WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

Franklin Graham

...not poverty, gun violence, climate change or war [Franklin] Graham, apparently God’s spokesperson, wants people to know that love, mutual attraction, honesty and happiness are intolerable to the Almighty. And, he seems to think that is a compelling case for embracing said psychotic deity. I don’t know what’s wrong with Mr. Graham, but I am certain his neighborhood pharmacist has the cure for it on the shelf. Meanwhile, not poverty, gun violence, climate change, or war...but marriage equality is his biggest concern. I believe that officially qualifies him as a terrible person. – Rev. Dr. Durrell Watkins, senior pastor of The Sunshine Cathedral,

Rev. Dr. Durrell Watkins

Hillary says she gets it

This Christian baker believes love is love It doesn’t bother me one bit or another. It’s a wedding cake, and if they feel like they love each other and want to get married, more power to them. As Christians, I think that we should be kindhearted and show the love of God to people, not to be judging what they’re doing. – Christian baker Ron Zammit, in Sarasota, Fla., interviewed on ABC TV affiliate WWSM.

By Adam Cohen WHAT IS HUCKABEE’S PROBLEM? Why is Mike Huckabee absolutely obsessed with gay people? I mean over-the-top obsessed? Kim Davis, Rainbow Doritos, yada, yada, yada... is he hiding a secret? I mean, I’ve seen photos of his wife, and she could totally be smuggling a penis under those Dress Barn off-the-rack suits... SOUR GRAPES Have you noticed that ugly people are the ones against same-sex marriage?

TOO HOT 2BSTR8 God, I’ve been watching Jerry Maguire on TV and sometimes you forget what a good-looking talented actor Tom Cruise was before Scientology took over his life and he married that transgender man, Katie Holmes, in that big Italian castle. JUST CALL IN SICK AGAIN I’ve achieved the perfect nirvana – the layering of comforters and sheets on my bed feels like my fat a** is sleeping on a cloud, made of feathers from the wings of angels. I don’t wanna get up to face the world! GOOD TIMES Sometimes a song in the bathroom at a restaurant just takes you back...in my case it was Boyz 2 Men’s “End of the Road” in the bathroom at Bimini Twist. It was like 10th grade all over again. BLOODY HELL You know your week is off to an awesome start when you cut yourself shaving and draw enough gushing blood to expect an appearance in your bathroom by David Caruso (Lieutenant Horatio Caine on the TV series CSI: Miami), putting on his sunglasses and saying some cheesy, cringe-inducing line in the background. GONE IN A FLASH A.C. Slater is hawking toenail fungus medicine? Morgan Fairchild pushing online burial plots? My childhood is dead. THAT’S KINDA HOT Wow! I am getting so old. I had to borrow somebody’s readers to read some of the small print on the screen. I look like the lesbian love child of Jamie Lee Curtis and Harry Potter!

Hillary Clinton

We’re going to face some ridiculousness, especially from our friends in the GOP... I want you to know that I get it, I see the injustices and the dangers that you and your family still face, and I’m running for president to end them once and for all. – Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, addressing the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) annual gala in Washington, DC. She warned that progress on equal rights can be undone.

I usually keep my opinions off of Facebook, but not today. I am so angry I am in tears about this latest mass murder. There is no reason anyone needs to own a semi-automatic gun unless you are in the military or law enforcement. I don’t care abouit your rights – they need to be taken away from everyone. Those guns are designed for one thing only: murder! I want all guns registered just like your car. Boo hoo if you think I’m wrong. When the Constitution was written, they had muskets. They could not [have foreseen] what horrible ways of murder were in the future. – David Schock Fort Lauderdale

Same-sex marriage is a sin. God made us male and female, and then to say that marriage is between two men or two women, this is sin and the Obama administration is celebrating sin and they are pushing sin. –Franklin Graham, son of famed evangelist Billy Graham, and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, telling The Blaze that same-sex marriage is the issue that concerns him the most in the U.S. today.

Who needs semi-automatic weapons?

PRIDE FORT LAUDERDALE SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Jaclyn St. James: A Champion for Change

By Diego Wyatt as well known as some of them. I’ve worked very hard to be who I am in this community with no help from anyone. I have supported local businesses, promoted clubs, promoted myself, reinvented myself, carried out fundraising for events and tried to change laws. If this girl can do it, just think if they all got together and fought for our community. The drag world, I feel, has gotten very selfish since its beginning and I see more and more negativity among other drag queens as well as other people within the gay community. We need to come together and stop fighting against each other. We can do so much good for everyone this way.

THE AGENDA INTERVIEW

aught up ale imperson-

Known as the FIrst Lady of Wilton Manors, female impersonator Jaclyn St. James has devoted her life to empowering the LGBT community. We caught up with the community-minded diva and host of her very own YouTube show to discuss her local activism, the role of drag artists today and how female impersonation has changed her life.

14

ST. JAMES: I recently went full force in getting pride banners for our town’s Stonewall Event. I wanted rainbow banners and fought with the city to have that for pride. After the banner was designed, I pushed the limits by contacting everyone in City Hall as well as the mayor of St Petersburg to find out how or through which channels I needed to go to make this happen. I wasn’t going to stop until I had them up waving proudly. Not only was my one voice heard by hundreds, it was heard by thousands. I got the banners raised announcing the city’s event and I had pride flags along the street. I have never gotten any kind of recognition from anyone other than my community, but I wasn’t looking for that. The pride I got on my way back and forth to work every day was enough. I saw those pride flags waving and the main flag at City Hall. I know I was responsible for that.

October 08, 2015

AGENDA: You’ve been responsible for a lot of amazing changes locally. Can you tell us about the achievement you’re most proud of?

