FEDERAL AUTHORITIES DETAIL COMPLAINT AGAINST OAKLAND PARK MAN CHARGED IN

$11 MILLION PONZI SCHEME

“Rainmaker” alleged to have Bilked Million$ from Wilton Manors Residents By RORY BARBAROSA

MIAMI – The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has released a list of charges against a Broward County man accused of running a Ponzi scheme that bilked as much as $11 million from gay victims, many of them retirees living in Wilton Manors. Federal authorities arrested fugitive George Elia— who had moved from Florida to Cyprus after his alleged scam was revealed— on March 27 as he arrived in Las Vegas, Nevada on a flight from London. FBI agents arrested Elia on criminal charges of wire fraud stemming from alleged false claims he made to his investors about his track record as a daytrader, and his doctoring of statements to reflect inflated profits. In reality,

his trading resulted in marginal gains or losses. The SEC’s complaint says that Elia violated antifraud sections of securities laws and that he aided and abetted these violations by companies of which he was in charge. He faces a maximum 20 years in prison. In addition to the criminal charges against him, the SEC sued Elia and his company, International Consultants & Investment Group (ICIG), along with other businesses connected to him— 212 Entertainment Club, Inc. and Elia Realty—as relief defendants in federal civil court, alleging “affinity fraud,” a legal term for investment frauds that prey upon certain groups, including the members of religious or ethnic communities, language minorities, ‘PONZI SCHEME’ continues on Page 8

REP. ALLEN WEST (R-FL)

WASHINGTON, DC – A subtle cultural shift may be underway on the part of the highest ranks of the Republican Party and their unofficial but no less powerful greybeards, with GOP Congressional leaders blocking passage of a number of measures that would have strengthened the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the federal ban on same-sex marriage. Even cultural conservatives including Rep. Allen West (R-FL), whose

district encompasses portions of Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors, have made drastic shifts in their on-record statements. Last week on CNN, West— whose previous statements warned that marriage equality would be a signpost of the decay of society and that homosexuality is a “choice”— said “I want my daughters to have the opportunities that I had, and that’s

LOCAL NEWS IN BRIEF Congressman Allen West Tells CNN that Gay Marriage Issue is Not “That Important”

ALLEN WEST CAUGHT OFF GUARD

FORT LAUDERDALE – What a difference a year has made to the policy positions of Rep. Allen West (R-FL), at least in terms of marriage equality. On Friday, April 6, the freshman congressman, who represents Florida’s 22nd Congressional District—which includes parts of Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors—was asked by CNN host Kyra Phillips if he believed that gay marriage was an issue for the federal government to decide. West, a social conservative who is seeking to win the newly created 18th Congressional District seat created by the redistricting that followed the 2010 U.S. Census, surprised the news anchor by sidestepping the question, saying that there “are a lot people that try to take you down a rabbit hole to discuss things that really aren’t that important.” Registering both her shock and her familiarity with West’s previous public comments on the issue of marriage equality, Phillips interrupted the House member. “Wait a minute. “Are you saying gay marriage is not important?” she asked. Said West, who appeared uncomfortable with the question, “I think if you poll the American people—I don’t think they’re going to bring up gay marriage as one of the top concerns. The American people are concerned about where they’re working.” That answer marked a departure for the former Army lieutenant colonel, who told the Eagle Forum Collegians 2011 Summit in Washington last year that gay marriage was a slippery slope with one destination: the end of society as we know it. “The term ‘gay marriage’ is an oxymoron,” West told the Forum last June. “Because marriage is a union and a bond between a man and a woman to do one thing: the furtherance of society by procreation,

through creating new life.” He cautioned that by continuing to permit the existence of nontraditional institutions, “it just becomes a matter of time before you don’t have society.”

Christian Conservatives Could Deliver Florida to GOP in November Presidential Race FORT LAUDERDALE – A push by Florida-based evangelical voters to mobilize unregistered voters could provide the push needed to deliver Florida’s 29 electoral votes to the Republican presidential nominee— whomever that individual proves to be.

FFPC PRESIDENT JOHN STEMBERGER

At a meeting last week at Fort Lauderdale mega-church Calvary Chapel, John Stemberger, president of the Orlando-based Florida Family Policy Council (FFPC), told nearly 200 assembled volunteers, “We’re organizing Florida to take back America.” The volunteers were mobilized to recruit thousands of local Christians who haven’t registered to vote in an effort to create an evangelical voting bloc that will deliver the Sunshine State to the GOP in November. In 2008, Barack Obama won Florida’s 27 electoral votes. (Under the U.S. Constitution, the increase to the state’s population under the 2010 U.S. Census resulted in an addition of two congressional seats and two electoral votes.) “What you do or don’t do in the next seven months could mean the difference in who is running the free world. It’s that serious,” emphasized Stemberger, whose organization is affiliated with the conservative Family Research Council (FRC). “We live in a complacent nation, and

FLORIDAAGENDA.COM

that affects everybody,” noted Scott Spages, an official of Faith Forum, which draws its members from Calvary Chapel’s Broward and Palm Beach County campuses. “And there is a tendency among the faithful that God is directing things, when, in fact, He specifically calls on us to be involved in the governance of our land. And that’s often confused by the faithful,” he told the Sun Sentinel. According to FRC data, in 2008, Florida was home to 668,890 conservative Christians who didn’t vote because they weren’t registered. Obama won the state by 236,450. “With a fraction of that, we can win Florida,” Stemberger said at Calvary Chapel. “These are people who would vote the right way if they were registered.” For Stemberger, the Florida Republican Party’s former political director, “the right way” means stopping the Democratic Obama, from being reelected. Critics, including LGBT rights activists, say that fractures within the Republican coalition may make it difficult for the party to win with or without an energized base of heretofore unregistered voters. They also point to the likelihood of Mitt Romney’s presumptive nomination, and the potential the former Massachusetts governor’s Mormon faith has to turn off potential Christian evangelical and fundamentalist voters, many of whom do not view the Latter Day Saint (Mormon) religion as truly Christian as they understand the term. To the concerns of these latter day “doubting Thomases,” Stemberger has a reply. “You may not like the [GOP] nominee,” he told one group of volunteers. “We have got to think clearly about this. We can’t be purists. If we’re purists, strategically we’re done. And so we have to understand the stakes are high. The world is at stake.”

