LGBT Candidates Rack Up Big Election Wins The LGBT community made major gains in last week’s general elections capturing more seats in state and local governments then they ever have in a single election cycle. These gains more than made up for losses experienced in the elections of 2010. Pro-LGBT causes were also big winners in November 2010. There were, however, some losers. THUMBS UP: • Michael Smith won a spot on the Largo, Florida City Commission for seat 1. He beat out Mary Gray Black by 546 votes. Black had a history of anti-LGBT activism while sitting on the city commission. • Annise Parker won re-election as mayor of Houston, Texas. Parker was first elected to mayor in 2009 becoming the first out lesbian woman to become mayor of a major US city. She won against five other candidates with a large enough margin to avoid a run-off. Prior to becoming mayor, Parker sat on the Houston City Commission and was the city’s comptroller. • 22-year-old Alex B. Morse was elected
mayor of Holyoke, Massachusetts becoming the youngest mayor in the country. The Brown University graduate and Holyoke-native beat out 67-year-old incumbent Elaine Pluta for the mayorship by nearly 1,000 votes. The main issue that propelled Morse’s win was his opposition to casino gambling in Massachusetts, an issue that Pluta rallied around as a way to boost Holyoke’s economy. Transforming Holyoke’s education system was also at the top of Morse’s agenda, as well as creating jobs through tax incentives and building upon Holyoke’s arts and entertainment district. Being mayor will be Morse’s first job since graduating from college. • Adam Ebbin was elected to the Virginia State Senate District 30 to become the first openly gay senator in the state. He defeated Timothy McGhee by a margin of 67% to 33%. Ebbin was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, representing District 49 since 2004 and was only the third openly gay elected official in Virginia. Ebbin is currently employed by the Service

Catholic Bishops Launch Anti-Gay Marriage Website MarriageUniqueForAReason.org – An Effort to Promote & Defend Marriage
Mayoral candidate Mike Cantone called on Mayor Buddy Dyer to adopt gay-friendly legislation that would apply to companies doing business in the city

It’s Not 2010 Anymore
Baltimore provided the backdrop on Monday for a Catholic Bishops gathering at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) a new anti-gay marriage website was launched. At the meeting, 300 bishops came together for the newly appointed committee on religious liberty and announced plans to respond to legislation that it says comes between citizens and their Catholic beliefs. The website the committee launched at MarriageUniqueForAReason.org was described as part of an effort to “promote and defend marriage as the union between one man and one woman.” The website features a video showing good-looking childless heterosexual couple talking about how their bodies complement each other. “Every time we make love, it's like we're making life. We're giving life to one another. It's not just sex. I come alive and there's a sense of forever in that. And I don't think
a man can have that any other way,” The man says in the nearly 13 minute video. According to On Top Magazine, the website uses the video to claim that, “True marital union is not possible without sexual difference.” “This is why sexual difference is essential to marriage. Sexual difference is the necessary starting point for understanding why protecting and promoting marriage as the union of one man and one woman isn't arbitrary or discriminatory. Rather, it's a matter of justice, truth, love and real freedom.” At their meeting, the bishops also endorsed ballot initiatives in Minnesota and North Carolina that would ban gay marriage in each state. “In the midst of these various challenges, we continue to be mindful and pray for those efforts seeking to protect the definition of marriage,” Bishop Salvatore J. Cordileone told attendees. “These include
the constitutional amendments protecting marriage in Minnesota and North Carolina, the continued effort to do the same in Indiana, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and efforts to repeal the redefinition of marriage in New Hampshire and Iowa. To all our brother bishops and efforts to protect marriage in these states, thank ‘MARRIAGE WEBSITE’ continues on Page 7

Dyer Criticized Over Gay Rights ORLANDO, FL – Opponents of Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer came out swinging against his reelection to his post last week. According to the Orlando Sentinel, mayoral candidate Mike Cantone called on Dyer to adopt gay-friendly legislation that would apply to companies doing business with the City of Orlando. Further, Cantone blamed Dyer for not moving quickly enough on a proposed domestic partnership registry. Dyer is pushing a measure which would make it easier for gays to make decisions affecting their partners. The city already offers domestic partner benefits to its own employees, a measure approved since Dyer was elected mayor, but Cantone said the city must do more. H

Plans Proceed for “New” Eden WILTON MANORS, FL – New plans are under consideration by the City of Wilton Manors’ Community Services Department for what is now being called the Eden Sports Bar. The new bar will be located on the 2200 block of N Dixie Highway, south of Five Points, on the same property as the originally planned Eden entertainment complex. Construction of the original Eden started in 2008 as an indoor/outdoor bar and restaurant complex over several pieces of property. However, cost overrides and alleged lack of proper permitting and failure to follow building codes shut the project down. Another problem was the lack of parking for such a complex. There were additional unsuccessful attempts to obtain alternate financing and open Eden as planned. Since then, the property has been sold and the new owner has scaled back the plans for Eden and will open a sports bar. Still under the consideration of the city’s Community Development Services Department, plans for the new Eden Sports Bar utilize only the main building and the empty property immediately to the north. The thatch roofing over areas of the main property is to be removed. Since its construction back in 2008, the city contended that the thatch roofing was a fire hazard. The empty lot just north of the main building from Dixie Highway west to NE 11 Ave. will be used for parking.
NEWS
There are no plans to use any of the buildings south of the main building as there were in the original plans for Eden. H
Gay Court Appointee Pulls Out WASHINGTON, DC – Edward DuMont has asked President Obama to withdraw his nomination to the US Court of Appeals. DuMont has waited more than 18 months without receiving a hearing by the Senate Judicial Committee. In his letter to Obama, DuMont wrote: “Under these circumstances, drawing the process out further does not seem either sensible for me or fair to the Federal Circuit, which has important work to do and deserves to be able to address it with a full complement of active judges.” Senate Democrats said that the Republicans in the Senate have held up the committee hearings. However, the Republicans have said that the chairman of the committee, Sen. Patrick Leahy, a Democrat from Vermont, could have called for a hearing on DuMont’s nomination at any time. DuMont would have been the first out homosexual appellate judge in the country. H
Zookeepers Break Up Gay Penguin Couple TORONTO, CANADA – Keepers at the Toronto Zoo have decided to break up a couple of gay penguins and pair them with females. Zookeepers say they are trying to preserve the species. “Pedro” and “Buddy” were brought to the Toronto Zoo earlier this year from Pittsburgh’s National Aviary to bond with a couple of eligible females. Instead, the pair bonded with each other. Zookeepers now report seeing the pair snuggling, calling to each other and displaying courtship behavior. In the 1990s, an estimated 225,000 African penguins lived in the wild. Now, the number is closer to 60,000 and dropping. The cause, biologists suspect, is changing ocean currents that are driving food sources further and further away from penguin breeding grounds on the African coast. In 2004, Roy and Silo, a pair of male chinstrap penguins at New York’s Central Park Zoo became famous for incubating and rearing an egg given to them by zookeepers. The pair’s story was later written up into the bestselling children’s book “And Tango Makes Three.” Zoo officials say that Pedro and Buddy’s separation will only last as long as they can inseminate their respective female partners. Transsexual Woman and Gay Man Take Seats in Polish Parliament WARSAW, POLAND – A transsexual woman and an openly gay man took seats in Poland’s newly elected parliament last week, historic firsts that reflect profound social change in this traditionally Roman Catholic country.
According to the Washington Post, Anna Grodzka, who was born a man but underwent a sex change, entered the assembly hall to warm greetings. Several men and women shook her hand, while one male lawmaker kissed her on the cheek. She was later introduced to Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who also shook her hand. Grodzka sat next to Robert Biedron, an activist who is the first openly gay person elected to Poland’s parliament. Both belong to Palikot’s Movement, a new progressive party that became the thirdlargest party in parliament. H
A Rectal Microbicide Could Significantly Reduce HIV Transmission LOS ANGELES, CA – A topically applied microbicide gel containing a potent anti-HIV drug has been found to significantly reduce infection when applied to rectal tissue that was subsequently exposed to HIV in the laboratory, according to a new study by the UCLA AIDS Institute. The gel was also found to be safe and acceptable to users. The trial represents the first use of this novel approach to obtain early insights into the drug's potential to prevent reallife infections during sexual exposure. In addition, it represents an important contribution to efforts aimed at strategically preventing HIV transmission during receptive anal intercourse. Until now, microbicide clinical trials have focused on vaginal transmission. These trials have had successful results in the past year, after nearly a decade of disappointment. The development of a microbicide prevention gel for rectal application has only been under way for the past five to six years. H
Study: Same-Sex Couples Affect Property Values VANCOUVER, CANADA – A controversial new study suggests that in neighborhoods where extreme conservatism prevails, the presence of one more samesex couple for every 1,000 households is linked to a one per cent drop in housing prices. In liberal neighborhoods, by contrast, researchers find the associated effect of gays and lesbians on housing prices to be positive. According to the Vancouver Sun, the study, which appears in the Journal of Urban Economics, draws data from more than 20,000 home sales and controls factors as access to amenities, racial homogeneity, education, income, housing characteristics and quality of nearby schools. A 2009 study reported that 20% of gays and lesbians consider themselves to have been victims of either price or property discrimination at some point. Importantly, however, research led by Richard Florida at the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management has consistently shown that higher concentrations of gay people are linked with economic prosperity, innovation and creativity within a region. Man Arrested for Gay Assault in LA Fitness ATLANTA, GA – A 29-year-old man was arrested last week in the locker room of LA Fitness in Atlanta’s Ansley Mall for allegedly masturbating and humping a gym-goer in the bathroom. This particular LA Fitness is very popular with Atlanta’s gay community. Q Project Atlanta reported that Edwin Troy Causey was arrested in the locker room and charged with public indecency and simple battery. He was taken to the Fulton County Jail and is being held on a $1,500 bond. Charlie Stadtlander , an LGBT activist and former candidate for the Atlanta City Council and Board of Education, said he spotted Causey in the restroom of the gym when he entered. He noticed some movement by Causey in his peripheral vision and turned to find Causey allegedly masturbating. Stadtlander contends that he looked around and saw Causey jerking off while watching himself in a mirror. Stadtlander said he decided to leave the restroom when Causey walked up to him and grabbed Stadtlander’s leg and started thrusting himself, rubbing his penis on Stadtlander’s leg. Stadtlander said he then pushed Causey off and tried to lock himself in one of the restroom stalls. Stadtlander said he then waited until he thought Causey left the restroom before he entered to grab his workout bag and cell phone to call police. Instead, Stadtlander saw Causey laying naked on the floor rolling around. Stadtlander said that Atlanta police officers arrived within minutes of his call, and one from gym management, to 911. Stadtlander, concerned with how officers might react to the incident given the Atlanta Police Department’s troubled relationship with the LGBT community, asked an officer to notify one of the agency’s LGBT liaisons. The officer did so and a detective who arrived detailed the case to Officer Brian Sharp, one of two LGBT liaisons with Atlanta police. Stadtlander said he didn’t know how the Atlanta police were going to handle his situation, but said the police were very polite and comforting and extremely professional and was pleased how the police handled the incident. Chick-fil-A, which is owned by a Baptist family that takes pride in guiding the business with religious principles, has refuted claims that it is anti-gay. According to the Daily Star, work on the new film should start early next year. The Welsh sportsman, who came out as the game`s first gay star, shocked fans recently when he revealed his plans to quit rugby because he can no longer “give 100%” to his team Crusaders. Rourke’s film will follow Thomas’ rugby career and focus on his sexuality, which he kept secret until coming out in 2009, becoming the first openly gay professional male athlete. H

