In an email this week to journalist Andrew Sullivan, CNN host Anderson Cooper confirmed what many people already knew—or claimed to. “The fact is, I’m gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud,” Cooper, 45, wrote in his email, which was posted at Sullivan’s blog on The Daily Beast. Cooper’s admission is unique in some ways, in that it covers the emotional gamut represented by celebrities “coming out:” It both confirms what has long been held to be “true,” while offering an “I told you so” form of relief for some. Cooper’s email—sent in response to a question from Sullivan, who is himself openly gay, about an Entertainment Weekly story concerning celebrities who “out” themselves— went viral almost immediately, with a reported 100,000 shares of the story posted on Facebook within a matter of hours. In it, the television personality and author attempted to navigate the path between explaining the reasons for his late-day admission, and trying not to sound apologetic for valuing his personal privacy. “Recently, however, I’ve begun to consider whether the unintended outcomes of maintaining my privacy outweigh personal and professional principle,” Cooper wrote. “It’s become clear to me that by remaining silent on certain aspects of my personal life for so long, I have given some the mistaken impression that I am trying to hide something -- something that makes me uncomfortable, ashamed or even afraid. This is distressing because it is simply not true.” Cooper, a Yale University graduate and the son of socialite heiress Gloria Vanderbilt, has maintained a well-known privacy barrier for years. He acknowledged

which he decided the time was ripe for his announcement. “There continue to be far too many incidences of bullying of young people, as well as discrimination and violence against people of all ages, based on their sexual orientation, and I believe there is value in making clear where I stand.” Cyberspace erupted with reaction to Sullivan’s post. Television personality Kelly Ripa tweeted, “So proud of you Anderson Cooper. Always have been, always will be,” and talk host—and fellow openly gay celebrity— Ellen Degeneres added, “I’m proud of you, @AndersonCooper.” Manhattan-based Gawker.com publisher Nick Denton—who is gay, and has a habit of outing media personalities—posted on his news site that his own efforts at getting Cooper to own up had finally paid off. “You can call that bullying. But without some pressure, there wouldn’t be nearly as many public homosexuals,” Denton wrote in a column. “Everybody agrees by now that visibility is essential if one is going to change attitudes. What they don’t yet acknowledge is this: for visibility, you need a searing spotlight.” There were negative reactions, as well, including the response from conservative Media Research Center spokesman Brent Bozell, who tweeted, “Can @andersoncooper give us his expert opinion on teabagging now?”—a Anderson Cooper reference to a remark that Cooper made during a 2008 interview with former “For my safety and the safety of those I presidential adviser David Gergen, during work with, I try to blend in as much as a discussion of the Tea Party movement’s possible, and prefer to stick to my job of influence on the Republican Party. “This telling other people’s stories, and not my happens to a minority party after it’s own. I have found that sometimes the less lost a couple of bad elections, but they’re an interview subject knows about me, the searching for their voice,” Gergen said of better I can safely and effectively do my the GOP. job as a journalist.” “It’s hard to talk when you’re teaCooper also noted the social climate in bagging,” Cooper replied.H in his email to Sullivan that his sexual orientation was kept out of his 2006 memoir, “Dispatches From the Edge,” as well as during a 2005 interview for New York magazine, in which he coyly offered, “I understand why people might be interested. But I just don’t talk about my personal life.” He offered a professional context for keeping a lid on his sexual orientation. “Since I started as a reporter in war zones 20 years ago, I’ve often found myself in some very dangerous places,” he noted.

Sarasota Considers Domestic Partner Registry SARASOTA – Business and community leaders are lobbying the Sarasota City Commission to consider enacting a domestic partner registry, following a trend among other Florida cities, including Orlando and Tampa. Although the state constitution bans both same sex marriages and civil unions, a number of municipalities have established local registries. Thanks in part to an opinion from Florida’s attorney general that permits them, the Sunshine State now boasts nine cities and five counties with domestic partner registries, seven of them established in the last year. “In Florida, it’s almost like a wildfire,” says Ken Shelin, a former Sarasota city commissioner who supports establishing a registry, and who lobbied current commissioners in May about considering one. “I know that some people think that there’s a hidden agenda here—that there’s a gay agenda,” said Shelin. “But 90 percent of domestic partners are opposite sex.” If Sarasota adopts the proposed domestic partner registry, such rights as hospital visitation and medical care decisions, which are the usual province of married couples, would be guaranteed to unmarried couples who cohabitate.

in the state’s anti-bestiality laws doesn’t expressly forbid oral sex with animals. The Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney’s Office declined to charge suspect Eric Antunes with animal cruelty, after he was arrested in May for allegedly having oral sex with his girlfriend’s three-legged pit-bull.

