Owners Of NYC Gay Hotel Face Criticism Over Ted Cruz Dinner NEW YORK (AP) - An owner of a gay-oriented New York City hotel lashed out at “extremists” who have urged a boycott over a dinner invitation to Sen. Ted Cruz, a vocal opponent of same-sex marriage. But gay-rights advocates outraged by the invitation to the Republican presidential candidate say they will keep up the pressure by shunning all the properties owned by the men who hosted the dinner. Hotelier Mati Weiderpass wrote in an op-ed piece in the New York Observer on May 10 that since hosting the April 20 dinner he has been “inundated with hateful, biased social media messages, and attacks from gay extremists (do I dare say the word?) who demand inclusion, but do not believe in dialogue.” “It is amazing that my businesses are being boycotted by some because I hosted a discussion with an elected official,” said Weiderpass, who owns The Out NYC in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen with Ian Reisner.
Opponents say Weiderpass and Reisner should have known that inviting Cruz would not sit well with the gay community they cater to. “Don’t take my money with one hand and stab me in the back with the other,” said Ken Kidd, who works in administration at New York University. Kidd said he usually has a summer share in the gay beach community of Fire Island Pines, where Reisner and another partner own businesses including the Pavilion nightclub. If he goes to the Pines this summer, Kidd said, “it’ll be for a noisy protest.” The Out NYC was billed as New York’s first gay boutique hotel when it opened in 2012. Several guests strolling out of the hotel Tuesday said they were not American and did not know anything about Cruz. But organizations that had events planned at the hotel including the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus canceled them when a story about the Cruz dinner appeared in The New York Times. Jason Cannon, the chorus’ interim executive director, said the chorus canceled an April 25 fundraiser even though a deposit had been paid. “We needed to make sure that it was
very clear to the community that we were in full support of the community,” Cannon said. In his op-ed piece, Weiderpass said the dinner he and Reisner hosted in their apartment was not a campaign fundraiser but an opportunity “to discuss a number of important issues, including support for Israel and support for gay rights.” Although Cruz opposes same-sex marriage, Reisner told the Times that the Texas senator told fellow dinner guests, “If one of my daughters was gay, I would love them just as much.” Weiderpass and Reisner did not respond to a request for comment placed through their business, Parkview Developers. A spokesman for Cruz declined to comment.
Arkansas High Court Rules That Current Justices Should Hear Marriage Case LITTLE ROCK (AP) - Arkansas’ highest court ruled on May 7 that its current lineup of justices should decide whether to legalize gay marriage in the
state, which could clear the way for a decision that has been delayed for months by an unusually public split on the court. The state Supreme Court ruled that Justice Rhonda Wood, who took office in January, should participate in the case, not Special Justice Robert McCorkindale, who was appointed by former Gov. Mike Beebe last year and who heard oral arguments in November. “Our constitution provides for the elected justices of this court to determine pending appeals,” the court wrote in its ruling. “Special justices are temporary and their appointments cannot be used to thwart the clear language and intent of our constitution.” The dispute over whether Wood or McCorkindale would hear the case effectively sidelined it. The state is appealing Pulaski County Judge Chris Piazza’s decision last year striking down a constitutional amendment and earlier state law defining marriage as between a man and a woman. More than 500 gay couples were issued marriage licenses before the state Supreme Court suspended Piazza’s ruling. Chief Justice Jim Hannah and Justice Paul Danielson recused from the case over which justice should participate, and both accused the court majority of unnecessarily delaying the case. Wood also recused from the case over whether she should serve. Gov. Asa Hutchinson last month appointed three justices to the spinoff case. In the May 7 ruling, the court defended its actions and said the dispute needed to be resolved before it could take up the gay marriage case. “The purpose of the present action is to resolve this issue so that the underlying case can be determined and not for the purpose of delay,” Justice Karen Baker wrote in the court’s ruling. Cheryl Maples, an attorney for the gay couples challenging Arkansas’ ban, initially argued that McCorkindale should decide the case, but Maples reversed course and told the court she wouldn’t take a position on the matter. She said she believed McCorkindale should be hearing the case, but said she believed the court would strike down the ban no matter the lineup.
accommodations laws for transgender people and any worries people might have have been debunked. He also said he’s heard the concerns of parents and transgender students, including one who had to carefully plan a six-hour drive back from college without using a restroom after having once been kicked out of one and told to leave. “I drive down to DC not infrequently,” Kennedy said. “Never in my mind do I think about timing that or not drinking water or Diet Coke or coffee or whatever else - to not have to use the restroom along the way.” Kennedy said the reluctance of Massachusetts lawmakers to expand civil rights for transgender people makes it more difficult for him to make the same argument in Congress.
“It gives some critics cover to say, ‘Hey, look, progressive Massachusetts hasn’t even put in these protections. Why should the rest of the country?’” he said. Attorney General Maura Healey also backs the change in the public accommodations law. Healey said that Massachusetts, despite helping lead the way on gay marriage, still has work to do to protect the civil rights of transgender residents and keep lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people safe. She said LGBT youths are more likely to be bullied, to run away from home or to attempt suicide than other young people. “I hope that one day soon a day will come when being gay or transgender makes no difference at all,” she said.

