MIAMI, FL - When ABC kicks off the fourteenth season of Dancing With the Stars, Olympic swimming champion Greg Louganis hopes to go for the gold as a member of the show’s dancing cast. Louganis, an Olympic gold medalist who competed in the 1976, 1984, and 1988 games, says the hit series has broken many conventions, with openly gay stars Lance Bass, Carson Cressley, and Louis Amstel appearing as contestants, and Chaz Bono breaking the transgender ceiling last season. The next, he says, should be to include an HIVpositive cast member. “I don’t mind being the sacrificial lamb,” Louganis joked. “There are so many important issues that relate to our community, I would like to use the show as a vehicle to draw attention to them.”

Louganis cites ongoing awareness of HIV/AIDS, and the national focus this year on anti-bullying campaigns that reach LGBT youths, as well as the suicides in recent months of LGBT teens. “These deaths are so tragic,” Louganis notes, “and we need to come together to fight bullying in every shape and form it takes.” Louganis attended the University of Miami from 1978 to 1981 on a diving scholarship. He competed in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, placing second in the tower event. In 1978, he won his first world title in the tower dive. He won two world diving titles in 1982, and in 1984, at the Los Angeles Olympics, Louganis won gold medals in the springboard and tower events. In 1988, Louganis tested positive for HIV. That year, competing in the Seoul

Naugle Endorses Santorum for President: “Only Have One Choice” Says Former Lauderdale Mayor Known for “Anti-Gay Toilet” Rhetoric By PHOEBE MOSES FORT LAUDERDALE, FL - Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum, campaigning on Sunday, Jan. 22 in Broward County, received the endorsement of former Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle. During a campaign stop in Coral Springs, the former six-term mayor introduced Santorum, saying that conservatives “really only have one choice.” Naugle’s remarks and endorsement came a day after Santorum, a former U.S. Senator

from Pennsylvania, placed third in the South Carolina GOP presidential primary. Santorum finished behind fellow GOP contenders Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney.

Naugle, who was Fort Lauderdale’s longest-serving mayor, said of Santorum: “When you look at the candidate we're here to support today, his unwavering support for the unborn, his unwavering support for the Second Amendment. He's the only candidate left standing that has a position on repealing ‘Obamacare’ that makes any sense.” Although a life-long Democrat, Naugle endorsed numerous Republican candidates during his eighteen years as mayor. 80+ U.S. Mayors Come Out to Support Marriage Equality At Least Six Represent Florida Cities By BoB KecsKemety WASHINGTON, D.C. – More than 80 mayors of U.S. cities in 25 states have formed a coalition to support marriage equality. The group, “Mayors for Freedom to Marry,” was formed last weekend at the U.S. Conference of Mayors in conjunction with the LGBT right group Freedom to Marry. The coalition is chaired by some of America’s most visible municipal chief executives: Mayor Michael Bloomberg

of New York City, Mayor Thomas Menino of Boston, Mayor Jerry Sanders of San Diego, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa of Los Angeles, and Mayor Annise Parker of Houston, who is openly gay. Mayors for Freedom to Marry have called for the repeal of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), and the ratification of the pro-marriage equality Respect of Marriage Act.

No mayor of a major metropolitan area of Florida signed the statement, and none serves in a Miami-Dade County municipality.H

Discrimination Proves a Good Teacher WORCESTER, MA – Gay parents “tend to be more motivated, more committed than heterosexual parents on average, because they chose to be parents,” says Abbie Goldberg, research psychologist at Clark University in Massachusetts, who studies gay and lesbian parenting. According to Goldberg, gays and lesbians rarely become parents by accident, compared with an almost 50 percent accidental pregnancy rate among heterosexuals. “That translates to greater commitment on average and more involvement,” added Goldberg.

