“We Don’t Want To Be Number One.” By CLIFF DUNN Sheriff Al Lamberti says that the communities he polices are diverse, vibrant, and thriving, but he remains deeply concerned and troubled that Broward County ranks first among Florida counties for reported hate crimes. “Simply put: we don’t want to be number one in terms of these stats,” Lamberti emphasized. The sheriff, entering his fourth year in office, says that the numbers tell several stories. The county’s number one ranking, Lamberti offers, is in some ways the result of hate crimes victims coming forward to report their attacks for the first time, inundating law enforcement’s reporting apparatus and giving a top-heavy statistic for crimes that went unreported or underreported all along. “By establishing a Hate Crimes/Anti-Bias Task Force, we’re actively encouraging citizens who have been victims to report on these crimes,” Lamberti notes. “That puts the focus on the numbers for BSO [Broward Sheriff’s Office]. The crimes themselves are deplorable,” the sheriff cautions, “but we want potential victims to report their attacks, or harassment.” “At the same time,” he adds, “we want the state’s other police agencies to follow our lead and establish their own hate crimes task forces. When that happens, you will see a spike in their numbers, too. But it’s important to make victims know they have official assistance available to them, no matter whether they’re gay, or homeless, or had a ethnically-motivated hate crime perpetrated upon them.” The state of Florida defines a hate crime as an act committed or attempted by one person or group against another --or that person’s property --that in any way constitutes an expression of hatred toward the victim based on his or her personal characteristics. A report issued last month by Florida's attorney general records 149 hate crimes being committed statewide for the year 2010, the last complete year for which statistics are available. Those numbers are slightly higher than the ones from 2009, but a vast improvement over 1992’s record of 395 hate crimes. The attorney general’s report details the number as well as the

types of hate crimes committed throughout the Sunshine State. Of hate crimes committed, nearly half were racially motivated--over 46 percent-while more than one-in-five, or 21.5 percent, resulted from the victim’s sexual orientation. Religious beliefs account for 19.5 percent of hate crimes statewide, followed by ethnically-motivated crimes at 12.7 percent. Attorney General Pam Bondi said the hate crimes stats were reported by law enforcement agencies across Florida. This data was then provided to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Both Broward and Miami-Dade counties saw the number of hate crimes reported drop in 2010. Miami-Dade experienced a drop in its 2009 numbers, from 17 to 11. Broward County again led the state in overall reported hate crimes with 19 cases, three less than in 2009. Of the 32 reported hate crimes in Florida that were motivated by sexual orientation, eight of them--25 percent--occurred in Broward. Said Lamberti: “Broward is the most diverse county in Florida. Clearly, though, that statistic of number one is proof that we’re not all getting along with each other.” Lamberti says he is encouraged by the response to his department’s efforts of law enforcement agencies and lawmakers
outside of Florida, including members of Congress. “When Maryland was looking to increase the classes protected under that state’s hate crimes laws, they looked closely at our efforts and internal practices in investigating hate crimes against the homeless and others, and used these as a model for retooling their laws,” he recalls. “It was gratifying, but at the same time, you say to yourself, ‘they are using our case to improve their own legal protections for victims, why isn’t the same being done here in our own state?’” Lamberti and his office’s efforts paid off when Florida lawmakers got the message. “There was a sense,” Lamberti remembers, “that there had already been efforts to tackle this before. I said to the people who were helping us, ‘I haven’t tried before,’ and we used the clout of this office and the support of law enforcement to spearhead what was a legislative effort. It was gratifying.” The sheriff acknowledges the work ahead. He admits that many crimes go unreported. But he believes that he has put a system in place that can adapt to the needs of victims and challenging conditions. One reason for his optimism is his choice of ‘Broward Hate Crimes’ continues on Page 03

In an interview with the Chattanooga Times Free Press, Fowler insisted that "the purpose is to stop bullying, not create special classes of people who are more important than others." Fowler, a former Republican state senator, said LGBT students are "not the only people who get insulted. The thing we need to concentrate on is not whether the characteristics of the victim justify being protected but on the conduct of the person engaging in the bullying while respecting constitutional rights." That does not sit well with the Tennessee Equality Project, which says that legislation that lacks protections for gay and transgender students would lack teeth, and extend a "license to bully" to students who might claim a religious exemption. WM Main Street Presents “A Day in the Life of Wilton Manors” WILTON MANORS, FL – On Thursday, Jan. 5, members of the Wilton Manors Main Street (WMMS) organization coordinated a day-long photo shoot featuring the top 100 businesses, people, and activities of the city’s merchants and professional offices. Tom Tabor, WMMS vice president and board member, and several colleagues spent the day from 6 a.m. to midnight photographing business people and their staffs “doing good.” Their efforts will be collected and presented at an event hosted by The Manor Restaurant and Entertainment Complex on Wednesday, Jan. 18, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tabor says the event is meant to highlight the unsung achievements of the Island City’s merchants and businesses, and to promote the city to the rest of the nation and beyond. “This is a lot of fun in a very good cause,” Tabor said at around 10 p.m., between photo shoots. “We want our friends in business to join us at The Manor on the 18th for the event, and to see how the rest of the