“TITANIC: VOICES FROM THE DISASTER” BY DEBORAH HOPKINSON By TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER

Imagine going on the cruise of a lifetime. It would be so exciting! Imagine - you’d have a whole ship to explore. You could swim and play games, watch dolphins in the ocean, snack all day, and mess around without worrying your parents. Maybe you could even get a tour of the ship’s inner workings. How cool is that? Just imagine: you wouldn’t have to make your bed. You wouldn’t have to clean up after yourself. You wouldn’t have a bedtime to think about. You would want to count lifeboats, however, once you’ve read “Titanic: Voices from the Disaster” by Deborah Hopkinson. One hundred years ago, before airplanes made trans-Atlantic flight possible for everybody, the most common way to travel between Europe and North America was by ship. It usually took several days for those big

ocean liners to make the trip from coast to coast and since there were no cell phones, there were very few ways to tell everyone back home that you were having a great time. Of all the great ships, three of them were owned by White Star Lines: Olympic, Brittanic, and the largest and most luxurious of all, Titanic. The Titanic was massive: bigger than two full football fields, the ship weighed nearly 47,000 tons and could carry more than 3,500 passengers with three levels of travel. There were several dining rooms, a gymnasium, a swimming pool (which was unique at the time), and a post office. The Titanic was almost like a small town. On April 10, 1912, amid much celebration, the Titanic set out on its very first trip. Bankers, financiers, and the Titanic’s director and designer were

aboard, as well as many people from all walks of life. Sailing on the Titanic was a treat for some and a new beginning for others. For all, though, it would be a life-changing event. Just before midnight on April 14, while most passengers were asleep, an iceberg was spotted. The captain, unworried, gave word to move slowly ahead: after all, the Titanic was thought to be unsinkable. His orders were a big mistake. Using documents, letters, and telegrams from people who survived, as well as authentic accounts of passengers who disembarked early, author Deborah Hopkinson tells the story of what happened that night 100 years ago and how it changed both lives and laws. I found those first-person accounts fascinating, and I was also particularly pleased to see a treasure-

trove of pictures, all of which put a sobering face upon the tragedy and its aftermath. While a Titanic-obsessed adult will find a lot to like here, “Titanic: Voices from the Disaster” is really meant for kids ages 10 and up. For them, for enjoyment, vacation, or for school, this mesmerizing book may be a lifesaver.H

Further, he misappropriated millions of dollars of investor funds, so any percentage returns he claimed could not have provided enough profits to pay all investors the returns he claimed. Elia transferred the funds to entities he controlled, including relief defendants 212 Entertainment Club Inc., and Elia Realty Inc. He also used some of the funds to pay personal expenses such as mortgage and car payments, and to pay an associate to introduce him to potential investors to sustain his Ponzi

scheme.” The SEC civil complaint, which was filed in federal court before Elia’s arrest, notes that 67-year-old Elia “until recently resided in Oakland Park, Florida, but is believed to now reside in Cyprus. Elia has never been registered with the [Securities and Exchange] Commission in any capacity.” It also says that Elia’s company, CYPRUS, GREECE, THE CITY TO WHICH ICIG “has never been ELIA ABRUPTLY MOVED HIS BELONGINGS registered with the Commission as an investment adviser.” that Elia may have achieved These last two are serious charges in through fraudulent means. and the elderly, as well as LGBT individuals. The perpetrators of affinity scams frequently are—or pretend to be—members of that group. Several of Elia’s alleged victims say that they were introduced to the daytrader by Wilton Manors resident Jim Ellis, although no charges have been filed against him. Elia is said to have met with prospective clients over dinner at expensive restaurants in and around Wilton Manors and Fort Lauderdale. Authorities say that investors were referred to Elia by “word of mouth,” and by relatives and friends of the alleged victims. A large number of these are members of Wilton Manors’ LGBT community. The 19-page complaint filed by the SEC in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida alleges that “From March 2005 to January 2012, defendants George Elia and his company, International Consultants & Investment Group Ltd. LGBT Rights Protections voted down in Anchorage

Gay Ohio High School Student Sues after T-shirt Ban

ANCHORAGE, AK – Voters in the Alaska capital rejected efforts to add protections for people regardless of “sexual orientation or transgender identity” to the city’s civil rights ordinances. Strong voter turnout resulted in many polling sites running out of ballots during the plebiscite, which was held on Tuesday, April 3. Although several thousand votes had yet to be counted according to the clerk for the Municipality of Anchorage, Proposition 5 trailed by almost 9,000 votes, despite earlier poll numbers that indicated the measure would pass. A similar ordinance that had been passed by the 11-member Anchorage Assembly was vetoed in 2009 by Mayor Dan Sullivan. One Anchorage, the group that organized the Proposition 5 ballot initiative, included both prominent Democrats and Republicans, including the state’s U.S. Senators, Lisa Murkowski (R- Alaska) and Mark Begich (D-Alaska). The coalition— which received out-of-state support, including a $25,000 donation from Colorado billionaire Tim Gill, a regular benefactor of LGBT causes—outspent opponents more than 4 to 1, raising nearly $350,000. These opponents included conservative Alaskan religious groups, among them the Roman Catholic Church. Most of the opposition was financed by the 2,500-member Anchorage Baptist Temple (ABT) and its pastor, Rev. Jerry Prevo. Prevo had argued against both previous efforts to enact an LGBT right ordinance: first in the late 1970s under Mayor George Sullivan, and later in 2009 under Sullivan’s son, Dan, who was elected to a second term by a wide margin during last week’s vote. Prevo and ABT ran ads that evoked— inaccurately—several scenarios which would be permissible under the new ordinance, including one in which a church would not be able to fire a

