Ex-GOP Senator: Bathroom SexSting Was “Official” Business BOISE, IDAHO — Former U.S. Sen. Larry Craig says that his arrest in a June 11, 2007 sex-sting was part of his official legislative business. Craig, 67, made his claim in an effort to avoid repaying $217,000 in campaign funds that the Federal Election Commission (FEC) says he misused in his legal defense. The FEC sued Craig in June, claiming he diverted campaign money for his personal uses—by spending it on his legal defense, after being accused of soliciting sex in a men’s room at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. The FEC says that Craig’s legal expenses have no connection to his Senate campaign.

Former U.S. Sen. Larry Craig

During a layover in Minneapolis, an undercover officer said that Craig had tapped his feet under a restroom stall divider, signaling that he wanted sex. Craig’s attorney says that any money tied to his bathroom visit falls under his official, reimbursable duties as a Senator, since he was traveling for work. “Senate rules sanction reimbursement for any cost relating to a Senator’s use of a bathroom while on official travel,” Andrew Herman, Craig’s lawyer, wrote in legal documents filed on Thursday.

Gay Woman Attacked By Homophobic Neighbor Kids

In a shocking response, the B&B, which is owned by Carole and Bill Moore, posted on Facebook: “Where is the role model that your son needs to know how to act like a man?” and “I’ll pray for you,” adding, “[I] guess CAPE GIRARDEAU, MISSOURI that’s why God invented aids.” - Three children—all members of the Whitebriar’s official Facebook same family—are being held in juvenile page is private, but it has been inuncustody for an attack upon a woman who dated with comments supporting claims she was targeted for being gay. LGBT rights. One post reads, “Are Jeana Terry, 41, says that on July 24, she you folks teaching all those innocent and her partner, Lisa Lange, were inside children how to be homophobes? The couple claims that when should be.” Terry opened the door, the teen—along with her 13-year-old sister and 11-yearold brother—began to physically assault her. “Once I was down, it was pure chaos,” Terry said, adding that she was repeatedly hit and kicked. A neighbor confirmed Terry’s account. “They were kicking, stomping, and beating the hell out of her,” said Mima Poole. At a juvenile hearing, the two younger children pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and trespassing. The 16-year-old faces assault and burglary charges. She could be charged with a hate crime, and may be tried as an adult.

Activists Condemn NJ B&B for Anti-Gay Facebook Post EDGEWATER PARK, NEW JERSEY – The owners of a bed and breakfast are under fire for writing a homophobic Facebook message to a local gay woman who expressed disappointed with the owners’ support for fast food chain Chick-fil-A. Joianne Fraschilla posted on Facebook, after learning about a sign displayed at the Whitebriar Bed and Breakfast promoting “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” on August 1. “This is somewhere my son loves to pass by, and we have been excited to visit,” wrote Fraschilla, who is openly gay. “I’m sad to see a local business anti-LGBT marriage.”

House Republicans Vow to Continue Defense of DOMA WASHINGTON, D.C. – In spite of Obama Administration efforts to roll back enforcement of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)—and despite a federal court ruling last week that the law is unconstitutional—a leading House Republican says that GOP leaders will keep defending the law in court—and spending taxpayer money to do so. Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-California) told reporters at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast last week, “The rule of law keeps America strong. When you break down the rule of law, you break down society,” adding, “There can’t be a system where somebody decides, ‘Well, that’s law, but I just don’t like it.’ It doesn’t matter what the issue is. We have a court system. We have a rule of law we go through. And I think you have to go through the system.” House Republicans have been defending DOMA since March 2011, when U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder called it unconstitutional, and ordered the Justice Department to stop defending it.H

“The religious factions that are growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with wisdom. They are trying to force government leaders into following their position 100 percent. If you disagree with these religious groups on a particular moral issue, they complain, they threaten you with a loss of money or votes or both.” - U.S. Sen. Barry Goldwater (R-Arizona), 1981

