Why Did Gemmell Jump? Family of Suicide Victim on Gay Cruise Wants Answers By CLIFF DUNN SAN FRANCISCO, CA - The family of an Irish passenger who committed suicide this month during the Atlantis Events gay cruise is seeking answers about the man’s death. Kenneth John Gemmell, 30, took his own life Feb. 3 on the “Allure of the Seas” cruise ship off the coast of Cozumel, Mexico.

overboard intentionally." Gemmell was one of more than 4,500 passengers on board the “Allure of the Seas” as it sailed roundtrip from Florida to Mexico, and back again. “He was alone on the balcony in his stateroom on Deck 11 when he stepped on top of the balcony table in order to jump over the balcony railing,” the spokeswoman said. “The footage is consistent with an eyewitness report from another guest,” she added. The “Allure” cruise was chartered by Atlantis Events, the self-described “largest company in the world dedicated to creating unique vacations for the gay and lesbian community.” Gemmell’s father, James, told the Irish Independent that “Kenneth was not a suicide risk. He went out on a holiday and was very happy. We just don't understand what happened.”

Gemmell, a flight attendant for UAE Airlines stationed in Dubai, was a native of Bailieborough, County Cavan, Ireland. The Irish Independent newspaper reported this week that Gemmell’s family is “desperately trying” to understand what transpired two weeks ago during those fateful early morning hours. “They particularly would like to hear from the person who witnessed him going overboard. The family has said they want nothing more than to understand what drove their son, who had just turned 30 last Tuesday,” noted the Examiner.com. The seven-day cruise left Fort Lauderdale on Sunday, Jan. 29, and was heading for Cancun before returning to Fort Lauderdale. Although Gemmell’s family insists the man "was not a suicide risk," a spokeswoman for Royal Caribbean Cruises Limited told reporters that the ship’s closed circuit video "clearly" shows "the guest went

LOS ANGELES, CA - The shock of learning the news of her mother’s sudden death proved too traumatic for Bobbi Kristina Brown, who was hospitalized last weekend at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. In a sad coincidence to the death of her mother, entertainer Whitney Houston, the teenager was staying at the Beverly Hills Hilton, the same hotel in which Houston was found dead on Feb. 11. Bobbi Kristina was in the hotel lobby when she learned of her mother’s death at 3:55 p.m. (PST). Police officers on the scene refused to allow the teenager into her mother’s suite, and, according to
People magazine, Houston’s daughter had a “complete breakdown.” Bobbi Kristina was treated in the hospital for a stressinduced panic attack and later released. Her father, singer Bobby Brown, issued a statement that read, in part, “My daughter did visit with doctors at CedarsSinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. She has been released and is presently with my family including her siblings. Obviously the death of her mother is affecting her. However we will get through this tragedy as a family.” H

Central Florida Porn Couple Commits First Degree Murder Jason “Addison” Andrews Pleas Guilty
Clay Court Classic Gay Tennis Tournament Draws Crowds from Everywhere
By RORY BARBAROSSA NEW PORT RICHEY, FL – Porn star Jason Andrews, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to first-degree murder in the 2010 killing of tattoo parlor owner Dennis "Scooter" Abrahamsen. Andrews was facing capital murder charges and the death penalty. His plea means the adult film actor, 28, will spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole. In an emotional hearing, a relative told the accused “You should rot in hell,” adding, “You shouldn't breathe the same air we breathe,” according to Pasco County Assistant State Attorney Mike Halkitis. "Is this in lieu of the state seeking the death penalty?" Circuit Judge Michael Andrews—no relation to the defendant—asked his defense attorney. "It is," the lawyer answered. Abrahamsen, 41, was found dead on a massage table in his New Port Richey home in May 2010. He had been bludgeoned and stabbed after having hosted a sex party the previous night before, according to detectives. Investigators say that Andrews, a part-time DJ and porn actor, and his girlfriend, Amanda Logue, then-28, killed the tattoo parlor owner after Logue was hired to work at the party as a prostitute. The married Logue met Andrews on the set of a 2009 porn shoot, and began a relationship with him. Police say the pair sent text
messages to one another while she “serviced” Abrahamsen and Andrews waited outside. "I'm so glad you're really committed to this take [sic],” courts records indicate Andrews sent to Logue. “Keep eyes for a knife, etc for me!” Logue replied that she was looking forward to having sex with Andrews “after we kill” Abrahamsen. "Just get him on his face either bash or tell me to get in and where to go," Andrews advised. After killing Abrahamsen, police say that Andrews and Logue stole a laptop and several cameras, as well as $6,000 in cash. The couple was arrested a few days later in Largo, Florida after they attempted to steal less than $70 worth of items from a local Beall’s department store. They were arrested a few days later on charges of stealing $67.97 worth of clothes from Beall's in Largo. Detectives then questioned them about the murder, but both were released on bail. By the time Logue was arrested on the murder charge May 27, 2010, Andrews had vanished. He was caught in July 2010 in Chattanooga, Tenn., by U.S. Marshals and likewise charged in the killing of Abrahamsen. Logue’s trial is expected to begin in May. It is not known whether Andrews will testify against his girlfriend. H

WILTON MANORS, FL – Gay athletes who excel at tennis are not a new phenomenon. The ranks of LGBT tennis professionals and amateurs includes household names like Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King, as well as Renee Richards, the first and only male-to-female transsexual ever to play the US Open, and herself no stranger to South Florida tennis courts. This weekend, dozens of LGBT tennis players will descend upon Greater Fort Lauderdale for the Seventh Annual Clay Court Classic, presented by the South Florida Tennis Club (SFTC). The event runs from Feb. 17-20 at The Tennis Club of Fort Lauderdale, 600 Tennis Club Drive, in the Lazy Lakes area just south of Oakland Park Blvd. The Clay Court Classic is a singles and doubles tournament that is open to all skill levels, including split divisions, held under the aegis of the Gay & Lesbian Tennis Association (GLTA), a national organization formed in 1991 which has grown into an international body overseeing groups in 58 member-cities, and 70 annual tournaments held on five continents. The South Florida Tennis Club is a nonprofit organization which was
By PHOEBE MOSES formed with a mission to develop and coordinate tennis activities for South Florida’s LGBT community. The group hosts two yearly tournaments: The Clay Court Classic, a singles and doubles tournament held each President's Day Weekend, and The Spring Fling, a doubles-only tournament held in early May. The local organization also works to promote tennis as an inclusive sport like swimming rather than a snobby country club activity like golf. The expansion of gay tennis across Europe and the sport’s inclusion in recent Gay Games have made their job easier. In addition to hosting the tournaments—and LGBT tennis enthusiasts from across the globe--the Club supports local charities and service organizations through charitable giving and fundraising via its tournaments. The Classic’s tournament charity is SunServe, a nonprofit social service agency that provides quality, compassionate, and progressive care for youths, minorities, seniors, families, and those with life-challenging physical or emotional conditions. Anti-bullying campaigns and service to those in financial need are also part of SunServe’s indispensable work. H

