Judge: Arkansas Must Recognize In-State Same-Sex Marriages
June 10, 2015

Multimedia Platforms’ CEO, Bobby Blair, Participates in Celebrity USTA Sanctioned Tennis Exhibition WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA--Major League Baseball’s Billy Bean, former NBA player Jason Collins, and former world ranked tennis player and Multimedia Platforms’ CEO and founder Bobby Blair took part in a celebrity tennis exhibition on Sunday, June 7. The event was part of the City of West Hollywood’s Pride Tennis Tournament. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) made history in January 2015 by adding same-gender couples doubles tournaments to its sanctioned list of competitive events in its popular adult division. The Tournament took place during the City of West Hollywood’s One City One Pride festival, which runs 40 days, Friday, May 22, 2015 through Tuesday, June 30, 2015. Blair, CEO of the only LGBTQ
publicly traded media company (MMPW) said, “Multimedia Platforms is consolidating the global LGBTQ media industry through an all-inclusive platform consisting of newspaper, magazine, entertainment, social media, online, video and mobile applications. We are focused on leveraging top media brands in top markets to create one, unified, national brand. “I want to thank my good friends Billy Bean and Jason Collins who I was lucky enough to play alongside in WeHo’s Pride Tennis Tournament to continue bringing awareness to the LGBT community. Through our vision at Multimedia Platforms, and the support we have received from events such as WeHo Pride, we look forward to providing the global business community with access to the extremely loyal and influential LGBT community.” Billy Bean is a former outfielder with the Los Angeles Dodgers and current Major League Baseball’s Ambassador for Inclusion. Jason Collins is the first National Basketball Association (NBA) player to come out as openly gay. In addition to his executive position at MMPW, Bobby Blair is the author of Hiding Inside The Baseline, his autobiography.
LITTLE ROCK, AK (AP) - A judge has ordered Arkansas officials to recognize over 500 same-sex marriages performed in the state last year, a move that will let the couples enjoy benefits such as filing taxes jointly. Pulaski County Circuit Judge Wendell Griffen on Tuesday validated marriage licenses issued to same-sex couples after another judge struck down the state’s gay marriage ban. The state Supreme Court halted the distribution of marriage licenses to gay couples after a week in May 2014 and is considering the appeal over a voterapproved same-sex marriage ban. Griffen’s ruling means the couples can file taxes jointly, appear jointly on a child’s birth certificate, enroll together on state health insurance plans or even file for divorce. The state could appeal. Griffen was among those who presided over same-sex weddings last year.
Alaska Airlines Offers Discounts To Pride Events Across Country
ANCHORAGE, AK—Alaska Airlines, in what it labels its continuing effort for “a more equitable society,” is offering discounted airfare to cities holding Pride Events in the U.S. Among them are Los Angeles, New Orleans and Boston. The move has caused a predictable outcry among right-wingers. Alaska Air said: “At Alaska, we have been longtime supporters of the LGBT community and remain committed to a more equitable society. We were elated when the State of Washington expressed the same commitment by legalizing marriage for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.” “To show our continued support, we are encouraging the LGBT community to travel, not only to Seattle, but to Pride events and gay friendly destinations all over the country. “With that aim, we have put together this section of our site to highlight destinations that support marriage equality, Pride celebrations,
and other things of interest to the LGBT community.” Some have decried it as “discrimination” in favor of LGBT people, with right-wing blogger David Blount claiming: “The establishment campaign to promote disease-spreading and culturecorroding perversity has reached the point that Alaska Airlines now implies discounts for homosexuals.” “How applying cultural Marxism with special ‘Pride Discounts’ for groups favored by liberals will make for a more ‘equitable society’ is left for college professors to explain. “It’s their airline; to the extent the government leaves them alone, they are free to push whatever agenda they want, just as we are free to take any other transportation we can find including dog sleds rather than fly Alaska Airlines. But imagine how fast Big Government would come down on them if their advertisements led people to believe they could get a discount for being sexually healthy.”
No Mention Of Gays In Indiana Governor’s LGBT Pride Proclamation
INDIANAPOLIS—The Indianapolis Pride Festival begins Friday, and continues for nine days culminating in the Cadillac Barbie Pride Parade on June 13 down Massachusetts Avenue--all without an endorsement from the governor of the state. In welcoming visitors to the state, Gov. Mike Pence issued his first ever LGBT Pride Proclamation without ever mentioning the word “Pride.” There is not mention of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or any other sexual orientation either. This bizard statement stands as another slap-in-the-face to the LGBT community that has recently had to endure many after Indiana passed a bill that allows businesses, churches and organisations to refuse to serve anyone based on their religious beliefs. It was intended to “protect” businesses from having to provide services for same-sex weddings after they became legal in the state. Despite hiring a PR agency to improve its image, the Governor’s message is a specific indication of how little changed.
Billie Jean King: Caitlyn Jenner Helps Transgender Tolerance
NEW YORK (AP) - Billie Jean King believes Caitlyn Jenner has given people clarity about transgender issues beyond the progress already seen four decades after they shared the international spotlight as athletes. “The interview with then-Bruce Jenner, and now Caitlyn Jenner, really helped people to be clear in understanding, especially about gender vs. sexuality,” the 71-year-old former tennis star said in an interview with The Associated Press. “Everybody’s always getting very confused with that. Then they finally realized they have nothing to do with each other.” King won the last of her 12 Grand Slam singles titles in 1975, a year before Bruce Jenner earned the unofficial title of “world’s greatest athlete” by winning gold in the decathlon at the Montreal Olympics. Jenner, 65, publicly transitioned from Bruce in an interview with ABC’s Diane Sawyer in April to Caitlyn on the cover of Vanity Fair this week. “I am so happy he’s finally going to be comfortable in his own skin;
finally Caitlyn will be,” King said. “It’s been a long journey for Caitlyn, and I’m really happy for her.” King occasionally traveled in the same circles with Jenner, given they were two of the most recognizable athletes in the 1970s. “He was amazing when he won the decathlon, so I would run into him every so often,” King said. “We actually did a commercial together, but I don’t think they ever showed it.” King was 29 when she defeated former professional tennis player Bobby Riggs, 55, in the famed “Battle of the Sexes” match in 1973, putting gender issues in the spotlight. She later helped pros accept a transgender player in their ranks after she started the Women’s Tennis Association in 1973. Renee Richards, who was denied the opportunity to play as a woman in the 1976 U.S. Open, was born Richard Raskind, a former captain of the Yale tennis team who had sex reassignment surgery. The New York Supreme Court ruled in Richards’ favor, allowing Richards to join the women’s pro tour in 1977. King said she called the players together after meeting with Richards for four hours and receiving confirmation from doctors that she was a woman.
“I said ‘We’re going to have her on the tour, so get used to it.’ Some were unhappy, some were trying to figure it out. But it worked out fantastic,” King said. “The players ended up loving Renee.” King played doubles with Richards, who reached the U.S. Open women’s doubles finals in 1977 with Betty Ann Stuart. Richards, who was also a renowned ophthalmologist, later coached Martina Navratilova and “really improved her backhand,” King said. King marvels at how attitudes about sexual identity have changed since the early 1970s. “Being educated, learning, having knowledge is so much better,” she said. “Usually things become less shame-based the more you know. An unknown is usually what people usually fear the most.” Jenner introduced Caitlyn via Twitter and soon after was named the recipient of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award for the upcoming ESPY Awards on July 15. King, who was outed as a lesbian in 1981, won the award for individual contributions that “transcend sports” in 1999. “Caitlyn’s in for a whirlwind. She already has been, but it’s going to be crazy,” King said. “I think it’s really appropriate that Caitlyn’s won the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.”

