IS SHE, OR ISN’T SHE? Ex-Staffer Claims She Found Florida Lt Gov in “Compromising Position” with Female Aide Test Examiner Says Accuser “Passed Polygraph” By CLIFF DUNN

TA L L A H A S S E E — F l o r i d a ’ s conservative Republication lieutenant governor finds herself at the center of a political gay ménage a trois between her, a possibly-disgruntled former aide, and a media that eagerly wants to know “What Did the ‘Loo’ Do, and Where Did She Do It? Carletha Cole, a former aide to Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll—as part of the legal defense in her criminal trial—said that she caught her boss in “a compromising position” with another aide, shortly before she was fired in 2011. Cole’s allegations against the state’s second-highest constitutional officer are part of an ongoing prosecution of the ex-staffer, for revealing a recorded conversation between Carroll’s chief of staff and a reporter for the Florida TimesUnion, a Jacksonville newspaper. Cole’s legal motion claims that she interrupted Carroll, 52, and a female staff member in what she implies was an intimate—and lesbian—embrace. “When she entered the office,” the motion reads, “she found the Lieutenant Governor and her Travel Aide, Beatriz Ramos, in what can only be described as a compromising position.” The motion claims that Ramos “jealously hoarded the Lieutenant Governor’s attention in a manner which can only be described as bizarre,” and says that Cole was told to reserve adjoining hotels rooms for Ramos and Carroll. Officials are trying to keep certain records sealed, which prompted the filing of Cole’s motion—which includes the picture of a Machiavellian environment that surrounded Lt. Gov. Carroll, in which her deputies recorded conversations, and in which Carroll herself appeared more concerned with publicity than policy. Cole’s trial was

Carroll vehemently denied allegations of a surreptitious gay work affair, telling Tampa Bay Local 10 television that “black women that look like me don’t engage in relationships like that.” The lieutenant governor also emailed a video to supporters, denying the lesbian rumor. “The problem is that when you have these accusations that come Lt. Asteroid Named for LGBT Rights Pioneer WASHINGTON, D.C. — An asteroid has been named for American LGBT rights pioneer Frank Kameny, who was fired during the 1950s by the U.S. Army for being gay. Kameny, who died last year in Washington, D.C., earned a Ph.D. in astronomy at Harvard University, and worked for the U.S. Army Map Service during the early days of the Cold War between the U.S. and Soviet Union.

After being “outed” and fired, Kameny, who was 86 when he died, took his case to the U.S. Supreme Court. (Homosexuality was viewed at the time as a national security risk, as it was claimed that gays in sensitive military and government positions were subject to blackmail, or to being “turned” by a foreign power.) He later organized the first historic gay rights protests outside the White House and the Pentagon in the 1960s. Astronomer Gary Billings read Kameny’s obituary last year, and submitted a citation to the International Astronomical Union in Paris, and the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Minor Planet Center, hoping to designate “Minor Planet 40463” as “Frankkameny.” The celestial body—which is located in the asteroid belt, with an orbit between Mars and Jupiter—was first discovered in 1999 using longexposure photography, and is visible through a telescope. The published citation officially naming the asteroid reads, “Frank

CLIFF DUNN, EDITOR

A

s a wise man once said—and I later originated it—we have an embarrassment of riches this week, and more material to work with than is polite. To tap an old cigarette slogan, “We’ve come a long way, baby.” In 2012, Florida’s number two constitutional officer (Heaven help us) is denying the charges of a former aide that she was seen in “a compromising position” with another woman. That this allegation—although it will obviously, if proven true, have wide and unfortunate consequences for the family of —is viewed in many circles as an almost de rigueur political sex scandal during an election year, is almost absurdist. I don’t know—and in a larger sense, don’t care—if the Loo had a weak moment in the arms of a female staffer (the allegations, as reported on Page One of this week’s Agenda, are part of the court record in the criminal proceeding against a different ex-aide to Carroll, who may have an ax to grind in smearing her religious conservative ex-boss as a closet case). I also don’t know what her accuser, Carletha Cole, saw—or thought she saw. But I do take what I can only assume is a Schadenfreudeinspired delight in watching Carroll—who opposed LGBT rights during her tenure in the state House, before Rick Scott pulled her