Roman Catholic Church Convenes Conference on Sexual Abuse Cardinal says “Eliminate this Scourge from the Priesthood.” By CLIFF DUNN
On Feb. 6, Roman Catholic Church officials convened for a four-day conference about preventing the sexual abuse of minors by members of the clergy. The symposium is an historic one, attended by 200 delegates and described by church leaders as an effort to respond to a volatile issue that has plagued the world’s largest Christian denomination for decades. “We need to help each other find the best ways to help victims, protect children,” said Cardinal William Levada, who oversees the Vatican office that investigates allegations of clerical abuse. In a keynote address to an audience that included more than 100 bishops and 30 superiors of religious orders, as well as victims of clergy abuse, Levada said the goal of the conference was for priests “to be aware of this scourge and to eliminate it from the priesthood.” Pope Benedict XVI, leader of the world’s one billion Roman Catholics, expressed the hope that “many bishops and religious superiors throughout the world may be helped to respond in a truly Christlike manner to the tragedy of child abuse.” The conference, titled “Towards Healing and Renewal,” was meant as a response to allegations that the Vatican has been negligent and inefficient in fostering policies that definitively address the sexual abuse crisis. The crisis has led to unprecedented criticism from even faithful Roman Catholics, as well as a complaint filed against the church with the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands. Terence McKiernan, a vocal critic of the church’s handling of the abuse scandals and president of BishopAccountability.org, called the conference a publicity stunt by Vatican officials designed to “change the subject and look like progress. The Vatican is afraid, and it has reason to be,” said McKiernan in reference to the criminal
complaint filed with The Hague. Officials have made an effort at transparency in addressing the challenges the church faces. “We have to realize that there are many different attitudes on the part of church leaders, that there is no one Church, that there are forces who resist and those who work for the betterment of the situation,” Father Hans Zollner of the Gregorian University said at a news conference prior to the symposium. “Our aim is to support those forces and change attitudes and dealing with abuse.” The Vatican has been accused of using its influence with secular officials in an effort to mitigate the allegations of criminal and sociopathic behavior by priests and church leaders. The Vatican’s pointman on the abuse scandal, Monsignor Charles Scicluna, told reporters that abusing children is “a sin” as well as “a crime, and the Church has a duty to cooperate with civil society and with its just requests for cooperation to prevent the crime.” In spite of Vatican assurances, critics of the priestly sex scandal need more convincing that the church is doing everything it can to bring a dark chapter in its 2,000-year-old history to a definitive conclusion. “Bishops pat themselves on the back by doing training programs and education as though that were the problem,” said Barbara Blaine, president of the Survivor Network of those Abused by Priests, or Snap. “Lack of knowledge is not what causes abuse but lack of courage and decisions on the part of church officials.” “They should be turning over known predators to the police and removing them from ministries, and they should be informing the public of their identity,” Blaine added. “If they did that, it would be far easier for us to believe that there was a real intent in protecting children.” H

‘TRAGEDY AT SEA’ Continued from COVER The body of their son—who celebrated his 30th birthday during the first days of the “Allure” cruise—has not been recovered. James Gemmell and his wife, Colette, say they fear something “untoward” may have transpired during the cruise. Those fears were exacerbated by reports that their son had “exchanged words” with a crewmember—possibly a bartender—on the evening before his death, and that the crewman in questioned failed to re-board after having disembarked in Cozumel. The cruise line disputed this version of events, claiming they are not “aware” of an altercation between Gemmell and one of the crew. The spokeswoman for the company also said there were no unaccounted crewmembers following the stop in Cozumel. South Florida law enforcement agencies as well as the Mexican and U.S. coast guards were alerted by ship’s officers when Gemmell’s absence was confirmed. "The
ship made multiple public announcements and began a complete search of the ship, in efforts to locate the guest,” said a statement from Royal Caribbean. “When the guest did not respond to the pages and was not found onboard, the captain alerted the local authorities of the situation," the statement read. California Student Commits Suicide
Friends Say Bullying was a Factor, Officials Deny This LA CRESCENTA, CA – A California high school student took his own life on Friday during the school’s lunch hour in the presence of hundreds of students. Sophomore Drew Ferraro, 15, leaped to his death from the roof of a threestory classroom building at Crescenta Valley High School, falling into the courtyard below. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s officials say that investigators are looking into the cause of Ferraro’s suicide, and school officials say they are not certain that the teen took his life because of bullying. “There’s no indication, whatsoever, that bullying played into this scenario,” Glendale Unified Schools spokesperson Steven Frasher told reporters. The teen’s friends expressed a different story, telling CBS News last weekend that the Ferraro had been harassed and bulled to the edge of despair. According to one, he longer wanted to attend school. At a candlelight vigil, student Olin Tellefsen told CBS Los Angeles that Ferraro was bullied by other male students, including a physical altercation with several boys that resulted in a severe beating. These events preoccupied Ferraro in recent weeks. “He always seemed like he had something on his mind,” Tellefsen said. A friend who witnessed Ferraro’s suicide said that the bullying affected the teen to the point that he didn’t want