Hillary Clinton Calls for “An AIDS-Free Generation” BETHESDA, MD – Secretary of State
NEWS
Hillary Clinton called on the United States and its allies to scale up their funding for HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment to “change the course of this pandemic and usher in an AIDS-free generation.” Clinton made her statement during a speech at the National Institute of Health (NIH) last week. “I want the American people to understand the irreplaceable role the US has played in the fight against HIV/AIDS. It is their tax dollars, our tax dollars, that have made this possible and we need to keep going,” she said. “Creating an HIVfree population has never been a government priority until today. Today it is possible because of scientific advances largely funded by the United States.” Later Clinton announced that Ellen DeGeneres has been named as a Special Envoy for Global AIDS Awareness. “I’m honored to have been chosen by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton as Special Envoy for Global AIDS awareness. The fight against AIDS is something that has always been close to my heart and I’m happy that I can use my platform to educate people and spread hope. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go look up what ‘envoy’ means,” DeGeneres said in a written statement. H
American Pro Soccer Player Comes Out as Gay QUEBEC, CANADA – Former Major League Soccer player, David Testo, told the CBC that he was gay and regrets not coming out sooner. Testo played for the Columbus Crew. “I’m gay, I’m gay. I did not choose. It’s just part of who I am. And it has nothing to do with the talent of a soccer player. You can be both an excellent soccer player and be gay…” Testo told the CBC, according to OutSports. “I really regret not having said [this] publicly earlier. I fought with it all my life, my whole career. Living the life of a professional athlete and being gay is incredibly difficult. It is like wearing a secret… it saps all your energy to you, in addition to having to perform, having to play.” H
Perry Says He “Would Be Comfortable” Reinstating DADT WASHINGTON, DC – GOP presidential hopeful Texas Governor Rick Perry suggested to ABC News that he would reinstate “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Perry made his statement to ABC’s Christine Amanpour and said he promised to speak to military commanders about the policy if he’s elected president. “I think ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ worked very well,” Perry responded, ignoring the thousands of service members dismissed from the military because of their sexual orientation. “I think the President of the United States changing a policy that was working well and to do it while we were at war in two different theaters, I think was irresponsible and I think he truly did it to respond to his political base,” Perry said. IRS: Sex Change Surgery Is Tax Deductible WASHINGTON, DC – The Internal Revenue Service has announced that it will permit people to deduct the cost of gender reassignment surgery from their taxes. Time magazine has reported that earlier this month, IRS officials notified the Tax Court that it would abide by the 2010 decision that held that some medical expenses from such surgeries could be deducted. It also ended the decade-long battle that Rhiannon O’Donnabhain, who was born a male and fathered three children, waged against the IRS to deduct $5,000 in expenses she incurred to reassign herself to become a female. The IRS had contended that they denied her first request claiming that the procedure was cosmetic. H
Pioneer Lesbian Book Publisher Dies TALLAHASSEE, FL – Barbara Grier, a pioneer publisher who challenged mainstream prejudices to make literature by and about lesbians widely available in the United States and abroad, has died. She was 78. Grier, a founder of Naiad Press, died of lung cancer last week in Tallahassee, according to her longtime partner, Donna McBride. Grier and McBride launched Naiad Press in 1973 with a $2,000 loan and built it into a $1-million business. By the time it folded in 2003, it had published more than 500 titles by authors such as Rita Mae Brown, Katherine V. Forrest, Jane Rule and Sheila Ortiz Taylor. Before she and McBride, a former librarian, started Naiad, lesbian literature consisted primarily of pulp fiction written by men whose protagonists generally ended up one of three ways: They married a man, went crazy or killed themselves. Grier wanted to provide lesbian readers with stories that could help them lead happier lives. H