WAYNESVILLE, OH – A high school student filed suit last week in federal court after school officials prohibited him from wearing a T-shirt containing the message “Jesus Is Not A Homophobe.” The lawsuit of student Maverick Couch, was filed on April 3 in U.S. District Court in Cincinnati, and asks that the student be permitted to wear his shirt to school during the April 20 National Day of Silence, an event that draws attention to the national epidemic of bullying and its effect of silencing of gay and lesbian students. In the suit, Couch, 17, claims that last spring he was repeatedly refused permission by school Principal Randy Gebhardt to wear the T-shirt during the 2011 Day of Silence on the grounds that it was “indecent and sexual in nature.” The T-shirt depicts the image of a fish—which bears similarities to religious iconography used by Christians—painted in rainbow colors. Below the fish are the words “Jesus Is Not A Homophobe.” “I don’t think the shirt is sexual at all. I don’t know how they can say that,” Couch said. “I don’t think it’s indecent.” He noted that other students routinely wear religious-themed shirts that include Bible verses. The student’s attorney, Christopher Clark, said his client attempted for months to settle things with school officials, but that they refused to compromise. Couch was first told by administrators that the T-shirt was disruptive, but later claimed that it was too religious. Clark says that officials now say the shirt violates regulations that prohibit indecent clothing or items that are sexual in nature. He says that he is aware of only two student complaints about Couch wearing the T-shirt. The suit draws renewed attention to the ongoing balance of students’ First Amendment rights and the responsibility of school authorities to impose discipline and enforce regulations.

In the 1969 Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District Supreme Court decision, Justice Abe Fortas wrote for the 7 to 2 majority that students do not “shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate.”

APRIL 12, 2012 H 9

But students’ rights are not absolute, and the courts have also ruled that school administrators are permitted to prohibit speech that is seriously disruptive, and that they may likewise censor materials in school newspapers that detail sensitive subjects. H

what concerns me. That’s what keeps me up awake at night, not worrying about who’s sleeping with whom.” Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX)—who voted “no” in 2007 on federal legislation that would prohibit employment discrimination based on sexual orientation, and was rated 0% by the Human Rights Campaign, indicating opposition to gay-rights—told Politico.com, “That’s not something we’re focused on now.” During the 2010 House floor debate on Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, Gohmert predicted that permitting openly-gay military servicemembers would sound America’s downfall. The Congressional Record reported the four-term lawmaker as saying that “when militaries throughout history … have adopted the policy [of ] ‘fine for homosexuality…’—they’re toward the end of their existence as a great nation.” Congressional Quarterly quoted an aide to a ranking House Republican who said that GOP lawmakers are concerned that the conservative social agenda that has been driving the Republican presidential primaries will alienate independent and socially moderate voters in their home congressional districts. “There is a debate in the Republican conference on whether defense of marriage is a winning issue politically,” the unnamed aide said. These concerns have touched the top echelon of GOP leaders, who have been sending mixed signals to social conservatives—to the displeasure of the latter. In 2011, President Obama instructed the Justice Department to stop defending DOMA in court. At that time, House Speaker John Boehner and the Republican House leadership formed the House Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group (BLAG) to step into the void and defend the law in court. Attorney Paul Clement was hired

to defend DOMA, and given a $1.5 million budget by BLAG. Marriage equality opponents expressed satisfaction with Boehner and BLAG. They have recently begun to sharply criticize what they perceive as lackluster performance on the part of Boehner and the GOP leadership, and accuse them of paying lip service to mollify religious and social conservatives. “They hired Paul Clement, and they think their job is done,” complained Tom McClusky, senior vice president of the Family Research Council, to Congressional Quarterly. “While the Obama administration ignores DOMA, Speaker Boehner has forgotten that the checks and balances also include Congress,” he added. The possibility of a social realignment within the GOP echoes an actual shift that occurred during the 1948 presidential election, when the Democratic Party split on the issue of civil rights for African Americans. Addressing the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia that year, Minneapolis mayor Hubert Humphrey urged party leaders to “get out of the shadow of states’ rights and walk forthrightly into the bright sunshine of human rights.” That call resulted in a walkout by Southern Democrat delegates, who subsequently nominated then-South Carolina Gov. Strom Thurmond as the candidate of the States’ Rights Party, or Dixiecrats. “Republicans are cognizant of where the public is moving,” said Brian Moulton, the legal director of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest LGBT rights organization, concerning the mixed signals. “The Speaker’s defense of the law helps us show the harms that the law has caused,” and, he added, “at the end of the day, his action perpetuates the harms.” H

his weekend, Leonardo Di Caprio fans—not all of them teenage girls—and history buffs alike will mark the centennial anniversary of one of the most widely-known and depicted disasters in modern history, the sinking of RMS Titanic. I enjoyed the 1997 James Cameron film: I thought that it succeeded in capturing the gargantuan size of the “unsinkable” ocean liner and was able to convey that sense of dread and insignificance that must have been experienced in their final minutes by those unfortunate 1,514 souls who lost their lives in the disaster. The movie also did an admirable job of depicting the Edwardian Era conspicuous consumption that was represented by the ship’s luxurious amenities (and by the presence on the passenger list of such Gilded Age titans as J.J. Astor, Benjamin Guggenheim, and Macy’s owner Isidor Straus, all of whom died in the tragedy). Although he cast Academy Award winner Kathy Bates in the role of the “Unsinkable” Molly Brown, a millionaire women’s rights advocate and one of that era’s most colorful figures, Cameron did not fill the role of two of the most interesting period luminaries aboard the Titanic: One of these was Maj. Archibald Butt, who served as a presidential aide in a capacity that would roughly equate to National Security Advisor in the job’s modern sense. The other was Butt’s longtime partner, artist Francis (“Frank”) Millet. Butt, who was 47 years old when the Titanic sank, had been a news correspondent before embarking upon a military career that took him to war zones in Cuba and the Philippines. His military service brought him to the attention of President Theodore Roosevelt, who promoted Butt to the Army rank of major and assigned him as military adviser and aide-de-camp, a position to which he was reappointed by Roosevelt’s successor, President William Howard Taft. Butt and Millet—who was 19 years older than his partner—had gone to Europe for some R&R after a bitter public political split between Roosevelt and Taft began to take its toll on the loyal aide.