“This entire agency wants to know if hate crimes are being committed.” Broward’s standing as highest-ranked county for hate crimes is also drawing attention to the stats and reporting of Florida’s other 66 counties and their jurisdictions. Although Miami-Dade County reported 11 hate crimes for 2010, its largest municipality, Miami--the state’s second largest city--reported no hate crimes for the third consecutive year. Broward Sheriff Lamberti refuses to throw any other police agency under the bus, but he is realistic about his and other departments’ reporting. “I want the rest of the state--and the nation, for that matter-to follow Broward’s lead and set up a system and the manpower for honest reporting and investigating,” said Lamberti. “We look at a crime, or a possible crime, and don’t in any way mitigate or downplay the facts. If a crime looks like a hate crime, then that’s how it is investigated. We don’t investigate an attack against two gay men, for example, as a robbery. We investigate it with the presumption that it is a crime of the most serious magnitude. The facts of the case may bear out that it is, in fact, a robbery, but we will investigate all elements of the case to ascertain both what it is, and what it isn’t.” “As far as some places reporting ‘zero’ hate crimes, I find that a little hard to believe. I can’t comment on what transpires anyplace else but this office, but we don’t sweep stats under the rug,” Lamberti insisted. H

Partner Registry Push In Orange County ORLANDO, FL – LGBT activists in Orange County, Florida have increased pressure on Mayor Teresa Jacobs to acknowledge the positive reviews for a proposed county-wide domestic partner registry. Some fear Jacobs may be planning to oppose it. Organizers plan to flood Jacobs with personal stories, adding to the positive feedback she has received from Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, Orange County Comptroller Martha Haynie, and members of her own legal staff. According to the Orlando Sentinel, the registry, which was approved by Orlando leaders last month, doesn’t carry the legal weight of a marriage or civil union, but it bestows a handful of rights in certain situations, such as allowing visitation at a hospital or to make funeral arrangements after a loved one’s death. Supporters are eager for the county to offer a similar provision. H

Australian Tennis Great Says She’s Pro-Gay, but Anti-Gay Marriage By PhoeBe Moses MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA Australian tennis legend Margaret Court said this week that while she supports gay rights, her religious views prevent her from supporting same-sex marriage. In an interview with Reuters on January 11, Court, a 24-times grand slam singles champion and a pastor at Victory Life Centre Church in Perth, Australia, said "I actually love homosexual people. I do not have anything against them.” But her views on same-sex marriage can be found “in the scriptures,” she said, adding that “the bible will always be the TV guide to my life. I believe marriage is something between a man and a woman." "To dismantle this sole definition of marriage and try to legitimize what God calls abominable sexual practices that include sodomy, reveals our ignorance as to the ills that come when society is forced to accept law that violates their very own God-given nature of what is
right and what is wrong," Court told an interviewer. The 69-year-old Court has long been on-record as opposing same-sex marriage. Her views came under attack recently by retired women's tennis champions Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King after an interview in
U.S. Justice Department Redefines Rape
New Definition Includes Male Victims By RoRy BaRBaRossa WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Justice Department has, after more than 80 years, changed its definition of what constitutes rape: “The penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim,” the new definition states. Since 1927, rape has been federally defined as “the carnal knowledge of a woman, forcibly and against her will.”
That included penetration of a woman’s vagina, but excluded oral or anal penetration and the rape of men. Now “rape” will not be defined by the gender of the victim nor of the perpetrator. The new definition will include assaults in which a victim cannot give consent because the individual has been incapacitated by drugs or alcohol, is under the age of consent, or is mentally or physically incapable of consent, the Justice Department said. Pope: Gay Marriage and Adoption Threaten Future of Human Race VATICAN CITY, ROME - In a thinly veiled attack upon the institutions of gay marriage and same-sex adoption, Pope Benedict XVI warned this week that progressive values threaten the long-term prospects for the human race, and that the world’s ills are a sign of divine displeasure. “The present moment is sadly marked by a profound disquiet and the various crises – economic, political and social – are a dramatic expression of this,” the Pope said at a gathering of international diplomats this week in Vatican City. During his annual “state of the world” speech on Monday, Benedict, who heads the world’s 1.1 billion Roman Catholics, told an audience that, “Policies which undermine the family threaten human dignity and the future of humanity itself.” As leader of the world’s largest Christian denomination, the pontiff rules the Holy See, a city-state centered upon Vatican City, a district of Rome. His annual address to the 180 diplomats comprising the Vatican diplomatic corps included a denunciation of samesex marriage: “The family, based on the marriage of a man and a woman,” said the 84-year old pope, adding that the