Antunes, from Clearwater, faces kiddie porn-related charges after police say he admitted to downloading and viewing child pornography on his computer. But animal rights activists are aghast that the letter of the law has been twisted in direct defiance of the spirit of the law. “We need to close up this loose loophole,” Rick Chaboudy, executive director of the Suncoast Animal League, told the Tampa Bay Times. “This is one of those crimes that you can’t possibly imagine that it goes on, but I’m sure at one point in time, somebody said the same thing about child pornography.” An anonymous tip led police to Antunes, 29, who was said to have child pornography on his computer. Investigators found six pictures of him engaged in sexual acts with the pit-bull mix, named Ruby, and he was arrested on May 1. Prosecutors declined to charge Antunes with bestiality, because only one of the photos “would meet the strict criteria of the statute.” Antunes had previously worked at the Pinellas County Humane Society, and is the live-in-boyfriend of the organization’s medical director, who reportedly resigned after his arrest. Investigators say they have no proof that she was aware of Antune’s activities with her dog.H

CLIFF DUNN, EDITOR FOUNDER MULTIMEDIA PLATFORMS

M

y boyfriend and I were watching a movie last week which took place in an imagined version of the Middle Ages, complete with bloody—and bloodied—warriors and maidens in distress (who had left all pretense of maiden-hood long behind). This rough-around-the-edges retelling of the Dark Ages was actually more spot-on, historically, than some of the polishedarmor, keen-edged-blade versions of medieval life (and death) that are more typical for Hollywood. The film sparked a conversation between us about the historic nature and purpose of knighthood, and the institution’s function as the original “professional” army, who gave military service to a king or other lord—secular or religious—in exchange for land, weapons, and other benefits unique and specific to the class. Some later knights and similarly-bedecked feudal lords became so powerful, that medieval kings—and their Renaissance successors— began to hire real professional soldiers (mercenaries, we would call them today), who fought for king—and, by extension, country—without respect to a personal agenda. As technology—especially the advent in the 14th Century of the English longbow, which became the era’s weapon of mass destruction, laying waste to armored cavalry, for the next two centuries—made greater battlefield strides, the importance of knights became less and less apparent to the social order, at least from a military standpoint, and more ceremonial in nature, as a means of rewarding loyal service to the monarchy. This became most evident in the industrial and modern ages, when captains of industry, business, and public service were rewarded for their contributions to society with the honorary bestowal of knighthoods (and dame-hoods).

Sometimes, this practice went from the sublime to the ridiculous, as in 1965, when The Beatles were inducted as Members of the British Empire (MBEs). The very anti-Establishment John Lennon felt it necessary to justify accepting his investiture. “Lots of people who complained about us receiving the MBE received theirs for heroism in the war– for killing people,” he said. “We received ours for entertaining other people. I’d say we deserve ours more.” (In 1969, Lennon returned his MBE, to protest global imperialism.) It’s funny, the number of famous modern people—most of whom couldn’t tell the business end of a sword from a college class on medieval warfare—who have received honorary British knighthoods. A partial list includes such luminaries as tenor Placido Domingo, comedian Bob Hope, violinist Eugene Ormandy, musician Spike Milligan, conductor André Previn, billionaire Bill Gates, evangelist Billy Graham, and film auteur Steven Spielberg. I might be wrong, but there doesn’t seem to be a single medieval warlord in the bunch.

you are gay or are a woman and become a dame, your partner gets nothing.” Under the current British “honors” system, if, say, the fictional Basil Sloshpot received a baronetcy for a golf swing that “goes above and beyond,” his wife—the equally fictional Ligurtha Sloshpot neeFlumpf—would receive the courtesy address form of “Lady Ligurtha.” But no current provision exists for the very non-fictional Sir Elton John, or his equally-real partner, David Furnish, who, under Colville’s measure, would receive a similar courtesy title, probably “Sir David” (although, as a gay man, it’s tickling in the most campy way to imagine Sir Elton and Lady—or “Dame!”—David rolling past the royal booth at Ascot for a spot of tea with Liz and Pip). Clearly, this might not do much to assuage the restless ghost of a 6th Century Welsh warrior who rode into battle with the original King Arthur, who may be scratching his lice-infested spectral beard at the very notion of a gay Sir Ian McKellin—or a pacifist Sir John Lennon—but there were plenty of that