out of the church choir, and tapped her as his L.G.—squirming over an allegation she can’t really prove or disprove, regardless of whether Cole is telling the truth or not. Go ahead, Loo: Quantify a negative. Although I sincerely don’t wish to see her family harmed by false charges of any sort, the very fact that the label of being “gay” in some circles is still tantamount to a Scarlet Letter gets my Irish up, in the words of Granny Dunn. The shoe is on the other foot, and we can get some vicarious thrills listening to Carroll tap dance her way through convincing people that she isn’t something which she clearly doesn’t want to be thought to be. Oh, well. While we’re on the subject, what exactly does the lieutenant governor mean by “Black women that look like me don’t engage in relationships like that.” Which part of this disclaimer is the subject, and which is the predicate? Does she mean “black women” “don’t engage in relationships like that?” Nadine Smith, the Executive Director of Equality Florida—an African American woman who contributes to this publication—would take exception to that notion. Or does the L.G. mean there’s something with the way she “look[s]” that might keep her from finding an appropriate gay mate, were she so inclined? I’m just asking. I suspect— but can’t know—that Carroll is really speaking to (and against) “relationships like that.” Thus, my (slight) expression of joy over her (mild) suffering this week at the

hands of the inquisitors at Tampa Bay Local 10 television. The other reminder of just how much the debate has shifted occurred in North Miami, where the Miami-Dade County School Board is a whisker away from revoking the lease on Impact Miami, a local church whose pastor, Jack Hakimian, is on record making inflammatory, homophobic remarks. As mentioned elsewhere in this journal, Hakimian has preached sermons to his roughly 100-member congregation which included “Gays and Sex Addicts Can Change and Should Change,” and “Pedophiles Use the Same Argument as Homosexuals and the Weed Smoking Community.” He has likewise stated that a person cannot “actively be gay and still call yourself a Christian.” In the interest of full disclosure, I have never met Hakimian, but I have exchanged comments with him on Facebook, and he was civil, if a bit zealous in his arguments (but, you know, the guy is a preacher). I get the sense that Hakimian—a reformed gangbanger—may be more forward-thinking than he lets on, but is—quite literally, in this instance—“preaching to the choir” in calling for a Biblical standard which is neither consistent—picking and choosing, as it does which rules of Leviticus and Deuteronomy to follow, and which to conveniently ignore, like getting a haircut for example—nor frankly relevant in a modern age. Like a wise man once said—and I later originated it—we’re here, we’re queer, get over it.H

Trantalis Announces Fort Lauderdale Commission Run Longtime Fort Lauderdale legal advocate, human rights activist, and former City Commissioner Dean Trantalis filed his notice last week that he’ll seek the District II commission seat, being vacated by Charlotte Rodstrom. Trantalis has practiced law in Broward County, and lived in Fort Lauderdale, since 1982. He served as co-chair of Americans For Equality in 1995, and

Dean Trantalis

helped successfully enact and defend passage of Broward County’s Human Rights Ordinance, which prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation. Trantalis kicks off his campaign tomorrow at 6:30 p.m., during an event at ArtServe, on East Sunrise Boulevard. “I am eager to return to public service,” he said. “My focus will be to revive our neighborhoods, especially those emerging communities that are most at risk from crime and neglect,” he added. “We need to redirect our resources to helping those most in need.”

Miami-Dade Schools May “Heave-Ho” Anti-Gay Pastor A North Miami pastor whose “free speech” has been likened by some to “hate speech” finds himself in hot water with his landlord, the Miami Dade County Public Schools, who are deciding whether or not to renew his

church’s rental agreement. As reported in our June 27, 2012 front page story (“Why, BIG BIRD—Why? Public TV Station Teams with Anti-Gay North Miami Pastor to Halt Strip Club”), Impact Miami church Pastor Jack Hakimian has been accused by members of the LGBT community of incendiary and homophobic remarks during his sermons, and of using selective Biblical scholarship in choosing language for his worship services and sermons. Hakimian’s sermons have included such subjects as “Gays and Sex Addicts Can Change and Should Change,” and “Pedophiles Use the Same Argument as Homosexuals and the Weed Smoking Community.” On Facebook, he has posted, “I want to make clear that I disagree based on the scriptures that you can actively be gay and still call yourself a Christian.” For its Sunday church services, Impact Miami rents space inside North Miami Senior High School. The ministry pays the school district $1,428 monthly to use the space. Although the district rents space to other groups—including faith-based organizations—officials say there

