The What, Why and When By JAMES MICHAELS
We are now in the midst of autumn and when we think of this season, we think of the colors of fall: oranges, reds, yellows and white. Yes, white, as in White Party. The grandest of all circuit parties is held every Thanksgiving week. The White Party has become a huge international event drawing tens of thousands of the hottest guys in the United States and the world. The White Party was founded by fashion designer Frank Wager. Wager was asked to create a fundraiser for the thennew Health Crisis Network. The goal was to generate desperately needed funds to help combat a disease that was running rampant through the gay community. Wager and his committee of ten volunteers began working on “The White Party” concept. The all-white clothing theme was chosen by Wager because, as he said, “White
stands for purity. White is elegant, nonpolitical, non-combative and makes people look just plain beautiful.” As the planning continued, it became obvious that there were few venues in Dade County suitable for such an elegant event. Fellow committee member Jorge Suarez recommended Villa Vizcaya as a possibility since he was a member of The Vizcayans, a not-for-profit organization that helps raise funds for the continued restoration of the estate and its collections. The first White Party brought in of $16,000. In 1995, more events joined the White Party, including “The Victory Party” and “Muscle Beach.” In 1998, the Health Crisis Network merged with Community Research Initiative creating Care Resource and the White Party brought in over $2 million for their efforts. The White Party has become the
largest HIV/AIDS fundraiser in the world. With DJs and artists attending from all over the world, the music has come to be renowned and a central part of the party. White Party CDs have been produced since 1996. For over 24 years, the Villa Vizcaya Museum and Gardens set the backdrop of the elegant annual fundraiser. In the fall of 2010, due to increasing rental costs, it was decided that the 26th annual White Party Week, “Cirque Du Monde,” would be the final party held at that historic location with the event moving to the Miami Seaquarium in 2011. The White Party, the crown jewel of a weeklong series of fundraising events that make up the annual “White Party Week,” continues to generate hundreds of thousands of dollars to benefit Care Resource. ‘WHITE PARTY’ continues on Page 18

Transgendered Man Arrested for Injecting a Woman’s Buttocks with Cement MIAMI, FL – A man accused of injecting a woman's buttocks with a mix of cement and tyre inflater has been arrested. Oneal Ron Morris, 30, was detained in Miami on Friday and charged with practicing medicine without a license and causing serious bodily injury. The woman, who paid $700, later suffered with abdominal pain, infected sores and flu-like symptoms. Police photographs suggest that Oneal Morris may have had a similar procedure done on himself. Detectives describe Oneal Morris as a transgender man who dresses as a woman and claim he used a tube to inject a woman in several places on her buttocks. Her body was filled with a mixture that included cement, mineral oil and flat-tire sealant and the incisions were apparently sealed with superglue. Sergeant Bill Bamford, from Miami Gardens Police, said that when the pain had become too much Oneal Morris had told the woman: "Oh don't worry, you'll be fine. We just keep injecting you with the stuff and it all works itself out." The procedure originally took place in May 2010 and investigators have been looking for the suspect for more than a year. Police said the woman - who was referred to Oneal Morris by a friend ended up at Tampa General Hospital with life threatening symptoms, including pneumonia and a MRSA infection. "That cocktail had serious complications and serious effects on this young lady," said Sergeant Bamford. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has recently warned about the dangers of 'pumping parties', where people gather for cheap silicone injections in
body parts like the buttocks, breast or chin. It says that often those carrying out the procedures are not qualified and the conditions not sterile. Police believe there may be more victims and are urging any other possible victims to come forward. H

Court: Prop 8 Backers Can Defend It SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The California Supreme Court has ruled that the backers of California’s Proposition 8 have the standing to defend the proposition in court. The decision was made on behalf of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals who has asked for a decision. The 9th Circuit will now decide how it wishes to proceed. Proposition 8, formally known as the California Marriage Protection Act, was a ballot proposition and constitutional amendment passed in the November 2008 state elections. The measure added a new provision to the Declaration of Rights, to the California Constitution and provides that “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” In August of 2010, a district court struck down Prop 8 because California’s Governor and Attorney General declined to defend the law in federal court, but Prop 8′s sponsors stepped forward to do so. A federal appeals court took up the case, but put it on hold in order to ask the state’s highest court whether the sponsors have the legal right to bring the case. The state Supreme Court decision is an advisory opinion that will be sent to the federal appeals court. That court will then take the ruling under consideration and determine on its own whether it thinks the supporters have the legal standing to bring the case. H
Oklahoma City Council Adds Sexual Orientation to Protected Classes OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – Oklahoma City Councilman Ed Shadid’s measure to add sexual orientation to the protected classes in the city’s employment nondiscrimination policy won approval last week by a 7-2 vote. Gay and bisexual Oklahoma City employees and job applicants now have explicit protection against discrimination in city offices reported The Oklahoman. About 100 people packed the council chamber well in advance of the meeting. Usually only one or two dozen people come to watch or speak at the meetings, and those who come typically are concerned about an item on the agenda that affects their property. The number of speakers for and against the measure was about even. Speakers against the measure cited religion and opposition to adding a class not protected by federal or state law to the city’s policy as their reasons. Speakers for the measure generally spoke about a Continues on NEWS on Page 10

Moscow Authorities Propose Anti-Gay Bill for Minors MOSCOW, RUSSIA – Authorities in Moscow are proposing a bill that will outlaw the “promotion of homosexuality.” The bill would impose a fine for the promotion of gay “propaganda.” The bill follows legislation titled “The Promotion of Homosexuality, Lesbianism, and Transgenderism to Minors” in St. Petersburg Russia which passed on its first of three readings. Under the bill, anyone who committed “public acts” promoting homosexuality, bisexuality or transgender identity to minors could pay up to 3,000 rubles ($97.50) while an organization could pay 10,000 to 50,000 rubles. The bill gave no definition of a “public act” with activists saying it could be used to crack down on gay pride events which are regularly banned in Russia. H
