By JAMES MICHAELS Bishop Eddie L. Long of his New Birth Missionary Baptist Church resigned from the pulpit last Sunday to try to save his marriage just days after his wife Vanessa filed for divorce. They had been married for 21 years and have four children. Long, said that he would remain as head pastor of the church but needed the time to attempt to save his marriage, and that he needed time to take care of “some family business.” Bishop Long has a long history of antigay sermons and activities. Long has ministered “homosexual cure” programs to recruit gays and lesbians for what he called “Sexual Reorientation” conferences and his church offered an ongoing “Out of the Wilderness” ministry to help convert homosexuals into heterosexuals. In 2004, Long led a march with Bernice King to the grave of her father, Martin Luther King, Jr. The march was a protest against same-sex marriage and in sup-
port of a national constitutional amendment to limit marriage rights to couples comprising “one man and one woman." A 2007 article in the Southern Poverty Law Center’s magazine called him “one of the most virulently homophobic black leaders in the religiously based anti-gay movement.” However, in September 2010, several civil complaints were filed against Long by men that stated he used his position as the church leader to entice or coerce the men into consensual sexual relationships in exchange for money, travel and goods. Long denied the allegations through his attorneys and spokesman. In a prepared statement, Long said that he had devoted his life to helping others and these false allegations hurt him deeply. However he said that his faith was strong and the truth will emerge. At that time, he asked his congregation for their patience and that he categorically denies all the

“Dab the AIDS Bear”
A Promise to a Dying Little Girl Starts a National Phenomenon By BOB KECSKEMETY Dab Garner, if he didn’t already hold a place in the medical history books, would hold a place in history for the good he does for others. Now in its 22nd year, Garner is bringing cheer to children suffering with HIV/AIDS during this holiday season through his “Dab the AIDS Bear” project. In 1982, Garner became friends and godfather to a little girl affected with AIDS. In fact, she was the first little girl born in San Francisco with HIV. The child was an orphan and her mother died shortly after the Candice, the little girl, was born. The mother did not know who the father was. To make matters worse, Candice was also born deformed. Garner himself was diagnosed with HIV earlier in that year on Valentine’s Day and immediately became an activist. He went to the hospital where Candice was being taken
care of and noticed how Candice was being cared for in the pediatric AIDS unit. “It struck me how horrible it was that even the nurses in the ward would not pay attention to this little girl. As you can imagine in the ‘80s, nobody wanted a child with HIV much less a deformed one so my second partner and I became her godparents. Back then, as a gay couple, we couldn’t legally adopt her.” Garner and his partner shopped all year for Christmas presents for Candice as Christmas was Candice’s favorite holiday. Candice died when she was 4-1/2 years old in August. At her bedside, Garner promised the dying child that he would make other children like her feel loved and special. Garner remembered that at the time, there were about a dozen other children with HIV in the San Francisco Bay area, so ‘DAB THE AIDS BEAR’ continues on Page 13

Gays Boycott Salvation Army Bell-Ringers
Mayor Won’t Apologize for “Queer” Statement in Facebook Status TROY, MI – Troy, Michigan’s newly elected mayor on Friday said she won’t apologize for a Facebook status update she wrote five months ago referring to gay people as “queers” saying she was speaking for herself when she wrote it and she has a First Amendment right to use the language she wants. The Detroit News reports that on June 25, the same day New York voted to legalize gay marriage, Janice Daniels posted an update on her wall, “I think I'm going to throw away my I Love New York carrying bag now that queers can get married there.” Even though the update was written in June, last Friday more than 205 people shared it on their own Facebook pages, many referring to Daniels as homophobic and bigoted.

ALEXANDRIA, VA – The national LGBT blog, The Bilerico Project, has awakened the gay community concerning the Salvation Army’s discrimination against gays and lesbians and the community has reacted by turning their backs on the annual bell ringers. As reported by MSNBC, Bill Browning, editor-in-chief of The Bilerico Project said that as the holiday approach, the Salvation Army bell ringers are in front of stores asking shoppers for donations. He went on to say that if a LGBT person cares about equal rights, they will skip making a donation to the Salvation Army and make a donation to a charity that doesn’t discriminate against gays and lesbians. Andy Thayer of the Gay Liberation Network told MSNBC that the organization is urging a boycott of the Salvation Army because it uses its selective interpretation of the Bible to promote discrimination against LGBT people in employment benefits and leadership positions. The Salvation Army, a charitable evangelical Christian organization that provides aid and services to the needy, denies that it discriminates against anyone. Lt. Col Ralph Bukiewicz, a divisional commander of the Salvation Army said that nothing could be further from the truth and that the Salvation Army does not determine eligibility for any service within the agency on a person’s sexual orientation and that they don’t even ask for that information. Gay-rights advocates contend the organization has a history of lobbying for anti-gay policies and legislation. Browing said that in 2004 the Salvation Army threatened to close all their soup kitchens for the homeless in New York to protest the city’s decision to require vendors and charities doing business with the city to adhere to the state’s civil rights laws forbidding discrimination based on sexual orientation. H
One gay rights group, Equality Michigan, called on Daniels, a tea party activist who was elected mayor of this suburban city 20 miles north of Detroit in November, to apologize. Daniels said she wouldn’t apologize. She said she wasn’t even thinking about running for mayor of Troy at the time she wrote the update. H