Trina Vodraska and Janelle Sievers, who are engaged to be married, said planning for their June wedding took an unexpected turn during a taste-testing appointment last week. They said they entered the bakery and introduced themselves as the couple getting married. The baker told them that she was a Christian and had her convictions and said she would not be able to make the couple a cake. A director of local advocacy group OneIowa said it's unfortunate anyone would be willing to turn away business because of their beliefs. H

you for your courage and witness, please count on our continued support and prayers.” Bishop William Lori, who is the leader of a new national religious liberty committee, condemned federal and state policies that he said interfered with the church's ability to provide social services, from health care to immigrant support to international aid. "We should not be obliged to provide services or other initiatives that are contrary to our conscience," said Lori, bishop of Bridgeport. “We don't need the government forcing our hand.” On the federal level, the bishops have been pressing the Health and Human Services Department during its public comment period for a broader religious exception to part of US President Barack Obama's health care overhaul that mandates private insurers pay for contraception. Archbishop Timothy Dolan, president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, said the bishops are not just reacting to Obama's policies, but to a broader society in a “drive to neuter religion” and “push religion back into the sacristy.” "That's a cultural issue that the church has been concerned about forever, not just in the United States," Dolan said. Dolan also said he discussed the church's concerns with Obama when the two men met last week in at the White House. The archbishop said Obama was "extraordinarily friendly" and "very ardent" in reassuring Dolan that the administration would look into the problems. “I left there feeling a bit more at peace with this issue than when I entered,” Dolan said. Dolan also said, “The church has nothing against compromise, but we can't compromise principle.” The American Civil Liberties Union is suing to stop the agency from making grants to groups who “impose religiously based restrictions on reproductive health services.” "We should not be at a disadvantage competing for contracts because we bring certain convictions to the table," Lori said. won, the Senate would have come under control of the Republicans who had vowed to end gay marriage in the state. The National Organization for Marriage poured money into Golding’s campaign. The election turned particularly nasty when voters started receiving robo-calls urging them to question her about “what homosexual acts she endorses.” • Dr. Timothy Eustace won in a race for New Jersey State Assembly. Eustace had been the mayor of Maywood, New Jersey and became the first openly gay nonincumbent to win a seat in New Jersey’s state legislature. Eustace is a practicing chiropractor. Eustace will become one of two openly gay members of the New Jersey State Assembly. • Pedro Segarra won reelection to his position as mayor of Hartford, Connecticut. His main opponent dropped out of the race prior to the election. Segarra was president of Hartford’s City Council and succeeded former Mayor Eddie Perez who resigned after he was convicted by a state Superior Court jury of bribery and extortion in a political corruption case. Segarra is the first openly gay mayor of Hartford. • In Missoula, Montana, Caitlin Copple became the first openly gay member of the Missoula City Council serving Ward 4. Copple’s work history includes marketing and fundraising the Missoula YWCA and serving as interim director of the Montana Innocence Project. • Chris Seelbach became the first openly gay city council member elected in Cincinnati, Ohio. Seelbach, 31, was vice president and chief financial officer of the marketing and public relations firm, The Seidewitz Group. He was also the first openly gay candidate to run for city council in Cincinnati. Seelbach was elected in what the Cincinnati Enquirer referred to as a major shakeup of the Cincinnati City Council with the removal of four Republican city councilmen and replacing them with Democrats with the majority being African-American and a major issue being the future of a streetcar project. • LaWana Mayfield became Charlotte, North Carolina’s first openly gay city council member. She was just part of a LGBT wave in North Carolina’s elections. Openly gay Chapel Hill Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt won reelection. Lee Storrow won a seat on the Chapel Hill Town Council. Storrow, 22, became the youngest member to serve on the city council. Incumbent Alderwoman Lydia Lavell won reelection to the Carrboro, North Carolina town council. • Bruce Harris was elected Chatham Borough, New Jersey’s mayor becoming the nation’s first gay, African-American Republican mayor. municipal government 13 years ago, and was selected to fill a seat on the council vacated by Dick Plambeck when he was elected to mayor. Harris was re-elected to the council in 2005 and 2008. This was his first mayoral campaign. • Zach Adamson was elected as Indianapolis’ first openly gay city council member. Adamson was a small business owner in downtown Indianapolis for 13 years and community development advocate for nearly a decade. • Mary Doran was elected to the St. Paul, Minnesota School Board. Doran is the mother of two girls who attend Saint Paul Public Schools and has, over the last two years, volunteered over 250 hours at their school. She also served on the Citizen's Budget and Finance Advisory Committee for two consecutive school years and served as the Chair for the second term. • Edwin Mah Lee won election as Mayor of San Francisco. He was appointed mayor by the Board of Supervisors on January 11 to serve out the remainder of former mayor Gavin Newsom’s term, after Newsom resigned to take office as Lieutenant Governor of California. At the time of his appointment, Lee pledged not to run for the office, but he later decided to join the race. Lee won his own election to the office last week to serve a full term as mayor. • By nearly a two-to-one margin, the voters of Traverse City, Michigan supported an ordinance prohibiting discrimination on sexual orientation.
THUMBS DOWN: • By a margin of a mere 24 votes, Manuel Rodriguez, Jr. beat out Ramiro Fonseca in his reelection bid as Trustee for the Houston School Board. A week prior to the election, Rodriguez was accused of sending out an anti-gay ad against his opponent. The campaign brochure said about Fonseca: “his records show he spent years advocating for gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender rights … not kids.” The day after Rodriguez won reelection, he apologized for the campaign brochure. • Rose Marie Belforti won reelection to town clerk for Ledyard, New York. She won with 62% of the vote. Belforti made national news earlier this year when, shortly after same-sex marriage became legal in the state of New York, she refused to sign same-sex marriage licenses claiming that being forced to sign the licenses violated her religious rights. OPINION
Holiday Blues The holiday season is upon us, the Christmas music has already made it into the stores and everyone is starting to get swept up in the excitement/panic that is the holidays. As Thanksgiving approaches, people are beginning to prepare. Have you? What will you be doing? The holidays, however, for a lot of gay people are not a time for rejoicing or for fun, but for sadness and loneliness. There are many people who have lost touch with their family, or who don’t feel they can be themselves with them, especially during religious occasions, so they opt out. This creates a downer for the few days, an encompassing sense of loneliness, and worse, a questioning of whether being themselves was really worth it? Many gay people have created a different type of family unit that is comprised of friends, and all year round they aren’t lonely, they have people around and they don’t miss their family. They develop routines and fill their lives with the love and support they couldn’t get from their biological families. The holidays have the ability to upset this happy bubble and create a great deal of stress. Unfortunately around this time of year, on the key days, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, New Years Day, a lot of gay people lose many people in their circle as they leave to go somewhere else to spend time with their families (however unwilling they may be), leaving others left behind. The main factor affecting the majority of the community during the holidays is stress. Your heightened stress can, and often does, come from every angle. Work, family, finances, social pressures all contribute and as everyone, gay or otherwise, tends to get stressed during the holidays. Under the jolly spirit, there is a simmering volcano that could erupt at any moment. At work, as the year draws to a close, targets have to be hit, days off and holidays are all required to coincide--ultimately leaving one person stuck at the office, whilst everyone else is off celebrating. I have even heard of companies suggesting that as the gay man doesn’t have a wife and kids that there “family time” is not as important, feeling that you
can see your friends at any time. In this case, don’t be stressed, be strong. You have a family to see at Thanksgiving and that’s that. If you aren’t out at work, the office parties could be your stressor. They can be an extremely daunting occasion. This forced fun with co-workers can almost always be guaranteed to evoke fear and dread, particularly if you are subject to rumors or the advances of the dappy secretary. And what of the fear that you might get so drunk that you impulsively declare your love for your boss! That paranoia and anxiety goes triple for family gatherings. You go home to wherever and while your sister and her two kids are the joy of the party, you are sitting out of the loop wishing you had stayed home, whilst fending off questions from your Aunt Miriam about when you will settle down with the right girl (or boy)! If you are out to your family, that is great. Yet as I have heard so many people say recently, “I’m not going home, my step-father is a bible-basher/homophobe/bigot.” Or the excuse, “I would go home, but I can’t be myself and I know my life choices irritate my family. I’m better off staying away.” My very favorite is, “my brother is a homophobic oaf, who thinks being gay is dumb!” If that is how you feel, minimize the stress and don’t go! Even if you don’t go, there is the financial aspect of the holidays. Without question, holidays cost money, be it for the Thanksgiving dinner, the Black Friday extravaganza or the gifts for Christmas. The trick to combating this is to be realistic about what you can afford. Don’t be running to buy your friend a watch to show how much money you have, if you are paying it off for the next year, you may not even be friends with him or her when you are done! Also be realistic about why you are buying gifts and what you want to say. At this time of year, and in this economy, the thought really will count. As long as your gift says “I’m thankful for you and I love you,” trust me, that doesn’t have to come from a Bal Harbour Store! Plan your budget, be real about who you get gifts for and why. Being real and realistic during this season, is not only important in terms of “being yourself,” but also in terms of the reality of the situation. This is not your life. It is simply a few days out of it.
Letters to the Editor In response to the cover story “Gay Rodeos; Sexy Cowboys or Animal Abuse” in the Florida Agenda, April 7, 2011. DEAR EDITOR, [The Gay Rodeo is] Horrible! Definitely animal abuse. I would hope that a group of people who want to be treated with respect would show the same for innocent animals and not torture and injure them for sick “entertainment.” SINCERELY, SHELLEY In response to Recipe in the Florida Agenda, Jean Doherty. DEAR EDITOR, Just desired to say Jean Doherty’s article
FLORIDAAGENDA.COM
Alex Vaughn Social pressure to be festive and bright, thankful, cheery etc., when you just don’t feel it, also stresses you out, and at this point, it is important to remember to avoid quick fixes that will stress you out further. Don’t try and hide away in a bottle of Jack Daniels, or try and buy yourself into the festive spirit. It simply will not work and you will pay for it, either with the mother of all hangovers or a credit card bill that will outlast the holiday weekend, 2014! The other thing to remember during the holidays is that though it is acceptable, we drink a little more at this time of year. Watch it! Alcohol is a depressant. Though it’s tempting to go to a bar and nurse your drink rather than staying at home, think of that old adage about “being alone in a crowd.” As stressful and upsetting as the holidays can be for many people, it is temporary. If you are dragged to the Bible Belt to be with your family, you are only there for a few days. Smile, keep your head down, and get through it! If you do go to a work-related event, have a pre-prepared plan to duck out early for another engagement after an hour, and before anything embarrassing can happen. Other ways to combat holiday stress and depression include planning, planning and planning. It is a week till thanksgiving. Don’t leave it to the last minute. Call your friends; find out what they are all doing. Organize with your best friends, your closest allies to spend the day together, to cook, to bring food, to have wine, whatever it may be. If you find all your friends are out of town, then remember there are a lot of restaurants that will be open. See if you can find someone to go with. Contrary to what I have said in the past about finding and keeping friends, I am sure that on Thanksgiving day, people here will be as kind and as welcoming as they are anywhere. After all, didn’t the first Thanksgiving happen when strangers came together over a feast? With that in mind, if you do know someone who you may not be super in love with, but know has no plans over Thanksgiving, invite him or her in with your friends/family. They will appreciate it more than you could know. I know I would. H

