice.”

MAY 10, 2012 H 9

The trial is the first in Russia since the Soviet-era in which a defendant was prosecuted on a homosexualrelated charge. In the Soviet era, LGBT persons were often imprisoned for lengthy sentences. Both Russian and international human rights groups have denounced the law as violating both the Russian national constitution and the Geneva Convention on Human Rights. “Such laws threaten freedom of expression and fuel discrimination against the city’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex community,” said John Dalhuisen, Amnesty International’s Director for Europe and Central Asia, in a statement. “Russian leaders are floating with the current and close their eyes on the prosecution of homosexuals because for the Kremlin a majority is always right especially when this view is also backed by the Orthodox Church,” explained Valery Borshchev, a member of the Presidential Council on Human Rights, a board that advises the Kremlin’s leadership. “It is a homophobic law and it makes Russia look very uncivilized in the eyes of the civilized world.” Anti-gay ordinances similar to St. Petersburg’s have recently been passed in the Arkhangelsk and Ryazan, and two additional cities, Novosibirsk and Samara, are likewise considering such measures, as is the Duma, the lower house of Russia’s parliament. Polls show that 85 percent of Russians consider homosexuality to be morally unacceptable. H

Our Mothers’ Sons CLIFF DUNN, EDITOR

“All women become like their mothers. That is their tragedy. No man does. That’s his.” Oscar Wilde

I

have a vivid childhood memory of my mother which had a lasting impact on the man I would become. Like a lot of kids, I had to endure bullies at various times growing up (my high school bully ended up marrying the great-grand-whatever of FDR: talk about your cruel injustices), but I was fortunate to have been inculcated at an early age to stand up for myself. This was a lesson learned from Mom, and it stems from an incident that occurred when I was around five years old. (This story dates practically back to the Stone Age, so I ask you to indulge my fancy.) My mother was born the youngest of five into a chaotic (and not very warm) Italian family, where competition for resources (including parental love) was fierce. It instilled in her a “Lord of the Flies” sensibility about the way the world works that still staggers me when I consider what a generally cheerful person she was. A single parent at a time when that condition made “the marrieds’s” eyes roll with judgment (this WAS the 1960s), Mom began a tradition while I was still very young of bringing me to see the circus whenever it came to town—the “circus” meaning Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey; “town” referring to Madison Square Garden in midtown Manhattan. Another family “tradition” was an early admonition that, should we ever find ourselves separated in a public place for any length of time, I was to seek out the

nearest adult—check that: the nearest FEMALE adult—and tell her that I couldn’t find my mommy. I don’t know if this is still the fashion as it was then, but in public places (movie theaters, restaurants, shopping centers), my mother would always escort the post-toddler and prepre-adolescent me to the women’s facilities whenever the call of nature summoned me to my youthful business. Insofar as my earliest memories can recollect, this was more or less de rigueur until one year when Mom took me to see the circus when it came to town. As Mom and I arrived at the Garden on the winter afternoon in question I—with visions of clowns, and acrobats, and elephants dancing inside my head—made the obligatory pit stop at the ladies’ room. It is here that our story gets good. Unlike the previous occasions when my mom would usher me into the restroom and make for the nearest stall, this time we were challenged by the attending matron (think: restroom attendant but dressed like a nurse, and with more attitude). The selfsame lady—a mature African American woman who in memory was built like former L.A. Ram Rosie Grier— challenged Mom and me as we attempted to pass the threshold of the lavatoire femmes. I remember the woman telling her “He’s not coming in here,” referring to me, and the very idea that I might profane the porcelain conveyances intended “For Women Only.” My mother informed the attendant woman that I “certainly [wasn’t] going to use the Men’s Room by” myself, to which the matron restated her non-negotiable moral position (and shifted her physical one in front of the breezeway to accentuate the point). My mother—who could ignore a person like no one could when she put her mind to it—turned her back to the obviously deranged bathroom attendant and proceeded to shoo me through the entrance. It’s possible that Mom brushed past—and into—the woman as she walked past. Admittedly, the details after 40 years