BOSTON (AP) - U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy is pressing state lawmakers to approve legislation strengthening legal protections for transgender people. Kennedy, a Democrat, said Massachusetts lags behind 17 other states and Washington, D.C., which have updated public accommodations laws to include transgender people. Among the states with tougher protections, he said, are several in New England: Maine, Vermont, Connecticut and Rhode Island. “Given Massachusetts’ history of leadership on equality, on equal protections ... it’s pretty surprising our name is absent from that list,” he said Thursday. Former Gov. Deval Patrick, also a Democrat, signed a bill in 2011 protecting transgender people from discrimination in the workplace and housing by adding “gender identity and expression” to the state’s civil rights laws. It’s time to broaden those protections, Kennedy said. An aide to Republican Gov. Charlie Baker said he backs the law signed by Patrick but doesn’t support changes to the state’s public accommodations law. “The administration fully supports the Transgender Equal Rights Act that became law in 2011 because the administration believes everyone in Massachusetts should be protected against discrimination and prefers the current law regarding public accommodations,” Baker spokesman Tim Buckley said. Baker, in his failed 2010 campaign for governor, labeled legislation that would extend public accommodations protections to transgender people the “bathroom bill.” Kennedy said critics have to get past their discomfort when it comes to protecting the rights of fellow citizens. He said he’s used public restrooms in states with public

AUSTIN (AP) - The state Senate has voted to allow clergy members to refuse performing marriages that violate their beliefs, further shielding Texas from a possible U.S. Supreme Court ruling allowing gay couples to wed. Approved on May 11 by a vote of 21-10, Republican Sen. Craig Estes’ bill requires a final Senate vote before heading to the House. It raises some of the same issues as so-called “religious objections” proposals that sparked national outcry after being approved in Indiana and Arkansas. Supporters say such measures protect religious freedoms, but advocacy groups argue they are licenses to discriminate against gay people. Texas’ measure is less controversial, largely restating existing law. Still, it follows the nation’s high court hearing arguments about the constitutionality of gay marriage - which some supporters of Estes’ proposal openly decry as offensive to God.

“I disagree with their decision, but we can live with it and maybe we can get a ruling finally,” Maples said. The ruling doesn’t guarantee that the Arkansas court will decide before the U.S. Supreme Court, which heard oral arguments last week on whether to legalize gay marriage and is expected to rule by late June. A federal appeals court has put a separate challenge to Arkansas’ ban on hold while the nation’s high court decides. Also pending before the state Supreme Court is a request by the state for new oral arguments before the court, a move that Maples has opposed. Attorney General Leslie Rutledge said she was pleased with Thursday’s ruling. “My office stands ready to defend Amendment 83 in a second oral argument should the Justices decide that it would be beneficial,” she said in a statement released by her office.

Guam Gay Marriage Case Won’t Wait For U.S. High Court Ruling
May 13, 2015 13
HAGATNA (AP) - A lawsuit challenging Guam’s same-sex marriage ban will move forward later this month after a federal judge decided against postponing it until after the U.S. Supreme Court rules on gay nuptials this summer. But U.S. District Court of Guam Chief Judge Frances Tydingco-Gatewood gave Guam’s governor and the department that denied a lesbian couple a marriage license some extra time to work with a private attorney, The Pacific Daily News reported May 8. That’s because Guam’s attorney

