Violent Predator Assaults Sight-Impaired Gay Man By CLIFF DUNN

Part 1 of a 2-part Series WILTON MANORS - A parttime resident of Wilton Manors, Robert Jacobs, alleges that early one Saturday morning last month, he was held against his will in his own apartment for over an hour by another man who took advantage of Jacobs’s visual impairment. Jacobs— known by some locals as the “blind snowbird”—spends most of the year living in the Greater Boston area and usually spends the winter months in Wilton Manors. Jacobs says that he was unable to get a taxi during the early morning hours of March 17 after visiting

a friend’s house the night before, and so was walking home on NE 4 Ave. in the Fort Lauderdale city limits, just south of where the street approaches Fort Lauderdale High School and then turns into Wilton Drive. “That’s when the ‘Hopper’ pulled up,” say Jacobs, referring to the notfor-profit community shuttle service that provides free transportation to locations in and around Wilton Manors. Jacobs himself didn’t “hail” the vehicle to pick him up. He says that was the action of the man who he claims accosted him just a short time later. CAMP PENDLETON, CA – History was made last week when a former U.S. Navy medical corpsman proposed to his U.S. Marine boyfriend at Southern California’s Camp Pendleton, home of the 1 Marine Expeditionary Force and other important military commands. As Marine Lance Corporal Avarice Guerrero returned from a 10-month deployment in Afghanistan on April 24, boyfriend Cory Huston—a San Diego resident who was discharged

under the Pentagon’s now-defunct Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT) policy—popped the question in what is believed to be the first gay marriage proposal on a U.S. military base. As Huston told San Diego LGBT Weekly, “This is a huge step for me,” acknowledging that the eyes of history—as well as thousands of LGBT servicemen and –women— were upon him and Guerrero (a name which, in Spanish, translates as

WILTON MANORS – For a city with a population of less than 12,000 (Source: 2010 U.S. Census data), Wilton Manors has big city parking woes. “Believe it or not,” offers Heidi Shafran, the city’s Director of Community Development, “this isn’t actually a bad thing”—what some might refer to as a “high-class problem.” She is referring to the growth of the Island City’s business in the past nine months, which (as any traffic engineer will attest) brings with it an increase in the vehicular population, along with the need for more parking. To meet this need—demand, really—about three months ago the city commission approved a $1.1 million bank loan to address “parking solutions.” These include, says Shafran, “a long-term lease with Kids in Distress for three lots located on NE 8 Terr.” These lots, which are within walking distance of Five Points as well as shopping and dining on Wilton Drive, should accommodate approximately 40 parking spaces—much needed as more businesses open along the Island City’s main thoroughfare. Shafran acknowledges that there are concerns about the growth of business on the Drive, but offers that solutions are part of the “ongoing process and action plan” that she and other officials—elected and hired— are employing to assure that growth

Agenda, Guy Magazine Host Kick Off Networking Luncheon WILTON MANORS - Nearly one hundred business and community leaders attended the first Multimedia Platforms (MMP) Networking Luncheon on Wednesday, April 25 at Gables Wilton Park on Wilton Drive. Co-hosted by Wilton Manors Main Street, Inc., the event was catered by Stork’s Bakery and Coffee House in Wilton Manors. Krishan Manners, President and CEO of Wilton Manors Main Street, said that the turnout didn’t disappoint. “It is always good to see so many individuals who have a stake in the good and welfare of this community coming together to network, catch up with one another, and help each other’s businesses through best practices and mutual support,” said Manners. Rev. Jamie Grace of WIG Ministries said, “I felt so uplifted and inspired. I didn’t realize that Bobby Blair [the publisher of Florida Agenda and Guy Magazine] was such a motivational speaker.” Marvin Nathan, world-class drag performer and emcee, attended. “I thought that the food by Stork’s was delicious,” he

said, adding “I am looking forward to next month’s event at Matty’s on the Drive.” Blair, who in addition to publishing Agenda and GUY is CEO and Managing Partner of MMP, announced that the Gay Tea Cruise—originated by the late Peter Burke, who died earlier this year— will return on June 3 with entertainers Deja Devonier from Lips Cabaret, and the talents of Marvin Nathan, whose television credits include CBS’ hit series “The Nanny” and “The Maury Povich Show.” A July 4 cruise will feature the Greater Fort Lauderdale fireworks display as well as a performance by Nathan, who will mark 37 years in show business. Blair also announced the return of “Dancing with the South Florida Stars” to the Manor Restaurant and Complex on Monday, May 21. For its second entry—the first having packed the stands to the rafters—an all-star panel of judges has been assembled, including Pepper Mashay (famous for—among other things—the “Dive in the Pool” theme song from Showtime’s “Queer as Folk”), Misty Eyez and Marvin Nathan, as well as DJ Scott Mann and the “Dreamgirls” dance ensemble of Nicole Phillips, Deja Devonier, and Velvet Lenore. Like the inaugural event in December, DWTSFS: Season Two will benefit the Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation which is working to provide free gym memberships and nutrition and lifestyle programs to persons living with HIV/AIDS. Tickets are on sale now at GuyMag.net and briannealfitness.org: general admission is $10, and VIP seating is $40.

at a fundraiser next month with the goal to raise contributions for the establishment of a safe house for homeless LGBT youth. Davis, whose son Rashad came out to her when he was 15 years old, says that homeless gay youths comprise “a large percentage of our homeless population, but due to the intensity of its nature, they are not reported as” being gay. The author also plans to establish a not-for-profit foundation, named after her book, with a “mission to get these beautiful young adults off the streets and into a safe house.” Although Davis’s relationship with her son was stronger for his having come out to her, she notes that other gay teens “are not that blessed, and that is why we must step in and help our beautiful homeless gay community youth and young adults.” To this end, Davis will host a fundraiser on Saturday, May 19 at PJ’S Corner Pocket (924 N. Flagler Drive, Fort Lauderdale), starting at 7:00 p.m. Davis says that the evening will include dancing, karaoke, fun, food, a private auction, and a raffle. A minimum donation of $5 is requested. Americans Increasingly Favor Marriage Equality WASHINGTON, DC – A new survey from the Pew Research Center finds that an increasing number of Americans favor of gay marriage. At the same time, a greater number favor gun ownership rights over gun control. The poll’s authors note that both positions represent landmark shifts in public attitudes, reflecting a “small-l” libertarianism taking shape in the culture. The survey—conducted by telephone between April 4 and 15, and reflecting the opinions of more than 3,000 nationwide respondents, with a margin of error plus or minus three percent—found that 47 percent of Americans favor marriage equality, and 49 percent believe it’s more important to protect the rights of gun owners than to support gun control laws. While not a majority in either case, those who support these positions outnumber their opponents, with 43 percent against same-sex marriage and 45 percent supporting gun control over gun ownership. According to Pew, strong opposition to gay marriage—which peaked in December 2004 at 38 percent— generally fluctuated around 30 percent until 2010, when it began to decrease, finally reaching its present 22 percent. Contrarily, strong support—with an all-time modern low of 8 percent, also in 2004—has ticked upwards until it now equals its opposition with 22 percent.

