State vs Country: North Carolina, US Sue Each Other Over Transgender Bathroom Law
California May Ban State-Paid Trips to Protest Anti-Gay Laws
SACRAMENTO, CA (AP) - California lawmakers are advancing a ban on publicly funded travel to states that have laws restricting the rights of gay or transgender individuals. The state Assembly approved AB1887 Monday, the same day that the U.S. Justice Department and North Carolina’s governor sued each other over that state’s bathroom law. The North Carolina law requires that transgender people use restrooms matching the sex on their birth certificate.
Chief Justice’s Suspension Adds To Alabama’s Political Mess
BIRMINGHAM, AL (AP) - Alabama politics are at a low point even by Alabama standards: Three top elected officials are embroiled in scandal or facing removal from office. Chief Justice Roy Moore was suspended from office Friday and faces possible ouster over his attempts to block gay marriage following the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on same-sex unions. The Christian conservative was previously removed from the same position in 2003. Meanwhile, legislators are deciding what to do with an impeachment resolution against Gov. Robert Bentley amid a sexually charged scandal. And GOP House Speaker Mike Hubbard awaits a trial on 23 felony ethics charges that could result in his removal.

Colton Haynes Comes Out To Play
WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA--While the rumours have been circulating since the beginning of the year, Colton Haynes finally put to rest all rumours when he confirmed in an interview to Entertainment Weekly that he was indeed gay on Thursday. “I should have made a comment or a statement, but I just wasn’t ready. I didn’t feel like I owed anyone anything,” the 27-year-old said about the rumors, adding, “But I felt like I was letting people down by not coming forward with the rest of what I should have said.” Colton said hiding his identity added to his struggle with anxiety. nn
Trump as Nominee Improves Odds For Parts Of Obama’s Legacy
WASHINGTON (AP) - There’s no cheering at the White House for Donald Trump’s success. Yet for President Barack Obama, things could be worse. Trump’s ascent as the presumptive Republican nominee makes some of Obama’s main achievements more likely to survive after the next president takes over. Trump’s policy prescriptions, while full of contradictions and short on specifics, are generally closer to Obama’s than those of Trump’s closest GOP rival, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. nn
IN MEMORIAM Juliette Love dies from cancer
Activist and advocate Juliette Love, a board member of the Pride Center at Equality Park since 2013, died after a battle with cancer on Wednesday. Love had been a member of Florida’s HIV/AIDS prevention planning process since 1994, initially working with the Miami-Dade Couty planning group. From 1997 to her death, she worked with the Broward Community Planning Group. Love graduated from Florida A&M University in 1970, and received her Masters in Public Administration from Florida Atlantic University in 2009. Services are pending. nn
RALEIGH, NC (AP) - A potentially epic clash over transgender rights took shape Monday when North Carolina and the federal government sued each other over the state’s new bathroom law. “This is not a North Carolina issue. It is now a national issue,” North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory, a Republican who is up for reelection in November, declared at a news conference. Billions of dollars in state aid for North Carolina--and a potentially landmark decision regarding the reach of the nation’s civil rights laws--are at stake in the dispute. nn
NC College System’s Federal Funds In Crosshairs Of LGBT Law
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina’s prized public universities could be the biggest losers as state leaders defend a new law limiting the rights of LGBT people. The 17-university system, which includes the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University as well several historically black colleges, risks losing more than $1.4 billion in federal funds if the Republicans who run the Legislature don’t reverse the law by the end of business on Monday. The U.S. Justice Department set that deadline in letters this week to University of North Carolina leaders. nn
NY Gov. Cuomo Backs Challenge To NC Law Limiting LGBT Rights ALBANY, NY (AP) - New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is supporting a legal challenge to North Carolina’s new law limiting the rights of LGBT people. Cuomo says the state will file an amicus brief in support of the lawsuit filed by Lamba Legal, the ACLU and Equality North Carolina seeking to overturn the law. The North Carolina law restricts transgender people to public restrooms aligned with their biological sex and prevents governments from passing their own anti-discrimination rules. nn May 12, 2016

THE CANDY STORE DELIVERY. Dear America, This is why everyone hates us. Because we’re too fat and lazy to go to the store to buy f*cking candy! BACK TO DIVA SCHOOL. Well if you can learn a lesson about being a diva too soon before you’ve truly established yourself, take this little lesson from Katherine Heigl. Who was apparently a real b*tch to work with, made ridiculous demands, and then talked shit about the movies that made her successful. Now she’s selling cat food, and the cat has more airtime. KHLOÉ KARDASHIAN CONTROVERSY IN CUBA. Please! Haven’t these people suffered enough? Now they have to deal with these fat idiots walking around their island taking duck lip selfies! The younger, (not the model) looks like she’s had more bad plastic surgery than Joan Van Ark! TROUBLE-DIFFERENTIATING FACEBOOK FROM GRINDR. Well thank God for some sort of consistency in this world. We could be undergoing a nuclear holocaust, and in between photos of death and destruction there will still be 15 people in my newsfeed in various angles of “come hither” undress every single day. MOTHER’S DAY CONFUSION. I love seeing pictures of everybody’s mothers. Sometimes she’s a spitting image of her son/daughter; sometimes there are no physical similarities at all, and the first unfiltered thing that pops out of my mouth is “Milkman.” MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE! I am Ann Coulter’s birth child. I know. It’s so obvious! So much in common! We both look skeletal and can recycle a miniskirt from 1991 like nobody else and we are pretty much hated by everyone in society. A THOUGHT ABOUT THE AIR SHOW. So today is pretty much a lose lose for Fort Lauderdale. It sounds like f*cking Kabul overhead on land, while the beach crowd will have a copious amount of bad spandex, mullets, rattails, and that certain scent of cleavage sweat with stale beer. CALL IT LIKE I HEAR IT. I’m not sure who Colton Haynes is but I guess congratulations on coming out, although the odds were stacked against you from birth because you have the gayest porn star name ever. MYSTERY SLOVED! CALL 911. I’m gay plus my mother is an OCD neat freak, but I f*cking hate everything about cleaning and housework in any form. No interest. I’m seriously like Ally Sheedy in Maid to Order. Franklin Graham on Friday posted on Facebook, “A monument to sin? That’s unbelievable. War heroes deserve a monument, our nation’s founding fathers deserve a monument, and people who have helped to make America strong deserve a monument — but a monument to sin? The Washington Post reports that President Obama is poised to declare the first-ever national monument in New York recognizing ‘the struggle for gay rights’ to the Stonewall Inn. It’s no surprise that the three officials who represent the area and support the monument are all openly gay. I can’t believe how far our country has digressed. I hope that the president will reconsider. Flaunting sin is a dangerous move. God’s Word tells us, ‘Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people’ (Proverbs 14:34).”

