Two “Stonewalls” Team Up to Bring Historic Exhibit to Festival/Parade By BOB KECSKEMETY

WILTON MANORS, FL – The Stonewall National Museum and Archives has teamed up with this year’s Stonewall Street Festival and Parade to be held on Sunday, June 19 on Wilton Drive in a joint program to help educate the community of the meaning of “Stonewall” and its relevance to the gay community and LGBT history. The Stonewall Street Festival

and Parade was founded in 1999 by a small group of people when the annual Pridefest had been moved from the traditional gay pride month of June to March. The festival founders wanted to commemorate the month of June and also wanted to bring the true meaning of gay pride back to the festival and thus named the festival after the founding of what is considered ‘STONEWALL’ continues on Page 6

WILTON MANORS, FL – Last month, Paul O’Connell took over the duties of Chief of Police for the City of Wilton Manors. O’Connell replaces interim Police Chief Sharon Anderson, who replaced Chief Richard Perez who resigned last October. Perez, who was hired as Chief of Police for Wilton Manors in 2006, was suspended by City Manager Joe Gallegos for 30 days without pay after being accused of sending what appeared to be chain emails containing derogatory comments about blacks, the homeless and President Barack Obama from his office computer. Perez resigned from the police force just days after beginning his suspension. Chief Sharon Anderson, former Assistant Chief of Support for the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, agreed to come out of retirement and work with the City of Wilton Manor as interim Chief

until a permanent replacement could be found. Anderson told the Florida Agenda at that time that she had no interest in becoming the permanent Chief of Police for Wilton Manors. O’Connell started with the Pompano Beach Police Department in 1978 after graduating from Northeastern University in Boston. In 1999, the Pompano Beach Police Department merged with the Broward Sheriff ’s Office. In BSO, O’Connell worked in the Strategic Investigations Division, Organized Crime and with Internet Crimes Against Children. “Of all the work I’ve done,” said O’Connell, “the Internet Crimes Against Children was the most rewarding.” Then, for 18 months, he worked as watch commander for BSO in Oakland Park. In 2004, the BSO merged with the Police ‘POLICE CHIEF’ continues on Page 5

Department in Parkland where O’Connell was transferred and became Executive Officer and later promoted to District Chief until he came to Wilton Manors in April 2011. O’Connell also has a Masters Degree in public administration from Saint Thomas University and a law degree from Nova Southeastern University. He passed the Florida Bar in 1992. “I was looking for a new challenge,” said O’Connell when asked why he decided to apply for Wilton Manors Police Chief. “The things I’ve accomplished at BSO, which I’m very proud of, had the lowest crime rate in Broward County three years in a row 2008 through 2010. I want to bring those skills to a department that really needs some help.” O’Connell is well aware of some of the problems inside the Wilton Manors Police Department in the past and says that his goal is to “captain the ship and send it in the right direction.” “When I transitioned with Chief Anderson,” said O’Connell, “the one thing she emphasized more than anything else is that this department has a great relationship with the community. The Wilton Manors community loves its police department and I found that to be refreshing. Everything I’ve seen since April 18th forward seems to support that.” O’Connell has already been to several homeowner association meetings, meetings of the Dolphin Democrats and a meeting of the Wilton Manors Business Association. “Back in Parkland,” said O’Connell, “I went to about a dozen civic association meetings every month. Trying to maintain a bridge between the police and the community is of critical importance to me.” O’Connell says that the challenge is to take a very small department and properly utilize the staff to tackle the problems. The department currently has 35 police

officers and O’Connell is looking to fill two vacancies. The city has also received a grant for a community police officer whose job will be to monitor the activities on Wilton Drive. O’Connell is pleased that, compared with 2009/2010, day-to-day crime in Wilton Manors is down by 15%; but if you compare the population of Wilton Manors to other cities in Broward County, he admits there is still more work to be done. He said the majority have to do with property crimes, car and residential burglaries. “In such a small geographical area such as Wilton Manors,” said O’Connell, “it’s really hard to pinpoint any type of pattern. In March and April, we had a significant number of car burglaries in the northwest section. Three arrests were made and the burglaries subsided. When we see a trend like that, we target the trend and develop and operation plan and it worked.” O’Connell likes and appreciates the diversity of Wilton Manors. “I think what impressed me most when I came here is how tolerant that rank and file is in the police department to the lifestyle which is Wilton Manors. They understand that it’s different and it’s us that has to adjust.” O’Connell said that part of the flexibility he has given the officers is to try to accommodate the Wilton Manors lifestyle. He admits that pedestrian jaywalking is a problem but, because Wilton Drive is so small and it’s such an intense entertainment district, it is probably more noticeable than it is in downtown Fort Lauderdale. He said he could have his officers really crack down on the jaywalkers, but he feels it would have more of a negative impact. “You always try to balance education with enforcement and I know the officers are out there engaging with these folks and trying to educate them. We’re trying to use a carrot instead of stick.” H