Gay Mom’s Dismissal from Cub Scouts Drives National Tolerance Campaign BRIDGEPORT, OH - A gay woman who was terminated from her position as a den mother for her son’s Cub Scout troop because of her sexual identity says she will not take the offense lying down. Jennifer Tyrell of Bridgeport, Ohio, has launched a petition to overturn the Boy Scouts of America’s (BSA) long-standing policy that bans open or avowed homosexuals from leadership positions in any of its organizations, which include the Boy Scouts, the Cub Scouts, and its Venturing division

NATIONAL NEWS

(formerly the Explorers). BSA also operates several permanent locations around the country, including the Florida National High Adventure Sea Base in Islamorada in the Keys. O date, the online campaign to change Scouting’s policies has garnered over 170,000 signatures. Tyrrell, 32, was told on April 10 about the decision by Scouting. She told MSNBC this week that the loss she and her seven year old son feel is “devastating.” “We lost our scouting family,” said Tyrell, a stay at home mother of four. “The best time in our lives we’ve had in the last year, it’s gone,” she added. “I can’t stop crying.” Tyrrell, a 32-year-old stay at home mother of four, became a den mother last year when her son, Cruz Burns, signed up for Cub Scouts. Although she was aware of the Boy Scouts’ national policy against homosexual leaders, she said she was told by a local Scout Master that there would be no controversy if she signed up as a leader. “He said they would stand, you know, hand in hand with us and stand behind us all the way. Well, actually, that’s been true,” she said. “I’ve never had a problem.” In an email to MSNBC, Boy Scouts spokesman Deron Smith said Tyrrell was in violation of Scouting’s national policy regarding gays. That policy gained national attention in the June 2000 Supreme Court ruling in Boy Scouts of America v. Dale, in which the justices ruled that Scouting, and all other private organizations, have a constitutionallyguaranteed right to freedom of association and discriminating in its membership standards, under the First Amendment. The case involved an assistant scoutmaster who had been likewise banned because of his sexual identity. “Scouting, and the majority of parents it serves, does not believe it is the right forum for children to become aware of the issue of sexual orientation, or engage in discussions about being gay,” said Smith, the BSA spokesman. “Rather, such complex matters should be discussed with parents, caregivers, or spiritual advisers, at the appropriate time and in the right setting.” He added “We fully understand and appreciate that not everyone will agree with any one position or policy.” For Tyrrell, Scouting’s decision

comes down to basic human fairness. “We’re just people,” she said. “We’re just gay people who love their kids.”

Pennsylvania Elects First Openly Gay Lawmaker HARRISBURG, PA – Last week, an openly gay candidate won a decisive Democratic primary in Philadelphia, and will now become Pennsylvania’s first openly gay member of the state’s House of Representatives. Brian Sims beat a longtime incumbent to win the Democratic nomination in a heavily Democratic legislative district. Since he faces no Republican opponent in November, he will take his seat next January. “Tonight we’re celebrating a historic victory for Pennsylvania and for Brian,” said Chuck Wolfe, president and CEO of the Victory Fund. “LGBT Pennsylvanians will finally have a voice in their state legislature, and what a strong and unyielding voice it will be. We are thrilled for Brian, who ran a remarkable campaign.” Sims, an attorney and LGBT rights activist from Philadelphia, formerly sat on the Victory Campaign Board, and served as a Staff Counsel for the Philadelphia Bar Association, as well as President of the Board of Directors of Equality Pennsylvania.

Town Councilman Threatened after Same-Sex Marriage Resolution JAMESTOWN, NY – The comments of a Jamestown councilman suggesting that the community consider marketing itself as a Mecca for gay marriage has sparked a firestorm, with the official receiving calls for his resignation and even threats against his life. Councilman Greg Rabb, who also serves as the municipal body’s president, proposed during a recent meeting that the state’s marriage equality law could benefit the community by putting out the call for gay tourists and those looking to tie the knot. When council members reviewed ideas for building tourism dollars within the community of 31,000

(Source: 2010 Census data), Rabb floated the suggestion that Jamestown “market itself as a same sex destination.” Following the remarks, a flood of emails and comments hit the Web site of the Post Journal, the local newspaper. “I was appalled when I read Greg Rabb’s idea to make Chautauqua County a destination for ‘same sex marriages,’” wrote one reader. “What a despicable thing to say! This is an abomination and is against all natural law. The morals of our country are at an all time low and it is time we turn ourselves around.” Another reader, Pastor Donald V. Erickson, wrote with outrage “What! Is this how we are going to put Jamestown on the map? A baby San Francisco? We’ve already been in the national limelight (recall one who went about Jamestown knowingly infecting girls with the HIV virus),” adding “News flash, fellas: The second half of Romans, chapter one, is just as true as every other page in God’s Holy Word (The Bible).” Another criticized Rabb for pushing a “personal agenda.” Supporters of Rabb organized a demonstration on front of the Post Journal editorial offices this week, to show their solidarity with the embattled councilman. They said that the councilman had received threats since his suggestion, and note that town officials have seen an increase in tourism since the passage of marriage equality in New York, since Jamestown is near the border with Pennsylvania, a state where gay marriage is still not legal. ‘ATTACK’ continued from Page 1

