Arrested for Sex with Minors Former TV Weatherman Rob Lopicola Taken by U.S. Marshals By CLIFF DUNN

WILTON MANORS – On Monday, U.S. Marshals arrested former WPTV Channel 5 weatherman Robert J. Lopicola, on charges of sexual activity with minors, lewd and lascivious battery, computer pornography, and child exploitation. Lopicola, 42, was supposed to be arraigned on Tuesday morning in Palm Beach County court, but because he did not have legal representation, the hearing was postponed until this morning. At press time, he was expected to plead not guilty. According to Lopicola’s probable cause affidavit, two teenage boys told authorities that, sometime between August 2010 and January 2011, they had engaged in sexual activity with Lopicola, whom they met through Craigslist ads. According to reports, one of the boys, who lived in Boca Raton, was 15 years old at the time. The other, from West Palm Beach, was 17 at the time. Investigators say that the first boy, now 16, came forward to report the battery after moving to live with his uncle in Michigan. Arrest documents say that he was initially reluctant to report the sexual activity, but told Michigan authorities that he believes Lopicola would hurt others if he didn’t come forward. Lopicola was employed at West Palm Beach television station WPBT Channel 5 for eight years. He abruptly resigned from the station in 2006 without

explanation. A 2009 Palm Beach Post blog noted about “his mysterious departure” that “there was no cake, no two weeks’ notice.” He moved to Wilton Manors about a year ago, and was a regular sight on Wilton Drive—powerwalking and doing push-ups on the corner near his house on Northeast 7 Avenue—as well as at his most recent job, working as a dancer “wrangler” at the Boardwalk Bar. According to the probable cause affidavit, the first teen met Lopicola after placing an ad on Craigslist. In his ad, the boy lied and claimed that he was 18 years old, but he told authorities he later admitted to Lopicola that he was 15. The arrest report alleges that the two had a sexual encounter in Lopicola’s car near the teenager’s home. Documents say that after moving to Michigan, the teen complied with a request by Lopicola to text nude pictures of himself. He told authorities, “Robert probably likes real young boys, and would hurt others if he didn’t’ tell.”

Lopicola in 2005 The arrest report—which graphically describes the alleged encounters— says that Lopicola’s other victim was a 17-year-old junior at Palm Beach Lakes High School, who lived in West Palm Beach. Investigators say that when the boy’s mother came home, she found Lopicola hiding in the shower, which prompted her to notify police. Under Florida Statute 794.05(1), “A person 24 years of age or older who engages in sexual activity with a person 16 or 17 years of age commits a felony of the second degree,” with “sexual activity” defined as “oral, anal, or vaginal penetration by, or union with, the sexual organ of another.”H

PALM BAY - A state appeals court ruled last month that a Brevard County man can sue his pastor for defamation of character, after the minister told his congregation that the man is gay and that his upcoming marriage is a sham, designed to hide his homosexuality. According to court documents, Darrel Bilbrey became a member of First Pentecostal Church of South Brevard, in Palm Bay, in 2007, and became a protégé to its pastor, David Myers, who sponsored him in obtaining a minister’s certification. At one point, Myers asked if Bilbrey was gay, which he denied. Bilbrey alleges that Myers then falsely accused him of being homosexual during a sermon, as well as in conversation with the father of Bilbrey’s fiancée. Bilbrey filed suit against Myers and First Pentecostal for defamation. The pastor defended himself on First Amendment grounds, citing the “church-autonomy doctrine,” also called the religious-autonomy principle, which states that courts lack jurisdiction in church matters. A lower court agreed with Myers, ruling that the church-autonomy doctrine called for dismissing Bilbrey’s lawsuit. But on June 29, the Court of Appeals for Florida’s 5th Judicial District reinstated the defamation claim, stating that lower courts are divided in their application of the church-autonomy doctrine.H