Holland Requires Civil Servants to Perform Same-Sex Marriages AMSTERDAM, HOLLAND – Dutch members of Parliament have voted to stop civil servants from refusing to carry out gay weddings. Under current legislation, registrars can refuse to carry out a gay wedding if they are opposed on religious grounds. The ruling will require all authorities in the state to honor the rights of same-sex couples to marry throughout the country. H
San Diego Mayor Urges Congress to Overturn Defense of Marriage Act SAN DIEGO, CA – San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, a Republican whose decision in 2007 to drop his opposition to same-sex marriage, put him at odds with the GOP, has joined California Governor Jerry Brown and the mayors of Los Angeles and San Francisco, all Democrats, in urging Congress to overturn a law denying recognition of such marriages. According to the LA Times, Sanders, Brown, LA Mayor Antonio Villaragoisa and San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee signed a letter urging members of the Senate Judiciary Committee to advance legislation that would overturn the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Transgender Woman Goes Topless to Fight for Her Rights MORRISTOWN, TN – A transgender woman was arrested for indecent exposure in the Morristown, Tennessee driver’s license office parking lot after she took her shirt off to fight for equal rights. driver’s license. Jones, a transgender woman, had a partial sex change and says that was all the Social Security office needed to switch her paperwork from male to female. However, she says the Tennessee Department of Safety informed her she’d need more proof to make the same change on her driver’s license. According to the police report, when Jones’ request was denied, she decided to make a statement by taking her shirt off in the parking lot. Jones contends that as a “he,” he had the right to show his breasts in public. In response to her arrest, the Tennessee Department of Safety said they’ll change the sex on a license “if an applicant presents a doctor’s statement indicating that a full sex change has occurred and the procedure is complete.” H
rendered last week on charges that they conspired in a wide range of prisoner abuse, including scenarios in which one would act as a lookout while others assaulted inmates in their cells and threatened further harm to keep them quiet. According to the Pittsburgh PostGazette, the charges are the result of a grand jury investigation into the sexual and physical abuse of inmates at State Correctional Institution-Pittsburgh. The charges against the guards, all of whom have been suspended without pay, stem largely from the accusations of inmates who testified they were subjected to or witnessed the abuses and were threatened to keep quiet. Attorneys for the guards say their clients are innocent and called their inmate accusers' credibility into question. H
Palm Springs Reports Rise in Anti-Gay Hate Crimes
Two Gay Swimmers Qualify for Olympic Trials
PALM SPRINGS, CA – California hate crimes motivated by sexual orientation bucked a national trend and rose by 25% with the most dramatic shifts taking place in Palm Springs and San Francisco, both cities with significant gay and lesbian populations. According to California Watch, hate crimes motivated by sexual orientation jumped from three cases in 2009 to 14 in 2010. San Francisco recorded six incidents in 2009 and 24 in 2010. Rhonda Long, administrative services officer for the Palm Springs Police Department, said she could not explain the uptick in cases without looking at them individually. Long said the department was taking steps to prevent hate crimes in the community. The Palm Springs Police Department said it has been rebuilding its image within the gay community since a 2009 scandal. Palm Springs Police Chief David Dominguez retired in January after he was accused of and admitted to making insensitive comments during a sex sting operation in 2009 targeting gay men who officers believed were having sex in a public park restroom. Officers arrested 19 people in the operation. H
OMAHA, NE – According to OutSports, two openly gay swimmers have become two of the three oldest swimmers to ever qualify for the U.S. Olympic trials. Federal Workers May Get Full Benefits WASHINGTON, DC – Two US senators have introduced a bill which, if approved, would permit same-sex partners of Federal employees to be eligible for health benefits and long-term care. The Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act was introduced to the senate by Senators Joeseph Lieberman and Susan Collins. The two senators also led the fight to repeal the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. Gay federal employees and their partners would be subject to the same standards that apply to married federal workers, including anti-nepotism rules and financial disclosure requirements. H
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – Last weekend, organizers announced that the 33year-old Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras will be renamed dropping the “Gay and Lesbian” part. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the event also has a new logo and a new message of inclusiveness that organizers admit could alienate traditional supporters. The organizers insist that the heart of the annual festival remains gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex people, but now the Mardi Gras is inviting any and all comers who wanted to celebrate diversity and ”the right to be.” They hope that reaching out will rejuvenate the event, which has failed to attract younger people and has lost relevance in its core community. They also acknowl-

edge that long-standing supporters might feel the new approach would water down the event's celebration of sexual difference but said the Mardi Gras had to evolve with its community. H
Baptist Church Takes Stand for Gay Marriage RALEIGH, NC – Last weekend, the Pullen Memorial Baptist Church voted to prohibit the church’s pastor from legally marrying anyone until she can legally marry same-sex couples under North Carolina law. The congregation said that the language of a proposed state constitutional amendment against same-sex marriage discriminates against same-sex couples by denying them the rights and privileges enjoyed by heterosexual married couples, the Raleigh News Observer reported. H