HAVANA (AP) - The daughter of Cuban President Raul Castro sponsored a blessing ceremony May 9 for gay couples on an island where gay marriage remains illegal. Nearly two dozen gay couples held hands or embraced, some crying, as Protestant clergymen from the U.S. and Canada blessed them as part of official ceremonies leading up to the Global Day against Homophobia on May 17. Castro’s daughter Mariela heads Cuba’s Center for Sex Education, which has been pushing for gay rights in a country with a history of persecuting homosexuals. While she was careful not to call Saturday’s ceremony a wedding, the event had most of the trappings of matrimony. Luis Enrique Mederos and his partner for 14 years, Alain Morales, approached clergyman including Troy Perry, founder of Los Angeles’ gay-friendly Metropolitan Community Church, and held hands beneath a canopy while the pastors blessed their relationship. “Luis, I give you my life,” Morales said, as the crowd of 300 applauded and cheered. “It’s a step to strengthen our relation-
ship because we’re both religious, believers,” said Mederos, a 47-year-old graphic designer. He said he saw the ceremony as an important step toward the eventual legalization of gay marriage in Cuba. “It’s a dream for the Cuban gay and transgender community that one day it won’t be just a symbolic and we can get married, because we’re also part of this changing world,” he said, embracing Morales, 38. Uruguay, Argentina and a string of U.S. states, along with several in Mexico, have legalized gay marriage or civil unions. Homosexuals were hounded and persecuted during much of the presidency of Fidel Castro. After handing power to his brother Raul, the elder Castro said he regretted his treatment of gays, and Cuba has been granting increasing rights to gays in recent years. Mariela Castro is the most visible gay rights advocate on the island, using her position as a member of Cuba’s ruling family to push for reforms. Last year, as a member of parliament, she voted against a workers’ rights bill that she felt didn’t go far enough to prevent discrimination against people with HIV or with unconventional gender identities. It was an unprecedented action in an assembly that uniformly votes unanimously in favor of government proposals. Castro did not attend the blessing ceremony, but headed a colorful gay rights march by more than 1,000 people along
general has taken a different position from Gov. Eddie Calvo, saying the U.S. territory should issue marriage licenses to gay couples. Attorney General Elizabeth BarrettAnderson appointed a local attorney to defend Calvo and the Office of Vital Statistics registrar because she will not do so. Loretta M. Pangelinan and Kathleen M. Aguero, both 28, sued April 13 after the registrar refused them a license because Guam law defines marriage as a union between two people of the opposite sex. The couple based their lawsuit on a 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decision in favor of same-sex marriage. The U.S. District Court of Guam falls under the 9th Circuit. If Guam allows gay marriage, it would be the first U.S. territory to do so. In a statement Friday, Calvo said he told his administration to prepare for two possible outcomes from the Supreme Court case: a ruling saying states have the right to define marriage, or one recognizing same-sex marriage as a fundamental right. If it’s the former, discussion on the matter likely will continue in the Guam, the governor said. “I believe it will open up the opportunity for further conversation so that the true will of the people can be reflected in our laws,” Calvo said. “And as ardent a defender as I have been for our local law as currently written, I will be as ardent in defending any new law, if that is the will of the people.” In his statement, the governor also took a jab at another civil rights issue the right of island citizens to be able to vote for president. He said the island’s same-sex marriage law is “being challenged by federal judges that were nominated by a U.S. president and confirmed by a U.S. Senate, none of whom were elected through a process that included the people of Guam.” Guam residents are U.S. citizens, but they don’t have the right to cast ballots for president. The territory elects a delegate to the U.S. House, but the delegate may not vote on legislation. Guam has no representation in the U.S. Senate.

one of Havana’s main streets. A few minutes after Mederos and Morales, Belkis Gonzalez and Maria de los Angeles Machin stepped up to receive their blessing. A couple since 1989, they raised Machin’s son and Gonzalez’s daughter together. “This blessing means a lot to us,” said Gonzalez, a 48-year-old screenwriter. “It’s a reaffirmation that we have a relationship of love and we aren’t hurting anyone. If God put us together, it’s because we wanted us to be united.” The event came a day before another manifestation of changed times in Cuba: Raul Castro’s visit with Pope Francis at the Vatican. The church and the Cuban government were in a state of open hostility in the years after the 1959 revolution that put Fidel Castro in power. But a thaw began in the 1990s. Cuba removed a constitutional clause declaring the country an atheist state, Pope John Paul II paid a momentous visit in 1998, Pope Benedict XVI visited in 2012, and Cuba made Good Friday an official holiday. Raul Castro was expected to discuss both diplomatic talks with the U.S. and the pope’s planned September visit to Cuba when he visits the pontiff on May 10.

