Chris Chestnut, the attorney for the family of Champion, a drum major with the school’s famous Marching 100 band, told reporters on Jan. 10: "We do anticipate, in the very near future, filing a legal action against the bus company alleging negligence and wrongful death." Pam Champion says her son "wasn't defined by his sexual orientation. He was just defined as being a child going to school, trying to get an education.” Champion collapsed on the
bus in Orlando following a November football game that included a halftime performance by the Marching 100, which is considered one of the best marching bands in the nation. The band performed at the 2009 inauguration of President Barack Obama. Chestnut said that the lawsuit will permit him to subpoena witnesses in an effort to determine who was driving the bus, whether the driver was on the bus at the time of Champion’s fatal beating, and the reasons behind the attack, which is believed to have taken place in front of an estimated 30 witnesses. As of yet, no criminal charges have been filed. Same-Sex Couple “Not Actually Married” In Canada Because of Laws in Florida/UK: International Ex’s Can’t Divorce after Toronto Wedding By PHOEBE MOSES WINDSOR, ONTARIO - Canadian courts are debating the legal niceties of the nation’s marriage laws as a divorce case involving a Florida woman and her partner from England, who were married in 2005 in Toronto, threatens the very legal basis for Canada’s samesex marriage statutes. The women sought a Canadian marriage because same-sex unions weren’t legal in either of their countries of origin. Now seeking a divorce, the case threatens to upend the lives of more than 5,000 LGBT people who moved to Canada because of the freedom to marry.
At the heart of the controversy is the couple’s application for divorce, which the government says cannot be granted because the couple wasn’t married to

An attorney with Canada’s Department of Justice, Sean Gaudet, said in a documented response to their application: "Neither party had the legal capacity to marry a person of the same sex under the laws of their respective domicile - Florida and the United Kingdom. As a result, their marriage is not legally valid under Canadian law." In addition to his argument that since the women are not legally married in Florida or England, their marriage is not valid in Canada, either, Gaudet added that under the nation’s federal marriage ‘CANADIAN DIVORCE’ continues on Page 7

White House Issues Two LGBT- Anti-Trans Activist Girl Scout Related Updates: Spearheads Boycott: HIV Funds Targeted at State and Local Level
No Cookies For You!
By RoRy BARBARossA WASHINGTON, D.C. – The White House issued a document last week entitled “Two Important Developments that Impact the Health and Well-Being of LGBT People.” The document outlined a revision to the FBI’s definition of rape in order to encourage more comprehensive reporting of rape crimes nationwide, including male victims. It also detailed a major grant by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for highimpact HIV prevention.
Attorney General Eric Holder announced revisions to the Uniform Crime Report’s definition of rape last week. The revised definition includes rapes committed against men, and encompasses a broader range of sexual acts understood to be rape. This revised definition will be used to collect data from local law enforcement about these crimes and will be published in the Uniform Crime Report. The CDC announced that it has begun awarding almost $339 million to state and local health departments across the United States to fund HIV prevention activities this year. The awards are a component of CDC’s new approach to HIV prevention, designed to better align resources to reflect the geographic burden of the HIV epidemic, and achieve a higher level of impact with every federal HIV prevention dollar spent. South Florida Gets Serious About Human Trafficking
By BoB KEcsKEmETy
VENTURA COUNTY, CA – A 14-yearold Girl Scout has reportedly joined with parents and Scout alumni to call for a boycott of the widely-popular Girl Scout cookies, claiming the organization is using cookie proceeds to push a radical homosexual agenda at the expense of the Scouts’ safety. The girl, identified as “Taylor from Ventura County, California,” but whose parents have asked her last name and troop number be withheld, made a YouTube video calling for the boycott after she learned that Girl Scouts U.S.A.
has been admitting boys who claim to be transgender girls into scout troops. “Transgender Girl Scouts = Boys Who Wish They Were Girls,” the video touts in bold faced type. The video was released by a Houston-based group made up of Girl Scout volunteers called the “Honest Girl Scouts.” Sometime after the Washington Post reposted Taylor’s video on their website, Taylor made her YouTube account “private”. A spokesperson for the Girl Scouts released a statement saying that the Scouts accept all girls in kindergarten through 12th grade as members. “If a child identifies as a girl and the child’s family presents her as a girl, she is welcomed as a Girl Scout,” the statement read. Spokeswoman Michelle Tompkins reaffirmed that the proceeds from Girl Scout Cookies, as always, ““stay in the local market and are used to fund programs for girls,” in an email to the Washington Post. Organizations Take Aim at Perpetrators By JARRETT TERRILL The Broward Human Trafficking Coalition (BHTC) hosted a film viewing at The African American Research Library last Monday. The documentary film, “Not My Life” was previewed as part of Human Trafficking Awareness Week. Adriane Reesey, the President of BHTC facilitated a panel discussion during the film’s intermission which included an impressive array of Justice Department representatives, federal law
enforcement agents, victims’ advocates and social workers. The experts on the panel took turns fielding questions from the audience. “Not My Life” is a heart-wrenching exposé from CNN about the global sex exploitation industry. This was not the first film showing and panel discussion that the BHTC has conducted but their events are drawing more attention from the community lately. The horrors of human trafficking have also made a few blips on the radars of some prominent lawmakers in Florida like Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Schultz has long been a consistent advocate for children’s safety in Congress but has recently amplified her concern in a very direct way – by
addressing the actual perpetrators of crimes against children in a YouTube video. Schultz, along with other Florida legislators and officials like Congresswoman Frederica Wilson and James Loftus of Miami-Dade Police, appear in the “Dear John Campaign” videos. The campaign, which was created by the Children’s Trust and the Women’s Fund of Miami-Dade, is focused on the perpetrators of sex trafficking rather than just the young people who are frequently being exploited against their will or intention. In the United States, victims of sex trafficking are often jailed on prostitution charges while those who ‘Human Trafficking’ Continues in NEWS on Page 3