COVER STORY
Transgender Performer
to Tour North Carolina’s Men’s Rooms
BY RICHARD HACK
n
Transgender performer Shakina Nayfack is out and proud and about to start what could be labeled a rebel tour of men’s restrooms in North Carolina. Tattooed and standing 6’2”, Shakina is protesting the state’s new law forcing transgenders to use the bathroom of their birth sex. “They are trying to create a situation where trans people are supposed to be invisible. This is an absurd, panicked reaction from the ignorant, it’s a massive step backwards, so I felt it was my duty to go down there and take selfies in as many men’s bathrooms as possible,” she said. Shakina was born Jared Alan Nayfack, and as a boy put on his first dress at the age of six at a Super Bowl party. While the early act of rebellion was quickly quashed by her mother, it was the beginning of a life that has been in constant transition. As a teenager, she was an outgay male, but later realized that she was actually transgender, taking the name Shakina in 2001. She moved to New York in 2010, and eighteen months ago she traveled to Thailand for gender reassignment surgery and covered the cost through the crowdfunding site YouCaring.com. 12
May 12, 2016
“It started as a joke, I tweeted about how expensive the surgery was and said I should crowdfund my sex change, ha ha ha, and it happened! Then when I heard about HB2 I posted that I wanted to go down there and pee in all the ‘wrong’ restrooms and someone posted ‘I would totally crowdfund that,’ so the next day I launched the new campaign,” Nayfack said. The tour officially starts on June 8 in New York where Nayfack will debut her onewoman rock musical Manifest Pussy at Joe’s Pub at the Public (425 Lafayette St, New York, NY 10003) before heading to North Carolina the following day. The show tells the tale of her gender journey. “Depending on what the legislature does, it will either be a demonstration or a celebration tour,” said Nayfack. “HB2 is ridiculous, it means trans people either have to go in places where we risk being subject to violence, or at least making people uncomfortable, or we are forced to find secret places to pee.” Nayfack will be performing in men’s restrooms in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Greensboro, Asheville, Flat Rock,
Charlotte and Fayetteville, and taking pictures to be posted daily on Facebook and Twitter. The North Carolina law, known as HB2, effectively outlaws people from using the public bathroom that reflects their gender identity if it does not match the sex stated on their birth certificate. It also blocks local authorities in the state from instituting wider anti-discrimination laws, sparked by a former Charlotte law designed to protect people from bias based on their sexuality or gender identity. The US Department of Justice has told North Carolina the new regime violates federal civil rights law and has given the state until Monday to abandon the legislation. Nayfack sees herself as a “grassroots trans activist” and, “God willing, a rising star in the entertainment industry.” According to Nayfack, she has had offers from transgender residents in North Carolina, and
others annoyed by HB2, to accommodate, feed and print flyers for Nayfack and her fourpiece rock band.
“
I’m not looking to confront anyone,” she says. “If people want to engage me in civil discussion in a bathroom that will be fine. But if people want to come at me, I’ll tell them, well, they could suck my dick, but I cut it off,” she said.

OPINION FROM THE PUBLISHER
WELCOME TO

PRIDE SEASON
And so it begins, the season of Pride in South Florida, New York, and Los Angeles. It’s time to rainbow up our PowerPoint presentations and convince the business community to invite LGBT consumers to the party! I had a super time at Miami Beach Pride last month. Hats off to event organizers, volunteers, sponsors and celebs who turned South Beach into a perfect festival of gay life. Nothing like dancing with sand in your toes. And Miami knows how to throw a parade--finally some floats! Also from Miami: The reviews are in for MiFo and they are two thumbs up. The Miami leg of the Miami Fort Lauderdale festival reminded us that we have a long way to go to get our local stories on the screen. A great testament to this passion is this week’s trending #giveelsaagirlfriend, a plea to Disney for Frozen2. By The paparazzi is ready Maura to welcome new talent in screenwriting, direction Lane and producing. Without MiFo, many of those would not have the platform to share with appreciative audiences. This will be my first Pride Season as Publisher of the Agenda. I am at the halfway point in this year and I have been humbled. Sure, it’s easy to say we have a talented and passionate staff. Let me tell you, this team is downright dangerous. They are so connected to their craft that they will not rest easy on the brand. The amount of effort that goes into weekly content meetings is matched with the attention to client goals and delivery. They know that every business that choses to advertise with us is dependent on us to bring them LGBT consumers. Our entire team is focused on results, 14

delivering exceptional client experience and holds true the responsibility of representing the LGBT community. All of this while pushing back the competitive noise and adding new prospects daily. What is the purpose of Pride Season? It is a time to applaud the achievements of others. We’ll start this Friday at Diversity Honors. Diversity Honors is the gayest gala in South Florida. Nice mix of men and women and everyone is gussied up! Buy a ticket, and let’s meet there. For $175, you’ll have a splendid time in a gorgeous ballroom at The Seminole Hard Rock. You’ll learn about the stellar work of this year’s honorees and enjoy a performance by Tony Award-winning Actor/ Singer Levi Kreis. Clink glasses with people who care about our community, gays from West Palm to the Keys will attend making this authentically South Florida. Last minute addition, the gorgeous Bollywood star and global human rights activist Celina Jaitly will receive the Harvey Milk Foundation’s Lilla Watson Global Champion Medal. Diversity Honors benefits The Harvey Milk Foundation and The Pride Center at Equality Park. Pride Season is a time to showcase our power as a community. With lively conversation about the rights to deny us service, it’s time we showed what happens when you put out the rainbow flag. I was fortunate in my past career to work beside the powerhouses in Black media. The gateway to marketing to black consumers was February, Black History Month. Now June is upon us, the official Pride Month. Last June was historical as everyone who was anyone changed their Facebook profile to support marriage equality and brands including Oreos to Doritos wrapping their products in rainbows. The excitement continues this June as we help marketers who understand the value of embracing us. The Wilton Manors Entertainment Group has developed a comprehensive program for Stonewall Pride this year. Graduating from a local community event,
Stonewall now utilizes an event management company and promises to deliver over 30,000 in attendance. Regional advertisers will extend their message with engagement and digital programs surrounding Stonewall and throughout the month of June. Westfield Broward Mall has extended the invitation for us to come West and SHOP WITH PRIDE from June 2 -12. Macy’s at Westfield Broward is also supporting this first of-its-kind shopping program, complete with a calendar of fun events and the sale of commemorative totes filled with goodies to benefit The Pride Center at Equality Park. Pride Season is about our history, our buying power, our ability to say “thank you, I came in because I saw the (ad, flag, booth, rainbow).” We’ve got less than a month to make an impact. I know we can support each other, show our strength in numbers, offer positive feedback and welcome challenges. A toast to those presenting these opportunities, designing the campaigns, volunteering for committees, dancing on floats. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but it is well worth it! Besides, in July, we’ll be ready to pitch 2017! nn

