Hank Williams, Jr. Launches Into Anti-Gay, Anti-Obama Screed
By CLIFF DUNN
FORT WORTH, TEXAS – During a Labor Day weekend performance, country singer Hank Williams Jr. launched into a lengthy tirade against President Barack Obama which included critical comments about the chief executive’s support for marriage equality and LGBT civil rights. On Sunday, while headlining at the Stockyards Music Festival, Williams, 63, paused to say, “We’ve got a Muslim for a President who hates cowboys, hates cowgirls, hates fishing, hates farming, loves gays, and we hate him!” Earlier, Williams had complained about “queer guitar pickers” during a performance of his song “All My Rowdy Friends Have Settled Down.” The singer also enjoined progressive and proimmigrant lawmakers to “move to Mexico” after he performed “We Don’t Apologize for America.” Williams has melded the message of his country music with extreme
When a confused Kilmeade asked, “Who’s the enemy?” Williams shouted, “Obama!” Fox co-host Gretchen Carlson quickly distanced herself from Williams’ remarks. “I just want to say that we disavow any of All His ‘Phobic Friends: Hank Williams Jr. those comments or analogies that he’s made, at least I’m going to say that, disavow the analogy between Hitler and the president,” she offered. After his Fox appearance, ESPN pulled W i l l i a m s signature single, “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight,” as the anthem for Monday Night Football, which of the biggest political mistakes had been used in some form since ever,” likening it to “Hitler playing 1989. PREZISTA is a prescription anti-HIV medicine used with ritonavir and other antiHIV medicines to treat adults with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) infection. PREZISTA is a type of anti-HIV medicine called a protease inhibitor. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). When used with other HIV medicines, PREZISTA may help to reduce the amount of HIV in your blood (called “viral load”). PREZISTA may also help to increase the number of white blood cells called CD4 (T) cell which help fight off other infections. Reducing the amount of HIV and increasing the CD4 (T) cell count may improve your immune system. This may reduce your risk of death or infections that can happen when your immune system is weak (opportunistic infections). PREZISTA does not cure HIV infection or AIDS and you may continue to experience illnesses associated with HIV-1 infection, including opportunistic infections. You should remain under the care of a doctor when using PREZISTA. Do not take PREZISTA with any of the following medicines: • alfuzosin (Uroxatral®) • dihydroergotamine (D.H.E. 45®, Embolex®, Migranal®), ergonovine, ergotamine (Cafergot®, Ergomar®) methylergonovine • cisapride • pimozide (Orap®) • oral midazolam, triazolam (Halcion®) • the herbal supplement St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) • the cholesterol lowering medicines lovastatin (Mevacor®, Altoprev®, Advicor®) or simvastatin (Zocor®, Simcor®, Vytorin®) • r ifampin (Rifadin®, Rifater®, Rifamate®, Rimactane®) • sildenafil (Revatio®) only when used for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. Republican Platform Takes Hard Line Against Gay Marriage TAMPA — A strongly-worded platform approved last week by the Republican National Convention (RNC) would ban federal recognition of marriage equality through a constitutional amendment, along with outlawing all abortions and changing the nature of delivery of Medicare benefits. With a warning that the “American Dream is at risk,” the platform opens with a pledge that a Republican Party in power will “begin anew, with profound changes in the way government operates; the way it budgets, taxes and regulates.” “This ambitious blueprint projects a sea change in the way that government works,” said Gov. Bob McDonnell (R-Virginia), chairman of the RNC platform committee. “It offers a solution for workers without jobs, families without savings, and neighborhoods without hope.” In spite of the efforts of gay delegates, including Log Cabin Republicans, and libertarian-leaning members (Ron Paul supporters among them), the RNC platform champions the rights of states and the federal government not to recognize gay marriage, and calls for a constitutional amendment that defines marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, a prominent Hispanic Democrat, called parts of the platform “draconian” and “extreme,” and said of Romney, “What you have seen from him is that he does one thing, he says another.”
Survey of Illinois Delegates Shows Same-Sex Marriage May Help Obama CHICAGO, ILLINOIS – A new survey of Illinois delegates to the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina this week indicates that President Obama’s support for legalizing same-sex marriage helps his reelection chances. Almost 78 percent

of respondents to a Chicago Daily Herald survey said that the president’s announcement this year supporting marriage equality will help him among independent voters. The remainder thinks his position will neither help nor hurt him.