’m going to depart this week from my usual tones of conciliation and tolerance because, as my grandmother would say, My Irish is up. This sort of mood often accompanies casting caution to the wind, and speaking in broader generalities than with I am normally comfortable. So be it. My feeling as I write this is that anyone who decides to vote for a Republican U.S. House candidate come November must harbor some— realized or unknown—degree of homophobia, or at least a well-honed sense of Schadenfreude that is focused on one group, namely us. (Note that I said “decides” to vote: I recognize that there are many factors that go into casting one’s vote, not the least of which are a predisposition to choose a political party based upon one’s parents’ voting habits, or one’s geographic region of birth, which also relates to the first. If you vote solely based on one of these criteria, I am hard-pressed to think of you as homophobic—more properly, you lack self-identity, or may just be lazy.) In the reverse, any GOP House candidate who supports LGBT rights (to my present, captured-in-amberin-the-moment way-of-thinking) must be either a) insincere, or b) in the wrong party (but there’s redress for this). Sorry, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. I believe that 5 million guncontrol advocates should get together and join the NRA (which claims a membership of 4.3 million), vote out the hard core gun nuts (the ones who think Junior should get a howitzer for Christmas), and the next day add the Brady Law to its membership platform. (But, see “laziness,” above.) and I am not saying that there aren’t good Republicans—gay and

straight—who want the same things for themselves and their families that I want for mine. I was a very right-of-center member of the Grand Old Party during the mid-90s—a reaction, I realize now, to the entitlement and corruption that marked the early Bill Clinton years. I have since made peace with Clinton, and both my beliefs and my political self-discovery have matured into selfknowledge that I am left-of-center, with some traditionalist values (like a gay Mike Logan on “Law and Order: Criminal Intent,” but less boozy). On Tuesday, July 31, U.S. District Judge Vanessa Bryant, in Hartford, Connecticut, issued a 104-page decision, in which she ruled that a provision in the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act violates the Fifth Amendment’s guarantee of equal protection. This is the fifth federal judge to rule that DOMA is repellant to the U.S. Constitution. Bryant—who was appointed to the federal bench by George W. Bush—ruled that the provision, which denies federal recognition of tax, health, and other benefits to married same-sex couples, “obligates the federal government to single out a certain category of marriages as excluded from federal recognition, thereby resulting in an inconsistent distribution of federal marital benefits.” She added that “many courts have concluded that homosexuals have suffered a long and significant history of purposeful discrimination.” The ink on Bryant’s ruling was barely dry when the House Republican leadership—which has made itself the guardian of DOMA’s sacred screed since Attorney General Eric Holder decided last year to no

longer waste tax dollars defending the indefensible—announced that it would continue to represent the interests of bigots and the narrowminded, by hiring outside legal counsel to fly to the nation’s far reaches when danger exists that American citizens might exercise their rights as free men and women. That sends a powerfuly bad message that is impossible to ignore. Although I have no allegiance to the party of Jefferson, Jackson, FDR, and Obama, I would challenge any gay American to name another issue as important to the future of civil rights as marriage equality. I don’t think that civil unions are a terrible idea, but I understand the outrage of those who believe that a right for one should be a right for all. This is plain fairness. For House Republicans to throw ideological red meat to bigots and demagogues is an endorsement of hate, and in this moment, those gay Republicans who give their political or monetary support to GOP House candidates are endorsing hatred, plain and simple. I don’t know if North Miami pastor Jack Hakimian hates gays as much as his words would indicate, but through his sermons, he is creating another generation of bigots and small-thinkers, and for what? A regular paying job? The satisfaction of being shepherd to the anchorless and rudderless? Maybe 5 million LGBT Americans should descend upon Chick-fil-A and order “Santorum shakes” to make the point that we may not like bigotry, but we think so little of it that we will ignore your narrow-mindedness, and show you true power, to forgive as well as to buy. But I would rather take my money—and my vote—elsewhere.H

everal years ago, one of the area Pride organizations started working with the local Habitat for Humanity chapter, to raise funds to build a home for a local family. Although they fell short of their goal, they did raise over $5,000 to assist with the construction—and they raised awareness of an important issue, while helping to gather a base of volunteers from the LGBT community with an eye to helping build future homes for less fortunate families. Recently, Habitat—which was founded in 1976 in Americus, Georgia, and includes among its international corps of volunteers former President Jimmy Carter—finished work on five new homes in Oakland Park. Volunteer Coordinator Eliot Imhoff was so inspired, that he is now working on three additional homes. “Right now, we have all of the paperwork filed with the city of Oakland Park, and are working with King Automotive, BankAtlantic, and Wells-Fargo Bank,” Imhoff says. “In conjunction with Christ