family “is not a simple social convention, but rather the fundamental cell of every society.” Benedict, who succeeded to the papacy in 2005, also condemned what he considers a permissive global attitude towards reproductive rights, decrying societies that “not only permit, but at times even promote, abortion for reasons of convenience or for questionable medical motives.” During the same address, Benedict asked for “the recognition of the inalienable dignity of each human person and of his or her fundamental rights,” although in this case he was referring to the dignity and rights of people in the Middle East, and the “Arab Spring” uprisings that happened last year. Living Each Day Like It’s Your First
January 12, 2012
Cliff Dunn There’s a school project that has been inducing yawns, and other, more visceral responses, from boys and girls for longer than I can recall. It involves writing your own epitaph, and often includes advice such as this oft-regurgitated gem: live each day as if it could be your last. The sentiment, of course, is commendable: that we should approach each day of our existence as if we were--and alas we are--on borrowed time, and make the most of each moment and experience, until the very last. (Dylan Thomas made a similar urging when he advised in verse not to “go quietly into that good night;” Robin Williams did likewise, if more frenetically, with his “carpe diem” admonishments in “The Dead Poets Society.”) The problem with living each day as if there wasn’t another to follow is that it saps a vital sense of anticipation, which in itself generates energy and vitality, from the equation. Laudable as it may be to wish to die without regrets, I wonder how much good we might each accomplish if we acted in a fashion that we could also live without regrets. The character ‘Jackie,’ a lovable old rogue, notes in the 1998 Irish indie film, “Waking Ned Divine:” “What a wonderful thing it would be
to visit your own funeral. To sit at the front and hear what was said, maybe say a few things yourself. The words that are spoken at a funeral are spoken too late for the man who is dead.” Indeed. And the man who is dead is past the point of being able to make the rest of his life a beginning instead of an ending. My pal Alejandro Kalaf--“Chachi” to friends-spends his non-working hours helping the differently-advantaged, whether entering the Smart Ride, or working at a food bank, or donating his time and energies to any of a number of worthwhile organizations. What I didn’t realize until recently is that, all clichés aside, he is really doing this for selfish motives. “I want to attract friends, business associates, and romantic interests that have the same goals as I do, but I want to bring the kind of energy that reinforces the positive things about me that I want to build upon,” he told me. This is ‘enlightened self-interest’ at its best, a win-win situation, with the “winners” being those who benefit from Chachi’s efforts, and, of course, the man himself, who enjoys the non-fiduciary returns on his investment in others. Krishan Manners, president of Wilton Manors Main Street (WMMS), is a familiar face to many people, particularly business- and community-minded folks, in the Island City. While you might not be able to recite the many
civic accomplishments he has helped facilitate, the fruits of his labors, and those of his colleagues at WMMS, can be seen in the many public works projects that grace and beauty the gayborhood. I know he has bad days, but I would be hard-pressed--and this is no mere platitude--to identify a single time I could not reach out to him for assistance with an answer to a question, or the name of a city official, or just to see a friendly face in this often “Lord of the Flies” world in which we live. Has anyone ever seen Carl Marzola of Atlantic Properties International when he wasn’t wearing a smile that could light up a city? I have started a “change jar” so I can drop a quarter into it for every smile of Carl’s that “I catch” from him (whether he gets a cut of that change remains to be seen). My intention is not to embarrass any of these terrific guys in any way, but they are among the people I am proud to know who are living and acting as if each day is their first, with a joy and vitality that is catching, if we will only allow ourselves to be caught. “The words that are spoken at a funeral are spoken too late for the man who is dead.” Here’s to living the first day of the rest of your life each and every day. “A Day in the Life of Wilton Manors:” True Tales of the Island City, Told in Pictures Cliff Dunn WILTON MANORS, FL – Visitors to Wilton Drive last Thursday, Jan. 5, may have noticed a familiar face, or one that became increasingly familiar as the day went on. Tom Tabor, board member and vice president of Wilton Manors Main Street (WMMS) and a crew of volunteers and photographers decamped up and down the length of Wilton Drive, part of a day-long photo shoot coordinated by the notfor-profit organization and featuring the top 100 businesses, people, and activities of the city’s merchants and professional offices. They started at 6 a.m., and went on well into the night. “I never thought I would have so much fun,” said Tabor, a retired businessman and activist with WMMS who, along with several colleagues, hiked the length and breadth of Wilton Manor’ main drag, capturing businesses at work--and in some instances, play--for a presentation “A Day in the Life of Wilton Manors.” The final results will be shown at a lunch event hosted at The Manor Restaurant and Entertainment Complex on Wednesday, Jan. 18, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tabor says he never felt so welcome. “The working press and photographers enjoy a degree of access that, frankly, I wasn’t sure I would have,” Tabor recalls. “There was so much enthusiasm for this project, and we hope this translates into friends and supporters coming out to support the finished product on Jan. 18.” More information about, and reservations for, “A Day in the Life of Wilton Manors” can be made online at WiltonManorsMainStreet.org/Focus.

