OH, AND XANAX: On a weekend morning, I rank the Keurig coffee machine as the greatest invention ever, right up there with the automobile, oxygen, and Xanax. 50 SHADES: Off to get a haircut! My damn hair is getting so gray so quickly... I swear, put me in a drapey evening gown with matching clutch, and I could be Bea Arthur's long-lost, living twin.

NEW DRUG BRINGS HIV OUT OF HIDING 4 A new HIV therapy that could completely

eradicate the virus from positive individuals has been discovered by scientists at Emory University, located in the Atlanta, Georgia, suburb of Druid Hills. One scientist involved in the study labeled it “gamechanging.”

Florida now has the highest number of new HIV diagnoses in the nation, with Hillsborough County demonstrating the largest increase — 63 percent from 2012 to 2014. Tampa is at the epicenter of the epidemic.

Currently, HIV infection and the resulting AIDS disease, is treated with a cocktail of nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitors, that keep the HIV virus from replicating. While these cocktails, and similar treatments, are effective for keeping the HIV virus at an undetectable level in the blood of infected patients, they are not capable of eliminating the virus completely from the body. Previous studies have shown that the HIV virus hides itself in secret reservoirs in the body within three days of initial infection. The Emory study used a “kick and kill” strategy to coax the virus out of hiding with the active ingredient in the previously FDA approved synthetic drug called PEP005, used for topically treating precancerous skin cells. While PEP005 had been previously studied by the University of California Davis Medical School for eradication of HIV, recent studies at Emory have shown that the topical cancer drug used along with another drug called JQ1 is seventimes as effective in flushing out the reservoir CONTINUED 4

pool of HIV in the body. Once released, the tradition treatment cocktail then is used to keep the virus from replicating, while the immune system kills the HIV, eventually removing all traces of the virus from the body. While the UC Davis team have yet to do trials on HIV compromised individuals, they were instrumental in discovering that the pre-cancerous skin treatment PEP005. One of the researchers, Dr. Satya Dandekar, said: “We are excited to have identified an outstanding candidate for HIV reactivation and eradication that is already approved and is being used in patients. “This molecule has great potential to advance into translational and clinical studies.” Based on that success, the Emory University scientists have performed human tests on a dozen men and one woman who all responded well to the combined treatment for HIV clearance. All were being treated using traditional forms of antiretroviral therapy (ART), and had T-cell counts that ranged from a low of 264 to a high of 1100. The study group varied in ages from 45 to 63. While many HIV infected individuals tolerate their anti-retroviral drugs well, it is not unusual for these individuals to develop drug toxicity, requiring medical reevaluation and a new drug regimen to be instituted. Additionally, common side effects of continuing ART is a higher risk of developing complications including dyslipidemia, an increase in fats in the blood system and body, leading to cardiovascu-

lar disease and insulin resistance. The Emory Study was led by Guochun Jiang and reported in the PLOS, Pathogens Journal, which supplied study details to the Agenda. Despite success in ART therapy, the Emery Study concluded that, “Therapeutic cure of HIV is urgently needed (leading) to viral eradication and experimental strategies for directly targeting HIV latent reservoirs.” Trial use of the new drugs in combination with ART is expected to be done in various areas of the country within the next six months, including Florida where new infections with HIV is hitting near epidemic proportions. Florida now has the highest number of new HIV diagnoses in the nation, with Hillsborough County demonstrating the largest increase — 63 percent from 2012 to 2014. Tampa is at the epicenter of the epidemic. Pinellas County diagnoses increased 32 percent, according to recent Florida Department of Health numbers. St. Petersburg is the largest city in Pinellas County and just across Tampa Bay from the Tampa metropolitan area including Ybor City. Officials trying to understand the surge point to complacency among young people. "They were not around in the late '80s and the '90s when the HIV epidemic was at its peak, when people were dying, when the medications were not working," said Priya Rajkumar, vice president of Metro Wellness and Community Centers,” told the Tampa Tribune. "We are heading towards an epidemic again."

