Among 2011’s reported suicides, in August, a man with a reported history of mental illness, 44, shot himself; a gay man, 40, hanged himself in October following a romantic breakup; and a married man and father, 52, killed himself by stepping in front of a train: the man had reportedly been conflicted about his sexual identity. “Gay people are still devalued and marginalized by our society,” offered Arlen Leight, Ph.D., a Wilton Manors-based clinical psychologist. “More than internalized homophobia, there is an internalized heterosexism that is a part of all of us who have ‘SUICIDE TOO COMMON’ continues on Page 9

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - The top members of the House Republican leadership have filed an appeal with the full U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, based in San Francisco, to overturn the decision of a lower court that declared the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the 1996 law prohibiting the federal government from recognizing gay marriages, to be unconstitutional. On Friday, Feb. 24, attorneys for the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group notified the lower court that they are requesting a review by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals of a ruling

made last week by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White. In that decision, White told the federal Office of Personnel Management that it could not use

DOMA to deny medical coverage to a gay attorney who had enrolled her wife in a family health insurance plan. Last year, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) appointed the fivemember advisory group to defend DOMA against legal challenges. This came after Attorney General Eric Holder, Jr. said that Justice Department would no longer defend the law in court because the President Barack Obama had announced that it violates the civil rights of LGBT Americans. Wasserman Schultz Gets Marriage Equality “Love” from Grindr App Users WILTON MANORS, FL – Florida Rep.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Wilton Manors) should expect to start receiving petitions from an unusual constituency: users of the gay hookup app Grindr. The Courage Campaign, a

California-based LGBT rights group, announced last week that they have partnered with the developers of the gay-oriented smartphone app in an effort to lobby the Democratic National Committee (DNC), which Wasserman Schultz chairs, to fund marriage equality efforts during this year’s elections cycle. In a statement, the Courage Campaign described Grindr as “the world’s largest all-male social network.” According to the company, more than 3 million people have downloaded the app. The Grindr campaign will entail the company sending messages to people who have downloaded the app, requesting them to sign a petition in favor of DNC support for same-sex marriage initiatives. The petition will then be sent to DNC Chairwoman Wasserman Schultz, whose 20th Congressional District includes parts of Broward and Miami-Dade counties. “There’s a social dating site for really every kind of person and flavor,” said Adam Bink, director of online programs for the Courage Campaign, of the petition, which is called “Grindr for Equality.” “We really have to reach people where they are,” he added. Bink noted that Grindr is just the latest in a long line of dating sites and software, including straight dating site OkCupid, and JDate, for Jewish singles. Straight people might have a physical relationship after meeting on those sites, Bink said. Grindr previously encouraged its members to support the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), as

Tampa May Allow Domestic Partners TAMPA, FL – Taking a cue from recent decisions by Orlando’s city government and the mayor of Orange County to establish domestic partner registries, Tampa may become the next Florida city to allow unmarried couples to register as domestic partners. Last week, Tampa City Councilwoman Yvonne Capin proposed a registry to include both straight and gay couples. “We want to move into the 21st century,” Capin told reporters following last week’s council meeting. “This is the way people live today.” The councilwoman says that a domestic partner registry is in step with the values and needs of a modern society. “It's not illegal to cohabitate,” Capin pointed out. “So we need to accommodate those people. And there are some people that can't get married.” Capin’s proposal is based upon the ordinance that took effect in January in Orlando. A similar plan is expected to be implemented across Orange County with the backing of Mayor Teresa Jacobs, who lent her support to such a measure last week after several months of public soul-searching on the issue. Orlando’s domestic partner registry permits domestic partners to visit each other in the hospital, make health care decisions for one another, make funeral and burial arrangements for one another, be considered each other's next of kin for the official purposes of police and other first responders, designate one another as caretaker in the event of incapacitation, and participate in school activities as parents of their shared children. “Nothing in this ordinance shall be construed as recognizing or treating a domestic partnership as a marriage,” the ordinance reads. Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn said he is in favor of creating a domestic

partnership registry. “Giving folks who are unmarried but in a relationship the right to be there at a critical time for their partner is humane and absolutely defensible,” Buckhorn stated. Since 2005, Tampa has extended insurance benefits to the domestic partners of city employees. A similar measure was rejected by the rest of Hillsborough County in 2009. Capin's proposal would call for people who register as domestic partners to receive a card which instructs first responders whom to call in case of an emergency. Domestic partnerships would be tracked by a database maintained by the city. Census data indicates that Tampa has over 9,000 unmarried-partner households. Less than 10 percent are same-sex couples. NATIONAL NEWS IN BRIEF

