The week reflected back through fabulously funny eyes
A PERSONAL THOUGHT. Even though I wake this morning with sadness in my heart, at the same time I feel grateful and lucky to live in such a loving and caring community, not just my LGBTQ brothers and sisters, but the nationwide community. Thanks to tools like Facebook, which can be incredibly reassuring and powerful! I remember living in NYC on 9/11, and although at the time I had a tight knit group of friends that all lived near me. It was so scary because we didn’t have such access to the outside world and were trapped in the city, seeing nothing but morbid images all day, every day. Thank you all! THOUGHT FOR THE DAY. In a time where a lot of us feel powerless, go ahead and pay it forward, do a small good deed to let people of the world know that love and inclusion trumps hate any day! TIME TO LAUGH. So, when can we laugh again? I feel like I need permission to be my usually inappropriate self. IN RESPONSE: MICHAEL ELDER SAID, “Now, do it Now PLEASE! We need some inappropriate distraction.” PATRICK ROZADA POSTED, “Please write funny stuff bro!” ERIK VALENTIN RESPONDED, “Bring it on sweet cheeks.” SARAH TERESA REPLIED, “Make us laugh ADAM, we all need it!!! OY VEY FEELING FERKLEMPT. Off for a power-walk this morning. Just saying that makes me feel like Barbara, a Boynton-Beach woman in her 60s with slightly flabby “Hi Betty!” arms,” drives a Lincoln, browses the Festival Flea Market on weekends, and has a Chico’s loyalty reward card. PAM BONDI, THE B*TCH IS BACK! Hmmmmm, Anderson Cooper grilling Florida’s own Peg Bundy, waster of taxpayer money on frivolous lawsuits and Trump’s b*tch. Her job might be to uphold Florida’s Constitution, that is true, but the language and the tone that her office used was reprehensible. ROOF BLEACHING IS SO TRENDY NOW! My parents had their roof cleaned and bleached today, and it smells like God dropped a bottle of poppers from Heaven above outside. TAKING A COMMERICAL BREAK. It is time for me to get off the Internet tonight. I am finding myself fighting with ignorant morons. I try to take a deep breath and remember that I’m more educated and grew up with more of a loving heart that a lot of these people.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING... Random thoughts from social media and beyond this week Michael Sam posted on Instragram, “To my brothers and sisters of the #LGBTQ community please take the time to read this. If you have not already heard, there was a terrible shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando. It is not only a sad day for the #LGBTQ community, but for the American people. 49 people lost their lives because of a hateful coward with a gun. Let this hateful act of terror on the #LGBTQ community be a wake up call for America. Men and women of all races, ages, and sexual orientation are being slaughtered because of hate crimes. How many more must die from a hate crime? We need to create awareness for ALL to show that hate is not the foundation of our nation. Friends DO NOT let this coward put fear into your hearts! Let us all come together stronger than ever and let the world know that we will not be terrorized or bullied by the actions of hateful bigots. We are here to stay and fight not only for equality, but also for our very existence. To the victims’ love ones of this terrible crime, I and the entire #LGBTQ community in the world stands with you and mourns with you.
Pharrell Williams posted on Instragram, “I will never understand why people hate, no words could ever express how sad my heart feels about the tragedy in Orlando. My prayers go out to all the families who lost loved ones. #EqualityMeansEverydody
Andy Cohen about the Orlando shooting, “You go to a gay bar and for some people it’s the only safe place that they have,” he said. “A gay bar is about a safe place and a place to feel free and a place where you can be a part of a community. So the idea that these people who were there to be just with people they love and be safe and have fun, were killed for being who they are, it just kills me.”
Missy Elliott posted on twitter, “So devastating too hear about the loss of life in the Orlando shooting and those hospitalized. To the families going through this, prayers for strength.”
Lady Gaga said on Instragram, “Stand strong with your pride, it belongs to you. Love is opposite of hate. My sincerest mourning for the loss LGBTQ’s community is suffering today. I pray for gun control and a cultural revolution of kindness, for all people. We can’t divide in the face of evil, we must stick together, heal each other and we are all brothers and sisters.
a Shaquille O’Neal, who was a member of the Orlando Magic for four seasons tweeted, “My thoughts & prayers go out to my Orlando LGBT community brothers and sister during this senseless act of violence,” he wrote. “Love is Love!” June 16, 2016

Dance buddies, best friends, boyfriends, fiancés, girlfriends, bartenders, disc jockeys, mixers, lovers, hookups, “boos,” brothers, sisters, daughters, sons, roommates, co-workers, dancers, performers, artists, models, fundraisers, volunteers, Hispanic, straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning, we lost 49 of them. One night in a club at 2 am, the people who were the life of party, the last to go home, the fun bunch, were taken. The most horrid crime against our community has rattled us to the core. It has shaken our sense of security, reminded us that we still have to educate, explain and defend our choice to love. This will become one of the moments in history when we tell each other where we were, what we were doing, when we heard, BY who we knew, how MAURA close to the core we LANE were. We share not because of our need to be involved but because of our need to be comforted. Our community gathers immediately, connecting and communicating on what to do next, how to react, how to feel and most importantly how to help. On Sunday, my wife Ilene and I split the duties. As outgoing Board Chair of the Pride Center at Equality Park, she attended the vigil beautifully hosted by Pride Center COO Kristofer Fegenbush while I tended to the final Shop with Pride event at Westfield Mall. Over 500 people attended. At Westfield, we built bridges. Supporters and strangers to The Pride Center stopped to talk, express disbelief, and offer support for the community. We think we have been through this before, but we have not. This is a new horror and as the details unravel our emotions change. Thank god we are blessed to be different individuals and rich in our mixed reactions. We need the doers in a crisis to organize assistance. We need the compassionate to organize rallies and vigils. We rely on the skeptics to not accept first reports. We need the hopeful to keep us out of the closet. June is our month. This issue of Agenda was to be our proudest to date. Our intention was to celebrate accomplishments and provide you with the most up-to-date information on Wilton Manors Stonewall Pride. We had planned far in advance for unique perspectives on the parade and event history. We wanted you to have a hand held guide to everything Stonewall. We will deliver that promise and more. Your team at Agenda is devoted to you, centered in the storm and connected. We also consider you, our audience, on the team at Agenda. Wilton Manors is not just a physical address, we are the heart and soul of the LGBT community.” The Pride Center at Equality Park, in partnership with the City of Wilton Manors, held a public vigil on Sunday, June 12, 2016 to honor those whose lives were lost and those who were injured in the massacre. With more than 1,000 individuals in attendance, Mayor Gary Resnick, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, U.S. Representative Ted Deutch, Senator Chris Smith, Broward County Mayor Marty Kiar, Broward Sheriff Scott Israel, and local clergy members provided heartfelt and uplifting remarks. In addition, live vocal performances were conducted by the Gay Men’s Choir of South Florida. “I thank our friends and colleagues at the Pride Center for putting this vigil together. I also want to thank the law enforcement agencies particularly the Wilton Manors Police Department and the Broward Sheriff’s office for providing security during the event,” said Mayor Resnick. WILTON MANORS—It has been an unfathomable four days since the largest massacre in US history took place in the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. For days we have watched the growing list of mainly LGBT victims, murdered at the whim of a deranged killer whose motivation remains unclear still. For many of our community, the stunned reality of the situation is only now beginning to make itself known in our hearts, our minds, our souls. We walk through hours and then days thinking of little else than the tragedy that has hit us all— straights and gays alike. And it is in the same spirit of survival
that we head into the weekend ahead where a celebration of pride is about to be unveiled on Wilton Drive. There will be family picnics in the park, vendors on the street, and a parade down the Drive—all intended to celebrate our community’s strength under normal circumstances. But these times are anything but normal; these circumstances are anything but under our control. Like seaweed afloat upon the waves of life, we move now in an illusion of daily life; a suggestion that there is a world of normalcy somewhere ahead. The Mayor of Wilton Manors has issued a statement echoing what many of us are feeling. “Our community is deeply saddened by this deathly act of hatred and our thoughts and prayers remain with the victims, their friends and family members,” said Mayor Gary Resnick. “Now is a time for our community, and our neighboring communities to band together in unity.” There has been a rush of volunteers for Stonewall Pride; straight and gay allies that have offered to stand guard along the parade route and street festival. The organizers project that more people than ever will come to celebrate the day as a demonstration of their determination to spit back in the face of the madman who caused our deep mourning and for whom we search for forgiveness. “The situation is fluid, and evaluation is ongoing. Security and safety remains our top priority, said Mayor Resnick. “Throughout the planning process, the Wilton Manors