Q:What local changes would you like to see happen next? A: I would love to see pride flag banners up year round, being that many of the businesses here are gay-owned and operated in the downtown area. And it is inexcusable that the main pride flag at City

The drag world, I feel, has gotten very selfish since its beginning and I see more and more negativity among other drag queens as well as other people within the gay community. Hall has been taken down. What are our officials thinking? We should be proud of being ranked top 5 in the US for gays per capita and we should show our spirit. I wish the community would start taking action instead of waiting for others to do something. I would like to see the drag community out there doing more with the community. I also would love to see more fundraising for issues other than HIV/ AIDS, pets and SunServe. Moreover, we need to address the safety issues of Wilton Manors, such as crosswalks and police patrol. Q: What role do you feel drag artists play in the LGBT community—on stage and off? A: I feel that the local drag queens have a louder voice than me and can do more with it than I can. Don’t get me wrong, I have a voice but I am not

Q: How has female impersonation changed your life? A: I have always been that shy guy just waiting for my time to shine. When I am Shawn, I am very timid, meek and quiet. I hate that about me, but I can’t seem to change that. Nobody saw Shawn, he was just there. When I became Jaclyn, I completely changed. I am more open to people and I have enjoyed being the center of attention at times. I never really let people into Shawn’s life, but Jaclyn lets everyone in. When Shawn walks into the club, he walks in. That’s it. When Jaclyn walks into the club, heads turn, my name is called out, people come up to me, kiss me and take pictures with me. It’s like a red carpet affair and who wouldn’t love that? It’s a feeling of being a celebrity. This is Shawn shining through the lip gloss. Drag has made me come out of my shell even more and now I can be that social butterfly I’ve always wanted to be. I just do it in a dress and a lot of accessories. Q: What inspires you to continue doing female impersonation? A: At first, it was our recently departed Sal DeFalco from Hunters Bar and Studio 54. I walked into the bar back in 2009 and Sal automatically became a friend. He loved Jaclyn. I really can’t explain the bond we made after these years of promoting Club Boom and Hunters. It was a relationship, a mutual understanding of one another and a love of drag and celebrities. Sal always made Jaclyn feel like a celebrity in Wilton Manors. He encouraged me to continue when I was down and pushed me to put on my big girl panties and get going. ‘The world needs Jaclyn,’ he’d say. After his death, I didn’t think I could do it anymore. I attended his funeral as Jaclyn, not for the attention but because I felt he would have loved that. I made that my tribute to him. Along with that, it’s the passion for making a change in my community. Jaclyn’s known and wanted and she can make a difference in people’s lives—everything I strived for when I was creating her.

Pride: The world is watching

Y

October 08, 2015

PETER JACKSON President | Group Executive Publisher

This weekend, Fort Lauderdale and adjacent Wilton Manors are celebrating their second Pride event of the year.

es, we have a lot to be prideful of, and certainly an equal amount for which to be thankful. The bounty of legislative victories was, of course, topped off by the Supreme Court decision to legalize same-sex marriage across the country last June. For many, that moment remains a pinnacle of celebration and achievement. And while we in By the LGBT Richard community have every Hack right to rejoice in this our moment of triumph, we must continue to realize those victories come at a price. The world is watching us with intense scrutiny, waiting for our mascara to smear in the true light of day. It’s rather amazing how well gays and lesbians and the transgendered among us have performed in the limelight. Other than the occasional stumble-down drunk, and the isolated live assassination of a news reporter and cameraman on television by a disgruntle ex-employee/ hustler, the LGBTs has shown themselves to be strong, intelligent, concerned, and articulate.

Perhaps for that reason, we’re being given a lot of credit these days. Take Bryan Fischer for example. The member of the hate group American Family Association said that he felt that gays were responsible for causing all the rain we’ve been experiencing lately in this country. Speaking of flooding in the Longhorn State, Fischer said on his radio show, “If you’re going to attribute the flooding in Texas to some kind of supernatural cause, you can make a geographical connection between the flooding and the practice of the occult and witchcraft and the embrace of homosexuality. That’s where the disaster is being felt the worse. Sodom and Gomorrah – it was a natural disaster, but it was very localized. It wiped out those two towns, it didn’t wipe out the entire region, it just wiped out those two cities where homosexuality had been embraced.” Ahhh, Sodom and Gomorrah. Forget that it wasn’t rain that destroyed both Biblical cities. According to the book of Genesis, that distinction belongs to “fire and brimstone.” But no matter, just the mention of Sodom and Gomorrah is enough to give anyone cause to pause. Lawmakers in Blount County, Tennessee, had the cities on their minds as well. They petitioned the eternal Almighty this week for compassion and restraint for fear that God would destroy the world now that same-sex marriage is le-

gal. It made perfectly good sense to Blount County commissioner Karen Miller in her attempt to condemn judicial tyranny. “We adopt this Resolution before God that He pass us by in His coming wrath and not destroy our county as He did Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighboring cities. . . We adopt this resolution begging His favor in light of the fact that we have been forced to comply and recognize that the State of Tennessee, like so many other God-fearing States, may have fallen prey to a lawless judiciary in legalizing what God and the Bible expressly forbids”—i.e., same sex marriage, but don’t say the words out loud, or, at least not in Tennessee. The “God Hates Fags” church— Westboro Baptist—brought the Almighty into the picture as well as it announced its intention to picket the National Weather Service. The very same weather service that’s had it hands full the past week with Hurricane Joaquin. If you can believe Westboro Baptist, we’ll see a whole lot more of those ‘caines, thanks to gays. “America crossed the Rubicon when, by force of law, [they] permitted same-sex marriage.” This in turn apparently upset the “weather rules,” which in turn caused extra work for the NWS. “Westboro Baptist Church will picket the National Weather Service to remind them that ONLY by God’s mercy and power do you

gather intelligence on His weather.” Like the idiots they are, this group is planning on protesting in Norman, Oklahoma, at the National Weather Center at the University of Oklahoma. While it is a local branch reporting to the NWS, it is not its headquarters, which are located in Silver Springs, Maryland. It’s not even a regional headquarters. One of those is in Kansas City, which is a whole lot closer to Westboro’s home town of Topeka, Kansas, than Norman, Oklahoma, ever is. But let’s be clear, the picketers from Westboro Baptist don’t care about the weather as much as they care about publicity. They are picketing in Norman to attract attention from the Society of Environmental Journalists who are having their 25th annual convention there. Ultimately, it will all come back onto the shoulders of the LGBT community who have, after all, brought it on themselves with all this celebration of pride and redemption. So please rejoice this weekend in Fort Lauderdale. We’ve earned it. And should it by chance rain? Well, that’s why God created rainbow umbrellas. Just ask the National Weather Service. Richard Hack is the award-winning author of 26 books, and the Vice President of Content for Multimedia Platforms’ publications.