‘Til Death Stay They Parted: Washington State Lawmakers on Opposite Sides of Same-Sex Marriage By RoRy BaRBaRossa OLYMPIA, WA Last week, the state’s top lawmakers were divided over what priority to give the same-sex marriage debate at a time Washington is facing a budget crisis. Republican leaders threatened to bring budget talks to a standstill if Democrats insist on making a stand on “social issues.” State Senate Republican Leader Mike Hewitt told the annual Associated Press
Senate Minority Leader Mike Hewitt (center) with Republican Senators Litzow and Zarelli. Photo: Columbian.com
& BoB KecsKeMety Legislative Preview on Jan. 5 that the legislature’s time would be best occupied with matters other than samesex marriage. "This is not the session for social reforms," Hewitt told reporters. "The last thing we need to do is be down here in turmoil over social issues." Hewitt also took a swipe at fellow Washington state lawmaker Ed Murray, who is gay and a leading supporter of gay marriage legislation. Hewitt accused him of being too close to the issue to be objective, saying that Murray, a Democrat, is "vested in this personally." Murray shot back at the Republican leader: "We’re more than one-issue members," adding, "I’m a little surprised he’s questioning my ability." State Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown, D-Spokane, accused the Republican minority of trying to run down the clock on an issue whose time has come. "This is the right time to move

"To those who say we don’t have the time, what will history say when we say, ’Sorry, we had a budget to pass, so we continued to discriminate.’ That answer does not work," Brown said. "This is our test. This is what leadership is about. Now is our time." Gregoire announced last week that she will introduce legislation that would allow same-sex marriages in Washington state. The announcement represents a change for Gregoire. While
she has supported gay and lesbian partners having the same rights that straight married couples enjoy, she has never specifically endorsed same-sex marriage publicly. Currently, same-sex marriage is legal in six states: Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont and the District of Columbia. Q-Point
Another Victory for Gay Parents and Their Children By NADINE SMITH Floridians still celebrating the end of the anti-gay adoption ban can hail another huge victory for gay parents and their children. On Dec. 23, 2011, Florida's 5th Circuit Court of Appeal ruled that the state of Florida must recognize the parental rights of two lesbian moms, one the biological mother who contributed the egg and the other who was the birth mother. The ruling comes as the result of a bitter custody battle between the couple, who had been together for 11 years. They planned the pregnancy, gave the child their hyphenated last names, and together raised their daughter for over two years. When the relationship ended and the custody negotiations turned sour, the birth mother claimed sole parental rights to the couple's daughter. The appeals court decision overturns an earlier trial court decision. The trial court concluded that the law supported the birth mother, to the exclusion of the biological
mother, and ruled in her favor even though they found her actions "morally reprehensible." In issuing the ruling that deprived the biological mother of her parental rights, the trial court judge said, "It breaks my heart, but this is the law." He concluded by saying, if his decision was appealed, "I hope I'm wrong." Not only did the Fifth Circuit Court reverse the judge's decision by ruling that both women are legal parents to the child, but it also went further and found that the U.S. and Florida constitutions trump Florida law. It found unconstitutional a Florida statute (742.14), which denied the parental rights of an egg or sperm donor, as applied by the trial court, saying, "Interpretation and application of this statute by the trial court to deny Appellant parental rights to her child cannot withstand strict scrutiny and violates Appellant's constitutional rights to equal protection and privacy under the United States and Florida Constitutions."

Oxford-based activist Dennis Hambridge founded the non-governmental organization (NGO) Gay Activists Alliance International with prominent Nigerian activist Davis Mac-Iyalla in order to highlight inequality and human rights abuses towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and other gender variant people (LGBTI). “We also highlight women’s rights regardless of sexuality and also the Worlds AIDS Campaign,” explained Dennis about the all-volunteer organization. “Our activists work from home. We don’t have official offices,” he added, “and our main communications are over the internet, with Messenger or Skype. Due to severe homophobia and trans-phobia in many countries, some activists will use an alias for safety.” Dennis stressed, “No matter in what country or continent, inequality and human rights abuses are no different. We all have the common goal of making it a better and fairer world for the persons we campaign for. How you tackle that from country to
