sworn account last week in which he testified having noticed a Webcam pointed in their direction during their encounter. The student, Tyler Clementi, committed suicide in September 2010. “I had just glanced over my shoulder and I noticed there was a webcam that was faced toward the direction of the bed,” the man, who has been identified only by the initials “M.B.,” testified. “It just struck me as strange, that if you were sitting at a desk, that the camera would be pointed that way.” “Just being in a compromising position and seeing a camera lens - it just stuck out to me.’’ M.B. also recalled not seeing an activated indicator DharunRavi - PHOTO Courtesy MSNBC

light denoting that the cam was turned on. His testimony was the most anticipated in the trial of Dharun Ravi, Clementi’s roommate, who is charged with bias intimidation, invasion of privacy, and other crimes. Ravi is not charged in connection with Clementi's death. M.B., the prosecution’s star witness, testified that he and Clementi, 18, first met in August 2010 via a gay men’s social networking site. The man, who said he was 30 years old at the time, met Clementi in the latter’s Rutgers’ dorm room on Sept. 17, two days before the alleged Webcam spying occurred. The media was ordered by the judge to neither photograph nor record via audio or video any part of M.B.’s testimony. The man’s attorney success‘RUTGERS SUICIDE’ continues on Page 11
Florida Gay Custody Fight Could Change State Law
Birth Mother Vs. Biological Mother By CLIFF DUNN TALLAHASSEE, FL - The custody battle between two gay Florida women could have far-reaching consequences for both state law and the cultural definition of what it means to be a mother. The two women, who have been identified in court papers only by their initials, were partners for 11 years. In 2004, nine years into their relationship, one of the women gave birth utilizing an egg from the other woman that had been fertilized and implanted. Two years later, the Brevard County women, who were both police officers, separated. The birth mother left the state in 2006, taking the child--a girl--with her. They
eventually moved to Australia. A trial judge ruled last year that under state law, the biological mother—the woman who donated the fertilized
egg—holds no parental rights. The judge added that he hoped his ruling would be overturned. In due course, the Fifth District Court of Appeal in Daytona Beach overturned the decision, ruling that parental rights were held by both women. The issue now finds itself before the Florida Supreme Court, although the justices have not announced whether or not they will hear the case. At the heart of the debate is legislation passed in 1993 by state lawmakers to define and regulate sperm and egg donation. But there is also the added complication ‘FLA CUSTODY’ continues on Page 11

FAB 2 GO Rolls Into South Florida
Heart Attack Strikes Local Business Owner
WILTON MANORS, FL – Although the economy has made South Florida’s tourist season start later each year than the previous one, there are still northern snowbirds flocking to Greater Fort Lauderdale and Miami’s beaches and outdoor activities. Anticipating this, two Broward County-based gay businessmen have launched FAB 2GO, offering “Fabulous Upscale Service,” according to their marketing campaign. Business and life partners Michael McNamara and Terry Fitzgibbons hope they can bring their business and marketing experience to what they think is a much-needed service in South Florida: luxury transportation for the gay traveler, and full-service concierge service for a discerning clientele. “I’m a Florida native,” says McNamara. “That gives me and the
Bogan is Stable; Partner, Friends Keep Copy This Up and Running
WILTON MANORS, FL – On Friday, Feb. 17, Bruce Bogan, the owner of Copy This and Planet Press printing and graphics, suffered a heart attack that left him hospitalized. Bogan, 50, complained of chest pains that afternoon, and placed a call to friend Brad Casey, an account
executive for Multimedia Platforms, LLC, publisher of the Florida Agenda. “Something is wrong,” Casey remembers Bogan telling him on the phone. He was experiencing chest pains and was sweating profusely when Casey arrived at his Wilton Drive store. “I could tell that he was in duress,” Casey recounted. “We rushed him to Imperial Point [Medical Center], and the doctors confirmed he was in the beginning stages of a heart attack.” After doctors stabilized Bogan, he was taken to Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, where a blockage was removed from his heart valve, a stent inserted by surgeons, and Bogan was placed on a heart pump to ensure adequate blood flow. He subsequently developed pneumonia. Casey says that Bogan’s prognosis is a long recovery, “but there is progress.” In the meantime, Bogan’s partner, Billy Sand, has stepped in to fill the void left in Bogan’s business operations. Friends are also lending a hand to keep both Copy This and Planet Press open for business, fulfilling existing customer orders, and taking new ones. “I want to thank [Bruce’s] family, friends, and the community for all your prayers, thoughts, and support during these difficult times,” offered Sand, the owner of Diner-by-the-Sea. “I look forward to the time when Bruce can personally thank all of you himself.” Bruce Bogan is a native of Brooklyn, New York, where he ran a successful printing enterprise before relocating his business to Wilton Manors about five years ago. Bogan recently won the grand prize in the “Dancing with the South Florida Stars” dancing competition, a fund-raising event for the Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation HIV charity. H
business a unique perspective in the niche we are filling. Terry and I know this area very well, and this gives us an opportunity to share what we know with visitors and clients who are looking to visit or work and play in South Florida--all from a native-born gay man’s point of view.” With two brand new, best-in-class, Mercedes Benz Sprinter vans, Fitzgibbons points out that they are not a taxi or car service. “Not that there’s anything wrong with those,” he added with a smile. The two are hoping to offer their services through a variety of affordable packages based on hourly rates, or by the trip. They are also working closely with Greater Fort Lauderdale’s gay guest houses and other accommodations to service the requirements of their guests. “We are a very reasonable alternative to driving yourself to Miami International Airport, or for visitors to be shuttled to all the happening places for shopping, dining, and entertainment,” says Fitzgibbons. Bullied Movie Inspires $25K Donation from Ft. Lauderdale Man CORAL SPRINGS, FL – An 83-year-old man was so moved by the recent screening of the movie Bullied: a Student, a School and a Case that Made History that he pledged to donate
$25,000 to efforts aimed at combating bullying and other hate crimes in Broward County. The Jan. 30 screening, sponsored by the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO), was an encore showing of the film Bullied at the Coral Springs Center for the Performing Arts. The film chronicles the story of Jamie Nabozny, a gay Wisconsin teen who fought his bullying tormentors in the federal courts and won. The suit led to a landmark decision that holds school officials accountable when anti-gay bullying persists. “In 2010, the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County donated money on behalf of Sheriff Al Lamberti and BSO’s Hate Crimes and Anti-Bias Task Force to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) to help produce the documentary,” said Capt. Rick Wierzbicki of the task force. “BSO was the only law enforcement agency in the nation to help produce the film.” Following the screening, audience members were invited to ask questions of a panel assembled for the event. Instead of asking the experts a question, Leonard Solomon of Fort Lauderdale announced that he was so moved by the film and Nabozny’s story, that he would donate $25,000 to the cause of educating the public about the evils of bullying in particular and hate crimes generally. “The movie made me realize the size of the bullying problem,” Solomon said. “There was a lot that struck me about it--the lawsuit--how lax the school

administration was. I knew I wanted to get involved.” BSO, in conjunction with the SPLC, premiered Bullied to South Florida audiences last September. Capt. Wierzbicki says, “the message of the film, which was really Jamie Nabozny’s message to the bullies who made his life hell, is that all children and teens are entitled to attend school in a safe environment that’s free from harassment and abuse.” The donation from Solomon, 83, will be split among three agencies: the Southern Poverty Law Center, the AntiDefamation League, and BSO. Wierzbicki says that a portion of Solomon’s generosity will be directed towards supporting future public screenings of Bullied. In addition, BSO will create a new hate crimes/antibias/bullying financial account that will help pay for future town hall-style hate crimes and bullying forums, and disseminating information to the public about bullying and hate crimes. “The generous gift from Mr. Solomon will enable the Anti-Defamation League to provide our Names Can Really Hurt Us assembly program at two high schools in Broward County,” said Robert Tanen of the Anti-Defamation League. In spite of the Nabozny decision, bullying against LGBT students remains a national problem, with more than 80 percent of LGBT youth reporting harassment at school. Despite this, many schools across the country remain unwilling to address anti-gay bullying. H

