MARRIAGE EQUALITY OPPONENTS WEIGHED DIVIDE-AND-CONQUER STRATEGY 2009 Confidential Memos Detail Intricate Social Engineering Scheme by Conservative Group By CLIFF DUNN

AUGUSTA, ME – According to confidential strategy documents made public last week, officials with the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) considered a plan to manipulate Latino and black groups—two core constituencies within the Democratic Party—into political opposition against LGBT rights organizations in general, and gay marriage in particular. The strategy also

called for the recruitment of children in same-sex families in an effort to coax admissions from them on video of familial unhappiness. The memos, which were released by court order on March 26, detail a wellconceived strategy for manipulating Hispanic and African American opinions into opposing marriage equality for LGBT persons. They also suggest connecting

marriage equality to unpopular topics including pornography. The documents portray the Democratic Party leadership as “increasingly inclined to privilege the concerns of gay rights groups over the values of African-Americans,” presaging the strategy to play upon cultural differences. One memo urges gay marriage opponents to “find, equip, energize ‘MARRIAGE’ continues on Page 7

The documentary—based upon the true story of a gay teen’s court battle to uphold the rights and safety of LGBT students--has done much to raise awareness of the scourge of anti-gay bullying in schools. It has been shown several times in Broward County, most recently in Coral Springs: at that showing, a private citizen donated $25,000 to promote the film and anti-bullying initiatives. Of their decision to select Wierzbicki, a former Chief of Police of Wilton Manors, the committee wrote: “We concur with Sheriff Al Lamberti, who nominated you for this honor, on your unwavering dedication and involvement with various initiatives.”

WILTON MANORS – Group personal training has arrived in Wilton Manors, with the grand opening last weekend of BodyTek Fitness at 2216 N. Dixie Highway.

MIKE VERDUGO On Saturday, owner Mike Verdugo and his staff officially opened for business, with free exercise classes and a ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by Daisy Deadpetals. Local officials and members of the Gay Village glitterati attended, and circuit performer DJ Kidd Madonny played. The Wilton Manors location is Verdugo’s second BodyTek Fitness. Verdugo says that BodyTek’s fitness philosophy is foundational: no two classes are ever the same, with every session incorporating different exercises, techniques, and routines. This will prevent clients’ bodies from adapting and hitting the dreaded plateau. The program is designed to improve the cardiovascular system, while aiding weight loss and building muscle. And the former Hollywood cop notes, the concept of Group Personal Training makes achieving fitness goals more enjoyable and fun for clients. “We love being in Wilton Manors,” said Verdugo. “We have so many clients travelling to our Davie location from Wilton Manors, that it makes perfect sense to open a second location to service that high demand. We’re excited to bring our fitness services closer to our client base.” Verdugo’s enthusiasm is matched by others in the Island City. “I’m excited to see BodyTek opening on North Dixie,” said Krishan Manners, President/CEO of Wilton Manors Main Street. “That area is primed for new development and BodyTek is a good fit with the existing businesses in the Dixie Village area.” BodyTek sessions are one hour in length and that during each session clients are instructed to work out every body part using a variety of state of the art equipment. Verdugo says that they welcome clients of all different fitness levels, from novice to expert.

Our hearts go out to Trayvon’s family and friends for the loss they have experienced. We stand in solidarity with them as they demand answers and justice. We represent organizations with diverse lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender constituencies.” “Many in our community have been targets of bigotry and bias. We have a great deal of experience grappling with the role bias plays in violent crimes against our communities. We well know the stories of young people targeted for violence just because of who they are: Rashawn Brazell, Lawrence King, Ali Forney, Deoni Jones, Brandon White, Matthew Shepard, Angie Zapata, Sean Kennedy and countless others. “Trayvon’s killing is a wakeup call to the enduring cancer of racism and racial profiling. The pain his family continues to endure transcends communities and unites us all. Every person, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity, must be able to walk the streets without fear for their safety. Trayvon’s killing is tragic and the stark reality that racial bias played a role in his death has alarmed our nation. Questions must be asked. Answers must be sought. And justice must be served.” “We join our voices to the chorus of so many others to demand that local and federal authorities find those answers. We stand in solidarity with Trayvon’s family and friends as they seek justice for his killing. In the timeless words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Signatories: CenterLink: The Community of LGBT Centers, Family Equality Council, Freedom to Marry, GLAAD, Human Rights Campaign, Immigration Equality, International Federation of Black Prides, LGBT Progress at the Center for American Progress, Lambda Legal, National Black Justice Coalition, National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), National Coalition for LGBT Health, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, National Stonewall Democrats, Out & Equal Workplace Advocates, Pride at Work, Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE), Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN), The Trevor Project, UNID@S.

Murder of Gay Man by Neo-Nazis Moves Chile Closer to Hate Crimes Law SANTIAGO, CHILE - Prosecutors last week requested murder charges in the brutal attack of a young gay Chilean man who was beaten by his attackers— four alleged neo-Nazis--while they carved swastikas into his body and burned him with lit cigarettes.

DANIEL ZAMUDIO

On March 3, Daniel Zamudio was attacked and badly beaten for over an hour. His four alleged attackers have been jailed and charged with attempted murder. Among the suspects are men who have previous criminal records for attacks against LGBT persons. Zamudio, who was in a vegetative state, finally succumbed to his injuries on March 27, dying more than three weeks after he was attacked. Within hours of his death, prosecutors asked that the charges against the men be upgraded to premeditated murder, which carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. They say that Zamudio’s beating was motivated by homophobia. Chile does not have a hate crimes statute. In 2005, lawmakers proposed anti-discrimination legislation, which was passed by the country’s Senate in November, but has yet to come to a vote in the lower Chamber of Deputies. Conservative organizations say that the measure is a first step toward gay marriage, which Chilean law bans forbids. The legislation would make illegal “any distinction, exclusion or restriction that lacks reasonable justification, committed by agents of the state or individuals, and

