heels of his nomination of the first openly gay justice to the state’s Supreme Court. Christie, 49, is on record opposing gay marriage, and last week he proposed an alternative to legislative action on the issue, saying that voters should decide whether to legalize same-sex marriage, the matter being “too serious to be treated like a political football.” New Jersey Democrats had hoped that by forcing a vote in the legislature, it would force Christie to either change his position, or veto the legislation and in doing so, show himself to be out of touch with the majority of voters. old openly-gay Republican mayor of Chatham, New Jersey, came a day before Christie promised to veto same-sex marriage legislation in the Garden State. Opponents decried Christie’s call for a statewide vote. Democratic lawmakers criticized the governor for sidestepping a civil rights issue, but Christie dismissed their concerns, saying that “people would have been happy with a referendum on civil rights rather than fighting and dying in the streets of the South.” That drew fire from Democrats, who pointed out that public opinion opposed civil rights for blacks in the Jim Crow-era South, and a referendum to end segregation during that time would have been overwhelmingly defeated. Fort Lauderdale Man Killed in WPB Car Accident 25 y/o Worked at Wilton Manors Clothing Store By BOB KECSKEMETY WEST PALM BEACH, FL - Israel J. Castillo, 25, was killed last week in an accident near the West Palm Beach International Airport. Castillo, who was known by friends as “Chino,” had previously worked as manager at Bottoms & Tops Outlet clothing store in Wilton Manors, and as a dancer at Johnny’s nightclub in Fort Lauderdale. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Castillo was in a pickup truck driving south on Australian Avenue, near the airport ramp, when he lost control and traveled into the median.
Once on the median, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said that he struck a traffic sign and traffic signal, then crossed James Turnage Boulevard
and hit another traffic pole before coming to a rest on the grass. Castillo was ejected from his vehicle and died. According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, alcohol appeared to have played a role in the crash. “He was my boyfriend for two years, and later became my employee--first at my Bottoms & Tops Jocks store, then the Outlet store,” said John Anthony, owner of Bottoms & Tops Outlet Store. WolfCuff Presents Benefit for Grateful Paws WILTON MANORS, FL – WolfCuff custom handmade leather wrist cuffs, arm bands and, body wear will celebrate their second anniversary with a benefit for Grateful Paws, Wednesday, Feb. 15, starting at 8 p.m. at Georgie’s Alibi on Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors. Grateful Paws is a local, not-forprofit, no-kill rescue organization providing much-needed services for cats and dogs in South Florida. “Grateful Paws is the animal rescue that I prefer most,” said Uwe Schroeder, founder of WolfCuff. “They step in when other rescues – for financial or other reasons – cannot help. When they take on an animal, they take it their vet, the Hollywood Animal Hospital, and if after medical treatment it is determined the animal will have a quality life, they’ll do whatever is necessary and possible to get the animal healthy and find it a forever, loving home. Grateful Paws is my favorite because it’s the last hope for the most hopeless cases.” “Over Christmas, they took in a ninemonth old pedigree husky that was hit by a car and the owner couldn’t afford the medical bills. Grateful Paws took him on and the surgery to save his leg was $1,800,” Schroeder said. “Grateful Paws found the husky a home, but the adoption fee is $300, which left a balance of $1,500.” An animal lover, Schroeder founded Wolf Cuff two years ago, producing custom leather wrist bands which were well-received by friends and customers.

Maryland House Speaker: Same-Sex Marriage equals “Civil Rights” ANNAPOLIS, MD – The Speaker of Maryland’s House of Delegates told clergymen and laypersons this week that marriage equality is “clearly an issue of civil rights.” Speaker Michael Busch (D-Anne Arundel) spoke on Tuesday morning in Annapolis, at a prayer breakfast that included members of the clergy, about his own transformation into a supporter of same-sex marriage. “I think I reflect a lot of people who have come a long way on the issue,” said Busch, who became a supporter of marriage equality during last year’s legislative session. The question to legalize same-sex marriage in the Old Line State began in earnest this week at a Tuesday hearing in the state Senate. That chamber passed marriage equality legislation last year, but it failed to pass in the House of Delegates. Gov. Martin O’Malley, a Democrat, has sponsored a reworking of the bill this year. H
Maine Marriage Equality Supporters Say They Have Required Ballot Signatures AUGUSTA, ME – Same sex marriage advocates in Maine say they have nearly twice the 57,277 signatures they need to include a marriage equality referendum on the state’s November ballot. The Pine Tree State’s legislature legalized same-sex marriage in 2009, but voters overturned the law at the ballot box later that year through a so-called people’s veto. Six states and the District of Columbia allow same-sex marriage, but none have yet legalized it with a popular vote. Activists submitted more than 105,000 signatures to state elections officials on Jan. 26, a move which will likely bring the issue before voters for the second time in three years. H

