Obama’s Endorsement Energizes Both Sides, Shifts Debate …and Florida Could Be A Key Battleground for Gay Marriage

By CLIFF DUNN

TALLAHASSEE – The battle lines are forming up, following President Barack Obama’s historymaking endorsement last week of same sex marriage. In an interview with ABC News that aired in part last Wednesday night and concluded the next day on “Good Morning America,” the chief executive became the first sitting president to support full marriage equality for gays and lesbians, saying, “I think same sex couples should be able to get married.” The spin doctors of both major parties immediately set about offering words of encouragement and condemnation. On Thursday, Gov. Rick Scott (R-Florida) told CNBC host Larry Kudlow that Obama’s public statement could have a strong negative impact in Florida, an impact that may be felt in his campaign for reelection and his ability to win Florida, with its large bloc of 29 electoral votes. While referring to same sex marriage as a “non-issue” in the Sunshine State, Scott, who was elected governor in 2010 after spending approximately $75 million of his own fortune in his bid for the state’s top office, said that the conservative views of most Floridians had been heard at the ballot box, and that the president should take heed. “It has already been decided,” Scott told Kudlow. “In 2008, over 60 percent of our voters passed a constitutional amendment saying there is not going to be same-sex marriage in Florida, so it’s a non-issue here. It will hurt the president here in Florida, his position.” During the 2008 presidential race, Obama won in Florida, beating his Republican opponent, Sen. John McCain, 51 to 48 percent. That margin is cause for concern as Democratic strategists weigh the numerous factors that will come into play in

deciding the outcome in swing states with large electoral vote counts, including Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Virginia, all of which swung to Obama four years ago. Other Republicans joined the chorus questioning Obama’s decision. “I think it’s going to cause an incredible discussion in the black community, because, as you know, on Sundays in the black community the most conservative people in America are in those black churches,” Rep. Allen West (R-Florida) said to ABC News last week. “I think it may have been a huge miscalculation, especially when you have 41 states that recognize marriage between one man and one woman, and you just came off an incredible loss to them. Sixty-nine percent voted [to ban same-sex marriage] in North Carolina, which is a key swing state he barely won last time,” said West said, who added that even though blacks supported the president four years ago, marriage equality was banned in both Florida and California. In 1997, the Republican-controlled Florida legislature adopted the Defense of Marriage Act and likewise banned recognition of gay marriages performed in other states. At that time, only 27 percent of American said they supported same sex marriage. In 2008, opponents of marriage equality successfully championed passage of an amendment banning it the Florida state constitution. Among the “big picture” questions being asked at water coolers and in the halls of Congress alike is what precisely motivated President Obama to announce his support for gay marriage, after more than two years of professing an ‘WHAT NOW?’ continues on Page 14 “evolving” view

Agenda, Guy Magazine Relocate Publishing Offices to North Dixie Highway WILTON MANORS – What began as an interim arrangement that turned into a two-year partnership and “living arrangement” ended on Monday as Multimedia Platforms, LLC (MMP), publisher of the Agenda and its sister publication, Guy Magazine, bade a fond farewell to its former publishing offices at 2157 Wilton Drive, to take up residence just around the bend—literally and figuratively speaking—at 2435 N. Dixie Highway, Wilton Manors. From its inauguration in 2010, MMP took up residence in half of the bay space occupied by Copy This and Planet Press. “This was going to be a temporary arrangement, with Bruce [Bogan, owner of Copy This] giving up half of his operating space to accommodate us while we built up the newspaper and entertainment magazine into what both publications have become,” according to Bobby Blair, Managing Partner and CEO of MMP, and publisher of the Agenda and Guy. “It has been such a rewarding partnership, and we were so sad to leave, but we are going to always be grateful to Bruce and Billy [Sands, Bogan’s partner] for their hospitality and for being such gracious ‘roommates’,” adds Blair. “I know it was sometimes crazy.” Bogan, who suffered a heart attack earlier this year, is expanding his successful Copy This and Planet Press operation, and needs the office space formerly occupied by the publishing offices of the Agenda and Guy Magazine, which received the 2011 “Bestie Award” for Best Publisher and the 2012 “Bestie” for Best Entertaining Magazine (the Besties are hosted annually on Academy Awards night at The Manor Restaurant and Nightclub Complex and are awarded based upon the results of online community voting via social media). On Monday, May 14, 2012, the sister publications formally took possession of their new publishing offices, located within the Sterling Accounting and Tax Services suites, just south of Five Points on Dixie Highway’s antique row. “We are absolutely delighted to welcome the Agenda and Guy to our suites,” says Jeff Sterling, president and owner of Sterling Accounting. A three-day move supervised by project manager Silas Thebert, MMP’s online administrator, was undertaken over an event-filled Mother’s Day weekend, one that incurred no disruption to operations or publication schedule for either weekly print platform. “Mission accomplished,” said Thebert with a wink. “We loved our experience on Wilton Drive and are equally excited and honored to be welcomed as we have been on the Dixie Highway side of town,” notes Blair. “This part of Wilton Manors and Greater Fort Lauderdale is undergoing a Renaissance, and with the offices of SFGN across the street, we are building our own version of London’s Fleet Street,” he joked, referring to the historic former location of Britain’s major newspapers.