have grown hazy, but sometime around this point, the matron gave my mother a shove, and that’s when all Hell broke loose. Two Marine Corps-serving brothers had taught (and bullied) my mother into standing up for herself, and in moments where her “Sicilian” was up, she chucked suggestions of rationality and accountability to the wind. In a physical confrontation that resembled nothing so much as a cartoon knock-down-dragout—in which the participants roll across the floor in a literal ball of flailing arms, legs, and, in this case, handbags—Mom and the matron did what Joe Frazier would do to Muhammad Ali three years later in the same venue (just not in the ladies’ room). Things snap back into clarity when I recall that the matron—who by this time was locked in mortal combat with Mom in one of the W.C.’s stalls—pulled a street move and, clutching the crown of Mom’s head, grabbed hold of her Saks Fifth Avenue wig and flung it into the toilet. Whatever Mom felt, it must have been the equivalent of seeing “red,” an anger that bears a startling—and frightening— resemblance to a murderous rage, took hold and, reaching her arm all the way behind her, as my Marine Uncle Ferdy had taught her, she slugged the momentarily triumphant matron in the jaw with such force that it rattled her brain around in its constraining pan and knocked the woman out cold. The circus was pretty good, too. Whatever adjectives conjure when you consider the actions of Chelisa Grimes, the Indianapolis mother who sent her son to school with a stun gun after he was subjected to taunts, harassment, bullying, and eventually violence for months, her words—“What is a parent to do when she has done everything that she felt she was supposed to do? There was nothing else left for me to do but protect my child.”— resonate in a language that is unique to that indomitable species we call mom. I miss mine every day. H

Romney House Rules:

Reversal over Gay Aide is Latest in Long Line of Sellouts to LGBT Americans

By Marc Paige

When Mitt Romney selected a gay man, Richard Grenell, as his Foreign Policy and National Security Spokesman, the Log Cabin Republicans, GOProud, and LGBT conservatives everywhere hailed this appointment as proof that Romney, in his heart, was a fair man who will do right by the gay community. But it took only ten days for Grenell to be gone, and Romney’s anti-gay bona fides to be stronger than ever. Grenell’s decision to leave the Romney presidential campaign came after a busy week of foreign policy news. While Grenell was allowed to listen in on a key press call on foreign policy, the New York Times reported that he was neither introduced at the beginning of the call, nor allowed to speak during the conversation. Apparently, this humiliation was too much for Grenell, appointed to a position where relationships with reporters are vital to success. Grenell’s letter of resignation thanked Romney “for his belief in me and my abilities and his clear message to me that being openly gay was a non-issue for him and his team,” and placed the blame for

his departure on “the hyper-partisan discussion of personal issues. Furious voices on the right came fast to condemn Romney when he initially selected Grenell, the loudest being Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association. After Fischer took credit for Grenell’s resignation, his directive to Romney going forward was unequivocal: “I will flat-out guarantee you Romney is not going to make this mistake again. There is no way in the world that Mitt Romney is going to put a homosexual activist in any position of importance in his campaign.” At no point during the Grenell affair did Romney publicly speak out against the ugly voices of bigotry coming from the right. That would have taken conviction and leadership. In his statement of regret over Grenell’s resignation, Romney’s language contained a dog whistle to the right to reassure them that he remains one of them: “We select people not based upon their ethnicity or their ‘sexual preference’...” (to be read as a choice and changeable), avoiding the

his own “public” support on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “It’s interesting, some of this is also generational,” President Obama offered. “You know when I go to college campuses, sometimes I talk to college Republicans who think that I have terrible policies on the economy, on foreign policy, but are very clear that when it comes to same sex equality or, you know, believe in equality. They are much more comfortable with it. You know, Malia and Sasha [the president and Mrs. Obama’s daughters], they have friends whose parents are samesex couples. There have been times where Michelle and I have been sitting around the dinner table and we’re talking about their friends and their parents and Malia and Sasha, it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently. It doesn’t make sense to them and frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective.” By publically announcing his support, Obama was formalizing a

process that has already begun, with the rollback of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT), and the Justice Department ending its defense of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)—which defines marriage as a legal union between a man and a woman—in court. Analysts say that the president is taking some political risk in his overt support for same-sex marriage. In 2008, his presidential campaign won North Carolina’s 15 electoral votes by a 0.3 percent margin of victory. On Tuesday, the pivotal swing state’s voters overwhelmingly—61 to 39 percent—passed legislation which enshrines the definition of marriage as between a man and a woman in the state constitution. For Obama, it will be a long road until November. H

