Stonewall Museum Partners with Broward Public Schools, Unveils 1949 ‘Gay’ Letters Collection FORT LAUDERDALE - The Stonewall National Museum and Archives is partnering with the Broward County Public Schools to present a symposium in February 2013, called “The Kids Are Not All Right,” which is intended to bring together the ten most progressive school districts in the country to develop an LGBT curriculum for grades K through 12. Museum officials also note that a recently donated private collection includes a delicate booklet published in 1949, called “Private Letters from Homosexuals to a Doctor.” The book was assembled by D. O. Cauldwell, M.D., from his correspondence with LGBT persons who lived at the time. In his introduction, Dr. Cauldwell admits that, “regardless of the study I’ve made of Sexology, any homosexual in the United States, male or female, can tell me a great deal more than I know about homosexuals and homosexuality.” In its 32 pages, the gay correspondents present often conflicting perspectives, formed by their personal experiences. One well-bred writer—the very “out” son of a prestigious family—brags about having had sex with most of the men and boys in his town—and having taught some of the local wives how better to please their husbands. He told Cauldwell, apparently without irony, “Homosexuals sometimes cry for equal status, for a homosexual society, for communities where they may carry on their alliances, and even for marriage laws. “They’d be cutting one another’s throats as to who would be known as the Mister and who the Mistress. Under such social conditions most homosexuals would become heterosexual or impotent. I dare say the latter. Quite a few of them would go nuts. The homosexual’s one great reason for existence is his field of conquest.”

LGBT Activists Oppose AntiGay Miami-Dade Commission Candidate MIAMI GARDENS - Equality Florida and other LGBT rights groups are opposed to the candidacy of Miami Gardens Mayor Shirley Gibson, who is a candidate for the Miami-Dade County Commission, District 1 seat. Gibson says that if she is elected, she will review the county’s human rights ordinance, which protects LGBT residents from discrimination in work and housing, and granting other rights. According to Equality Florida, Gibson’s “commitment to do a ‘cost review’ isn’t simply a vague threat. The lieutenant governor strongly denied the charges of a gay work-related affair, telling an interviewer that “black women that look like me don’t engage in relationships like that.” The lieutenant governor also emailed a video to supporters, denying the lesbian rumor. LGBT advocates condemned Carroll’s flippant remarks. “As a proud Lesbian, I was outraged when [Carroll] perpetuated homophobic social stigma to defend herself from accusations surrounding an alleged inappropriate sexual liaison with her female travel aide,” said Sally Phillips, President of the Florida GLBT Democratic Caucus. “Lesbians are your daughters, sisters, mothers, aunts and grandmothers. They have the same strong capacity to love, to nurture a family and to compete in the workplace as any other human being of either gender,” she added.

Federal Measures Offer New Assistance to LGBT Homeless, Transgender Persons WASHINGTON, D.C. – Advocates say that a recent decision under the federal Fair Housing Act (FHA) will, effectively and literally, open doors for the LGBT homeless to shelter facilities that receive federal Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funding. The ruling under the “Equal Access to Housing in HUD Programs – Regardless of Sexual Orientation or Gender Identity” measure means shelters that receive federal funding must begin to accept LGBT individuals, or face the threat of legal consequences. LGBT rights groups say that a subtle discriminatory practice will now be more difficult to maintain or justify. They say that in many facilities across the country, an individual’s sexual orientation often factors into the decision by administrators to extend shelter. And in the case of transgender residents, there is the additional challenge of placing them based upon their pre-operative/nonoperative status, which has resulted in numerous complaints, nationwide. Another recent landmark ruling by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) extended employment opportunities and protections to trans-identified individuals, with their addition to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The decision will, in practice, open employment doors to trans-identified individuals who are homeless, and who receive wraparound services in transitional and supported-housing situations.

get coverage for a partner’s children by adopting them. But adoption is only

available to same-sex couples in 18 states and the District of Columbia. The

proposed rule would fill the gap until a legislative solution is enacted.

The rule change was proposed three

after

Golinski, a California resident, was

seeking health benefits for her wife, Amy Cunninghis. The court ruled DOMA to

chaplains from officiating at any such ceremonies. The amendment was sponsored by Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), who says the Obama Administration has circumvented the federal Defense of Marriage Act [DOMA], by permitting gay couples to wed on-base. “[DOMA] means this: Marriage means only a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife,” said King. “And the word ‘spouse’ only refers to a member of the opposite sex who is a husband or a wife.” LGBT rights activists say the measure has more bark than bite, since the amendment prohibits the use of military funds for same-sex unions, and there have been no instances of such an occurrence.

