Anti-Gay Groups Lose in Court MIAMI, FL--Circuit Court Judge Sarah Zabel ruled that three anti-gay groups who oppose marriage equality for same-sex couples cannot intervene as parties in Pareto v. Ruvin, the lawsuit challenging Florida’s discriminatory marriage laws in the circuit court for Miami Dade County. The groups include Florida Family Action, Inc. (FFAI), Florida Democratic League Inc. (FDL) and People United to Lead the Struggle for Equality, Inc. (PULSE)—groups that support the discriminatory marriage

Denying their request to be parties in the case, Judge Zabel found that these groups did not have a concrete legal interest in the case because they “will not be directly and immediately affected if others enter into a same-sex marriage, or are prevented from entering into a same-sex marriage.” The court also noted that the “validity of their own marriages will not be affected,” adding that if these groups could enter the case as parties simply because they have strong beliefs about the issues in the case, “so would anyone who has a strongly held belief regarding the constitutionality of the Amendment and statutes at issue in this suit.”

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi

Fla. Attorney General Says Same-Sex Marriage “Imposes Significant Public Harm” TALLAHASSEE, FL—Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi committed what many consider political suicide by stating in publicly-filed court documents that recognizing same-sex marriages performed in other states would disrupt existing marriage laws and “impose significant public harm” in Florida. Bondi was responding to a lawsuit filed by eight gay couples and the American Civil Liberties Union who sued the state in federal court last March. The lawsuit does not ask for the right to have same-sex marriage legalized in Florida, but rather argues that the state is discriminating against the couples by not recognizing samesex marriages performed in states where they are legal. Bondi is asking the lawsuit be thrown out by the courts, stating that a federal court has no jurisdiction over state law. Additionally, Bondi raised eyebrows and a slew of additional legal issues by the wording of her response to the Federal suit. Florida initally banned same-sex marriages almost 20 years ago, and reinforced the ban via a constitutional amendment in 2008. “Florida’s marriage laws, then, have a close, direct, and rational relationship to society’s legitimate interest in increasing the likelihood that children will be

born to and raised by the mothers and fathers who produced them in stable and enduring family units,” Bondi’s office said in court documents. While outlining no specific details, Bondi also suggested that there would be significant financial and logistical problems for the state’s pension and helath insurance programs if Florida recognized same-sex marriage performed in other states. Daniel Tilley, the lead attorney for the ACLU of Florida countered, “Florida’s discriminatory laws cause serious harm to real families across the state. Despite the state’s assertion that the harms to same-sex married couples aren’t significant enough to warrant relief, the families living every day being treated like legal strangers by their home state know better.” Governor Rick Scott, like Bondi a Republican, commented earlier in the year that he supports Florida’s constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman, but confused the issue by adding the politically righteous statement that he “does not believe that anyone should be discriminated against for any reason.” The lawsuit in Florida is part of a groundswell of public support in the gay marriage debate, including court challenges in every state that still bans same-sex marriages (with the exception of North Carolina where a suit is expected soon). Several federal judges have previously ruled in support of same-sex marriage since the U.S. Supreme Court last year struck down part of the federal anti-gay marriage law.

Fundamentalist Christian group American Family Association is demanding that its members and others not to accept any mail postmarked with the U.S. Postal Service’s newly released Harvey Milk stamp, the first U.S. stamp to feature an openly gay elected official. “Honoring predator Harvey Milk on a U.S. postage stamp is disturbing to say the least. Harvey Milk was a very disreputable man and used his charm and power to prey on young boys with emotional problems and drug addiction,” an AFA press release said last week. “He is the last person we should be featuring on a stamp.” The radical organization, labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty

Law Center in 2010, ranted that the Harvey Milk commemorative stamp was the result of “seven years of lobbying by a self-described drag queen (a biological man with implanted breasts) and former transsexual prostitute Nicole Murray Ramirez of San Diego.” In reality, Nicole Murray-Ramirez has been an LGBT activist for over 45 years and is currently a San Diego appointed city human rights commissioner. Murray-Ramirez has served the last five mayors of San Diego, and was elected as the chair of the first mayoral GLBT Advisory Board and the first GLBT Advisory Board to the chief of police. The inflammatory press release suggested that citizens “refuse to accept the Harvey Milk stamp if offered by your local post office” and “instead, ask for a stamp of the United States flag. In addition, the release suggests that citizens “refuse to accept mail at your home or business if it is postmarked with the Harvey Milk stamp. Simply write ‘Return to

Sender’ on the envelope and tell your postman you won’t accept it.”

