Arkansas Ruling Throws New Wrinkle In Gay Marriage Debate LITTLE ROCK, AR (AP) - A judge’s ruling that Arkansas must recognize more than 500 same-sex marriages that were performed in state last year throws a new wrinkle in a legal fight that’s been sitting before the state Supreme Court for more than a year now. It also offers a preview of the questions the state will face if either the Arkansas or U.S Supreme Court legalize gay marriage later this year. Pulaski County Circuit Judge Wendell Griffen’s decision ordering the state to recognize the licenses that were issued to same-sex couples during a weeklong period last year is far more limited and less dramatic than the decision that temporarily legalized gay marriage. “With shameless disrespect for fundamental fairness and equality, (Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration Director Larry Walther) insists on treating the marriages of same-sex couples who received marriage licenses between May 9 and May 15 as ‘void from inception as a matter of law,’” Griffen wrote in his ruling. Griffen’s ruling wasn’t much of a surprise. An ordained Baptist minister, Griffen presided over some of the
same-sex wedding ceremonies at the courthouse after the marriage ban was struck down last year. Though he didn’t weigh in on the constitutionality of gay marriage, Griffen’s order called the decision striking down the marriage ban “courageous and plainly stated.” Judge Chris Piazza’s ruling last year striking down the voter-approved gay marriage ban and related state laws created a rush to local courthouses by same-sex couples eager to make their unions official. A day before Griffen issued his ruling, attorneys recounted the dizzying days and legal wrangling that followed Piazza’s May 2014 ruling. “This was definitely a very confusing time,” Assistant Attorney General Colin Jorgensen told Griffen last week. Griffen’s order is unlikely to create the same level of confusion, since it’s limited to the couples who were married in the window between Piazza’s ruling and the state Supreme Court putting a halt to gay marriages while they considered the state’s appeal. And his ruling is unlikely to create the same dramatic rush of couples to file new tax forms, sign up for each other’s state insurance policies or even divorce, all of which are allowed by the state recognizing the marriages. The ruling offers gay couples at least an incremental victory after seeing the fight over same-sex marriage stall before the state Supreme Court months after the case was argued before justices. The reason for the delay - a dispute over which justices should hear the case - has been resolved and justices have rejected an
effort for a new round of oral arguments. But justices have given no indication when they’ll rule. They could get beaten to the punch by the U.S. Supreme Court, which is expected to rule this month on whether gay marriage should be legal nationwide. Griffen’s case touches on some of the same issues the state will face if either court strikes down gay marriage bans on matters ranging from birth certificates to custody disputes. Whether the state will have to address those questions now remains to be seen. Attorney General Leslie Rutledge, a Republican who has vowed to defend the state’s gay marriage ban, has stopped short of saying whether she’ll seek a stay of Griffen’s order. But the attorney for the two couples who sued the state over the licenses said the ruling at least provides some certainty after more than a year of living in limbo. “They finally got some major progress they’ve been waiting so long for,” attorney Cheryl Maples said. “They’ve been married over a year now and as of right now they’re really married.”
Gay Rights Are Not Civil Rights: Republican Presidential Candidate Ben Carson
Gay rights are not civil rights according to Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson has said he doesn’t believe gay rights are civil rights. The one-time pediatric neurosurgeon has previously said that being gay is a choice. He used sex between men in prison as an example. He said: “Because a lot of people who go into prison go into prison straight and when they come out, they’re gay. So, did something happen while they were in there? Ask yourself that question.” In an interview with Fox News’ Special Report with Bret Bair, he was asked why he thought his comments has provoked such a reaction, he said: “They saw that as the opportunity to finally knock this guy out and they thought they had done it. Stick a fork in him, he’s gone – they were jubilant. “And the whole homosexuality thing, I would just summarize it by saying I would love for the gay community to answer this question for me – what position can a
person take who has absolutely no animosity towards gay people, but believes in traditional marriage that would be satisfactory to them. I’m very happy to compromise, but I haven’t heard an answer yet.” Asked if he regretted or had apologized for his words, he said: “I came out and said that was a boneheaded statement, and I shouldn’t have allowed my emotions to get into it. “I was a little bit irritated that they were equating the whole issue with the Civil Rights movement. Because, quite frankly, I didn’t remember any times when there were signs up that says, you know, ‘everybody else here and gay people have to drink at this fountain.’” Carson was put on The Southern Poverty Law Center’s Extremist Watch List for comparing homosexuality to bestiality and paedophilia.
Gov. Abbott Signs ‘Pastor Protection’ Bill Into Law
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has signed a “pastor protection” law that comes ahead of an impending U.S. Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage. Abbott said Thursday he was proud to sign the bill, which allows clergy members to refuse officiating marriages that violate their religious beliefs. Gay rights groups say pastors already have those rights and didn’t oppose the measure. Unlike in other states this year, Texas didn’t pass contentious laws aimed at opposing same-sex marriage. One divisive proposal sought to defy the Supreme Court if gay marriage is legalized this summer. But that effort fizzled and Republicans settled for resolutions that reaffirmed their belief of marriage being between a man and a woman. Abbott said religious leaders must be secure in knowing that religious freedom is beyond government’s reach.