CHEST HAIR: New Look or Old School?
n
You know it’s a slow news day when a newspaper no less venerable than the New York Times would take to devoting 18 column inches to the subject of shaving chest hair. Not since Tom Selleck in his board shorts loped along the beaches of Hawaii, chest hair matted in salt-water driplets, has the subject of manscaping become so mainstream. By For the Richard record, the NYT deHack cided that the “new generation,” whoever that might be, has decided that “the overly groomed body appears to have fallen out of favor.” Writing for the Times, Max Berlinger cites examples like the 34-yearold Los Angeles-based public relations executive, Eric Shoemaker, who said, “I don’t know if it was my age or becoming comfortable with myself, but the thought of getting waxed — which makes your hair follicles bleed and you get ingrown hairs — you have to ask who you’re doing it for.” Waxed? Bloody hair follicles? Clearly Shoemaker needs a new grooming specialist. According to Berlinger, Gabriel Santos-Rocha, a 31-year18
May 12, 2016
old model manager, stopped depilating roughly eight years ago, in his early 20s. “I thought that the ideal body had no hair,” he said. But Santos-Rocha wasn’t up to the upkeep necessary. “I hated dealing with the maintenance and the stubble and the itching that came with it,” he said. A quick look around the hood certainly confirms that facial hair is on the rise, with everything from rough scruffs to full-grown Rutherford B. Hayes currently in fashion. But extend that below the neckline? According to the folks at Men’s Health, it’s just not such a cut and dry story. In a recent poll, 68 percent of men admitted to some form of chest grooming, with the majority opting to keep chest hair at under 1/8 inch. Another 12 percent went for the totally smooth look, while the remaining 20 perfect, only a fifth of those surveyed, didn’t give their chest hair a second thought, leaving it to Mother Nature to naturally prune. All of this must come as news to the New York Times who swears by the accuracy of its sources. Not so, according to the American Electrology Association that certifies technicians using laser hair removal equipment. According to the AEA, in the state of Florida, men account for 18 percent of all laser hair removal, up from just four percent ten years ago. And it’s not just the chest that’s
getting hair removal treatments. Men’s backs, legs, buttocks and armpits are also going under the laser beam, albeit with less consistency. In a survey conducted by Men’s Health magazine, in which shaving leg hair was the subject, 51.6 % gave the expected response: “That’s weird. I would never touch my leg hair.” More remarkable is the 33.15 who admitted trimming their leg hair regularly. “I don’t shave clean, but I do use a trimmer to cut it down.” For some, that means “mow.” And then there are the dark horses, the always avant-garde fashionistas who answered: “It’s not weird. I shave my legs frequently.” All 15.3% of them. Male image consultant Aaron Marino of Atlanta, told Men’s Health that for him, “it’s purely aesthetic. When I started working out, I shaved my arms so
“
you could see more definition. In the fitness world, it’s not as taboo for men to remove body hair. So I kept doing it, and then started shaving my legs, too. I prefer the look, and I feel like it’s cleaner. Hair isn’t one of those things I need,” he said. Armpit hair is another story completely. It was a surprising 68% of men who said that they trimmed their armpit hair. Of those, 52% said they did it for aesthetics, while the remaining 16% said they did it for athletic reasons. Only 11.1% of men said they left their armpit hair untouched. Quick, somebody alert the New York Times.

The new generation,” whoever that might be, has decided that “the overly groomed body appears to have fallen out of favor.”
OPINION DR. DURRELL’S SPIRITUAL PRESCRIPTIONS
[
PENTECOSTAL MUSINGS
n
In Western Christianity, we are approaching the celebration of Pentecost (May 15th this year). Pentecost in Christianity is the 50th day after Easter Sunday, though it was borrowed and “Christianized” from an older Jewish tradition. In the Christian observance of Pentecost, the church is imagined to have been energized by the power of God’s spirit. On the day of Pentecost, the tradition tells us, a powerful By Rev. energy filled a room where a diverse group of Durrell people gathered. In their Watkins diversity, they experi-
enced unity and they were empowered to be a force for good in the world. I suppose that ancient narrative is on my mind just now, not only because Pentecost is at hand, but also because a force for good in the world is still needed. I don’t mean to suggest that only one religion can be a force for good, nor do I mean to imply that secular efforts to make a positive difference can’t succeed. The poetry of religion lifts up sacred moments and liminal experiences, but the truth is, whatever our religious inclinations (if indeed we have any), we still need to find unity in our diversity. There is still a need to celebrate our various points of uniqueness while coming together to work for “liberty and justice for all.” After all, the Seal of the United States does say, “E Pluribus Unum” (“Out of many, One”); that seems like a worthy goal as much now as ever. In a world where fear of difference continues to plague us, where fear of the “Other” still divides us, where entire groups of people are
A PUBLICLY-TRADED LGBTQ COMPANY STOCK SYMBOL: MMPW
continuously dehumanized in order to protect the privilege of some and to marginalize others, a healing wind blowing through human consciousness, through societies and cultures, through communities and neighborhoods could still be put to good use. In a world where bakers and therapists can deny service to same-gender loving people in the name of religion, where humiliating bathroom bills are callously passed, and where the flames of hysteria are fanned to persuade the masses that some nefarious “Other” is out to get us, a unifying spirit to inspire us all to be a force for justice and goodwill in the world could be very useful indeed. My wish and prayer as Pentecost approaches is that a divine Breath (or even a profoundly human impulse) will infuse us all, so that regardless of our fondness for religious vocabularies, we may simply strive to be our best, to do our best, and to work together to create the best possible future for us all, and for those who will follow us. nn Durrell Watkins is the senior minister of Sunshine Cathedral in Fort Lauderdale.