Google Tells World to “Gay Up” and Retailers Go for the Gays By joe harris

O

n Saturday, Internet giant Google launched its “Legalize Love” initiative, with a purpose, according to dot429.com, “of inspiring countries to legalize marriage for lesbian, gay, and bisexual people around the world.” Although initially targeting Poland and Singapore, Google plans to expand the campaign to every country where it conducts business—so pretty much everywhere, except perhaps North Korea—focusing on areas with

homophobic history, laws, and culture. According to a company rep, “We want our employees who are gay or lesbian or transgender to have the same experience outside the office as they do in the office. It is obviously a very ambitious piece of work.” That spokesperson told dot429. com, “Singapore wants to be a global financial center and world leader and we can push them on the fact that being a global center and a world leader means you have to treat all

people the same, irrespective of their sexual orientation.” The corporate dominoes are falling, ever falling, with Retail America focusing their efforts on the lucrative LGBT market, and its attractive buying power. JCPenney, which flexed its gay muscles when it hired openly gay Ellen DeGeneres as its spokeswoman, also debuted an ad in its May catalog featuring a lesbian couple, and followed up in June with a gay Fathers Day-themed campaign. (The JCP catalog is received monthly by 14 million consumers.) The retailer also sponsored a float in last month’s New York Gay Pride parade. Macy’s Inc. also has a long record of supporting LGBT rights and of advertising in gay media (including the Agenda). Last month, discount giant Target began selling greeting cards marketed to same-sex couples, including such fare as a wedding card that reads “Mr. & Mr.” It was just two years ago that the retail chain was condemned by LGBT activists for contributing $150,000 to conservative politicalaction committee MN Forward, which

supported Republican Tom Emmer, a gay marriage opponent who was a candidate for Governor of Minnesota. In addition to its commitment to social responsibility, LGBT spending power is an attractive incentive for major retailers to “come out.” According to Witeck Combs Consulting, approximately 16 million gay adult Americans possess an estimated spending power this year of $790 billion. That translates to $49,000 per capita in greenbacks for Pink America.H

Why Coming Out Matters JULY 11, 2012 • ISSUE 138

CLIFF DUNN, EDITOR

I

t is a function, I think, of getting older, that one’s stream of consciousness occasionally overflows the levees, and a conversation you are having today quickly melds in your right-brain with one you had 20 years ago. This was precisely the case this week, when a discussion I was having about coming out shifted my memory back two decades, to a conversation I had with my friend, Shane Gunderson, longtime advocate and activist for the homeless, the incarcerated, and for LGBT rights. Precisely 20 years ago, Shane and I served on the Central Committee for the Florida Young Democrats, and during our 1992 state convention at the Bahia Mar in Fort Lauderdale— sometime between long island ice teas and tequila shots (hey, we were in our 20s)—we came around to discussing the phenomenon of “outing” gay celebrities against their will. I recall being vehement in opposing the idea of breaching someone’s privacy, in order to make a point about social transparency and to strike a blow for civil rights. I don’t want to put words into Shane’s mouth, especially after such a long passage of time, but I remember his appeal to a “greater good” that could be accomplished by public awareness of the sexual orientation of movie stars, musical performers, athletes, and others celebrities.

Now, mind you, this was in 1992. The world looked a lot different to me then than it does now. But those superficial differences—which wouldn’t gain the notice of the Grand Canyon, were it to care about such things—are really only skindeep. Although I think the world is a better place for LGBT persons today than it was then, we still have a long way to go. That summer of my conversation with Shane, Matthew Shepard was still 15 years old, full of wonder and the promise of a life that would be cut tragically short a little less than six years later. Is the world better for me than it was for Matt Shepard? Yes. Was his individual world much different from that of other young gays who struggle today for acceptance and the right to enjoy their full measure of civil rights? I’m not so certain. Although the clownish Fred Phelps is a source of embarrassment and ridicule—even among those who agree with the context of his message, if not its delivery—we still must contend with such moronicisms as the nameless—and tasteless—L.A. preacher who heckled Gay Pride marchers last month, yelling “The penis doesn’t belong in the anus,” and “Stop eating your poo-poo.” I can chuckle at the absurdity of it all, from the safety of my soapbox here in the gayest gay village of them all—until I remember that this idiot-of-the-cloth is using the same hyperbolic language that pastors in African nations use to whip up the tribes (so to speak) against LGBT persons. The difference, of course, between Rev. Moron (U.S.) and Rev.

