According to Billie’s wishes, he will be buried at sea. At press time, there were no details available for his memorial service. “Billy was a colorful individual and really enjoyed his life. I spent many hours listening to his stories of his hey-days working on Miami Beach during the city’s hay days, when blacks had to be off the beach after 6 p.m. and serving cocktails to the likes of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Lucille Ball and a host of other entertainment giants. I would bet he is now with them, serving up some fabulous drink concoctions.” – Brad Casey H

JOEI is modeled after HRC’s Corporate Equality Index and Healthcare Equality Index, and measures LGBT-inclusion at Jewish nonprofit organizations. HRC first announced the formation of JOEI in January 2011. Shortly thereafter, HRC hired a program manager who has spent the past ten months consulting with leaders in the Jewish community, executives of Jewish non-profit organizations and members of the clergy on how to most effectively rate Jewish non-profit organizations on their workplace policies related to LGBT employees. The index will also include an assessment of organizations’ cultural competency in delivering services to the LGBT community, such as whether the agency has inclusive language and messaging for LGBT clients, members, students, campers, youth, or parents. MLB Adds “Sexual Orientation” to Collective Bargaining Agreement NEW YORK, NY – Major League Baseball has announced that the collective bargaining agreement with players includes “sexual orientation” to its section on discrimination. A person with direct knowledge of the agreement told the New York Daily News that the old 2006-2011 agreement stated that “The provisions of this Agreement shall be applied to all players covered by this Agreement without regard to race, color, religion or national origin.” In the new agreement, the words “sexual orientation” have been added to the equivalent section. The change in wording comes at the end of a significant year for gay rights issues. The military abolished its “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, and same-sex mar-

riage became legal in New York State. In baseball, several teams filmed an “It Gets Better Video,” an anti-bullying effort aimed at Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender youth. Still, there remains disagreement within locker rooms whether a MLB team is ready to accept an openly gay teammate. When news of the same-sex marriage law broke, several players for the New York Mets said privately they would be uncomfortable with an openly gay teammate (while others said they would be comfortable). The new collective bargaining agreement is not likely to change attitudes, but it will make discrimination based on sexual orientation against league rules. H

The pledge advocates several issues, including the Defense of Marriage Act, personal fidelity to the signee’s spouse, appointment of “faithful constitutionalists” as judges and reformation of anti-marriage elements in divorce, tax and welfare laws. Family Leader head Bob Vander Plaats has said signing the pledge will be a prerequisite for the group’s endorsement, one coveted among candidates seeking to nab the evangelical vote. Mother’s Lawsuit Claims Bullying Led to Son’s Suicide FISHERS, IN – The mother of a high school freshman who killed himself last year has filed a lawsuit in federal court against Hamilton Southeastern Schools accusing the district and its employees of not doing enough to stop bullying incidents which, she says, led to her son’s suicide, reported the Indianapolis Star. Natalie Moore alleges teachers and administrators ignored reports that her son, Jamarcus Bell, suffered raciallybased bullying and harassment for perceived homosexuality and emotional disability. According to the lawsuit filed November 21 in the US District Court in Indianapolis, the African-American student was the victim of “constant and ruthless harassment and bullying from other students” who allegedly threw pieces of metal at him during a welding class, stole his shoes, his clothing, had his book bag dumped and was physically assaulted in hallways and classrooms. Illinois Will Permit SameSex Couples to File Joint Tax Returns CHICAGO, IL – The State of Illinois will allow gay and lesbian couples in civil unions to be able to file their state taxes jointly just as married heterosexual couples are currently allowed. Bernard Cherkasov of Equality Illinois states that the victory is not about financial gains for same-sex civil unions but about making sure that same-sex couples receive the same benefits, protections, rights and responsibilities that married couples get. Residents of Illinois pay a flat 5% tax regardless of marital status, so gay and lesbian couples won't save money. H

New York Anti-Same-Sex Lawsuit to Proceed ALBANY, NY – New York Supreme Court Judge Robert Wiggins has agreed to allow the organization, New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedom to proceed with their lawsuit seeking to overturn the passage of the state’s same-sex marriage law. The judge’s four-page decision was critical of Governor Andrew Cuomo for issuing a “message of necessity” that rushed the legislation onto the Senate floor on the final evening of session. In the case of same-sex marriage, the message stated that speed was required as long as 50,000 New York gay couples were being denied their right to marry, a set of circumstances that had pertained for the previous 200 years without prompting emergency action. However, Wiggins admits that since the Senate accepted the message, the matter isn’t one for the courts to meddle in. H

Few Americans with HIV Have it Under Control ATLANTA, GA – US health officials at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that only 28% of the 1.2 million Americans living with HIV have the infection under control increasing the risk that they will spread the disease to others. The CDC went on to say that a big part of the problem is that one in five US adults infected with HIV do not know it. People can be infected with the AIDS virus for years without developing symptoms. Of those who are aware, only half receive ongoing medical care and treatment. To reach groups at the greatest risk, the CDC is launching a new campaign urging regular testing for black gay and bisexual men, a population in which both HIV and syphilis infections continue to rise. Republicans who control the House approved tough restrictions on abortion and a resolution calling for a statewide vote on banning gay marriage last time around, but the Senate’s Democratic leader blocked debate on both measures. According to the Chicago Tribune, the State Senate Majority Leader, Michael Gronstal, has indicated he would do the same again, and given that, Paulsen said there’s little incentive to revisit the issues. The gay marriage fight was sparked by a state Supreme Court decision striking down a law defining marriage as between one man and one woman. The House passed a resolution calling for a statewide vote on amending the constitution to overturn that decision, but Gronstal blocked the resolution in the Senate, where rules and tradition give him the power to decide which issues are debated and which aren't. NETWORKING