North Carolina’s Religious-Exemption Gay Marriage Bill Now Law
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A measure allowing some court officials to refuse to perform gay marriage responsibilities because of their religious beliefs has become law in North Carolina. The North Carolina House voted Thursday to override a veto of the measure that Republican Gov. Pat McCrory had earlier vetoed. The Senate voted to do the same a week ago. Thursday’s House vote was just over the three-fifths majority needed. The law means some register of deeds workers who assemble licenses and magistrates to solemnize civil marriages can decide to stop performing all marriages if they hold a “sincerely held religious objection.” McCrory had said no one who takes a government oath should be allowed to avoid performing duties required by that oath. Before North Carolina, only Utah had passed such a similar exemption, earlier this year.
Most Americans Expect Supreme Court To OK Gay Marriage
7
NEW YORK (AP) - Nearly twothirds of Americans expect the Supreme Court to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide when it rules on the issue within the next few weeks, according to a new poll. Only 25 percent expect the high court to leave existing state bans on gay marriage intact, while 65 percent expect the bans to be overturned, according to the poll conducted by the nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute. Its nationwide survey of 1,009 adults was conducted from June 3 to June 7. Mirroring the findings of several other recent national polls, the new survey found 55 percent of Americans in favor of allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry legally, and 37 percent opposed. Among those who oppose samesex marriage, 72 percent say the decision about its legality should be made at the state level. Among those who favor same-sex marriage, 59 percent say the issue should be decided at the national level. At the moment, samesex marriages are allowed in 36 states. The survey found sharp divisions over same-sex marriage along religious lines. Majorities of religiously unaffiliated Americans (79 percent), white mainline Protestants (60 percent) and Catholics (58 percent) favor allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry. But gay marriage was supported by only
29 percent of white evangelical Protestants and 35 percent of nonwhite Protestants. The survey also asked about perceptions of discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Threequarters of Democrats, 61 percent of independents and 50 percent of Republicans said there is a lot of discrimination against transgender people. Overall, 69 percent of Americans including 65 percent of Republicans and 60 percent of white evangelical Protestants - said they favored laws that would protect lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people against discrimination in jobs, public accommodations and housing. And 60 percent of Americans opposed allowing small business owners to refuse service to gays and lesbians, even if it violates their religious beliefs. This opposition included 64 percent of Catholics, 63 percent of nonwhite Protestants and 59 percent of white mainline Protestants. Among white evangelical Protestants, 51 percent supported allowing small business owners to refuse service to gays and lesbians on religious grounds. According to the survey, 65 percent of Americans report having a close friend or family member who is gay or lesbian. Only 11 percent reported having a close friend or family member who is transgender. The survey consisted of telephone interviews - half conducted on cellphones - among a random sample of adults. The research institute said the margin of error for the survey was plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.

LANSING, MI (AP) - Faithbased agencies with state contracts can refuse to participate in adoption referrals that violate their beliefs, the Michigan Senate voted Wednesday despite objections that the legislation would permit discrimination against gay couples. The Republican-backed bills, approved 26-12 almost entirely along party lines, went back to the House because minor changes were made. The Senate majority leader said he expected the House to send the bills later Wednesday to Gov. Rick Snyder, who has expressed concerns about the measures. Supporters said the legislation codifies the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ existing practice for private agencies with child-placing contracts. Agencies with religious objections to a prospective adoption would have to refer an applicant to another agency. Opponents said the bills ignore children’s best interests and legalize discrimination. Snyder, a Republican, has said the legislation could lead to lawsuits but has not said whether he would sign or veto it. Senators on both sides of the issue spoke passionately, with some recounting their experiences as an adopted

child or as an adoptive parent. Democrats likened the bills to the recently enacted religious objections law in Indiana that had to be softened because of a strong backlash over the possibility of LGBT discrimination. “Sexual orientation doesn’t have any correlation with quality of parenting or the ability to provide safe, stable, loving home to a child,” said Sen. Coleman Young II, a Detroit Democrat. Majority Republicans said concerns that the legislation would keep kids from being adopted are unfounded, saying faith-based agencies account for a quarter of all adoption and foster care providers. “We just codified what has been going on for the last five decades, that faith-based agencies are allowed to exercise their religious freedom in placing,” Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof, a West Olive Republican, said. Snyder spokeswoman Sara Wurfel said he would “closely” review the bills “through the lens of what will ensure that we are taking care of most Michigan children and matching them with their forever families.”

breast implant surgery because of her gender identity. WJLA-TV reported Wednesday Alexa Rodriguez said she was examined by a doctor there and told she was ready for surgery. But after getting approval for coverage from her insurance company, Rodriguez says a hospital employee told her they were not taking transgender females. Rodriguez has filed a discrimination complaint with the District of Columbia Office of Human Rights. The hospital said in a statement Medstar does not discriminate and there is no policy on assisting with gender transition, but the service is currently not offered. Attorney Brian Markovitz says that policy could be a breach of the D.C. Human Rights Act which protects against discrimination.”