Central Florida African American Evangelicals Embrace Obama, Condemn Marriage Equality ORLANDO – The endorsement last week by President Barack Obama of same-sex marriage places both the president and the state’s African American pastors in a position similar to a spinster sister at her younger daughter’s wedding. Although many want to remain supporters of the nation’s—and the industrialized world’s—first African-American chief of state, they find themselves in strong opposition to his public policy stance concerning marriage equality.

FLORIDAAGENDA.COM

Pastor Beverly Brown of Redeeming Light Center in Eatonville—located about a half-dozen miles north of Orlando—told the Orlando Sentinel, “For me as an African American pastor, I’m disappointed. I’m trying to separate his personal view from his political view.” Brown’s support for Obama is separated by the thin wall of his personal support for gay marriage and the possibility that he will press for legalization of it and a reversal of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). “I think it can be a game-changer,” offered Rev. Paul Wright, pastor of Calvary Temple of Praise in Sanford, the seat of Seminole County, which includes Kissimmee. “I think it is going to cause him to lose some support from the faith-based community because of the conviction of a large number of faith-based institutions that this is an immoral act.” The result, predicts Wright, is that many African-American members of those congregations who flocked to the polls in droves to support Obama in 2008 may stay home—or vote for the presumptive GOP nominee, Mitt Romney. Some suggest that Wright reflects the majority position of African American evangelical ministers, while others think that the backlash is a momentary reaction that will not significantly impact voter turnout among blacks. “I believe the vast majority of African Americans will support the president,” Rev. Randolph Bracy Jr., the senior pastor of New Covenant Baptist Church of Orlando, told the Orlando Sentinel. “When all is said and done, African Americans will not abandon the president for Mitt Romney and the Republican Party.” And, Bracy argues, demographics are destiny. “I think things are changing whether I embrace it or not. Who am I to say these are not children of God? Who am I to stand in judgment?”

FDA-Approved Patient Labeling Patient Information COMPLERA® (kom-PLEH-rah) (emtricitabine, rilpivirine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) Tablets

COMPLERA may help: • Reduce the amount of HIV in your blood. This is called your “viral load”. • Increase the number of white blood cells called CD4+ (T) cells that help fight off other infections.

Important: Ask your doctor or pharmacist about medicines that should not be taken with COMPLERA. For more information, see the section “What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking COMPLERA?”

Reducing the amount of HIV and increasing the CD4+ (T) cell count may improve your immune system. This may reduce your risk of death or infections that can happen when your immune system is weak (opportunistic infections).

