A report titled “All Children Matter: How Legal and Social Inequalities Hurt LGBT Families,” which was released on Tuesday, showed the damaging effects that current laws will, and do have on the children involved, and how they are hurting the innocent. One aspect discussed within the report explains that children were more likely to live in poverty if they grow up in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender families. This is due to a lack of federal recognition of same-sex marriages, which in turn, means such families face higher tax burdens and unequal access to health insurance and government safety net programs. The report was released online and written by a range of different groups advocating gay rights including the Liberal Center for American Progress, the Movement Advancement Project, and the Family Equality Council. Other participants in the project were the National Association of Social Workers and the Child Welfare League of America. “The reality is if you look at today's

modern families, they come in all shapes and sizes. Fewer than a quarter of all US households are made up of married heterosexual couples raising their biological children, yet public policy is consistently failing those children whose families do not fit into this certain mold,” said Jennifer Chrisler, executive director of Family Equality Council. She went onto say, “All children matter, and we need our laws to affirm this.” “Many Americans don’t realize how anti-gay laws and policies hurt children,” said Jeff Krehely, director of the LGBT Communications and Research Program at the Center for American Progress. “For example, the Supreme Court of North Carolina just invalidated all secondparent adoptions, undermining family security and leaving children as legal strangers to the LGBT parents who have raised them since birth. Similarly, when states like Minnesota and North Carolina advance ballot initiatives to deny marriage to same-sex couples, it can have seri‘CHILDREN HURT’ continues on Page 15
Halloween Happenin’s Area Readies for a Long, Scary Weekend Halloween, the unofficial gay national holiday, is upon us. Your costume is all ready. Each stitch has been crafted with the care of Susan B. Anthony or Martha Stewart. The BeDazzler is all but worn out making sure all the bling is in the right place. Each feather has been carefully placed in the proper position and correctly fluffed. And, if you’re planning on showing a lot of flesh, you’ve already visited your favorite tanning salon for “just the right look.” You may even have accidently glued your glue gun to the coffee table. You’ve been planning your costume for this year since November of last year and now it’s all come together nicely. The best part of Halloween? The more trailer-trashy you look, the more fashionable you are so put away those designer labels for the weekend. There has been much confusion this year as to when Halloween will be

celebrated – or if Halloween will be celebrated at all. For the last two years, Halloween has fallen on a weekend evening but this year, it’s falling on a Monday. Some places are celebrating on Saturday, others are Sunday, some more are celebrating on both nights. However, a party is a party so many are celebrating all three nights which means three nights of costume contests. Then there are the other pertinent questions. Will there be a large block party? The answer is yes. Will Wilton Drive be closed? The answer is no. However, as last year proved, you can have a great and safe time on Wilton Drive without closing down the street. WilMa’s finest will be out in force making sure the traffic yields to the ghosts and goblins and peacocks that are certain to line “The Drive.” (But it is still your responsibility to cross the street with care.) ‘HALLOWEEN HAPPENIN’S’ continues on Page 6

Florida Senate Accidently Outlaws Sex … All Sex TALLAHASSEE, FL – In an attempt to make bestiality illegal in the State of Florida, a poorly worded law that passed the Florida Senate and took effect on October 1 accidently makes having sexual relations totally illegal. This includes male-male sex, female-female sex, malefemale sex. The statute bans certain unapproved sex acts involving “animals” and scientists have noted that humans are animals so the statute also bans sex acts involving humans. It is unknown how much of a problem bestiality in the State of Florida was to begin with or how many new jobs will be created in Florida by outlawing sex. H
Help Poverello Help Others for Thanksgiving WILTON MANORS, FL – The Poverello Center is falling short this year in providing Thanksgiving dinner to members of our community with HIV/AIDS. According to Poverello’s Dale Madison, “We’re falling way, way short this year. Typically, it’s 1,200. However, this year because of the economy, we’ve had to take on more clients and we’re going to need about 2,000. It’s tough out there. Some of the people that left while the economy was growing have had to come back because either they’ve lost their jobs or their job has been downsized. It’s been a tough year.” For a donation of $14.57, you can provide a complete Thanksgiving dinner for a family which includes the turkey, stuffing, vegetables, cranberry sauce, pie and all the rest of the fixings. You can also just drop off a turkey at Poverello and they can add the rest of the accompaniments. “War of the Worlds” BOCA RATON, FL – Relive the most infamous radio broadcast in radio history live on stage at the Caldwell Theatre. Seventy-two years ago, audiences were thrilled and horrified by a radio broadcast that took place Halloween night. Aliens were invading! No one was safe! Only a select few knew it was all a creation of the brilliant Orson Welles and his Mercury Theater. H.G. Welles’ “War of the Worlds” went down as the most
infamous radio drama in history. South Florida audiences have the opportunity to relive this amazing broadcast -- live on stage at the Caldwell Theatre in Boca Raton. “War of the Worlds” will be presented at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on October 31 on the Caldwell Theatre’s main stage. Local favorite Gordon McConnell will direct a cast including Avi Hoffman, Dan Leonard and Laura Turnbull that will not only enact multiple roles, but also recreate the amazing sound effects utilizing authentic devices used in radio drama in the 1930’s. Another aspect of the production is that all the locations will be transferred from New Jersey to Palm Beach County. Thrill to aliens landing in a Delray Beach pineapple grove. Listen in horror as the invasion marches down Clematis Street. It’s the perfect entertainment for Halloween and, best of all, the audience gets to be part of the action with the actors and stage manager cueing you to provide the additional sound effects. “War of the Worlds” is a presentation of AirPlayz, a company dedicated to the art of radio drama, produced by 2Watts Productions. Admission is $10, and reservations can be made by calling 561-6320517 or send an email to airplayzartsradio@gmail.com. H

The kiss took place during the Hartford Public High School’s production of the musical, “Zanna Don’t!” According to WTIC-TV, “Zanna Don’t!” depicts life at the fictitious Heartsville High, where students with academicallycharged interests sit atop the popularity echelon while football players are the outcasts and heterosexuals must conceal their sexual preference to avoid public scrutiny. During the show, two men in the cast share a brief kiss. The school reported that a number of male students, apparently the football team because of the uniforms they were wearing according to the school, got up and walked out of the play when the kiss took place. The school also said that it received a great number of phone calls and was even paid a visit by a Biblethumping parent who spoke about homosexuals in an unflattering manner. H