United Church, we will be breaking ground to help three more deserving families. Many people don’t understand families in the homes don’t get a free ride,” he explains. “They have to help in the building of the home. The program is meant to give them a new lease on life, and help them with the responsibility, and giving them a sense of pride for their future,” Imhoff stresses. “Habitat Broward brings together people from all walks of life to work in partnership with deserving families in need,” Imhoff explains. “Habitat for Humanity strengthens families, neighborhoods, and communities. Our mission is to eradicate substandard housing, and to build simple, decent, affordable housing for those with low incomes.” Imhoff says he started working with Habitat as a volunteer following Hurricane Katrina, going to Biloxi, Mississippi, and assisting with the rebuilding effort there. He says he found real inspiration helping his fellow men. “Since 1983, Habitat

Broward has built more than 320 homes, and we are always in need of volunteers,” he says. “Not only with the building of the homes, but in all facets of Habitat. We also have the Habitat Re-Store [at 505 W Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale], which was helped by local humanitarian Ginny Miller, who assisted with the funding. You can find almost anything for the home, from building supplies to furniture,” Imhoff notes. In addition to volunteers, Imhoff says,

“We are always looking for additional sponsors within the community, who are capable of contributing [money and materials], and those in the trade who can step forward and assist in the construction process.” Imhoff suggests those who are interested in participating with Habitat Broward in whatever fashion should visit the main office (3564 N Ocean Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, in the BankAtlantic building). LOCAL RACE SPOTLIGHT:

CHRIS Mancini Surges; Questions Record of Broward State Attorney Mike Satz By ARNE BLACK “Nobody should be in office for 36 years,” Chris Mancini says, and he has a point. The former Federal prosecutor is speaking of the current Broward County State Attorney, Mike Satz, who Mancini intends to unseat in the upcoming August 14th Democratic Primary. Satz was first elected to the post in 1976, when Gerald Ford was President of the United States, and has held it ever since. “He keeps saying that he’s been re-elected. He submits his name, no one runs against him, and he gets reappointed to the position,” says Mancini. “If you analyze Satz’s wins and losses in court for the past three years, he has the highest lost-case rate in the state of Florida. He likes to say that he’s only lost 641 cases. Those are major cases involving murders, robberies, and homicides, in addition to DUI cases, which, to me, are equally as dangerous,” Mancini adds. “If you are on the

highway, the most likely way you’re going to get injured is by some drunk driver. Satz has an enormous loss rate in prosecuting these people.” When approached about his failure in court, Satz points to the plea bargains he negotiates. “Almost 40 percent of his plea bargain cases are drug-residue cases,” Mancini asserts. “Cocaine or marijuana is found on people, or in cars stopped for routine traffic violations. These people aren’t a danger to the public. It’s ridiculous to cite those cases as meaningful. There’s no public protection going on here. There’s no violent crime being stopped or eliminated.” In the past few years, major crime has risen in Broward County, after having taken a dip in 2009, with crime against gays on the increase. “I don’t believe there has been an openly-gay person hired at the State Attorney’s office in any position of responsibility,” says