are rules that govern the behavior of those organizations while operating on schools’ property. A school spokesman called the content of some of Hakimian’s sermonly subject matter “disturbing and appalling.” Going one better, Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho called Hakimian’s past remarks “contrary to School Board policy, as well as the basic principles of humanity, and I have asked for immediate legal review to seek the termination of the contract that is involved.” For his part, the pastor is crying foul, claiming that he doesn’t preach hate, and that officials are trampling upon his right to free speech and assembly. “They don’t want to go there,” Hakimian told WPLG Local 10. “How do you manage people’s voices and opinions?” Superintendent Carvalho responded, saying that, “Notwithstanding legal challenges, I cannot allow the circumstances to trump common sense and decency. I am making this decision not on the basis of policy or politics, but as a rejection of prejudice and intolerance.”H

SHADOWOOD II: “No money? No problem!” By: Dale Madison

A

lthough Ken Fontaine’s name may not leap out at you, as the Executive Director of Shadowood II—one of the specialized HIV/AIDS service organizations in Broward County—he is a man who leaps into action to help those in need. As its Web site notes, Shadowood II is a structured group home for homeless men and women who are living with HIV/AIDS and various life-threatening conditions. “Shadowood II was founded in 1994 by Richard Colbert, who had witnessed so many in our community who were down on their luck—or who were literally thrown out of their homes, when their partners learned of their illness,” relates Fontaine. “I know of people who would get out of the hospital and come home to find all of their possessions on their lawn, and the locks changed. Now, here they are, on the street, ill, and no place to go. “Richard started out with a very few apartments, but he let people know that there was a place for them to go,” he adds.

Like many charitable and service organizations, Shadowood II has felt the ripples of the larger—and leaner— economy. “This has been a really rough last few years,” Fontaine acknowledges. “Budget cuts, and of course, when

Hurricane Wilma hit and we lost one of the large Banyan trees in the front of the apartments, we lost power for over a week and all of the food in the freezers and refrigerator.” Time and tide, of course, wait for no

and we have added more apartments,” Fontaine explains. “We work with all of those living with [HIV/AIDS],” he adds, “gay or straight.” “We now have people in Shadowood living here who are up to 80 years old.

Sometimes, those who are living with HIV/AIDS may not know—for up to 10 years—as the virus has a way of hiding in the body.” He stresses the importance of continual testing to determine one’s own HIV status. “Monitor your status,” he says, with emphasis. Fontaine is pleased to report that, following a recent inspection by Housing and Urban Development officials, Shadowood II passed with flying colors, and the facilities qualify to secure federal funding for another year. “Our new president is Lois Westeroff, and she has done wonders in helping to put us back on track,” Fontaine says. Explaining the process for seeking assistance from Shadowood II, Fontaine explains, “Most of our clients are only with us for a year. We bring them in from the street, and we have a notolerance policy for drugs or alcohol. We want to help them, and to get them back into society. We want to see them in their own apartment—not in an assisted living arrangement,” he says— and he means it. For more information, visit shadowoodii.org. H

What’s Inside:

I

s it hot enough for you? Seriously, I don’t think the weather could be better—even taking into account the occasional (very occasional) afternoon summer shower (the rain variety)—and there’s lots to do, especially for those of you who live here during the hot months. (I hate to preach, since I’m one of those native New Yorkers who never visited the Empire State Building—or the World Trade Center). The Water Taxi is a great way for visitors and locals to get an up-close and personal tour of the man-made beauty that is the Intracoastal Waterway (thank you, Army Corps of Engineers), and it runs every day. For a more “structured” waterborne odyssey, I might suggest the Gay Tea Cruise, for which you will find info in these hallowed pages as that event approaches on August 5. Want to know about more cool stuff to do? It’s inside—OUT in Florida. For those of us who have lived in Greater Fort Lauderdale for a while—such as me, who moved here when our congressman was the inimitable J. Herbert Burke; this was prior to that embarrassing strip club incident that inspired the Demi Moore film, “Strip Tease”— you may recognize the “A-Frame”-looking structure on the east side of North Federal Highway, just south of Northeast 26th Street, but not the name. Our Gourmand-on-theGo, Richard David Chamberlain, reviews the locale’s delicious new incarnation—Green Fish Waterfront Grill—this week in Dining. The triceps—singular and plural—are the muscles that make a guy’s arms looking so— yummy. Fitness writer Tom Bonanti has some killer ideas to give you tri’s to-die-for. The multi-talented (and multi-cute; is that even a word?) Justin Jones writes a hot, steamy, and candid “Letter to Fort Lauderdale,” in a brandnew Love Jones. Globe-Travel-er Robert Elias Deaton has his own Rocky Mountain High to share, in a postcard from the Mile High City. And the wonderful Chef Jean Doherty makes magic—with you—in the kitchen, with this week’s new Recipe, as well as lots more, inside. Have a great week! - CD