that causes the deprivation, disturbance or threatens the legitimate exercise of fundamental rights established by the constitution or in international human rights treaties ratified by Chile.” Zamudio’s death prompted Chile’s president, Sebastian Pinera, to urge passage of the anti-discrimination law. During a state visit to South Korea, Pinera tweeted that the “brutal and cowardly attack of Daniel Zamudio wounds not only his family but all people of good will.”Added Pinera: “His death will not remain unpunished, and reinforces the complete commitment of the government against all arbitrary discrimination and for a more tolerant country.” Rolando Jimenez, the leader of Chile’s Gay Liberation and Integration Movement, called for the suspects to be additionally charged with torture. During a condolence call at the hospital where Zamudio died, Interior Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter, acting as head of state during Pinera’s absence, promised swift action on hate crimes legislation. “We are going to work tirelessly in our Congress to pass our anti-discrimination law as quickly as possible,” Hinzpeter told reporters on March 27. Zamudio’s alleged attackers range in age from 19 to 26. One of the suspects told police that two attackers carved swastikas into the victim with a broken bottle.

Slovenian Voters Reject Gay Adoption LJUBLJANA, SLOVENIA – Voters rejected a measure last week that would have allowed gay couples in Slovenia to adopt children under certain conditions. The legislation, which was drafted by the former Yugoslavian state’s previous liberal government, would have permitted same-sex couples to adopt biological children born to one of the partners, but would have forbidden adoption of a third party’s biological children. In the usually tolerant country, approximately 55 percent of voters in the national referendum rejected the measure. A coalition of religious and conservative Catholic, Muslim, and Serbian Orthodox communities drafted a petition in advance of the referendum, in which they stated, “Marriage and

family are of utmost importance for the development of the human person and society. For this reason, we all have an obligation to protect the values of marriage and of family as a community of a husband and a wife, and children.”

Turkey: Gay Men Require “Pink Certificate” for Military Exemption ANKARA, TURKEY – Reports from the Republic of Turkey paint a humiliating picture of gay men being required to “prove” their homosexuality in order to receive a government-issued “pink certificate” exempting them from the mandatory military service required of all Turkish men. Under the laws of the nation, which was formally founded in 1923, Turkish men can avoid military service for any of three reasons: if they are ill, disabled, or homosexual. Turkish military hospitals define homosexuality as an “illness,” and use as a professional guide about human sexuality an American Psychiatric Association handbook published in 1968. “Doctors are coming under immense pressure from their commanders to diagnose homosexuality, and they obey, even though there really are no diagnostic tools to determine sexual orientation,” a former Turkish military

FLORIDAAGENDA.COM

psychiatrist told the BBC last week. “It is medically impossible, and not at all ethical.” The BBC reported that in order to “diagnose” a man’s sexual orientation, military doctors require Turkish men to answer questions about the most intimate details of their lives, as well as submitting graphic photographs, and other humiliating requirements. The report said that there are no specific guidelines and that individual military physicians have broad subjective latitude in issuing the so-called “pink certificates” denoting homosexuality. Turkey, a secular nation which has a history of struggling with Muslim religious fundamentalism, is still undergoing a struggle for LGBT acceptance. The country’s Istanbul Gay Pride Parade--the only one of its kind in a majority-Muslim country-celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Homosexuality was decriminalized in 1858 by modern Turkey’s predecessor, the Ottoman Empire. But the government refuses to support laws against discrimination, and homophobic remarks from politicians are common. “The social stigma associated with homosexuality in Turkey is such that outside the young and urbanized circles in big cities like Istanbul and Ankara, it is hard to imagine a man declaring that he’s gay when he’s not,” the BBC’s Emre Azizlerli noted. Alabama School District Allows Same-Sex Couples to Attend Prom

MONTGOMERY, AL – Officials with the Tuscaloosa County (Alabama) School System have affirmed the right of gay students to attend prom with same-sex dates, a victory hailed by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which had threatened to sue the school district. School administrators had originally told Elizabeth Garrett, an openly-gay sophomore at Brookwood High School in Tuscaloosa, that she could not take a female to the school prom. “Eventually we got to level of clarity needed to call the whole thing off,” said Sam Wolfe, a staff attorney with the SPLC. “Really the clarity we needed was for the school to recognize that students like Elizabeth can be allowed to go to prom with same-sex dates and wear clothes with messages in support of gay and transgendered people.” In February, Wolfe and the SPLC received a letter from the school district which acknowledges the rights of LGBT students. The attorney for the Tuscaloosa County School System, Ray Ward, confirmed the resolution. “We have a general nondiscrimination policy,” he said. “We have allowed in the past in this school system students to have same-sex dates at prom, so it’s a nonissue.” “I want people to understand that we’re people like everyone else and deserve equal rights,” said Garrett, 16, after her victory. “Especially for teenagers in high school. We should be allowed to be who we are. If you tell people there’s something wrong with who they are, it hurts them. So much.”

that would legalize marriage equality. If the amendment is adopted, the Native American tribe would be the first in Michigan and one of just a few across the nation to legalize gay marriages. Most of the approximately 4,000member tribe lives in Michigan’s northern Lower Peninsula. The proposal is currently being debated during a mandatory public comment period. The tribe’s constitution presently defines marriage as between “one man and one woman.” The amendment requires that at least one partner in a married same-sex couple be a member of the tribe.