‘RUTGERS SUICIDE’ Continued from COVER fully fought legal efforts to identify M.B., on the grounds that’s he may be the victim of an alleged sex crime, which New Jersey classifies invasion of privacy. M.B.’s real name was given to the jurors in order to make sure none of them knew him personally. Although M.B.’s testimony carried both emotional and anecdotal weight, it did little to bring to light the reasons Tyler Clementi may have killed himself. In text messages between Clementi and M.B.—who was listed as “Mike Nice” in the former’s cellphone address book— the Rutgers students projects the image of an emotionally-engaged and newly infatuated teenager. The attorney for M.B., Richard Pompelio, spoke with reporters during a break in testimony. Pompelio said he doesn’t believe that M.B. is married and doesn’t know if his client is out as a gay man. “He’s a fine young man who came here under horrible circumstances to tell the truth,” said Pompelio. M.B. testified that he lived approximately 20 minutes from Clementi and Rutgers. He said that he and Clementi met a total of three times in the latter’s dorm room. The shortest of their dates lasted for approximately 45 minutes, while the longest took place for about two hours. The first encounter took place on Sept. 17, when Ravi was not expected until late at night, M.B. recollected. The man said in court that he left Clementi long before Ravi’s return. “I made sure to leave well before 2 a.m. as to not cause any conflict,’’ he recounted. The second meeting took place on Sept. 19, the date of the alleged Webcam incident. On that evening, Ravi posted on Twitter: “Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into molly’s room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with another dude. Yay [sic].” In court, M.B. testified that about a half dozen students were in the vicinity as he left the dormitory that night. “There were no thoughts that somebody might be watching me,” he said under oath. “If I saw a light on [the Webcam], maybe I would have brought it up. There was no light on,” M.B. insisted. In order to prove the criminal charges of bias intimidation, prosecutors must prove that Ravi intimidated Clementi specifically because he was gay. That charge has been refuted by several of the prosecution’s own witnesses. Even the fact that M.B. was not aware that the Webcam had been activated for a few seconds—or was even capable of being activated-- and that he was unaware of the roommate’s Twitter messages about the romantic encounters will make it difficult for prosecutors to attribute intimidation to Ravi’s motives. Last week, prosecutors presented several witnesses who confirmed that
BACK TO THE FRONT
they had seen Clementi and M.B. kissing that night via Ravi's Webcam feed. Clementi and M.B. met for the third and final time on Sept. 21 in Clementi's dorm room. M.B. testified that he had heard voices through the window, “talking in the courtyard--people joking, people laughing. It seemed like the jokes were at somebody else's expense.” Because of hearsay rules, the judge would not permit M.B. to describe how Clementi’s reaction to the derisive laughter. And since M.B. did not look out the dorm room window (thus preventing him from identifying the individuals who were laughing) and could not testify to the content of the jokes, his testimony cannot link Ravi to the charges of bias intimidation. The defense has portrayed Ravi as insensitive, but not biased against Clementi’s sexuality. His attorneys are painting a picture of the normal social awkwardness associated with the freshman experience between two unfamiliar roommates. Ravi, a native of India, was an outgoing, Ultimate Frisbee-playing techie from an upper middle class suburb of Princeton. Clementi, an accomplished violinist, was socially awkward and had only recently come out to his parents. Friends of the defendant confirmed that he had set up the Webcam in his and Clementi’s room, and that Ravi appeared to be "uncomfortable" about being assigned a gay roommate. After Clementi and M.B.’s initial encounter, Ravi allegedly utilized a friend’s computer to test his own Webcam, in order to capture a better angle on Clementi’s bed in the hours before the gay teen brought his male guest over a second time. Lokesh Ojha, another student residing in the same dormitory, testified that Ravi approached him for assistance. “He wanted to use my computer,” Ojha recalled during testimony. “He picked my iChat and he clicked his video and a video of his room came up.” According to Ojha, Ravi “went to his room and he told me to check the angle on his webcam.” “I went to the computer and he went to his room and he turned his computer screen, and I gave him a ‘thumbs up’ that it was okay,” Ojha recalled. On Sept. 21, two days after M.B.’s second date with Clementi, Ravi sent another Twitter post: “Anyone with iChat, I dare you to video chat me between the hours of 9:30 and 12. Yes, it’s happening again.” Students testified that when Clementi learned of Ravi's Webcam plan, he disconnected it. In cross-examination, the defense grilled M.B. as to the reasons he and Clementi chose to meet in the latter’s dorm room, rather than a more public location, and why M.B. hadn’t spent the night. “I didn't want to cause any type of conflict between [the roommates],” M.B.
offered. “I left happy. He was happy,” he described his last encounter with Clementi. At approximately 8:42 p.m. on Sept. 22, 2010, Clementi posted on Facebook: “Going to jump off the gw bridge sorry.” Authorities say that later that evening, Clementi committed suicide by jumping from the George Washington Bridge. M.B. testified that when he did not hear from the Rutgers student, he sent text messages to Clementi “twice a day every day.” He learned of the teen’s death after reading a print account of his suicide. “I didn’t know it until I picked up a newspaper,” M.B. said. Court records indicate that shortly after Clementi’s final Facebook update, at around 8:46 p.m., Ravi texted his roommate to offer an explanation for the Webcam feed and an apology. Minutes later, at 8:56 p.m., Ravi sent a final text to Clementi: “I’ve known you were gay and I have no problem with it,” it read. “I don’t want your freshman year to be ruined because of a petty misunderstanding, its adding to my guilt. You have the right to move if you wish but don’t want you to feel pressured to without fully understanding the situation.” H

‘FLA CUSTODY’ Continued from COVER of the rights of gays and lesbians to adopt and raise children under the law’s equal protection measures. In 2010, a separate appeals court ruled that Florida’s ban on gay adoption is unconstitutional. These issues, while framing much of the social debate now and in the months to come, make no difference to the biological mother, whose attorney says is solely interested in reuniting with the child she hasn’t seen since 2005. “She hasn't seen her daughter in years,” said Robert Segal, a Melbournebased family law attorney. “It's been terribly, terribly difficult for her.” H