accurate “sexual orientation” (derided by the right for its intrinsic and unchangeable connotation). What does all this mean for the November election? LGBT voters are a small constituency, representing perhaps five percent of the voting population. But a growing number of young heterosexuals see LGBT equality as the civil rights issue of our time. The Grenell debacle has reminded young voters, as well as those with gay loved ones, that a Romney presidency, ruled by the right, will reverse the forward trajectory of LGBT equality in America. After his victory, an emboldened Bryan

Fischer told The Nation magazine that candidate Romney must commit to other anti-gay measures, including vetoing the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) if it reaches his desk. During his failed U.S. Senate run in 1994, Romney made a commitment to Massachusetts’ Log Cabin Republicans to co-sponsor ENDA at the federal level. But in 2007 Romney told Tim Russert on “Meet The Press” that he would not support ENDA at the federal level. When Russert challenged this about face, Romney was unfazed: “Oh, Tim, if you’re looking to someone who’s never changed any positions on any policies, then I’m not your guy.” Now there’s a solid Romney conviction.H

SPOTLIGHT: STEPHEN FALLON

Stephen Fallon Invites You to LATINOS SALUD: Gay Latinos’ Home in the Gayborhood By Dale Madison Stephen Fallon, the Executive Director of Latinos Salud, knows his way around an HIV/AIDS service organization, having worked in that niche of the non-profit industry since 1995. In 2000, he began working with gay and minority-based agencies and clinics that wanted to expand their HIV prevention and support services. “I’ve met some great people, helping agencies in 40 states through my consultancy,” says Fallon. Fallon, a Broward County native, recounts that he was made aware in 2008 of a sudden gap in HIV prevention service for gay Latinos. (Fallon reminds us, too, that the Greater Fort Lauderdale area now ranks second in the nation in its rate of both new HIV infections and new AIDS diagnoses: “I can’t think of a better place to devote my energies in the HIV field.”) He says that Latinos Salud’s mission is to “provide client-centered, culturally competent health education and integrated preventive health services to Broward County’s Latino residents in order to reduce the burden

of communicable diseases.” The non-profit has a range of programs it offers to clients, all of which focus on HIV: prevention workshops, counseling for both HIVnegative Latino men and for persons living with HIV/AIDS. They have also recently added HIV rapid testing. Says Fallon: “Latinos Salud has a unique model for all of our services. We don’t preach, lecture, or tell our visitors to take a number. Instead, all of our services take place in a communitybuilding context.” The organization focuses on individual needs, rather than taking a “one-size-fits-all” approach. “We have networking dinners that teach Latino guys to become leaders,” says Fallon. “We help guys one-on-one if they want to develop their resumes, practice interviewing skills, or plan their next steps in a relationship. We also host fun events at the agency and off-site, where young guys find support and

take pride in pulling an event together.” Fallon and his team conduct educational sessions and meetings to reach their target audience. “Our SOMOS program offers a monthly workshop that covers everything from dating vs. hooking up, to the mechanics of safer sex, to special monthly themes of interest to Latino guys, ages 18 to 30,” says Fallon. “Our JUNTOS Popular Opinion Leader program offers a foursession leadership development series each month, that empowers Latino guys 25 to 44 to create solutions in their community, all while having a great time.” To familiarize the Latino community with its work, Latinos Salud has a number of upcoming events open to the public, including a barbecue on April 28 at their 2330 Wilton Drive office, which will be open to Latino guys age 18 to 30. On May 12, the group will host a community leaders’ reunion event, open to Latinos and

others. And on May 18, Fallon invites the community to their pre-AIDS Walk launch party, with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and prizes. In spite of economic challenges, and a dwindling federal budget to support many worthwhile programs, the lights are on late at Latinos Salud’s office, with staff onsite Monday through Friday between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., and sometimes later. “Any Latino gay guy can come in,” Fallon says. “You don’t have to have an appointment, or even a clear idea of what you want to do here. You’re welcome to use our guest computers, our Wi-Fi, and visit.” Fallon says that despite an apparent focus on a narrow segment, the work of Latinos Salud (which means “Healthy Latinos” in Spanish) has a far-reaching impact. “Latino guys are part of your community: one-in-five Broward residents is Latino, even if your friends do not speak to you in Spanish.” For more information, visit latinossalud.org.H