Pro-Gay Candidate Jeb Bush Declares He’s Running For President
MIAMI (AP) — Vowing to win the Republican presidential nomination on his own merits, Jeb Bush launched a White House bid months in the making this week with a promise to stay true to his beliefs — easier said than done in a bristling primary contest where his conservative credentials will be sharply challenged. “Not a one of us deserves the job by right of resume, party, seniority, family, or family narrative. It’s nobody’s turn,” Bush said, confronting critics who suggest he simply seeks to inherit the office already held by his father and brother. “It’s everybody’s test, and it’s wide open — exactly as a contest for president should be.” Bush sought to turn the prime argument against his candidacy on its head, casting himself as the true Washington outsider while lashing out at competitors in both parties as being part of the problem. He opened his campaign at a rally near his south Florida home at Miami Dade College, an institution with a large and diverse student body that symbolizes the nation he seeks to lead. “The presidency should not be passed on from one liberal to the next,” he
declared in a jab at Democratic favorite Hillary Rodham Clinton. And he said: “We are not going to clean up the mess in Washington by electing the people who either helped create it or have proven incapable of fixing it.” That was an indirect but unmistakable swipe at Republican presidential rivals in the Senate. Among them is his political protege, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who welcomed Bush into the 2016 contest earlier in the day. Bush enters a 2016 Republican contest that will test both his vision of conservatism and his ability to distance himself from family. Neither his father, former President George H.W. Bush, nor his brother, former President George W. Bush, attended Monday’s announcement. The family was represented instead by Jeb Bush’s mother and former first lady, Barbara Bush, who once said that the country didn’t need yet another Bush as president, and by his son George P. Bush, recently elected Texas land commissioner. Before the event, the Bush campaign came out with a new logo — Jeb! — that conspicuously leaves out the Bush surname. Bush, whose wife is Mexican-born, addressed the packed college arena in English and Spanish, an unusual twist for a political speech aimed at a national audience. “In any language, my message will be an optimistic one because I am certain that we can make the decades just ahead the greatest time ever to be alive in this
world,” he said. “I will campaign as I would serve, going everywhere, speaking to everyone, keeping my word, facing the issues without flinching,” In the past six months, Bush has made clear he will remain committed to his core beliefs in the campaign to come — even if his positions on immigration and education standards are deeply unpopular among the conservative base of the party that plays an outsized role in the GOP primaries. Tea party leader Mark Meckler on Monday said Bush’s positions on education and immigration are “a nonstarter with many conservatives.” “There are two political dynasties eyeing 2016,” said Meckler, a co-founder of the Tea Party Patriots, one of the movement’s largest organizations, and now leader of Citizens for Self-Governance. “And before conservatives try to beat Hillary, they first need to beat Bush.” Yet a defiant Bush has showed little willingness to placate his party’s right wing. Instead, he aimed his message on Monday at the broader swath of the electorate that will ultimately decide the November 2016 general election. Minorities including LGBT voters have fueled Democratic victories in the last two presidential elections.

Rare Bacteria Returns To Florida Beaches And Pools
JERUSALEM (AP) - Thousands of bare-chested muscular men, drag queens in heavy makeup and high heels, women in colorful balloon costumes and others partied at Tel Aviv’s annual gay pride parade on Friday, the largest event of its kind in the region. Well over 100,000 people were participating in the parade, police said, while Israeli media put the number at 180,000. The event also drew thousands of people from around the world. Large sections of Tel Aviv were shut for traffic and loud music blasted along the parade’s route. Streets were packed thick with people waving rainbow flags and dancing. The theme of this year’s parade, which was the city’s biggest ever, was “Tel Aviv loves all genders.” Among the visitors was Conchita Wurst, the bearded Austrian cross-dresser who won last year’s Eurovision song contest. “There are just beautiful people here,” Wurst told Israel’s Channel 2 TV. Rafael Anibal from Madrid said it was an “amazing party.” “I have been to many gay pride parades around the world and this is one of the best,” he added. A man dressed in a big white bow tie and sleeveless vest, who gave his name as Matteo Zakari, visited from Poland. He
said “the people are amazing, the weather is amazing, I love Tel Aviv. The music is some of the best in the world.” Israel has emerged as one of the world’s most gay-friendly travel destinations in recent years, in sharp contrast to the rest of the Middle East where gay culture is not tolerated and gays are persecuted and even killed. Across the rest of the Mideast, gay and lesbian relationships are mostly taboo. The pervasiveness of religion in everyday life, along with strict cultural norms, plays a major factor in that. Same-sex relations are punishable by death in Iran, Mauritania, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Yemen. Gays serve openly in Israel’s military and parliament, and many popular artists and entertainers are gay. However, leaders of the gay community say Israel still has far to go in promoting equality. There is no gay marriage in Israel officially, primarily because there is no civil marriage of any kind. All Jewish weddings must be conducted through the Jewish rabbinate, which considers homosexuality a sin and a violation of Jewish law. But the state recognizes same-sex couples who marry abroad. Among most Palestinians, gays tend to be secretive about their social lives and some have crossed into Israel to live safely. In the West Bank, a 1951 Jordanian law banning homosexual acts remains in effect, as does a ban in Gaza passed by British authorities in 1936.

TALLAHASSEE--The Florida Department of Health has issued warnings that announce that the bacteria known as Vibrio vulnificus may be waiting for your next visit to public pools and local beaches. While rare, the bacteria has been linked to several deaths across the state. Health officials said there have been eight known cases and two fatalities in Florida so far this year. According to CBS News, when the bacteria enters the body through an open wound, it can cause infections that may lead to skin breakdown and ulcers similar to “flesh-eating” symptoms. While healthy people typically experience only mild symptoms, those with a weakened immune system, particularly people living with chronic liver disease and HIV, are at a higher risk for severe complications. The bacterium can invade the bloodstream and cause fever, chills, blistering skin lesions, septic shock, and death. To avoid infections, you should not enter the water with fresh scraps or wounds and should wear the proper footwear on the beach to prevent cuts from shells and rocks. It is particularly prevalent in water above 80 degrees.