Mancini. “If the purpose of the State Attorney’s office in a diverse community like Broward County is to represent minority groups, Satz has failed completely by not extending a position to the gay community,” he adds. “Gays are the target of robbery at nightclubs late at night, as well as being the victims of the actual employees of those clubs. If the State Attorney wanted to do something about this, he could have targeted those individuals who come into this community with the sole purpose of robbing gays,” Mancini notes, pledging to actively pursue such cases. “[Satz’s] whole system is geared to running large numbers of cases through the system, to give the appearance that he is protecting the public. All the cases that Satz talks about are the ones in which he’s ridden on the coattails of the Feds. After the federal officers have made a case, he tags along and cleans up

the leftovers,” says Mancini. “What I’d like to know,” Mancini asks, “is why he hasn’t filed a single prosecution from the Scott Rothstein ponzi scheme? RICHARD CIMOCH: A Long-Time Activist Steps Back Into the Arena By DALE MADISON Richard Cimoch has been involved in South Florida’s LGBT community for over two decades, serving on the board of such organizations such as Pride South Florida, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg of his activism, political and otherwise. An early supporter of Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential run, Cimoch has been a member of the Broward County Democratic Executive Committee, and is a former Secretary of the Dolphin Democratic Club. Cimoch, a native of Philadelphia, served on the Human Rights Campaign, and is a former Co-Chair of Pride South Florida, as well as the Pride Center at Equality Park. In the August 14th primary, Cimoch is a candidate for Democratic Precinct Committeeman, Richard Cimoch Precinct 004, which covers the area

around west Wilton Manors, from the North Andrews Avenue Bridge, to West Oakland Park Boulevard. The former Penn State Nittany Lion says that voter turnout is key to his party’s victory, and believes his record as a voter activist will translate to numbers at the polls come November. Cimoch says that since his announcement for precinct committeeman, he has helped a few dozen voters to update their polling eligibility, or to register outright. “I have always been proud of the connection with motivating people to get out and vote, and we will need turnout that’s higher than normal to ensure an Obama victory,” Cimoch says. “Florida is crucial to Obama’s victory, and as gay men and women, we have a lot to lose if he doesn’t win.”H

Democrats’ 2012 Marriage Equality Plank Protects the Rights of All Americans By JUSTIN FLIPPEN

A

s a former official voting delegate to the 2008 Democratic National Convention,

I’m proud to see the Party of the People continue to stand for the equality of ALL the people of our nation, and move towards adopting marriage equality in the official party platform. Democrats recognize that our national community is truly a family and has many members, including LGBT Americans. President Obama’s leadership on—and the Democratic support of—LGBT equality are unparalleled in history. The passage of the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act, the

repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, legal efforts to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), and the advocacy that we LGBT Americans have the right to civil marriage and an equal and full seat at the table of American society, are all a direct result of persistent and successful efforts of grassroots and equality advocates, President Obama’s leadership, and Democratic congressional support. Democratic support of LGBT equality, economic relief for

the middle class, protection of our environment and national resources, development of clean and renewable energy, social justice, civil rights, and women’s rights are just a few of the important reasons to support the Democratic Party. In 2012, we voting Americans owe a duty to ourselves and our posterity to re-elect President Obama, and to re-elect and elect Democrats to the Senate and House of Representatives.H

here are 125 or so brewers in Belgium, a country the size of Maryland. Now, we know this fact because we’ve visited, oh, a good 20 or so of these establishments where the beer and ale samples run freely. It was all very righteous, we assure you, since we were touring Trappist, Cistercian, and Benedictine monasteries when we happened upon the occasional brew. Our favorite was the Trappist Abbey of Saint Sixtus of Westvleteren, near Belgium’s border with France, where the monks produce three different beers. Each brand has a different color cap (green, blue and our favorite yellow), which also contains all the prudent information about the brew, since the bottles

affeine has been stimulating Americans with its get-up-and-go power for years. Up to 90 percent of Americans consume some sort of caffeine to get through their days. The U.S. has made caffeine a big part of its morning ritual, with that morning zip from coffee or energy drinks an essential part of the day. Without this morning stimulant to sharpen the mind and calm the nerves, most Americans would grumble at the start of their workday, or any day at all for that matter. In reality, caffeine is a very powerful drug and can make most peoples’ minds crave its addictive influence. When consuming anything within your diet, moderation is the key. Overloading this substance in the body can have very adverse side effects, and create a possible addiction. The recommended amount of daily caffeine consumption is 300 milligrams (about two cups of coffee). But most