Read this Patient Information before you start taking COMPLERA and each time you get a refill. There may be new information. This information does not take the place of talking to your healthcare provider about your medical condition or treatment. What is the most important information I should know about COMPLERA? COMPLERA can cause serious side effects, including: 1. Build-up of an acid in your blood (lactic acidosis). Lactic acidosis can happen in some people who take COMPLERA or similar (nucleoside analogs) medicines. Lactic acidosis is a serious medical emergency that can lead to death. Lactic acidosis can be hard to identify early, because the symptoms could seem like symptoms of other health problems. Call your healthcare provider right away if you get any of the following symptoms which could be signs of lactic acidosis: • feeling very weak or tired • have unusual (not normal) muscle pain • have trouble breathing • have stomach pain with - nausea (feel sick to your stomach) - vomiting • feel cold, especially in your arms and legs • feel dizzy or lightheaded • have a fast or irregular heartbeat 2. Severe liver problems. Severe liver problems can happen in people who take COMPLERA or similar medicines. In some cases these liver problems can lead to death. Your liver may become large (hepatomegaly) and you may develop fat in your liver (steatosis) when you take COMPLERA. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of the following symptoms of liver problems: • your skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow (jaundice). • dark “tea-colored” urine • light-colored bowel movements (stools) • loss of appetite for several days or longer • nausea • stomach pain You may be more likely to get lactic acidosis or severe liver problems if you are female, very overweight (obese), or have been taking COMPLERA or a similar medicine containing nucleoside analogs for a long time. 3. Worsening of Hepatitis B infection. If you also have hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and you stop taking COMPLERA, your HBV infection may become worse (flare-up). A “flare-up” is when your HBV infection suddenly returns in a worse way than before. COMPLERA is not approved for the treatment of HBV, so you must discuss your HBV therapy with your healthcare provider. • Do not let your COMPLERA run out. Refill your prescription or talk to your healthcare provider before your COMPLERA is all gone. • Do not stop taking COMPLERA without first talking to your healthcare provider. • If you stop taking COMPLERA, your healthcare provider will need to check your health often and do regular blood tests to check your HBV infection. Tell your healthcare provider about any new or unusual symptoms you may have after you stop taking COMPLERA. What is COMPLERA? COMPLERA is a prescription HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) medicine that: • is used to treat HIV-1 in adults who have never taken HIV medicines before. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). • contains 3 medicines, (rilpivirine, emtricitabine, tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) combined in one tablet. EMTRIVA and VIREAD are HIV-1 (human immunodeficiency virus) nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) and EDURANT is an HIV-1 non-nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI). It is not known if COMPLERA is safe and effective in children under the age of 18 years.

Romney Apologizes for Half-Century Old School Bullying Incident

The incident in question took place in 1965, when Romney, then a senior at Cranbrook School, a Michigan preparatory academy for the children of the privileged (at that time, Romney’s father, George, was Governor of Michigan), returned to school after a break from classes and learned that a classmate, John Lauber, had dyed his hair blond. Romney, a popular student, was manager of the school’s ice hockey team and a member of the academy pep squad.

Campaign Contributions Rack Up after Obama Endorsement for Gay Marriage WASHINGTON, DC - President Obama’s reelection campaign reports an upsurge in political donations following his announcement in

support of marriage equality. Campaign officials report that within minutes of last week’s endorsement, which the chief executive made during an interview with ABC News reporter Robin Roberts that aired in part on last Wednesday and was broadcast in full the following morning on “Good Morning America.” “I am just so happy,” said openly gay Obama campaign Finance Director Rufus Gifford, in a fundraising message. “If you’re proud of our president, this is a great time to make a donation to the campaign.” Although the campaign won’t comment on the exact dollar amounts involved, an individual close to the process was quoted as saying the response was “astounding.” Both campaign officials and Democratic Party fundraisers say

obama: money in the bank

that many contributors have given the maximum allowable under election laws to both organizations. Federal statutes permit an individual to contribute up to $5,000 to the Obama reelection effort, and $30,800 to the Democratic National Committee (DNC), in addition to be donations they can make to individual state campaign efforts for the president. “Here I thought the LGBT community was already knocking it out of the ballpark for Obama, and now I see they’ve expanded the ballpark,” said openly gay DNC Treasurer Andrew Tobias. “And many of my straight donors are

energized as well. People are excited up and down the line.” Both the president’s reelection bid and that of his presumptive challenger, Republican Mitt Romney, are focusing intense energies on building their competing campaign war chests. Last Thursday, both Obama and the former Massachusetts governor attended major fundraising events, with the Romney campaign reportedly pulling in $800,000 at a Nebraska event. The president attended a $40,000-aplate dinner at the home of George Clooney in Los Angeles, which sources say could rake in as much as $16 million between in-person and online contributions. The refocused debate over marriage equality could also benefit Romney’s campaign, with donations from social and religious conservatives who support the preservation of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), and who likewise would support a constitutional amendment that would define marriage as between a man and woman. The candidate himself seemed to throw water on the idea of campaigning negatively on gay marriage, which might reflect the political realities of trying not to alienate moderate and independent voters who may support same sex marriage. Appearing last Thursday on Fox News Channel, the presumptive Republican contender said, “I don’t think the matter of marriage is really a fundraising matter either for the president and it certainly is not for me.” H