The responses of the 40 Prairie State delegates stands in stark contrast to those of GOP delegates surveyed by the newspaper prior to last week’s Republican National Convention in Tampa. In those answers, 33 percent said that Republican nominee Mitt Romney’s opposition to gay marriage will help him with independent voters. Only 4 percent said that his position will hurt his chances, while 64 percent think it will neither help nor hurt him. In Illinois, lawmakers have approved civil unions, while a suit seeking to legalize marriage equality is working its way through the state’s courts.
last year to Arsenal Technical High School. The openly gay 17 year old was harassed by classmates who followed him home, spread rumors about his sexual activities, and threw bottles at him. Young’s mother reported the harassment to school officials several times, but was told that administrators were powerless to act because her son wasn’t able to identify his tormentors. School principal Larry Yarrell is reported to have said, “If you wear female apparel, then kids are kids and they’re going to say whatever it is that they want to say. Because you want to be different and because you choose to wear female apparel, it may happen.” Grimes gave him the stun gun for his protection. On April 16, after a group of students threatened to attack him, Young, frightened for his life, fired the weapon into the air, drawing the attention of school security personnel, who arrested him. In May, an arbitrator ruled in favor of expulsion, effective through January 2013. The district later reduced the penalty to allow Young to start classes in the fall, which must be attended at an alternative school.

Equality Forum Calls Romney “Out of Step with Business” and the “Public” P H I L A D E L P H I A , PENNSYLVANIA – Saying that the Republican presidential nominee is “out of step” with “public opinion,” the LGBT civil rights organization Equality Forum is calling for Mitt Romney to support federal legislation to protect LGBT Americans from workplace discrimination. In a statement this week, the Philadelphia-based advocacy group noted that although in “2007, Republican Vice Presidential nominee Paul Ryan voted in favor of the unsuccessful attempt to amend the federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act [ENDA] to include sexual orientation and gender identity,” Romney himself “has taken no position on including [these] in ENDA.” “With Gov. Romney’s support, amending ENDA to include sexual orientation and gender identity would be a slam dunk,” said Malcolm Lazin, Equality Forum’s executive director. “His equivocation on amending ENDA makes Gov. Romney out of step with the Fortune 500 and public opinion.” Lazin noted that while both President Obama and the GOP’s own vice presidential candidate support amending ENDA to include sexual orientation and gender identity, the Republican platform takes no position on it. He added that recent polls show over 75 percent of Americans supporting the inclusion of sexual orientation in federal ENDA, including a majority of Democrats, Republicans, Independents, seniors, Catholics and small business owners.H

the heavy rains from Hurricane Isaac, has been rescheduled for Sunday, Sept. 30. The organizers have planned the community-wide effort to register as many LGBT voters as possible, and to draw awareness to issues of political importance to the gay community. Beginning at 2 p.m., local drag performers Nikki Adams, Nicolette, and Jersey Dion (as well as other possible entertainers, not named at press time) will lead a “barcrawling” crowd through eight local watering holes, including Sidelines Sports Bar, Bill’s Filling Station, The Manor, Rosie’s Bar & Grill, New Moon, Matty’s On the Drive, The Alibi, and Boom. The organizers say that the crowd will move in 45-minute intervals, where voter registrars and Democratic Party officials will be available to speak to potential voters. From each bar, it is expected that a larger group will travel to the next club. “This is the real McCoy, there’s no denying it,” said Ron Mills, campaign director for the GLBT Democratic Caucus. In a statement, the organizers noted, “While the event may seem to be a partisan effort, the recently published Republican Party Platform and the soon-to-be adopted Democratic Party Platform are undeniably contradictory, and the LGBT community cannot ignore their intent as it relates to their rights and forward progress for equality.”

“She will also be doing a benefit concert for us the very next day in the Au Rene Theater at the Broward Center, which I personally cannot wait for.” DeCarlo also noted that last year’s event, which was presided over by grand marshal Margaret Cho, attracted over 2,500 participants. As well as starring on Fox-TV’s “The Wanda Sykes Show,” the comedian is a staple of broadcast and network television, including several specials on HBO and CBS and a recurring role in the CBS comedy “The New Adventures of Old Christine.” Her first HBO special, “Wanda Sykes: Sick & Tired,” was nominated for a 2007 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special. “Modern Family” Creator Sends Gay Marriage Tweet to Ann Romney in Tampa TAMPA - The executive producer and creator of ABC’s hit sitcom “Modern Family” fired off an acerbic tweet about gay marriage last week to Ann Romney, after the wife of the Republican presidential nominee said that the program about a non-traditional family is her favorite TV show. “All politics is local.” - Tip O’Neill