SFPD Produces First Law Enforcement ‘It Gets Better’ Video
Pioneering Same-Sex Marriage Couple Calling it Quits LOS ANGELES, CA - One of California’s first same-sex couples to marry is becoming one of the first to call it a day. Robin Tyler and Diane Olson’s 2008 lawsuit led to the California Supreme Court decision to overthrow the state's ban on gay marriage. The couple has announced that they filed for divorce last month in Los Angeles. "People keep calling it a gay divorce, but there's no such thing as a gay divorce in California - it's just a divorce," said Tyler. "The reasons aren't sensationalistic any more than any other long-term couple." Tyler, 69, and Olson, 58, sued the state for the right to marry in 2004. The suit was later rolled into a larger suit filed by the city of San Francisco, which had been ordered by then-Mayor Gavin Newsom to conduct same-sex marriages. The women, who had already been in a committed relationship for 14 years, were the first to celebrate nuptials in Los Angeles County. They were among 18,000 gay couples to wed before the Golden State’s constitution was amended in 2008 by Proposition 8 to prohibit marriage equality. Their attorney, Gloria Allred, said of Tyler and Olson, “They loved and were committed to each other in a relationship for many years before they married,” adding that “I am sad
SEATTLE, WA – San Francisco has become the first U.S. city with a police agency to produce an “It Gets Better” video. The campaign is a nationwide drive founded by author and activist Dan Savage to end suicides among LGBT teens, and to raise awareness about the bullying of gay youths. Mayor Ed Lee praised his law enforcement arm. “Our Police Department joins the nationwide campaign to end bullying of LGBT youth by producing a heartfelt video that provides a message of hope and encouragement that it will get better,” the mayor offered. Police Chief Greg Suhr added: “This is a first of its kind video for the SFPD and for any law enforcement agency in the United States.” “I hope this message of encouragement will give hope to anyone who might be bullied because of who they are. The members of the SFPD will continue to work with all young people and reach out to the communities, as mentors and role models,” Suhr said. In 2010, Seattle-based Savage and his husband Terry Miller launched the “It Gets Better Project” to offer support and encouragement to gay kids after the suicides of teenagers who were bullied because they were gay. Mayor Lee said that SFPD’s video continues the City by the Bay’s tradition of tolerance. “San Francisco is a city that prides itself on embracing equality for all and this video is another great example of our commitment to reinforcing our City’s values,” Lee said. Garden State Lawmakers Approve Marriage Equality OLYMPIA, WA – Last week’s passage of a marriage equality bill by the Washington State Senate has mobilized opponents, with the Family Policy Institute of Washington (FPIW), which opposes Gov. Chris Gregoire's plan to legalize same-sex marriage claiming that gay parents molest their children. On its Web site, the organization has published an article written last year by George Dent Jr. In the article, entitled “No Difference?: An Analysis of SameSex Parenting,” Dent, a professor of law at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, claims that “high rates” of gay parents molest their kids. Dent’s report reads in part: “Due in part to promiscuity, homosexuals have high rates of disease. Gay men became more cautious about sex after the onset of AIDS, but infection rates soon rebounded to their former levels. Gay men also suffer disproportionately from many other diseases. The tendency of male homosexual acts to spread disease may help explain the revulsion many people feel about them. Lesbians also suffer high rates of suicide, mental illness and drug and substance abuse. Although many homosexuals brag about the absence of gender discrimination in their relationships, those relationships are often abusive.” “The high rates of child sex abuse among homosexuals and bisexuals are also a cause for concern. At the least, given the uncertain effects of homosexual parenting, the children raised by homosexual couples are being treated as guinea pigs, which is troubling,” he added. Dent also claims that gay parents are more likely to raise children who are homosexual: “There is evidence that children raised by homosexuals are more likely to engage in homosexuality and to feel confused about their sexual identity.” FPIW’s executive director, Joseph Backholm, 30, testified last week before a Senate sub-committee and urged senators to put marriage equality to a referendum and let voters decide if “moms and dads do matter.” H

Gay Republicans Express Satisfaction with Romney Florida Win Say Florida is “Increasingly Supportive” of Gay Issues By CLIFF DUNN
Even as he struggles to convince mainstream conservatives that he is the logical standard-bearer to take on President Barack Obama in November, Mitt Romney’s triumph last month over the remaining GOP contenders in the Florida presidential primary has the blessing of the nation’s largest LGBT Republican organization. “Having Gingrich out there reminding voters that Romney has stated support for gay rights will … play well in Florida,” said Clarke Cooper, executive director of the 22,000-member Log Cabin Republicans at the time of last month’s primary. Romney’s victory over challengers Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, and Ron Paul followed a contentious Sunshine State campaign in which the candidates made every effort to paint themselves as the natural successor to the Ronald Reagan, while utilizing every means at their individual and collective disposals to break the late president’s so-called Eleventh Commandment: “Thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican.” Romney’s adoption of hardball tactics may have helped propel him to victory in Florida, just ten days after a steep loss to Gingrich in South Carolina. The former House speaker’s victory raised questions about the former Massachusetts governor’s viability as a national contender. Gingrich’s stumble paved the way for former Pennsylvania senator Santorum to claim the far-right of the playing field, a position which propelled him to triple wins last week in the Colorado and Minnesota GOP caucuses and the non-binding Missouri Republican primary. In December, Gingrich signed a pledge to uphold the Iowa Family Leader’s “Marriage Vow.” In a lengthy screed, the twice-divorced former Georgia congressman promised that, if elected “President, I will vigorously enforce the Defense of Marriage Act, which was enacted under my leadership as Speaker of the House, and ensure compliance with its provisions, especially in the
military. I will also aggressively defend the constitutionality of DOMA in federal and state courts. I will support sending a federal constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman to the states for ratification. I will also oppose any judicial, bureaucratic, or legislative effort to define marriage in any manner other than as between one man and one woman. I will support all efforts to reform promptly any uneconomic or anti-marriage aspects of welfare and tax policy. I also pledge to uphold the institution of marriage through personal fidelity to my spouse and respect for the marital bonds of others.” During a conference call last month for supporters of the Religious Right, Gingrich--whose marital history includes three marriages and an acknowledged record of infidelity--compared marriage equality to paganism: “It's pretty simple: marriage is between a man and a woman. This is a historic doctrine driven deep into the Bible, both in the Old Testament and in the New Testament, and it's a perfect example of what I mean by the rise of paganism. The effort to create alternatives to marriage between a man and a woman are perfectly natural pagan behaviors, but they are a fundamental violation of our civilization.” In August 2005, Romney—then Governor of Massachusetts—told MSNBC’s Chris Matthews with regards to marriage equality in his state, “I hope that people will be able to decide that neither civil union, nor same-sex marriage is legal in Massachusetts.” Fast forward six years to August 2011, when Romney intoned during the Iowa Republican debate “I believe we should have a federal amendment in the constitution that defines marriage as a relationship between a man and woman.” Just before the Florida primary, officers of the Log Cabin Republicans held a caucus in which Romney beat Gingrich by a vote of 26 to 4.
The group’s Cooper noted that Florida has come long way since Broward County passed its Human Rights contentious Ordinance in 1995, which extends to persons, based on their sexual orientation, protection from discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations. “Overall, the general populous in the Sunshine State has become increasingly supportive of gay-rights related positions such as employment nondiscrimination and the freedom to marry," Cooper said. "Any candidate attempting to use gays as a dividing rod in the 2012 election is bucking public trends of inclusion and will find themselves unable to win a general election. Politics is about addition and the long term gains are made through building coalitions, not employing wedge issues," Cooper noted. For his part, Romney continues to try and navigate the treacherous political waters between espousing fairness and equal protection for LGBT Americans, while not alienating “values” voters who turn out disproportionately during primary season, and who clearly turned out for Santorum in Colorado, Minnesota, and Missouri. while governor of that Massachusetts he appointed an openly-gay member to his cabinet as well as gay judges. He qualified his progressive executive model, adding that "at the same time, from the very beginning in 1994, I said to the gay community, I do not favor same-sex marriage. I oppose same-sex marriage and that has been my view." Then Romney seemingly qualified his qualifier: "If people are looking for someone who will discriminate against gays or will in any way try and suggest that people--that have different sexual orientation don't have full rights in this country, they won't find that in me." The debate’s moderator asked Romney, "When was the last time you stood up and spoke out for increasing gay rights?" The candidate replied, "Right now," although he did not list any particulars. This same Romney announced last week after California’s Proposition 8 ruling that, “Today, unelected judges cast aside the will of the people of California who voted to protect traditional marriage. This decision does not end this fight.” H