une 26, 2015, a little more than three short months ago, was the very tight 5-4 Supreme Court ruling which made it possible for same-gender couples to marry no matter where they live in the United States. It BY REV. is pretty incredible to think we as JOEL gays and lesbians SLOTNICK were ruled equal in all of America to stay and/or get married to the one we love and want to spend the rest of our life with. It appears a good portion of Americans feel the same way. Heaven knows, many of us have fought to be accepted and treated equal - not just in marriage, but in everyday life. Why doesn’t all of America feel that way? Why shouldn’t we be accepted by ev-

eryone to be who we were created to be; who we are - Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer. One reason, we have people like the infamous Kim Davis. She continues using religious freedom to the point it is giving (many) people of faith a field day to be “anti”, and those who have a disdain for religion, it pushes them further away. Most recently, was Kim’s behind closed door meeting with the Pope. After his whirlwind touring in parts of the USA, the meeting has for all intents and purposes, nullified any positive feelings they may have had for him. Personally, though very disappointed in the meeting and having a very different outlook on the issue than many I know, I haven’t totally lost faith in some of the intentions the Pope has. But how did this woman come to have this meeting when there are so many others who are truly more deserving of such an audience. Since the Vatican doesn’t comment on behind door meetings such as this, I also have great reservation when it comes to believ-

ing anything Kim tells the media as to what actually happened. After all, who is going to either confirm or deny what she’s saying? There are both people I know and have been reading about who are fuming at the mixed messages the Pope is sending. Some have gone to great lengths to call him a variety of names to prove their upset, confusion, hatred or whatever you want to call it. Yes, he is supposed to be a person we put in a higher standard and expect more from, but it also brings a question to mind: Do we put our friends or those we associate with; people who directly impact our lives, to that same high standard? It is natural for people to stand up to their personal beliefs and principles. Some do it at any cost. Places like Chik-Fil-A, Barilla, Auto-Zone, Cracker Barrel, Domino’s, Dish Network and WalMart (to name a few) in some way or another have voiced their anti-gay message whether it be in word, hiring practices, lack of benefits or by supporting anti-gay organizations.

Yet, we all have friends or know people we associate with who are patrons of these businesses - even work for them and we accept all of them in our lives and seem to overlook it. Why? Why do we “blow it off” when it comes to the people in our lives who may go against what we believe is right or stand for in principle, yet, want to call out people like Kim Davis, the Pope or any other person(s) for going against the very same things? Do we need to step back and take a look at our reactions before we go after another for theirs? We wouldn’t want to accuse someone of having double standards if we leave ourselves open to being accused of doing the same thing. After all, actions speak louder than words.

CAPITOL BEAT STRAIGHT TALK ABOUT LGBT RIGHTS FROM HILLARY CLINTON Politicians who are running for president come under considerable scrutiny for what many niche audiences suspect could just be lip service.

?

ARE THEY PLAYING TO THE CROWD OF THE HOUR JUST TO GET OUR VOTES? DO THEY REALLY MEAN IT?

October 08, 2015

20

WHERE DO THEY REALLY STAND? IS THAT PLACE DIFFERENT PRIVATELY THAN IT IS PUBLICLY?

N

o candidate has had to confront this accusation quite as often as Hillary Clinton. As someone with a genuinely meaty political track record, there is plenty of material for opponents to seize upon. The recent flurry of emails that revealed her earlier more BY cautious views LINDA on LGBT PENTZ have been brandished by rivals as further evidence of her alleged lack of integrity on the issue. Never mind that those emails were from 2011 and that it’s where she stands now that matters. “Everyone evolves,” said an eager supporter awaiting her speech Saturday morning when Clinton appeared before a packed crowd the Mayflower Hotel here in Washington, DC. There at the invitation of the Human Rights Campaign, Clinton took ownership of her personal right of passage during a 27-minute speech before HRC staff and supporters, many of them chanting her name and sporting stickers with her logo. “You’ve helped to

photo:nationofchange.com

change a lot of minds, including mine,” she said, “and I am personally very grateful for that.” Clinton also addressed the issue of tokenism, of treating LGBT voters as if their lives “are just a political bargaining chip,” as she referred to the practice. But she assured her raucously enthusiastic audience that “those of you who know me know that’s not me. I’ve been fighting alongside you and others for equal rights and I’m just getting warmed up.” If Clinton is only in the warm-up phase of her LGBT advocacy, then it’s an evolution that should not be dismissed. After all, rather than get down on people when they finally come on board, shouldn’t we welcome them with a glass of champagne? However, while Clinton is clearly an ally, some have worried that she is too tepid, too lacking in proLGBT zeal compared to would-be candidate Joe Biden and fellow Democratic contenders, Bernie Sanders and Martin O’Malley, who have proven and longer-standing track records of LGBT support. As commentator Michealangelo Signorile wrote in August, Clinton needs to speak “forcefully and passionately to the issues.” On Saturday, Clinton came as close to forceful and passionate as she’s been on LGBT rights.

It’s a delicate dance for women who, when trying to be forceful can instead be labeled “shrill.” If we are passionate, then we are too “emotional,” which can be code for “unbalanced.” Women are not given the same leeway as men when they stand on a public platform. It’s not fair and it’s not right, but it’s a reality. And, as a colleague who has covered many presidential campaigns over the years, told me, Hillary is a policy wonk. She’s a serious stateswoman, not a showoff. Trump, she most definitely isn’t. So what we got on Saturday morning might not have been rabble-rousing, but to most ears at least it sounded genuinely sincere, her words coming from the heart, not just the script. In fact, there was no script. Clinton spoke directly to her audience unprompted and she knew exactly what she wanted to say. “I see the injustices that you and your families still face,” she told the crowd, “and I am running for president to end them once and for all.” As president, Clinton said, she will “push to cut off federal funding for any public child welfare agency that discriminates against LGBT parents. There is no excuse, none, for hurting children and families like this.” She will restore honorable

and I hope many of you will be with me when I sign it into law.” But of course, as Clinton reminded us, “we’re not there yet. There are still public officials doing everything in their power to interfere with your rights,” she said, pointing her finger most directly at Mike Huckabee who she lambasted as “a Republican candidate for president standing in the courthouse door in Kentucky calling on people to join him in resisting the Supreme Court ruling, celebrating a county clerk who’s breaking the law by denying other Americans their constitutional right.” There was some humor too, even if it came at the expense of two of the easier GOP targets. “We’re going to face some ridiculousness especially from our friends in the GOP,” said Clinton. “In fact it’s already begun. Ben Carson says that marriage equality is what caused the fall of the Roman Empire,” she said, making a puzzled emoji face to peals of laughter. On a roll, she went on: “Ted Cruz slammed a political opponent for marching in a Pride parade. He clearly has no idea what he’s missing. Pride parades are such fun. I’ve been marching in them since I was First Lady. You should join us sometime, senator!” As her remarks concluded I turned to one supporter next to me. “So is Hillary Clinton the LGBT candidate of choice?” I asked him. Affirmative. “Even if Biden runs?” Still affirmative. And what, I asked him, is the over-riding reason? His answer was short, and not about LGBTQ rights at all. “Because,” he said, “I think we’d really like to see a woman become president.”