Republicans Leave Every LGBT Child Behind

August 05, 2015

6

By Linda Pentz Now let us praise famous Republicans, unaccustomed though this column may be to doing so. But praise is indeed due the seven Republican senators who voted in favor of Senator Al Franken’s (D-MN) Student Non-Discrimination Act (SNDA), aimed at protecting LGBT K-12 school students from discrimination and bullying. SNDA was designed “to end discrimination based on actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity in public schools.” The bill was attached to the new “Every Child Achieves Act of 2015” which replaces “No Child Left Behind.” It would have established new federal non-discrimination protections modeled after Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. Every Child Achieves passed, but Franken’s amendment scored 52 votes for and 45 against, eight shy of the necessary 60 votes to pass. This was the fifth consecutive year that SNDA had been introduced but the first time it had reached as far as an up-or-down vote in the full Senate. But thank you anyway to Senators Ayotte (R-NH), Collins (R-ME), Heller (R-NV), Johnson (R-WI), Kirk (R-IL), Murkowski (R-AK) and Portman (ROH) for crossing the aisle to protect kids. And shame on the 45 Republicans who voted no. I hope the next LGBT youth suicide — because sadly there will be a next one — weighs heavily on your consciences. What could have possessed the thinking of any reasonable adult in the Senate not to vote to protect kids and especially LGBT kids who are demonstrably the most vulnerable in our schools? One typical excuse these days for buck passing is “leave it to the states.” It’s where some Republican opponents of the Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage run to hide when asked their view on the matter. The same rationale was cited by senators opposing SNDA. But this system has proven not to work.

As Washington, DC public school teacher, Desiree Raught, wrote in a column for the Huffington Post: “Leaving anti-bullying policies up to the localities — many of which are still largely anti-LGBT in general — opens our youth to an unimaginable vulnerability. Without national legislation to hold them accountable, we simply can not trust administrators, counselors, teachers, and local school districts to be unbiased in their approach to the bullying of LGBT youth.” Nathan Smith, Director of Public Policy at the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), agrees. “The Senate is still catching up to where it seems a lot of the rest of the country is,” Smith told the Agenda. “They don’t see it as a specifically federal issue, but of course we disagree.” Non-discrimination laws are in place in 13 states and the District of Columbia, “but beyond that there are a number of states that will have a lot of trouble getting those laws passed,” Smith said. When the Agenda spoke to Raught recently, she said what outrages her the most is that the Senate, as well as school administrators in the more conservative areas of the country, “put their own moral code on an entire public policy. There is no room for personal feelings in legislating support to protect LGBT youth,” she said. Raught recounted one incident of a gay student who was harassed and eventually stabbed in the face with a screwdriver despite pre-warning his school administrator that he was under threat. The administrator went unpunished “because we have no federal law like SNDA with which to prosecute them,” she said. While GLSEN was disappointed with the outcome of the SNDA vote, they shared a broad optimism that change is close by. “Half the Senate voted for it, including some of the not most progressive Republicans,” Smith said. “That’s

remarkable and a sign of progress.” The “easiest and quickest way” to get LGBT students full protection, Smith says, “is to pass SNDA. We’re hoping that will happen the next time.” When that will be, Smith admitted, was “the million dollar question.” Meghan Maury, Senior Policy Counsel at the National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund, told the Agenda that despite SNDA’s defeat, they had also just won “a significant victory in our work to better understand the lived experiences of LGBTQ students.” That victory was the decision by the Department of Education to include gender identity and sexual orientation as separate biases in the upcoming School Survey on Crime and Safety. Maury said this was “an essential step in gathering consistent and accurate data on what LGBTQ students face in school.” The need for better data was urged by Haught and might help improve the prospect of SNDA’s passage next time. “That enormity includes a staggering 90% of transgender students who face derogatory remarks sometimes, often or frequently at school,” said Maury. At least 46% of transgender students “re-

port missing school out of fear for their safety,” she added. When Franken made it to the floor to speak for SNDA, he said: “It is a simple bill. It stands for the principle that LGBT kids have a right not to be bullied just because of who they are.” He went on: “This amendment would merely provide LGBT kids the same legal remedies available to other kids under our federal civil rights laws. It says that schools would have to listen when a parent says ‘my child isn’t safe;’ and the school has to do something about it.” In the meantime, LGBT kids will continue to be bullied and harassed and commit suicide while 45 Republican senators sleep soundly in their beds. It’s another shameful chapter in the history of a country built on the premise that all of us are all entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