The Out NYC Could Revitalize an Entire Neighborhood NEW YORK, NY – New York’s first gay hotel, The Out NYC, is transforming a block along West 42nd Street between 10th and 11th Avenues with practically nothing else around it. Two avenues over, are a slew of mid-range hotels such at Distrikt, Four Points by Sheraton and Fairfield Inn. The Out NYC is being built specifically for gay travelers. This new hotel is considered to have the potential to turn an otherwise barren slice of Manhattan into a hip destination spot. Currently under construction, the hotel is scheduled for opening in mid2012. However, the mammoth-sized nightclub and cabaret lounge, XL, is gearing up for an October or November 2011 opening, far ahead of the hotel’s completion date. H
Michigan Panel Votes to Ban Domestic Partner Benefits LANSING, MI – A committee in the Republican-led Michigan Senate has approved legislation aimed at blocking the offering of taxpayer-paid health insurance to domestic partners living with public employees. The measure will now go to the floor of the entire State Senate by the Reforms, Restructuring and Reinventing Committee. The State House has already passed the legislation. The bill’s aim is to prohibit public employers from extending health benefits to unmarried partners of employees whether same-sex or opposite-sex. Democrats, who opposed the bill, said the bill wouldn't apply to public universities because they have the constitutional authority to determine their own policies. Some opponents have argued the bill wouldn’t apply to state employees under jurisdiction of Michigan Civil Service Commission decisions. H

Are We Glamorizing Suicide? In a matter of weeks, I have had to write two heartbreaking stories about two gay teens who had committed suicide. This is news and it is my responsibility to print it. The bullying that caused the suicides continues to happen and has to be stopped. However, I am worried, as I am sure many of you are, that the reporting of these deaths and the subsequent events have taken the dangerous step over a line that is resulting in glamorizing suicide itself. After the death of Jamey Rodemeyer, Lady Gaga projected his image on screen at one of her concerts in Las Vegas. She then pushed to have an anti-bullying law passed in his name. This was a fitting tribute, impressive, but perhaps too impressive. Jamey was elevated to almost hero status. He was noticed, cared about, and had achieved a kind of fame that is unprecedented. Even more concerning however, is the fact that there is a real danger other people who feel they identify with him will follow his tragic footsteps. Weeks later, Zach Quinto came out, citing his reason as the death of Jamey, and how this can’t go on. He is right, but we are talking about teenagers, impressionable young minds who quite possibly can only see that killing themselves will not only end the bullying and victimization they feel, but also create acceptance and celebrity. What has gotten lost in all the amazing tributes and the celebrities pushing for change is the reality of suicide. Families are torn apart and parents are destroyed. The father of Jamie Hubley, another teen who killed himself last week, said, “I couldn’t fix my little boy.” This is the reality of suicide. It is not tributes by celebrities and covers of newspapers, but heartbreak, loss and guilt. We all need to reach out to the LGBT teens who feel they identify with the tragic stories and remind them, not only that it gets better, but that suicide is not an answer. Ever. A few weeks ago, AJ Cross wrote a “suicide note” for the Florida Agenda to bring light to the fact that after the act is completed, there are no second chances, no opportu-
nities, nothing. I felt duty bound at that point to add an editor’s comment to ensure that at no point did any teenager, or any member of the LGBT community for that matter, ever believe that suicide was an option. Suicide is brought on by feelings of both hopelessness and helplessness. We have the power as a community to show that there is hope, that great achievements are made by people who are gay. We also have a duty to help, to get in touch with schools and to reach out to districts to make sure they are paying attention to the students, that they maintain a zero-tolerance policy to bullying. We also have to ensure that though we pay tribute to those lost, we do not pursue a line of fire that could lead to, what researchers and GLAAD are calling, “contagion.” Their research has shown that there is a link between suicide-related media coverage and an increase in suicides. GLAAD has laid out guidelines to prevent us all, not just the media, from glamorizing suicide. First, not discussing the details of the youth’s life or bullying, because of the worry that others will identify with them. Furthermore, they say don’t idolize or create an aura of celebrity. GLAAD warns of not normalizing suicide by suggesting it is a “logical” progression from bullying. The media has to now follow these guidelines to ensure we don’t create a glamor angle, but we as individuals must adhere to them as well. Teen suicide is a hot topic in bars, at dinner tables and all around us. We must be responsible to the fact that we always draw our own zero-tolerance policy to the idea that suicide will do anything but negatively impact everyone. No good can ever come of it. Tracy Rodemeyer, Jamey’s mother, quite rightly struggled with the decision to continue the anti-bullying campaign for her son. She told USA Today, “You don't want to glorify this and make it where the kids are going to be copycats,” she said, “All the kids I talked to at school, I said, ‘Look at this, children. Would you want your family to have to have to go through this?’” Tracy, was, however adamant that children know about help lines like the Trevor Project when contemplating suicide. “The very second Jamey made that deci-

sion and followed through was the very second he found out it was a mistake, but there's no going back,” she said she told her son’s schoolmates. “I want to say I know my boy’s at peace with himself, but there are other ways.” Another aspect of this dilemma is the constant reassurance for LGBT teens, not that it gets better. No. Rather that they are statistically more likely to be bullied (making it normal), to be depressed, and to commit suicide. We have to report statistics just as we need to be responsible, because these points are reaching kids who are clutching to that reality. We all remember a time in high school or college when we weren’t so popular, and of course we didn’t or couldn’t identify with the sentiments of “Once you get older it will get better.” We couldn’t see past the end of the week let alone years ahead. That is where the problem lies. We need to be more forceful with the message, and make certain that the focus of that message is to remind members of the LGBT community that being a member of the community has huge advantages, to give these kids a voice to stand up and say “So what?” That is not easy; it requires a mass change in attitudes. When you have teachers posting homophobic comments on Facebook, it sets the mission back enormously. With the internet as it is, these kids have access to every horrid story, every mean comment, and all the troubles facing the community. Yet we, as a whole community, need to show them through that sad cloud, the fog of depression and the relentless taunts that there is ALWAYS hope. No matter what happens, the answer is never suicide, that there are so many positive stories in the LGBT family. I personally want to reach out to anyone who is facing bullies, and is feeling helpless, and may see these troubled and lost teens who have committed suicide as heroes. I want to tell you that your REAL heroes are in another place. They are the many, many teens who stand up to bullies and do not surrender. Follow their lead and you will triumph as well, because that kind of hero always does. H