MD: Marriage Equality Bill Sent to Governor ANNAPOLIS, MD – On Thursday, Feb. 23, Maryland Senators voted 25 to 22 to legalize gay marriage, less than a week after the state’s House of Delegates passed the measure by a razor-thin 72-to-67 vote. The bill now goes to Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley for his signature, at which time the Bay State will become the eighth state to allow same-sex marriage. Opponents plan to collect the more than 55,000 signatures they need to place the referendum to repeal on the November ballot. The measure has had a bumpy ride, and in its final form had to be amended to take effect on Jan. 1, 2013, in order to allow time for the referendum process. Maryland is a heavily Democratic state, but the party is divided over marriage equality. Supporters of the measure in the House of Delegates required the votes of two Republicans, three conservative Democrats, and two African-American members, none of whom initially supported the bill. Some of the delegates said their support came after language was added protecting religious institutions from compulsory compliance. “People believe that it’s a sin for a homosexual to be married, but who are they to judge?” said Delegate Robert Costa, one of the Republicans who voted in favor. “It’s up to God, not government.” A Jan. 30 Washington Post poll found that 50 percent of Marylanders support allowing same-sex marriage, and 44 percent are opposed. Gay Marriage Supporters Collect Signatures for Ballot Initiative AUGUSTA, ME – Marriage equality supporters have gathered more than the required signatures to put same-sex marriage to a vote in November, three years after voters banned it. Maine lawmakers legalized gay marriage in 2009, but a statewide referendum that year overturned marriage equality by 53 percent to 47 percent. Proponents say the nationwide tide of public acceptance has shifted cultural attitudes in the past three years, and that polls show they would win a statewide vote by as much as 10 percentage points. Maine Secretary of State Charles Summers said last Thursday that advocates had gathered

MARCH 01, 2012

over 85,000 signatures, far more than the required 57,277. Opponents have 10 days to challenge the signatures. No U.S. state has ever approved marriage equality in a referendum. "It's going to be challenging," David Farmer with Equality Maine told Reuters last week. "We've been working hard since 2009. We've spoken to 40,000 people one-on-one to change their minds and we believe those efforts will pay off," Farmer offered optimistically. Maine is one of a number of battleground states this year for national groups supporting and opposing marriage equality. This year, voters in Minnesota and North Carolina will consider constitutional amendments to ban same-sex marriage. A federal appeals court has upheld a lower court decision that could compel the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) to disclose the names of donors who helped finance the $1.8 million effort in 2009 to overturn the law. The Washington, DC-based group opposes marriage equality. “NOM intends to vigorously fight this attempt by same-sex marriage advocates to impose gay marriage in Maine,” Brian Brown, NOM’s president, recent stated. “Maine voters rejected gay marriage barely more than two years ago. What part of ‘no’ don’t gay marriage advocates understand?” H

Minnesota School Super Apologizes for Remarks on Bullying and Suicides COON RAPIDS, MN – Dennis Carlson,

the Superintendent of the AnokaHennepin School District, apologized last week to those who were offended by statements he made in 2010 concerning a series of student suicides which occurred during his tenure. Over a two year period, authorities reported the suicides of six students who attended the Anoka-Hennepin School District, the largest in Minnesota. LGBT rights organizations, along with family members of the victims, drew a relationship between some of the suicides and episodes of bullying. In December 2010, Carlson said there was no evidence linking bullying to any of the suicides. On Feb. 21, Carlson clarified his comments in a statement posted on the district's website. He said the remarks were “widely quoted, misquoted and stated out of context.” His statement reads in part: ”I made the original statement for two reasons. In trying to gain an understanding of the student suicides, we had dozens of conversations with staff from multiple buildings. We brought in

professional help for grieving students and staff. During those conversations, we did not hear or receive evidence that bullying was the main reason for the suicide. We did hear of other causes – ongoing mental health issues, a break–up of a significant relationship, and other unique and difficult family issues. The second reason I made the statement was to encourage people to come forward if they did have evidence of bullying because we had heard the rumor that staff had witnessed it and done nothing. Four people originally came forward – two ultimately would not speak to us and the other two did not have evidence of bullying in the suicides. ”Although no one can ever be absolutely certain of the specific event that leads to a student's suicide, there can be no doubt that in many situations bullying is one of the contributing factors. Gay students are especially vulnerable to anti-gay bullying and so are other students that are unique in some way that leads to verbal attacks by students. These are often students with features or attributes that seem to make them a target. Students that have a visible disability, students that are overweight/underweight, very tall/small, gay or wearing non-conforming gender clothes, and students of color are often repeatedly targeted. I tell students as often as I can that they must speak up if we ever expect to end bullying in schools. We – the adults in school – know our role clearly is to foster an environment where students feel it’s safe to voice their concerns. ”I have learned a lot in this process, particularly from talking to some of the mothers of our students who died. If my December 2010 statement was perceived as dismissive or insensitive to victims of bullying or suicide, I deeply and sincerely apologize. I absolutely meant no disrespect to any of our students and the adults who care about them and love them.” H

Gay TX Judge Won’t Perform Weddings DALLAS, TX – An openly-gay Texas jurist refuses to perform legal marriages in her jurisdiction until samesex marriage is legal for all Lone Star State citizens. Dallas County Judge Tonya Parker says to do otherwise would be “oxymoronic.” Parker, who was elected in 2010 and is the first lesbian to be elected as a county judge in Dallas, said at the Feb. 21 meeting of Stonewall Democrats of Dallas: “I use it as my opportunity to give them a lesson about marriage inequality in this state