Romney’s Balancing Act I know what kind week Mitt of Romney has had. The former more-or-less unquestioned GOP nominee began last weekend offering nervous conservatives assurances that he has what it to takes to be the heir to Ronald Reagan. In a similar fashion, I spent last week trying to be an honest broker and explain to friends, gay and straight, why Romney isn’t exactly bad for “the gays,” but lacks the testicular fortitude to tout his true feelings to his gay supporters, and so sucks up to our political enemies. In this, he resembles in some ways his hoped-for opponent, President Obama. "My family, my faith, my businesses-- I know conservatism because I have lived conservatism," the candidate told delegates last Friday at the Conservative Political Action Conference (C-PAC) in Washington, DC. The former Massachusetts governor told the thousands assembled that, "I understand the battles we conservatives must fight because I have been on the front lines." Romney called on the delegates to stand “shoulder to shoulder” with his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination and ultimate victory over President Barack Obama in November. I sympathize with Romney in a way I sympathized with the now-defunct candidacy of his distant cousin and GOP rival Jon Huntsman, who was also not a “red meat” baiter of the far right fringe (who vote in droves during primary season and who have taken turns playing footsie first with fellow candidate Newt Gingrich, and then Rick Santorum). Unlike Huntsman, who never engaged in the politics of hate speech, Romney is forced to give lip-service to bigots (who would despise his Harvard education if they knew he possessed it) in a language
Letters Dear Editor:
Last week, Romney’s campaign took it on the chin after the candidate lost a triple crown of primary races to challenger Rick Santorum. The former Pennsylvania senator won first-place in Republican caucuses in Colorado and Minnesota and a non-binding primary in Missouri. Of the remaining contenders, Santorum, who has compared “consensual sex within your home” to “bigamy” and “incest,” has positioned himself as the guardian of the GOP social conservative wing’s agenda. Romney refuses to concede the right side of the playing field. “I was a severely conservative Republican governor,” Romney argued. Severely conservative? I thought that being conservative, like being pregnant, is a binary state: you either are or you aren’t. On Friday, Romney told the C-PAC delegates that he is a non-Washington outsider. “I am the only candidate in this race, Republican or Democrat, who has never worked a day in Washington,” he said. “I don’t have old scores to settle or decades of cloakroom deals that I have to defend.”
RE: Kress - Fighting Cancer With Food I wanted to share my appreciation for the nutrition column written by Andy Kress in a recent edition of Florida Agenda. It covered the topic of fighting cancer through diet. Several months ago, I was diagnosed with cancer of the bladder, and while my condition was successfully treated surgically, I have had my eyes opened by the information in the Kress column.
No only did Mr. Kress explain that we could alter the progress of disease through the foods and minerals we consume, he suggested that the disease itself might be a by-product of our fast food mentality and crappy
diets. I had to admit that I was guilty as charged in not paying attention to the kinds of foods that I was eating. My weight was out of control right along with my portion size and fatty food content. It is not only possible, but also highly likely, that my cancer was diet related. From this point forward, thanks to Mr. Kress, every morsel I put in my mouth is going to be helping my body heal itself. As the editor of Florida Agenda, I wanted you to know that this sort of information is valuable and utilized.

that dishonors that Ivy League foundation for his political leadership. I likewise blame “insider” Ron Paul for lacking the honesty to call his bigotry what it is. I admire his libertarian assertion that all citizens should be entitled to the same rights and benefits, while at the same time I despise his cowardly use of DOMA to Keep Gays Out of federal recognition, while he weakly invokes states-rights as his excuse. Although Romney took shots at the current administration’s perceived record ["If we lead with conviction and integrity, then history will record the Obama presidency as the last gasp of liberalism's great failure and a turning point for the conservative era to come"], he did not note his own diversity of opinions on social issues, notably gay marriage. On Friday, the candidate touted his opposition to marriage equality while he was in the Massachusetts state house: “I successfully prohibited out-of-state couples from coming to our state to get married and then going home. On my watch, we fought hard and prevented Massachusetts from becoming the Las Vegas of gay marriage.” Oh for the Mitt Romney who challenged then-Sen. Ted Kennedy in 1994 to become one of those “insiders” who “[work every] day in Washington.” That Romney, who was 18 years away from throwing LGBT Americans under the Gingrich-Santorum bus, wrapped himself in a big-oldrainbow and announced “I am more convinced than ever before that as we seek to establish full equality for America’s gay and lesbian citizens, I will provide more effective leadership than my opponent.” It is a long way to November, and it remains to be seen if Obama is a oneterm president or finishes the job he began for LGBT Americans with DADT and federal employee partner rights. A lot of politicians, Obama and Romney among them, agonize publicly over their policy positions and send the occasional “wink” to supporters they dare not address less obliquely. Romney may turn into the kind of “effective leader” that LGBT Americans need. But I wish that he was sending more winks to us than to Fred Phelps. H