the birthplace of the modern gay pride movement, the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, New York. The first Stonewall Festival was held in June 2000. The Stonewall National Museum and Archives, located on Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, was founded in 1973 and has grown into the largest library of its kind in the United States. The library has over 18,000 books and audio-visual materials and documents a century of LGBT cultural and social history with an emphasis on the southeastern United States. The Stonewall Museum has numerous traveling exhibits that are on display throughout the country. Though the close proximity of both the location and the names of the two organizations, this is the first time the two organizations have teamed together to present an exhibit. “They [the festival organizers] contacted me right after I started here after the first of April,” said Bryan Knicely, president of the Stonewall National Museum and Archives. “They came to me with the idea that we should partner together on this as community partners.” “The parade and festival is one to celebrate the history of what happened at the Stonewall Inn in New York and that’s how we got our name,” continued Knicely. “We [the Stonewall Museum] is here preserving LGBT history. For the last 37 years that’s been our focus, to preserve all that history. For us it was a natural fit. And it [the Stonewall Street Festival and Parade] is the only gay pride in the country that’s named after the actual Stonewall event. The Stonewall riots, which took place June 27, 1969, is often considered the defining moment of the modern gay rights movement. At that time, a routine police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a Christopher Street in Greenwich Village hangout for gays run by the Mafia. It was not unusual for police to raid gay bars and regularly did so to arrest transvestites and harass customers. Generally, angry customers cowered to police and left. What made this particular raid so unusual was that this particular evening, gay and lesbian patrons fought back tossing beer cans, bricks and anything else they could get their hands on at the police officers. Police responded by beating the protesters and arresting dozens of others. Word of the first protests that first night spread throughout the gay community and for the next two nights, the protests continued, each night becoming larger than the night before. By the end of the decade, marches were held in Washington D.C. on behalf of civil rights for blacks, protests against the Vietnam war and gay pride was born. Since 1970, the Stonewall riots have been celebrated with an annual gay pride march down Fifth Avenue and Christopher Street in New York and gay pride celebrations have spread worldwide. The Stonewall National Museum and Archives exhibit will be on the corner of Wilton Drive and N.E. 21 Court at the Gables Wilton Park complex for a week leading up to the June 19 festival and parade. The event is free and open to the public. H

Gay Office Politics… Double Standards? I was out to dinner with a couple of people last week and one of them mentioned he had just started a new job he said though he was enjoying it he was having a hard time dealing with the differences he was experiencing working in a gay workplace versus his previous job in a straight atmosphere. I started making my own comparisons and began to realise there is a huge gap in the rules of conduct within gay environments versus straight offices. In fact so much that happens in gay workplaces would never be even remotely acceptable in straight offices, to the point of potential legal action! If you search ‘Gay Workplace’ on Google you will find a phenomenal amount of resources against discrimination for sexuality, stories of people being fired for their sexuality and so on. You won’t find much on what happens within all gay or predominantly gay workplaces. I did some more research by asking people about where they worked and what it was like. First off the top ‘complaint’ (said with a wink and a smile) was the blatant and oft times amusing sexual banter. It’s usually harmless, meant in jest and fun but where is the benchmark for what is too far? Sure if a colleague makes an unwanted move on you there is a line. But prior to that where can you say no and make it clear the joke is over?

Alex Vaughn

environment it can be a huge culture shock. Can you imagine the outcry if a man spoke to a woman that way in an office? There would be a lawsuit quicker than you could say ‘tight jeans’. Furthermore the kind of basis of the majority of sexual harassment cases is innuendo, ‘not what he said, but the way he said it’ this is just as prevalent in the gay community if not more so. A tone can change a simple ‘you look good’ into ‘you look good’. The right placed wink and a smile makes that a form of sexual harassment particularly if accompanied with ‘elevator eyes’ (you know when someone looks you up and down slowly and purposefully). Tie this in with it being said by someone more senior and a perceived lack of comfort… you are on your way to court, well you Photo courtesy, defyingthestereotypes.blogspot.com would be in a straight Cat calling, wolf whistling and office. In addition the constant evaluation comments on how a guy or girl looks that of people in and around the workplace, particular day, comments about their could easily be seen as leering and make position sexually, sexual innuendo not people extremely uncomfortable. When you look at this way I am sure only about how they look, but how they walk, talk and act. All of this is more many of you can admit that at one time or than common place in a gay environ- other you may have taken it too far. But ment, almost de rigour. The level of how far is too far within the work place acceptance is, however almost total and and really what recall is there? Letters to the Editor DEAR EDITOR, I wanted to personally thank Michael French for his fine article regarding Military Service which appeared in the May 19th issue of the Agenda. Time often erases the memory and historical meaning of what it means and meant to have served honorably in the U.S. Military regardless of the DADT

complained that your manager made comments about how hot you were? Surely he is just paying you a compliment, ‘why make such a big deal, you aren’t that special after all!’ would be what you would expect to hear if you complained. Or that the secretary winks at you too much, or that the guy who sits next to you can’t stop talking about how tight your jeans are. ‘You were asking for it wearing such tight jeans’. When you look at it in these terms, it sounds frighteningly like lines you would be disgusted to hear, almost that line of argument that says ‘maybe, but you brought it on yourself’. Then there are those blurred boundaries. Sure telling someone all about your weekend over the coffee break is one thing but how much do you really need to know about the sexploits of your colleagues. This is akin to straight men discussing their conquests; it would, could and does make other workers very uncomfortable. Again, what could you say without running the risk of being mocked and laughed at? So why does this happen? Well I think for one thing there is almost camaraderie in the gay work place. There is a freedom that is taken too far. The freedom of both expression and sexuality blur the lines of where the right place and time to discuss your dirty laundry. Work probably isn’t it! There is also a school of thought that believes all the innuendo, bitching and name calling are never done in a malicious way so only prudes or the oversensitive have issues with it. In some cases this is probably true, but the same could be said of the secretary who doesn’t like it when her boss says she’s got a nice tight skirt on. It simply wouldn’t be tolerated, whether she was being a prude, oversensitive, or if she had purposefully worn the shortest tightest skirt she could find. Amusingly rights are that which we are quickest to defend, surely a person has a right to be in their workplace and feel comfortable no matter where they work or the sexuality of their co-workers. Surely it is a right to be able to go to work and not feel like you are being leered at or made fun of or sexually harassed? Of course it is, but who would say so, would you? Or shall we just leave it to Prudence McPrude of Prudy Town? H