Moron (Uganda) is that you and I can drown our delicate sensibilities at Matty’s or Bill’s, while the reality on the ground for Africans is— horrifically—different. To say that “Matthew Shepard Lives” is to very accurately portray the daily dangers with which LGBT persons live in Africa, the continent that birthed us all. One doesn’t need to travel to the Dark Continent to hear this kind of bigotry and hatred spouted at an unsuspecting audience. Recall the case of North Carolina pastor Sean Harris, who advised, “Dads, the second you see your son dropping the limp wrist, you walk over there and crack that wrist. Man up. Give him a good punch. Ok?” This is 2012, not 1992, but the vitriol is still real. You would think that Matt Shepard had never lived. Or died. I’m not certain I’ve gotten any less squeamish in the intervening years about outing someone—celebrity or otherwise—against their will. But I know now what Shane knew then: In the big picture, and for the “greater good,” Anderson Cooper coming out last week will add to the lasting impact of the way society at large views LGBT persons. Every person who doesn’t come out sends a message that there is something inherently wrong with being who—and what— we are. I cannot help but wonder if the hypothetical coming out during the 1970s, 1980s, or 1990s of that era’s biggest closeted names might not have had a profound impact on a future we now view as the past. Matthew Shepard might wonder the same thing.H

Matchmaker Paul Angelo,

and the Science of Gay Low Self Esteem By Phoebe Moses

L

ife coach Paul Angelo, MHA, MBA, says that gay men need to look at their self-esteem from the unique perspective of their lifestyle. In doing so, he offers the possibility of falling in love to the accompaniment of a 25-pound weight loss. (Is there a downside to this?) Angelo, who began to offer life coaching services professionally in 2009, has identified an orientation-specific condition he refers to as Gay Low Self-Esteem (GLSE). It isn’t something that you will find listed, though, in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). “GLSE is not found in the DSM, nor is it a clinical diagnosis,” Angelo emphasizes. “Because of the preponderance of ‘straight’ psychology and therapy, gay life-related issues are poorly understood, and measured only in the context of HIV and AIDS.” Angelo says that when men are in a challenging environment, they grow faster and develop more creative problem-solving skills. Their confidence and sense of accomplishment increase, which he says simultaneously lifts their self-esteem, and brings them a feeling of satisfaction and well-being. These are potent weapons to have in one’s arsenal, especially in

a world where the game is stacked against the “gay.” “GLSE is different because it is ingrained into the gay culture and the identity of a gay man today,” Angelo notes. “Today it is almost impossible to be gay and have high self esteem without extensive coaching or therapy. So GLSE is the reason why HIV incidence will

Angelo says overcoming low self-esteem is connected with the qualities possessed by champion athletes and those who are successful in the field of romance. He has developed a 12week high-performance program to enhance self-esteem and encourage better health, based upon the principles of accountability, motivation, and coaching, designed to bring

out the “killer instinct” in gay men who have confidence or self-esteem issues. “Losing weight can be a boring task but when you combine it with the fun aspect of dating and

starting a relationship, exercise and proper nutrition can become fun and engaging,” Angelo says. Angelo worked in the fitness industry for over 25 years, starting out as a personal trainer, and moving into hospital healthcare administration. He trained with the American College Of Sports Medicine, and studied healthcare administration as part of his Master’s program. He says that health advice and marketing methods can collide, and often serve the business instead of the consumer, resulting in the consumer hurting himself, or becoming convinced of the existence of a magic pill. Angelo’s gay matchmaking and life coaching teaches gay men over 40 how to lose weight, because he says it is easier to find the right match when one looks and feels better. His 12-week intensive high-performance gay group coaching program teaches gay men over 40 how to turn short term results into a mindset for a long-term healthy and happy life. “High quality gay men are out there available for relationships, but they will not settle for the average Joe,” Angelo adds. “And while the looks matter, it is also crucial to know how to make your partner feel good, and how to build intimacy with a new date.” For more information, visit paulangelo.com.H