Teen Killer Agrees to Plea Deal VENTURA, CA – According to the Los Angeles Times, the Oxnard teen who shot a gay classmate he believed was flirting with him has agreed to spend the next 21 years in prison, a plea deal that ends a case that drew national attention and ignited debate on how schools should deal with openly gay students. Brandon McInerney, who was 14 when he pulled a gun out of his backpack and shot Larry King twice in the head in 2008, has already served nearly four years in jail and would be released by the time he is 38, under terms of the deal. McInerney’s first trial ended with jurors split between convicting him of voluntary manslaughter and first-degree murder. Several of the jurors have since spoken in favor of a plea bargain, in order to avoid a second trial. During the first trial, prosecutors portrayed McInerney as a budding white supremacist who hated homosexuals and was enraged by King's sexuality and aggressive flirtations. The defense argued that McInerney was the product of a violent and dysfunctional home and had reached an emotional breaking point in response to King's advances. A national gay rights group later said prosecutors should have done the “just and merciful thing” and reached a plea deal in the case. “Brandon McInerney killed Larry King and should go to jail for his crime,” said Eliza Byard, executive director of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network. "However, the first trial subjected everyone – especially Larry and Brandon's peers – to a painful spectacle that accomplished nothing." At trial, several teachers testified that King had become increasingly bold in his behavior in the weeks before the shooting. One of the teachers, Jill Eckman, demanded that administrators do something about rising tensions but was told to teach tolerance for King's gender expression. H

Pink Picket Fences A white picket fence has long been the symbol of the “American Dream.” The iconic image has always been seen as a symbol of home ownership, success, achievement and pure happiness. We all know what makes up the lifestyle that plays out behind that perfect picket facade. The perfect parents – the gainfully employed dad and the Suzie homemaker mom; the boy who plays football and the girl who is on the honor roll; school runs and soccer practice; the cat, the dog and the station wagon – symbols all of unabashed upper-middle class perfection and achievement. This image has been seen as largely unattainable for the gay community, who couldn’t marry or adopt or felt there was a glass ceiling in their job because they didn’t have a wife or a husband to complement the family ethos of a company. Yet, the fight for equality shows us that this is the dream of many gay men and women; everyone wants success, and many want a family. Fortunately, times have changed. Now more than ever before, this ideal lifestyle is not only a possibility, but also a reality for many gay couples right here in South Florida. Gay people can aspire to such a dream as a symbol of equality and acceptance in addition to the core values seen in achieving a picket-fence lifestyle. Yet as the community continues to take steps towards equal rights, rights to adopt, to marry and so forth, can the white picket fence model work for the gay community? In the 50s, the pop art image of a family in perfect suburbia was sold through everything from Coca-Cola to laundry detergent. Yet it didn’t show what happened behind closed doors. Without question as the nation became more open minded, so too did attitudes. As a result, people began to realize that behind the façade of a white picket fence, there were all-too-often big deep-seated issues. Infidelity, abuse, financial strain from keeping up with the Joneses – you name
it, all playing out behind closed doors. As our community moves towards the perceived ideal, how much of it can be translated to a gay couple? Die-hards would argue all of it. I say you can’t put a square peg in a round hole. First, I think people need to realize is there is a reason why the white picket fence lifestyle is called a dream; very few people live that life anymore, or probably never did. Divorce is acceptable, the economy has changed and so too have demographics. It is becoming more acceptable for women to not want to have children, while more couples are making up their own rules as they go. Gay people have to do the same. As more and more laws and policies slowly come down, the reality is gay couples have more freedom to make their own rules as well.
People – gay, straight or otherwise – need to know that to make it work inside that perfect home as well as it does on the outside, you have to be realistic. Equal rights are one thing, but the dynamics of gay relationships are different from straight ones. I know people don’t like to hear that, but it is ridiculous to suggest otherwise. Two men or two women together have a totally different dynamic from a man and woman. As the rights are granted, people need to tailor their dreams. They can still have children and a station wagon and the house and the fence, but to make a relationship work, you need to be sensitive to the differences your relationship has. I am reminded of the remake of “Stepford Wives.” Having the gay characters really brought the movie up to date. Yet having
Letters to the Editor In response to the editor’s opinion “Marriage? Get Real!” in the Florida Agenda, November 10, 2011. DEAR EDITOR, Thank you for your piece on the sanctity of marriage, you hit the nail on the head! We are happy to watch the desecration of the institution of marriage on tv, yet apparently we as a community cant take part. We aren’t perfect just like everyone else, so why shouldn’t we have the right to get married for 72 days in a multi-million dollar wedding and divorce. To be honest, divorce maybe a factor but I think celebrities are the biggest threat to marriage, look at the cover of any magazine and there is always some cheating spouse, I’m not saying by any stretch that gay people don’t cheat,

Alex Vaughn the more flamboyant of the couple seen as the wife, just shows the stereotype. As the film suggests that should be exactly as he is perceived – the perfect “woman” of the relationship. Yet, in the movie, becoming a Stepford wife doesn’t turn him into a woman, or a homemaker, but into a republican political power house in a navy suit. When you look at this, you can see that society in the “perfect” picket fence world wouldn’t accept him as a wife, a stay at home, look after the house and kids figure, but only as a man’s man. This is extremely interesting to me. In the original film, the women were turned into the 50s housewife models and that’s the premise of the story. Yet, in the updated version, the gay couple they couldn’t let him remain effeminate and flamboyant. He had to be turned into the perfect husband. This is the reality that many gay couples will face when setting up their perfect homes in little communities, so what can they do? Simple. Make your own rules. It’s not a gay/straight thing; it’s a simple reality of today’s society. Couples have to make their own rules up to stay together. I strongly believe that to even get close to that ideal you have to know yourself, how much of that world do you want to be part of. Sure there are always jokes that one partner is the wife and the other husband, but can that really translate in your relationship? If you do have kids, is it safe or acceptable to have them in a community of faux perfection or better to raise them in the more open big cities? Where will you be accepted? Where will your kids be accepted? These are the more pertinent questions, and I am not saying that people don’t think of them, all I am saying is that don’t be fooled by a lifestyle that isn’t real, or you may find yourself a desperate housewife. Remember a fence is just a fence. It is your life. Paint it whatever color you want. Just make sure it matches your true lifestyle or it will become a prison. H