PRIDE In Yourself n
First and foremost, thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of the early Sunday morning horrific mass shooting at Pulse Nightclub, their families, many friends and all the people of Orlando. Before you read further, I ask you please take (another) moment and remember each of (at the time I am writing this article) 50 human beings whose lives were taken, the 53 who suffered injuries, their loved ones; family, friends and all who mourn. Because of Orlando, my thoughts this week By Rev. will center around each Joel of us. Slotnick In just under two weeks, it will be the 47th anniversary of Stonewall. What is Stonewall? Yes, this sounds like a foolish question, but if you were to ask many of today’s younger generation, they may not be able to answer a most basic question about it - the date: June 28th, 1969. To be quite frank, I don’t know if there aren’t any adults who may even know the year. Here is a little background from History.com. They can put it in words far better than I. “Just after 3 a.m., a police raid of the Stonewall Inn–a gay club located on New York City’s Christopher Street–turns violent as patrons and local sympathizers begin rioting against the police. Although the police were legally justified in raiding the club, which was serving liquor without a license among other violations, New York’s gay community had grown weary of the police department targeting gay clubs, a majority of which had already been closed. The crowd on the street watched quietly as Stonewall’s employees were arrested, but when three drag queens and a lesbian were forced into the paddy wagon, the crowd began throwing bottles at the police. The
officers were forced to take shelter inside the establishment, and two policemen were slightly injured before reinforcements arrived to disperse the mob. The protest, however, spilled over into the neighboring streets, and order was not restored until the deployment of New York’s riot police. The so-called Stonewall Riot was followed by several days of demonstrations in New York and was the impetus for the formation of the Gay Liberation Front as well as other gay, lesbian, and bisexual civil rights organizations. It is also regarded by many as history’s first major protest on behalf of equal rights for homosexuals.” So, there it is, how it all began. Decades forward, it’s June, 2016. The changes we have see over the years. In 1978, a domestic partnership ordinance passed in Broward County. In 2005, Massachusetts was the first US state to legalize same-gender marriage. In 2015, the Supreme Court ruled states cannot band same-gender marriage and it became the “law of the land” in the United States. In some places, we can freely walk handin-hand with the special person in our life. Transgender persons are most recently in the forefront. There have been several historic moments, but our lives are far from simple and far from accepted by all. Aside from the mass shooting, on Sunday, that evening I was reading my Facebook wall and found a website THOUGHTCATALOG.COM, and an article written by Jacob Geers. It was chock full of Twitter posts from a variety of anti-gay people praising the shootings. I was dumbfounded. But, it spoke volumes and put what seems to be our never-ending fight in true reality. This past Saturday, I had an interesting conversation with a friend of many years. We were talking about society, both in and out of the LGBT community. Conversation was about the shooting of 27 year old singer Christina Grimmie and other things in the general topic. The he came right out and asked me with a very serious look in his face: “Are you
scared that one day someone might....” and I cut him off finishing “Take my life for who I am? No. Absolutely not.” Our discussion continued about me being gay and in ministry, which isn’t something everyone likes or even feels is possible. We went on talking these very bi-weekly columns I write and my opinions. I further went on to say I am who I am. I am not a person who has ever really been shy about my views or opinions and it gets stronger as I do older. I refuse to be stifled. To me, doing so is giving in, and that I don’t do easily. People may not like what I have to say, but I try my best to do it in a way that isn’t nasty. In some instances I hope it educates some and makes a light go off in the heads of others. It breaks my heart to receive phone calls from people in their 60’s & 70’s telling me their wife or husband just died, that they have been living a different life all these years and they feel lost; they don’t know how to move forward living the life they were meant to live. It breaks my heart that persons my age or younger still have to hide who they are because of fear what may happen if they come out. Not having grown up with that fear or environment, I just shake my head in 2016 it is still an issue. As we near the anniversary of Stonewall and our individual Pride events, remember this: We all have to move forward, even in the most difficult of times. Live your life, love who you are, and be sure to Celebrate the Pride in yourself every day. I leave you with the words of Johann von Goethe: “If God had wanted me otherwise, He would have created me otherwise.”nn

Parade Floats:
2013
Sparkles and Shines BY KEVIN BROADY
n
Well, another year has gone by and the Pride season is upon us again. On Saturday June 18th, the vendors, the alcohol and the partygoers return to the drive like a yearly migration of birds when the seasons change, for their annual exhibition of showing their pride. Wilton Drive will transform itself into the place to be and be seen. You’ll find vendors selling their wares, bars selling their alcohol and attendees cruising up and down the drive. Since the event is held outside, most people will be dressed in normal street wear attire while others will be displaying their favorite holiday frock. The rainbow colors will be showing brightly as they dance and prance along their merry way. A good time will be had by most, if not all, unless Mother Nature decided to rear her ugly head and dampen the spirited event. Everyone will run for cover and pack themselves into the bars, like sardines in a can, while others will stand in the rain looking like a drowned rat. Either way thousands of people will attend
to view this annual event. One of the major events of the Stonewall festivities is the parade that starts at Fort Lauderdale High School area and ends at Five Points, short in distance but long on enthusiasm. Spectators will line the street to view the convertible cars filled with celebrities, the bands playing their music, the groups marching with a message and the floats filled with revelers throwing beads and more. At the 6th Street stage area, the parade will be hosted by none-other-than the comical styling of drag legend Daisy Deadpetals and long-time business owner Victor Zepka, giving their witty take on the parade entries. The two of them have been providing commentary on the event for 10 plus years. Annually the pride committee awards prizes to the best entries in different categories. One of them is “Best Float Presentation.” The last three years that category has been won by The Boardwalk Bar, “Were going for number four,” says Scott Laugherty, one of the owners of The Boardwalk. “We came