Homophobic Rant to Become “30 Rock” Episode HOLLYWOOD, CA – Comedian Tracy Morgan’s homophobic rant will become a plotline in an upcoming episode of the NBC comedy “30 Rock.” Morgan caused backlash from LGBT rights groups after he made derogatory, homophobic statements during a standup routine in Nashville last summer. Morgan later issued an apology and the controversy blew over. Many of the plot lines of “30 Rock” episodes mirror events from the producers’ and actors’ real lives. In the plot, Tina Faye’s character writes Morgan’s apology for their fictional show, in which Morgan says that he’s not a homophobe, just an idiot. The apology causes NBC to be picketed by both LGBT rights groups and idiots. MSNBC’s openly gay news anchor Thomas Roberts will also make a cameo appearance. H

Pat Buchanan Blames Gays for MSNBC “Firing” WASHINGTON, D.C. – MSNBC conservative commentator Pat Buchanan attacked gay rights and civil rights organizations for pressuring network president Phil Griffin to fire him after the release of his latest book, “Suicide of a Superpower.” The work, which has been condemned by human rights groups, includes chapters entitled “The End of White America” and “The Death of Christian America.” During an interview with conservative host Sean Hannity, Buchanan said that gay rights groups may call themselves civil rights organizations, but they are not all that interested in civil rights. He added that LGBT rights groups have been “after” him for years. Buchanan said that while he has not received “formal notification” of termination from MSNBC, executives have hinted to him that he will not be returning to the broadcast airwaves. H
NJ Teacher Pink Slipped for Anti-Gay Rant on Facebook CHICAGO, IL – On her new television network, talk show host Oprah Winfrey gave a platform to Pastor Joel Osteen to express his views on homosexuality. The faith leader appeared on “Oprah’s Next Chapter,” where he voiced his opinion on homosexuality and heaven. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Osteen when asked whether gay individuals would be accepted into heaven, he replied, “I believe they will, because I believe that you have to have forgiveness for your sins. But, sometimes we look at gay being a bigger sin than being proud or not telling the truth. I don’t think God categorizes sins.” Oprah pressed to clarify whether Osteen did, in fact, view being gay as a sin. “I believe that homosexuality is shown as a sin in the scripture. I do,” Osteen replied. “It’s a hard thing in a sense, Oprah, because I’m for everybody. I’m not against anybody. I don’t think anybody’s second class.” H