Social Security Object of Marriage Equality Act Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), joined by Rep. Ron Kind (D-WI), Allyson Schwartz (D-PA) and Elizabeth Esty (D-CT), introduced the Social Security and Marriage Equality (SAME) Act, legislation aimed at amending the federal code to ensure all lawfully married same-sex couples will receive Social Security spousal benefits. Since the Supreme Court decision last June in Windsor v. U.S. striking down a key section of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the Obama Administration has proceeded in implementing the decision across the federal government. While the Social Security Administration has moved forward on spousal benefits for people living in marriage

states, as well as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicare, it has not yet addressed spousal retirement, spousal survivor, and lump sum death benefits for married couples living in states that do not allow same-sex couples to marry. Nor has it determined that those joined in civil unions and registered domestic partnerships are eligible for spousal benefits based on their ability to inherit from their spouses/partners without a will under state law. This leaves thousands of legally married same-sex couples, most of whom are living on fixed incomes, without financial support they have earned and are entitled to by law. The SAME Act would guarantee that all legally married same-sex couples are provided access to social security benefit regardless of where they live. Equality Florida made note that Sens. Patty Murray (D-WA), Mark Udall (D-CO) and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), are spearheading the Senate companion bill.

ICOSIA, CYPRUS—Cyprus, the third largest island in the Mediterranean by land mass and population, celebrated gay pride last week in its first ever show of solidarity for the LBGT community. The inaugural event attracted an estimated 3,000 among the residents of this island of one million. “This proves that Cypriot society has progressed much more than politicians say,” ACCEPT-LGBT Cyprus president Costas Gavrielides told The Associated Press. The turnout was a wake-up call for shocked president Nicos Anastasiades and his ruling party. Though Cyprus is in the European Union and has a thriving economy and tourist trade, there has been little progress made on gay rights other than unfulfilled promises. “We hope Cyprus becomes a European Union member country that respects rights not only in words, but in deeds as well,” said leading Cypriot gay rights pioneer Alecos Modinos. In the early 1990s, Modinos was successful in a legal battle to decriminalize homosexuality on the island by overturning a law that had been on the books for generations. A small group of representatives from the Cyprus Orthodox Christian Church demonstrated against the parade which it labeled “shameful” and calling homosexuality “the human being’s fall from grace and an illness and not a natural way of life or choice.”

lorida Attorney General Pam Bondi is either extremely naïve or is so out of touch with her political base that she has lost track of both her responsibility to them and to the people of Florida. Recently, I’m sure you’ve heard, Bondi responded to a lawsuit filed last March by eight gay couples and the American Civil Liberties Union. The lawsuit argues that the state of Florida is discriminating against those couples and others by not recognizing same-sex marriages performed in states where they are legal. Bondi’s official response can be read in its entirety should you care to wade through the legal jargon and political rhetoric that inspired it. But there is a paragraph that you should not miss. “Florida’s marriage laws have a close, direct and rational relationship with society’s legitimate interest in increasing the likelihood that children will be born to and raised by the mothers and fathers who produced them in stable and enduring family units.” Before I go any further, let me be clear about one thing. I could not agree more that children deserve to grow up in a loving and nurturing environment. To Bondi, that apparently means a husband and a wife living with children they have conceived and birthed. By her court response that is the complete reality of the bubble that constitutes a “family unit.” Forget the husband and wife that have adopted a child or two. Forget the woman who gives birth as a single mother. There is no place for them in Florida according to Bondi and by association our governor Rick Scott. But this case is not about those people—straight and loving and hopefully living in “stable and enduring family units.” This case is about recognizing same-sex marriages that are totally legal in many parts of the United States. In