Church Protests Pride Parade Route CHICAGO, IL – One of the oldest Roman Catholic churches in Chicago has objected to the proposed route for the city’s gay pride parade claiming that the parade will draw large crowds and block the entrance of the church for Sunday Mass, the Chicago Tribune reported. For over 40 years, the parade has run through the north side of the Chicago and attracted over 800,000 people last year. To better accommodate the large crowds, the parade organizers extended the route next year further north, has scaled back the number of floats and will start the parade earlier in the day. Chicago’s gay pride parade is held the last Sunday in June. The new route takes the parade in front of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Church officials are circulating a petition informing the city that the extended route and the earlier parade start time conflicts with the church’s Mass schedule and that the church may, for the first time in almost 100 years, have to cancel services the day of the parade. Sever was ordered to undergo mental health counseling and continue his education during his detention. Zach Huston, 15, was assaulted on October 17 in a classroom at Unioto High School, with the youth and his mother both saying he was targeted because he is gay. H

Is Exodus International Falling Apart? ALTIMONTE SPRINGS, FL – Ex-Gay Watch has been keeping an eye on
Exodus International, an organization dedicated to “cure the gay” and reports the Exodus is almost in ruin. Ex-Gay Watch said that on November 16, Exodus held a meeting of the organization’s leadership to keep the organization from falling into social and financial oblivion. Ex-Gay Watch reported that in the past couple of years, Exodus has cut its staff, lose key alliances and suffers from a general moderation in American views toward homosexuality. These factors have been for Exodus that they have increased efforts abroad where there exists less formal opposition to their message that living a gay-affirming life is sinful, wrong and unhealthy and change is the only way to truly please God. Exodus’ problems seemed to have begun when they purchased a building for a little over $1.1-million during the height of the real estate bubble and has decreased in value ever since. While they seem to have shed as many of their obligations as possible, debt service for that building might be a great draw on their resources. According to IRS documents, Exodus burned through $200,000 of their savings in 2010 alone. Exodus leaders plan to re-brand the organization into something more palatable to those with funds to give, and the general public. According to an Exodus source, everything is on the table to save the organization. H

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After Massachusetts congressman Barney Frank announced that he will not seek reelection next year, American Family Association (AFA) spokesman Bryan Fischer decided to celebrate Frank’s retirement by attacking the congressman for being gay. According to Right Wing Watch, on “Focal Point,” Fischer claimed that Frank may have used his prominent position to “influence” other men into becoming gay who may have later contracted AIDS. “This is a dangerous, risky, immoral, unhealthy lifestyle, and Barney Frank has been an open practitioner of a lifestyle that is condemning one young man after another to an early grave,” Fischer said. “This is not somebody to admire, this is not somebody to honor.” Fischer went on to say that Frank “modeled a lifestyle which is really a deathstyle,” wondering, “Who knows how many people were drawn or encouraged in some way by Barney Frank’s example to dabble in a lifestyle that eventually cost them their health and maybe even cost them their lives.” H