New Hampshire Lawmakers Kill Gay Marriage Repeal

MANCHESTER, NH - Lawmakers rejected a bill that would have made New Hampshire’s legislature the first to repeal a marriage equality law. Members of the state House voted 211-116 to defeat the bill, which ended attempts by the chamber’s new GOP majority to overturn the Granite State’s two-yearold same-sex marriage law. “They blew it,” said Craig Stowell, co-chair of Standing Up For New Hampshire Families, citing conservatives’ efforts to undo the existing gay marriage law. “This was supposed to be the most favorable legislative climate for repeal and they couldn’t even get a majority.” Republicans hold a 189-seat majority in the state’s House of Representatives. The Republican-backed measure would have ended same-sex marriage effective March 2013, and replaced it with a previous civil unions law that had been in effect in 2008 and 2009. Under the bill, those same-sex marriages that were made prior to the repeal taking effect would have remained valid. State Rep. David Welch, a Republican, said he had been against same-sex marriage, but that the time for repeal had come and gone. “The Legislature has given certain rights to members of our community and now we’re being asked to take them away,” said Welch. Another Republican, state Rep. Warren Groen, supported the bill because, in his view, marriage equality is a gateway to legalizing polygamy and other non-traditional lifestyles. “We are indeed on a slippery slope,” Groen said. H

and connect African-American spokespeople for marriage; develop a media campaign around their objections to gay marriage as a civil right; provoke the gay marriage base into responding by denouncing these spokesmen and women as bigots.” “The strategic goal of this project is to drive a wedge between gays and blacks--two key Democratic constituencies,” reads another of the NOM memoranda. The memo also lays out a social engineering scheme to “interrupt” the assimilation of Hispanics into mainstream American culture as a means of fracturing Latino support for marriage equality. “Will the process of assimilation to the dominant Anglo culture lead Hispanics to abandon traditional family values?” posited one of the courtreleased NOM memos. “We must interrupt this process of assimilation by making support for marriage a key badge of Latino identity,” adding that this would become for Hispanic Americans “a symbol of resistance to inappropriate assimilation.” NOM’s memos also outline a strategy in which President Barack Obama would be depicted as a “social radical.” The documents and memoranda were unsealed by Maine court officials as part of a legal challenge to the state’s financial disclosure laws. The courts must also determine whether NOM, the nation’s largest opponent of samesex marriage, must release the names of donors to its 2009 campaign that successfully banned gay marriage in the Pine Tree State. “With the veil lifted, Americans everywhere can now see the ugly politics that the National Organization for Marriage traffics in every day,” said Joe Solmonese, the president of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC),

the nation’s largest LGBT rights organization. “While loving gay and lesbian couples seek to make lifelong commitments, NOM plays racial politics, tries to hide donors and makes up lies about people of faith,” added Solmonese. Julian Bond, the former chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) also denounced NOM’s strategy. “NOM’s underhanded attempts to divide will not succeed if Black Americans remember their own history of discrimination,” condemned Bond, a veteran of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. “Pitting bigotry’s victims against other victims is reprehensible; the defenders of justice must stand together.” Brian Brown, the president of NOM, refused to back down from his organization’s opposition to marriage equality for all Americans. “Gay marriage advocates have attempted to portray same-sex marriage as a civil right,” said Brown. “This claim is patently false.” “Gay marriage is not a civil right, and we will continue to point this out in written materials such as those released in Maine,” Brown added. “We proudly bring together people of different races, creeds and colors to fight for our most fundamental institution: marriage.” Same-sex marriage supporters have gotten the issue placed on Maine’s November ballot. Although the court-released documents contain detailed information on NOM’s Maine campaign, they do not list the names of financial donors, among them three who contributed over one million dollars each in 2009 to defeat gay marriage. HERE COME THE JUDGE By CLIFF DUNN

FOUNDER MULTIMEDIA PLATFORMS BOBBY BLAIR – CEO / MANAGING PARTNER

“And when Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he did to the people, he said… Thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers … And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.” Book of Exodus, 18:14-26

T

here are days when the world seems turned on its head. As I began to write this column, it occurred to me that one of the staples of a presidential election season is the traditional condemnation by one GOP candidate or another about the evils of “judicial activism.” This is a phrase often used in reaction to a ruling that has been handed down by an “activist judge,” which is defined as a jurist who rules against a position held near and dear to the heart of the individual opinionator. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Judicial Circuit—based in the hated San Francisco, the very Land of Fruits and Nuts to the Judicially-Righteous Right— is a familiar and comforting target. Things looked promising in 2010. That year, we got a taste of the hysteria that accompanies the accusations of judicial activism when Iowa voters removed three state Supreme Court justices who helped legalize marriage equality in the Hawkeye State. During a vicious campaign, the chief opponent of gay marriage in Iowa screamed accusations of “blatant judicial activism by the Iowa Supreme Court.” “The court legislated from the bench, they governed from the bench, and they even attempted to amend our constitution from the bench as they declared Iowa a ‘Same-Sex’ marriage state,” complained Bob Vander Plaats, an unsuccessful Republican candidate for governor and the founder of Iowa For Freedom. The vote marked the first time that a member of the Iowa Supreme Court was rejected by voters since the state’s current system began in 1962. Since the successful demonization of the three recalled justices (who will be honored in May with receipt of the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award) things seemed quiet—until

this week. In something that could have easily appeared in the Bizarro Times, it was a DEMOCRATIC president this week accusing an “unelected” body of judges of “judicial activism,” and a REPUBLICAN Congress chiding him for stirring up the fringe with hyperbole and incendiary rhetoric. Specifically, Republicans accused President Obama of attempting to “intimidate” the Supreme Court by suggesting that a ruling against “Obamacare” would be “judicial activism.” Using language taken straight out of the GOP playbook, the president warned the “unelected” justices against legislating from the bench. Completing the topsy-turvy imagery, it was a Republican U.S. Senator, Utah’s Orrin Hatch, who said it is a “fantasy” to consider “every law you like [to be] constitutional and every Supreme Court decision you don’t [to be] ‘activist.’” “Judicial activism or restraint is not measured by which side wins but by whether the Court correctly applied the law,” said Hatch. He is right, of course: he’s just making the opposing team’s argument. My quarrel with the strict constructionist set (those who argue for the narrowest interpretation of the law by judges) is that their arguments often appeal to our meaner natures, and are often shrouded in language that seems to cloak disdain for common sense. The Limbaughs and Hannitys (and now apparently, Obamas) of the world who declaim against judges who legislate from the bench are ignoring the very history of the office. As any good religious conservative can tell you, it was Moses the Lawgiver who established the office of judge, as described in the Biblical Book of Exodus. The acts of the Old Testament’s more famous jurists are detailed in the