those states, a man who loves another man, or a woman who’s crazy about another women, can marry, flourish and raise children, pay taxes and grow old, without ever worrying that someone will suggest that their love and their stability is any less real than a man and a women who are similarly wed and form a family. Before you ask, Bondi is a Republican of the most fundamental form. She is a member of the Tea Party, and carries all the political clout and baggage that such an affiliation merits. But like many members of the Tea Party, the plastic bubble in which they live is not transparent. They can not see out into the real world of very real families that include interracial couples, adopted children, gay men, lesbian women, and, lest I forget, the under acknowledged bisexual and transgender population who have family units as well. Bondi says it is her responsibility to the people of Florida to defend the law. “In 2008, Florida voters amended their state constitution to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman,” said in a statement released Tuesday. “In response to a recent challenge to this provision, and in keeping with my sworn duty to uphold the laws of the land, my office recently filed a legal brief defending the voters’ decision,” she writes. What Bondi is failing to understand is that the world— and Florida’s place in it—has changed since 2008. In the Attorney General’s rush to defend some voters’ rights, she has stomped on many others. She places same-sex families is a class of subspecies that would do “harm” to the state by merely existing. In doing so, she does more than attempt to defend a law that gives the state the right to discriminate. She trivializes same-sex marriage and those families they nurture. And there is the real harm. Real families, real people, real love.

In 2010, they received extensive radio airplay for the song “Unstoppable”—a song featured in Super Bowl XLIV, the MLB network commercials, and the video game “NHL 11.” They’re no stranger to wild musical acts, having once toured with Courtney “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” one of the musicals nominated for the Tony Awards, broadcast at Alibi with Dame Edna as host. Ruthie and Connie: Every Room in the House Ruthie Berman and Connie Kurtz are living heroes of the gay rights movement. In 1988, Berman and Kurtz became national celebrities when they sued New York City Board of Education for domestic partner benefits. During that time, they appeared on talk shows like “The Phil Donahue Show” and “Geraldo.” In 1995, they eventually won the case. Due to their hard fought efforts, all New York employees are offered domestic partner benefits to this day. This 2002 film “Ruthie and Connie: Every Room in the House” by Deborah Dickson highlights their accomplishments. The film won seven documentary awards the year it was released. Still, Castrataro doesn’t get to brag or vent even when he wins. “We settle a lot of these cases out of court and when we do, there is a gag order in place and we don’t get to publicize the situation. That’s one of the conditions of the settlement. It does not mean that the discrimination has gone away. Just that it has been hidden.” But what no longer has to stay hidden is the genuine kindness extended to the needy by the Castrataro Law Firm. Remember that when you see those big billboards and the familiar face on those bus benches. A compassionate attorney is hard to find.

ou’ve seen his face smiling from magazine and newspaper advertisements. He’s on billboards, and on bus stop benches. No doubt about it. George Castrataro is a major attorney with some important clients. But what isn’t known is the amount of pro bono work that the Castrataro firm does as part of its basic business plan. Getting George Castrataro to speak about it isn’t so easy. He’s not one to brag about helping the poor or downtrodden. But Castrataro began his law career as a attorney in Legal Aid. And helping those who are without means to help themselves is part of his mindset. “When the firm was first started,” Castrataro told the Agenda, “the concept was that we could generate enough income from fee-paying clients to do some good work. It may have been a lofty concept, but we thought if we could make 10 percent of our business free or pro bono, we would be doing well. Today, we’ve well exceeded that as a base.” It’s a two-part concept, according to Castrataro. “There is the cash portion, where we just give money in the form of sponsorships and donations: to just about everyone in town; and then there are the pro bono case which don’t fit into any single category. “I think the largest is the LGBT employment discrimination cases. There is no rule that says you can’t fire someone because they’re gay. There is a county code that is so unenforceable with no teeth that it’s essentially useless. We have so many LGBT employment discrimination cases now that we have one attorney in our practice that just does that. Both the state and federal legislative system have been unsuccessful in passing law which would include anti-gay discrimination, so we deal with it here locally on a case by case basis. “I represent one of the division chairs at Jackson Memorial Hospital., the teaching facility for the University of Miami’s Medical School,” Castrataro says. “He is a medical doctor and a professor. We are alleging that this doctor is being paid less by the University of Miami than his comparably situated peers because he is gay. He is more qualified than most, but originally paid less. And while the university adjusted his salary after our complaint, now our client wants retroactive pay, and the case itself hasn’t gotten visibility yet. But when (university president) Donna Salala is being deposed, I suspect some people will notice it. Still, it’s a big jump from litigating gay discrimination to wage discrimination because of sexual orientation.” Even now, with court victories in the same-sex marriage arena, not everyone is being treated equally. “We are hearing all these marriage victory stories and it’s giving the impression that the LGBT community is making forward progress. It is not entirely the case. If you sit here and you see people crying in our offices, you know we’ve got a long way to go. We currently are carrying a workload of about 500 cases, and of those, about a quarter are discrimination issues. And a lot of them are pro bono cases.”