Annual Harvey Milk Breakfast In Orlando Celebrates LGBT Advances

Episcopal Bishop Says Child Of Gay Dads Will Be Baptized ORLANDO--Episcopal Bishop Greg Brewer said May 9 that Jack, an infant whose parents are gay parishioners of Cathedral Church of St. Luke, will be baptized at the church after all. Brewer made the decision to baptize Jack after meeting with parents Rich and Eric McCaffrey on May 8. “It was a very good meeting,” Brewer said. Rich McCaffrey posted a statement on his Facebook page that Brewer was supportive of Jack being baptized at the cathedral. “We are appreciative and are looking forward to the baptism to take place this summer,” he wrote. In his statement, McCaffrey also explained why he and his husband,
Eric, will return to the church. “We are returning because we still have faith in the goodness of people, and we trust people have good intent and ultimately will do the right thing,” he wrote. The McCaffreys’ son was scheduled to be baptized on April 19. But before the event, the men said they were told by the cathedral’s Dean Anthony Clark that it was being postponed because of objections from some members of the congregation. The controversy then became public when Rich McCaffrey posted it on his Facebook page earlier this month. An Internet petition on act.faithfulamerica. org drew more than 20,000 people. The bishop said he did not oppose the baptism of the child. He added there was some disagreement between Clark and the two men as to whether the date of the baptism was firm or tentative. Martin Comas of the Orlando Sentinel contributed to this report.
ORLANDO--The last time Stuart Milk visited Orlando was in May of 2014. On May 11, he was back as guest speaker for the annual Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast presented by the Mills 50 district’s gay and lesbian community center. But in those past 12 months, Milk said, there has been a sea change of events nationally for the LGBT community. “What amazing history,” he said. “Of course, one of the biggest things is we now have gay marriage.” Likewise, Milk said, anti-gay legislation proposed in a number of states – including in Indiana – got defeated, after not just gay activists but many conservative business leaders protested. “All segments of society stood up and said ‘no,’” said Milk, the founder of the Harvey Milk Foundation. “We had a community rise up and say, ‘We’re not going backwards.’” At the awards breakfast held at the Orlando Museum of Art, Milk noted that there was also cause to celebrate progress made in the city of Orlando. That was one of the reasons why Milk provided the Lifetime Achievement Award to City Commissioner Patty Sheehan, who was first elected in 2000 as Orlando’s first openly gay city official and who played a key role in establishing the city’s domestic partners registry. “There are a lot of things that you can do in life that are easier than being the first,” Milk said. Milk is an international human rights activist, and the nephew of Harvey Milk, who ran for and won the office of city supervisor in San Francisco in 1977. He became the first openly gay city official elected in the U.S. Harvey Milk was killed on Nov. 27, 1978, when he was shot twice in the head by a fellow city supervisor, Dan White. The foundation, and the breakfast, serve to honor the achievements of the gay community and its friends and supporters.
“There have been a lot of victories since then,” said Scott Maxwell, the Orlando Sentinel columnist who served as the emcee of the breakfast. “That was 40 years ago, and a lot has changed since then, but none of it came easy,” Maxwell added. Mayor Buddy Dyer said it was an honor for the city of Orlando to host this annual breakfast. “This annual event allows us to remember the character of a man who helped to pave the way for so many others,” Dyer said. More importantly, the mayor said, was the fact that Orlando embraces diversity by banning anti-gay discrimination, providing a domestic partners registry and supporting the civil rights of all its residents. “I absolutely believe diversity is one of the great strengths we have,” Dyer said. “We were one of the first cities in Florida to establish a domestic partnership registry.” Dyer also noted that in January, when a federal court overturned Florida’s ban on gay marriage, he presided over a ceremony in front of City Hall where more than 50 gay couples got married on the first day it became legal. “For a tiny couple of hours on that morning, I held the record for presiding over the highest number of samesex marriages in Florida,” Dyer said. “I’m proud to be mayor of such an inclusive city.” Michael Freeman of the Orlando Sentinel contributed to this report.

Jacksonville Pastor Defends Church Sign Warning Gays To Repent JACKSONVILLE--A sign outside a Jacksonville church that reads “Homosexuals must repent or go to hell,” has outraged local community members and spurred an online petition drive. According to WJAX-TV, the sign is posted outside the First Conservative Baptist Church in Jacksonville. Church pastor Gene Youngblood
the sign. “I’m a Christian and I believe that God loves everybody, and if you feel that homosexuals should adhere to something, that’s not the way to do it. If the church wants to deliver a message and their goal is to save homosexuals, then you would do it with kindness rather than blurt out a message telling them they’re going straight to hell.” “It is my sincere prayer that perhaps ‘one’ practicing homosexual will have read our sign and will repent before it is too late and they are cast into hell,” wrote Youngblood. “Hell is a real place, and anyone not believing in the reality of hell, will not change the temperature of the flames a single degree.” The Change.org petition said the sign does not follow the Bible’s teachings, with one commenter posting it is not “Christian love.” “Nowehere in the Bible does it mention gays and hell in the same sentence,” the petition reads. “There is no place in Jacksonville for such an ignorant and hatred-filled sign.” Tim Marcin of the International Business Times contributed to the story.

defended his message despite an online petition that has begun circulating to have the sign taken down. Community members told WJXT that it isn’t the first time that objectionable messages have appeared on the sign outside the church. But those same members said they refrained from raising a ruckus to avoid giving the church unwanted publicity. Youngblood said he is simply exercising his right to free speech. “Because we love people (yet, as directed in Scripture to hate the sin), we therefore want to warn them of the coming judgment of God on the sin of homosexuality (and any other sin that is not repented of ),” Youngblood released in a statement to the media. The petition on Change.org calls for the sign to be taken down, calling it “homophobic and bigoted.” As of late in the afternoon on May 11, the petition garned about 200 signatures. Some Jacksonville locals said they were appalled by the message. “I was a little shocked, that they will deliver a message in that manner,” said Evaristo Ghines, who lives near

But they are in reality, homeless,” said St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman at a recent ground-breaking for Starting Right Now, a facility for homeless teens scheduled to open in January 2016. A 2014 report by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services gathered data from 11 cities around the country, including Port St. Lucie in Florida. “Honestly, I would say looking at the homeless population that we see come through here many more of them are LGBT identified,” said Jeremiah Kerr, outreach and development coordinator at the Ybor Youth Clinic in Tampa. The clinic is in a gray brick building with an interior of modern furniture and oversized art, at the end of a street of busy bars, restaurants and nightclubs. It provides treatment for STDs, family planning, and substance abuse and mental health services to homeless youth. They serve youth between the ages of 13 and 24, but they have helped kids as young as 11. Christopher Rodriguez, now 20, left home at 17, never thinking he’d become homeless. Partly because of his sexuality, his relationship with his father grew strained, he said, and so he felt he had no choice. “At that age I felt like my father would’ve hated me as a person, would’ve had no respect for me as a person, would not have loved me as a person, and would have pretty much just wiped me away from his life as a person, if I had came out to him and told him,” he said. Rodriguez left on his own, but the most common reason for homelessness, cited by half of teens, was being asked by a parent or caregiver to leave. Less than a third said they had the option to go back home. “Or the neglect was just so bad that it felt like the only option. They might as well have been told to leave,” said Kerr. Almost a quarter of all homeless teens said they left home because of abuse or because of their caretaker’s alcohol or drug problem. And while more than 60 percent of homeless youth said they were victimized by threats, robbery, or physical or sexual assaults, Kerr says these problems sometimes happen in the shelters designed to help protect them. “This is absolutely something we see as a common occurrence among the youth that we serve. And unfortunately for many of them, especially the