I
was at a barbecue over the weekend at my boyfriend’s family’s place, and before the corn on the cob had even been thrown onto the gas grill, someone asked me for whom I was voting in November’s presidential election. After good-naturedly breaking his balls about the sacro-sanctity of my vote and its very personal nature, I told him which of the candidates was more in line with my political views, circa-2012, and was immediately assailed with comments, pro and con, about my “guy.” I honestly don’t have a lot of patience for this kind of ‘polite conversation,’ because I was a radio and television talk show host for ten years, and it doesn’t take much to set my gorge to rising, especially during the quadrennial presidential election cycle. There is very little in the current political climate (that’s watchable for more than three minutes, anyway) that smacks of intelligent, articulated, sober, and rational conversation about the most important issues that matter to us, as a community and as a nation. The talking heads are spewing the talking points, and talk radio is so Agenda-driven (pardon the pun), that Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity have become the equivalent of World Wrestling Entertainment “stars:” Loudmouthed, opinionated regurgitators of a canned message that won’t brook (or invite) any debate. (There’s plenty of this to go around on the Left, too, but my homo-animus is momentarily directed towards the ’tards of the Right, thank you.) I know when I watch one of the tights-clad personae created by promoter Vince McMahon that I am being treated to Theatre of the Grotesque, with larger-than-life depictions of dime-novel villains

(or for a more recent, pop-culturerelevant specie, Tom Hardy’s Bane in the latest “Batman” film is a perfect example), little more than caricatures to tease some Jungian archetypal yearning of the psyche. That’s all well on TV—but it has no place in a grownup political conversation, and certainly shouldn’t inform a citizen’s voting choice. (You can stop laughing now.) Unfortunately, there’s no such “mental warning label” accompanying the likes of Rush Limbaugh as when you are watching the antics of say, Hulk Hogan. But Limbaugh is no less a clown for all that he advocates policies and positions which are oh-so-less-thanfunny. But at least I personally know that the pill-popping hypocrite is a clown—what excuse do his legions of Ditto-heads have to offer? Are they so starved for guidance and a firm hand (“paging Dr. Freud”) that they are willing to overlook the dishonesty, fact-twisting, and blatant lies that spew from his nicotinestained lips? They obviously don’t mind that Limbaugh never cast a vote for Ronald Reagan (because he didn’t register to vote until he was 35). Telling other people how they should think is easier, I guess, than making up your own mind. There’s nothing wrong with being a Democrat, or a Republican, or a Libertarian (small or large “l”), or a progressive, traditionalist, ad inf initum, ad nauseum. What’s wrong is refusing to be an HONEST one of those things. The modern political party system, as practiced in the U.S., is two major corporations competing for sponsorship dollars. Period. To say it a different way, the DNC and the RNC are like Ford or General Motors, competing for you as a consumer of their product, which is one of ideas. Brand loyalty is fine when it comes to soft drinks,
sports teams, and clothing. It’s okay to be a “Chevy man,” or a “Binaca boy,” but to call oneself a “Yellow Dog Democrat” in the context of a modern information age is being willfully ignorant, something which, sadly doesn’t un-qualify a person to vote. My respect and admiration for FDR isn’t about to cloud my worldview concerning the gross and corrupt Vito Lopez of Brooklyn, just as my reverence of Lincoln and my appreciation for Reagan won’t blind me to the disappointment of George W. Bush, or the embarrassment of Sarah Palin and Todd Akin. Nor should they you. Because I choose—when it comes to my voting franchise, anyway—to be willfully informed, I refuse to allow “brand loyalty” to inform my choice for president any more than it will impact my choice for dinner. I “enjoy” (in the broadest definition of the word) listening to Limbaugh barn-burn his way to the fringe, because I “get” that he is, on some level, playing a part (as hatefully as did Father Coughlin in the 1930s), just as I get a kick out of the acerbic barbs of the more rational (to my mind) Rachel Maddow. But I understand it to be info-tainment, and I am more likely to make a voting choice based on something that the Economist said about the euro than something Kathy Griffin said about Romney. The stakes for marriage equality, as well as ongoing efforts like the repeal of the bigoted and unAmerican Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and the passage of ENDA (which even Paul Ryan— although not Mitt Romney— supported), and lingering concerns like the final vestiges of DADT, are too high to do otherwise.H

The GOP Gets Gay By JOE HARRIS
T
