Public TV Station Teams with Anti-Gay North Miami Pastor to Halt Gay Strip Club
By CLIFF DUNN
NORTH MIAMI - The City of North Miami Council voted last evening on the fate of a proposed all-nude male strip club, to the backdrop of loud cries of homophobia and anti-LGBT hysteria against Public Broadcasting System (PBS) affiliate WPBTChannel 2. The furor concerns the proposed location for gay strip bar “Beach Cabaret,” which is to be built on property on Northeast 151st Street that abuts the city’s actual “Sesame Street,” or Northeast 20th Avenue, which is home to the station’s business and operations offices. North Miami LGBT advocates—including City Councilman Scott Galvin—are expressing a range of reactions from disappointed to outraged, because WPBT2 has partnered with Miami-Dade pastor Jack Hakimian in order to keep officials from permitting the club to serve alcohol. “WPBT2 has aligned themselves with a pastor who has repeatedly preached anti-gay sermons and posted discriminatory statements,” says Galvin. Hakimian, pastor of Impact Miami Church and a former Los Angeles gang-banger who was born in Liberia, West Africa, has a history of homophobic statements. He has preached that Members of Congress should disavow the U.S. Constitution when its provisions for equal protections contradict “Christian ethics,” and compared LGBT rights to granting rights to pedophiles. He has posted on Facebook, “I want to make clear that I disagree based on the scriptures that you can actively be gay and still call yourself a Christian.” The five members of the North Miami City Council voted on May 22 to consider a motion to lift the city’s prohibition on selling alcohol at bars that feature full nudity. That proposed lifting of the ban coincided with plans by a business group that once operated Thee Dollhouse strip club in Sunny Isles to open a new club at 2050 Northeast 151st Street. WPBT2 immediately announced its
opposition to changing the zoning regulations, and helped finance collateral materials to distribute to residents. The fliers, which carried the station’s logo, also carried the logo for Impact Miami Church. In addition, Hakimian set up a Web site, nostripclub.org, and he called for residents to “take action” against the proposed club. “We have important national, state, and local people in and out of this building all the time,” Rick Schneider, President and CEO of WPBT, told TV station Local 10 WPLG. “We have a major national newscast that comes out
Pastor Jack Hakimian of here. We have school groups and kids that come here. In that sense, we are concerned about the aesthetics of the neighborhood. We don’t think it’s appropriate.” “I’ve spoken to Rick Schneider. He believes that the fact they have aligned themselves with Pastor Jack on this issue does not mean they support his other teachings. I disagree,” said City Councilman Galvin, who supports the club, which he points out is located in an industrial, not residential, area. According to Galvin, “For WPBT2—our public, community resource—to put their logo alongside this church is irresponsible. At best, it’s sloppy politics. At worst, they’ve helped give Pastor Jack a wider audience by

presenting his church and his views.” Galvin demanded an apology from WPBT2 and its CEO, Rick Schneider, before Tuesday’s council meeting. The councilman is also demanding to know why the station aligned with someone who preaches a gospel of hate. “Mr. Schneider told me they did not screen Pastor Jack in any way before they joined forces with him,” Galvin says. “That they did not is no excuse and they should immediately apologize to the [LGBT] community, their donors, and the viewers for lending their name to messengers of hate and bigotry.” In an email obtained by the Florida Agenda, WPBT’s Schneider disavowed any intention to promote or support anti-gay sentiments or activities. “WPBT2 does not condone, endorse, or give a platform to any of the views cited as examples by Councilman Galvin,” Schneider wrote, adding, “WPBT2 has a strong history of championing diversity, tolerance, and free speech in our programming and practices.” Schneider attempted to explain his “strange bedfellows” relationship with Hakimian. “We were looking for allies in opposing the ordinance change. The pastor spoke at a city council meeting in opposition to the change. We talked about how to raise public awareness, we worked together to produce a flyer, and WPBT2 paid part of the cost to print and mail the flyer.” Galvin says station officials are missing the point. “I totally understand WPBT2’s position on the zoning issue, and stand-by their right to oppose it. I even support Pastor Jack’s right to preach whatever he chooses. But WPBT2 has a deeper obligation to choose their political allies more carefully. “Public television holds an important place in our society. They also have a responsibility to use their good name, and public donations, in a more-balanced manner,” Galvin added.H