LONGMONT, CO (AP) - The Colorado school that barred a gay valedictorian from coming out during his commencement speech denies it discriminated against the teen, and says no discussion of sexual orientation is appropriate for a graduation ceremony. In a letter released Tuesday, the Twin Peaks Charter Academy in Longmont announced it was conducting an internal review of what happened after Democratic U.S. Rep. Jared Polis of Colorado requested a probe. In a letter to the school dated Friday, Polis cited media reports that Evan Young, 18, was not allowed to give his speech at his May 16 graduation solely on the basis of his sexual orientation and was denied recognition of his academic achievements. School board president Kathy DeMatteo, writing to Polis, said officials do not “believe that a discussion of a student’s sexual orientation - no matter what that sexual orientation happens to be - is a proper matter for a commencement address. It beggars belief that you do.”
DeMatteo said Young was barred from delivering his speech not because he is gay but because of his “apparent intention to make a mockery” of the ceremony, and said his academic achievements were recognized in the event’s program and at another gathering. In a statement Wednesday, Polis called for an independent investigation, saying school officials already had made up their minds and were “throwing Evan under the bus.” The events in Longmont contrast with a decision by another Colorado school to allow its high school valedictorian to come out in her graduation speech. During her weekend speech in Carbondale, Roaring Fork High School graduate Emily Bruell received a standing ovation. Her principal, expressing concern about the high rates of suicide and other problems encountered by teens labeled as different, praised Bruell’s courage and said her speech would help all his students feel safe and accepted at school .

“Greetings,” Pence’s message began. “On behalf of the people of Indiana, welcome to Indianapolis. I am confident that those of you who traveled from out of state will come to know our famous Hoosier Hospitality. Our state’s capital city is well known as a destination for conventions, festivals, business meetings and other events. In fact, a recent USA TODAY Reader’s Choice digital poll ranked Indianapolis as the Best Convention City in the country. Like so many other organizations who continue to use Indianapolis as their destination of choice, I am confident you will come to know a vibrant city. During your stay, please explore the many entertainment options Indianapolis has to offer such as our museums, restaurants, theaters, historic landmarks, White River State Park, and the Indianapolis Zoo, just to name a few. WhatsApp: The Cure For The Common Text Messenger