Italians Ban Mention Condoms on World AIDS Day ROME, ITALY – Italy’s state TV and radio network is at the center of a censorship controversy after a manager instructed the staff not to mention the word “condom” during programs about World AIDS Day on Thursday.
NEWS
In an email to staff, reported by Italian daily Corriere della Sera, manager Laura De Pasquale wrote that Italy’s health ministry had requested that “in no broadcast should the word condom be explicitly mentioned. We must limit ourselves to the generic concept of prevention in sexual behavior and the need to undergo HIV testing in the case of potential risk.” H
Obama Pushes for LGBT Equal Rights Abroad WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Barack Obama issued a memo to the heads of his Executive Departments and Agencies to advance human rights and safety of LGBT people abroad. Obama’s memo said: “The struggle to end discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons is a global challenge, and one that is central to the United States commitment to promoting human rights. I am deeply concerned by the violence and discrimination targeting LGBT persons around the world – whether it is passing laws that criminalize LGBT status, beating citizens simply for joining peaceful LGBT pride celebrations, or killing men, women, and children for their perceived sexual orientation. That is why I declared before heads of state gathered at the United Nations, "no country should deny people their rights because of who they love, which is why we must stand up for the rights of gays and lesbians everywhere." Under my Administration, agencies engaged abroad have already begun taking action to promote the fundamental human rights of LGBT persons everywhere. Our deep commitment to advancing the human rights of all people is strengthened when we as the United States bring our tools to bear to vigorously advance this goal.” GOP presidential contenders Rick Santorum and Rick Perry have condemned Obama’s memo. Rick Perry has issued a statement attacking the Obama administration over the memorandum issued earlier today directing the heads of Executive Departments and Agencies abroad to advance the human rights of and ensure the safety of LGBT people. Perry said in a written statement: “Just when you thought Barack Obama couldn’t get any more out of touch with America’s values, AP reports his administration wants to make foreign aid decisions based on gay rights. This administration’s war on traditional American values must stop. President Obama has again mistaken America’s tolerance for different lifestyles with an endorsement of those lifestyles. I will not make that mistake.” In recognition of Human Rights Day, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will delivered a human rights policy speech on Tuesday, December 6, hosted by the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in Geneva at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. Everything Changes They say there are two constants in this world – death and taxes. Well, there is another constant in this universe – change. As humans, we are able to adapt and take on the challenges that are put in front of us. We, as a species, have learned to adapt over thousands of years. From singlecelled organisms, to apes, and we have grown to become what we now call ourselves – Homo sapiens. We continue to learn, grow, and change. As homosexuals in this world, we too have learned to adapt. We have stepped out of the shadows of the dark alleys where we used to cruise, and we can now walk down the streets out in the open. We celebrate our pride and coming-out days. We remember those who we’ve lost, and we walk to support those who can’t walk on days like World AIDS Day. On this past December 1, approximately two thousand caring people came out to show their support for their loved ones and to continue the fight to find a cure. We have adapted to this fight. Rather than hide away and die, we come out in droves to show that we aren’t afraid of this disease, and we will no longer stand for ignorance and discrimination. Our lives have changed, as we now have strength in numbers. Change comes when you least expect it. You rarely notice small changes until something bigger happens to point them out to you. Like those times when you put on your old jeans, only to find that they don’t really fit you anymore. Time to hit the gym! Or when you see an old friend. “My how they have changed! Or is it me?” Unfortunately, most changes come quickly and unexpectedly. You never see them coming! Recently, a dear friend’s home burnt down and he lost everything.
Photos and memories--all gone in a flash. It was great to see how our friends came together and stepped up to help get our friend back on his feet. People donated clothing, dishes, and even a bed to help him out. It was incredible to see that one human trait has not and will not change-our capacity for caring and love. How you handle change is an important lesson to learn in life. With our lives hanging in the balance each and every day-foreclosures, break-ups, losing jobs, and family tragedies. We are constantly dealing with the changes that are going on around us.
DEAR EDITOR, I was surprised to read in the Florida Agenda last week that HIV/AIDS has been around since the 1930s. Your historical timeline was informational and interesting. I attended the World AIDS Day rally at the Shoppes of Wilton Manors and was pleased to see such a wonderful turnout. It seems that people are more aware these days, or are just more open about it. I hope that everyone was there to support those who live with HIV or whom they have lost, and not just to see Margaret Cho. Sincerely, Jim Politano
Dave Griffiths worse. One thing that has helped me focus more on the positive and helps guide me through my daily life, was reading “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne. (If you’re not a reader, the DVD is available at www.thesecret.tv) The book explains that our thoughts become actions and what you put out into the universe does come back to you. So if you keep on putting out negative thoughts, these are the actions that you will attract. The same goes for positive thoughts. This is known as “The Law of Attraction.” Each and every day, I try to remember… • Do something good and good things will come back to you • Remember, everything happens for a reason • Everything always works out in the end So no matter what life tries to throw at you, over the next few weeks, take some time to do something good for someone you wouldn’t normally think of. It could be the Janitor at work, or the homeless guy on the curb. If we all took a moment of our time each day to do something nice for someone less fortunate than ourselves, just think of all the great changes we may be able to make in this world! Change starts with just one thought. Its what we do with those thoughts that can change the world. You know what they say… Be the change that you want to see in this world! This holiday season, my wish for you is to stay positive—regardless of change. H
So don’t be afraid of change. Embrace it! $#*+ happens and you will feel like you have more control over the situation when you face it head on. Don’t run away from it, because often times, that just makes it

In response to the news story “Few Americans with HIV Have it Under Control” in the Florida Agenda, December 1, 2011. DEAR EDITOR, As a gay man living with HIV in America, I find it disturbing to hear that only 28% of the 1.2 Million Americans living with HIV/AIDS have it under control. Does that mean that those who have the disease don’t take their meds? Do they have access to the proper medications that they need? In these times of economic hardships, it can be difficult to get the medicines they need. So if the CDC wants to help curb the spread of this disease, why can’t they put more money into programs like ADAP or Ryan White? We’re going to war in countries most of us will never go to, and yet one of the biggest fights we’re fighting at home, is the fight against HIV. Every month, for many of us, it’s a fight
to get out of bed, let alone fight for our meds. Sincerely, K.E. In response to the news story “Ricky Martin to Join the Cast of ‘Glee’” in the Florida Agenda, December 1, 2011. Angels of Hope & Guidance An Overdue Thank You By ANTHONY JOHNSON Now that December 1st and World AIDS Day has passed, I can rest and reflect on the reason why after almost 17 years of being diagnosed HIV positive, I am able to CELEBRATE it today. It is because many amazing men, women, and children fought the fear and stigma associated with HIV and AIDS by our government and peers. These people, these advocates, these angels have given freely their time, their energy, and their hearts to assure that generations to come would not have to suffer the fate of those who came before. I wish I could list all the names of the men, women, AND children who have fought for my right to live a healthy, happy, productive life. However, there is not enough paper in the world to list all who have fought over the last 30 years nor can any monument do them justice. Their unwavering dedication and courage forced the government and healthcare providers to provide services that helped individuals like me receive care so desperately needed to survive and thrive. In fact, it is because of these advocates that the state of Florida finally released funds that will assist its residents in acquiring medications that they need to remain healthy and alive.
For the last 30 years, these advocates, these angels have brought communities together all working for the same ultimate goal, a cure for a human disease called HIV. There is no cure as of yet, no magic bullet, but these advocates promote, encourage, and demand that science be allowed to continue research and work towards discovering a vaccine and a cure. I cannot continue without also saying thank you to the many advocates that are unknown to us who work behind the scene with individuals directly affected by HIV/AIDS in the communities where they live. These are the people, the angels who volunteer their time, give of their heart, and share their love with those who many times are discouraged or dismayed due to stigma and fear. They are indiscriminative and supportive of those who live in the shadow of discrimination and ignorance. These are the people who stand with us, not against us when we walk the street at night on World AIDS Day carrying a candle for those we have lost and for the battle that we are facing ourselves. These advocates, these friends, these AMAZING ANGELS OF HOPE AND GUIDANCE have been fighting for years
to assure that generations to come will have the medications, healthcare, and dignity that is our human right. And although we have come a long way over the last 30 years in achieving this, there is a long way to go and I know that many of these angels have tired and need our help and our support in continuing this fight. This battle will not be over until every HIV positive man, woman, and child has equal access to care and services. This fight will not end until there is a vaccine for HIV and cure for AIDS. Because of this, I have joined in the fight to rid the world of stigma, fear, and discrimination that people living with HIV/AIDS are facing and to advocate for equal care and equal rights for all. I now ask of you, no CHALLENGE you to join these advocates, our angels and do what you can to help promote, encourage, and assure that the needs of all people living with HIV/AIDS are met. The only way that we as a community, as a nation, as a world can win this battle is by joining together, hand in hand, working with each other, in support of one another. Once again, to the many advocates, the ANGELS HOPE AND GUIDANCE that
fight and have fought for my right and the right of others to live a healthy, happy, productive life, I want to say thank you. Know that I love you for allthat you have done and still do to this day. I will never forget that you are all my ANGELS OF HOPE AND GUIDANCE! H