AS I SEE IT

ITY THE POOR Log Cabin Republicans. Regardless of whether you agree with their political arguments or not, their opinions deserve to be heard. If only their own party would realize that fact. This week, while the first round of presidential debates is scheduled to run on the Fox network, the Republican National Committee is holding its annual summer meeting in Cleveland, Ohio. And this is where the trouble begins. The Log By Cabin RepubliRICHARD cans are a conservative group HACK that gets its name from the log cabin in which Abraham Lincoln, the foremost Republican to many in the party, was born. While they are fiscally conservative where taxes and the economy are concerned, at the same time, they believe in liberty and equality for all. They are, after all, a gay organization. Their party however is not, and is about to prove that point by throwing down an anti-equality gauntlet in the days ahead. While RNC resolutions voted on this week are non-binding, they are nevertheless a suggestion where this party is headed as it begins to set the stage for its next Presidential run. The LGBT community at large, including Log Cabin Republicans, should be outraged by two anti-gay resolutions that will be proposed this week. While they may not be adopted, they more likely will be when presented this Wednesday and Thursday, with consideration by the full committee on Friday.

August 05, 2015

Published weekly by

In the next 15 months, it will become increasingly apparent to the LGBT community at large that far from being excluded in the democratic process, you will be the deciding voice in electing our future politicians.... The first resolution is from the always amusing Michigan lawmaker Dave Agema and titled “Resolution for Balenced Sex-Ed in Schools.” In it, Agema says that Republicans “support the institution of traditional marriage”—this after the Supreme Court clearly made it national law that samesex marriages hold the same legitimacy as traditional marriage between a man and a woman. Agema suggests that in those schools “teaching the homosexual lifestyle in their sexual education class,” they should be required to include cautionary instructions on the “harmful physical aspects of the lifestyle.” The problem here is that Agema suggests that by including homosexual sex education in the classroom, teachers are encouraging students to do something that is being portrayed as both exciting and dangerous. Make no mistake. Agema is not the gay man’s friend. Nor the lesbian woman for that matter. He has gone on record as saying gays live a “filthy lifestyle,” that gays are responsible for 50% of murders in this country, and that many gays are pedophiles. Agema also has stated that gays are in favor of Obamacare because “they’re dying between 30 and 44 years old.” That misstatement of fact earned Agema a condemnation from Michigan governor Rick Snyder. The second resolution comes by way of Ross Little of Louisiana, and is

known as “To Reserve Strip and Pursue.” This proposal rebukes the recent decision by the Supreme Court validating same-sex marriage, calling on Congress to say that the ruling violates the Constitution of the United States. According to Little, the ruling is “lacking any warrant in the text, logic, structure or original understanding of the constitution,” suggesting that it ignores freedom of religion guaranteed under the First Amendment and usurps powers reserved exclusively to the states. Additionally, the resolution calls for all Federal courts to be stripped of any authority over rulings on marriage. The proposal calls on “Congress to defy the Supreme Court by passing, in accordance with the Tenth Amendment, legislation saying marriage laws

and recognition of marriages is the exclusive province of the states, although states shouldn’t be able to legalize polygamy or prohibit interracial marriage. Further, in accordance with Article III of the U.S. Constitution, the resolution seeks legislation stripping federal courts of jurisdiction over marriage issues.” Although I am certain we will hear from the Log Cabin Republicans on these resolutions, and no doubt they will spin a positive face on this derisive exercise in continuing discrimination, it must be painfully obvious to all gay Republicans, that your party is ostracizing you from the process of democratic government. In the next 15 months, it will become increasingly apparent to the LGBT community at large that far from being excluded in the democratic process, you will be the deciding voice in electing our future politicians. YOU. It is a powerful responsibility being handed to us all. It comes with enormous potential for growth and acceptance. Anything less is no long acceptable. And any party that doesn’t get that point becomes the problem, not the solution. We look to the Log Cabin Republicans to convey that truth.

LGBTQ EQUALITY: WHY POLITICAL DEBATE MATTERS

J

T

SUPREME COURT’S June 26th ruling on marriage equality has created an unprecedented national awareness of the LGBTQ community and ignited discussion and debate from sea to shining sea. And it’s only just beginning. Over the next 14 months or so, the whole issue of LGBTQ equality will take its place center stage on national debate podiums for the first time as presidential candidates and election hopefuls posture and pontificate on the By issues. This is healthy for America. PETER Communication is an amazJACKSON ing tool and we don’t do enough of it. True, we already know the arguments. There are those conservatives who would like the queers all banished to a remote island at the end of the earth and an itinerant religious segment whose hateful and hurtful rhetoric will remain unchanged. But this process of debate is necessary for us as a nation — and the fact that LGBTQ equality will be a major political issue makes it even more significant. Defeat teaches lessons and promotes change. It may take the Republicans and others who oppose legislation banning discrimination in housing and the workplace a beating at the polls to re-consider their engagement with voters on LGBTQ issues. Politicians don’t have power if they don’t get elected. And with the majority of Americans supporting marriage equality and the tenets of human rights for all, getting elected on a platform of intolerance will be increasingly difficult for politicians in this and future elections. It is somewhat predictable that in another four years, when even larger numbers of the Millennial generation (those roughly 18 to 33 years old) make their acceptance of social justice and equality felt at the polls, change will happen in a big way. HE