P

resident Obama’s historic words last week announcing his support of full marriage equality for gay Americans was as simple as it was foundational: “I think same sex couples should be able to get married.” The full scope and impact of this fairly straightforward executive opinion have yet to be measured, but I have serious reason to think it will be somewhat similar to the society-shaking influence of—with apologies to the intolerant extreme of the religious right—Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery (I purposely chose that one, but it could easily have been any one of the Ten Greatest Hits). With Obama’s offhand comment— spoken to an interviewer as one might say to a child “It’s wrong to lie”— he weaved presidential magic into the complex legerdemain of the gay partnerships in modern America. The Presidential Seal “of approval” (pun intended) brings with it the force and impact of a body blow, megatonstyle, with an aura that encompasses all the majesty and dignity of the Republic within a single man. No king for us, insisted Washington and the other dead (and mostly straight, I’m guessing—but who knows?) white males who framed the Great Experiment in their own images, imperfect and cantankerous demigods though they may have been. Instead of a monarch for the new nation, executive function and power were

endowed in a presidency (such a magnitude of power, in fact, that political scientists are divided to the present day as to the wisdom of using the American Presidency as a blueprint for modern executive branches of government elsewhere), and that office would, through tumultuous centuries, be secularly anointed with the pomp, pageantry, and potency of a priestking, celebrity icon, and national dad all rolled into one. Make no mistake. The office endows a negative-charisma in many, if not most, of its historic occupants (although like all nations, we do love our scoundrels: FDR, JFK, and Bill Clinton all possessed a “forgivable” quality that drove their enemies to apoplexy). But even for those Commanders-in-Chief whom We The People have come to hate through the years—Nixon, Bush-43, Hoover, Grant, Buchanan, LBJ, and Truman, at least during his time in office—that hatred was almost invariably accompanied by a recognition that his office commanded a mystique and awe that even the most blowhard opposition politician has crumbled under in even the briefest visit to the Oval Office. Obama’s isn’t merely the opinion of a talking head. Neither Rush Limbaugh, nor Howard Stern, nor Sean Hannity can command the grandeur, gravitas, might, majesty, and moral high ground—to say nothing of the 82nd Airborne Division— that emanates from the presidency. Obama was conjuring the shades of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Roosevelt (both of them), Truman, and Reagan when he placed the moral authority of his office squarely on the side of equality and justice for every American. In doing so, he potentially jeopardized his electoral relationship with his African American constituency (although I’m betting otherwise). No other prominent American leader could take such a calculated risk. You talk about only Nixon being qualified to go to China. Why should this be such a cause for sleepless nights among the enemies of equality? Consider. When the chief

FLORIDAAGENDA.COM

executive says “I think” this or that, he may indeed be voicing the opinion of a private citizen. On the other hand, when the Queen of England says “We are not amused,” she is speaking AS “we”—the entire United Kingdom, even those among her subjects who think she should be replaced by a Word Document containing a legible constitution. Which one, though, do you think gets their morning paper delivered faster? Lincoln’s 1860s opposition to southern secession was admired, but considered mostly window dressing, since there was no constitutional framework for a president telling rebellious states that they couldn’t abscond from the Union (to say nothing of suspending habeas corpus, which still gives constitutional constructionists the shakes). FDR’s “welfare state” efforts in the 1930s during the desperate days of the Great Depression were met with hostility and accusations of “socialism” and “tyranny” (sound familiar?), because most Americans feared an activist government. But how many 70-year-old conservative senior citizens today are indignantly refusing their Social Security checks? Truman’s Missouri origins and political machine past made him an unlikely Commanderin-Chief to implement racial integration of the armed services, but “Give ‘em Hell” Harry knew the difference between right and wrong, and he acted accordingly. In the 1990s, Bill Clinton was tagged by some in the media as America’s “first Black president” because of his reputed simpatico with the cause of racial justice, and for his close ties with African American leaders. This week, the cover of Newsweek featured an image of Obama with the welldeserved and hard-won caption “The First Gay President.” Although accusations of an “Imperial Presidency” may be leveled at him by his political enemies, under the circumstances—and certainly to most of his LGBT supporters—only the flexing of the Imperial Presidency’s muscles can deliver liberty and justice for all of us. ‘WHAT NOW?’ continued from Page 1