be unconstitutional, and Cunninghis was

House Passes Amendment Banning Same-Sex Ceremonies on Military Base WASHINGTON, D.C. – An amendment passed last week in the U.S. House of Representatives to the 2013 Defense Appropriations Bill would prohibit same-sex couples from holding weddings, civil unions, or other commitment ceremonies on military bases, and would forbid military

ALBANY, NEW YORK – Supporters and opponents of marriage equality marked the passing yesterday of the first anniversary of its legalization in New York State, the last state to enact such a law (although opponents note that in the most recent state to take up the question—North Carolina—voters prohibited its establishment). New York enacted same-sex marriage on July 24, 2011. A month earlier—following a deal brokered by state Republicans and Gov. Andrew Cuomo, to allow for protections against discrimination lawsuits for religious groups and nonprofit organizations—the bill passed the State Senate, by a vote of 33 to 29. An analysis by New York Senate Democrats last year determined that about 66,500 same-sex weddings

performed during the first three years of its enactment would generate $311 million in additional revenue and economic activity for the Empire State. One year later, precise numbers of gay couples wed statewide are unknown, as couples are not required to identify their gender on the marriage license. According to the state Department of Health, at least 3,424 same-sex marriages have occurred outside of New York City as of earlier this month.

Gay Student’s Beating Will Cost School $35K COLUMBUS, OHIO – An Ohio school district will pay up to $35,000 and be required to improve its anti-bullying policies, in a settlement reached last week with a gay high-school student whose videotaped beating went viral. UnionScioto school board officials approved the agreement, which was brokered by the ACLU of Ohio, on Thursday. The settlement was the result of another student’s October 17 assault on Zach King, who was a 15-year-old freshman at Unioto High School. According to the ACLU, school officials “fostered an atmosphere” that permitted bullying of LGBT students, and disregarded reports of harassment. “We hope similarly situated students don’t have to go through what Zach went through. The school district has made a commitment to try to avoid incidents like this in the future,” said James Hardiman, legal director of the ACLU of Ohio. After pleading guilty to battery, King’s assailant, a 15-year-old student, was sentenced to 90 days in a juveniledetention center. H

New Chinese Dictionary Excludes “Gay” Definition BEIJING, CHINA – LGBT rights advocates are condemning a glaring omission in the latest edition of one of China’s most widely-used dictionaries. Of the approximately 69,000 entries, 13,000 Chinese characters, and 3,000 new phrases in the revised sixth edition Contemporary Chinese Dictionary, a colloquial definition for the word “gay” has been excluded. Linguistics experts say the word, tongzhi, is a commonly-used term equivalent to “gay.” But a social sciences professor from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology says that tongzhi also means “comrade,” a word containing political associations.

Chinese LGBT demonstrators

“The use of ‘tongzhi’ to describe homosexuality started in Hong Kong and Taiwan to make fun of the mainland’s communist terminology because Chinese leaders address each other using ‘tongzhi,’ meaning ‘comrade,’” Prof. As Ding Xueliang told the BBC. “So it’s quite normal that the Chinese government doesn’t want to take this new meaning into the dictionary.” The standard Chinese word for homosexual, tongxinglian— literally defined as “same-sex love”—is included in the revised edition, but that word has “clinical” connotations. Homosexuality was illegal in China

until 1997. According to the BBC, the omission of tongzhi is an indicator of how the “preferences and values” of the

dictionary’s editors shaped its content. A 2010 Agence-France Presse report said

that there are approximately 30 million

gay Chinese nationals, and 20 million of them are men.

Italian Pro Footballer Fined for Anti-Gay Slur MILAN, ITALY – A member of Italy’s AC Milan football club was fined the equivalent of $17,800 for an anti-gay remark he made during the European championship matches. Antonio Cassano has been ordered by Union of European Football Association (UEFA) officials to pay a 15,000-euros fine for saying he hoped there were no homosexuals on the Polish and Ukrainian national team squads.

In response to questions from reporters, Cassano said, “The coach had warned me that you would ask me this question,” adding “I hope there are none. But if there are queers here, that’s their business.” Cassano said later that his comments had been misinterpreted.

Liberian Lawmakers Approve Constitutional Ban on Same-Sex Marriage MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Last week, the Liberian Senate passed an amendment to the nation’s constitution to ban same-sex marriages. The measure

was tagged onto existing language in the governing document that bans bigamy, and marriage between close family members, and adds “or persons of the same sex” to the text. “My bill

seeks to ensure that people of the same sex under our law should not be allowed to get married,” said Senate judiciary committee chairman Joseph Nagbe. A second bill that would make same-sex relations a capital offense is currently before the Liberian House of Representatives, and has been dubbed a sister to Uganda’s “Kill the Gays” bill. Homosexuality is illegal in Liberia under existing anti-sodomy provisions, though they are rarely enforced in full. Same-sex marriage is not expressly addressed in the nation’s constitution.