Who Knew? Toxic Relationships: Bug Chasers and Gift Givers Most of us spend our lives avoiding contracting even the slightest germ, much less an infective virus. We live in a world of hand sanitizer stations at shopping centers and medicine cabinets filled with multi-vitamins and some sort of natural tea product. So, it may be unimaginable that there are individuals intentionally seeking out diseases, hoping they will be lucky enough to get bitten by “the bug”. They are called bug chasers. This term usually refers to a sub-culture of gay men that intentionally seek to get infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), the virus that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). It is still not understood what motivates these individuals, but many theorize it may be the desire for a sense of belonging. Bug chasers may long to be part of a nurturing and compassionate part of a community, as found within the HIV+ population. Others conclude some people feel so overwhelmed by the possibility of contracting HIV, they prefer to “get it over with.” The short film The Gift explores this rare phenomenon, documenting a young man’s sense of

relief after being diagnosed HIV+. The Gift’s director, Louise Hogarth, adds the increasing false sense of the lack severity in contracting the virus may also be a contributing factor. Some believe the disease has become more of a manageable illness, controllable with just a pill. This school of thought has encouraged individuals to let down their guard, being less disciplined in their safe sex practices. This fringe population of bug chasers is accommodated by “gift givers.” These are individuals that are willing to infect bug chasers. This pairing of bug chasers and gift givers usually comes together online. Though the compilation of these two groups is a very small subset of the population, they have developed a culture of their own, including “conversion parties.” This is one means by which HIV+ men and those looking to be infected can meet. Usually only one individual is HIV+ (known only to the individual himself and the host); the other members of the party participate in unprotected sex in hopes of being infected, commonly referred to as getting “pozzed up”.

By sam knew, msw The question of these individual’s mental health and legal responsibility are just beginning to be examined. There is still little research or actual statistics on how many people are purposefully seeking sero-conversion, and less on people who have sero-converted intentionally. Additionally, nearly half the states have laws against infecting individuals, but even most of those laws are not prepared to address the consensual transmission of HIV. H

Poverello Food Bank Moves Thrift Store to Follow

By BRaD CaseY

The Poverello Food bank has officially moved to its new location on North Dixie Highway in Wilton Manors. The new location is a 22,000 square foot building that will also house the popular thrift store which will make its move in about two weeks. Poverello purchased the building, a former furniture manufacturing warehouse, in 2008 for $1.5 million. The nonprofit organization made a down payment of $750,000 and has a $750,000 mortgage. The food bank is spacious with new refrigeration. Marketing and fund raising director Dale Madison says of the building, “the place is absolutely beautiful. The contractor has done a beautiful job in creating the environment. When our clients come in they will see a bright and modern facility. It will make them feel good.” Terry Summerville, food bank manager, says the building is incredible. “It’s a state-of-the-art energy saving building. Clients have been overwhelmingly impressed”. Summerville has been food manager for two and a half years.

It took about a week for the move and not a client missed a meal. “We closed down on a Friday and reopened the next Monday,” said Summerville The new building will house the food bank, thrift store and executive offices. The food bank will be in back of the building; the thrift store will be in front. Last year, the food bank served over 1,000,000 meals to about 2600 clients. The thrift store generates the funds to pay expenses of the organization and donations go to purchase food for its clients. The move has been in the making for three years. Madison says, “With the move, the goal is to increase thrift store sales to be able to negotiate better prices with our food vendors.” The new Poverello Food Bank is located at 2056 North Dixie Highway, Wilton Manors, right next door to the Equality Center and two blocks South of Five Points in Wilton Manors. The Poverello Center will have a grand opening sometime in July. Stay tuned to the Florida Agenda for more information on this upcoming event. H

The gay men's responses were compared to data from men in the general population collected in previous published research. “This is one of the early studies demonstrating that quality of life is more significantly impacted by prostate cancer in the gay population,” Dr. Tomas L. Griebling, an AUA spokesman, said in a press release. “More research is needed to determine what steps we can take to diminish these impacts.” The research presented is considered preliminary until it is published in a peer-reviewed journal.H

Are Travel Agents Still Relevant? The Answer is a Resounding YES!!! By PaUL sTaLBaUm First, let me state that if you simply want to buy an airline ticket or stay in a gay B&B, you may not need the services of a travel agent. Gay travel agents, however, have been one of the cornerstone small businesses in many gay neighborhoods. We depend on the sales of travel to earn our income. We provide specialized and personalized service not often found otherwise. Travel agents are important because we act as your advocate and offer objective advice about destinations, hotels, cruise lines and tour operators. I often hear the question, “Why should I book with a travel agent when I can book online or direct?” The answers really are quite simple. I will break this down into three basic components – personalized attention, unbiased information and ongoing relationships. PERSONALIZED ATTENTION: A good travel agent will take the time to get to know you on a personal level. We try very hard to match you up with the best destination, hotel or cruise to satisfy your own personal interests. While websites make everything sound glamorous and charming, I too often hear someone say that the “dreamy” hotel they booked online turned out to be a nightmare.