TALLAHASSEE, FL (AP) - A nearly four-decade-old law banning gays from adopting children, which hasn’t been enforced in five years, will come off Florida’s books July 1, but Gov. Rick Scott still wants private, religious-based adoption agencies to be able to turn gay couples away. Scott signed a bill Thursday that removes the adoption ban enacted in the days when entertainer Anita Bryant crusaded against gays. It is part of a larger bill that promotes adoption, and striking the language simply reflects reality after a judge found the ban unconstitutional five years ago. “This is incredibly personal for me because I was just a young man when Anita Bryant was pursuing her actions against the gay community,” said Rep. David Richardson, Florida’s first openly gay lawmaker and the Miami Beach Democrat who amended the adoption bill to remove the gay ban. “It was very disturbing to me to watch it and to see how much hate was being promoted.” But Thursday he was celebrating. “Who would have guessed I would be the one here to repeal a law that so personally affected me?” he said. Still, some conservative Republicans strongly opposed removing the ban from law, saying there were still legal avenues available that could allow it to be enforced. There was also a failed effort to separately protect private adoption agencies to refuse to help gays adopt based on religious and moral grounds. Scott wants lawmakers to take it up again during their next regular session in January. “Florida’s laws must protect the free exercise of religious liberty and faith while protecting Floridians from illegal discrimination. These are not, and never should be, mutually exclusive pursuits,” Scott wrote in a letter explaining his decision to sign the bill. The president of the group that led the effort to put a gay marriage ban in

the state constitution, which has since been declared unconstitutional, said he was disappointed Scott signed the bill. “The most disturbing part about it is the decision is unprincipled capitulation of the rule of law,” said John Stemberger of the Florida Family Policy Council, who added that challenge to the ban never had a hearing before the state Supreme Court. The bill signing came on the same day Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder signed a bill that allows faith-based adoption agencies to turn away gays who want to adopt. Florida gay rights advocates applauded Scott’s action. “We are thrilled that this ugly chapter in Florida’s history has been closed for good. Thousands upon thousands of children live with the security and permanency of a forever home because the courts struck down the ban. Now the lingering insult has been erased as well,” said Nadine Smith, CEO of Equality Florida.