THE DEEPER DIVE
BY PATRICK BERKLEY
B
eing the first openly gay man to be appointed to the state court bench in Florida, Broward County’s Judge Robert Lee of the 17th Judicial Court is both a trailblazer and an activist. He began his distinguished career as an attorney before researching the winning brief in a case for Broward United Against Discrimination. This gave him the drive and the direction toward becoming a justice.
Judge Robert Lee Lee was named one of Florida Agenda’s Top 100 Movers and Shakers of 2015. We recently had an opportunity to talk to him about his storied career and his opinions about the current political climate.
BERKLEY: Describe the work you did with Broward United Against Discrimination. LEE: Back in the early 1990s Florida was fighting the American Family Association’s own legal attack on LGBT citizens’ rights, similar to the issues we are now seeing in North Carolina and Mississippi. I volunteered for around three years on the legal side, and we won the battle. It’s one of the reasons I feel that our state will never have to deal with the type of discrimination happening in North Carolina—we already fought that battle and won. When I was working with Broward United Against Discrimination it was suggested to me that I should become a judge, which would be a path that would change my life.
on Washington in 1993. How did that shape your perspective? LEE: It was the biggest wake-up call in my life. It was the first time I was somewhere and the majority of the people were gay. There were a million people, serious about their rights, grouped together based upon the areas they were from. You were able to see the vastness and diversity of our community. It was incredible and influential.
BERKLEY: Do you think being gay separates you from other judges? LEE: It does change things in many different ways. Judges come and ask for help in dealing with both personal and professional issues. I have been asked to put together LGBT education material for judges. I feel like you have an extra task of educating your colleagues.
BERKLEY: What were the hardest cases to preside over? LEE: There were two cases in which the people did NOT want a gay judge. They wrote a formal complaint. My Chief Judge asked me why I didn’t step down, and I told him I felt like I had an obligation to be on the case. It was hard because I knew they were disgusted the whole time, but I stuck with it. It’s only happened two times in nineteen years, so that‘s pretty encouraging.
BERKLEY: You participated in the historic Gay and Lesbian March 20
May 12, 2016
BERKLEY: What are the most important legal issues facing LGBT citizens today? LEE: It seems in South Florida that we have a lot of rights now, but it might not be so true in rural areas. I think that the transgender issue is going to be a big deal. There is a lot of fear about that issue.

CAPITOL BEAT COULD A GAY MAN MAKE IT ONTO A BANKNOTE?
n
While Andrew Jackson is being bounced with much fanfare from the front to the back of the new $20 bill — to be replaced by Harriet Tubman — there is a piece of quieter historical rehabilitation at work over in the U.K. Alan Turing, who died in ignominy and by his own hand, is finally getting his due. He did not make it onto the currency — despite a campaign between 20102015 to feature Turing on the new ten pound note. But he has been, if not fully, then at least partly rehabilitated. Turing is likely best known to current audiences from the 2014 awardwinning feature film, The Imitation BY Game. The LINDA film brought PENTZ home just how significant a contribution Turing made to the ultimate Allied victory in World War II, breaking Germany’s Enigma code and, at the same time, basically inventing the computer. Many also learned that Turing was a gay man. But Turing’s incredible contribution had already been trumpeted back in 1980 by Larry Kramer in his groundbreaking play about AIDS, The Normal Heart. Ned Weeks, the play’s considerably autobiographical character, enthuses about Turing in a memorable
22
May 12, 2016
monologue while berating his closeted nemesis, Bruce Niles: “Mr. Green Beret, did you know that it was an openly gay Englishman who’s responsible for winning World War II? His name’s Alan Turing and he cracked the Germans’ Enigma code. After the war was over, he committed suicide because he was so hounded for being gay. Why didn’t they teach any of that in schools? A gay man is responsible for winning World War II! If they did, maybe he wouldn’t have killed himself and you wouldn’t be so terrified of who you are.” The subsequent guilt and culpability associated with Turing’s arrest and trial for “gross indecency” and his later suicide has led to a gradual restitution of Turing’s status and reputation, albeit many decades too late. Turing chose what was then known as chemical castration, rather than do jail time for his alleged “crimes.” As the film so powerfully portrayed, the physical and psychological pain of those treatments may well have contributed to his suicide on 8 June 1954 by cyanide poisoning. After The Normal Heart came Hugh Whitemore’s 1986 play about Turing himself, Breaking the Code, which was also filmed for television 10 years later, both times with now out actor Derek Jacobi as Turing. There has also been a slew of books about him. Then in 2009, there was a hint of progress when then Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, issued a public apology for Turing’s
treatment. “The debt of gratitude he is owed makes it all the more horrifying, therefore, that he was treated so inhumanely,” Brown said. Despite this, parliament notoriously voted to refuse Turing a pardon in 2012, provoking a public outcry and a 10,000-signature petition. Among Turing’s advocates was renowned scientist, Stephen Hawking. This led, ultimately, to a 2013 formal pardon from the Queen. But there was more to come. Turing had to keep quiet about his continued involvement with GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters), Britain’s security and intelligence agency. But its current head, John Hannigan, recently apologized not only for Turing’s treatment but for the agency’s longstanding ban — now lifted — against homosexuals working there. “Who knows what Turing would have gone on to do,” Hannigan speculated. Today, Elizabeth Fry (£5), Charles Darwin (£10), Adam Smith (£20) and Matthew Boulton and James Watt (£50) adorn the reverse side of British banknotes — the reigning monarch is in permanent occupation on the front. Could a gay man one day supplant one of these luminaries? Only time will tell. nn Linda Pentz is the Washington correspondent of the Florida Agenda. She can be contacted at lindapentz@mmplgbt.com. I’M JUST SAYIN’ There have been 44 Presidents to date – and according to official doctrine, all of them have supposedly been heterosexual. But given that at least 43 of them were serving at a time when homosexuals were still oppressed, there has long been speculation of a few gay trysts flying under the radar. Considering how much people love to speculate on who might and might not be gay, I was surprised to find a small list of potential closeted homosexuality of the U.S. presidents. Here is one that stands out the most as a gay president.
JAMES BUCHANAN Buchanan was the only president who was never married. He lived with a man -- Senator William Rufus King from Alabama -- for years. Andrew Jackson allegedly referred to them as “Miss Nancy” and “Aunt Fancy”. When King left for a trip to France, Buchanan told a friend: “I am now solitary and alone. I have gone a-wooing to several gentlemen, but have not succeeded with any one of them.” He was also recognized as being uptight and gossipy -- kind of like Mitchell on “Modern Family.” Now that’s basically the entirety of the evidence. Is it semiconvincing? Sure. Is it enough to get him cast on the face of a banknote? Probably not, but let the debates begin on who was the first gay president.