tions coming in your direction? Is it simply based out of envy or jealousy or worse still, simple amusement? Think hard about the mess that breaking a glass window would cause and imagine the messes that may be created by making statements of someone that are not true. Ask yourself if it were the other way around and you had to find the courage to stand up to lies told about you, if you could do that or would even want to have to. Our reputations and even our very lives are very much like glass. We look through every day not thinking of how fragile they can be. We take for granted the impact that can be made if that delicate thing we call reputation is damaged. If there is something that offends you about someone, then speak frankly and plainly. Speak on fact and not speculation, but above all, stop uttering anything out of selfish motivation or ignorance which may cause damage. I do not believe that it is likely that every person we encounter or know will grow upon us or earn our affections or our respect. However, we must not act against the goodness of who we are in an attempt to alienate them. We must not grab the hammer of lies and rumor and break the glass of another’s life, or good name, or soul. Broken glass is a very hard thing to clean up and I promise you that try as you might, you will never be able to pick up all of the pieces. And attempt to clean it up with your hands, you may assuredly be cut in the process. H
“Broken Glass” By AJ CROSS Have you ever made a statement about someone that was not true, whatever your reason? Have you ever repeated something that you heard about someone of which you, yourself, had no proof ? Rumors can be dangerous things and once they are out, even if by guilt you try to set the record straight, the damage that is done is almost irreparable. Go into your house and grab a hammer; walk to any window in your home; take the hammer and slam it as hard as you can into a window. What happened? Did the window glass break into hundreds or thousands of pieces? Now what if I tell you to pick every single piece of glass that has fallen to the ground. You can’t. Try as you might, you would not get every piece. That is the damage of a rumor. It spreads much further than your intention and the damage to the soul of the victim of the rumor is like that of the broken window. It is almost impossible to repair. No matter how strong the person, the looks and whispers hurt. To walk around and have peoples’ impressions of you based on a rumor as opposed to truth hurts. What is the purpose or achievement of attacking someone so viciously that there is almost no means of defense? Is it to give you greater position over them? Is it an avoidance of assumptions or specula-