BOBBY BLAIR – CEO / MANAGING PARTNER

PRESIDENT TAFT (LEFT), ARCHIBALD BUTT (RIGHT)

As the ocean liner began its slow death in the early hours of April 15, 1912, Butt was witnessed escorting female passengers to the lifeboats and conducting himself— as described by one woman whose life he saved—with gentlemanly care and concern for the safety of all around him. When the final lifeboat was adrift, the Spanish American War veteran was seen standing on deck. No one recalled seeing Millet at the end (although it was Millet’s remains and not Butt’s that were recovered after the ship sank). Millet, a Harvard graduate who had served as a surgical assistant for the Union during the Civil War and was an international war correspondent before becoming a painter, was described by his friend, novelist Henry James, as “magnificent,” “manly,” and “irradiating beautiful gallantry,” and by his partner, Butt, as “Millet, my artist friend who lives with me.” The couple lived together in a relationship that was more-or-less an open secret, holding famous Washington, DC parties that were attended by cabinet members, Supreme Court justices, military leaders, ambassadors, and President Taft himself. “People come early to my house and always stay late and seem merry while they are here,” wrote Butt after one successful party. This being just a few years after the sexual hypocrisy of the Victorian Age, Butt and Millet’s “friendship” was viewed through the prism of an early version of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, with Washington society accepting the men’s mutual affection while not digging too deeply into the details. The two men left together in March 1912, bound for Europe on board the steamship Berlin. They returned to America together, as well, and although the passenger list

records that they had separate cabins on the Titanic, it probably had something to do with the luggage and volume of gifts and accessories they had acquired while overseas: Butt alone boarded the ship with seven steamer trunks filled with clothes and items he had purchased in Europe. 1912 or 2012: some things never change. President Taft was said to weep when he learned of Butt’s death, and he joined most of official Washington in grieving for his adjutant. Wrote one period journalist: “The name of Maj. Archie Butt, once synonymous of laughter and jest, now symbolic of heroism, was repeated while eyes blurred and voices became queerly strained.” Several monuments and memorials were built in memory of Maj. Archibald Butt. One is a plaque in the Washington National Cathedral (which, through a quirk of modern architecture, is located upon a wall in the gift shop). Another is a memorial fountain erected in the Ellipsis area of the President’s Park in Washington, DC named after both men, the Butt-Millet Fountain. Because Butt’s remains were lost at sea, a cenotaph (or empty tomb) was built in Arlington National Cemetery to honor the late presidential aide. A memorial service was held in the Butt family home in Georgia on May 2, 1912. It was attended by 1,500 mourners, including President Taft, who said: “If Archie could have selected a time to die, he would have chosen the one God gave him. His life was spent in self– sacrifice, serving others. His forgetfulness of self had become a part of his nature. Everybody who knew him called him ‘Archie.’ I couldn’t prepare anything in advance to say here. I tried, but couldn’t. He was too near me. He was loyal to my predecessor, Mr. Roosevelt, who selected him to be military aide, and to me he had become as a son or a brother.” There’s a film I would love to watch.

OUR FUND

SPREADING THE WEALTH IN THE LGBT COMMUNITY By DALE MADISON

As someone who has served in the non-profit community from Gay Pride Events to HIV related organizations I have long wondered why no one in the community tried to introduce all of the area non-profits to each other so that each organization knows what services each group provides. Enter, “Our Fund.” When I got to sit down with one of the founders, Anthony Timiraos, CEO/President, we immediately had a connection due to both of our work in the community over the years. “Our Fund” is a 501 (c) 3, tax-exempt organization which focuses on Women, Seniors, Health, Arts and the Youth in the community. Currently working with the Brian Neal Foundation, they have focused on working with those men and women living with HIV/ AIDS. In conjunction with Island City Health and Fitness, the Neal Foundation, in cooperation with “Our Fund,” has been sponsoring those that are unable to afford gym memberships.

As most know, keeping your health at an optimum is key in staying healthy when battling HIV/AIDS. “Our Fund” has developed several levels of support for the organization. “We have so many levels of support and so many ways that people can help. There is the entry Bronze level which is $1500$2499; our Silver is $2500-$4,999; our Gold level is $5000 to $9999; the Diamond level is set at $10,000 to $14,999; and our Platinum is $15,000 and above,” says Timiraos.” “Every dime that we bring in stays in “OUR COMMUNITY” hence the title “Our Fund”. When someone wills us money, we keep it in the community and dispense it in that manner. For example, let’s say someone leaves $500,000, and they specify a certain organization to receive that money. Perhaps that puts the donation level over a certain amount that may cause them to lose other federal, state or local funds. What we do is send that money over a period of time as to

WHAT’S INSIDE: TITANIC DISASTER

A

pril has yet to manifest much in the way of showers, for which we can be grateful. Sunny skies are the perfect accompaniment to this Sunday’s Miami Beach Gay Pride (stop by the Florida Agenda and GUY Magazine booth and say “hi”). In addition to the most popular outdoor event in MiamiDade County, you can find out about all that’s happening in South Florida this weekend and the rest of the month inside this week’s OUT in Florida. This weekend is the 100th Anniversary of the Worst Waterborne Disaster in History (and no, we don’t mean Shelley Winters’ swimming scene in “The Poseidon Adventure”), and the shelves of bookstores everywhere are brimming with tales of RMS Titanic. Terri Schlichenmeyer reviews a boatload of titles about a fascinating chapter in maritime history that will be capturing imaginations for another century and more. Robert Elias Deaton sets the record straight for those who think the Canary Islands are for the birds, with a spectacular look at this tropical paradise and gay-friendly wonderland, inside Travel. The Victoria Park Greek Diner is a familiar site on the way to Fort Lauderdale’s sandy beaches, and epicure Richard David Chamberlain’s takes you inside for some delicious twists on Mediterranean fare, in Dining. The Man. The Myth. The Legend. Victor Zepka of Boardwalk has been described as these and more, and Dale Madison has a personal look at the pioneering entrepreneur and impresario, in this week’s Spotlight. Justin Jones says there’s “more” to Grindr and its visitors than meets the ear, inside this week’s Love Jones. See you at Miami Beach Pride! CD.