AZ Restaurant Mgr. Tells Lesbian Couple to “Get a Room” After Kiss PHOENIX, AZ – A gay couple is furious after they were chastised by a hotel restaurant manager and told to “get a room” following a mutual kiss during an anniversary celebration. Last Sunday, Aeimee Diaz and her partner, Kenyata White, celebrated their two-year anniversary at the District American Kitchen and Wine Bar, which is located inside the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel. “My partner and I were reminiscing,” White recalled to the Arizona Republic. The couple were seated “in one of the tall booths,” obscured from sight by other patrons at the restaurant, where White and Diaz, both 38, had originally met. “I had my arm around her neck, and she had her hand around my waist. I gave her a hug for about a minute, pulled myself away to give her a quick kiss, and then we continued talking,” remembers White. At that point, the restaurant’s manager approached the couple, “and said we should get a room. That our behavior was inappropriate and we should leave the establishment,” reported White. Diaz and White were angry at the rudeness and presumption of the manager, and reported the incident to the Sheraton Phoenix, where officials released a statement this week that read, in part: “At District American Kitchen and Wine Bar, we embrace diversity and are proud supporters of the LGBT community. We are taking this incident very seriously. We have cultivated strong relationships with organizations dedicated to diversity. We have supported and we will continue to support many events that are specific to gay, lesbian and allied individuals. Additionally, we take pride in having a very diverse workplace--a workplace that offers benefits for domestic partners. Our restaurant is open for all to enjoy and we sincerely regret that this incident took place." H
Actor Kirk Cameron: “Homosexuality is Unnatural” ATLANTA, GA – Former teen idol Kirk Cameron is at the center of controversy
NATIONAL NEWS
over remarks he made last week during an interview on CNN in which he called homosexuality “unnatural” and detrimental.” The former teen star of “Growing Pains” was a guest last Friday on the cable network’s “Piers Morgan Tonight,” discussing his views on marriage equality and consensual homosexual behavior. “I think that it's unnatural,” said Cameron, 41. “I think that it's detrimental and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization.” Cameron, a Christian evangelist and promoter of The Way of the Master ministry, was equally disapproving of marriage equality, citing Biblical sources. “Marriage is almost as old as dirt, and it was defined in the garden between Adam and Eve. One man, one woman for life till death do you part. So I would never attempt to try to redefine marriage. And I don't think anyone else should either. So do I support the idea of gay marriage? No, I don't.” Officials of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) condemned Cameron's remarks, as out of step. “In this interview, Kirk Cameron sounds even more dated than his 1980s TV character,” GLAAD spokesperson Herndon Graddick wrote. “Cameron is out of step with a growing majority of Americans, particularly people of faith who believe that their gay and lesbian brothers and sisters should be loved and accepted based on their character and not condemned because of their sexual orientation.” Graddick also took issue with the actor’s inaccurate portrayal of marriage equality and his assertions about the definition of marriage: “With an increasing number of states recognizing marriage equality, Americans are seeing that marriage is about committed couples who want to make a lifelong promise to take care of and be responsible for each other and that gay and lesbian couples need equal security and legal protections. That's not 'redefining' anything." H
Timely Donation from Gay Congregation Keeps African-American Church’s Doors Open ST.PAUL, MN – The Grace Community United Church of St. Paul says a “miracle” donation of $15,000 is keeping its doors open, after more than 70 percent of the congregation left the
parish following its pastor’s endorsement of same-sex marriage. The donation was a gift from the United Church of Christ in Dallas, a congregation consisting mostly of gay and lesbian members, in support of Grace Community’s pastor, Rev. Oliver White, who voted in 2005 to support the United Church of Christ’s endorsement of marriage equality. The minister says that his progressive interpretation of human rights has cost him and his pulpit. “Some young people maybe age 12 or so were walking by,” White recently told local station WCCO-TV. “I said why don’t you all come to Sunday school this Sunday, and their response was, ‘We heard you are a gay church and we can’t come here,’” White recalled. The mostly African-American congregation is affiliated with the Congregationalist church movement, in which each congregation independently and autonomously runs its own affairs. “We are not a gay church, we are church with a door that’s open to everybody,” White explained. That sentiment cost White 150 members of his church, who said they could not support his belief that human rights and civil rights includes gay rights. “They take the bible very, very literally,” White noted of his former members. Hockey Players Launch Campaign on NBC to End Homophobia in Sports NEW YORK, NY – With a goal of ending “casual homophobia in sports,” the You Can Play Project has launched a campaign of public service announcements with the message that athletes should be judged on their athletic abilities, not their sexual orientation. The campaign has the backing of a number of influential sports figures, including professional athletes with the National Hockey League (NHL). The Project was created by Patrick Burke, a scout for the Philadelphia Flyers professional hockey team. Burke’s brother, Brendan, came out to his family and friends while he was

playing for the Miami University of Ohio hockey team. The Burkes’ father, Brian, is an outspoken sports figure who was the General Manager of the Anaheim Ducks NHL team at the time. The elder Burke supported his son Brendan’s efforts to erase the persistence of locker room homophobia. Those efforts were cut short tragically when Brendan Burke was killed in a 2010 car accident. Patrick Burke founded the You Can Play Project in order to build alliances between straight and gay athletes, and fans of sports, to get across the message that homophobia is not okay, on the field or in the locker room. Several PSAs have been shot already, which include NHL All-Star players and Burke’s father, Brian, who is now the GM for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The first announcement debuted last weekend on NBC during the first intermission of the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins game. “The goals for ‘You Can Play’ are clear,” said founder Patrick Burke. “We want to make locker rooms safe for all athletes, rather than places of fear, slurs and bullying. The casual homophobia in sports has to change, so all athletes know that what counts is whether you can play the game.” Professional hockey star Andy Miele, who won last year’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) award as the nation’s top men’s college hockey player, was a friend of Brendan Burke’s while they attended Miami University. “The reason why I wanted to be a part of You Can Play is pretty obvious. I had a relationship with Brendan, and if he was still here he would want to promote this more than anyone else,” said Miele, who plays for the Phoenix Coyotes. “I felt privileged when Patrick came to me and asked me to be a part of it and I look forward to investing this into players all over the world to make the sports world safe for gay athletes.” More than 30 NHL players have volunteered to support You Can Play’s PSA campaign. Burke says that the Project has contacted players and officials with several other sports associations and leagues, and that You Can Play will soon encompass all sports and their athletes and fans. H

Confusion Reigns as India Decriminalizes Gay Sex NEW DELHI, INDIA -In what was later described as a “comedy of errors” and “a farce,” a high ranking member of India’s Justice Ministry last month went on record before the nation’s highest court and asked it to permanently outlaw gay sex. Additional Solicitor General P.P. Malhotra, a senior attorney for the government, urged India’s Supreme Court to ban consensual same-sex relationships, just hours before the nation’s Home Ministry contradicted him and accepted a 2009 lower court ruling that decriminalizes homosexual intimacy. The Press Trust of India reports that Malhotra said that “gay sex is highly immoral and against social order and there is high chance of spreading of diseases through such acts.” A statement from India’s Home Ministry overruled Malhotra’s actions, saying it had no intention of challenging the 2009 Delhi High Court decision that struck down a law that makes consensual sex between people of the same gender a crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Officials said Malhotra had been reading from an old statement delivered before the 2009 ruling. The Home Ministry said there had been a “miscommunication.” It added that the ministry “has not taken any position on homosexuality.” Conservatives have asked the Supreme Court to overturn the lower court's order, and high court judges are hearing opinions from both conservative groups and LGBT rights activists. The 2009 Delhi High Court ruling struck down a 148-year-old colonial-era
By PHOEBE MOSES law that described a same-sex relationship as an “unnatural offence.” A number of conservative political, social, and religious groups want the colonialera law reinstated. Malhotra had conservatives in the courtroom wondering which side he was on when he insisted that India’s policies toward homosexuality should not imitate those of the industrialized world. “Our constitution is different and our moral and social values are also different from other countries, so we cannot follow them," Malhotra said, adding gay sex warranted criminalization. Within hours, the Home Ministry issued a statement contradicting Malhotra’s call for a ban on gay sex. “After the judgment of the Delhi High Court decriminalizing homosexuality was delivered, the matter was considered by the cabinet. The cabinet decided that the government may not appeal against the judgment to the Supreme Court," it read. During the past decade, a degree of acceptance for gays and lesbians has slowly emerged in certain parts of India, particularly in large urban areas. In the cities, bars feature regular gay nights, and a number of high-profile “Bollywood” films have dealt with LGBT themes. New Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata have also experienced large gay pride events in the past two years. In spite of this, there are many taboos associated with being gay throughout most of India, and many gays and lesbians remain in the closet to relatives, friends, and coworkers. H