oss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Mutant Enemy Productions, 1997 – 2003) was one of the smartest television series in the history of television. It was full of action, occult thrills, philosophy, wit, humor, fantasy, and romance. It was complex and thoughtful and I watched it with religious devotion (and even though the series ended a dozen years ago, I still watch the old episodes with a sense of nostalgic delight). I would like to think that I loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer because I'm smart and witty, or because I possess a combination of depth and whimsy. I might have liked it because there is something erotic about vampirism. Maybe the youthful cast members made me feel young again. But I suspect it was Buffy herself that appealed to me the most. Buffy was special. She was born different than other people, but she didn't discover who she really was and what it meant until she was in her late teens. She came to realize that her difference was powerful and the world was actually better because she embraced her truth. Her unique gifts were needed in the world; and, her courage in accepting her role in life improved the lives of others. And yet, some were afraid of her difference. Others hated her for her difference. She often felt the need to "hide" her gifts from those who might not

Artist Trey Opp in his studio with a few pieces from his new collection.

The amazing talent of Trey Opp

Photography by DENNIS DEAN

Bringing art to life By ANDREW SAUS II

“You know how New York City is called ‘The City that Never Sleeps’? Well, this was ‘The City that Always Sleeps.’” That’s how local artist Trey Opp jokingly recalls the small North Dakotan town in which he was raised. But as he’ll tell you, he might have been born a small-town boy, but he was built for the big city. Hailing from a close-knit family, Trey is one of four brothers (including a twin

named Trex) whose names all begin with the letter ‘T’). Trey is a personable, passionate, and driven young man who, when bundled together with the affable charm that is wholly unique to mid-westerners, and his artistic talent, is a charismatic character who is always ‘on.’ For young Trey, the monotonous nature of living in a small mid-western town became much too stifling for the outgoing and creative individual.

Setting his sights on Minneapolis, he applied to the Art Institute and hit his first real roadblock: a tuition price-tag in excess of $120,000. With this knowledge, Trey had to make the decision that would change his life: he picked up and relocated to the sunny shores of southern Florida. 40 JOBS Once here he applied to over 40 jobs with little success. Determined to get the ball rolling,

he applied for his personal trainer certification which earned him his current employment with Bodytek. He credits his job as a fitness trainer and manager at Bodytek Fitness (and his relationship with owner Mike Verdugo) with rekindling his passion and desire to begin creating art again. He says the support of “Bodytek, Mike, and the people around me, made me feel whole and inspired me to start

/floridaagenda /floridaagenda floridaagenda.com

before he allowed himself to move on to the rest of it, and even then went back for further revision. The inspiration for his works comes from an unadulterated love for the medium itself. He admitted that although some of the subjects of the pieces have been suggested by others, he prefers to be inspired organically, which gives him a deeper, stronger connection to the work. That personal connection “needs” to be there, he insisted. Is the goal fame? Fortune? A rabid fan base? Laughing, Trey admitted that while those are nice, appreciation is all he’s after . He wants his work to be “eye-catching and felt,” for the audience to walk away thinking that what they had just

seen “looked so real, that they felt they could reach in and touch it.” He loves to create art for art’s sake. He’d “rather spend time doing two-pieces instead of mass producing for a quick sell.” THE ULTIMATE Though reluctant to part with his work, he admits that he’d sell something like his “pop icon” collection as one unit to a place, “like Hard Rock” that would prominently display them. He also became quite animated when he told us of his dream of featuring at Art Basel, the annual mega art show in Miami Beach featuring top artists from around the globe, which he considers “the ultimate.” Trey wants to let budding artists know to, “Never, never, never give up” and reminds them that practice and

consistency are key. Keep doing it over and over. Multiple layers are needed to make what you do perfect. You need to love what you do, be passionate about it, don’t be scared of trying new things, and to “go all out, every time.” Trey (a/k/a Topp Artist) describes himself as a “jack-of-all-trades, and master of none.” Besides painting as a hobby, he’s also skilled in construction, website building, photoshop (also self-taught), and interior decorating. Trivia bit: he watched the second season of HGTV’s Design Star, unaware that one of the contestants on the show (Mike Verdugo) would later become his boyfriend, whose gym (Bodytek Fitness) would also serve as gallery space for Trey’s paintings.