Didn’t We Almost Have It All The Ride with Whitney was Worth the Fall By Jarrett terrill “Little white boys in Indiana don’t sing Whitney Houston songs… They play kickball.” That is something I likely heard in the 3rd grade when one of my all time favorite celebrities landed on my radar with the insanely bubbly (and GAY) video for “How Will I Know.” How would I know, indeed. Over the years, Houston would fade in and out of the present tense until just this last Saturday night where she burst full throttle into the omni-present tense and onto the tip of everyone’s tongue. It was heartbreaking to say the very least – soul crushing, in fact.
I won’t antagonize her during this long awaited and well-deserved restful sleep with my opinions about her personal decisions and recreational activities. Those are concepts for the living to struggle with. What I will address is the enduring spirit, which has been released, phoenix-like, from the heavy bondage of public opinion and crass tabloid journalism. Don’t expect Whitney Houston to get the “Michael Jackson treatment” much longer in today’s media. She’s no mystery to most of us. She’s every woman. Like most Americans, Whitney had financial problems. Related to those, she had family problems. Beyond her struggles with independence from her parents and her feisty rebellious marriage to Bobby Brown was an uphill battle with addiction that would end in a kind of truce with Whitney waving a white flag. None of these descriptors should have been shameful to the songstress who was admittedly a “Queen of the Night.” Neither should they shame the countless other Americans who struggle with the exact same problems even in broad daylight. Sadly, Whitney DID feel deep shame. I could see it on her face. I wanted to burst into Whitney’s living room and save her from the wrath of Diane Sawyer on that fateful December evening in 2002 when she was being interrogated, not interviewed. Since that point, the very concept of a “celebrity interview” has changed. Certainly, Houston herself never rebounded after Sawyer’s awkwardly aggressive profile. Even in 2010, Caroline Sullivan wrote in the UK’s Guardian newspaper that the media, “[most] of whom were not even there,” were blindly trashing Houston’s UK tour as “the worst thing they’d ever seen.” Celebrities are now easy prey for sensationalist reporters and counterintuitively, our politicians are given the
Sony (Almost) Cashes in on Singer’s Death Party Doesn’t Stop for Whitney’s Colleagues In what is being viewed as a major PR gaff and money grab, Sony Music has officially apologized for raising the price on two Whitney Houston albums during the first hour after the legendary singer’s death. Calling the price hike “unintentional,” the label issued a statement saying, "Whitney Houston product was mistakenly mispriced on the U.K. iTunes store on Sunday. When discovered, the mistake was immediately corrected. We apologize for any offense caused." By coincidence—or maybe not-- the two albums struck by the pricing mishap,
Ultimate Collection and Greatest Hits, were Houston's compilation discs, the two most likely to be purchased by nostalgic or mourning fans. Ultimate Collection jumped 60 percent above its regular list price (from $7.85 to $12.50), while the Greatest Hits album saw a 25 percent increase in its cost (from $12.50 to $15.67). The record company was already under fire for “insensitivity” over the fact that its Chief Creative Officer, Clive Davis, went ahead with his planned preGrammy party at the Beverly Hilton
benefit of the doubt. There was a time, during the George H.W. Bush Administration, where this would not have happened to Houston. Whitney Houston brought our nation together with a performance of our National Anthem (during the Persian Gulf war). It likely still brings tears to the eyes of many who remember the performance itself, as well as to those who associate it with September 11th 2001--since it was re-released afterward and Houston donated 100% of her royalties to first responders, victims and their families. Fast forward to a few wars later and Houston was once again used to rally everyone under a common cause: distraction. Houston tried her best to roll with the punches and aside from drugs, she took solace in new clothes, new hair and new friendships. She and George Michael made a quirky yet classy video together, set in a dark nightclub. It wasn’t exactly the biggest hit but it was a fun little tongue-incheek track that marked the beginning of the new Whitney. The Whitney who let it all hang out. Human Whitney. The Whitney Houston who lay under water in the bathtub of her suite at the final hour before Grammy Night was the Whitney who would probably have been further humiliated and taunted by the press, her family, her husband and her own inability to be what everyone expected of her. Jennifer Hudson, who is now also far more familiar with pain and humanity than she would like to be, graciously gave this particular Whitney a befitting farewell at the Grammy’s with her own performance of “I will Always Love You.” The other Whitney – the Whitney who laughs, fights, sings and knows how to have a good time is still with us. This is the Whitney that gave Bobby Brown some semblance of sex appeal (he’s still not right but it’s ok). She’s not perfect but she’s damn close --with the Billboard top selling single of all time, praise and accolades from other superstars across the spectrum (Dolly Parton, Smokey Robinson, Simon Cowell), at least a whole page of her own in every karaoke book from here to Tokyo, and near constant rotation with DJ’s throughout gay clubland. I love the Whitney she left in our care. She’s messy and aggressive but she’s also inspiring and legendary. She may

