Caitlyn Jenner’s Come Out to Play NEW YORK (AP) - Bruce Jenner’s transition is complete. “Call me Caitlyn,” declares a headline on the July cover of Vanity Fair, with a photo of a long-haired Jenner in a strapless corset, legs crossed, sitting on a stool. The image was shot by famed celeb photographer Annie Leibovitz. Inside, more images depict Caitlyn in gold lame, a black bustier and a cleavage-baring, offthe-shoulder gown. Caitlyn Jenner also debuted a new Twitter account with: “I’m so happy after such a long struggle to be living my true self. Welcome to the world Caitlyn. Can’t wait for you to get to know her/ me.” In about three hours, the account had more than 860,000 followers. According to the magazine, which took to Twitter with the cover Monday, Jenner spoke emotionally about her gender journey: “If I was lying on my deathbed and I had kept this secret and never ever did anything about it, I would be lying there saying, ‘You just blew your entire life.’” The cover photo was shot at Jenner’s Malibu, California, home and comes on the heels of her twohour ABC interview with Diane Sawyer in which Bruce Jenner confirmed the transition. The muchanticipated “20/20” interview on April 24 was watched by more than 17.1 million viewers. Prior to the unveiling of Cait-

lyn, Jenner had said he preferred the pronoun “he,” but Vanity Fair contributing editor Buzz Bissinger, who wrote the story, refers to “she.” The Olympian who married and divorced reality show “momager” Kris Jenner has appeared for years on “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” Jenner’s own still-untitled docuseries chronicling her transition is scheduled for the same network, E!, beginning July 26. In addition to the va-va voom corset cover, Vanity Fair released a black-and-white video on the making of the cover “Caitlyn doesn’t have any secrets,” Jenner narrates. “As soon as the Vanity Fair cover comes out, I’m free.” Bissinger, the “Friday Night Lights” Pulitzer Prize winner, said in the lengthy magazine story that he had unfettered access to Jenner, both before her transition and after. His approach to Jenner’s life is exhaustive, based on interviews with several of her biological children, her mother, her former wives and others. The story describes Jenner’s painful recovery from “facial-feminization” surgery in March, a grueling 10-hour procedure that had her briefly second-guessing her decision during a panic attack eased in part with the help of a Los Angeles Gender Center counselor who made a house call. There was also a breastaugmentation procedure. Now, Bissinger reports, the 65-year-old Jenner is “immensely happy, relaxed, with a shiny sense of purpose and confidence.” He added:

“She can’t wait when she goes out now to tell the paparazzi to ‘make sure it’s a good shot.’” Of the upcoming reality series, Jenner is already prepared with a response over criticism that she’s doing it for a paycheck: “I’m not doing it for money. I’m doing it to help my soul and help other people. If I can make a dollar, I certainly am not stupid. (I have) house payments and all that kind of stuff. I will never make an excuse for something like that. Yeah, this is a business.” Jenner said she is aware of the appalling conditions in which many of the 700,000 transgender men and women live in the U.S. and plans to shed light in the E! show on such issues as suicide and attempted suicide within the community. She also plans a segment in which she sees if she can still hit a golf ball 300 yards off the tee with her new physical attributes. A road trip is also planned for Jenner and several transgender women to travel from Los Angeles to San Francisco to visit a center for transgender youth. On July 15, Jenner plans her first major public appearance. She will be given the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at ESPN’s ESPYs in Los Angeles. Past winners include Muhammad Ali, Nelson Mandela and Billie Jean King. Among big names to reach out on Twitter in support of Jenner’s big reveal were some of his children, LGBT advocates and Valerie Jarrett, senior adviser to President Barak Obama. “Nice to meet you, @Caitlyn_ Jenner,” Jarrett tweeted (and was re-tweeted by the White House). “The brave choice to live as your authentic self is a powerful example to so many.”

Connecticut Lawmakers Make It Easier to Change Birth Certificates

HARTFORD, CT (AP) - The Connecticut legislature is sending a bill to Gov. Dannel P. Malloy that makes it easier for transgender people to update their names and gender on their birth certificates. On Monday, the Senate voted 32-3 in favor of the bill that would allow any person who has undergone surgi-

cal, hormonal or other clinically appropriate treatment for gender transition to change their sex on their birth certificate. Regulations now only allow people to change the designation after completing gender reassignment surgery. Stephen Glassman, executive director of ACLU of Connecticut, said the legislation “modernizes our outdated laws and makes Connecticut a national leader once again in an evolving understanding of transgender rights.” Advocates say the course of care for transgender people does not always involve surgery. The bill previously passed the House.

New York Women’s College Works Toward A New Policy On Transgender Admissions

NEW YORK (AP) - On a recent bright spring morning, students admitted to the Barnard College Class of 2019 gathered on campus. As blue-and-white balloons fluttered in the breeze, the prospective freshmen attended panels and lunched on the lawn, chatting animatedly with current students. There were, of course, young women from a variety of backgrounds, but at least one category wasn’t included: transgender women. Barnard, like other women’s colleges, has traditionally admitted only students born female. But that might be changing. Next week, Barnard’s trustees are expected to vote on an issue that has arrived loudly and emphatically on the front burner for women’s colleges across the nation: transgender admissions. One by one, schools have announced policies in the past year that address, as never before, the fluidity of gender. Why the sudden action? “I think certain issues just hit the zeitgeist at a certain point in time,” says Debora Spar, Barnard’s president, who’s led a months long effort to explore the issue with her community, including five town halls and a survey that yielded some 900 responses - all of which she says she’s personally read. “History is moving very quickly on this issue.”