H

because I feel like I have to tell them why I’m turning them away.” Parker said that when she is asked to perform a wedding ceremony, she is apologetic. “I'm sorry,” she tells couples. “I don't perform marriage ceremonies because we are in a state that does not have marriage equality, and until it does, I am not going to partially apply the law to one group of people that doesn't apply to another group of people.” “It's kind of oxymoronic for me to perform ceremonies that can't be performed for me, so I’m not going to do it,” Parker added. “I do not perform [marriages] because it is not an equal application of the law. Period.” Parker said she passes marriage ceremonies on to other judges. In a statement last week, Parker clarified her position and her responsibilities to her jurisdiction. “I faithfully and fully perform all of my duties as the Presiding Judge of the 116th Civil District Court, where it is my honor to serve the citizens of Dallas County and the parties who have matters before the Court,” she wrote. “Performing marriage ceremonies is not a duty that I have as the Presiding Judge of a civil district court. It is a right and privilege invested in me under the Family Code. I choose not to exercise it, as many other Judges do not exercise it. Because it is not part of our duties, some Judges even charge a fee to perform the ceremonies. I do not, and would never, impede any person's right to get married.” H

Gingrich: Pro-Gay Laws Are Better Than Pro-Gay Court Rulings OLYMPIA, WA – Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich met with Washington State lawmakers last week and said that although that he personally disagrees with marriage equality, he believes that those states that have legalized it legislatively are “doing it the right way.” On Friday, Feb. 24, Gingrich, a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, met with legislators in the Evergreen State, where gay marriage was passed by lawmakers last month. Maryland’s Senate and House of Delegates also approved marriage equality last month. "I think at least they're doing it the right way, which is going through voters, giving them a chance to vote and not having a handful of judges arbitrarily impose their will,” Gingrich said of Washington State and Maryland lawmakers. “I don't agree with it. I would vote ‘no’ if it were on a referendum where I was, but at least they're doing it the right way." H

UK: Gay, Disabled, and Young Workers ‘suffer most bullying’ CARDIFF, WALES, UK – New research on workplace bullying in the United Kingdom finds that one-in-five employees report being shouted at by their employers, with gay and disabled workers among those citing the most harassment. The UK-wide research also found that 1.25 million British employees face violence at work. Researchers from Cardiff and Plymouth universities interviewed 4,000 workers as part of the four-year study of illtreatment in the workplace. The data showed that gay employees and

younger workers are more likely to be targeted by bullies. The results also indicated that employees with learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, or mental health issues are the most likely to suffer at the hands of managers and coworkers. More than one in five British workers report being shouted at while on the job, with respondents citing rude and disrespectful superiors as a common workplace feature, accounting for around 40 percent of these types of incident, and customers and co-workers making up nearly a third of reports. Astonishingly, 5 percent of employees--one in 20--report violence at the workplace. That number equates to roughly 1.25 million workers across the United Kingdom. Among employees who reported experiencing physical assault, 41 percent said it occurs “now and then,” 13 percent report experiencing violence at work on a daily basis. Researchers compared the results with the British Crime Survey, and found that violence is “a more regular feature of working life than has often been recognized.” H

On LGBT Rights, Mugabe tells Cameron “To Hell with You” MUTARE, ZIMBABWE – Zimbabwe's president finished up a week of events to mark his 88th birthday with advice to his country’s young people to disdain Western values like homosexuality. He also offered advice of a sort to British Prime Minister David Cameron: “To hell with you.” President Robert Mugabe, who last week turned 88, hosted a posh birthday party in the city of Mutare. He castigated other African leaders as being “weak and naïve” for “kneeling” to Western values. “Nature is nature,” Mugabe told a stadium crowd of 20,000 on Saturday. “It has created male and female. You, David Cameron, are you suggesting that you don't know that or is it some kind of insanity or part of the culture of Europeans? In their newspapers, that's one of my sins. That I called [gays] worse than pigs and dogs because pigs know there are males and females. It's even in the Bible that you create through the system of marrying. That's how we were born, so we reject that outright and say ‘to hell with you.’ I won't even call him a dog because my own dog will complain and say, ‘but what have I done.’” Mugabe’s rant came during a visit to neighboring Zambia by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, in which the secretary general

repeated his calls for African nations to respect LGBT rights. At last year’s (British) Commonwealth of Nations summit, Cameron said that nations which receive British foreign aid must respect all human rights, including gay rights. “Britain is one of the premier aid givers in the world,” the prime minister told the BBC. “We want to see countries that receive our aid adhering to proper human rights. We are saying that is one of the things that determine our aid policy, and there have been particularly bad examples where we have taken action.” Of the Commonwealth’s 54member nations, 41 of them have laws banning homosexuality. Many of the laws are a holdover from the days of the British Empire and the colonial era. (See “India Decriminalizes Gay Sex,” above.) The issue re-emerged recently as Zimbabwe—once known as the British self-governing colony of Southern Rhodesia--drafts a new national constitution. Much of the debate centers on

whether to follow neighboring South Africa’s lead and include LGBT rights among the charter’s provisions. Mugabe has been a vocal opponent of gay rights for decades. “We won't accept that,” said Mugabe, who was the nation’s first prime minister and has been its president and de-facto dictator since

independence in 1987. “Please, young men and women, you don't have the freedom for men to marry men and women to marry women. You have the freedom for men to marry women. That's God's freedom. That's what created you and me.” H