Hotel, site of Huston’s demise, mere hours after her death. Davis is expected to attend the singer’s funeral, to take place in Newark, New Jersey on Saturday at the New Hope Baptist Church, where the icon first performed as a child. While Houston’s ex-husband, singer Bobby Brown, has been reportedly banned from attending the funeral, a roster of other celebrities are said to be among the guest list of 1,500 who will attend. Among them: gospel singer Marvin Winans (who will give the eulogy), Houston’s godmother Aretha Franklin (who will perform), Houston’s cousin, singer Dionne Warwick, singer Chaka Khan, and the Rev. Your idea of happiness.
Candidly:
Reece Darham During the 19th and early-20th Centuries, intellectuals and community leaders shared their ideas and thoughts in the form of a parlor game that spoke, truthfully, about the innermost them. This week, we speak CANDIDLY with Rainbow Business Coalition (RBC) chair and Island City Health and Fitness managing director Reece Darham:
Your favorite qualities in a person.
My closest friends are my family, and just like with family, I know there is mutual loyalty, respect, compassion, and “Come-to-Jesus” moments that we all need to experience in life.
Petty gossip. I find it’s the miserable people who have the most of it, and they love to share it! Uurgg!
Another person you would be if not yourself.
Somewhere you’d like to live. As much as I love Fort Lauderdale, there is a piece of me that yearns for Africa. I’ll always keep a home there, and would like to go back to living at least three months a year in Cape Town. Nkosi sikelel’ iAfrika!
Your chief characteristic.
What you appreciate most in your friends.
Your idea of misery.
Either of my parents. They are incredible people (and they have a fabulous son).
Honesty! I really appreciate it when one says what’s actually on one’s mind. No mincing of words, just plain old, in-your-face-here-it-is: the truth. It does tend to get me in trouble from time-to-time, though. I’m a matter-of-fact kind of person who likes to cut the crap and get down to the issues at hand. I love to problem solve (and make people happy, too).
Being on safari surrounded by a herd of 200+ elephants, knowing that any moment I could be toast. That exhilaration and angst is incredibly humbling and spiritual; it impacts my soul!
Your main fault.
Your heroes in real life.
Where do I begin? I guess I could learn to use my mouth better--wait! (Don’t get ahead of yourself.) I mean that I have the remarkable ability to insert my own foot into my mouth on a regular basis. I need to learn to just shut up at times, or at least be gentler with my words.
Take Aung San Suu Kyi, for example: what an incredible inspiration for leading his people to democracy in Myanmar even though under house arrest for so many years. Another true hero is Nelson Mandela, who led a nation through such turmoil and political and social change without letting the country spin into

civil unrest. These precious people are heroes.
Your favorite food and drink. Cheese and wine, say no more!
Your favorite names. Poops, Boobee, and Darhling! LOL! I seem to use them often…unless I don’t remember your name, and then there’s a good chance I’ll call you “Trouble.” (“Hey, Trouble, how’s it going?” Sound familiar?)
The natural talent you'd like to be gifted with. I really wish I could sing!
How you wish to die. Quickly and painlessly. And I want my ashes spread over the Timbavati (in Limpopo province, South Africa).
Present state of mind. Here!
A fault you can’t tolerate. Lying! Don’t freakin’ lie to me--just don’t! I’ll call you out on it every time. Fortunately, the truth always comes out in the end, so why bother lying? I told you my mouth gets me into trouble.
Your personal motto. We all make mistakes. Geez, I make them every day! But, it’s not about the mistake: it’s about what we do to correct it! H

Gay and lesbian voters should be very happy that Mitt Romney won the Sunshine State’s Republican presidential primary last month. The results showed that Florida Republicans care more about liberating our economy than shackling our community. By choosing a pro-growth businessman over a social conservative, Floridians chose to look forward rather than backward. I don't think that gay and lesbian voters have much to cheer about in any of the Republican candidates. Romney may be considered "Republican Light" in some circles, but we both know that he recently went on a tirade about Obama's so-called "assault on marriage and religion," so let's not pretend that he will fall on the right (our "right") side of that particular issue at the end of the day.

Political activists don’t complain about polls unless they are behind in those polls’ numbers. When you hear, “the only poll that matters is the one on Election Day,” for example, you can bet your bottom dollar that person’s cause is grasping at straws. But if you don’t trust polls, which is a legitimate position to take, then trust your gut. President Obama won Florida with 51% of the vote. Since 2008, do you think he has earned or lost support? Yeah, that’s what I thought, too. I’m a multicultural kind of guy—and I realize that Florida’s Hispanic voters, mainly Cuban Americans, have always had a good number of Republicans in their midst. This year might be different, though, as Republicans like Arizona's Jan Brewer, Donald Trump, and other "birthers," "ID'ers," and genuine racists have clearly indicated that not everyone is "American, First" in their eyes. Romney is perhaps even worse when it comes to race issues. When you belong to a church that did not let a black person through the front door until the late 1970s, you've got big race-relation problems. At least with Obama, Hispanic women are now represented in our highest court and gays can openly serve in their country’s armed forces with pride and dignity.
Speaking of Barack Obama, Florida voters look forward to electing a new president. Erosion of support among youth and the elderly alike, not to mention Jews and Hispanics, will cost the president come November. With Obama’s approval ratings below 50 percent, the president is in real political trouble in the Sunshine State. Like liberals always say, demographics are destiny.
Left wing charges of “bigotry” neglect certain inconvenient truths. For starters, the reason gays can serve their country is that a growing bipartisan consensus says they should. For the LGBT community, marriage equality is rightfully the mother of all culture wars. I take great pride pointing out that both of the attorneys who argued Bush v. Gore in 2000, teamed up in bipartisan support for equality. Liberals pummel conservatives as bigots on the issue, ignoring their own elephant in the room. Putting politics above principle, Obama lacks the fortitude to speak up for marriage before the election. So I challenge any left-wing activist to come out from behind their 2012 rainbow sign and riddle me this: how does Obama’s position on marriage differ from Mitt Romney’s, again?
Speaking on behalf of all “liberals [who] always say" that—come to think of it, when do we say that? This particular liberal does not think that approval ratings polls are worth the paper they're printed on. Personally, I have never been selected by such a poll for my opinion-I don't own a landline telephone--so therein is your flaw.
I agree that Obama could stand to "gay up" his rhetoric on marriage, but certainly not before the election. That would just firebrand the opponents. Regardless of Mitt Romney’s recent antigay marriage revelation, experience tells me that he would sign any bill that Congress brings him, no matter how objectionable.