Stonewall Summer Pride Lights Up Rainy Gayborhood Sunday WILTON MANORS – A heavy morning downpour did nothing to dampen the festivities on Sunday, as Stonewall Summer Pride heralded the first weekend of Summer 2012 into the gay village of Wilton Manors. The street festival—named to honor the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City, which marked the dawn of the modern LGBT rights movement—gave tribute to both the past achievements of LGBT advocates, and to more recent accomplishments, such as the repeal of the Pentagon’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, and the recognition of marriage equality in places across the U.S. A Who’s Who list of business and community leaders, and worldclass performers participated in Stonewall Summer Pride, which kicked off at noon, in spite of heavy rains and the appearance of Tropical Storm Debby, which drenched most of the Sunshine State on Sunday. The event featured entertainers including Tony Award®-winning singer Jennifer Holliday, entertainer Jonny McGovern (the “Gay Pimp”), performer Tiffany Arieagus, and headlining entertainer Andy Bell, the lead singer for 80s British pop duo Erasure. The Twilight Parade, which capped off the day, kicked off shortly after 7 p.m. It included 70 floats, a pink Broward Sheriff ’s Office (BSO) cruiser, 30 BSO horses, a mile-long rainbow flag sponsored by Jackson Padgett, Mark Negrete, and the staff of Georgie’s Alibi, and Emmy Award®-winning writer Bruce Vilanch, who served as Grand Marshal. Officials closed Wilton Drive from Dairy Queen at the south end to Wells Fargo Bank at Five Points, and attendees lined both sides of the Drive to observe the spectacle.
LOCAL DESK
The evening’s events ended around 11 p.m., with live performances from Bell and others at the main stage near Wilton’s Bier Garden, at the corner of Northeast 6th Avenue. Al Cicotte, President of American Tax and Insurance Services, who attended Stonewall Summer Pride with his partner of 25 years, Kevin Palombo, said that—rain or shine—the event was a huge success, and made a larger point. “Rain or not—thinks are looking very sunny for gay rights,” said Cicotte. “Kevin and I have been coming to these for years all over the country, and hands down, we had the best time today.”
Swinging Richards Sues City of North Miami Beach NORTH MIAMI BEACH All-nude male strip club Swinging Richards is suing the City of North Miami Beach for anti-gay discrimination. Citing relaxed regulations that have permitted female dancers to dance nude at establishments that serve alcohol for years, Swinging Richards owner C.B. Jones has come out swinging himself, claiming that city officials are selectively-enforcing a local ordinance that prevents establishments from displaying total nudity when they serve licensed alcohol, simply because of the bar patrons’ lifestyle. Since 1994, total nudity has been banned in North Miami Beach at clubs which sell liquor, but the ordinance wasn’t enforced until Swinging Richards opened in October. In the past, the club’s physical location featured nude female dancers for over 20 years, and there are at least two other clubs in North Miami Beach that feature total female nudity. The city is also threatening these bars with enforcement of the regulations. North Miami Beach City Attorney Darcee Siegel has 20 days to respond in court to the lawsuit.

Black Pastors Oppose Jacksonville Gay Rights Ordinance JACKSONVILLE – Plans to introduce a measure banning discrimination in the workplace based upon sexual orientation have foundered, thanks to opposition from Jacksonville’s black Baptist pastors. Reverend R.L. Gundy, vice president of Jacksonville’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference, told Jacksonville.com, “I told them that this was wrong on the first day they were considering it.” In May, Jacksonville City Councilman Warren Jones, who is African American, introduced a measure to end discrimination in employment, housing, or access to public accommodations, based on a person’s sexual orientation. The proposal is supported by former Jacksonville elected officials and city business leaders. Although councilors planned to vote on the measure this month, disputes over the language have stalled it until sometime next month. In 2009, a Pew Research Center survey found that 40 percent of African-Americans identify themselves as Baptist, a Christian denomination that is known for its

literal Biblical interpretations. And 46 percent said homosexuality should be discouraged. In her 1999 book “Sexuality and the Black Church: A Womanist Perspective,” author and religion professor Kelly Brown Douglas argued that because black churches have
historically ignored sexual issues, it created an intolerance of homosexuality within the African-American community, and also contributed to that community’s slow response to the nation’s AIDS epidemic.
Vilanch and Batt Take Broward Center Stage FORT LAUDERDALE – Former “Mad Men” regular Bryan Batt joined Stonewall Summer Pride Grand Marshal Bruce Vilanch last week as members of the South Florida cast for the premiere of “Standing on Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays.”
Bryan Batt, Standing on Ceremony
Its four-day run at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ Amaturo Theater ended Sunday, June 24. According to the producers, “From the potential spouses, to the impact vows have on friends, family, and colleagues, ‘Standing On Ceremony’ presents all perspectives and points of view. Witty, warm and occasionally wacky, these plays are vows to the blessings of equality, the universal challenges of relationships and the often hilarious power of love.” Among the writers whose works were featured are Obie Award winner Mo Gaffney, Heideman Award winner Jordan Harrison, Tony Award nominee Moisés Kaufman, Emmy and WGA Award winner Joe Keenan, Tony Award nominee Neil LaBute, Sundance Jury Prize winner Wendy MacLeod, Obie Award winner José Rivera, Obie and Outer Critics Circle Award winner Paul Rudnick, and Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Doug Wright. A portion of proceeds from the performances will benefit Equality Florida.H