same-sex marriages in Washington. The vote split along party lines, with democrats voting 7-to-6 in favor. Similar legislation was approved last week in a state Senate committee. If legalized, Washington would become the seventh state to recognize marriage equality. A study by the University of California-Los Angeles law school’s Williams Institute reports that “the total spending on wedding arrangements and tourism by resident samesex couples and their guests will add an $88-million boost to the Washington economy over the first three years. This spending is likely to generate $8 million in tax revenue for state and local governments.” According to a press release from the report’s sponsors, estimates show that “same-sex couples will spend $39 million on weddings in Washington in the first year alone.” Study co-author Angeliki Kastanis, a Public Policy Research Fellow at the Williams Institute, noted: “That translates to approximately $3.4 million in tax revenue, given Washington sales tax rates.” State Rep. Matt Shea (R-Spokane Valley) offered two amendments to the House bill, one which would require six months’ residency in Washington State before applying for any type of marriage. During the committee vote, Shea warned that passage of the law could lead to discrimination suits against wedding-industry professionals, such as photographers or florists who refuse to provide their services to gay couples. Abbe Land, a member of the West Hollywood, California city council, has been tapped to lead the not-for-profit organization which spearheads suicide prevention programs for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth. Ricky Strauss, the Trevor Project’s interim chair, said that Land “is a recognized and respected health care professional who brings an impressive history of ensuring care to under-represented populations.” Since 2003, Land has served as coCEO of the Saban Free Clinic in Los Angeles. Between 1986 and 1997, she served as councilmember and twice as mayor of the City of West Hollywood. New Hampshire Gov. Vows to Protect Marriage Equality MANCHESTER, NH – New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch said Tuesday that he will veto any measure brought to him by the state’s Republican-majority legislature that strips its citizens of their “civil rights.” During his annual State of the State address, Lynch, a Democrat, promised to fight efforts to repeal marriage equality in the Granite State. While Republicans hold veto-proof majorities in both chambers of the state legislature, GOP members are divided on the issue, and the Republican leadership is hinting that they do not possess the necessary votes to override the governor’s veto. In his address, Lynch said, “New Hampshire has a long and proud tradition of fighting for the rights of all of our people and a tradition of leaving people alone to pursue their own happiness. As Governor, I intended to uphold that century’s old tradition and I will stand firm against any legislation that will strip any of our citizens of their civil rights.” H

TN State Senator Booted from Diner for Anti-Gay Views KNOXVILLE, TN – Tennessee state Sen. Stacey Campfield received more than brunch on Sunday at The Bistro at Bijou restaurant in Knoxville, when the restaurant’s owner refused to serve him because she considers his beliefs to be homophobic. Martha Boggs, the owner of the restaurant—located, coincidentally, on Gay Street—had heard a radio interview with Campfield in which the lawmaker made what she considered to be disparaging remarks about homosexuality. Campfield, who recently sponsored legislation requiring elementary and middle schools to teach only heterosexually-based sex education, told ABC News that he was taken completely by surprise by Boggs’ actions. “We were just standing there waiting for a table, and this woman came up to me saying ‘I’m not serving you, I’m not serving you, you hate gay people,’” Campfield said. “‘I said ma’am I’m not a homophobe,’ and I offered to send her links from the CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] Web site to back up what I said about homosexuality being a dangerous lifestyle, and being a risky behavior.” The CDC links that Campfield referred to include statistics from 2008 data which indicate that 54 percent of HIV cases diagnosed that year were from same sex contact among males, while 32 percent was contracted from heterosexual sexual contact. The data did not address female homosexual sex. Campfield, however, was not as thorough during the radio interview, claiming that it is “virtually impossible” to contract HIV or AIDS through heterosexual behavior. “My understanding is that it is virtually — not completely, but virtually — impossible to contract AIDS through heterosexual sex,” Campfield said. Boggs said she has no regrets, despite some local backlash. “It was one of those spur of the moment things. I didn’t think about what I was doing, but all I did was look at his smug face, and told myself I do not want to serve him. His comments have gone from stupid to dangerous and I think someone needs to stand up to him,” Boggs told ABC News. “I think Mr. Campfield is a bully, so I just stood up to a bully.” H

‘BODY BLOCKIN’ Continued from COVER Gusciora, one of two openly-gay New Jersey legislators, compared Christie to anti-civil rights segregationists. The governor called Gusciora and other critics “numbnuts.” He also chastised reports for giving credence to his critics’ remarks. “C’mon guys -- you’ve got to be able to call B.S. on those kinds of releases,” said Christie. New Jersey lawmakers passed a civil unions law in 2006, after the state Supreme Court ordered that marriage benefits be extended to gay couples. The law is being challenged by Lambda Legal,
which says that the measure doesn’t provide marriage’s full range of benefits and protections. Christie told reporters that Harris, his nominee to the state’s high court, has a record of advocating for LGBT rights. “If confirmed to the court, he would recuse himself from that matter because he did not want there to be the appearance of bias on his part on that issue,” Christie said. “My perspective on that issue was to put it aside because he’s not going to rule on that.” H
‘RIP CHINO’ Continued from COVER couple, Anthony was generous in his praise of Castillo. “He was a good person and had a good heart, and his intentions were always good. It’s just a tragedy.” Anthony said that this was the second recent tragedy for the Castillo family. Castillo’s sister died a month ago after being hit by a TriRail train in Hollywood. “The whole thing breaks my heart,” added Anthony. H ISRAEL CASTILLO was known to friends as “CHINO”