New Zealand Ruling Party Calls for Legalized Gay Adoptions AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND – This week, New Zealand’s ruling National Party endorsed a measure to extend adoption eligibility to couples in civil unions. The motion, which passed by about a two-thirds majority at the party’s annual conference, includes same-sex couples. The resolution of the conference is not binding, and Kiwi Members of Parliament are free to vote their consciences when the bill comes to a full legislative vote.

St. Petersburg Officials Announce 73 Prosecutions under “Gay Propaganda” Ban ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA - St Petersburg Police officials say that dozens of LGBT people have been prosecuted for engaging in “homosexual propaganda” since the city introduced its ban four months ago. According to St Petersburg Police Chief Sergei Umnov, “Seventythree people have been prosecuted for homosexual propaganda, and one person for pedophile propaganda.” The law was passed in February by St Petersburg’s city assembly,

JULY 25, 2012 H 9

after the introduction of similar laws in the Russian areas of Ryazan in 2006, and Arkhangelsk in 2011. It calls for punishment of “homosexual propaganda” and “pedophile propaganda” with fines of up to $15,600.

LGBT Rights Groups Call for Olympics to Disqualify Homophobic Nations LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM – On Sunday, LGBT rights activists plan to protest the policy of Olympics officials permitting nations that have anti-LGBT laws to compete in the London 2012 games. “The [International Olympic Committee] should disqualify from the Olympics countries that discriminate against athletes on the grounds of gender, ethnicity, religion/belief, sexual orientation, or gender identity,” said human rights advocate Peter Tatchell. “The IOC and [London Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games] have a duty to uphold the Olympic Charter’s commitment to equality for all in sport. They are failing to do so,” he added. Tatchell is calling for Olympic officials to ensure that competing states “make a public statement that LGBT athletes are welcome at London 2012, and that participating nations must not discriminate on the grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity.” He

added

that

“in

over

150

countries, [LGBT] athletes are forced to hide their sexuality in order to get

selected and compete, otherwise they

would be rejected and possibly face

imprisonment. In the absence of laws

against homophobic discrimination, victimization and bias against LGBT athletes is endemic in most competing

nations.” Tatchell says that such statesanctioned discrimination should not be rewarded by allowing participation in the 2012 games.H

THE HUNGER GAMES JULY 25, 2012 • ISSUE 140

CLIFF DUNN, EDITOR

I

had occasion this week to see an old friend who I haven’t seen in nearly 20 years. On his first trip back to Fort Lauderdale since the early-90s, my friend and I played catch-up on subjects long forgotten—including his shortlived relationship (little-recalled, on my part) with a former Member of Congress, disgraced these several years past in an underage “sexting” scandal that ended a very promising national political career. When we started speculating about what could have been going on in the mind of Congressman— let’s call him “Y ” (referring to both his hyper-sexed male-genderdetermining chromosome, and, more obliquely, to the question, “WHY the HELL didn’t you stop yourself when you knew there was a problem?”)—the content of his messages, naturally enough, spurred our most prurient curiosity, and we commenced to Google bicoastally, mind you the shameful record. I won’t get into the specifics of what he texted, or to whom he texted it, but the tone of the language he used set off a wild flurry of responses in me, both emotional and intellectual. I was horrified for the victims who were subjected to the id-driven fantasies of what was clearly a man who had spun out-of-control. How else to justify, intellectually, at least, coy questions about what the recipient was wearing, how good he must look in it, etc., etc., ad nauseum.

The fact that I knew the disgraced public servant from my years as a radio talk show host—and that I liked him personally—added to my cognitive dissonance. I had shared cigars with him, for crying out loud! But those conversations over Macanudos took on a more sinister tone, when I recalled our “girlish” comments about how good soand-so looked in short-shorts (which my lawmaker acquaintance had the occasion to witness; in this case, “so-and-so” is another contemporary and current figure, well-recognized in political circles). I’m not saying that boyswon’t-be-boys; good luck changing that, whether the boys in question be gay or straight. But this kind of risky behavior goes well beyond anything towards which most people are willing to turn a blind eye. It speaks of a want of prudence and the qualities of selfpreservation that are required to live as a member of society, even for those whom we know ,and of whom we are inclined to be tolerant. The ongoing case of former TV personality Rob Lopicola is another example of this, although not all the facts have been revealed, and Lopicola deserves the benefit of both the human and the legal doubt. I knew Rob socially, from Sunday afternoon T-Dance at the late Voodoo Lounge in Fort Lauderdale, and cannot reconcile what I have read in police and court records (including the text messages sent to one of the alleged victims, a 15-year-old boy), with the person I ran into on occasion, more recently, at the nightclub which employed him. Because I have no window into his mind,