“Charming” turned out to be tiny rooms, no elevator or off the beaten track. Do you think that the people at Travelocity or Expedia really care about you? How many times do you see horror stories in newspapers about online booking engines like Travelocity? It is very commonplace. UNBIASED INFORMATION: RSVP and Atlantis are fantastic travel options for the right client, but I never understand why one would prefer to book directly rather than go through a local travel agent. The same applies to regular cruises. When you book direct, that company only has the one product to sell, whether it’s Atlantis or Princess or any other company. Travel agents will offer an impartial critique of the product and possibly offer alternatives. We know where not to place you on a ship or what location in a city or resort may be best for you. One myth that needs to be dispelled is that you pay more by booking through a travel agency or get a better deal by booking direct. So not true. We derive our income from a commissions paid by the supplier. So that $1500 balcony on RSVP is still $1500 through a travel agency. Similarly, if it is a non-gay trip

or cruise, the rate remains the same if booked with a local travel agency. Reserving through your local travel agency does not cost you any more for tours and cruises. In fact, many agencies have blocked group rates on several cruise line sailings which could actually offer you lower rates and some onboard perks. ONGOING RELATIONSHIPS: Our first allegiance is to the client. After all, we want to please you so that you will keep coming back to us for your other vacations and refer your friends and family to us. The best form of advertising is by word of mouth. If you are happy with our recommendations and service, more than likely we will see you and your friends again. I/we pride ourselves on trying to paint a vivid picture of what to expect from a city, hotel or cruise line. The more informed you are, the less surprises along the way. This kind of service does not exist on impersonal websites or by booking direct. Besides, isn’t it somewhat important to support your local gay businesses? Most of us use a gay Realtor®, a gay lawyer and support gay merchants, so why not try to keep your travel dollars local, too?

In an era where personalized service is disappearing, and in an economy that has seen many gay owned businesses close, your gay travel agent is a throw back to times past. Think about it: If you value your time, if you value getting the best possible service, then you will want to use the services of a travel agent. So, on behalf of me and all other gay travel agents in South Florida, we look forward to being of service and make your vacations memorable and special. We thank you for your support. H

The Short Story on Short Sales By RICK GIBSON “If we all did the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.”– Thomas Edison This quote may be an unusual introduction to short sales, but it’s fitting. Many people do not understand them, are afraid to admit it and avoid what they don’t understand. By acknowledging you are not alone if you do not understand short sales, and that you are not “supposed” to understand them, is the first step. Then, see that short sales may be a great option for you, and not something to avoid or fear. A property being “sold short” means it is being sold for less than the seller owes to their lender. So, when sold, there will be a “shortage”. Lenders prefer short sales over foreclosures since they lose less money and it can help decrease vacant properties. The lender is the real decision maker, even though it is the seller who hires the Realtor®, signs the listing and the sales contract. The seller cannot make any profit, though in some cases is given moving expenses as an incentive to keep them from abandoning the property, or taking the fixtures and appliances. Fundamental to accounting, but a mystery to some, is that “losses must be offset by a gain,” so you may hear lenders send an income statement to sellers for the amount the lender loses when they approve a short sale (the difference between what it sold for and what was owed). You may have also heard the seller is then responsible to pay taxes on that “income,” even though the seller did not make any money. Hearing things like that and not understanding them causes people to postpone taking action and regretting it later. Consult an accountant to confirm that, for a limited time, you are able to waive liability for taxes on this “income”. If you are in debt and need to get out of a property, now is an opportunity to start over. If you are not in debt, but

@

have property that is harming you due to its value, you may be a candidate for “strategic default” and should consult an expert quickly. I strongly suggest if you are a seller and are considering your options, meet only with a Realtor® who is a Certified Distressed Property Expert (CDPE). This means the Realtor® has specialized training, and you are more likely to understand your options, minimize stress and find success. Some Realtors® negotiate their short sale contracts themselves; others hire a firm that represents them and the seller in lender interactions. Personally, I recommend and hire experts to negotiate with banks to cover this critical task, and stay focused on obtaining contracts and managing the process. I would similarly not be my own dentist or lawyer. Buying short sales is a risky if you are looking for a primary home, unless you are okay if it does not succeed. The process can take a while, and has its problems. For my clients, I generally recommend short sales to investors more than to my buyers who are emotionally involved or relatively impatient. It can be slow, but this is changing quickly and for the better. Lenders are receiving criticism and new guidelines to speed up the process, and the market is in a clear trend towards more short sales and less foreclosures. Regardless of whether you are a buyer, seller or are considering buying or selling, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Short sales are here to stay and may be a tremendous opportunity to get out of debt at a time when there are few down-sides. Now is a time of change and opportunity and, as Thomas Edison expressed so well, we are capable of many things. Learning about our options now and taking action can greatly enhance our lives.H

A Beginner's Guide to Orlando Gay Days Is this your first year at Orlando's Gay Days festival? If it is, you're in for a fabulous journey, but you're going to need a road map to navigate your way through this wonderland of gay vacation delights. The Beginner's Guide includes information for both men and women coming to Gay Days. It is also a great resource even if you are a regular attendee since Gay Days grows each year. Some people come to Orlando during Gay Days just to enjoy the company of 150,000+ other gays and lesbians, but most are looking to fill their itineraries with fun, fun, fun! Be sure to check a complete Calendar of Events on www.gaydays.com since only the highlights are represented here. This guide describes the major categories of events, tell you how to get tickets, and give you some ideas about transportation.