The Candidacy That Might Have Been Every four years, the American tribe engages in the Rite of Democracy known as the presidential preference primary. (Five states, Idaho, Iowa, Nevada, Texas, Washington and State’s Democratic--but not Republican— Party, hold caucuses.) I find this ritual somewhat distasteful, as it’s another excuse for Americans to break up into our component parts, focusing on the differences between us rather than the things which unite and unify us. This week, Florida’s Republican voters selected Mitt Romney as their choice to challenge President Barack Obama in the fall. The Democrats have been spared the almost fetish-like ceremonial Eating-of-One’s-OwnYoung this time out by virtue of Obama’s uncontested re-nomination. But for now, we are treated to the spectacle of the Grand Old Party of Lincoln and American statesmen like Everett Dirksen, Robert A. Taft, and Barry Goldwater, going picnicking on its own, with Romney, Gingrich, Santorum, and Paul locked in a contest of Who-Can-Commit-The-WorstAtrocity in the service of getting to do unto Obama in much the same fashion come this November. At times like these, I wonder if any of the Revered 2,977 Victims who fell to their deaths on 9/11 wondered if the unfortunate person who was plummeting beside him was a Democrat or Independent, Liberal or Tea Party-er. Although I am not eligible to vote in the Republican primary (I hold no party affiliation, although I tend to skew left in the Sensible Center), I was hopeful for the candidacy of Jon Huntsman, Jr., Utah’s former governor and America’s Obama-appointed ambassador to China from 2009 to 2011.

There are some things I find noteworthy about the 51-year-old Huntsman, much of it having to do with his relationship to his faith and upbringing. Huntsman is a Latter-day Saint or Mormon, but he’s not what members of that faith call a “Utah Mormon,” which has a negative connotation when made by Latterday Saints from elsewhere in the country, and refers to a parochial mindset and provincial ideas. Huntsman was born in California, a polyglot, open-minded part of the country (excepting, perhaps, for Orange County), and attended the University of Utah, which is considered the more secular of the Beehive State’s institutions of higher learning, as compared to its vastly more conservative rival, the Mormon Church-owned Brigham Young University (BYU). After attending the “U,” Huntsman transferred to the Ivy League University of Pennsylvania, another place he would be exposed to “big ideas.” (His distant cousin, Mitt Romney, attended Harvard, another “big idea” school.) Although he dutifully served a Mormon mission in Taiwan for two years--Huntsman’s father, Jon, Sr., whom Glenn Beck praised as “the only man I have ever met that I believe has the character of George Washington,” is a billionaire philanthropist and well-placed member of the Mormon hierarchy—the former ambassador professes an almost New Age theology. In a May 2011 interview with “Time” magazine, Huntsman was more cagey than a stripper in church (pardon the metaphor) about his standing with the LDS Church ("I'm a very spiritual person," as opposed to a religious one, he says, "and proud of my Mormon roots." Roots? That makes it sound as if you're not a member anymore. Are you? "That's tough to define," he says. "There are varying degrees. I come from a long line of saloon keepers and proselytisers, and I draw from both sides."). That one so cagey as to be worthy of Bill Clinton. Or Abraham Lincoln.

EDITOR On LGBT rights, Huntsman deeply contrasted with both party and church positions. Quoting a Huntsman spokesman last June, The Daily Beast reported that “Gov. Huntsman has long been supportive of civil unions. His position on that issue is the same as President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.” That article noted that “in 2004 Bush said the GOP was wrong to oppose same-sex civil unions and that it was up the states to decide how best to move forward. But he didn’t push for gay rights, as Huntsman eventually did.” Although as a candidate for governor, Huntsman supported Utah’s 2004 constitutional amendment which forbids same-sex marriage, he supported the 2009 initiative permitting civil unions, in spite of overwhelming opposition from his party and from within his church. While governor, Huntsman, who supports Second Amendment (gun ownership) rights, and opposes abortion rights, shepherded a legislative agenda that was worthy of the most cranky Tea Party member, including creating jobs while at the same time cutting taxes. Here’s someone who could have appealed to several camps at once, a—and I’m almost embarrassed to use the word— unifier. Sadly, that just doesn’t play well today in Iowa. Or Florida. H

Dear Editor: Naugle Endorses Santorum – OMG! I can only ask myself and the public at large a full list of questions; such as doesn’t Santorum already have plenty of crippling, degrading baggage without Naugle’s endorsement? Also, what kind of crazy person accepts an endorsement from the mayor of a large metropolitan city that left office discredited by his own preposterous statements and wasteful proposals? He was expelled by the city of FT. Lauderdale Tourist Council for his derogatory / inflammatory statements which insulted the large gay South Florida community, no? Even though I know the answer would be… a Republican… guilty of delusion. Oh for sure – Republicans love scandalous behavior. Do we ever get an honest, straight answer from any of the wife cheaters and divorcees defending the sanctity of marriage while condemning gay marriage? Naugle has plenty of his own baggage – we already know that every library (in the world) contains pornographic images, but only in the minds of the illiterate.
February 02, 2012
Naugle continues to show his ignorance and buffoonery by stating his reasons for the Santorum endorsement… the antiabortion issue and the Constitution’s Second Amendment. Like it is with too many of the similarly disengaged, the right to own as many weapons as one chooses is solid but the Constitutional right of privacy to do with one’s body as she (or he) chooses is far too indistinct for the right to decide upon. They oppose family planning yet are willing to let the world succumb to its biggest risk, over-population! We can all bet that neither of them is familiar enough with the document to quote its most valuable statement, “[…] ensure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, and promote the general Welfare…” Where else does the selfishness and dislike for “Obama-care” come from? Isn’t it greed? Don’t Santorum, Naugle, their families and many others receive the benefit of taxpayer funded healthcare? So how do we rid our fine city of this “frothy” pair? Shout it out and then flush it!