The Summer of Love JUNE 27, 2012 • ISSUE 131
CLIFF DUNN, EDITOR
A
fter the dust settled from last weekend’s Stonewall Summer Pride, I had a few minutes to think about what the next three months is likely to hold for the LGBT rights movement. My publisher—and my boyfriend, too—would probably disagree, but I prefer to err on the side of caution, at least insofar as making broad political or policy predictions. But several factors—much like the systems that come together to form a tropical cyclone, or what we here down south call a hurricane—have begun to form around one another, in a way that has the potential to change the political calculus, relevant to the future of LGBT rights, that will be pleasing to progressives (although Democrats may find themselves sucking on the fuzzy end of the lollipop when it’s all over). The first factor—much like the low-pressure system in the center of a tropical storm—was President Obama’s announcement last month, “I think same-sex couples should be able to get married.” For pessimistic liberals and cranky conservatives who think that Obama’s words were simply political hot air—red meat thrown to a highdollar-donating constituency, which has been pretty vocal thus far in their disappointment with what they see as the chief executive lip service—this sort of endorsement from a sitting POTUS during a general election year all but guarantees that a plank supporting marriage equality for LGBT Americans will be added to the party platform at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte. At the end of summer, by the way.
Unlike, say, Bill Clinton’s 1996 State of the Union address, in which he had Limbaugh and Hannity pleasuring themselves after he announced that “the era of big government is over,” this is more than a nod to the gay rights lobby. Long-term, this will likely have the same paradigm-shifting impact of President Truman’s 1948 signing of Executive Order 9981, which abolished racial segregation in the armed forces. For most of the last six weeks, the news cycle has been dominated by same sex marriage: the chattering class has a way of sensing a coming storm. Incidentally, I don’t want to give short shrift to the importance of the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. I think it is a sign of the times—and another weather front moving into our political perfect storm system—that the vast majority of Americans (bigots included) think that an over-deployed military only stands to gain from an influx of fresh recruits, no matter whom they love, by chance or choice. I am not naïve enough to believe that the mighty ship of service that is our armed armed forces can be turned around 180 degrees in either culture or mindset, but the journey of a thousand miles, and all that, requires a starting point, and Obama defined that. In less than a decade, this will be a yawner. (And John McCain should hang his head: His legitimate record of military and public service will be remembered only second to his loutish complaining about the president’s repeal of the loathsome DADT policy—a move he actually supported when Obama was still just a community organizer. Shame on you, Senator.) The third “storm front” is Marco Rubio’s recent political legerdemain, in which he proudly flouted his traditionalist credentials while giving a tender wink to the LGBT voters who occassionally break Republican.
Speaking to Christianity Today, the potential running mate to Mitt Romney disavowed both the notion that he— and by extension, Romney and the rest of the GOP—want to discriminate against anybody, or that “his way” was the only way. Sounding more like Clarence Darrow than Clarence Thomas, Florida’s junior U.S. Senator used the same sentence to provide comfort to both the left and right (“I believe marriage is a unique and specific institution that is the result of thousands of years of wisdom, which concluded that the ideal—not the only way but certainly the ideal—situation to raise children to become productive and healthy humans is in a home with a father and mother married to each other.”), before he once again let gays— particularly those in close-race states like North Carolina, Ohio, and his own Florida—know that he wants to be “America’s first gay vice president.” (“Does that mean people who are not in that circumstance cannot be successful? Of course not. It’s not a discriminatory thing.”) Rubio knows, as well as Obama does, that demographics are destiny, and the young generally could care less who you marry. By 2032 (by which time Rubio will have likely made his own run for the White House), marriage equality will be a fait accompli. I realize that 20 years is a long time, and there are Supreme Court decisions still to come. But the final factor—the one that forms all these elements into the perfect political storm—is the will of the American people, who are jumping on the “gay rights is civil rights” bandwagon in droves, which means that in spite of the ill will of Mitt Romney and the conservative base whose anger he is attempting to harness, this promises to be a most interesting political season for all the Boys of Summer. Aussie Salvation Army Apologizes After Official Says LGBT People Should Die MELBOURNE, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA – The Salvation Army of Australia has issued an apology after an official told a radio interviewer that he agrees with Biblical punishments against homosexuality, including the death penalty. On Thursday, Major Andrew Craibe appeared on a Melbourne gay radio station to encourage donations for the organization’s charitable works. The appearance was scheduled after Darren Hayes, the lead singer of pop band Savage Garden, called for a boycott because of the charity’s views on homosexuality. Hayes is openly gay, and in a civil partnership with his British partner. When the interviewer asked Craibe to defend the section of the organization’s “Salvationist Handbook of Doctrine” which cites the declaration in Romans 1:18-32 that homosexuals deserve death, Craibe responded, “That’s a part of our belief system.” “We have an alignment to the scriptures,” he said, adding, “That is part of our Christian doctrine and that’s our understanding of that.” Under Salvation Army rules, practicing homosexuals are prohibited from becoming full members. About homosexuality, the Biblical Book of Romans states that “those who do such things deserve death.” Craibe noted that homosexuals can choose to be celibate if they wish to become full members, something he compared to his choice to abstain from alcohol. “The Salvation Army sincerely apologizes to all members of the [LGBT] community and to all

Street Day festival, the city’s famous gay pride event. The event included 50 floats and a recreated Berlin Wall (completely with faux-Checkpoint Charlie), as well as protests designed to draw attention to the homophobic laws of Russia. Brandishing signs that depicted Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, activists marched to the Russian embassy, where they heard speeches from Russian LGBT rights activists. “[The Russian authorities] think the rainbow flag can make someone gay. We laugh at them,” said one. “We laugh at Putin. That’s why we are here. We are together with all of you from different countries. I hope one day we will have the same pride in Russia, and thousands of gays and lesbians will celebrate together.” At the manufactured Checkpoint Charlie, signs warned attendees that they were “entering the Russian sector” where “homo propaganda” and “free speech” are banned.H