Gay Irish Football Superstar Stands Up to Bullies DUBLIN, IR -The international campaign to stamp out bullying got an all-star boost last week, when Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) football player Donal Óg Cusack--the first openly gay player in the athletic league’s history--teamed up with straight English rugby star Ben Cohen for the launch of the “Stand Up! National Awareness Week against Homophobic Bullying,” organized in the Republic of Ireland, and endorsed by the nation’s school administrators’ association. “There’s a certain amount of stigma still associated with the subject--you still hear some kids using terms like ‘that’s gay’ or ‘faggot’ in a derogatory fashion. I think people should think carefully about what they are saying and think again as to why they’re using those terms,” said Cusack, who came out in 2009 in the pages of his autobiography, “Come What May.” The 34-year-old goalie and sports idol has become something of what the Irish refer to as an “agony uncle” to the bullied LGBT youth of the island nation, replying personally to many letters and emails from victimized by teens. “There isn’t a week goes by that someone in the same situation doesn’t contact me who has things on their mind, so it’s great to hear from some people saying I’ve made their life better,” the Gaelic professional football (or “hurling”) captain told the Irish Independent. A native of Cork, Ireland, Cusack says that he wasn’t bullied in school, but that it wasn’t easy to be a closeted gay teen growing up in the overwhelmingly Roman Catholic country, which only decriminalized homosexuality in 1993. “In those days homosexuality was illegal,” Cusack recalls. “You would always know there was a certain stigma surrounding the whole subject.” Cusack said that playing Irish football (Gaelic: “Camogie,” or “camógaíocht”) helped him feel a part of the people he associated with—mostly straight kids—while he was growing up. “It was the biggest contribution I could make.” He thinks that other gay youths should take note, as a way to feel that they are not disconnected from other
By CatHal O’PEadar teens, whether gay or straight. “There are gay people in all parts of society, but for some reason, young gay people tend to move away from playing team sports.” Cusack was joined by English Rugby champion Ben Cohen, who has a longstanding history as an anti-bullying advocate. The 2003 World Cup-winning football (soccer) player chairs the Ben Cohen StandUp! Foundation, a British organization that fights bullying and homophobia in sports. Cohen was one of the first straight professional athletes to champion a cause for LGBT youths and the community in general. Cohen says he was inspired to eradicate homophobic bullying by the loss of his father, who was murdered after trying himself to protect a man from being beaten. The WorldCup superstar has an enormous inter-national following among straight and gay fans, and uses the pulpit of his athletic stardom to encourage young gays who are bullying victims. A 2009 study by Ireland’s National Health Service found that half of Irish LGBT people have seriously considered committing suicide, while one-in-five have attempted suicide, and more than 25 percent have engaged in some form of self-harm. “You can understand why there’s a certain stigma [about coming out],” the sports idol acknowledges. “They’re worried about losing friends or what their parents might think.” He advises gay youths who feel bullied or threatened to “to talk about it to whoever they feel they can trust, a person or an organization, and to watch out for each other.” When in doubt, Cusack offers his own remedy for overcoming undeserved hostility, especially in his own professional experiences. “In big sports stadiums, people are always getting abused. If they are abusing me, it’s more a reflection of them than on me. I would be a lot more upset if it was about bad goal-keeping,” he mused. On reflection, Cusack thinks the end of intolerance is simply a matter of personal humanity. “As a people, we’re extremely tolerant and compassionate, and Ireland is in much better shape in this area than in other countries.” H

Your favorite virtue. Patience, of which I possess ‘zero,’ but I’m working on it.
Your chief characteristic.
I have an excess of energy, and I like to be busy all the time with numerous projects, but it can drive the people around me crazy trying to keep up because of the ninety irons I have in the fire at any given time.
Your present state of mind.
A person you would be, if not yourself. Someone who wanted to be just like me! (Immodest?)
Your favorite food and drink. With a last name like “Marzola,” do you even need to ask? (Hint: foods that end in a vowel-Italian!) And I do enjoy my Grey Goose martinis with stuffed bleu cheese olives.
Is chartreuse a color or an ice cream flavor? I’ll stick safely with “royal blue.”
Your favorite author(s).
Something you appreciate most in your friends.
Your main fault.
The absence of love.
Your favorite color.
Organization. Also, the ability to find someone else’s strengths and talents and help them to make the most of the gifts with which they’ve been gifted.
A fault you can’t tolerate in other people.
Anthony Robbins, Zig Ziglar, Joel Osteen, Donald Trump (sometimes), Carlos Castaneda. I also like Shakespeare, but gave up a while ago trying to get my “thees” and “thous” straight.
Your heroes in film.
When a person thinks he or she “knows it all.” When you stop learning, they put you into six feet of cold ground. Buh-bye. We should all continue to learn and grow and to help others.
Indiana Jones, Rhett Butler, Tom Cruise in “Top Gun,” and the character Charles Bronson played in all his movies.
Your favorite occupation.
My parents and grandparents—remember I’m Italian: it’s all about family. Also first responders (fire fighters, police officers,
Exactly what I’m doing now, but with an extra fifteen hours in the day to get it done!
Something you hate. Hate is a strong word. But I have no tolerance for intolerance.
I think that home is where your heart is, and your heart is full of the numerous blessings you enjoy at any given moment in time.
Honesty, loyalty, sincerity, and being able to make a hell of a Carbonara.
ambulance drivers, and paramedics). And everyone who gets up every day and works to support themselves or their family with a smile on their faces and a song in their hearts.
Your idea of misery.
Your ideal place to live.
Your favorite quality in a person.
Kindness and understanding (I need them both in large helpings). Being able to forgive, and, if not forget, at least to give me more latitude next time. (I’ll do the same for you: we’re only human, baby.)
Being at the peak of health and at the top of my professional game, surrounded by friends, family, and the people I love: not too much different from the reality I’m blessed to enjoy in this life.
Your heroes in real life.
“I like to think sane and happy, but not quite content: there’s still so much to accomplish.
The natural talent you'd like to be gifted with. The ability to time travel, so I could squeeze an extra seven or eight hours out of the day.
How you’d like to die. At the age of 155, in the arms of a 70year-old “younger guy” at the hands of his jealous boyfriend.
The reform you admire the most. I admire any person who makes the conscious decision to reinvent himself, whether getting a higher education at 50, or shedding some pounds to improve your health or the way you think of yourself, or deciding that a new career for a new year is just what the doctor ordered. (And if that’s the case: call me! I’m always looking to meet smart and enthusiastic men and women who are looking to make their career in a field that makes success stories every day—God isn’t making any more real estate!)
Your Personal Motto. Daddy’s buying…this time only, boys! H

wide-open space, in which can be found political progressives, conservatives, and moderates, as well as social traditionalists, radicals, and reformers, all of whom share a common urge to find the “common ground” and reach political compromise and solutions, preferably in a civil manner. The bipartisan “Gang of 14” U.S. Senators who successfully negotiated the spring 2005 compromise to confirm George W. Bush’s judicial nominees is one such example of the “Sensible Center in Action.” Sadly, so was Plessy v. Ferguson, as was the Dred Scott Decision. Call it “Tyranny of the Sensible Center in Action.” The difficulty for the Sensible Centrist is when he realizes that getting good and pissed-off is sometimes the only “sensible solution” (just ask my copy editor). Compromise is an American value, but so is taking on a righteous fight when it is called for. LGBT Republicans take note: George Bush (both of them, in fact) knew that the expiration date for “compromise” with Saddam Hussein had come and gone; our arguably-greatest president, Abraham Lincoln, acted with decisiveness, purpose, and lack of moral ambiguity when “compromise” with the rebellious states of the Confederacy proved inadequate. “The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present,” he told Congress in 1862 while his nation experienced the agony of civil war. Only Nixon could go to China, and perhaps it took a chaps-and-nothing-elseclad leather daddy or rainbow-coloredwig-bedecked drag queen in a San Francisco Pride Parade to place gay rights on the human rights radar screen. Producers and writers in the early days of series television took great professional and even personal risk to depict the trials

Dear Editor, Regarding a recent column by A.J. Cross, please “stop the insanity!” I can’t tell whether Cross needs a hug, a strong cocktail, or an intervention. About a month ago (Florida Agenda, Feb. 9, 2012: “Cross-Eyed: I Don’t Want to Be Gay”), I read his described attempts to apparently seduce a very confused man who hasn’t yet made up his mind whether he is gay or straight. While most gay people can relate to the pain and confusion associated with coming out, for some people this is a life-long struggle, and these individuals deserve our sympathy as they decide how they should best live their lives. The writer, while perhaps not meaning to, comes across as a predator exploiting a confused—and clearly emotionallyunavailable, to anyone—person more in
need of counseling than friendly advice from someone who seems to be looking to get into his pants. Clearly this person, as described by Cross, is screwed-up: he is 28, dating a 49 year old woman as well as Cross who I gather from his other writing is somewhere in his late 30s or early 40s. While the subject of his ‘affections’ is certainly in the throes of getting his head on ‘straight’—so to speak—the same can’t be said about the nameless woman, who appears to be a case of ‘Fag Hags Gone Wild’ (shocking!), while Cross appears to be in need of a good talkingto. The object of his affections has an excuse for being a “borderline” personality. What is Cross’ excuse? David, Wilton Manors