Marriage Equality a Matter of Time WASHINGTON, DC - With marriage equality one of the most hotly contested items on the nation’s 2012 social agenda, new data shows that approximately 12 percent of America’s population live in states that permit--or soon will permit— marriage equality. Proponents of same-sex marriage say that recent polling numbers points to widespread cultural acceptance for across-the-board-parity in marriage. A dozen states have pending court battles, and voter initiatives of one form or another will litter the political landscape of 2012, a year with political as well as social consequences. Six states—Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont—as well as the District of Columbia issue same-sex marriage licenses. All the states as well as the District legislated the marriage laws. Last week, Washington State lawmakers approved marriage equality, although that is likely to be challenged, possibly by referendum An additional five states--Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey, and Rhode Island--allow civil unions that provide rights similar to marriage. A bill passed last week by both houses of New Jersey’s legislature was vetoed by Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican. A measure supporting samesex marriage was likewise introduced last week in Illinois, with pending bills from 2011 sessions still active in Hawaii and Minnesota. Marriage equality activists in Maine are also seeking a November ballot initiative to legalize same-sex marriage. In 2009, Pine Tree State voters overturned a state law authorizing marriage equality. The law had been in effect for just six

months. In November, voters in Minnesota and North Carolina will also consider proposals to prohibit same-sex marriage. Legislators in New Hampshire may also weigh a possible repeal of its marriage equality law. In 31 states, voters have approved ballot measures defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Lawsuits that seek to overturn bans on marriage equality or to expand civil unions are being litigated in at least 12 states’ courts, among them Hawaii, Minnesota, and the battleground, California, where a federal appeals court recently ruled against a voter-sanctioned referendum that banned gay marriage. A three-member panel found that the ban was unconstitutional, singling out gays and lesbians for discrimination. Lawyers for the religious and other groups behind the ban beat a midnight deadline to ask the full 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to rehear the 2-1 ruling that declared Proposition 8 to be a violation of the civil rights of LGBT Californians. The case will likely make its way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Congress passed the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in 1996. It defines marriage exclusively as a union between a man and a woman, and further said that states are not required to recognize samesex marriages that are performed in other states. A 1996 Gallup poll found that 68 percent of Americans opposed same-sex marriage; only 27 percent favored it. Last May, Gallup found that 53 percent of Americans favor major equality, while 45 percent opposes it. H

Dress It Up Boys! by A.J. CROSS According to a recent survey of data compiled from leading men’s magazines such as Esquire, GQ, and Complex, South Florida ranked in the top twenty places with the “worst dressed men in the country.” My guess would be that this is due to the casual attitude men here have, helped along by the high temperature. I have to admit that after reading the data, published by “Wire Image,” we could definitely stand to step up our wardrobe, boys. I have been to New Year’s Eve events, weddings, and funerals where men arrived in board shorts and sandals: really? PHOTO: Elmo Love - flickr.com/mycutelife

FLORIDAAGENDA.COM

Where have the black tuxedos gone? Where are the pinstripes, bowties, and suspende rs? I think tha t there is a sad trend that emphasizing “less is more” when it comes to men—perhaps why so many of us frequent Go-Go bars. I personally love the mystique of a welldressed man. The hottest thing about Superman was that you had no clue how hot he was as Clark Kent. Fashion designer Tom Ford responded to the survey by stating, “I think the bottom line is that men simply have no idea how to dress themselves. Even YouTube gives demonstrations on how to navigate your way around a bow tie. There should be academies for men’s fashion.” Ask and you shall receive! Let me give you some tips: Tip #1: Pleated pants are out. The trend is a clean, flat front pant with no

cuff and a modest break. The pant should be just right in fit; not too snug and not too full. Tip #2: The belt and the shoes should be in the same color spectrum. Black shoes and a brown belt are NOT cute. Tip#3: White still rules as the choice of color for button-down shirts, but it is BORING. Spice it up with a light blue checkered shirt, or multi-color bold pinstripe, or solid salmon or micro-dot pattern. Tip #4: “Formal” means tux or a suit in the tux family. “Business casual” means slim-fit khaki flat-front pant, brown belt, clean shoe or loafer, and slim-fit (European cut) button-down. Tip #5: A man should look like a man. If you want to wear sequins, satin pants, a shirt you can barely breathe in, or heels, then you might want to wait till I write about trani-fashions. Tip #6: Learn how to tie a bowtie. There is nothing more pathetic than a clip-on. Tip #7: Know your tie knots and when to wear them. According to W Magazine the basic four are “Four in Hand,” “Half Windsor,” “Windsor,” and “Shell Knot.” Tip #8: Vests are for guys who can’t find a shirt that actually fits (or lesbians), so unless the vest is part of a three piece suit, donate it to Poverello or Out of the Closet. The bottom line is that there is something sexy about a well-dressed man, and about understanding the current fashion trends. The ability to know that you should be wearing a size thirty-four jacket instead of a thirtyeight will make all the difference between looking like a stud and looking like a dud. I hope that the next survey finds South Florida men evolving into the fashion leader. H A.J. Cross is originally from Montreal and has written the “Cross Eyed” column for seven years. The GOP’s Three Ring Circus