discharges to the “more than 14,000 men and women who were forced out of the military” for being gay. (Later that evening, Joe Biden avowed that the Obama administration was already moving on this.) She will “take on the drug companies,” so that no one has to go bankrupt to pay for the HIV drugs they need to survive and stay healthy. “We’ve got to address the growing crisis of transphobic violence,” she said. “We need to say with one voice that transgender people are valued, they are loved, they are us.” Even though we have come a long way and there is much to celebrate, Clinton shares our concerns about the storm clouds of backlash that are gathering in the GOP camp. If the Republicans claim the White House, “heaven forbid” as she said, then all of the victories are under siege. We could even lose the Supreme Court. That could roll the clock right back to the Middle Ages although there is some justification for wondering whether we aren’t still living there. After all, as Clinton pointed out, “it’s outrageous that in 2015 you can still be fired for being gay, you can still lose your home for being gay, you can even be denied a wedding cake for being gay,” she said. “And this kind of discrimination goes against everything we stand for as a country.” Change is still needed. One way to achieve it, Clinton said, is through legislation. “Congress must pass the federal Equality Act,” she said. “That law would finally outlaw discrimination against LGBT people basically everywhere, in employment, housing, public education, public accommodations, access to federal funding and credit, and in the jury system. It’s a great, noble piece of legislation, and it deserves to become the law of the land. As president I will fight for it

CREEP OF THE WEEK By D’Anne Witowski

b Star Parker

The 2015 Values Voter Summit — an annual event where conservatives gather round to bitch about abortion, big government and gays — has come and gone. Many delusional and hateful things were said about LGBT people. Complaints about God smiting the United States over marriage equality was a popular theme. Hitting all the big themes was Star Parker, the founder of Coalition on Urban Renewal and Education (CURE), which pushes for “free market solutions to poverty.” According to Parker, fighting poverty is “not to be the work of the state, but the work of the church.” “We have 500,000 orphans in our foster system,” Parker said. “Most Godfearing Christians don’t even know we have an orphan system, but those homosexuals know because now that they’re married, that’s where they’re going to get their children, right out of our foster system!” Okay, wait. Star Parker Slow down. What? Is she really saying that the majority of Christians in America have no idea that this country has so many children in the foster system in need of care? How on earth do they not know this? Were those thousands of people Parker was addressing at the Values Voter Summit just learning about this for the first time? According to Parker, homosexuals know all about the foster care system and they’re taking in and adopting children. But Christians (who are never gay, obviously) have no fucking idea? Clearly Parker is trying to scare folks by claiming that homosexuals are snatching kids out of the foster system, as she’s implying that said homes have some kind of nefarious purpose for doing so, which is bullshit.

The truth is that there are plenty of lesbian and gay couples who are, in fact, foster parents or who have adopted kids from the foster system. A great example: April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse, whose legal challenge to Michigan’s anti-gay marriage law made it all the way to the Supreme Court, where they won. The reason they were suing Michigan in the first place was over what was in the best interest of their children. Under Michigan law, they could foster jointly but could not adopt jointly. Wanting their children to have a legal relationship with both parents, they sued. This country’s foster care system is a mess. There are hundreds of thousands of kids and not nearly enough foster families. Kids are bounced from home to home, many until they turn 18 and age out of the system, at which point they’re basically told, “See ya. Good luck.” Spoiler alert: many of these adults have a very hard time making photo: sodaheads.com it once they’re on their own. So forgive me if I find it odd that right-wing Christians know where every Planned Parenthood facility is and have plenty of time to harass women going in for pap smears, but are apparently unaware that there are so many children who have already been born who desperately need help. Even if they are aware, they’re not stepping up to do it. If ever there was evidence that the people at the Values Voter Summit have an incredibly warped sense of values, this is it. Then again, under the rightwing demands for small government, foster kids are just a bunch of takers who, according to Parker, just need some “free market solutions.” Just make sure they aren’t taken in by gay and lesbian couples and they’ll be fine.

NATION GAY STATE REP. BRIAN SIMS RUNNING FOR FED CONGRESS PHILADELPHIA – On Tuesday, Pennsylvania State Rep. Brian Sims announced his candidacy for Pennsylvania’s 2nd Congressional District. Sims, an attorney and civil rights advocate in Center City Philadelphia, has spent his career as a relentless advocate for social, racial, and economic justice. Sims is the first openly gay person elected to the Pennsylvania General Assembly. “I’ve spent my life taking on big challenges in order to do what’s right,” said Sims. “Whether tackling gender and pay equity as a civil rights attorney, or standing up for justice reform in Harrisburg, I’ve never backed down from the big fights. And I never will.” “Brian is a ferocious advocate for the people of this community,” said local activist Andrea Sanders. “When it comes to fighting for the people he represents, there is no one more dedicated or tenacious than Brian. He’ll make a great Congressman.” Congressman Chaka Fattah currently represents the 2nd District. “We need a progressive Congressman who will stand up for opportunity and justice for everyone, not just those at the top,” said Sims. “In Congress, I’ll fight to invest in our kids and our classrooms, create real economic fairness and opportunity, and stand up to the NRA

to get the guns off our streets.” Brian Sims is the son of two retired Army Lieutenant Colonels. Prior to law school he was a standout Division II college football player at Bloomsburg University. After graduation Sims became a distinguished civil rights advocate and attorney at the Philadelphia Bar Association, taking on issues ranging from gender and pay inequity to environmental protection. Elected in 2012 to the State Legislature,

Sims spent his time in Harrisburg working to strengthen and protect public education, preserve critical services for seniors, expand civil rights for all Pennsylvanians, protect funding for Planned Parenthood, and create good local jobs by investing in alternative energy. He’s won numerous awards and recognitions for his work, including being named a “Champion of Choice” by NARAL Pro-Choice America.

Chicago priest removed after ‘Inappropriate Relationship’ CHICAGO (AP) -- The Archdiocese of Chicago says it has removed a Roman Catholic priest because of an “inappropriate relationship with an adult man.” A statement Sunday says the Rev. Marco A. Mercado was removed as rector of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Des Plaines. The brief statement provided no details. It says Archbishop Blase Cupich knows the disclosure “will be difficult to hear” and the archdiocese “is committed to ensuring those serving ... parishioners are fit for ministry.” The Chicago Tribune cites a statement from Mercado saying his priority has always been “the work of the gospel and the struggle for immigrants and the most vulnerable.” He says he prays “this issue is resolved soon” and he apologized if the “scandal has caused any hardship to the faithful.”