‘CHAMPION’S CAUSE’ Continued from COVER system, was believed to have been left running during Champion’s beating. It has been alleged that the bus driver was not on the bus at the time of the attack. Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, more commonly known as Florida A&M or FAMU, is the nation's largest historically black university by enrollment. The school is protected under sovereign immunity, which means that under most circumstances, it is immune from civil suit. Champion’s parents, Robert and Pam Champion, are required by law to file a notice of intent to sue, and must then wait six months to file suit against the university. "I'm waiting on a solution," Pam Champion told CBS News last week. "Our goal is not to shut down any school. Our goal is not to stop the music. Our goal is to stop the hazing." Some Marching 100 members have said that Champion died after he took part in a hazing ritual called "crossing Bus C." CNN reported last week that one band member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told reporters that the ritual required students to "walk from the front of the bus to the back of the bus backward while the bus is full of other band members, and you
get beaten until you get to the back." The Orange County Medical Examiner's ruled Champion’s death a homicide, and said that the student "collapsed and died within an hour of a hazing incident during which he suffered multiple blunt trauma blows to his body." An autopsy found "extensive contusions of his chest, arms, shoulder and back," along with "evidence of crushing of areas of subcutaneous fat," the fatty tissue directly below skin. Champion’s mother says her son "wasn't defined by his sexual orientation. He was just defined as being a child going to school, trying to get an education." Attorney Chestnut says that the fact that Champion was gay may not have been a primary factor in the hazing death. "This is not a hate crime. This is a hazing crime," he told reporters. "Florida A&M University has a 50-year history, a culture in this band, of hazing." Pam Champion told reporters last week that her son "loved his music. He loved the band. He was very serious about how he did and the position he was in." "Robert Champion was defined by the fact that he followed the rules," and was a vocal critic of hazing practices at FAMU, Chestnut said. H
‘CANADIAN DIVORCE’ Continued from COVER laws, a married couple must reside in Canada for at least one year in order to qualify for a divorce. During the past six years, thousands of couples from the U.S. and other countries have emigrated to Canada because of the nation’s marriage equality laws. That began with the 2004 court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage in Canada on the grounds that it was discriminatory to deny same-sex couples the right to marry. Canadian lawmakers passed legislation recognition its legality the following year. In 2006, Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservative Party attempted to roll back same-sex marriage through a parliamentary measure to "restore the traditional definition of marriage," but it was defeated by lawmakers. On Jan. 12, Harper said that his administration will not revisit same-sex marriage. "We have no intention of further reopening this issue," the 51-year-old prime minister said. Canadian Justice Minister Rob Nicholson echoed Harper’s words, saying, "I want to be very clear that the government has no intention of

reopening the debate on the definition of marriage." In a possible effort to sound a conciliatory note, Nicholson added that he will consider "options to clarify the law so that such marriages performed in Canada can be undone in Canada." When the Superior Court decides the case next month, it has several options, including denying an application to waive the residency requirement for divorce, which would leave the women unable to remarry, or the Department of Justice's argument could spell the end of Canadian weddings for foreign gay couples unable to legally marry in their home countries. “Avatar” as Metaphor My boyfriend and I just got around to watching James Cameron’s film, “Avatar,” last night. (Yes, I am a couple of years behind – I understand he’s also done something else that featured the Wreck of the Hesperus, or was it the Andrea Doria?). In the middle of the movie, which we both enjoyed, incidentally, he turned to me and asked, “Are we watching ‘Pocahontas’?” He might just as easily have said “Fern Gully,” or “Dances with Wolves,” “The Last Samurai,” “Dune,” or—and this reaches way back—“A Man Called Horse.” Each of these films invokes the archetype of “The White Savior,” a myth which often involves a strapping young (white) thrillseeker who goes off into the back-country seeking profit/fun/a rush/etc., but upon encountering the local primitives, decides to adopt their noble culture and ways as superior to his own. Acclaimed now as the natives’ “Savior,” he proceeds to go all Jihad and leads the primitives against the corrupt members of his own former society. The beauty of this Hollywood formula is that everybody—my boyfriend among them—knows pretty much what’s going to happen once things get rolling, so you don’t have to over think story, plot, or the like. I’m not in any way denigrating these films (did I mention I liked all of them, excepting “Fern Gully,” which I never saw), but rather, am illustrating the potency of metaphor. Here’s another example: I once heard an argument that the actual “sin” being described in the Biblical injunction against homosexuality (“If a man also lie with mankind, as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination…,” Leviticus, 20:13) was more or less the same injunction against
Dear Editor: Regarding your report covering Broward County’s hate crimes numbers for the last reported year (“Broward County Sheriff on Hate Crimes: ‘We Don’t Want to Be Number One’”), during the Matthew Shepard trial, Chastity Pasley and Kristen Price (the respective girlfriends of killers Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson at the time of the event) testified that Henderson and McKinney both plotted beforehand to rob a gay man. That's what sealed the fates of those murderers even before any hate crime legislation had been enacted. Hate crimes legislation is intended to bring awareness to people and declare that the United States does not tolerate socially-targeted hateful acts. It proves the point that some crimes are perpetrated out of hatred for any given social class and that we, as a society of civilized people find these crimes to be particularly offensive. Unfortunately, some people don't completely get it. They believe that the point of hate crimes legislation and reporting is to