Books of Judges (I and II) and Samuel (I and II). They all paint a portrait of “activist” arbitrators, men who brought to bear the collected wisdom of a lifetime to help decide upon matters that would impact many lives and futures: the sort of judge to make Rick Santorum’s (or Rick Scott’s) blood freeze. Aside from its Biblical antecedents, the tradition of “judicial activism” is as old as the Republic itself. America’s longest-serving Chief Justice, John Marshall, played a dominant role in the development of the nation’s legal system during his 34 years on the high court (1801-1835). Marshall championed the principle that the courts are obligated to exercise judicial review, including discarding laws that violate the Constitution. In doing so, he cemented the judiciary’s position as an independent branch of the government. Many of the people who throw the “activist judge” label around are really afraid of judges whose sense of “justice” may have been defined beyond the narrow context of JudeoChristianity. As recent rulings against the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California’s Proposition 8 have shown, Republican-appointed federal judges are just as susceptible to the “activist” gene as are those appointed by Democratic presidents. As Orrin Hatch noted, activist judges are typically found in the eye of the beholder. Justice Hugo Black (served 1937-1971) argued that the Constitution’s language that Congress shall make no law [emphasis added] says just that: “no law” means “no exceptions.” Ironically, Black’s historic legacy is as a judicial activist. WASHINGTON STATE TAKES ON UNDERAGE ESCORT WEB SITES

APRIL 5, 2012 H 9

BOOK REVIEW:

GYPSEY BOY: MY LIFE IN THE SECRET WORLD OF THE ROMANY GYPSIES By TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER

SEATTLE, WA – On March 29, Washington State Gov. Christine Gregoire signed into law a measure that requires Web sites that operate within the state to provide documentation that all escorts who are advertised are at least 18 years old. The law is the first of its kind in the nation. Child advocates applaud the passage of the legislation. Other states are likewise considering similar legislation in an effort to curb child sex trafficking. But there are supporters of the law who remain concerned about the possibility of challenges on the grounds of limiting free speech, and some question how effective the measure will be. Andrea Powell, who heads FAIR Girls, an advocacy group for girls who have been sexually exploited, told the New York Times “I don’t think it’s going to be the solution they’re looking for. It might reduce the volume of ads, but the ultimate goal is to shut that section [of escort magazines] down. There’s no way with an escort section that pimps aren’t going to post there. They’re not going to just stop posting on Backpage[.com].” Backpage.com became the largest mainstream platform for escort ads after public pressure prompted Craigslist.com to remove its escort listings in 2010. Craigslist had been criticized by advocacy groups and by state attorneys general who said the site wasn’t doing enough to help combat sex trafficking and other sex crimes. On Aug. 24, 2010 attorneys general from 17 states wrote to Craigslist demanding that it close the sex-related section of its site, and company officials complied. But Backpage.com, which is owned by Village Voice Media Holdings-which also owns the New Times-plans to keep its escort listings, and may challenge the Washington law in court. “There’s going to have to be a challenge to it,” said Liz McDougall, Village Voice Media Holdings’

general counsel. “Otherwise it would effectively shut down an enormous portion of the Internet that currently permits third-party content.” McDougall was also the private attorney whose firm represented Craigslist during its 2010 showdown with state officials. Critics say the new law might have an impact on Web sites and chat room forums that don’t pertain to escorts but where adult content may be posted. After several high-profile sex trafficking cases in the 1990s, in 2003 Washington lawmakers passed the first state law that criminalizes human trafficking. Legislators increased the prison sentences for child sextraffickers in 2010. Last year, Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn pulled the city’s advertising from The Seattle Weekly, a publication that is owned by the Village Voice. Washington State’s attorney general, Rob McKenna, a candidate for governor and the president of the National Association of Attorneys General, made child sex trafficking a highlight of the Association’s agenda when it met in Seattle last month. McKenna wants Congress to amend the 1996 Communications Decency Act, which critics say provides loopholes for traffickers that were not anticipated when the federal law was passed nearly two decades ago. That law could make it easier to challenge Washington’s law—and those passed by other states—in court. State Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles, the sponsor of the new law, said she and others spent more than a year working on language that the American Civil Liberties Union and some newspaper groups eventually supported. “We provide the means for them to have an affirmative defense,” Ms. Kohl-Welles said of the escort sites. “That is, if they can document they verified the age of the individual being portrayed. We think that’ll do it.” . H

“Gypsy Boy: My Life in the Secret World of the Romany Gypsies” by Mikey Walsh c.2012, Thomas Dunne Books $24.99 U.S. & Canada 288 pages When you were very small, there wasn’t much you wanted. Clean diapers, a cuddle, and food made the shortlist early on. Stuffed animals were slowly added, then siblings, books, and anything upon which you could climb. By the time you hit school age, your wants became more complicated. You wanted to be somehow famous. You wanted to stay up late, snack before dinner, and possess that cool toy you saw on TV. You wanted to grow up fast. Author Mikey Walsh wanted those things, too, but he never wanted to become a fighter. As you’ll see in his memoir, “Gypsy Boy,” his father had other ideas. Mikey Walsh’s father was “fiercely determined” to have a son. In Romany culture, having a male child was everything – even more so for the Walsh family, which was known for generations of “manly” men who were good with their fists. So, even though his mother was told that her heart condition precluded having a second child, Mikey followed his sister in succession. Upon the happy event, Mr. Walsh hung golden boxing gloves around his newborn son’s neck. Growing up, Mikey loved the dramatic. He and his older sister, Frankie, enjoyed playing dress-up and pretending games. They loved watching TV and, largely unsupervised, they played outside with their cousins, who lived on the same compound. It was an idyllic early childhood, but at age four, Mikey’s destiny caught up with him. His father decided that it was time to start fight training, and the best way to do it was to beat the