he late Hunter S. Thompson would have felt comfortable lurking in the wings of Ybor City’s Honey Pot nightclub last Tuesday night, with a surreal, “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”-esque vibe to the gay bar and the several hundred Republicans-and-their-besties who had gathered for a night of “booze” (in the words of co-organizer Jimmy LaSalvia, who noted that, “This is the largest event hosted by a gay group at a Republican convention, not that size matters.”) and talking points. To underscore just exactly who was “coming to dinner” (or in this case, drinks), the RSVP email was clear: “Homocon 2012 is not a clothing optional event! We don’t care what you wear, but you do have to wear clothes.” LaSalvia, who co-founded GOProud, a group for gay conservatives, orchestrated Homocon 2012 to be an evening of strippers (who honestly weren’t all that stripped-down—in deference, I’m sure, to the Romneys, who were just down the road) and party stalwarts. And even
if Ann Coulter wasn’t in attendance (as she had been in 2010), former Romney foreign policy spokesman Richard Grenell (who was reportedly squeezed out of his Team Mitt gig because of pressure from social conservatives) was. LaSalvia’s GOProud is the only gay group thus far to endorse the Romney-Ryan ticket. The larger Log Cabin Republicans have yet to give the running mates their blessing, although the organization’s DC chapter voted last week to endorse the ticket and recommended that the national organization do likewise, with acknowledgment made for the group’s differences with Romney over points of LGBT civil rights, including marriage equality. But for LaSalvia, it was a Big Gay Tent, with same-sex marriage taking a back seat to matters of economic policy. “Before you can get married, you have to have a date,” noted LaSalvia, perhaps a little too glibly. “And everyone knows you can’t get a date without a job.” In keeping with the upbeat dynamic,
LaSalvia—perhaps with diplomacy in his mind—failed to note that GOProud itself was prohibited from attending this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference (C-PAC). There was also no mention made that after the Obama administration announced that it would no longer defend the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in federal court, it was Republican House leaders (under Speaker John Boehner) who took up the slack, with gusto and glee (no pun intended). Nor that the 2012 GOP Platform calls for enshrining DOMA as an amendment to the U.S. Constitution, forever defining marriage between a man and a woman. By way of explanation—or possibly apologia– Sarah Longwell of Young Conservatives for the Freedom to
Marry told NPR, “Well, the main thing that we want to communicate is that the freedom to marry is really consistent and in line with the conservative ideology of individual liberty, personal responsibility, family, and freedom. And so I think that conservatives tend to respond to that language. They understand that they do want to minimize government’s role in people’s lives, maximize freedom.” Maybe they’ll be more responsive— and more inclined to “maximize freedom”—in 2016.H

PAUL RYAN: Yes, He’s Cute (But We Still Can’t Vote for Him) By JARRETT TERRILL
P
aul Ryan is really something to look at, isn’t he? On the rare occasion that he smiles, it’s like heaven has just opened up before you. His square jawline, small ears, and light eyes are the stuff that we seek in models for gay magazines. He’s got that whole Abercrombie-meets-Bass Pro Shops thing going on that I find adorable. Just looking at Paul Ryan gives me a sort of “tingle” that even Chris Mathews could never understand. I become disoriented and light-headed. His appearance motivates me: I want to lace up my boots and go out to do his bidding. It’s important for America to eventually have a sexy Vice President, right? That being said – when Paul Ryan speaks to the issues, he’s clearly Satan in
a necktie. The Log Cabin Republicans don’t dare look at what the Human Rights Campaign has to say. It only took them one digit to send him straight to gay hell. He received the pitiful “0%” ranking on their congressional scorecard. Let’s say for a moment, though, that you don’t give any weight to the most powerful gay rights lobbying group in America. There are other reasons that Paul Ryan is toxic. Ryan has repeatedly professed that he serves three gods: The first almighty recipient of the congressman’s devotion is clearly the Temple of Ayn Rand. Rand, as you may know by now, is the much-maligned preacher of the “Objectivist” philosophy and doctrine of unrestrained— extreme—Free Market Capitalism. This philosophy does not allow for LGBT
persons to have any federal protections in the workforce. Ayn Rand says that you are not special for being either a minority or in the majority. You are an individual to whom anything can happen in capitalism, and your only shot at success is by being more of a carnivore than the next guy. The next house in which Ryan will worship is nestled in a little place called Vatican City. The Roman Catholic Church is always going to be greater than the sum of its parts by design: There is currently a band of wayward nuns who are saying something about contraceptives in Indiana, but they are of no consequence to the Holy SeeNo-Evil. The Pope does a better job of protecting child molesters than he does gays or women.