own bedroom, not to mention the kitchen, the study, and the original one in the living room, which was contributing to the alienation of family members from one another. This same argument has also been applied to telephones and, later, to home computers. Fast forward to the second decade of the 21st century, and I can count on both hands and feet the number of times this week I have seen someone using their cell phone “Grindr” app, or the tell-tale brrring of an Adam4Adam message on someone’s laptop. Technology is a wonderful thing, and can improve and enrich each of our lives in so many ways that I’m almost embarrassed to have to say it. But there’s a darker, seedier side issue that "extra punishment" for the perpetrators. Obviously, prosecuting attorneys have come to see the classification as a tricky bonus round in the game we call justice. The Broward Sheriff's Office seems to ascribe to that latter definition. I'm sure this belief is popular in Tallahassee as well. It would be quite convenient for Florida's Republican legislature and the taser-happy cops of North Florida to think of hate crimes reporting as something that's sort of pointless and excessive. I don't mean to imply that BSO doesn’t take hate crimes seriously and is concerned. But at the same time, there is evidence that BSO still might need some improvement in this department when compared to their peers. In a report issued by the Florida Attorney General's office in 2008, only 4 hate crimes were officially reported by the Broward Sheriff's Office. However, 25 hate crimes were reported by city police within Broward County. These numbers may be getting better—maybe—but there is still room for improvement.

of her family in a more meaningful way, reducing each other to a set of stats on a cell phone’s read-out, or basing our social interactions with other gay men and women on their sexual desirability turns interpersonal relationships into little more than “fetishes,” and furthers the dehumanization of us all. I don’t know if there exists a “Savior” for that. H

DEPT. OF CORRECTIONS Correction: In a story in the Jan. 5, 2012 issue (“Two More Say ‘I Do”), the Agenda incorrectly reported that California does not recognize same-sex marriages. The article noted that a federal court decision overturning California’s ban on same-sex marriage was stayed pending appeal, but should have reported that the ruling has been upheld. We regret the error. Correction: In a story in the Jan. 12, 2012 issue (“Broward County Sheriff on Hate Crimes: ‘We Don’t Want to Be Number One’”), we inadvertently failed to report that hate crimes numbers in Broward County in jurisdictions policed by the Broward Sheriff’s Office dropped by half in 2010, the last year for which reporting numbers are available. We regret the omission.

Tel Aviv Named World’s Best Gay City TEL AVIV, ISRAEL – Tel Aviv has been named the Best Gay City of 2011 in an international American Airlines competition to select the most popular destinations among LGBT tourists. Tel Aviv received 43 percent of the votes; New York City came in a distant second with 14 percent. The top 10 cities also included Toronto, Sao Paulo, Madrid, London, New Orleans and Mexico City. The voting was held last month on AA’s website.
According to the London Times-Mirror, Green said: “I went to the ‘Britain’s Next Top Model’ show in London and was really surprised when scouts came up to me. Miss England is a prestigious competition. I’d love to win. I’ve as good a chance as anyone.” Green, from Leeds, England, became the UK’s youngest transsexual after an operation in Thailand on her 16th birthday. Green says that she wanted to switch gender from the age of four. By ten she had long hair and wore a girl’s uniform to school. Her mother took her to a U.S. clinic for hormone treatment to halt her male puberty. Bullying led Green to attempt suicide five times. She says she can never thank her mother enough for saving her life. H

ANKARA, TURKEY – Turkey’s High Court of Appeals has ordered the Turkish daily paper Yeni Akit to pay compensation for insulting LGBT people in a headline it printed in 2008, according to a report published by the newspaper Hürriyet. Yeni Akit was fined after it printed an article entitled “Üskül Prefers Perverts,” which concerned Zafer Üskül, the former head of the Turkish Parliamentary Human Rights Commission. The article ran after Üskül attended an International AntiHomophobia Meeting organized by Turkey’s LGBT community. H
WASHINGTON, D.C. – A gay teen from California has committed suicide just a month after he made an anti-suicide video urging others to "never give up." Eric James Borges made the video in December for the "It Gets Better" campaign, which features inspiring videos targeting LGBT teens to help them get through difficult times. In the video, Borges, 19, describes his own personal experiences as a gay youth, discussing the bullying he was subjected to from kindergarten through high school. “I know it is hard and I know what it feels like to be rejected and abused for your biological sexual orientation," he offered. "I was physically, mentally, emotionally and verbally assaulted on a day-today basis for my perceived sexual orientation," Borges added. "I was stalked, spit on, ostracized and physically assaulted." He also described an assault upon himself by students during high school while a teacher was present. This motivated Borges to leave formal school and finish his high school equivalency. Borges was also open about his coming out experiences at home, describing it as an "extremist Christian household."
"My mother knew I was gay and performed an exorcism on me in an attempt to cure me," Borges said on the video. "My anxiety, depression, self-loathing and suicidal thoughts spiked. I had nowhere safe to go, either at home or school." He was forced by his parents to leave home at the end of September. Things seemed to have changed for the teen after he began working for the Trevor project to help bullied gay teens. “I have met and befriended the most incredible and authentic people since I've come out,” Borges noted. He then offered assurances that reiterated the theme of the anti-suicide campaign: "You will love and be loved and I love you. You have an entire life, fit to burst with opportunities ahead of you. Don't ever give up and don't ever for one second think that you're not a valuable and beautiful contribution to this world. It gets better." Distraught friends say that Borges gave no indication in recent days that he was planning to end his own life. "He seemed like the normal old Eric the last time I saw him,” friend James Criss told ABC News. “He was fine. I couldn't tell anything was wrong with him," Criss added. H