“A man in love is incomplete until he has married. Then he’s finished.” -Zsa Zsa Gabor Clearly, knighthood is an institution that has maintained its very existence by virtue of its adaptability—or at least the monarchy’s ability to adapt the institution to the needs and realities of a modern world (you may have an idea where I’m going with this). In keeping with this spirit of adaptability, I found news this week from the U.K. noteworthy. It appears that there is a movement underfoot in Parliament—introduced this week in the form of legislation—to allow “husbands and civil partners of those receiving honors [knighthood] to be allowed to use equivalent honorary titles to those available to women.” As Conservative MP Oliver Colville told The Sunday Times, “If you are made a peer or a knight, your wife automatically gets the title lady, but if

type who couldn’t come around to the idea of a reigning monarch who wore a dress. To date, Britain has had several reigning queens, some weak (Mary I, Anne), some strong (Elizabeth I, Victoria, Elizabeth II), but none of them would have their right to rule—as women—challenged in the context of a modern age. That institution, too—one which believes its very existence comes by way of “the Grace of God”— adapted to modern sensibilities, in spite of the objections of traditionalists. My question, then, is simple (although I realize that the times in which we live— sadly—rebel at the very idea of a simple answer): If these ancient and honorable institutions can adapt to the needs of modernity and gender, then what’s so special about marriage?H

It’s been one hell of a ride, and I want to thank the thousands of people across this country that volunteered, contributed, opened their homes, came to our events and cheered me on,” said Karger, 62. “Every one of you kept me going.” Karger worked on nine presidential campaigns, including those of President Ronald Reagan, George H. Bulgaria Gay PRIDE Parade Held Without Incident SOFIA, BULGARIA – Bulgaria’s fifth annual gay pride parade took place on June 30, without incident, in spite of the threat of reprisals—and calls from some extremist members of the clergy for violence against parade marchers. Eastern European LGBT advocates held their collective breath in the days leading up to Saturday’s march, following the use of threats and provocative language from gay rights opponents.

politicians says that the time has come for gay marriage to be legalized. On June 30, during Dublin’s Pride Festival, Labor Party leader Eamon Gilmore, the nation’s deputy prime minister—or Tánaiste—said that lawmakers should not dictate the terms of with whom one chooses to spend their lives. “I believe in gay marriage. The right of gay couples to marry is, quite simply, the civil rights issue of this generation, and, in my opinion, its time has come,” Gilmore said.

Which is more harmful for the nation?” In 2008, extremists attacked marchers with gasoline bombs during the first Bulgarian LGBT rights march. Sunday’s parade—the largest LGBT event to be held in Bulgaria— was attended by about 2,000 people, including U.S. Ambassador to Bulgaria James Warlick, and British Ambassador Jonathan Allen. I don’t believe for example, that it should ever be the role of the State to pass judgment on whom a person falls in love with, or whom they want to spend their life with.” In 2010, civil partnership was introduced in the Republic of Ireland, which constitutes the 26 southern counties of the island of Ireland. Last April, the first public same sex unions were performed, which bestowed many of the same legal rights in as traditional marriage, but advocates say it doesn’t go far enough.

Gay Cruise’s “Road to Morocco” Hits Pothole CASABLANCA, MOROCCO – Organizers of an all-gay cruise blame Moroccan officials for cancelling what would have been the first visit of its kind to a Muslim nation. On Saturday, June 30, officials from the Holland America Line and representatives from RSVP Vacations informed the 2,100 passengers on board the MS Nieuw Amsterdam that a planned visit to Casablanca the following day was cancelled. In a statement, the cruise line and RSVP said, “Our port agent in Casablanca has advised us that authorities in Morocco have—despite previous confirmations—now denied our scheduled visit. For all of us, this is a very disappointing development.” The joint statement noted that “It was ultimately the decision by local authorities in Morocco that has necessitated us to adjust our plans.” The Nieuw Amsterdam sailed from Barcelona, Spain, on Friday, with a passenger list consisting mainly of Americans and Europeans.