DECEMBER 1, 2011

H 17

Networking During the Holiday Season Holiday Parties and Events Can Help Your Business By DREW MILLER Alas, the holiday season has begun and our calendars are filling up with appointments and tasks, all color coded so we can stay organized. Well, at least mine looks like that. Some businesses get super busy during the holidays and have no time (or real need) for networking. Others find business slowing down a bit and need to keep up appearances. It really doesn’t matter how much business you get during the holiday season because you are always networking each time you leave the house. Let’s face it. we all love the “Party Season.” There is no better time of year to meet a whole new army of networkers. In my previous column (Don’t Be a Judger), I discussed seeing everyone I come in contact with as a potential army of workers vs. judging them as a good fit for me and my business. In this column, I would like to continue that line of thought and leave you with a few helpful hints on how to stay on top of your business while enjoying the season. First and foremost is BE POSITIVE! Be the person with the inspirational story about your job or home life. Keep your

conversations upbeat and pleasant. Nobody wants to do business or refer business to someone that comes across as complaining or negative. More people will remember you if you leave them inspired by a great story or life experience. Vulnerability always comes across as honesty and in business, honesty is golden. Map out your holiday season. Look at the parties or events you might be attending and strategically plan out which events are more or less important. That way, if you need to cancel you will know which events can help your business and which events won’t make a difference. Knowledge and smart planning are all ways to keep your business growing. Check out the invite list. Who will be attending the same parties or events? Who would you like to get to know better? Who can help your business grow? These are questions you should keep in mind when you are mingling during the holiday season. Networking is based on personal relationships. People will always do business with someone they have a personal connection with even if there might

be a better deal out there. Write a list of who you want to make connections with and read it just as you arrive so it’s fresh in your mind. How many times have you wished you connected with so and so when you got home. Be prepared. Watch how you conduct yourself. Yes, I mean drinking. I am sure you can recall one person who made an ass of themselves at some function, but you can’t remember the person you went with. The important lesson here is that you are always networking, even when you think you’re off the clock. Just last week, I was out with some colleagues thinking I was, “off the clock!” We attended a party and after got a bite to eat and ended our evening at a local bar. During our time together, we shared stories laughed and joked. Later, when I was thinking about our evening, I thought more on my contributions and the stories I told. I thought, “Is this the person I want them to get to know better?” Was I giving them my best or was I drinking and thinking “oh, this is funny and it will make them like me more!” No damage was done but it did help me realize that

the person I believe I am on the inside needs to be present when I am out with the gang on the town. The holiday season is overwhelming at times. We are shopping, working, and attending events, benefits and parties all while trying to have some down time. With a little pre-planning and organization, you will manage this season with flying colors. This is not the time to let it all go. This is the opportunity to create new business, new colleagues and strengthen relationships with the people in your life. The holiday season is a time to be thankful for what you have and the New Year brings possibilities of what’s to come. Be an inspiration so that people will remember you. When you create your business projections for next year, those people you inspire could be big contributors to your success. H

Today is Thanksgiving. I am here writing this column eating my Thanksgiving feast of Beefaroni. I took a drive around town and it was about as close to a ghost town as I had seen in a while. I take it that everyone is celebrating with family and friends or maybe there are a few people like myself simply grateful to not have to work and find some time to simply relax. A few months ago, I would have thought that I would be making a fat turkey and stuffing and baking a pie with my ex-boyfriend, but that did not come to pass. He was at brunch with new friends he had acquired. One of my business clients called me from New York City, where had had gone last minute to visit his mother. He seemed happy to be there with her, and I was so touched that he took the time to call me and wish me a happy holiday. I then began thinking about my mother and though my memory of her is fragmented at best, I had some time on my hands and began to surf the web to see what information if any was out there about her. To my chagrin, there was nothing I could find. Thanksgiving is an interesting event; there are so many people that take it so seriously, spending this one occasion giving thanks for their blessings or for the family and people in their lives. I personally find it more effective to simply give thanks year around. I received a surprising amount of text messages today wishing me the best, and what was really surprising was that the majority of the messages were from people that are relatively new acquaintances in my life. Longterm friendships has never been my strong suit and if I had not sent a text to my ex, I am sure I would not have received one, so the situation begs the question: what it is about me that keeps me so distant or moreover so alienable from people? What did you do on Thanksgiving? Were you with people you truly cared about or just around people to avoid the sense of loneliness that so many people feel around the holidays? What did you

give thanks for? I am here eating my can of noodles in red sauce, which by the way is pretty tasty and economical as well. I am writing a column about all of this while at the same time thinking of what it is that I am most appreciative and thankful for, and I have come to this one conclusion: I am thankful to be able to be here; to be able to spend each week and share my thoughts and stories with all of you. To know that each week, somewhere, someone is reading my column and hopefully being touched in some way, finding that there is someone out there who thinks about something the way I do, or feels what I have felt or perhaps just creating a virtual bridge between myself and my readers. That is a great blessing for me. So this week I write about what I am most thankful for. It is YOU! Thank you for giving me a voice and for allowing me to enter your minds and hopefully your hearts for a moment each week. It is my sincere wish that you find new and wonderful things to be thankful for. Well, until next week, God bless! H