A Look at Trans Relativity! As We Approach the Transgender Day of Remembrance By RajindRa naRinesingh Two spirited people are what we are called by many of the Native American tribes. Many of the tribes at one time looked at transgender people as holy! During colonization in the 1870s and 80s the US government put pressure on the Indian nations to stop allowing the free expressions of two spirited people. However in 1886 transgender Native American, We Wha (from the Zuni Tribe), spent six months in Washington DC meeting President Grover-Cleveland and others who never realized the six-foot Indian woman was transexual. We Wha was an accomplished weaver and potter. She pased away in 1896 and was buried in a traditional Zuni’s women dress with a pair of pants underneath. As you can see, this transgender thing is not a new phenomenon. We have been on the planet for a very long time. The very old Hindu statue of Ardhanariswara (pictured) is that of a woman with male genitalia, this provides us with more evidence that transgenderism has been around for a long time. We too have a history. The difference now is that trans people have access to medical technology that really enables us to alter our physical bodies to match how we feel on the inside. Transexuality is a part of nature. Just as
there are males and females born, there are also transgender people born. The fact that we are present in different nationalities around the world shows that transexuality isn't the product of culture. It's human nature. In India, we are known as “hisras” or ”eunuchs”. In Fiji, we are called “fa afafina” (which means – like a woman). And in Thailand – “lady-boys.” A few years ago, one of my best friends from childhood went to Pattaya, Thailand. When Brian got back, he couldn't wait to tell me about Thai transgender people. First, he said that the population of trans people there was large. He stated it seemed every third person he saw walking in the street was trans. He also told me many of the trans people held regular jobs in the society. As of 2008, Muslim Clerics in Iran have been more supportive of transexuals. Iran carries out more sex change operations than any other nation in the world besides Thailand. The Iranian government provides up to half the cost for those needing financial assistance, and a sex change is recognized on the birth certificate. Then there are places like Jamaica where being LGBT can be a matter of life and death. There has been a number of reports of violence and even murders
against the LGBT community there. For many years, violence against gay people was even promoted in many of the reggae songs. The song “Boom Bye Bye,” by reggae singer Buju Banton, was one of the most popular ones. The lyrics talked about shooting gay men in the head. There have also been recent reports of LGBT executions throughout Africa. Uganda even recently passed an AntiGay law, stating that homosexuality is illegal and if enacted, would mean being gay would be punishable by death or life imprisonment. So as I look at different cultures around the world both then and now, it really is Trans Relative! I guess we trans Americans could be dealing with worse situations. As trans Americans, we have come a long way. Thanks to the many trans sisters and brothers that have come before us. On November 19 at the Sunshine Cathedral at 6 p.m., the Transgender Day of Remembrance Service will be held. It's a great opportunity for us to honor the lives of transgender people that have passed away and have helped us to get to where we are today.
We Wha (left) and Ardhanariswara (right) We as a community are making great strides and reaching bigger turning points. President Obama appointed the first transgender person, Amanda Simpson, to the Commerce Department at the White House and Chaz Bono’s stint on “Dancing With The Stars” really took us into mainstream America. These are major steps for our community! For more information on transgender history, check out “Transgender Warrior” by Leslie Feinberg. H

Not So Crazy for Republicans The GOP Has Never Been More Homophobic By MaRC Paige For those who believe the national Republican Party is progressing on LGBT issues, think again. With the rise of the Tea Party, the GOP has never been more homophobic. While gay Democrats and progressive allies have pushed the Democratic Party closer to embracing full equality, gay Republicans from Log Cabin and GOProud continue failing to bring their party into the twenty-first century. Since conservative Republicans took control of the House of Representatives after the elections in 2010, they have focused not on jobs and the economy, but on their old standbys, God, guns, and gays. When President Obama declared that his administration would no longer defend the Defense of Marriage Act in court, the “deficit-obsessed” Republicans in Congress tripled the salary cap for lawyers to defend DOMA, from $500,000 to $1.5 million. As House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi leads 130 members of her Democratic caucus in filing a friend-ofthe-court brief challenging Republican determination to maintain the federal ban on marriage equality, House Republicans continue developing other ways to energize their base by attacking the LGBT community. The Obama administration’s Department of Defense has authorized that military facilities be made available for private functions and ceremonies “on a sexual-orientation neutral basis.” So the House Armed Services Committee has passed an amendment forbidding U.S. military bases to be used to solemnize same-sex unions, and prohibiting military chaplains on base from performing these unions. All 35 Republican committee members supported the amendment;
23 of 26 Democrats were against it. Eighty-six House Republicans have sent a letter urging the Senate leadership to pass similar legislation, declaring, “The use of federal property or federal employees to perform anything but opposite-sex ceremonies is a clear contravention of the law,” meaning DOMA. One of the signatories of this letter was Florida’s anti-gay Representative from District 22, Allen West. In the Senate where the Democrats still hold a slim majority, the Judiciary Committee on November 10 voted to recommend passage of a bill to nullify DOMA. The Respect for Marriage Act would repeal DOMA, and offer federal benefits to same-sex couples married in states that recognize their relationships. It was passed on a straight party line vote: every Democrat voted in favor; every Republican opposed. Reactions from two politicians over this Senate committee vote highlights the partisan divide on gay issues. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Democrat from New York, described her support for The Respect for Marriage Act this way: “Every loving, committed couple deserve the basic human right to get married, start a family, and have access to all the same rights and privileges that my husband and I enjoy.” In contrast, Iowa Republican Chuck Grassley showed his complete disdain for gay families by maintaining that marriage should be limited to heterosexuals to “foster unions that can result in procreation, create incentives for husbands and wives to support each other and their children,” and to promote “stable families, good environments for raising children, and religious beliefs.” The Respect for Marriage Act has 31
co-sponsors in the Senate who are all Democrats, and 133 co-sponsors in the House, 132 Democrats plus one Republican, Florida’s Ileana RosLehtinen. There is zero chance for this bill to become law while Republicans maintain control of the House. Gay Republicans are quick to point out that the two most notoriously anti-gay pieces of legislation, the now repealed DADT, and DOMA, were signed into law by Bill Clinton, a Democratic president. But since the 1990s, the national Democratic Party has moved closer to the American ideal of equality for all; the Republican Party, not so much. Republican presidential candidates Michele Bachmann, Rick Santorum, Rick Perry, and Mitt Romney have all signed an anti-marriage equality pledge from the National Organization for Marriage. According to Brian Brown, president of NOM, “Gay marriage is going to be a bigger issue in 2012 than it was 2008, because the difference between the GOP nominee and President Obama is going to be large and clear.” Brown is correct in noting the stark difference between the candidates on marriage equality. While President Obama has yet to embrace full marriage