phone subscribers. WhatsApp Messenger allows you to use the same internet data plan that you have for email and Internet browsing, but there is no cost to message. The service is available for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, Windows Phone, and Nokia. As well as person-to-person messages, WhatsApp allows you to send group messages, to a maximum 10 participants. You can also send images, audio and video clips, and emojis, and attach files, locations, and contact cards. WhatsApp doesn’t require you to create an account, or log into one, the first time you use it. (Not so for Facebook Messenger and other mobile messaging apps.) On the other hand, requiring a phone number for verification means you’re limited to utilizing devices with a phone number (i.e., tablet users are out of luck). It also means that you are limited to a single device. You can add as many phones as you like, but your contacts will need those numbers listed in their address books. Also on the downside, WhatsApp does not support live video chatting, which may leave consumers wanting, especially when many of the competition—including Skype, Snapchat, and Apple’s FaceTime, among others— have already embraced the idea. WhatsApp is still leading the pack of chat messengers. Little wonder that Facebook paid like a gazillion dollars to buy it last year. But those in-theknow suspect its days—and users— are numbered.

The concept of “staying in touch” has changed profoundly over the last decade. Some of us still can recall typing “1-4” into a pager as being the epitome of Tech-Talk (the numbers, read upside down, approximate the word “hi”—ah the Gay and Innocent ’90s…). Setting aside such “primitive” options, texting has been joined by Facebook messaging and a slew of other communications-related apps for the consumer market. These days, when social media enables us to clock in as many friends who live overseas as those who live around the corner, staying in touch can be an expensive proposition, unless your tech options are able to lower or even eliminate the cost. Throwing VoIP (Voiceover Internet Protocol) calling into the mix, and you’ve gone a long way toward completely eliminating the need for a talk plan Among the most notable crossplatform mobile messaging services is WhatsApp. With more than 800 million users worldwide, it remains the industry leader. In a nutshell, WhatsApp Messenger allows users to exchange messages with each other, without the need to pay for SMS (or Short Message Service—the text messaging component of phone, Web, or mobile communication systems). In 2010, SMS was the most widely- used data application, with an estimated 3.5 billion active users, accounting for about 80% of all mobile

SUNSHINE STATE WITHDRAWAL AND UNCONDITIONAL APOLOGY
Last week’s cover of the Florida Agenda has come under fire for what is widely considered inappropriate artwork accompanying the story of popular bartender Henry Vidal’s suspected homicide. We apologize unconditionally for the publication of this choice of artwork and accept responsibility for the error in judgment. It was not our intention to add to the drama surrounding the emotional passing of this popular and beloved young man. Both the cover and cover story were changed literally minutes before a late night printing deadline in order to report the breaking news that Mr. Vidal’s death had been ruled a homicide by the authorities. It was under these circumstances that a poor choice of artwork was made without the normal approval process of upper management. The accompanying story and the tributes to Mr. Vidal were all factual. The Florida Agenda will be donating $2,500 to the Reward Fund for information leading the arrest of the perpetrator in this case.

Christian School Uninvites Gay Senior Class President
JACKSONVILLE--A private Christian school has been accused of discriminating against its recently graduated Senior Class President for announcing via Twitter that he is gay. Bryce Goodson, who attended the $11,000 a year school, announced on his Twitter account, “Happy to finally be able to tell everyone: I’m gay.” The following day, Goodson received notification that he was no longer welcome to attend or participate in a school function. Goodson’s response was to start an on-line petition under the title “Love Thy Neighbor.” “Shortly after I came out as gay on Twitter, I was contacted by a teacher and was told that the Providence School Board decided it would be unwise for me to attend the Pony Awards (the award ceremony for our school musi-
cal, Little Women),” Goodson wrote in his petition. “They ‘highly suggested’ that I refrain from showing up at the event. However, this action was taken after I had graduated from Providence, and therefore the school had no right in interceding in my actions. The handbook states that ‘Providence School reserves the right to discipline for both on-campus and off-campus misbehavior during the time students possess official enrollee status.’ I no longer was an enrollee. “Also, the handbook outlines ‘social exclusion or isolation’ as a form of bullying, and that is exactly what the Board did to me. I make this petition in hopes of gathering support and showing Providence how poorly they handled the situation. The Board did not emulate the love that Christians are supposed to stand for.” According to WJXT, officials at the school declined an on-camera interview, but the head of the school, Dr. Julie Giardino, said they are not aware of the petition. Giardino did comment that any action by Providence was in line with the school’s faith and mission statement. “Providence School, in partnership with home and church, is committed to disciple students to boldly model Christ-likeness. We hold the state of marriage to be an expres-
sion of a Biblical standard and the union between a man and a woman.” The petition may be viewed at http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/ love-your-neighbor.
Pastor Claims Sign Is Not Gay Bashing
SARASOTA--A Florida pastor whose church has garnered controversy for posting a sign denouncing the idea of the Boy Scouts of America having gay scout leaders says that the sign is “not gay bashing.” K.C. McCay, pastor at The Congregational Church of Nokomis, recently displayed an LED sign comparing the notion of gay scout leaders to a fox entering a hen house. McCay told The Christian Post that the sign came in response to BSA President Robert Gates’ recent call for allowing openly gay individuals to become scout leaders. “Having been a Boy Scout, a Scoutmaster for many years, a father to two Silver Palm Eagle Scouts, and having been molested by a scout leader in my youth, I felt I had a responsibility, right and duty to speak up,” McCay told reporter Michael Gryboski. “After writing a letter to Gates of BSA, I received no reply. So I placed this message on my sign.”
McCay also told The Christian Post that he changes the church’s LED sign “weekly to include as many as 10 to15 new messages about the Gospel of Jesus Christ, His hope, and our responsibilities.” “It is typically peppered with many different subjects that we face today. I changed the sign to include this message on May 30,” McCay continued. “I changed it again yesterday, but kept this message and added another calling out of BSA executives. I have no definitive time as to how long it will stay.”
Pembroke Pines Commissioner Flips Off His Facebook Friends
PEMBROKE PINES --Pembroke Pines City Commissioner Angelo Castillo has enflamed his constituents and others within the LGBT community with a Facebook post presumably making fun of Caitlyn Jenner’s transitioning. In the post, Castillo, who was the former executive director of the Broward House, said that he had decided to “remain a guy. Now, I know this defies all conventional wisdom, trends and styles. Yet I’ve considered my decisions carefully and just feel