New Hope For Cure: HIV “Can Opener” Exposes Virus’s Weakness

esearchers from the Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM) Research Centre in Canada have released a study detailing its research on a molecule that acts as a “can opener,” forcing the AIDS causing HIV virus to “open up like a flower,” exposing regions that are vulnerable to attack from the immune system. Study author Andrés Finzi, a professor at the University of Montreal, states the team also found that people infected with HIV-1 virus have naturally occurring antibodies with the potential to kill infected cells. “We just have to give them a little push by adding a tiny molecule that acts as a can opener to force the viral envelope to expose regions recognized by the antibodies, which forms a bridge with some cells of the immune system, initiating the attack,” Finzi said. The exciting news focused on a molecule called JP-III-48. While that molecule was originally developed by researchers from Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania, this study marks the first time it has been tested successfully on patients with HIV. Finzi believes that the molecule could be used as part of a treatment to eliminate the HIV reservoirs of people infected with the virus. “The solution is to develop a ‘shock and kill’ therapy,” he states. “We have to reactivate HIV reservoirs to force the virus out of its hiding place, then kill the infected cells with this molecule and the already present antibodies.” Previous research published earlier this year demonstrated that cells infected with HIV-1 were more easily eliminated when two HIV-specific proteins, Nef and Vpu, were deactivated by gene mutation. This find-
ing formed the basis of the new study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. These two proteins protect the virus from attack. If these proteins could be overcome, as it does with the addition of JP-III-48, the virus becomes vulnerable. The molecule could also be potentially used as a component in a twopart vaccine, alongside antibodies to
vast potential. Carolina has been at the forefront of HIV/AIDS research for the last 30 years. This first of its kind, jointownership model is a novel approach toward finding a cure, and we hope it serves as an invitation to the world’s best researchers and scientists.” Sir Andrew Witty, CEO of GSK, said: “This partnership is a testament to our past and present leadership, innova-
with the virus and around 39 million people have died from it. The primary treatment for people with HIV is antiretroviral therapy (ART), which involves taking a cocktail of at least three antiretroviral medications. While these medications do not destroy the HIV virus, they can stop it from progressing. Though such medications are life-
tion and commitment to this field. We are inspired by the confidence that with the right resources and research teams, we will be able to make a meaningful impact towards a cure for HIV.” GSK will provide a team of top scientists and $20 million over five years, all dedicated to finding an HIV cure rather than just a treatment. UNC-Chapel Hill will provide a team of 40 researchers to the project, to work alongside GSK’s team of scientists in perfecting the research. Since the HIV epidemic first hit in the early 1980s, almost 78 million people worldwide have been infected
saving, the virus is still widespread, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa where the population accounts for 71% of all HIV cases worldwide. The $20 million that GSK will invest into the new research center is separate from their investment into new antiretroviral therapies through their HIV Discovery Performance Unit based in North Carolina. Recently, GSK has faced in-house problems, including a bribery scandal in China. It is restructuring and is in a period of transformation, with its new chairman, Philip Hampton, taking charge.

target the virus. And while the hunt for a viable vaccine has been on going for over 30 years, the search was given new life this week by an announcement from British pharmaceutical manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) that it has formed a first-of-its-kind venture in a 50/50 partnership with University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The joint venture establishes a new company, Qura Therapeutics, and is the first to partner across public and private science. We should respect the states, and the definition of marriage should be left to democratically elected legislatures, not dictated from Washington. This bill will safeguard the ability of states to preserve traditional marriage for its residents,” Cruz feels. Then there is Ben Carson, the retired neurosurgeon and Republican presidential candidate who raised eyebrows last week when he told Newsmax that a potential Supreme Court ruling to legalize samesex marriage would not have to be implemented, because “the laws of the land comes from the legislative branch.” But Doctor, the constitutionality of those laws is judged by the Supreme Court. n a major flipflop on same-sex marriage, Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina apparently thinks the writing is on the wall where the upcoming Supreme Court ruling on the subject is concerned. Until this past weekend, Fiorina stood with all other announced Republican candidates in supporting a Constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. Not anymore. While speaking to a conservative blog in Iowa, the one-time Hewlett-Packard CEO told Caffeinated Thoughts that if the Supreme Court ruled in favor of samesex marriage across the country, she would accept it. Given the likelihood of that decision becoming reality, Fiorina’s position places her on the right side of history, but against most other Republicans. “I think the Supreme Court ruling will become the law of the land, and however much I may agree or disagree with it, I wouldn’t support an amendment to reverse it,” Fiorina said. “I very much hope that we would come to a place now in this nation where we can support their decision and at the same time support people to have, to hold religious views and to protect their right to exercise those views. “I think this is a nation that should be able to accept a government shouldn’t discriminate in how it provides benefits, and that people have a right to their religious views, and those views need to be protected.” Fiorina’s new all-things-to-all-people position stands in direct opposition to other Republican candidates, including former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee. Last February, Huckabee, appeared on CNN’s State of the Union program in what was labeled as an “exclusive chat” with the presidential candidate. You may recall that when asked about his opinion of same-sex marriage, the self-professed lover of pork rinds equated gay marriage to drinking and profanity. “I don’t drink alcohol, but gosh -- a lot of my friends, maybe most of them, do,” Huckabee said. “You know, I don’t use profanity, but believe me, I’ve got a lot of