equality for gays, he supports federal recognition and all federal rights for gay couples, and opposes changing the U.S. Constitution to ban marriage equality. Mitt Romney, the likely Republican nominee, has pledged to support amending the Constitution to ban gay marriage, and to nominate Supreme Court justices, federal judges, and an attorney general committed to “rejecting the idea our Founding Fathers inserted a right to gay marriage into our Constitution.” In his November 6 column, Miami Herald writer Leonard Pitts spoke to right wing incredulousness over the Democratic Party’s hegemony with black voters: “So why don’t blacks vote Republican? The answer is simple. Black people are not crazy. Being not crazy, they understand a simple truth about conservatives: They have never stood with, or up for, black people. Never.” In the last ten years, the gay community has seen progress on LGBT issues at the federal level and in many states, when the Democrats hold the reigns of power. But too often we’ve seen our rights stagnate or even reversed when Republicans are in charge. One day, when the national Republican Party ends their war on LGBT people, the GOP will earn our voting consideration. Until then, gays will also be “not crazy.” H

The Queen of Istanbul
Spoiled Rotten By ChRistian alexandeR
By niChOlas snOW
Meet “Yuky,” a thirty-something gay man from Istanbul, Turkey, and the creator of the web site, Istanbul Queens, a gay and lesbian travel guide. Yuky who is from a “modern and liberal, sensitive to the environment” family came out at age 18 to one of his close straight friends that he performed with in a theater group. Fifteen years later, while out to close friends and some family, Yuky remains anonymous in the media. About homosexuality in Istanbul, Yuky explained, “No one can arrest you because of walking hand in hand or kissing each other in public. However, it is generally not very acceptable by the people except in some areas like Nişantasi (high society district), Taksim, and Beyoglu.” Beyoglu, Yuky explained, is in the heart of Istanbul and known for shopping, dining, cafes, bars, restaurants, clubs, art galleries, antique shops, bookstores, and most importantly, people, including students, expats, tourists, and locals young and old. According to Yuky, Turkish law states that everyone is equal without distinction of any kind such as race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social original, property or other status – but this is not the case in reality. As reported internationally there is a great deal of transphobia in Turkey and there have been high profile murders of transsexuals. Also, soldiers discovered to be gay are subjected to “a psychological test period and meetings” and then expelled from the military and not allowed to work for the government either. Yuky advises tourists quite sensibly “not to be very open and not to invite people to their own place when they first meet,” and he also helps people identify the places in the city where comfort and tolerance levels are higher. Yuky recommends IstanbulQueens.com, his Gay & Lesbian Travel Guide for travel info. His blog (istanbulqueens.blogspot.com) has received visits from people in 143 countries since launching in May of 2009. “I work alone,” said Yuky, who relies on his friends and supporters to help keep him updated. There is a lot to offer in Istanbul, such as shopping tours, river cruises, events and parties, as well as a gay night tour. He does not recommend the local gay sauna because he reports that it is dirty and has many “rent boys” inside, but does suggest two Turkish baths that are “not gay” but are “clean, small and nice” with traditional baths, foam massage and body scrubbing. There are many gay bars in Istanbul (which are legal), some of which are identifiable by rainbow flags, and one club offers its own version of a dark room, this one called a Red Room. One gay club, formerly an opera theater, is
known for its shows. Yuky estimates that only 10-15% of gays in Turkey are open about their sexuality with most – especially those working in the military or government – staying in the closet. He also indicates that gays who live in “traditional neighborhoods” will remain closeted because, basically, everybody minds everybody else’s business. Istanbul seems to have one thing in common with most cities in the world in my opinion, as Yuky explained, “Dating scene is very strange in Istanbul. When I
“Yuky” talk to people, they want to have a relationship but they are not ready for a relationship as they are selfish and not ready to share their time, their life, and their secrets with someone – [they are] not respectful to the relationship. They are looking for relationships and end up with sex.” Popular online dating sites in Istanbul are the internationally popular GayRomeo.com and Manjam.com and a local website, Gabile.com. Yuky has been lucky in love, having met his partner on a gay dating site ten years ago, and they have lived together for eight and a half years. Quite romantically, Yuky explained, “[We] did not see any photos of each other and did not know [our] sexual preferences until we met. The strange thing is, I did not like blond guys and he did not like darkskinned guys. But love makes you like anything.” As for his own hopes and dreams for his life in Turkey as a gay man, Yuky confided, “I don’t expect much more than I have now. I would love to be open to my family and not to be expected to get married by people around me.” H

Inspiration is a flash of lightening. If you don’t catch it at just the right time, you don’t get the energy from it. As a writer, that charge sometimes comes in all encompassing waves of joy, hope, love, pride, fulfillment, and all sorts of physical and mental delights at once. It is, in fact, a feeling that rivals really good sex with someone you toy with planning a future. OK, so maybe sex is better, but feeling waves of inspiration certainly beats living alone in a big empty house full of memories of better times. I am supposed to be sharing a completely different story with you right now, but I caught a bolt of that aforementioned lightening from someone I hope will become a new friend, whom I shall simply identify as “A,” However unwittingly, “A” caused inspiration to strike me like an 18-wheeler rear-ending a VW “Bug.” So here I sit in my homeoffice typing whatever letters my fingers lead to the keyboard thanks to a person who “rolled the dice” on a nut like me. Maybe you will enjoy it, and catch some of that lightening as well. Maybe you’ll think I’m some sort of “whack job” (which I freely admit to). You want to know something? I can honestly say for the first time in my life that I could not possibly care less what negative feelings anyone may have towards me. My “former” life, if you will, seemed as though it was all about me. Now, I’m not that emotionally needy adolescent anymore. Not the 20 year with the 29 inch waist and big blue eyes, being pampered while standing before cameras all day either. I don’t have to have Giorgio Armani’s name on my ass (although his jeans tend to make it look better) to advertise to the world that I am somebody. I am somebody right now, sitting here, typing in my pajamas. I’ve placed all the outer trappings aside – along with the bar drama and the cliques that flock from bar to bar to bar like migrating flamingoes. Simply knowing the “right” bartender or being acquainted with the DJ du jour doesn’t amount to anything in the real world. What happens when the club closes and there isn’t another party to go to? A series of torrid circumstances mixed with bad investments had led me down a dark road no one should ever traverse alone. I, personally, was completely taken by shock. It was the kind of terror I imagine Jamie Lee Curtis felt with Michael Myers just outside the closet door in the 1st “Halloween” movie. Who was I really? I had lived my life by day getting my nails done, sitting behind a desk, counting other people’s money, schmoozing with the ladieswho-lunch set for so long, I thought I belonged. But, I was the token gay man that all the wealthy housewives loved because I fawned over them and gave
them the attention that their consistently absent husbands didn’t. We could discuss things from the latest celebrity sex scandal to the “must do’s” in the Hampton’s with ease, for we had all been there and done that, more than once. Then I found myself in a most uncomfortable situation. I could no longer keep up the lifestyle I had lived in my self-created, safe little bubble for so long. All I really got out of it were fading photographs, some dusty old catalogues with out-of-date fashions, and a person whom I once resembled but have had little to do with since. It was time to figure out what would get me back into the security of my own, personal little “bubble” once again. The difference this time was I found myself older, supposedly wiser, and didn’t want to cry to my parents. I desperately needed a new start, but kept coming up with excuses not to try, because I felt I was destined to fail anyway. Great logic, don’t you think? At this phase of my life, I truly can’t say where I see myself as of yet. Hell, I never expected to live this long after 17 plus years as an HIV+ man. I never expected to find pleasure in the little, sometimes silly, and occasionally even frightening things. Yet, being real has enabled me to feel! What’s next? I am making plans again. I’ve traded in my remote control in order to make something happen. I have hope that the future will unfold as it should, good or bad. I intend to just try and enjoy the ride. May your dreams be beautiful. May your realities outshine your dreams. H