BOOK REVIEW:

100 Years of TITANIC: A Shipload of Books about the Doomed Liner By TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER “Voyagers of the Titanic” by Richard Davenport-Hines © 2012, William Morrow $26.99 / $29.99 Canada 342 pages, includes index

T

here’s no doubt about it: moving stinks. You pack your belongings, living with cartons and mess in the meantime, always needing something that’s stashed in a mystery box. Then you haul everything to your new place and unpack it, living with cartons and mess in the meantime, looking for the mystery box and apologizing to whatever friends you have left after they have finished helping. Now imagine doing it blindly and with very little real preparation, clutching a few paltry possessions and a half-promise of a job, leaving your loved ones an ocean behind. That’s just one of the stories you’ll find in “Voyagers of the Titanic” by Richard Davenport-Hines. One hundred winters ago, the Arctic temperature was milder than normal, which created a higher number of icebergs from the glaciers near Greenland’s coast.

Third class passengers, who constituted most of those onboard, were likewise mostly British, but they also hailed from Ireland, Croatia, Norway, and elsewhere. Second-class passengers were largely working-class folks, social up-andcomers, and small business owners. They counted among them a single black man, the only one on board. First class passengers were the kind who might board the Titanic on a whim, or just as quickly cancel the trip to pursue another fancy. Some of them, in fact, did so. Others, tragically, did not. “Voyagers of the Titanic” begins in an unusual place, and one can almost feel the doom in author Richard DavenportHines’ words. For reasons you’ll soon see, the ship was ill-fated from the moment it set sail and—knowing what you know—there is a sense of wanting to warn someone of the impending disaster as you’re reading. Davenport-Hines tells about each group of people onboard, and there are even surprises here. I’ve read a lot of Titanic books, but I enjoyed this multifaceted take on the ill-starred story. “Voyagers of the Titanic” is truly quite moving. Worth a Look:

These icebergs floated down into the Atlantic Ocean, right into shipping lanes for cargo ships and luxury liners. One of the liners was the Titanic. Eleven stories high, weighing nearly 47,000 tons, the Titanic was massive. She carried 2,240 passengers and crew, gems and spices, books, a car, fine fabric, mail, and more. There were fine dining rooms onboard, a swimming pool, library, and quarters for pampered first-class dogs. Most of the crew of the Titanic was new to this ship, although they were an experienced lot. An overwhelming majority of them were British and included stewards, a linen keeper, and a slew of men whose backbreaking job was to fill 190 steel furnaces with coal every 20 minutes. Their captain was on the verge of retirement.

“’Unsinkable’: The Full Story of the RMS Titanic” by Daniel Allen Butler takes the story from before the ship was built to the days when she was discovered at the bottom of the Atlantic. First published more than a decade ago, the newly-refurbished paperback is nicely updated. Author Charles Pellegrino jumps into the midst of the tragedy in “Farewell, Titanic: Her Final Legacy” and tells the story of the last minutes before the sinking and its aftermath from the survivors point-of-view. Pellegrino then writes about the subsequent search for the ship. Readers who just want an overview of events will appreciate “The Titanic for Dummies” by Stephen Spignesi. Like most other books in the “for Dummies” series, there’s just enough information to make you seem Titanic smart. The book is browse-able and also includes some cool pictures. “Titanic: The Unfolding Story” takes a look at the days before the ship was built through the days after the disaster. The unique twist here is that the book is created entirely of authentic newspaper articles and stories from the Edwardian era. The pictures imbue a “You Are There” feel to this read.

YOUR WEEKLY STYLE NEWS BRIEFING:

Love Jones

[cybersexual] By JUSTIN JONES

Network Bans “Truth or Dare” TV Ad NEW YORK, NY – Executives at ABC television have axed a 30-second spot for Madonna’s “Truth or Dare” perfume, calling the ad too racy to run during the network’s primetime lineup. According to The New York Post, ABC programmers took a magnifying glass to the Material Girl’s commercial, making a list of editing requirements before they would allow the spot to air. The black-and-white ad premiered last week, and was broadcast during the network’s talk show “The View,” which airs weekdays at 11 a.m. Despite that, ABC, which is owned by the Walt Disney Company, refused to all the commercials to run during primetime shows “GCB” and “Scandal.” The Post quoted a source familiar with the network’s demands. The source reported that for the ad, ABC execs wanted to tone down Madonna’s more provocative body movements, and that they “want her bra digitally made bigger, and to extend higher to cover more of her chest, and her corset longer to cover more of her bottom.” ABC’s actions mimic those of YouTube officials, who last month blocked underage users from watching the music video for the singer’s “Girl Gone Wild.” That video— also shot in black-and-white—evokes Madonna’s 1990s videos, which included depictions of sado-masochism and hyperhomoerotic imagery. As in the case of ABC, YouTube content chiefs labeled the video “too raunchy,” “unsuitable,” and appropriate “only [to] be viewed by those 18 or over.” And like the network, the Web content provider required Madonna to make edits and turn down the heat in some places, in particular scenes depicting bare buttocks and gyrating men.

Starbucks Gets “Thank You” Card from 650,000 Marriage Equality Supporters Coffee Chain Embraces Diversity in the Face of Religious Conservative Boycott

SEATTLE, WA – Marriage equality supporters delivered a giant “thank you” card to Starbucks officials for their support of diversity and inclusiveness. The card, which contained more than 650,000 signatures, was partly delivered in response to an online campaign launched to protest the coffee chain’s progressive corporate policies. Said James Olson, Starbucks’ Vice President of Global Corporate Communications: “We are long-standing supporters of a culture of diversity, and inclusion and equality for everybody, and I’ll share this with our fellow leaders and partners. Thank you very much.” The gay marriage supporters—a coalition that included the groups MoveOn.org,

Washington United for Marriage, and SumOfUs.org—said that “Thank Starbucks” was conceived in part after the Seattlebased chain was condemned by the National Organization of Marriage (NOM), which set up a “Dump Starbucks” to protest the company’s pro-gay policies. “We are urging customers across the globe to ‘Dump Starbucks’’ because it has taken a corporate-wide position that the definition of marriage between one man and one woman should be eliminated and that same-sex marriage should become equally ‘normal.’ As such, Starbucks has deeply offended at least half its US customers, and the vast majority of its international customers,” reads a statement on NOM’S Web site. At press time, NOM’s site has 25,862 recorded pledges. Last month, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz defended the chains policies during a shareholder meeting. Schultz said that the coffee giant had enacted its policies “through the lens of humanity, and being the kind of company that embraces diversity.”