20-Day Jail Term Ends for Ex-Rutgers Student Convicted in Hate Crime NORTH BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY - The former Rutgers University student convicted of using his Web cam to spy on his roommate having sex with another man, left jail last week, less than three weeks after he began a 30-day jail sentence. Dharun Ravi, 20, became something of a national antiposter boy for bullying not long after beginning his freshman year at Rutgers in fall 2010. Just a few weeks after school began, the freshman set up a Web cam to spy on Tyler Clementi, his roommate, who requesting their shared room so he could host a date. Clementi, 19, killed himself days later, after learning that Ravi had invited others to watch the two men engaging in sex. Ravi was convicted in March of 15 criminal charges, some of which carried penalties of up to 10 years imprisonment. Because Ravi was not charged in Clementi’s death, Judge Glenn Berman of Superior Court sentenced him to 30 days in jail, three years of probation, 300 hours of community service, and fined him $10,000, which is to be paid to a fund that helps victims of bias crimes. Last week, federal immigration officials announced they will not seek to deport Ravi to his native country, India.
Major Foe of Marriage Equality Recants His Position NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK – One of the most influential figures in the national movement to oppose gay marriage has had a change of heart, announcing last week that “the time has come for me to accept gay marriage and emphasize the good that it can do.” David Blankenhorn, the founder and President of the Institute for American Values, said Friday in an interview on National Public Radio (NPR) that, in

spite of his personal misgivings about expanding traditional marriage, “the time for denigrating or stigmatizing same sex relationships is over.” “I opposed gay marriage believing that children have the right, insofar as society makes it possible, to know and to be cared for by the two parents who brought them into this world,” Blankenhorn, 57, wrote in an opinion piece that ran, also Friday, in The New York Times. In 2007, he authored “The Future of Marriage” in support of the institution’s traditional definition, and was presented as an expert witness in Perry v. Schwarzenegger by the supporters of California’s Proposition 8, the state constitutional amendment that banned marriage for same sex couples. In the Times piece, Blankenhorn noted, “Whatever one’s definition of marriage, legally recognizing gay and lesbian couples and their children is a victory for basic fairness.”
Penn State Football Coach Guilty of Abusing Boys B E L L E F O N T E , PENNSYLVANIA —On Friday, former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was convicted of sexually assaulting 10 boys—all of them children reared in disadvantaged homes whom Sandusky, 68, befriended and then repeatedly molested. The jury of seven women and five men deliberated for two days on 48 counts against him. Sandusky was found guilty on 45 of them, including multiple charges of rape and sodomy. It is likely that he will spend the rest of his life in prison. During the two week trial, prosecutors said that Sandusky, who served as the university’s defensive coordinator from 1969 to 1999, used a charity he founded to scout for potential abuse victims, whom he showered with gifts and money, and invitations to Penn State football games. Sandusky also showered with the victims—some as young as 10 years old—and slept with
them in hotel rooms. Testimony was heard from eight victims, who offered graphic accounts of repeated abuse by Sandusky, including in places on the Penn State campus and in the basement of his home. One of Sandusky’s own adopted children, Matt, came forward with his own horrifying account of sexual assault by the coach.
Roman Catholic Monsignor Guilty of Child Endangerment in Abuse Case P H I L A D E L P H I A , PENNSYLVANIA — On Friday, Monsignor William Lynn became the first senior Roman Catholic official in the U.S. to be convicted of concealing sexual abuses by priests under his supervision. Lynn, 61, from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, was found guilty of endangering children, a conviction hailed by victims’ advocates, who have called for accountability on the part of senior church officials who covered up misdeeds, and transferred predatory priests to unsuspecting parishes. Lynn faces a prison term of three-and-a-half to seven years when he is sentenced on August 13. Lynn served the 1.5 million-member

archdiocese from 1992 to 2004, where he recommended priest assignments and investigated abuse complaints. Prosecutors showed that Lynn neither kept suspected molesters away from children, nor reported sexual assaults to authorities.