I recently had a conversation with a member of our staff, a bright, “small-y” young Republican with whom I occasionally trade political commentary and likewise tender barbs, concerning an editorial I wrote two weeks ago (Florida Agenda, Feb. 23, Editor’s Desk: “The Dream Within the Dream, Or, The Rise of the ‘Jim Queer’ Law”), in which I declared “No matter how well-meaning the supporters of civil unions and domestic partnership legislation may be, they must understand that for LGBT Americans, we cannot, we will not, endure an era of ‘Jim Queer’ laws and be thankful that things are ‘starting to move our way.’ That’s just plain un-American.” I don’t in any fashion mean to put words into the mouth of this generally thoughtful young gay conservative, who apparently took umbrage with the last part of my manifesto, because, in his world-view, the voyage towards marriage equality has already pulled into the station. To his mind-and presumably to the minds of many other patriotic and rational gay men and women of goodwill--civil unions, domestic partnerships, and other similar legal ‘arrangements’ fulfill some sort of moral equivalence between those—gay and straight—who want recognition of marriage rights for all Americans, and those—gay and straight—who think that there is some room for a middle ground or compromise position. I sympathize with them, because I am-in my own fashion--“guilty” of it myself. The “Sensible Center”--which I often extol as being the most reasonable, rational, and “American” of political ideologies--is a

Kirk had to kiss the sultry--and black--Lt. Uhura in 1968 on “Star Trek” to pave the way for Barack Obama sleeping in the White House, because it planted the seeds in the culture for a tolerance that certainly didn’t obtain a generation earlier. If we are going to change the culture into one where gay rights are human rights, then we have to convince ourselves of the evil of half measures. As a resolute Lincoln told an uncertain and even frightened Congress on that December 150 years ago, “As our case is new, so we must think anew and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country. H

WHAT’S INSIDE?
T
o help you set the tone for a great 2012, we have some great mind candy, including some healthy advice on what to DO to get the most out of YOU this year. Check out Tom Bonanti in Fitness. If you think that polygamy and No Happy Hours is all you need to know about the 45th state, travel writer Paul Rubio has an upclose look at things even Brigham Young didn’t know about the Beehive State: Travel with him to “Utah Unleashed [Part 1].” Guests at Fort Lauderdale’s new Tap 42 may recognize the neighborhood (it served as the location for “Brownie’s,” one of Downtown’s oldest watering holes, open since the 1930s), but the attitude and vibe is brand-spanking-new, and Tim Slivinski has reserved a cozy spot, in this issue’s Dining. Let me make one thing perfectly clear: we don’t know if Richard Nixon was gay, but a new book suggests that if he was, a lot of his “gaiety” may have taken place along Key Biscayne’s sunny shores, and we have the low-down inside, along with a New Year’s Recipe from Chef Jean at Le Patio, and a whole lot more! BOOK SHELF
Winter/Spring 2012 Book Shelf Is One Better than the Other? By Gregg Shapiro
In spite of a wildly moody weather pattern (cold for five minutes, then hot for the next three hours), spring is in the air in South Florida, and 2012 promises to be a prolific year for gay writers and authors of LGBT-interest fiction and non-fiction. You will want to get your spring cleaning kicked off early this year to make room on your newly-dusted shelves for some of the literary gems. If you can, try and catch the inimitable Brad Goreski, author of Born to Be Brad: My Life and Style, So Far and star of “Bravo’s” “It’s a Brad, Brad World,” and “The Rachel Zoe Project,” appearing tonight (March 8) at Books & Books on South Beach, 927 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach. Here’s a selection of page-turning mind candy to engage the most finicky of LGBT reading tastes: Literary delights • Coral Glynn (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2012, $25) Peter Cameron’s first novel since his acclaimed Young Adult (Y/A) novel Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You, is set in 1950s England examines how victims of circumstance learn to love one another. • In the Y/A novel The Miseducation of Cameron Post (Harper Collins,2012,$17.99), Emily M. Danforth tells of the experience of a young lesbian dealing with being queer while staying with her ultrareligious aunt following the death of her parents in a car accident. • Software engineer turned writer, lesbian novelist Ellen Ullman’s By Blood (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2012, $27), set in the gritty, early ‘70s of San Francisco, involves thin walls, eavesdropping, and a patient, her therapist and a quest for identity. • Teenage criminals Sarah, Jenna, Lauren and Cassie are sent to an experimental juvenile detention center on a farm to create something tangible – as three of the girls try to heal their wounds, one sets out to destroy everything they work for in
Getting Somewhere (Penguin Young Readers, 2012, $ 17.99) by Beth Neff. • Monstress (Ecco, 2012, $13.99), award-winning, queer, Filipino writer Lysley Tenorio’s debut story collection includes the National Magazine Award-nominated titular story among the eight pieces. • In his West Virginia-set debut novel The Evening Hour (Bloomsbury, 2012, $15), Carter Sickels introduces us to Cole, a nursing home aid and part-time drug dealer, whose interactions with the town folk, including an openly gay excon, are the basis of the story. • Acclaimed gay essayist and poet Wayne Koestenbaum returns with Blue Stranger With Mosaic Background (Turtle Point, 2012, $10.50), his first poetry collection since 2006’s Best-Selling Jewish Porn Films. • The Collected Writings of Joe Brainard (The Library of America, 2012, $35), edited by Ron Padgett, with an introduction by Paul Auster, includes the late gay writer’s groundbreaking autobiographical piece I Remember, as well as poems, short plays, drawings and comic strips, stories, journal entries and more. • Controversial and prolific queer writer Dennis Cooper returns with The Marbled Swarm (Harper Collins, 2011, $14.99), in which a young cannibal (yes, you read that right), tells the story of him and his late father. • High school sweethearts, Nate and Adam’s relationship survived the strains of homophobic brutality, but as college life begins in different cities their love is put to the test when new people enter their lives, forcing them to recognize what they really want in J.H. Trumble’s novel, Don’t Let Me Go (Kensington Books, 2012, $15). • The adult-oriented parody, If You Give A Kid A Cookie, Will He Shut the Fuck Up? (St. Martin’s Griffin, 2011, $14.99), an honest tale of a parent just wanting to find peace with

his noisy kids by Marcy Roznick, fills the void between the books Go the F**k to Sleep and If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. • “Sweep-you-off-your-feet” stories by Steve Berman, Simon Sheppard, Rob Rosen and ten other gay writers can be found between the covers of Best Gay Romance 2012 (Cleis Press, 2012, $14.95), edited by Richard LaBonte. Non-fiction now... • As colorful and stylish as the man himself, Brad Goreski’s Born To Be Brad: My Life and Style, So Far (It Books, 2012, $24.99), is a combination memoir and style guide, full of personal stories, photos and style tips from the gay star of Bravo’s reality shows It’s a Brad, Brad World and The Rachel Zoe Project. • Edited by Audrey Bilger and Michele Kort, Here Come the Brides!: Reflections on Lesbian Love and Marriage (Seal Press, 2012, $17), features contributions by Jennifer Camper, Holly Hughes, Joan Lipkin, Phyllis Lyon, Lesléa Newman, Monica Palacios and Lydia Stryk, among others. • Neil Hegarty’s The Story of Ireland: A History of the Irish People (Thomas Dunne Books/St. Martin’s Press, 2012, $27.99), includes the Emerald Isle’s 1990s decriminalization of homosexuality. • Published posthumously, The Weather in Proust (Duke University Press, 2012, $23.95) by gay studies pioneer and literary theorist Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, is a collection of pieces, edited by her friend and literary executor Jonathan Goldberg, of her work in the final years of her life, before she died of breast cancer in 2009. • As a devoted father, husband and professor at the Orthodox Jewish campus, Yeshiva University, Joy Ladin shares her transitions from a man to a woman in Through the Door of Life: A Jewish Journey between Genders (The University of Wisconsin Press, 2012, $26.95). • Princess Noire: The Tumultuous Reign of Nina Simone (The University of North Carolina Press, 2012, $22) by Nadine Cohodas is a
BOOK SHELF thorough biography of the late soul diva, musician, songwriter and civil rights activist. • Particularly timely in light of the recent changes regarding gays in the military, Out Of Step by retired journalist J. Lee Watton (A&M Books, 2011 $17) takes readers back 45 years to the Office of Naval Intelligence’s gay witch hunt to tell the true story of what happened during the summer of 1965. • The updated and expanded edition of John-Manuel Andriote’s acclaimed and Lambda Literary Award-winning 1999 book “Victory Deferred: How AIDS Changed Gay Life in America” (jmandriote.com, 2011), includes a revised preface and an entirely new chapter, “The Plague Continues,” inspired by the author’s own HIV diagnosis in 2005. • Described as “the definitive collection of writing” by a “pioneering theorist and activist in feminist, lesbian and gay, queer, and sexuality studies,” the substantial Deviations: A Gayle Rubin Reader (Duke University Press, 2012, $23.95), compiles some of Gayle S. Rubins’s “most influential essays.” • Including more than a dozen pages of color photos, It’s Not Really About the Hair (!t Books, 2011/2012, $14.99) by Tabatha Coffey with Richard Buskin, the memoir by the out lesbian host of “Tabatha’s Salon Takeover” is now in a paperback edition. • The Good, the Bad and the God-Awful: 21st Century Movie Reviews (Thomas Dunne Books/ St. Martin’s Griffin, 2011, $21.99) by Kurt Loder (of Rolling Stone and MTV fame) contains more than 200 movie reviews including some with queer content (The Nomi Song, Chloe, Savage Grace, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and its sequels, among others), as well as films from out filmmakers (I’m Not There, D.E.B.S., Broken Embraces and Burlesque).