Americans consume on average 600 mg or more per day. If you are drinking four 8 oz. cups or more of coffee or energy drinks a day, you are in the upper ranges of abusing this drug. The international medical community does recognize caffeine withdrawal as a medical syndrome, and drinking more than the recommended amount will put you into this category. These shocking facts may curb some of your over-indulgence when that next coffee craving or energy drink fix comes to mind, if your insomnia doesn’t get to you first. That’s right: Too much caffeine during the day causes insomnia at night, making that next morning start even tougher without our fix of the good stuff. Irritability can be another side effect of the withdrawal symptoms, making the brain crave caffeine to stay awake. Coffee can have a varied range of caffeine in each 8 oz. cup. Ground coffee, using

the home-brewed drip method, can have anywhere from 100 to 200 mg of caffeine per 8 oz. serving. The caffeine intensity can vary among famous brand coffees. Starbucks® and McDonalds® have much less than your home-brewed Maxwell House. These restaurant-bought coffees and lattés are on the lower end of caffeine for three to five times the price. (Only Starbucks® Pike Place has more than 330mg in a 16 oz. serving.), Caffeine-wise, you may want to worry about the coffee you make at home first. Energy drinks and soft drinks can really throw you for a loop with their caffeine levels. Energy drinks seem to be all the rage, but surprisingly they’re also on the low end of the scale. Red Bull® has 80 mg in an 8.4 oz. can, whereas Monster® and Rockstar® have 80 mg in an 8 oz. serving. Topping the charts of the energy drinks is 5 Hour Energy® with 207 mg in a 2 oz. serving. Soft drinks do not follow far behind with

their caffeine production. RC Cola tops the chart at 48 mg of caffeine per 12 oz. serving, followed by Coca-Cola® (even diet) with 47 mg. By comparison, Pepsi® contains far less, with only 37 mg, followed by Dr Pepper® at 36 mg. Chocolate cannot be left off the list, holding as much as 70 mg in a 2 oz. serving of Baker’s chocolate. Sweet or dark chocolate is not far behind, with 40 mg for a 2 oz. serving, followed by 12 mg in a 2 oz. piece of milk chocolate. Tea is also another caffeine culprit. The longer you brew tea, the more caffeine can be extracted from the leaf. A one-minute brewed tea can have 9 to 33 mg, whereas a three-minute tea can have 20 to 50mg. Now the next time your energy is feeling low, don’t be afraid to have some caffeine. Just remember to know how much is in the cup or glass before it becomes a problem.H

O

ne could say without any irony that Greater Fort Lauderdale’s Gayborhood is truly blessed in its abundance of places of worship, where both the LGBT and the straight can find comfort and connection to the mysteries of the universe with likeminded (and “like-souled”) individuals seeking nourishment for the spirit. One congregation that calls Wilton Manors—and, more specifically, the antique district—“home” is Shine Ministries, a small Pentecostal church located on North Dixie Highway, led by “out” pastors Jayeson Owen and Michelle Lugo. Owen—known as “P.J.” growing up in South Carolina and North Florida—recalls getting more serious about his faith following graduation from high school, when he decided to attend the Assembly of God College in Lakeland. Early on in his academic life, he decided that he should be “up front” about his sexual identity with the school’s dean, so he scheduled an appointment, and announced that he was gay. In a line reminiscent of “Sordid Lives,” the dean told Owen, “You are not participating in your own recovery.” After returning to South Carolina to enroll at Clemson University, Owen began working with a group of transgendered and transsexual persons, and he was asked to work with the

group in “drag.” During his first year working with the T community, Owen found himself running late for a meeting one night, so he compensated by speeding over the Pastor Jayeson posted limit. Owens “I saw the red and blue flashing light behind me,” Owen, now 34, recalls. “I pulled to the side of the road, and was arrested for going 10 miles per hour over the limit.” That was only the start of it. After being booked into jail, Owen asked a corrections officer for permission to use the restroom. The answer was shocking. “We don’t allow faggots to use the bathroom,” he was told. It’s the kind of moment that can have a profound impact on the rest of one’s life, and work.