Word Play
Finding the Closet Door By CHriSTiAN AlexANder I was raised with faith – Roman Catholicism that is. When I was figuring out my sexuality, I was lead to believe I was going to burn in hell before I even got out of bed for having desires. Back then, they weren’t even desires – hell, I was 8 or 9 years old. Do you even have urges at that age? I just knew I was different from the rest of the small pack of students I was allowed to play with. The boys played their sports games with the other boys at recess, whereas I choose to play with the girls. What games we played, I do not recall. I just knew I was more comfortable with them than I was with the boys who seemed (forgive me Sister Eileen) hell bent on winning. My eighth grade graduation was a turning point of sorts. No more nuns, no more priests, no more going to church every Sunday to go through the motions of an hour-long Mass of sitting, standing and kneeling. It was June and in 1986 fashion (before I appreciated what fashion was), I didn’t want to graduate in the typical blue blazer and plaid tie. I forced my Mother’s hand and picked out a suit more appropriate for the day – a la Don Johnson on Miami Vice. White pants, white lace up Capezio shoes, pastel colered shirt, and a stop sign red jacket to tie it all together. I had been to my Mother’s hairdresser that day and he Aqua-Netted my hair into a preDonald Trump do guaranteed not to move even through a hurricane. Suffice it to say, I stood out like a Pink Flamingo at a Pigeon contest receiving my diploma. The girls thought I was awesome, the boys were jealous, and I couldn’t see any of it because I refused to where my Coke-bottle glasses as they would ruin my new look. To the dismay of the Nuns, curious looks from other parents and stares from my school mates, I proudly walked up to receive my graduation certificate. High school began in June of that year as was the custom and I found myself in a completely different world. My parents, long since divorced, could not agree to send me to another private school, so I found
myself among the masses of teenagers who weren’t sure what was going on or where they were supposed to be, myself among them. Gym class proved my breaking point. We were supposed to choose what we wanted to take, and there was quite a variety. But no matter which I choose, I still ended up in a locker room with the other boys changing and showering. I felt extremely uncomfortable, yet I still wasn’t completely sure why. I just knew that I should not be in a room full of naked and half-naked boys bantering about who was the best hitter or kicker or whatever, when all my eyes seemed to do was glance towards their mid-sections and feel embarrassed because of it. Shortly thereafter, I ditched gym clas altogether, having a family friend who happened to be a doctor write notes for me, excusing me from the rest of the classes. This same doctor, along with the help of an over worked secretary in the Principal’s office, kept me out of gym class through the remainder of my years in high school. They offered me swimming; I quickly produced a note saying I was allergic to chlorine. They offered me softball; I got a note from Dr. Magic saying it was bad for my back. The secretary I worked for loved it, I did her job in place of gym class and she got to take lots of coffee breaks. In doing so, I was able to divert my (I then thought) misplaced feeling for certain boys whom, shall we say, exceeded the others in the locker room and not necessarily in gym class. This went on until graduation, (which I achieved with honors), and it wasn’t until years later, I began to question the FAITH I had been reared to know. If I was GAY, I’d burn in hell before I woke up. Had I chosen the path that had been laid before me, I probably would have married the one girl who had gaven me a “hickey” before I was 14. As the sands drift down to 40, I find myself wondering which path would have been better… a life of perfect lies, or my life of imperfect appearances. Which path would you have chosen? Until we meet again, Christian H

were settled out-of-court but the terms were not disclosed. Later reports indicated that although not a plaintiff, there was a potential fifth accuser who participated in the settlement discussions. As it turns out, these allegations were the most current controversy Long had been involved. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported in August 2005 that between 1997 to 2000, Long received more than $3.07 million worth of compensation and benefits from his eponymous non-profit charity, Bishop Eddie Long Ministries Inc. Long contended that the charity did not solicit donations from members but instead gained its income from royalties, speaking fees and several large donations. In 2007, Senator Chuck Grassley announced an investigation into the taxexempt status of six ministries including that under the leadership Long by the United States Senate Committee on Finance. After being fired by the Ford Motor Company for alleged financial irregularities, Long moved to Atlanta to study theology and became the pastor of a small Jonesboro, GA church. In 1987, he became the pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, which at the time had around 300 members. Under his charismatic leadership, membership grew to 25,000. Long also reached millions more through the church’s web site and television ministry. Long was consecrated a bishop in 1994 by the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship, a relatively new movement within African-American Baptist churches that embraces Pentecostal beliefs. The Atlanta JournalConstitution reported that Long's title of “Bishop” comes from a break-away Baptist organization founded by selfappointed “bishops.” In 2006, Long was chosen by the family of Martin Luther King, Jr. to host and officiate the funeral for Mrs. Coretta Scott King, wife of the late civil rights pioneer. The event was attended by four Presidents (George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Jimmy Carter). Long was a prominent supporter of George W. Bush’s faith-based initiatives. His ministry received a $1 million grant from the U.S. Administration of Children and Families. Support for Long has shrunk dramatically over this past year since his sexual coercion settlement was announced and Rev. Bernice King, the youngest daughter of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. has left the church. Another Baptist minister in the area estimated that attendance in church has dropped to between 4,000 and 8,000 people. However, a large number of Long’s followers have vowed to remain faithful to the church and Long and will remain active in the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. H