PRIDEFEST RETURNS TO HOLIDAY PARk Heritage South Florida LGBT Event Celebrates 35 Years By Rory Barbarossa This Saturday and Sunday, March 10 and 11, Pride South Florida rolls out the 35th annual “Pridefest: Beyond the Rainbow at Fort Lauderdale’s Holiday Park and War Memorial Auditorium, with events taking place all week at local venues throughout Greater Fort Lauderdale, including Wilton Manors, Oakland Park, and elsewhere, embracing an off-site Official After Party. Pride South Florida, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, is composed entirely of volunteers with a mission to promote positive images of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) individuals. The group also actively furthers the progress of educational, civic and cultural activities in order to enrich the lives of LGBT persons and the larger South Florida community as a whole, working together to achieve common goals. Pridefest is the organization’s signature annual event, with all proceeds generated being donated to other local charities and LGBT community organizations. Organizers are faced with the typical challenges of throwing a large outdoor event, as well as the peculiarities of a recovering economy, and the realities of demographics: in a world where gays are actively courted to destination places across the globe, and where gay couples bedecked in red can hold hands walking down Main Street, USA, during Orlando’s “Gay Days, can they keep this heritage festival relevant? “Very much so, emphasizes co-chair Marc Hansen, who—in one capacity or other—has served on Pride South Florida’s board for years. “The very existence of ‘Gay Days’ and other great organized events can trace their roots to—and thank their lucky stars for— the sort of outdoor festival we are bringing to life. This is especially true at the time in which we are living, he adds. “Think about it: DADT [the Pentagon’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy], done. Gay marriage: on the books. Marriage equality is on the lips of every Republican candidate. Sadly, most oppose it. But these are the sorts of issues we come together and celebrate at Pridefest, says Hansen. “I love the very idea of ‘Orlando Gay Days,’ and the fact that kids are taking their same-sex boyfriends and girlfriends to prom in
places that wouldn’t have dreamed of it when I was that age, the Pridefest co-chair and former U.S. service member insists. “But that sort of gets lost during some other events that celebrate being LGBT. At Pridefest, we open the doors to everyone celebrating the very things that give us ‘Pride,’ and to acknowledge the struggles that lie ahead ahead. He laughs. “Pluto and Donald won’t help you do that. Hansen also notes the abundance of space and entertainment they have on the menu. For its 35th anniversary year, Pridefest 2012 will have outdoor and indoor stages, to take advantage of the air-conditioned War Memorial Auditorium, which will likewise host vendors and a display of Florida’s largest HIV/AIDS Memorial Quilt. In addition, the event will feature worldclass entertainers, including Logo TV’s Jonathan D. Lovitz, comedian Michelle Balan of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing and Logo’s “Out Laugh Festival, NBC’s “The Voice finalist Beverly McClellan, Billboard Dance/Club Play recording artist and songwriter Julissa Veloz (“Tiara Girl in season eight of “American Idol), South Florida performer Tony Cruz, comedy-hypnotist Jon Simon (“Simon Sez), legendary Freestyle artist Ray Guell, and the Pridefest headliner, 18-time Billboard Top Ten recording artist Taylor Dayne, among others. The event will also include a dance tent equipped with an enormous dance floor area, as well as more than 250 vendors, music, food, and activities all day, and lots of opportunity to socialize and connect with friends old and new. Pridefest 2012: Beyond the Rainbow, takes place both days from noon until 7 p.m. Holiday Park and the War Memorial Auditorium are located at 800 NE 8th Street in Fort Lauderdale, directly south of Sunrise Blvd. and directly east of Federal Highway/US 1.

REWORKING A MUSICAL CALLED
“WORKING” By WARREN DAY
S
tephen Schwartz has had an illustrious career as the composer of musicals for the stage (“Wicked,” “Pippin,” “Godspell”), and also for animated musicals produced by Walt Disney (he’s the winner of three Oscars for Best Song). The one musical that didn’t seem to work so well seems to have stuck in his craw, however. “Working” opened on Broadway in 1978, but closed after just 23 performances. After nearly 35 years, Schwartz has recently revamped the show, adding two new songs, cutting others, and updating the book. This new version is experiencing one of its first productions now through April 1 at the Caldwell Theater in Boca Raton. And as usual for this company, it’s a first-rate production. Based on a non-fiction book by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Studs Terkel, the musical tells--through a series of vignettes—stories about the everyday experiences of a variety of working people: a fireman, a cleaning lady, a teacher, a trucker, a housewife, a money manager, a receptionist, an iron worker, a fast food clerk, a prostitute, and even a retiree, whose time is spent talking about not working. Rather than a traditional book musical with a main storyline, it’s a kind of staged cantata devoted to the poignant, unexpected, and funny experiences of the workplace, providing insights into the dreams and disappointments of people who are often otherwise invisible to us. The workplace has seldom been the focus of a musical. Offhand, I can think of only two others among the hundreds of musicals in the Broadway canon: “The Pajama Game” and “How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying.” It’s strange that the workplace should be so ignored since we spend far more of our waking life at our labors than we do anyplace else. At least 70% of our time awake is spent either at work, or traveling to and from--much less preparing for or thinking about it. It’s estimated that the average American worker spends 100,000 hours of his lifespan in full or part-time jobs. (If that cold fact isn’t excuse for an instant mid-life crisis, what is?)
So it’s refreshing when a musical finds the workplace as its rhyme and reason, particularly one that’s as well directed and well performed as this one. Clive Cholerton, the Artistic Director for the Caldwell Theater Company, has personally directed and given the production a creative and energetic flow that makes the evening pass quickly. The cast of six professional and highly talented actors play various roles, and succeed in making you both laugh and cry. Particular notice should be given to Laura Hodos, who sings a show-stopper of a song about what a waitress does to turn her job into art. Schwartz is the creative force behind the show, but the songs are not only his alone: six
others, including five-time Grammy winner and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer James Taylor, and Mary Rodgers, daughter of legendary “Great American Songbook” composer Richard Rogers, contribute to the libretto. In the end, “Working” does what good theater has always done: help you see the life and choices of another person in a new and clearer light. The Caldwell Theatre Company is located at 7901 N. Federal Highway, Boca Raton, FL 33487. Performances at 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and 2 p.m. on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Call 561-241-7432 or visit caldwelltheatre.com. +