After finishing school, Owen moved to Broward County, and took a job teaching. “I loved teaching,” says Owen, but he knew that “there was just something Pastor missing. I heard about Michelle Shine Ministries, and Lugo I liked what I saw. Words to gospel songs had always kept me close to God. I was at the beach one day listening to a couple near me, and they were also discussing Shine Ministries. That week, I attended my first Pride event, and Shine had a booth— it was the first time I knew there were gay Christians,” Owen remembers. “I began a Bible study in my home.” Owen began to work more closely with the ministry at a time when he was experiencing his own personal upheaval, one familiar to

a great many. “At the time, my home was in foreclosure. I was trying to get through this— and to personally ‘shine’—when I was notified that someone had passed on, and had left me some money for a new home.” At around the same time, Owen continues, “the call came from First Congregational Church, and they asked me to teach a small class.” His life had taken a 180-degree turn for the better. Owen has no hesitation about whom he credits. “HE truly does work in mysterious ways.” Of the worship at Shine Ministries, Owen says, “We reject the legalism of Pentecostalism. We embrace that God is love 100 percent. We also believe in SODA: ‘Significance, Opportunity, Destiny, and Authenticity.’ We believe this is how we should live our lives— that you have to put yourself out into the Universe.” Shine Ministries—located at 2401 North Dixie Highway, in the same building as the Scissorium and Cricket Finds—holds services at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays, and 7 p.m. on Wednesdays. For more information about services, and a wide array of activities like snorkeling in the Florida Keys, music festivals, free weekly flapjack nights, and other events, visit mayweshine.weebly.com.H

Summer Blaze of Fashion By MANLEY GUY

T

he 94 days of Summer 2012 are more than a season—they reflect a state of mind about how you see yourself. I’m not talking here about shedding a few pounds, or toning up an incorrigible buttock. (Who can’t benefit from that, no matter how S&M—Stand & Model—perfect you may be?) It’s about dressing like a big boy who knows the difference between jammies and a dressing robe, and how to dress for Rosie’s Sunday Funday as well as Friday date night at J. Marks. Whether during those long sunny days at work, or for lost weekends in your fave, off-duty threads, SUM12 means loosening up—but not quite letting yourself go completely slacker—with relaxed suits, an even more relaxed “what-the-hell” attitude (which screams “time to ditch work”), that translates to khakis and a polo shirt. Ready? Time to get real. Get Rid of It If you haven’t worn it in a year—say “buh-bye.” Out with the Old (Swim Trunks) …

snap

in with the blue. It just so happens that the ultimate manly color—especially in SUM12—looks amazing near the ocean. (And on you.) Casual Button-Downs It’s summer: Be loose (just not with the Goose, or the mousse). Washed cottons create a rumpled-vibe that that makes every day Casual Friday. Button-down collars, contrasting stitching, bold colors or patterns—all make a casual shirt anything but careless. Polo, Pony? “The Great Gatsby” hits theaters this Christmas, auteur Baz Luhrmann’s take on the F. Scott Fitzgerald literary classic about isolation and excess. (Oh, yeah— Leonardo DiCaprio is in it!) Polo shirts with tipped sleeves, stripes of any size, and contrast collars add a throwback feel to SUM12, and make you look like you are in the thick of it at Ascot (“chin-chin” to Liz and Pip). Ride ’Em, Cowboy Men of Scandals and Ramrod take note: Colorful denim is experiencing a

“moment,” and an understated shortsleeve button down makes me warm, Daddy. Toss it up a wrung, Hoss, if your below-the-waist wardrobe leaves you limp. Shirts, Not Baggers T’s are must-have warm-weather basics, an American tradition that is the perfect seasonal skin—but nothing with holes, Skippy (and see “Get Rid of It,” above). Sunglasses That Say “You” Be bold in style, with shades that fit your face and clothes, and make you distinctive from all your friends. Summer Sportcoats Ask my editor: Hot weather is no excuse to lose the jacket. Substitute lined, wool sportcoats for lighter, easier fabrics, like linen. Whatever feels comfy, these look great with a pair of jeans, and T-shirt or collarless job. Woof. Are You Watching Me Now? For SUM12, get yourself an affordable timepiece that has a chunky face, flexible band, and rugged, Steampunky details (plus water resistance—you are

planning to hit the beach, right?) that ooze manliness for even the most elfin twink, and will make you look sharp, even if— big deal— you’re running late. Walk in These Shoes SUM12 is loafers, boat shoes, and white tennis shoes—none of which require socks.H