NUTRITION AFTER 40 BY ANDY KRESS
New Study: Diet Drinks Aren’t So Bad After All Water, water, water! Every nutritionist, fitness enthusiast and dietician will tell you water is the best ingredient for any weight loss program. And since the body is made up of 70 to 80% of the stuff, this would only come as a natural answer. Yet, as wonderful as water is, it is also very tasteless to the palate, hindering its appeal. This bland taste makes it a tough sell for most people who need to consumer about 100 ounces of it per day. There is still hope for those of us who need a bit of flavor in our liquids. New studies have recently shown that using a low-calorie sweetened drink may increase weight loss, more than just using water alone. Conducted by researchers at Philadelphia’s Temple University and Denver’s University of Colorado, the 12-week study was a randomized-controlled trial (RCT), which is the most respected and robust study design in research. The study compared one group of people who drank at least 24 ounces of low-calorie sweetened beverages each day and another group who drank at least 24 ounces of water, and no beverages with low-calorie sweeteners. Both groups participated in the same weight loss intervention program, and both had similar physical activity levels. The results of the study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, revealed that on average, participants drinking the diet beverages lost 13 pounds over the 12-week period, compared to only nine pounds by those in the water group. Additionally, participants drinking diet beverages reported being less hungry and even reduced their total and LDL cholesterol more than the participants who did not consume the diet drinks. Lowering your LDL cholesterol levels can have a positive impact on keeping away those unwanted pounds. Feeling less hungry during days of diminished calories as you strive to hit your goal weight is a huge bonus. Sign me and all my
fitness clients up please! Who doesn’t love to be satiated throughout the day? Being hungry throughout the day is what probably packed on those extra pounds in the first place. But to be able to cure your hunger and increase your weight loss with just a few sips from a low-calorie sweetened beverage may sound too easy. Never forget, however, that water is still one of your best friends between each of those low-calorie sweetened beverages. Also keeping an active life style is important no matter what you’re drinking, and especially important for those who are trying to shed a few extra inches along the way. Be sure to incorporate exercise, or an active hobby into your weekly routine. All types of lifestyles need movement--even more so as we age. Staying completely hydrated throughout life will also aid in decreasing wrinkles and will keep everyone trying to guess your age. Throw in a well-balanced diet along with your moderate low-calorie sweetened beverage consumption and you are on a roll. Remember, good fuel gets good results. You may remember that previous studies have suggested the artificial sweeteners were bad for the body, leading to excess belly fat. Those studies, however, were done on rats, and featured far more artificial sweetener than any one person is likely to ever consumer. Just like everything in life, please use lowcalorie sweeteners in moderation. Now that you have heard the good news, add a little flavor into your life, your taste buds will thank you, right along with your waistline. So lets drink up, be merry and add some low-calorie sweetener to it. myself. The disorder was no less real to me, however, and I still struggle with the effects to this day. Just as veterans who return from war and who may have difficulty re-assimilating, long-term survivors of HIV/AIDS can often feel out of place and useless. In a perfect world, we would pay proper respect to our own soldiers, and let them know we appreciate all that they’ve been through. Programs and services designed and tailored specific to our own unique needs as AIDS veterans are desperately needed. It’s time for us to create the structures and support systems that will help our veterans financially, mentally and physically, well into their golden years. They – we – deserve no less. In June, Positively Aware magazine and its publisher, the Chicago-based HIV service organization TPAN, will launch The Reunion Project (TRP), to help long-term survivors of HIV
June 17, 2015
I was first diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) shortly after I tested HIV-positive in 1989 and went into psychotherapy. PTSD, as defined by the Mayo Clinic, is a mental health condition that’s triggered by a terrifying event – either experiencing or witnessing it. Not everyone who experiences the event will develop PTSD. Some may just have difficulty coping for a while, but eventually they’ll adjust and get back to their “normal” life. It’s only when symptoms (which can manifest as intrusive memories, avoidance, negative changes in thinking or mood, or changes in emotional reactions) start to cause significant problems in social or work situations and relationships, that it becomes a more serious issue. While my PTSD was related to childhood sexual abuse, it was triggered by living in the midst of a holocaust and ending up testing positive
and AIDS honor our past, examine resilience, and identify and develop successful strategies for living – today and into the future. The Reunion Project will be a series of summits and activities happening across the country, the next one being held in Palm Springs in November. Those now coming into young adulthood never knew a time when HIV didn’t exist, and for their entire life effective treatments for HIV/ AIDS have always been available – in other words, for them it’s always been a manageable chronic illness, such as diabetes or hypertension. While fear motivated us to fight to survive early on in the epidemic, it’s no longer an effective deterrent or motivator for those who aren’t experiencing the same sense of loss on a day-to-day basis. The fear of death from HIV/ AIDS is now a distant memory, an abstract concept. They say that with age comes wisdom – I’m not sure if I’m the best example of that, but I do think there’s another exciting opportunity for long-term survivors of HIV and AIDS, and that is to engage the next generation to talk about some of the experiences we’ve been through, challenges we’ve overcome, and triumphs we’ve achieved, to try to start to bridge the gap that currently exists between us. And I’m sure we could learn a thing or two from those who are, or will soon be, leaders in their own right. It’s necessary to hear and share our stories with one another, for they define us. It’s where we come from; it’s who we are. We have the opportunity to learn from our past, and to mentor and guide an entirely new group – while honoring our history, and the fallen. he month of June is typically jam-packed with parades, events and festivities that bring many of us in the LGBTQ community together to revel in our uniqueness, pay tribute to our leaders and honor achievements in our ongoing fight for equality. For those like me who are longterm survivors of HIV/AIDS, there is even more to celebrate – the fact that we have survived long enough to be able to continue to achieve our own personal goals, have a career, or even start a family. But surviving HIV/ AIDS can often come with its own set of issues, such as isolation, depression, substance abuse, stigma, and early aging and mortality. Over the last 30-plus years I’ve lost hundreds of friends, acquaintances and colleagues to HIV and AIDS. In the 25 years since I first tested positive and began treatment, I’ve developed strange conditions such as thrush, kidney sludge and shingles. I’ve been poked, prodded and bled, and made out living wills and medical powers of attorney. I’ve stood in protest lines and marched on Washington, walked marathons and participated in a bike ride. I’ve fallen in love, and broken hearts. I’ve probably been on 10 different drug regimens during that time, which most likely saved my life but definitely have taken their toll. My viral load is undetectable, and my CD4 T-cells and CD4 percentage are near what a normal, healthy HIVnegative person my age might be expected to have. But as the population of people living with HIV and AIDS ages (approximately 50 percent of those living with HIV are now over age 50), we’re beginning to understand that there is much more to the story than simply numbers and percentages. Underneath the surface of the syndrome we know as AIDS lies a darker and much more sinister enemy. Those of us who have come through the fight know that enemy intimately, and we have the battle scars to prove it – but we need new tools and weapons to fight it.