Grindr Hacked! Your Profile, Your Pics... Someone Else Behind the Wheel? by BOB KECSKEMETY SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - At least 100,000 Australian Grindr and Blendr app-users’ accounts were hacked this month. Grindr (for gay men) and Blendr (the equivalent app for straight people) are among the most popular social applications for smart phones worldwide. Grindr has over three-million worldwide users. The hacking allows naked pictures of users to be broadcast over the internet, or spread through Twitter if a linked account is also available via the phone. The hacking has caused a security crisis for the developer, and has left its users vulnerable because of the vast amounts of private information that is traded through the app. The hacker discovered a way to log in under another user name, and impersonate that user, including chatting and sending photos. The founder of the apps, Joel Simkhai, conceded both Grindr and Blendr are vulnerable and that he was rushing to release a patch to address the issues. Simkhai said he had originally been waiting until new architecture was built “within weeks,” but was now releasing an update to both apps “over the next few days.” It is believed the hacker changed the profile pictures of numerous Sydney Grindr users to ones containing explicit images. Q-Point
Elephants on Main Street by RON MILLS If you have seen elephants parading down the middle of Main Street, it is not the circus, it is the Florida GOP Presidential Preference Primary. With absentee and early voting taking place before the January 31 election date, the GOP Presidential hopefuls hit town big time.
So, let’s take a look at the remaining GOP candidates, and their stances on LGBT issues.
Mitt Romney: Even though Romney ran for the Senate in 1994 and noted that he was more “liberal” than Ted Kennedy on gay issues, when the Massachusetts courts proclaimed gay marriage legal, as governor, he did everything he could to deny the right to all, including going as far as telling clerks not to marry same-sex couples who came from outside the state. Romney has signed the National Organization on Marriage’s (NOM) pledge. The NOM pledge commits signatories to fight for "a federal constitutional amendment defining marriage, to appoint federal judges who don’t see a Constitutional right to same-sex marriage, and to back the Defense of Marriage Act" should they be elected to the presidency.
Newt Gingrich: As Speaker of the House, Gingrich led a Republican majority that passed numerous pieces of federal legislation to limit the rights of LGBT Americans, most notably the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). He has always been an unabashed opponent of LGBT equality. Gingrich also signed the NOM denial of marriage pledge.
Rick Santorum: In a political career that goes back to 1990, every other day Santorum came up with a new way to deny LGBT people their rights. Please do not Google “Santorum” in the presence of minors. Next stop for the Elephant Circus: Nevada on Feb. 4. H
Ron Mills is the President of the Dolphin Democrats, Florida's oldest and largest GLBT political organization. He also serves as the Campaign Director of the Florida GLBT Democratic Caucus and Affirmative Action Chair of the Florida Democratic Party. Ron@RonMills.us
Ron Paul: A states’ rights kind of guy, Paul has refused to sign NOM’s Denial of Marriage Pledge.