boy. His disgust at Mikey’s cries meant more punches. By age seven, Mikey was being “hidden” in school by his mother, which was an unusual move. Gypsies were mostly forbidden to mingle with “Gorgias,” and sending a child to a Gorgia school was scandalous. It was her way of keeping Mikey safe, however, and it gave him a chance at an education, which was something she didn’t have. Yet, the beatings continued: always daily, sometimes more. By age 13, Mikey realized that he was gay which, he knew, would enrage his father. He also knew that he needed to escape before it cost him his life. Stunned, simply nowhere-to-go-stunned: that was me at the end of reading this book. Pseudonymous author Mikey Walsh lulls his readers into first believing that they’re reading a droll memoir filled with quirky relatives and a secret world about which few have dared to write. Walsh busts open a few myths about Romany culture, pokes gentle fun at his family, and makes us laugh out loud while he’s doing it. But much like a dog that can’t be trusted, “Gypsy Boy” turns quick and bites. Walsh takes the laughter and, two pages later, spins it with horror and a painful emotionlessness that only serves to underscore the brutality he describes, which ultimately leads to an end that shimmers like a tambourine. Published in Europe three years ago, “Gypsy Boy” is new stateside and absolutely can’t be missed. If you’re up for a funny, brutal, sharp memoir, this is the book you want. Q -POINT: A DEATH WISH?

PARKING IN THE SHOPPES OF WILTON MANORS:

W

By ALEX VAUGHN

e have all been out on a Thursday night: the Drive comes alive, it’s almost the weekend, and it’s time to let your hair down. You pull into the vast parking lot and rush in to meet your friends. You have a couple of drinks, socialize, and when you look out over the car park and see all the guys around, you can’t help but think “wow, how lucky am I to live in--or at the very least visit--Greater Fort Lauderdale and to have somewhere like The Shoppes of Wilton Manors to use as a base!” Well, yes you are, if you aren’t towed. The signs are posted: the parking spaces in The Shoppes are reserved for patrons of the businesses. A bit extreme, as it is the center of Wilton Manors life, but ok, fair enough. Many of the establishments on and off the Drive have their own reserved-for-valet parking spaces. The signs are clear: you can’t leave your car unattended unless you are patronizing one of

the businesses. What they don’t tell you is if you break the rules, you will be sent somewhere in which you could be killed. You can imagine my utter shock to find that after a great evening catching up with friends, our car had been towed. There was no help or explanation offered, other than to “call the number on the sign,” which we did. Although told over the phone that we needed to pay to pick it up, at no point was it mentioned that they only accept cash-do most people routinely walk around with over $100 in cash on them? I know it sounds awfully dramatic, but if you get towed, say “goodbye” to the safety of Wilton Manors, to the ability to be yourself, and to feel safe and secure. In fact, say “hello” to the worst district in Fort Lauderdale, the area around 1800 West Sunrise Blvd., which is where your car will be towed. West Sunrise Blvd. is notorious for a few things: it is where a spring breaker last month was beaten to within an inch of his life for possession of his lap-

top; it also, as of last month, has the area’s highest rate of homicides; and it is where I found myself last Thursday night. We took a cab to the tow yard, and immediately knew we were in the wrong neighborhood. Since there was no ATM nearby, we walked through what I can only describe as a frightening, dangerous area to a gas station where we got cash. On our walk back--nervous, frightened and trying to be as aware as possible--a mugger snatched my partner’s $2,000 gold chain from his neck. The police officer who took our report was very clear that no one should ever be in that area at night, under any circumstances. We learned that the hard way. I couldn’t agree more with parking rules: you park only where you visit. But if you break that rule, should you be forced to take your life into your hands? Many would argue to go during the day to pick up your car if it’s towed, but it was implied to us they would impose extra charges for

holding it overnight. For gay men, one benefit of living in or visiting Wilton Manors is the element of safety: the towing policy violates that. There is an empty lot behind The Shoppes with some 30-odd spaces: would it not make more sense to tow the cars back there, and simply raise the towing fee? There would be people who argue the fee will be too high, but right now the fee could end up costing you your life. Attention has been called to the towing policy before, but having experienced firsthand the unbridled danger of what it means to be towed action must now be taken—before someone in the community gets hurt or killed. Editor’s Note: At press time, Rivercrest Realty Investors, the owners of The Shoppes of Wilton Manors, have stopped utilizing the services of EMS Towing. H

If You’re So Hot, Why Don’t You Turn Me On? By ARLEN KEITH LEIGHT, PH.D.

H

e’s gorgeous. Tall, thick dark hair, beautiful smile, great body. Everyone thinks he is so hot, and he’s totally into you. You think he’s great looking and a nice guy. In bed he can’t get enough of you, but you’re just not turned on. Your friends think you’re crazy for wanting to stop seeing him. Let’s face it, he may be Mr. GQ, but he’s not for you. He’s simply not in your “Sexual Template.” This is a concept in sexology described by renowned clinician Dr. William Granzig. Sexual Template is defined as the sum total of all erotic characteristics in others that create passion and desire for you. It first and foremost includes the gender of potential sexual partners. You are sexually interested in men, women, or both. The Template expands to include physical characteristics like height, weight, physique, and skin color. It includes demeanor such as attitude, voice, accents, masculinity-femininity, and gait. It includes body modifications such as tattoos, piercings, shape/style of beard, etc. Status, power, money, religion, culture, and race can also be a sexual turn-on. Realize that we are not talking about what or who would make the “perfect partner,” but rather who creates a sense of erotic desire in each of us. Age is also an important factor in the Template, with most preferring others within five years of our own age. However, some people only get turned on by young lovers, still others only by lovers over 70. Often May-December relationships are judged as being about money. This is actually less likely than a simple Sexual Template match. The Sexual Template is different for everyone. It may also contain inconsistencies. You may be turned on by black men as well as by blonds. The Template expands with age, so you will actually be erotically drawn to more “types” as you get older. The characteristics you

add to your Template are added unconsciously. Just like you did not choose what gender turns you on, you did not choose the other aspects of your Template. And—like being gay—once a characteristic is in the Template you cannot consciously remove it: it is there for life. There may be a shift in priorities, but if you were interested in men with beards when you were 18 you will be interested in men with beards when you’re 80. The implications of Sexual Template are vital for making good decisions about partnering. Just because you really like “Joe”and everyone else in the world thinks “Joe” is gorgeous, if “Joe” is not in your Template, sex is unlikely to get better with time. Another example: if you became sexually passionate about “Tom” when he had a beard and was slim, and now “Tom” is clean-shaven and heavy-set, sex may be difficult. You may need to talk to “Tom” about growing a new beard and losing some weight. This is not being petty: this is a realistic part of human sexual behavior. Learning to communicate about changes in sexual desire is an important aspect of an intimate connection. Another important aspect of sexual template is understanding rejection. When you are rejected as a potential sex partner, understand that this is not about you. The rejection is directly related to the Sexual Template of the person doing the rejecting. And remember: he does not have control over his Template. So, if you find yourself with the hottest guy in town, but he’s just not “doing it” for you, don’t fret: just move on. He’s simply not in your Sexual Template. H Arlen Keith Leight, PhD is a Licensed Psychotherapist and Board Certified Sex Therapist in private practice on the drive in Wilton Manors. STYLE BRIEF