his is a VERY CLASSY restaurant and it is NOT on Las Olas. This gem of a dining establishment is conveniently located on the NW corner of Federal Highway and 62nd street. Franco Filippone, owner and chef of Sette Bello Ristorante, started his career in the restaurant business at the side of his father, after the family emigrated from Palermo, Sicily to open their now historic restaurant in upstate New York. After a long apprenticeship in the family restaurant, Franco relocated to Fort Lauderdale, where he applied his culinary skills at such world class restaurants as The Addison in Boca Raton, Cafe D’Angelo and the much lauded Casa d’Angelo in Fort Lauderdale. Now he brings all his many cooking talents to his charming restaurant, delivering new twists on classic Italian dishes. I most recently dined at Sette Bello with Tracy Mandart (wealth management advisor and managing director of Regent Bank’s financial advisory program) who was the same person that turned me on to this restaurant some two plus years ago. The place is very intimate. Indoor booths surround the outside with traditional table settings on the inside. Outdoors, there are a number of tables for those that care to dine under the stars. Reservations are recommended. With its clothe table coverings and napkins, this is a special dining experience. On my latest outing, we were seated and immediately showered with attention. There are mouthwatering daily specials to compliment the very ample menu. I ordered the Sinatra Chicken off the daily special menu while Tracy ordered a salad (very healthy eater). A complimentary soup of the day comes with lunch, in addition to sliced bread. The traditional lunch menu starts with Insalte including Caprese--Bufala mozzarella layered with plum tomatoes, fire roasted peppers, baby arugula, and proscuitto ($14) or Cranberry, Chopped or Caesar Salad ($12 - $14). Traditional Panini Sandwiches
are available ($10) as well as Pastas ($14 - $16) and Grilled Pizza ($12 - $14). I always indulge in a chef’s special or one of the Pollo e Vitella selections. They include Marsala--veal scallopina sautéed with mushrooms in a marsala wine sauce served with a side of pasta ($14), Milanese - chicken breast breaded and pan fried topped with a mixed salad ($12), and Traditional Parmegiana – served with pasta ($12). Lunch is not complete without an espresso or cappuccino and some pleasant conversation. Dinner features an expanded menu and an elegant ambiance to enjoy a special meal. In addition to the Insalate, there is a generous Antipasti selection including Meatballs ($10), Fritto Misto - lightly floured calamari, shrimp and baby portobello mushrooms served with a marinara sauce ($10), and Bianca’s Gamberi - Prawns wrapped with pancetta and grilled served over escarole ($12). There are dinner portion offerings of the Vitella e Pollo as well as very inviting pasta offerings including Rappini e Salsicia - sauteed broccoli rabe and sausage in garlic and olive oil tossed with whole wheat penne and parmegiano cheese ($22), Linguine Vongole - little neck clams simmered in a garlic wine broth with a pinch of red pepper and fresh parsley over linguini pasta drizzled with extra virgin olive oil ($20), and a Traditional Cappellini - cappellini pasta tossed with pomodoro sauce and fresh basil ($16). Finally there is an interesting seafood selection including Ai Ferri, Fra Diavalo and Scampi. In addition to an espresso or cappuccino at the end of the meal, I might suggest a cannoli!!! Folks that have discovered this restaurant know what I am talking about and share it only with their closest of friends. Once you discover Sette Bello, you will put it on your list of special places to dine.

CAPITOL BEAT BY LINDA PENTZ
Religious Right Wants Marriage Lifesaving Lighted Crosswalks: Equality -Of Church And State Wilton Manors Needs to Get on Board
O
n June 10, a full-page ad appeared in the Washington Post. It anticipated the imminent ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court on marriage equality, which almost everyone predicts will be favorable. Signed by dozens of multi-denominational religious “leaders,” the ad proclaimed that if the Court approves same-sex marriage, the decision would “unleash religious persecution and discrimination against people of faith.” Strong language reflecting strongly held opinions and a harbinger of what will really be “unleashed” if and when the court votes the right way: a vicious and protracted campaign to undermine and even destroy this long overdue step toward genuine equality for all. The signatories also had the gall to invoke the name of Martin Luther King, Jr., who campaigned passionately, and at the cost of his life, for the very thing these people seek to deny the LGBT community -- civil rights. This now ubiquitous claim to victimhood by religious conservatives is clearly the newest K Street strategy for queer haters. In a breathtaking turn of the rhetorical tables, it is they who are now the persecuted ones. Persecuted? Really? Not if you haven’t been pistolwhipped, tied to a fence and left to die, you’re not. Not if you didn’t jump to your death from the George Washington Bridge after being outed on the Internet, you’re not. Not if you haven’t been stomped to death in a public restroom, beaten to death with a baseball bat, or shot to death in your own gay neighborhood by a stranger, you’re not. Not if you haven’t had your face slashed, then been beaten with a shovel, strangled, hogtied and dumped in the Sierra foothills to rot. you’re not. And discriminated against? Currently, only 19 states and the District of Columbia forbid employ-
ment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity (three others protect only for sexual orientation.) In the other states, no such protections exist. None of the Post ad signatories faces the loss of social security benefits because of whom they love. None of them will be fired from a job -- or simply not hired in the first place -because of whom they love. None of them will be chased out of the military because of their gender identity. None of them will lose housing, be refused medical treatment, be deprived of adopting children, or be denied any other fundamental civil right that many of us take for granted. And yet these sanctimonious evangelizers dare to cry discrimination? There is no space here to indulge in a detailed history lesson covering the
centuries of discrimination against LGBT individuals. Suffice to say it is well known, well documented and the examples are legion. Worldwide, one transgender person is still murdered every three days. Enough said. The anti-LGBT clerics complain that they don’t want to be forced “to choose between the state and the Laws of God.” Quite. They want to make them one and the same. As Americans United for Separation of Church and State point out, “they oppose church-state separation and seek political power to mandate their doctrines.” The only right that would be violated if the Supreme Court approves same-sex marriage is their right to deny other people the fundamental civil and human rights they themselves enjoy But it’s a declaration of war, make
no mistake about it. The Post ad warns unapologetically that “we will not honor any decision by the Supreme Court which will force us to violate a clear biblical understanding of marriage as solely the union of one man and one woman,” (even though there is actually no directive in the Bible against samesex marriage per se.) Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, still contemplating a presidential run (who isn’t?), launched his own pre-emptive shot across the bow when he stated that “the only next approach” if the Court rules in favor of marriage equality is “to consider pursuing a constitutional amendment” to over-turn it. After the Supreme Court decision, and no matter which way it goes, it will be just as dangerous to be gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender in America as it was before the vote. And possibly more so. In its June 2015 report on “Hate Violence,” the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP) noted that “in 2014, NCAVP documented 20 anti-LGBTQ and HIV-affected homicides. This is an 11.11% increase from 2013 (18 in 2012 to 20 in 2014) and remains among the highest ever recorded by NCAVP.” NCAVP did find a significant decrease in reports of anti-LGBTQ and HIV-affected non-fatal hate violence, but with murder rates up, the most at risk remain transgender women of color. NCAVP called attacks on the transgender community a “national crisis of deadly violence,” and rightly identified the proliferation of so-called “religious liberties” legislation as “state-sponsored discrimination.” And that, dear religious “leaders,” is what real discrimination actually looks like.