ADVENTURES IN CRUISING Tails of the High Seas By ROBERT ELIAS DEATON
Mention the word “cruise,” and we all know where your mind goes. Lingering stares across a room, a hint of a smile upon your lips. There is, of course, another kind of cruising that’s a little more expensive (or on second thought, maybe not). It’s the type of cruising where you pack your bags, get on a ship, and eat and play to your heart’s content while you move magically from port to port without mussing your hair (well, again, on second thought, a little muss can be fun). To help you plan your next cruise, or perhaps your first, GUY MAGAZINE serves up the best in cruising for Summer and Fall, 2012.
this cruise organized by Atlantis Events, the grand poo-pah of gay and lesbian travel. Leaving August 24 and returning September 3, this 11-day vacation is nothing short of an once-in-a-lifetime event with pit stops in Mykonos and Santorini, Greece; Kusadasi,
and Istanbul, Turkey; the island of Malta; plus the Sicilian capital of Palermo. With lots of flesh and hard bodies, Atlantis cruises are quickly sold out. There are, however, often last minute cancellations as well. (www. atlantisevents.com)
ITALY, GREEK ISLANDS & ISTANBUL Sail aboard the Celebrity Equinox with 2,700 gay men and lesbian women departing from Civitavecchia, the port just west of Rome, Italy, in
HAWAII This 15-day cruise is organized by one of our favorite gay travel agencies, Manhattan’s Pied Piper Travel, aboard the luxurious Celebrity Century. Although totally refurbished in 2006, this 1,808-passenger ship has an old-world charm. Expect more baby-boomers on this cruise line, where elegance and refinement dictate dress code and behavior. Sugar Daddy alert! There is no denying the sundrenched lure of Maui, the Big Island and Oahu, however, so grab your number 50 lotion for this cruise that departs on April 5 from San Diego, returning April 20. (www. piedpipertravel.com)
BAHAMAS While the Bahamas are our closest island cruise destination, when left in the hands of Source Events, the place becomes a totally different experience altogether. Source is the official producer of the Miami Beach Pride Cruise, departing on April 16 for fourdays aboard the Norwegian Sky. The ship has a capacity of 2,000 with Source Events promising a Tropical Fantasy Costume Party, a trio of tea dances, an exclusive gay movie screening, and assorted treats (or was that “tricks”—we’ll check and get back to you). Pride or not, this is a mixed cruise, so no nude sunbathing by the pool. (www. sourceevents.com) PRAGUE AND THE DANUBE RIVER While it may seem strange to start a cruise of the Danube in the Czech Republic’s capital Prague, through which the Danube does not flow, it was a natural choice for Brand G Vacations, who put this package together. Ever since porn director William Higgins left Hollywood and made Prague his homebase, the place has become a very gay-friendly destination. You’ll definitely want to check out these cobbled streets and back-rooms before hopping on a bus and making a mad dash over to Nuremberg, Germany (with a pee break in Carlsbad). Once there, you’ll board the Amadeus Waterways’ MS AmaCerto. No, you’re not on the Danube yet, but rather on the MainDanube Canal which eventually runs into the River. Once you eventually hit the Big D (which by the way is no longer Blue as Strauss once claimed), get set for a leisurely float down the river to Vienna, where you’ll spend two days riding bikes and waltzing, if that’s your thing. It all begins on August 21 for 10 days, with the boat dropping you eventually in Budapest, Hungary. A graduate of Harvard University, Paul is the author of “Out Traveler: South Florida” and caters to both avid voyagers and armchair travelers.

(Rumor on the Drive has it that a few kind words about FSU gets you in good with the effervescent publicans.) Just a few doors down is the southwestern-themed Rodeo Restaurant and Bar (2033 Wilton Drive), with a select Happy Hour specials menu: 50% off bottles of wine, Tuesdays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.; half-price martinis on Wednesdays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Thursday Ladies Nights, with half-price well drinks, beer, and wine glasses. One of the Drive’s most recent offerings is Pinché Taqueria (2045 Wilton Drive), a NYC-by-way-ofTijuana-transplant, offering great outdoor atmosphere and a daily 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Happy Hour with $4 well drinks, $5 Pinché margaritas, and $20 margarita pitchers, as well as halfpriced appetizers from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Fans of the hip ambience and charming environs of the Naked Grape Wine Bar (2163 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors) followed owners and partners

on’t tell the tourists: South Florida locals already know that some nights are busier than others (well, duh!). The same cannot be said of Miami-Dade and Broward’s gay Happy Hours, where friends and familiar faces blend with the out-of-town set to form a perfect blend of postwork and pre-night-out. To accommodate the multiple “crowds” (Baby Boomers and Gen X’ers, as well as Rat Packers and Brat Packers) that descend their watering holes, from South Beach to North Andrews Avenue, local saloonkeepers and restaurateurs have set up a clockwork timetable to keep the most budget-conscious, driest boy or girl well-lubricated (in Happy Hour libations, at any rate). Our tour of Happy Hours starts in Broward’s Gayborhood, Wilton Manors. At Tropics (2000 Wilton Drive), Happy Hour starts at 4 p.m. and runs through 9 p.m., Monday through Friday. Drinks are two-for-the-price-of-one (hereinafter, 2-4-1), which—in keeping with Gayborhood tradition--involves paying for a round all at once, and getting a chip for your second drink. In this case, that chip can be used at any time, even during the wee small hours when drinks are full pop. Across the way is Sidelines Sports

drink Happy Hours Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., as well as $7 premium martinis all day long. On the south side of the Gayborhood, where Wilton Drive turns into NE 4th Ave., you will find Fort Lauderdale’s oldest gay bar under the same ownership, Ramrod (1508 NE 4th Ave., Fort Lauderdale), a leather, Levis, and uniform bar with hot men and a 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily 2-4-1 Happy Hour (weekends included!). Voted the Number One Leather Bar in the World, Ramrod also hosts a Thursday “Bear Happy Hour” hosted by the Leather Scene Daddy Chad Bush. Mona’s Cocktail Lounge (and its adjoining Lisa’s Backyard, 502 E Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale) has been a favorite of locals since the first drink was served in 1997. Happy Hour is celebrated seven days a week from noon till 9 p.m., with $2.50 domestic beers and well drinks, and $1.25 drafts. Just around the corner, at PJ’s Corner Pocket (924 N Flagler Dr., Fort Lauderdale), you will find a Monday through Friday Happy Hour with $1 off every drink, as well as an everyday five 7 oz. Bud Lights for $5 special. Nestled between gay-friendly Victoria Park, Wilton Manors, and Downtown Fort Lauderdale on US 1, you’ll find the Cubby Hole (823 N Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale), the “Best Little Butch Bar” in town, with a Levis-and-and leather vibe, serves up Happy Hour—and this should be easy to remember—with 2-4-1 drinks all day every day. The scenic route that loops north around US 1winds its way to The Depot Cabana Bar and Grill (2935 N Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale), with a neighborly, poolside Happy Hour that features half-price drinks, Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. til 8 p.m. South Florida’s “busiest neighborhood bar,” Smarty Pants (3038 N Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale) has locals and visitors starting early, in Times Square Plaza, has Happy Hour seven days a week, starting at 9 a.m. and continuing through 8 p.m., with daily specials and discounts off their low drink prices. Still on the east side of Greater Fort Lauderdale, nestled between the beautiful Intracoastal Waterway (thank you, hunky Army Corps of Engineers!) and the sands of Fort Lauderdale Beach, Dudes on the Beach (3270 NE 33rd St., Fort Lauderdale), the “home of Fort Lauderdale’s best happy hour,” features a seven day a week 2-4-1 special from 4 p.m. to 9