August 05, 2015

again.” Since his move, he’s experienced his most prolific period of artistic creation. Looking over the art he has displayed at his home, it’s unbelievable when he describes his talent and hobby as self-taught. But is it destiny? As far back as he can remember, creating art has been a constant in his life and he says that “every generation [in his family] has an artist” and now he’s taking up the mantle. A charcoal drawing of an eerily lifelike owl was among one of the first serious pieces he created. It evolved into a full charcoal line, and then on to his passion project. Tentatively titled “The Pop Icon Collection” it’s a series of some of the most iconic figures of popular music from the past several decades. There’s Elvis, David Bowie, Nicki Minaj, and Madonna. Future planned additions include gay saints such as Cyndi Lauper and Cher. He said the final step for these paintings is to cover them in resin to give them a glossy look to enhance the colors’ vividity and give them a more realistic appearance befitting of the rendered artists’ larger-than-life legacies. GENESIS Each portrait has a different genesis and conception (“that takes the longest”). For his Madonna piece, he started from a black and white still shot of a live performance from which he removed the microphone and re-envisioned the entire environment. This is part of a method in which he takes preexisting images and completely re-imagines them, utilizing artistic license and making them entirely his own. Trey’s works stand as a testament to his uncanny creativity and talent, but his dazzling smile couldn’t hide the subtle blush as he humbly copped to being a perfectionist. Much like Michael Jackson (one of Trey’s subjects in another piece that this writer was quite taken with), he doesn’t like to display or show a piece during its creation, preferring to wait until it’s completely finished – and “perfect.” He told us that he reworked the eyes on his Bowie piece innumerable times

Former Broadcaster Craig James Files Lawsuit Against Fox Sports

Married West Point Grads Attacked in SoHo

Craig James DALLAS (AP) - Former college football broadcaster Craig James has filed a lawsuit against Fox Sports saying he was fired because he had expressed opposition to gay marriage. The former running back for Southern Methodist University and the New England Patriots filed a lawsuit Monday in Dallas County that seeks at least $100,000 in damages. Fox hired him in August 2013 only to fire him days later.

Photo: texastribune.com

James is seeking a jury trial to hear claims against the network that include breach of contract and discrimination. A Dallas attorney for Fox did not immediately return a call seeking comment about the lawsuit. James last year filed a complaint with the Texas Workforce Commission accusing Fox of firing him because he spoke as a U.S. Senate candidate about his opposition to gay marriage.

MANHATTAN--A 40-year-old homophobe shouted anti-gay slurs at the first gay men to be married at West Point Military Academy before attacking one, and punching him in the face last Sunday. The victim, Daniel Lennox-Choate, 30, and his husband, Larry LennoxChoate, 31, were shopping in a SoHo bodega before the incident, according to Larry’s Facebook post. The assailant punched Daniel, and his husband rushed to his defense, Larry wrote on Facebook. “He left covered in his own blood with his tail between his legs after I handled the situation and tossed him in the street like the coward loser he is,” Larry’s Facebook post reads. “The hate crimes division of the NYPD is on the case and we have full faith a positive outcome will follow.”

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing, police said. The victim graduated from West Point in 2007, two years before his husband. The two married in 2013. “We refuse to be victims and are thankful we can defend ourselves, but are saddened by the fact that idiots like this guy might not pick two guys who went through Plebe Boxing next time,” Larry Lennox-Choate said. “Aside from one fat lip and a sore punching arm, we are fine.” Daniel has a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard and served in Iraq and Afghanistan. According to NYPD data, attacks against gay people were down 20% for the year. There were 43 incidents through July 26 this year, compared to 54 for the same period last year.

church union. Underwood died a year before a federal judge ordered Pennsylvania to conduct same-sex marriages and recognize those performed earlier. Fritsch’s ruling Wednesday appears to extend that decision to include earlier common-law unions, at least in Bucks County. Family lawyer Helen Casale (KUH’-sal) says the ruling is creating plenty of buzz in the legal community as gay clients pursue death benefits, divorce settlements and other claims.