N. Carolina Governor Vetoes Religious Objection Bill On Gay Marriage

that all North Carolinians deserve equal access to state services under the law,” group executive director Chris Sgro said. The group’s allies included Democrats, who said during impassioned House debate this week the exemption amounted to discrimination that reminded them of racial bias incorporated into laws from the Jim Crow era. Bill supporters argue government employees should be allowed religious accommodation if marrying same-sex couples runs counter to their beliefs. The bill “strikes an appropriate balance,” Moore and Berger said. The Christian conservative North Carolina Values Coalition said the bill protects religious freedom. “It is unacceptable for any governor who calls himself ‘conservative’ to veto” such legislation, coalition spokeswoman Jessica Wood said. The measure was filed when several magistrates resigned shortly after federal judges last October struck down North Carolina’s 2012 constitutional amendment prohibiting gay marriage. The state’s top court administrator said at the time magistrates who declined to officiate for same-sex couples could be punished, terminated or face potential criminal charges. Utah is the only state that’s approved a similar exemption, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Utah’s governor signed that bill. The veto is McCrory’s fourth since taking office in early 2013. The legislature overrode two of the first three.

“sincerely held religious objection.” McCrory said in a written statement that “for many North Carolinians, including myself, opinions on same-sex marriage come from sincerely held religious beliefs that marriage is between a man and a woman.” But, he added, “we are a nation and a state of laws.” “No public official who voluntarily swears to support and defend the Constitution and to discharge all duties of their office should be exempt from upholding that oath,” McCrory said. McCrory vetoed the bill a halfhour after his public statement, spokesman Josh Ellis said. The bill now returns to the legislature. To enact the law over McCrory’s objections, at least three-fifths of the lawmakers voting in each chamber must support an override. The House and Senate already passed the bill by margins above the threshold, although the House 67-43 vote on May 28 was barely above it. Ten House members had excused absences and didn’t vote. Senate leader Phil Berger, R-Rockingham, who introduced the bill, and House Speaker Tim Moore, R-Cleveland, didn’t address a possible override in a joint statement. They said they “respect but disagree with the governor’s decision.” Gay rights group Equality North Carolina praised the veto and urged lawmakers to keep the veto in place. “Both actions will send a strong message that no public official is exempt from the constitution they themselves have sworn to uphold and

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory vetoed May 28 a religious exemption bill that would allow some court officials to avoid gay marriage duties. His decision, announced hours after lawmakers gave final approval to the measure, puts him at odds with social conservatives in his Republican Party and GOP legislative leaders spearheading the legislation. Now the General Assembly must decide whether to override that veto and enact the bill, which gives magistrates and some register of deeds workers the ability to avoid duties for all marriages if they have a

when you come down to it, that divide affects how you see the issue of transgender admissions.” “We really want to do the right thing,” Spar says. “We just have to figure out what the right thing is.” “WE DON’T WANT TO BE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF HISTORY” Caleb LoSchiavo, 22, a graduating senior, was born female but, upon arrival at Barnard, began a gradual transition. An Italian and psychology major, Caleb changed names legally last year. “I arrived here and realized that I wasn’t female,” Caleb says. “I didn’t fit into this idea of womanhood.” Caleb, who identifies as neither male nor female but “gender fluid,” has been active in transgender issues on campus, and senses that Barnard is ready to admit transgender students: “It would look really regressive and behind the times to say ‘no.’ We don’t want to be on the wrong side of history.” But how to define the policy? Caleb thinks Barnard should admit anyone except those who identify as male. That would exclude trans men. “If you KNOW you’re a man, then a women’s college is not your place,” Caleb says. “Men have male privilege, that’s a fact. If people see you as a man, you’re going to be treated with more respect. Men don’t need to be at a women’s college to see themselves reflected in leadership. They can look at the entire history of our nation.”

Popular culture, too. “Transgender issues have been accelerating in the culture,” says Jennifer Finney Boylan, an English professor at Barnard and herself a trans woman. She points to several recent influential events: Actress Laverne Cox appearing on a Time magazine cover touting “The Transgender Tipping Point.” The Golden Globe-winning TV show “Transparent,” about a trans woman. And, more recently, Bruce Jenner’s transition. “These issues are changing the game,” says Boylan. “It might seem like it’s all happening at once, but why didn’t it happen sooner? I’m delighted that all of these colleges are trying to figure it out.” But figuring it out is a complex process, and colleges have arrived at differing (and often lengthy) policies. The most recent: Smith College, which decided in early May to admit transgender women but not transgender men (assigned female at birth but identifying as male). Mount Holyoke, on the other hand, has decided to admit both. “We acknowledge that gender identity is not reducible to the body,” said the school’s president, Lynn Pasquerella, in September. Barnard, now, will have to determine where to draw the line. “There’s no one right answer,” says Dru Levasseur, director of Lambda Legal’s Transgender Rights Project. “It’s a complex issue, and it reflects the complexity of gender.” To those who might argue that the issue affects only a tiny group of people, Levasseur replies that it’s hugely symbolic. “It really gets to the heart of who qualifies as a woman, and who qualifies as a man,” Levasseur says. “Which makes it so relevant right now.” Ahead of the decision, The Associated Press sampled some views across the community. “WE WANT TO DO THE RIGHT THING” Spar, the Barnard president, says the issue is hardly brand new; she’s been thinking about transgender admissions since she took her position in 2008. After listening to various views, she feels it boils down to “a split in how people defined what a women’s college is.” “For part of the community, that mission is defined as educating women,” Spar says. “For another part, it’s about providing a space for gender-oppressed minorities. Key West Gets Rainbow-Colored Crosswalks As Five-Day Pride Fest Begins