investigation, Jacobs was unwilling to give the name of his assailant; for the purposes of this article, he will be referred to as “Jim.”) Jacobs says that he recognized Jim’s voice from several previous occasions in which the man had greeted him on the streets. Jacobs explains “As far as I knew, he was a street guy. I was always polite with him when he said ‘hi,’ but never overly friendly.” Jacobs says that his blindness makes him naturally dependant on many things the ‘sighted’ take for granted, and that although he is careful about with whom he associates, “I can’t live my life suspicious of other people,” he offers. Jacobs relates that after he got into the Hopper—an electric vehicle similar in design to stretch golf cart— it continued up Wilton Drive before stopping at the corner of NE 21 Court, in front of the Gables Wilton Park condominium apartments. Jacobs says he got off the Hopper and prepared to cross the Drive when Jim told him that he was willing to walk Jacobs across the street to his apartment, but first needed to stop for about five minutes at a unit in the Gables Wilton Park complex. “I need to swing by a friend’s house,” Jacobs says that Jim informed him. “It didn’t seem like a big deal.” For those who are visually-impaired, Jacobs relates, the street corners on Wilton Drive are not very “userfriendly.” “There are no safe crossings,” he explains, “with just a single audible signal light [which emits a beeping sound to alert a light change] at NE 6 Ave.” This may have contributed to Jacobs’ willingness to wait a few minutes for Jim to help him across the Drive. “I felt a bit in his debt,” Jacobs admits, since the man had been responsible for getting the shuttle to stop and pick him up. “I knew him casually from my walking around town, and I didn’t have any reason to fear him.” Jim “brought me up to the unit,” says Jacobs, one of the upper story apartments in Gables Wilton Park that faces the Drive. When they got upstairs, he relates, “Jim told the guy who lived there to ‘get this guy’— meaning me—a drink of water.” Although he was willing to wait on Jim for a few minutes in the strange

apartment, Jacobs had a sense right away that things were “odd” in the relationship between Jim and the other man whose apartment they had entered. The dynamic between the two men, Jacobs says, was agitated, with Jim making demands and giving orders, and he knew that Jim didn’t live there. After a few minutes, “Jim went out to the balcony,” says Jacobs, “and I asked the guy [who lived there] ‘what’s the story here? Is he [ Jim] your master?’ ‘Yeah, sort of,’ the guy told me, and I just wanted to get out of there.” A short time later, Jacobs relates, Jim came inside the apartment from the balcony and then pulled Jacobs outside with him. Jacobs says the man asked him if he wanted to smoke some marijuana. Jacobs eschewed the offer, and he says that Jim continued to smoke something on the balcony. “I knew it wasn’t pot because I have smelled that before, and this was something entirely different.” Although he was in unfamiliar surroundings, Jacobs says that at this point he started to “get bolder and more assertive,” insisting that Jim take him back downstairs to the sidewalk on the street corner. Jim delayed their departure until Jacobs’s demands to leave became more insistent. After a time, they went downstairs. Although Jacobs told Jim to leave him on the corner, he says that Jim insisted upon walking him across Wilton Drive. They walked across the Drive, and Jacobs says that Jim physically steered him behind the strip center located on the 2100 block of Wilton Drive, between Copy This and the Florida Agenda editorial offices. He claims that Jim pulled him into a breezeway (“I can’t describe it very well because I haven’t seen it,” he acknowledges). “I started to plead with him to take me to the front of my apartment building.” Claiming that he was roughly handled by Jim through the hallways of his apartment complex during the still-dark pre-dawn hours, Jacobs was stunned and horrified when—after being finally escorted to his own unit by Jim—the man pushed him through the door of his apartment and pulled closed the door behind him, locking both men in. “I didn’t want to show too

much fear,” Jacobs admits. Once inside, Jacobs says that Jim started demanding money from him. “He said that we had been smoking dope at his friend’s place and that he wanted to be paid for what I had supposedly smoked,” relates Jacobs. “I told him that I hadn’t smoked anything and that he needed to leave my apartment.” Jacobs explains that he tried to maintain a level voice and keep things calm and reasonable as he attempted to convince Jim to leave. “I told him that I would call the police if he didn’t leave.” While he listened to Jim wander around his apartment, opening drawers, doors, and cabinets, Jacobs tried to call for assistance on his smartphone. “I didn’t think a blind man could use an iPhone,” he admits, attempting humor in the face of the decidedly unfunny. “I couldn’t make a speed dial to the police. Then he pulled the phone out of my hand and flung it across the room,” Jacobs recounts. “He was pushing up against me, demanding money, which I told him I didn’t have. I tried to approach him—to try and steer him towards the door—but he shoved me back each time.” Jacobs says that Jim shoved him back so hard that Jacobs fell back onto the floor of his apartment. He also pushed Jacobs into the counter, which injured his ribcage. That assault became an opportunity. “He left when he thought that he had really hurt me,” Jacobs offers. “He may have thought that he had made so much noise, it could have awakened my neighbors.” Next week: The aftermath of Jacobs’ perilous home invasion ordeal. 13 Charged in Florida A&M Hazing Death: More Charges to Come in Other FAMU Hazing Incidents, Prosecutors Say

ORLANDO — On Wednesday, prosecutors in Central Florida handed down criminal charges against 13 people for counts related to the death of Florida A&M University (FAMU) marching band

member Robert Champion, who was beaten and died following a football game in November. Champion, who was gay, belonged to FAMU’s famed Marching 100, which has performed during Super Bowl halftime shows and at President Obama’s inauguration. Citing the growing concern over hazing and other forms of institutionalized intimidation, Lawson Lamar, the State Attorney for the Ninth Judicial Court (Orange County) warned reporters that “Hazing is something that will continue to happen out of sight until a student like Robert Champion pays the ultimate price.” Lamar said that about two dozen other people also face misdemeanor charges in hazing cases at historically black FAMU that did not result in loss of life. Eleven of the individuals charged in Champion’s death face felony counts, while two are charged with misdemeanors. According to court documents, Champion, 26, died Nov. 19 after being beaten, kicked, and suffocated aboard a school bus by fellow student band members during a hazing ritual. Those familiar with the case say that a tradition known as “Crossing Bus C” required students to walk down the bus’s center aisle while band members punched them. Champion, whose body was found on the bus, was pronounced dead at the hospital. FAMU officials suspended the Marching 100 after Champion’s death and have said that the band might not perform during the 2012 football season. Julian White, the band director, was initially terminated from his job, and then put on paid administrative leave. In 2005, Florida passed a strict anti-hazing law after the drowning death of a college student during a fraternity event. The law makes it easier for prosecutors to treat hazing as a felony. Legal experts say that prosecutors would have had a hard time proving that band members had committed murder or manslaughter, as the participation of so many students in the hazing would make it difficult to prove that a single student caused Champion’s death. Papal Nuncio: Roman Catholics, Muslims, Jews Must “Unite” to Oppose Gay Marriage