Snowbiz Now!
She’s My Dad? By NICHOLAS SNOW Born the son of one of the world’s most famous and celebrated authors, Lannie Woulff is now a transgendered grandmother in her sixties. Huh? Yes, Lannie’s upbringing was “more a bit out of the ordinary, mostly stemming from the fact of my father’s literary stature.” Her father is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Herman Wouk, a detail she does not volunteer readily. “One summer at the beach, when I was around four years old, I was hanging out with a couple of the other little boys and for some reason I just blurted out, ‘Oh, I wish I’d been born a girl!’ As you can imagine, they laughed like crazy and made fun of me and went around telling the entire gang that I was a sissy,” revealed Lannie. “This happened long before GLBT liberation, back when it was fatal to admit something like that. Naturally, the lesson I took away from that experience was to keep my mouth shut and stuff my feelings. I went deep into the closet, locked myself in with denial and substance abuse, and stayed there for almost thirty years.” “In my mid-forties,” Lannie continued, “when I finally learned how to work a computer and go online, I soon discovered that there were many others like me, who felt the same way. I was stunned,
frightened, fascinated, intrigued, and horrified. I’d barely ever heard the word ‘transsexual.’ But beyond any doubt, I knew this was my truth. Nothing was ever the same after that. Despite the tidal wave of disruptions and turmoil that ensued, I felt absolutely liberated.” Having had my own misconceptions over the years, I asked Lannie what she believes are the most common misperceptions about transgender individuals. “Aside from thinking that we all look like Terry Bradshaw in a peignoir,” she responded, “I think the biggest misconception people have is that we are all gay. But in fact, GID – Gender Identity Disorder – is about how you feel in your heart and your mind, and has nothing to do with sexual preference/orientation. “One day as I sat pondering the paradoxical realities of switching genders, a thought suddenly flashed into my mind: ‘What if a male-to-female transsexual had unknowingly fathered a child back in his pre-transition days?’ In that instant, I knew I had discovered the makings of a whopping good suspense yarn, and ‘She’s My Dad’ was born. “A cautionary tale about the consequences of blind prejudice, ‘She’s My Dad’ tells the story of a transsexual woman named Nickie Farrell, who,
returning to her Northern Virginia alma mater to teach English to a new generation of scholars, is unaware that in the nearby town lives a son from an illicit love affair she had during her male undergraduate days,” explains the official synopsis. Lannie, as I mentioned, does not like to talk about her famous father. Is this because she believes she would be perceived to be exploiting him? She responded, “People are free to perceive what they wish. Especially in today’s celebrity-obsessed world. I place a high value on privacy, as does everyone else in my family. Both of my parents were kind enough to read ‘She’s My Dad.’ I was enormously pleased by their reactions. “Based solely on my own experience, I would simply say have patience, and be realistic. Patience is never an easy thing, but a hasty gender transition can prove absolutely fatal,” she advises other transgendered individuals. “Take your time, do it by the book, and don’t cut medical corners. Just because you have the resources to buy a new set of genitalia within a year doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good idea. As for being realistic, never forget that womanhood isn’t a fantasy, or a fetish, but a simple fact. If
your idea of being female is a non-stop estrogen-fueled giggle of high heels, blue eye shadow, and sex, you’re on the wrong track. I’ve never yet met a woman who got turned on all day because she was wearing a bra. Forget the glamour and nonsense, and remember that women are just people.” “She’s My Dad” is available at the usual online retailers – Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and so forth – in hardcover, paperback and Kindle formats. Become a fan at Facebok.com/IolantheWoulff. For video interviews, search YouTube with the author’s name or visit www.iolanthewoulff.com. H

San Diego West Coast Foodie Wonderland By PAUL RUBIO There’s a lot of talk about “foodies” these days. This relatively new entry to the urban dictionary has become one of American society’s most overused words, albeit with good reason. Finally we have a politically correct term that accounts for our unapologetic indulgence in our greatest fat kid fantasies, extra reason to go Paula-Dean-heavy or Mary-KateOlsen-light on the butter, and an excuse to take meticulous note of the ingredients and preparation of food (without being classified as clinically food obsessed). It’s no longer shameful to travel distances far and wide with the sole purpose of a personal feeding frenzy; in fact, it’s now trendy and almost mainstream. That said, in my global travels and 365-days-a-year restaurant lifestyle, I’ve found only a handful of cities anchored by such great eats to warrant a foodie pilgrimage – none more so than the San Diego area. It seems that central and northern California’s farm-to-table revolution has trickled down to the state’s southern reaches, gaining some extra personality, audacity, and robustness on the way. Think: blow-your-mind experiential gastronomy with drink lists to match. Below are three restaurants that should headline your foodie bucket list and will send you packing your loosest jeans for a west coast eating and drinking orgy. Flavor (www.flavordelmar.com, 858-755-3663, Del Mar). Doling out breathtaking views of the SoCal coastline through its panoramic glass windows, this Über-creative restaurant plays up the yin and yang elements of gastronomy, with acclaimed Chef Brian Redzikowski engineering some wildly new taste sensa-
tions. The meal begins with house bread and butter accompanied by a quarta of rotating salts (e.g. black garlic, honey jalapeno, sage, and basil). Next up, “raw,” and “warm” starters like the “Tartare of Hawaiian Ahi” with yuzu aioli, black garlic, and chili oil and “braised local baby beets” over a citrus-beet puree, Maytag blue cheese and toasted macadamia nuts. For the main course – divine interventions of “surf,” “turf,” and veg, such as the “local halibut en sous vide” over rock shrimp and “Meyer lemon risotto, pancetta, pea tendril salad, and saffron hollandaise.” Flavor’s idyllic upper story location means a front row ticket for the best sunset in town, and naturally a few sunset libations not to be missed, like “Salt & Pepper,” grey goose, yellow bell pepper, lime, agave, sprinkled salt and pepper garnish and “Tangerine Jalapeno,” tequila, Cointreau, tangerine, lemon, lime, house made jalapeno puree, and a chili-lime salt rim. Bursting with Flavor, this is American’s raging “foodie and cocktail revolution” at its best. Grant Grill (www.grantgrill.com, 619-744-2077, Downtown San Diego). Grant Grill proves that you don’t need to be a newbie to be a foodie favorite. For six decades, the renowned restaurant of The US Grant Hotel has consistently reinvented its menu with each approaching season, letting the creative juices simmer through the season’s top produce and ingredients. The 3, 4, or 5 course monthly tasting menu (with or without wine pairings) offers varying degrees of indulgence, and a divergence from other seasonally returning favorites like the “Dungeness Crab Risotto,” the “Grant Grill Mock Turtle Soup” and the “Frontiere All
Natural Buffalo Loin” with Butterball potatoes, Maui onion rings, King trumpet mushrooms, and Marrow gremolata. Despite an evolving menu, the restaurant stays delightfully true to its circa 1951 roots, with the dark and elegant feel of a gentleman’s club that transforms into an old school speakeasy on weekends. It should come as no surprise then that the Grant Grill serves as a drinking institution in San Diego. Manager-Sommelier Jeff Josenhans is regionally famous for his wine and cocktail menu. Josenhans says the trick to a fabulous cocktail is “ingenuity and balance,” followed by a process of “sketching and experimenting.” Josenhans reveals that a major synergy of forces merits the Grill’s house of libations reputation; but house made syrups, reductions, and daring ingredients don’t hurt. This holiday season, Josenhans brings back the “Smashing Pumpkin” from the Grill’s Food Network fame – pumpkin infused rum, all spice liqueur, Ginger liqueur, Meyer lemon, Grand Marnier, and cardamom bitters. Now, I’ll toast to that!
Searsucker (www.searsucker.com, 619-233-7327, Downtown San Diego). It’s a magical equation of originality plus calories at Searsucker – the colossal, vibrant, and trendy eatery that’s still commanding a hefty wait nearly a year after opening. The menu breaks things down simply into categories of: “bites,” “smalls,” “greens,” “ocean,” “ranch,” “farm,” and “milk + sugar,” further revealing pithy descriptions of the dishes themselves, like “farm bird lollipops + snake oil + blue fondue” and “crab cake ‘carb free.’” Yet these short descriptions are loaded like a one pound baked potato! The “crab cake ‘carb free’” is indeed rich in protein, but it’s also coated in lemon aioli, tomato jam, and cilantro reduction. It’s more than a nice surprise; it’s heaven on a plate! Similarly, the “butternut” arrives as rich, squash lasagna; and the “mahi mahi” as a beautiful presentation of fresh fish over a bed of fried onions and chipotle, topped with balsamic reduction and blue cheese. No matter what you order, Searsucker is an all out love affair with food and all things caloric! H