KEY WEST (AP)– Key West’s famed Duval Street will become even more colorful with new rainbowcolored crosswalks. The crosswalks will be painted this week at the intersection of Duval and Petronia streets, just a couple blocks away from American author Ernest Hemingway’s Key West home. The $4,000 project will officially be unveiled June 10 for the start of the five-day Key West Pride festival. This year’s Key West Pride includes daytime pool and beach parties, late-night drag shows, on-the-water adventures ranging from snorkeling and kayaking to glass-bottom boat tours, a street fair, a 10k relay for tutu-wearing runners and walkers, and pageants to select Mr., Miss and Ms. Key West Pride. Festival events begin Wednesday afternoon, June 10, with the unveiling of a rainbow crosswalk in the heart of Key West’s LGBT entertainment district. Co-sponsored by the City of Key West and the Key West Business Guild, the rainbow crosswalk is to be imprinted permanently

on the pavement connecting all four corners of the intersection. Subsequent Pride highlights are to include the 2015 Stoli Original Cocktail Challenge’s Wednesday night kickoff gala, Friday night run-offs and Saturday night final round. The contest features regional winners from LGBT bars in 14 North American cities, all competing to create an original Key West cocktail that communicates the island’s creativity and spirit. The final round is set for 7-10 p.m. Saturday on an open-air stage in the 700 block of Duval St. Eight finalists are to concoct their libations for a judging panel that includes Broadway actor and former “Queer Eye” television personality Jai Rodriguez, Emmy Award-winning comedy writer and actor Bruce Vilanch, clothing designer Andrew Christian, actress and singer Latoya London and famed Key West female impersonator “Sushi.” The winner is to be the honorary grand marshal of the 2015 Pride Parade alongside celebrity grand marshals Rodriguez and Christian. The all-welcome procession, to feature a 100-foot section of Key West’s famed sea-to-sea rainbow flag, is set to begin at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 14, and proceed up Duval Street from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. Following the parade, the grand

MELBOURNE—At a recent meeting of the Brevard County School Board, residents urged board members to add language to school district policy that would ban discrimination against LGBT individuals. The board at its May 26 meeting decided not to take any immediate action, however, and requested more information about how any changes might impact existing policy. Current school district policy defines harassment and nondiscrimination toward employees but does not specifically mention LGBT individuals. “It is not asking for much. We’re asking for seven words added to your nondiscrimination policy,” said Scott Wall-DeSousa, a local realtor. His partner, Daniel Wall-DeSousa, a teacher from Palm Bay, added, “The policy turns a blind eye to the LGBT community. I hope that you’ll want to stand on the right side of history.” Board members asked attorney Harold Bistline several questions, including whether or not current policy covers LGBT people. Bistline assured board members that the district is in compliance with state and federal laws. “I need more information to make me want to change this. I need to know what the impacts are. What does this really mean? I guess I just don’t understand why everything isn’t already covered?” said school board member Karen Henderson. Member Misty Belford added to the topic to the school board agenda. “I feel that it’s important that you know that we are hearing you,” Belford said to the small crowd gathered to speak on the issue. Residents have come before the board four times since October. The Brevard County Commission also got a request related to gay rights recently. “We need to be forward-thinking and create equality for all in Brevard

County,” said Cynthia Sweet, a real estate agent and president of the local chapter of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians, Gays and Transgender Persons. Jessica Saggio of Florida Today contributed to this report.

Marco Rubio Compared To Anita Bryant In SAVE Email

MIAMI—Marco Rubio’s comments to a Christian network last week over same-sex marriage made it onto an email fund-raising pitch from SAVE, the Florida gay-rights advocacy group. The email, which SAVE sent supporters late last week, compared Rubio to Anita Bryant, the one-time singer and beauty pageant queen who became the most-high profile opponent to MiamiDade County’s human-rights law in the late 1970s. “If Senator Rubio wants to be president in 2016, he should know that Floridians won’t support anti-LGBT attacks at the ballot box -- just ask fellow equality opponent and Floridian celebrity Anita Bryant, whose effort to legalize anti-gay discrimination in Miami-Dade County was overturned by voters in 2002 with SAVE’s help,” the email read. It cited Rubio’s remark that Christianity faces a “real and present danger” from rhetoric that suggests same-sex marriage opponents are prejudiced -and therefore their religion might be, too. The comment was widely mischaracterized after a liberal group inaccurately claimed Rubio had called same-sex marriage itself a danger. According to Miami Herald blogger PatriciaMazzei, SAVE didn’t get into the level of detail; it only noted Rubio’s opposition to same-sex marriage. He has said there is no constitutional right for same-sex couples to wed, though he has also said the issue should be left up to the states.

Tampa Lesbian Couple Can Get a Divorce

MIAMI--A recent survey by the University of Miami Center on Aging found that 73% of South Florida’s healthcare agencies and facilities report providing services to the LGBT community, even though less than a third offer any staff training in LGBT-related needs. Several leading national and regional organizations are teaming to launch an initiative both to provide needed LGBT training and to help LGBT elders find safe, supportive services. South Florida’s Our Fund and SAGE USA partnered with the Center on Aging to survey eldercare agencies and facilities in the Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties. The survey results indicated that, while service providers recognize the need to train employees about aging issues in general, few perceive the need to train employees about the unique issues surrounding LGBT elders. Statistics show that there may be over 43,000 LGBT older adults (65+) in the three South Florida counties covered by the survey. “This is an alarming but not surprising