The Greatest Closeted Story Ever Told? Clint Eastwood’s Startling New Biopic “J. Now I’m faced with a new film starring Leonardo DiCaprio as J. Edgar Hoover that could be the exact reverse. What seems contradictory and confusing about the life of a deeply closeted man to straights may make far better sense to gay men and lesbians. Hoover was not only one of the most powerful and influential American figures in the 20th century (see separate box), but also one of the most enigmatic, an ever-churning stew of great achievements and great wrongs. Someone about whom you could write a biography that mentions only positive things, and then turn around and write an entirely different book of the same length about his shortcomings and transgressions. Few individuals present so daunting a task in turning their comprehensive life into a comprehensible film. With “J. Edgar,” the result is 2011’s most ambitious and adventuresome movie--one that’s directed and produced by the indelible Clint Eastwood. It’s a life and a film filled with improbabilities. The devise the writer uses to cover this complex and capacious life is to have the elderly Hoover dictate his memoirs to a series of FBI agents (all of them seemingly picked by him for their looks as well as their typing skills), and we then see in flashbacks the events that
shaped him, and even more so, the many events he shaped for others. As it is in the nature of memory, his reminiscences jump back and forth, switching from one decade to another as his mind wrestles with what his life was like and how he desperately wants others to think his life was like. Dustin Lance Black, who wrote the original screenplay, is an openly gay man who also won an Academy Award for writing “Milk,” and he believes that once
The keeper of the nation’s secrets you realize Hoover was a deeply closeted and conflicted homosexual then he becomes more understandable and even elicits a little sympathy. In what has to be the most chilling scene of fear and self-loathing afflicted onto a gay son by his mother, the dominating Mrs. Hoover mocks J. Edgar for not wanting to dance with women. She reminds him of his boyhood friend Daffy (short for Daffodil), who had a fondness for dressing in girl’s clothes, a “perversion” that led to his total disgrace and suicide. "I’d rather have a dead son than a daffodil for a son,” she adds in her steely soft voice. With that kind of upbringing and with the stark homophobia of his day, it’s no mystery, except to some straight critics, that Hoover: • felt he had to do everything better than any other man, a real overachiever • became obsessive about other peo-
ple’s secrets, particularly those for whom there were gay rumors, such as Eleanor Roosevelt • crushed those who suggested he might be gay and carrying on a relationship with his deputy Clyde Tolson (widely rumored in his lifetime) • worked hard to cultivate a macho image, encouraging movies and comic books to depict him as a gun-toting hero • demanded that all FBI agents be clean cut, All-American men, no blemishes on their character, and in excellent physical shape. In other words, ultrastraight looking and acting
moviegoer to follow, but it is brilliant moviemaking. Leonardo DiCaprio is equally brilliant as Hoover, capturing Hoover’s contradictions in a nuanced performance spanning from age 24 to 77. It’s a tour de force that will be Oscar nominated. As Clyde Tolson, Arnie Hammer (“The Social Network”) proves he has acting chops as well as good looks, in a performance where he has to always suggest more than his words can say. The wonderful Judi Dench plays the not-so-wonderful Mama Hoover. Hoover and Tolson were inseparable colleagues and companions for 42 years. They had lunch and dinner together almost every day. They took their vacations together (often to Miami Beach). They had adjoining offices at the FBI. They even dressed alike. At Hoover’s funeral, the American flag that draped his coffin was folded by the military guard and given to Tolson. Whether they had a sexual relationship the film leaves somewhat up to you, but it’s clear that the closest thing each man had to a marriage was the relationship they had with each other. Hoover is buried in Washington’s Congressional Cemetery with Clyde Tolson’s grave only a few feet away, but it’s Hoover’s mother who lies by his side within their own fenced-off area. After all, closeted stories never have Hollywood endings. H
had dark secrets of his own. • was a control freak about every aspect of his public life, which is often true of people who fear their inner life and desires may not be so controllable • when asked why he hadn’t married, he said he was married to his job of protecting American citizens You can’t make an honest film about a man with great flaws without having some of those same flaws in the film itself. The movie “J. Edgar” has both strengths and weaknesses, noble goals and ignoble means, disjointed at times, emotionally reticent, and it doesn’t wrap things up in a neat package at the end. Eastwood has given us a movie that’s very much like what Hoover was like himself. The form and the content are one. That may not always be easy for the