Tony Dee and Charlie Mielke Return to Wilton Drive Dynamic Duo Ready to Start Tropics Again By BoB KECsKEMETy The “dynamic duo” of Tony Dee and Charlie Mielke has returned to “The Drive,” working together again after a 20 year absence--this time at Tropics, which Dee recently purchased. Long before the opening of the Alibi and the “gay-ification” of Wilton Drive, the two business partners founded Chardee’s Dinner Club, at the time one of the very few gay-owned-andoperated fine dining restaurants in the area – one which became internationally known not only for its great cuisine but also for its live entertainment. When it opened, Chardee’s was the only gay business on The Drive. In the late 1970s and 80s, Dee sold four successful hair salons which he owned on Long Island, New York. Together, the two built and sold 60 condominium units. Then, in July 1990, they decided to move to South Florida to take a breather. The creation of the phenomenon that would become Chardee’s began on July 11, 1990, when Dee and Mielke walked into a Wilton Drive restaurant (the
current location of Bill’s), then called The Palms, looking for a place to host a friend’s birthday party. When they were told by the maitre’d that the restaurant was for sale, the two decided to purchase it. They closed on deal on October 1, 1990, and renamed the business Chardee’s--a combination of their names “Charlie” Mielke and Tony “Dee”--and within six months, the dinner club was internationally known. Mielke managed the kitchen and Dee managed the front of the restaurant. Chardee’s became known not only for its great food, but also for great entertainment. Dee spared no expense to
bring in world-class entertainers, including Jennifer Holliday of “Dream Girls,” the legendary Eartha Kitt, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Jimmy James, and Jim Bailey.
Chardee’s also became famous for its annual “Christmas in July” event, in which the entire dinner club was elaborately decorated in a Christmas motif for the entire month of July. Chardee’s also held numerous benefits for Poverello Thrift Store and Food Bank, and served complimentary dinners to their HIV-positive patrons on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Dee earned a name as one of the town’s ultimate showmen as he donned a black sequined jacket and emceed these events and others. By the end of 1991, the restaurant was doing extremely well, but Mielke and his life partner decided to move back to New York. Dee purchased his share of Chardee’s and, in February 1992 Dee purchased the entire blocklong building which housed Chardee’s as well as numerous small storefronts along Wilton Drive. That year, Dee married his life partner, Roy Rinicker. After the success of “Plaza Dee,” Dee purchased the property and building which houses Sidelines Sports Bar, as well as the property down Wilton Drive where Galanga is located. These acquisitions made Dee the single largest commercial real estate owner in Wilton Manors. Dee decided it was time to retire and, after five years, he sold Chardee’s to the late Don Hazlett. Hazlett operated the restaurant for another ten years, until 2005, when it was sold, and closed shortly thereafter.
Not long after this, Dee was approached by Jackson Padgett and Mark Negrette with the idea of renting the property and moving their bar, Bill’s Filling Station, from NE 13 Street in Fort Lauderdale to Wilton Drive. “I could not have found better tenants than Mark and Jackson,” said Dee. In 2003, Dee came out of retirement and purchased the Schubert Resort, located behind the Gateway Theater on Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. Dee oversaw a renovation of the property, which became one of the largest and most successful gay-ownedand-operated resorts in the country. He kept the Schubert for eight years before once again he decided to sell and retire. He planned to travel. However, after six months of retirement, the energetic Dee decided that there had to be “more to life than watching ‘Regis and Cathy Lee’ and ‘The View’.” He set his sights on another heritage Wilton Drive restaurant, Tropics. Tropics is owned by Dee’s once-andfuture business partner, Charlie Mielke, as well as Dee’s nephew. Dee owns the property and the building and will be doing all the major renovations both inside and out for both.

“Charlie wanted to do something,” said Dee, “and my nephew has another restaurant, so between the two of them, they were able to secure the business and I was able to secure the property, It’s working fine.” Dee says that he will be once again be ‘schmoozing’ with guests, making sure that Tropics lives up to the standards that he and Mielke set when they originally opened Chardee’s. Dee says he’s extremely excited to be working once again with his former business partner. “Charlie is like the brother I never had. We have been friends for 40 years.” “Working with Dee is like working with Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis--or working with the entire cast of ‘Saturday Night Live’,” said Mielke. “It’s laughter all the time.” “Remodeling Tropics has already started, and it will take us through the summer to complete,” Mielke says. “You will see great food, a new menu, Sunday brunch, and the Thursday evening never-ending buffet,” he added. “I find it amusing that I’ve come full circle,” Dee laughed. “It only took me 20 years to walk down the street from Chardee’s to Tropics.” H

UN SECRETARY GENERAL CALLS FOR AFRICAN LGBT RIGHTS: “Police Power No Match for People Power!” By BoB KECsKEMETy
ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA – United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon cited last year’s Arab Spring to draw attention to the conditions today for LGBT citizens of African nations. At a two-day summit in the Ethiopian capital, Ban said that the uprisings across the Muslim world were “a reminder that leaders must listen to their people,” then drove home the point: “One form of discrimination ignored or even sanctioned by many states for too long has been discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity,” the UN chief said. Ban invoked the fundamental human rights of all persons in condemning acts of violence and subjugation. “Repression is a dead end. Police power is no match to people power seeking dignity and justice,” said Ban, a South Korean who was born during the Imperial Japanese occupation of his country during World War II. Recent years have seen a rise in acts of discrimination against gay men and women on a continent where homosexuality is seen as contrary to cultural and religious values. Homosexual acts have been banned in 41 out of Africa’s 54 nations, including some who are U.S. allies, as well as those who receive international financial aid. South Africa is the only African nation which has officially recognized LGBT rights. Reports still indicate that gay persons face discrimination in rural parts of that country, in spite of constitutional protections.
Conditions elsewhere are no less volatile for gay men and women. In Zimbabwe, President Robert Mugabe condemned plans to end discrimination based on sexual orientation in his country’s new constitution, opining that gays are “worse than dogs and pigs.” In Zambia, discrimination against LGBT individuals has resulted in a huge drop in the number of men who engage in same-sex relations testing for HIV/AIDS and seeking health care. Human Rights Watch has urged the Zambian government to decriminalize consensual adult same-sex relations and to condemn homophobic statements. Malam Abdulkadir Apaokagi, a Nigerian scholar of Islam, has called for the death of LGBT persons, saying that gays are “perverts” who do “not deserve to co-exist with right thinking and decent people.” Apaokagi also said that “homosexuality and lesbianism are just too dirty in the sight of Allah, [and] those who engage in them deserve more than capital punishment. When they are killed, their corpse should also be mistreated.” Nigeria’s government has passed legislation that not only bans gay marriages, but also carries a 14-year prison sentence for those convicted of being gay. President John Atta Mills of Ghana has rejected calls to decriminalize homosexuality. “I, as president, will never initiate or support any attempt to legalize homosexuality in Ghana,” said Atta Mills. The UN chief said that nations must cease treating their people “as second class citizens or even animals.” Ban acknowledged that “confronting this discrimination is a challenge, but we must live up to the ideals of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.” H