Jewish synagogues have thrown their support behind the U.K.’s marriage equality plans, the country’s United Synagogues—British Judaism’s largest sect, which holds its religious authority from the Chief Rabbi of Britain—have come out in opposition, with one prominent London rabbi condemning what he called the government “assault” on religious liberty and values. Edinburgh: “In opposing equality, churches reinforce homophobia in society and that can lead to pain, low self-respect and, in some cases, violence. In the end this is about people who are on the receiving end of prejudice and are suffering because of that. The cycle needs to be broken.” The letter says that the organization and its members will “strongly oppose” any efforts to limit same-sex marriage to civil ceremonies. Faith in Marriage is calling for MSPs to “protect and extend” freedom of religion and faith by “giving those religious and humanist bodies that do want to conduct same-sex marriage the right to do so” in future legislation. Faith in Marriage’s campaign follows on the heels of an anti-gay marriage initiative from opponents Scotland for Marriage, a coalition that includes members of the United Free Church of Scotland, the Church of Scotland, the Evangelical Alliance in Scotland, CARE (Christian Action Research and Education) for Scotland, The Christian Institute, the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches in Scotland, and the Christian Brethren in Scotland. It also has the support of Cardinal Keith O’Brien, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland. The group claims that marriage equality will “dismantle marriage which has only ever meant the union of a man and a woman.”

CARDIFF, WALES, UNITED KINGDOM – The government of Wales is investigating whether a Roman Catholic lobbying group encouraged a campaign against marriage equality in the country’s secondary schools. Welsh Minister for Children and Education Leighton Andrews is looking into allegations that the Catholic Education Service (CES) sent an email last month to all Catholic secondary schools in order to promote an online petition organized by the Coalition for Marriage, a conservative political group. The group’s Web site notes the Roman Catholic Church and its Archbishops support the signaturegathering effort, which opposes progressive changes to the laws on marriage. The British Humanist Association (BHA) has accused the CES of “victimizing” students, and is asking both Andrews and his counterpart in the British government, Education Secretary Michael Gove, to intervene. BHA officials say that the Coalition for Marriage petition violates British political and campaign laws, and is seeking a Roman Catholic student to initiate a court challenge. CES denies the allegations and says that the Roman Catholic view of marriage is a religious, not political one.H

“God is the last refuge of a scoundrel.” Anonymous

M

y partner and I were watching a movie the other night. I can’t recall which one, or what it was about, but one thing that stood out was the signage. By this, I refer to signs being carried by one side in the “conflict” that was being dramatized (although whether that conflict was a military battle or an abortion rights protest, memory doesn’t serve): “GOD Sees!” or something similarly evocative. During all this, my boyfriend turned to me and asked —half innocently, half archly—something to the effect of “How do their opponents [or whatever] feel about God supporting the other side?” to which I replied “God is ALWAYS on both sides.” From the Crusaders’ cry “Deus vult!” (Latin: “It is the will of God!”), to the Germans’ First and Second World War refrain “Gott mit uns!” (“God [is] with us!”), has there ever been a conflict where human blood was shed that divine favor wasn’t invoked by both sides? Even in the Age of Classical Greece, the Trojans and their Hellenic enemies managed to divvy up the Divine Olympians like pre-Bronze Age kickball teams (“Apollo, you’re on the Trojans side, Poseidon, you’re with us. Zeus, you’re Trojan, Hephaestus, Greek.”). In the modern era, this translates to the American brand of political fundamentalism which has by and large held the GOP hostage since the

Reagan Era—from around 1980 to the present—when they abandoned Jimmy Carter (who, unlike Reagan, was actually one of them) and the Democrats to set up a state-withina-state in the Party of Lincoln and Eisenhower. This was much as the Wahhabi mullahs did with the Saudi royal family, who turn a blind eye to the more egregious actions of the Islamic sect’s religious police in the interest of keeping their grip on power. Talk about your deals with the Devil. For the un- (or under-) educated, it would appear that this was always the state of affairs—that religious conservatives held one party or the other to a litmus test of where their candidates stood on DOMA, DADT, ENDA, SNDA, and other “alphabet soup” legislation. They did this with an eye to seeing how mighty a warrior they are in the Cultural War as defined by Pat Buchanan, who held a vice grip upon the bloviating bullhorn of the Socio-Political Right until he became too embarrassing for even that tolerant group of souls. Funny thing, it wasn’t always like this. No one asked John F. Kennedy during the 1960 presidential campaign where he stood on abortion rights. The landmark Supreme Court ruling that legalized reproductive freedom for women wouldn’t be decided until nine years and two months to the day after his assassination. Before Roe v. Wade, the states decided such matters, so Kennedy was spared the battle that another JFK from Massachusetts would not be, two dozen years later, when John F. Kerry was required to incant the formula that would label him “safe” in the eyes of the left, and the enemy in the eyes of the Religious Right. Compare that to the 1960s and 1970s, when Idaho—today one of the reddest of red states—consistently elected a liberal Democrat, Frank