But as Judith Pindell, the Director of Public Policy for the AIDS Taskforce explained, “When the driver realized that he was going to be driving for the gay pride parade, he stormed off and drove away, leaving us without a float.” Witnesses say the driver shouted obscenities as he left. “It was really hard for us because today is so much about equal rights for all, and the celebration of difference and the important of acknowledging who you are, and for him to drive away and kind of leave us high and dry was disappointing,” said Tracey Jones, CEO of the AIDS Taskforce. Despite this, members of the organization located a replacement truck, and won first-place for “best float.”

Among the measures under consideration are demands to confirm the religion’s traditional definition of marriage, as between a man and a woman, along with calls to change that definition to reflect a relationship between “two people,” as well as a proposal to allow Presbyterian ministers to perform same sex marriage rites in states where marriage equality is legal. Last year, the denomination voted to permit the ordination of persons who are in openly gay relationships as ministers and lay clergy.

Although officials say that Berry was not involved in the actual hazing incident, he did knowledge of it, and had failed to report it to superiors. Documents indicate that the torment was directed at a sailor who reported that he was attacked by another man while in port at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. The person allegedly pulled a knife and tried to rape the sailor, who afterwards endured hazing for months. Among other things, the sailor was referred to as “Brokeback”—a reference to “Brokeback Mountain”— and someone posted the drawing of a stick figure being sexually assaulted. Prior to a group training session about the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” the sailor was asked when other sailors could meet his boyfriend, and whether his boyfriend was Filipino, the nationality of the person who tried to rape him. In 2011, following eight months of harassment, the sailor wrote a note describing his suicidal thoughts, and warning that he could snap and hurt himself or others. which is a contribution of $1,500 to $2,499. Our “Silver” level is $2,500 to $4,999. “Gold” level is a contribution of $5,000 to $9,999. The “Diamond” is set at $10,000 to $14,999, and our “Platinum” level is $15,000 and above.” “One of the things about us is that if you want to leave money to several organizations—let’s say the Pride Center, Poverello, and Broward House, as examples—you can express the amount for each organization, and we will disperse that money for you—I hate to say ‘upon your departure,’ but that’s what it comes down to,” he notes, in a manner that’s almost apologetic. “Every dime that we bring in stays in our community, hence the name ‘Our Fund,’” Timaraos explains. “When someone wills us money, we keep it

in the community, and dispense it in that manner. For example, let’s say someone leaves $500,000, and they specify a certain organization to receive that money. Perhaps that puts the donation level over a certain amount that may cause them to lose other federal, state, or local funds. “What we do is we send that money over a period of time, as to not compromise other incomes.

Let’s face it, right now all of the nonprofits are suffering, due to budget cuts. What we do is perfectly legal, and we don’t want to see any of the LGBT organizations get hurt. They all are doing so much good work, the last thing that we want to do is limit their ability to continue to serve a community that is in need,” he adds. have always been of “two minds” with respect to holidays that fall mid-week, as Fourth of July does this year. Is it better to get a break in the middle of your work week, or do you prefer those three(or four!) day weekends? Either way, the weather promises to make this weekend a great postIndependence Day one, and we have all the happenings in South Florida, this week, OUT in Florida. A holiday weekend is the perfect time—and excuse!—to exercise your taste buds, and Richard David Chamberlain offers you a great excuse to sample one of North Federal Highway’s gems: Lemongrass Asian Bistro, this week in Dining. Do you have a license for those “guns?” More to the point, are you “packing” arms that look like bazookas—or water pistols? Fitness writer (and trainer) Tom Bonanti has all you need to know to get yourself “armed and ready” (and dangerous). Check out reviews of the new Maroon 5 disc, with Grant James in The SCENE. And Chef Jean Doherty has a delicious Recipe, which brings a new take on an old side dish friend.