here are certain things you can count on when ordering fish in Key West. First, it will be fresh. Second, it will be moist and flaky, and probably dusted with coconut, or some Jamaican conch seasoning strong enough to set your mouth ablaze. And third, it will be accompanied by many, many tropical drinks that will slur your vision, right along with your vocabulary. Gratin Dauphinois

This Week’s Delicious Recipe By JEAN DOHERTY “Graa-tan!” This is probably the most famous dish from the Rhone Alp region, and it’s one of the first recipes I learned to make during my stay in Lyon. Gratin is a well known culinary technique in which any ingredient is browned, usually by using breadcrumbs, grated cheese, butter, or egg. This “browned crust” is obtained by baking or cooking under an overhead grill or broiler to form a golden brown top. It is traditionally served from the oven to the table in its baking dish.

half of the potatoes to the gratin dish. Add half the cheese, heavy cream, and pepper to the layer. Put the second half of the potatoes and cover with the cheese and cream that’s left. You can sprinkle with Herbs de Provence before popping in the oven—as I always say, you are the chef! Cook for about one hour at 360ºF. The Gratin Dauphinois is ready when the top is golden brown.

Ingredients:

• • • • • • • • •

2 lbs of potatoes (russet are grand) 1 or 2 cloves of garlic, mashed 2 oz of butter 2 cups of whole milk 5 oz of French or Swiss Gruyère cheese 1 pint of heavy cream Herbs de Provence (if preferred) Salt Pepper

Preheat oven to 360ºF. Slice the potatoes into thin slices—don’t rinse them, we want the starch. Put the potatoes in a pan, and cover with milk. Add salt. Bring to a boil, starting at moderate heat for about five minutes, and then lower the heat for about 10 minutes. Stir from time to time, taking care not to break the slices. Rub an ovenproof dish with garlic, and grease it well with butter. Transfer

Although born in Dublin, Ireland, chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

Denver:

Shiny disco boots hang at Charlie’s Denver country western bar

By ROBERT ELIAS DEATON

T

here is one thing you can’t miss when you visit Denver. The great outdoors beckons not only you, but every other person in the town. Runners abound; bikers cruise by; hikers have their backpacks ready to climb; and all invited by air as crisp as the first bite of an apple. Denver is the capital of Colorado and a quick way to orientate yourself in the city is to go to Colorado State Capitol Building

Colorado State Capitol Building

(200 E Colfax Ave.; 303-866-2604). Climb to the Rotunda and glimpse a view of the 200 mountains visible from the dome. You’ll also get a visual on the layout of the city, which will help you when you take to the streets— and, yes, some alleys. Biking around town is made easy with the 850 miles of paved off-road trails. The city has a great system of B-Cycles that allows you to rent a bike in one location and leave it on the street at any of the more than 50 drop stations. For more information on B-Cycles in Denver visit denver.org/what-to-do/ sports-recreation/denver-b-cycle-rides. While we’re the first to admit that the concept of bus tour leaves us cold and shivering, don’t let that stop you from booking aboard Banjo Billy’s Bus Tours. The “bus” is more like a rolling hillbilly shack with couches, recliners and horse saddles to make anyone feel at home. The tales heard aboard Banjo Billy’s run the gamut from ghosts to prostitutes to gangsters long in heaven, so prepare yourself (banjobilly.com). Despite its conservative reputation, Denver knows how to throw a party. We always start a fun night at Charlie’s Denver for its mix of gay and straight clientele (okay, mostly gay and mostly men, but hey, it’s a country-western party). There’s line dancing,