of opinion and ideas that originally set the stage for the country’s greatness. The fact that the LGBT community was the kindling that stoked the fire only serves to show how far we’ve come and what strides we’ve made. And we’re not the only ones. Hillary has come a long way as well. From First Lady of Arkansas to First Lady of the United States, to Secretary of State, to Presidential candidate, she remains a force to be reckoned with. During her speech and rally, Hillary said that she was devoting her candidacy to “everyone who’s ever been knocked down but refused to be knocked out.” To reinforce the point, she had Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” playing in the background. “I think you know by now that I’ve been called many things by many people,” the Democratic candidate told an appreciative Roosevelt Island crowd. “‘Quitter’ is not one of them.” Don’t tell Rupert. He might start drinking again.

Paul R. Cook twitted: “Rupert. You’re drunk. Step away from the keyboard.” Nerdy Wonka added: “Dude, you are so drunk right now. RT” More flattering was Paul Duerinckx: “James Joyce did ‘Stream of Consciousness’ much better than this. Noble effort though, however incomprehensible.” Martyn LeNoble: “Well said Rupert. All the ingredients of good/responsible reporting are there. Print it!” Allen Boyd added: “This is what happens when you let Sarah Palin run your Twitter account.” Clown to the L Joker to the R vented: “Poor right wing homophobes. They can’t even say hateful things against gays anymore without being mocked. How that relates to free speech though is anyone’s guess” In the aftermath, Hillary C got far more attention to her Presidential launch than she might have otherwise expected. illary Clinton gave a speech this past week in New York—the first in her bid to become the next President of the United States. But not just any President, of course. “I will be the youngest woman President in the history of the United States! And the first grandmother as well. And one additional advantage: You won’t see my hair turn white in the White House. I’ve been coloring it for years!” Standing on Roosevelt Island with the new World Trade Center as a backdrop, Hillary (no last name needed) caught the mood of the 5,000 plus supporters assembled for this moment in history. She, of course, didn’t disappoint. “In America, every family should feel like they belong,” she said. “So we should offer hard-working, law-abiding immigrant families a path to citizenship. Not second-class status. “And, we should ban discrimination against LGBT Americans and their families so they can live, learn, marry, and work just like everybody else.” It was “land of the free, home of the brave” stuff that was designed to wake up a slumbering populace, challenging them to get involved and fight. Along the way, however, she also stirred a grumpy Rupert Murdoch, chairman of 20th Century-Fox—the one with the conservative Fox News Network. Twitting as Rupert Murdoch@rupertmurdoch, the 84-year-old executive first grumbled, “HillaryNo Surely smart enough to know she was talking nonsense at yesterday’s yesterday.” Quickly followed by more incoherencies: “HillaryNo Promises outlaw free speech about LGBT. What next? Sounds almost fascist.” Plus: “HillaryNo. Bashes rich banker friends without mention of ‘carried interest’. Must gave (sic) heard from moneybag Sen Chuck Schumer.” While there has been no comment from the H. Clinton camp, the Internet torched red hot in reply. Terence Monro asked “Drunk again?” Cynthia Pope also asked “Are you drunk?”