it will be better for all concerned.” Castillo then requested a discussion of the topic. When Castillo’s Fackbook friends began to take exception to his post, he blasted their criticism of his obvious satire. “But nobody — as in nobody — tells me how to think, write or speak. You can like, or dislike, agree or disagree, sympathize or alienate, chuckle or cry, cringe or embrace, all or none, all that and more however you wish. But in this country, I have a right to say what I wish in the manner that I choose for the purposes I select and in the way I think is right. Anybody that doesn’t like me doing that they can go f*ck themselves. Is that clear enough?” In defense of Castillo, he also commented: “No seriously, the thing about the Discuss series is to make people confront and conversate about the events of our day in the hope of reaching some common understanding on views if not an amicable consensus. All my comments are raised in tha spirt irrespective of the provacative ways I may choose to present them.”

This will allow the work of our co-founders, Nadine Smith and Stratton Pollitzer, their talented staff and our throngs of amazing volunteers and supporters to continue as a leader of the LGBT rights movement in Florida and as an example across the country.” ? Lifesaving Lighted Crosswalks: Wilton Manors Needs to Get on Board
June 10, 2015
20
O
n Las Olas Blvd. at the corner SE 13th Ave., there’s a rarity in Fort Lauderdale—a lighted crosswalk. Installed last year by the Traffic Safety Corporation for a cool $50,000, most would consider the cost a bargain if it saves lives. And it has. The crosswalk was prompted by the hit-and-run death of 65-year-old Carolyn Bianco five years ago. She was struck and killed as she attempted to cross Las Olas near SE 11th Ave. It took four years, but now the crosswalk is very much in place and stands as a testament to community involvement in street safety. For the gay community in Wilton Manors, the accomplishment on Las Olas stands as a bitter reminder of the Island City’s defeat. For years, both the citizenry and the City Commission have been attempting to reduce the safety risk that crossing the town’s main artery involves. Despite the road’s 30 mph speed limit, it is not unusual to see cars racing along at much higher speeds, with the drivers on their cellphones and pedestrians risking life and limb to move between the many bars and clubs that the Drive connects. Because of the lack of parking, sudden U-turns at the sight of an empty spot are commonplace, as are jaywalkers who try to skirt the distance between formal crosswalks and popular nightclubs, through a choreographed mad dash across the Drive. Up at the far south end of the Drive, where Tropics Piano Bar and Restaurant is located, older gays congregate—and the “mad dash” is more of a slow hobble as the young at heart attempt the same lifeendangering maneuver. A month ago, on May 2, two men were struck while attempting to cross the street sending them to the hospital, and onlooker Andrew Brett to the
city’s Commissioner’s Meeting on May 12 to complain about the lack of crosswalks—specifically on the corner of NE 20th Street and Wilton Drive which is adjacent to Richardson Park. Long time mayor Gary Resnick replied with his official stance that Wilton Drive is a state road, and as such is governed by the Florida Department of Transportation. City Hall attempted to get the state to place crosswalks at the most obvious traffic areas, but failed. It was the FDOT that decided that a crosswalk in front of City Hall “was more useful” than one in front of businesses. But as outraged local business leaders insist, and the Agenda agrees, much more needs to be done—and soon. Dawn Holloway, co-owner of The Pink Submarine sandwich shop, says that it’s time to buy the Drive from the state. “It would be very smart if they consider negotiating with the state to purchase the road and finally do something.” Costly? Yes. But Wilton Manors has 183 round-the-clock parking meters on the Drive, all charging $1 an hour for their use. Ditto the parking
lots at Richardson Park, Hagen Park and NE 8th Terrace which charge for parking after 6 pm. “For as long as they been talking about all the money that they have collected over the year, they could have bought the road already,” Holloway adds. Antonio Duma, owner of To The Moon Marketplace, the city’s candy store of choice, has been on the Drive for almost 11 years. “From the corner of NE Sixth Ave and Wilton Drive to NE 21St Court, there are no crosswalks—just a traffic light. That’s a long way to go if you live in the Gables to come to this side of the street to do business or just to cross the street. “At this point, I’ll take a brush and paint a crosswalk myself from my door to Chic Optique across the street,” he barks, and somehow you believe that he will. “And there needs to be one from NE 22 St. right over to the Gables (apartment complex). How much does it take to paint a crosswalk?” Mark Hunter, owner of Hunters Nightclub, is relatively new to the Drive, but is equally as worried. “There
needs to be an open forum with all concerned parties involved. Getting the public involved on the crosswalk issue will help bring up ideas for a solution.” Jon Anthony, owner of Towne Clothiers, feels it’s a three-prong issue. “It’s a pedestrians issue, a matter of more police presence, and the city needs to evaluate whether we need more crosswalks. All three need to participate,” he says. As it happens, there is a crosswalk at the corner by Towne Clothiers, but Anthony sees that people don’t use it. “Since it’s not lit, they’re unsure of their own safety. “We certainly need more police to monitor the traffic laws,” he says. “There is so much speeding and illegal U-turns. Police need to get onboard and support our traffic laws. “Everyone has their hands in this,” he says. What no one wants to see is a repeat of what happened on Las Olas Blvd., where a hit-and-run death became the bellwether of change. Or as Antonio Duma says, “They’re just waiting for someone else to die.”