on the topic? The appearance of Vice President Joe Biden days earlier in an interview in which he offered his own support for same sex marriage is seen by many as a happy (or unfortunate, depending on your point of view) unguarded moment on Biden’s part that “forced” Obama’s hand in making his own endorsement. A new CBS News/New York Times survey shows that 67 percent believe that the president made his policy shift “mostly for political reasons,” and 24 percent say he did it “mostly because he thinks it is right.” The poll also shows that Americans’ ideas of fairness and equality have shifted, but remain complicated. According to the survey, 38 percent of Americans favor full marriage equality rights for gays, while 24 percent support civil unions that include many of the rights and privileges of formal marriage. A full third—33 percent—of Americans are against any kind of legal recognition. That number jumped when civil unions were dropped as an option, with 51 percent opposing same sex marriage and 42 percent supporting it. Another important factor in the marriage equality debate is the growing number of Americans who admit to knowing or being friends with a gay or lesbian individual. In 2003, a CBS

FLORIDAAGENDA.COM

News/New York Times poll found that 44 percent had a coworker, friend, or family member who was gay. That number jumped to 69 percent in the new survey, with those individuals who know a gay person more likely to favor marriage equality. Last month, the CBS News/ New York Times poll found Obama and Romney tied, with 46 percent supporting each man. The most recent survey shows a slight edge for Romney over Obama—46 to 43 percent, with a margin of sampling error of plus or minus four percentage points, meaning the race remains a statistical dead heat. The president’s vulnerability remains in spite of increased optimism about the economy. This may explain, at least in part, his shifting the debate away from “daddy” issues—those which relate to the economy, national security, and other policy matters where Republicans tend to hold sway among voters—toward “mommy” issues, which swing voters to Democrats, and which include social policy and spending, healthcare topics—and LGBT rights. By changing the conversation from those issues which are contentious for the president—jobs, the still-anemic economy, and the continuing distrust for Wall Street—to those which have the support of moderates and

independents, Obama may be able to influence the dynamics which have thus far shaped the presidential race, and the way his countrymen perceive him. Among those Americans who may perceive the president in the most critical light are social and religious conservatives. The president, who has professed his religious faith many times, must now convince religious voters, many who are divided over marriage equality, that his views on gay marriage don’t represent an attack on religious liberties or the freedom of churches to refuse to perform services that run contrary to their core beliefs. “We’re both practicing Christians,” Obama said during the interview, referring to his wife and himself. “And obviously this position may be considered to put us at odds with the views of others.” In recognition of that important base of the electorate, shortly after declaring support for marriage equality, Obama placed a conference call to more than a half dozen African American ministers to explain his announcement and defend its consequences. The pastors represent one of the most divided constituencies the president has: black Americans who overwhelmingly support Obama while at the same time opposing marriage equality rights for gays.

According to the Rev. Delman Coates, a pastor who was on the conference call, the chief executive told the ministers that his decision had been a struggle of conscience, but that he believed he had made the right one. Most of the participating pastors agreed to “work aggressively” for the president’s reelection, but not all of them. “They were wrestling with their ability to get over his theological position,” said Coates, pastor of Mt. Ennon Baptist Church in Clinton, Maryland. “Gay marriage is contrary to their understanding of Scripture.” Rev. Joel C. Hunter, the pastor of Northland, a conservative mega-church based in Central Florida, also spoke with the president on the phone after the ABC interview. “Some of the faith communities are going to be afraid that this is an attack against religious liberty,” Hunter told the president. “Absolutely not,” the president assured Hunter, who was elected President of the Christian Coalition in 2006, and who delivered a blessing for Obama in 2009 prior to his inauguration. “That’s not where we’re going, and that’s not what I want,” the president added. Same Sex Marriage Battleground shifts By Joe Harris