soul, or psyche, there’s no way for me to make more than an educated guess, based upon what I know of compulsive behavior, as to what possibly drove him (if he is, in fact, responsible for that which he is charged) or for that matter anyone who is reputed to have abandoned reason and the finer niceties of the “social contract.” Sadly, one doesn’t need to look far afield to see that our tolerant environment masks less benevolent undercurrents. When something like this occurs, there are two victims: The youth who is involved, certainly, but also the reputed perpetrator, who gives in to what I can only see as a “hunger,” one that is often to be seen in the haunts and spaces of our beautiful burg. The now-viral images of two participants on one of the Stonewall Summer Pride floats doesn’t depict anything that many of us haven’t seen (and, in some cases, done). The difference is that most of us haven’t done it in broad daylight, on a parade float, in front of children. Don’t these people have friends, family, or a support system to tell them when they’ve gone too far? I love the fact that we live in a tolerant, easy-going place, where the sight of two men walking hand in hand, or cuddling, or kissing, is the rule, rather than the exception. Each of us has to be accountable for what we do, and, more fundamentally, what we allow ourselves to give into, and become. We no longer have to fight for our right to exercise our inner Pleasure Principle. The challenge for us as adults—ruled by reason, cause, and consequence—is to give in to a healthy dose of reality when it is needed most.H

THE POLITICS OF POULTRY By joe harris

I

n politics, as in fast food, one man’s chicken is another man’s “beef.” Case in point: While the list of people who are fleeing the Chick-fil-A coop is growing—mostly in urban, gay-friendly areas, by the way— there is a growing chorus of support from traditionalists and social and religious conservatives who stand behind (and with) the Atlanta-based chicken joint, and its corporate policies that favor “the biblical definition of the family unit,” as company president Dan Cathy put it this month. Those traditionalists, long suspicious of Hollywood-types and other liberal elites, were anything but put off by Cathy’s recent remarks that the fast-food giant stands “guilty as charged” of its backing—backed up by political donations—for candidates and causes that are more inclined to view “marriage equality” as alternating nights doing the dishes than a civil right. On the left, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino blocked Chick-fil-A’s plans to expand into Bean Town, saying that “You can’t have a business in the city of Boston that discriminates against the population. We’re an open city. We’re a city that’s at the forefront of inclusion.” The Jim Henson Company, creators of the Muppets, recently

cancelled a planned partnership with the chicken chain in protest. Dan Cathy, who is the son of company founder S. Truett Cathy, told the Baptist Press, “We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives,” throwing divorcees— gay and otherwise—under the bus, for added measure. “We don’t claim to be a Christian business,” Cathy said. “But as an organization we can operate on biblical principles.” Those principles include closing its 1,600 restaurants on Sundays, and a management philosophy with a “focus on values rooted in the Bible.” Gay rights activists accuse Chickfil-A of promoting an anti-gay agenda, chiefly through political contributions. A report by Equality Matters found that, from 2003 to 2009, the company donated more than $3 million to Christian groups that oppose gay rights. The report noted that $2 million of that was donated in 2010 alone. The company has consistently denied that it opposes LGBT rights. Last week, officials said that Chick-fil-A will “leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena” and abstain from “proactively being engaged in the dialogue” on marriage equality.

Cathy remains unapologetic about Chick-fil-A’s stand in the public policy debate, and says that he and his company “intend to stay the course.” His father, Truett, 91, is no stage-prop villain. He has been honored for his philanthropy and good works (which include serving as a foster parent for over 30 years, and establishing the WinShape Foundation to serve homeless and foster children). The elder Cathy opened his first restaurant in 1946. He has attended the same Baptist parish for over 50 years, and was honored in May with a degree from Liberty University, the intellectual cauldron of religious, social, and legal conservatism founded by Jerry Falwell. Last week, former and GOP presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee posted on his Facebook page that he was “incensed at the vitriolic assaults on the Chick-fil-A company.” He said the Cathys are “a wonderful Christian family who are committed to operating the company

with Biblical principles, and whose story is the true American success story,” that “is being smeared by vicious hate speech, and intolerant bigotry from the left.” Huckabee, who declared August 1 to be “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day,” defended traditionalists. “Too often, those on the left make corporate statements to show support for same-sex marriage, abortion, or profanity, but if Christians affirm traditional values, we’re considered homophobic, fundamentalists, hatemongers, and intolerant,” he wrote.H