On Thursdays, get social with an expanded 5-to-close Social Hour, including $5 house wine glasses and bar bites, and the wine bar’s for-pets-and-theirhuman-companions “Yappy Hour,” hosted by Naked Grape’s Brett and his canine companion, Penny, and featuring a menu of ‘Tapas for Pets,’ courtesy of Lola’s Healthy Pet Café in Wilton Manors. As Caleb and Tim like to remind friends and guests, Naked Grape is “pet-friendly for friendly pets.” Bring yours, and enjoy a round or two together. The perennial (and perennially-busy) Bill’s Filling Station (2209 Wilton Drive), includes Happy Hour of half-off drink prices from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday, with an additional half-price “Bear Necessities” Happy Hour on Friday nights from Midnight to close. Another new Drive-arrival is Wilton’s Bier Garden (2245 Wilton Drive), with a continental flair and a new full-liquor bar, and a Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Happy Hour including 24-1 domestic draft beer, 2-4-1 well drinks, and 2-4-1 Coastal Vines house wine selections. Just down (or is it up?) the Drive, is The Manor Restaurant and Nightclub complex (2345 Wilton Drive), which is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, but open for biz the rest of the week, with Happy Hour Wednesday through Friday from open ‘til 9 p.m., 2-4-1 drinks and $5 tapas (and what tapas!). Did somebody say Rosie’s Bar & Grill (2249 Wilton Drive)? A Gayborhood fave for years rolls out its Happy Hour Mondays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with half-priced premium well, beer, and house wines and $1 off all other cocktails (excluding premium wines). Matty’s on the Drive (2426 Wilton Drive) has a new New York deli, and a 2-4-1 Happy Hour that runs Monday through Saturday from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., and a drink chip that’s good through 10 p.m.! (Is there a downside to this?) What could we possibly say about Georgie’s Alibi (2266 Wilton Drive) that hasn’t been said before? The heritage Manors bar (open since 1997) runs its popular 2-4-1 Happy Hour Monday through Friday, with great food, friends, and faces (same as it ever was). TAPS AND TAPAS Pub Food and Eye Candy By RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN
T
he Manor Complex on Wilton Drive is already world famous for its theme parties, state-ofthe-art sound system, creative lighting, and hunky salacious bartenders. Get set to add to that sizzling scene, courtesy of their new restaurant, Taps & Tapas, which matches the fun, beat-for-beat. Whether sitting outside on the front patio and eating al fresco, or dining inside the club, Taps & Tapas leaves its mark with such casual ease that you just might be tempted to dismiss the food itself. That would be a big mistake. The new menu is divided into large chunks, and sectioned off with your stomach’s capacity in mind—in theory. We say “in theory” because one could suppose that a chunk labeled “Small Plates” would translate into a small portion. Nope. We ordered the Szechwan Calamari ($11.95) with that concept in mind. The kitchen, on the other hand, must had thought we were eating for two when they served up a heaping mound of tender calamari cooked just so, breaded in cornmeal and tempura crumbs, tossed in a Szechwan sauce with enough tang to wake up our epiglottis, and topped with almonds, red peppers, sesame seeds and scallions. The result was enough delicious calamari for each of us, plus several others who came
to peer over our shoulders, apparently invited by the tantalizing aroma. From the section labeled “Flatbreads,” we explored the Cajun--the Manor’s version of Sausage and Mozzarella Pizza ($8.95). The unleavened crust is a lowcarb delight that platters the toppings with determined tolerance, yet begs to be tasted on its own. If you’re in the mood for a sandwich, look no further than “Handhelds,” a chuck of the menu that deserves honorable mention for hearty presentation, given the portion size of its accompanying fries and pickle. At $10.95, we judged the Smoked Turkey with Brie and Apples the clear winner over the Skirt Steak, Barbeque Chicken Chop Wrap or the Grilled Cheese—all of which can be ordered on Focaccia, Baguette, Tortilla or Challah Bread. Our server Mike, who looks like he knows his way around a food table, recommended the hand-battered Onion Rings and the Thick- Cut Sweet Potato Fries with maple dipping sauce ($4.95). We couldn’t decide, so we ordered them both. Even as Mike helped us finish the plates, it was a tough call which one was better. We left the decision up to him, but he couldn’t tell us ‘cause his mouth was full.
If your eyes are as big as your stomach, or visa versa, we recommend moving directly to the menu section labeled “House Plates.” Called by any other name, this is the Big Boy’s division. The go-to selection is Bronze Roasted Salmon ($17.95). Here, a healthy portion of fresh Chilean Sea Bass is cooked to perfection and drizzled with a delicate lemon vinaigrette sauce. Riding shotgun next to the fish: baby-cute oven roasted fingerling potatoes, plus zucchini and squash which were good enough to go it alone. There are salads (starting from $5.95)—we recommend the Barbeque Chicken Chop ($13.95); and ½ burgers (all $11.95)—our nod goes to the Black and Blue, Angus meat topped with lettuce, tomato and onion. Just when we thought we couldn’t eat another bite of anything, we spotted the Raspberry Baked Brie ($10.95), a puff pastry treat served with grapes, apple wedges and sliced baguettes. In one word-“yum.” Even as we slid off our stools, stuffed and smiling, we promised to return on Wednesday for “Buy a Margarita, Get a Free Beef Taco Night.” You come too. And tell them Florida Agenda sent you. +

RECIPE
FLORIDAAGENDA.COM
THIS WEEk’S TASTY RECIPE The Original Sausage and Egg?
By JEAN DOHERTY
A Scotch egg is a hard-boiled egg wrapped in sausage meat, coated in breadcrumbs and deep-fried. The Scotch egg’s origins are obscure. The exclusive London “Fortnum & Mason” claims it invented the portable snack in 1738 for rich coach travelers. “The eggs would have been smaller in those days,’’ says the company’s archivist Dr Andrea Turner. “They would have been pullet’s eggs rather than hen’s eggs, and the meat would have been gamier.’’(And here I am wondering what a pullet’s egg is) The finest Scotch eggs I can recall, freshly cooked and of first-rate ingredients, are those I have noshed on in the pubs of Dublin, but then of course I’m biased, and just a wee bit patriotic.
Oil for frying 4 eggs 2 pounds pork sausage 4 cups dried bread crumbs, seasoned A little all-purpose flour 1 egg, beaten Place the eggs in saucepan and cover with water. Bring to boil. Cover, remove from heat, and let them sit in the hot water for about 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from hot water, cool and peel. Heat the oil in a deep-fryer to 375 degrees F. Flatten the sausage and make a patty to surround each egg. Roll it around in the palm of your hands so it’ll stick. Make a ball. Very lightly flour the sausage ball and then coat with the beaten egg. Roll that in the bread crumbs to cover evenly. Rock n roll. Deep fry until golden brown. Place on a paper towel to soak up excess cooking oil. Cut in half and serve over a bed of lettuce and sliced tomatoes for garnish. These eggs can be enjoyed with any sauce you love…mayo, ketchup…ranch? You are the chef!

NUTRITION
NUTRITION VS. EXERCISE Is One Better than the Other? By ANDY KRESS
In America, there are almost as many views on what good health really means as there are diets and workout regimens. One school says that Americans are too sedentary and need movement and exercise. Others suggest that it is the American diet and the way we eat that is at the root of our problem. One thing no one can argue about: Widespread child and adult obesity plagues our country big time, and it’s an issue that needs to be dealt with now. Nutrition is a fundamental necessary of life. We all eat—just not particularly well. Fail to get enough hydration, air, and food, in that order, and you will most assuredly die. While most of us aren’t at that extreme, the majority falls into that giant arena of nutritionally deficient. Millions and millions of Americans, gay and straight, have only a vague perception of healthy eating. Among them are the millions that dutifully go to the gym and workout without ever realizing that their efforts are futile without giving the body the fuel it needs to benefit from exercise. While following a varied diet (as illustrated in the pyramid plate) is always a good idea, eating proper portions of these healthy foods is just as essential. Too much of anything is gluttony, so try keep your portions around the guidelines of a 2000 calorie diet—or slightly less if weight loss is your goal. Eating these foods at the correct time of day is just as critical as the portion size. Eating less food more often provides a continuous source of energy for your body, whether it is exercising or not. Keep in mind, that your body burns calories even in the most sedentary individuals, due to the fact that the human body needs to maintain organ and brain functions to stay alive. Exercise is important and needed in everyone’s life to maintain muscular and skeletal strength. Without it, muscles eventually atrophy. Tom Bonanti’s Fitness column offers some excellent ways to vary your routines. Unfortunately, in today’s world, the
most common type of exercise is carrying excess fat as we walk around— and then only just enough to make it from one seat to the next. Appetite alone motivates most of us from one meal to the next. It is imperative that we re-assess that behavior immediately. Do anything less and you absolutely are shaving years, if not decades, off your life. While exercise is vitally important in the mix, it must take second place to nutrition. Without adequate nutrition, you cannot have good health. Without good health, you will not be able to work out effectively, even if common sense tells you you must. Only by putting these two elements together can you ever hope to achieve dramatic results. Proper diet and exercise can do wonders for the mind and the body, as well as lift your spirits. Eating portioned controlled meals (especially as we age) throughout the day, coupled with moderate exercise during the week, is the state-of-the-art way to achieve overall health. No crash diet or pill, or hurried explosive exercise routine will last long. These are short-term fixes for what should be a long-term goal. Knowing the facts on what it takes to be healthy is the best start to overall success. Please choose wisely and remember to keep all things (nutrition included) in moderation. Fast facts: The correct diet will trim the fat; the correct exercise will tone the muscles. Pair them together and become the best you can be. Forever.