Cross-Eyed
“Click, Boing, Beep” by A.J. CROSS I am sure that you’ve heard the sound of the familiar click, boing or beep if you’ve participated in any of the several cellular chat sites such as the very popular “Grindr” app. There is something addictive about being able to not only look at pictures of hot guys while at your local coffee shop, school, or even while waiting in traffic, but also to be able to see how close to you in proximity that sexy boy is. Of course, there is always the possibility of instant gratification through the form of an anonymous hook up, but many guys use these sites for social networking, making new friends, or finding old ones. I have imagined being pulled over by a State Trooper, and then having my phone “click,” “boing,” or “beep” to let me know that someone else using the app is just a few feet away. I think that I would definitely find a way out of that ticket! But there is a flip side to all of this: the possibility of rejection. Believe me, rejection online is just as painful as it is in real life. You can be blocked, or receive messages that read “ewww,” “gross,” “no thanks,” etc. The three leading emphases--position preference, physical endowment, and age--may very well end a conversation before it begins. I’m a novice to this and am still learning how to navigate some of the sites, but I was very interested in this form of socializing--not to mention the entertainment I got in doing the research for this column. For those of you willing to give it a try, here’s my advice. 1) Put up a face picture unless you are running for Congress, because you will not get anywhere fast without one. 2) Make sure your pictures are relevant and recent, especially if you intend to meet someone. (It will be hard to explain that your belly grew so big overnight, or that your hair fell out
on the morning when you meet face to face, especially after you just sent a picture of you from 1980.) People bend the truth. I know that I did. I decided that since I look around eight years younger than I really am, I would list the age that I appear. Why? Because when I listed my real age, people were quick to discount me before they even talked to me. Many profiles will read “under 30 ONLY,” as if
there are no attractive men over the age of 30. A lot of black guys put “mixed” or “other” for race in their profiles so that when people filter out “black,” their profiles will still appear. According to a source at “Grindr,” the three most filtered criteria in order are “age,” “ethnicity,” and “weight.” I have yet to determine whether or not these mobile sites are designed to bring people closer or to keep them further apart; to unite or to segregate. What I do know is that just as the secret behind Facebook was to ensure that the user becomes “addicted,” there is definitely something addicting about these types of social sites. My final word on all this is to take it for what it is. Be real, keep your expectations realistic, and just have fun. Okay, I have to go: I just got a “boing.” H

SUPPLEMENTS:
Are You Getting What You Need Out of Them? By ANDY KRESS
M
any Americans take supplements to aid in their diets—usually without the benefit of a doctor’s recommendation. Listen to the commercials and you can understand why. According to the ads, the average diet does not supply adequate nutrients. Swallow your nutrition in the form of a pill once a day, and good health will be yours. Or better still some think, take two or three or five. After all, if a little is good for you, then a lot must be better. If blood tests confirm that you are deficient in certain vitamins or minerals, consult with your physician to discuss how to correct the situation. Make the call on your own with selfdiagnosis, and risk doing more harm than good. It is your liver and kidneys that must correct your mistakes filtering out all the extras the body cannot store or utilize immediately. Overwhelm these organs with excess vitamins and minerals and you can expect to become familiar with the symptoms of hypervitaminosis—a toxic condition that can lead to severe health issues. The easiest vitamins to over-consume are those that are fat soluble—Vitamins A, D, E and K. Elevated doses of vitamin A can cause
liver damage, skin problems, fatigue and other harsh symptoms. Vitamin D when taken in high doses produces calcium deposits on the heart and blood vessels; it also upsets calcium metabolism leading to bone loss. Symptoms of Vitamin E overdose include nausea, abdominal pain and fatigue. Take too much Vitamin K and risk blood clots and jaundice. Compounding the problem, as the liver and kidneys work overtime to correct the situation, they mistakenly strip other vital nutrients from the body in the process. The good news is that in the vast majority of cases, the easiest way to receive your nutrients and vitamins while improving your overall health is to eat a varied diet that coincides with the food pyramid or the newer MyPlate diagram, developed by the Department of Agriculture. These charts illustrate the proper mix of fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy and protein. Notice, there is no spot here for supplements, because none
should be needed. In a varied diet, the body receives all of its needs for vitamins and minerals through its nutrition. Any nutritionist will tell you that diet is the best source for fatty and amino acids, fiber, vitamins and minerals. While many supplements provide one nutritional benefit and lack others, eating the same dietary compound from a natural food source will provide additional energy, fiber and other components for nutritional balance. Some of the most popular supplements also inhibit or delay the absorption of others nutrients due to the chemical additives and fillers used in these products. The chemicals fillers are highly foreign to the human digestive system compared to natural foods and take days--and even weeks--to process. Vitamin C supplements are the major culprit here. Supplements can also have adverse affects on medication and vice versa. Raise the red flag if you are taking oral contraceptives, blood
pressure medication, laxatives, antibiotics, and some over-the-counter painkillers. Should you fall into the category of “moderate or heavy drinker,” you are the exception to the supplementation rule. Alcoholics and heavy drinkers require supplementation to overcome the deleterious effects from a poor diet and nutritional drain over a prolonged period of time. The overconsumption of alcohol affects the body’s abilities to absorb nutrients and places the liver under more stress, leading to liver disorders. As always, we leave the choice up to you. By knowing the facts about supplements, you discover that there is more of a science to proper diet than just popping a few pills in the morning. Choose correctly and it’s a win-win. Choose incorrectly and you could lose your life. Please read the labels and choose wisely. H