JUICING & SMOOTHIES A SIP AWAY FROM A HEALTHIER YOU By ANDY KRESS
Just about everyone knows that fruits and vegetables are loaded with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and a vast array of other cancer and disease-fighting substances. Because of these facts, physicians and holistic healers alike will tell you to eat more fruits and vegetables, especially in their raw form. (Abstaining from processed fruits and veggies is healthier since most have lots of salt and sugar added to preserve them.) Most Americans don’t eat enough of the fruits and vegetables they need to maintain a healthy lifestyle, of course. In order to comply with the food pyramid, you would need to chomp and chew your way through six-to-eight servings each and every day—a near impossibility with our busy lifestyles and work schedules. This has led people to turn to a better and faster way of downing these nutritious foods without sacrificing precious minutes to dice, chop, peel and pick their way to health. Juicing is one way that ultra-busy, health-minded individuals are using to keep up with eating raw foods. Blending fruits and vegetables in a juicer is perfect for the person who is always on the go. One advantage to juicing is that more of your diet can come in raw form. Doctors and naturopaths contend that the food pyramids recommended amounts of raw fruits and veggies are inadequate, so juicing is one of the top alternatives to solve this problem. Juicing helps boost consumption of the large quantities of raw fruits and vegetables that the doctors recommend for optimum health. Additionally, by blending your fruits and vegetables this way, you provide yourself with a low-calorie treat that’s quickly absorbed by the body and supplies you with great energy throughout the day. Juicing also gives you a chance to be creative in the kitchen. With so many different fruits and vegetables with a myriad of flavors, your palate combinations are almost endless. Pairing the tastes that you like is an easy way to get the ball rolling. After awhile, it will be like second-nature pairing and blending the tastes you enjoy, or experimenting with new combinations that are dis-
tinctly yours. Whether it is a fruit or a veggie blend, know that your body will thank you for treating it to such a healthy cocktail. Smoothies are another popular alternative to ensure that you get enough raw foods in your diet. Smoothie shops are popping up everywhere across the country. This recent trend has turned into an epidemic that is out-rivaling their ice cream competitors. It’s a new way to get that sweet and cold sensation without guilt. It’s no wonder that heads are turning in this healthy new direction. Replacing heavy cream with healthy yogurt-blends cuts the calories in half on these tasty treats. Throw in some of your favorite fruits and you now have yourself a flavorful new mouth-watering hit. Using low fat or non-fat unflavored yogurt is not only healthier for you, but it will infuse with the taste of the fruits or veggies that you are blending. Herbs and spices can be added to enhance both taste and nutrition. Normally available in dried form, essential herbs and spices are more than just taste enhancers. They actually provide vital nutrients that the body needs to maintain an active metabolism. The creamy taste of the smoothie helps slide down those herbs and spices, while satisfying another important instinct—that urge to consume fat. There’s no denying that gravies, sauces, milkshakes and creamy desserts are tempting to us all. Vegetable smoothies with herbs taste fattening (even though they’re not), and allow you to spice up your life while getting what the body needs and naturally craves. Whether you are juicing or having a smoothie, just remember to choose your ingredients with care. The more nutritious the ingredients you put in your body, the better your energy output will be. Knowing the facts is your first step to staying healthy the fun, easy way. H

NIXON SAYS SHE IS GAY BUT NOT BORN THIS WAY
PHOTO: JARRETT TERRILL
By PHOEBE MOSES
Cynthia Nixon is feeling the heat from LGBT activists, following an interview published last week in the New York Times Magazine in which she said that her homosexuality is “a choice.” The actress, who played gingerhaired Miranda on HBO’s “Sex and the City” from 1998 to 2004, and in two subsequent films, has been in a same-sex relationship
since 2004. It was preceded by a 15-year heterosexual marriage that produced two children. Nixon said during the interview that she has received criticism for from gay rights groups for her positions on nature-versus-nurture sexual identity. "I understand that for many people it's not, but for me it's a choice, and you don't get to define my gayness for me," said Nixon, 45. "A certain section of our community is very concerned that it not be seen as a choice, because if it's a choice, then we could opt out. I say it doesn't matter if we flew here or we swam here, it matters that we are here and we are one group and let us stop trying to make a lit-
Religious Conservatives Declare War on Galactic Foe: STAR WARS’ “OLD REPUBLIC” By PHOEBE MOSES