Church, to the U.S. Senate. From 1958 to 1976, Utah elected Democrat Frank Moss, who promoted legislation that protected consumers and the environment, worked tirelessly to ban tobacco ads from TV and radio, and sponsored toy safety, product safety, and poison prevention measures that would be unheard of in the modern Beehive State. It isn’t that Idahoans and Utahans are any less conservative today than they were then. It’s that the argument has shifted away from the common sense things that need to get done (like resurfacing I-95), to hot button topics that generate tons of political contributions (and vitriol), and the sensible political center has literally failed to hold. Ironically, it is these religious and cultural conservatives who may do the most lasting harm to Mitt Romney’s presidential aspirations, as their intolerance for the “different” crosses paths with Romney’s Latter Day Saint (Mormon) religion, which departs from the canon of “mainstream” fundamentalist and Protestant Christianity in so many ways that many theologians consider it a separate religion—when they aren’t referring to it as a cult. These members of the Right may find it hard to build much enthusiasm for someone—Romney—that they suspect is just a little too tolerant of “the gays,” resulting in middling turnout in the places his candidacy will be counting the most on a strong showing. This—coupled with the fact that not all Christians in America are socially conservative, and that those who are remain far from being in love with Romney—could prove to be an opportunity for Obama. And hopefully for us as well. H

It’s Time to Pull the Plug on Federal

“MSM” Blood Ban

By SCOTT GALVIN

Recently, I was speaking to a Gay Studies class at Florida International University, my alma mater. A student asked me which one LGBT law I would change if I were empowered to do so. I’m sure most expected me to say I’d legalize gay marriage, the continued hot topic of the gay community. Instead I answered with something that was not only unexpected, but for many, a topic they didn’t realize existed. I said I would overturn the federal ban on gay men donating blood. Since 1985, gay men have not been able to legally donate blood in the United States. This policy was instituted by our government in the earliest, most fearful days of the AIDS epidemic. When so little was known about the disease, reactionary officials instituted the ban as a way to ensure the nation’s blood supply would remain “clean.” The gay rights movement has many fields of battle. In recent months,

Congress has repealed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” President Obama signed a bill extending hate crime protections to sexual orientation, and more and more states allow same-sex marriage. But to our list of equality issues, we should immediately add overturning a ridiculous Federal policy which jeopardizes the well-being of each of us. We should fight to overturn the Federal ban on gay men (“MSMs,” or men who have sex with men) donating blood. The good news is that there is a growing movement afoot in Washington, DC to do it. Under the leadership of U.S. Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) and U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL), the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has outlined concrete steps toward ending the outdated, discriminatory lifetime ban on gay and bisexual men from donating blood. In 2010, a group of 18 U.S. Senators led by Massachusetts’s Kerry penned

‘MARRIAGE’ continued from Page 1

“warrior”). Upon Guerrero’s appearance and following several minutes of reunion, Huston asked for Guerrero’s hand in marriage, producing an engagement ring and asking “Will you marry me?” as reported by LGBT Weekly. After Guerrero accepted with a simple “Yes,” he admitted that he was “blown away.” “I was shocked that after all we’d been through, he would honestly want to spend the rest of his life with someone like me,” Guerrero said. Guerrero told CNN that he thought at first that Huston was breaking up with him because he had first asked the Marine to remove his “promise ring.” “Once he got down on one knee, I literally started thinking, like, ‘Is he serious? Is he really going to ask me to marry him after everything we’ve been through?’” Huston—who was discharged from the Navy in 2006 under DADT—said their engagement sends a positive message to LGBT troops. “It’s important to us ’cause we got engaged,” he explained, “but it’s also important because there’s young gay people coming out of boot camp who, even though it’s okay to be gay in the

military, there’s still a stigma and I want them to be like, ‘Okay, well other people have done it, so I don’t have to be ashamed of who I am.’” He added, “I spent too many years being ashamed of who I was and trying to be someone I wasn’t.” LGBT advocates say that the proposal represents the most recent in a series of turning points for gay servicemembers and their partners. In December, Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta was photographed—in what came to be called the “kiss heard ’round the world”— in a loving embrace with her partner, Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Citlalic Snell after Gaeta’s ship returned its Virginia Beach base. The image was compared with the iconic picture by photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt depicting nurse Edith Shain locked in a kiss with an unknown sailor at the close of the Second World War. Gaeta had won in a charity raffle the honor of the service’s traditional “first kiss.” Also groundbreaking was the picture taken in February of a gay Marine sharing a kiss with his boyfriend at Marine Corps Base Hawaii with his boyfriend, also went viral. H

a letter to FDA officials calling for an end to an “outdated, medically and scientifically unsound” policy. Most Americans—including many gays—do not even realize the ban is still in place. The FIU gay issues class students I addressed were well-versed in gay marriage, bullying, AIDS awareness, and the usual gay rights issues. But when I brought up the blood ban, very few of the people in attendance knew it existed. Obviously, thanks to modern science, we now know much more about the

spread of HIV and AIDS than we did in 1985. Truly, this ban is unnecessary and outdated. Donated blood is screened thoroughly between the time it is donated and when it is used for medical procedures. Technology easily helps us catch any tainted blood before it can be given to someone in need. I have begun to reach out to my Congresspersons and various gay rights organizations. With President Obama in the White House, we have an amazing chance to end a moronic and discriminatory policy. Two thousand twelve is a watershed year for the gay rights movement. Let us also make this the year. H

Homophobic Behavior May Equate to Latent Homosexuality By Phoebe moses

Justin Bieber Impersonator Arrested for Online Child Pornography

M

ONTGOMERY, AL – An Alabama man has been arrested, charged with child pornography and sexual exploitation after falsely assuming the identity of performer Justin Bieber and enticing underage girls to perform sexual acts online. Christopher Patrick Gunn of Montgomery is accused of persuading the girls to perform sexual acts in exchange for free tickets and backstage passes to Bieber’s performances. Afterwards, he threatened to post their images and videos to pornographic sites when they learned the truth of his impersonation. Beginning in 2009, Gunn, 32, faked his identity on Facebook. He was arrested on March 20 after FBI agents searched his house and seized a laptop and a cell phone that contained videos and images of child pornography. Court documents says that between 2009 and last summer, Gunn posed as a member of “New Kids on the Block,” and then, beginning in November 2011, he impersonated Bieber to lure underage girls, some as young as nine years old. The children resided in Florida, California, and Virginia, among other places. Gunn is charged with committing multiple crimes, including two counts of child pornography, 10 counts of sexual exploitation, three counts of interstate extortion, and three counts of using interstate commerce in furtherance of unlawful activity. He is also currently on probation in Florida, related to convictions for theft, burglary, and other crimes. Authorities in New Jersey have also arrested a man who intimidated underage girls into performing sex acts online while impersonating Bieber. Lee Moir, of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, also used Facebook to engage young girls into performing lewd acts for him. Moir, 34, threatened and sexually abused a 12-year-old New Jersey girl during a video chat session after posing as Bieber on the social networking site. Officials say the girl realized that Moir wasn’t the pop star during a video chat, but that he threatened to harm the girl’s family if she didn’t perform for him online. The Essex County, New Jersey prosecutor’s office says that Moir has been in contact via the Internet with “many juvenile females” in the U.S., Canada, France, and elsewhere overseas. Moir was arrested April 18 after an undercover Canadian investigator posed as a 14-year-old girl online. Authorities say Moir engaged in sexual conversations with the officer and was arrested after he requested a meeting. He has been charged by Canadian authorities with luring, manufacturing child pornography, and extortion. Nebraska Football Coach takes Public Stand against LGBT Rights OMAHA, NE – Ron Brown, an assistant football coach for University of Nebraska’s Cornhuskers, told the Omaha City Council last month that a proposed ordinance to ban discrimination based upon sexual orientation is a “sin,” and may address the Lincoln, Nebraska City Council’s May 7 meeting to take a