WELLS FARGO BANK Old Western Service, Gayborhood Friendliness

FATHER BILL COLLINS

TOM SMITH

CEO, Poverello Center

By DALE MADISON

I

n 1864, Henry Wells, founder of Wells Fargo Bank said, “We have one very powerful business rule, it is concentrated in one word: Courtesy.” It’s nice to see that, 144 years after the death of Wells (who also started American Express), that watch word is still very much alive in the bank that bears his name. The Wilton M a n o r s branch (or “store,” as the company calls its local operations) at Five Points has something of a Gayborhood b a c k s t o r y. Construction on the building—

located at the conjunction of Wilton Drive, Dixie Highway, and Northeast 26th Street— was started around three years ago, but there was a lengthy gap in construction times. Then all at once, or so it seemed, the building was completed, occupied and staffed as if it had been part of the local scenery for ages. In June, the Five Points Wells Fargo store participated in the Stonewall Summer Pride Festival and Parade, entering the cavalcade with a beautiful stage coach drawn by four stunning horses. “As a symbol of our heritage, image, and values, we have re-created these beautiful coaches,” says Wilton Manors store manager Mitch Bloom. “We have these placed around the country. The one this year used at Stonewall was brought from Atlanta,” he adds. “Jack, the dog on top of the coach, is so amazing. He is the brother of the original mascot, Jack, who died last year.” Bloom is proud of his company’s commitment to LGBT rights, and their

involvement in the community. As Bloom relates it, twenty five years ago, Wells Fargo made a commitment to create a welcoming workplace environment for LGBT team members. In 1987 Well Fargo included “sexual orientation” in its corporate nondiscrimination statements, and in 1992, the 160-year-old financial services company’s legendary stagecoach made its first LGBTcentered appearance at Los Angeles Pride. Within the decade (1998), they extended benefits to domestic partners. In 2004, they added “gender-identity and expression” to the non-discrimination policy. In 2010, they became a lead sponsor with GLSEN’s Safe Space campaign, funding 15,000 “Safe Space Kits” to help protect children across the country. “Wells Fargo has a Pride Team Members Network, which is comprised of not just the LGBT community, but also those who are allies and friends,” says Bloom. “They

come out in droves to help with any event that we have. I am the vice president of the team, and am so proud to serve. We have over 70 active members, and they are out there whenever there is an event.” Bloom and his team members keep Henry Wells’ commitment to courtesy and community involvement in the forefront of their minds. “We are having at least one team at the Poverello Bowl-A-Thon on August 11, and we will have a booth there to answer questions.” Bloom says that Wells Fargo is committed to helping the individuals who comprise our village in these trying times. “Our Opportunity Package allows someone a new opportunity to have a checking and savings account,” he explains. “If you have had problems with credit, some banks shut you out of the system—that’s not the way we work,” adding, “Every person needs a second chance.”H

Stork’s Bakery, Coffee House & Café By RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN

W

e admit it. We’re a sucker for a Pilgrim Wrap. Although we were first introduced to the sandwich years ago while living in Provincetown, Massachusetts, land of the Mayflower, we recently reacquainted ourselves with the joy of this taste treat at Stork’s Bakery, Coffee House & Café in Wilton Manors. The local variety serves up a delicious sliced oven-roast turkey combo with cornbread stuffing, cranberry vinaigrette, chutney, beefsteak tomato, lettuce and mayo in a spinach wrap. At $8.49, it’s the signature sandwich of Stork’s, a local institution for the past 15 years. Over that time, there’s been a few changes to the menu, but the Pilgrim Wrap has always made the cut.