Gays and lesbians are also more likely to provide homes for difficult-to-place children in the foster system. Research suggests that gays and lesbians are more likely than heterosexuals to adopt older, specialneeds, and minority children. Preference may partly account for that, and may partly be founded upon discrimination by adoption agencies that put more difficult children with “less desirable”—in the opinion of caseworkers-parents. Furthermore, the research has shown that the kids of same-sex couples--both adopted and biological kids--fare no worse than the kids of straight couples in terms of mental health, social functioning, school performance, and a variety of other lifesuccess measures. Popular Conservative Radio Pundits Imply that “Gays Who Control Hollywood” are Pedophiles HOLLYWOOD, CA – According to Media Matters, a recent broadcast of Clear Channel radio’s “The John and Ken Show” included a discussion of the 69th Golden Globes Awards with news contributor Shannon Farren. The show which is widely known to focus on antiimmigration advocacy found itself commenting on the “emaciated” appearance of several actresses. Then host John Kobylt told Farren and fellow host Ken Chiampou that “gay guys control [...] the whole Hollywood look,” and that because “gays like bodies that remind them of 14-year-old boys,” and so actresses have to look like “14-yearold-boy stick-figures.” Excerpted from The John and Ken Show: FARREN: I don't watch [awards shows] because every time I do, I just want to feed them a burger, every actress I see. I just want to feed them, they look so emaciated. KOBYLT: I know they look so--that’s not attractive. CHIAMPOU: But that’s the game though. The show’s host, Jeff Probst, told EW that this season’s villain is gay Republican Colton Cumbie. “He doesn’t know it, but he is a full-on villain,” says Probst. “He thinks he’s the most charming guy ever. He’s a devil and I don’t even think he’s disguised.” The new season of “Survivor” premieres on CBS, Feb. 15. H

Gay Marriage Nears Veto-Proof Support in New Jersey TRENTON, NJ – New Jersey Democrats say they are within striking distance of securing enough support to override a veto by Governor Chris Christie of same-sex marriage legislation if chooses not to support it. The Wall Street Journal reports that state Senator Raymond Lesniak, one of the bill’s sponsors, estimates the chamber has between 24 and 27 supporters for legislation allowing same-sex marriage. It takes 27 votes in the 40member state senate to override the governor’s veto. A new Quinnipiac University poll released Jan.19 found that 52 percent of New Jersey voters favor gay marriage, the first time approval has topped 50 percent in the poll’s history. Support varies by party affiliation: majorities of Democratic (62 percent) and independent voters (54 percent) are in favor, while only 35 percent of Republicans approve, according to the poll. In 2003, New Jersey became one of the first states to authorize civil unions for same-sex couples. The bill now under consideration would allow couples with a civil union to “immediately” get a marriage license if they seek one. H

Rights versus Privileges Next week, Florida Republicans will decide which candidate will oppose President Obama in November. For voters both gay and straight, marriage equality will be a defining issue of this, the “Teens” decade of the 21st Century. There are men and women of goodwill, faith-espousing and secular, who will passionately disagree over this divisive topic, and they will express their divisions in the age-old ritual of democracy by voting their consciences, among other things. As of this writing, California, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Wisconsin, Illinois, Washington State, and Washington, D.C. have created legal unions for same-sex couples that offer varying rights and responsibilities of marriage. New Jersey has also created legal unions--not quite marriages, but offering all the rights and responsibilities of marriage to same-sex couples. Gov. Chris Christie said this week that he will veto marriage equality legislation, but one miracle at a time. At present, Maryland recognizes same-sex marriages originating in other states and jurisdictions, while not allowing such marriages to be held within its own borders. The novel laws of New Mexico do not specifically allow nor prohibit same-sex marriages or other types of same-sex unions--perhaps a subconscious legislative nod to the region’s history of Native American three-spirited-persons. Florida, of course, enjoys the tax base of one of the largest and most prosperous permanent LGBT communities in the world. Our governor, who describes himself as “an across-the-board conservative” (“I am pro-life and support traditional marriage,” sayeth Rick