similar stand against a proposed measure in that municipality. Although University officials have taken issue with Brown listing his address as “Memorial Stadium,” implying that he is speaking for the school, and Nebraska Chancellor Harvey Perlman said he was “personally offended” by the remarks, there has been no further move to censure the coach, who is in his fifth season with the Cornhuskers. Brown himself remains unapologetic and defiant, telling reporters that “To be fired for my faith would be a greater honor than to be fired because we didn’t win enough games.” Although he was criticized by LGBT rights groups for the harmful impact his comments could have on gay students in particular and promoting a hostile environment for gay athletes in general, Brown scoffed, saying “I haven’t lost any sleep over it. I realize at some point, we live in a politically correct enough culture where [being fired] very well could happen.” Barbara Baier, a member of the Lincoln Board of Education, has called for Brown to be terminated. “He says terrible things about members of my community—citizens of this country, people who have not committed any crimes,” said Baier in a letter to school officials. “He compares gays and lesbians to people who have committed crimes, people who are desiring to go and cause the destruction of the American family, and nothing could be further from the truth.” If Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne’s comments are any indication, Brown does not have much to fear for his job. “I think it’s important that there be clarity with what you do in your capacity at the university and what you do as a private citizen,” Osborne said. Wrestler’s Ex-Wife Retracts Allegations of Gay Affair NEW YORK, NY – The ex-wife of professional wrestling star Hulk Hogan has retracted claims that her former husband engaged in a homosexual affair with a fellow wrestler while they were married. Appearing on the syndicated program “The Wendy Williams Show” this week, Linda Hogan said that statements she made in her 2011 memoir “Wrestling the Hulk: My Life Against the Ropes” about an alleged affair between her ex and fellow wrestler Brutus Beefcake were taken out of context. “When you’re mad and you’re going through a divorce, you say things you just don’t mean,” Hogan said, adding in a message meant for her former husband “Hulkster, I’m sorry. I love and I will always love you.” Late last year, Hulk filed a defamation suit against his ex. Hulk—also known by his real name, Terrance Gene “Terry” Bollea—appeared on Williams’ show in February to defend himself against the gay rumors. “It’s tough because a lot of my friends in normal life, a lot of my friends in the entertainment business, and a lot of my friends in the wrestling business are gay,” he said at the time. “If it was true and I was gay, I’d embrace it, and I’d tell you guys about it and I’d celebrate it.” H

A

new study, published this month in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, reports that homophobia can result—at least partially—from suppressing same-sex attraction. The study analyzed six separate experiments conducted by researchers on approximately 800 university students in the U.S. and Germany, and provides empirical evidence that some homophobic individuals are in actuality manifesting externally the repressed sexual attraction they are experiencing for members of the same sex. According to the study’s lead author, Dr. Netta Weinstein, a psychology professor at the University of Essex (U.K.): “Individuals who identify as straight but in psychological tests show a strong attraction to the same sex may be threatened by gays and lesbians because homosexuals remind them of similar tendencies within themselves.” This hypothesis—that same-sex attraction, repressed by shame, fear, or other negative responses, manifests outwardly as homophobia— was acknowledged by one of the people cited in the research as examples of the theory: Ted Haggard, the evangelist whose pulpit blazed with the righteous fire of a brimstone-filled future for gay men (until a gay sex scandal involving a male hustler resulted in his resigning in disgrace) said in his apology during the scandal, “I think I was partially so vehement because of my own war [with same-sex attraction].” Freud referred to this as a “reaction formation.” “In many cases these are people who are at war with themselves and they are turning this internal conflict outward,” said Dr. Richard Ryan, professor of psychology and psychiatry at the University of Rochester, and the study’s co-author. Previous research conducted in 1996 by University of Georgia Department of Psychology found that hostility to gays is associated with homosexual arousal: this arousal was either unknown to or denied by the homophobic person who was experiencing it. The current study supports this, adding that those subjects who reported being heterosexual, but who experienced homosexual attraction under study conditions, were more likely to be homophobic. Besides Haggard, the new study also offered other recent examples of religious and political conservatives who have made a career of opposition to LGBT rights—only to be outed in the most public and (often for their families) shameful of circumstances. Among those cited: former U.S. Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho, an opponent of including sexual identity in federal hate crimes statutes who was arrested for lewd behavior in a Minneapolis men’s room after he approached an undercover police officer for sexual favors; and Glenn Murphy Jr., a rising star in the GOP and former National Chair of the Young Republicans and opponent of marriage equality, who pleaded guilty in 2007 following accusations that he had performed oral sex on a sleeping 22-year-old man. “We laugh at or make fun of such blatant hypocrisy, but in a real way, these people may often themselves be victims of repression and experience exaggerated feelings of threat,” added Ryan. “Homophobia is not a laughing matter. It can sometimes have tragic consequences,” citing the