CARNAGE AND COMPASSION n
The past few days have been an endurance race between raw emotions and journalist integrity. The job of editor comes with a responsibility that requires that the “off” switch to be toggled when it feels as if very real human caring can compromise what should be unbiased reporting. And so BY it was this past week RICHARD as we were HACK pressed into action on Sunday to begin what amounted to hundreds of posts and interviews regarding the carnage that took place at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. It was sensitive turf, to be sure. We knew 12 of the dead—an extremely high number to absorb in one sitting. Yet, even as we coped with the grieving process, there were stories to written and guidance to be given to an LGBT community reeling from the largest massacre on US soil. Surely, nothing could get worse. Yet, it did. The fundamentalist Christian pastor of an Arizona church went on YouTube to vent his thoughts on the deaths of 49 individuals—some of who were 16

gay and some who were not. Just hours after America’s worst mass shooting came to an end, Steven Anderson, who preaches God’s goodness to the Faithful Word Baptist Church in suburban Phoenix, unleashed a sickening tirade in which he showed no compassion toward the slaughtered. Rather, downright hatred. ‘The good news is that there’s 50 less pedophiles in this world, because, you know, these homosexuals are a bunch of disgusting perverts and pedophiles,’ Anderson said in the video. “That’s who was a victim here, are a bunch of just disgusting homosexuals at a gay bar, OK?” Disgusting homosexuals at a gay bar? We needed to pause for a sanity check. Yes, this is America 2016, and this is a very real and presumably legitimate preacher bending the truth. Anderson, who has previously been outed for his rants against the President of the United States, transgender wonder Caitlyn Jenner and AIDS, brought out that tired book of Leviticus to justify the terror attack that took place at Orlando’s Pulse Nightclub. “The Bible says that homosexuals should be put to death… obviously it’s not right for somebody to just shoot up the place because that’s not going through the proper channels,” he said. “But these people all should have been killed anyway
but they should have been killed through the proper channels as in they should have been executed by a righteous government.” The migraine begins as the absurdity of the comments sink in and become painful. It’s not that we buy into the routine, any more than we believe telenovelas on Mexican TV. Certainly, fun to watch, but hardly real life.
Rev. Anderson, however, mean what he’s saying, and represents enough of a population base in this country to at least give us pause to reflect. Has America become so intolerant in the past decade to produce this kind of hatemongering? Sadly, the answer is yes. But equally as powerful was the response from Christians who weren’t buying into Anderson’s act.
“
Perhaps now that the world is united as one against this evil known as hate; perhaps now we will make a universal move toward compassion and gentility that all humans deserve. Perhaps now.
Anderson’s rant have now been viewed over 100,000 times and have received thousands of comments from viewers who blasted him for the absurdity of his words. “I am a Christian and I am mourning the loss of 50 of my fellow brothers,’ one user wrote. ‘I hope that people realize not all Christians are self-righteous hatemongers like this man. “I don’t believe anyone has the right to judge anyone else, and I’m so sorry for the murder of these people. I’m all so very sorry a man like this is representing Christians. Please know we are not all like this animal.” Anderson said that “the bad news” after the Pulse Nightclub massacre was that there would undoubtedly be a further push for gun control where ”lawabiding, normal Americans are not gonna be allowed to have guns for self-defence.” Gee, you think? “I’m sure that people are going to start attacking Bible-believing Christians now because of what this guy did,” he said. IF there is good news in all that has happened in that last few days it is to be found in the vigils that have grown around the globe. All over the world, people of all faiths have joined united against the inhumanity of it all.
It also draws our attention squarely on a Congress in Washington, DC that continues to allow this kind of Wild West insanity to prevail under the name of freedom. It’s the same officials that failed to act when nine people died in a South Carolina church, and nine others died in a community college in Oregon. The Congress did not act when 14 partiers were killed in California, or a dozen others murdered in a Naval yard in their own backyard. There were shooting sprees in a Colorado theater, an elementary school in Connecticut, another in Alabama, and still another at an Army base in Texas. Perhaps now while the carnage in Orlando is still fresh and the smell of blood is still there; perhaps now that the world is united as one against this evil known as hate; perhaps now we will make a universal move toward compassion and gentility that all humans deserve. Perhaps now.

Bars: Our Safe Haven Could be in Jeopardy
n
Are you hurting today – perhaps reeling from the senseless attack that took place in Orlando at the Pulse Nightclub over the weekend? If so, you wouldn’t be alone. Just tap on your Facebook feed and you’ll see countless posts from people throughout the LGBTQ rainbow expressing deep shock, sadness, and anger over the killings. Let’s be real. A rage filled, radicalized asshole, armed with an automatic assault weapon that should not have been legal to own walked into BY one of our KEVIN bars and deBROADY cided to take out as many people as he could. While we may never know his exact motivation, we can say with certainty that hate was part of the dynamic. The Pulse massacre stings because it could have been any one of us at that nightclub, and for friends and allies of the LGBTQ community, it could have been you too. But here is why this tragedy truly hurts so much for gays. The bars have always been considered a safe haven for us. For the most part, they were places that we could go to just be ourselves without 18

having to worry about being harassed, let alone killed. The next time you go to a bar, can you honestly say this incident won’t be on your mind? Not even just a little? We reached out to some of our local bar owners and asked them how they felt about their security and if they were going to make any changes. We had numerous responses back although several of them asked us not to reveal their new methods. With respect, we will not. Just be reassured, they are looking out for your safety. Scott Laughtry, one of the owners at The Boardwalk and Beefcake’s Grill commented, “We have always had security that monitored our parking lots and used inside when needed. However, we are changing our security drastically from our normal. We are adding an officer at the front door area that will do backpack, purse and ID checks. Then our outdoor security will be on continuous monitoring system and may be armed. We do not want to discourage anyone from coming to the bar. We just want everyone to be safe and feel secure.” Georgie’s Alibi/Monkey Bar posted on their Facebook Tuesday that they will be implementing the following measures: Increased presence of law-enforcement and security, no backpacks or large
bags will be allowed, small personal bags and purses will be subject to security screening, additional security measures may be taken to ensure the safety of our patrons. During this difficult time for our community, we ask for your help and understanding to ensure your safety. Our prayers and thoughts are with those that have been affected by the tragedy at Pulse in Orlando. Mark from Hunters Nightclub, “Obviously this is a concern for all the businesses on Wilton Drive, not just the bars. Yes, we have made some changes and are going to make some more changes in the near future. We have also reached out to the Wilton Manors police department for further direction. In this time of new awareness, change, we must be willing to understand that these and other business may increase their security procedures. They are doing this for our safety. Be appreciative. But we can also help if you see something, say something. It’s NOT okay to look the other way. It’s NOT okay to remain silent. And it’s NOT okay to pretend this happened to “someone else.” One day, perhaps in our lifetimes, we will see an end to bigotry. But for that to happen, we need to come together as brothers and sisters and say – enough! nn