Poverello/Friends Fitness By DALE MADISON

W

hen Poverello was established in 1986, its mission—and that of Father Bill—was to make sure that those South Florida men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS were fed. Father put his talk into his walk, many times delivering food out of his car to make sure that their nutritional needs were met. Nearly three decades later, although budget cuts have made it necessary for the Poverello Center to reduce client services, the organization’s

mission and focus haven’t changed. With the assistance of the City of Wilton Manors, Poverello moved its Friends Fitness Center to a new and larger location. CEO Tom Smith says, “We have made the gym grow from 2,000 square feet to almost 4,000 square feet. The clients are so happy to have more space. We now have a central reception area, and we have added office space that is available for other non-profits and not-for-profit organizations,” which he notes includes phone and internet capability.

Smith says that Poverello has experienced the larger economic crunch, as well as the additional costs of relocation, but he is optimistic. “It’s been a tough year with the expenses of the move, the build out—and we had to let four staff members go due to the economy, but we are on our way back. The Thrift Store income is increasing, and the whole team has pulled together. We will make it,” he adds. “As we grow, our mission will include more individuals with other life threatening illnesses.” Poverello will host its 22nd Annual Bowl-A-Thon on Saturday, August 11, at the Sawgrass Lanes in Tamarac. Complimentary coach services will be provided to and from the event. For more information, including organizing a team, visit poverello.org.

public accommodation on the basis of sexual orientation. Lesbians and gays got worked into a lather, along with quite a few straights, and got Amendment 2 overturned in the U.S. Supreme Court, but not before tourism went down the toilet and the state was judged the black hole of bigotry and injustice. Well, we’re happy to report, things are quite a bit better today in Denver as well as other parts of Colorado, though Colorado Springs and its neighbors were hit by raging forest fires last month that are still not completely extinguished. Other than some blow-by smoke, Denver, Queen City of the West, was undamaged. Your visit to Denver begins by landing in one the world’s most elegant and picturesque airports, Denver International. Because it has been built to handle future business, it always feels half full, which is a good thing, and allows you plenty of time to check the art and concourse restaurants and businesses. When clearing security at Cheesman Park (the “gayest park in Denver”), the starting point of Denver’s gay pride parade Denver International always

ention Denver, and everyone always has some story to tell. Like the time the city bid for the 1976 Winter Games, and then turned down the Games after winning the honor once they found out how much it would cost! (Innsbruck, Austria ended up hosting the Games.) Or how about the one that showcases Denver as “the pride of the Rockies,” even though the mountain chain ends just west of the city, which is actually located on the grassy plains. And then, of course, there was that ugly period in the 90s when Colorado passed Amendment 2, which allowed for discrimination in employment, housing, and

try to go through Terminal A. It’s the least crowded and all terminals are connected by a tram that zips you around the entire place in a few minutes. Our favorite hotel in the city isn’t the largest, but simply the best. It’s the Brown Palace Hotel and Spa (321 17th Street), and, built in 1908, has one of this country’s first atrium designs. While the rooms are as-you’d-expect spectacular, it is the spa at the Brown that keeps us coming back. We particularly like the Gentlemen’s Body Treatment Imagine, if you will, 50 minutes of Deep Tissue Massage followed by a half-hour full body sugar exfoliation. (It may cost $155, but when you’re finished, you’ll feel 20 years younger and want to move in.) The hotel is in the downtown area, near everything, including a gay bar--Denver Wrangler (1700 Logan Street), a cross between a cow palace, a bear barn, and a rodeo roundup. The slogan here is “Where Real Men Come to Drink.” Just southeast of downtown is Cheesman

tress. Just the sound of the word can evoke stress into our life. Stress can come from anywhere if you allow it— and most of us do, like it or not, particularly in the current economic environment. During stressful times people usually change their diet and eating habits. Most choose not to eat when stressed out and only add to the strain on the body by putting it in starvation mode, ultimately storing more fat. Sugary foods cause insulin levels to spike up and down. Those sugary foods then create an extreme high and an extreme low, making the person feel like their energy is going to crash, only to want to eat again. Being on low energy and while being stressed out is the double whammy. There is a much better way to handle your stress, and it can come right through your diet. There are a few superfoods out there that can help reduce stress in the body while at the same time being good for you and your balanced diet. Try some of these superfoods and improve your mental state with some good mood food. Asparagus is a great way to help relieve stress and stabilize your mood. Eating this food and other vegetables high in vitamins