President Barack Obama’s endorsement last week for marriage equality is only the most recent sign of a major shift in attitudes towards same-sex marriage more than 15 years ago, when the first indications appeared that American attitudes were changing towards gay marriage. In 1996, the year President Bill Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), barely a quarter of Americans—27 percent— said that same-sex matrimony should be legalized, a far cry from last year, when 53 percent voiced support for marriage equality. In the 2008 presidential election, Obama won 17 states which have passed laws that define marriage as the union of a man and a woman— including Colorado, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida, with a combined 82 electoral votes, nearly a third of the 270 needed to win the presidency; the Sunshine State alone bring over 10 percent of that total, with 29 electoral votes). Another 21 states have similar laws—including North Carolina, which Obama won in 2008 and which last week enshrined that law in the state constitution. Unlike the presidential election years 2004 and 2008, when several states created laws or amendments to their state constitutions that banned all but male-female marriages, the issue is not likely to define statewide races or to motivate voters to cast their ballots for one party or another because of personal bias about marriage equality. Meanwhile, the fight over DOMA continues to work its way through the federal courts. Under the law— passed by a Republican-majority Congress and signed reluctantly into law by Clinton, who faced reelection that year—no state or other U.S. political subdivision (overseas territory, possession, etc.) is required to recognize a same-sex marriage performed in another state. DOMA also codifies nonrecognition of gay marriages for federal purposes, which includes survivor benefits under Social Security, the filing of joint tax returns, as well as insurance and

other benefits for federal employees. In two Massachusetts court decisions and a California bankruptcy court ruling, Section 3 of DOMA, which deals with such matter, has been ruled unconstitutional. All three cases are currently under appeal. Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney raised the ire of LGBT advocates in February when he told attendants at the conservative CPAC convention, “When I am president,” Romney continued, “I will preserve the Defense of Marriage Act and I will fight for a federal amendment defining marriage as a relationship between one man and one woman.” Romney is toeing a difficult line, trying hard to energize the GOP’s conservative base to support him in November while still attempting the political legerdemain necessary to hold onto centrist and independent voters, who are more concerned with bread and butter issues than denying a right of citizenship to their fellow countrymen and –women. With the nod from Obama, the Democrat mandarins are rushing to voice their support for marriage equality. Although some of the party’s most eminent names—including former presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, as well as Al Gore, John Kerry, Andrew Cuomo, and Howard Dean—have previously endorsed marriage equality, some earlier holdouts have begun to sing a different tune. Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV), the Senate Majority Leader and the highestranking Latter Day Saint (Mormon) in U.S. government, said last week, “My personal belief is that marriage is between a man and a woman. But in a civil society, I believe that people should be able to marry whomever they want, and it’s no business of mine if two men or two women want to get married.” And Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-HI), the President Pro Tempore of the Senate and, under the Constitution, third in line for the presidency, announced his own support last week for same-sex marriage. H

A “Who’s Who” of local celebrities, glitterati, and business and community leaders have spent the past six weeks preparing their minds and bodies at the dance and aerobics studio at Wilton Manors’ Island City Health and Fitness, building their dance moves and athletic skills to the absolute peak of their individual performances for the main event, the proceeds from which will benefit the Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation, a not-for-profit service organization that assists financially-challenged persons living with HIV/AIDS and other lifealtering conditions, through free gym memberships, group workout sessions, and ongoing lifestyle education classes covering all facets of living a healthy, balanced lifestyle: diet, exercise, physical and emotional well-being, positive life choices, along with coaching and mentoring from licensed and trained professionals. With a format that is well-known to fans of the hit TV program “Dancing

Season Two judges include international recording star and dance diva

Pepper MaShay, whose music has been featured prominently on “Queer as Folk” and elsewhere, former “La Cage” performer and internationally-acclaimed female impersonator Marvin Nathan (“Fullsized Cher/Cousin Ira” from the CBS-TV hit “The Nanny”), and superstar entertainer and longtime local favorite, Misty Eyez. Nationally-renowned drag sensation and Florida Continental Elite champion Diva, along with singing powerhouse and former Mr. Continental Philip Alexander host the evening’s star-studded proceedings, with live special performances from the “Dreamgirls” dance ensemble— comprised of Nicole T. Brian Neal, founder of the eponymous Foundation which sponsors the evening’s entertainment, says that guests to this year’s gala fundraising night will not be disappointed. “Inasmuch as last year’s ‘Dancing with the South Florida Stars’ exceeded every possible expectation, I am very happy about the lineup of celebrity entertainers, and the cast members themselves, who have devoted a lot of time—and sweat—to making this a fun and rewarding night for everyone, especially the beneficiaries of the Foundation’s grants,” Neal said. In addition to the other benefits, recipients of grants also receive an online training program to document their journey to healthy living—through exercise, diet, and a good emotional outlook—as well as materials to document their ongoing success. Last year’s proceeds from “Dancing with the South Florida Stars I” totaled just over $10,000, which went to fund the not-for-profit’s ongoing mission.