Pilgrim Wrap: Unbelievably Tasty!

In case you’re new to the neighborhood, or haven’t stopped by recently for a fast, wholesome meal, Stork’s blends a menu of salads, sandwiches, soups, and quiches with their famous housemade desserts. This day, we tasted our way through a fresh-from-the-stove Creamy Veggie Soup ($8.95), a smack-yourlips Caprese Salad with field greens, tomato, mozzarella, basil, chives, and cracked black pepper ($7.99), a Baked Eggplant Lasagna ($10 per pound) that had just the right amount of heft to counter the light tomato sauce, and a large slice of Storkberry Pie, which, if you haven’t tried it, is heaven between a crust. The Storkberry, which should have its own patent, is a unique blend of strawberries, cherries, blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries, with a flaky lattice-work oatmeal crust, at $4.00 per slice. At breakfast, the spotlight is on Stork’s 13 different whole bean blends of coffee, with Snickerdoodle Decaf our vote for the moment, though they’ve got an equally large variety of fresh brewed teas. Where else could you find a tea called Get Gorgeous, which, when consumed, promises to produce the clearest skin this side of Snow White? At breakfasttime, it’s an aroma orgy inside the shop, as

coffees fence with baked goods for bragging rights to um-um good. Yet as great as the café and coffee are, Stork’s shines when the bakery is placed front-andcenter. There is nowhere else in town with as consistently a great German Chocolate Cake: Moist chocolate with coconut sweetness,

German Chocolate Cake... MMMM!

tempered with a sprinkle of pecan at $4.15 a slice. Another favorite, which is often out of stock, is the White Chocolate Pistachio Cheesecake ($4.15). It should be illegal, and maybe it is, since it seems to vanish from the display case as soon as it arrives. It’s a white

chocolate pistachio ganache that’s made sinful with the addition of pictachio pieces that circle the rim of the outside of the cheesecake. The first bite will tell you you’re in big trouble. Those who know such things swear by the Kahlua Marble Cheesecake ($4.15), with its coffee swirl atop a dark chocolate crumb crust. While it’s too adult for us to even try, the baker insists it’s a winner. So, too, is Stork’s within the community. It is not unusual to see the company logo on charity fundraisers for not-for-profit organizations, particularly within the LGBT arena. They continue to be a major presence during the annual SmartRide (this year, it’s November 16-17), as well as the monthly Tea Cruise benefiting the Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation. Thank them for that when you next drop by, and, of course, tell them Agenda sent you. H

Baba Ghanoush

This Week’s Delicious Recipe By JEAN DOHERTY Eggplant’s lovely purple skin adds a colorful punch to many healthy recipes, and it’s great texture is sturdy enough to stand up to the fire of a grill! You’re most familiar with it here in the States served up breaded and fried, and covered in melted cheese—NOT healthful fare! Chunks of eggplant can be roasted and pureed into a silky, smooth dip known in the Middle East and elsewhere as Baba Ganoush, which in Arabic means “father of coquetry,” or flirting—which has been interpreted that it was invented by a member of a harem, although “ghanoush” may have come from a personal name, too.

Remove from oven, and place into a large bowl of cold water. Remove from water, and peel the skin off. Place the eggplant, lemon juice, tahini, sesame seeds, and garlic in an electric blender, and puree. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Transfer eggplant mixture to a medium-sized mixing bowl, and slowly mix in olive oil. Refrigerate for 3 hours before serving. Enjoy with pita bread, chips, raw veggies, or whatever tickles your fancy, after all—you are the chef!H

Ingredients: •

2 medium eggplants

4 cloves of garlic

¼ cup of lemon juice

2 tablespoons of sesame seeds

2 tablespoons of tahini

1-and ¼ teaspoons of salt

Extra virgin olive oil

Preheat oven to 400 degrees, and lightly grease a baking sheet. Place eggplant on baking sheet, and make holes in the skin with a fork. Roast them for 30 to 40 minutes, turning occasionally, or until soft.

Although born in Dublin, Ireland, chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.