Dear Editor: Regarding your report covering Broward County’s hate crimes numbers for the last reported year (“Broward County Sheriff on Hate Crimes: ‘We Don’t Want to Be Number One’”), during the Matthew Shepard trial, Chastity Pasley and Kristen Price (the respective girlfriends of killers Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson at the time of the event) testified that Henderson and McKinney both plotted beforehand to rob a gay man. That's what sealed the fates of those murderers even before any hate crime legislation had been enacted. Hate crimes legislation is intended to bring awareness to people and declare that the United States does not tolerate socially-targeted hateful acts. It proves the point that some crimes are perpetrated out of hatred for any given social class and that we, as a society of civilized people find these crimes to be particularly offensive. Unfortunately, some people don't completely get it. They believe that the point of hate crimes legislation and reporting is to

rights as anyone else. The government has no business in your private life, you know, so if one person is allowed to do something so should everyone else.” Demographics are destiny. I think it is reasonable to assume that the trajectory of marriage equality will follow that of gays serving openly in the armed services. When Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Senate Armed Services Committee, “No matter how I look at the issue, I cannot escape being troubled by the fact that we have in place a policy which forces young men and women to lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens,” he was making a case based upon issue that "extra punishment" for the perpetrators. Obviously, prosecuting attorneys have come to see the classification as a tricky bonus round in the game we call justice. The Broward Sheriff's Office seems to ascribe to that latter definition. I'm sure this belief is popular in Tallahassee as well. It would be quite convenient for Florida's Republican legislature and the taser-happy cops of North Florida to think of hate crimes reporting as something that's sort of pointless and excessive. I don't mean to imply that BSO doesn’t take hate crimes seriously and is concerned. But at the same time, there is evidence that BSO still might need some improvement in this department when compared to their peers. In a report issued by the Florida Attorney General's office in 2008, only 4 hate crimes were officially reported by the Broward Sheriff's Office. However, 25 hate crimes were reported by city police within Broward County. These numbers may be getting better—maybe—but there is still room for improvement.

National Association of Realtors Goes After GayRealtor.com WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Association of Realtors has filed a complaint with the World Intellectual Property Organization over the domain name “GayRealtor.com.” The domain name is owned by gay real estate agent Jeff Hammerberg, who runs the web site GayRealEstate.com which helps

connect home buyers and sellers with gay real estate agents. According to Domain Name Wire, GayRealtor.com appears to be a general lead site for Hammerberg as well as linking to his main GayRealEstate.com web site. In the U.S., a Realtor—the word is capitalized--is a real estate professional, usually a broker or salesperson, who is a member of the National Association of Realtors (NAR); only members of NAR are legitimately entitled to call themselves “Realtors.” Hammerberg told Domain Name Wire that there’s been an ongoing dispute between NAR and him concerning the domain for over five years. West noted that Pride Pharmacy is not 100% gay-owned and operated: there is a mix of gay and straight principals. “But with a name like ‘Pride Pharmacy’, we would have to be very gay-friendly,” he added. The price of prescription drugs is always of concern to customer, and West says that he and staff are sensitive to economic reali-

ties, and make every effort to keep prices for prescription medications as low as possible. “We’re here to help the community,” said West. “We are very much aware of other pharmacies’ prices on meds, and are very competitively priced. You won’t find medications priced higher here, and we will try everything we can to be less.” West said that Pride Pharmacy uses copay cards to cover a patient’s co-pay drug expenses. This could save customers potentially hundreds of dollars a month. Some save as much as four or five hundred dollars monthly. West explained that by not being a chain pharmacy, they have the flexibility to adjust without corporate oversight from hundreds of miles away. Through the door in the waiting area of Pride Medical is Midland Medical, a state-ofthe-art medical clinic with the ability to serve most patients’ examination needs. Midland is a one-stop clinic for diagnostic, medical, lab, and chiropractic services, as well as immunizations, prosthetics, boosters, Botox, and much more. “The one thing I really love about Midland Medical,” said West, “is the personalized service. The doctors actually know your name.” West explained that Midland is not an assembly line doctor’s office. Patients will

experience a different approach to their medical needs. “This is not the sort of practice where you take a number, have a seat, be directed to the first room, and spend five minutes with a nurse, be directed to a second room, wait another ten minutes with a nurse, then be directed to the third room where you actually see a doctor for about two minutes.” “We are compassionate with our patients,” said Anetha Jones, the practice’s head medical assistant. “We personally sit down and consult with our patients. Sometimes we feed them, or bring them food, whatever it takes to make our patients happy and healthy.” At Midland, West said, patients are seen by a doctor in a straightforward manner, and given their diagnosis “in plain English, not ‘doctor-eze,’ so the patient understands what the doctor is saying without a lot of medical jargon,” West added. Trudy Zengler, Midland’s office manager, said that Midland is the most caring medical facility she has ever seen. “Everybody here really cares about the patients. The