County wants God’s mercy after gay marriage ruling MARYVILLE, TN (AP) - An East Tennessee county had planned to consider a resolution last Tuesday asking God for mercy as it is forced to comply with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that effectively legalized gay marriage nationwide. The resolution says Blount County must comply with the ruling by issuing and recognizing marriage licenses for same-sex couples. But the resolution asks state officials including the governor and attorney general to protect “natural marriage” from “lawless” court opinions and defend moral standards. It also appeals directly to God. “We adopt this resolution before God that He pass us by in His Coming Wrath and not destroy our County as He did Sodom and Gomorrah,” the resolution states. The resolution was proposed by Blount County Commissioner Karen Miller, who did not imme-

diately return a call and email from The Associated Press on Tuesday morning. Gwen Schablik is a Blount County resident who is active in the gay-rights organization Tennessee Equality Project. She said residents she has spoken with find the resolution embarrassing. “I’m saddened that this resolution was introduced and definitely shocked that it was introduced in my county,” she said. She was even sadder when officials for the county adjourned the meeting without taking action on the resolution. Wednesday’s sudden adjournment shocked the 150 citizens who packed into the meeting room. Some of the attendees expressed their disbelief by shouting “Cowards!” and “You’ve got to be kidding me!” Miller said she “most likely” would try to reintroduce the measure.

NATION LAW FIRM LABELED HATE GROUP LEADING KIM DAVIS’ CRUSADE LOUISVILLE, KY (AP) - Kim Davis’ lawyer stood onstage in a Washington D.C. hotel and pointed to a photo on the screen. It showed 100,000 people packed into a Peruvian soccer stadium, Mat Staver told the crowd, all there to pray for the Kentucky clerk battling against gay marriage. Staver’s firm, the Liberty Counsel, which revealed Davis’ secret meeting with Pope Francis, has been accused by advocacy groups of peddling misrepresentations in the past. Yet it has become the main source of details about the controversial pope meeting. Online sleuths quickly debunked the Peru story Staver told at the Values Voter Summit, a conference for the conservative Family Research Council. The photo was from a year-old gathering unrelated to Davis, who spent five days in jail for defying a court order and refusing to license gay marriages. Staver could provide no evidence of a massive Davis rally. On Monday, he called it a mistake and blamed miscommunication with the Peruvian authorities who gave him the photo.

The next day, the firm dropped a bombshell. It said Pope Francis, on his celebrated visit to America, secretly met with Davis. The pope hugged her, thanked her for her courage and told her to “stay strong,” Liberty Counsel said. The Vatican on Friday said the pope had a brief meeting with Davis that should not be seen as support for her stance. Many on the religious right hail the Florida-based Liberty Counsel, which bills itself as a non-profit committed to “restoring the culture by advancing religious freedom, the sanctity of human life and the family.” “They’re willing to stand up for our rights under the Constitution, they’re not backing down,” said Nick Williams, a probate judge in Alabama who has also pledged never to issue a marriage licenses to a samesex couple and sought guidance from the Liberty Counsel. Williams compared the federal court system to the tyrannical kings in the Bible: “I’m glad we have a law firm willing to stand up to the kings of our time.” But critics watched in exaspera-

tion as the organization rocketed to national celebrity alongside Davis. The Southern Poverty Law Center lists the Liberty Counsel as an antigay hate groups for spreading false information. “A group that regularly portrays gay people as perverse, diseased pedophiles putting Western civilization at risk are way, way over the line,” said Mark Potok, a senior fellow at the center. The Liberty Counsel has connected homosexuality to higher rates of promiscuity and incest, Potok said, despite scientific evidence to the contrary. The firm opposes laws banning hate crimes and supports discredited conversion therapies that purport to turn homosexuals into heterosexuals. Staver once declared that the Boy Scouts would become a “playground for pedophiles” once it allowed gay troop leaders. Staver, his hair bright white and his ties usually red, contends his quotes were taken out of context and he has legal arguments for the rest: hate crime laws infringe on free

speech, he believes, and gay conversion therapies should be available to those who want them because he believes in “personal autonomy.” “It is irresponsible and reckless to call someone a hate group because you disagree with them,” he said. He added that he can’t be considered a hater because he loves all of God’s creation.

SUPPORTERS, CRITICS OF TRANSGENDER BILLS CLASH AT HEARING BOSTON (AP) - Critics of Massachusetts proposals to extend non-discrimination protections to transgender people in restaurants, schools or any place that accommodates the public said the state should instead focus on the privacy rights of children and women. At a Statehouse hearing Tuesday, Andover Republican state Rep. James Lyons said the bills could allow a 14- or 15-year-old boy to decide he is female and walk into a girl’s locker room. “What about those parents who are concerned?” Lyons said. Supporters of the measures - including Attorney General Maura Healey, U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy and dozens of lawmakers - said transgender individuals are far more likely to be on the receiving end of discrimination. Brandon Adams, a 14-year-old

Framingham resident who testified alongside Kennedy, spoke to the Judiciary Committee about the challenges of transitioning from a girl to a boy. “I asked to use the boy’s bathroom because that’s where I felt safe,” Brandon said. When school officials refused, Brandon drank less water - ultimately feeling dizzy and dehydrated - to avoid using the bathroom while at school. The bills would expand a 2011 law that already banned discrimination against transgender people in the workplace and in housing by also banning discrimination in other public accommodations. Healey said her office has received seven complaints this year from transgender individuals facing discrimination in public places. She said that while it’s illegal under state

law for a restaurant to discriminate against a transgender individual when hiring, it’s not illegal for restaurants to refuse service to transgender people. “Discomfort is not a reason to perpetuate discrimination,” she said. Opponents said the bill would endanger the privacy and safety of women and children in public bathrooms, locker rooms and dressing rooms, and allow sexual predators to claim confusion about their gender in order to gain access to private areas. “The legislature must understand that we are dealing with two conflicting rights here - the right of a grown man to fully ‘express himself’ as female versus the right to privacy of my young daughter and millions like her,” Massachusetts Family Institute President Andrew Beckwith said.

Healey said the law doesn’t mean that men can dress up like women to walk into a woman’s room. She said she wasn’t aware of any such cases. She also said that illegal activity would still remain illegal under the law. Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley and Police Commissioner William Evans also testified in favor of the bill. Gov. Charlie Baker said Monday that he doesn’t want anybody discriminated against and supports the 2011 law but has concerns about moving away from the current law. “We should never discriminate against anybody, and people should be protected. That’s absolutely my view,” Baker said, adding that when it comes to specific legislation “the devil’s always in the details with respect to this sort of thing.