“Michael Sam fits the conventional masculinity,” said Signorile. “He could have assimilated. But when he decided to kiss his boyfriend on national TV it ignited a firestorm.” Signorile hopes to see more such firestorms from others like Sam. “Really showing our differences is how we attain our rights,” he said. “We bring something to the table that is new and different and interesting. And no, let’s have full rights. Let’s demand full equality, fight it out and see what you get.”
Signorile feels, that the backlash may in fact be growing in direct parallel with seemingly wider acceptance. He is a little cynical about the response to Indiana, too, even though he was pleased to see so many corporations take a stand. “Why don’t you ban travel to all the 29 states that allow discrimination?” he asked rhetorically. “The mainstream doesn’t realize that we have no rights in 29 states,” he continued. “People have no idea there are no federal protections. And in the media, there is no sense of the reality of what’s happening.” Accordingly, Signorile was highly critical of the media’s handling of the Aaron Schock story and the backlash, even from gay reporters, when some of their colleagues insisted on pursuing the rather-more-thanjust-rumors about the Congressman’s sexual persuasion. “A possibly closeted gay politician voting anti-gay is a big issue for us within the context of the fight for civil rights,” Signorile explained in a Huffington Post column. Canada, are part of a run-up to what’s being reported as a Global Day against Homophobia on May 17. To her credit, Mariela Castro has been pushing for LGBT rights in a country with a sad legacy of persecuting homosexuals. In fact, LGBT people were persecuted during much of the presidency of Fidel Castro. After handing power to his brother Raul, the elder Castro said he regretted his treatment of gay and lesbian Cubans, while the government has slowly been granting more and more rights to the LGBT population recently. Mariela Castro is the most visible gay rights advocate on the island. She’s been using her position as a member of the Cuban elite to push reforms. Last year, as a member of parliament, she voted against a workers’ rights bill that she felt failed to prevent discrimination against people with HIV or those expressing different gender identities. Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Brazil and states in the U.S. and Mexico have legalized same-sex marriage or civil unions. What this all means is that Cuba is