FLORIDAAGENDA.COM

YOUR STYLE NEWS BRIEFING: LGBT COLLEGE STUDENTS DRINK MORE; SELF-HELPER COMMITS SUICIDE LGBT College Students May Be at Higher Risk of Alcohol Addiction ANN ARBOR, MI – A new study from University of Michigan School of Social Work shows that LGBT college students who have experienced at least mild discrimination are at a greater risk for alcohol addiction compared to their straight counterparts.

The study authors also concluded that if heightened national awareness about the consequences of bullying and homophobic discrimination results in a nationwide decrease in bullying, it could also have a long-term reduction in the number of LGBT alcohol abuse cases. Also beneficial would be minimizing more subtle forms of discrimination at their sources, the researchers wrote. “Addressing disrespectful, discourteous behaviors on campus may seem unimportant compared to addressing overt discrimination and violence, but this study’s results suggest otherwise,” said Michael Woodford, assistant professor of social work at University of Michigan and the lead author of the findings, which appear in the current issue of the journal Substance Abuse and Rehabilitation. The study is the first to examine how witnessing mistreatment can impact a college student’s well-being. The researchers concluded that being present in an environment where others are being ill-treated can negatively affect

one’s own well-being. Regardless of one’s sexual orientation, the study found that witnessing hostile or uncivil behavior can increase an individual’s likelihood of developing a drinking problem. The study authors surveyed almost 2,500 college students: more than 400 self-identified sexual minorities completed the anonymous online survey about campus attitudes and the overall environment. Students answered if they experienced mistreatment within the last year, and if they witnessed or knew of others who had been mistreated. They also answered questions about their drinking and drug use during the past semester. The data also found that sexual minority students are significantly more likely to report being the target of incivility and hostility, and to witness hostility and that they are significantly more likely to report alcohol or drug use than heterosexual students. Woodford and the other study authors suggest that college campuses should establish policies and institution-wide initiatives that address the need for safe environments and mutual respect among all students, LGBT and otherwise. “Obviously, counseling staff and other health professionals will need to assess for various types of mistreatment, and work with students to strengthen healthy coping mechanisms,” said Woodford.

Gay Self-Help Author’s Suicide Stuns Friends, Colleagues NEW YORK, NY – The suicide of a popular gay New York City therapist received a sad post-script last month when his publisher announced what the late Bob Bergeron had already predicted: there would be no release of his selfwritten self-help guide, “The Right Side of Forty: The Complete Guide to Happiness for Gay Men at Midlife and Beyond.” Bergeron’s suicide on or around New Year’s Day shocked his friends and colleagues. He had built a popular and busy private mental health practice which specialized in treating wealthy gay men. In addition, Bergeron, 49, had spent time on the lecture circuit, booking motivational speaking tours in Gay Pride centers in Chicago and Los Angeles. “The Right Side of Forty” was scheduled for a February

Bob Bergeron release by his publisher, Magnus Books, a New York City-based firm specializing in LGBT-interest titles. “I’ve got a concise picture of what being over 40 is about and it’s a great perspective filled with happiness, feeling sexy, possessing comfort relating to other men and taking good care of ourselves,” Bergeron wrote on his Web site. “This picture will get you results that flourish long-term.” Through his book, he hoped to help gay men achieve turning gray with grace. His own lifestyle bespoke of his personal qualifications to opine on the subject: a Manhattan condo, regular trips to Europe, model good looks, and an accepting family. But on Jan. 5, Bergeron was found in his apartment by his ex-partner, dead with a plastic bag tied over his head. Bergeron’s death was ruled suicide due to asphyxiation.

The scene that Bergeron arranged just before he took his own life spoke of the organized manner in which he conducted his life, at least publicly: he had placed a pile of folders upon the kitchen island countertop, with papers that contained specific instructions for the disposal of his personal finances. Next to this, he placed his book’s title page: it was on this that he penned his suicide note, in which he told friends and family that he loved them but that he was “done.” Next to a drawn arrow that pointed to the name of the book (“The Right Side of Forty: The Complete Guide to Happiness for Gay Men at Midlife and Beyond”), Bergeron had written, “It’s a lie based on bad information.” According to Don Weise, his publisher at Magnus Books, Bergeron took over a year to draft and rewrite the book. “There would be pages just covered in blue scribble,” Weise told the New York Times. “Every single sentence was rewritten. I thought he was going to have a nervous breakdown.” Bergeron, who held a master’s in social work from Hunter College at City University of New York, finished the manuscript sometime around Christmas 2011. His family and friends say that Bergeron had become “anxious” about the scheduled February release of the book. His mother said that Bergeron believed he had written too much about online “dating” and “hookups,” and had not spent enough time writing about newer technologies such as the Grindr phone app. Bergeron became increasingly convinced that his work would be ridiculed as out-of-date before it hit the shelves. “It was easily fixable,” said his mother, Athena Bergeron, who last spoke with him on New Year’s Eve 2011. “I figured they could easily go back in and change that.” Magnus Books announced that under the circumstances, they were cancelling publication of Bergeron’s book. While trying to make sense of their loss, his still disconsolate friends and family recall the encouraging words Bergeron had posted on his professional Web site: “When I learned new ways to relate with gay men, I returned to the confidence of my thirties but with less cockiness and more civility. As a result while quickly approaching the right side of fifty, I can say with deep sincerity: this is the best time of my life!”