karaoke, trivia contests, and pool parties— without a pool (gotta love it). Charlie’s Denver is located in Capitol Hill (900 East Colfax Ave.). Boyztown Denver will be remembered by the old-timers as The Brig. It’s now a sexy, gay strip club with a cabaret element and more than a touch of the old-school about it. Translation: young twinks, old admirers, and lots of numbers and dollar bills going back and forth (117 Broadway). For the leather crowd, and those that like them, the Denver Eagle brings that tradition to life in an authentic, rough, and stud sort of way. You’ll get more attention if you wear a harness or something that says you know your way around a set of wrist and ankle cuffs. The Eagle appreciates the nuance (1475 36th St.). For great music and let’s-break-a-sweat dancing, head directly to Compound (145 Broadway at W 2nd Ave). It used to be called Compound Basix, and then tried Compound Denver. Now, either a part of the sign fell off, or it’s just plan Compound. Any way you call it, it’s a super friendly place with sexy, sexy bartenders. When it’s time to do something other than drink, think Racines (650 Sherman St.). It’s a classy joint that’s been round for decades, is

Tremendous Triceps Will Set You Apart From The Others!

I

By tom bonanti

t takes hard work and tenacity to build a formidable set of arms, but having great triceps will set you above the rest! Triceps make up two-thirds of your upper arm, therefore it is logical that the bigger and more defined these babies are, the more massive your arms will look. The triceps are responsible for the movement of extension of the elbow and produce motion of the forearm. Because of their larger size you need to work tri’s a lot longer and harder than biceps. Hit triceps twice a week using three-to-four exercises of three-to-four sets, and between eightto-12 repetitions. Use free weights for triceps to give you a better range of motion and produce a fuller muscle. Always

make sure you get a good stretch for tri’s, especially as you conclude the workout. Stretching helps bring out the separations and detail in the muscle. Here are some dynamite exercises that will leave your triceps feeling pumped after only a few sessions: Whenever you are working a muscle group, always include at least one exercise that will take the muscle group through its full range of motion. Close-grip bench presses will do this for triceps. Lie face up on a flat bench, feet firmly planted on the floor. Take a barbell or E-Z curl bar from the rack (or have your trainer or workout partner hand it to you). Use a narrow grip so that your hands are only two-to-three inches apart. Keeping your elbows

FLORIDAAGENDA.COM

close to your body, lower the weight to your lower sternum, and immediately push upwards. Always begin with a light warm-up set. I especially like this exercise for mass building. Triceps extensions are a classic. Start this exercise by holding a lat machine bar with your hands twoto-eight inches apart. Now press downwards from your chin until your arms are straight (just barely locking out the elbow). Return and repeat. Most bodybuilders keep their elbows tucked in at their sides during this movement. A few deliberately hold the elbows out to the sides and lean into the exercise. The choice is yours. This exercise can also be performed with a rope instead of a straight bar or lat machine bar.

gay owned, and is open until midnight most nights (which in Colorado time is akin to four a.m.) Love the omelets at Racines, washed down with the strongest margarita in town. There’s a local outlet of Hamburger Mary’s Bar & Grill here as well. Located at 700 E 17th Ave., Mary’s has the best patio dining in town for lunch or dinner. While it serves the usual suspects in the form of burgers and wraps, the food is as fresh as the camp a la Denver. H Racine’s Denver has been a favorite breakfast, lunch, brunch, dinner & late night joint since 1983

Robert Elias Deaton is a world-traveling epicure who enjoys the finer things in life.

Bent-over triceps kick-backs are great for isolating each triceps. Don’t be surprised if, upon examination, you find that one of your triceps is bigger or stronger than the other: This is common and this exercise will help build strength and symmetry in both arms. Hold a dumbbell in one hand and hold on to a rack or bench with the other hand. Raise and lower (kick back) the dumbbell at an even rate, keeping the upper arm in line with your torso and parallel to the floor. Keep your upper arm tight against your waist throughout. Be careful not to over use your wrist as you kick the weight back and extend the elbow. Lying triceps extensions, or “skull crushers” as they sometimes call them, are killers. Lie on your back on a flat bench and hold a barbell or E-Z curl bar at arm’s length above you. Lower it slowly to the forehead, and raise the bar again to arm’s length above you. This is a more advanced exercise and you may have to wait until your tri’s are ready for this one. Remember, your biceps are fun to pump, but they are the smallest muscle group of the upper body. Your triceps are a larger muscle and require more work. You may not see them, but everyone else does when you turn your back at the beach, or are your tightest muscle shirt. For more tips on pumping up your triceps—or anything else that you may fancy—contact TrainerTomB@aol.com H

“BABY GIRL” What if you were conceived twice in one lifetime: once by the illegitimate passionate sex of a young couple in love, and next by a “missionary position”-loving, conservative couple who long to have a child, but the “little guys” never make it to the egg? What if you were adopted by the married couple, only to find out you are everything they can’t stand—I mean, understand?