CROSSFIT: FORGING THE FITTEST MEN AND WOMEN ON EARTH CrossFit is a phenomenon that has revolutionized the fitness industry. Started by an unconventional personal trainer named Greg Glassman in a 1,250-square-foot warehouse in Santa Cruz, Calif. in 2000, CrossFit now has well over 5,000 affiliates in 67 countries, including 2,300-plus in the United States. Criticized by some traditional fitness trainers as being too intense, this “cult” is undeniably forging some of the fittest men and women on earth. What’s the core principle behind CrossFit

training? If you ask CHASE BRENDLE, head coach at Club One CrossFit in Oakland Park, Fla., it means being able to move large loads over long distances quickly. “The capacity to do high volumes of work not only prepares you for anything life throws your way, it also produces amazing results amazingly fast,” Chase explains. The rapid physical changes seen in strength and in one’s physical appearance are due in part to the compound movements used. Movements

SQUAT – The squat works the entire body. The quads and hamstrings in the legs do the lifting, while the core stabilizes your back, and your arms lock the bar onto your shoulders. Begin with the bar on your shoulders, usually by starting underneath it in the rack, standing tall to lift it up, then taking several steps back to allow space for the exercise. Send your hips back, as though you are sitting in a chair. Continue sitting back while keeping your chest up, your back arched, and your head neutral. As you reach the bottom, your hip crease should pass below the top of your knee, and your knees should track wide over the ankles. To complete the squat squeeze your hamstrings and glutes, returning to the standing position.

DEADLIFT – Stand with the bar against the shins, feet parallel under the hips. Keeping the back arched, bend from the hip and place the hands shoulder width on the bar. The knees may bend slightly in order to keep the back arched. The shoulders should be in front of the bar at the bottom position. Push the hips back to activate the hamstrings. You should feel a stretch in the back of the leg. Keeping the head neutral and the back arched stand up to a fully vertical position.

like the Squat, Shoulder Press, Deadlift and Pull-up (explained below) use multiple muscle groups. “By recruiting more muscle, you are burning more calories, increasing your neuro-endocrine (hormone) response, and building muscle at an increased rate than with isolation training,” Chase says. “Combining compound movements in a constantly varied pattern, and with intervals of metabolic conditioning (cardio), takes your fitness to the next level.” Chase demonstrates the exercises:

SHOULDER PRESS – Start with the feet parallel under the hips, core tight, and the bar racked on the chest. The elbows should be slightly in front of the bar, hands shoulder width apart. Shift the head back without lifting the chin so the bar can travel straight up to the overhead position. At the top, the shoulders should be shrugged up, with the armpits forward and the head between the arms. Return the bar to the racked position on the chest.