Orlando Takes its Dark Place in LGBT History Month
n
It’s June, Pride time, which this year ushers in the waning months of the Obama presidency. And so I had been preparing to write a celebratory column about all the momentous progress for LGBT rights during Obama’s two terms, the obvious struggles against the anti-LGBT backlash notwithstanding. And then June 12 happened. 2am, Pulse, Orlando. Another, agonizingly predictable massacre in a country that blindly refuses to ban assault weapons. And so nothing has changed and the line between “terrorism” and “hate crime” is further blurred. The Pulse tragedy may have been the work of one depraved assassin, but the danger — for LGBT people, blacks, immigrants, women — none of it is over. Brock Turner demonstrated BY a sociopathic LINDA lack of empathy PENTZ and compassion toward a single person; Omar Mateen toward more than 100. Both embodied a culture of entitlement that gives permission to abuse and discard, maim or kill another human being without conscience. To ruin one life or to take many. It is modeled at the highest level by Donald Trump, who deems vilification a pastime, the demeaning of non-whites a birthright, and Orlando as a vindication of his Islamophobia. And so this will happen again, no matter how many well-meant PSAs spring up, no matter how many op-eds like this, or statements by

political leaders or civil rights and human rights groups. It will not change until we vote out of office the burrs who support the murderous National Rifle Association. And we change our gun laws. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center which monitors them, there were 892 active hate groups and 998 antigovernment groups operating in the U.S. in 2015. The Ku Klux Klan still tops that list with 190 active groups, with anti-LGBT/Other groups trailing closely behind at 184. That’s a lot of very dry tinder. June is not only Pride month but also LGBT History month. That history is now forever stained by the events in Orlando. The 2016 chapter will be a very dark blot indeed. But the rallying cry is to fight on. And so we must try to celebrate the recent remarkable achievements that will be logged into the Pride history books. In proclaiming June LGBT History Month, Obama lauded the “tireless dedication of advocates and allies who strive to forge a more inclusive society,” and noted that “they have spurred sweeping progress.” The pinnacle of that progress undoubtedly came last June with the victory of Obergefell v. Hodges, bringing marriage equality to every couple in every state and celebrated in rainbow floodlights that night by the White House itself. Two years before came the collapse of the key component of the Defense of Marriage Act; earlier, in September 2011, Obama repealed Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. In February 2015, the White House named Randy Berry as the
first Special Envoy for the Human Rights of LGBT Persons. Last August, Obama appointed the first openly transgender White House staffer in the person of Raffi Freedman-Gurspan. Last month, Obama’s openly gay selection for Army Secretary, Eric Fanning, finally got confirmed by the U.S. Senate. There are a few tasks remaining. We are still waiting for the Pentagon decision on whether or not to allow transgender service people to serve openly in the military. And the administration is yet to designate — as it said it might — the Stonewall Inn, already a National historic landmark, as a National Monument. If this happens, the famed Greenwich Village bar and an adjoining park would become the country’s first LGBT rights federal monument. The Inn, scene of a notorious raid and riot in 1969, is widely considered to be the birthplace of the LGBT rights movement in the U.S. As Rainbow History Project board chairman, Chuck Goldfarb noted: “It was the place where a diverse group of oppressed people fought back when they faced yet another attack on their dignity, respect, and physical well-being.” All of that was under siege again in Orlando on Sunday, when a safe place became a cemetery. nn

How the Rainbow History Project began Frustrated by failed attempts to identify archives and sources of information on gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered history in metropolitan Washington DC, Mark Meinke placed a notice in the Washington Blade for community discussion about the problem. On November 4, 2000 Charles Rose, Bruce Pennington, Jose Gutierrez, and James Crutchfield met with Meinke at the CyberStop Cafe, formerly at 1534 17th Street NW. The outcome of the discussions was to create the Rainbow History Project which would work to preserve our community’s memories. Their mission is to collect, preserve, and promote an active knowledge of the history, arts, and culture relevant to sexually diverse communities. Their work among our highest priority initial projects was the capturing of community members’ memories for an oral history project. Since that time, we have recorded countless oral histories, recognized many of our community pioneers, conducted research projects, public panel presentations, and amassed a collection of documents, manuscripts and photographs for permanent storage at the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. Now among those archives, the tragedy of Orlando will follow. Documenting the loss of life and the impact on the community, it will forever become a part of LGBTQ history.Thank goodness for their efforts and foresight. nn --Kevin Broady

CREEP OF THE WEEK
Omar Mateen BY D’ANNE WITOWSKI
n
No one on an FBI watch list should be able to easily buy a gun. No one should be allowed to buy a gun designed for the military to kill as many people as possible as quickly as possible. If you want to hold an AR-15 or something like it, join the f*cking Army. I know that gun nuts disagree. But I don’t have the patience or the time to argue with people who think guns are more important than human lives. America is the only country where mass shootings happen on a regular basis. We need gun control, damn it. I don’t want to hear another politician offer prayers for Orlando unless that prayer is, “Dear God, please guide my hand as I sign this gun control legislation.” Then again, if a pile of dead six-year-olds wasn’t enough to move the needle on gun control, then a pile of gays doesn’t stand a chance. Hearing “prayers” from people like Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, and Florida Gov. Rick Scott made me sick to my stomach. These are people who demonized LGBT people and families for political gain. Their prayers don’t mean sh*t, thanks. Ah, but there will be plenty of time to call them out. Right now the main villain in this 22

plot is Omar Mateen, the man who mowed down nearly 100 people, killing 49 of them (as of this writing) at Pulse in Orlando. A gay club. We know that he was racist and homophobic. We know that he beat up his first wife. We know that he worked as a security guard. We know he was on the FBI’s radar. We know that he bought his murder weapons easy peasy. Was he a terrorist? Well, undoubtably, yes. But was he specifically a “radical Islamic terrorist” (as if that somehow explains or makes more comprehensible the carnage he wrought)? It’s been reported that he called 911 to declare his allegiance with ISIS during the massacre. Was he gay? There are plenty of reports he was a regular at Pulse. That he’d sometimes get so drunk he had to be thrown out. That he messaged men on Grindr. That he was creepy. That he threatened men at Pulse with a knife once. How much is true at this stage is unknown. Since news outlets compete to get the latest piece of info out first, there’s often a lack of fact-checking. Eventually a more cohesive narrative will form. And no doubt conspiracy theorists will use any and all inconsistencies and
errors as proof that this never happened, that this is just an event fabricated by the government so they can take away our guns, just like they have with Sandy Hook. And people will say, “Well, it doesn’t matter if he was gay or not” just as they’ll say, “It doesn’t matter that the club was gay or not.” And these people will by and large not be gay. Because, of course it matters. This is not only the largest mass shooting in U.S. history, but it is also the largest mass killing of LGBT people in this country (and it’s not the first. Google “Upstairs Lounge arson attack 1973”). This mass murder can’t be easily summed up or explained. But no doubt the toxic culture of masculinity and gun fetishism we cultivate in this country and the long history of vilifying LGBT people helped pave the way for this to happen. And it’s a stark reminder that despite all of the gains that LGBT people have made, there is so much work left to do. Just because we can legally get married now doesn’t mean that our lives are as safe or as valued as our hetero friends and neighbors. Go out and hug each other. Be fierce, be proud, be woke. nn