patients are family,” she said. “I think we put forth the effort to make sure our patients are taken care of and provide the best care we can.” Zengler has firsthand knowledge of Midland’s care and practices from an outsider’s perspective. Prior to her employment, she owned a medical billing company, which gave her the opportunity to interface with the operations of many medical facilities, and Midland was a client of Zengler’s company. That changed in 2009 when Zengler was hired to work at Midland. Zengler and the rest of the staff are well acquainted with West’s mantra about customer service. “Customer service is our top priority at both Pride Pharmacy and Midland Medical,” said West. “We are not your typical pharmacy. We are not your typical doctor’s office. We also have a very high ratio of keeping people healthy and out of the hospital.” West explained that recently he spent four hours helping a patient navigate his way through some insurance-related matters. The patient was talked out of his previous insurance plan by the insurance company’s representative. But his new insurance plan didn’t cover the cost of medication. The patient’s medicine bill was close to $3,000 a month. “He couldn’t afford that. Who can?” sympathized West. “It took about four hours, but we got him back on his original insurance policy. We go out of our way to help people.” Pride Pharmacy has been open for three years, and has Monday through Saturday business hours. Midland Medical has been in operation for almost six years, and is currently open from Tuesday through Saturday. H

The Big Tent GOP Mormons Latinos & Gays - Oh My! By NICK STONE

If you believe in equality under the law, it might surprise you when I say that a Mormon Republican is our best bet for president in 2012. Take a deep breath and keep reading. Let me start by saying that Republican candidates want gay votes. They just don’t think they are going to get them. In Republican

circles, it can be an uphill battle to get candidates to campaign in gay and minority areas. On the surface, it might seem that they don’t want your vote, but that’s simply untrue. There was a time when the Republican Party was outwardly hostile toward gays. This isn’t 2004, and George W. Bush isn’t president. Countless examples exist PHOTO: AP of the Democratic Party’s history of discrimination and repression, but I’ll forego that lesson for now. Just know that today’s Republican Party would truly surprise you if you gave it a second look. It’s often said that demographics are the future of partisan politics. Growing numbers of Latinos, blacks, and gays Mitt Romney: Gay-Friendlier Than You Might Have Imagined. are supposed to wipe out

the Republican majority forever. But what these pundits don’t count on is the core of the Republican coalition. They don’t know that today’s Republican Party is flooded with the ranks of two groups: young people with an intense Libertarian streak (and lots of gay friends with fabulous weddings to attend), and former Democrats who have been turned-off by their party’s Obama-Pelosi wing of big, intrusive government. You know these as the Tea Party. In New Hampshire several weeks ago, GOP frontrunner Mitt Romney was asked, “When was the last time you stood up for gay rights?” The moderator repeated Romney’s own words, “I think the gay community needs more support from the Republican Party, and I would be a voice in the Republican Party to foster anti-discrimination efforts.” Romney did not back down from his pledge. He said, “If people are looking for someone who will discriminate against gays, or will in any way try and suggest that people that have different sexual orientation in this country don’t have full rights, they won’t find that in me.” When was the last time he spoke out for gay rights? “Right now,” he proclaimed among

Republican challengers in a Republican audience. That Republican audience’s reaction: thunderous applause. Gays are not one-issue voters. Many of us own businesses: we don’t want them killed by over-regulation. Many of us have children: we don’t want to leave them with a mountain of debt. All of us pay taxes: we don’t want them drown our family budgets. Many of us still vote Democrat, because that’s what gays are supposed to do. South Florida LGBT voters led the way in 2010, swinging a full third of our votes to Republicans. With Mitt Romney at the top of the GOP ticket, I’m confident that this November will pave the way for a brand new Republican coalition that stands for liberty for all. If LGBT voters are willing to look forward, that will be the legacy of today’s Republican Party. If you want to see real progress, take a chance on a Mormon Republican who has an open mind. Or, you can support a Democrat who takes your vote for granted. H