country or continent can significantly vary. What we can do in a free society, you are not able to do in one that is not, or in ones that oppress LGBTIQ persons and women—such as being able to protest or seek funding for LGBTIQ groups in Africa or parts of Asia.” “I identify myself as a gender queer,” clarified Dennis, who did not come out until 2003 after both his mother and stepfather had died. “We are a very close knit family. All my family and relatives have been so supportive. I am not aware of any of them treating LGBTIQ persons any differently than heterosexual people. I don’t think my mum would have approved had they treated LGBTIQ persons differently.” “I believe I really knew about my sexuality when I was about ten years old,” Dennis continued. “Like many in those days, I hid it. I got married young. I was so confused about my sexuality and hid behind alcohol. I became over the years dependent on alcohol to help keep me hiding everything. Eventually I could hide no more and con-

This case is a victory for children, and the most recent in a succession of legal recognitions for gay couples: from the president's order that hospitals treat gay couples precisely as married couples, to the striking down of Florida's 33-year-old anti-gay adoption ban, to the dramatic shift in public opinion in favor of full legal rights for gay families. The majority of Floridians, like the majority of Americans, believe gay couples and their children ought to have full legal protections. In this most recent case the court correctly put the best interest of the child first, one judge stating: In my view it would be wrong to deprive the child of the benefits -- emotional, monetary and supportive -- of the relationship
to which that child should be entitled with both the appellant and the appellee. Both of the adult women in this case are parents to [the child] in the real sense of the term. I think that we need to find a way to redirect our focus in cases of this kind so that best interests becomes part of the decisional matrix. This court decision has wide-ranging implications, as the court's logic in deciding this case should apply to all children with two parents, regardless of a biological connection. H
fessed to my wife.” Dennis learned of the beginnings of the Gay Activists Alliance when he was downloading gay symbols to give out at a pride event. He learned about the Lambda symbol, the ancient Greek Spartan army and the Sacred Bands of Thebes, and studied philosophy. “I then learned of the heroics of such people like Brenda Howard, Marsha P. Johnson, and Sylvia Rae Rivera, among other great names involved with the GAA after the Stonewall riots of 1969.” “I have always strongly believed that there are three main topics that bring people together in harmony,” said Dennis, “Music, sport and the arts. Regardless of gender or sexuality, sports stars and music stars need to come forward to be counted and take a stand for equality and human rights.” “The GAAI needs assistance and funding in getting resources to our campaigners— this can range from educational literature on LGBTIQ issues and on HIV/AIDS, etc,” explained Dennis. “We need to supply laptops for outreach work and find safe areas to use them in. Currently many activists use internet cafes which leave them extremely vulnerable to being caught, beaten or even worse. Those who do have laptops or other access to the internet can pay inordinate prices compared to their living means.” Dennis stressed, “Most LGBTIQ persons in areas like Africa and Asia, once their sex-
uality, or Transgender or Intersex identity, are known, would be near unemployable and/or thrown out of their homes to fend for themselves. We struggle to find the costs of a decent meal and first aid to those we assist who again would properly be out of work, penniless and under threat of violence,” Dennis added. He told me about an experience that changed him. “At a conference in Austria, I stood up in the bar of the hotel and quoted the words of Archbishop Desmond Tutu from an article for the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The African contingent stood, sang, and chanted Tutu’s name while doing their tribal dancing—I felt enormous pride, as they had never heard what Tutu had said.” Dennis paused. “My mother regularly used to say to me,” he continued, “‘No one is above you.’ One day I said back, ‘And no one is beneath me. I am equal to all and all are equal to me.’” For more information about Dennis and his colleagues, visit http://www.gayactivistsalliance.org. H

Advocate.com Rates its 2012 “Gayest Cities in America” Washington State Lawmakers on Opposite Sides of Same-Sex Marriage By RoRy BaRBaRossa The Advocate.com has published its third annual rankings of the gayest places in America. The authors utilized a self-described “subjective criteria,” based in no part on official U.S. Census Bureau data, to arrive at the “per capita queerness” of some of the America’s cities and towns. Fort Lauderdale made the rankings, coming in at “Number 4,” in an equation that included such categories as the number of LGBT elected officials within the community, the density-per-area of LGBT bookstores--and nude yoga classes, whether a locality offers protections to transgendered persons, and the number of International Mr. Leather competition semifinalists who live there, among other criteria, which was then “divided by population within city limits.”