Raul Castro was expected to discuss the pope’s planned visit to Cuba in September. Mariela Castro did not attend the blessing ceremony but headed a colorful march by more than 1,000 people along one of Havana’s main streets. Luis Enrique Mederos and his partner for 14 years, Alain Morales, approached Troy Perry, founder of Los Angeles’ gay-friendly Metropolitan Community Church, and held hands beneath a canopy while the pastors blessed their relationship, according to the Associated Press. “Luis, I give you my life,” said 38-year-old Morales, as a crowd 300 well-wishers roared and cheered. Mederos, a 47-year-old graphic designer, said “it’s a dream for the Cuban gay and transgender community that one day it won’t be just a symbolic… because we’re also part of this changing world,” he said, embracing Morales. n just a few short months, there has been a sea change 90 miles off the coast of Florida’s Key West. Cuba is red hot. The communist island-nation is engaging the world community on a new level thanks to U.S. President Barack Obama, who decided that his administration would begin normalizing relations with the Castro government despite some heavy opposition from Republicans and their anti-communist supporters in South Florida and elsewhere. It hasn’t taken long for the floodgates to open. Cuba is hardly communist any longer. The regime has been passing reforms for years now. The island is now housing rental service Airbnb’s fastest growing market. The president of France has called for an end to the U.S. embargo after paying a historic visit to Havana on May 10. The first ferry service in decades between the U.S. and Cuba will likely start operations soon as the country drops off the official U.S. list of terrorist countries. All things Cuban, from athletes and entertainers to vaccines and cuisine, are becoming more visible across America’s cultural landscape. Now comes word from Cuba that President Raul Castro’s daughter, Mariela, helped organize a mass ceremony of religious-style blessings on May 9 for dozens, maybe hundreds, of same-sex couples, despite gay marriage being officially banned. The event came a day before Raul Castro’s visit with Pope Francis at the Vatican. The church and the Cuban government were in a state of open hostility in the years after the 1959 revolution that put Fidel Castro in power. But a thaw began in the 1990s. DINING
Tijuana Taxi Co.: Where Fresh Food Meets Olé BY TIM HART
I decided to try this restaurant out for “Dining Out with Broward House.” This is a charity exercise that is worth the effort. I was looking for a place on the west side of town and the Tijuana Taxi Co. was the only choice. Tijuana Taxi Co. serves delicious authentic Mexican food and the best margaritas this side of the border! Huge portions, patio seating, amazing cocktails and an unusually inviting atmosphere make The Taxi one of the hottest eateries in town! The restaurant has great locations conveniently located in Coral Springs and Davie—with Deerfield Beach is coming soon!!! The Davie location is situated just north of Griffin Road and University on the west side of the street. The layout is classic South Florida – patio seating surrounds a very spacious indoor seating section with a bar and ample seating (hi tops, traditional tables and booths). I arrived around 6:00pm and was greeted and seated by the hostess. Emma, our very capable waitress, greeted us immediately and took our drink and appetizer order. Chips and salsa are standard fare for the table. The menu is huge (spiral bound!) with tons of items to choose from. I ordered the Popcorn Shrimp appetizer ($6). Other appetizers include Chicken Wings ($10), Nachos ($7), Queso Dip ($5) and a Conquistador Platter ($11). My dinner companion ordered a Sangria Margarita which was very ample and colorful. The lunch/dinner portion of the menu includes Quesadillas with Chicken, Mushrooms, Pork and Veggie ($8 - $11); Salads of all types; Wraps, Sandwiches and Burgers. This is just the beginning. Every form of Mexican food is featured and there are some mouthwatering combinations.
Let’s start with the Fajitas – Mahi- Mahi, Chicken, Shrimp and Steak ($12 - $14) and the Three Amigo Combo (chicken, shrimp and steak) for $21. Next are Taco Platters, Enchilada Platters, Burritos Platters and Veggie platters (all $8 – 11). And if all that is not enough to choose from, there are a number of different house specialties and combination plates. My dining partner ordered the Jumbo Chicken Chop ($12) – a large chicken breast dredged in bread crumbs, pan fried and served in a creamy garlic sauce. I ordered the Key West ($13), a combo platter consisting of a shrimp enchilada, a Mahi-Mahi taco and three grilled shrimp. Both meals were delicious. We topped the dinner off with a fabulous Banana Cheesecake dish and ice cream. When I arrived, there was plenty of room and plenty of parking. I have never seen a restaurant fill up so quickly. By the time I left, there were no seats to be had (and this place is big) and no parking either. Clearly this is a popular local Davie hangout. Hats and sombreros off to the Tijuana Taxi Co. Every table that evening promoted the Broward House Charity and the entire wait staff was instructed to discuss this most important fund raiser with the patrons. Broward House is a not-for-profit social services organization with 25 years of providing services for our community impacted by HIV and other health concerns.

5/15 Kings of Chaos
This rock supergroup is the brain child of Gun N’ Roses members Duff McKagan, Gilby Clarke, and Matt Sorum. The group includes various parts of uber-famous rock bands of yesteryear, like Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top, Robin Zander from Cheap Trick, Glenn Hughes from Deep Purple, and Steve Stevens from Billy Idol. Although the group is rather light on original material (so far they have only released one single), the band has perfected the stage setting, playing classic rock songs like “Surrender,” “White Wedding,” “Smoke on the Water,” and “Cheap Sunglasses.” Tonight they play all of the old favorites at the Hard Rock Live. 8:00 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 5747 Seminole Way. in her first dramatic acting role, this 1968 film is one of the riskiest and most underrated movies of its time. Set in the swank New York suburbs (a turf Cheever knew well and wrote about with regularity), The Swimmer follows Ned (Burt Lancaster), the fit titular aquatic sports enthusiast, who plans to take a dip in the string of pools across the county that lead to his house. Sounds ambitious, right? Consider that the character is supposed to be in his early 50s, as was Lancaster at the time of the filming. Most of the other men his age that Ned encounters on his The D Train quest, comment on his exceptional (Courtesy of trailer.com) physical condition because a majority of them have gone to seed on fattening foods and liquor. Lancaster, no stranger to parading his physique onscreen (see From Here to Eternity), spends almost the entire movie in a pair of form fitting blue trunks. The only time he’s not in them is when he pays a visit to the home of an eccentric, elderly nudist couple. In the early part of Ned’s journey, he is welcomed by his neighbors. As he progresses, however, he encounters fewer and fewer people who are happy to see him. His reputation as a “suburban stud” precedes him. The wives with whom he has carried on are less than thrilled to see him, as are their cuckolded husbands. here’s almost as much to admire about The D Train (IFC), co-written/ co-directed by Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul, as there is to dislike. First, you have to give Mogel and Paul credit for attempting to breathe some new life into what has become the tired class reunion genre (see Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, Peggy Sue Got Married, Grosse Point Blank, 10 Years). Plus, their concept – a shlubby, forgettable and mostly disliked member of the class reunion committee promises to get a more desirable classmate to attend the big party – is an original take on a familiar theme. The aforementioned desirable classmate is Oliver Lawless (the always watchable James Marsden), renowned class stud who left Pittsburgh for Hollywood to make it as an actor. His biggest accomplishment to date is a commercial for Banana Boat sunscreen, an ad in regular rotation on TV. The shlub is nickname-obsessed Dan (Jack Black), the D Train of the movie’s title. Dan’s biggest accomplishment is marrying high school sweetheart and popular girl Stacey (the always fantastic Kathryn Hahn), meaning that Dan could move up in the social strata. But that doesn’t make Dan, also the father of teen Zach (Russell Posner), a better person. He’s actually the opposite; a pathological liar whose tall tales get him into trouble at work with long-suffering boss Bill (Jeffrey Tambor), as well as at home and, of course, at the reunion. How much trouble? Dan arranges a fake business trip to L.A. to woo Oliver on the company dime but gets more than he bargained for when Bill accompanies him. He also gets the surprise of his life when he discovers that Oliver is comfortably bisexual and, after a drug-alcoholfueled night on the town, Dan ends up in the sack with him.