The president of the Family Research Council is calling attention to a new threat, one of potentially “cosmic” proportions: the fictional Star Wars universe. In a weekly radio address entitled “Rebel Fleet Surrenders to Gay Empire,” Tony Perkins condemned software designer Bioware, developer of the online video game “Stars Wars: The Old Republic,” for including the option of same-sex intimacy between characters. In a not-so-thinly-disguised attack on LGBT rights, Perkins announced that “the biggest threat to the empire may be homosexual activists.” He said that “Old Republic”-an MMO, or “Massively Multiplayer Online” game—has sparked a backlash of
outrage among gamers and parents who are offended by the virtual same-sex relationships portrayed in the fantasy universe. Perkins claimed that 300 pages of complaints had been posted on the MMO’s forum. Said Perkins: “In a galaxy not so far, far away, Star Wars gamers have already gone to the dark side. The new video game, ‘Star Wars: The Old Republic,’ has added a special feature: gay relationships. Bioware, the company that developed the game, said it’s launching a same-sex romance component to satisfy some complaints. That surprised a lot of gamers, since Bioware had made it clear in 2009 that ‘gay’ and ‘lesbian’ don’t exist in the Star Wars universe. Since the announce-
mus test for who is considered gay and who is not." Science has yet to identify the cause or basis--biological or sociological--for sexual orientation. This week, Nixon ventured back into the lions’ den, seeking to clarify her own views on her sexual identity. Speaking with former Vanity Fair editor Tina Brown’s The Daily Beast, Nixon rejected attempts to label her, citing in particular the question of being bisexual. “I don't pull out the ‘bisexual’ word because nobody likes the bisexuals,” she offered. “Everybody likes to dump on the bisexuals. But I do completely feel that when I was in relationships with men, I was in love and in lust
with those men. And then I met Christine, and I fell in love and lust with her. I am completely the same person and I was not walking around in some kind of fog. I just responded to the people in front of me the way I truly felt." Her fiancé, education activist Christine Marinoni, gave birth last year to their son, Max Ellington Nixon-Marinoni. “In terms of sexual orientation I don't really feel I've changed,” the Emmy-, Tony-, and Grammy-winning actress noted in 2007. “I'd been with men all my life and I'd never fallen in love with a woman. But when I did, it didn't seem so strange. I'm just a woman in love with another woman." H
ment, homosexuals have been celebrating the news, but parents sure aren’t. On the game’s website, there are more than 300 pages of comments--a lot of them expressing anger that their kids will be exposed to this ‘Star Warped’ way of thinking. You can join them by logging on and speaking up. It’s time to show companies who the Force is really with!” The Sith first hit the fan in 2009 during a message-board posting on the developer’s Web site, in which complaints were made concerning censorship of the words “gay,” “lesbian,” and “homosexual” in the game studio’s forums. “[Gay and lesbian] are terms that do not exist in Star Wars. Thread closed,” said the company’s community manager, Sean Dahlberg, in an online response. Contrary to Perkins’ claims, the game, which was released in December, does not yet permit the inclusion of same-sex “relation-
ships.” In a statement made at the time of its release, the studio announced that “Due to the design constraints of a fully-voiced MMO of this scale and size, many choices had to be made as to the launch and post-launch feature set. Same-gender romances with companion characters in Star Wars: The Old Republic will be a post-launch feature.” H

You’re too hot to cook? Chillax and enjoy a berry cream—this is a no-baker and it comes together in the fridge. Or pop into “Le Patio” and have some! • • • •
1 cup heavy cream 3/4 cup sugar 1 envelope of unflavored gelatin One 10-ounce package of frozen raspberries • 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
Using an electric mixer or whisk, beat the cream until stiff peaks form. In a saucepan, over medium heat, bring the sugar, gelatin and 1/2 cup water to a simmer and stir until the sugar and gelatin dissolve. Remove from the heat, add the
berries and lemon juice and stir until the mixture begins to thicken. Stir gently when folding the cream with the berry mixture to keep the filling fluffy and the fruit intact. Refrigerate until set, a few hours or overnight. Serve with fresh raspberries or a sprig of mint. You are the chef! H