The Big Island

Land Of Good Eats and Reef Treats By ROBERT ELIAS DEATON

A

ll good things must come to an end, and so it is with our final installment of travel within the Hawaiian Islands. No island adventure on Hawaiian soil is complete without experiencing at least one luau. And the one we remember most fondly is the Royal Kona Resort’s Lava Legends & Legacies - Journeys of the South Pacific Luau (75-5852 Alii Drive Kailua-Kona, HI 96740, 808-329-3111). It is a feast of tropical delicacies, song, and dance celebrating the legends and lore of Polynesia. More than that, it is an incredible sunset experience at one of the most perfect spots on all of Kailua Bay. The featured dish, of course, is the roasted whole Kalua pig, cooked in an underground imu oven. Accompanying entrees include island fish with black bean sauce, island chicken, Lomi Lomi Salmon, and Pulehu (teriyaki) beef. The torch lighting begins on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 6:15 p.m. with an open bar from 5-7 p.m. Fire dancers, hula dancers, and ukulele musicians make for a perfect blend of culture, entertainment and great all-you-can-eat dining. (Well worth the price at $65.00.) Our local guru of all things Big Island, Uncle Don Sanders, called in to say that his own personal favorite gay-owned private tour is Kapohokine Adventures (808-964-1000), on the Hilo side of the island. Kapohokine offers a variety of zip-line experiences, volcano lava tours, hiking, waterfalls, complete with a chicken barbecue on a macadamia

nut farm. Some tours last as long as 12 hours, so some advanced planning is needed for this one. Uncle Don says “Personal, private, super fantastic, fascinating guides, and places you’ll never forget.” Lest you missed it—fascinating guides. For those whose idea of fun includes a snorkel dive, remember Dolphin Discoveries (808-3228000). Word from the scene is that this is a mom and pop operation that will yacht you to their secret dive destinations by Zodiac boats. The tour includes snorkel gear in case you’re traveling light, with sea caves, coral reefs and pods of wonderfully charismatic dolphins. If you have a free Wednesday evening, we highly recommend an Evening at Kahua Ranch (808-882-7954). This tour is headquartered on an historic 8,500 acre working cattle ranch located 3,200 feet above sea level in the Kohala Mountains. The ranch provides

transportation for area hotels, with buffet, beer, wine, singing, line dancing and cute paniolos (Hawaiian cowboys) Closer to Kona town, Big Island Grill (75-5702 Kuakini Hwy, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740, 808-3261153) is a local secret that serves up huge portions at reasonable prices. With all the décor of a Hawaiian diner, this place puts the emphasis of delicious. Try the Saimin for a brothy noodle soup that doesn’t overload you with salt. For larger-thanlife appetites, there’s a always the loco moco— three kinds of meat served on a platter the size of Dodge Pickup. For more traditional fare, you can’t go wrong with kalua pig and cabbage. For a short two-hour side trip across ancient lava flows, head north along Highway 19 north, stopping at Hapuna Beach for a swim. Continue

past the Mauna Kea Beach Resort another two miles and branch off on Highway 270 into Kawaihae town (don’t blink). Stop for a bit at Café Pesto (61-36653 Hawaii 270) for our favorite Crispy Coconut Crusted Calamari served on a slaw of arugula, won bok and pickled ginger (14.95). And while you’re there, say hi to chef “Moki” Tavares. Continue north, and you’ll discover the hidden secret of Mahukona, with its old sugar cane port, broken down pier and perfect beach-side snorkeling. A hui hou.H

Armed and Ready FOR THE SUMMER

W

By TOM BONANTI

hether you are the long and lean type or a compact bear-tank, you’ve got to admit that a great set of guns (arms) will capture just about everyone’s attention. Now that summertime is upon us, its time to flex and bulge with the best of them. This week let’s devote a little time to strengthening and building biceps, the front of the upper arms. Some muscle groups such as back and chest need to be exercised with many movements, some others with a few. For building biceps, the curl is just about the only exercise you can do, and it’s all you really need for mounds of upper-arm power. The four exercises I refer to this week comprise a thorough biceps workout. I like to superset biceps with triceps and shoulders on the same day, twice a week, with three days rest between workouts. I also like to work biceps along with chest. I try not to do back and biceps on the same day because when you work back really hard (with four or five movements) you are already blasting biceps pretty well. The front barbell curl is perfect for taking the biceps through their full range of motion. Stand grasping a barbell or EZ curl bar palms up in front of the thighs. Proceed to

curl the bar up until the biceps meet your forearms. Pause, squeeze the positive upper contraction extra hard, then lower in a slow deliberate manner to starting position to get the benefit of the negative phase of the movement. Perform three sets of eight to twelve repetitions. Make sure to stretch your biceps between each set. Stretching between sets during any weight training session will aid recovery and speed growth by bringing extra

right hand. Proceed to curl the weight up until biceps meets forearm. Pause, squeeze the contraction, and then slowly lower to starting position. Perform eight to twelve reps, and then switch the weight to the left hand for another set. Perform three sets with each arm. Don’t be surprised if one biceps is stronger or bigger than the other, this exercise will help promote symmetry and allow the weaker muscle to catch up.