but so what if we do? We can’t do anything worse for marriage than the straights are doing! SINCERELY, L. DAVID In response to the opinion, “Trans Relativity” in the Florida Agenda, November 17, 2011. DEAR EDITOR, I would like to thank Rajindra for shining a light on the fact that trans people have a history. I didn’t know that and feel blessed to know that we aren’t alone, and have just as much right to exist in society as everyone else. I hope that her piece reaches schools
and the government so that people will not only understand that being trans is not a choice, but that we have been in place, and were accepted in society hundreds of years ago. People need to be educated. It takes a brave person to come forward and to shine that light to guide others in finding truth, I applaud Rajindra for doing this. Thank You! SINCERELY, ANGEL GUETTERA “THANK YOU” for all your wonderful letters over the past year. Keep them coming! Who Knew? Candida and Thrush Two Words You Should Know and Avoid By SAM KNEW, MSW
Those of you who read this column regularly may tend to be surprised by what you learn. I like to think this is done with a combination of statistical science and wit (if I say so myself). But occasionally I find myself challenged to find the balance between tasteful humor and knowledge. This is one of those times. With that in mind, you may prefer to enjoy your morning coffee and bagel before reading on. We are talking about yeast infections here, so get set. Most of us think that yeast infections (Candida) are primarily a female problem. It may surprise you, however, to learn that men can also contract or develop yeast infections. Penile, anal and yes, oral, are all types of yeast
infections in men. Most commonly, penile yeast infections among men are transmitted sexually, normally after sex with a carrier female, which makes it surprising that yeast infections are not considered a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Men who engage in vaginal sex with an infected female partner can pass the infection to anyone (male or female). This is one means of the spread of the infection (anally and orally). The rate of infection is higher among uncircumcised men since the foreskin can trap in moisture. General symptoms of penile infection are identified as itching (similar to jock itch), burning during sex and urination, soreness, and redness of the tip of the penis. Some men may also experience a white, clumpy discharge (not to be mistaken for semen). Anal infection symptoms are usually isolated to itchiness and redness. Men who also engage in unprotected anal sex (even with an uninfected partner) may develop an infection. This can occur when bacteria in feces comes into contact with the penis, (another reason to
avoid that “not so fresh” feeling). Oral infection (thrush) is usually recognized by white patches covering the inside of the mouth. Patches may be on the insides of the cheeks, tongue, roof of the mouth, and lips and gums as it spreads. Partners performing oral sex on uncircumcised men are at greater risk, again due an increased likelihood of trapped bacteria. Additional means of infection among men include the prolonged use of antibiotics and men with compromised immune systems. Antibiotics do not discriminate between bad and good bacteria, thus creating an ideal environment for the infection to cultivate. In addition, diabetic individuals are also likely to develop yeast infections due to high levels of sugar in the body – specifically in urine. Fortunately, prevention and treatment for all these types of yeast infections are fairly simple. Your own personal hygiene is always a good place to start. Also, try being mindful to wash any areas of the body that can trap moisture (foreskin) and remember to completely dry these
areas. Severe cases in partners can be identified easily, especially if you are taking the time to playfully “inspect.” Usually treatment includes a week-long regimen of topical cream and abstinence, the latter perhaps being the most difficult of the two. H

Snowbiz Now!
Modern-day Shaman By NiChOlAS SNOW R. Angelo Pezzote, MA, NCC, LMHC, LMFT, RPh, is based in Miami but demonstrates a worldwide commitment to healing. This manifests itself in an advice column, pod casts, workshops and lectures, and in his private psychotherapy practice. His book, “Straight-Acting – Gay Men, Masculinity, and Finding True Love,” has touched many, including yours truly. Not only is Angelo filled with courage, strength and hope, he guides others in experiencing the same. He is, in fact, a modern-day shaman who has also been my friend for many years. “In the words of Ernest Holmes,” Angelo quoted, “you can change your life by changing your thinking. Unless you change your thoughts, words and actions today, your tomorrows will continue to play reruns of your yesterdays.” Angelo speaks from experience. He describes the single greatest motivator of his life as, “My pain. Out of the many painful losses in my life, I was forged into the person I am. Through the challenges in my life – childhood abuse, significant money loss, love of my life loss, and the like – I discovered natural love and joy at my core. I was cracked open, raw, and somehow through that, compassion emerged. I realized nothing else really mattered.” Angelo put his pain into practice. “Over the years, I realize my patients don’t need distant, cold, fancy, intelligent, clinical interventions from me,” he said. “What they need from me is to treat them while loving them, agape style, non-sexually and safely, so they can heal their gripe with humanity. That’s what this work is fundamentally about – healing heart to heart, soul to soul.” “It is done unto you as you believe,” Angelo explained. “When you believe something, you get set in your ways over time. Eventually you get hypnotized, only accepting incoming information that supports your belief, ignoring evidence of the contrary. Since your beliefs filter your experience that way, your reality is influenced by what you believe. Life is a mirror, whereby your experiences are reflections of your beliefs. Nothing in your life changes until you are willing to change your beliefs.” “Leading physicists say that the underlying fabric of the universe is a field of endless possibilities,” Angelo continued, “existing simultaneously, suspended in a sort of quantum matrix with no location or state of being, until something occurs that locks one of the possibilities into place. That something is consciousness. So modern physicists concur with the central message – your thoughts collapse actuality from possibility.” Okay. Do what I did. Read this paragraph again. “There are two main steps that help alter your beliefs, thoughts and feelings to get more of what you want out of life,”

Word Play Old Habits Never Die, They Just Get Tired By ChriStiAN AlExANdEr
Angelo elaborated. First, “No matter how many times old thought patterns and negative core beliefs return, don’t give them attention. Be persistent.” Second, Angelo continued, “Consistently generate positive thoughts even if you don’t believe what you are saying at first.” He gives examples: “Life is good. I am happiness right here and right now. I am whole, perfect and complete. I am love. Something good is going to happen to me. The right people are coming into my path.