FLORIDAAGENDA.COM

Cliff Dunn

“Marriage is an important part of getting ahead. It lets people know you’re not a homo. A married guy seems more stable. People see the ring, they think ‘at least somebody can stand the son of a bitch.’ Ladies see the ring, they know immediately that you must have some cash, and your **** must work.” - Alec Baldwin, “The Departed” The latest attack on the civil liberties of LGBT Americans came on Friday, when the three highest ranked Republican members of the U.S. House leadership filed an appeal with the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit in San Francisco, and asked them to overturn the decision of U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White, who on Wednesday ruled that the loathsome Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is offensive to the Constitution. Judge White—a Republican appointed by President George W. Bush-is the second federal jurist to rule that Section 3 of DOMA, the part that defines marriage as between one man and one woman, violates the Constitution’s equal protection clause. In his ruling, White— in the 1970s, a Nixon-appointed Justice Department lawyer--said that the 1996 law does not satisfy a “heightened scrutiny” test, which means that DOMA does not further any ‘important’ government interests. This means that the DOMA potentially could fail a “rational basis” test, which is a lower standard that asks if the law furthers a ‘legitimate’ interest. The case White ruled upon concerns a gay attorney for the 9th Circuit, Karen Golinski, who was refused spousal health care benefits for her wife. “The Court finds that DOMA, as applied to Ms. Golinski, violates her right to equal protection of the law,” wrote

Letters

“by, without substantial White justification or rational basis, refusing to recognize her lawful marriage to prevent provision of health insurance coverage to

her spouse.” White then became My Favorite Person This Week when he threw the hypocrisy of the states’ rights crowd back into the teeth of Ron Paul and the Tenth Amendment Set who hide behind federalism when pointing an accusing finger at a bullying federal government. He lambasted the law as an egregious and “stark departure from tradition and a blatant disregard of the well-accepted concept of federalism in the area of domestic relations.” I now know what is meant by an “honest constructionist.” Far from protecting marriage, DOMA actually weakens it, denying as it does federal benefits to same-sex spouses. If two gay men marry in Massachusetts, for instance, where marriage equality is legal, they can’t file a joint federal tax return, and aren’t entitled to Social Security

survivors’ benefits. That’s un-American. Last February, the Attorney General of the United States said that his department would no longer defend DOMA in court. That’s when Boehner and the Republican leadership of the House formed the conspiracy called the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Committee, to take up the Justice Department’s slack. It was a clever idea, since they appointed the two senior House Democrats, Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer, to sit on the board and ensure there was no funny business. That funny business was in full force last week, however. Once Judge White’s ruling was made, any pretext of states’ rights and that other Constitutional inconvenience, Separation of Powers, went out the window, along with the suggestion of an actually “bipartisan” Bipartisan Legal Advisory Committee, whose Democrat members abstained from challenging the civil rights of LGBT Americans. There’s an old joke about marriage being a “three-ring circus: there’s the engagement ring, the wedding ring, and the suffering.” If Boehner & Co. would only dish out less of the suffering. H

WHAT’S INSIDE? It’s March, baby, and that means it’s time for one of the year’s biggest and best happenings: the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s 2012 Winter Party Festival on Miami Beach! One of the most anticipated events of the year, it runs now through March 5, and features six action-packed days and nights, nine spectacular dance parties, and over 10,000 guests from around the world! Inside Style, you will find a three-page spread including dates, times, and places for this great “Party with a Purpose” that benefits so many South Florida LGBT activities and causes. Check it out! Courtyard Café is a familiar sight to many Wilton Manors and Fort Lauderdale residents, but it’s owners, Shawn Bombard and Nick Berry, want you to know that there’s plenty that’s new as well as familiar on their everexpanding menu—a menu that goes along with their ever-expanding Comfort Food Empire, now with three locations. Find out what’s cooking in Shawn & Nick’s kitchen, inside in Dining. They say that your attitude will affect your attitude. Could this mean that your diet will affect your riot? (Work with me, here, please.) Most of us have heard that “you are what you eat,” but Andy Kress reminds us this week that what we’re eating could be eating us! “Eating Your Way to a Bad Mood” is something we should all avoid, and it’s also the subject of this week’s Nutrition column. You may know the ladies—and guys— of Chic Optique from their ubiquitous presence in the Shoppes of Wilton Manors, but you may not know just how involved Julie and Karen are with many of the charitable and service organizations that provide so much to so many to the LGBT community. We take an upclose-and-personal look at this dynamic duo, this week in Spotlight. If you’ve been jonesing to break out your best Sean Connery impersonation, this week’s Travel destination may provide some inspiration, as writer Paul Rubio gives us a second look at the Scottish Highlands, in “Castles in the Clouds (Part 2).” St. Patrick’s Day approaches and Chef Jean Doherty of Le Patio has a traditional Irish Recipe (which she learned to cook in France, of all places!) with which you can flex your gourmet muscles. We’ll see you at Winter Party Festival!