Q-Point
Tonight I Missed Him This Week’s Q-Point from “Cross-Eyed” by AJ CROSS Tonight I missed him. Not a particular “him,” but the presence of a him. It doesn’t happen very often as I am very good at occupying as many of the hours in a day as possible. Tonight, I watched a couple at a diner hold hands, secretly underneath the table, and later saw another couple looking at one another the way only two people in love do, and I missed that feeling. The feeling of someone saying, “I’m yours,” or waking up in the middle of night and having a warm body next to me. Knowing that the only sound in the house will be the voice in my head, instead of his voice saying something that will make me laugh, is not pleasing. I miss the feeling of a hand on the small of my back leading me into a room, or having the smallest detail of something about me remembered, like telling
the waiter that I want extra dressing on my salad. I never took for granted the special aspects of being with someone, but I know that many people do. To those people, I say “don’t.” Don’t undervalue the fact that someone has chosen to be with you and share his or her life with you. Don’t take lightly that someone has chosen your lips above all others to kiss every day. Don’t wait until they are gone to tell them that they are missed. Don’t assume that finding what you already have is easy to find. If you think that the person you are with is not perfect, then you are probably right. But then again, neither are you, and they have chosen to be with you despite your imperfections. So often the attributes that sparked our initial interest in someone become the very things that we seek to change,
because we do not want them to be attractive to anyone else. This is selfish and wrong. Why would you want them to be less than who they are? Why shouldn’t they be witty, outgoing, and fashionable? This is what made you want them in the first place, right? Remember that they made a conscious decision that you were they person they wanted to be with, and that is what matters. The people we love should be loved with great dignity, respect, and freedom. A caged animal is not a happy animal. It does not stay because it wants to, but because it has no choice. Choice is the key to everything. When something is an option, it is very easy to opt out. I would rather be writing a letter about a person who is here than a column about the person who is not. I am happy about the moment tonight when I missed “him,” because it will make meeting him again all the more special. Now go and kiss “him.” H AJ Cross is a contributing writer and author of his column “CrossEyed”. He can be reached at AJCrossConsulting@gmail.com.