PULL-UP – Begin with the hands shoulder width apart on the bar, thumbs wrapped around the bar, arms and body straight. Lift yourself up, squeezing your lats until either the chin is above the bar or the chest touches the bar. Lower yourself back down until the arms are straight again. • 2 tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil • 2 fat leeks (white and pale parts only), coarsely chopped and washed (2 cups) • 1/2 medium onion, chopped • 2 cloves garlic, chopped • 8 ounces baby spinach, coarsely chopped • salt and freshly ground pepper • 1 15 -ounce container of ricotta cheese • 3 large eggs • 1 sheet of frozen puff pastry, already thawed in the refrigerator • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves

n a large pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the leeks and onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until wilted, 5 minutes. Add the garlic, stir and cook until fragrant, 1 minute. Add the spinach and cook until wilted and tender, 2 minutes. Remove from heat, taste and season with salt and pepper as needed; let cool. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, whisk the ricotta, 2 eggs, thyme and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Fold the cooled vegetable mixture and the olives into the ricotta mixture. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pastry until it is 12 inches square. Using a 12-inch plate or just eyeballing it, cut the dough into a circle. Transfer the dough to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Spoon the tart filling into the center, leaving a 2-inch border of pastry. Lift the pastry edges and fold over the filling, creasing the dough as needed and leaving the filling exposed in the middle. In a small bowl, whisk the remaining egg with 1 tablespoon water and brush a thin layer of the egg wash on the exposed pastry, taking care not to let egg run down the sides to the pan. Bake until the pastry is golden brown, about 45 minutes. Remove from the oven and let rest 10 minutes before serving. You are a chef!

crunchy punch. We were filling up pretty fast, so last but not least, we ordered the Princess. This roll was very traditional but the freshness of the ingredients alone made it a personal favorite, with spicy tuna, scallions and cucumber topped with a tempura crisp. As we were ordering (and eating), we noticed we were already picking out our rolls for next time: the French Kiss--tuna and french green beans with brie cheese, the S & M-salmon, mango, mesculin greens, lemon zest, ponzu sauce, and the Crunch n’ Munch--lettuce, avocado, ginger, cucumber and tempura crisp served with ginger dressing. If you’re feeling adventurous, go for the Yellowtail Fever, which includes yellowtail, bokchoy, radish, and crushed wasabi peas. n Japan, “sozo” is a word used to describe the art of creation and imagination. As such, it’s only fitting that the Sozo Sushi Bar in Wilton Manors would offer a fusion of traditional dishes with a Big Apple Flair. The family owners ran the acclaimed Restaurant Sekku over 20 years ago (in New York), so they know the formula for success: fresh, authentic ingredients. Sozo is a sushi bar, so if you’re looking for teriyaki chicken or a rice bowl, head elsewhere. The menu contains a little under 20 rolls, so you’ll definitely need to come back to try some of the sushi you didn’t get a chance to order the first go around. Almost all of the sushi rolls go for $11-$14. We started with both Edamame and The Wilton, which was a very fresh and rich roll made of salmon, avocado, cucumber and cream cheese topped with tempura flakes. Next, we ordered the New Yorker-spicy tuna, scallion, avocado, ginger and radish wrapped in a cucumber. This was a light roll that packed a rich,

“M

alignant” would have been a better title for “Maleficent” (Disney), a movie that belongs in the same Disney trash heap as 2013’s “Oz The Great and Powerful,” 2010’s “Alice In Wonderland” and 1993’s “Hocus Pocus.” From its derivative and clichéd story with far too many liberties taken, to its tired special effects (haven’t we seen these mythical creatures somewhere before?), “Maleficent” raises a frightening question. Is there not an original idea in the heads of the zombies at Disney? With the intention to tell an “old story anew” (because who would actually want to see a new story told anew?), “Maleficent” begins with the discord between two kingdoms, lazily described through narration. One kingdom is occupied by humans who want nothing more than to add to their empire. The other kingdom is bursting at the seams with peaceful and magical creatures basking in the glories of nature. As a young girl, the winged and horned Maleficent encounters her first human, Stephan, and an unlikely friendship develops. As they grow older, Maleficent (Angelina Jolie, born, I say, born to play this part) remains true to her spirit, while Stephan (a miserably miscast Sharlto Copley) goes the way of many humans (take your pick from bad, wrong, greedy or evil). When an embarrassed and dying king (whose attempt to invade the moors was halted by Maleficent) offers his kingdom to whomever can slaughter the fairy and avenge his crown, Stephan uses his established relationship with Maleficent to trick her, drug her and then clip her wings. With Maleficent’s wings in hand, Stephan ascends to the throne. Meanwhile, Maleficent convalesces in agony. When King Stephan and his wife have a baby--a girl named Aurora--Maleficent gets her revenge by cursing the baby. On her 16th birthday, Aurora will prick her finger