Theme Park Visits The Gay Days festival started with a theme park visit, and theme park visits remain one of the most popular Gay Days activities. Always the first Saturday in June, Gay Day in the Magic Kingdom (at Walt Disney World) is still the signature event of the week. An estimated 50,000 red-shirted Gay Days attendees pack Walt Disney World's original park on that 1st Saturday in June. The 3 o'clock parade down Main Street always draws an unforgettable "sea of red" that can be seen from one end of the park to the other. Many Gay Days vacationers also like to plan some time to visit Disney's other parks (Animal Kingdom, Epcot, and Disney's Hollywood Studios). • Theme park tickets will be available on www.gaydays.com • Multi-day tickets are often a great idea if you plan on visiting more than one park, or visiting all the Disney parks during your stay. • None of the "gay days" are official park events and no special tickets are required.

Disney Theme Parks • For theme park transportation, www.gaydays.com is again offering a Host Hotel (an all-gay resort experience!) at the Gay Days Host Hotel with free transportation to Disney and other attractions. • If you are staying in another area of town, check with your hotel about scheduled transportation to theme parks. • Catch a cab, during Gay Days; they are plentiful, and there are plenty of people to share with if you stay at one of the host or co-host hotels. • Downtown Orlando and area night clubs – These are located about 10 miles from the tourist area. Shuttle or taxi transportation can be arranged from any attraction-area hotel. Check with the guest services desk.

Big, Big Events Although it all began with a daytime trip to Disney World, Gay Days has inspired and nurtured some of the largest and most incredible events & parties in the world. With some of the most imaginative and innovative venues found anywhere, Orlando's Gay Days has an unbeatable combination of attractions, events, and parties to help create a magical dream of a vacation week. From the tropical wonderland of the Gay Days Host Hotel, to the thrill rides of The Magic Kingdom, you're sure to find an event that will amaze and delight you. • Tickets to attractions, plays, pool parties, and dance parties are available in advance online from www.gaydays.com Ticket Booth. Many of these are available exclusively at www.gaydays.com and sales are already brisk. • During the event, www.gaydays.com will operate a Ticket and Merchandise Center at the Gay Days Host Hotel. Be forewarned however, events may sell out in advance! • Cash and credit cards are accepted at the Gay Days Ticket and Merchandise Center during the week at the Gay Days Host Hotel. • Designated days at attractions held at WDW venues: Disney's parks are easily accessed by cab or hotel shuttle. Be sure to check shuttle times as the park hours might be outside regular shuttle hours. • Also consider renting a car, but be sure to have a designated driver if you plan on drinking. We want everyone to have a safe Gay Days.

Hotel Events Pool Parties – Orlando is the perfect place to spend your days soaking up the hot sun and hot scenery around a sparkling hotel swimming pool. This low-stress treat gets even better when you're surrounded by hundreds of GUYS and GALS in Speedos and bikinis, sipping umbrella drinks and grooving to the sounds of some of the world's best known DJs! Pool parties will be held Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the Gay Days Host Hotel. Tickets are required for these pool events if you aren't registered through www.gaydays.com as a hotel guest. The Gay Days Expo –growing since it was first held in 1999 – will be bigger and better again this year at the Gay Days Host Hotel. This event is free and open to the public with a wide variety of vendors, food, fun, and the Gay Days Ticket and Merchandise Center. Details are available at www.gaydaysexpo.com. The Expo will be open from Thursday through Sunday. Everybody loves this one!

Now is the Time to Wear White! By ALEX VAUGHN & ERIC CHRISTIAN Like many customs past and present, the reason for not wearing white after Labor Day is hard to pinpoint. The rule originally was more ‘Only wear white shoes between Memorial Day and Labor Day’. It applied to white pumps or dress shoes. White tennis shoes and off-white boots seemed to have been exempt, as were any shoes worn by a winter bride. “Winter White” clothing (e.g., creamcolored wool) is acceptable between Labor Day and Memorial Day, too. The most logical reasoning for the rule that famously infuriated Kathleen Turner in Serial Mom was temperature. Image consultant Nancy Penn suggests that because white reflects light and heat, wearing white would make you cooler in winter, and thus should be avoided. But others suggest the rule stems from a class issue. Acting Director of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Valerie Steele, notes that in the late 19th century, and again in the 1950s, more people were entering the middle classes. These nouveau-riche folks were often unaware of the standards of high society, so they were given specific codified rules to follow in order to fit in. Another bit of folklore states, “Southern girls know bad manners when they see them,” and a clear

sign of bad manners is wearing white shoes before Easter or after Labor Day. Because fashions in the American South can be a little more formal than elsewhere, perhaps the no-white-shoes rule came from south of the Mason-Dixon Line. Even Star Jones (an otherwise fashion-forward Southern lady) admits that white shoes “are for Easter Sunday and not the dead of winter.” The rule has been said to have been maintained to ensure that people only wear summer fashions during the actual summer months. The opposite probably applies as well, but people generally don’t need to be reminded to avoid wearing a fur coat in 100-degree weather. As we live in an area with summer temperatures all year-round, there isn’t any harm in wearing white shoes or a head-to-toe white outfit in October. If you are a traditionalist, however, feast your eyes on these top white pieces and enjoy wearing them till Labor Day!H