Northwestern Gets $17.2 million Grant for HIV Research CHICAGO (AP) - Northwestern University has been given a $17.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to invent, develop and test implants that could deliver drugs for up to a year to people at high risk of HIV infection. The Sustained Long-Acting Protection Against HIV program that’s funded by the NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases will bring together scientists and clinical investigators from Northwestern’s Feinberg School of

Medicine, McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science and the Kellogg School of Management. A news release from Northwestern says such a system would be particularly helpful because those at a higher risk of being infected do not always follow the other methods of avoiding infection such as abstaining from sex, wearing condoms or taking daily doses of antiretroviral drugs.

ing, Kansas banned same-sex marriage and did not recognize such marriages from other states. Brownback has been a vocal supporter of the state’s ban. But the state allowed gays and lesbians to serve as foster parents, as individuals. The department began its review of foster care policies after Republican Gov. Sam Brownback this month transferred the licensing of foster homes to it from the Department of Health and Environment. DCF already had administered placements and services for foster children through two private contractors. About 6,500 children were in foster care at the end of June, though many of them had been placed with relatives. The state has about 2,500 licensed foster homes. In response to questions about gaymarried couples serving together as foster parents, Freed said, “We’re leaving that question for later.” Later, in a follow-up email, she added: “We are still in the early stages of conducting a long and thorough process of review and deliberation of the foster care licensing program. The health and welfare of children remain our top priority, as well as providing them a stable environment.”

JOHN HANNA AP Political Writer TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - A Kansas Department of Children and Families official said Friday that the state will continue to allow qualified single adults to serve as foster parents for abused and neglected children, but she said her agency isn’t ready to say whether it will allow married same-sex couples to do so. The department has faced questions about its plans because it said earlier this month that it was conducting a broad review of foster care policies. Douglas County District Judge Peggy Carr Kittel wrote a regional DCF official, asking whether it planned to limit foster parenting to only married couples and how such a move would apply to same-sex couples, given the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage across the nation. Theresa Freed, a spokeswoman for the child welfare agency, told The Associated Press that department officials “haven’t changed any foster care licensing policies.” The department did not issue a public statement. “Single adults will not be excluded from being foster care parents,” Freed said. “That was never being considered.” Before the U.S. Supreme Court rul-

Dave Cook

MIAMI BEACH, FL--Long-time LGBTQ community advocate Dave Cook has been named Executive Director for the Eighth Annual Miami Beach Gay Pride parade and festival, according to Mark Fernandes, who is returning as the Chairman of the Pride organizing committee. Cook replaces outgoing Executive Director Ivan Cano who has left to become the CEO of World OutGames Miami 2017. Miami Beach Gay Pride will take place April 8 – 10, 2016. “With the exponential growth of Pride over the past seven years, the responsibilities for producing an event of this magnitude have also increased,” Fernandes said. “To ensure next year’s Pride is the best event ever for the community, we’ve brought in Dave Cook who is not only well connected and respected in the community, but also possesses a wealth of experience producing special events.” Cook will be responsible for the overall production of the three-day Miami Beach Gay Pride 2016, everything from sponsorships and parade coordination to festival layout and volunteer coordination, Fer-

nandes said. Previously, Cook was a special event consultant working on events such as Miami Beach Gay Pride; the Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce Galas; National LGBTQ Task Force Creating Change Conferences, Miami Recognition Dinners and Winter Party Festivals, Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festivals, the Pink and Purple Gala and many others. Since its inception in 2009, Miami Beach Gay Pride has grown from a neighborhood event to an event on the global stage with A-list celebrities such as Mario Lopez as Grand Marshal in 2015, Gloria Estefan as Grand Marshal in 2014 and Adam Lambert performing in 2013. Attendance has grown as well. An estimated 15,000 spectators turned out for the first Pride parade in 2009; an estimated 130,000 attended the event in 2015, which attracted not only South Floridians, but also visitors from throughout the world. Miami Beach Gay Pride is produced with the support of the Miami Beach Visitors and Convention Authority. For more information, visit www.miamibeachgaypride.com.

Favorite Fitness Fallacies Exposed!