[anonymous]: hi cutie. [justin]: hey there. [anonymous]: ure really cute. wanna come over? [justin]: sry, i dont really hookup. [Deleted Message]: Unfortunately a user blocked you before you had the opportunity to read the message they sent you. Ah, the familiar Grindr tri-tone. It precedes the most profound questions, like “what r u into?” and “u clean?”—questions unsuitable for anything but the blind safety of a phone app, yet somehow better conceived than that amateurish “a/s/l?” crap of yesterday. Welcome to Web X.O, Sexualized Social Media, where we move our shyness and introversion beyond the mere social and into the shadowy corners of our darkest fantasies.

from the Internet was NOT alright. The Internet harbored murderers, after all: best not to actually meet them. Chatting with them and piquing their interest in obscene and extreme ways was a much safer bet. Years later, Web 2.0 strolled in, bringing with it a new dimension of faceless interaction: this time, with our REAL friends, and with people we REALLY might want to meet. We were growing up, and our introversion matured. The coming-of-age of the sexual Web took our conversations to a new level (much to the disappointment of our formerly sex-centric avatars). This passage introduced us to a terrifying new species: Gays Who Don’t Use Social Media to Hook Up. Cue the scary music. “Never fear!” said the software developers. “We’ll carve out a place where the sexuallystarved can go to get their fill.” Voila! Grindr and its offspring were born. But with the ubiquity of these apps came

Florida Family Association Launches Email Campaign against Online Game Designer Call to Action is urged to Protest Gay Relationships in Popular Role-playing Game

TAMPA – Software developer Electronic Arts (EA) is at the center of an email and letter-writing campaign directed by the Tampa-based Florida Family Association (FFA), prompted by the condemnation of religious organizations for depictions of same-sex romantic relationships in the designer’s hit online role-playing games, including Mass Effect 3 and Star Wars: The Old Republic. According to a report from Games Industry International, several thousands of letters have been received by EA executives protesting homosexual relationships in the games’ software. As previously reported in the Agenda, (Feb. 2, 2012 STYLE: “Religious Conservatives Declare War on Galactic Foe: Star Wars’ ‘Old Republic’”) religious conservatives have previously mobilized to complain about samesex romances in the publisher’s games, and that of its developer, BioWare. The complaints were based upon promises from the developer to add the option for same-sex romance at the player’s prompting. At present, such options are not available. The latest round of letters claim that EA execs have bowed to pressure from LGBT groups, and that the inclusion of same-sex relationships is a thinly-disguised effort to “recruit” children to a homosexual lifestyle. Some of the letters include hand-written admonishments for company officials to “remember Sodom.” EA officials call the campaign “political harassment.”

Far from being a new techno trend, hearing a tri-tone and thinking “SEX!” started for some of us in the infancy of popularized cyberspace with, as I recall, AOL 3.0. It was that second, “fun” screen-name you hid from your family and friends which you used for plundering the corridors of the Man4Man chat rooms. Through this Secret Identity, you explored a side of yourself that you kept otherwise hidden beside your bed: inside a bottle of Jergens, with some spit for extra support. “You’ve Got Mail,” the invisible AOL man acknowledged. And you knew what it was: an offer to enlarge your penis, or a dirty picture from someone called “RichardStroker78.” And as you played in your mailbox, the AOL tri-tone rang and an Instant Message commanded your attention with something shocking (were it to be said out loud), but because it was accompanied by that chipper little ring, it felt okay. Here we played our dirty games behind virtual walls, separated by hundreds of miles and the notion that actually meeting someone

a tidal wave of those OTHER conversations on Grindr, the ones that drove people to download the beast in the first place. Profiles cropped up scrawled with descriptions like “No Hookups” and “Looking for LTR.” Which brings us to now. We live in a world where nomadic cyber-sexuals will always find their niche, and in which the “friends only” crowd will follow. It’s polarizing. I hear Grindarians complaining all the time about those pesky profiles. “It’s a hook-up app,” they complain: “Go to Facebook if you want friends.” I happen to be one of the “friends-only” members and in our defense it’s really just because we like teasing you. That or maybe— just maybe—it’s okay to have both.

CANARY ISLANDS By ROBERT ELIAS DEATON

T

he Canary Islands sit off the coast of Northwest Africa some 60 miles from Morocco but, otherwise, a world away. The Spanish archipelago is composed of seven major islands, all watched over by its own patron saint, the Virgin of Candelaria, who has her hands full—particularly in Playa del Inglés, the largest resort town in the group. Here, being gay is not only accepted, it’s expected. Let me explain. All of the Canaries, as the islands are collectively known, have a live-and-let-live lifestyle that manifests itself in a joy so contagious that straights, gays, transsexuals, and bipolars rub hips, lock lips and otherwise enjoy each other’s company without the slightest hint of judgment. Playa del Inglés on Gran Canaria (the second most populated of the islands)

takes carpe diem to the extreme with a nude beach and sand dunes to frolic by day, and a 200 store/ bar shopping mall called the Yumbo Centrum to get naughty by night. But first things, first. You get to the Canary Islands via flights to Las Palmas Airport (LPA). From the airport, known locally as Gando, you can catch a cab to Playa del Ingles for 35 euros, or take the five euros #66 public bus if money is tight. Either way, it’s a short 20-minute trip. The Riu Palace Maspalomas Hotel (Avenida Tirajana, Plaza Fuerteventura) is always a good choice for a place to stay. It’s the closest hotel to the sand dunes and the gay beach (located near beach stand #7)—just follow the pack of boys in thongs. It’s a ten minute walk to Yumbo Centrum (Avenida de Espana), a four-story tourist trap of stores and restaurants during the day that turns into a gay mecca at night. After 10 p.m., the bars take control of the place, with each trying to outdo the other with music and drink specials, backrooms and black lights.