CREEP OF THE WEEK
Ted Cruz’s Face BY D’ANNE WITOWSKI
n
Ted Cruz is creepy. That’s not only a widely held opinion, it’s scientific fact. George Washington University neurology professor Dr. Richard E. Cytowic wrote in Psychology Today, “It’s hard to look at Ted Cruz’s face.” It’s kind of like that old joke: “Hey, does your face hurt, because it’s killing me!” Except Cytowic isn’t kidding. Cytowic takes years of experience reading faces and comes to the conclusion that Cruz’s face pretty much compels people to look away. Of course, what a politician looks like isn’t really what matters (unless that politician is a woman, amirite?). What matters more is the company they keep and what they stand for. And if you’re LGBT or LGBT adjacent, you probably already know that Cruz’s face is the least of your worries. Cruz is totally obsessed with transgender people right now. It won’t be long before be holds a press conference inside of a Target ladies’ room kicking open every stall door looking for The Rocky Horror Picture Show-era Tim Curry. He’s even sparring with Caitlyn Jenner, who posted a video on her Facebook page where she uses the women’s restroom at a Trump hotel. At 24

the end of the video she looks into the camera and says, “By the way, Ted, nobody got molested.” Though I have to take issue with her use of “take a pee” three times in such a short clip -- POINT MADE. The Cruz campaign has been blasting Donald Trump for dismissing this whole transgender bathroom panic. In a campaign commercial, eerie music plays over a black and white image of some stall doors with the words, “Should a grown man pretending to be a woman be allowed to use the women’s rest room?” The answer is, of course, “No.” Because that’s not even the issue here. Unless, of course, you believe -- like Cruz -- that transgender people don’t exist. They’re just loonies playing dress up and trying to take up skirt photos of your daughters and wife. Then the video shows an image of Trump, also black and white, saying that he won’t take on “the PC police.” The ad leaves the viewer with Trump’s face next to the words, “He’s one of them.” Now, is Cruz merely calling Trump a member of the “PC police,” or is he also kinda sorta insinuating that Trump is a cross-dressing predator? “This is not a matter of
right or left, or Democrat or Republican. This is common sense,” Cruz told CNN. “And frankly, the concern is not of the Caitlyn Jenners of the world, but if the law is such that any man, if he feels like it, can go in a woman’s restroom and you can’t ask him to leave, that opens the door for predators.” Ah, yes. The concern is not of the Caitlyn Jenners of the world. What does that mean, exactly? Is Cruz saying that trans men and women can pee all they want so long as they “pass” in public? Because Caitlyn Jenner follows traditional feminine conventions -- not to mention the fact that she has the money for plastic surgery, hormone replacement therapy and whatever else she needs -- she can pee where she wants? Everybody else? Pee at home. And only at home. No, seriously. That’s Cruz’s position on this issue. Problem solved. Everybody go home. Literally. But don’t worry, Cruz hates LGBT people, too. His list of endorsements reads like a Creep of the Week Family Reunion. He’s a man who isn’t afraid of the hate in his heart. Not to mention the fact that he has a scientifically ugly mug. nn

OPINION
DELEGATE STANDINGS
Donald Trump As Republican leaders grapple with whether or not to support Donald Trump as their presidential candidate, unbound delegates across the country are rallying behind his candidacy, pushing him closer to formally clinching the party’s nomination. Trump has picked up endorsements from more than 20 unbound delegates since he became the presumptive nominee last week, according to CNN’s latest count. The real estate mogul gained support from unbound delegates in North Dakota, Louisiana, Pennsylvania and American Samoa. Trump currently has 1,107 total delegates and is on track to clinch the nomination after the last round of primaries June 7. Most delegates to the Republican National Convention are required to support a particular candidate, based on primary or caucus results from their home state. But about 150 delegates are “unbound,” which means they are free to support anyone, and can switch their support at any time.

Trump As Nominee
Improves Odds For Parts Of Obama’s Legacy
WASHINGTON (AP) There’s no cheering at the White House for Donald Trump’s success. Ted Cruz. Where Cruz opposed Obama’s outreach to Cuba, Trump said it’s “fine,” though he would have handled it differently. Trump even has embraced a few essential elements of Obama’s health law, long the bane of the Republican Party. On gay and transgender rights, the New York businessman has taken a softer tone than Cruz and most of the other Republicans who sought the nomination, too. To be sure, a Trump presidency would be bad news for most of Obama’s legacy. After all, Trump has said Obama may go down as the worst president in history. Trump has said that if he’s elected, he’ll terminate Obama’s immigration actions and build a wall on the border with Mexico. He rails against Obama’s trade deals and laughs off concerns about climate change, while saying he would repeal the Dodd-Frank financial reforms. For Hillary Clinton, that’s Argument A why voters seeking to uphold Obama’s legacy should side with her. “From starting his political campaign on the back of a birther conspiracy about the president to promising to overturn the many accomplishments of the Obama
administration, Donald Trump is too much of a risk for anyone who cares about President Obama’s legacy,” said Jesse Ferguson, a Clinton campaign spokesman. With Trump as the Republican nominee, Obama’s aides are more confident that Obama will be succeeded by a Democrat, a view bolstered by the deep fractures that Trump’s ascent is carving in the GOP. The big question at the White House is whether Trump can successfully recast himself in the general election without triggering backlash from voters seeking ideological purity. A look at issues where Trump has suggested he’d stick with elements of Obama’s approach:
CUBA Obama has spent more than a year working to make his historic rapprochement with Cuba irreversible. With Trump as the nominee, it appears closer ties are here to stay. Unlike Cruz, the son of a Cuban immigrant, and the other Republican candidates who vociferously opposed Obama’s policy, Trump has said that a half-century of estrangement was plenty. “I think it’s fine,” Trump said of Obama’s outstretched hand. “But we should have made a better deal.”
HEALTH CARE Like his former GOP challengers, Trump opposes Obama’s health law and has pledged “a full repeal.” But when it comes to what should replace it, Trump has described something closer to Obama’s approach than what other Republicans prefer. Trump wants to keep the coverage guarantees for existing conditions. That’s a position that Cruz and other Republicans haven’t fully embraced. While Trump has said his plan would largely rely on private insurance companies, he’s been open in the past to government-run health care - a step farther than what Obama was able to accomplish and the preferred system of Democrat Bernie Sanders, Clinton’s rival for the Democratic nomination. “As far as single payer, it works in Canada,” Trump said in a GOP debate in August. “It could have worked in a different age.”
IRAN Trump is no fan of Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran. But he’s one of the only GOP contenders this year to suggest he would not rescind it - at least temporarily. Cruz pledged to rip the deal “to shreds” on his first day in office. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said he couldn’t stand behind it. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio promised to re-
impose sanctions. Not Trump. “We have a horrible contract, but we do have a contract,” Trump has said. Acknowledging it would be popular to say he’d rip up the deal, Trump says instead he’d seek to renegotiate it and “police” Iran for violations. “You know, I’ve taken over plenty of bad contracts where I’ve bought things where deals have gone bad because the people doing it didn’t know what they were doing,” Trump has said.
GAY RIGHTS Trump conspicuously broke with his party by opposing a North Carolina law requiring transgender people to use bathrooms conforming with their birth certificates. While Cruz warned of grown men ogling little girls, Trump advised North Carolina it should have left well enough alone. “There have been very few complaints the way it is,” Trump told NBC’s “Today Show” last month. “People go, they use the bathroom that they feel is appropriate. There has been so little trouble.” Obama, too, opposes the law. But unlike Trump, Obama has been a vocal advocate for gay marriage. Trump has generally avoided the issue on the campaign trail. He’s said he’s attended a gay wedding, but disagreed with the Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriage nationwide. “If I’m elected I would be very strong in putting certain judges on the bench that I think maybe could change things,” Trump has said.