SUNSHINE STATE Owners race to save Parliament House from auction gavel ORLANDO—According to court documents, Parliament House, Orlando’s longest-running gay club, will be sold at a foreclosure auction the morning of Nov. 2, unless a last minute loan is approved in the weeks ahead. The venerable institution on North Orange Blossom Trail has been on shaky financial ground, despite having successful emerged from bankruptcy this year in February. According to Orlando bankruptcy attorney R. Scott Shuker, who represents Parliament Partners Inc., the corporation is in the process of getting an additional $3.5 million in financing as part of an overall debt restructure being negotiated. Sources tell the Agenda that this loan is likely to be approved this coming Friday, October 9, giving the resort’s longtime owners Don Grantastein,

president of Parliament Partners Inc.; Gerald Cadesky; and the Gardens LLC., some needed breathing room to repay debts surmounting $13 million. Should that loan not materialize, the property will be sold to the highest bidder on November 2. The once-neglected gay resort, originally built in the 60s, has recently gotten a face lift, although much work still is needed on the property. Its red-lettered sign on the Trail just west of downtown Orlando, has stood the test of time, announcing fund-raisers and concerts and other community events for four decades. According to the Orlando Sentinel, the resort’s recent financial woes began with its failure to repay $6.9 million in principal and more than $4 million in interest to a group

headed by investor Kenneth J. Johnson of Torrance, Calif., according to the judicial ruling filed last week. In addition, the club and its nearby timeshares owe the taxpayers of Orange County about $1.9 million in property taxes going back to 2006, according to the county tax collector. Despite past financial struggles,

Shuker said he was “very confident” another loan would be approved prior to the November deadline. He was unable to say what group was considering making the loan. About half of the 10-acre site is usable and includes the club, a pool and a 1960s hotel with 111 units. The property is valued at $4.3 million on the tax rolls.

INTERNATIONAL DONALD TRUMP: WORLDWIDE EMBARRASSMENT HIS IS CLEARLY A RECOGNIZED NAME WORLDWIDE, WHICH IS NOT TO SAY IT’S A BELOVED ONE. GREGORY KATZ & PAUL KELBIE Associated Press Photo: pagesix.com)

October 08, 2015

R

epublican presidential front-runner Donald Trump is well-known in this serene coastal section of Scotland, where shimmering golden sand dunes meet the iceblue North Sea and people play on his golf course. He’s known in the Himalayas, too, far from any sign with his name on it. And in the Middle East, Africa and beyond. His is clearly a recognized name worldwide, which is not to say it’s a beloved one. In Balmedie, the real estate mogul is both praised and blamed for building a deluxe international golf course in a previously pristine spot. Some believe he’s delivered the jobs and benefits he promised; others think American voters should beware a fast-talking scoundrel. “He is a strange fish,” said Susan Munro, a shop worker who has lived on land adjacent to the new Trump resort for more than 35 years. “If he doesn’t get his own way, he just loses it.” As she sees it, “He would be a disaster for everyone.” In diverse parts of the world, many see the ascendant Trump candidacy with a mixture of bemusement, astonishment and alarm. It’s striking how many people know of him at all. In the Himalayan hill town of

Dharamsala, Tibetan Buddhist monk Tenzin Damchoe, 39, said Trump is “making a lot of noise to be noticed.” Trump “must remember that the U.S. does not belong to white people, they themselves were once immigrants,” he said. In the northern India city of Lucknow, Sharmila Krishna, 40, praised Trump for bringing life and color to an otherwise dim campaign. “Political experience is not mandatory to run a country,” she said. “Barack Obama has not done anything great.” Many opinion-leaders and ordinary people are, though, concerned about a political novice as U.S. president. It is the bluster and the “make America great again” talk that has shaped this view. Also, his swagger from “The Apprentice” TV show, the easy-to-caricature hairstyle and his inflammatory comments, spread worldwide, about immigrants. Meantime he’s done little to reach out to the rest of the world. In South Africa, for example, Trump angered many with a series of harsh tweets, including one during Nelson Mandela’s 2013 funeral service in which he called the country “a crime ridden mess that is just waiting to explode.” J. Brooks Spector, a retired U.S. diplomat who writes a column on

American politics for The Daily Maverick, a South African news and opinion site, said Trump confirms the stereotypical view of Americans as loud, boisterous and arrogant. Pearl Pillay, a policy researcher who spent time in the United States as part of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, said U.S. diplomacy would “crash and burn” if he takes power. Trump’s self-presentation as a political renegade is, however, getting a sympathetic hearing from some people. And he seems to have support among Russia’s emerging financial elite, many of whom are billionaires themselves. Russian tycoon Aras Agalarov told the Russian press he was impressed with Trump when he met him in Moscow two years ago during the Miss Universe beauty pageant. “He said a lot of good things about our country, our culture, our people,” Agalarov said. In India, many younger people in the high-tech center of Bangalore take a dim view of Trump’s candidacy, in part because he is perceived by some as racist. “Any attempt to ‘Make America Great’ will require somebody with an agenda that will include people of all ethnicities and religious

backgrounds,” said Shreya Shetty, a 29-year-old engineer. Namratha Srirangapatna, a 33-year-old interior designer, said Trump is a “lightweight who believes his money can get him the presidency. God help America.” It is Mexico that has borne the brunt of Trump’s rhetoric. He has characterized Mexican immigrants crossing into the U.S. illegally as “rapists” and “criminals,” and pledged to build a “beautiful” wall on the Mexican border to keep them out. Some Mexicans have reacted with anger, others shrug him off. “Don’t take him so seriously, for God’s sake, we’re Mexicans, we make fun of death,” said Jorge Suarez, whose company has released a new video game in which players can throw soccer balls, cactus leaves and tequila bottles at a cartoon image of Trump. Mexico’s ambassador to the United States, Miguel Basanez, told Mexicans that Trump is simply playing politics during the primary campaign. “He knows very well that what he is saying is false,” the ambassador said. “He knows very well he will apologize to Mexicans.” That would be one side of Trump that few if any have seen one who says “sorry.”