GUILTY PLEASURES: wig ministries Taking PRIDE in Being Gay—Everyday

W

By Dale Madison

hen Rev. Jamie N. Grace was deciding upon the mission for WIG Ministries, he knew that at its heart it needed to focus on the youth of the LGBT community. Grace says he founded WIG (an acronym for “Wild Inspirational Gatherings”) because he was tired of watching news reports of gay kids—many depressed and unable to find a reason to explore their wonderful young lives— committing suicide, and he decided to take action. That decision comes to its fruition on Wednesday, May 16, with the first meeting of WIG Ministries at The Manor Restaurant and Complex in Wilton Manors. “I want not just young people but people of all ages,” insists Grace, who adds that “it’s not just about being gay, but about discussing everything from being masculine to line dancing, from music to getting older, from twinks to Bears, and every other aspect of gay life.”

“This is about teaching the next generation,” Grace explains. “That’s why I need all kinds of people to be involved. Every gay person struggles and strives to understand the nature of spirituality. WIG will do exactly that, with a framework that’s half spiritual and half education,” he says. “I came from a New England Jewish background,” Grace recalls, “and my vision is to inspire kids to this life and be proud of their being gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, or transgender.” Says Grace: “Folks have to realize that gays are the ‘other chosen people,’ and being chosen isn’t a choice, it’s a blessing, a miracle.” He sums up the purpose behind the ministry as “Being proud of who you are and what you are.” He is also careful to point out what WIG Ministries is not. “This is not going to be a church type of atmosphere,” he insists. “It’s to be a cool space for all to come and enjoy. We are going to have a ‘Gangster Choir.’ As I call it, we will have three ‘fingers:’ WIGsters,

videos, and limo rides. Many of these kids have never experienced any of these, and many have lived in fear of being found out. I want them to learn to be able to live proudly,” adds Grace. “Right now, we have 3,400 Facebook friends, and it’s growing every day. Our first WIG Revival on May 16 will be followed by a private meet-and-greet with libations and appetizers,” Grace notes. He says of the event “It’s a musical, it’s a revival—

no it’s Gay Pride every Wednesday night!” adding “I expect really friendly people, and The Manor has been so helpful in getting

the ball rolling. We are also inviting artists in the area to display their works.” “I am also looking for local impersonators to help entertain. So far I have Joan Rivers and Jennifer Hudson, Cher, Divine, and Pink—so I think it’s going to just be a great evening of getting people together.” Grace then shares with a smile, “I used to be an impersonator by the name of ‘Trinity,’ so she may even make an appearance.” The WIG minister says that there is a suggested donation of $10.00 for the May 16 Revival, with VIP tickets available for $30.00. Grace is quick to point out that this isn’t a “cover charge.” “No one will be turned away due to lack of funds,” adding that “This is just too important.” For more information, go to wigministeries.org. CHOKE ME By JUSTIN JONES

I like being choked. A little. My experience tells me this isn’t an uncommon want. Before you get your panties in a bunch, I’m not talking erotic asphyxia. At least not what comes to mind when you hear the term “erotic asphyxia”—I don’t enjoy being strangled to the point of passing out or anything. I prefer the cuddle-choke. Let me explain. I met a cute guy at a bar recently. He was tall and masculine, rugged with that oh-so-desirable “straight-acting” quality about him. And to top it off, he was sweet. Very sweet. He told me I was “f***ing cute,” and showed jealousy when I spoke to other men. When I met the guy, I told him right away I wasn’t good for a hook-up. Not my style. He appreciated it. He thought it was adorable, he said, and he respected my boundaries. Of course, as the night waned, I wanted him to want to take me home—regardless of whether I was going to or not. At the end of the night, as we stood outside with my friends, he talked to me about how much he liked tinkering with his car. He told me about his dog. And he reminded me that he thought I was attractive. In other words, he sealed the deal. He saw that I was his, and my “no hookups” policy went out the door. “So do I get to take you home?” he asked. “I guess,” I smiled. “But only to cuddle.” “Deal.” Later, in his messy bedroom, we lay in our underwear: I in a fetal position, him behind, holding me. I felt his big chest against my back, his scruffy face