Andrews Diner Celebrates 20 Years A Truly Successful Family Business By ALEX VAUGHN If you have spent any amount of time in the Wilton Manors area within the last twenty years, there’s a very good chance you have been to Andrews Diner. Nestled on Andrews Avenue just south of Oakland Park Blvd, the family-owned diner has become a favorite of the community. Next week, it will be celebrating its 20th anniversary. The Florida Agenda takes a look back over 20 years of family, community and great food! Andrews Diner is the combination of an old-fashioned New York diner and a small town restaurant. The one thing that you notice immediately is the friendly family atmosphere. The owners, Gerri and Angelo, are as formidable a team in life as they are as restaurateurs. Gerri says, “The diner is in many ways our home. Our daughter Marla grew up behind the register. She even had her wedding rehearsal here this year. Angelo and I will also be celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary here on December 11. Of course, we are also celebrating 20 years of Andrews Diner!”
the gay community has made. No one should have to live in shame when there is nothing to be shameful of. There is still a long way to go but we are happy to see the gains that have been made. Thank God for Broadway!” This humor and charm has made Gerri the “Hostess with the Mostess,” allowing her to get close to her customers. She tells me, “We have seen couples date, fall in love, get married and have children. We have sung badly to celebrate many birthdays. The customers have become part of our extended family. They bring us all their problems, joys, funny stories, hugs and kisses!” Angelo chimes in, “It’s also sad when we lose one of our customers if they get sick or pass away, because we have known them for so long.” Furthermore Gerri has managed to achieve something that in today’s world is
tion of the success of the no cell phone policy, “Oh my God, it’s like we brought back talking!” Now, the atmosphere and the ambience have gone a long way in keeping Andrews Diner popular. However the main aspect is, of course, the food and service. “Angelo crafts beautiful, fresh and all home-made food,” Gerri exclaims proudly. “We provide service with laugh-
That family atmosphere extends without a doubt to the new and established clientele who continue to support Andrews Diner. Gerri says the success in maintaining her customers harks back to the original goal of Andrews Diner: “Our goal has always been to make the customers feel at home serving delicious food at reasonable prices.” I asked Gerri about the gay community and she is quick to explain “The gay community has been a mainstay of our customer base. I grew up in the 50s and it has been wonderful to see the progress
almost impossible. The Diner has gone cell phone free. Between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and all day Sunday, patrons of Andrews Diner are not allowed to use their phone. “Everybody is entitled to relax and not hear someone else’s annoying conversation!” Gerri remarks glibly. I ask how customers react, “Those that hated it the most, now love it, I ask you, why do you bother going out to dinner if you are all on the phone?” It seems to have worked though. People don’t argue with Gerri. She laughs as she comes to the realiza-
ter and good times. We may not remember your name but we will always remember your drink order!” I ask her how she runs the ship: “We want everything just so and we have high expectations. In this sense, I suppose, we possess a bit of an iron fist, with a lot of humor. The advantage of leading like this is obvious – 20 years of success!” She beams again. There is no question that Gerri is a woman who is brimming with pride for her family and her business. She knows how to look after her staff too, a fact that is evident
as she tells me, “Most of our employees have been with us the entire time. We make a good team. We anticipate the needs and wants of all who join us!” What else does she think has contributed to their success? Hard work! “Our continued success is based on being there seven days a week serving breakfast, lunch and also serving dinner on Thursdays and Fridays! Angelo gets to the diner every day at 4 a.m. and we don’t leave till four hours after we close. This is one clean diner!” So how will they be celebrating this milestone 20 years? “We want our friends and customers to join us on Friday, November 25, after 6 p.m., for a party of good food, good friends, fun and a few surprises!” So, you know where you need to be on November 25, with Gerri, Angelo, their daughter Marla and her husband Chris and of course, the whole staff/family of Andrews Diner! Get Back to Galanga A Dining Force With Which to be Reckoned By TIM SLIVINSKI I won’t tell stories; I will be honest. It has been quite a few months since I have visited Galanga. There was no real reason, but word on the street was that things were not so good. It’s time to put those stories to bed – for good. A recent visit on a Tuesday evening for dinner had me thinking that Galanga is back and is again a dining force with which to be reckoned. When I first arrived, I had the good fortune to speak with Adrian, the new general manager, and he wants to let South Florida know that Galanga is ready to treat all of you with amazing dishes, whether you select Thai or Sushi. The hiring of a new chef directly from Thailand is a testament to the authenticity of the food that Galanga is serving to its customers. I wanted to start my dinner with something from the sushi menu. Adrian pointed me in the direction of the Kobi Tuna ($11.00), assuring me that if I were a tuna fan – which I am – that I would love it. He was more than right about that. When it was brought to my table, I was struck by the beauty of the dish’s presentation. The plating reminded me of a painting of a lobster, with its wasabi cream and masago painted from the sides of the thinly cut and overlapping tuna slices. The tuna was deliciously
rare and topped with crispy flakes of tempura. The crunch of the tempura was a perfect foil to the creamy texture of the seared tuna. I wanted to inhale every bit of it. It is a starter that I will return for soon! One of the soups on the menu, the Tom Yum ($6.00), caught my attention, so I decided to give it a try before my main course. I asked it for it to be prepared medium-spicy. I also selected chicken as the protein in the soup, though seafood and vegetarian are other menu options. It arrived as a bowl brimming with a rich broth, spicy but not overly so. It offered flavors of rich stewed tomato and lime. It reminded me, strangely enough, of a bloody Mary – in all the right ways. The chicken pieces were large enough to be identified and not overly diced. They offered texture to the richness of the delightfully tangy broth. When it is time to select a main course, Galanga offers a vast array of options from seafood to poultry (including duck) to beef and vegetarian. You can choose from traditional Thai dishes to various chef-prepared sushi or sashimi dishes. Once again, Adrian was there to guide me, pointing me in the direction of the Unbelievable Sea Bass ($28.00), as he could sense I was clearly in a seafood
jean’s Tiramisu kitchen My partner Vero is French, but her grandmother was Italian, and like all Italian “mamas,” she ruled over the roost. Tiramisu is the dessert she would always bring to the table after the leg of lamb à la Provençale we had every Sunday. She taught me to make this one, and it’s really easy ‘cause you don’t actually bake this. It’s simply layers of coffee-soaked biscuits and a sweet mixture of mascarpone cheese, eggs and sugar. Cocoa powder is sifted on top (and sometimes between the layers) for the garnish and it’s also a bitter counterpoint to the sweetened cheese mixture. To prepare the biscuit layer, “Boudoirs” (the light, finger-sized sponge cakes, you call ladyfingers here in the States) are soaked in espresso or strong coffee, often with an addition of flavorful liquor such as sweet Marsala wine or dark rum. Loads of variations for tiramisu exist. Some chefs use sponge cake or yeasted breads, like panettone, in place of ladyfingers. Other liquors are often used instead of the traditional Marsala wine in both the coffee and the cheese mixture, including dark rum, Madeira, port, brandy and cognac. I have even experimented with Baileys® Irish Cream. So you can choose, and as I always say, “you are the chef.” • 3 large eggs, with yolks and whites separated • 1/2 cup sugar • 8 ounces mascarpone • 20 Ladyfingers • 1 cup of espresso or strong coffee
• 1 tablespoon dark rum • 2 tablespoons of cognac or brandy • 1/8 cup of cocoa • Shaved chocolate Combine 3 egg yolks, 1 tablespoon of coffee, sugar, and cognac in a large mixing bowl. Beat for 2 to 3 minutes. Add the mascarpone and beat 3 to 5 minutes until the consistency is smooth. In another bowl, combine the 3 remaining egg whites and a pinch of sugar. Beat like mad until mixture forms stiff peaks, and then gently fold into the mascarpone mixture. Pour rest of the coffee into a “dipping” dish, with the rum and dip each ladyfinger, and layer them on the bottom of a serving dish. Spread 1/3 of mascarpone mixture over that and sprinkle with cocoa. Continue layering and finish with a mascarpone layer. Sprinkle with the shaved chocolate and refrigerate 1 hour before serving. H

mood that night. For a restaurant to call an entrée “unbelievable” may seem like a little too much chutzpah – but it definitely lived up to its moniker. A perfectly moist and grilled filet of Sea Bass covered in basilgarlic sauce, but not overly smothered, was accompanied by flavorful jasmine rice and grilled vegetables. The flavors and textures were amazingly balanced, and the delicate flavor of the sea bass was allowed to shine rather than being diluted. It was a beautifully prepared dish, appealing to the eyes and most appealing on the palate. I should have stopped there as my hunger was superbly satiated, but Robert, my attentive server, tempted me with Galanga’s sweet offerings. All sounded richly delicious and decadent. I tried to be “kind of ” good and asked him to bring me the Green Tea ice cream ($6.00). After all, green tea has health benefits! The cooling effect of the ice cream was a great ending to the various flavors I had consumed during my din-
Galanga 2389 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors, FL 954-202-0000 ner. The ice cream is drizzled with thin ribbons of honey and chocolate and accompanied by crispy won tons that are similarly drizzled. Elegant, simple, and wonderfully refreshing. Galanga is still a beautifully appointed space that invites its patrons to relax and savor the aromas and flavors of their many menu options. And now that our South Florida weather is becoming comfortable, do not forget that Galanga offers an outdoor patio so you can dine al fresco on our wonderfully cool and breezy evenings. The name Galanga, I am thinking, comes from “galangal,” a perennial from Southeastern Asia with an aromatic root. It is a name that fits. The aromas of the excellently prepared dishes guarantee that Galanga is certain to be a perennial along the Drive. H