OPINION
WHO IS?
Omar Mateen W
as he gay or bisexual? There have been speculations by people who knew Mateen that he might have been gay or bisexual. A male friend of his from 2006 when the two were in police academy together has stated that Mateen went to gay clubs with him, and that Mateen once expressed an interest in him; the friend refused because he had not come out yet. Club-goers also recalled Mateen dancing with another man. A Florida man came out after the shooting and said that he and Mateen had visited gay bars together. Mateen’s father Sidiqque denied the fact that his son was closeted, saying, “If he was gay, why would he do something like this?” Two days later, however, he appeared to back away from that assertion after his son’s alleged true or repressed sexual orientation became a point of inquiry as focus continued to grow on the topic with multiple witnesses emerging to give evidence on his son’s private activities going back at least 10 years, though he stated he himself didn’t believe his son was secretly homosexual or bisexual, saying, “I didn’t see any of it and I don’t believe that was the case. Sidiqque stated in an online video in his native language, Dari, “In this month of Ramadan, the gay and lesbian issue is something that God will punish,” though “the servants of God shouldn’t have anything to do with it.” One might wonder, beacuse of his father disapproval of the gay lifestyle, Mateen was fighting his gay tendencies and lashing out with is emotions. nn --- Kevin Broady

or the past few years that I’ve penned this column, I’ve kept it light and fluffy. It’s called The Frivolist after all, and my goal is to entertain with innocuous content that focuses on the fun stuff in life. I’ve written about movies, music, fashion and fitness here – all of which, in the grand scheme of things, are rather inconsequential.

THERE’S STILL LITTLE FOCUS ON MENTAL ILLNESS Sane people don’t walk into a nightclub with a capacity crowd in the middle of the night and open fire a la Tony Montana. Yet the three major talking points on both mainstream and social media following the massacre were gun control, terrorism by Muslim extremists and lax immigration laws – even though the latter is moot because the gunman, who I will not glorify by name, was born in the United States. We must start addressing our country’s epidemic of mental illness, no matter how difficult the conversation is, so we can effectively diagnose and treat it before it’s too late. That’s not to say that the other soapboxes are irrelevant – they aren’t – but mental illness played a part in this tragedy, and we can’t keep brushing it under the rug.
2
THERE ARE PEOPLE IN POWER IN THIS COUNTRY WHO WANT US DEAD It’s not hard to find an American member of the clergy who has at one time or another – maybe during a Sunday sermon or perhaps in a video that’s surfaced online – called for the condemnation and, in some cases, execution of LGBT people. They exist. Despite their seeming abundance, however, they’re relatively few in numbers, and they’re often viewed as fringe members of the religious community. Who we should be more concerned about, however, are the elected officials who we’ve put in power that are facilitating a deep-seated disdain and hatred toward LGBT people and other minority groups. People like the Trumps, Ted Cruzes and Dan Patricks of the world are a problem, and they cannot be absolved of their bloodstained rhetoric any longer. 26

Hard Truths the LGBT Community Must Address in the Wake of the Orlando Massacre THEN ORLANDO HAPPENED. Forty-nine of our LGBT “family” members were gunned down simply for being LGBT, along with another 50-plus injured, and in reflection of June 12’s early-morning events I didn’t think it appropriate to use this space to reveal the latest summer gadgets. Instead, I’m using my editorial allowance this time to dissect the aftermath of the largest mass

BITCHING ABOUT GUN CONTROL ON SOCIAL MEDIA IS USELESS If gun reform is important to you, push your issue with policy change. Updating your status about how this never would’ve happened if AR-15s and similar assault weapons weren’t readily available and legal to obtain makes zero difference – especially to those who have been and will be buried by their families because their bodies are full of bullets.
4
THE SILENCE OF YOUR NON-LGBT FRIENDS IS DEAFENING – BUT ALSO A WAKE-UP CALL You might have noticed something disturbing the day of and after the Pulse nightclub attack: Your LGBT friends and allies mourned this tragedy while much of the rest of your network either remained silent or skirted the issue of decades of villainizing our community. If they did have an opinion, it was about guns and Muslims and terrorists. This in itself should be a wake-up call to you that you know and love people who do not care if gay people are murdered in mass – and you need to start separating yourself from their deadly ideology.
5
IT DOESN’T GET BETTER – AND WE NEED TO STOP PRETENDING IT DOES Dan Savage’s rainbow-tinted “It Gets Better” approach to LGBT discrimination helped ease our pain a few years ago when LGBT suicide was a top story in the news cycle, and while that nonprofit marketing gimmick wasn’t even true back then, it’s practically nonexistent now. No matter how much progress we make in terms of legislation for our civil liberties, the conservative right and its radical cohorts continue to establish us as demons. As a result, there are proverbial
shooting in U.S. history and our loved ones’ reaction to it; the response by the media; and how we, as a unified people, must take a stand to tell those who oppress us that enough is enough. We are in this together until we are not, and that fate should never be up to another human being. Thus, here are a few bitter pills to swallow if you don’t want to be a statistic.
bounties on all our heads – and we need to get our heads out of our asses about it. We are Orlando; this could’ve happened to any one of us – and if we don’t wise/rise up, it will.
6
ALLOWING ANYONE TO MARGINALIZE YOU MUST END NOW You don’t need to apologize for who you are anymore. Like, ever. If somebody doesn’t like who you are because you’re gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender, that’s their problem, not yours. Stop apologizing to your relatives, friends, coworkers and pastors. You don’t owe anybody anything, but you should start demanding respect. Otherwise, cut them out of your life. Their political and religious views are poison, and it can kill you.
7
WE ALL NEED TO TAKE A COURSE ON HOW TO SURVIVE A MASS SHOOTING There’s no end in sight for America’s scourge of mass shootings. It will happen again and again and again. And until every assault weapon is melted down, you are in danger. If the government won’t protect you, you have to protect yourself – and step one is enrolling in a course on how to survive a mass shooting. They’re growing in abundance, because, well, that’s our reality now, and it’s in your best interest to be prepared. Your life may depend on it. Disturbing New Details of Orlando Police Behavior in Pulse Massacre ORLANDO—Disturbing new details emerged late Monday night as experts began to examine the tactics used by Orlando Police in handling the massacre at Pulse Nightclub that left 49 victims dead. Among new facts revealed during the continuing investigation was that the killer, Omar Mateen, did not die inside the club, but rather outside after police rammed a two-foot by three-foot hole in the wall about two feet above the ground, and Mateen came scrambling out along with trapped hostages. The killing of Mateen occurred three hours after his initial gun battle at the entrance to the club with an off-duty police officer, Adam Gruler, a member of OPD since 2001 who was working extra duty at Pulse. It was nearly three hours later before the Orlando SWAT team stormed the building and ended the massacre. The additional police officers and SWAT members involved included Lieut. Scott Smith, Sergeant Jeffrey Backhaus, Officers Timothy Stanley, Kevin Easterling, and Andrew Bishop, Sergeant James Parker, Detective Raul Rivas, Lieut. Jonathan Bigelow, plus Officers Ricardo Duenas and Michael Napolitano. It was Napolitano whose Kevlar helmet was hit in the shootout, effectively protecting the policeman. According to AP crime reporter Lisa Marie Pane, the decision by law enforcement to not enter Pulse immedi28