YOUR LIFE: AN OWNER’S MANUAL

Who am I? The words people speak over you shape your life. Perhaps you have a parent, teacher, or friend who has encouraged you and those words have molded you into the individual you are today.

his also works in the reciprocal. People can speak words of discouragement, put negative labels on you, or hinder you from reaching your full potential. What you internalize into your life becomes your identity. If you were to strip away your external identity, your relationship status, work title, socio-economic By status, etc., what James would be left? Miller What descriptors would you use to define who you are? If an outsider were to hear your internal dialogue what would they hear? Would you speak words of affirmation or words of defeat and self-loathing? During those times when you make mistakes, or are

embarrassed about something you’ve done, do you tell yourself you are dumb, stupid or berate yourself? The word choices you use during these times are your actual core self-beliefs. There is nothing wrong with struggling with your identity, but if you continue to use these negative labels then you will never rise above your current level of development. The goal is to change your core belief by catching yourself when you use these words of self-defeat. Acknowledge the perceived failure but immediately follow it up with what you learned and how you will be more cautious in the future. Remember, you would show mercy and speak words of compassion if someone else were to make these same mistakes. Why wouldn’t you speak those same words to yourself? Affirmation is one of the best selfhelp tools you can practice. Make a

list of positive attributes you possess that you can verbalize each morning. This list can affirm personality attributes, physical characteristics, or behaviors that you are proud of. It can also be a list of reassurances in areas upon which you will (future tense) improve. If you struggle with developing a list, then write down what positive things others have said about you. Once you have completed this list, it is vital for you to read it aloud. As you read each one, take a moment to look in the mirror and say the affirmation to yourself. You may be surprised at how difficult it is, or how you may blush as you give yourself a compliment. Remember, your mind will often tell you this is silly, or what you are saying is not true. This is when you have to choose to believe that what you are saying is true even if it doesn’t seem like it at the moment. When you practice this on a daily

basis, your core belief start to change and those negative self-labels morph into something beautiful. Negative events in your life are not who you are, they are simply something you went through. You have developed and blossomed into an amazing person who is embraced by many friends and family. It’s time for you to acknowledge this person and use your internal dialogue to speak life and encouragement. No one can love you as well as yourself. FAST FIT

3

A good general rule of thumb has us eating at 7am, 10am, 1pm, 4pm, 7pm and 10pm— but the precise time is not as important as the space between meals. Eat half of your current portion size, but twice as often consuming it at a slower pace, and you will lose weight.

2

Walk one mile a day and you will be taking about 2,000 steps in the process. This is no small achievement, particularly when you consider that the average sedentary adult is likely to take only 2,500 steps during the course of an entire day.

LGBTQ HISTORY MONTH TRANSGENDER FORWARD As the gay and lesbian community celebrates marriage equality across the United States, the transgender members of the LGBTQ community continue to work diligently to place their civil rights front and center, as we move into the next chapter of LGBTQ equality. To many, it seems as if the transgender movement has come from nowhere in the last decade, but the reality is that transgender Americans have been fighting for civil rights right along with the lesbian, gay and bisexual members of our community for decades. Here are a few key high- lights of transgender people within the tableau of American LGBTQ civil-rights history:

1800 - 2000 1800: “WOMAN CHIEF” BARCHEEAMPE A leader of the Crow nation, the “woman chief” was known for her war exploits and had several wives.

1871: WE’WHA #1 Two-spirit Zuni Native American who was born male but lived as a woman. An ac-complished weaver and potter, in 1886 the six-foot Zuni maiden met President Cleveland, who was unaware that she was two-spirit. 1952: CHRISTINE JORGENSEN #2 A trailblazer who was the first person in America to receive sexualreassignment surgery, Jorgensen, a former GI, became a household name and put the issue of gender identity in the American conscience.

1965: DEWEY’S COFFEE SHOP PROTEST One hundred and fifty “non-conforming” people protested Dewey’s Coffee Shop in Philadelphia because it refused service to young people who were dressing in clothing that did not conform to their gender. The protest led to an end of the discriminatory policy.

1966: “TRANSSEXUAL PHENOMENON” PUBLISHED Dr. Harry Benjamin published a seminal work that described the medical transition for transgender people. Benjamin helped Jorgensen in her transition and acknowledged her in the preface of the book: “Without Christine Jorgensen and the unsought publicity of her ‘conversion,’ this book could hardly have been conceived.” 1969: STONEWALL RIOTS #3 The legendary seminal event of the LGBT civil-rights movement included members of the transgender community. The LGBT community resisted police abuse on the night after Judy Garland’s funeral, which many attribute for the frayed nerves. 1970: STREET TRANSVESTITE ACTION REVOLUTIONARIES (STAR) Started by transgender legends Sylvia Rivera and Marsha Johnson, STAR was an advocacy group for transgender people. Both Rivera and Johnson were rioters at the Stonewall Inn and helped usher in the tepid acknowledgment of transgender Americans as part of the gay civil-rights movement. 1975: MINNEAPOLIS PASSES TRANSGENDER LEGISLATION Minneapolis becomes the first city

1 to pass an anti-discrimination law protecting transgender people. That’s right, Minneapolis, in 1975. 1977: RENÉE RICHARDS The next transgender icon who pierced the American consciousness. Richards was an eye doctor who became a professional tennis player and challenged a ban that prevented her from playing in the U.S. Open as a woman. The New York Supreme Court overruled the ban, making Richards the catalyst for a landmark decision concerning transgender rights. 1986: FTM NEWSLETTER Lou Sullivan published the FTM newsletter, which was later transformed by Jamison Green into FTM International, the world’s largest information and networking group for female-to- ale transgender people and transsexual men. Sullivan is credited with bringing female-tomale transgenderism to the forefront. 1991: RIFT WITH MICHIGAN WOMYN’S MUSIC FESTIVAL Nancy Burkholder was removed from the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival when she was discovered to be transgender. The removal led to an annual protest by the transgender community, which continued through this year, when the festival ceased.

The story of his journey and death was later chronicled in the Oscar -inning film “Boys Don’t Cry.” 1995: GENDERPAC FORMED Transgender activist RiKi Wilchins formed the first advocacy group dedicated to gender identity and expression. The organization ushered in the period where the national transgender movement took hold. 1999: FIRST TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE The first Transgender Day of Remembrance honored those who have died due to anti-transgender violence. The commemoration was a direct result of the murder of Rita Hester in Massachusetts. TRANSGENDER PRIDE FLAG CREATED Monica Helms created the transgender flag, saying, “The stripes at the top and bottom are light blue, the traditional color for baby boys. The stripes next to them are pink, the traditional color for baby girls. The stripe in the middle is white, for those who are intersex, transitioning or consider themselves having a neutral or undefined gender. The pattern is such that no matter which way you fly it, it is always correct, in our lives.”