blood to tired stressed muscle fibers. Standing dumbbell curls are great for exercising each biceps separately. Stand grasping a dumbbell palm forward in the

Concentration dumbbell curls allow you to isolate each biceps and make it work hard without the help of the other muscle groups. Kneeling on the left knee, grasp a dumbbell

palm up in the right hand just off the floor, elbow against the inner right thigh. Proceed to curl the weight up until bicep meets forearm. Squeeze and pause, then lower to starting position slowly. Perform eight to twelve reps, and then switch the weight to the left hand for another set kneeling on the right knee. Perform three sets with each arm. Isometric presses allow you to stretch, work and pose at the same time! Standing, curl the right arm to a 90-degree angle, then grasp the wrist with the left hand. Press down with the left hand while the right hand pushes up, feeling the biceps contract. Hold for 20 seconds, then release. Perform five repetitions, then swap arms. Biceps are always fun to work because as the smallest muscle group of the anterior upper body, they are naturally going to show results easier and quickly. Always pay attention to form and don’t overdo the amount of weight. I hope this basic routine will light a fire under your summer workouts and keep you armed and ready for all the season’s fun. H

LEMONGRASS ASIAN BISTRO Harmony by the Plateful By RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN

H

appiness. It’s the first thing we felt when walking through the front door of Lemongrass, the Asian fusion bistro on North Federal Highway. The host was smiling, the servers were laughing, and the sushi chef was animated in this oasis from stress. That this is a chain of restaurants (there are others in Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and Boynton Beach), makes this magical feat that much more impressive. The happiness we felt re-established itself as harmony, when we actually settled into our seats at a table under a crystal chandelier. There is a certain peace about this place, an elegant simplicity that translates smoothly into the food served here.

Bento Lunch Box

There is a section of the menu called “Small Plates from the Kitchen,” that actually contains several very nice portioned dishes, big enough for two. We especially enjoyed the Thai Steamed Dumpling ($7), eight healthy sized dumplings made from seasoned minced pork with a scrumptious sweet sauce and scattered sesame seeds. For something a little richer, we recommend the Lobster Shrimp Shumai ($9), Hong-Kong style, which interprets into delicious and succulent, in a paper-thin pouch. One of the best bargains on the entire menu finds itself in this category as well: Miso Sea Bass ($12), a lightly grilled Chilean sea bass served with baby pickled ginger, drizzled with a miso-honey glaze. 美味的 měiwèi de. Experimenting among the offerings at the Sushi Bar, we happened upon Tuna Guacamole ($12). Admittedly we were more curious than hungry by this point. But when this dish arrived, we were soon savoring every bit of the seared Cajun tuna and Chinese guacamole served on top of fried crispy wonton, with black tobiko (cavier colored with squid ink) and jalapeno. The subtle flavors encased in Lemongrass Noodle Soup ($13) are a challenge for the palate to discern. Easily identified in this large

asy, delicious, healthy. This recipe is so customizable, you should feel free to use your imagination and change out for the veggies you love. Here are the basics: Ingredients: • • • • • • • •

1 head of cauliflower, cut into florets Salt Freshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons of butter 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour 2 cups of milk 1 pinch of grated nutmeg 3/4 cup of freshly grated Gruyere, divided

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Cook the cauliflower florets in a large pot of boiling salted water for five to six minutes, until tender but still firm. Drain. While they’re cooking, make your bechamel: melt the butter in a medium saucepan over low heat. Add the flour, stirring constantly with a whisk for two minutes. Pour the milk into the butter-flour mixture, and stir until it comes to a boil. Boil, whisking constantly, for one minute, or until thickened. Remove from, add the salt, pepper, nutmeg, and the Gruyere.

Place the drained cauliflower in your “gratin” dish, and pour the sauce evenly on top. Take the remaining ¼ cup of Gruyere and sprinkle on top. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the top is browned. Serve hot in the “gratin” dish with the meat or fish of your choice. You are the chef!