The last—reluctant and beleaguered— object of Paul Ryan’s heavenly gaze is Mitt Romney himself. This faux fascination will be short-lived, I guarantee. We often reward those who bestow greatness upon us with temporary adoration. Ryan recently said that he stands firmly behind Romney’s record as a “job creator.” This is great news for China, where those jobs were actually created. It doesn’t quite wash with the people of Florida, however, where our unemployment level leaves us weighing the pros and cons of prostitution in its sincerest form. I really do regret having to rain my “liberal hatred” all over Paul Ryan’s parade. Perhaps I’ll change my mind about him if I can see him with his shirt off.H

Dean Yanakis:
Fortunate to Be Helping Those Less Fortunate
By DALE MADISON
P
ersonal trainer Dean Yanakis found more than a home when he moved to South Florida: He found a calling. He relates that his move to South Florida from the northeast—first to Fort Lauderdale, and then eventually to Wilton Manors— landed him a great condo, which doubles as a home-training facility, where he works with about 30 clients a week. The move also brought him into contact with the Poverello Food Bank, which was having problems feeding clients. When he heard about the center’s Open Arms, Open Hearts food drive, Yanakis requested that a drop-off box be placed at his condo. Within one week, he had not only filled the box, but needed to call three times to have it emptied and replaced. That’s when he decided, “If I can do this with just my clients, what could I do if I made the entire complex aware?” The New York State-native called the agency, and asked that collection boxes be placed at all of the master mail boxes in his Wilton
Manors condo. Since this was at the end of season, many of the snowbirds were heading north, and in the process of cleaning out their pantries. With so many grocery items to collect, Poverello required the space of an entire van for the pickup. After Yanakis returned from a business trip to New York, he decided to immerse himself in a cause that would put those in need with work that enabled them to earn their keep. “I’d watch how so many of the charities hand out money or food, but don’t really ask for help in return. I love Poverello and the amazing work that they do. With all of those people coming in for help, why are they not volunteering to help in the food bank, in the sorting room, or in the retail store?” he wondered. “I wanted to help those who want to help themselves. So a group of friends and I got together, and we scoped out a plan to help those who are willing to put forth an effort to jump start their lives,” Yanakis explains. “We all have
special talents that we can direct to help others,” he adds. Yanakis outlines the application process for Less Fortunate. “When a person applies, we ask for all of their income—everything, none of this working under the table. We want people to be honest with us, and then we take all of their legitimate expenses—rent, utilities, car expenses, including insurance and fuel to and from work only, food—all of the basics. No alcohol, no smoking, no drugs, nothing recreational. We will then do a spread sheet. “As an example, if someone has income of $1,800, and expenses of $2,200, we will work with them to find an additional $400 to get them through the month. We partner them with someone who can help them. We recently had a man who needed someone to walk his dog, because he had had knee replacement surgery. He was willing to pay $20 a day, which made up the difference for what a young dog walker needed in order
to meet all of his monthly expenses,” Yanakis proudly notes, the perfect winwin scenario. For more information about Less Fortunate, email fldean2012@aol.com.H

What’s Inside: Now that summer is officially “over,” it’s time to cast our thoughts to all-thingsautumnal, including what the devil to wear for Halloween! (Don’t worry: My boyfriend has already gone through several “costume changes” already, including “Ash” [whoever the hell that is] from “Pokémon,” Pikachu [from the selfsame program], Dr. Frankenstein [although that may have just been a dream I had], and a zombie hunter—and those are just his discarded ideas for what I should wear.) Still and all, a high-class problem—if you ask me. Now that it’s “fall,” how about getting into that “autumnal attitude” and check out one of the first signposts of the season, Disney on Ice: Holiday Magic, which runs this weekend at the BankAtlantic Center. Find out more about all that’s happening in and around town, this week OUT in Florida. Television’s portrayal of LGBT people has come a long way since Uncle Milty pranced around in drag during primetime in the 1950s (okay, my boyfriend just reminded me of the existence of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” so never mind that last part). Seriously though, several years ago, the non-profit Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) established an index to measure the fairness and accuracy of LGBT portrayals, stories, and issues, on both broadcast and cable television, and Phoebe Moses provides a look at which networks treat us like family— and which treat us like red-headed stepchildren (with apologies to both gingers and steps), inside Style Briefs. ROCCO’S TACOS AND TEQUILA BAR
The Fiesta Begins on Las Olas
By RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN
I
t’s tough to miss the bar in Rocco’s Tacos, the popular Mexican eatery on Las Olas Boulevard. It stretches across the entire west wall of the restaurant, with five shelves full of assorted liquors including 220 types of tequila alone. Twice we tried counting the entire inventory, running out of fingers and toes long before we hit a tally of 350 bottles. The bartenders—female, cute, and obviously having a good time—take the vast stock in stride, seeming to have a sixth sense about how to find any particular label. Surrounded by carved wood, the bar looks
A Unique and Delicious Seafood Molcajete
like it belongs in a vintage pub, and sets the tone for this place that is at-once seasoned and current. This is an eatery full of attractive people having a raucous time, confirming Rocco’s Tacos place as the current in-spot to go for a good time. The fact that the food keeps pace with the high energy level of the joint is in itself a bonus. For that we can thank executive chef James Fellmann and co-owner Jason “Rocco” Mangel. The house specialty, as you might guess from the restaurant’s name, is Tacos. Select between chicken, roasted pork, spicy beef, chorizo, mushroom, shrimp, skirt steak and blackened mahi ($2.95-$4.25). Having tasted them all, on multiple occasions, we give fivestars to all the varieties, though the Cochinitas Achiote (slow-roasted pork) is particularly succulent. All tacos come in hard shell or soft corn tortillas. For California purests there is a platter of three California Fish Tacos, filled with lightlybattered and fried Mahi Mahi, cabbage slaw and avocado ranch dressing, nustled in place by a heap of spice white rice and black beans.