Rockin’ Burgers No Pretense, No Ceremony – Just Darn Good Food By TIM SLIVINSKI I first visited and reviewed Rok:Brgr about nine months ago when they were still a fairly new kid on the block and there was a lot of positive buzz about the new gastropub in Himmarshee. Since that visit, many other gourmet burger spots have burst onto the scene, and at times, it almost seems like a sort of “burger wars” has descended upon us. I decided to return to Rok:Brgr to find out whether my initial impression—which was excellent indeed—would be confirmed. On a Sunday evening at about 7:30p.m., we arrived at Rok:Brgr to find the pub filled with people and lively conversation. There was not a seat to be had at the bar, but very quickly a young server came over and informed us she could put two small tables together for the four of us. If crowds are a testament to a restaurant’s quality, then Rok:Brgr has nothing to worry about! We ordered cocktails and specialty beers from the menu’s impressive list and began to discuss our level of hunger. We all decided that a couple of starters were needed as it looked as though it would take us some time to read and to decide from the menu’s many burger options. Tempura Battered Zuchini ($6.00) and Fried Pickles ($5.00) were
ordered as we settled in to sip our drinks and discuss our options. Our starters arrived in timely fashion, and the kitchen at Rok:Brgr knows how to handle deep frying. Neither of our choices were at all greasy; instead they were delightfully crunchy on the exterior and soft and juicy on the interior. The dips that accompanied each choice, a garlic aioli for the zucchini and a smoked ranch dip for the pickles, added a bit of cool zest to the crunchy goodies we had chosen. We liked both of them. When it was time to order sandwiches, I opted for the Chicken Dance ($12.00), a ten-ounce chicken burger topped with provolone cheese, hickory smoked bacon, tomato, lettuce, and red onion on a sesame bun. When it arrived with its own little fryer basket of hand-cut French fries – which are superb– it was a sight to behold. I cut it in half so I could manage it better, and that was first sign that this was going to be good. The chicken burger was juicy, not at all dried out as can often be the case with poultry. Flavorful and juicy, it was messy to eat, but that’s part of the fun at Rok:Brgr. No pinkies up here! I particularly liked the mayo as an alternative to traditional catsup and mustard. It added flavor while not overpowering the chicken or the cheese.
jean’s Terrine Ardéchoise kitchen Vero, my partner was born in Ardèche where the cliffs go as high as 1,000 feet. The river Ardèche is the largest natural canyon in Europe, and there are dolmens and menhirs, that were erected thousands of years ago. We have canoed down the Ardèche many times, and pâté was almost always in our back pack with a fresh baguette and bottle of Côtes du Rhône. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be giving the recipe to Americans in South Florida! Pâté (pronounced pah-TAY) can be a smooth “mousse’’ or a chunky “terrine”. Be it one or the other pâté is simply a mixture of seasoned, base ingredients. Beef, pork, liver, seafood, wild game, poultry, and vegetables are all candidates for pâté. It may be served hot or cold, molded or unmolded, and is usually served as a first course or appetizer. Pâté can be cooked in a crust too, in which case it’s referred to as pâté en croûte. • ½ lb ground pork • ½ lb ground veal • ¼ cup of chicken livers coarsely chopped • 2 eggs • Chopped parsley • 1 onion, chopped small • 1 clove of garlic chopped small • Salt and pepper • 1 pinch of freshly grated nutmeg • 1 small glass of dry white wine • 1/2 cup butcher block black pepper
• 1 packet of gelatin Preheat your oven to 395 °. In a bowl, mix all the ingredients (except the butcher block black pepper which is for the garnish) and finish with the white wine. Transfer to a greased cake mould and bake for 75 minutes. Make the gele. Add the black pepper to the gele and pour over the top of the pâté. Allow to cool and refrigerate overnight. Loosen the pâté from the mould using a knife and wrap in cling film. You can freeze a portion too, for later munchies. Serve with baguette, or your favorite bread, or crackers. You are the chef ! H