La Raza Delivers “La Endorsement” for Marriage Equality WASHINGTON, D.C. – Last week, the nation’s largest Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization endorsed marriage equality for all Americans. The National Council of La Raza (NCLR) announced in a story in the Washington Blade that the organization’s national board of directors has voted unanimously to support same sex marriage. Eric Rodriquez, Vice President of Public Policy for NCLR, said, “There was discussion for that period of time, but everyone really strongly felt that supporting what we had already put out there in terms of our statement was the right thing to do.”
Janet Murguía, President and CEO of NCLR
The organization, founded in 1968, is headquartered in Washington, D.C., with regional offices in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, Sacramento, San Antonio,
and San Juan, Puerto Rico. NCLR is funded by philanthropic organizations, including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Ford Foundation, as well as corporate benefactors, which number among them Citigroup and Walmart. La Raza’s endorsement follows that of the Board of Directors of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), which voted last month to support marriage equality at its national meeting in Miami. Janet Murguía, the President and Chief Executive Officer of NCLR, said of La Endorsement, “NCLR has taken a strong stand on marriage equality and our Board of Directors wanted to affirm and support that decision, which I very much appreciate. That unanimous vote recognizes that marriage equality and LGBT issues are, and need to be, part of NCLR’s core civil rights agenda.” The endorsement of NCLR—and the earlier one by the NAACP— reflects a growing movement among minority leaders to reevaluate traditional attitudes toward LGBT rights. That momentum in the Hispanic community has previously taken the form of endorsements for same sex marriage by the Mexican American Legal Defense Fund and the Texas Chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens. These changes also reflect a shift in the demographic support for gay marriage, with recent polls showing that as much as 54 percent of Hispanics now support some form of legal recognition for same sex unions. In 2008, 67 percent of U.S. Hispanics
Obama: Change is “bueno”
voted for President Obama, something that U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Illinois) thinks is important to remember. “Most Latinos favor broader civil rights protections and inclusion in U.S. society, and the issue of same-sex marriage is no exception,” Gutierrez told The Huffington Post. “A majority of Latino voters favor legalizing same-sex marriage, as a recent NCLR study showed,” he added. And Pedro Julio Serrano, spokesperson for the National Gay
and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) says that another factor contributes to growing Latino support for gay marriage: A strong sense of family. “We know what ‘familia’ is,” Serrano said. “When we see same sex couples in loving and committed relationships, when we see that more that 40 percent are raising children, we want them to have the same rights and protections as the opposite sex couples have. In any case, if it has an effect, it will be a positive one."H

The Big Island Hawaii’s Largest Treasure
Part III

N
othing on earth quite matches the stunning spectacle of an erupting volcano. All power, heat, and lava-unleashed in a formidable display of Mother Nature so incredible that even witnessing the act fails to convince the viewer that there is an authority so almighty that it is capable of producing such a show. Yet here, on the Big Island of Hawaii, it is a daily performance, hurled skyward by Pele, goddess of fire, lightning, and wind, who makes her home in the caldera of the 4,190-foot Kilauea volcano. In a constant state of active eruption since 1983, this Hawaiian hot spot is the most active volcano in the world. Lava leaving the volcano is so hot (calculated to be over 2,000 degrees F) that the Hawaii Volcano National Park has closed previously open access to the active lava flow area. Currently, the best way to view this unbelievable spectacle of nature is via plane. Big Island Air (808-329-4868) provides an hour-and-a-half tour that leaves from Kona International Airport, five times a day including the incredible sunset

tour, when the lava of Kilauea flames brilliance even against the incredible Hawaiian sunset. While many gravitate to helicopters and Paradise Helicopters (808-969-7392) provides an excellent service, Big Island Air is less expensive, provides first class all-window seats, and a longer tour, so the choice is yours, but do not miss the opportunity to see this wonder of nature. The Big Island may not be as sophisticated as Maui with its grand homes and lavish golf courses, or as gay intense as Oahu with its clubs, bars and bath houses, but Hawaii’s largest island has its own special charm of undeveloped rain forests, hiking trails, waterfalls, and some of the loveliest beaches in the world. Hotels on the island range from the ultra-extravagant Four Seasons Resort Hualālai at Historic Ka‘ūpūlehu (fourseasons.com/hualalai) and Fairmont Orchid on the Kohala Coast (fairmont.com/orchid) to the budget based Marriott Courtyard King Kamehameha (marriott.com/