The Gay Person’s Politician By AJ CROSS

In the midst of all the current political rhetoric, it can be difficult to identify the best candidates in terms of the issues relevant to the LGBT community, along with identifying the true supporters of same. I personally think it is important to make a voting decision based upon a broader spectrum of issues than a candidate’s position on gay issues, but the trend today is to ask “what will you do for me?” before asking “what will you do for us/everyone?” Since Hillary Rodham Clinton’s eloquent speech about gay rights last year before the U.N. High Commission on Human Rights, a leading issue at every level of elections, federal and state through county and local, is LGBT rights. Our own Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida’s 20th Congressional District, who also chairs the Democratic National Committee, has taken an aggressive stand against

any politician seeking to suppress gay rights. That aside, who is the right person for whom you should cast your vote? Should you vote solely based on that candidate’s positions on gay marriage, or domestic partnerships, or gay adoption? What if the Democratic candidate supports everything in the “gay agenda,” but wants to increase taxes? What if the candidate marches in Pride parades in full-blown drag, but has no interest in healthcare reform? While acknowledging the importance of the continuing fight for equality, intelligent adults need to understand our candidates’ positions, and research not only what they say

they will do, but also what they have done in the past, and how they conduct themselves as people. I don’t believe that it is possible for a person to truly separate who they are in their personal life from who they will be in their political life. Knowing about a person’s life can help identify certain attributes that they will likely bring to bear in elected office. In Fort Lauderdale, the non-partisan mayoral race includes Jack Seiler and

Earl Rynerson. Members of the LGBT community may recognize the fact that Rynerson is a gay man, but does that guarantee he will be the gay person’s politician? First as mayor of Wilton Manors, and now as Fort Lauderdale’s incumbent mayor, Seiler

twice advocated and passed domestic partnership ordinances. I remember the day he looked me in the eye and said, “A.J., I am fully committed to making this happen, and I will.” He was true to his word. Does this make him the gay person’s politician? My feeling is that politicians are destined to act “politically.” Considerations of political survival and decisions that seem illogical or simply wrong are par for the course. The question we have to ask is how genuine are a candidate’s aspirations and political promises? Will he or she be brave enough to stand behind their convictions when it matters? There will never be a perfect president, governor, or mayor, but there will be those who bring integrity, good intentions, and a true understanding of our needs to their offices. There never has been and never will be a “gay person’s politician.” There are simply politicians. Mayakoba: Mayan Majesty By PAUL RUBIo

Rising above the caricature of media punching bag, Mexico is finally regaining its stature as a truly majestic nation, eager to welcome tourists south of the border. And thanks to some recent laws and court rulings, today’s Mexico holds very special interest for LGBT tourists. After Mexico City legalized gay marriage in 2009, Mexico’s Supreme Court gave “two snaps”--in Z formation--to the Mexico’s 31 other states a year later, mandating legal recognition of same-sex matrimony. Now more than ever, LGBT travelers are heading south to explore a land of astounding archaeology, diverse cultures, and luxury hotels, and show their support for a country with a progressive stance on LGBT issues. One of the best things about modern Mexico is that it’s filled with topnotch luxury enclaves that easily rival the Caribbean’s most treasured islands. Case in point: Mayakoba, along the Yucatan Peninsula’s “Mayan Riviera.” Located five miles north of Playa del Carmen, Mayakoba doubles as a private community and ecological reserve, housing three upscale hotels, residences, and plenty of

biodiversity across 1,600 acres. Flanked by the turquoise waters of the Caribbean to the east and thriving mangrove colonies to the west, Mayakoba’s super ”green” hotels are built around complex labyrinthine waterways that connect the Yucatan’s underground sinkholes and the deep blue sea. Leight Reflections: Hopeless-Romantic-Revolving-Door-Syndrome By ARLeN LeIGHt, PHD