statistic, and the survey confirms consistent concerns we hear from our LGBT elder population here in South Florida,” commented Anthony Timiraos, CEO/ President of Our Fund. “Many refuse to seek services because they fear discrimination or abuse by staff who do not accept their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender-nonconforming expression.” Although South Florida is fortunate to offer elder services by local LGBT organizations, including The Pride Center (Fort Lauderdale), Compass Community Center (Lake Worth) and SunServe (Fort Lauderdale), the fact remains that most LGBT elders in need of more extensive social services, home care, assisted living or skilled nursing will rely on the very same service and care providers as everybody else. “We know from both experience and research that discrimination is still a problem in many of these elder care settings, and that one of the primary reasons is the providers haven’t educated themselves,” commented Michael Adams, Executive Director at SAGE. “This survey documents that more than two thirds of providers have not taken any steps to ensure that they offer safe and welcoming services to LGBT elders. On a posi-

tive note, 83% expressed willingness to provide training to staff on LGBT issues.” A new South Florida initiative by Our Fund and SAGE USA, working with local LGBT organizations, seeks to change the landscape and ensure that any services to, or care required by, an LGBT elder happens in a welcoming and discrimination-free environment. “Harnessing the expertise of SAGE’s National Resource Center on LGBT Aging, the new POE Campaign (Protect Our Elders) will carefully select leading care and service providers in South Florida and provide them with cultural competency training that has been proven to improve the treatment of LGBT elders,” added Mr. Adams. The POE curriculum and delivery was developed by SAGE USA largely through a partnership with the U.S. Administration on Aging. Our Fund is launching a special campaign to raise resources that will subsidize training for selected service and care providers in the start-up phase of the POE Campaign. Beginning in 2016, Our Fund also expects to publish a directory of South Florida elder service and care providers who have completed staff training of, and demonstrated support for LGBT elder needs.

divorce by the 2nd District Court of Appeal, a full year after being told by a judge that such a move wasn’t possible. Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi had asked the appellate court to wait until the U.S. Supreme Court rules on same-sex marriage, which is expect sometime this month, before making a ruling. Fortunately for the couple, Keiba Lynn Shaw and Mariama Changamire Shaw, the District Court thought it unnecessary to wait. “For the reasons expressed in this court’s recent opinion in BrandonThomas v. Brandon-Thomas … we reverse and remand for further proceedings,” the order stated. The Brandon-Thomases referred to were another lesbian couple who were given the opportunity to divorce in Florida last April thanks to a ruling by the same court. In that case, one of the pair, Krista Brandon-Thomas, is contesting the divorce. In congratulating the Tampa couple, the activist group Equality Florida said: “Today, the 2nd District Court of Appeal joined the tidal wave of courts across the country who have affirmed the rights of same-sex couples to be treated equally under the law.” Hannah Willard, the group;s Central Florida field organizer, added, “As we await a ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court, we know this is one more message to the nine Justices that it is time to put an end to discrimination when it comes to marriage.” According to the Orlando Sentinel, the Shaws, who were married in Massachusetts, agreed to their divorce and settled all issues through a process known as collaborative divorce, asking the courts only to issue a legal declaration dissolving their marriage. But last year, Circuit Judge Laurel M. Lee refused, citing provisions in state law and the state Constitution banning the recognition of same-sex marriages. Lee ruled she couldn’t dissolve a marriage that doesn’t legally exist in this state. “This is a good day for equality,” attorney Adam Cordover, who represents Keiba Shaw, told the Orlando Sentinel after Friday’s ruling was announced. “Many people focus on marriage equality, but divorce equality is just as important. Now my client can move on with her life.” Cordover said the divorce should be finalized as soon as a judge signs the paperwork.

Popular Wilton Manors Bartender Death Ruled Homicide; Victim Buried at Emotion Funeral WILTON MANORS--Henry Vidal, the popular 32-year-old bartender at B. bar and Grille (formerly Bill’s), who died last Thursday, May 28, was murdered, according to new information released by the Broward County Sheriff’s office. While no cause of death has still been released, Detective Ricky Libman has been assigned the homocide case. No further details released for the active investigation Authorities ask anyone with additional information about the homicide to call Libman at 954-321-4210 or contact Broward Crime Stoppers, anonymously, at 954-493-8477 or browardcrimestoppers.org. (Crime Stoppers will pay up to $3,000 for information that leads to an arrest.) Vidal was buried on Monday with the funeral mass taking place at St. Edward Catholic Church in Pembroke Pines. Over a hundred friends, business associates and family attended the viewing which preceded the mass at Boyd-Panciera Family Funeral Care. An open casket contributed to the intensity of the emotion at the wake. Vidal was born on December 14, 1982, in Hialeah, FL, to Enrique Vidal and Caridad Labarta. In addition to his parents, Vidal is survived by his sisters, Arlyn Vidal and Adriana Labarta. Vidal’s body was discovered late in the afternoon last Thursday, and the Broward County Sheriff’s office has now confirmed that narcotics were found at the scene. According to local sources, Vidal had battled with his use of drugs for years, but had recently been making a determined effort to wean himself from its use. A neighbor of Vidal told the Agenda that Vidal’s body was discovered by his manager at B. bar when the bartender

failed to show up at work. He had apparently been dead for hours at that point. Vidal’s apartment door was unlocked, but according to Wilton Manors Police spokesperson Jennifer Bickhardt, there was no obvious signs of a struggle. Wilton Manors Police questioned the B. bar manager for hours following

his discovery. The area around Vidal’s apartment building, located at 578 NE 20 Street in Wilton Manors was cordoned off with yellow crime tape, with a large Crime Scene Investigation truck parked outside. Vidal had been in excellent spirits the morning of this passing, and had spoken to several of his friends on the telephone about his