Playa del Inglés

The Riu Palace Maspalomas Hotel Avenida Tirajana, Plaza Fuerteventura The dress code in the evening is, well, minimum— as in, the less you have on the better. Nearly all the gay bars at Yumbo are clothing optional. The only item required is footwear, which should tell you something. You can float from bar to bar, wearing only your underwear, which is about as carpe diem as you can get. Most clubs charge five euros cover, which includes a free drink. At The Cellar, on the ground floor, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays are Underwear night (that’s the maximum you can wear), Thursday night you’ll find Naked in the Dark (no explanations needed), Saturday is Jock Strap night while Sunday is Shoes Only. The Cellar knows how to throw a party. On the first floor, Cruise Bar is the oldest gay club in town. Its theme is leather, the mood is dark, and the place is packed until 6 a.m., so they must be

doing something right. Upstairs on the fourth floor is Club Mykonos, with an enormous dance floor, and a motto that reads “If You’re Not Having Sex, See One of Our Staff for Assistance.” Think of it as Greek by way of Spain, Canary style. The local Gay Pride runs from May 7 through 12. There’s a traditional parade on the final day running smack through the middle of town on the Avenida Tirajana. This year’s theme is Countries of the World, so you’ll fit right in even if you call Florida home. The entire event climaxes at the Yumbo Centrum (where else?) and it’s a 24/7 type of party—not unlike the Canary Islands itself. And remember, the Virgin of Candelaria has your back. SPOTLIGHT: SOUTH FLORIDA BUSINESS PIONEER VICTOR ZEPKA’S BOARDWALK EMPIRE By DALE MADISON

O

ne of the legendary figures in South Florida’s club scene is Victor Zepka, owner of the Boardwalk Bar. Looking back from the “vantage point” of 1984, who would have thought that what started as a piano bar in Sunny Isles would become one of the world’s most famous male strip nightclubs? Zepka found the location quite by accident, and at a time when there were far fewer gay bars in town.

“At that time there was a club called 13 Buttons, and the old Seagull Resort,” notes Zepka. “You would never walk down Lincoln Road after 6:00 p.m. There were no safe places and no lighted parking lots at the time,” he adds. At this point, the bar was far from

the success it would achieve—or the theme it would adopt. “It was ‘okay’ business-wise,” explains Zepka about the bar’s early days, “but I just knew that there was much more that I had expected.” The club had yet to take on the trappings that would make it famous. “Then one day a customer said, ‘Gee I wish there was a club around that featured male dancers,’” Zepka remembers. “I started out with one dancer, who would come out between sets of the piano player, and then I added another and another and, finally, it was one of those things that happened on a lark, and the rest as they say is ‘history,’” Zepka says with a laugh. Although he was enjoying the successes of owning a popular spot, the true impact of it had yet to hit. That was soon to change. “After the business really took off, I went to Amsterdam, as the boyfriend wanted to try marijuana legally. While we were there at a local bar, the bartender and two of the patrons asked where we lived,” says Zepka. “We told them ‘Miami,’ and after a second, they asked ‘Have you heard of a place called the Boardwalk?’ It was really quite flattering,” he admits. “Can you imagine that in South Florida we get five million tourists a year, and Las Vegas gets 53 million a year? We are so fortunate to have the kind of quality people who visit, and Boardwalk is fortunate to have

the staff and the boys who work for us,” he says. Just after the turn of the millennium, Zepka relocated the business from Sunny Isles to its present

location in Greater Fort Lauderdale. “It is hard to believe that we have now been here in the new location for 10 years,” says Zepka. Along the way, he acquired a new business partner in the person of Jim Kolkana, who himself boasts a highly successful history as an entrepreneur. The Boardwalk continues to grow: In their current location, Zepka and Kolkana have partnered with longtime community member and restaurateur Vicky Bennett to open the very

popular Beefcakes Restaurant. Zepka is grateful for his success, and for the ongoing community support. “At this point we don’t have to recruit people, they actually seek us out. One of the things that we really promote is that we are gay owned and operated. We support gay-owned businesses and hope that they return the support, and not just to us.” Zepka tries to maintain a generous personal outlook on business. “Sean David, the owner of Johnny’s [a competing men’s strip nightclub], is a former business partner here at Boardwalk. I love him, as he is a gay man and I want people to support him and his business,” says Zepka, with the mark of a true gentleman.perfect fit to re-introduce the Jackhammer T-Dance.” The pair teamed up recently with original “Studio 54” bartender Sal Defalco, and original “Studio 54” deejay Richie Rich, and held a “Studio 54 Reunion Weekend Party.” It was so successful, that another one has been planned for September. Get ready, too, for the Blackheart Ball in April, to benefit Broward House and the Leather Archives and Museum. VICTORIA PARK GREEK DINER Combining Two Tradition and Heaping Portion By RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN

T

he sign says “Greek Diner Gyros and Subs” in giant white letters against a blue background. Only upon careful examination do the words “Victoria Park” sneak into view. This restaurant, a one-time Miami Subs franchise, is a local favorite, and while the signage is new, the menu is a tried-and-true mix of diner classics and Greek staples. Olga Nikolaidis owns the joint with her family, and serves up some surprisingly good alternatives to fast-food fare. Our favorite here is an amazing Moussaka ($9.29), which in any other world would be called an eggplant casserole. It is a blend of seasoned ground beef and potatoes that do an adagio dance with sliced eggplant, topped with a Béchamel sauce. If you’re in the mood for a chicken dish, the Chicken Athenian ($12.79) is certain to please. It’s a baked breast

that is stuffed to overflowing with spinach and feta cheese, and served with a Greek salad and potatoes. Moist and Mediterranean fresh. The idea of eating a grape leaf may not appeal to some, but when it’s wrapped around a Dolmathes ($4.49), any hesitation you may feel should disappear instantly. These meat, onion and rice rolls come six to a serving and can easily be a main course if you’re in the mood for a dish that is both light and filling. Spanikopita is a Greek classic against which all other dishes are compared. In the version prepared here, the phyllo pastry is crisp and flakey, accented with spinach and feta, and served in a portion sized to feed the troops. Order it in combo with a Greek salad ($8.49) or on its own ($6.49) as a side dish. Either way—nostimos. The traditional Gyro (pronounced “yee-ro” to the uninitiated) ($7.49) is a compressed mix of beef and lamb that is cooked on a vertical rotisserie and sliced onto pita bread. The