There’s also a variety of bed-and-breakfast accommodations throughout the island, many in off-thegrid exotic locales. Since there is no such thing as avoiding the sun in this cow-paddy of paradise in the Pacific, you might as well head to the most delicious of beaches on the Big Island. Local sun worshipper and palm expert Donald Sanders (Uncle Don, to you) assures us that Magic Sands Beach Park, a smidge past the Four Mile Marker on Alii Drive in Kona on the West side of the island is a prime spot close to many of the major hotels. Personally, we’ve always had a fondness for Kua Bay, officially known as Manini’owali Beach Park since they’ve pave the entrance road (directly across the Veteran’s Cemetery at Mile Marker 19) and added paved free parking. The pale blue water luxuriates against the white sand, with lots of muscled boogie boarders to keep you amused and
spellbound. For the more ecological among us, we can’t rave enough about Big Island Eco Adventures (808-889-5111). They operate nine zip lines across the jungle treetops and waterfalls. The cost is currently $176.04, and worth every single penny. It’s so much fun, you may double dip and go back for more, or try Hawaii Forest and Trail (808-331-8505) with their own zip lines and hiking tours, including an evening volcano summit tour. Next week, we’ll get more tips from Donald Sanders, the ultimate in Big Island savvy, who will talk food and trips to the wet East side. Abdominal Fat: Bearly essential
O
By Andy kress
besity concentrated at the waist has been linked as a precursor to many other health related diseases. The biggest concern for excess visceral and central fat is its link to type 2 diabetes, both correlated well with each other and with the waist circumference. Cardiovascular disease is not far behind as the one of the top related symptoms.
The bear community compounds their by problem by cultivating the look, while achieving this debilitating disease. Abdominal fat is no joke when it comes to your overall health and look. The proud “beer belly” that is sported by this group will in turn be the death of them. CUBS and BEARS are now warned: abdominal fat is bearly essential. Body fat comes in quite a few different forms. Visceral fat--the one that is targeted in this article--is also known as organ fat or intra-abdominal fat. This is located at the peritoneal cavity packed in between the internal organs and the torso. Subcutaneous fat is found underneath the skin and tends to pocket itself in specific areas. Intramuscular fat is dispersed throughout the skeletal muscle, like marbling in a piece of red meat. Of all the fats listed, visceral fat is the most detrimental to your health. The “pot belly” or “beer belly” are cute nicknames for excess visceral fat, where the abdomen protrudes excessively. There is one easy way to tell if you have
too much visceral fat--use a tape measure around your waist. No need for a body mass index (BMI) test, your waist size alone will tell you if you have too much visceral fat and are putting yourself at risk to a slow, early grave. Waist size over 38 inches is not a fashion statement, regardless of your height. If your stomach is sticking out past your chest and you can’t see your crotch, it is time to do something about it. Visceral fat can be easily avoided by eating a proper diet. Variety is the spice of life, and that is true for your diet too. Eat a wide variety of carbohydrates, proteins, dairy products and healthy fats for a complete diet. Portion control is also another easy way to prevent and fight abdominal fat. Eating smaller meals throughout the day or “grazing” is the way a human is supposed to eat. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are the three main times of day for eating by tradition, but eating five or six small meals a day is much easier for the body to burn the energy consumed.
Large meals are like throwing large logs in a fire place to burn. It takes a long time to break down and burn up that energy. But if we eat smaller portions, just like kindling, it takes less time to burn, leaving less unused energy to be stored as fat. Less stored fat means less visceral fat, leaving a leaner, healthier you. Exercise always helps to burn calories and helps prevent fat storage production. Light weights and resistance are all that is required when eating smaller portions, meaning less strenuous exercise and more ultimate results. There is no need to do 500 crunches a day either, twisting the torso is the best way to achieve an all around tapered look around the mid-section, shaping the sides, as well as the front. The moral of this article, your belly of today will be your health problem of tomorrow. Eat wisely. Bear are fun to hug, but not to lift in a coffin.