Since I was a child, I have always been intrigued with the visions that were presented before me on television and in the movies. The actors portraying their parts were more than merely reading lines. They were embodying the persona of the part they were playing. Some convincingly; others, not so much. However, to an impressionable youth they were all people, fictional or not. The one thing television most definitely had become, for me, was perhaps too good a friend. I felt as though I were part of the presentation. That, I somehow fit into this plot or that episode. For many years throughout the late 70s and early 80s, I was infatuated with “The Bionic Woman.” Jamie Summers – now there was a woman; school teacher, international spy and in possession of super strength to boot. She was wholesome, pretty, honest, and could do some really cool stuff. Thanks to syndication, I got to be with her every day after school. There was, of course, “The Bionic Man” as well, but I suppose, even before I knew what it was to be gay, he just wasn’t my type. Not that Jamie Summers was either. However, I didn’t just have a mere crush on Jamie. I wanted to be her! So much so that, I used to run in slow motion and try and mimic that bionic sound. I once even attempted to jump from my back porch into the yard, resulting in a few scrapes, bruises and some curious looks from my mother. Then, there were the movie characters. My first (and last) camping trip was a weekend of sheer terror, for at night, I was sure that every twig breaking, every leaf falling, was “Jason” behind his hockey mask lying in wait to kill us all. I have to confess, that even at my age, when I’m at my mother’s country house, I still have trouble sleeping even with a pharmacy at my disposal. With the advent of YouTube, I was rejoined with the screen “friends” of my youth. Jamie Summers was no longer selling mattresses to the middle aged masses, she was just as young and pretty and able to jump over large objects with ease. Sometime later, I discovered the “blooper reels” from some other shows I had once enjoyed and decided to see if there were any for the “Bionic Woman.” That’s just before the walls between fiction and reality began to crumble. I had always admired Jamie’s soft-

spoken nature, kindness and the certain fragility she displayed despite her super strength. Then I saw my first “blooper” reel of the show. For the first time, I separated the actress, Lindsey Wagner, from the character, Jamie Summers, due mostly to the fact that when off screen, Lindsey had the mouth of a sailor. Just about every scene that she flubbed was followed by words I won’t mention here, but one in particular, starting with F set the tone. I then began to put together in my mind the “roles” we allow ourselves to play, be they intentional or not. I remember watching with awe as my mother went through her morning routine of “putting her face on” while I ate my bowl of Captain Crunch. It seemed to me that she too was getting ready to play a part she perhaps didn’t want to play, but had been cast into. Many of my friends seemed to fit into this mold as well. They didn’t necessarily become who they wanted to be, they became what they were expected to be by society, “Nazi nuns,” heavy-handed parents and so on. I was forged into a polite, non-violent, obedient child by the nuns and teachers at my school, while the “real” me lurked under the surface, wrecking havoc every Photo courtesy, Harve Bennett Productions

chance I had. I have yet to shed all those vestiges of youth or the appearances I wish others to see, but that I know aren’t completely real. Trouble is, I haven’t completely figured out how to separate the two, though I am working on it. What would I have turned out to be had I zigged when told to zag or turned left when ordered right? I suppose I’ll never know, but I leave you with the same question. Where would you be right now without the shell of the character into which you were molded? Until next time, Christian H

Five Grand a Month No, five grand per month is not what I earn. Nor is it, as some claim, what I outlay monthly on my grooming or clothing. Five thousand dollars a month is what someone could expect to pay for HIV medication in Broward County. If you don’t have insurance that is the minimum it would cost you for the crucial medications that would keep you alive. If you have insurance, it’s a different story. Otherwise, five grand is your bottom line – not including doctor’s visits or anything other than the pills themselves. Since many people here in Florida don’t have medical coverage, and state AIDS programs are completely underfunded, then you are pretty much screwed. In this economy, you would be very lucky to be pulling in $5,000 per month. Would it be possible for anyone to expect someone to spend their entire paycheck solely on meds without even taking into account basic living expenses? Well the answer is yes. Yes, it is very possible to expect because, as with every healthcare system all over the world, it is flawed. If you earn below a certain amount, you can be eligible for a program that will cover your meds. However, once you exceed that cap, you will be dropped. So realistically without insurance, if you exceed the cap, the only way to do it and to pay for your meds would be to pull in the salary of a banker. Why does this happen? Well partly due to the fact the state can’t pay for everyone’s meds who don’t have insurance. The money simply isn’t there. The bigger question, however, is how can the drug companies justify the expense, when countries all over the world including the UK offer HIV meds for free? Well that in itself is an explanation. The US HIV positive individuals are largely contributing to the funding for the drugs for all over the world! As World AIDS day arrives, we can look back over 30 years of a disease that has changed the face of the globe and put the gay community’s progress back immeasur-

ably. The question everyone asks is why has a cure not been found? Why is there still no complete vaccine? We hear every so often in the news about “being close to a cure,” about vaccines, and about new ways of using drugs to prevent infection in the first place including the use of Truvada. Yet realistically, there seems to be a major stick when it comes to the cure. Many argue this is because the drug companies don’t want to find a cure. They are making far too much money off the drugs they offer currently. In addition as highlighted by Christian Alexander in the Florida Agenda a few weeks ago, they are no longer focused on producing new medications. Instead, they are recombining and configuring older medications to ensure that patents exist and that generics can’t be offered at a lower cost in their place.