plans for the day. Vidal’s family, who lives in Hialeah, Florida, was not notified of his death until late in the evening, hours after the fact. Vidal’s best friend, Melanie Binder was notified in Austria. In the day that has passed since Vidal’s death, there has been an outpouring of positive sentiment praising the bartender’s constant smile and indefatigable energy. Patrick J. Schrader of Wilton Manors commented: “Henry Vidal will be remembered fondly. Big heart, big smile, and not an ounce of conceit. All those things are a testament to being raised by a loving family. May they find solace in the loving memories shared by those he influenced. Rest in peace, my friend.” Aananda Yoga Teacher Karen Renee wrote: “Henry was the kindest, most gentlest human being that I have ever met. He will be missed dearly. I am blessed that I had the chance to have in my life. Daniele Santoa of Sidelines Sports & Video Bar said: “I’ve known Henry for years. He was an amazing person who always had this amazing ability to make you smile or laugh even in the most crappiest of times.” Bobby Neal Puredi, Graphic Designer for HotSpots! Magazine labeled Vidal: “A beautiful man inside and out. A true loss.” Worcester State University’s Howard Glantz added: “I met Henry fifteen years ago. I will miss his smile. He quoted the late Dr. Leo Buscaglia who said: “Death is a challenge. It tells us not to waste time… It tells us to tell each other right now that we love each other.” Robert Levey shared: “I am shocked. What an amazing person Henry is and (I) always had a great time with him. Wow, don’t know what to say other than we will very much miss you Henry.”

will always have a piece of my heart. Words can’t describe the pain I have at seeing him leave us so soon. He had a personality like no other and always wore a smile on his face. I will always remember the good times that we shared because those are the times that matter the most. I thank Henry for allowing me to see that there are amazing people like him. One of the last things Henry said to me was “Thank you for making me believe there are still people in the world where lasting memories can be mutually shared.” His Aunt Ody: Henry was a blessing to our family right from the day he was born. He was the most lovable child anyone could ever have. He was and forever will be our precious baby boy. I am sooo eternally happy he was part of us all and yet sooo painfully hurt he left us so sudden. I know he is in the heavens watching over us ( probably making jokes and laughing at the silly things we do) and waiting for us. I can’t wait to hear his stories and see him once again. Till we meet again my beloved baby boy. I love you, Oi. Employer Mark Negrete: Bill’s was his home away from home. All of his co workers were his friends. He was a gentle, kind soul who’s smile lit up the room and soft talk made you pull in to listen. I will miss him, we will miss him! Ana Descalzo - Hialeah, FL: It is so diffi-

knew Henry Vidal only in passing. I saw him flash his infectious smile at work serving drinks at the B. bar & Grille. He was energy in motion, talking and flirting and treating everyone of us at that place in time as his newest best friend. Last week Henry Vidal was murdered, and as with any tragedy, there is a feeling of disbelief, and an unfillable void. Now we are left with memories. In those thoughts can be found the best testament to Henry’s life on earth. The tributes that have been written and spoken are heartfelt and reflect his kindness, compassion, and unfailing generosity. Following are some of those memories. To Henry Vidal (1982-2015). Best Friend, Melanie Binder: Henry will always have a dear place in my heart. He was (he IS) one of the most precious , loveliest, warm-hearted humans I’ve ever known! I’m proud of knowing him, and he will always be a very important part of my life and my soul. AND as a true friend!!! It’s not possible to describe how it hurts. But I want to say: “Henry, be sure that I’ll keep you in my heart! !!! I wish I had a chance to say goodbye ... But I don’t want to say goodbye ...one day we’ll meet again- I’m sure…Because I know you were my soulmate...” Former partner Mark Robinson: Henry

CAPITOL BEAT BY LINDA PENTZ

Louisiana’s Governor Bobby Jindal Like Hitler Right about now, Louisiana governor, Bobby Jindal, is reminding me quite a bit of Adolf Hitler. I don’t say this lightly. The Hitler comparison gets trotted out too easily and too often (the irony is not missed here that homophobic former Bush administration official, Robert R. Reilly, recently compared the ”victimization” of opponents of same-sex marriage to laws revoking citizenship of Jews in Nazi Germany.).But Jindal, while in some ways indistinguishable from the countless other Republicans who are or might be running for President, seems to be pushing the anti-marriage equality agenda to new extremes. Jindal has decided that since, on May 19, a committee of the Louisiana Legislature defeated his Marriage and Conscience Act, he would just order it into place. The bill was designed to protect anyone in the state who acted “in accordance with a religious belief or moral conviction about the institution of marriage.” Garrett Epps explained it more succinctly in a recent column in The Atlantic. “That’s not authorization for discrimination; it’s impunity for discriminators,” he wrote. Although his order may not have any actual teeth, Jindal did it because, as he wrote in an April 23rd op-ed for the New York Times: “large corporations recently joined leftwing activists to bully elected officials into backing away from strong protections for religious liberty.” And Bobby Jindal won’t be bullied. He’s no Mike Pence! “I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator,” wrote Hitler in Mein Kampf. “By defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord.” The assault on the LGBT communities in Louisiana, Texas, Indiana and elsewhere are starting to take on an eerily similar tone to the preachings of that

other dictator. It’s ironic then that Jindal, like a little over 20% of the U.S. population, is Catholic. Just four days after Jindal tried to dictate discrimination in his state, Ireland, an overwhelmingly Catholic country, voted in a landslide to legalize same-sex marriage. It was the first ever country to do so by a popular vote. Every single political party in Ireland supported the “yes” campaign. Nineteen other countries have legalized the practice through their legislatures

and court systems. The post-vote rhetoric coming out of Ireland was so refreshingly positive and beautiful in contrast to the whiney victimhood spouted by right wing Republican leaders here. “With today’s vote, we have disclosed who we are: a generous, compassionate, bold and joyful people,” said Irish Prime Minister, Enda Kenny. Ireland is “a beacon, a light to the rest of the world, of liberty and equality,” said gay Cabinet Minister, Leo Varadkar. Even Michael Martin, the leader of Fianna