By Rory Barbarosa Dancer: Casper Smart Is Gay, Using Jennifer Lopez
H
OLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA – A rival dancer has been trying to “out” the 25-year-old boyfriend of Jennifer Lopez, claiming in online posts that Casper Smart is gay, and only using Lopez to acquire fame and wealth. Joshua Lee Ayers, who worked in the 2010 dance film “Step Up 3D” with Smart, has been using his Twitter account to call into question the former J-Lo backup dancer’s sexual orientation.
Smart boyfriend?
Ayers, a dancer at Hollywood nightclub Boulevard3, began his online harassment in March, after Twitter fans asked Smart about his choreography techniques. Ayers responded that “He stealz them off of other choreographers...” He then began accusing Smart of denying his homosexuality, tweeting, “LOL @jessyterrero check out Ur Gay Homie @caspersmart. Gay Couple Marries in Big Apple Comic Book Store NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK – Taking a cue from comic heroes Northstar and Kyle Jinadu—characters in the fictional Marvel Comics universe who tied the knot this month—two gay men from Ohio took their own leap “in a single bound,” and married in a ceremony at a New York City comic book shop. Self-described “comic book geeks” Jason Walker and Scott Everhart were married at Midtown Comics, in a ceremony timed to coincide with the release date of the gay wedding issue of Astonishing X-men #51, the superhero group to which Northstar and Janadu are affiliated. The couple—die-hard comic book fans—opted to form their dynamic duo in the Big Apple, because Ohio prohibits same sex marriage. Among those
attending their ceremony was New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Gay Porn Star’s Death Sparks Vicious Online Attacks NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK – The death of gay porn star Erik Rhodes on June 14 has mobilized both fans and those critical of the late actor’s openly gay lifestyle to post their commendations—and condemnations—of the late star online. Rhodes—whose real name was James Elliot Naughtin—died of an apparent heart attack in his sleep, in an incident that may have been related to his well known use of steroids. Rhodes, 30, was well-regarded in the gay community. Falcon Studios CEO Adam Q. Robinson tweeted last week that the actor was “a man of steel on the outside, but all teddy bear on the inside.” Producer and author Jack Shamama relayed his shock. “I still can’t believe @ Erik_Rhodes is no longer with us,” Shamama tweeted. “He was a gentle giant. Anyone who says otherwise didn’t know him.” Rhodes’ heavy use of club drugs and steroids were well known, as were his battles with depression. While messages of support and condolences filled cyberspace last week, there were also postings from those who took the opportunity to assail Rhodes’ memory. On Queerty.com, an article about Rhodes’ death prompted this comment from a user named Cynthia, who criticized Rhodes and the LGBT community. “This story has brought me to tears and is a clear example that the wages of sin is death,” she wrote. “The fact that the gay community loves pornography and celebrates the pornographic industry is a tragedy.”
George Takei Sports Old (Boy Scouts) Uniform for NYC PRIDE NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK – “Star Trek” actor and LGBT rights activist George Takei—who played Lieutenant Sulu on the iconic 1960s television series— rode in the official Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) car this weekend during New York City’s 43rd Annual LGBT Pride March in New York City, a vehicle driven by Ohio mom and former Boy Scout leader Jennifer Tyrrell, who was ousted as a Scout leader because she is gay. “I’m saddened and shocked by the policy the Boy Scouts have,” said Takei, 75, who is openly gay. Tyrrell and Takei, each be accompanied by their respective spouses, donned matching Boy Scout uniforms to protest Tyrrell’s removal as leader for her 7-year-old son’s Boy Scout troop in Bridgeport, Ohio. In April, Scouting officials asked her to step down as Scout leader, because her sexual orientation “did not meet the high standards” of conduct of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). After being forced to resign, Tyrrell’s son, Cruz, was deactivated from his Scout troop. In true Scout fashion, the mother of four was prepared, and launched a Change.org petition that has netted over 300,000 signatures, as well as the support of A-Listers like actors Julianne Moore, Benecio Del Toro, Josh Hutcherson of “The Hunger Games,” Diana Agron of “Glee,” and singer Ricky Martin. “She personifies all the best qualities of scouting,” said Takei of Tyrrell.H
Newell: Cocktails
The road to being an “award-winning bartender” has been a long and winding one for Georgie’s Alibi bartender Scot Newell. For example, Newell laughingly notes that he got into bartending through “necessity.” “I was working in New York as a lighting designer, and it certainly helped to propel me into the creative area that I am now in, but it just wasn’t paying the bills,” he recalls. “Anyone who has ever lived in New York knows what the bills are like. One day, I was offered a job doing lighting at Caroline’s Comedy Club. They explained that there were not too manyw hours available for lighting and stage management, but they could offer me a few shifts bartending.” His first leg on that road had begun. “I was at Caroline’s for several years, before I decided I really wanted to get out of New York,” Newell remembers. “I had an offer to go to Provincetown to redo a retail store. I moved to do the job, and there I got another offer to redo the Post Office Café. I really never planned to stay in P-town, but I ended up there for eight years. After finishing the decorating projects, I really didn’t know what I was going to do. I was at the A House—which is a very well known bar in P-Town—for eight years. During the summer months, it was great. People called it ‘Little Bar Scot.’ “The winter months weren’t so pleasant,” Newell says. “It was cold, rainy, snowy, and there was not a lot to do. So after eight years, I decided to winter one season in Florida. I had met George Kessinger—the creator of Georgie’s Alibi—in P-Town, and had known of the reputation of the man and the bar. I applied for work while I was down here, but like a lot of other people, I didn’t hear a word.” Newell laughs. “But I wouldn’t quit trying! I kept bugging Georgie to the point that it had become a joke. It was either ‘I was going to get a job,’ or there would be a restraining order issued,” he half-jokes.
After getting his job at Alibi, Newell again decided to pursue his creative side, and in 2002, he presented his design portfolio to the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. He enrolled that day, and completed the four year program in just three years, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Interior Design. In 2004, he incorporated his Great Scot Enterprises brand. In 2010, Newell got a call from his former employer, George Kessinger, who was living in Palm Springs, California. Kessinger had previously sold the Wilton Manors Alibi, and moved to the desert, opening Azule and the Palm Springs Alibi. In partnership with the Tourism Board of Palm Springs, Stoli Liquors, and LoGo TV, they created the Palm Springs Stoli Summer Splash Cocktail Challenge, events held across the U.S. and Canada at the top LGBT bars and nightclubs, with favorite local bartenders competing against one another to stir up the best signature cocktails, and win a trip to Palm Springs for Two for the finals, which was precisely what Scot did. After winning the regional competition, held in Fort Lauderdale, he captured the national first prize. Today, Newell holds court at the original Georgie’s Alibi in the Shoppes of Wilton Manors every Saturday morning, beginning at 11 a.m., and he can be found there throughout the week, as well. Here is the recipe for his award winning cocktail: 3 oz. of Absolut Citron 1 oz. of pomegranate liqueur A splash of each of the following: sour mix, cranberry juice, and 7UP. Garnish with a lemon wheel and Pomegranate seeds. Do you have what it takes to be our “Bartender of the Month?” Email: dalemadison@guymag.net. Cheers! H