From an outsider to the pharmaceutical industry, as many of us are, it seems the companies are so busy redesigning the drugs that they have lost sight of the aim of drugs in the first place; to help keep people alive. The worrying part of this perceived loss of focus is found in those for whom the new combinations haven’t worked . Their only hope now is a miracle. These people are not responding to the old drugs in new packaging, just as they didn’t respond the regime in its old format. They are asking the question we all should be asking--where are the new meds? Many people are still arguing that the

Alex Vaughn medical research community has all but abandoned the search for a cure, saying that a vaccine and treatment are more viable routes to take because many people are able to survive due to antiviral drugs, turning HIV into a chronic condition rather than a death sentence. In the news this week alone, there has been talk of a cure. The information comes from a man who had treatment for leukemia and through an intense bone marrow procedure, now tests as HIV negative. Though promising, this type of treatment is not logistically possible as a cure. In addition, it is extremely risky. The reason it was successful is because the donor was in the 1% of people who are naturally immune to HIV. Scientists have noted that these special donors lack the CCR5 gene, which is a protein on the surface of immune cells that the virus uses as an entry portal. This has led scientists to explore this further, yet they are clear to say it could be years, if ever, that a cure is found. All of which leads us back to the question of why? With so much information, generated by the discoveries gathered over 30 years, shouldn’t there be a clearer goal of an AIDS-free generation in sight? Finance is always key. According the New York Times just this week, The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases says a cure is one of its top priorities, this year awarding grants that could total $70 million. More grants are coming. California’s stem-cell agency has committed a total of $38 million to three research teams over five years to fund projects intended to find a cure. Companies like Merck, Gilead Sciences, Sangamo BioSciences and Calimmune have begun research. As we observe World Aids Day, we have to remember those lost, and stand united in finding a cure. Donate money, talk to your doctors and do your research. Remember the one pill-a-day myth may not apply to you and, even if it does, you may need $5,000 a month to pay for it. H

In response to Editor’s opinion “Pink Picket Fences” in the Florida Agenda, November 24, 2011. DEAR EDITOR, I found your Pink Picket Fence opinion an interesting take on the current situation facing many people in the gay community. I have been with my partner for 15 years and we have a child together. We are both from upstate New York and moved to Florida because we felt it would be better for our daughter. We have always had her best interests at heart, but we have struggled here in Florida, due to the cost of housing and our own picket fence. I appreciate you acknowledging that

though we seem to be living that American Dream, it is not all it has cracked up to be. We are grateful for our lives, but our dreams that have no come true aren’t as we had hoped and don’t look like we thought they would. SINCERELY, M. This story actually went viral and made international news and was on the front page of The Sun newspaper in the UK. The woman who was injected, traveled down here to South Florida from Tampa, and paid Oneal $700 for what she thought was medical silicone injections. However, when she returned home, she ended up seriously ill in a Tampa hospital. In recent years, there have been a number of nightmare stories of people getting seriously ill and even dying from black market silicone injections. These stories hit very close to home for me, because I too have gotten black market silicone injections. As a matter of fact, I am one of the people that went to Ms. Morris for injections. Many transgender women end up getting black market silicone mainly because it’s a lot less expensive than going to a plastic surgeon and the results can be pretty quick. When you’re transgen-

der, matching ones physical body with the way one feels inside becomes dire. Getting silicone injections in the T-Girl community is almost like a rite of passage. I realize now I too could have become very ill or even died from the injections. I had injections in my face, chest, buttocks and hips. All of my body work, so far, has been fine. However, I suffered a horrible reaction in my face especially on the left side where three huge nodules formed and had my face looking quite distorted. I also experienced a bad facial infection and an extreme amount of pain. I ended up having to have surgery to remove the tumor-like nodules. And thanks to the great work of Dr. John J. Martin Jr. in Coral Gables, Florida, my face has improved although I continue to have to go for medical treatment. Despite what I went through with my face overall, the black market injections did help me a great deal to feminize my look. I know that I may sound a bit contradictory but for transgender people achieving the look of the gender one feels is that important. As far as my face is concerned the injections gave me more of an oval looking face, which definitely gave me a

more feminine look. As far as my body is concerned my breasts are what I’m most proud of. Breasts are a major part of the body that distinguishes a female from a male. There are many transgendered girls that have gotten black market silicone injection and been fine. For them, silicone has been a best friend. Seriously though, going to someone’s house or hotel room to get injections is really rolling the dice. Most of the people administering the injections are not medically trained and you don’t know if they are using medical silicone or some sort of chemically toxic concoction. As I look at my transitional journey and the journey of my trans sisters and brothers, I know that the system needs to be revamped. Maybe if insurance companies would cover gender reassignment, trans people could transition in a safe manner! H

Snowbiz Now!