Fourth Man Out is turning out to be a popular title at LGBT film fests. It helps that the lead cast includes hot guys such as out actor Evan Todd as Adam, Parker Young as Chris, and Chord Overstreet (less hot under a beard) as Nick. The script has plenty of funny and touching scenes, although it’s a little hard to believe the people living in the Albany region of upstate New York would have difficulty dealing with a gay friend or neighbor. At 24, car mechanic Adam (Todd) has yet to come out to his best friends Chris (Young), Nick (Overstreet) and Ortu (Jon Gabrus, who plays the character as an unfortunate amalgam of Jack Black and Josh Gad). Nevertheless, Adam has decided it’s time to come out. Needless to say, it doesn’t go well. Somehow the guys find it within themselves to rise to the occasion, with Chris taking the lead. After all, he and Adam have been friends since childhood. When the unexpected conflict of a perceived attraction between Adam and Chris arises (and who could blame Adam?), Fourth Man Out takes a dramatic turn. But you know right from the start that a happily-ever-after ending is in the offing (or should that be outing?).

There’s a lot of stuff in writer/director Suzanne Guacci’s Stuff (Aspire). Married lesbian moms Deb (Yvonne Jung) and Trish (Karen Sillas) are going through a rough patch in their relationship. Stay-at-home mom Deb takes care of the house and daughters Sam (Brianna Scudiero) and Suzie (Maya Guacci). Dentist mom Trish is the breadwinner. Both women are stressed out by their responsibilities, but that’s the least of their stuff. Five years after her beloved father’s passing, Trish still hasn’t properly dealt with her grief. Even worse, her cold and stubborn mother Ginger (Phyllis Somerville) is holding Trish back by simply refusing to have a headstone placed on the grave. Meanwhile, Deb strikes up a friendship with Jamie (Traci Dinwiddie), the tattooed apprentice tattoo artist mom of Joey (Vincent P. Colon), an autistic boy in Sam’s pre-school class, which stirs all sorts of stuff within her. Of course, there’s stuff with the kids, including Suzie’s determination to get a part in the school play. Not quite stuffed to the gills, Stuff does want you to keep track of a lot of stuff, but it does so without belaboring the point.

A bit of a strange selection as LGBT film festivals go, Coming In (WB/Summerstorm) is a German language rom-com about a gay hairdresser and trendsetter who discovers that he is in love with a woman. Directed and co-written by gay filmmaker Marco Kreutzpaintner, Coming In is as romantic as it is comedic. Tom (Kostja Ullmann) has the most successful men’s hair salon in Berlin. His gorgeous boyfriend Robert (Ken Duken) helps him run his business and keeps it a profit making entity. Tom is also highly respected in the gay community, not just for his business success but for his philanthropic work for gay youth, as well. In an effort to make things right, Tom secretly helps Heidi out at her shop. Of course, that only confounds the situation. After spending a lot of time together, an attraction develops into something more than just a phase. Funny and sexy, is a rom-com that has earned the designation.

Docs about porn stars (That Man: Peter Berlin and Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon) and porn filmmakers (I Always Said Yes: The Many Lives of Wakefield Poole) are all the rage. order porn industry. Holmes found good gay filmmakers, as well as better models and locations, allowing the genre to evolve from badly produced loops to full-length features, while celebrating the new gay freedoms of a post-Stonewall world at the same time. Writer/director Michael Stabile’s feature-length doc debut is a respectful and respectable portrait of Holmes. Stabile’s interview subjects, including porn legend Jeff Stryker, Jake Shears, Chi Chi LaRue, John Waters, Steve Scarborough (Falcon VP from 198693), actors Tom Chase, Jim Bentley and Steve Cruz, John Rutherford (Falcon VP from 1993-2002) and many others go a long way in illuminating the story of Holmes and Falcon.

The extremely intimate Like You Mean It (Breaking Glass) starring, written and directed by Philipp Karner is an emotional journey through the end of a gay relationship. Struggling actor Mark (Karner) and musician Jonah (Denver Milord) have dinner with straight and engaged couple Nicole (Gillian Shure) and Craig (Adrian Quinonez) during which the soon-to-be-wed duo announces that they are taking a brief hiatus from each other in advance of their big day. This news seems to trigger something in Mark who is already struggling with a number of issues. His acting career has stalled. His sister in Austria keeps leaving him voice mail messages that he chooses to ignore. He goes off of his anti-depressants. Last, but not least, he feels himself growing apart from Jonah. This is not an easy movie to watch and it is heartbreaking almost right from the start. Nevertheless, Kanner’s well-written screenplay and his performance, combined with that of Milord’s, make Like You Mean It mean something.

Those People (Little Big Horn), the feature film debut by out director and co-screenwriter Joey Kuhn, feels like one of those LGBT film festival flicks that could easily have crossover appeal. Spanning a three-month period, from September through December, the people in Those People include Charlie (Jonathan Gordon), a gay MFA student in painting with “Jewish stomach” issues, and his childhood best friend Sebastian (Jason Ralph), a spoiled gay Upper East Side rich kid. There is also Ursula (Britt Lower), straight bartender Wyatt (Chris Conroy) and London (Meghann Fahey). A night out at a piano bar for Charlie’s birthday results in a flirtation between Charlie and experienced piano man Tim (Haaz Sleiman). A street confrontation with paparazzi also hastens Sebastian’s downward spiral. Caught between his unrequited love for Sebastian and the promise of a new and romance with Tim, Charlie is forced to make difficult decisions about himself. Those People has a lot going for it, including strong performances from lead actors Gordon, Ralph and Sleiman and a solid supporting cast. Kuhn also proves his mettle as a writer and director, one who shows great promise.

In what could be a setup to a joke, a gay couple, a lesbian couple and a straight couple go to Fire Island for a weekend in late September in That’s Not Us. Jackie’s (Nicole Pursell) aunt Linda has offered her and her girlfriend Alex (Sarah Wharton) use of her house. They are joined by Alex’s BFF James (Mark Berger) and James’ boyfriend Spencer (David Rysdahl), as well as Alex’s sister Liz (Elizabeth Gray) and her boyfriend Dougie (Tommy Nelms). In what is something of a familiar device, all six characters will learn something new about themselves and each other over the course of the weekend. For example, Spencer has been accepted to grad school in Chicago, which means that he will have to leave New York and James in order to attend. In the case of Jackie and Alex, the dreaded lesbian bed death has set in. Interestingly, Dougie’s secret – he can’t ride a bike! – is the least traumatizing. Add in Spencer’s persistent mother a neighbor with a lost dog, and a case of mistaken house identity, and you have plenty of opportunities for conflict and comedy. That’s Not Us is a sweet, if forgettable, movie.

The winner receives a luxury stay at Crane’s Beach house. 7:00 p.m. The Palm Beaches Theatre. 262 S. Ocean Blvd. Lake Worth. 33462.