CLIFF NOTES By Cliff Dunn

Roku Continues To Rock You

It’s gratifying when a product that you use and enjoy continues to provide value through the years. One terrific example has to be the Roku digital media player, which provides over-the-top content (OTT) in the form of streaming channels. (For those coming late to the game, over-the-top content refers to delivery of audio, video, and other media over the Internet without the involvement of a multiple-system operator of cable or direct-broadcast satellite television systems.) Simply put, Roku is a data box that comes equipped with preloaded apps from the most popular providers of streaming content. Roku “broadcasts” data (the video stream) via a wired or Wi-Fi connection that’s sent to an Internet router. The device can be connected to any television or other device with input connections. Both free and subscription streaming sources (known on Roku as “channels”) are available, including the most popular names likes Netflix, HBO Go, YouTube, Amazon Instant Video, Watch ESPN, Hulu Plus, and many others. The Roku Channel Store allows you to add or remove channels. It’s noteworthy than in an extremely competitive field last year—including names like Apple and Amazon—Roku was 2014’s top-selling streaming platform.

Roku lets you search through the widest selection of channels, choosing your criteria by actor, title, or director, through the magic of remote, Roku mobile app, or the all new voice search. Roku recently added voice search to the $99 Roku 3 along with other features, including voice search, point-anywhere Wi-Fi control, and an improved headphone jack for private listening. (For the more frugalminded, the original Roku 1 offers and all of the pep without the bells and whistles on the improved remote, and comes in at a mere $49.) With the Roku 3, the upgraded remote uses Wi-Fi Direct (which doesn’t require line-of-sight to operate, meaning you can hide the Roku 3 box pretty much anywhere, and the remote will work just fine). The “Return” button on previous Roku remotes has been replaced by a magnifying glass that prompts the voice search dialog. Because Roku doesn’t sell its own content, its interface doesn’t prioritize one source of content over another, and you can customize Roku’s interface to place the apps you want. Like a smartphone, Roku lets you rearrange app tiles on the Home page, and remove ones you don’t use. For the money (in general $49, $69, or $70) you can still call Roku a value, and mean it.

CREEP OF THE WEEK

By D’Anne Witowski

David Wells Good news for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and intersex kids who get arrested in Kentucky! Well, I mean, bad news to have been arrested, but at least there’s a policy that forbids the Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) personnel, including volunteers, from using “derogatory language in a manner that conveys bias towards or hatred of the LGBTQI community” and telling “LGBTQI juveniles that they are abnormal, deviant, sinful or that they can or should change their sexual orientation or gender identity.” When I first heard of this, I had to double-check the state. Kentucky, really? Yes, Kentucky! (My apologies to the Bluegrass State for doubting, but y’all do keep voting for Mitch McConnell). To anyone who volunteers to work with juvenile offenders, let me first say, “Good for you!” Too often society writes these young people off as “bad kids” and once a young person finds him or herself in the system, it’s really hard to get out. And a lot of these kids are LGBT. According to The Center for American Progress, “Though gay and transgender youth represent just 5 percent to 7 percent of the nation’s overall youth population, they compose 13 percent to 15 percent of those currently in the juvenile justice system.” Clearly only a really terrible person would say, “You know what, I want to work with juvenile offenders and I want to tell the LGBT ones how gross and sinful they are as is my right as an American Christian.” Or so argues Baptist counselor David Wells (of the Pleasant View Baptist Church in Breckinridge County, Kentucky) who, with the help of the gay-hating Liberty Council, is suing the DJJ because they won’t let him gaybash the inmates with his “ministry.” According to Liberty Council’s Mat Staver, LGBT youth involved in the criminal justice system are a bunch of sex-crimers anyway, so it’s totally unfair to Wells that he can’t call it like

David Wells

photo: rawstory.com

he sees it. “Many juveniles are in DJJ custody because of sexual crimes,” said Staver in a July 24 press release. “David Wells must be able to discuss what the Bible says about matters of sexuality with the juveniles he is trying to help.” Yeah, because telling a kid, “You’re in here because you’re a damaged perv,” is Biblical healing. Staver continues, in complete hysterics, “To remove the Bible from a pastor’s hands is like removing a scalpel from a surgeon’s hands. Without it, they cannot provide healing.” Let me just say, “All the nopes.” Any bozo can pick up a Bible and claim to be a pastor. Being a surgeon, however, requires a medical degree, which means a lot of training and belief in science. By the time young people end up in the criminal justice system, they have already had more than their fair share of hurt. Being an LGBT kid sadly means an additional layer of pain. So if Wells isn’t willing to sign a piece of paper that says, “I won’t use my position of authority as a minister to further victimize these kids,” then the DJJ is within its rights to say GTFO. And good riddance.