and minerals such as folic acid and B vitamins aids the body in the release of serotonin. Serotonin is a hormone that when released effects your mood in a positive way, creating a pleasurable feeling and a more stabilized mood. A recommended serving of asparagus is seven cooked spears at least a ½” thick, and totals only 25 calories! Beef is another good mood food even though it often gets a bad rap. Beef contains high levels of B vitamins, iron and zinc, which are also known to help stabilize moods. Beef is very nutrient-rich compared to chicken. If you are worried about the fat content, ask the butcher for a leaner cut of red meat. A proper portion size for dinner helps as well. One cup of lean ground beef at 137 calories is a recommended serving size. Compare this to the 310 calories in a cup of regular ground beef. Milk is high in antioxidants, calcium, protein, B2 and B12 vitamins. Throw some low-fat milk in your bowl of whole grain cereal with fresh berries and you have yourself one stress-fighting chance to start your day off right. Cottage cheese is high in calcium and protein. Foods with protein that are not loaded with sugar do not spike our blood

sugars. Throw in a handful of fresh mixed fruit high in vitamin C and this becomes one stress-relieving dish. Plus, think of all the helpful antioxidants we will receive, ridding the body of free radicals that can cause cancer. Almonds may sound a bit nutty, but they are a good source of vitamins B, E, magnesium and zinc. All of these vitamins will help stabilize mood and are a good source of healthy fats. Tuna is another great stress-fighter that is also high in B vitamins, healthy fats and low-fat protein. Only use enough light mayo to bind your ingredients in tuna salad. Overloading tuna with heavy, fat-laden mayo will only have an adverse effect. While stress will never leave our lives completely, armed with the knowledge of foods that help you feel great, you can and should keep it at bay. And a happier body helps maintain a happier mind, compliments of Andy.

Park where the annual gay pride parade begins. No surprise there, since it’s the “gayest” park in Denver and the neighborhood surrounding it is fabulous. What will come as a shock to even locals is that the whole place used to be a cemetery whose location soon made the land more valuable than for what the plots could be sold. That’s what we love about Denver, a few snaps of the fingers and hundred dollar bills, and bodies were being transplanted and posies planted in their place. While Cherry Creek is the most elegant neighborhood, the most fun section is definitely Stapleton. Located just east of downtown, where Stapleton Airport used to be, it’s been totally redeveloped by the gays, who renamed the place Gaypleton in their honor. That’s what happens when you take over the place. Next week, we’ll cover outdoor activities in the region, and the favorite secret spot in the whole city. Yes, you’ll have to wait.

My Forever Babycakes By DR. ARLEN LEIGHT

I

unexpectedly lost my partner-in-life on Memorial Day. We met in 1980 and, as relationships always do, ours evolved and changed over the passing years. Charles was the love of my life, and I miss him dearly. It’s hard to imagine my life without him. My professional career and my book, coming out later this year, grew out of the successes and the challenges of our 32-year connection. The following is the eulogy I gave at his funeral service held in the small town where he grew up in Tennessee. Being gay is not something folks in this community openly talk about. I chose my words and message in a way that would honor Charles, and respect the sensitivities of the attendees. I realized that what I learned from Charles and our relationship were universal in scope, and could in no way offend my fellow mourners.

So, I thought I might take this column to bring them to you. I hope I can always live up to these ideals, and I hope they have meaning for you: “Charles was not a man of many words, but he was my greatest teacher. I’d like to share with you the 10 most important lessons he taught me by the grace and dignity of his life. 1. Being honest with yourself is absolutely necessary to being honest with others. 2. Trust is the most important aspect of all relationships. 3. True love is unconditional, comes from the heart—not from the head—and is given freely without any expectation about receiving anything in return. 4. Silence is golden. 5. Peace of mind is happiness. 6. The more we judge, the less we love.