Fáil, the most conservatively Catholic of the parties in Ireland, declared: “It’s simply wrong in the 21st century to oppress people because of their sexuality.” But oppression is exactly what Jindal and the other Republicans considering a presidential run are after. Make no mistake about it, all of them, either through their words or their actions, are hostile to marriage equality either politically or personally or both. Many have decided that persecuting the LGBT

and lefties and that it is their rights that are being attacked. It’s the latest tactic of the anti-marriage equality sect. You claim victimhood while singling out a segment of society to blame for discriminating against you and insulting your supposedly Christian values. It’s a persecution campaign against one particular segment of society. Just like the rise of Nazism in the 1930s. Mike Huckabee thinks that allowing marriage equality is moving us “rapidly toward the criminalization of Christianity.” Ted Cruz warns that “ The modern Democratic Party has gotten so radical and so extreme in its devotion to mandatory gay marriage that they’ve decided there’s no room for the religious liberty protected under the First Amendment.” Ben Carson threatens: “Marriage is between a man and a woman. No group, be they gays, be they NAMBLA, be the people who believe in bestiality, it doesn’t matter what they are. They don’t get to change the definition.” The strident Carson and the rest were no doubt deaf to the words of UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon when he lauded the Ireland referendum: “The result sends an important message to the world: All people are entitled to enjoy their human rights no matter who they are or whom they love.” And they won’t allow their bigotry members of the national electorate to be blinded by the little light that is the number one bandwagon they is shining across the Atlantic right will happily not only climb onto now from Ireland — although they but commandeer. They don’t even are probably happy to learn that care if the statistics show that the abortion is still illegal there so the country, thankfully, is trending the Utopia is not quite complete. other way. Australian Opposition Party Proposes Gay Marriage Law

Even with all lawmakers allowed a free vote, gay rights advocates say the result would be close.

Gay Rights Activists Clash With Foes In Moscow, 15 Detained

MOSCOW (AP) - Police in the Russian capital have detained 15 people after a clash broke out between gay-rights advocates and opponents. A small group of activists tried to hold an unauthorized demonstration in support of gay rights outside the mayor’s office on May 30. But opponents fought with them and police detained people from both sides. There was no immediate word on whether any of those detained would be charged, the Interfax news agency reported. Animosity toward homosexuals is high in Russia. Authorities routinely deny permission to hold gay-rights demonstrations on the grounds of maintaining public order and avoiding violence..”

For The First Time, India Appoints A Transgender Person To Lead College KOLKATA (AP) - India has for the first time appointed a transgender as the principal of a college, a top

education official said May 27. Manabi Banerjee, a transgender woman, will head the Krishnagar Women’s College in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, said Dipak K. Kar, chairman of an education panel that selects college principals in the state. Banerjee is expected to start her new job on June 9, Kar said. “She has been teaching in a college for more than 20 years, and had the necessary administrative experience. She was chosen through the usual selection process,” said Kar. India’s transgender activists hailed the appointment as a proud day for a community that usually faces discrimination. “This is a proud moment for us. It’s great that people have begun accepting transgenders. Everybody should feel proud about this decision,” said Rudrani Chettri, director of Mitr Trust, a group working for transgender rights. Last year, India’s Supreme Court declared the transgender community as a legal third gender, granting them minority rights and privileges to education, employment and health benefits. Since then, some colleges have offered a choice in indicating their gender in application forms. Krishnagar Women’s College offers undergraduate courses in the sciences and humanities. It is located in Krishnanagar, a town about 105 kilometers (65 miles) north of Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal.

important trigger for a similar debate in Australia. Opinion polls show that most Australians support gay marriage. Gay rights advocates say Australia is now the only English-speaking developed country to ban same-sex marriage after the Irish vote. In 2004, the Parliament changed the Marriage Act with the unanimous support of the ruling conservative coalition and Labor to make it clear that only a man and a woman could marry. But Labor has since changed its stance. A draft law to allow same-sex marriage proposed by a junior Labor lawmaker in 2012 while Labor was in government was soundly rejected by the House of Representatives, 98 votes to 42. Abbott was then opposition leader and the then Prime Minister Julia Gillard was gay marriage opponent. Labor lawmakers were allowed to vote according to their consciences, while Liberal lawmakers were required to oppose marriage equality. Abbott says the party has yet to decide whether his party’s lawmakers would he allowed a free vote when the issue next comes up in Parliament. Analysts say that since Abbott’s authority was weakened by a leadership challenge from within his party in February, he may be unlikely to anger marriage equality advocates within government ranks by denying them a free vote.