The sudden quiet at the table let me know that everyone, not just me, was enjoying his selected sandwich. One friend built a burger from the Burger Bar side of the menu, starting with a certified Angus beef patty ($9.00) and then adding cave aged gruyere ($1.50), exotic mushrooms ($1.50), and avocado ($.50). He ordered it cooked medium, and it arrived perfectly grilled. He nodded “yes” when asked, indicating his delight in his personally built burger. The boyfriend ordered a feature in honor of the holiday: a Thanksgiving burger ($12.00). A turkey burger was topped with cranberry cheddar cheese, stuffing, and the traditional toppings. He loved it and its texture and flavor combinations. The fourth in our party decided that Las Olas ($16.00) was calling his name. This one offers a ten-ounce waygu kobe beef burger that is topped by caveaged gruyere, caramelized onions, and garlic aioli on a brioche bun. Once again, it was grilled to perfectly pink medium. He commented that the onions were the star as their sweetness offered a great flavor element to his sandwich. So, am I still impressed with Rok:Brgr?
ROK:BRGR 208 SW 2nd Street., Ft. Lauderdale, FL 954-525-7656
Absolutely. It’s a fun, noisy, happening place with food that fits its funky pub atmosphere. Sometimes we all just need to put down the knives and forks and eat with our hands. That is exactly what Rok:Brgr invites you to do. No pretense, no ceremony – just darn good food and a fun vibe that almost dares you not to have a good time! H

The Secret to Building Massive Guns By TOM BONANTI
Hint: It has to do with working those terrific triceps!
A couple of weeks ago I shared with you some excellent tips and gave you a dynamite routine to develop beefier biceps by Christmas. Follow my advice and I can guarantee your success. No doubt, bulging biceps with those to die for peaks are impressive! But the real secret to having great arms is to work harder and longer on your triceps (the back of your upper arms). Triceps make up two-thirds of your upper arm, therefore it is logical that the bigger and more defined these muscles are, the more massive your arms will look, from the front, to the sides and from behind. The triceps are responsible for the movement of extension of the elbow and produce motion of the forearm. Because of their larger size, triceps require more effort and time than the smaller biceps muscles. Hit triceps once a week using 3-4 exercises of 3-4 sets of 8-12 repetitions for strength and maintenance. Work them at least twice to three times per week using the same formula to add mass and to build them. Use free weights for triceps to give you a better range of motion and to produce a fuller muscle. Throw in a machine exercise every now and then for isolation and to break up monotony. Always make sure you get a good stretch for tri’s especially as you conclude the workout. Stretching helps bring out the separations and detail in the muscle. Here are some dynamite exercises that will leave your triceps feeling pumped after only a few sessions. Whenever you are working a muscle group, always include at least one exercise that will take the muscle group through its full range of motion. Close-grip bench presses will do this for triceps. Lie face up on a flat bench, feet firmly planted on the floor. Take a barbell or E Z curl bar from the rack. Use a narrow grip so that your hands are only 2-3 inches apart. Keeping your elbows close to your body, lower the weight to your lower sternum, and immediately push upwards. Always begin with
a light warm-up set. Triceps extensions are a classic. Start this exercise by holding a lat machine bar with your hands 2-8 inches apart. Now press downwards from your chin until your arms are straight. Return and repeat. Most bodybuilders keep their elbows tucked in at their sides during this movement. A few deliberately hold the elbows out to the sides and lean into the exercise. The choice is yours. This exercise can also be performed with a rope instead of a straight bar or lat machine bar. Bent-over triceps kick backs are great for isolating each of the triceps. Hold a dumbbell in one hand and hold on to a rack or bench with the other hand. Raise and lower (kick back) the dumbbell at an even rate, keeping the upper arm in line with your torso and parallel to the floor. Keep your upper arm tight against your waist throughout. Be careful not to over use your wrist as you kick the weight back and extend the elbow. Lying triceps extensions or “skull crushers,” as they sometimes called, are killers. Lie on your back on a flat bench and hold a barbell or E Z curl bar at arms length above you. Lower it slowly to the forehead and raise the bar again to arm’s length. This is a more advanced exercise and you may have to wait until your tri’s are ready for this one. During your workouts, do not waste time. When you’re working triceps or any muscle group, remember to stretch and move around between sets. For more tips on how to get bigger, beefier arms by Christmas, give me a shout at trainertomb@aol.com! H