ger can also exacerbate feelings of anxiety associated with financial concerns, job performance, and life in general. In addition, harboring hostility takes its toll on friends, family, spouses, and co-workers as one by one they are turned off by your angry behavior. So what can you do about anger in your life? Know your limitations. In the heat of battle, it’s easy to blow up and say things you’ll later regret. Instead, remove yourself from the situation immediately before losing your cool. Breathe deeply and take a walk. Gather your concerns and needs and when you are ready, confront the situation or person clearly and directly without losing control. Exercise and physical activity are great ways to blow off excess steam and reduce stress. Pumping iron, taking a swim, going for a run, practicing martial arts, are all enjoyable and healthy activities that will build muscle, help your heart, and allow you to release anger. For many people who are dealing with anger, it’s a lifelong process of learning how to let go and live peacefully. Practicing yoga can build flexibility and help you to relax. Humor, as long as it isn’t cutting, can lighten and diffuse heated situations. Guided meditation, visualization and deep breathing techniques can help many overcome hostility. And if your anger is still out of control, then have the wisdom to seek professional help.

Don’t allow anger to rule your life. Learn to chill and you’ll live longer. Tom Bonanti @ trainertomb@aol.com

I grew up in a home with a hot tempered Italian father and a stoic German-English mother. Dad lost his cool regularly, explosively. Mom disapproved of his conduct and let us know that anger was unacceptable. It was meant to be held in silently, bravely and never expressed. As a result of this stellar upbringing I found myself to be a morose young man with a host of anger issues. I’ve come a long way. I’d like to share some things about anger, how it helps you, how it harms you, and how you can handle it in a healthy way. First, anger is not a bad emotion. It can rouse you from complacency, and make you take a stand when you experience injustice. Anger can be healthy if it causes you to confront issues and handle them in an honest way (i.e., dialogue, realistic compromise, etc.). Anger can actually help you think more rationally in times of crisis. It is only when it is held onto and suppressed for long periods of time that it can prove to be explosive, even fatal. Here are a few negative effects of anger. Prolonged and internalized anger can cause all kinds of health hazards. According to physicians and psychologists, the chance of having a major heart attack doubles within one hour of just one short, angry meltdown. In addition, elevated blood pressure during anger puts you at greater risk of stroke by causing blood clots to form, traveling to the brain or causing brain hemorrhage. Anger has been linked to heart disease, type II diabetes, colo-rectal cancer, and an overall weakened and compromised immune system. Besides wreaking havoc with your physical health, anger can cause any number of psychological problems. It has been said that depression is nothing more than anger turned inward. Depression causes you to feel listless, helpless and ultimately hopeless. An-

Get your bad boys on the move and swimming in abundance by feeding them the foods they need for creation and survival. We’ve all heard about Oysters as a way to increase virility. As luck would have it, oysters also increase your sperm level thanks to their concentration of zinc. Black-Eyed Peas and Asparagus are packed with folic acid, which is vital to DNA/RNA development. Dark Chocolate is loaded with amino acid L-Arginine HCL. Count on L-Arginine to improve blood flow south of the border, which is a good thing when you’re talking erections and sperm count. Eat Bananas and rest assured that you’ll be getting the amount of bromelain to jump start your production of testosterone, a hormone in short supply as we age. (Additionally, bromelain will stave off arthritis, but that’s for another column). And finally never underestimate the power of Pumpkin Seeds. They are delicious, cheap, and packed full of iron, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, copper, and manganese to pep up production in the testes. Finally, my personal favorite: suck on some Watermelon every evening, and imbibe life-altering Lycopene. An inch-thick wedge per day has the ability to boast the quality of your sassy swimmers by over a third. Combined together, you’ll pump up your sperm—both in quantity and mobility, just in time to start your new family. The Supreme Court agrees. It’s what newlyweds do!

“Weird Al” Yankovic Music satirist “Weird Al” Yankovic has somehow remained relevant for almost forty decades in the industry. That might be because his fun send-ups of both popular music and popular music videos include equal amounts wit and sophomoric humor to appeal to a wide range of demographics. His latest album Mandatory Fun was his first number-one album, proving that the guy’s still got it. His concerts are known for utilizing the same costumes seen in his wacky videos. 8:00 p.m. Hard Rock Live Orlando. 6050 Universal Blvd. Orlando. 32819.

Davie Rd. Davie. 33314.