Cause of Death By NICHOLAS SNOW Whether we like it or not, we’re all going to have one — a cause of death that is. As another World AIDS Day comes and goes, let’s have a reality check, shall we? I’m not writing this column to depress you, but rather to empower you. If you are reading this, you can be sure that you are alive. You can also be sure that you fall into the first, second and/or third of the following categories: 1) You are HIV positive and you know it; 2) You may be HIV positive but have not been tested recently (or at all); 3) You were HIV negative upon your last test. I came out of the closet before there was such a thing as an HIV test. The year the test arrived, and for over a quarter century, I was “HIV negative upon my last test,” but all of that changed on January 3, 2008, approximately five months after I became HIV positive because I did not use a condom when I should have. Yes, it took me five months to gain the courage to have the test as a New Year’s resolution. I had been very good at maintaining safer sex practices for virtually my entire adult life, having turned eighteen years old in 1980. So what changed? Why did I have unsafe sex? 1) I was depressed at the time and not as focused on taking care of myself; 2) I was with a partner who said and believed he was HIV negative; and 3) I had a false sense of security about remaining HIV negative so far into the epidemic. NONE OF THESE ARE GOOD REASONS for not having used a condom, but they are human reasons. For millions of people throughout the world who do not have access to antiretroviral medications, HIV is a death sentence. For the tens of thousands of people each year who learn they have HIV not because of a test, but because they became sick with AIDS-related opportunistic infections, HIV is often a death sentence. For the thousands of HIV positive people (or more) who cannot tolerate or develop a resistance to antiretroviral medications for one reason or another, HIV is a death sentence. This is to all dispel the myth, “If I get HIV, I can just take a pill and everything will be okay.” So here’s my own newsflash as a result of attending an HIV/AIDS medicine symposium last year—as an HIV positive person, in spite of having access (so far) to some of the most modern antiretroviral medications in the world, I can very well have a shortened lifespan because of HIV. For those of you who have remained HIV negative, please don’t buy into the

myth that should you become positive all you have to do is take a pill and everything will be okay. Play safely. Stay negative! To give meaning to my own mistake and hopefully prevent you from following in my unsafe sex footsteps, I created “The Power To Be Strong” HIV Testing/Safer Sex Awareness Campaign, the cornerstone of which is a song with a music video subtitled in 20 languages (including Spanish) at YouTube.com/ThePowerToBeStrong. But can a song make a difference in people’s lives? Yes. How many people turn to music in their time of sorrow? How many listen to love songs when they have a broken heart? How many people are inspired by songs such as “The Wind Beneath My Wings?” Now a song exists to address the fears and concerns of someone who may have HIV. Recently I received a message from a Facebook user explaining that only two people In the world know he is HIV positive, and he went on to say: “I listen to your song every morning and it gives me the strength to face my day.” My gift to you in the homestretch to the New Year as you consider your own resolutions, go online and visit www.SnowbizNow.com, and look for the “Free Song” link in the main menu bar to download “The Power to be Strong.” Remember, “Get Tested and Live Longer and Be Strong!” I’d like to conclude by sharing one of my favorite quotes from Goethe: “Whatever you can do or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it Now!” H

DINING / RECIPE

Amazingly Delicious and Unpretentious Dine Al Fresco at the Water’s Edge By TIM SLIVINSKI On a recent balmy evening with a friend visiting from Brooklyn, where it has already tumbled down to thirty degrees, we found ourselves heading to Coconuts. He wanted to maximize his outdoor time before returning north, so an al fresco dinner on the Intracoastal held great appeal for him. The fact that we could eat waterside just sweetened the idea. Coconuts now offers valet parking, so you no longer have to circle its small but crowded lot looking for a space. Just let the valet do it! We were shown to a table on the lower deck directly on the Intracoastal, and settled in for a relaxing evening looking at the water, the stars in the sky, and getting caught up. It was a Tuesday evening, but the entire place was buzzing with conversation as it was quite crowded. On Monday and Tuesday evenings, Coconuts offers 50% off all bottles on their wine list, a deal that is difficult to pass up. Even better, the wine list carries some unusual varietals and labels, giving diners the option to order something beyond the usual suspects on most restaurant wine lists. In keeping with the outdoorsy feel that we were enjoying, my friend and I ordered a bottle of Whispering Angel Rosé from Provence. It is on the list at $28.00 a bottle, so it’s a steal at 50% off. It’s

a light, slightly dry Rosé with a bit of fruit, not at all sweet; light, crisp, and refreshing. Jason, our friendly server, brought us a chiller, and informed us of that night’s featured appetizers. We decided to share Coconuts famous heirloom tomato salad ($15.00), as Jason informed us that it would be large enough to split and that it was the restaurant’s biggest appetizer seller. When it arrived, we could see why. Beautiful, yellow, red, and purple heirloom tomatoes are tossed with a light vinaigrette dressing and crumbles of blue cheese, topped with crispy croutons. Each tomato was bursting with juicy goodness, tasting like the tomatoes you could grow in your own garden. The dressing was piquant and tangy, and the salad was not overly dressed. We enjoyed each forkful as the salad quickly disappeared. As we savored the wine and the breeze, Jason returned to go over dinner features. Coconuts is a place where it is imperative to listen to your server go over the features. The kitchen turns out interesting, unique, flavorful dishes that always delight me every time I venture to try something new. This night, however, the paella ($28.00) cooking on the outdoor deck under the watchful eye of a chef caught my friend’s attention. This savory

jean’s Carpaccio kitchen Some chefs have taken to naming any dish of thinly sliced protein 'Carpaccio,' but this dish was originally made with raw beef. It was first served in “Harry’s Bar” in Venice, Italy. Harry’s Bar? Yes, a strange name for a Venetian bar. As the story goes, Harry Pickering, a heavy drinker and son of some rich guy from Boston, borrowed money from a bartender. He paid the bartender off some years later tenfold. Enough for the bartender to open his own establishment in 1931 which he called Harry’s Bar. Harry's Bar has been frequented by loads of famous people – Ernest Hemingway, Truman Capote, Orson Welles, and Woody Allen among them. In 1950, the countess Amalia Nani Mocenigo ordered raw meat (apparently by doctor’s orders) and the dish was named Carpaccio by Cipriani the owner-in reference to the Venetian painter Vittore Carpaccio, because the colors of the raw meat and mustard sauce reminded him of paintings by Carpaccio. • 8 to 10 ounces beef tenderloin from the tip end of the roast • Salt and Freshly ground black pepper • Shaved Parmesan • Fresh raw button mushrooms (optional) • Capers • Freshly squeezed lemon juice • Extra virgin olive oil