1998 murder of Matthew Shepard and the 2008 shooting death of 15 year old Lawrence King. In the study published this month, participants were asked to rate their sexual orientation on a scale from one to 10, from gay to straight. A computer-administered test assessed their ‘implicit’ and ‘explicit’ sexual orientations, including how they reacted to words (“gay,” “homosexual”) and images of a sexual nature during a split-second timed task. Pictures of gay and straight couples were displayed for tracking participant reactions, and they were likewise asked to agree or disagree with phrases that described their relationships with their parents, such as “I felt free to be who I am,” or “I felt controlled and pressured in certain ways.” The level of tolerance in their homes was measured with responses to such statements as “My dad avoids gay men whenever possible,” and “It would be upsetting for my mom to find out she was alone with a lesbian.” The study suggests that at least some of those with intense feelings of hostility to gay people were likely themselves to have been the victims of oppression and intolerance. Displaying the word “me” or “other” for the briefest of intervals onscreen before each word or image was flashed, the authors say that the participants subliminally processed the word through “semantic association.” (When the word “me” precedes a word or image that reflects the viewer’s actual sexual orientation, these images are mentally sorted into the correct category faster than when “me” precedes those words or images that do not accurately reflect sexual orientation.) The study authors say this methodology is similar to tests that are used to measure other traits, like a subconscious racial bias. The researchers identified those study participants who, in spite of a “straight” self-identification, displayed same-sex attraction (that is, they associated “me” with gay-related words and pictures faster than they associated “me” with straight-related words and pictures). The authors said that more than 20 percent of such self-described “straight” individuals showed this discrepancy. Like the aforementioned Haggard, Craig, and Murphy, the study reported that other individuals who reflect this “discrepancy” are at a far greater likelihood of supporting policies and laws that are hostile to LGBT individuals. In short, a significant number of those who express homophobic and hostile attitudes towards gays are likely to manifest some measure of same-gender attraction. The authors note that participants who had supportive parents and who grew up in a tolerant environment were more likely to accept their own implicit sexual identity, while the opposite holds true for those reared in controlling, intolerant homes. Yolk It Up

Whole Eggs: Nature’s Perfect Food By Andy kress

B

reakfast dishes would not be quite the same without the incredible, edible egg. This healthy protein is one of the top choices when Americans sit down in the morning before heading off to work, or relax at a Sunday brunch. Yet recently eggs have been getting a bad rap, as a new health conscious fad suggests that it’s healthier to eat the egg white alone, disposing of the yolk which has been labeled as ladened with fat and cholesterol. Restaurants have jumped on the bandwagon. One can choose to have egg white only omelets, burritos, and breakfast sandwiches. Cutting down calories per sitting seems to be a wise and health conscious choice. In theory, getting rid of the fatty part of the egg should help those individuals who want to lose those last few extra pounds. The mistake in this logic is that with the affordable egg, Mother Nature has given us a complete perfect food. Toss out the yolk, and you’ll be missing out on the healthiest part of the egg! The yolk is very high in antioxidants, a spectrum of vitamins and minerals, as well as healthy cholesterol-fighting Omega-3 fats and all of the essential fatty acids. Yolks contain vitamin A, plus vitamins B6 and B12, other trace minerals, choline, foliate, lecithin and lutien (which gives egg yolks their color). B vitamins are especially helpful for nerve function, while lecithin is a natural emulsifier rich in choline, which aids in the process of fat metabolization in the body. Although the body already produces enough choline for normal needs, added dietary sources aid in reducing the accumulation of fat in the liver and help repair neurological damage. Lutien is an antioxidant, which helps in the prevention of inflammation (which is a major factor in fighting heart disease), and also helps strengthen the eyes. The yolk also contains 90% of the calcium in the egg, far outweighing the

egg white. Iron, phosphorus, zinc and panthothentic acid are only found in the egg yolk, but not the white. In addition, the yolks also contain all of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. The Omega-3 fats in eggs are essential to lowering fat and cholesterol. Eating the entire egg actually raises your good HDL levels and lowers your LDL levels. This helps improve the overall cholesterol ratio and blood chemistry in your body. This helps keep the fat burning hormones in the body in check, keeping more fat from being stored and burning more of the fat that is already there. This should be duly noted by anyone who is trying to lose weight. As wonderful as the egg yolk sounds, consume it in moderation. The American Heart Association recommends consuming no more than four egg yolks a week. Eating the correct amount of yolks along with the egg whites keeps cholesterol levels within the AHA guidelines of 300mg a day. The extra calories in the egg yolk are really no extra calories at all when you look in the grand scheme of your day. Egg yolks do contain more calories than egg whites, but the yolks micro-nutrient-rich density of those calories actually aids in appetite regulation. This helps you eat less and lowers overall calorie intake for the day. Oh, and one more thing: Eggs yolks contain all of the flavor! Next time you go to toss out that powerhouse of energy and nutrients, stop yourself, armed with the knowledge that you’re starting your bright, new sun-shiny day correctly.

Marvin Nathan is a performer whose time has come over and over again. For nearly 37 years, the multi-talented Nathan has been entertaining people in every medium from live performance to television. As “Cousin Ira” on the hit CBS series “The Nanny” starring Fran Dresher, Nathan came to Cher’s rescue when the legendary performer was trapped in the show’s Sheffield househo¬d following a little cosmetic “touch up.” To distract her fans and enable Cher to escape from the house, Nathan as “Cousin Ira” impersonated Cher—complete with Bob Mackie gown—in a sidesplitting stroll down the mansion’s grand staircase. Nathan began his entertainment career on July 4, 1976—America’s bicentennial. “It was the Eight Thousand Resort in Miami, and Dana Manchester put me in drag. It was the most successful show at that time,” he relates. That success led to some professional choices from the newly-

minted drag diva. “I decided it was time to move on. My mom was ill in Scottsdale, Arizona. I packed up and started a show in Phoenix, and within six months, we were a huge hit. I had an offer to go to California, so I packed Mom up and we moved.” In California, Nathan found himself in the center of a bidding war for his talents. “I got an offer from ‘La Cage’ in Hollywood to perform, but I instead chose to go to the [luxury liner] Queen Mary, and I was there for 10 years.” The death of his mother was especially hard. “I was devastated,” the entertainer admits. “She was my best friend. “Three days after Mom died, I got a call from Norbert Aleman [the legendary producer of ‘La Cage,’ then the world’s

preeminent female impersonation show], who wanted me to come to Las Vegas and star in his revue,” says Nathan. “I never auditioned, I was just told ‘Be here for two shows daily.’” It was back on the road for the performer. “I packed up my Cadillac Fleetwood and headed to Vegas. I was at ‘La Cage’ for four years doing my ‘Queensized Cher,’” he says. Later, Nathan made the TV talk show rounds, appearing on “Maury Povich,” “Sally Jesse Rafael,” “Talk Soup,” “The Man Show,” and many others. After appearing on the island of Cyprus and in Amsterdam, Nathan received a call from a fellow drag entertainer from “La Cage.” “Frank Marino was opening a show in—of all places—Kansas City, Missouri.