anadian-born R&B singer/ songwriter and actress Deborah Cox left rehearsals for the national tour of “Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical,” and flew from Manhattan to Fort Lauderdale last week as the special guest of the Break the Silence Campaign. The non-profit organization, founded by Logan Voxx’s Positive Young People (PYP) Foundation, hosted a cocktail event at the waterfront home of Ben Lap, raising nearly $10,000 for PYP. The organization has earmarked the money for a grant to the Pride Center at Equality Park of South Florida, and its new pilot program providing comprehensive services to women with HIV in Broward County. What’s Inside: When I was in my twenties, one of my boyfriends had a thing for Olympian athletes (DUH!). This “passion” translated into other areas of our life, which I won’t get into here (this page being—more or less—“G”-rated), but I learned quite a bit about the luge and (for some reason) women’s figure skating during that summer of lust. Fast forward to this weekend, and those fellows on the International Olympic Committee present the spectacle of the Games of the XXX Olympiad, and London 2012, which expects a worldwide viewership of 4 BILLION over the next two weeks, and an onsite attendance (according to the latest ticket sales) of upwards of 7 million. You’ll find everything that’s HOTTEST about the games that evoke the ancient Greek ideals of sport, honorable competition—and the male physique (there’s also plenty for our “L” sisters to enjoy, not to mention our B, T, Q, and I friends) inside our OLYMPIC-Sized Special: London Unzipped. Up to 60 percent of the human body is composed of water (and 70 percent of your brain). Nutrition writer Andy Kress, who could himself pass for an Olympian, has some great information about this most important element, inside. The Drive is Alive, and one of the more recent culinary additions to the Gayborhood’s main drag is Wilton’s Bier Garden, the focus of foodster Richard David Chamberlain, this week in Dining. Our friends Al Cicotte and Kevin Palumbo— and 20,000 of their closest friends—just came back from one of the hottest spots to be gay in the U.S.A, Provincetown, which, by happenstance, is also the subject of Travel connoisseur Robert Elias Deaton’s musings this week; check it, and them out. Olympic-Sized Special Games of the XXX Olympiad:

N

ot since Pippa gave us an eyeful of her “London Derrière” during William and Kate’s spring Royal nuptials have the world’s eyes been so keenly focused on the British Empire’s ancient capital. The 2012 Olympic Games are a chance for London— the 2,000-year-old City-on-the-Thames—to captivate the 4 BILLION people—out of a total world population of 7 billion—who are expected to watch the games. Never mind the 4 million who are expected to descend upon the city for London 2012. (As of last week, 7 MILLION tickets for events had actually been sold).

The 2012 Summer Olympics begins Friday, July 27, and ends Sunday, August 12. A total cast of 15,000 will take part in the London 2012 Opening and Closing Ceremonies. Scheduled entertainers include Russell Brand, who is set to perform a comedy version of the Sex Pistols’ “Pretty Vacant,” as well The Beatles’ “I Am The Walrus.” Koo-kooka-choo. Live musical performances are scheduled to include Queen—which will perform “We Will Rock You” with Jessie J. and its late lead singer, Freddie Mercury, who will appear as a digital projection—Take That, Annie Lennox, George Michael, The Kinks’ Ray Davies, The Pet Shop Boys, and 1980s British ska band Madness, which will perform their hit “Our House”–a song that rocked Buckingham Palace–and, we hope, Her Majesty—last month during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee extravaganza. A tribute to British fashion will feature supermodels Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Stella Tennant, Lily Cole, and Georgia Jagger. MILITARY DADDY ALERT: 160 of Her Majesty’s Coldstream Regiment of Foot Guards— also known as the Coldstream Guards—will march in a military-rendition of “Park Life,” by the band Blur. The Coldstream Guards is the oldest regiment in the British Regular Army in continuous active service, originating in Scotland in 1650.

LONDON 2012 UNZIPPED The Opening Ceremony showcases the best that the Host Nation has to offer. It features a parade of the competing nations, and the highly-anticipated entrance of the Olympic Flame, which is passed through the athletes to the final Torchbearer, who ceremoniously lights the Cauldron, signaling the start of the Games. The Flame will continue to burn for the entirety of London 2012. The Parade of Athletes features a procession of 10,000 athletes, representing the 204 nations that are competing in the 2012 Games. (Teams enter in alphabetical order, according to the language of the Host Country—except for the Greek team, which enters first for the Olympics, and the team of the Host Nation, in this case, Team Great Britain, which marches in last.) Once the Games have been declared open, the Olympic Anthem will be played, and the Olympic Flag will be unfurled horizontally, carried into the Stadium, and flown from its place of prominence and honor. A member of Team Great Britain will intone the words of the Olympic Oath. The athlete— holding a corner of the Olympic Flag in his left hand, and raising his right hand—will say, “In the name of all the competitors, I promise that we shall take part in these Olympic Games, respecting and abiding by the rules which govern them, committing ourselves to a sport without doping and without drugs, in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the honor of our teams.” NBC plans to stream all 32 sports events live online, at nbcolympics.com.