A Tasty Way to Health Problems Smoked, Cured, Pickled and Potted Meats and Fish By ANDY KRESS Smoked, cured and pickled delicacies have been around since medieval times. Discovered long before refrigeration was invented, smoking and curing were initially perfected to keep meat and fish from spoiling. It was only after man realized that with smoking came added flavor that the real trouble began. Smoked products are served at every meal – breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late-night snacks – so it is hard not to be tempted. Packing in lots of flavor in small quantities, these meats and fish are powerful lures. Whether it is the bacon on your plate first thing in the morning, or a hamburger or salmon at a backyard barbeque, all of these foods add up in your system and impact your overall health. Not only are these foods high in saturated fat content (helping to pack on the pounds and raise unhealthy cholesterol levels with each delicious bite), they are also high in sodium content (a red alert for those who need to restrict salt intake – which is all of us). However, as bad as unhealthy cholesterol and high sodium are, they pale in comparison to cancer. That’s right, cancer. The big C, waiting in the wings on the back of those small and tasty smoked, cured, or pickled treats.
Cancers of the mouth and esophagus as well as the stomach and the colon have been linked to eating smoked products. The impurities cast into the meats through the smoking process are the main culprit in this case, extending an open invitation to cancerous cells to begin appearing throughout the body. Over 200 different components are comprised in smoke, including alcohols, acids, phenols and several cancer-causing substances. Think about it the next time you pop a tiny cocktail sausage into your mouth. Many of the poorer countries in the world have less access to refrigeration. As a result, their populations suffer from increased cancer in the esophagus and stomach, since their mainstay cooking methods use smoking and open flames. Fortunately, the United States does not suffer from as many of these cancers as other parts of the world, because refrigeration is used so heavily in America’s society. Nitrates are chemical compounds in cured meats that enhance the curing of salt and inhibit bacteria from growing in products. Many claim that the use of nitrates creates amino acids during cooking and digestion, causes cancer
and should be banned. Nitrates also cause tumors to form when eaten in high amounts. Consuming even small amounts of nitrates can cause serious health problems inside your arteries, heart and even your brain, so it is best to limit salt-cured meats whenever possible in your diet. Dry sausages, salami and pepperonis are usually cured in one way or another-be it air dried or salt cured. Beware of the fillers added into these products, especially if you suffer from Celiac disease or are allergic to corn, wheat and rye. These ingredients are inexpensive and add taste with few calories, and are not the only filler. Lots of saturated fat gets poured into the mix as well, adding calories and artery-clogging cholesterol. Take the time to read the ingredients in these products for not all of them are the same. Some of the fillers used are organ meats, so unless the product is marked kosher, make sure you know what you are eating. While beef and pork sausages now come in reduced-fat versions, do not be fooled. This offset in fat is usually compromised by a heavy salt content. Potted meats, popular in Europe, are grouped in this category, because they
not only add in more fat, they seal in the jar with a layer of fat to keep the air out, thus preserving them from spoilage. Potted meats conserve the most amounts of nutrients pound for pound, but are extremely high in the saturated-fat content, making this delicacy best left for only the occasional treat. Now that you have all of the facts on these tasty treats, leave them to just that, an occasional savory reward. Eating wisely means denying yourself nothing, but never forget to include common sense on the menu. H

The Many Sides of Bali Part I: “New Bali” By PAUL RUBIO Bali. The name alone parlays an image of tranquility, wanderlust, exoticism, and romanticism. It conjures visions of a far-off land, blessed with eternal natural beauty and time-honored culture. This island utopia, sandwiched between the Indian Ocean and the Bali Sea, captivated hoteliers more than three decades ago, who took the risk of developing property on a densely forested, volcanic sand beach in a village called Seminyak. It was difficult to predict then that, from the late seventies onward, a mad scramble for Bali’s coastline would ensue, desperately satiating the world’s growing appetite for sundrenched bliss and cultural tourism smack in the heart of the vast Indonesian archipelago. For village elders, modern day Bali is hardly recognizable in its highly globalized southernmost reaches. This area, dubbed “New Bali” by locals and expats alike, consists of the southern mainland and a small peninsula housing the highly popular and populated regions of Nusa Dua, Uluwatu, Jimbaran Bay, Kuta, Legian, and Seminyak. It is here where the majority of high-end tourism development continues, often delivering show-stopping flagship hotels and iconic resorts well worth the exhausting long haul. However, limiting an epic journey within “New Bali” or South Bali forgoes the essence of Southeast Asia’s island gem – “Traditional Bali,” which we’ll explore in the second and third part of this series. Anchored by the surfer hotspot, Kuta, South Bali has evolved as the archetypal holiday destination, catering to all budgets and lifestyles. While Kuta fulfills a niche for HOT Aussie backpackers living on $20/day, neighboring Seminyak and Legian house a mix of mid-range and
high-end accommodations to complement the world-class shopping, restaurant and nightlife scene that have advanced this highly touristic zone. Though not recommended as a standalone reason to visit Bali, all visitors invariably end up at Seminyak and Legian at some point on their journey, due to its proximity to the international airport or because they are eager to experience Indonesia’s most progressive metropolis equivalent. Big-city sophistication concentrates on this small stretch of dark volcanic sands, including obligatory sunset cocktails at the legendary and gay-friendly Ku De Ta or the worldly, rooftop SOS Supper Club, and dinner at the restaurant leading Bali’s foodie revolution, Sarong. Come late night, most of the bars, gay or otherwise, are located along Seminyak’s nightlife thoroughfare – Jalan Dyana Pura. Since the main gay club, Q Bar, closed down for repairs and has yet to set a reopening date, the gay scene tends to congregate on weekends at Bali Joe and Mixwell, with their wildly popular drag shows and campy pop music. There’s even a loose version of a gay beach in Seminyak, referred to as Taman Ganesha Beach or Petitenget Beach or Callego Beach (near the
Oberoi Hotel, in front of Callego Café). It’s not the nicest stretch of sand and you’ll hardly find more than a handful of wanderers also searching for this elusive gay beach. The main problem is that lounge chairs are prohibited on the beach; and the beach itself is dangerously rough, so there’s no reason to “hang out” on the beach more than a mere stroll or amble. In general, Bali’s definitely more of a couples’ than a singles’ destination, though gay Javanese guys often make the trek here to free themselves of the conservative confines of their home island. It’s a hotspot for Asian-Western gay couples living in Asia or gay westerners experiencing SE Asia, looking for some of the world’s coolest and eclectic hotels. Speaking of hotels, the all-suite Anantara Seminyak (online at bali.anantara.com), is ideal for a weekend jaunt immersed in “New Bali’s” young hustle, bustle, and evolving vanguard scene. The gregarious pool scene, the crowd, and the modern luxury design stand reminiscent of South Beach’s preeminent trendsetting hotels, with the added bonus of an outdoor Jacuzzi and daybed to watch Bali’s sunsets from the privacy of your own bal-
cony. With just 59 suites and stellar staff, the Anantara Seminyak delivers a more personalized, boutique version of its mammoth party-time neighbor, the W Retreat & Spa Bali (online at whotels.com/baliseminyak). Further afield, along the southernmost tip of the peninsula, The Banyan Tree Ungasan (banyantree.com), also flaunts an ultra-glam factor, about half an hour from the rapidly beating pulse of “New Bali.” The remarkable allvilla enclave straddles a picturesque precipice, emphasizing the perfect contemporary design blend of height, light, and space. While its sumptuous fusion of outdoors and indoors echoes a constant “wow” factor, one feature indisputably impresses the most – the glass-paneled doors opening directly onto each villa’s frangipani-fringed infinity pool. Finally, sagacious beach lovers gravitate towards Nusa Dua on the peninsula’s east side – one of the only spots on Bali to sport luscious, golden and white, downy sands. The superlative hotel here, Amanusa (amanresorts.com), towers over the manicured gardens and forest patches, perched on a hillside that offers stunning panoramas of sparkling greens and oceanic blues. Unlike Nusa Dua’s recent cookie-cutter construction, Amanusa’s 32 spacious villas retain a distinctive indigenous flair, each templelike structure complete with a full suite of luxury offerings, including the decadent outdoor shower and queen-sized bale, and private pool in nine suites. The quintessential relaxing “beach vacation” materializes over long, lazy days at Amanusa’s Beach Club, via the idyllic mingling of crystalline waters, impeccable service, and exclusivity.