Roll your meat in plastic cling film, make it round or rectangular; you are the chef. Pop it in the freezer and freeze the beef until almost frozen, about 1 1/2 hours (this makes it easier to cut into very thin slices). Using a large sharp carving knife, or a slicer, slice the beef as thinly as possible. Arrange the beef slices on a serving platter, or directly onto individual plates. Drizzle with olive oil and lemon juice. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, the capers and the parmesan shavings. Most chefs serve a small rocket (Arugula) salad or fries with this. H

and hearty combination of seafood, sausage, and chicken in saffron rice was calling his name. When it arrived, he swore he would never eat it all, as the portion is very generous. Wrong! His plate was clean. He said the flavors of all the ingredients were well-married, with no one item overpowering the others. It had simmered and cooked to perfection, offering a meld of savory, spicy flavors. I, on the other hand, had my heart set on one of my favorite entrées at Coconuts: the Barbecued Back Ribs ($22.00). I am not a rib eater, but I fell in love with them long ago when coaxed by a friend to try one rib from her order. I was hooked – immediately. I do not order ribs in any other restaurant, but I find myself craving Coconuts version of this eat-with-your-fingers dish. They are “fall off the bone” tender in a BBQ sauce that combines just the right amount of tang, heat, and sweetness, without letting any one of them take over. I dove into my entrée, also thinking that a portion would go home for lunch the next day. They never made it. I ordered them with a side of mac ‘n cheese, which was very cheesy (in a good way) and a side of

Coconuts Waterside Grill 429 Seabreeze Ave., Ft. Lauderdale, FL 954-525-2421 roasted cauliflower, my nod to healthy eating. The cauliflower was actually delicious, as roasting it brings out a flavor profile in the vegetable that no other preparation can match. As we enjoyed the remaining wine in our bottle, I realized why Coconuts beckons me to return so often. It is a comfortable outdoor venue in a beautiful setting that serves amazingly delicious food in an unpretentious and unfussy way. The wait staff is always friendly and knowledgeable of their menu’s food. It is a place that is dog-friendly, and the sight of so many people relaxing and enjoying themselves is calming. Coconuts’ motto is “be nice.” They are very nice and expect the same from their patrons. Somehow, I can’t imagine not being nice at a place that makes dining do delicious and comfortable. H

When Being an Oscar Front-Runner Is NOT a Good Thing “The Descendants” By WARREN DAY “The Descendants” with George Clooney has the mixed-blessing of being an Oscar front-runner for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and will probably get nominations in other categories, such as Best Supporting Actress. Why is such a thing a mixed-blessing? It’s a rather common hiccup in the award season – where we’re now entering the home stretch – that the movie that gets the big buzz too early grows stale with too much chatter and the voters turn to something fresher on their radar. This happened two years ago with another Clooney film, “Up in the Air,” and it happened last year with “The Social Network.” It would be a great shame if this befell “The Descendants,” because it achieves something far more special than multimillion dollar special effects could ever do. It’s as funny as life can be at its messiest, and as emotionally moving as it can be at its best. It isn’t so much a movie you watch as a story you live. And how often can you say that? A disheveled George Clooney plays a work-obsessed lawyer in Hawaii who’s also the sole trustee for a family trust that owns 25,000 acres of pristine beach property due to the fact he’s a direct descendant of one of the first white landowners (who also married a princess of the once Hawaiian royal house). It’s a fortune-for-the-taking and a group of wide-eyed cousins are pressuring him to cash in. It’s also one of the reasons he’s been a neglectful husband and father, calling himself “the backup parent, the understudy.” And then, at the beginning of the movie, his wife is involved in a boating

accident off Waikiki beach that leaves her in a coma, and he must deal with two daughters and a spouse that it turns out he barely knows or understands. What follows is both one of the best comedies and one of the best dramas of this or any year. “The Descendants” is a movie about fractured connections in our past and in our present, situations we allow to continue because either we’re distracted by other things, or more likely, because we’re at a loss to know what to do about them. Then something happens and we are forced to reach across gaps that have grown between those we love and those for whom we bear some responsibility. Almost none of us have been big landowners in Hawaii or anywhere else, but most of us have been involved with broken connections to one degree or another. The majority of today’s movies give us highly exaggerated versions of both heroes and villains, so it can come as something of a shock (and a welcomed relief) to see genuinely real people in real life situations. Or have we become so desensitized by the bombast of action movies and frat-boy comedies that we can’t respond to a life-size story? You may not notice how great a performance Clooney is giving until you realize how different a character he’s playing from himself – a bewildered parent and cuckold husband who’s totally inept in dealing with females of any age. Hollywood usually rewards more showy roles, but it’s the subtleties and shadings that demand the best acting and here Clooney really delivers. He doesn’t tell you what he feels, but rather his face and body language shows you what’s going