t a time when most non-profits are struggling to make ends meet, along comes Matt LaMarianna and a new venture on Wilton Drive—one that is, by all indications, thriving. Boomerangs thrift store, which opened on November 11, 2011—or, 11/11/11, as LaMarianna notes—supports the efforts of pet rescue organizations. “I started in the non-profit work in Boston,” LaMarianna explains. “I had just lost someone to HIV/AIDS, and it was someone very important and special in my life. After his passing, I started helping at the AIDS Action Committee. I got my start at merchandising in the thrift store that was run by the committee.” He had found his calling, but the geography wasn’t a perfect fit. “I really enjoyed the work,” he recalls. “Then, one wintery, blustery Boston day, I decided ‘enough’” with the cold weather. After moving to the warmer climes around Tampa/St. Pete, LaMarianna continues, “I’d heard that Wilton Manors was the place to be if you’re in the LGBT community. I kept passing this one place, and the windows were blacked out, but the place intrigued me. I actually thought that it was part of the Mexican restaurant [Acapulco Lindo] next door, so I kept asking around. My mom left me some money, so I put all that into opening my own 501 (c) (3) [non-profit organization], the Animal Rescue Fund. As you know, all gay men love their pets,” he adds with a smile.

“I am sort of like ‘Aunt Bea’ from ‘The Andy Griffith Show.’ Once she left television, she adopted cats galore. I am that way with dogs, so I am sort of the crazy cat lady—except with dogs,” LaMarianna impishly explains. He takes seriously, though, the work he has chosen for himself and for Boomerangs. “‘Boomerang Buddies’ is our inaugural big-adoption event. It’s going to be on Sunday, August 5, from 10 to 4. The event will raise funds for Lady Luck Pet Rescue, Good Karma Pet Rescue, Stray Aid and Rescue, and, of course Animal Rescue Fund, which is our own organization. I am so excited about having this event. We will have the mobile van for spay and neutering on site that day, and it will be a great way for us to showcase the new store,” LaMarianna adds, with fatherly pride. “This has been a labor of love for me. It’s been my dream-come-true. Facebook has been such an amazing resource for us to spread our message, because you know what it’s like to struggle to find advertising dollars, and with social media, you have an unlimited audience, worldwide.” LaMarianna acknowledges the realworld challenges he and other not-for-profit groups face. “It’s still tough out there, but we are paying the bills, and in this economy, that’s saying something. I would love to find a larger space, but I want to stay on the Drive if I can. It’s so important to have the visual, and to be ‘in the face,’” he notes. His work has paid off, with an eclectic assortment of clothing and merchandise that graces the home of more than one GUY Mag staffer. Boomerangs is located at 2365 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors.

Wilton’s Bier Garden By RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN

W

e admit it. We’re an absolute sucker for pupu platters—the kind of nibbles that come sized for two or four, and we end up eating all by ourselves. In some places, these are called “tapas,” but at Wilton’s Bier Garden, that just-on-the-bend dive of merriment and sex appeal, these are called “bites.” The Deutsche Sausage Platter is square in size and filling in content, with two German Bratvurst, two Bavarian Weisswurst, and a giant soft pretzel that’s baked to perfection and is pull-apart delicious. The entire temptation comes with sauerkraut (ask for it heated) and spicy brown mustard for dipping with any and all of the above. For the uninitiated, German Bratvurst is the four-inch long dark sausage Jumbo Hot Dog w/ Sauerkraut

that is made of pork, veal, or beef, depending on the city of origin. As for Weisswurst, it’s the sausage that’s lighter in color, a result of the spices more than the meal, and is still typically made of veal or pork. In Germany, there’s a saying that Weisswurst should never be allowed to hear the church bell’s noon chime. Translation: they are made in the morning, and eaten in the morning. In the Bier Garden version, they are served all night, church bells not withstanding. Fisherman Tuna Melt on Artisan And at $12 for the platter Bread (that’s supposed to serve two), it’s worth every penny. The bar & grill suggests downing your platter with a bottle of König Ludwig Weissbier Dunkel, a Bavarian Dunkelweizen beer by Schloßbrauerei Kaltenberg brewery, which is always a safe bet where beer is concerned. Ordering it may take some rehearsal, but the results are superb. The sandwich selection is quite large, and