The Advocate.com editors distinguished “Fort Lauderdale” from surrounding communities, specifically citing “Wilton Manors” by name, although the number of gay-centric activities and events would be sparer, indeed, if the Island City and neighbors like Oakland Park are excluded from any accounting. Making the Top Ten were some surprise entries: Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids, Michigan (at “Numbers 6” and “10,” respectively), and Knoxville, Tennessee (“Number 8”), although the authors explain the logic behind their selections, including whether or not a city includes a WNBA franchise. Orlando also made the list, arriving at “Number 2” through a combination of being host city for Gay Days at Disney World on the first Saturday in June,
offering more gay softball teams than any other locality, and the city’s recent domesticpartnership protections ordinance, among other things “queer.” Rounding out the rankings was a perhaps surprising grand prize winner, Salt Lake City, Utah, which finished at “Number 1.” While citing such cultural icons of the Beehive State as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the listings also point out SLC’s over “half-dozen hot spots for men and women, including the ecofriendly nightclub Jam (JamSLC.com),” as well as the internationally-renowned Sundance Film Festival, which offers
many annual LGBT film selections. The authors also note this often-overlooked fact about the city-that-polygamy-built: contrary to popular wives tales about Utah, Mormons, and a state that by law doesn’t permit happy hours, “you can get a drink in this town.” H

2011: THE BIGGEST GAY YEAR IN MOVIES EVER? By WARREN DAY
ou might think 2005 was the best gay year in movies based purely on the release of “Brokeback Mountain.” But in terms of sheer quantity, 2011 has all other years beat, and the quality was damn good too. I’m not talking about the small, independent films that you usually see only in GLBT film festivals, but mainstream movies with one or more recognizable stars, the kind of gay-themed movies that escape the distribution ghetto to which most are assigned, and which your liberal-leaning relatives might see. And in addition, they are showing up on Best-of-the-Year lists. The celluloid closet is finally bursting open. In June, it all began with “Beginners,” where Ewan McGregor plays an uptight straight son who learns how to take risks with his heart from his gay father, who comes out of the closet at age 75 and forms a better relationship with a thirty-something man than anything the son has ever experienced. The unsurpassable Christopher Plummer is the father and he’s currently the front-runner to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and the film itself is appearing on some ten best

lists from straight movie critics (yes, there are some). If “Beginners” portrays the liberating normalcy of coming out of the closet at any age, then Clint Eastwood’s “J. Edgar” shows the soul-crunching consequences of dwelling there your whole life. Leonardo DiCaprio plays J. Edgar Hoover, the founder and longest-serving head of the FBI, while Arnie Hammer plays his never-left-his-side assistant Clyde Tolson. If Mr. Tolson had been as
good-looking as Mr. Hammer (he wasn’t), then it’s doubtful Mr. Hoover could have excised as much self-control as he did. Straight audiences didn’t warm up to this almost tabloid version of a right-wing hero, but gays resonated with this unresolved relationship and
J. Edgar
found meanings in the film that may have escaped others. If “J. Edgar” dealt with one of the biggest bromances in American history, our next film lays out the biggest one in world literature, namely that between Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. In “Game of Shadows,” with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law as the original dynamic duo, the script and the director (Madonna’s ex-husband) make the homoerotic nature of their relationship blatantly obvious. Holmes looks like a heartsick puppy as he watches Watson marry, and then on their honeymoon night Holmes kidnaps Watson, throws the brand new Mrs. Watson into a river, and does all of this while dressed in drag. Subtle it ain’t. In “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” taken from the novel that’s been a world-wide phenomenon, the bi-sexuality of Lisbeth Salander is more subtle than it was in the Swedish film version. The first time Daniel Craig meets Rooney Mara, she’s in bed with a woman, but then she’s portrayed as more heterosexual for the rest of the movie. Directed by David Fincher, who did “The Social Network,” the film is
Benedict Cumberbatch Tiner Tailor Soldier Spy
grittier and has more resonance than the fine Swedish version. Just the opposite happens in “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” where the homosexuality of at least three characters receives more play than it did in the internationally-acclaimed TV miniseries. Rightly one of the best films of the year, and one of the best thinkingperson’s spy thrillers ever made, Gary Oldman achieves a career high, with excellent support from Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch and John Hurt. Like “Beginners,” the homosexuality or bisexuality of those three characters is treated with the same nonchalance as if they’d been straight, and that’s definitely a sign of cinema progress. For a good deal of this film, you may feel you don’t know what’s going on, but the director is merely letting you know how real espionage feels, where the whole nature of the enterprise is deception and confusion. The British film “Weekend” escaped the attention black hole that most inde-
Tom Cullen and Chris New The Weekend
pendent gay films find themselves in, and is appearing on some best of the year lists. Telling the story of how a relationship-inclined gay man and a very much non-relationship type gay man meet on a Friday and developed a strong bond over the weekend. On some level, this is a rather run-of-the-mill story for gay films, so it was interesting that it received so many positive reviews from straight critics. “Pariah,” which is still opening in theaters, is in some ways the gay version of last year’s “Precious,” as it traces the struggle of a Brooklyn 17-year-old African-American girl to come to terms with her sexuality and deal with her strait-lace mother. Played by Adepero Oduye in a heartbreaking performance, she finds herself attracted to a girl even more closeted than she is. The film succeeds in telling a particular story in a universal way, thus enabling whites and blacks, straights and gays, men and women to mutually find relevance and truth in its characters. What is really amazing about these gay-themed movies is that to some degree they’re all worth seeing, and in what other year could you say that about seven movies with gay content? And now we come to what may be the campiest moment in any film released in 2011, but it happened in one far different from any of those discussed here. I’m talking about Tom Cruise’s latest outing in the fourth “Mission Impossible” movie, but the scene didn’t involve him, but rather his comrade-inarms Jeremy Renner (“The Hurt Locker,” “The Town”). The sole woman in the IMF team has been sent to entice a code from a multi-millionaire industrialist, while Jeremy is plunged down a shaft and suspended by magnetic force (I defy anyone to suspend belief enough to swallow that). And when Renner barely makes it back up the shaft exhausted and bruised, he exclaims, “The next time, I get to seduce the rich guy.” Now the question is, was this in the script or was it an ad lib? May the year 2012 further develop these delightful, diverse, and ever-deepening trends.