ately raises questions among experts in police tactics. The experts suggest that lessons learned from other mass shootings show that officers must get inside swiftly to stop the threat and save lives. “We live in a different world. And action beats inaction 100 percent of the time,” Chris Grollnek, an expert on active-shooter tactics and a retired police officer and SWAT team member, told Pane. The situation changed from an active-shooter scenario to a hostage situation once the killer made it into one of the bathrooms where patrons were hiding, authorities said. Experts say there’s a big difference between responding to a lone gunman and a shooter who has hostages. Orlando Police Chief John Mina said the presence of hostages required officers to “reevaluate, reassess what is happening and make sure all the pieces are in place.” From the restroom, Mateen called 911 and made statements pledging allegiance to the Islamic State. It is alleged that at that point the shooting stopped and hostage negotiators began talking with Mateen for the first time, Mina said. “We had a team of crisis negotiators that talked to the suspect, trying to get as much information as possible, what we could do to help resolve the situation ... He wasn’t asking a whole lot, and we were doing most of the asking,” Mina said. nn
Disney Donates $1 Million to One Orlando Fund
KISSIMMEE--Disney has given a $1 million cash commitment to the OneOrlando Fund, established by Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer to assist those affected by the tragic events in Orlando. Also, eligible donations from Disney employees will be matched dollar for dollar by Disney Employee Matching Gifts: A Program of The Walt Disney Company Foundation. “We are heartbroken by this tragedy and hope our commitment will help those in the community affected by this senseless act,” said Bob Chapek, chairman, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “With 74,000 Cast Members who call Orlando home, we mourn the loss of the victims and offer our condolences to their families, friends and loved ones.” OneOrlando Fund will provide funds and other services to individuals affected by the tragedy. The website for the new fund is www.oneorlando.org. Walt Disney World Resort has also been working in coordination with other Central Florida agencies and leaders to provide support to those in need. In coordination with OneBlood, cast members and other employees working at Walt Disney World Resort wishing to donate blood to help victims may donate at five designated locations across the resort property. INTERNATIONAL German Feds looking into Duesseldof bank account of gunman’s father
German federal investigators say they’re looking into a Duesseldorf bank account held by the father of the gunman who attacked an Orlando nightclub, and are in contact with their American counterparts. Germany’s Rheinischen Post reports Seddique Mateen posted the bank information in a 2013 video soliciting donations. The newspaper says the account is now closed and only received two payments, of 100 euros ($112) and 70 euros. Mateen, the father of Omar Mateen, has multiple videos online in which he chats about Afghan political issues in Farsi. He calls himself the “Afghan revolutionary president” but isn’t a known name in Afghanistan. Federal Criminal Police Office spokeswoman Barbara Huebner said Wednesday that her office was investigating to see whether there was any relevance to the Orlando case, but refused to give further details. nn
Complaint about gunman being investigated
The London-based security company that employed the Florida nightclub shooter says it received one complaint about him during his nine years of employment. The 2013 complaint prompted G4S to transfer Omar Mateen. It came from St. Lucie County Courthouse, where he was a security guard. The FBI then investigated Mateen. G4S spokesman Nigel Fairbrass said Wednesday that it was the only complaint about Mateen since he was hired in 2007. GS4 wouldn’t give details on the complaint. Former G4S employee Daniel Gilroy has told the New York Times and other news outlets that he had alerted G4S about Mateen’s behavior. G4S says it has no records of any complaints by Gilroy. Gilroy has called Mateen loud and profane and accused him of threatening violence. Fairbrass says of Gilrory: “We reached out to him and have since confirmed that he did, in fact, not file any formal complaint.” nn

Club Revere owner says gunman attempted to “Friend” him
Homeland Security wants to know more about gunman
The chairman of the U.S. Senate Homeland Security Committee is seeking information from the Florida security company that employed Omar Mateen, the Orlando nightclub gunman. Republican Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin says in a letter to G4S Secure Solutions that he wants to learn more about Mateen’s job responsibilities, security reviews and reported concerns raised by co-workers related to his behavior and possible connections to terrorism. Johnson said the company is not suspected of any wrongdoing in connection with the attack, but says it may have useful information to better identify and address homegrown extremism. Johnson’s committee is examining the June 12 attack at the Pulse nightclub and is considering legislative proposals to address homegrown extremism.
Top Democrat says we need alert system in place for gun purchases The top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee says he wants to explore the potential for a system that would trigger an alert when someone who was previously on a terrorism watch list wants to buy a gun. Rep. Adam Schiff of California says an alert would allow law enforcement officials to consider anew whether an investigation ought to be reopened to determine whether the person who had expressed “radical thoughts is at the point of taking those into action.” He spoke with reporters following a closed-door briefing on Capitol Hill by Obama administration officials about the investigation into the Orlando gunman. Schiff declined to provide details about the briefing conducted by FBI Director James Comey and Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson. But Schiff did say there is no clear answer yet on whether there were additional factors aside an allegiance to Islamic State militants that motivated the gunman, Omar Mateen. Rep. Mac Thornberry, the Texas Republican who chairs the House Armed Services Committee, said investigators are looking into everything that may have motivated the gunman.
The owner of another Orlando LGBT club says he got a Facebook friend request last week from the gunman in the Pulse nightclub shooting. WKMG-TV reports that Club Revere owner Michael Bass says he looked through Omar Mateen’s Facebook friend list and didn’t see anything that would relate to a LGBT club, so he rejected the friend request. He says he recognized Mateen after news of the Sunday shooting that left 49 people dead. The station says investigators from the Orlando Police Department and the FBI interviewed Bass about the contact. nn
Orlando Mayor uplifted by community turnout
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said he was uplifted by the way the community has come together during a citywide prayer service for the 49 people who were killed in a nightclub shooting over the weekend. More than a thousand people - including many clergy and local, state and national civic leaders - met Tuesday night at First Baptist Orlando to hold a vigil for the victims of the early Sunday morning shooting at the Pulse nightclub. Dyer said to the crowd: “We will not be defined by the act of a hate-filled killer. We will be defined by our love, compassion and our unity.” Dyer says officials are in the process of putting together an Orlando Family Assistance Center. It will open Wednesday at Camping World Stadium. Sunday’s shooting at the gay dance club ended when police killed gunman Omar Mateen. nn
DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE MOURNS LOSS OF ARMY RESERVE SOLDIER IN MASSACRE
Secretary Ash Carter has issued a statement about the death of a U.S. Army Reserve soldier in the massacre at a gay Florida nightclub, and says officials there support the people of Orlando and the LGBT community. Ash says Capt. Antonio Davon Brown served for nearly a decade to protect others - “the noblest thing a young person can do.” The statement says the Defense Department grieves with Brown’s families and all the loved ones affected by the shooting. It also says: “We stand with the people of Orlando and the nation’s LGBT community during this difficult time.” nn
Gunman’s ex-wife urges no rush to judgment
The ex-wife of the gunman who opened fire in a Florida gay nightclub has urged people not to quickly assign motive to the attack that left 49 dead. Sitora Yusufiy said in an interview Tuesday night on CNN that former husband Omar Mateen was unstable and prone to emotional outbursts while they were together but she never heard him express any radicalism. Yusufiy said she hadn’t talked to him for a while but wouldn’t be surprised to learn he was leading a double life and in deep internal conflict. “So, I just hope that people, without making rash judgments on one another, can truly understand that this is one insane person that did such a tragic thing,” she said. nn
Did gunman freguent Pulse Nightclub?
Investigators trying to find out what motivated nightclub killer Omar Mateen are casting a wide net. The FBI is checking reports that Mateen frequented a gay dance club in Orlando before going on a murderous rampage there. Investigators also are looking at whether his wife knew anything beforehand about the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history. The attack left Mateen and 49 victims dead. On Tuesday, a U.S. official said the FBI was looking into news reports quoting patrons of Pulse as saying Mateen frequented the nightspot and reached out to men on gay dating apps. The official wasn’t authorized to discuss the investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity. President Barack Obama said investigators had no information to suggest a foreign terrorist group directed the attack. nn nn