CASTLES IN THE CLOUDS PART II: GLENAPP AND EDINBURGH

By PAUL RUBIO

Continuing with last week’s castle theme, we’ll examine the jewel of coastal Scotland, Glenapp Castle, and the magic city that lies between all of these storybook fortresses – Edinburgh. Glenapp Castle

High on the lush hilltops of Ballantrae, Ayrshire, gazing over Scotland’s pristine southwestern shores, Glenapp Castle (glenappcastle.com, +44-1465-831-212) embodies the mystique and the magic of the illustrious British castle experience. Glenapp’s 36-acre estate is a multihued wonderland of lavish walled and tiered gardens, reflection ponds, extensive moss-clad forest trails, and breathtaking panoramas of the Irish Sea.

tional equilibrium of formality and informality. You’ll feel right at home posing for your Facebook castle album in casual threads, using the 19th century quixotic decadence and decorum as your muse. You can sip lots of whiskey and then get lost on the numerous walking trails, which lead through the verdant surroundings to the Irish Sea. There’s no pressure here - just plenty of vacation-style unadulterated rest and relaxation. Edinburgh Stopover

begins at an exceptionally awesome price point – 90GBP. Take it from someone who lived in the UK for years, a UK bargain is almost an oxymoron but this one is for real! It’s easy to navigate the entire city by foot from the hotel. Any “top” sight you’ve heard or read about is a short walk away. Come nightfall, Greenside Place comes to life with its collection of gay bars, including C.C. Bloom’s and Café Habana. Who knows? You might even meet your Prince Charming, go back to his castle, and write your own gay fairytale! H Arriving at Glenapp’s girthy wooden double doors, a set of Clue-type personalities (e.g. Colonel Mustard and Mrs. White) stand eager to greet. An uncontrollable sense of “Holy Cow! I’m staying in a real castle” excitement immediately ensues, a feeling that never quite ends as you live out the days of your fairytale fantasy. Enveloped by windows, natural light illuminates the imperial living room, adorned with plush maroon and cream furnishings accented by light gold trim. Similar to the stately dining room and the majority of the castle’s 17 rooms and suites, the living room delivers tremendous panoramic views of the manicured gardens, native foliage, crashing waves, and nearby islands - a sensational juxtaposition of jade forests and sapphire seas. The cuisine here completely defies the bland British food stereotype, (thank G-d) highlighted by a nightly five-course gastronomic extravaganza. With a more casual and approachable vibe than other Scottish castles, Glenapp achieves an excep-

Women Behaving Goodly Chic Optique’s Carroll and Slater Give Back to the Community in a Big Way By PHOEBE MOSES

You couldn’t tell at first glance, but the staff at Chic Optique combines over 100 of experience in the eyewear business. It must be all that clean living, with an ownership philosophy that’s as simple as it is meritorious. “Always give back to our community,” says Karen Carroll, who, with partner Julie Slater, owns the landmark Chic Optique in the heart of Wilton Manors downtown area.

“We always wanted to live in the area,” recalls Carroll. Eyewear would play a part in the couple’s life from the get-go. When the couple met 15 years ago, Carroll had just relocated from New York and was looking for parttime work. An ad in a local gay rag led Carroll to apply at a local optician. That’s where she met Slater, a Florida native. They became friends and, later, partners. The couple opened Chic Optique in the Shoppes of Wilton Manors in February 2003. “We wanted to work and live in Wilton Manors and be part of this great community where we feel at home,” Carroll remembers. Their business model included competitive pricing, having a large selection in stock, and translating that sense of “community” into their customer dealings. Carroll emphasizes how critical it is for customers to feel cared for. “We want to have people feel completely comfortable in our office and treat them like family, and back that with great service and care,” explains Carroll.

Part of that customer service model involves having the right staff. Eddie Fiorenza, who worked with Slater and Carroll in the late 1990s, came with them to Chic Optique nine years ago. “We couldn't do it without our staff, the Chic Optique family,” says Carroll with feeling. “Eddie Fiorenza, Marcus Rowe: they give so much to our community every day.” In that spirit of giving to the community, the women of Chic Optique have a commendable history of supporting service organizations and charities that contribute to the well-being of the local LGBT community. A much abbreviated list of their service organizing beneficiaries includes Poverello Food Bank and Thrift Store, Broward House, Care Resource, the Smart Ride, and Tuesday’s Angels. “We try to help any group when we can, and admire so many in our community for doing so much,” says Carroll with real appreciation. “Julie and I feel blessed we can be a part of that involvement in giving. It gives us

a chance to make a difference in our own, small way in people’s lives.” The partners say they would like to build upon that foundation of customer service and community service in the coming year. “We want to continue to have the best selection of eyewear for every budget. We want to improve our business and be innovators in our field by using the latest lenses and technology for the best vision and fit.” They say they are grateful for what the last decade has brought to them. “We feel honored to live and work in our community with the most wonderful people,” Carroll says, then adds with a smile, “and we want to continue to professionally style you so you look HOT, feel good, and see great!” Chic Optique, in the Shoppes of Wilton Manors, is located at 2228 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors, FL 33305. -954-567-3937 or at www.chicoptique.net. In Emotional Episode GLEE Tackles Gay Suicide

FLORIDAAGENDA.COM

Daniel Radcliffe Gets Tough on Bullies By Rory Barbarossa The star of the blockbuster “Harry Potter”

rory barbarossa Last week’s episode of the hit series “Glee” (Tuesday, 8 p.m. ET, WSVN-7) drew attention to the national epidemic of gay teen suicides, with the outing of character Dave Karofsky (Max Adler), a jock and bully who had previously tormented the openly-gay Kurt (Chris Colfer). After Karofsky’s football teammates haze him with Facebook posts (“Go back into the closet.”) and vandalize his locker with the word “fag,” the teen attempts suicide, after which his father finds him and rushes him to the hospital. “I was incredibly happy that the writers and producers chose to go there, and I said that to them, ‘It's so brave and honest, and you're really treating this character with the integrity that he deserves,’” Adler told “E!” The actor explained his choices in depicting the character’s struggles of self-acceptance. “I felt like to not show the struggle and to have him just kind of flip over and be nice and be happy, I just felt like it wouldn't have done it the proper

justice and it wouldn't have been treated with the honesty that it deserves,” Adler described. He also

believes that from near-tragedy springs a positive note. “I feel like the message that results out of that in the end is one of hope and optimism,” he offered.