At $17, this is an expensive choice, made all the more so because it doesn’t really taste that great. (Where California Fish Tacos are concerned, we set the bar quite high, thanks to repeated visits to Mamá Testa Taqueria in the Hillcrest District of San Diego. Mamá, who knows these things, swears catfish is the fish of choice-not too fried, and not too covered in Mexican slaw.) At Rocco’s Tacos, every item on the menu comes with a price tag, including customarily free chips and salsa. They are given the authentic name of Totopos and cost $3. For that price, you get a basket of homemade corn chips seasoned with cumin, cinnamon, and perhaps cayenne, although the exact recipe seems to be a house secret. For $12, the servers will bring a serving cart to your table and prepare Guacamole from scratch with your choice of three different degrees of wam! We opted for medium hot, which was the perfect complement of pepper to avocado. For a meal with more substance, explore the tasty Molcajetes. Traditionally, a molcajetes is a bowl made from volcanic rock. The Rocco’s
Taco version uses the molcajetes as the baking dish for a fajita-like concoction that comes in three varieties: Seafood (shrimp, scallops, and mahi mahi, served with poblano chiles, calabaza squash, and charred tomatoes), Carne (skirt steak, chicken, and chorizo, prepared with three pepper rajas, rojo, and tequila) and Surf & Turf (steak, chorizo, chicken, and shrimp). This specialty act doesn’t come cheap-$22 for a molcajetes serving one; $38 for two. In case you’re missing the point, there is a recurring theme here—expensive and fun. Crack open your piggy bank and make the scene. And tell them Agenda sent you.H

Carrot and Beetroot Soup This Week’s Delicious Recipe By JEAN DOHERTY
This delicious and easy-to-make soup is loosely derived from Russian and Ukrainian variations of traditional borscht. (Who knew?) I made it last week because we had bought too many carrots and other veggies, including beetroot, for our juicing—and, of course, we weren’t juicing! “Right,” says I, “I’ll make a soup with that,” and I did. OMG: Everyone LOVED it.

—PART I PARIS The Moveable Feast By ROBERT ELIAS DEATON The glass pyramid of Musée du Louvre
“
If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.” Or so wrote Ernest Hemingway. Then again, Papa Hemingway killed himself, proving, we suppose, that an occasional refresher visit to Paris is never out of place. As with most things in life, the gays among us have a special gift for appreciating art, culture, rudeness, and depravation. And Paris has all four in abundance. Fortunately, the
Under the Eiffel Tower
Parisians, in their love of all things flamboyant, have grouped the homosexual community mainly in an area known as Le Marais (”The Swamp”), in the 3rd and 4th arrondissements. The average vacationer in Paris will make the rounds of the standard top ten must-sees: Musée du Louvre (1st arrondissement-- Porte des Lions, Galerie du Carrousel, or Pyramid entrances), the world-famous museum situated in a French palace housing the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo; Notre Dame Cathedral (Place du Parvis de Notre Dame, 4th arrondissement), the most architecturally stunning Gothic Cathedral in the world; Eiffel Tower (Champ de Mars in the 7th arrondissement [midwest Paris]), the iconic symbol of Paris for much of the world; Musée d’Orsay (1 Rue de la Legion d’Honneur, 7th arrondissement), a bright and airy gallery housing the largest collection of painting, sculpture, and decorative objects produced between 1848-1914; Sorbonne University which forms the historic soul of the Latin Quarter (Place du Sorbonne, 5th arrondissement), the center of scholarly
pursuits in the city; the Arc de Triomphe which crowns the end of the Champs-Elysées (Place Charles de Gaulle, 8th arrondissement), the most famous shopping street in all of Paris; the Centre Georges Pompidou (Place Georges Pompidou, 4th arrondissement), a monstrous architectural anomaly that attracts street performers, art historians and students using its library; Montmartre (18th arrondissement), a neighborhood with its art-drenched history and charming, village-like streets located at the summit of Paris with its beautiful Sacre Coeur Basilica; the Père Lachaise (Rue de Repos, “Porte du Répos,” 20th arrondissement); according to an old lover of mine, it is the most hauntingly lovely cemetery in the world, where Chopin, Collette, Marcel Proust, and Jim Morrison are laid to rest; and a Boat Tour up the Seine (rhymes with “den”) River, the equivalent of taking a gondola in Venice, but on a larger scale. There are two airports in Paris—Charles de Gaulle and Orly, with CDG the airport of choice since American Airlines and Air France fly non-stop from Miami. (Trivia point:
In the current economic climate, there are no non-stop first class flights from either Miami or Fort Lauderdale.) All business-class airline, OpenSkies, flies from Newark into Orly, but is of little interest to those of us down here in the hurricane zone. There are many reasonably-priced hotels (and many, many more unreasonably priced ones) in the city. But for high camp, there is nothing that outdoes the Hôtel du 7ème Art (20 Rue Saint Paul, 4th arrondissement). A twin-bedded room with private bath at the Hôtel du 7ème Art will set you back 75 euros per night. It’s in the center of Marias, it reeks with romance thanks to the posters from classic American throughout the place, and you’re guaranteed to hear a recording of Frank Sinatra singing “I Love Paris” at least ten times a day. “We’re with Frank on this one.” Next week, we’ll cover the waterfront and the hottest clubs in town. Fighting “MAN BOOBS” with Nutrition By ANDY KRESS