“You may notice when you start to use this positive psychology that negative thoughts and feelings will come on even more strongly,” advised Angelo. “Don’t worry. That’s just resistance. They won’t go without a fight, so give them one. Ultimately the negativity will die out and you will be left in the joy, peace and love of consciousness. Remember, the steps are most effective when used as a daily practice. This requires conviction, discipline and patience. It’s not something to try for three days and give up on.” Profoundly, Angelo revealed, “It’s how you love that counts. You could say I was reduced to ash and like the Phoenix rose up out of the flames and recreated myself anew. It was ‘die in my protective isolation chamber’ or ‘find a better way to live in the world.’ I chose life and the only other path I could – love. It took being shattered, rocked to my foundation, to annihilate my protective defenses, open my heart, and love all out. I learned that no one could end my misery but me. And no one could love me like I could love myself.” People throughout the world are responding to Angelo where he’s at – at www.AskAngelo.com. Thanks, Angelo, for your service to humanity. H

It’s just another Thursday in an otherwise unremarkable week. As per my routine, I’m wearing a pair of sweat pants complete with bleach stains and a drawstring waist sans the string, a ratty T-shirt with a hole in it and I have my pink rubber gloves on that I wear when cleaning the bathroom. I have a bandana wrapped on my head ala some 50s housewife in curlers. My face is covered with a clay masque, which followed an exfoliating masque and which itself will be followed by a soothing green tea masque. Why am I sharing the mundane details of my cleaning and grooming habits? Because I’ve often wondered if anyone else’s weekend routine started the day before the actual night out and if it were as complex as mine. After the house has been vacuumed, dusted and scrubbed and my face has been plucked, sucked and sandblasted, it’s time for wardrobe selection. I can’t just throw on any old thing. Wardrobe needs to be appropriate for the venue, with whom you are going, mood and so forth. I spent my formative early gay years with the lesser celebrity “jet set” in New York City. Every night was a party, a fundraiser, or some new club and there was an unspoken dress code. The velvet ropes carefully keeping the crowds out of certain night spots were not just there to hold people back and let the “right” people in. Those ropes and the guards behind them were centurions with a flair for fashion and an eye for the “it” people. There they stood, ear pieces in, clip-boards in hand practically motionless except for their eyes which were constantly scanning the crowd to make sure who shouldn’t be waiting wasn’t. I’m not ashamed to say that, way back when, I myself was in with the “right” crowd. It may seem shallow and superficial, but damned if I didn’t have some fabulous times. When I moved to my beloved Fort Liquordale, wardrobe proved to be just
as important. The right clothes for the right clubs and, I’ll admit, also I needed to plan the “right” substances I’d be doing that evening (I no longer use or approve of the use of illicit drugs, As my readers know, I’ve made some mistakes in the past and I’ve paid very dearly for them). South Beach, Oy! Now that was always crazy. I’d have to start prepping on a Wednesday because a new outfit had to be bought. When surrounded by men built like Abercrombie and Fitch models, who you knew would be shirtless in 12 minutes and when you’re pretty much a thin, average boy – you just had to have a designer on your ass. Now, every time I get ready, I find myself staring blankly the same rack of clothing, hoping something I haven’t worn before would magically appear, unless of course I’d been shopping, and naturally I can never decide what to wear on the first try. Could I squeeze into those jeans that I haven’t worn in two years but used to look so good? After a struggle of epic proportions, I find that horray, they fit well as long as I don’t breath, put anything in my pockets or have to bend over. So off they come. After several failed attempts and growing tired of looking in the mirror, I decide on the basic black suit that I was thinking about wearing in the first place anyway. Having accomplished what I had to do, I bring my essentials (tranquilizer, my teddy bear and the remote control) to bed. I lie in my bed and stare at the television, my thoughts ranging from should I repaint the living room to whether or not I should wear a little eyeliner tomorrow. Yet as tomorrow arrives, and after all the work of bearing the production of going out, I decide I am too tired, instead I settle for an evening with the TV and go to bed! “Welcome to middle age.” Maybe now, I’ll buy different pairs of “designer” sheets! How to Protect Yourself in this Uncertain Economy
By AJ CROSS This week’s column is a celebration of laughter. Margaret Cho always says, “If we can’t laugh at ourselves, then fu*k it.” Here are my TOP 10 gay jokes from various sources. It’s hard to find clean gay jokes. I hope they lighten up your day.
#10 What do you call 50 lesbians and 50 republican in a room? 100 people that don’t do d*ck!
#9 What do gay men and ambulances have in common? They both get loaded from the rear and go whoo-whoo!
#8 What did one gay sperm say to another? “How do we find an egg in all of this sh*t?"
#7 How do you fit four gay guys on a bar stool? Flip it over.
#6 Why do so many lesbians join the army? They saw the recruitment ad about being in the bush.
#5 Why don’t gays work at sperm banks? They always get fired for drinking on the job!
#4 How do you know if you're at a gay picnic? The hotdogs taste like sh*t!

#3 A gay man went to the ER because he had a vibrator stuck up his a*s. The ER Doctor took a look and said “Don’t worry; I’ll have it out in no time.” “Don’t do that,” said the gay man. “What do you want me to do?” asked the doctor. The gay man said “Change the batteries,” duh!