on a spinning wheel’s needle and fall into an endless sleep, thus becoming Sleeping Beauty. Wouldn’t this be a good place to put an unlikely and unexpected friendship? That’s what develops between Maleficent, who has been keeping a watchful eye on the future princess, and the teenage Aurora (Elle Fanning), who mistakenly thinks that Maleficent is her fairy godmother (cute, huh?). The introduction of the very handsome Prince Phillip (Brenton Thwaites), turns out to be a red herring. The true Angelina Jolie in “Maleficent” love’s kiss that awakens Aurora from the sleep of her irrevocable curse comes from the most unpredictable place (yeah, right!). First-time director Robert Stromberg probably hoped that “Maleficent,” a malfunctioning reimagining of a classic character’s beginnings, would have the same appeal as say, the stage musical “Wicked.” The closest it comes is to that is that it’s wicked awful.

ike its main character, the gay high school comedy “Date and Switch” (Lionsgate) could go either way. Best friends since grade school, high school seniors Matty (the Seth Rogen-ish Hunter Cope) and Michael (Nicholas Braun) are determined to lose their virginity before their prom. A baking pan of pot brownies, meant to celebrate such an event, hangs in the balance. There are complications, of course. Michael has broken it off with longtime girlfriend Ava (“Modern Family”’s Sarah Hyland), which he will later find out was not such a bad thing after all. Matty has broken it off with longtime girlfriend Em (Dakota Johnson) and in the process came out to her as gay. Shortly thereafter Matty also comes out to Michael.

There is awkwardness. But Michael more than rises to the occasion, escorting Matty to his first gay bar, where they run into their Principal, Mr. Vernon (Larry Wilmore), and one of their teachers. Aside of underage drinking (a recurring motif), this is also the scene in which they meet Greg (Zach Cregger) in the parking lot of the bar, following a fender bender. Greg is significant because he will become Matty’s first boyfriend. Meanwhile, Michael appears to be the one having the hardest time. He is depressed and confused and generally badly behaved. An outing scene involving Matty’s parents Dwayne (Gary Cole) and Patricia (Megan Mullally, who has gone from playing the best friend of gay guys to the mom of gay teens. All of this is occurring as the date of the prom rapidly approaches. “Date and Switch” redeems itself on a few occasions, and it’s not as insufferable as say Geography Club. Still, it’s not unreasonable to wonder if movies such as this might give audience members, gay and straight, teen and older, the wrong impression of what coming out is about (see the underage drinking). Special features on the Blu-ray+Digital HD include director Chris Nelson and writer Alan Yang’s audio commentary, a couple of featurettes and deleted scenes.

on-Stop” (Universal) is an ugly movie. The high-flying tale of an “air marshal turned terrorist” out to clear his name and get the passengers on a London-bound flight to safety is propelled by a series of phobias. Billy (Liam Neeson whose acting chops haven’t improved after all these years), an air marshal who drinks (uh-oh!) and smokes (yuck!) and is mourning the loss of his daughter. Oh, and he doesn’t like