Vigils Held Across the Country Photos: WilsonModels (New York), huffingtonpost.com(Lady Gaga), James Dougherty (Colorado), NCPR(Pennsylvania), Adrees Latif/Reuters/Heavy.com (Orlando)
Vigils, rallies and marches are being held around the country Monday and later this week for the victims of the deadly attack at a gay nightclub in Orlando. Police in many areas have promised heightened security for the events, which come during Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month. Some of the events:
FLORIDA
In the city where the shooting happened, thousands of people gathered Monday evening for a vigil to support victims and survivors. Many in the crowd in downtown Orlando said they were inspired to attend because the Pulse nightclub, where the massacre occurred, played a huge role in their lives as gays and lesbians. “Pulse gave me confidence, made me realize I was normal and so much like everyone else,” said Cathleen Daus, a former employee at the club. The vigil was held on the lawn of the Dr. Phillips Center, the area’s main performing arts venue. It’s also the location of a makeshift memorial, where people have been leaving flowers, candles and notes for the victims. Several other Florida communities large and small also have events planned. In Fort Lauderdale, a 1,000 mourners and gay allies poured on the campus of the Pride Center at Equality Park on Sunday evening. Among those speaking of the vigil was U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL). In Miami, a gay community center offered grief counseling through Monday afternoon, with a prayer gathering and a town hall-style meeting planned for the evening.
NEW YORK
Thousands crowded the streets around the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan where large-scale gay rights activism got its start in 1969. Under banners heralding the upcoming Pride Week event, people held hands 36

and hugged. Some waved rainbow flags and others carried signs showing support for Orlando as they listened to a slew of elected officials, including New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio. Spectators watched from fire escapes and windows of nearby apartment buildings as chants of “love beats hate” rang from the crowd. At the end of the vigil, attendees held candles and some sobbed as the names of the victims were recited. Each name was met with the Spanish cry of “Presente!” from the crowd. Thomas Dougherty, 23, of Manhattan, said he came to the rally to feel united and connected. He said he had friends in Orlando who ordinarily could have been at Pulse and he spent a frantic Sunday tracking them down to make sure they were all OK. “Seeing everyone here makes me feel at home, makes me feel safe,” he said.
CALIFORNIA
The rainbow colors of the gay pride flag flew Monday on the side of the California Capitol and on the floor of the Senate - a first for the Senate, according to President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon, a Democrat. In Southern California, the Los Angeles LGBT Center has organized a rally and vigil outside City Hall on Monday evening, one of a number of events around the state. In San Francisco, home to one of the nation’s largest gay communities, police said more officers would be patrolling popular LGBT venues and local mosques in the weeks ahead. The city’s gay pride celebration and parade are set for June 25 and 26. Scott Wiener, who represents the Castro District on the city Board of Supervisors, said he intends to host a meeting this week to in-
volve owners of gay nightclubs, bars and restaurants in planning discussions with police. Tim Eicher, who co-owns four bars in the Castro, said he and the owners of other LGBT venues “are doing everything possible to ensure that we keep our employees and customers safe.”
VERMONT
Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders on Monday marched with hundreds of people during an event in Vermont honoring victims of the Orlando mass shooting. Sanders and his wife, Jane, participated in the march in downtown Burlington that ended at City Hall Park. Sanders spoke briefly, encouraging the crowd to help “create the kind of nation based on love that we all know we can become.” The Pride Center of Vermont organized the march and vigil.
RHODE ISLAND
About 1,000 people attended a candlelight vigil Monday night outside a gay nightclub in Providence, followed by a march to the Statehouse steps. With other vigils and memorials also scheduled around the state Monday and Tuesday and the Rhode Island Pride Festival expected to draw 40,000 people Saturday in Providence - police are planning to provide more officers, dogs and other security measures for the events. The head of the state police and members of the Providence Police Department met Monday with Pride Festival organizers and the owners of several gay bars. “They are nervous, like any other community that was targeted for violence,” State Police Superintendent Col. Steven O’Donnell said.
UNBREAKABLE ALASKA
The Alaska House of Representatives stood for a moment of silence Monday to honor the Orlando victims, at the request of Rep. Matt Claman, a Democrat. The Senate doesn’t have a floor session scheduled until Thursday.
COLORADO
Vigils were held around the state Monday, with one of the biggest in Denver’s Cheesman Park. Meanwhile, organizers of Denver’s PrideFest say next weekend’s festival will go ahead with tight security, including metal detectors and fences.
GEORGIA
More than two dozen human rights organizations have announced plans for a vigil and community gathering Tuesday night at Atlanta’s Center for Civil and Human Rights. The groups include gay rights organizations, the Islamic Speakers Bureau of Atlanta and the Anti-Defamation League.
IDAHO
A vigil was held Monday evening in Sandpoint, a small lakefront town in the north of the state, among other events this week. Chelsea Gaona Lincoln, an LGBT-rights activist who helped organize the vigils, urged the public to help protect the rights of Idaho’s gay community. Organizers of the ongoing Boise Pridefest, Idaho’s largest LGBT pride event, met with police Monday to talk security details and shift the route of the event’s upcoming parade away from the heart of downtown, for safety’s sake. On Sunday, just hours after learning of the Florida shooting, Pridefest organizers fielded an intimidating comment on the event’s Facebook page, director Rodney Busbee said. Organizers immediately reported the remark to authorities, Busbee said. “In the past, I’ve had people text me or post that that they were going to kill me,” Busbee said. “But that became a reality over the weekend.”
LOUISIANA
Gov. John Bel Edwards described the Orlando shooting victims as “our brothers and sisters” during a vigil Monday with Louisiana’s legislative leaders at the State Capitol in Baton Rouge. The Democratic governor and dozens of other politicians sang “Amazing Grace” together, and Edwards read a Bible passage. “There is no room for terror and hate,” he said. In New Orleans, dozens gathered Monday at a church near the French Quarter to pray
for the families and victims of the Orlando shooting. Clergy from a variety of faiths Episcopal, Catholic, Jewish, Sikh, Methodist and Muslim - read a passage of scripture or recited a prayer to help begin the healing from the effects of the weekend massacre. Stephanie Oshrin, 26, of New Orleans, quietly sat in a pew before the program started. “In a time like this, community is real important to me,” she said when asked why she decided to show up for the vigil. “I’m part of a community where there are not a lot of safe places and there’s a real sadness that comes when one of those places you think are safe is violated.”
MAINE
At least nine Maine communities are holding vigils to honor victims in the attack on a nightclub in Florida. Matt Moonen, executive director of EqualityMaine, said the events Monday evening “will enable us to come together to mourn those lost in Orlando.” Vigils were planned in Portland, Bangor, Auburn, Bar Harbor, Damariscotta, Hallowell, Farmington, Ellsworth and Machias. More are scheduled for later in the week.
MARYLAND
Baltimore Mayor Stephanie RawlingsBlake urged people at a vigil in the city Monday to stand together against hatred. “There are times like this when words seem insufficient because of the measure of hate it would take to have to do what they did to innocent people,” she said. “And then, I think the only way to combat that hate is not a ministry of words, but of presence. Just being here is speaking volumes about who we are as Baltimoreans. We stand together,” she said. “We are hoping this ministry reaches our brothers and sisters in Orlando so they know that they are not alone.” As the sun set over Baltimore, the crowd swelled well beyond the confines of a grassy lot where the vigil was held. People dressed in bright colors clutching rainbow flags and signs of support spilled into the intersection, choking the streets and the sidewalk.
MASSACHUSETTS
Hundreds of people gathered Monday night in Boston to pay tribute to the victims of the mass shooting. Many of them carried rainbow-colored flags and signs calling for peace. At times they held and comforted each other. Speakers addressed the crowd in both English and Spanish. Boston Mayor Martin Walsh and Gov. Charlie Baker attended the candlelight vigil at City Hall Plaza, which was organized by Walsh’s office.
NEVADA
Advocacy groups held a vigil Monday evening at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The organizations included advocates for immigrant students, LGBT people and survivors of sexual assault or domestic violence.
NEW MEXICO
Santa Fe Mayor Javier Gonzales announced plans for a public event honoring the shooting victims Monday on the Santa Fe Plaza, the landmark square that has served as the capital city’s central gathering spot for hundreds of years. A vigil also is planned in a park in Farmington, a mid-sized city near the Colorado border.
OHIO
Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley plans to attend a Monday night vigil at a downtown nightclub. Cranley, a Democrat, says he’s proud to stand in solidarity with LGBT people “and to let the world know that Cincinnati is an inclusive and welcoming city.”
OREGON
The Morrison Bridge in downtown Portland was being illuminated in rainbow colors Monday night. The bridge featured a similar display last year after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage. The rainbow colors had already been slated to return for the city’s annual Pride weekend, which starts Friday.
PENNSYLVANIA
Philadelphia’s LGBT community held an early evening vigil Monday outside City Hall in what organizers describe as an outpouring of “grief, love and solidarity for the victims in Orlando.” An evening march also is planned in the state capital, Harrisburg. A Wednesday night vigil is planned in front of the Delaware County Courthouse in Media, organized by a local Unitarian Universalist church and a group pushing gun regulations.
WASHINGTON, D.C.
A Muslim-American women’s group held a candlelight vigil Monday night in Dupont Circle, the hub of a neighborhood near downtown. Organizers say the goal is to stand together against anti-gay, anti-transgender and anti-Muslim bias. (AP) nn June 16, 2016