The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne Turns 10... And You’re Invited! By PAUL RUBIO ne of my favorite hotels in the world is turning ten, and they’re throwing a month-long throwdown with a twist. Don’t bother bringing a gift to help The Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne (www.ritzcarlton.com/keybiscayne), celebrate her birthday in style; she’s inviting guests to this party via dozens of “ten” themed promotions as a generous “thank you” to all her fans. Ten-dollar room nights, ten-dollar spa treatments, ten diamond necklaces placed randomly under room pillows – this is no BS! For those of you who’ve yet to experience The Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne, take note: This resort is a self-contained world of perpetual indulgence, worldclass dining, eco-tourism opportunities, seclusion and exclusivity. In fact, the resort offers all the relaxation and vacation utopia of the Bahamas’ Atlantis or the Caribbean’s top resorts, while just a short distance from the madness of Miami. The lush tropical gardens, the ocean panoramas, tight bodies near the pool, fabulous poolside cocktails – it’s the South Florida experience we all crave. But the blend of serenity, comfort, superior service, exceptional dining and privacy is the true escapism and pampering we all need (and deserve). The 1.25 miles of natural beach surrounding Key Biscayne are consistently ranked in the top 10 of the coveted “Top Beach in the U.S” list compiled by Dr. Stephen Leatherman (aka, Dr. Beach). Plus, the property is surprisingly approachable and relaxed, peppered with Ritz elegance and the fabulous epicurean touches that make it Miami’s only AAA 5 diamond property. And, of paramount Amazing Gay Travel importance, it’s super gayfriendly, maintaining its gold GLBT standard among Ritz-Carlton hotels.

O

A room at the Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne

When the sun rises July 1, the celebration officially begins. Having the most intimate moments with the “birthday girl,” however, will require a little bit of pre-planning. On June 10th, the “10 Guestrooms, 10 Nights, $10” promo begins, offering ten luxurious resort view guestrooms for $10 each on July 5-7, 10-13, 18, 25 and 26. Set up your speed dial on 305-365-4582 for June 10th, 10 am to 2 pm EST. If you don’t land a hotel room, then take advantage of “$10 Spa Treatments” every Wednesday in July. Paying homage to the original spa menu, circa 2001, guests can book the two oldschool signature treatments: the Key Lime Body Treatment (50 minutes) or Deluxe Sundae Pedicure (45 minutes) for just $10 each (reservations required by phoning 305.365.4286). If you want to go all out, the eleven new tantalizing Babor body and face treatments will run you full price, but they’re well worth it! Foodies will rejoice over the countless eating extravaganzas planned. The hotel’s signature Italian restaurant, Cioppino, brings a piece of Tuscany to South Florida in the literal sense, with ingredients flown in twice weekly from Italy, including fresh cheese, spices, olive oils and aged balsamic vinegars. Under the tutelage of Italian Chef Ezio Gamba, Cioppino will roll out a limited-edition three-course menu July 10-15 and July 17-22 for just $10 (first come, first served by phoning 305.365.4286). Alternatively, you can enjoy the fairy tale bay front setting at Dune Oceanfront Burger Lounge on July 14th when the lounge offers $10 glasses of Moet & Chandon Ice Imperial Champagne and $10 Kobe Beef Sliders from 11:30 am until sunset (no reservations required). Dune’s barefoot luxe vibe stands reminiscent of Nikki Beach’s pre-Chonga heyday with white

couches nestled into the sand, oversized umbrellas, gentle zephrys and trendy cocktail lists (the white sangria is my personal favorite). For cocktails, 8pm onward and sophisticated Miami ambience, bartender extraordinaire, Anthony Buddle, will muddle signature Diamond Mojitos for just $10 each July 10-15 at the Rum Bar, while Group Nostalgia entertains the crowds with live Latin music. The “ten” madness doesn’t end there. The coastal Mexican restaurant, Cantina Beach, will host an oceanfront culinary party and unveil rare tequila bottled specially for this birthday celebration. Tons of other surprises are being planned as this article goes to press. See you at the birthday bash!!! H

Less IS More By MICHAEL FRENCH

Ever heard the phrase “Less is More?” Our obsessive pursuit of wealth isn't working - people are afraid and anxious; we're destroying the planet, undermining happiness, and clinging to an unsustainable economy. There's another way. Less can be More. Throughout history wise people have argued we need to live more simply - that only by limiting outer wealth can we have inner wealth. They bring us a new vision of Less: Less stuff, less work, less stress, less debt. A life with ‘Less’ becomes a life of ‘More’: More time, more satisfaction, more balance and more security. We need to build a culture of connection by challenging

the consumer society and recreating vibrant life in our local communities, the creation of a different experience of time where we live life in slower, more effective ways, savoring our lives and recapturing exuberance and laughter. When we have too much, we savor nothing. We become less appreciative and less grateful, engorged with a bloated sense of entitlement. Appreciative, grateful people are healthier and happier. When we choose less, we think and feel deeply. Ultimately, a life of less connects us with one true source of happiness: being part of a caring community. We learn how to turn individual change into a movement that leads to policy changes in government and corporate behavior, the wealth gap and sustainability. It is more accurate for our worth as a human being to be measured NOT by what we possess but how we behave. Baby Boomers nearing retirement, harried professionals with a social conscience, the one-time "middle class" and 20-30-somethings who are now facing the sobering realities of constricted choices are weighing what corporate America / Madison Avenue are relentlessly brainwashing and manipulating us to