“THE WRATH OF THE TITANS” How Bad Can A Movie Be? By WARREN DAY

I

f you’ve ever wondered just how bad a big studio movie can be, then “The Wrath of the Titans” provides an excruciating answer: cringe-inducing dialogue, blurry and unimaginative special effects, actions sequences without wit or originality, characters you know little about and about whom you care even less, costumes from Wal-Mart, and acting that would embarrass a small town church pageant. To put it simply and accurately: EEEAAAGH! For over 3,000 years, Greek mythology has been a rich source of stories and inspiration for some of the world’s greatest literature: “The Odyssey” and “The Iliad” by Homer, the works of Sappho, Euripides, Sophocles, and others of classical antiquity. Along with some other mythologies—notably Norse—it’s also been a life spring for many of the comic book heroes who’ve provided kids of all ages with a modern mythology of their own. However “Wrath” has about as much to do with Greek mythology as reality TV shows have to do with actual reality. It has neither the clever storytelling of myth nor the energized fantasy of comic books. Instead, it’s a kind of second-rate video game version of a movie where the filmmakers mistake people running around for momentum, assuming that if it looks like a lot is going on the audience will think a lot is going on. Not so in this case, where the main character, Perseus, is merely thrown into one chaotic situation after another without any attempt at, or semblance of, coherence. The movie may be in 3D, but its plot and characters are one-dimensional—at best. “Wrath” is a sequel to the remake of “Clash of the Titans” that came out two years ago. “Clash” made a lot of cash: hence “The Wrath” is upon us. Ten years have passed in the storyline since “Clash,” which provides an excuse to give Perseus a young son to be used as a pawn in the battles between the gods. Sam Worthington returns to play Perseus, although “walks through” is probably a better description than “plays,” because he has none of the humor or self-awareness that made Arnold Schwarzenegger so entertaining in similar roles. Worthington is in danger of being his generation’s version of the promising and attractive actor who gets cast in the leading roles of major films before he’s had a chance to establish true star-quality. Although central to “Avatar” in 2009 as well as 2010’s “Clash of the

Titans,” he’s easily over-shadowed by “Wrath’s” constant barrage of special effects. Liam Neeson returns to the role of Zeus he originated in “Clash:” the 59-year-old Belfast-native seems to be vying with Nicolas Cage for the record of appearing in the most forgettable movies in a row. The color palette in “Wrath” is brown (yes, just brown) and most scenes are filled with dust, which may be the filmmakers’ way of trying to hide just how poorly executed are the movie’s computer generated effects. The best writer of them all, William Shakespeare, could have been penning the best review of this amateurishlywritten film 500 years ago when he wrote: “It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, and signifying nothing.”

MOSCOW The Underground Is More than a Subway By ROBERT ELIAS DEATON

I

t is tough being gay in Moscow. Up until 1993, homosexuality was deemed a crime in Russia; and it was only thirteen years ago that it was removed from a list of mental illnesses. As the world at large has embraced tolerance, and is increasingly accepting same-sex marriage, Russia has moved in the opposite direction, sending gays underground to meet and greet. Attempts to organize Gay Pride parades in Moscow have been labeled “satanic” and met with police brutality. Last week, some 400 miles away, Saint Petersburg enacted a law that makes it illegal for anyone to disseminate “homosexual propaganda” among minors, or to suggest that homosexual relations are a normal form of human interaction on a par with heterosexual relations. Moscow has a similar law on the table. Even so, this city of 11,000,000 people has a wealth of historical sites and attractions that are must-see stops should you ever make it to the Russian capital. You will need a visa to visit Moscow, or any other place in Russia. Your hotel can expedite these arrangements. If the sugar daddy recently cashed in his Apple stock or made a killing in Google, choose the Ritz Carlton Moscow (Tverskaya Street 3). Among the features of this 11-story architectural monument are a fully functioning spa including indoor

Komsomolskaya

Novoslobodskaya

pool, and just-hip-enough rooftop lounge called O2. You’ll feel right at home, instantly. If money is tight, consider the Petrovka Loft Hotel (Petrovka 17/2, 41), housed in a Stalinesque building that once served as communal apartments in the old days. A complete gutting and remodeling changed all that a few years back, leaving a dozen low-budget yet elegantly designed private rooms. Both places are near Red Square (Red Square, 1), Saint Basil’s Cathedral (Red Square, 4) and close by the Bolshoi Ballet (Teatralnaya pl 1), now in its

236th season—tourist no-fail-zones all. For art, we highly recommend the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture (19A Obraztsova Street; 7-495645-0520; garageccc.com/eng) where large modern works of art have been assembled in what was a former bus depot designed by the Constructivist architect Konstantin Melnikov in the 20s. There are 96 parks in the city (as well as 18 public gardens), so there is no shortage of green space, which becomes multi-colored in the spring and summer. Our favorite is the Central Park of Culture and Leisure, popularly

known as Gorky Park (on the bank of the Moskva, just southwest of the city center). Once the site of aging amusement rides and fast-food stands, Central Park of Culture and Leisure has been transformed in the past year and become the place to go for outdoor aerobics, yoga, and all things physical— including roller and ice skating. It’s the perfect spot to see Russian men, straight and gay, in various degrees of undress. Remember: look but don’t touch. Do not miss the Moscow Metro. It is not only the perfect way to get from place to place, but its stations also provide a quick tour of marble, crystal and limestone craftsmanship. On the Ring Line, you’ll be amazed at the Novoslobodskaya and Komsomolskaya stops. On the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line, don’t miss the Park Pobedy station—the world’s deepest, buried 308 feet underground and with the longest escalator in town. Now if we could just get the Russians to lighten up on the anti-gay rules. The vodka wouldn’t taste any better, but all those gymnastic and ballet stars certainly would! P.S. Goluboi, the Russian word for “blue,” also translates as “gay.” Remember where you heard if first. Robert Elias Deaton is a world-traveling epicure who enjoys the finer things in life.