on inside his character with all its complexities and contradictions. And it’s a performance that fits into a talented ensemble cast, with the wonderful Shailene Woodley as his rebellious 17 year-old daughter, whose acting reminds you how seldom you see an authentic adolescent in the movies. It’s the kind of story where the characters break out of their stereotypes and surprise you, as so often happens in real life. And Hawaii itself breaks out of its stereotype, for Alexander Payne, the director and co-writer, shows you not only the picture postcard side, but also the traffic jams, the crowded Honolulu skyline, the rainy overcast days, and the tacky restaurants. Whereas most Hollywood movies are filled with big moments that in the end mean little – explosions, car chases, trucks transforming into robots, teenage hunks turning into werewolves (the latter two with much the same result), and frantic battles to the death with magic wands -- Alexander Payne has a talent for finding the little moments that have big meanings to his characters and to anyone in the audience with an ounce of empathy. His movies are road trips of the soul. The very last scene in “The Descendants” is a simple and ordinary one, but in the context of this ever-deepening story with its ever-developing characters, it’s a wallop to the heart that leaves you lifted and hopeful. In the most emotional moments neither Payne nor Clooney go for sentimentality, but instead for a saving grace, and that’s as amazing in a movie as it is in life. C’mon A My HOUSE Mark Lowe’s Newest Club Concept... HOUSE, Miami By ALEX VAUGHN

How long have you been here? What brought you to South Florida? I've been in South Florida 12 years. I originally came when I was younger as a model for a photo shoot, loved it, and came back. You are credited with turning Living Room into one of the hottest nightclubs in town. What is prompting you to go into a new venue? I'm a person who constantly needs to challenge myself artistically and creatively. Without struggle, there's no growth. Art needs to constantly evolve. My plan was always to carry this concept around the world. Please tell Florida Agenda readers about what to expect from HOUSE. HOUSE is really a complete evolution for me. I've designed 13 nightclubs, and all had something that made them unique. Living Room was the beginning of the club as a home idea. HOUSE is a fully realized concept. What niche did you feel was missing in Miami? I think Miami is such a global city for nightlife. When you think of exciting nightclubs, you think of Miami. That said, the most visually spectacular clubs tend to be geared toward the straight market, LIV, LOUIS at the Gansevoort, Amnesia, etc. The gay community has great options that have done very well like SCORE, TWIST, and Mova. I have great respect for these venues, especially when you consider they operate seven days a week in a very tough economy. I want to bring the most beautiful nightclub in Miami to our community. What advantages do you feel there are having a business within the gay community? The gay community has been very loyal to me long before Living Room. When I decided to open a nightclub, it was important for me to promote and build a following, I did that for three years. Those people have continued to follow me, and they are solely responsible for any amount of success I've had. What disadvantages do you feel there are? Absolutely none. If even the most homophobic and judgmental person meets you and connects to you personally, sexuality is irrelevant.

How would you identify your management approach? Iron Fist or more Flexible? I'm very much a perfectionist and can be demanding. I expect a lot, and give a lot. If a light isn't perfect, it can destroy my entire night. The positive thing with HOUSE is I have a really good team. I'm working with a great partner Sebastian Aaron-Stigall, who has a strong management and operations background. I'm working with a phenomenal visual artist Stefan Von Fouts, and an entire production company. This really enables me to focus on what I'm good at with no distractions.

Mark Lowe of Living Room fame brings a hot new concept to Miami. His newest club venture will bring you from the street into a house. The working art project is in full swing and will open its doors to welcome you home soon. The Florida Agenda sat down with the visionary to find out a little more.

How do you think the community as a whole will respond to HOUSE? What type of people do you envisage coming? I think the community will respond to the fact that it's a truly creative space. The visuals and details don’t exist anywhere in the world. From 3D architectural mapping, 360-degree panoramic projections, kitchens as bars, and showers as VIP rooms, HOUSE is genuinely more of a work of art than a nightclub. I wanted the first club in the Wynwood Arts District to be a groundbreaking space and experience. In your lifetime, how do you feel the gay community has changed? I think we went through our periods where everyone was trying to look straight wearing Abercrombie etc. I love the new kids coming up expressing themselves creatively. Their blurring the lines between femininity and masculinity and their “don't give a f***” attitude is amazing. Lady Gaga has been a huge influence on their creativity. Do you see a positive change in attitudes towards the gay community? I refuse to see anything less. We are all human, we bleed, we die. People have no choice but to accept the fact that we are here. We are your attorneys, your doctors, your military, and your neighbor next door. Living Room is very much an open venue for gay and straight people. Will HOUSE follow the same model? Absolutely, I create clubs that are welcome to everybody who wants to escape from the stresses of life. The best parties are mixed, with all the colors of the rainbow. Why did you not position Living Room as a total gay club? I’m a business person who happens to be gay. My sexuality is a small part of who I am, and doesn't define me. Any decision I make is based on what's best for business regardless of race, gender, or sexuality. If Martians came down

from Mars and want a Martian party and it is successful, I'm having a Martian-oRama. What other plans do you have for the future? Washington, DC, San Diego, Austin, Texas, Peru and Brazil; I want to spread like a porn stars’ cheeks! If you had an open check book, what business would you go into next? Who says I don't? Exactly what I'm doing now! H