The short-lived relationship was rocky at best. You initially thought this man was really for you. Thinking about him made you feel whole, happy, and hopeful. He showed great interest in being with you. He had some great qualities, but right from the start you knew there were some “issues.” Being the eternal optimist, you figured you’d work at it in hopes of true love, romance, and relationship. You almost immediately felt a total emotional commitment. You found yourself thinking about him often--maybe obsessively--and projecting a life together way into the future. When the problems became greater than the “relationship” satisfaction, it ended with a feeling of relief mixed with disappointment. But now it is time to move on, and before you can blink an eye, someone appears with great qualities and, well, some “issues.” Despite these, why not see if this new man is “The One?” So you

wholeheartedly invest again, only to find weeks or months later you are ready to jump ship--again. Within days of its ending, another “true love” comes along. This pattern of obsessive-compulsive behavior is complex and multidimensional. The likelihood is that you often feel empty and lonely if you aren’t subject to the attention and “love” of a potential partner. The pain of each break-up is avoided by emersion into the next “relationship.” At its cause, you may have been subjected to childhood emotional neglect and/or abuse. By ignoring red flags or lacking the filters necessary to make wise choices, you are essentially “asking for” a repetition of that childhood abuse, neglect, and/or emotional pain. Unconsciously, you are repeating the “family-of-origin” pattern, which is both familiar and, ironically, comfortable compared with the prospect of true intimacy. The repetitive dating pattern is an unconscious attempt to heal the wounds of childhood, believing that any friendly interest shown upon meeting is an indication that this new person will fully love you. It is this initial apparent interest that is so alluring, bypassing your rational mind, which might otherwise realize the prospective partner is not really a good match. The limerance (the initial excitement phase of a relationship) provides a dopamine (brain chemical) response that creates a high which has the potential to be very addicting, and covers up any feelings of loss or grief associated with the last “relationship” or childhood pain. Despite the near-desperation to be in a relationship, the pattern actually sets you up for future loneliness--the very feeling you are trying to avoid.

To remedy the behavior pattern, you need to take some major, often painful, steps. These include, but are not necessarily limited to: 1. Finding a therapist who is not invested in your desire to be in a relationship. 2. Taking time off from dating to be by yourself. Feel the pain of loneliness if that comes up. Be with the anxiety. Time and your therapist will help you process these feelings and understand them--and yourself--better. 3. Working on feeling good about you. Fulfillment does not require partnership, and, indeed, to be a good partner you need to feel and be complete by yourself. Self love and acceptance are critical ingredients to bring into intimate relationships. 4. After a sufficient period of time, entering the dating world slowly. Don’t jump into a relationship with the first potential partner who shows you some interest. Have in mind what is important to you in a partner, and do not sacrifice Self at the altar of relationship. 5. Experiencing dating without “relationship” in mind. Don’t limit yourself to one person. Allow yourself to experience all different kinds of people. Have fun and take your

time. Interest from others should not be confused with love. 6. If you are going to date someone more than a few times, be sure they are emotionally, intellectually, and sexually available and compatible. Learn to say “no” if there are red flags, if the person is not right for you, or if you find you are giving up parts of you for the sake of a potential partner. The revolving door of hopeless romanticism keeps you going in circles, never realizing your desire for true intimacy. Get some help and start moving in the direction of your dreams. H.

Classic French cuisine generated many of the soups we know today. This is simple, easy, and so much more healthy--and delicious--than opening a can. What you’ll need: A lot of you want my recipes for soup, and this one is great because it’s easy. The whole restaurant industry is based on soup. That’s actually how the business started.“Restoratifs,” where the word “restaurant” comes from, and

1 big chopped onion 1 lb sliced carrots 1 large potato, peeled and cubed 1 cup chicken broth A good dash of good olive oil 1 sprig of fresh rosemary Salt and pepper

In a thick assed pan, saute the onion in olive oil until tender and golden. Add carrots, potato, broth and rosemary, and enough water to cover. Bring to a boil and then cook over medium heat for about 30 minutes or until the veggies are tender. Cool for 15 minutes. Fish out what’s left of the rosemary stalk. Transfer to a blender or food processor, and work in small batches; and process until smooth. Taste, add salt and pepper. Voila! You are a chef!