The stage for the teaching moment had been set during the hit series’ 2010 season, during a show-shocker when Adler’s Karofsky character planted a wet one on nemesis Kurt in the episode “Never Been Kissed.” Prior to this, Karofsky had treated Kurt with only scorn and disdain. The openly-gay virgin Kurt was widely believed by fans to be getting his first kiss in that episode, but they were stunned to find out by whom it would be delivered. Producers had lulled viewers with a red-herring: a gay rival glee-clubber named Blaine. Kurt was smitten with Blaine after the latter’s glee club performed Katy Perry's “Teenage Dream.” Sparks flew. Having led the audience down the garden path, the writers then locked Karofsky’s lips with Kurt’s, although it took more bullying and a near-death-experience to resolve things for the characters, at least up until this point. Views should settle in and ready themselves for a few months of wondering: “Glee’s” next new episode airs April 10. H

films is solidifying his credentials as an LGBT hero. Actor Daniel Radcliffe has long been a supporter of anti-bullying efforts and, for the past two years, an unofficial spokesperson for the Trevor Project, the not-for-profit organization which provides crisis and counseling services for LGBT youth. Now Radcliffe is starring in a new antibullying public service announcement for the group, which awarded the actor its Hero Award last year in New York. The campaign made its first U.S. airing on Feb. 21, in which Radcliffe urges kids to seek help if they are being victimized by bullies. In the PSA, the actor says, “I'm Daniel Radcliffe, and I believe that reaching out for help is the bravest thing a person can do. If you are struggling and need support, call the Trevor Lifeline. It's free and confidential, and trained counselors are there to listen 24/7 without judgment.” H

There is no doubt that our thoughts, emotions, attitudes and moods, as well as control of our nerve and muscle function, are all centered in the brain. The food we eat directly affect all organs in your body, but none more so than the brain. The link between a poor diet and poor emotional health is not only real, it’s common. Deficiencies of certain vitamins and minerals are extremely deleterious to the body, and even more so to the brain. A varied diet of complex carbohydrates will supply the brain with amino acids to help it perform at its peak function. Eat too few, and risk depression, headaches and fatigue. Because of the fortification of grains and abundance of food in industrialized countries, we don’t often see mental and emotion disorders due to famine. Unfortunately, there are still plenty of cases of mental and emotional disorders due to poor diet, anorexia, obesity and people with special nutritional problems, such as alcoholics, however. Having any one of these disorders can severe affect your moods and the way you act and react towards others. All of the most basic brain and body functions in life are sustained by oxygen, water and food. Messing with your diet can cause these primal functions to literally short circuit. The brain works by chemical, electrical and hormonal interactions. Chemical neurons in the brain communicate messages constantly to each other. These compounds are synthesized as needed from amino acids and other components consumed through the diet. Tryptophan, an amino acid, is found in all complete proteins such as meat, eggs and milk to aid the brain in producing serotonin. This neural transmitter regulates quite a few functions, such as sleep, pituitary hormone secretion and pain reception. Despite what you may have heard, there are no truths or evidence to prove food additives or junk food instantly affects your mood and the way you behave. Even with the

justification of the “twinkie defense,” your diet does not control your immediate actions and reactions. Only a poor diet prolonged over time can create the deficiencies related to emotional and behavioral disorders. But don’t think it can’t happen to you. It takes less than 90 days to see a significant change in mood and behavior if you deprive yourself of certain vital nutrients. Lacking B vitamins can cause memory loss and various other behavioral and emotional changes in a very short amount of time. Eating a variety of seafood, dark green leafy vegetables, nuts, liver, eggs, soybeans, whole grain breads, cereals, and pastas is a great way to give the body and mind what it needs for fats, amino acids and B group vitamins. Cutting down on sugary carbohydrates and replacing them with high protein at lunchtime is especially helpful. Caffeine is one of the best-known mood altering dietary items. This stimulant can be found in teas, colas, chocolate and particularly coffee. Alcohol is the next best-known mood-altering substance and the most toxic on the organs and brain. Be aware that alcohol depresses many functions of the brain, causing depression, anxiety, sleeplessness, and unexpected irritability. Knowing that what goes in your mouth in the way of food can directly affect what may come out of it in words, be wise in what you choose to eat. A varied diet of healthy foods will keep your moods and energy up. Choose poor ingredients, processed foods, or nothing at all, and be prepared for low energy, moods swings, anxiety, sleeplessness, and possible depression. P.S. If you must drink—eat. The merry part will handle itself. H

THIS  WEEK’S  TASTY  RECIPE: B e e f G u i n e s s ® Stew By JEAN DOHERTY

Believe it or not, I made this dish for the first time after I had been living 15 years in France, of all places. We had just opened our Irish Pub and “Paddy’s Day” was coming up. The dish was a great success, the reason being it is very similar to the French Boeuf Bourguignon. The difference is that for this recipe the meat should marinate overnight in the Guinness®. The “marinade” in the stout beer not only helps tenderize the beef, it also gives a rich malty flavor to this chunky and delicious stew, which is likewise flavored with onions, carrots, garlic, and thyme. The stew may be made on the stove-top or in the oven.