Utah Unleashed Part III: Moab and Salt Lake City By PAUL RUBIo
Anchored by protected lands that are teeming with extraordinary natural arches and seemingly-otherworldly dimensions of tiered red rock landscapes, Moab (discovermoab.com) has evolved as the gateway to one of Utah’s most impressive and popular parks, the 73,000-acre Arches National Park (nps.gov/arch). Unlike Capitol Reef and Monument Valley, Arches’ accessibility from Salt Lake City and its thriving airport means unleashing your Utah with a helluva lot of other visitors and tourists, who have also traveled from far and wide to witness the 2,000-plus natural sandstone arches, particularly the world-famous Delicate Arch. From the Visitor’s Center, the heavily trafficked road climbs at a steep grade to the park entrance, ascending through twists and turns to various sightseeing points and hiking trails. These stops are wonderfully mapped out on the National Park’s pamphlet, but those who were savvy as kids in defining cloud shapes will quickly recognize points like “Park Avenue,” a large rock formation that resembles a long block of city skyscrapers. With such an abundance of arches and sights, you have to pick and choose which you’d like to see. What’s not to miss? First, the Devils Garden Trailhead to Landscape Arch is a three-for-one, also passing through Pine Tree Arch and Tunnel Arch. Fiery Furnace provides a terrific view of jagged and rough rock that resembles volcanic lava. And of course the three-mile trail to Delicate Arch is easily the highlight of any trip to Utah. Strutting its beauty over a steep precipice, framing the best of Utah’s landscapes within its perimeter, Delicate Arch has rightfully become the icon of Utah, and a beacon for travel to this scintillating red rock country.
Moab In close proximity to Arches National Park, Moab is Utah’s equivalent to Jackson Hole, Wyoming – an upscale but homey town with plenty of places to stay, from the high-end to the mediocre, a variety of choices of food establishments, and booking facilities for all outdoor activities whether in summer or winter. One of the superlative lodge experiences is to be found at Sorrel River Ranch (sorrelriver.com), north and east of Moab along Highway 128, running contiguously to the Colorado River. Sorrel is a top-notch luxury resort that provides the full throttle “glamping” experience, with swimming pools, rustic-meets-modernluxe cabins, and haute amenities, nestled among picturesque canyon walls along the path of the Colorado River. The Sorrel River Ranch offers horseback riding from its own stables in addition to providing bookings for river rafting, Hummer drive/rides, ATV rental, fishing, hiking, and other outdoor activities. Salt Lake City No matter what the middle chapters of your “Choose Your Own Adventure/ Utah” look like, your story will nearly always begin and end in the state’s capital, Salt Lake City. Fear not, SLC is not nearly as scary in person as it seems on TV. In fact, the city surprises with its pockets of big-city sophistication, including the Sugar House gayborhood, with lots of fab real estate, a 24-hour fitness center that comes equipped with plenty of eye candy, and LGBT-friendly restaurants and shops like Diva’s Cupcakes & Coffee, and the 50-year old Finn’s Café. While residential Sugar House merits a visit for getting your food and drink on, the city’s best accommoda-
tions are to be found downtown. Kimpton’s Hotel Monaco Salt Lake City (monaco-saltlakecity.com) is hands-down the best place to start and end your Utah sojourn. Ironically located just blocks away from Temple Square and the spires of the LDS Temple and Mormon Tabernacle (the home of its world-renown Choir), the Hotel Monaco SLC embraces the LGBT community with open arms: It hosts the annual LGBT “Red Party” fundraiser, a benefit for the Utah AIDS Foundation (utahaids.org), which turns into the dance party of the year on the Thursday before World AIDS Day. In summer, the Monaco also hosts the annual “Pink Party” to kick off Salt Lake City’s gay pride, which rounded up 35,000 supporters in 2011. And in any season, the hotel celebrates eccentricity and individuality through its gregarious staff and patrons, whimsical and funky guest rooms, and its see-andbe-seen restaurant, Bambara. An über-cool adaptive reuse of the former First Continental Bank, the Hotel Monaco SLC has retained some of the bank’s original elements including the vault, and the circa-early 20th
century gold elevators, while completely re-inventing the interiors. In keeping with the freebie heavy traditions of the Kimpton brand, complimentary WiFi, coffee, and nightly wine hours are an added bonus. Almost every restaurant and coffee house near the hotel distributes Q Salt Lake, the city’s gay rag. If you want to know what’s up in SLC before heading west, check out their website qsaltlake.com. Most gay nightlife options like Jam, Pure, and Metro will require a 10-15 minute taxi, but it’s well worth it. Finally, in the spirit of open-mindedness and learning about other cultures, take the time to stroll down a few blocks from the hotel to visit Temple Square, the headquarters of the LDS (Mormon) Church. Here, you’ll be approached by young women on mission, eager to show you around the square and tell you about life in the church and the doctrine of continuing revelation. You’ll be staring at larger-than-life photos of the church’s current president, Thomas S. Monson, whom they consider to be a modern-day “prophet, seer, and revelator,” as you listen to “recordings” of Jesus Christ. Honestly, it’s fascinating. They might even try to convert you, as they did me. When the girls asked me to join the LDS church, I told them, “Sorry girls, I can’t join. I am gay.” To this they replied: “That’s ok. We can get you help. And it’s okay to be gay. You just can’t practice it.” Luckily for me, I’ve had plenty of practice, much of it in Utah, unleashed. H

RECIPE
FLORIDAAGENDA.COM
THIS WEEK’S TASTY RECIPE: Gallete des Rois By JEAN DOHERTY This is a French cake that celebrates the Epiphany: The day when the Three Kings visited the baby Jesus. As part of French tradition, a bean or small china “feve,” or favor, is hidden in the cake. The person who finds the “feve” in his or her slice becomes king or queen for the day. We had this tradition in Ireland for Halloween and the “favor” was a ring. • 1/4 cup almond paste • 1/4 cup white sugar • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened • 1 egg • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour • 1 pinch salt • 2 packs of frozen puff pastry, thawed • 1 egg, beaten Place the almond paste in a food processor with about half of the sugar, and process until well-blended. Then add the butter and the remaining sugar and process until smooth, then blend in 1 egg, vanilla extract, almond extract, flour and salt. Set aside. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, and set aside.
Roll out one sheet of the puff pastry. Keep the pastry cool, don’t knead or stretch it. Repeat with the second sheet of pastry. Refrigerate both sheets. Mound the almond filling onto the center of the pastry that is on the baking sheet. Leave about 1 1/2 inch margin at the edges. Wet the margin with a little water so as it’ll stick together. Don’t forget the little favor in the filling! Place the second sheet of pastry on top, and press down the edges to seal. Beat the remaining egg with a fork, and lightly brush onto the top of the galette. Use a knife to make a criss cross pattern in the egg wash, and then prick several small slits in the top to vent steam while baking. Bake for 30 minutes in the preheated oven until the top is a deep golden brown. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Eat it warm… You are the chef! H