Utah Unleashed Part II: Monument Valley and the Byways Beyond By PaUL RUBIo
Near the Utah-Arizona state border, Monument Valley (navajonationparks.org) has long served as Hollywood’s quintessential Western back lot, beginning with John Ford’s Stagecoach in 1939 and continuing to more modern blockbuster films such as Mission Impossible II and Back to the Future III. This vast expanse of unique sandstone formations and historic home to the Navajo Indian Nation rises dramatically from the ground, far and away from any major town or airport in a place void of most links to modernity. Connecting this time warp to a lucrative tourist industry, the Gouldings Lodge (gouldings.com) offers dining, overnight accommodations, day tours and activities to dutifully experience Monument Valley. Goulding’s safari-style tour trucks navigate the bumpy, roller coaster trails through the Valley with the help of an experienced Navajo driver and guide. The open-aired truck makes stops at superlative locations to photograph the most famous rock formations like the Three Sisters, the Eye of the Sun, Submarine Rock, and the Mittens. Inside the Valley, descendants of domestic sheep and horses from the conquistadors’ days roam freely. Those hoping to explore the valley on their own should think twice. Most rental vehicles struggle to handle the terrain, and the majority of the Valley is restricted to use by official tour and park
vehicles. Through Gouldings, it’s possible to arrange Monument Valley activities in advance, like the tour described above, horseback group rides, and also ATV or hiking excursions to other near sites outside of the Monument Valley Preserve. While Monument Valley consummates a childhood fantasy of playing “Cowboys and Indians,” getting to this clandestine destination is half the adventure. When planning a Utah tour de force, the most logical and spectacular way to reach here is via Bicentennial Scenic Byway 95, coming from Hanksville, 45 minutes east of Capitol Reef National Park. Pictures, pit stops, deep thoughts and all, this drive could easily take all day. Indeed, it’s likely that you will hope this road trip will never end. Carved through the pinnacle of southeastern Utah’s Canyon country, the Bicentennial Scenic Byway showcases the diversity of the state’s landscapes. The byway passes through Bridges National Monument, the world’s largest display of natural bridges clocking in at 225 million years old, as well as the aquamarine oasis of Lake Powell. Veering south at Highway 261, the valleys of Southern Utah paint a jaw-dropping panorama as you descend the Moki Dugway, an 11 percent grade, gravel zigzagged road lowering 1000 feet to the valley floor. It is here on Moki Dugway that the greatness of the Monument Valley first comes into view.
But the sights don’t end yet unless your early end game is the town of Bluff at the Desert Rose Inn (desertroseinn.com) for a comfortable respite from the day’s driving and sightseeing. Whether overnighting in Bluff or heading all the way to Gouldings in the same day, take a short detour west before reaching the town of Mexican Hat (appropriately named for the rock formation that forms a figure resembling the profile of a Mexican sombrero on the head of a serape-covered person) and you’ll soon arrive at Goosenecks State Park (utah.com/stateparks). Over 300+ million years old, the San Juan River has carved out a stunning display of a rare labyrinthine geologic formation known as “entrenched meander.” As you exit your vehicle and grow mesmerized by these natural “goose necks,” not having seen more than a dozen vehicles in the entire day, enjoying nothing but the sounds of wind and rock in a land void of radio and cell phone coverage, the epiphany hits. Utah’s sandstonestrewn canyon lands have become the pages of your personal Choose Your Own Adventure Book, each detour or turn another page number, leading you to our bespoke conclusion. The Earth seems limitless and inviting and somehow all yours.

DINING
FLORIDAAGENDA.COM
A LEISURELY LUNCH YOU WON’T FORGET At J-Mark’s
J-Mark’s 1245 N Federal Hwy Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304 (954) 390-0770
By tIM sLIVINsKI It is nearly a rhetorical question: Have you been to J Mark’s yet? After all, on any typical evening, it seems that you run into several of your friends and acquaintances when you walk in. And that, of course, is a testament to the appeal of this popular dining spot. It is a place that makes every guest feel comfortable and important—from the minute they enter. There are always smiles at the hostess stand, and Rebecca, with her infectious smile and graceful charm, is sure to stop by your table for a chat at some point. The bar is always humming with conversation and peals of laughter, and very soon, one of the best dining patios in Fort Lauderdale will be crowded once again. Liking the hubbub and friendliness of the bar, my partner and I often opt for a seat there. J Mark’s is one of those places where the appetizers can easily constitute a meal, so after ordering a drink, we peruse our options. Though sliders have become a bit ubiquitous, I am a huge fan of the A-hi Tuna Sliders. At $13.99, they are a great deal and superbly delicious. Perfectly seared tuna with a zingy Cajun crust arrives on freshly made mini-buns. Avocado, red onion, crispy wontons and a remoulade all combine with the tuna to make a wonderful explosion of flavor in the mouth. Turn up the heat by adding a bit of