we can safely recommend any of the Garden’s specialty versions, made on an incredible rye bread. When toasted, it has a crunch and texture that delights the palette, regardless of what’s stuffed inside. In our case, we opted for the Bavarian Ruben ($8.00), which should actually be spelled “Reuben,” but who’s keeping track—in this case, with dark Bavarian bread. It involves a deliciously thin-sliced corned beef with aged Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Thousand Island dressing. Ask for extra dressing, double toasted, and hold your squeals of delight until out of shouting range, lest you embarrass yourself. That, of course, is hard to do at Wilton’s Bier Garden, which opened a few months back, and has been an instant hit on the Drive. Special events pack the place on a regular basis—our favorites being Sunday night’s “Divas on the Drive,” starring Amanda Austin, and “Super Mug Thursdays,” on the Alfresco Patio. It is at times like those that you want to

order the Jumbo Hot Dog with sauerkraut and brown mustard ($7.00). This masterpiece is a showstopper to eat, since it is a tasty foot-long all-beef frankfurter with a six-inch sour-dough roll—giving you six-inches of overhang, and endless material for puns and comments. The Bier Garden also makes a wonderful tuna melt called the Fisherman ($8.00), which is layered with light tuna salad, sliced tomatoes, and Swiss and Provolone cheese, melted to a brown fresco over artisan bread. The real glory of Wilton’s Bier Garden is its selection of 100 bottled beers and 16 draft favorites, with a selection of unique wines from Europe, North and South America, and Africa, of all places. There are four rooms in the joint: The aforementioned Alfresco Garden Patio, the WBG Bar, the Sky Terrace Lounge, and the VIP Video Lounge. Check them all out, and remember to tell them Agenda sent you.H

No-Crust Goat Cheese Quiche This Week’s Delicious Recipe By JEAN DOHERTY Quiche is a savory, open-faced pastry crust dish, with a delicious filling of custard and cheese, meat, or vegetables. Try THIS variation of an old favorite on for size: It has NO pastry, filo, or crust!.

Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • •

2 tablespoons of butter, divided 12 green onions or scallions, chopped ½ teaspoon of salt, divided ½ teaspoon of fresh ground black pepper, divided 4 eggs 4 ounces of goat cheese, sliced ½ cup of half and half ½ cup of sour cream ½ cup of milk Dash of hot pepper sauce (if desired) Dash of Worcestershire Sauce

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Grease the bottom and sides of a 9-inch round baking dish with one tablespoon of butter, and set aside. Melt the remaining butter in a pan over a medium heat, and cook the onions, until they are nice and brown, for about two minutes. Whisk the eggs. Stir in the goat cheese, breaking

up any lumps. Season with the salt and pepper. When it is fairly smooth, whisk in the remaining ingredients. Pour this mixture into the ovenproof dish, and then sprinkle with the green onions. Bake 30 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool for 20 minutes. Garnish, if desired, with additional green onions or parsley. Serve with a green salad. You are the chef!

n 1620, the Mayflower, carrying 100 separatists from England and Holland, landed on the tip of Cape Cod and anchored just off the shore of what is now Provincetown. It was a brutal November day, as Novembers can be in P-Town. Within the week, the Pilgrims decided that the place was a little too rough and exposed for their needs, and they continued on to Plymouth Rock, directly across Cape Cod Bay on the mainland. Before they left the tiny tip of Cape Cod, however, they signed the Mayflower Compact, which established the laws that governed this group of religious extremists who formed the backbone of America’s original colonies. The village of Provincetown was eventually taken over by Portuguese fisherman, who found the harbor a perfect launch point for their daily fishing runs. water, water, everywhere By ANDY KRESS

Y

ou are not drinking enough water, plain and simple. How do we know? Because it takes 100 ounces of fresh water to adequately hydrate the human body. For years, nutritionists and researchers have advised us to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. And even that dose seems extraordinary to most people. More recent research, however, has revealed that 64 ounces isn’t even close to the real needs of the average human body for adequate hydration. Other than oxygen, water is the single most essential element in your daily diet. It’s easy to understand why, when you realize that about 60 percent of the human body is made up of the stuff. The brain has even more—70 percent! The most obvious source of water loss from the body is through urination and sweating. Less obvious, but no less important, are the two quarts of water you expel through breathing. The air you breathe out is 100% humidity! So drink up. The human body requires water to facilitate nearly all its functions. Still, humans seem to be the most reluctant species on the planet to drink enough of this cleansing liquid.