takeoffs. Gee, seems like that would be a hazard of his trade. Luckily he has a green “security” ribbon, given to him by his late daughter, to get him through it. Shortly after the flight takes off and Billy’s row-mate Jen (Julianne Moore--what’s she doing on this flight?) is asleep, he gets a threatening text on his secured phone line. Here’s the deal: unless $150 million is wired to a bank account, a passenger on the flight will die within 20 minutes. The twist and it’s a big one: it will be Billy who kills the passenger but he doesn’t know that (but now you do). As passengers (and a pilot) die in a variety of bizarre ways (broken neck, poisoning, etc.), the hunt for the hijacker intensifies. But given Billy’s track record, and that the hijacker knows an unexplained amount of facts about him, and arranged it so that Billy’s name is on the bank account to which the ransom is being transferred, everyone is a suspect. Oh, and then Billy finds the bomb in a briefcase with cocaine (don’t ask!). By the time the identity of the hijackers are, you will probably have lost count of the number of insults written into the screenplay. Let’s see, there’s homophobic NYPD officer Reilly (Corey Stoll), who would have been right at home raiding bars in pre-Stonewall Manhattan. He’s on the flight because his “fairy brother is getting married to a guy with an English accent.” Nice! There’s also blatant Muslim-phobia in the treatment of and attitude towards good Dr. Nasir (Omar Netwally). Do we even have to talk about the phobia against people struggling with addiction? For the record, that’s Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o as flight attendant Gwen. That said, you’d be wise to stop yourself from watching “Non-Stop.” The Blu-ray/DVD/ Digital HD set features “HD Picture and Theater Quality Sound” along with bonus features including the director and cast talking about the action sequences and a behind the scenes featurette.

MONUMENTAL ACHIEVEMENTS

n a recent column, we mentioned Chicago’s Legacy walk, the world’s only outdoor walking museum dedicated to LGBT history. And, of course we have the World AIDS Museum, The Stonewall Museum and Archives and its Wilton Drive Gallery right here in Fort Lauderdale/Wilton Manors. In honor of Pride Month, here’s list of other U.S. landmarks dedicated to the LGBT community. To paraphrase the sound of music, “Let’s start at the very beginning…” The Stonewall, 53 Christopher Street in Greenwich Village, New York City, is widely regarded as the birthplace of the modern LGBT rights movement. Housed in a former stable, The Stonewall opened in 1967 and was one of the largest gay bars in New York. As with most gay clubs at the time, police raids were common. On June 28, 1969 some of the patrons, tired of the harassment, fought back against police, starting what came to be known as the Stonewall Riots. The bar closed shortly after the riots and over the next 20 years was occupied by a bagel shop, a Chinese restaurant, and a shoe store, among other businesses. In the early 1990s the block of Christopher Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues was given the honorary name of “Stonewall Place” by the Borough of Manhattan and, in June 1999, the area, including Stonewall, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its historic significance to LGBT history. The building was renovated and reopened as the Stonewall Inn in March 2007 and remains a popular gay bar for tourists and locals alike. Across the street from The Stonewall Inn is what may be the United States’ first LGBT monument. A decade after the Stonewall Riots, Peter Putnam, a wealthy arts patron, commissioned the Gay Liberation monument. Titled “Gay Liberation,” the sculpture in Christopher Park by artist (not the actor) George Segal honors the struggle for LGBT rights. Though Segal was not the first artist approached, he accepted

The Stonewall… is widely regarded as the birthplace of the modern LGBT rights movement. the commission, which stipulated only that the work “had to be loving and caring, and show the affection that is the hallmark of gay people . . . and it had to have equal

representation of men and women.” Another rallying point for the LGBT community was the assassination of Harvey Milk, a San Francisco Supervisor and the unofficial “Mayor of Castro Street.” Although riots followed his murder, his legacy is fitting for a man who tried to bring different factions together. The City of San Francisco has paid tribute to Milk by naming several locations after him. An elementary school is named for him and at the corner of Market and Castro Streets, an enormous gay pride flag flies over Harvey Milk Plaza. Other cities have honored Milk as well. Two blocks in San Diego’s Hillcrest district have officially been renamed Harvey Milk Street. In New York City, Harvey Milk High School is available for at-risk youth addressing the needs of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender students.

Not far from Harvey Milk Plaza, Pink Triangle Park, the first permanent, freestanding memorial in America to the thousands of persecuted homosexuals in Nazi Germany during the Holocaust. Fifteen triangular granite columns surround a pink-quartz-filled triangle in the center of the park. Since we started this column with a reference to a musical, it’s fitting we end with another. Although not particularly directed to the LGBT community, we can’t overlook “The Wizard of Oz” rainbow at Sony Studios in Southern California. The rainbow arches over the trees and rooftops of the studios where “The Wizard of Oz” was filmed. Next week: We take a look at LGBT monuments around the globe.