June 03, 2015

CANBERRA (AP) - Australia’s political opposition hopes to harness momentum from the Irish gay marriage referendum after it proposed a law June 1 that would recognize same-sex marriages, something the country’s conservative prime minister is against. Center-left Labor Party leader Bill Shorten became the first leader of a major Australian political party to back a bill to overturn a national ban on gay marriage. Gay rights advocates fear that government lawmakers will be reluctant to support the bill as such a law would be seen as a political victory for Shorten over Prime Minister Tony Abbott, a former Roman Catholic seminarian and a staunch opponent of marriage equality. Shorten told Parliament the law would not compel religious clerics to officiate at same-sex marriages. He called on Abbott to allow lawmakers in his ruling Liberal Party a free vote, rather than require them to back the party’s line in opposing marriage equality. “Our laws should be a mirror reflecting our great and generous country and our free, inclusive society,” Shorten said on introducing the bill. Shorten’s deputy Tanya Plebersek seconded the bill, after no government lawmaker took up the offer to perform that official function as a gesture of bipartisanship support. Abbott said his government was focused on Australia’s economic and national security rather than marriage law reform. “Let’s see where the community debate goes. ... There’s a range of views on both sides of the issue,” Abbott told reporters shortly before Shorten introduced his legislation. There is no timetable set for a vote, but Labor hopes it will happen this year. Labor Senate leader Penny Wong, who is in a lesbian relationship, said that the recent referendum in which 62 percent of Irish voters called for their constitution to be changed to allow same-sex marriage was an

THE WEEK

fter an unforgettable start at the MOD Wine Lounge last week, I ventured around the corner to the Café Vico Italian Restaurant (Thank you Eric!). Dining at Cafe Vico, a premier Italian restaurant in Fort Lauderdale, is more than a delicious dinner. It’s a lasting memory. From the personal greeting at the door (if it’s owner Marco Vico, ladies often get a kiss on the hand) to the final sip of rich espresso or bite of Italian dessert, the attention is on you and making sure you have an evening to remember. Café Vico is more like the bustling Italian restaurants in New York’s famed Little Italy than one you might find in Fort Lauderdale. It has the linens, delicious Italian food and excellent service you expect in a fine dining experience, but with an added warmth and informality that invites you to linger and enjoy, to savour your Italian wine and share lively conversation. The service at Café Vico Italian restaurant is impeccable. The ambiance is never stuffy; it is always welcoming. The service is attentive but not rushed. Even if your favorite special isn’t on the menu, you can ask for it any time. After we were seated, we were greeted by our server, Fernando who lived up to the Café Vico reputation of great service. Since I had just plowed through a huge appetizer at MOD, I had to pass on the delectable appetizer offerings. Besides the daily appetizer special, other offerings include a Traditional Caprese ($13), Shrimp Cocktail ($17) and a Cold Antipasto Platter ($13). Hot appetizers include Fried Calamari ($14), Clams Casino ($14) and a Stuffed Artichoke ($19). There are the usual soups (Pasta Fagioli at $6.95), salads (House, Arugula, or Caesar at $8.95) and Sauted Veg-

etables (Spinach, Mushrooms, or Brocoli at $7.95) to accompany the main dishes, which include Risotto, Pastas (fresh, homemade and stuffed!), Chicken, Veal, Pork, Steak, Fish and Seafood ($19.95 to $48.95). WOW. From the moment you sit down and receive a menu at Cafe Vico, you are catered to and every care is taken to make sure you are served everything you want exactly the way you want it. I ordered the Lasagna which they tout as the “best in Fort Lauderdale”. The Lasagna alla Bolognese ($22.95) is a creamy dish made with a béchamel sauce instead of the traditional red sauce. I had it for lunch the next day as well and it was great. My dining companion had the Ravioli Special ($22.95). Each of their stuffed Italian pastas are very distinctive in their combinations of flavours from the Tortellini ($25.95) stuffed with beef in a creamy pink sauce with green peas and pancetta to the Seafood Ravioli ($25.95) which is stuffed with crabmeat and ricotta and served with a lobster cream sauce. Delicious! We ended the evening with an espresso coffee and an Italian desert. What a great way to finish a fine meal. The Café Vico promise (which they lived up to) – “you will never be rushed through your special evening.” They have culinary delights and old world charm with great food you can’t forget. Step into a warm embrace of flavors and old world charm that will guarantee that the only question you have at the end of your lunch or dinner at Café Vico Italian Restaurant is when you can come back! return to the starting position. Keep constant tension on your lats by keeping your arms

slightly bent and lats tight at the top of each rep. Seated Rows on a machine

are great for lats, rhomboids (your shoulder retractors) and traps. Seated on the floor or on the seat of the machine, plant your feet firmly against the foot platform. Grasp the bar (preferably a small “V” shaped bar). Keep your back straight as you lean slightly back giving the arms a nice stretch. This is the starting position. Now, pull the weight back and slightly upward to your diaphragm. Squeeze your shoulder blades together at the top of the movement, and in a controlled fashion, return to the starting position. One Arm Dumbbell rows are superb for isolating each side of the back. With one knee on a flat bench and your upper body mostly parallel to the floor, place your same-side hand on the bench for support. Grasp a dumbbell with your working hand. Contract your lat muscle to pull the weight up to your arm pit. Squeeze your back muscles at the top and slowly return the dumbbell to the starting position. Complete all 8-12 reps, then repeat this procedure on the opposite side. When working your back, or any muscle group, remember to breathe properly by inhaling during the easier part of the movement and exhaling during the more strenuous part of the movement. Remember, you only have one back, so stick with proper form and use weights that are lighter when trying a new exercise. Your back like every muscle group in your body is a work of art in progress.