ADAM & EASE Wine Tasting 101 By ADAm sTRoNG get in your mouth. “Supple” describes a wine that is not too tannic. A wine’s “Body” is both the sense of alcohol in the wine and the sense of feeling in the mouth; a “full-bodied” wine should feels “thick,” like cream feels thicker than milk. “Dry” wines lack the perception of being sweet, which is the case with most table wines. “Smokey” wines, as the name suggests, demonstrate the flavors and smells of different types of smoke. In a perfect world, each guest will have a glass each for white, red, and sparkling wines. If you don’t have enough glasses to go around, make sure you rinse each one between pours. Connoisseurs know that it is best to progress from whites to reds, with the lightest selection served first and the darkest last. Starting with the Prosecco, you will move to a Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay,
and up the line to the most full-bodied of your reds. Make sure you take time to sip, savor, and experience each selection. When it comes to the actual tasting, it’s important to remember the Five S’s of Wine-Tasting: See, Swirl, Smell, Sip, and Savor. If this is a bona fide wine-tasting, you should have some selections of cheeses to compliment the different vintages. Naturally, when you are dealing with individual tastes, a great deal is subjective, but there are certain combinations that are especially agreeable. For a Sauvignon Blanc, try Feta, Swiss, and even cream cheese. Chardonnay goes deliciously with Gouda, Gruyere, young Brie, and Provolone. Riesling and Monterey Jack make a divine combo for tasting, and your full-bodied reds are a perfect pairing with Bleu cheese,
Gorgonzola, strong Cheddar, and Roquefort. Baby Swiss, Pecorino, mild Cheddar, and goat cheese are excellent for sparkling wines. Other foods that go great with your wine selection are water crackers, which lack an overpowering flavor and make a good way to absorb the extra wine that’s left in your mouth between pours. Strawberries and peaches are an old school compliment to lighter, sweeter wines, and almonds are both tasty and accommodating to other flavors you will be enjoying. Make sure you take plenty of time and opportunity to discuss the various flavors and vintages you’re experiencing. Part of the charm of a home wine-tasting is sharing your thoughts and experiences as you make your way from bottle to bottle. Since everyone’s tastes—and taste buds—are different, there are no right and wrong answers, and everyone’s opinion matters. After You & Co. have enjoyed your first goround, it’s time to open those second bottles and The party’s not over yet! Now’s the time to open up those second bottles you’ve put on reserve, and get radey for your next successful wine-tasting party. H

BAR GUIDE
You don’t have to be a sommelier—or even know what one is—to host an entertaining and interesting wine-tasting party in the comfort of your own home. Whether or not you already know what to pour, and how to pair, these tips can make your next—or first!—wine-tasting event a smash. Pull up a grape leaf, here’s what you will need to know: It’s a good idea to limit the number of selections you offer to around six different wines. With this number, you should include three reds (for instance, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel), two whites (such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Pinot Grigio), and a Prosecco. This last is an Italian white wine, usually a Dry or Extra Dry sparkling wine that has become very popular over the last decade as a moderately-priced alternative to Champagne. Assuming a tasting party with you and seven guests—eight persons total—you should purchase two bottles of each selection. This will allow for ten tastings per bottle, at two ounces per tasting, and also leave a bottle of each wine for you and your friends to enjoy later. Here are a few terms sommeliers use to describe and measure the various qualities found in wines. Learn them before your guests do! “Acidic” describes the tart or sour quality of a particular wine. “Tannic” measures tannins, which create that “puckery” feeling you