#2 Billy the very gay flight attendant announced to the passengers, “We will be landing the plane shortly, lovely people, so if you could just put up your trays that would be fab.” He noticed that a rather exotic-looking woman hadn't moved a muscle. “Perhaps you didn't hear me over those big engines. I asked you to raise your tray for landing.” She calmly said, “In my country, I am called a Princess. I take orders from no one.” Billy replied, without missing a beat, "Well, sister, in my country, I'm called a Queen, so I outrank you. Tray-up b*tch!"
#1 3 men are bragging about their sons. Man #1 says, “I’m proud of my son because he is a Doctor and is making so much money that he just bought a brand new BMW. Man #2 says. “I’m proud of my son because he is a Lawyer and just bought a house in the Hamptons. Man #3 says, “I’m not too proud of my son because he’s a fag, but hey at least he’s got a new BMW and a house in the Hamptons. H
There is no doubt that we are still feeling the effects of “the 2008 melt down.” While the recession may have ended in the United States, it is anything but over in Europe, creating continuing world economic turmoil. Many investors are still extremely wary of US banks and investment firms because it is nearly impossible to know what actual exposure to European debt is among the domestic banking industry. This has created a culture of fear that is driving the markets. In 2008, the investment banks said that CDO’s were safe and that they were properly hedged. However, most investors at the time had never heard of a credit swap default. This is a kind of insurance policy, unregulated and created by AIG. Another example is Morgan Stanley. That investment house has $30 billion in exposure to French banks alone. These French banks, in turn, could easily go under if the financial crisis in Greece and Italy is not resolved. If Italy and Greece collapses, their downfall could very likely impact the economies of Ireland, Portugal, and Spain. Since we don’t know how Morgan Stanley is hedging its investments, we don’t have definitive answers. Hopefully it is through secured collateral. They may, however, be using collateral credit swaps. Sound familiar? Now if Morgan Stanley and other US banks are using CCS’s to hedge bets with European banks, we would be in another bail-out situation. However, before that could happen, the global markets would suffer
huge losses. That, in turn, would mean that your 401k, IRA, and stock portfolio would likely suffer losses as a direct result. As if you haven’t lost enough already. So what can you do to protect yourself ? Well, first off you need to hedge yourself. The best way to do this is to move a portion of your investments into products that do not risk your principle. Some examples are CD’s, annuities and treasury bonds. Unfortunately, these types of investments don’t yield high returns. However, I am sure you agree, it is better to gain a little and have no losses. The second thing you must do is vote. Any candidate that is in favor of repealing Dodd-Frank has the banks interests as their primary concern and not the interests of people like you. Dodd-Frank is the only safe-guard against letting Wall Street police itself. Wall Street bankers have one misson only and that is make money for themselves and their firms. The notion that they are jobs creators is insane. One could argue they are driven solely by year-end bonuses. If you want protect your future, I suggest you follow my advice. H

The Parliament House A Venue of Frolics, Fun and Follies By Christian alexander I was in desperate need of some time off. But where to go on the spur of the moment? The Parliament House in Orlando sprang to mind (as did Tahiti, but I’m on a budget now) to take in the shows, do a little dance, make a little love and basically “get down” all weekend seemed to be in order. I informed the front desk that I would be doing a story for the Florida Agenda and had the good fortune to be given the name of the man who could facilitate my needs, Mr. Michael Wanzie, the Theatrical Producer/Sales and Events Coordinater. He is the wizard behind the curtain that helps make the Foot Light Theatre more enjoyable than a trip to Oz. I was given the full “red-carpet” treatment. Michael took time out of his whirlwind schedule to give me a guided tour of all the amenities and was just an allaround pleasure to meet. I came to refer to him as the “go to guy.” He also, in his capacity of Event’s Coordinator, is in the process of putting together his very own spoof of “A Christmas Carol.” If you have a free weekend, I highly recommend it. Everyone at the Parliament House is
friendly and welcoming, I am, however, going to focus on three people who made my stay just a little more extraordinary. I would like to thank the entire staff for an incredible weekend – with a special note to the FootLight Players, all of whom are an absolute inspiration. The cast has all been there several years and work together with the efficiency of a Broadway production. It was my misfortune to have missed the legendary talent of Darcel Stevens, the usual Mistress of Ceremonies, but my great pleasure to witness the tornado of talent that embodies the form of Carol Lee. It bears mentioning that both Darcel and Carol Lee have been with the theatre for approximately 12 years and yet I still noticed something of a family environment backstage, which I believe helps set them apart from other shows. Now unto Carol Lee and myself. At some point between shows, Carol Lee took the time with me to sit down and talk, and I grew more fond of her as we spoke. Having grown up in the small town of Fort Wayne, Indiana, she knew that she always “marched to the beat of a differ-
ent drummer” as she graciously put it,from an early age. We chatted about this and that, her incredibly hectic schedule of seven different shows (I still can’t even imagine that) each weekend as well as her day job (which I will not mention here, but is quite impressive). When I inquired as to what made her do it all, she simply stated (with a somewhat sly look on her face), “a girl’s got to eat and it’s not like I’m out digging ditches. I’m playing with make-up and putting on a dress.” When I asked her what her inspiration for entertaining was, we had a bit of an “Oprah” moment. She tried holding back some tears and told me the story of her Grandmother. This amazing woman was apparently the strength from whom Carol Lee draws her and she told me her Grandmother had a favorite quote. “If I had made it to Hollywood first, no one would have ever heard of Ethel Merman.” After having sat down with Carol Lee, I believe that to be absolutely true. And then there is that Master of Mixology, Derek. At some point during the blissful madness of the weekend, I
chanced upon yet another heart of gold. I’ll admit, I was first drawn to his looks. But as we conversed, I found him to be intelligent, witty and especially kind. He works in the Bear Den--not my usual choice, but hey, it was a vacation and it was right next door to the antique shop (which, is an absolute MUST). My best friend and I quickly laid claim to the pool table and I would go up to chat with Derek between games and order more cocktails. We actually got to know each other a little bit, and he was absolutely amazing! He has been with the Parliament House for about 2½ years and had nothing but good things to say about it. He pours a mean cocktail once he knows what you like. A word of caution: look, but don’t touch, girls. He’s off limits for the time being! When all was said and done, I had the most exquisite time that’s allowed by law and I suggest you treat yourself to a good time as well by venturing up to the Parliament House. Between the live entertainment and the more than delicious staff, a good time is had by all – guaranteed. H Photos courtesy, The Parliament House
The FootLight Players perform on the main pool stage The dance floor is always packed!