The Unique Implications of Prostate Cancer for Gay Men

A

BY Arlen Leight, Ph.D.

diagnosis of prostate cancer is a frightening prospect for both men and their partners. Unfortunately, most physicians treating for prostate cancer never inform their gay patients that the implications will impact gay male sex differently than for straight male sex. The result can be uninformed, under-informed, or misinformed treatment selection. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men. One out of every six men will develop prostate cancer, as compared to one out of every eight women who will develop breast cancer. If you live to age 80, your chances are greater than 50 percent that you will develop prostate cancer. For a gay male couple, there is a 28 percent chance that one partner or the other will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lives together. If you have a father or brother who has had prostate cancer or if you are African American, your risk doubles. Diagnosis is always confirmed by biopsy, but PSA blood tests and digital rectal examinations are used for initial screening. These are generally recommended for men over 50 (or over 40 if in a high risk group). If you take Propecia for hair loss or Proscar for prostate enlargement, your PSA may be falsely low. You want to double the number for accuracy. And gay-receptive partners should wait three days after anal penetration, as prostate massage can elevate the PSA. Your physician should perform a digital exam AFTER he or she takes your blood. The most commonly prescribed treatment after a diagnosis of prostate cancer is prostatectomy, or removal of the prostate. This is major surgery with the potential for major residual, life altering implications. While considered the “gold standard” for curing prostate cancer, five to 10 percent of men remain incontinent, and for men under 60, 25 to 30 percent remain impotent. For men over 70, 70 to 80 percent remain impotent. And sexual function tends to improve with time. Erectile rigidity post-treatment may

be sufficient for vaginal penetration, but often isn’t sufficient for anal penetration. There are erectile treatments available that can help or even restore function, so consult your urologist for assistance in this regard. The other major change in sexual function is that ejaculation will now be retrograde (so the ejaculate will back up the urethra rather than forge out the penis). This can be disturbing, but men are still able to ejaculate even if they cannot attain a significant erection. The other curative option that is generally recommended is radiation therapy. With radiation, less than two percent remain incontinent. Recurrence of cancer is three to 40 percent higher than with prostatectomy (depending upon the stage of the cancer). There is a risk of frequent urination, burning, and chronic bowel complications. Rectal bleeding is a problem in around five percent of brachytherapy (radiation) patients. Because radiation has long term effects, sexual function may not be impaired at first, but may decrease over time. The rates of impotence are approximately the same as for surgery. There may likewise be penile shrinkage, and a decreased amount of ejaculate. Radiation can be problematic for men who enjoy being penetrated. Anal bleeding, diarrhea, and tightening and/ or spasm of the sphincter may make anal penetration uncomfortable or impossible. Psychologically, an overall sense of helplessness, anger, loss/grief, depression, and anxiety are very common. Communication with partners about fears, embarrassment, and frustrations are critical. Patience is vital for the man with prostate cancer—and his partner—as recovery is often slow and uncertain. H

Are You Eating Your Way to Prostate Problems?

Stuffed tomatoes By JEAN DOHERTY

T

hIt is sometimes claimed that the ancient Romans, as well as medieval cooks, stuffed animals with other animals. An anonymous Andalusian cookbook from the 13th century includes a recipe for a ram stuffed with small birds; and a similar recipe for a camel stuffed with sheep stuffed with bustards stuffed with carp stuffed with eggs … ! British celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall has championed the ten-bird roast, calling it “one of the most spectacular and delicious roasts you can lay before your loved ones at Yuletide”. A large turkey is stuffed with a goose, duck, mallard, guinea fowl, chicken, pheasant, partridge, pigeon and woodcock. The roast feeds around 30 people and, in addition to the ten birds, it also includes stuffing made from two pounds of sausage meat and half a pound of streaky bacon, sage, port and red wine! Today I’m keeping it simple … we’ll just use a pound of meat and some tomatoes