Obama a Second Chance?” in the Florida Agenda, September 22, 2011. DEAR EDITOR, I just finished reading David Stack’s piece. It was honestly awesome to read. It was well thought out and very well stated. I agree with 99.99% of it. We do need to get back to fundamentals and to me that means first, foremost and number 1 – getting rid of the Federal Reserve (we can print and fund our own money – we don’t need to borrow from them only to have to pay them back double for it!), we need to make corporate lobbying illegal and to any politician that takes that money – punishable by death! We need all our regula-
tions back and then some. We truly need to get lawyers out of politics and all laws need to be applicable to all or no one and easily understood by all! I agree there isn’t a republican out there that will get this job done for us, but I just don’t believe Barack Obama will either, I just don’t. The guy that can get that done for us is the guy I want to elect in! I hate having to elect “the lesser of two evils!” A previous comment stated. “Stack’s piece paints the broader picture that it is not just about our disappointment but about what will happen if he loses this election to Romney or Perry.” Barack Obama will only be the lesser of two evils! Who Knew? Smile! – Your Health May Depend On It By SAM KNEW, MSW
Of all the things we do to stay healthy, one of the most overlooked preventatives in keeping the doctor away is right under our nose. How often you smile could have a direct impact on your biological and mental well-being. It may be surprising to you that when you smile, even a fake smile, you release endorphins. Endorphins are the transmitters in the brain that reduce pain, and feelings of anger and sadness. This chain reaction in mood has a serious biological benefit: increasing ones immune system, specifically in individuals with compromised immune systems. Among our best natural defenses are little known lymphocyte (white blood) cells referred to as Natural Killer (NK) cells.
These cells, in short, are the meanest, toughest little guys (or ladies) that can effectively destroy most viruses, including HIV and some types of cancers. Various studies even show that individuals with compromised immune systems and large amounts of NK cells systems have been able to postpone the use of medication treatment. And FYI: your mood makes all the difference in the number of NK cells you have. A Harvard study showed individuals with “good coping skills” and a positive outlook tended to produce three times as many active NK cells than those who were identified in a high-stress group. One aspect that experts are quick to point out is that an individual who frequently functions in high stress keeps their immune system working over time. In effect, your body is busy coping with an increased heart rate, slowed adrenaline, digestion issues and loss of blood flow to major muscle groups. This fright or flight response (the body’s perception of threat or danger) can even have long term effects, such as hair loss, obesity, diabetes, depression, tooth and gum disease, ulcers and (as it usually comes down to in this column) sexual dysfunction.
Sex and stress are definitely linked. Not only does stress contribute to a low sex drive physiologically, under stress the body releases cortisol, a hormone which inhibits other hormones such as testosterone – the principal male sex hormone. It is also responsible for healthy body development, such as retention of protein and tissue mass, which are especially vital to individuals with compromised immune systems. The good news is that it seems to work the other way around as well. Sex can be a great stress reliever. Researchers found a correlation between sex and stimulated cell growth in the hippocampus of the brain. That’s the part of the brain primarily associated with long-term memory. In addition, a healthy sex drive can result in decreased blood pressure, and an increase of antibodies and endorphins, which can increase those NK cells. Not to mention, if done right – it should put that smile back on your face. H

LGBT History Month
Wrap Up Honoring the Community’s Finest LGBT History Month has ended celebrating the lives and contributions made by 31 (one for each day in October) members of the LGBT community and/or the community’s biggest friends. LGBT History Month, which was first celebrated in 1994, is a month-long annual observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history, and the history of the gay rights and the related civil rights movements. October was chosen because the month also includes National Coming Out Day which is observed on October 11. This year, LGBT History Month celebrated the lives and contributions of the following individuals as chosen by the Equality Forum: 1. Kye Allums – is the first openly transgender athlete to play NCAA Division I college basketball. Kye identified as a male from childhood and described himself as being a tomboy. He underwent gender reassignment surgery while on a women’s college basketball scholarship, risking that scholarship. 2. John Ashbery – one of the most successful poets of the 20th century who has won almost every major literary awards including a Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1975. He has published over twenty books of poetry. 3. Alison Bechdel – is the creator of the long-running comic strip, “Dykes to Watch Out For.” With her signature subtle wit, Bechdel took on the complex and often stereotyped world of lesbian relationships through her comic alter ego, “Mo.” The strip has become a cult classic. 4. Dustin Lance Black – is a screenwriter, director and producer who, in 2009, received an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for “Milk.” Black’s recent works include the screenplay for “Pedro,” profiling AIDS activist and MTV personality Pedro Zamora. Black topped Advocate’s list of the “Forty Under-40” most influential openly gay people. 6. Keith Boykin – a political commentator, a New York Times best-selling author and a veteran of two presidential campaigns. He is the editor of The Daily Voice and has appeared on CNN, MSNBC and BET. 7. Rita Mae Brown – is an author and screenwriter, best known for her semi-autobiographical lesbian-themed novel, “Rubyfruit Jungle,” which sold over 70,000 copies and made her a champion of lesbian rights. The book’s success encouraged her to author more than 50 additional lesbian novels. 8. Lt. Dan Choi – was the nation’s leading activist for the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” He is a West Point graduate, Iraq War veteran and Arabic linguist. In 2009, Choi appeared on the MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show” and said something that would change his life forever: “I am gay.” Within a month, the U.S. Army notified him that he was being discharged under DADT.
After writing to the president, Choi became the leading activist and the most recognizable name and face for the repeal of DADT. 9. Aaron Copland – a world-renowned composer, teacher, writer and conductor. He was a key figure in forming the early 20th century American-style of music and composition. 10. In 2010, Time magazine named her Most Influential Artist and, in 2011, Forbes listed her among its World’s Most Powerful. Openly bisexual, Lady Gaga is an outspoken LGBT equality advocate. She spoke at the 2009 National Equality March in Washington, D.C., calling it “the single most important event” of her career. She was a leading activist for the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” 13. Michael Guest – the first openly gay Senate-confirmed U.S. ambassador. He was nominated by George W. Bush. Guest is now the senior advisor and cofounder of the Council for Global Equality. 14. Neil Patrick Harris – an award-winning television, film and stage actor. At the age of 16, he began his television career landing the leading role in “Doogie Houser, M.D” which earned him a Golden Globe nomination as well as a People’s Choice Award. Virginia Woolf – was an English author, essayist, publisher, and writer of short stories, regarded as one of the foremost modernist literary figures of the twentieth century. Her most famous works include the novels “Mrs. Dalloway” (1925), “To the Lighthouse” (1927) and “Orlando” (1928) and the book-length essay “A Room of One's Own” (1929), with its famous dictum, “A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.” 31. Pedro Zamora – was an AIDS educator and television personality. Zamora, who was openly gay and publicly discussed being HIV-positive, brought international attention to HIV/AIDS and LGBT issues and prejudices through his appearance on MTV's 1993 reality television series, “The Real World: San Francisco.” President Bill Clinton credited Zamora with personalizing and humanizing those living with HIV, especially to Latino communities, with his activism, including his testimony before Congress. Zamora died on November 11, 1994, the day after the final episode of “The Real World: San Francisco” aired. H