J. Alexander’s

A Chain Restaurant with Home-Cooked Taste Buds By RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN A funny thing happened on the way to J. Alexander’s—the outlet of the chain restaurant that’s been a fixture on Federal Highway for decades. My houseguest, who apparently is a J. Alexander’s aficionado of sorts, had just traveled into town from Tennessee, where the restaurant has its corporate headquarters and where he had “the worst piece of prime rib that ever once grazed.” I heard this tale of his disenfranchised taste buds at least three times before I finally offered to take him to our local branch, hoping that he might find succor for his continuing disappointment. Admittedly, we approached the place on a Saturday night—a time when J. Alexander’s normally is SRO. Perhaps it was the “hurt-puppy” look on his face, but we were seated immediately upon entering. Having eaten in this particular establishment with some regularity over the years, I knew the drill and kept pace as my guest dismissed a glance at the menu and ordered a drink (Manhattan, no rocks, double cherry), an appetizer (fire-grilled artichoke with herb butter rémoulade) and an entrée (the aforementioned slow-roasted prime rib with smashed potatoes). I rallied with tap water (plenty of ice), a bowl of soup (chicken pasta), and a veggie burger (made in-house and topped with Monterey jack cheese)—all

ordered as one long sentence. My houseguest was not about to get one up on me. He had downed his Manhattan and ordered another in the ten-minutes it took for his artichoke to arrive—long enough apparently for the

to feed four mortal men. Only then did he push his plate away from his expanding stomach and said, “Now that’s prime rib.” This was a good thing. For the record, my veggie burger was as moist and flavorful as it usually is, with

table. Not however before my guest ordered a “small taste” of Key Lime pie ($8), muttering something that sounded like “well this is Florida, after all,”

“what appeared to be half a cow drizzled with au jus—so big was his prime rib. ” liquor to set in and his voice to rise just loud enough to be heard several booths away. Fortunately, it was praise he was spouting, as he dipped the delicate artichoke leaves into the rémoulade and smiled as he savored the succulent flavor. He barely had time to wipe the butter from his lips, when a second server, new to the table, delivered my burger and what appeared to be half a cow drizzled with au jus—so big was his prime rib. Any suspicions that he may have harbored disappeared as his knife cut through the healthy portion of beef like the proverbial warm butter. I would like to say that he immediately hailed “Hallelujah” upon first bite, but such was not the case. In fact, he said nothing until he had consumed nearly three-quarters of the serving—which, you may remember, was large enough

my side order of string fries perfectly crisp and seasoned as if from a Tex-Mex ranch house. So too the soup, which was far too generous in size to consume. under his breath. When he finally slid from the booth, doggie bag in hand, he turned to look at the open-beam ceiling and attractive art hanging along one brick wall. “Now this is everything J. Alexander’s should be,” he said. Tell them Guy Magazine said so. The prime rib is priced at $26, which was a bargain compared to the pricey $12 artichoke appetizer. The homemade veggie burger runs $12 as well, with the bowl of soup adding another $6 to our tally-which, I’m happy to report, my houseguest paid when yet a third server delivered it to the

DIETING OR EATING DISORDER? The Life You Save May Be Your Own By ANDY KRESS

M

ost American try a fad diet sometime in their lives; a few million even have eating disorders. They come in all shapes and sizes, and often are not even actually fat. Rather, they perceive themselves to be. Fad diets, by their very nature, don’t last. These crash diets help people get quick results. Yet shortly after any quick weight loss, the body hits a plateau. Often these diets deny us certain nutrients the body needs for optimum functioning. Over an extended period of time, this can create major deficiencies, which can take a lengthy time to reverse. Worse still, while stuck at this plateau, most people give up and go back to their old eating habits, which created the problem in the first place. The cure for a dieting plateau is to incorporate more natural and raw foods into your eating regimen. Eating smaller portions of these healthy foods more often throughout the day will deliver better gains while dieting and trying to lose weight. Add light to moderate exercise throughout the week and see even better results. Next, incorporate a variety of other fruits, vegetables, and proteins high in vitamins and minerals along with plenty of water. Hydrate to excess and savor the results, and do for 90% of your week. For the remaining 10% of the time, get out of the house, living and enjoying all the things you love to eat and drink. Life is short; do not deny yourself of anything. Note: There is a huge difference between a diet and an eating disorder. Eating disorders are not within your control; dieting is. These disorders come from many different outside influences, including peer pressure to be thick or thin. The most common eating disorder is anorexia nervosa, a lack of appetite or eating. This is common enough to affect one in every 100 people. Although it occurs primarily in young girls and women, five percent of anorexics are men. Gymnastics, ballet and modeling are consistent culprits that feed the anorexic disorder, particularly in young women. If you notice someone in these recreations who is consistently not eating, be aware they may have anorexia nervosa. This is a serious condition from which it takes years to recover.

A diet full of fruits, veggies, & protein is essential

Bulimia is the second most common eating disorder. Most bulimics have no problem eating. Bulimics can consume 1000 to as much as 5,000 calories per setting. Often these calories come from sweets and sugars. Most times, remorseful of binging on so many calories, the bulimic will purge all of the foods consumed. This is very hard on the body, with stomach rotting out the teeth and esophagus by stripping the enamel and lining away. In time, the consistent lack of calories and repeated vomiting take its toll much like anorexia nervosa. Again, this takes years of slow recovery to overcome. Be aware if your friends binge on sweets or there is a constant smell of vomit in the bathroom. Obesity is quickly making its way to the most popular disorder, by affecting millions of people in the United States. These people simply cannot stop eating large portions of unhealthy foods. This is one disorder that is usually taught. All children learn eating patterns from adults, usually parents, who teach these habits and accompanying poor nutrition through eating rituals of their own. Some adopt overeating to subdue emotional distress. These people create many deleterious health conditions and severely shorten their lives. A balanced diet and portion control is the simple cure to this disease. Be aware of your friends’ and family’s eating habits, and allow them to see yours. The life you save may be your own.