WORK OUT PAIN FREE
MATTY’S DELI ON THE DRIVE
IT’S EASY!
NOT KOSHER - BUT JUST AS DELICIOUS
By TOM BONANTI
By RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN
Have you ever wondered if you are performing an exercise the correct way, or if the workout you are performing is causing you harm? Physical pain is one way your body lets you know that something’s wrong. The old saying “no pain, no gain” is a bunch of macho horsesh**. When something hurts, stop doing it immediately, then breathe deeply, drink some water, and assess the situation before continuing your workout. Light stretching of the sore area is also recommended. Working out is supposed to improve your quality of life as you build muscle, stamina and self esteem. It’s not meant to debilitate you every time you go to the gym. A certain amount of muscle soreness can be expected when you begin a new program or beef- up a routine with new exercises. This soreness, known as delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS), usually follows the workout and lasts for a day or two. If pain persists or grows worse, don’t be too “brave” to consult with a physician. When sudden, shooting pain immediately follows a movement or muscle contraction, you must stop at once, or you may risk serious injury. Be aware of your body as it moves and how much you can realistically push yourself in order to see and feel progress. This is especially true for individuals with pre-existing joint or muscle issues. You don’t want to do something to make it worse. For certain conditions, by all means consult your doctor before beginning or restarting a routine. I’m referring here to things like chronic neck pain, shoulder impingement or rotator cuff issues, chronic low back pain, and chondromalacia (wearing of the patella). Once you’re diagnosed and treated for one of these ailments, only with your physician’s approval should you return to working out. Most doctors will tell you that the correct progressive exercise program can greatly improve or even eliminate many of the above conditions. The key is to always workout safely and effectively so that you won’t incur injury in the first place. Whether you are a healthy freshfaced rookie or a seasoned pro with an injury or two under your belt, there
are a few steps you can take to keep strong and pain free for years to come: • Don’t forget the importance of a 5-10 minute warm-up before you train. A brief walk to the gym from home or a few minutes on a recumbent bike can rev-up your metabolism and warm-up joints and muscles preventing injuries. • Stretch lightly before lifting weights. Save more intensive stretching of the muscle group you are working for between sets or after your overall workout. Greater flexibility means less chance of injuries during bodybuilding. • Weight training should be progressive. Begin with a light warm-up set, and then progressively challenge your muscles with the next few sets as you add weight gradually and carefully. Keep a journal of the weight you lift. • Always watch your form as you perform each exercise. Be careful. Get a good contraction of the muscle during the positive or concentric part of the motion and slow down on the negative or eccentric phase of the repetition. Make each rep of each set count. Your body is a work of art, and your workout is one the most important tools you have to shape and sculpt it the way you like. Make sure to perform your exercises in a safe manner in order to prevent injury and build a body that is symmetrically balanced with strength and flexibility. Think Matty’s on the Drive, and you’ll no doubt conjure up visions of a popular smoke-free gay club, packed with patrons spilling onto the parking lot at 2426 Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors. But there is a wellkept secret side of this house of 75¢ well drinks and chicken wings—a rather amazing New York-style deli that serves incredible fun food from 11 a.m. until 1 a.m. seven days a week. Those hours of operation alone would be enough to impress; yet, it’s not until you delve into the vast deli menu that you realize that there is something even more remarkable about this place. Legend has it that Manhattan is haven to the best delis in the world, but Wilton Manors manages to give its unique twist to the home of matzah ball soup and pastrami, while adding a few Florida touches to please the locals. The true assay of any deli is its corned beef, so we ordered a Reuben Sandwich on seeded rye to put the place to the acid test. At $9.75, including a sour pickle and side of fries, cole slaw, potato salad or cup of soup, we waited in anticipation, admittedly fearing the worst. When we think deli, we think of white octagon tile floors, ceiling fans, surly waiters, and signed photos of famous patrons on the walls. Matty’s is, of course, first and foremost a bar. Two months ago, the owner, Matt Auslander, expanded the joint by taking over the storefront on the west of the two-year-old club, adding a kitchen and seven tables, along with another service bar. No intimate boîte, the bright light from the street beams in through the open door and plate glass windows with such pride that there is no hiding either wrinkles or flaws from view, or the fact that this is still a gay bar. However, when our Reuben arrived, in this case accompanied by a side of onion rings ($1.50), it carried itself with a certain pride (part of a legacy that’s been around since the first Reuben was served in 1914) that any concern about ambiance was put aside and our attention turned to the large sandwich before us. The bread was toasted to crisp perfection, the ideal envelope to hold the

melted Swiss cheese, mounded sauerkraut, Thousand Island dressing, and thinly sliced, Angus corned beef that certainly looked the part. The first bite removed any thought that Matty’s Deli is a wannabe. The corned beef was wonderfully steamed, and generously marbled, ensuring that any concept of low-cal would be saved for another day. This was a messy, delectable ten-napkin treat that we rated among the best Reubens we’ve ever consumed. And the onion rings kept pace, with a crispy crust and favorably moist inside that gave new meaning to gluttony. Witnessed from an adjoining table, the hot pastrami sandwich ($9.25) looked equally as addicting, stacked high and thick on pumpernickel, cuddled by a pile of fries the color of caramel corn. While we would like to be able to report on the nearby ¾ inch-thick blue cheese chicken quesadilla ($8.25)—a nod to non-deli fare that can be found on the back side of the menu—the guy who ordered the meal wafted it down with the speed of a experimental jet, leaving only a vapor trail of delectable aroma behind. Also on the menu, deli-side: Turkey Club ($9.75), Hot or Cold Roast Beef ($9.25), Corned Beef, served as straight as it gets at Matty’s, with brown mustard ($9.25), Homemade Tuna Salad, on assorted bread or as a wrap ($9.25), French Dip, dripping with Au Jus Sauce ($9.75) and Fried Potato Pancakes ($5.50). Less traditional, but no less delicious we hear from our servers Steve (look for the clear blue eyes) and Drew (instant smile), are the Angus Burgers ($9.25), Veggie Burgers ($8.25), New York Strip Steak Sandwich (11.75), Grilled Chicken Sandwich ($8.25), and an old-fashioned Kosher Beef Dog, complete with relish, sauerkraut, chili, cheese and sautéed onions ($6.75), plus salads served in bowls the size of Texas. A visit to Matty’s Deli in Wilton Manors is to return to a time when calories counted but not as much, and cholesterol wasn’t invented. Make it a fun weekly stop on your schedule and tell ‘em Mark Magazine sent you! H