ARTIST STEVE WALKER PASSES
ONE AFTERNOON IN THE TROPICS
Iconic Gay Artist Leaves Legacy of Beauty
A New Twist for an Old Friend
By BOB KECSKEMETY
By RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN
I
nternationally- renowned gay artist Steve Walker passed away unexpectedly at his home in Costa Rica on Jan. 4. The news of Walker’s death was released in a written statement by his estate last weekend. No cause of death was included in the written statement by representatives of his estate in Canada. The work of the artist, who was only 50 when he died, is immediately recognizable by both seasoned art lovers and novices alike, and some of them were painted in South Florida. Most of the Ottawanative’s work depicts men interacting with each other or with nature. Fort Lauderdale Beach, including the famed Wave Wall, served as the setting for several of his pieces. Art consumed much of Walker’s earliest childhood: friends say that he started drawing at the age of three or four. A selftaught artist, Walker began painting after a trip to Europe when he was 25. He spent much of that time in Europe touring the great galleries and museums. It was the first time he was exposed to great painting, and the first time he recognized the potential power of the art form. “I was moved by something that I was capable of doing,” Walker would later recall. His first paintings were done in a somewhat secretive way, as he had no intention of exhibiting or selling them and had no aspirations to becoming a professional artist. The universal themes he depicted were done without respect to race, gender, socio-economic class, culture, or sexual orientation. However, his work is unique because he conveys these themes through the subjects in his paintings: young gay men. “Remove the gender of the painting’s subjects and what we have is human relationships in general, and one’s relationship to the world itself,” Walker explained. The focus of his paintings often depicted
sadness and loneliness, to reflect the reality that much of life is sad and lonely. Walker often portrayed people in relationships as separate entities; that is the way he viewed them. He also used a small and consistent palette of colors with which he was comfortable and which became associated with his signature style. “We started carrying his originals about one-and-a-half years ago,” said Tommy LaFashia, the owner of Gallery XO and himself an artist. Gallery XO is the exclusive Broward County gallery for Walker’s original artwork. “About four weeks ago, we got a call at about seven one morning from the person who handles Steve’s artwork, telling me that he passed away. He has a sister who is acting as executor and is taking care of the estate and creating a foundation in Steve’s name. They want to make sure they preserve Steve’s legacy and keep his artwork out there.” LaFashia explained that the estate initially wanted to keep Walker’s death secret until arrangements could be made, and an inventory of his work taken. “We have four original works at the gallery,” said LaFashia. “We were told by the estate they are not to be sold until [the estate] gets everything together and they can talk to all the galleries. The original artwork will be available at some point, but I’m not sure when that will be.” Walker’s original pieces at Gallery XO are titled “Platano y Pipa,” “Sculpture Series No. 1,” “Two Umbrellas,” and “Vintage Twilight.” LaFashia said that he expects the estate to raise the prices on Walker’s artwork, and that the original works will carry a premium price. Walker is survived by his parents, Gloria and Gilbert Walker, his brother, Kevin, and sister, Marjorie. Another brother, Bruce, predeceased him. H

s the song lyric goes, you never lose affection for people and things that went before. And you hope that in some instances, that affection grows with time and experiences. That is what springs to mind after a recent Sunday brunch at the new Tropics on Wilton Drive, now owned and operated by Tony Dee and Charlie Mielke, the same successful entrepreneur-restaurateurs who captained the long-unparalleled Chardee’s on Wilton Drive. To observe the omnipresent Dee and Mielke in their new venture, the signature Drive bistro, Tropics, is to see two men who have been eager to drop the word “semi” from the phrase semiretired. Individually and in-tandem, they are more akin in energy and élan to a pair of newly-minted tavernières than the successful team who helmed Wilton Manors long-reigning jewel, Chardee’s, which opened in 1990. While Dee greets guests and presses the flesh with friends new and old at the restaurant’s front tables, Mielke takes a moment to adjust his chef’s smock and explain without irony what the secret is to their success this time around. “I say this with all humility,” Mielke noted while he ascertained if my boyfriend was enjoying the red velvet cake--his second piece, “that in over 50 years of being in business, I have never worked with a team like the one we inherited. They are truly what is meant by the phrase ‘cooking with the right ingredients.’” That team was in rare form on that Sunday morning of Super Bowl. When we arrived just after 11 a.m., the dining room was already a-buzz, with guests enjoying conversation along with a generous side of coffee, mimosas, bloody Marys, and screwdrivers. The restaurant’s signature Sunday brunch ($16.95)
includes your choice of two free adult cocktails. However, we were feeling that the calories were best invested at the buffet tables, and so I nursed one vodkaOJ while he managed his caffeine intake. Both of us did avail ourselves of SundayMorning-Hydration, and our ever-present server, Paulo, was always ready with a refill on the H2O. After navigating our way through the breakfast lasagna and baked French toast, which both warranted multiple trips, we each returned, bounty in hand. Our plates included equal measures of spinach quiche, biscuits and gravy, Eggs Benedict, roast beef (freshly sliced from the neighboring carving station), link sausages, fruit cups, bacon strips, and omelets the size of footballs and prepared to-order (then delivered to you, on top of that). As we ate our way through a variety of great twists on old faves (French toast that comes deliciously disguised in the consistency of bread pudding!), my bf pointed out the room looked brighter and more welcoming. Dee slid in to join us, and added that the restaurant is open for business during alterations, and that his decorating crews have enhanced the room with brighter, lighter colors, and by letting in the natural lighting. In addition, they have added weekly specials to reward their existing guests and to welcome those who want to see what Tropics looks like with a little shade of Dee and Mielke magic thrown in. As regular patron John Ellis and his partner came over to say hello to Dee and us, my boyfriend mumbled something about overindulging his “inner Kristie Alley.” Meanwhile, Dee insisted I enjoy another piece of red velvet cake— and I do mean insisted. One doesn’t say no to the Dean of the Drive. We will be coming back. H

RECIPE
THIS WEEK’S TASTY RECIPE: Chicken Pot Pie Cocotte By JEAN DOHERTY
• • • • • • • •
3 chicken breasts, cooked and diced Knob of butter 1 tb spoon flour 1 small onion chopped A good pinch of black pepper 1 cup chicken broth ½ cup milk 12 ounces frozen mixed peas and carrots or sliced mushrooms • 2 refrigerated pie crusts (I prefer to use puff pastry)
Preheat your oven to 425 degrees. Take out the pie crusts so they’ll come to room temperature. In a saucepan, simmer butter and onion until soft. Stir in flour and pepper, and cook until bubbly. Slowly stir in broth and milk, a little at a time. Heat to boil, stirring constantly. Boil
`
one minute. Congratulations! You have just made a bechamel sauce. Add the chicken, and the veggies. Unroll the pie crusts using the lid of your cocotte. Cut around it with a paring knife. Spoon the chicken filling into the little cocottes. Place the pastry on top of each one, making sure to make a few holes with your knife so it’ll breath. Bake for approx 20 minutes. Serve with a salad of your choice. You are the chef! H