POMPANO BEACH IS POPPIN! Five Reasons to Love Pompano Beach BY MAURA MUMBALL LANE When I started researching Pompano for our Home Issue last month, I became curious about what was coming to this boaters’ paradise filled with strip shopping centers and 1970s apartment complexes. Could this town named after a fish be the place for the gays to add some fairy dust? Yes, Pompano is on the rise and they are ready for us to dive in. Pompano Beach is located in Broward County just north of Fort Lauderdale and South of Lighthouse Point. The town stretches West to the Florida Turnpike and East to the ocean. Known for fun on the water from coral reef diving to angler tournaments, Pompano Beach has also dropped some lures for the LGBT community.

SECRET RECIPE SERIES By Maura Mumball Lane
DECORATED SUGAR COOKIES Speedo and Mad Men inspired cookies

I learned to bake and decorate cookies from Twitter. I found a community of bakers, corporate deserters and lovers of sugar flour and butter. They gave me encouragement guidance and compassionate critique. The recipe is simple but like all baking, exact measurement and timing result in quality eats. Think of sugar cookies as a blank canvas. Don’t worry about cutters. You can free-form cut using paper guides. Icing colors, piping bags and most cookie making tools can be found at Michaels Craft Stores. For more inspiration follow @THEToughcookie on Twitter.
INGREDIENTS: 4 cups flour 1 t baking powder ½ t salt 2 sticks unsalted butter 2 large eggs 2 cups sugar In a large bowl, whisk flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside. In a separate large bowl, beat butter, sugar and eggs with a hand mixer for 3 minutes. Slowly add in whisked dry ingredients. Turn out dough on counter, and separate in half. Flatten the dough and wrap in plastic. Refrigerate two hours or overnight. Preheat oven to 325. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Roll out dough on floured surface to ¼ inch thick. Cut cookies to desired shape and transfer to baking sheets. Chill filled sheets in freezer for 15 minutes. Bake for 15-18 minutes, switching sheet positions halfway through baking. Cool on wire racks and decorate with royal icing. May 12, 2016

STEVEN, TAKE A BOW In news marked “It Was Only a Matter of Time,” get ready for Steven, the biopic about England’s most quotable rock star, Morrissey. Did that time come too soon, do you think? Is he not yet old enough or legendary enough for his own biopic? Well, that’s where you’d be wrong; the man’s 30-plus-year career began with his leading of the UK’s most influential ’80s band, The Smiths (probably even more popular today than in 1985) and has thrived over time with a refusal to retreat from the solo limelight ever since. Furthermore, his mark on queer culture is probably more indelible than even his openly gay musical peers (Morrissey has never fully sexually identified himself, because he’s Morrissey). Shooting now, the film is being directed by Mark Gill, a relative newcomer riding a wave of success after his short film Oscar and BAFTA nominations. British TV fixture Jodie Comer co-stars, as does Downton Abbey’s Jessica Brown Findlay, and in the title role, Scottish up-and-comer Jack Lowden (War & Peace) will play the man who sang “Meat is Murder.” It looks to be a 2017 release, so stretch out and wait.
BRET EASTON ELLIS GETS DELETED Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho) is an author, a screenwriter, a controversial Tweeter, a podcaster, and now, at long last, a director. He’s teaming up with Fullscreen, a successful streaming content producer, to launch the online series The Deleted. Based on an original screenplay--as opposed to other Ellis-based films that have been either based on his novels or were screenplays he wrote for other directors such as Paul Schrader (The Canyons)--The Deleted is a thriller concerning the disappearance of seemingly unrelated people in Los Angeles. These random “deletions” trigger a mysterious sort of group paranoia among a collection of twentysomething cult survivors. All of it feels very “Disappear Here,” which is a recurring line in Ellis’ debut novel, Less Than Zero, and from our perspective, that’s something to get excited about. Now, will Patrick Bateman be making a cameo, breezily passing through the background? Let’s hope. 32

QUENTIN LEE’S THE UNBIDDEN In a filmmaking universe that involves digital tech tests that would allow CGI employees to make Scarlett Johansson look vaguely Asian for Ghost in The Shell (yes, we’re still shaking our head over every bit of that, and will continue to do so, thanks), it’s nice to see a little good news come along. And that’s The Unbidden, directed by queer filmmaker Quentin Lee (White Frog, The People I’ve Slept With), which recently premiered at Los Angeles’ Asian Pacific Film Festival and has just been picked up for distribution by Viva Pictures. It’s being called the first all-female Asian American supernatural thriller, one that involves ghosts, demons, hauntings, and a dinner party, and it stars the following underrated character actresses: Tamlyn Tomita (The Joy Luck Club), Julia Nickson (Rambo), Amy Hill (Lilo & Stitch), Elizabeth Sung (The Joy Luck Club) and Michelle Krusiec (The Invitation). Set a Google alert or whatever it is you do to keep yourself reminded. When this sort of thing comes along, it deserves support. Otherwise, progress takes a back seat to complaints when it should be enjoying popcorn instead.
ANOTHER HIT FOR RYAN MURPHY AND GWYNETH PALTROW All this silly animosity for Gwyneth Paltrow--you’d think she was running for President on a platform of racism and ignorance. But no, that’s some guy people seem to love. Paltrow’s crimes are, apparently, worse: expensive smoothies and spa treatments, publishing cool cookbooks, and being an Academy Award-winning actor. So we would like to invite all of you to get over yourselves for long enough to remember her hilarious turn as the kooky substitute teacher on Ryan Murphy’s Glee. And now that you’ve done that, enjoy this news: she’s re-teaming with Murphy for another music-centric TV project, One Hit Wonders. Still in the early stages, Paltrow will get to twirl on her haters as a washed-up, forgotten, ’90s singer who had a single popular song. Broke and aimless, she finds herself re-teamed with other ’90s hasbeens to form a supergroup. Call it The Comeback with pop songs and an actress who can actually sing and pull it off. And honestly, the entire scenario sounds like a really good idea. Somebody call JJ Fad and make something happen.