‘CHILDREN HURT’ Continued from COVER
Word Play The Pharmaceutical Shuffle “It All Comes Down to the Dollar” By CHrIStIAN ALExANdEr When I destroyed my life in 2001, I went through detox and rehab. I stayed sober for nearly a year, then I got sick. Very sick. Several days and two spinal taps, sick. I joked with my doctor that if this was sobriety, I was going back to the bar. He disregarded me, gave me new medication to take. After the scare I had in the hospital, I was inclined to take them. Long story short, it got a lot worse before it got better. Having been on one of the meds, I was on led to my tranquilizer addiction. I always thought it rather ironic that they would give a known alcoholic heavy duty tranquilizers, but back then, I didn’t know what it was and wasn’t about to question the doctor. The more I have thought about it, the pharmaceutical companies are greedy. That’s business in America. They are out to make a buck just like everyone else. But, it seems now, we also have more disorders, depression, aches and pains and anxiety than we ever did in the past. Is it that society is under so much stress that our minds and bodies create problems that need to be fixed? Or is it that the drug companies are creating the need through seeing these trends and are quickly coming up with medications to placate us. Of course, there are drugs out there that do wonderful things for people. Cancer patients are living longer, although I am forced to question the price for that time. I’ve seen people go through chemo, it’s a literal hell with no guarantee that it will work. I have no doubt that there will always be a real need for newer and better drugs, but I don’t see anything other than greed by changing a formula on a proven medication just to pad their pockets more. Sure, an extended release tablet is more convenient, but what is this convenience worth when the older one is available generically for a tenth of the price? Which do you choose: convenience or cost? Especially with some insurance companies cutting off paying for the “older” drug in favor of funding the “newest” formula. Stay healthy, but if you do fall ill, ASK QUESTIONS!!! H

roommate “making out with a dude.” Clementi filed a complaint with Rutgers officials on September 22, 2010, after learning about the webcam. He committed suicide by jumping off the George Washington Bridge later that day. The 18-year-old freshman’s death prompted a national outrage about gay suicide and cyber bullying. Before he died, Clementi told friends his companion, M.B., was in his 20s and not comfortable with others knowing he is gay. The judge said he had to balance M.B.’s right to privacy and Ravi’s right to a defense. H

Christie Calls Teacher’s Anti-Gay Facebook Remarks “Disturbing” TRENTON, NJ – New Jersey’s Republican Governor Chris Christie expressed his concern about anti-gay statements made by a New Jersey high school teacher on her personal Facebook page. The statements made by Viki Knox have set off a debate about free speech and gay rights. “I think that kind of example is not a

co-founder of the National Organization for Marriage, which opposes legalization of same-sex marriage. She said a change in the federal marriage law would not better protect children, but that marriage between a man and woman, so the child would have a mother and a father, would. As it stands, the report outlined how the current laws affect families including the denial of children’s legal ties to both of their parents—which affects everything from custody to a parent being able to make emergency medical decisions for his or her child; wrongly separating children from their parents in cases of divorce or death of a parent; tying children’s access to critical federal and state safety net programs to family structure, rather than need; denying children access to quality child care and early childhood education; denying children Social Security survivor benefits or inheritance when a parent dies; putting a child’s legal ties to his or her parents in jeopardy if the family crosses state lines; and denying forever homes to 115,000 children awaiting adoption. The report also brought to the fore statistics regarding LGBT families. For example, same-sex couples living in the South are most likely to be raising children (Mississippi has the largest percentage of same-sex couples raising children); LGBT families are twice as likely to be living in poverty as married opposite-sex parents with children; LGBT families are more racially and ethnically diverse than the population as a whole; and that decades of social science research show that children of gay and lesbian parents grow up to be as healthy, happy and welladjusted as their peers. Also, all major child health and welfare organizations support parenting and adoption by gay and lesbian parents. H Sources: Reuters, AP, “All Children Matter: How Legal and Social Inequalities Hurt LGBT Families” positive one at all to be setting for folks who have such an important and influential position in our society,” said Christie last week on a radio program. “I’m really concerned about those kinds of statements being made.” According to the New Jersey Star Ledger, the uproar over Knox began two weeks ago when she posted comments on her public Facebook page that were critical of a Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender History Month display at Union High School. The special-education teacher with more than 20 years of experience went on to describe homosexuality as “a perverted spirit” and “a sin that breeds like cancer.” The school board has launched an investigation to determine whether or not Knox’s conduct violated the school’s policies. I may have sounded more than a bit cynical when it comes to medication, the doctor’s who prescribe them and the pharmacies that distribute them, but I have reason to be. I have been told by more than one doctor that if I didn’t take their medications for my HIV, I wouldn’t live long enough to follow any of my dreams. These were and are doctors – people I was raised to trust in and believe without question. For a very long time, I played the good little patient and took their concoctions, all the while feeling worse on them than I did off. After an unscheduled “treatment holiday,” I just stopped taking my meds when my lover was dying. As distraught as I was over what I was going through and my up-coming nervous breakdown, physically I started feeling better. Then, my partner died. I spent more than a few days “resting” at a nearby hospital, all the while denying the HIV medication they wanted to shove down my throat. When I got out of the hospital, I began drinking … heavily … and often. You know those miniature bottles of booze they serve on airlines? I had them stashed everywhere-around my apartment, in the glove box of the car, in the trunk of the car, hidden in my closets, stashed in my desk at work, hidden all around the spa that I ran. I mean everywhere. Breakfast, lunch and dinner for years. Somehow I managed to keep up appearances, made it to work, didn’t have any car accidents and kept my quarterly doctor’s appointments for blood work. I had been mostly on and sometimes off my medications since my diagnosis in 1994. My number’s (T-Cells and later viral load) tests were never great, but they were never that bad. Oddly enough, when I began to disregard my doctor’s orders and got to the stage where I could drink Karen Walker under the table, my numbers actually improved. For over four years, I’d get checked every three months and for four years, I was “ok.” Even though I didn’t feel I needed to be on the meds, the doctor’s spiel was always the same.” You need to be on medication,” and because I had learned a thing or two and argued with them, they never took me seriously.
ous consequences, such as denying children access to a parent’s health insurance.” Naz Meftah and Lydia Banuelos are featured in the report. This same-sex couple, who were legally married in California, and are parents to three young children face many problems including tax implications and medical expenses. In part because Banuelos is not recognized legally as a parent, she cannot sign medical releases for the children and is not listed on any of their birth certificates. “It's not just sentimental and heart breaking. It has a real impact,” Meftah told Reuters. “We are legally married and Lydia is a stranger to her own kids by law.” The report estimated that two million children are being raised within LGBT families and are without basic safeguards. It was clear, however, to state that the children are as happy, healthy and well-adjusted as their peers raised by heterosexual parents. The report indicated that LGBT families exist in 96 percent of US counties. In 31 states, however, it is extremely difficult for same-sex parents to establish legal ties for their children to both parents, Chrisler said. This leaves a child vulnerable if a parent dies or the relationship dissolves. The report outlined in detail over 100 state and federal policy recommendations to combat the damage being done to the future of these children. They included ensuring access to health insurance and care, educating doctors and schools about gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender families and revising medical decisionmaking laws. It also highlighted legalization and federal recognition of same-sex marriage as a crucial measure to protect children within LGBT family units. Very quickly, of course, opposition came up against the report including from Maggie Gallagher, a