7. We learn when we are listening, not when we are talking. 8. Forgiving ourselves and forgiving others are among the greatest gifts we can give to ourselves. 9. Life, like relationships, is not about how long it lasts, but, rather, about the love you leave behind. 10. There’s no place like home, because home is where the heart is.” After Charles was laid to rest, family and friends from this Bible Belt town came up to me one-by-one to offer their condolences. By far the single most frequent comment to me was, “I am so grateful Charles had you to love.” I was especially touched by Charles’ great nephew. A tall, good looking guy— about 20 years old, extensively tattooed,

and dressed in the casual attire of his generation—he reminded me of the young Charles I had met 32 years ago. There is definitely a family resemblance, and on three separate occasions he came up to me to shake my hand and say, “I’m really sorry for your loss, man.” Through the rough exterior, I could see the gentle man inside, which is so much about who Charles was. I really appreciate all the expressions of sympathy from friends, family, and loved ones. Everyone described Charles as a warm, gentle soul with a big heart. I am so grateful to have had this wonderful man to love. And I appreciate you giving me the opportunity to share with you the lessons and love of Charles, my Forever Babycakes.

hat a mess! We just walked out of MUGS Sports Grill, and we’re still licking our fingers from the incredible BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich served with onion straws (that should be sold as a separate menu item). Like all great pork barbecue, this one was dripping with taste and was an eight-napkin slop fest of flavor. ($9.95) MUGS is known around the burg as the “Sports Bar with a Chef.” And for a very good reason. This is no simple burger joint with the usual assortment of screaming sports fans and mounds of peanuts in galvanized buckets on a bar sticky with yesterday’s margarita mix. The moment you walk into Mugs, located in a strip mall just east of Target, on East Oakland Park Boulevard, you know you’re in a special place. OMG! Crabcake BLT

By RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN

First, it’s impeccably clean. The light wood floors are as scrubbed as the tables and chairs that are positioned across a large open room surrounded by 15 flat screen TVs the size of St. Louis and peppered about the place like so many poppy seeds on a muffin. As you enter on the left, there is a crowded bar where everyone, even strangers, seem to know one another. The bartenders are friendly and keep up with the flow of orders as if working the assembly line at a Ford plant—all the while keeping up conversation on a dozen different subjects. The menu is a varied one, thanks to the previously mentioned Chef. There are the usual burgers, of which our favorite is definitely Boosh Burger, a juicy patty of beef layered with bacon, sautéed onions, mushrooms and provolone cheese. ($12.95). The buns are locally baked and perfectly toasted and comes with fries. You can, of course, customize the plate with onion rings, tator tots, sautéed onions, mushrooms, applewood smoked bacon and avocado for an additional $1. The sports-fans appetizers included the usual Wings that come as Buffalo, Asian Trifecta, or Barbeque. On Monday night, they go on special for 40¢ each in groups of six. The Coconut

Shrimp are perfectly crisp and moist with a heaping portion serving two priced at $11.95. The sandwich menu is an assortment of unique specialties that include Crabcake BLT (a thick cake made from jumbo lump crab, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and a superb housemade romoulde for $12.95). The crabcakes are also available as an entrée served over a bed of sautéed garlic spinach and a loaded baked potato ($16.95). Mugs also serves a surprising tender and flavorful Chicken Marsala with chicken breast, sautéed with mushrooms in a perfectly succulent Marsala sauce (for once not too salty), served with penne and broccoli. Clean your plate excellent ($14.95). At lunch, this convenient grill offers $6.50 combination specials that can’t be beat for price or flavor. Choose from Buffalo Chicken Wrap, Blackened Chicken Sandwich, a Cheese Burger, the Pulled Pork Sandwich (a second yum), Chicken Quesadilla, or Caesar Salad with fries. Weekly offerings include the aforementioned Monday night wings; Tuesday night $3.00 tacos in 10 flavors—our favorite was seared tuna but rumor has it that it’s been taken off the menu; and, of course, Happy Hour 4-8

p.m., take your pick of the day. Marc Brandt is the man in charge and runs a top-flight staff and establishment that had managed to remain a hidden secret despite years in the business. It’s time for the LGBT community to swing out of your comfort zone and give this place a try. And, as always, remember to tell them, Florida Agenda sent you.