No matter the theme, the Parliament House always puts on a great show!

The Many Sides of Bali Part II: The Rich Interior By PAUL RUBIO Found along the island’s east coast and deep in its interior, the area known as “Traditional Bali” captures the island’s timeless spirit, still flourishing in today’s globalized world and unwavering in its cultural foundations. It is here, far removed from the chaos of the modern world, where you’ll lose yourself in the heartfelt hospitality of daily village life, the rewarding treks through rice fields, the burgeoning indigenous arts and craft scene, the odalan ceremonies held at Bali’s “1000 temples” and the pilgrimages to reach them. This is the Bali of fairytales and coffee table books, a land of spiritual awakenings and an invitation to journey to a time bygone. Coastal brilliance notwithstanding, the country’s rich interior is the pinnacle of the island’s aesthetic and ethnic grandeur. The city of Ubud and its proximate villages showcase the island’s living culture, where eclectic artists interpret the modernization of traditional living, where esteemed Balinese architecture abounds, where village elders trek through the gates of mountaintop luxu-
ry hotels to fetch holy water from the temples below, and where the Agung River breathes life into all who grow around her. A seamless amalgamation of alternating levels of dense forest and rice terraces – an unwavering landscape of everlasting vertical and horizontal greens – this is the Bali of legends, the realization of wanderlust and life experience. Within this sphere of Zen, it is possible to reside either in the heart of the cultural action or on the periphery, engrossed in the natural environment. The centrally located, luxury boutique hotel, Uma Ubud (uma.ubud.como.bz), and the more lavish Amandari (amanresorts.com) lie in the epicenter of Ubud’s prolific arts scene. Both boast the full throttle Eat, Pray, LOVE Ubud experience and are a short drive from renowned yoga centers, cooking schools, and convivial villages where healers, wood carvers, and silversmiths carry on the customs of generations past. A bit further afield, the COMO Shambhala Estate (cse.como.bz) is the evergreen of
Ubud inspiration and enlightenment, providing breathtaking backdrops, utter luxury, and outlets for physical stimulation, combining for an end product of unparalleled mental invigoration. Organized as 3, 5, and 7-day wellness programs, the personal sojourn at COMO Shambhala Estate begins with a consultation from the in-house Aryuvedic doctor, who prepares a bespoke itinerary for time spent at The Estate. Days alternate between spa treatments, hilltop yoga and Pilates classes, jungle treks, and unapologetic relaxation, interspersed by guiltless indulgence in innovative organic meals and revitalizing juices. The suggested structure leaves ample time for a cathartic journey of self, where getting lost around the 23-acre estate and exploring the natural spring pools hugging the mountain’s edge, delighting in the sounds and sights of nature at the riverbank, reflecting on personal achievement, or testing physical fitness at the bonafide “jungle gym” are all options. Accommodations are structured as five
luxury “residences” and five “retreat villas,” with the full gamut of haute resort offerings showcased through individualistic motifs like fire, water, and earth. For example, Tejasuara or “Sound of Fire” is a residence where understated design flawlessly tempers the darkness of the dominant Sumba stone and black bamboo, illuminated by the fire pit that burns beside the sparkling infinity pool. Indeed, it seems ironic that an island celebrated for its coastal majesty boasts some of its greatest treasures inland. In fact, Bali’s fortunes are everywhere – superbly distributed over its vast volcanoes, lush mountains, and its remote and crowded beaches where timeless villages and show-stopping resorts co-exist in harmony. This multi-faceted island has evolved as a land of diverse escapism, ripe with endless opportunity for adventure, vacation, and self-reflection in the presence of living history and natural wonder. Redefining South Beach Expectations – Rosa Mexicano Sobe A Festive Atmosphere & Award-winning Mexican Cuisine By JUDY PAYNE
jean’s kitchen
applauded them for introducing New Yorkers to a “hitherto unfamiliar, elevated version of Mexican cuisine.” Most recently they redefined expectations in South Beach with authentic Mexican cooking in a stylish space and festive atmosphere. On a recent visit we started out with Flautas de Pollo ($9.00), three rolled crispy chicken tacos with salsa pasilla de Oaxaca, salsa verde, queso fresco and crema. For our main courses we enjoyed the Filite con Hongos ($28.50), a filet Mignon covered with a wild mushroom and tequila cream sauce and the Chile Ancho Relleno ($22.50), two ancho chiles stuffed with slow cooked marinated pork served over a black bean sauce and marinated red onions. Having thoroughly enjoyed dinner we pressed on and for dessert we loved the Churros Rellenos ($7.50), hot Mexican doughnuts filled with caramel and raspberry sauces, dusted with sugar and cinnamon and served with chocolate sauce for dipping! Ossobuco