COMMUNITY PROFILE
Out-Law, America’s Alternative Voice Dean Trantalis Launches His Radio Show By ALEx VAUGHN Dean Trantalis knows that the gay community is an important part of every neighborhood and place of work. His new radio show, Out-Law will serve as a new voice, an alternative voice to the messages heard most often on the main-stream media. The show will provide an outlet for the unheard voices and, through the show, he aims to uncover new ways to put an end to injustice and inequality. You have been an active member of the community for a long time, why have you decided to do the radio show now? Because I feel that our message is being lost. We don’t have the same level of input because our political leaders have lost an election. We need to re-establish our voice in the community. The show will be a medium to recapture the audience.
a bastion of the national community. Certainly we are on the cutting edge of the movement towards equality. It shouldn’t all be about New York or San Francisco, when in fact we have the highest concentration of gay people in the country. This is where things will germinate in the future. Where do you most see the most misunderstanding towards our positions in the community? I think most people get drawn into the “sloganism” of politics. For example, this strong emphasis on gay marriage which was not a front runner issue for the community in the 90s and was really brought up by the right wing. They forced it down our throats and we unwittingly fed right
How will the show work? It will be a discussion show, so each week I will have a guest and have a dialogue between them and myself about issues affecting us. Of course at the end, there will be an opportunity for people to call into the station to ask questions, give opinions, and at the end of the show hopefully people who call in will be able to see things from a new perspective, or even offer up one that my guest or myself hadn’t thought of. I would like to get a wide range of attitudes towards the issues, and show all sides to the story. Are you excited for the first show? Yes I am. The first show, however, will run in a different format. I have four guests and it will be a round table discussions. I have invited two people who have been in the community for a long time (over 25 years) and who will talk to us a little bit about what Fort Lauderdale was like in the late 70s and early 80s. They are John Castelli and Norm Kent. They will also delve into how gay rights were discussed then, and how the GLBT community was viewed, compared to today. To that end, I have two other guests who are younger and can offer their perspective and views of our movement. They are George Castrataro and Elizabeth Schwartz. They will discuss where they have seen our progress and where they are working to take that to the next level. It is going to be very interesting to have past generational and current generational perspectives Would you like to see the show syndicated nationally? Ultimately, yes, I would like our voice to be spread around the country. We will be streaming live through mygayradio.com and will be prepared to go with any outlet that we can seek out as a broadcaster. I think talking about the LGBT issues in South Florida is significant because we are
into that, and it actually worked against us, because gay marriage really affects a small percentage of our community. Even Congress believes that we think that gay marriage is the civil rights of our time. It’s not. The reality is non-discrimination in the work-place, housing, and public accommodation, which affects 99% of our population, is what we need to focus on. At a federal level, ENDA is the civil rights agenda of the new generation. Not marriage. How do you feel the community in South Florida has changed in terms of activism and the fight for equality? I think it has progressed remarkably. It has taken up the call for change. It has come together in so many ways that have now produced results. This has happened while many communities around the country have only just begun to discuss what has actually been achieved here. We have great organizations. I don’t see a division here. We have disagreements, but the reality is we have moved forward in a very positive and progressive way, and I think the results show it. We have far-reaching legislation in the county. Now, in terms of the state, our powers can only go so far. We cannot expect a generally very, very conservative voter base to understand, in a short period of time, the necessity to share equal
rights for gay families and communities. It takes some time for that education process to occur. What do you enjoy most about being part of the community? I feel fulfilled by seeing the change occur and the benefits that are spread across the thousands of people that live, work and visit here. It’s a great community and I feel good about being part of its growth. I meet a lot of new people and it’s fun working with them. The challenge of course is what we are up against. The impact of what we do here is so immediate. We were the epicentre of the 2004 election. Now that we have Debbie Wasserman Shultz as our congresswoman and head of the party, there is only one degree of separation between us and the leader of the country. It is a great feeling knowing that what we are trying to accomplish is being heard by Washington and can be demonstrated with results that favor our community. How do you feel your show is going to help people? It will add to the voice and to the dialogue of what we are hoping to accomplish. This way, people will know what we are seeking and hopefully it will give a positive face, rather than allowing people to revel in the stereotypes that it is so easy to fall back on. I think that if people hear the words that we say and the messages that we carry, I think they will find it less disagreeable and as long as we continue to put a positive message out there, which it is, then hopefully people will say, “Maybe this isn’t so bad.” “Why are attitudes so negative towards people who are gay?” “What are we going to lose?” “How is it going to hurt us?” I like to think most people like to give others a fair shake and that’s all the gay community is asking for. We are not asking for special rights, just equal ones. Would you consider going back into politics? I would not consider going back into politics because I think my experience in politics will now allow me to do other things where I think I can accomplish more. At the time I was in politics, there was a certain glass ceiling in South Florida politics that needed to be broken. Being the first openly gay public official, in a high profile city was ground breaking, or glass breaking (laughs). I like to think that that was the door that opened to allow someone like Ken Keechl to win his election at the county level. H