T
hroughout America there is a growing and unsightly trend popping out—literally—among men. The growing condition is called “Man Boobs,” or its proper name gynecomastia. This condition causes swelling or enlargement of the male breast, and effects one in four men, especially after age 50. With the rise in obesity, expect to see even more “Man Boobs” among your friends, or even you, if you’ve packed a few pounds and failed to take them back off. This condition can start as early as a male’s teenage year when puberty’s hormonal changes turn boys to men. While teenage chests usually stabilize and the condition dissipates after a few years, the same reversal isn’t true as we naturally age. Nutrition and diet are two of the simplest ways to escape this growing problem. There are certain kinds of foods that promote this condition in men of all ages. For instance, over-consumption of soy products is known to aid in this
problematic disease by raising estrogen and estradiol levels far past their normal ranges. Men having too much estrogen and a lack of testosterone will find this is a major contributing factor in the development of “Man Boobs.” Eating more foods that boost testosterone is very beneficial to fighting this problem, including an increase in the consumption of lean cuts of red meat, as well as organic free-range eggs. These two foods contain cholesterol, which plays a crucial role in the production of testosterone in men. There are quite a few other foods that will help boost your testosterone levels as well, such as oysters, asparagus, figs, almonds, nuts, brown rice, salmon and avocados. Try using condiments like flax seed oil and hemp seed oil in your food. This will increase your levels of omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids, which also help the production of testosterone. Eating more cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale and Brussels sprouts are beneficial to
lowering chest fat, as well as eating foods with high-fiber complex carbohydrates such as oatmeal, whole grain rice, bran cereal, quinoa, spelt and buckwheat. These types of food provide more sustained energy without the insulin and sugar spike induced by other refined carbohydrates, which cause your body to store fat and encourage development of the dreaded boobs. Having high-fiber carbohydrates also aids the digestive system and promotes efficient expulsion of waste products, helping the body be more efficient. Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, such as avocados, apples, apricots, bananas, blueberries, papayas, raspberries, beet greens, bok choy, carrots, collard greens, green beans, celery, sweet peppers, spinach, tomatoes, squash and zucchini. These are high in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and disease-fighting free radicals which help your body function optimally. Doing regular exercise is another helpful way to fight drooping pec muscles,
which compounds the appearance of gynecomastia. Using lighter weights and higher repetitions will give you your best results, for doing chest exercises in this fashion will help keep chest muscles looking very defined and lean. Be sure to switch up your exercise program often. This will guarantee to shock and confuse the muscles, giving you better results and keeping exercise new and exciting. Using these two simple techniques will help tremendously in the fight against an unflattering, fat, and sagging chest. While it’s true we’re all getting older, it’s just as true that there is absolutely no reason why you have to give in to Mother Nature. Use her to your advantage, and then just stand back and wait for the compliments. H

TOM KAUFFMAN: Bartender of the Month, September 2012 By DALE MADISON
T
om Kauffman’s life is, in many ways, like the Beatles’ song, “The Long and Winding Road.” Growing up in Rochester, New York (home of Eastman-Kodak), the talented BOOM Nightclub bartender dreamed of working for the world leader in film and camera production, and following graduation, he saw his dream fulfilled, being hired to join the industry giant’s construction and maintenance team. “Some of the projects we developed had to be within 200 thousandths of an inch, to make sure that everything ran correctly. One project took nearly five years to complete,” remembers Kauffman. After the technological revolution of digital photo production, Kauffman found himself looking for gainful employment. “After 28 years [with Kodak], I started my own construction business. I was married—but was always ‘curious.’ I decided to go into a gay bar, and I
realized that I was gay.” Kauffman’s acceptance of his sexual identity brought him to patronize the largest leather bar in Rochester, the Bachelor Forum, a local LGBT landmark for 30 years. “I was there one night, and they were short-handed, so I started helping out with bar backing,” Kauffman recalls. “At closing, the owner asked, ‘What time can you be here tomorrow?’ I ended up on the bar very quickly, and was there for two years.” The warm, intoxicating breezes of South Florida had been calling his name for some time, so in 2004 he packed up a U-Haul, and embarked for Fort Lauderdale. Arriving, he found employment in the local Levis-andleather scene at Scandals Saloon. “It was a great ride,” says Kauffman, “but then I had to have surgery on my wrists, and was no longer able to do the high/fast production that’s required at Scandals.” It wasn’t long after his convalescence