pride and celebration of the 2015 Legacy Couples.” Poor Franklin. If he only knew that BB&T also held a gay wedding inside one of its branches in South Beach. During the ceremony last February, Frank Petrole, 77, and Marc Rudick, 87, retired Philadelphia hairdressers who live in Hallandale, took the plunge after spending the last 55 years together. Friends and fellow legacy couple Maurice Colton and Norman King, together 43 years, served as Petrole and Rudick’s best men. That alone should be enough to send Franklin back to Facebook, preaching for repentance. Ah…but then again Franklin, Facebook has long been outspoken about its support of the LGBT community. Next, the braintrust of the Billy Graham legacy moved his hundred of millions of donations over to BB&T Bank in an effort, as he says, to “stop doing business with those who promote sin and stand against Almighty God’s laws and His standards.” Franklin must not be aware the BB&T was this year’s sponsor of the Miami Beach Gay Pride Parade. Moreoever, the bank was the chief sponsor of the city’s “Legacy Couples,” which celebrates same-sex couples in “committed relationships of 10 years or longer.” While Wells Fargo has consistently earned 100% in the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index, BB&T Bank has been almost as sterling, earning an 80%. A BB&T spokesperson said that the bank is eager to “support the individuals and organizations that broaden our perspectives and strengthen the diverse fabric of our communities. That’s why BB&T is proud to be a part of this day of

he Reverend Franklin Graham went on a rant last week against American businesses. His daddy, Reverend Billy Graham, has been called the “Greatest Evangelist of the 20th Century,’ but any comparison between father and son stops there. While the elder Graham made his name through gentle wisdom and mediation of thoughts, the younger takes his cue from aggressive campaigning from the pulpit, or, in last week’s case, from his Facebook page. “Have you ever asked yourself: How can we fight the tide of moral decay that is being rammed down our throats by big business, the media, and the gay and lesbian community?” Franklin asked. He was, of course, armed and ready with the answer. Don’t agree with the political or moral stance of a company? You boycott them. Ohh-kay. The fact that this light-bulb-over-hishead moment was news is prompted by the way Franklin addressed his epiphany. “It has dawned on me that we don’t have to do business with them,” he wrote. Dah. But wait, there’s more comedy to be found in this closet. Graham, the younger, pointed to Wells Bank as an example of that “moral decay.” It seems he took exception to the fact that the bank is using “a same-sex couple in their advertising.” The advertisement features two young women who are studying sign language. Phrases like “I’m so proud of you,” and “Let’s read a book.” A jazz piano accompaniment soothes in the background as the scenes culminate in a touching moment when we see the pair signing, “Hello beautiful. We’re going to be your new mommies.” A hearing impaired little girl with a pigtail looks on enchanted. “Everyone works hard for a reason,” a voiceover tells us. “Working together, we can help you prepare financially for when two becomes three. Wells Fargo. Together we’ll go far.” Not to worry, Franklin wrote. “At the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, we are moving our accounts from Wells Fargo to another bank.” That’ll show ‘em Franklin.