So, once again I packed up the gowns and off I went. I became the show director, revamped the show, and it became a huge success. Then I packed up and went to Atlanta. I was there for a year and then I moved back to Fort Lauderdale and took a position at Dudes,” where he performed for a year until a format change by management altered the venue’s entertainment. “I hate when they do that,” he concedes. “But you roll with the punches.” “Now I am back here and I hope that this is the last move for a LONG while,” Nathan laughs. Back in South Florida on a “permanent” basis, Nathan will be delighting fans old and new with performances on May 21 at “Dancing with the South Florida Stars II” (he is also a judge) benefitting the not-for-profit Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation. He will also be on the June 3 Gay Tea Cruise in Fort Lauderdale. Any spot in the world, Nathan’s star still burns brightly. . H

Erectile Disorder

Y

BY Arlen Leight, Ph.D.

ou cannot pick up a magazine or watch a television show today without some advertisement for so-called “E.D.” treatment. Erectile disorder is often called erectile dysfunction or impotence and is the most common sexual disorder for men. Ironically, “dysfunction” and “impotence” inaccurately and often inadvertently contribute to a man’s feeling powerless over his erection. As with most sexual disorders, the inability to attain or maintain an erection or complete erection may result from biological and/or psychological causes. Low levels of testosterone, a natural part of aging, can contribute to issues with libido as well as erection problems. Testosterone supplementation is often sufficient to care for E.D., not to mention the benefits of increased energy and improved mood. Drugs, medication and alcohol are very frequently the cause of erectile challenges. Reducing or eliminating drugs and alcohol may be the solution. Ask your physician if any of the medications you are taking can contribute to erectile issues. These may include high blood pressure medications and anti-depressants. Often there are other medications available that can be substituted without the same sexual side effects. Diseases such as diabetes and coronary artery disease are also associated with erectile disorder. Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra can be effective medications for Erectile Disorder of physical origin. Other treatments including penile implants, and injections into the penis are also available for E.D. that originates from medically-related conditions. Vacuum aspirators (penis pumps) and venous retention rings (cock rings) offer varying degrees of success for E.D., as well. I tend to recommend trying a cock ring as a simple first choice for E.D. or for increasing the firmness of erections. While there are multiple physical reasons for erectile disorder, the primary cause is performance anxiety, not uncommonly related to lack of erotic desire for one’s partner. Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra are not aphrodisiacs, and they do not produce desire. Trying to overcome desire challenges with one of these medications will not work. When the underlying cause of E.D. is psychological, a cognitive-behavioral sex therapy approach works best. E.D. can be rapidly cured by using the mind to redirect the focus of attention during sex. While a

man who ejaculates prematurely does well to direct his focus away from the object of erotic desire, a man who has difficulty achieving erection or ejaculation does well to direct his focus toward the object of erotic desire. Performance anxiety is essentially a misdirected focus of attention on matters other than an object of sexual desire. When you are concerned about your ability to satisfy your partner or you are self-conscious about your body, or your mind is thinking about some problem at work, you are not focused on the sexual stimulus—the partner or fantasy in your mind. Similarly, when you move out of the moment of sexual connection and pleasure you are no longer focused on the sexual stimulus. Redirection is necessary in order to be sexual. One of the most enjoyable aspects of sex is losing yourself in the moment with your partner. Worry, anxiety, concern, and fear take you out of the here-and-now of sexual experience. Because sexual challenges are multifaceted and may include medical, biological, psychological, and/or social factors, they may not be a simple matter to address. Taking matters into your own hands may or may not work for you, which is why diagnosing and treating sexual problems is sometimes best accomplished by licensed health professionals. Working with your physician, (sex) therapist or clinical sexologist, your diagnosis and treatment can be most effectively accomplished. H

Lobster Bisque

This Week’s Delicious Recipe

A

By JEAN DOHERTY

bisque is a smooth, creamy, highlyseasoned soup of French origin. It’s rich and decadent. It’s classically based on a strained broth or “coulis” of crustaceans. It can be made from lobster, crab, shrimp or crayfish. In authentic bisque, the shells are ground to a fine paste and added to thicken the soup.

• 1 3 ¼ lbs. lobster heads • 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 small onion, chopped • 1 small carrot, chopped • 1 stick celery, chopped • 1 sprig thyme • 1 bay leaf • 1 large tomato • 1 tbsp tomato puree • 1 tsp cayenne pepper, plus extra to serve • 1 tbsp brandy • A pint of dry white wine • 2 pints of fish stock • A pint of veal stock • A pint of heavy cream • 8 tsp Armagnac brandy • Sea salt mash the lobster heads with your rolling pin until they are well broken up. Have a blast. Let ‘em have it!!! Heat the olive oil in a thick-assed saucepan and cook the onion, carrot and celery over a low heat. When the vegetables are lightly browned, add the

parsley, thyme and bay leaf and the lobster heads, stirring so that they don’t stick or burn. Add the tomatoes, tomato purée, cayenne pepper and the brandy. Stir well, then add the wine. Bring to the boil and cook for at least 3 minutes. Add the fish stock and veal stock and bring back to the boil. Season lightly with sea salt. Simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally and skimming off any scum that appears on the surface. Drain through a colander set over a clean saucepan pressing the lobster bones well to extract all the juices and flavor. To serve, bring the soup back to the boil and allow it to reduce. Add up to a pint of heavy cream, according to your taste, and boil for 5 minutes. Pour 2 teaspoons of Armagnac per person into four warmed soup bowls and pour the soup over it. If you have any lobster claw meat available add that too. Sprinkle with cayenne pepper and serve immediately. You are the chef!

Although born in Dublin, Ireland, chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.