Vampires “Taking a Bite Out of Myth” By AJ CROSS Photo courtesy, Home Box Office (HBO)
With all the sensationalism surrounding vampirism today and in conjunction with the approaching Halloween holiday, I decided to delve into the world of the occult and learn more about the subject. It seems that even with the glamour of shows such as “True Blood” or “Vampire Diaries,” there is a more medical and psychological reality to vampirism. Dr. Stephen Caplan is Some hot vampire on vampire considered to be one of the leading authorities action in HBO’s “True Blood” on the subject of “vampirism” in the United States, and accord- the absence of donors, some Vamps ing to him there are approximately fifty would find other blood sources in aniliving “Vamps” in the US today. The Red Ribbon Army Rules
By NICHoLAS SNoW
My impression is that Gilles Denizot would never declare himself to be the “General” of the Red Ribbon Army (a Facebook page with an astounding membership of over 500,000), but you could in all honesty call him the communications officer. Not only does he often post breaking related news to the group, but each member is free to do the same – a true community service, social networking style.
Born in Geneva, Switzerland, and from a multicultural background, Gilles has both French and Swiss citizenships. He now resides in Hamburg, Germany. “I never officially came out, as I never felt the need to,” explained Gilles. “I understand and respect the fact that many need to come out and tell. I commend their courage. I simply did not feel the need to tell to be approved or to build my identity. I am much more than my sexuality. And my sexuality does not define me.” Gilles has many passions including opera, overturning the death penalty worldwide, and empowering the fight against HIV/AIDS. “I use my voice for equal human rights for all human beings,” he stressed. “I was born in a family of artists,” elaborated Gilles. “My great-grandfather was a famous tenor and general manager of the Geneva Grand Théâtre. My grandfather was a professional clarinet player. He taught me how to read a score before I knew how to write, and he also gave me my first lessons in violin, piano, and singing. I guess I was destined to become a singer too and rapidly began performing in major venues worldwide. I then was fortunate to grow into a voice teacher and also began staging opera.” How has HIV/AIDS impacted and influenced Gilles’ life? When and for how long has he been an activist? “I have been an activist against HIV/AIDS since 1992,” explained Gilles. “In 1993, I traveled to New York to locate music by composers who were hit by HIV/AIDS. We have lost most of them now, but I keep their music alive by singing in the annual ‘NYC Day Without Art/World AIDS Day concert‘ I am also featured on the CD “Sudden Sunsets,” a
1995 live performance recorded at Lincoln Center NYC, with works by the late Chris DeBlasio on poetry by my friend Perry Brass.” About his social networking success, Gilles shared, “In November 2008, we created the group 'World AIDS Day 2008: Wear A Red Ribbon on Facebook!' with the simple premise of spreading awareness of HIV/AIDS and remembering lost loved ones by switching our profile pictures collectively for December 1st (World AIDS Day or WAD). Note that we did it again in 2009 and we will do it again this year. The group quickly evolved, becoming not only a hub for information on HIV&AIDS, WAD initiatives and events worldwide, but also a place for members to share their experiences of HIV/AIDS and to leave tributes for loved ones they have lost.” “On December 1st, 2008, less than four weeks after creation,” he continued, “the group was 240,000 strong and had to be turned into a page. The sea of red ribbons was amazing to see rippling across Facebook. We are now over 500,000 and I have also created Twitter and YouTube accounts for the RRA (Red Ribbon Army). I believe the RRA touches both PLWHA (People Living With HIV/AIDS) and individuals who simply want to learn more about HIV/AIDS and show solidarity.” “Acceptance and respect for and from all RRA members is paramount,” stressed Gilles, “I strictly monitor the page to avoid heinous comments. I am proud to say that in most cases, RRA members reply immediately to such comments and I appreciate the high quality level of information they share. To administrate a page with so many articulate and responsible members is the sign of a successful social network presence.” And of course, my standard question, “What gives you courage and hope?” “I have courage because I am not alone,” responded Gilles. “I have hope because I see others joining to make our world better for us all. We are all connected even if you don’t see that we are. As my friend Bill Pelke always says, ‘The answer is love and compassion for all of humanity.’” You may follow Gilles at gillesdenizot.com/blog, and I would like to invite you to enlist in the force where there is no Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy, Facebook.com/TheRedRibbonArmy. Do You Really Need to Do Cardio? Tips to Feel Super-charged! By TOM BONANTI Do you ever get the feeling that you’re spinning your wheels and getting nowhere “doing your cardio?” It’s bad enough that life can seem like the proverbial treadmill, you don’t need to be frustrated and bored when you go to the gym too! This week, let the Florida Agenda give you some tips that will put the mojo back into your cardio and help you to go from feeling sluggish and bored to super charged and rearing to go! First, let’s answer the above question with a decisive YES! Cardio work-outs are indispensable to any effective training program. They can be any activity that raises and maintains your heart rate over a predetermined amount of time, such as power-walking, biking, swimming, wrestling, martial arts and elliptical machines. By doing this, you strengthen your cardiovascular system and lower your resting heart rate. Doing regular and monitored cardio will help you live longer PERIOD! Cardio workouts burn fat. Weight training builds muscle. Any fitness regime must include both to be effective and successful! A bout of cardio will use up more calories than lifting weights over a prolonged period of time. Yet the
more quality lean muscle you build, the more calories your body will burn all the time, even in a resting state. Bigger muscles make you stronger, but cardio fitness gives you endurance. Although cardio training programs can vary from individual to individual, here are some pointers that can benefit everyone. • Drink water before, during and after any cardio workout. Stay away from sports drinks that are loaded with sugar and caffeine. • You can perform cardio on an empty stomach, preferably early in the morning if you need to jump start fat loss. But remember that early in the a.m. your body is already in a catabolic state, so you may need to eat an hour and a half or so before you hit the treadmill so that you won’t pass out from hunger or lapse into a hypoglycemic episode. • Always include a 5-10 minute warmup and cool-down, consisting of a brisk walk, slow jog and some stretching with each lifting session. • Many cardio machines have heartrate monitors that are built into the equipment. Use these to monitor your heart rate. Or, consider investing in a heart-rate monitor. Purchase a model with a timing device, especially helpful for interval training sessions. • Learn to calculate your target heart rate range in order to maximize the benefits of your workout. Ask a certified trainer about the Karvonen Method which is the most effective, but more complicated way of determining target heart rate range. In general, anyone can approximate maximum heart rate or “MaxHR” by subtracting your age from 220. For example, 220 – 40 = 180. This is the starting point for all your calculations. Depending upon your age and fitness level, determine a safe, but challenging range to work with. For example, a beginner may try a range between 55-65 percent of his maximum heart rate range for best cardio and fat burning results. • Remember to consult your physician or health care provider before beginning any new exercise, nutrition or supplementation program, especially if you are on medication or being treated for a medical condition. Need a few more tips on cardio effectiveness? You can always contact TrainerTomB@aol.com! H