CAPITOL BEAT BY LINDA PENTZ
Parents, Not Kids, Drive Bigotry In Schools “In terms of our school, I feel like we are really progressive, which is probably a sad statement in terms of where we probably should be as a country,” said Casey Crouse, principal of Eastern Middle School, when we sat down to talk about how her school came to be the first middle school in the State of Maryland to start a Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA). Eastern is nestled in a progressive enclave in Montgomery County, a few miles from Washington, DC. But just how progressive they are is brought into sharp focus by the 2013 National School Climate Survey compiled by the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN -- their 2015 survey is currently underway.) The GLSEN survey concluded that “Schools nationwide are hostile environments for a distressing number of LGBT students, the overwhelming majority of whom routinely hear anti-LGBT language and experience victimization and discrimination at school.” As is well known, LGBT youth are at significantly higher risk of suicide than their straight peers. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “A nationally representative study of adolescents in grades 7–12 found that lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth were more than twice as likely to have attempted suicide as their heterosexual peers. More studies are needed to better understand the risks for suicide among transgender youth. However, one study with 55 transgender youth found that about 25% reported suicide attempts.” Overall, according to the GLSEN survey, a significant majority of LGBT students heard homophobic remarks or slurs in school on a regular basis. A whopping 90.8% “reported that they felt distressed because of this language.” Having a GSA in school helps reduce prejudice and fear. But not enough LGBT students -- and even fewer straight
students -- join a GSA club, even if there is one at the school, which is the case only about half the time. The picture in Maryland as a whole is not so different from other states and far from a pretty one. At least 88% of Maryland students surveyed by GLSEN reported that they heard the word “gay” used in a negative way and 83% regularly heard homophobic remarks. (The worst offenders among the states surveyed were Georgia and Kentucky where 97% of LGBT students heard “gay” used negatively, with Indiana right behind them at 96%. Florida came in at 93%.) And even at open-minded Eastern, it wasn’t plain sailing at first. When the GSA was formed three years ago without “gay” in the club name -- it was called the Tolerance and Diversity Alliance -- there was still pushback. “I remember receiving some very strongly worded phone calls and emails voicing concern,” said Crouse, miming a telephone receiver held a good distance from her ear. “But regardless of the opposition, we moved forward with it.”
While sensitive to the concerns, Crouse stood firm. “We had to make clear this is a voluntary opportunity for a child that is seeking likeminded individuals to come together with, or to support, and it wasn’t something that was being thrust upon any member of the school community that didn’t want to be a part of it,” she said. “What we are asking is that you respect other people’s choice to get involved.” GSAs are more common in high schools, but Adelaide Harris and Sara Kleine, 8th grade members of Eastern Middle’s GSA, feel strongly that the earlier awareness starts, the better. “Both from personal experience and from talking to my friends, I know people who have been thinking about or questioning their sexual orientation or questioning their gender identity since elementary school,” said Harris, who always uses the collective acronym LGBTQ+. “Our age is really when a lot of people are figuring out who they are, and that includes sexual orientation,” said Kleine. “The average age of coming out now is 15. If you get
kids educated in elementary school, they are a lot less likely to see gay as a negative thing. Put it on the curriculum. Teach kids how to be open to gender expression.” The curriculum, of course, is another matter, and, unlike a voluntary GSA club, is mandatory. In Montgomery County, the health curriculum now includes education about sexual orientation, but the change did not come without a fight. Even sex education was opposed early on. “I was at the school where we taught it and they picketed outside the school,” recalled Crouse of a previous employment. As of January 2015, 22 states and the District of Columbia require public schools to teach sex education (20 of which also mandate HIV education.) But parents can choose to opt-out on behalf of their children. In addition, in states that have passed them, non-discrimination laws provide protection from discrimination to LGBT students in schools. However, some nondiscrimination laws protect only continued on page 29
France Awaits Vatican Word On Ambassador Said To Be Gay
Guam Strikes Down Ban On Same-Sex Marriage
HAGATNA, Guam (AP) - A federal judge has struck down Guam’s ban on gay marriage, making it the first U.S. territory to recognize samesex marriages. The Pacific Daily News reports (http://is.gd/SFYDlF) the decision from U.S. District Court Chief Judge Frances M. Tydingco-Gatewood takes effect at 8 a.m. Monday. Loretta M. Pangelinan and Kathleen M. Aguero filed the lawsuit in April after the 28-year-old women were denied a marriage license. They claimed the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco already legalized gay marriage, and Guam had to abide because it is in that court’s jurisdiction. The judge agreed, issuing his ruling shortly after the hearing on Friday morning local time.

the French Embassy to the Vatican from 2001-2005, and served as the French Foreign Ministry’s adviser on religious issues. French President Francois Hollande has refused to consider other candidates for the job, and the French official said Monday that Stefanini is still viewed as the best possible choice. Ambassadors accredited to the Holy See perform the same diplomatic activities as ambassadors elsewhere, representing their governments, relaying information, arranging official visits and, perhaps unique to the Vatican, attending the pope’s public Masses. Stephanie Nicot, president of the French rights group LGBT Federation, described Stefanini as a discreet man who has chosen not to politicize his sexual orientation. “It is really time that things change in the Catholic Church,” Nicot said. “It is inadmissible for a state to refuse a nomination of someone as competent as this for motives linked to his sexuality.” French Catholic newspaper La Croix has reported that the Vatican might see the nomination as a “provocation,” and the delayed response “implicitly resembles a
UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The U.N. human rights chief says in a new report that lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people are victims of “pervasive, violent abuse, harassment and discrimination” in all regions of the world and cites hundreds of haterelated killings. High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Raad al-Hussein said actions by some countries to reduce violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity since the last report in 2011 have been overshadowed by continuing human rights violations against these groups, too often perpetrated with impunity. The report to the U.N. Human Rights Council that was circulated Monday cites the murder of transsexual women in Uruguay and of black lesbian women in South Africa and the killing of a gay man in Chile by neo-Nazis who carved swastikas into his body.