NO EXCUSES: JUST DO IT... NOW! By TOM BONANTI
You could not have made a better New Year’s Resolution than to dedicate more time to achieving a fitter, healthier, more beautiful body. Now that we are nearly finished with January, why are you still making excuses to put off going to the gym?
Perhaps you need to be reminded that besides making you look better, regular exercise can also prevent obesity, heart disease, high cholesterol, hypertension, Alzheimer’s disease, and Type 2 diabetes. In addition to these bonuses, many people who suffer from anxiety and depression have found that regularly working out can significantly elevate their moods and boost their selfesteem. Here are a few commonly held excuses for not exercising, and why you need to get over yourself and get to the gym today: 1. “I’m too damn busy to exercise.” Well, that just doesn’t hold water with me. You must make time for those things that matter to you most – your family, job, social life, etc. Your health is just as important as any of these. Schedule your workouts into your daily activities and stick to it! Get up an hour earlier and take a power walk before going to work. Pack a gym bag and stop at the gym on your way home instead of going to “happy hour.” You must make time for those things that are important to you. Some of the busiest, most successful people I know are also some of the fittest and healthiest as well. 2. “Exercise is boring.” Maybe you are the one who is boring. Doing the same things every time
you hit the gym will produce diminishing results, and leave you bored and frustrated. Define your goals, change your workouts, and hire a personal trainer to help you come up with a new routine. Try yoga, swimming, or any of the classes offered at your gym or community center. Don’t be lazy or shy. There are a myriad of opportunities to become fit and healthy in sunny South Florida. 3. “I’ll put off exercising until it gets warmer.” While you procrastinate, you also become fatter and more sedentary, and unhappy with yourself. There’s no time like the present to get up and get moving toward a new healthier lifestyle. Start with one morning power walk or one yoga class after work. You’ll see just how great you feel. And there’s no cure for those winter-time blue moods than stimulating and challenging activities. 4. “I can’t exercise because I have aches and pains and health issues.” You should never begin a new exercise program before getting a checkup from your doctor or health care professional. Sure, herniated discs, arthritis, high blood pressure, etc., are serious issues, but not impossible to deal with. For the most part, exercise that‘s done right can help you build flexibility at the joints and manage the pain of arthritis better than some traditional treatment programs. Regular training with manageable weights, yoga, stretching classes, and low impact aerobic routines have been shown to decrease pain and increase overall fitness levels. As the New Year unfolds, don’t get left behind by friends and co-workers who have already embraced the fitness lifestyle. Stop making excuses to yourself. Just get up, get moving and join the fun today. Contact Tom Bonanti at TrainerTomB@aol.com for more inspiration. H

NUTRITION
LETTING YOUR DIET HELP YOU SLEEP BETTER By ANDY KRESS Rest and the quality of your sleep play a vital role in your all-around health. The impact sleep has in our daily life affects many areas and the people in it. Not only does the body internally react to too little or too much sleep, but the way you react with others in your environment is also impacted. When sleeping, the body’s physical and mental restorations take place, allowing you to feel refreshed and energized upon awakening. The amount of sleep recommended for optimal performance is 7-9 hours a day. However, there are many different variables for how much sleep a person really needs. Age plays a huge factor in this total. Babies and young children require nearly twice as much sleep as the average adult. This is due to the amount of growth hormones produced. Childhood growth spurts take energy, which needs to be recharged through sleep. As we age, the nature of sleep changes, with less time spent in the deepest stage of sleep. This is when sleep disorders start to arise. While much about sleep is still not fully understood, scientists know that the human circadian rhythms are established shortly after birth and are maintained by two internal oscillators that act as your body’s natural clock. Some of the body’s natural chemicals help us stay asleep, it is our diet that plays the most essential role. Because hunger can tend to disrupt sleep, having a light snack before bed can help promote restful sleep. It’s a delicate balance, however. Having too much food tends to disrupt digestive health and creates discomfort, leading to insomnia. Alcohol used in small amounts helps to initiate a more restful sleep. Be warned, however, that as alcohol is broken down and metabolized within the body, one’s sleep may become fragmented and less restful. Binge drinking does not incite a deep restful sleep as much as you may think. It actually creates the opposite effect, making the sleep less restful and fragmented during the deep sleep cycles. Other beverages that you consume can disturb your sleep as well. Drinks high in caffeine normally have an adverse effect on your rest. Because the body builds up tolerance to caffeine, this is not true for everyone—particular heavy coffee drinkers. Most people who consume caffeine before bed have trouble sleeping. Tryptophan, on the other hand, is an essential amino acid that promotes dietary health and is a sleep inducer. It works by raising the levels of serotonin throughout the body, creating a natural sedative in the brain. This is one of the
reasons foods or drinks with tryptophan are used as folklore remedies for restless sleep. A cup of warm milk or some hot caffeine-free tea with a spoonful of honey is guaranteed to help you get a few extra “zzz’s” the all-natural way. Because carbohydrates help facilitate the body’s ability to allow tryptophan to enter the brain, eating tryptophan-heavy turkey in a sandwich is a sleep-inducing combination. Likewise, herbs and spices are an organic alternative to help induce sleep. Valerian root is one of the most popular choices as a nighttime natural sedative. Most brew this in a un-caffeinated hot tea, along with other ingredients such as chamomile, lemon balm and peppermint. Many of our poor diet choices before bedtime also affect our sleep. Eating foods high in fat and spice causes sleep disrupting heartburn and indigestion. Ditto: High fatty foods and sugary caffeinated beverages that have a deleterious effect on the hormones in your body as well. Disrupting these hormones can and will throw off your sleep cycle. Couple that with the unsightly weight gain and possible obesity that such a diet produces, and you have a lose-lose combination. A healthy diet is the easiest way to ensure a good night’s sleep. Your body will thank you if you take the time to make healthy choices before you lay your head to rest. H