Having always called South Florida home, the comedian and actor always has the issues of the community close to his heart. He is gearing up to emcee Hellrotika, Save Dade’s charity Halloween party. The Florida Agenda sat down with Michael to find out a little bit more about the man who is using comedy to get the issues out there!
and of course an incredible costume contest hosted by me. Its’ all for a good cause, and I think it’s one of the best events all year. Where would you really like to go in the future? It’s really easy for me to connect the dots of my career going backwards, but more difficult going forward. I would like to continue doing comedy clubs and really have enjoyed TV and love my singing back in the 90s. My dream is to have my own sitcom and also have a charity that helps people who are HIV positive to get access to medication.
Please tell Agenda Readers more about Hellrotika. It’s the biggest Halloween event in South Florida! SAVE Dade presents their 17th Annual Halloween Extravaganza. There will be amazing music by renowned DJ's, top shelf liquor, costume contest, celebrity appearances, special performances and over 1,000 of Miami's spookiest partygoers! The event will be held in a new venue this year, The Sabal Palm Plaza and Terrace at Jungle Island.
Are there any disadvantages to working within the community? Sometimes casting directors know of my work in the LGBT community and they only see me as playing a “gay role.” But the benefits of working towards equal protection and creating awareness of our issues outweighs that.
Are you excited about it? Yes and very honored that Save Dade asked me to be emcee this year. I love the charity. It was created in 1993 to protect gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals in Miami-Dade County from discrimination based on their actual or perceived sexual orientation. SAVE Dade, and its education arm SAVE Foundation, help raise awareness about rights and protections for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. Tell us a bit about Michael Martini? Well, I have always called Miami home. Born a long, long time ago at Mount Sinai hospital. I grew up in North Miami Beach and attended NMB senior high until I went away to college at Emerson College in Boston where I studied theatre and was in the Emerson Comedy club with fellow actors Mario Cantone, Dennis Leary and Anthony Clark. I had the first Gay and Lesbian Talk show called “the Michael Martini Hour” on WPBR back a few years ago and this enabled me to use my talents and help educate about our issues here in South Florida. How did you start out? My career literally happened by “ACCIDENT.” Ever since I was a little boy in pigtails and high heels, I always wanted to be an actor and comedian. Yet, after attending college, I was thrust into the business world. I had several high profile jobs including marketing director for Hallmark Cards, international marketing director for UNICEF and VP of marketing for Intel Corp. Back in 1999, I stumbled upon an audition in NYC for an OffBroadway show called “Down under Darling.” I lined up with several hundred actors and to my surprise I was cast to play three roles and this lit my fire even more. But I was a slave to “Corporate America.” All that changed on a rainy
When you look back over your career here, what’s the highlight? I have to say back in the 90s singing with Cyndi Lauper at Carnegie Hall was amazing. I have enjoyed many facets of my career, from opening the first Lips restaurant in NYC, to my radio show. I actually think that was the highlight, because it brought attention to our issues.
December night in 2002. I was hit by a drunk driver and subsequently had to have a hip replacement and many years of physical therapy. This made me unable to perform my function at INTEL, but enabled me to pursue my dream of comedy and acting. So, as I said, my career happened by accident! You have been away for a while, what brought you back? I took a 4 month hiatus and have been travelling and touring. It was a well needed rest and I came back to host and MC the greatest party on earth! What do you enjoy most about performing? I love the connection with the audience. Each venue is different. I love live comedy clubs and Broadway stages because it is an immediate connection. Doing TV and movies is a different ballgame. I recently started doing TV, with roles on “The Glades” and “Burn Notice.” What inspires you? Making a difference really inspires me.
When I was marketing director for UNICEF, I was inspired by the bravery of humans in the midst of war, crisis and famine. I am inspired by young gay Americans who brave discrimination and bullying and come out anyway. Thanks to my faith, I am able to take my gift of comedy and humor and use my public status to bring attention to LGBT issues and help make a difference when I can. I hope at the end, I have helped create change and inspired people. Comedy has a way of helping people understand our differences. For instance, I always ask a straight man in the audience how long he has been straight and does he think it’s a phase he’s going through and if his parents know. I ask why he made that choice. They always say it’s a stupid question, and I remind them I am asked that daily. How is preparation for Hellrotika going? The committee is working hard this year and this event is going to be off the charts! This year, we will have many choreographed numbers, four amazing DJ’s
Now, what’s the biggest cringe moment? I HAVE HAD A FEW. I was in a dinner theatre production of “Anne Frank” and it was so bad when the Nazis came in, the audience screamed, “She’s in the attic.” (He is joking!) I have had people come on stage and do all sorts of crazy things. When people heckle, it kinda makes my show in actuality. What effect has social networking had on your popularity? Social networking is the most amazing tool for both actors and the special interests we have. We can reach a mass audience and let them know what’s going on, where we are performing, and how they can help out with our causes. So what’s next for Michael Martini? God only knows. I’m booked for “Hellrotika” and am auditioning again for the many TV shows that are here in South Florida. I am also in negotiations with Lips for a possible return. Of course, I am waiting for a call from my agent about that sitcom! H

Essential Travel Tips Exchange Rates & Foreign Travel By PAUL RUBIO Outside of plane delays and unforeseen inclement weather, one of the biggest frustrations of traveling overseas is the challenge of money loss via bad exchange rates. Simply put: nobody likes to see money devalued in a Madonna-esque “Impressive Instant.” It doesn’t seem like the US dollar will triumph the Euro or the British Pound anytime soon, but you can save 3-10% of your dollar value by adhering to a few essential tips on your international travels. Charge Away – A number of credit cards have upped the incentives for charging purchases abroad. The American Express Platinum Card has removed its 3% foreign transaction fee, charging purchases at the official market rate. Several Chase credit cards have followed suit – including the British Airways Visa Signature Card and the Chase Continental Presidential Plus Mastercard. Using these “no transaction fee” credit cards is the best way to save money; you even earn points on your purchases (and you can track your spending).
Cash Reserves – It’s always a smart idea to carry cash if traveling somewhere remote. If you need ready money, don’t bother exchanging currency before your trip. All major international airports have ATMs in the arrivals area; and official bank ATM exchange rates via debit card withdrawal are superior to the rates of exchange counters (e.g. Bank of America charges only a 1% currency fee on cash withdrawals abroad). Get with the times – American Express Travelers Cheques are as dated as $40 barrels of oil. True, the cheques come with extra security if lost or stolen, but fewer and fewer places accept them. On
average, your dollar is devalued by 5-10% by using travelers cheques because foreign banks offer inferior exchange rates upon conversion. If you are adamant
about using Travelers Cheques, buy them online from American Express in the correct foreign currency before your departure (instead of US dollars). Airport Exchange – If you are one of those people that physically enjoys changing currency as a right of travel passage, first verify the official market exchange rates online or on your high-tech phone. Exchange rate counters in airports prey on tourists unaware of the real market rate and often fool them with a “no commission” policy. There may be no commission per se, but these exchange rates are vastly different than market rates, resulting in large differentials against your favor. Coping with the Dark Side of Our Heroes Caldwell Theatre Company Premieres “After the Revolution” By WARREN DAY The year-round Caldwell Theatre Company in Boca Raton is an A-1 class act. The class shows in the challenging plays they perform, and not the endlessly-repeated comedies and classics that compose the repertory of many a theater company. The class shows in the sets, which are not only beautifully designed, but also add meaning to the characters and the story. It also shows in the theater building itself, the Count de Hoernle Theatre, one of the most effective and pleasant performing spaces in all of Florida. And usually, the class shows in the high-quality of the acting, with their casts filled with professional talent who’ve earned their Actors Equity union cards. Under the creative leadership of Clive Cholerton, it’s simply one of the best theatre companies in the South. Their premiere production for the 20112012 season, “After the Revolution” by Amy Herzog, hits the mark on most of its high standards and speaks well for the season ahead. First of all, the play was picked by the New York Times as one of the ten best of 2010. It deals with a situation and a theme that has an importance and an appeal outside of its own historical context. What do you do when you discover that the pride of your family, someone who you’ve emulated
in your personal and professional life, turns out to have a secret that reveals a much darker side to his character? To some degree, we all need heroes in our lives, but it can be quite dicey to have a family member as one, because if anything should go wrong, the fallout can extend into so many relationships. In “After the Revolution,” the pride of the family is the grandfather, a kind of Alger Hiss character who achieved fame in the 1950s by not naming names at the McCarthy hearings and for being a spokesperson against the witch hunts of the times that treated every person on the far left as a traitor. The play takes place in 1999, 18 months after the grandfather has died. His granddaughter Emma has just graduated from law school and started a legal defense fund to promote his ideals. Her dreams, values, and career are tied up with the heroic image of her grandfather, and then she learns he wasn’t who he seemed to be. It’s a dilemma that’s been faced by other families, such as the televangelist who’s caught paying for the services of a male prostitute, the politician who highly embellishes his military service or family background, or the father who everyone thought was a genius businessman but
instead has been running a ponzi scheme, and, of course, the lesser and more common experience of finding out at sixteen that your parents simply aren’t as perfect as you once thought they were at six. The drama and the comedy of “After the Revolution” is in how Emma reacts to learning about her grandfather’s unsavory past, a past about to be revealed to the world in a new book. And it’s also where the play (and casting) runs into some trouble. Emma is not a sympathetic character because she suffers from the same fault of almost everyone on the far left or far right – she’s filled with self-righteousness. The fault is partly in how she’s written, and even more so in how she’s played by Jackie Rivera, who goes more for the anger than the hurt, more for the petulance than the vulnerability. You begin to feel sorrier for her family and boyfriend than you do for her. The rest of the cast find more shadings and nuance in their performances, such as Gordon McConnell as her father, Nancy Barnett as her stepmother, and particularly Howard Elfman as a kindly and wise benefactor who learned long ago that the bigger the man, the more likely, the bigger the fault. H