PARIS (AP) - The French government is expecting the Vatican to decide within days whether to approve the nomination of a respected diplomat who is said to be gay as French ambassador to the Holy See. Paris is hoping that Laurent Stefanini wins approval five months after the French presidential palace submitted his nomination. The French government is awaiting a response via Vatican diplomatic channels within a week to 10 days, a French official told The Associated Press. The Vatican spokesman declined to comment. Gay rights groups have accused the Vatican of delaying a decision because of Stefanini’s sexual orientation. Such decisions normally take just a few weeks. The No. 2 official at the Vatican, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, said last week, “The dialogue is still open and we hope that it might conclude in a positive light.” It is the only thing the Vatican has said on the record about
the nomination. An approval would be unusual for the Vatican, which is dealing with growing advances for gay rights in many countries. The Vatican traditionally doesn’t approve ambassadors in “nontraditional” family situations, and Catholic teaching holds that gays should be treated with respect but that homosexual acts are “intrinsically disordered.” Pope Francis has signaled a change in tone toward the church’s reception of gays by saying “who am I to judge?” in reference to a priest said to be gay but looking for God. In an unusual move, Francis and Stefanini met last month in the Vatican hotel where Francis lives. Stefanini has not commented on widespread media reports in recent months asserting that he is gay. The French official said Stefanini is gay but has chosen not to come out publicly, and the French presidential palace has said only that his private life should not affect his appointment. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the subject publicly. Stefanini, 54, is currently chief of protocol at the French presidential palace, held a senior post at

Ambry Restaurant: Lecker und Frisch BY TIM HART
26 June 10, 2015
This truly is a German restaurant. Family owned and operated since 1981, specializing in German and American Cuisine, the Ambry is a great place to go for lunch or for dinner. On each and every occasion, bar none, my party and I have been greeted and seated by the lovely Holly who waited on us and made sure we enjoyed the visit. I found the service to be as good as the food. The Ambry is located on the southeast corner of Commercial Blvd and Bayview Drive, between the Intracoastal and Federal Highway. There is plenty of parking in front of the restaurant both metered and unmetered. I have mostly been going to the Ambry for lunch as of late. Months ago, I went and they had horseradish soup. It was INCREADIBLE!!! It was then I decided they needed to be featured in GUY magazine. On my latest visit, both my companion and I had items off of the daily special menu. My companion enjoyed the pork wings, three very ample pork drumsticks in a delicious barbeque sauce. I had six sausages with sauerkraut. Excellent. I became familiar with the Ambry years ago from their participation in the Oakland Park Oktoberfest. They are the food purveyor for the authentic German food offerings. At the Oktoberfest, I would finish each meal off with the delicious hot apple strudel and look forward to the next year’s festival. The restaurant is divided into a number of rooms. One room consists of a full bar with plenty of seating in the event you are waiting for a table or just want to enjoy a cocktail. Each little room in the restaurant has dining tables and character all its own. It is a neat place to enjoy a dinner or lunch and provides a lasting memory. The lunch menu contains interesting soup selections including the Goulash Soup (cup $5; bowl $7), Liver Dumpling ($7), and French Onion ($7). There are burger and sandwich se-

Cold appetizers include Beef Tartar ($16), Black Forest Ham ($15) and a Salad Bar ($10). Hot appetizers feature Baked Brie with Lingonberries ($10), Potato Pancakes ($7) and a Mixed Sausage Platter for 2 ($13). House specialties (which include the salad bar) are truly a German smorgasbord. Schweinebraten -roast pork with dumpling and red cabbage ($18), Sauerbraten – marinated beef roast and with an outstanding sweet and sour gravy, served with homemade noodles and red cabbage ($18) and Wiener Schnitzel – breaded and pan fried veal cutlet, served with lingonberries and home fried potatoes ($22). Steak and seafood are also available. An interesting final section is titled On the Wild Side and includes a Rehbraten Hbertus - roasted venison served with an outstanding gravy and homemade spaetzle and red cabbage ($30), New Zealand Spring Lamb ($34) and a Buffalo Steak ($36). Finish your evening off with a nightcap and a delicious desert. The restaurant is conveniently located and I am sure oft overlooked. Nevertheless, a must dine experience. about bathrooms and teacher gender is clearly a problem for the parents. Teens, too, are more open and accepting. A lot of the apparent “fuss” is met with a shrug. That’s why the first iteration of the Eastern GSA was called “Gay, Lesbian Or Whatever” -- GLOW. Not that LGBT students aren’t still at risk. Bullying is a still a pervasively dangerous problem. But in progressive environments like Montgomery County, prejudice is, well, just so last century. “I think if you are exposed to it at a young age, then it’s really a nonissue,” said Kleine. “I have two grandmothers that are partners. The first wedding I went to, it wasn’t technically legal at the time, but it was also two women.” Adds Harris with a note of incredulity: “My parents told me my aunt didn’t come out until she was 25 and that shocked me so much. They said some people used to never come out and they just lived their whole lives with this big secret hanging over their heads. That’s crazy, until you’re 25 just ignoring that part of your identity. We are so lucky to be youth in 2015!” Disclaimer: The Eastern Middle School GSA is not officially registered with the GSA Network which has no Maryland middle schools listed, so it is not 100% possible to verify it is the first.