Also, what tips do you have for a Nick drag king who wants to perfect their Nick Jonas drag act? JONAS: Well, it’s an honor, you know, first of all. I feel very honored! (Laughs) I think the tips would be, make sure the jeans are fairly tight – not too tight, but tight enough. And I do a lot of face touching, I’ve noticed, so maybe incorporate that into the act and it’ll all work. AZZOPARDI: When do you touch your face the most? JONAS: When I’m singing, when I’m talking. It’s kind of a strange thing I do. AZZOPARDI: I spoke to your brother Joe recently and he mentioned getting down at the gay clubs with you. What’s a night with you and Joe like at the gay club? Just like everybody else, there are some days when I don’t feel great in my skin. I do my best to grow. But I think when I came into my body, you know, and started building muscle and realizing that in a lot of ways physically I had become a man, that’s when I became comfortable and confident. Getting into fitness was helpful. AZZOPARDI: When did being accepting and loving to the LGBT community really become important to you? Was there a person or a moment that really drove you to become the advocate that you are? JONAS: It was my early Broadway days and being kind of immersed in the community at an early age and really seeing that there was no difference. The key was accepting and loving people from all different walks of life. It was just a priority at an early age and also because my parents were really open and loving and laid it out for us that there was no difference. I think that was a healthy environment to be in at an early age. AZZOPARDI: What do you make of speculation that you are gay? AZZOPARDI: You stepped in for Iggy Azalea last year and headlined Pittsburgh Pride when she canceled her headlining performance after LGBT groups pulled out in protest of her past homophobic tweets. What was it like playing your first Pride event? JONAS: It was a lot of fun! I think there was a real warmth because of the fact that I kind of jumped in last minute and covered, so I think people were really pumped about that. The show itself was great. It was a lot of LGBT community people and it was good. They were a great crowd. And I’ll tell you what, I think it was one of my favorite shows of last year. There’s something to be said about surprising people! AZZOPARDI: Last year seemed to be pretty darn good for you, but your new album, Last Year Was Complicated, begs to differ. What was the biggest hurdle you had to overcome last year? JONAS: It was a real year of growth, going from being in a group with my brothers for years to traveling alone, being alone all the time – it was intense at first. Then, on top of that, the breakup I had last year was, well, complicated (laughs), it was tricky. It required me to really dig in deep and lay out all my thoughts and feelings in my music, which, for me, is the best outlet possible. AZZOPARDI: Beyoncé is obviously experiencing this with her new surprise album Lemonade, but I wonder, for you, how do you feel when you release a body of work and the public dissects it and relates it back to your personal life? JONAS: I can’t comment for Beyoncé or speak for her, but as an artist I think it’s so important to lay your heart and feelings out in your music, and if you want to be an open book in that way, it’s a great outlet to be able to do it. For me, I’m just thrilled to have that outlet to pour my heart into because it’s a good way to process my feelings and emotions. AZZOPARDI: Do you keep the gay community in mind when you make music? JONAS: I think you have to create and have it be authentically you and kind of worry about what people are going to think afterwards, or who might be listening. That’s what I’ve tried to do: tell the stories the best way I can first, (so they) are the most honest. If I have to go back and edit afterwards, I will, but for the most part what I write in that room that day is what ends up on the record. AZZOPARDI: Outside of Scream Queen and Kingdom, do you see more gay roles in your future? JONAS: I think it’s about the material. If something comes up and has a great script and a great creative team, I would definitely do it. It’s all about the script though. That, for me, is the focus. AZZOPARDI: When I talked to Joe, he said he was working on music with you. He also alluded to the possibility of there being a Jonas Brothers reunion down the line, saying, “It could easily happen.” What’s the status on the new music? And how 38

do you feel about a Jonas reunion? JONAS: Well, he and I live together now. We just moved in together actually. So yeah, we have a music room in the house and we’re always writing, whether it’s for us, for (his band) DNCE, for my stuff, or just writing for other people. I’m definitely trying to always create. But I’m not sure about a Jonas Brothers reunion. I think that we’re all very happy doing our own thing. And our oldest brother, Kevin, is expecting another baby with his wife, so it’s exciting times for everybody. AZZOPARDI: When might we hear some of the music you’ve been making with Joe? JONAS: It’s gotta be right first, so if we get something done and it ends up on a project, that’d be great. But I’m not sure about anything coming out very soon – it’s gonna be a little while. AZZOPARDI: Following in the footsteps of some defiant tour cancellations in North Carolina to protest the state’s “bathroom bill,” you
Multi-platinum selling music artists, Demi Lovato & Nick Jonas, invite you to experience FUTURE NOW: THE TOUR. The North American tour, produced by Live Nation, will kick off at BB&T Center on Friday, June 24, 2016 as the two influential entertainers join forces for what will be one of the year’s most anticipated music events.
JONAS: It’s an incredibly tough situation overall and one that we thought really hard about. Speaking with Demi and the whole team, the thought was, we needed to do our best to take a strong stand, and although it’s difficult and it’s gonna be a disappointment to our fans who were looking forward to the shows, we feel that it’s the right thing to do. Sometimes you gotta go with your gut feeling and do your best to help a situation. Hopefully our fans understand and stand with us. We’re trying to do our humble part. A change would be good. t’s hard to imagine that a film set in 1970, at the height of the Vietnam War, featuring a pre-resignation Richard Nixon, could provide viewers with enough comedic material to elicit laughter, but Liza Johnson’s lighthearted trifle Elvis and Nixon (Amazon Studios) does just that. Based on the Oval Office meeting between Elvis Presley (Michael Shannon) and Nixon (Kevin Spacey), immortalized in the famous photograph, the film brings some levity to an otherwise dire time in history. Responding to the unrest Elvis sees on the multiple screens in his Graceland TV room (leading him to draw his pistol and fire at the offending idiot box), he pens a letter to then President Nixon, offering his services (including his karate skills) in exchange for an official badge and title (all undercover, of course). Calling on longtime associate Jerry (Alex Pettyfer), Elvis leaves Memphis and heads to Washington DC to hand-deliver his missive and then checks into a hotel awaiting word from the President. Eventually, the letter makes its way to Nixon, and with eager aides Krogh (Colin Hanks) and Chapin (Evan Peters) nearby, a meeting is arranged. There are several humorous moments leading up to the meeting. The meeting itself, in which Elvis violates practically everything he agreed to prior to entering the Oval Office, is very funny. But there’s something slightly off about the whole venture. Of the two, Shannon earns Elvis’ top billing, owning every scene in which he appears, and narrowly avoiding making the King the caricature he had become. Spacey’s Nixon, however, is unnecessarily wacky, slithery and ghoulish. Physically and socially awkward, Nixon comes off as more of a desperate buffoon than ever before.