Although born in Dublin, Ireland, chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

bowl of spicy broth were shrimps, scallops, mussels, squid, scallions, tomatoes and mushrooms. The rest is a secret recipe only the chef knows and will not share. One taste of this delicious soup and you’ll know why. It takes a great Asian restaurant to deliver perfectedly prepared fish from the kitchen. In this case, we cannot speak well enough of Holy Snapper ($25), an entire boneless snapper fish, fried and topped with a sweet garlic chili sauce. Accompanied by a house salad and brown rice, this dish easily serves two, with enough remaining to take home to the cat. Authentic Thai Curry is not easy to find, and while the version served at Lemonsgrass is not strictly old school, the lingering flavor on the taste buds after completing a plate of Red Curry with Shrimp ($16) was of sweet coconut milk. While not the best bargain on the menu, it is a huge portion, so plan according to the size of your appetite. Other curry options available include Green Curry, Panang Curry and Masaman Curry—all offered at the same price point.

Lobster Shrimp Shumai Between 11:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. daily, Lemongrass Asian Bistro offers lunch specials, most running around $7.95, including a startlingly sassy Kung Pao Chicken with mixed vegetables and peanuts served on white rice. And if your thought is take-out, imagine if you will a Bento Lunch Box, with fried gyozo, four pieces of sushi or sashimi, chicken teriyaki and a house salad for a measly $11.95. It will make you forget the nearby fast food choices, when a call in advance will have this taste-treat available for pick-up in ten minutes. Either way, tell them Guy Magazine sent you.H

Déjà, Vu? By DALE MADISON

Awards and Accolades for a PRIDE-ful Entertainer

D

éjà Devonier is one of those high energy individuals who can keep everyone on their feet and clapping when she is on stage. Déjà won the “Miss Stonewall” competition, which was held on June 17 at Bill’s Filling Station in Wilton Manors, to celebrate the Stonewall Summer Pride and Twilight Parade. Déjà isn’t shy about her reasons for getting into the entertainment business. “It was a twofold process,” she recalls. “First, it’s a true inspiration to get people into the show when you’re on stage.” She paused, before adding with a laugh, “And to be totally frank, the money.” “Miss Stonewall was especially important to me for this celebration,” she says. “As you know, the police in New York for so long hassled the gay community, and then that fateful June night in 1969, the ‘sisters’ had enough. They held the police at bay for nearly 24 hours, and the police finally relented, and thus began what we now know as the Gay Rights Movement. They paved the way for us, and provided a forum for us to not live in fear for our lives, and our lifestyle.” The entertainer had a firm strategy in mind for how she was going to win the Miss Stonewall gold. “I started out with a rainbow bathing suit, which I thought was appropriate considering it was PRIDE. The suit was designed by the one and only Erika Norell. I decided early on that I was in this to win it. For my entertainment, I did the song ‘Fly’ by Rihanna and Nicki Minaj, and the crowd went wild.”

“My gown competition was sponsored by Torpedo Bar, where on Sunday it’s known as ‘Déjà Jams,’ and I serve as the host. The gown was a sweetheart cut designed by Sherri Hill, and was black and silver. For talent, I did Tina Turner’s ‘Fool in Love’ and, of course, ‘Proud Mary.’ She was a great inspiration to me growing up. I used to work in a small club, and started out doing ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It?’” The entertainer has plans for her reigning year as Miss Stonewall. “I plan to promote awareness for the transgender community, and the illuswionist/ entertainment community. There are lots of people out there promoting the male gay community, but not so much with the ‘Tran’ community.” That doesn’t mean she’s forgotten her boy “sisters.” “I’ll be passing out condoms among gay men, as I am a member of this community, and I want to be out there doing everything that I can. I also want to represent South Florida at events at other cities around the state, and to show what we offer here in Greater Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors,” she adds. As for Miss Stonewall’s other plans for her crown, and her next twelve months, “I also want to work on organizing next year’s pageant, as this is a very prestigious title. Many people don’t know that I am a competitive swimmer, and I want to qualify to the next Gay Olympics.” She is philosophical about herself and about the future. “The choices we make, shall dictate the life we shall live.” Like the 1969 LGBT rights pioneers who have inspired her, the reigning Queen of the Gayborhood’s Stonewall knows there are challenges to come, both for herself and the LGBT community at large, but, in this too, she is philosophical. “It’s not what you go through,” she notes, “it’s how you come out of it.” H