2 pounds lean stewing beef or sirloin tip 3 Tablespoons of good olive oil 2 Tablespoons flour Salt and freshly ground pepper 2 large onions, coarsely chopped 1 large clove garlic, crushed (optional) 4 cups of of Guinness®

4 carrots, cut into chunks 1 lb mushrooms 4 cups of beef stock Bouquet garni Trim the beef of any fat or gristle, and cut into cubes of about 2 inches and cover with the Guinness in a container that you will leave overnight in the fridge. Next day, drain off the meat, and reserve the Guinness. Heat the oil in a thick assed saucepan over a high heat. Add the onions, and crushed garlic; and cook for about 5 minutes or until golden brown. Scoop out all this with a slotted spoon and set aside. Toss the meat in the hot pan. Brown the meat on all sides. Then add the flour. Stir. Add the stock, the Guinness and the bouquet garni. Bring to a boil and with a wooden spoon stir and scrape to dissolve the caramelized meat juices on the bottom of pan. Add the carrots and the mushrooms. Simmer very gently until the meat is tender -- 2 to 3-and-a-half hours. Stir often.

Top up with a little broth if you feel it’s needed. Taste and correct the seasoning. Stir and stir, taste, and add a little more salt if necessary. Serve with egg noodles or mashed potatoes. Garnish with lots of chopped parsley. You are an Irish chef! We will be serving Beef Guinness Stew for St. Patrick’s week @ Le Patio. Although born in Dublin, Ireland, chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale's Le Patio.

Courtyard Café Comfort Food, Gayborhood Style By Cliff DuNN Let’s face it: the Gayborhood—a Mecca for nightlife, outdoor activities, guest houses, and living La Vida LGBT—can sometimes feel like a twosquare-mile Sushi Emporium. I realize that this is a “high-class” problem, but when swimming in a sea of seafood doesn’t quite feed the need, it’s comforting to know that a familiar friend stands ready—at all hours, no less—to provide the right guilty pleasure at the right time. Courtyard Café is the flagship restaurant of Shawn Bombard and Nick Berry’s Comfort Food Empire. Open for five years, the café offers a wide selection of traditional American cuisine and bistro fare, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner cooking fresh at all hours, including all 24 of them on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. In an extremely competitive “gay ghetto”-market, the business duo of Bombard and Berry (known to friends and likewise “branded” as “Shawn & Nick”) have to offer potential new customers an enticement to come

through the doors and regular patrons a reason to come back. There winning formula proves to be a menu that is both familiar and fluid, coupled with late hours, friendly service, and the comforts of home cooking. A tour of the week’s dinner specials at Courtyard Café include their Monday Night Burger Madness, with 14 “guest” burgers joining their regular dozen classic-takes on the American, and Gayborhood, fave. That’s 26 mouth-watering burger varieties ($7.50-$8.26)- and a free soda or iced tea with the purchase of one between 4 and 11 p.m. On Tuesdays, your hosts invite youplus-one to a $20 dinner-for-two including your choice of appetizers, and entrees including delicate Lemon Pepper Haddock, succulent Yankee Pot Roast, a robust Chicken Carbonara served on a bed of tender pasta, and flavorful Jack Daniel’s shrimp, from 5 to 11 p.m. Wednesdays are also kind to the budgetconscious, with 2-for-1 dinners, and Courtyard’s weekend dinner specials

start at $10.95 and include your choice of soup or salad--Thursdays through Sundays from 4 till 10 p.m. The restaurant’s success in a neighborhood packed full of eateries is partly due to a mission to ensure every guest is happy when he or she leaves. There’s a reason you can see the same familiar faces on a daily basis, enjoying breakfast, lunch, as well as dinner. Co-owner Bombard showed me how it can actually be cheaper to eat at Courtyard Café every day than it is to shop, cook the food, and then do the dishes (not to mention all that wear-and-tear on a boyfriend’s dishpan hands). At a time when you seeing a lot of “sidewalk dining” popping up along Wilton Drive, Courtyard has the “original” outdoor breakfast dining spot, with their famous outdoor patio, a perfect spot to enjoy a beer, a glass of wine, or one of their six varieties of mimosas. The owners have two satellite locations, including Courtyard Café 2 at

The Depot Cabana Bar & Grille at 2935 N Federal Hgwy., where you will find many of the same food favorites from the Mother Ship Location, including homemade meatloaf and brown gravy. Unique to the Courtyard Café 2 menu: A basket of Mac-N-Cheese Nuggets--seriously! An additional satellite location can be found inside the popular Gelato Station at 2031 Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors, offering 36 flavors of ice cream, sorbet, sugar-free, and homemade gelato. As Berry and Bombard like to say, there is always something going on at the Courtyard Café, and we will be going back soon. H