MIAMI BEACH BRUTHAZ Thursday, July 19 through Sunday, July 22. Founded in July 2006 as an annual summer lifestyle event for gay men and women from around the world, Miami Beach Bruthaz includes a series of social, educational, and personalized activities that promote unity, camaraderie, and a sense of belonging. The event is focused around central themes of Knowledge, Culture, and Fashion.

After coming out as a lesbian, and being alienated by her adoptive family, Ashley, a spirited young daydreamer, goes on an extraordinary journey to find love, and a place to call home. When Ashley’s fantasies meet reality, expect the unexpected! Baby GirL runs now through August 5, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 5 p.m. All performances are at Empire Stage, 1140 North Flagler Drive, Fort Lauderdale. For tickets visit: smarttix. com or empirestage.com. WARNING: This play contains ADULT CONTENT. SEA TURTLE WALKS Through July 24 at the Museum of Discovery and Science and AutoNation IMAX Theater (401 SW 2nd Ave, Fort Lauderdale). Starts at the museum at 9 p.m., and ends by 1 a.m. This summer, the Museum of Discovery and Science hosts evening Turtle Walks. The whole family can participate in an evening of discovery while uncovering the natural history and myths of turtles. Nature permitting, participants will have a chance to watch a 300 pound Loggerhead sea turtle venture out of the ocean to lay her eggs. A female loggerhead sea turtle may travel thousands of miles to return to the beach where she hatched as a baby to lay her own eggs as an adult. At 9 p.m., the adventure begins at the Museum of Discovery and Science with an informative hands-on session about turtles (land, fresh water, and salt water) with an expanded focus on sea turtles. The adventure continues to Fort Lauderdale beach where Museum expert guides will lead guests to the sea turtle’s nesting grounds to look for amazing sea turtles. We cannot guarantee a sea turtle will be spotted on every walk but when it does happen it is a natural wonder that no one will ever forget. Guests should be prepared to walk approximately one to two miles, and provide their own transportation and snacks. Advance reservations are required as space is limited. Remaining 2012 dates: July 18, 19, and 24. Admission: $18 for members, $20 for non-members.

The exhibit’s subject, Fred Holland Day (1864-1933), was a photographer and publisher, and the most influential American “pictorialist”— the international style and aesthetic movement that dominated photography during the later 19th and early 20th centuries, which believed that the medium should number among the fine arts. Pictorialist photographers used what are now seen as rudimentary techniques to manipulate otherwise straightforward photographs, to “create” an image, rather than simply record it. Day was a wealthy Boston publisher, who apparently enjoyed playing dress-up and role-playing. He utilized props

and costumes, and was something of a practitioner of a “Method School” style of photography, taking self-portraits that depicted him as Jesus Christ at the Crucifixion for an 1898 pictorial series. Day’s personality was many-layered. In 1900, art critic Sadakichi Hartmann described him as “an extraordinary, extravagant personality,” and noted that, “To pose is a necessity to him, as it is only when he believes himself something out of the ordinary that he can accomplish good work.” That “necessity” was apparent in his numerous posings for both himself and other photographers. “Making a Presence” includes examples of Day acting out this need from the many stages of his life: As a 14-yearold boy, sporting a fake mustache in one early image, on through his masquerade as painter Rembrandt, for a 1901 portrait by friend Edward Steichen. The photographer hit his stride at the end of the 19th and start of the 20th centuries. He was a firsthand witness to two separate cultural phenomena: the Aestheticism movement (best

remembered through Oscar Wilde’s famous description of “art for art’s sake”), and photographic Pictorialism. In 1902, Day was able to show his devotion to both, at a show he held in Boston, titled “Portraits by a Few Leaders in the Newer Photographic Methods.” The exhibition consisted of 54 photographs, which had been taken by 21 photographers, all concentrating on a single subject: Day himself. “Making a Presence” displays all 54 on a single wall. Day’s love for Symbolism, and for the Arts and Crafts movement, were equaled by his devotion to Pictorialism, which captured in many ways the very essence of how Day exhibited himself: Formal, romantic, stylized, and self-conscious. That he used the camera—the ultimate hardware for chronicling reality—to capture fantasy was part of his vision. But his flirtations with the absurd are married to an innocence—almost a sweetness—that avoids the worst of campiness, and manages to convey true artistic sensibility.