wasabi and soy ginger. These sliders never fail to please. My partner prefers the Prime Rib Sliders ($12.99), though claiming not to be a prime rib fan. He loves the texture and perfectly cooked temperature of the prime rib and how it is layered on the mini-bun. They arrive with basil pesto and creamy horseradish, which kicks up the heat a bit. Dip them in warm au jus, and don’t worry if it dribbles down your chin. Sliders are plated with a small batch of fries, so it is easy to make them an entrée. When my appetite is a bit more on the hearty side, I tend to opt for J Mark’s Rib-eye ($24.99). It is an ample portion of steak, and it consistently arrives at my requested temperature. The menu serves it with Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes, which are terrific and enough to feed four, but I often ask for a baked potato instead, highlighting another fact that makes J Mark’s so popular: They gladly and willingly make substitutions. There is never a quibble. The boyfriend leans toward the pasta portion of the menu. He is particularly fond of the Veggie Lovers Pasta ($11.99). It offers an array of
vegetables: broccoli, sun-dried tomatoes, roasted eggplant, peppers, and kalamata olives. Tossed in an olive oil and walnut basil pesto with penne, it has become a “go to” dish for him. Half of the overly generous serving almost always goes home for the next day’s lunch. One of the newer offerings at J Mark’s is Saturday and Sunday brunch, featured from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Spicy bloody Marys or mimosas at $3.00 each get your late morning started in just the right way. Brunch offerings are listed on a separate menu and tempt with some unusual preparations. On a recent slightly less humid and cooler Sunday, our gracious and exceedingly competent waiter, Ralph, kept us well liquefied in brunch cocktails and coffee. I have fallen in love with the Filet and Eggs ($12.99). Certified Angus Beef Tips are grilled to your desired temperature, and the dish arrives with beautifully poached eggs, homemade Hollandaise sauce, and breakfast potatoes, which are crispy, but not too much so. It is a hearty way to get my day going after a
late Saturday. (Dining hint: I love to dip my breakfast potatoes in the Hollandaise. Yummy!) For something completely unusual, try one of my partner’s favorites: the Cheese-burger Bennie ($13.99). Two superbly grilled patties, again done to your desired temperature, with cheddar cheese placed atop toasted English muffins. They are then finished with poached eggs and Hollandaise sauce. It sounds messy, and it is, but it is oh so good! I would never have believed it if I had not tried it. Other brunch choices include an egg white omelette ($9.99), an egg croissant sandwich ($9.99), breakfast egg rolls ($9.99), and several more variations on the traditional eggs benedict ($11.99-$15.99). A comfortable bar and dining area, many menu options and price points, attentive and well-trained servers, great cocktails – it is all a part of the winning formula that keeps customers coming back to J Mark’s. Whether you want to enjoy a drink and an appetizer or a full-on meal, you will be graciously cared for. J Mark’s does it and does it well.

RECIPE
JANUARY 12, 2012
H 23
THIS WEEK’S TASTY RECIPE: Artichauts à la Barigoule By JeaN DoheRty Artichauts à la Barigoule or Artichoke Hearts Stewed in Olive Oil is a typical Provençal dish and this recipe comes from Vero’s Aunt Lilian, who would buy her veggies from the local market in “Bormes-les-Mimosas,” the most beautiful small Provençal village in the south of France. Drink an ice cold dry Rosé wine with this dish…yum. 1⁄2 lemon, zested and juiced, plus 4 thin slices 4 medium sized artichokes 1⁄2 cup extra-virgin olive oil 10 button mushrooms 6 cloves of garlic, smashed 2 small carrots, cut into 3" pieces 1⁄2 a cup of white wine 1 tbsp. butter 1 cup smokey lardons 1⁄4 tsp. cracked coriander seeds Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 6 olives, pitted and halved 1⁄4 cup flat-leaf parsley leaves 1⁄8 tsp. paprika or piment d'Espelette
Combine lemon juice and 6 cups water in a large bowl. Working with one artichoke at a time, use a serrated knife, and cut off leaves by making a crosswise cut about 1 1⁄2" from where the stem meets the base; discard leaves. Cut away the tough outer leaves remaining on the base until you reach the inner yellow leaves. Using a peeler, remove green outer layer from the stem and base. Trim off bottom 1⁄2" of
stem. Use a spoon to scoop out fuzzy choke from center of artichoke. Halve the trimmed artichoke and transfer to the lemon water. Your trimmed artichoke should look like a lollypop. Split the “lollypop” in half length ways . Drain artichokes. Heat oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Add artichokes cut side down, along with mushrooms, garlic, lardons and carrots. Cook, stirring, until brown, 8 to 10 minutes. Add lemon slices, wine, butter, and coriander and bring to the boil. Reduce wine by half, 3–4 minutes. Add enough water to just cover vegetables, again bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low; simmer until vegetables are tender, 12 to15 minutes. Season with salt and pepper and taste. Using tongs, transfer artichokes, carrots, and mushrooms to a bowl. Bring the liquid to a boil and reduce 8 to 10 minutes, and then return everything to the pan and heat through. Garnish with lemon zest, parsley, and paprika. You are a chef!