Starts at the museum at 9 p.m., and ends by 1 a.m. This summer, the Museum of Discovery and Science hosts evening Turtle Walks. The whole family can participate in an evening of discovery while uncovering the natural history and myths of turtles. Nature permitting, participants will have a chance to watch a 300 pound Loggerhead sea turtle venture out of the ocean to lay her eggs. A female loggerhead sea turtle may travel thousands of miles to return to the beach where she hatched as a baby to lay her own eggs as an adult. At 9 p.m., the adventure begins at the Museum of Discovery and Science with an informative hands-on session about turtles (land, fresh water, and salt water) with an expanded focus on sea turtles. The adventure continues to Fort Lauderdale beach where Museum expert guides will lead guests to the sea turtle’s nesting grounds to look for amazing sea turtles. We cannot guarantee a sea turtle will be spotted on every walk but when it does happen it is a natural wonder that no one will ever forget. Guests should be prepared to walk approximately one to two miles, and provide their own transportation and snacks. Advance reservations are required as space is limited. Remaining 2012 dates: July 5, 10, 11, 17, 18, 19, and 24. Admission: $18 for members, $20 for non-members.

he SMART Ride is a two-day bicycle ride that spans 165 miles from Miami to Key West, with this year’s ride scheduled the weekend of November 16 and 17. What began in 2001 as the Walgreens Red Ribbon Ride has grown to one of the state’s premiere events, expected to attract over 600 participants this year. “Since 2004, the ride has raised over $3.3 million,” says longtime participant Carmine Martorilli. “We will start in Pine Crest at Morning Star Catholic Church, and head South for 100 miles, and then overnight at Hawks Cay Resort. Next morning, following breakfast, the teams head out to Key West.” “That first year, I pushed my partner, Robert [Poster], into getting involved, and now he has not only done the ride, but is also involved in helping with the team that supports the riders,” Martorilli recalls. “As of now, there are 560 people registered. That includes riders and crews. Last year, there were 399 riders, and 219 in the support crew. Oh, and by the way, Mr. Madison, you are going to be on the team this year,” he adds. Well, I guess I know where I will be that weekend. The group has a doctor who travels with them, to make sure that any potential injury is handled immediately. “Our physician is Dr. Marah Lee, from Imperial Point Hospital. She actually closes her office and pays her staff for the weekend so that she can be with us,” Martorilli notes with a mixture of pride and affection. “That is the sort of dedication that we have for the SMART Ride. Once we get into Key West, we take over the White Street Pier for the closing ceremony.” The ride attracts all kinds of supporters. “Last year, Leslie Jordan from ‘Will and Grace’ showed up to please the crowd. Once the ‘Riderless Bike’”—which represents riders who have fallen from the scourge of HIV/ AIDS—“shows up, there is not a dry eye on the pier,” Martorilli adds. “This year we have so much help with feeding the teams. The Olive Garden will feed everyone on Friday night. On Saturday morning, Cliff Mulcahy and John Zieba from Rosie’s on Wilton Drive will provide breakfast, and then send their staff on to Key West to provide dinner. This is one of those events that is really supported by the

community, and it is so gratifying to see that kind of support from a community that has lost so many to this disease,” he notes. “In addition, for Labor Day weekend, Shawn and Nick from Courtyard Café will hold a benefit, with a percentage of their total sales going to the SMART Ride. On August 22, Fort Lauderdale’s California Pizza Kitchen will hold a benefit all day, with a percentage of sales benefiting the ride,” Martorilli’s partner, Poster, adds. As usual, the SMART Ride will give back 100 percent of the funds raised by participants to HIV/AIDS service organizations in Florida. The organization recently announced the beneficiaries for this year’s ride: Metro Charities in Tampa, Miracle of Love in Orlando, CAAPS in West Palm Beach, the Pride Center at Equality Park, the Children’s Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Fort Lauderdale, the Center for Positive Living in Miami, and the AIDS Help in Key West. The SMART Ride is truly the gift that keeps on giving. For more information, visit thesmartride.org.