against discrimination based on sexual orientation but not gender identity. Nationwide only 13 states and the District of Columbia have laws that protect transgender students from discrimination. Some individual school districts do have them even in states that do not. The Fairfax County Public School Board in Virginia, recently voted to include “gender identity” in its nondiscrimination policy, but the response by some parents was surprisingly hostile in what is usually a progressive Washington, DC bedroom community. “A boy who now says he identifies as a girl is now encroaching on my daughter’s privacy,” claimed one mother, Jeanette Hough. (A lot of this was about, yes bathrooms! Which last time we looked all had stalls; an indicator of just how irrational some parents were.) Others just under-estimated the openness of young people. “It’s tough enough for a kid to process subtraction at six years old much less ‘Oh my teacher used to be a man and now she’s a woman,’” complained Keith Apell, a father of two girls. If you talk to kids, especially as young as 6, you find them notably lacking in prejudice. Curious maybe. But not bigoted. Let’s face it, the fuss

workout program that will help you to develop a bigger, stronger chest. These exercises are basic and should be a part of every chest workout whether you are an advanced bodybuilder or an eager neophyte. Make sure to adhere to proper form and begin with three to four sets of 8 to 10 repetitions of each exercise. If you are performing bench presses for the first time where you are pressing a weight above your head, you may want to have a friend or trainer spot you. Barbell bench presses are great for building strength and mass. Lie on a flat bench with your feet on the floor and grasp the barbell with your hands slightly wider than shoulder width apart. Lift the bar off the rack and slowly lower it to mid-chest level (just above your “nips). Try not to let your elbows go down much past 90 degrees since this can unduly irritate your rotator cuff muscles. Pause, and then drive the bar
upward until your arms are almost locked and repeat. Incline dumbbell presses are superb for developing the upper chest. Lie on an incline bench set at a 15-30 degree incline. Hold a pair of dumbbells over your chest, palms facing forward, knuckles aimed at the ceiling. Slowly lower the dumbbells to the sides of your chest until you feel a nice stretch in your pecs. Pause, then drive the dumbbells straight upward until your arms are nearly locked. Repeat. Flies with dumbbells or cables are your basic shaping and sculpting exercises for chest. Lie on an incline bench set at a 15-30 degree incline. Hold a pair of dumbbells over your chest, palms facing inward, knuckles pointed toward the ceiling. Keeping your arms slightly bent, slowly lower the dumbbells in an arcing motion until your upper arms are parallel to the floor. Think of this motion like you are
hugging a big tree. Pause, return the dumbbells to starting position and repeat. Dumbbell pullovers are another favorite of mine. Grasp a dumbbell with both hands. To grip the weights, make a triangle with your index fingers and thumbs touching. Lie in a crossbench position with your shoulders and head on the bench, feet on the floor. Beginning with your arms in a locked out position above your chest, slowly lower the dumbbell behind your head until your elbows reach your forehead level, pause, then bring the dumbbell back to the starting position. sci-fi epic Hyde. Ari is concerned with keeping Larson (Billy Bob Thornton), the studio’s largest financier, happy and far away in Amarillo, Texas. Because the movie is heavily over-budget and in need of more cash, Ari is saddled with Travis (Haley Joel Osment), Larson’s troll-like “complete and utter…buffoon” of a son, while he is in Hollywood. Jealous of Vincent, Travis threatens to derail the entire project. Meanwhile, the other dudes are dealing with their own nightmares, including John’s sex tape making the rounds on the Internet, Turtle’s miscommunication with MMA fighter Ronda Rousey, Eric’s out of control libido and strong swimmers, and Ari’s

Plus, it’s been a while since a character was created to insult not one, but two, minority groups, and that seems to be the sole purpose of Lloyd (Rex Lee), Ari’s gay, Asian former assistant. The only thing that could possibly make Entourage the least bit entertaining or redeeming would be a catastrophic seismic event similar to the one in San Andreas.

ou don’t have to have ever seen the popular HBO series on which the big screen adaptation of Entourage (WB/ HBO) is based to dislike the movie. You can dislike it on its own merits or lack thereof.