DINING / RECIPE
FLORIDAAGENDA.COM
Consistency in Creativity, Freshness and Quality Market 17 is No Ordinary Establishment! By TIM SLIVINSKI I first visited and reviewed Market 17 about 10 months ago when it was still a new kid on the block to the Fort Lauderdale dining scene. I had a great experience while dining there, and I have since returned many times quite recently. If anything, this farm to table restaurant has only improved in its quality of farm fresh food and the creativity of its chef and the dishes he prepares. One feature of Market 17 that I have fallen in love with is the special pricing and offer that comes with its daily happy hour, between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. (Includes Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings!) All appetizers and starters are 50% off at the bar. Not only that, but Market 17’s signature cocktails are also offered at 50% off the menu price. It is possible to sit and relax, enjoy top quality food and creatively mixed cocktails, and lose yourself in the peaceful, subtle atmosphere that defines Market 17 for a very reasonable price, because when the check arrives, it is simply cut in half. This is most definitely a win for serious foodies who enjoy dining on the lighter side by choosing several small plates rather than a large entrée. Market 17’s cocktail menu is a patron’s first clue that this is no ordinary establishment. Kimi McCurry is the bar manager, and she has created each cocktail on the menu with attention to fresh fruit juices, fruit purees, infusions, and garnishes. I am
partial to her take on the classic Manhattan: the M17. Starting with Maker’s Mark Bourbon, she adds ginger, macerated cherries and more for a delicious remix of that old stand-by. If vodka is your spirit, then try the Strawpow Capricosa. Tito’s vodka (fresh from Texas!) is mixed with fresh muddled strawberries, pomegranate seeds and lime, and agave nectar. It’s all topped off with a splash of soda. It’s refreshing, full of flavor and, like all the cocktails on the menu, oh-sobeautiful to look at. Market 17’s cocktail menu is creative, playful, and unique, with cocktails priced between $9 and $13. For a light supper at the bar or for a starter for two, you cannot lose with the ever-changing Housemade Charcuterie ($18). It arrives with two in-house made sausages, most recently smoked chicken and garlic sausage along with chorizo verde. A cheese spread, an herb ricotta spread, thin toasts offering tang and crunch, and Canadian-style boar ham that gives a slight salty addition to the palate. Rounding out the plate are various picklings (superb!) and chutneys and a whole-grain mustard. Every taste bud is hit with flavor, making it difficult to decide what on the plate is your favorite. If you are not squeamish about names, try the Crispy Pork Belly ($15). It is pork belly that crisps and then gives way to a smooth consistency of flavor unlike any
bacon in the world. Served with parmesan polenta, caramelized onion, and arugula, this dish’s complexity of flavors and textures satisfies. Jumbo Stone Crab Claws are in season now, and Market 17 offers them – and they truly are jumbo – at $20 a piece. Sweet and tender, they come to you with three sauces for dipping: avocado soup, chililime aioli, and mustard sauce. As each sauce is as good and fresh as the next, it is nearly impossible to determine a favorite. Feeling in the mood to splurge a bit on a recent Sunday evening visit, my partner and I decided to try a couple of entrées. Every entrée on the Market 17’s menu is offered in both petite and full entrée size. This is another plus that allows diners to be more adventurous and try more dishes while allowing the health conscious diner some portion control. I opted for the petite portion of the Roasted Red Feather Chicken ($19/$32). The chicken breast arrived moist and juicy and sitting atop a most delicious acorn squash spaetzle cake. The fall flavors were a perfect harbinger of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. Milk poached turnips escarole accompanied my entrée and I eagerly consumed every bit. My partner decided to try the Grilled Wreckfish ($22/$36), though neither of us were familiar with this particular fish. I have since found out this species lives in old shipwrecks, hence its name. It is a low harvested
Market 17 1850 SE 17th St., Fort Lauderdale, FL 954-835-5507 fish and is a great source of protein and B vitamins and minerals. A perfectly grilled and deliciously succulent piece of fish arrived, accompanied by chick pea puree, grilled heirloom tomatoes, arugula, basil hollandaise and pine nut pesto. Though it may sound like a too busy dish, it was not as each item was in perfect proportion and a complement to the others. He proclaimed the petite portion as perfect and just enough. Market 17 seems to have found an audience of fresh “farm to table” food lovers in the South Florida market, and for very good reason. It offers a consistency of quality that is unrivaled in Fort Lauderdale. Cocktails, appetizers, and entrees use creative and fresh ingredients in unique ways. If you are looking for a special place for a relaxing and delicious evening out, head to Market 17. And if you begin your evening in the bar, look for me! H
French jean’s kitchen Apple Tart Most modern recipes for apple pie require an ounce or two of sugar, but the earliest recipes didn’t. There are several possible reasons: Sugarcane imported from Egypt was not widely available in 14th century England, where it cost between one and two shillings a pound – roughly the equivalent of about $50 a pound in today's prices. Or, the absence of sugar in early recipes for apple pie may instead indicate that the medieval English did not have quite as sweet a tooth as their descendants. Perhaps, as in some modern “sugar-free” recipes, the juice of the fruit was intended to sweeten the pie. This open-faced tart is typically French. The glaze will not only sweeten but will beautify the tart. • 4 Granny Smith apples • 1/2 cup sugar • 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) cold unsalted butter, small diced • 1/2 cup apricot jam • 1 rectangle of puff pastry • 2 tablespoons Calvados, rum, or water Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper. Place the dough on the prepared sheet pan and refrigerate while you prepare the apples. Peel the apples and cut them in half through the stem. Remove the stems and cores with a sharp knife. Slice the apples
crosswise in 1/4-inch thick slices. Place overlapping slices of apples diagonally down the middle of the tart and continue making diagonal rows on both sides of the first row until the pastry is covered with apple slices (I don’t use the apple ends so as the arrangement looks even and delicious to the eye, but you are the chef). Sprinkle with the full 1/2 cup of sugar and dot with the butter … OR use the whole apple as I did in the photo and make individual tarts which are gorgeous too! Bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour, until the pastry is browned and the edges of the apples start to brown. Rotate the pan during cooking. If the pastry puffs up in one area, cut a little slit with a knife to let the air out. Don't worry! The apple juices will burn in the pan but the tart will be grand! When the tart's done, heat the apricot jam with the Calvados and brush the apples and the pastry completely with the mixture. Loosen the tart with a metal spatula so as it doesn't stick to the paper. Allow to cool and serve warm or at room temperature. Bon appétit! H