Shortbread 123

Shortbread is a classic Scottish dessert that consists of three basic ingredients: flour, sugar and butter. This dessert resulted from a medieval biscuit bread, which was a twice-baked, enriched bread roll dusted with sugar and spices and hardened into a hard, dry, sweetened biscuit called a Rusk. Eventually, yeast from the original Rusk recipe was replaced by butter, which was becoming more of a staple in the British Isles. Despite the fact that shortbread was prepared during much of the 12th century, the refinement of shortbread was actually accredited to Mary, Queen of Scots, in the 16th century. The name of one of the most traditional forms of shortbread is “petticoat tails”; this type of shortbread was baked in a round tin and then cut into triangular wedges. Shortbread was expensive and reserved as a luxury for special occasions such as Christmas, Hogmanay (Scottish New Year’s Eve) and weddings. In Shetland, it is traditional to break a decorated shortbread cake over the head of a new bride on the entrance of her new house. • 1 cup brown sugar • 2 cups salted butter • 3 and more cups all-purpose flour

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Cream the butter and brown sugar. Add 3 cups of flour. Mix well. You can do this in a mixer if you like. Sprinkle board with more flour. Knead dough for a few minutes, adding enough flour to make soft dough. Roll to a 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into strips and place on ungreased baking sheets or plop into a pan and press flat, you are the chef. Prick with fork any which way you do it. Bake at 325 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes. Remember, you are the chef !H

believe we need versus what is truly imperative to have a rewarding life. Wabi-sabi, an ancient Japanese belief, is about appreciating the simple and letting go of the superficial – the perfect antidote for a society in recovery from a decade long consumerist orgy. How liberating it is to move past our belief in life, liberty and the pursuit of stuff to finding beauty in austerity, serenity and authenticity. Far more than home décor, wabi-sabi is a state of mind: living modestly in the moment, stripping away the unnecessary, finding satisfaction in everyday things. Wabi -sabi includes clearing clutter, integrating recycled material and taking time for self-reflection. Wabi-sabi is everything that today's sleek, plastic, technology-saturated culture isn't. Mass-produced perfection is seductive but boring. This belief is for anyone who is overwhelmed by consumerism. This is a tricky one; being content with less, since we are programmed with “no matter how much you have, you always need more.” Too many of us are enslaved by believing that contentment with what we have or who we are equals laziness. Do we truly want it all or are we manipulated to believe it? Don’t most of us actually have much more than we

realize or really need? When we need something, be it knowledge or material, it will come to us in some way or another, usually in unexpected ways. By slowing down and connecting with ourselves, we find our true needs. I have known people with serious illness or pain and all they want is health – to the point where they are ready to give everything away. That was very evident when I was my mother’s caregiver during her terminal illness. When we set needs against wants, we find that we need very little and this is when we start receiving what we need. Often when we receive, we are blind to the gift because we are looking for something else, and that which is given us is discarded. Look at things from a different angle; everything is a blessing – sometimes very well disguised. Things happen to us all the time, we just need to notice it and understand its significance … this happens when we slow down and allow ourselves to start watching and listening instead of constantly doing and talking. The idea of having any kind of control is an illusion. So sit back, my friends, and allow it to happen.H

Philanthropist & Entrepreneur By ALEX VAUGHN Tony Dee is a local philanthropist and successful entrepreneur. He has been working in the Wilton Manors area since 1990, and many say he can be credited with starting Wilton Manors. Agenda sat down with him to talk past, present and future! You have owned property in Wilton Manors for over two decades. What brought you to the area? My ex-business partner and I were looking for a gay night spot, and we found the Palms which we turned into Chardees for 17 years. Named after my business partner, Charlie Mielky, and myself, we took the ‘Char’ and the ‘Dee’ and made Chardees. How do you feel the area has changed over the last ten years? Better than 200 fold! When I came to Wilton manors in the summer of 1990, it was a depressed area, but then, slowly but surely, gay men and ladies purchased these run down homes, fixed them up and turned Wilton Manors into what it is today. What are the advantages to being in the area? I’d have to say comfort. Wilton Manors is predominantly gay, just about everyone knows each other. It’s comfortable and I am ecstatic to be part of it. What disadvantages do you see here?

One of the disadvantages are that many people are coming into the area to rent and don’t do their homework. They think that they just have to put up security, take a store with a few items right away and that they can just sit back and make a living. That just doesn’t happen, you need to know the area. How is The Schubert doing? How was the season? The Schubert is doing well; I had the best season in 3 years this past season. I give many thanks to all the gay resorts in the area that helped me get started in the first year when I turned the Schubert from straight to gay. I worked with the publications who made it clear, when all the other gay resorts were full, try the Schubert, they are new and that’s how I built my clientele. Do you enjoy owning the hotel? Do you have any plans to add more hotels to your portfolio? Yes, I do enjoy the hotel; I enjoy meeting people from around the world, their personalities fascinate me, but I do not have any plans for more hotels. There has been a lot of talk recently about landlords on and around the Drive raising rents. How do feel about this? It’s a two edged sword. The tenants don’t want to pay more because of the economy. Landlords have to increase