5/16 Bike Movie Night: Pee Wee’s Big Adventure
Before becoming one of America’s favorite jokes after an unfortunate wrong-movie-theater incident, Paul Reubens captivated the culture with his wacky, childish character Pee-Wee Herman. In this successful Tim Burton film, Herman embarks on a similar adventure to the one told in the 1948 film Bicycle Thieves—a nationwide search for his stolen bike. The film will be screened outdoors in honor of National Bike Month. 8:00 p.m. Hemming Park. In this unique annual event, celeb- Laura and Duval streets. ing a dumbbell palm forward in the right hand. Proceed to curl the weight up until biceps meets forearm. Pause, squeeze the contraction, and then slowly lower to starting position. Perform eight to twelve reps, and then switch the weight to the left hand for another set. Perform 3 sets with each arm. Don’t be surprised if one bicep is stronger or bigger than the other, this exercise will help promote symmetry and allow the weaker muscle to catch up. Concentration dumbbell curls allow you to isolate each bicep and make it work hard without the help of the other muscle groups. Kneeling on the left knee, grasp a dumbbell palm up in the right hand just off the floor, elbow against the inner right thigh. Proceed to curl the weight up until bicep meets forearm. Squeeze and pause, then lower to starting position slowly. Perform eight to twelve reps, and then switch the weight to the left hand for another set kneeling on the
right knee. Perform three sets with each arm. Isometric presses allow you to stretch, work and pose at the same time! Standing, curl the right arm to a 90-degree angle, then grasp the wrist with the left hand. Press down with the left hand while the right hand pushes up, feeling the biceps contract. Hold for 20 seconds, then release. Perform five repetitions then swap arms. Biceps are fun to work because as the smallest muscle group of the anterior upper body, they are naturally going to show results easier and quickly. Always pay attention to form and don’t overdo the amount of weight. For more workout tips contact TrainerTomB@aol.com. Contact Tom (954) 557-1119 today to set up a free consultation! along with chest. I don’t work back and biceps on the same day because when you work back really hard you are already blasting biceps pretty well. The front barbell curl is perfect for taking the biceps through their full range of motion. Stand grasping a barbell or EZ curl bar palms up in front of the thighs. Proceed to curl the bar up until the biceps meet your forearms. Pause, squeeze the positive upper contraction extra hard, then lower in a slow deliberate manner to starting position to get the benefit of the negative phase of the movement. Perform 3 sets of eight to twelve repetitions. Make sure to stretch your biceps between each set. Stretching between sets during any weight training session will aid recovery and speed growth by bringing extra blood to tired stressed muscle fibers. Standing dumbbell curls are great for exercising each bicep separately. Stand grasp-

hether your body type is long and lean (like a swimmer) or thick and compact (like a muscle bear), you’ve got to admit that a great set of guns (arms) will capture just about everyone’s attention. Now that summertime is upon us, it’s time to flex with the best of them. This week, let’s devote a little time to strengthening and building biceps, the front of the upper arms. Some muscle groups such as back and chest need to be exercised with many movements; some others with a few. For building biceps, the curl is just about the only exercise you can do, and it’s all you really need for mounds of upper-arm power. The four exercises I refer to this week comprise a thorough biceps workout. I like to superset biceps with triceps and shoulders on the same day, twice a week, with three days rest between workouts. I also like to work biceps

THE WEEK
5/15 Iggy Azalea The ubiquitous and often criticized female rapper had a big year in 2014 with her mega-hit “Fancy.” She was also featured in Ariana Grande’s hit single “Problem,” which rose to number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 the same time “Fancy” was number one. With that, the singer joined The Beatles as the only musicians to have songs ranked number one and number two simultaneously, a fact that makes music critics around the world cry. Tonight she performs at the Amway Center. 7:30 p.m. Amway Center. 400 W. Church St. Orlando. 32801.