Ossobuco means “bone with a hole” in Italian. It is usually eaten with polenta or mashed potatoes. My favorite is with pastas. After all, it is an Italian dish. The garnish on this dish is a “Persillade” which is a mixture of parsley, garlic, and oil, and sometimes vinegar, lemon juice or zest. • ¼ cup olive oil • Enough flour to coat your veal • 1 bouquet garni • 4 1½ -inch-thick slices of veal hind shank • 2 tablespoons butter • 1 cup onion chopped • ½ cup carrot chopped • ½ cup celery chopped fine • 1 teaspoon garlic chopped • 1 bottle dry white wine • 1 can Italian plum tomatoes, chopped with juice • 1 cube beef broth • 1 cube chicken broth Pat the veal shanks dry with paper towels to remove any excess moisture, they brown better when they’re dry. Secure the meat to the bone with kitchen twine. Season each shank with salt and freshly ground pepper, and dredge the shanks in flour, shaking off the excess. In a thick assed pot heat the olive oil until it smokes. Add veal to the hot oil and sauté until brown, about 3 minutes a side, then transfer the veal to a platter. In the same pot, add the butter and sauté the onion, carrot, celery and chopped garlic over a medium heat. Cook for about 3 to 4 minutes. Then add the wine (One quarter of
the bottle should do; you have the rest; you are the chef !) and reduce it by simmering it while scraping the browning residues stuck to the bottom and sides loose with a wooden spoon. Add the chopped tomatoes with their juice, the bouquet garni and both stocks to the pot and bring to a simmer. Return the veal to the pot and cook for about 2 hours or until the meat feels very tender when prodded with a fork and a creamy sauce has formed. If, while the Ossobuco is cooking, the liquid in the pot becomes insufficient, add a little water, as needed. The level of cooking liquid should always be about 3/4 the way up the shank. You should have more than enough. I like fresh tagliatelle with my Ossobuco. That way I can sop up all that delicious sauce. Finish with chopped garlic, parsley and lemon zest. H

Situated at the west end of Lincoln Road in the 1111 building, Rosa Mexicano South Beach provides a warm and vibrant setting for award-winning authentic Mexican cuisine. The illuminated electric-blue tiled water wall features an intriguing array of illuminated figures and candles set among cascading water that brings a vibrant and seductive feel to the main dining room. Warm terracottas and yellows enhanced with colorful accents are featured throughout the restaurant as well as traditional, one-of-a-kind Mexican crafts, fabrics and artwork. This combination creates the perfect backdrop for the festive atmosphere and innovative Mexican cuisine of Rosa Mexicano. Rosa Mexicano was originally guided by the vision of Chef Christian Plotczyk and Culinary Director David Suarez. All of the award-winning Rosa Mexicano dishes remain faithful to their traditional roots while incorporating regional accents and inspired innovation. You’ll experience that first hand when you try the Pomegranate Margaritas ($9.75) or Guacamole en Molcajete ($14.00), made in a traditional lava-rock mortar and prepared tableside. Bigger, Beefier Biceps By Christmas! By TOM BONANTI Over the past few weeks, I have received several requests from clients and avid readers of Mark Magazine and the Florida Agenda to write a column on how to get bigger biceps. Since biceps are the smallest muscles of the anterior upper body, they are the easiest to work and develop almost immediately. They are also a favorite to show off and flex, not that anyone I know would ever be into such a shallow display of vanity. Anyway, here’s the lowdown on how to get bulging beefier biceps by Christmas! First, if you want to put on size, do free-weight exercises. Using barbells, E-Z curl bars, and dumbbells will give you a better chance to take your biceps through their full range of motion and fill out the muscle bellies. Hit biceps twice a week employing three different exercises using 3-4 sets of 8-12 reps. Second, I never work biceps on the same day that I work the back, because by the time you’ve really exhausted lats and traps, etc. you’re not going to give biceps your all. Try working shoulders with biceps because neither muscle group suffers with that combination. Third, make sure to lift using proper form as with training any muscle group, to prevent injury. Don’t try to lift too much weight or do too many reps. Fourth, stretching helps bring out the separation and detail in a muscle beside being great for your whole body. Stretch briefly before your workout, periodically between sets, and always afterward. Here are four sure-fire bicep exercises. Standing barbell curls are the king of all bicep-building exercises. With you feet hip width apart and your knees slightly bent, take a shoulder width grip on a barbell or E-Z curl bar and then fully extend both arms in front of you. Keep your abs tight and back straight. When you start the exercise use a hinge
motion, keeping the areas from your shoulders to your elbows locked so that the only movement taking place is from your elbows to your wrists. Bring the weighted bar up to your chest, and then return the weight along the same path in one smooth, continuous motion. Perform this exercise without rocking or swinging your shoulders and back. This exercise is a sure way to take bi’s through their full range of motion. Alternate dumbbell curls allow you to give each bicep its due. Perform the movement sitting erect on a bench and first curling one dumbbell up to your chin; then, as you lower it, curl the other arm. Lower slowly and don’t swing the weights up with any added motion. Preacher or Scott curls are my favorite way to isolate bi’s. Adopt a position with your arms over a preacher (Scott) bench. Hold either a barbell or a pair of dumbbells. Curl up to the chin, and then lower slowly – without bouncing or jerking. Under-grip close-hand chin ups are a terrific biceps building exercise with a difference. Instead of the arm moving from the body, your body gets curled toward the arm. Grasp an overhead horizontal bar with an under grip so that your pinkies are 6-12 inches apart. Start from “dead hang” position with arms entirely straight, pull upwards until your chin is above the bar. There you have it – the ammo you need to load those guns to the max! For more tips on how to develop bigger arms, contact TrainertomB@aol.com.