rents because taxes are so high. There will always be a clash there. What do you think landlords can do to help? We can hold back the increases, which I have done in the past to my renters who have got into trouble. There is only so much I can do, as it comes out of my pockets. I fight Broward County every year for all my shopping Photo courtesy, Pompano Bill centers to keep taxes where they Tony Dee is the Proprietor of The Schubert Resort in Victoria Park. Top 20 Sizzling Summer Fitness Facts Simple, Easy and to the Point “Summertime and the livin’ is easy…” so said Gershwin in that famous ballad, but nowhere is the season hotter and more eventful than in tropical South Florida. Remember this summer to relax, take some time for yourself, pack your sunscreen and a good book and ponder these fitness tidbits as you crank up your workouts. Here are my top 20 summer fitness facts, simple, easy and to the point! 1. A 10-15 minute warm-up consisting of light cardio and stretching before working out warms up your muscles and joints and prevents injuries. 2. A cocktail or glass of wine are a delight, but overdoing it can pack on the pounds, deplete your energy and prove fatal to your workouts. 3. Modalities like hydro-therapy, massage and acupuncture, etc., can aid your fitness lifestyle by relieving pain, speeding recovery and adding to your overall well-being. 4. A professional massage can relax sore tight muscles, lower blood pressure, increase circulation and moisturize your skin. 5. Summer colds are a bitch. Never work out with a fever – it’s counter-productive – stay home and get well. 6. Music can rev you up and motivate

your workouts – if your gym is playing tired tunes, then bring your own. 7. Carry a clean towel with you to the gym and a few antibacterial wipes so that you can keep equipment clean for yourself and others. 8. Stay hydrated throughout the day and during your workouts. Chug water regularly and don’t wait until you are thirsty. 9. Beginning at age 25, most people begin to lose about a half a pound of muscle per year. Regular and progressive weight training helps maintain and build lean muscle. 10. Consistency and regularity at the gym add up to success at achieving your goals. 11. To jump start your fat-burning, try 20 minutes of cardio (i.e., treadmill, elliptical) on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. But make sure to eat breakfast soon after and before your major workout. 12. Before trying any new supplement, make sure you research it and check with your physician before trying it. 13. Eat whole grains, fresh fruits and yogurt for a substantial breakfast that will energize you and keep you going throughout the day.

14. A workout partner can be a real asset provided you are both on the same page as far as fitness goals are concerned. 15. Good nutrition, weight training and cardio are the three elements of any sound program. 16. Do some core training at work by replacing your regular office chair with an exercise ball as you attend to the days chores. 17. Steer clear of 2 or 3 filling meals and eat 5 or 6 smaller meals more frequently throughout the day to stay lean and energized. Never eat before going to bed and make sure to eat a healthy breakfast

18. The warmer weather is better for joints and muscles while exercising – just don’t overdo it. Use sunscreen and chug water. 19. Omega-3 fatty acids found in cold water fish and almonds are heart healthy good fats. 20. Enjoy your summer and stay fit and happy! Use down time to get an extra pump in the gym! H

By CLIFF DUNN The inaugural season of the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida (GMCSF) will end with a bang the weekend of June 17 and 18, with the East Coast premier of Metamorphosis: Change Can Be Wonderful. The program, which includes the title work – an original piece written exclusively for male choruses by contemporary composers Robert Espindola and Robert Seeley – also features music by such gay luminaries of the Terpsichorean muse as Aaron Copland and George Handel. Performances are at 8 p.m. on both nights at Fort Lauderdale’s Sunshine Cathedral. Learn more at www.GMCSF.org.

MAY 26, 2011

The Depot: Summer Comes Poolside Off Wilton Drive Owners Jim Babb and Marc Scharphorn have unveiled a summer that’s full of events at The Depot Cabana Bar & Grill on US 1 in Fort Lauderdale. Kicking off the season, Memorial Day Weekend with the return of a Poolside T-Dance that evokes memories of Club Caribbean Resort’s legendary Tea Dances in the late 1980s, just down the road at the current location of the Original Pancake House. (And it is hard to imagine ordering a western omelet today on the spot where so many memorable moments transpired next to CCR’s pool.) June will also see the inauguration of The Depot’s Pool Volleyball League, which will be run similarly to a bowling league, and the Pride Pool Party on Saturday, June 18, hosted by Chad Bush with DJ Daddy O. The cabana bar is located adjacent to the America’s Best Inn & Suites, which is offering a deep discount on rates that weekend (which may make for a cool stay-cation that’s inexpensive and just minutes from Wilton Drive, Sebastian Beach, as well as the

events happening around town that Stonewall Weekend – and just steps away from The Depot’s bar and grill.)

Water, Water, Everywhere, and Not a Drop to Drink A somewhat happy ending to the vandalism which occurred last week to the water pump system at Island City Health & Fitness (ICHF) in Wilton Manors. On Wednesday, May 18, Broward Sheriff ’s Office (BSO) deputies pulled over a suspicious-looking white Grand Marquis that was dripping mud. The stop occurred around 3 a.m. at the 4700 block of North Dixie Highway. The occupants, Gannon Wing, 20, of Coconut Creek and John Martin, 29, of Fort Lauderdale, were likewise up to their armpits in muck. After they initially offered the constabulary that he were just coming back from the beach, the Crown Princes of Crud confessed to having stolen 26 backflow valves found in their car, along with the ax they used to “liberate” the piping. The pair has been charged (so far) with loitering/prowling; other charges are pending (count on it). ICHF owner Reece Darham and GM Bryan Nosal say the club’s water supply has been temporarily re-routed, and that a new unit should be ready to install in approximately two weeks. Photos courtesy: BSO