in the crook of my neck, his big arms around my waist, pushing my butt against his—ahem. Anyway, it was nice. I felt sexy, yes. I felt wanted. But more than that, I felt safe. I felt like he was a protector of sorts. A very schoolgirl thing for me to think, sure, but I felt it nonetheless. As we lay there, his hand caressed my chest and made its way up to my throat, where it lingered for a little while, and continued over my face. He touched my cheek with the back of his hand. He patted my hair. And then he returned his hand to my throat. He didn’t apply pressure or anything, but for some reason this act alone made me feel safer still. I gave his hand around my neck a gentle nudge. He pushed into me harder and squeezed it. Just a little. The act aroused me immediately. It didn’t hurt, and I could still breathe. It was odd, this feeling. Like it made him more dominant in my eyes, but also somehow more of a protector. This is the cuddle-choke: a passionate, twisted way of cuddling with someone in a way that shows off dominance—and affection. My ex introduced me to this. Maybe that’s why it holds such significance for me. Like he’s still there, somehow. As if it’s one part of him I can’t let go. Or, more likely, it’s just us boys-prudes in the street, but freaks in the bed. H Justin Jones, 25, is a writer based in Minneapolis. MANGO CHUTNEY

T

By JEAN DOHERTY

his time of the year in South Florida is Mango time. I have them in abundance in my back yard and will have them well into June. So it’s chutney makin’ time. There is no limit to the number of chutneys you can make, as one can be made from virtually any vegetable or fruit; and herbs and spices; or a combination of them all. The only limit is your imagination. Chutneys come in two major groups, sweet and hot; both forms usually contain various spices, including chili, and they only differ by their flavor. Easy recipe!

• 2½ cups of diced mangos (this will • determine the amount of finished chutney) • about a 1 inch piece of peeled fresh ginger • 1 Scotch bonnet pepper, minced • 1 clove garlic, minced • ¼ teaspoon salt • ½ cup of cider or rice vinegar • ½ cup of firmly packed light brown sugar • ½ cup raisins or currants • Freshly ground black pepper • ¼ teaspoon red chili pepper flakes

Put all ingredients in a medium sized thick-assed saucepan. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat to low, and simmer until thick, about 25 minutes, stirring often to keep it from sticking. Let it cool, and store in an airtight container. See? Easy..you are the chef!

Although born in Dublin, Ireland, chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

How working out can muscle up your mind and spirit!

Y

Bytom bonanti

ou’ve probably spent enough time in the gym to realize that there are real tangible results that come from pumping iron and churning out cardio. Granite glutes, bulging biceps, a sexy, cut six-pack are but a few of the results of all your sweaty hard labor. But did you also know that exercise can relieve stress and pressure at work, help you think like a creative whiz kid on your feet and generally make you feel rejuvenated and invincible? The benefits of working out the body go way beyond just looking good and showing it off and here’s how! Studies have proven that regular cardio work can enhance the ability of neurotransmitters in the brain to work faster. This higher ability won’t replace a good education or being generally streetsmart, but it can help you to think clearer, quicker and more creatively. As a trainer, I find that clients who are anxious and stressed, over worked, or generally depressed and tired, report feeling energized and upbeat after early morning exercise. As a result, they are more relaxed and confident all day at work, and seem to think more clearly and creatively on the job. While a lot of people cannot realistically work out before work, those clients who do regular cardio and weight training throughout their busy week report basically the same increase in energy, confidence and creativity. The feelings you get after a workout, namely the adrenaline rush and the feeling of overall accomplishment can lift you spirits and boost your energy levels all day long. Do you come home from work and crash in exhaustion? Does your heart race when you’re stuck in traffic before a big presentation or meeting? You have the power to change this misery. Start doing cardio, or alter your present cardio routine and don’t forget to pump some iron while you are at it! You might think these activities would add to your overall feelings