Even if we include the copious amounts of coffee, tea, soda, and juices consumed on a daily basis, the total water intake of any single individual is still likely to be low. Fast fact: A new study done at the University of Connecticut demonstrates that up to five cups of coffee, or an equivalent amount of non-sugared soda counts toward your daily intake without any negative diuretic effects from the caffeine consumed. Drinking water, even the minimum amount, can help aide in the prevention of disease, and alleviate some of the physical side effects many people experience throughout their day. Thirst is not a symptom of moderate dehydration. By the time you actually feel thirsty, you are severely dehydrated and need an immediate input of liquids.

The most common side effect of dehydration is hunger. That’s right. The stomach makes little distinction between too little food and too little water. Normally, all of us get plenty of food. It’s the lack of water that is creating our hunger sensation, as well as chronic fatigue, dry skin, lightheadedness, and dry mouth. Have these symptoms? It’s a sure-fire sign that you are not drinking enough water throughout the day, and need to bump up your intake. Lack of adequate water increases the damage to our body’s cells, thus c back pain. Improper water intake also affects the lymph system, which serves as the body’s main way of detoxification, removing impurities, bacteria and dead cells. Drinking adequate water is the best way to keep the

immune system at its optimal, as well. Good water does not only come from a glass or bottle. Eating well-washed fresh fruits and vegetables is an excellent alternative source of water, full of important vitamins and minerals, as well. Oh, and before we forget to mention it, alcohol does not count toward liquid consumption. For each drink or beer you consume at the bar, the body requires an additional eight ounces of water to counter alcohol’s diuretic effect. Ideally, drink one glass of water between orders at the bar just to keep from losing fluids while having fun. Plus, after a night on the town, drink a glass of water with some sugar and a dash of salt. You’ll wake up without your usual hangover. Water to the rescue once again!H

KEN KEECHL: A PASSION FOR PEOPLE By Dale Madison For Ken Keechl, public service is more than one of the highest callings: It runs in his veins. Keechl served on the Broward County Commission from 2006 until 2010, and was the first openly-gay official elected to that governing body. In 2009, he was named Broward County’s Vice Mayor, and the following year, he became Broward County Mayor, at the time the highest-ranking, openly-gay official in the United States. Gay, straight,

Running Man: Ken Keechl

left, or right, Keechl says that politics is about people. “Even though in the commission you are elected on a non-partisan basis, I am a Democrat, but am very proud that I have a number of members of the Grand Old Party who have stuck with me, and have even gotten out and campaigned for me.” That loyalty was earned by his commitment to staying on top of what matters to his constituents. “I have always focused on the issues.” He says that he is proud of many accomplishments during his time on the county commission, noting in particular his hard work “to protect the environment,” and his opposition to unfettered growth by developers. While Broward County Mayor, Keechl says that he worked hard with fellow commissioners to cut waste in the budget, and helped reduce the county budget from $3.7 billion to $3.3 billion. “My personal political philosophy as an elected official: ‘If you are not at the table, you are not part of the meal,’” Keechl says. “As someone who is elected, you have to participate, you can’t just look on.” Although Keechl is proud of the

political and community partnerships he forged across the broad spectrum of Broward County’s landscape, he says he never forgets the people whose voice in large measure he represents. “When I got on the commission, one of the first questions I asked was, ‘Do we offer domestic partnership benefits to our county employees?’ At the time, we didn’t.” “I started a search, and I was able to find a company that could offer them at a reasonable rate,” Keechl recalls. “In 2007, I asked the same question regarding benefits for transgender individuals, and was able to get an amendment to add those brothers and sisters to the availability for coverage.” Keechl says that building relationships is the hallmark to being an effective and connected representative of his constituents’ concerns. “I didn’t run for the office to close doors, I ran for office to open doors,” he adds. Keechl is pleased with the direction that Broward County has taken, and thinks that he can add a voice of experience, energy, and compassion to the policy discussion. “I am very excited about how this commission has embraced the

progressive agenda,” he notes. “Four years ago, I left the law firm [Kopelowitz Ostrow, Ferguson, Weiselberg—oh, and Keechl] to run for office. I barely lost, so I returned to law practice doing mostly pro-bono work.” Redistricting of the commission seats places a large LGBT population in the newly-drawn District 7. As Keechl explains, “Every ten years, the county redraws the districts, and beginning last year, the calls started coming in to me,” he laughs. “‘We miss you on the commission,’ people would tell me, so after looking at the new district I decided to throw my hat in the ring.” He describes the political landscape. “Originally I was one of four candidates, along with Charlotte Rodstrom, Tim Ryan, and Evan Jenne. Jenne dropped out of the race.” The once-and-(he hopes)-future commissioner has an eye on the election, and beyond, noting the challenges of local politics and policy. “I am really looking forward to returning to the county commission. It sometimes is a real challenge, but is one of the most rewarding adventures when you know that you are making a difference, not just for today, but for the future.”H