My ex was cruel. And hot. And masculine. And mean. And [insert any positive adjective here]. And [insert any negative adjective here]. He possessed a blend of the most wonderful—as well as the most tragic— qualities one might imagine an ex having: Enough good in him to fall in love with, and keep me hooked, and enough bad in him to cry over (and keep me hooked). Above anything else, though, he was smart. He wasn’t an intellectual by any stretch, but his common sense and chessstrategist-like thinking was impressive. He knew, for example, how to disarm me in any argument. I called it his “Cowboy Maxim.” “Who is that?” I question him in bed one morning. He’s leaning off the edge and texting someone. Silence. “WHO are you texting?!” I ask, more forcefully. I suspect he’s cheating on me. The notion calls for sleepless nights, but my distrust isn’t enough for me to break up with him. I am in love, after all. He doesn’t respond, and still he texts. I grab his shoulder and lightly smack his arm. “BRADLEY! Are you texting that boy I saw you with?” He turns toward me and kisses my lips. He tickles my neck with his scruff. I’m pissed, of course, but I can’t help but laugh. I resort to
punching his arm to get him off me (an act that he thinks is cute, which further infuriates me). He suddenly jumps off the bed and runs into his walk-in closet. I’m left by myself, my sides hurting from laughing. I sit up, frustrated, and suddenly very weary. I’m insanely jealous now, and whether it’s the boy with whom he’s cheating on me, or his mother, he knows his silence as to the question of whom he was texting pisses me off. “BRADLEY!” I yell. “Please tell me you weren’t texting that boy.” “I wasn’t texting that boy,” he says happily from his closet. This angers me even more. “No, tell me the truth! Were you texting him or not?” There is a silence, and then from the closet he emerges wearing only underwear, cowboy boots, and a cowboy hat: a combination that, for whatever reason, never ceases to cure my peeve. He smiles at me as he walks over to the bed. “Why, hello there, young man,” he says in an exaggerated western accent. He puts one leg up on the bed. The shift in weight emphasizes his muscular thighs. UGH. Why does he have to do this? Can’t he see that I’m mad and that I wanna stay mad?! He does this all the time, sometimes with flowers in hand. I can’t pinpoint what it is about him in this moment. He’s still the man who pissed me off moments ago. But the scene is too seductive. I fall for it every time. He kneels on the bed, and the scene gets graphic. An hour later, he’ll be holding me. I will have forgotten that I was ever mad. And he will continue to be him, the man with the Cowboy Maxim. TIJUANA FLATS
THERE IS NO PROBLEM A BURRITO CAN’T SOLVE By RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN
tijuana flat’s delicious blackened chicken burrito
T
ijuana Flats on Sunrise Boulevard is a one-room joint of the placeyour-order and-wait-for-themagic-to-happen type. Around 7 p.m. on any night, the place is a chatty, crazy kind of fun where it’s likely you’ll end up becoming best friends with the folks at the next table. Everyone, from the wait staff who cashier your order, to the kitchen staff who prepare it, to the manager who may just end up serving it, likes to talk. It’s this slap-yaon-the-back sort of camaraderie that is as intriguing as the food. We’ve eaten at Tijuana Flats maybe ten times over the past two years, so we know this menu well. It breaks down rather easily, as most things Mexican do, into burritos, chimichangas, tacos, nachos, flautas, tosdadas, enchildadas, and quesadillas. At TF’s, you not only
get to choose your meal, you get to choose the size of your meal—as in the quantity of food on your plate. Burritos, for instance, come in three sizes: the Regular—about the size of Rhode Island; the Tijuana—about the size of Pennsylvania; and the Megajuana—think Texas. Our favorite is the Blackened Chicken Burrito Tijuana Size at $6.19. For that price you get a whole-wheat tortilla, filled with the aforementioned chicken (done delightfully moist), tomatoes, lettuce, onions, jalapenos, and sour cream—with your selection of 15 different hot sauces from the “pump your own” serving bar. Hot sauces are a specialty here, with Tijuana Flats serving their own “Smack My Ass & Call Me Sally” brand in varying intensities from mild to fivealarm fire. And regardless of where on the menu you may wander, you’ll eventually end up back on the sauce, so to speak. Tuesday nights is Taco Tuesdaze where for $4.99 you can get two large
crispy tacos, with lettuce, chopped tomatoes, onions, jalepenos, plus chips and a drink—and yes, hot sauce. A deal that packs the place. On Thursday night, think Throwback Thursdaze during which $5.99 gets you a regular burrito, chips and a drink. Same fillers, same sauces. The bargain remains in your pocketbook. Lighten your potbelly with the Norrito Bowl, a burrito without the tortilla, served in a bowl and topped with a light salsa-based rice, black beans, pico de gallo sauce, fresh guacamole and green onions. All for only $6.19. If calories are no object, then rush right over and order a Chimichanga, which are stuffed full of cheese, chicken or beef, all the toppings and lightly fried. The Megajuana Carnitas Chimichangas go for $8.59. The chain was started just up the road in Winter Park, Florida back in 1995 by Brian Wheeler, and Brian is still at the wheel along with his pop Chester who’s CFO, and industry
insider Camp Fitch (ya gotta love the name) who’s co-partner and chairman. The restaurant now numbers some seventy plus eateries, spread over several states, with Florida getting the lion’s share. From the murals on the wall, to the funky drawings on the menus, nothing is taken too seriously at Tijauna Flats-except the food, which is consistently great, fast, and plentiful. The company gives back to the community through its Just in Queso Foundation that to date has donated $670,000 to those in need. Check out the action any night of the week. The restaurant is snuggled next to the Trek Bicycle Shop, so expect to see plenty of spandex in the vicinity. And, as always, tell them Florida Agenda sent you.