of stress and tiredness, but you are wrong. Psychologists say that a key element behind failing under pressure is physical fatigue. Regular cardio (running, biking or swimming) actually energizes you and it charges up your brain and body for tough situations – like your ball-busting boss, or those whining do-nothing co-workers who grate on your nerves and bring you down. Throwing the weights around helps you to alleviate frustration and pent-up aggression as you build gorgeous muscles in the process! If you have trouble sleeping, you’re not alone. Sleep deprivation can literally make you crazy. Without enough good quality sleep-8 to 10 hours a night- you will not be able to perform at work, you will feel frazzled and foggy and lack of sleep can also make you store fat more easily. Instead of groping for another sleeping pill, go for the treadmill instead. Regular cardio exercise lowers your resting pulse rate, can lower blood pressure, revs up your metabolism, improves digestion, and biologically assists your brain in producing feel-good endorphins. Regular exercise will help you function better during the day and rest better at night. How excellent is that? So the next time you hit the gym to tighten and tone that body, remember the good you’re doing for your mind and spirit as well! For more tips on mental fitness and how working out can improve your mood and alleviate stress, continue to read this excellent publication each week! Don’t forget to contact TrainerTomB@ aol.com with any questions you may have about your workouts! Here’s to an excellent Springtime in South Florida! H

GUILTY PLEASURES: David Daso and Robert Wilfong “House Hunters” by Day, Evenings, and Weekends

R

By Dale Madison

ealtor David Daso has been a staple in South Florida’s real estate market for nearly a decade. Like so many other members of his profession, he has seen the market rise to the top, and watch it tank. But according to Daso and his partner, Robert Wilfong—who ply their trade at Atlantic Properties International Business Café on Wilton Drive—they are seeing new life breathed into the market in general and this community in particular. “The condo sales are roaring back,” explains Daso, with relish. “Right now, we have 15 buyers just looking for condos and, frankly, the single family dwellings are also on the comeback trail.” On May 14, Daso, Wilfong, & Team will strut their professional stuff when they debut on the Home & Garden Television (HGTV) series “House Hunters.” “The great thing about this series is it was all filmed in Wilton Manors,” says Daso. “It deals very much with the LGBT

community.” Wilfong promises that locals will recognize many of the locations which were chosen by the show for filming. “This session of the series was taped at the main bar at Georgie’s Alibi and the final scenes were filmed at Naked Grape,” Wilfong notes. The pair works with Atlantic Properties’ broker and CEO Carl Marzola—himself a local fixture for over two decades—to promote the lifestyle and comforts of Greater Fort Lauderdale’s “gayborhood.” Daso and Wilfong are also building a charitable network, contributing 25 percent of their listing commissions to local service organizations of their client’s choosing. In March, they awarded their first check to Broward House. Their broker, Marzola, likewise kicked in a quarter of his broker’s commission. The process was repeated last week, with an endowment of $1,160 to the Poverello Center Thrift Store and Food Bank. The two place a lot of faith in the real

estate market’s comeback, and they say the numbers support their optimism. “We recently had a listing in East Oakland Park, and the asking price was $589,000,” Daso explains. “We got a cash offer of $575,000. But it was a great property and we were able to get a nice price. That’s always nice when you get that for your client,” he adds. Wilfong and Daso used the time they spent on “House Hunters” to educate a

national market as to the reality of real estate prices in Wilton Manors and the

surrounding “gay-gentrified” areas. “We pointed out in the show that ‘gone are the days’ of getting a condo for $75,000. The same condo in Drake Tower, for example, a year ago is now selling for $109,000,” Daso demonstrated. “So we are definitely seeing a turnaround.” The two are excited about their growth in Wilton Manors, both personally and professionally. They are looking forward to sharing their business philosophy and style with their premiere next Monday on “House Hunters,” which will replay several times during the month. “The crew plans to return in about three months for an update,” says Daso, with the nervous excitement of a high school junior waiting for his prom date, then adds—all business, “It is truly great exposure for the community and for South Florida real estate in general.” “House Hunters” airs on HGTV on Monday, May 14, at 10:00pm. The program will be aired at Georgie’s Alibi in the Manchester Room.H