that Kauffman says he got a call from the management team at Boom. “They were beginning an early morning shift, opening at 9 a.m.,” he explains. “I am very much a morning person, and I enjoy that early morning crowd because I actually have an opportunity to converse, and I love getting to know the customers—so I jumped at the chance.” Kauffman says his bar regulars— and new patrons who stroll through the Shoppes at Wilton Manors in the morning—are a big part of what makes his days consistently fun. “I have a great nucleus of regulars. Someone once asked me, ‘Who goes into a bar at 9 a.m.?’ I responded, “What if you are a night auditor, or work security and you get off at 7 a.m.—you stop and grab a bite to eat, and then it’s Happy Hour. Not everyone works from 9 to 5.” You can catch Tom Kauffman behind the bar at Boom Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. His signature drink
is the “Cocksucker.” (You can giggle.) He says to mix one ounce of Bailey’s® (or other Irish Cream), one ounce of butterscotch schnapps, and a splash of Southern Comfort. Bottoms up (or whatever your pleasure)!H

GLAAD Network Index Strokes Showtime and CW; Slaps History, CBS By PHOEBE MOSES
T
he Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has published its annual Network Responsibility Index, a measure of representation of LGBT characters and issues, and how they are presented in mass media platforms. The 2012 Index is a reflection of the shifting dynamic in television entertainment and issue programming, and how they reflect the modern LGBT—and American—landscape. Among broadcast networks, The CW—a joint venture between CBS and Warner Bros—earned top place, while cable networks HBO, Showtime, TNT, and ABC Family were awarded “good” ratings. Two cable networks, TBS and History (formerly the History
Channel), netted failing marks for their non-satisfactory representation of LGBT people and issues. A closer look at the GLAAD Index: • With 29 percent of its programming hours primetime considered to be LGBT-inclusive, The CW continues as the top gay-friendly (from a content perspective) broadcast network, and takes preeminent place as most racially-diverse (62 percent of impressions made by LGBT persons/ characters of color”. • A 4 percent improvement by ABC and a coeval 5 percent decline at Fox caused the networks to “make the switch” at second and third places in percentage of inclusive hours. • Although NBC had a net gain in LGBT-inclusive hours of 4 percent,
it wasn’t enough to get it out of the closet—or basement, if you prefer, of fourth place. • CBS remains in last place for the fourth year in a row, with just 8 percent of its primetime programming considered to be LGBT-inclusive. Worse, the numbers represent a net DROP of 2 percent since last year, taking it down from a 2011 score of “Adequate” to this year’s rating of “Failing.” • Among cable networks, Showtime (46 percent), ABC Family (34 percent), TNT (34 percent), and HBO (33 percent) received “Good” ratings. • Although the youth cable brand scored an “Excellent” rating just two years ago, at 23 percent MTV
dropped to “Adequate” this year, along with FX (34 percent),TLC (20 percent), and USA (17 percent). • For the fourth year in a row, both TBS (5 percent) and History (3 percent) received an Index rating of “Failing.” Although the 2012 Index acknowledges that transgender people remain underrepresented, there was encouragement on the “T” front. “The appearance of Chaz Bono on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ was a groundbreaking step in transgender representation on television this year,” noted Herndon Graddick, President of GLAAD. “His very candid appearance on the program taught many that transgender Americans deserve respect and acceptance.”H

Gay Couple Sues United/Continental Airlines For Baggage “Sex Toy” Incident By CLIFF DUNN
NORFOLK, VIRGINIA - A Virginia same-sex couple is suing Houston-based United/Continental Airlines for an incident in which baggage handlers removed a sex toy from one of their checked bags, and then smeared lubricant all over it, finally taping it to the bag before placing it upon the baggage claim belt. According to court documents in the case—Bridgeman, et al v. United Continental Holdings, Inc. and Continental Airlines, Inc., which was filed on Friday, August 24—Christopher Bridgeman and Martin Borger claim that after they arrived in Houston on a flight from Costa Rica, they retrieved their checked luggage and “discovered, to their horror, that a private sex toy had been removed from one of their
bags, covered in a greasy foul-smelling substance, and taped prominently to the top of their bag.” The suit continues, “Plaintiffs experienced extreme shock and horror when they observed the abovedescribed bag, and when observing the surprised and/or laughing faces of numerous onlookers in the baggage claim area.” The men say that the baggage handlers—who were employed at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston—were motivated by “the fact that the sex toy was contained in the bag of a male, and because the employee(s) responsible knew that the bag belonged to a male due to the name tag attached to the bag and the male clothing contained in the bag.”
It adds that “these egregious actions were directed towards Plaintiffs because they are homosexual and because they are males.” According to the lawsuit, Bridgeman
and Borger “seek punitive damages for intentional infliction of emotional distress, invasion of privacy and negligence.”H