• 6 big ripe beef tomatoes (or 3 and 3 green bell peppers ) • 1/2 pound Italian pork sausage meat • 1/2 pound lean ground beef • 3 garlic cloves, minced • 1/2 cup parsley, finely chopped • 1/4 cup thinly sliced basil • Salt and freshly ground pepper • 5 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

Preheat the oven to 325°. Cut across the tomatoes horizontally, leaving the top half slighter smaller than the bottom to create a lid. Set a strainer over a medium bowl. Scoop the tomato seeds into the strainer; press on the seeds to extract the juice. Using a small spoon or melon baller, scoop out the center of the tomatoes and coarsely chop them. Add the chopped centers to the juice in the bowl. Add the sausage, beef, garlic, parsley, basil, salt, pepper and 2-1/2 tablespoons of the olive oil and knead to combine. Set the tomatoes in a large baking dish and season with salt. Spoon the filling into the tomatoes, cover with the lids and drizzle with the remaining 2 1/2 tablespoons of olive oil. Bake for about 1 1/2 hours, basting occasionally, until the tomatoes are soft. You are the chef!

Although born in Dublin, Ireland, chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

10 Foods to Avoid for Prostate Health

W

Byandy kress

hen it comes to men, the prostate is a very important organ to maintain for a lifetime. Unfortunately, this delicate walnut-sized organ enlarges as we age resulting in a condition called benign prostatic hypertrophy or BPH. This overgrowth rarely produces symptoms before the age of 40, but more than half of the men in their sixties, and up to 90% of men in their seventies and eighties experience symptoms, including the need to urinate overnight, increased urgency or weak or low stream. Cancers and malignancies are also common in this organ, with up to 320,000 new prostate cancer cases a year. Most of these cases could have been prevented by a healthier diet. Whether in the kitchen or out on the town, wiser choices can save you--and your prostate. The number one food that attacks your prostrate is the number one choice for protein when it comes to Americans. That’s right, red meat. Red meats and processed meats can increase cancerous growths in the prostrate 12 to 33 percent. Studies suggest that the culprit is the level of fat in red meat as well as the carcinogens activated during the cooking process. Number two is eating nonorganic meats. These are meats that contain hormones, antibiotics and steroids, as well as other choice things animals should not be fed—but are. This includes corn, soybeans and other non-organic grains used to”fatten” them up for slaughter. Overeating dairy products is number three on our list. Too many dairy products are high in fat and cholesterol, with some containing leftover hormones from those “juiced up” dairy cows. High intake of calcium through supplements or dairy products has been linked to prostate cancer by the American Heart Association or AHA. Number four is canned tomatoes. Farm fresh tomatoes contain lycopene which aids prostrate health. Canned tomatoes, on the other hand, can contain

bisphenol-A or BPA, a synthetic estrogen, from the resin lining of the can. In fifth place is microwave popcorn. The lining of microwavable popcorn bags contain carcinogenic chemicals, as well as perfluoroctanonic acid(PFOA), which is associated with human infertility. Non-organic potatoes should be avoided as well. While potatoes are healthy vegetables, the non-organic variety can contain poisons, herbicides and pesticides that are absorbed from the ground in which they are grown. You cannot wash off the chemicals that have been leached into the skin of the potato. In seventh place are two of America’s favorites: french fries and potato chips. These potato products contain saturated fat content. Additionally, when fries and chips are cooked, the acrylamide content becomes a carcinogen. Number eight is artificial sweeteners, such as aspartame, neotame, cyclamate, sucralose and saccharin. These ingredients can already be found in a wide variety of foods you may already be eating, especially if you are on a diabetic diet. The key is to element the quantity of these non-calorie sugar replacements. Farmed salmon come in at number nine, for while the salmon itself is healthy, the fish feed they are given is loaded with antibiotics and other contaminants, lowering the omega-3 fatty acids and upping the contaminants. Number ten on our list is sugar, so prevalent in many American foods and beverages. Over consumption of sugar not only adds extra calories, packing on pounds and the potential of diabetes, it can fuel prostate cancer growth. While the number one killer of men is still heart disease, eating a prostate-wise diet will benefit your entire body and add years to your sex life as well.