have always noticed how guys love to work their arms and chest in the gym. There is something gratifying about seeing that pump right in front of you in the mirror. Yet there are other muscle groups equally as important, not only for an amazing physique, but for day to day activities as well. Let’s talk back. Here is a basic routine that will strengthen your back muscles and add size as well. Try 3-4 sets of 8-12 reps. Pyramid your weight up with each set. Adhere to proper form as always. I like to begin my routine with the Bent Over Barbell Row. Begin this basic multi-joint exercise standing with your feet shoulder width apart, bend at the hips so your upper body is almost parallel to the floor. Bend your knees slightly and grasp a barbell with an overhand grip, hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Lift the weight toward your abdomen, pulling with your back muscles first, your arms second. Squeeze your shoulder blades together at the top of the movement as if squeezing a penny between them. Complete the rep by lowering the barbell to starting position. Front Cable Pull Downs are my favorite exercise for pumping up the back and getting that sexy “V” shape. Attach a long bar to a pull down machine. Plant both feet flat on the floor with your knees secure under the pads (if available). Reach up and grasp the bar as wide as possible with an over hand grip. Sit and fully extend your arms. Lean slightly back, stick out your chest and keep your body still. Contract your lats as you pull the bar down to your upper chest. Squeeze your shoulder blades together when the bar touches your sternum, and then slowly

6/06 Third Eye Blind/ Dashboard Confessional Not too long ago, Third Eye Blind ruled the top 40 radio airplay with songs about how it was “gonna be” after a relationship and their “semicharmed” life. Even if they haven’t had a hit in over a decade, these alt-rockers can still deliver the kind of soft rock vocals that earned them a legion of fans and heavy airplay back in the latter days of the past millennium. Playing along with them is Chris Carrabba’s alterna-emo band Dashboard Confessional. 7:00 p.m. Bayfront Park Amphitheater. 301 N. Biscayne Blvd. Miami. 33132.

THE WEEK

ORLANDO

BY PATRICK ROBERT

THE WEEKEND Gay Days The 25th anniversary of Gay Days in Orlando is full of the same prideful mayhem that has made this annual event both popular and controversial. From the circuit parties at Typhoon Lagoon and Epcot Center to the pool parties at B Resort and Spa to the performances by Wilson Phillips and Salt-N-Pepa at Parliament house, this year’s event promises to be as raucous as ever. If anything, it’s always a kick to see so many same-sex couples, roaming the theme parks, hand in hand. Various times and locations throughout the weekend.

6/06 New Kids on the Block It may be more than two decades since New Kids on the Block owned the hearts of America’s teenage girls (and some boys), yet the boy band is back on a nostalgia tour, joined by TLC and Nelly. Jordan and Jonathan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, and Danny Wood enjoyed such popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s that their eighty million in sales made them one of the world’s best-selling groups of all time. 7:00 p.m. Amway Center. 400 W. Church St. Orlando. 32801.

Lisa Lampanelli Known for her intense racial insensitivity, Lisa Lampanelli routinely lampoons her own attraction to black men (and their most prominent sexual organ) when she’s not jabbing at the politics of gay sex. She’s been such an outspoken proponent of gay rights that even The Westboro Baptist Church once planned to protest one of her shows. She brings her filthy mouth tonight to the Hard Rock. 8:00 p.m. Hard Rock Café Orlando. 6050 Universal Blvd. Orlando. 32819.

of the summer of 2015. If you have even the mildest case of vertigo, you’d be wise to avoid San Andreas, especially in 3D. Otherwise, plan to ignore the idiotic dialogue, focus on Johnson’s physique and get shaken up by the other visuals. retentious and at least 30 minutes too long, the biopic Saint Laurent (Sony) has one thing going for it – Paul Giamatti isn’t in it. That said, Gaspard Ulliel’s transformation into celebrated gay fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, from 1967 to 1976, is indeed a thing of beauty. YSL’s passion for fashion, opera, chocolate and French Bulldogs was surpassed only by his obsession with cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, and men. Saint Laurent traces the designer’s ascent to the top. From his correspondence and friendship with Andy Warhol to his relationships with muse Loulou (Léa Seydoux), lover/business partner Pierre (Jérémie Renier), favorite model Betty (Aymeline Valade) and lover/bad influence Jacques (Louis Garrel), to his devoted staff and the devotees of his designs, YSL’s trajectory laid the groundwork for the multitude of designers that rose in his wake. Ultimately, Saint Laurent relies too much on mood and music to make its point. There are awkward transitions to the past and the Saint Laurent at the end of his life that become jarring after a while. Still, Saint Laurent is worth trying on for vintage fashions and for Ulliel’s performance. In French and English, with subtitles.

ter Blake (Alexandra Daddario) to college, but all that changes when troublesome seismic activity in Nevada takes priority. Ray, Blake and estranged wife Emma (Carla Gugino, who still hasn’t become a better actress after all these years), are still struggling with how to cope following the drowning death of daughter Mallory a few years earlier. Ray isn’t the only authority onscreen. Earthquake expert Lawrence (the ubiquitous Paul Giamatti, who again miraculously passes large amounts of scenery through his colon), has been hard at work on perfecting the ability to predicting quakes. Guess what? Just as he discovers there’s going to be a quake affecting the San Andrea fault, it strikes! Beginning with the destruction of Hoover San Andreas (Courtesy of hdwallpapersnews.com) Dam and continuing west to Los Angeles and north to San Francisco, tectonic plates shift, the earth splits open, explosions occur, fires burn, walls and roads crumble, bridges wobble, high rises disintegrate, a tsunami floods the land and lots of people are injured and killed. Blake falls in love with would-be architect Ben (Hugo Johnstone-Burt). Ben’s wisecracking kid brother Ollie (Art Parkinson) provides comic relief. Emma falls out of love with self-absorbed architect Daniel (Ioan Gruffud). Ray and Emma reunite to rescue Blake. As you might expect, San Andreas is at its most groundbreaking (so to speak) during the destruction and escape-from-destruction sequences, making it one of the great thrill rides