diningthe w i l d e a s t asian bistro By RIcHARD HAcK In a city full of Chinese restaurants, it is always a joy to find that gem of a place that combines extremely delicious and inventive Asian cuisine with a sophisticated ambiance that beckons to the more romantic among us. Tucked away on chic Las Olas Blvd., along the Hammarshee canal, Wild East Asian Bistro offers all that and more. Unusual by design, Wild East is housed on three levels—the main dining room in a cool industrial décor softened with faux bamboo and mood lighting, or two al fresco sections overlooking the canal, where active jumping fish seem to be putting on their own aquatic show day or night, and the occasional kayak or canoe will drift slowly by as if on cue. The servers move in hushed efficiency, appearing by some zen instinct when needed, and then disappearing into the background around the open kitchen where Chef Richard Ha performs his magic amid the leap of flames and stir-fry pans. While the extensive menu mixes Korean, Malaysian, Japanese and Thai dishes, it is the abundant Chinese offerings that always seem to get the taste buds eager to explore the over one hundred options that unfold like surprises inside a fortune cookie. Divided into a gastronomical map, the menu is sectioned into “Makimono (Rolls)” “Soups,” “Chilling (Salads),” “Warm Up (Lo Mein, Fried Rice, Chow Fun),” and the “Main Event” entrees featuring “The Land,” “The

Sea” and “The Field” to cover all the bases. The real challenge, of course, is choosing between the selections with poetic names like Ancient Chili Pepper Chicken--a hot number with chili pepper, scallions, and five-spiced soy ($17), Midnight Steak—bistro medallion chucks with shitake mushrooms, peppers, onions and black bean sauce ($21), Firecracker Noodles—a blend of chicken, ginger, pepper, chilis and scallions mixed atop udon, and Beijing—a half duck, cooked with scallions and cucumbers, and served with steamed pancakes and hoison sauce ($23). Our personal favorite from the entrée menu is the perfectly cooked Siam Sea Bass, which arrived at the table wrapped like a gift inside a banana leaf ($22). It doesn’t get any better if you like red coconut curry. The place has been a Las Olas staple for three years now, and you’ll find it bustling with regulars seven nights a week. They seem to find multiple favorites from the Sake selection, which includes a wide range of brands

and bottles priced from the $9 Tokuri Ikkon Blue Label Unfiltered to the ultra-chic $89 bottle of Wakatake Onikoroshi Devil Killer Shizuoka. The always fun Saketinis are abundant as well, with Sex on the Beach and Red Dragon two of the most potent ($9). If you are in the mood to experiment, skip the main menu entirely and head immediately to the colorful small-plate menu where each dish is a bargain at only $6. We always try to select several new options on each visit, although who can resist the classic Chicken Lettuce Wraps, Baby Shrimp Cups, or a heaping plateful of Sesame Chicken Noodle Salad—standard fare on every foray. With 52 items on the $6 menu, you literally can graze for hours. Among the most popular are Flaming Calamari, Crispy Beijing Duck Wings, Sake Clams, Grilled Miso Mahi, Lap Cheong Shrimp Lo Mein as well as assorted dumplings and fried rices. Owner Peter Wong has managed to do the impossible by combining a drop-dead location

and a delightful atmosphere with prices that can be less than a visit to Burger King. Credit his wife Emily for some of the more inventive $6 plates including the Thai Lime Noodle Salad, a combination of skinny rice noodles, with julienned carrots, celery, cucumbers, bean sprouts and the tiniest slices of grilled chicken this side of Shanghai. Though the idea of eating dessert at an Asian restaurant may not be instinctive, don’t pass up the “Sweet Endings” menu. Although our favorite Chocolate Trilogy—white, milk and dark chocolate mousse cake at $8— seems to always be sold out, a good second choice is Marquise Au Chocolat, a chocolate sponge cake with a sweeter-than-heaven ganache at $8. Big enough for sharing, though you won’t want to after the first bite. Even the simply refreshing Asian Ice Cream Trio at $7 is an outstanding choice—red bean, green tea and mango ice cream served in a large martini glass. It gives yum a new meaning. And don’t forget that after the meal, all of Las Olas beckons right outside. End your evening with a stroll up the boulevard, and people watch to your heart’s content. Wild East is open for lunch every day except Sunday, with dinners every night of the week. They are open till midnight on Friday and Saturday evenings, with a special late-night menu.