How could a Swedish pop group from the late 1970s become both a cultural touchstone and a gay favorite? Through such catchy if cheesy songs as “Dancing Queen” and “The Name of the Game.” Before Meryl Streep struggled through these songs for the film version, the ABBA musical Mamma Mia! was a Broadway smash. On the Greek island of Kalokairi, an engaged young woman attempts to find her father. She narrows it down to three men, invites them over (pretending to be her mother), and wackiness ensues. 7:30 p.m. Carol Morsani Hall at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts. 1010 N. he locally focused doc South Beach On Heels (Kino Films) is an intimate look at the drag divas of Ocean Drive, many of whom perform at the Miami Beach gay club Palace. Through a series of interviews with Tiffany Fantasia (aka Henry), Noel Leon (aka Eddie), Latrice Royale (aka Tim), Vinna Rouge (aka Melvin), T.P. Lords (aka Alex), Missy Meyakie LePage (aka Cornelius), Tlo Lords (aka Toni) and Shanaya Bright (Nakia), viewers get up close and personal with these drag legends of South Beach. The doc covers a variety of topics, including “growing up,” “family” (both biological and drag), “money” (how the money earned from performing often doesn’t come close to the financial investment), “identity” (in which Latrice attempts to differentiate drag queens from cross-dressers, transvestites and transgender), the difficulties of “dating” and their “art” touches lives of others. The filmmakers make good use of the location, highlighting a large amount of performance footage, as well as scenes on the beach, in the park and on an Ocean Drive sidewalk. Unfortunately, the film has a multitude of flaws that can’t be covered by make-up, wigs, spandex or sequins. For an unexplained reason, some of the subjects are seen literally rolling around in the street in full drag. In broad daylight! Throughout their struggle, they endured and overcame personal hardships including Richard’s health issues, Tony’s difficulties with his family, the deaths of friends to AIDS, governmental indifference, public hatred and more. sides. Pause, drive the bar upward until your arms are almost locked. Repeat. To add more mass, try Flat Bench Dumbbell Presses. This exercise is similar to the barbell bench press. Lie on a flat bench with your feet planted on the floor. Hold a pair of dumbbells directly over your chest with your palms facing forward. Slowly lower the weights to the sides of your chest until you feel a nice stretch in your chest muscles. Pause, then push the dumbbells straight up without locking your arms at the top of the movement. Repeat. Cable Crossover Flies are excellent for shaping and sculpting the pecs. Stand in the middle of the apparatus with your feet slightly spread, your body tilted slightly forward, and your elbows slightly bent. Grasp the handles with your arms spread; you should feel a nice stretch across your chest. Inhale and squeeze your pecs
together as you press the cable handles forward until your hands touch. Exhale as you complete the contraction and return the handles to starting position. Parallel Bar Dips are superb for both building and shaping the chest. Find the parallel bars in the gym. Support yourself with your arms straight and your torso hanging down from your shoulders. Inhale and bend your elbows to allow your body to sink down between the bars as far as possible. Reverse the motion and return to the starting point, exhaling as you complete the movement. The more you bend forward, the more you involve pecs. Contact trainertomb@aol.com with all of your fitness and wellness questions. Call Tom (954) 557-1119 to set up a free consultation today. takes multiple sets of flies to shape and sculpt these muscles. Flies are performed with less weight using 3-4 sets of 8-12 reps employing progressively heavier weight with each set. Do flies with dumbbells or cables, palms facing inward and knuckles pointed toward the ceiling as you begin. Keep your arms slightly bent throughout the movement as you slowly lower the dumbbells or cables in an arcing motion until your arms are parallel to the floor. Here are a few more advanced exercises that will help you pound your pecs. Go for three to four sets of 8 to 12 repetitions per exercise. For one hell of a good pump for the upper pecs and front deltoids, try Incline Barbell Presses. Lie on an incline bench that is set at a 15-30 degree incline. Grasp the barbell with shoulder –width grip. Lift the bar off the rack and slowly lower it to your upper chest, keeping your arms close to your

f you want a thicker, more defined chest, you require a comprehensive and well designed pectoral-building program. Last week I mapped out a dynamite basic routine using classic free weight exercises to build and sculpt the pectoral muscles of the chest. If you can perform this workout twice a week you will see results by summer of this year! For increasing overall strength, size and mass, I recommend doing basic presses with dumbbells, a barbell or a Smith machine. Start with manageable weight for your first set, then pyramid up to a weight which is about 80-90 percent of your 1 rep maximum. Perform 3-4 sets of 8-12 reps. As you progress to bigger weights call on a buddy to spot you. Few guys possess the square shaped pecs that are so sought after among bodybuilders. Just as it takes more and heavier presses to fashion a thicker chest, so, too, it

Start your morning with a leisure stroll on the beach. Spend your days appreciating the fine art and participate in a sculpting, painting or acting lesson. Capture the picture perfect sunset as it highlights the yellow and green exposure of the sea grass. And finish your day on a sandy dune as you lay back and gaze at the night sky illuminated by millions of explosive dots that are hidden from our South Florida dark bare sky.

Summer Is Here And P-Town Awaits Your Arrival There are two phases that Provincetown, Massachusetts (P-town) undergoes every year--their hibernation phase and their robust phase. During the hibernation phase in the winter, the town is a white bliss wonderland with less than 35 hundred occupants. But that’s nothing compared to their robust phase when the town is reawakened and an influx of more than 30,000 people descend on the resort town to enjoy the sunsoaked summers. P-town rests at the far tip of Cape Cod. The small peninsula town is surrounded by stunning beaches and showcases an artistic offshore scene that includes charming mid-19 century revival buildings, fascinating art galleries and captivating harbors. But what truly stands out about the seaside town is its widely accepting and predominant gay atmosphere. Since the devastation of its fish industry by storm Portland Gale in 1898, Provincetown has seen an invasion of artist who moved in and restored the dilapidated buildings at the same time, the town started to promote itself as a tourist destination to sustain its economy. The town rejuvenated with a burst of artistic and literary productions8 and with that came a sense of freedom that attracted a huge crowd of the gay community. By the 1920s and 30s, the gays superseded the number of artist, writers and poets in town and as the 1970’s dawned P-town became distinctly known as a summer retreat for gays everywhere. P-town has been the United States’ gay mecca of the northeastern region for sometime now. There are a fair share of gay men and women who make the seasonal destination their second home and devotedly return every summer. They take residence in the simplistic yet architecturally stunning homes spread throughout the town. However, for those who don’t have a summer pad in town, there are warm and welcoming Bed and Breakfast accommodations (Gay owned & definitely gay-friendly) that echo the beautiful craftsmanship of the privately owned homes.