TRAVEL

FLORIDAAGENDA.COM

The Many Sides of Bali Part III: “The Rustic East” By PAUL RUBIO Beyond South Bali’s crowded shorelines, life quickly changes heading east. Frenetic traffic gives way to isolated roads bordered by stacked rice terraces and lush jungle. Scenes of daily village life quickly usurp the fast food and motorcycle calamity. Circumventing the eastern coastline towards the traditional villages of Manggis, Cadidasa, and Tenganan, colossal vines and palm trees vie for space along dramatic cliffsides. Secluded beaches usher in the rising tides from the Straits of Lombok. Navigating this shoreline feels like a journey back in time. Women stroll along roadsides, balancing buckets of salak (snake fruit) on their heads, and children weave delicate floral arrangements called banten canang as religious offerings for life cycle ceremonies within the village. The colors, the smiles,

and the sounds – they’re all so vibrantly expressive. Many of these traditional scenes stem for the Balinese devotion to their own version of Hinduism – Agama Hindu Dharma. This fidelity has resulted in an island of “1000 temples,” none more important than east Bali’s 11th century Mother Temple of Besakih, the inspiration for every temple found in Bali’s countless villages. Unobtrusively situated in this land of time bygone, east Bali’s most prized resort, the 34-villa Amankila (amanresorts.com) serves as an ambassador and gateway to the island’s coastal stronghold of anthropology and ecology, fostering cross-cultural interactions in nearby villages and facilitating day trips throughout the magnificent countryside. Amankila, or “peaceful hill,” is romanticized utter seclusion at its finest, tran-

quility in the shadow of the island’s apex, Mount Agung. The majority of guests at Amankila strive for equilibrium between tropically breezed, unabashed pampering and immersion in Bali’s nature and traditions; and the resort offers the best of both worlds. An early morning sunrise trek to picturesque Gumang Hill or a snorkeling cruise aboard Aman XII is complemented by an afternoon of spa treatments and a beachside private candlelite dinner. Likewise, a full afternoon of exploring villages, frolicking in renowned water palaces, and bargaining in local markets, often begins with a picnic breakfast on top of the world at either of Amankila’s romantic satellite bales and later ends with a Rijsttafel dinner, a ten course Indonesian dining extravaganza. For those wanting to sim-

ply enjoy the understated elegance and outstanding amenities of the resort, opportunities for sheer relaxation are infinite – whether in-suite, beachfront, hilltop, or hillside. Your best memories may well surface as long afternoons, sampling each level of the three-tiered infinity pool or nursing glasses of fine wine at the exclusive beach club amidst a coconut grove. Next to Amankila, here in the rustic East, you'll also find Alila Manggis (www.alilahotels.com/manggis) a moderately priced hotel offering exceptional value in a tremendous location. The hotel’s extensive list of activities – from treks to snorkeling trips to visits to uninhabited nearby islands – are experiential and dutifully capture the essence of east Bali. H

Smoking & Your Diet Fighting the Effects with Food By ANDY KRESS Smoking in society is one thing that has been around for hundreds of years. People still continue to smoke despite all of the precautions that are on the label of the product, advertisements on TV and billboards, as well as many doctors’ recommendations. Cigarettes and cigars are one of the easiest legal drugs to obtain, and they can be found just about everywhere. Most of us are aware that smoking increases your risk of heart attacks, respiratory diseases and various types of lung, throat and mouth cancer. The evidence is quite clear with the more than 419,000 deaths from smoking each year in the United States, and over 3 million

worldwide. Over 30% of all cancer patients that die each year (about 166,000) can be linked to death from their smoking habits. Don’t forget about the kiddies too. Smoking during pregnancy accounts for many health problems that young babies face, a direct consequence of their mothers’ smoking habits, that’s presuming of course that they even make it at all. Many of those babies die each year due to miscarriages, low birth weight, or prematurity. But did you know that you can fight some of these deleterious effects of smoking through your diet? I am guessing probably not. There is no diet that completely prevents all of the detrimental effects on your health, but there are ways to escape the Grim Reaper’s hold and at least limit the damage. There is strong evidence in a number of studies that show smoking can affect your metabolism and nutritional status. Substantial lowered levels of vitamin C, vitamin A, calcium and beta-carotene have been found in the blood of smokers. Vitamin C is a vital antioxidant that slows tumor growth in the body. Having at least one daily serving of any citrus fruit or vegetables is a great way to ensure that our body is getting what it needs to fight off disease and prevent

any nasty tumors from forming. Thinking of skipping out on eating those fruits and veggies and just take a vitamin C supplement instead? Think again. This can actually do more harm than good. Taking vitamin C supplements in large doses of 1000 mgs or more causes the nicotine that smokers so desperately crave to be excreted even faster through the urine, creating a more profound sensation for the body to want another cigarette or puff off of that cigar. Vitamin A and beta-carotene may also have implications in helping to fight off cancerous cells. Increasing your consumption of the antioxidants vitamin A, beta-carotene and vitamin E can reverse some of the deficiency throughout smokers’ bodies. You can find an ample supply of beta-carotene in orange fruits and vegetables, as well as green leafy vegetables. Vitamin A can be found in liver, oily fish, eggs and fortified milk. A daily serving of nuts, seeds, vegetable oils, leafy green vegetables or wheat germ are great sources for getting a dose of vitamin E. Scientists are unsure why calcium levels can drop in smokers, but an easy way to prevent this is by eating low fat cheeses and tofu, or if eating these foods is not to your taste, you can drink your calcium with fortified orange juices and milk. Be sure to get at least 2-3 servings of calcium each day to keep your body at optimal health. Calcium is extremely important for women who smoke--even, more so if they have reached menopause. Eating cruciferous vegetables is yet another way to help prevent some of the effects of cancer that smoking can cause. Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables provide sulforaphane, which may help cut the risk of smoking-related cancers through your diet. Don’t be afraid to consume 3-4 servings of these vegetables a week for best results. This article is not written to condone your smoking habit. I recommend stopping immediately, if at all possible. Many have tried and failed to quit, and for those folks, this column is written to help you be the best you can be. Remember, your best defense is to remove the addiction from your life. Your health quite likely will depend on it. H