taste difference at the Victoria Park Greek Diner is in the Tzatziki sauce—a blend of sour cream and cucumber that is whipped with garlic, dill and olive oil— that tops the Gyro sandwich. It’s sloppy and juicy—a four-napkin dish to be sure. And you’ll be happier because of it. The diner also serves a version with buffalo hot sauce called a Gyro Kaftero ($7.49). Both versions are served with crisp fries. Like diners worldwide, the Victoria Park Greek serves traditional (and not-sotraditional) breakfasts all day long. For $9.79, combine the Spanikopita, Gyro and two eggs—not cheap but a hearty plate that serves as breakfast and lunch. The omelette menu includes plain ($4.59),Western— with ham, green peppers, onion and cheese ($6.29), Athos— feta and spinach ($6.29), Meat Lovers—sausage, bacon, ham, onion, green peppers and cheese ($7.59), Doliana—spinach, feta, onion and tomato ($7.29) and the Koromilia—spinach, feta, tomato and sausage ($7.29) or any combination you can

concoct. The plates are all heaped with hash browns or home fries and served with toast or grits (well, this is the South). The Victoria Park Greek Diner is open daily at 6:30 a.m. for the early birds (7 a.m. on Sundays), and stays hopping through 4 p.m. in the afternoon. Service can be a bit on the haphazard side with the gossip at the front register often too tempting to resist. It’s a family affair, after all. However, the food more than makes up for any service gaffs. The place is not only gay-friendly, they donate a portion of the daily till to HIV Research and Care. Sweet (and appreciated). Come hungry and tell them Florida Agenda sent you.

TAPENADE

This Week’s Delicious Recipe

T

By JEAN DOHERTY

apenade is the easy peasy recipe you can whip up in 2 minutes. It is very versatile and can be used a number of ways rather than just as a spread or a dip. Spread a thin layer of it on a chicken between the skin and the breast, maybe with some fresh herbs before roasting; put dabs on hard-boiled eggs and top with pine nuts; or spread it on a sandwich instead of mustard or mayo. You can fold some into an omelet with some creamy-smooth goat cheese, or toss it in pasta as an instant sauce with chunks of fresh cooked or good-quality canned tuna. Make an entree of it; maybe even adding cubes of feta at the end. Green and black olives are natural aphrodisiacs. Use them to spice up your palate and your plate for a taste of succulent seduction with your mate. Besides increasing your libido, olives are jam packed with health benefits and being healthy is crucial to having a good sex life… Olives help prevent heart disease, prevent colon cancer, and one of the best reasons for me to eat olives is that they prevent frequency of hot flashes going through menopause. LOL.

• 1 clove garlic, chopped • 1 Jar or tin of whole, pitted Black olives • 1 (2 ounce) can anchovy fillets, rinsed • 1 tablespoon capers • 1 pinch chopped fresh thyme • 1 pinch chopped fresh rosemary • 3 tablespoons lemon juice • 4 tablespoons olive oil Combine the garlic, olives, anchovies, capers, thyme, rosemary and lemon juice in your electric blender. Slowly drip the olive oil into the blender while you are blending the ingredients together. Blend until a paste is formed. Don’t add salt!!! Spread on Pita bread, crackers, toasts…or use as a dip. Enjoy. You are a chef!

Although born in Dublin, Ireland, chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

REACH YOUR PEAK PHYSIQUE BY SUMMERTIME! By TOM BONANTI

I

t’s easy to skip the gym and make lame excuses about being too tired or too busy to get up off your glutes and lose weight and tone up. But unless you prefer living under a rock, you’ve got to see that the summer sizzle is nearly upon us and everywhere guys are looking leaner and hotter than ever. If you’re going to make the grade, you’ve got to have a plan. Plus you should never play the procrastination game when it comes to living a healthier happier life. Here’s a few training strategies that will pump new vitality into your training regime and help you to spring into a new season of sun and fun in South Florida. Shake up your routine and shock those muscle fibers into growing bigger – now! If you are bored with your same old weight training and cardio routines, chances are so are your muscles…and when they’re bored they refuse to grow bigger and stronger. Never rely on only one type of free weight equipment or cardio station during a workout. In every workout, combine dumbbells, barbells and cables. Your muscles need a variety of forms and movements in order to be challenged, breakdown and grow. For example, when blasting chest, you may want to do barbell flat bench presses, dumbbell incline presses and cable crossovers. As far as cardio goes, begin with a recumbent bike, switch to a Precor and try out the stair stepper when you are bold enough. Calculate your target heart rate and work your way into the fat burning zone and keep it there for 20 minutes or so. Often when my schedule is very busy, I like to workout twice a day. “What’s that?” you say! Sometimes in the morning, I may have only half an hour between clients. That’s a sufficient time for a pretty decent workout especially if you want to target one muscle group or do a dynamite cardio routine. Later in the day when time allows work another muscle group or do some more cardio for 20 minutes or so. Be consistent with your workouts and keep track of what you do and when you do it.

Stretching your muscles is great for injury prevention and it can actually help you build muscle. Like any muscle movement, stretching helps in its own way to break down stubborn muscle fiber, prevent the build up of painful adhesions, and build new muscle. Remember to stretch and tightly flex after each set of exercises the muscle group you have just worked. Light overall stretching session before and after your workout, is a must. Turn the heat up on your cardio by adding a burst of power and speed at brief intervals. This is basically what interval training is all about. If you’re on a treadmill or Precor, for example, this will mean bumping up to a minute of intense activity at a higher speed every 10 minutes or so according to your ability. These high intensity intervals interspersed into your already challenging routine will help you reach a higher level of cardiovascular fitness. As with any form of hard work, it is good to reward yourself as you see progress happening. Therefore, go shopping! Replace those tired, baggy, sweat stained, workout clothes with gear that shows off that body of yours. Make the most of your workouts. Enjoy the beautiful body you’ve worked so hard to create and stay healthy! For more tips on making your workouts fun and exciting contact TrainerTomB@ aol.com.