YOUR LIFE: AN OWNER’S MANUAL
The importance of expressing emotions
n
One of the many great things about being human is our ability to feel. Our thoughts and emotions help us navigate any situation that we are in. Many people don’t realize how emotions are closely linked to the body. Each emotion has a specific physiological response. Depending on the emotion felt will determine if your body reacts in a healthy or unhealthy way. The natural progression from perception to action is as follows: By whatever James perception Miller (a quick mental snapshot) we have about any situation determines our thoughts. Our thoughts then create the emotions we feel. Our emotions then direct our body to respond. When we aren’t fully aware of what is happening we become reactive and respond in unhealthy ways. When we have more insight into our perception and the emotions we are feeling it gives us insight into the health benefits our body is experiencing. We all grew up hearing that
real men don’t cry. For some reason that has been instilled in many men. If a boy is found crying he is teased by others or is seen as weak. Many people don’t realize the physiological response from crying. Have you ever cried and thought, “I feel so much better now?” When we cry the toxins in our body are released through tears. Any stress hormones that were secreted during an event, that weren’t purged naturally from our body, will be released through our tears. Naturally, you will feel better after a good cry because your body has literally purged the toxins and stress hormones that you no longer need. There is a great physiological reaction with happiness; specifically when it’s demonstrated though laughter. When we laugh our body creates Natural-Killer Cells (NKC). These cells attack any cancer or tumorous cells that may be in our body. The old saying, “Laugher is the best medicine,” is actually true. There is a direct correlation between people who consistently laugh and living a long life. Laughter also helps reduce stress, strengthens the heart, and releases endorphins, the “feel-good” chemicals. We’ve all heard of the Fight or Flight Response.
Based on the snapshot perception we have determines if we are in danger, we must defend ourselves, or flee. The emotions that accompany each of those actions release certain chemicals in our body which helps us achieve whichever response we feel is best. Anger is used to defend ourselves in that moment. However, what happens when the situation is over and we are still angry? When a person holds on to anger it can become a lifestyle full of bitterness. Bitterness translates to a physiological response of weakening and compromising one’s immune system. It even, over time, can make the person appear less physically attractive. Who wants that? These are only a few examples of how your emotions are linked with a physiological response. Remember, to be a real man, one must express all emotions in a healthy way. These emotions purge the body of all toxins and allows him to be healthier and live longer than those who repress their emotions and don’t use linked physiological responses. You have emotions for a reason, when you understand how your emotions affect your body, you get to determine if it’s a healthy expression or not. nn

BRAINY QUOTES FOR OUR LOVE LIFE
Y
ou can search throughout the entire universe for someone who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself, but when that person is not to be found anywhere. You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection. Friends can help each other. A true friend is someone who lets you have total freedom to be yourself - and especially to feel. Or, not feel. Whatever you happen to be feeling at the moment is fine with them. That’s what real love amounts to - letting a person be what he really is. Five brainy quotes with love.

ANN LANDERS Love is friendship that has caught fire. It is quiet understanding, mutual confidence, sharing and forgiving. It is loyalty through good and bad times. It settles for less than perfection and makes allowances for human weaknesses. MOTHER TERESA Let us always meet each other with smile, for the smile is the beginning of love. ARISTOTLE Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear. JESUS CHRIST A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. When you look for love, you will not find it. Often you may discover it by going for a walk and taking the moment to look at the sky, to listen to the birds singing and the whistle of a wind; sometimes all is needed is a little time and effort spent, which will, eventually, be rewarded. nn ---Kevin Broady