rish writer/director John Carney has stumbled on his own niche. Seemingly inspired by the 1991 hit movie The Commitments, Carney has crafted his own cottage industry of films about unlikely musicians who team up to make beautiful music together (see 2007’s Oscar-winning Once and 2013’s Begin Again).
Set in Dublin in 1985, at a time when Irish immigrants were flocking to London for work, Sing Street (The Weinstein Company) centers around a family coming apart at the seams. In an effort to make ends meet, broke and bickering parents Robert (Aiden Gillen) and Penny (Maria Doyle Kennedy, who appeared in The Commitments!) decide to send musically-inclined Conor (newcomer Ferdia Walsh-Peelo), 15, the third of their three offspring, to the Christian Brothers school on Synge Street. Immediately zoomed in on for being “too posh” for the school, Conor is abused by principal Brother Baxter (Don Wycherly) and relentless school bully Barry (Ian Kenny). However, Conor finds new purpose in life when he meets Raphina (Lucy Boynton), who lives across from the school in a girls’ home. Raphina, not much older than Conor, has a much 42

older boyfriend and big dreams of a modeling career in London. But that doesn’t deter Conor, whom Raphina has nicknamed Cosmo, in his pursuit of her. With the aid of smooth-mumbling classmate Darren (Ben Carolan), as well as fellow student musicians Eamon (Mark McKenna), Ngig (Percy Chamburuka) and others, Conor forms a band, inspired by the popularity of music videos and encouraged by stoner older brother Brendan (Jack Reynor). Brendan, who in taking control of Conor’s musical education, watches his own failed music dreams coming alive. As the band, named Sing Street, evolves, so does Conor and his appearance. He incorporates visual influences ranging from Duran Duran to the Cure to Spandau Ballet and other superstar acts of the era. Conor and Eamon also become something of a powerhouse songwriting duo and the results are heard throughout the film. Where Carney’s Once was a far more serious and heartbreaking musical saga, Sing Street goes for a lighter touch. That doesn’t make its message of following your dream any less enjoyable or melodic.
TUESDAY 5/17 @ 7:30PM Culture Room Kitschy, glam rock band The Struts are influenced by a wide range of rockers, including Queen, Def Leppard, and Oasis. The British group has been on the scene for almost a decade, opening for such legendary bands as The Rolling Stones and Motley Crue. Their 2014 debut album Everybody Wants allowed them to branch off into a larger fan base on the strength of singles “Could Have Been Me” and “Kiss This.” Made Violent will be opening. 7:30 p.m. Culture Room. 3045 N. Federal Highway. Fort Lauderdale. 33306.
n HAIR: THE AMERICAN TRIBAL LOVE-ROCK MUSICAL
WEDNESDAY 5/18 @ 7:30PM Kravis Center The enigmatic and thoughtful musical Hair became a sensation during its 1960s run. A recent revival renewed interest in the Vietnam-era story dealing with themes of alienation, civil disobedience, and race relations. The characters search for meaning in their lives while having to deal with an approaching draft for a war they don’t believe in. Songs from the wildly popular soundtrack include the title track, “Age of Aquarius,” and “Walking in Space.” 7:30 p.m. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. 701 Okeechobee Blvd. West Palm Beach. 33401.

Fighting Age and Disease with
Nutrient Therapy
n
The causes of disease can be complex, but one thing is clear – our bodies require proper nutrition to fight disease and maintain our health. The energy we need to stay healthy comes from the nutrients we absorb through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Our bodies metabBy olize these Dr. Ferdinard nutrients to Cabrera create energy and repair injuries. We absorb 100 percent of the necessary nutrients through the GI tract, making it the engine that fuels all the body’s functions.
THE EFFECTS OF AGE ON THE GI TRACT Proper nutrition depends on the integrity of the GI system and intestinal membranes. Unfortunately, the GI tract
becomes dysfunctional as we age. This is partially due to our poor dietary habits, especially in the United States. Processed foods full of fillers prevent proper absorption of nutrients.
With increased age, our bodies also face increased toxicity, due to the absorption of toxins from items we consume and from the environment around us. Other factors that negatively impact the integrity of the GI tract include increased production of acid, more food allergies, and lower production of digestive enzymes in the pancreas.
to gluten that prevent them from absorbing the nutrients their bodies need for healthy metabolic functioning. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one of four Americans suffers from some type of malabsorption issue. This statistic drives home the point that ordinary nutrition is not sufficient for a large number of Americans. Your body may not be getting the vital energy you need to stay disease free. Even if you take dietary supplements, a dysfunctional GI tract will prevent the full absorption of those nutrients.
FACTORS THAT PREVENT NUTRITION
HOW IV NUTRIENT THERAPY CAN HELP
Gluten sensitivity is big news these days. It is suspected that approximately 10 percent of the population in the United States suffers from gluten sensitivity. Even people who don’t have celiac disease – the condition where a person cannot tolerate gluten at all – can have reactions
Combining ordinary nutrition with IV nutrients assures your body will receive 100 percent of the nutrients you need to maintain good health. IV nutrient therapy adds nutrients directly to the blood stream; it’s the most direct and effective method for delivering nutrition to the
body. Based on a person’s needs, nutrients can be customized to provide maximum benefit. Nutrient therapy is also much faster than consuming nutrients orally, because the nutrients don’t need to move all the way down to your GI tract and be absorbed before your body can use them. Nutrient therapy is used to treat many conditions, including diabetes, arthritis, chronic fatigue, and irritable bowel syndrome. Not only is it used to treat existing diseases, but it may prevent new conditions by reducing free radicals that contribute to cell death, and helping maintain healthy metabolic functioning. Nutrient therapy can also improve your everyday quality of life. People use nutrient treatments for hangovers, to improve their skin, reduce stress, and keep them feeling young and energetic. For major or minor medical problems and for a better quality of life, IV nutrient therapy provides a direct source of the energy your body needs to stay healthy. nn