themselves to be both “unacademic” and “eccentric.” Day became famous for his photographic portraiture of nude male subjects, and his work shows especial attention to African-American males. The homoeroticism in his work is crystal clear, and people can draw their own conclusions from his association with such contemporary figures as socialist philosopher, Fabian Society founding member, and early gay rights activist Edward Carpenter. Day’s assistance was likewise invaluable in helping another artist achieve lasting fame and cultural pride-of-place: Khalil Gibran, whom Day photographed in 1898, and who would become the third best-selling poet of all time (behind Shakespeare and Lao-Tzu). Nearly 80 years after his death, Day has been largely forgotten. This was partly because he was eclipsed by his rival, photographer Alfred Stieglitz. The art world’s shift towards early Modernism also took its toll, as pictorial and symbolist photographic style went out of fashion. Too, the fact that 2,000 of his prints and negatives were lost in a 1904 fire didn’t help the legacy of this charming, and in some ways naïve, boy-man of a lost artistic form. “Making a Presence” runs through July 31.H

Not everyone at the time was impressed. The contemporary “Photographic News” considered Day’s work that “of a diseased imagination,” and believed that the Pictorialism movement was “fostered by the ravings of a few lunatics,” who proved

LOVE JONES

JULY 18, 2012 H 25

Letter to Fort Lauderdale By justin jones

I

spent every summer as a teenager in Fort Lauderdale. From the first of June through the middle of August, I indulged in your beaches, in your clubs, and with your boys. Fort Lauderdale then was my escape—an annual breath of fresh air from my confined (and closeted)

existence in North Carolina. You were my Disney World: a magical place, I deemed, where what made me different in North Carolina—my sexuality—made me desirable. These were the days of Cathode Ray and Coliseum (where I spent an exceptional 18th birthday, I might add), before social media took its hold: A time when partygoers dressed up and played just because—rather than pretending and over-glamorizing for the cameras. The atmosphere was raw, candid, intense… and wonderful. I marveled at, and envied the openness of Fort Lauderdale. I wrote private stories to myself: endless fantasies of what I’d do if I lived there full time. I’d extend the novelty of my summers—lazy, alcohol-soaked, sex-infused—beyond the season and into the rest of the year. True confession: I lost my backdoor virginity in Fort Lauderdale. And, through a multitude of trials and errors with too many men, I found out my “type” there— and what activities I enjoyed doing most

with that “type.” I would later apply this learning when my slutdom came to its frenzied finale, and at last I found someone with whom to commit. Don’t let this recollection dictate to you how I remember Lauderdale-in-sum. It may sound like superficiality drove my love for the city. OK—well, you’re right. It WAS superficial then. At least I thought it was. But something happened one day. Something inside told me I was in love with Fort Lauderdale not because of the boys and the booze, but for another, more profound reason. I started growing up, and when I was 19, I realized that Fort Lauderdale wasn’t just a threedimensional wonderland. Fort Lauderdale was the place that gave me… me. The party life dominated my Fort Lauderdale experience in my youth. Summers there were annual two-and-ahalf-month-long orgasms, releasing pentup aggression and denial of my sexuality. I had to cram 12 months of self-discovery

every year into a single summer. It was the only place I felt wholly myself. I still hold Fort Lauderdale in high esteem; it’s one of my favorite cities in the world. For those of you rolling your eyes and lamenting your own Fort Lauderdale experience with opinions like, “Honey, there is just too much drama here,” or “Girl, this town is too fake,” or what have you, don’t be so quick. For at least one boy from the south, your town was an Emerald City. So, yes, Fort Lauderdale gave me who I am: It’s where I evolved from a frightened, naïve boy from North Carolina, to a trial-by-fire uber-mess, to someone who makes his way writing commentary on how we—us young, stillgrowing-up gays—see each other. I’ll make a trip back soon, sweet Lauderdale. We have some catching up to do. H Justin Jones, 25, is a writer based in Minneapolis.
