The previous week, the Republican National Committee, meeting in Tampa, approved a platform that affirms the rights of states and the federal government not to recognize samesex marriage. The RNC platform also supports a constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman.H

Ann Romney Declines to Answer Questions About Gay Marriage, Birth Control DAVENPORT, IOWA – During an interview last week with a local television station, Ann Romney, the wife of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, declined several times to answer questions about marriage equality, or employer-provided contraception. The candidate’s wife was interviewed by KWQC-TV anchor David Nelson, who asked her, “Here in Iowa, as you know, same-sex marriage is legal. Do you believe a lesbian mother should be allowed to marry her partner?” Replied Romney: “You know, I’m not going to talk about the specific issues.” When she was asked whether employers should be required to provide health insurance that covers birth control, Romney declined to respond. “You know, again, I’m going to talk to you about the economy and about job creation, and about how my husband is the right person for the right time. This is going to be an election that is very important for women, and we are going to make sure that their economic prosperity is more certain under a President Romney.” Her husband, Mitt Romney, publicly opposes gay marriage and civil unions, and supports a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman. Romney has also attacked the Obama administration for requiring most religiouslyaffiliated employers to provide coverage for contraception in their employees’ health coverage.

Tisei Could Be First Openly-Gay Republican Elected to Congress SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS – The hypothetical election of U.S. House candidate Richard Tisei

NATIONAL DESK

would be a collision of “firsts.” Tisei would be the first Massachusetts Republican elected to the U.S. House in 15 years. He would also be the first openly-gay Republican elected to a term in Congress. A family scandal surrounding the incumbent, U.S. Rep. John Tierney, a Democrat, gives Republicans their first solid-shot at the House seat, which represents the state’s 6th congressional district. Tierney’s wife has pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting an illegal gambling operation run by her brothers, one of whom was convicted this summer of racketeering; the other is now a fugitive from justice. Both men claim that Tierney was aware of their illegal activities. Tisei, who has served 26 years in the state legislature, including a stint as Senate minority leader, told NPR, “When Gov. Romney was here, I voted with him half the time, and I voted against him half the time,” adding, “I have no problem working with Nancy Pelosi. Just because she’s in the opposition, I’m not gonna poke her in the eye.” Despite that bipartisan language, U.S. House Speaker John Boehner held a fundraiser for Tisei, and the National Republican Congressional Committee has delivered close to $1 million for a TV ad campaign that targets Tierney.

NFL Player Blasts Anti-Gay Maryland Lawmaker ST PAUL, MINNESOTA – On Friday, Minnesota Viking player Chris Kluwe sent an open letter to a Maryland state lawmaker accusing him of misusing the power of his office for attacking a Baltimore Ravens linebacker who supports gay marriage. Wrote punter Chris Klume to Maryland state delegate Emmett Burns, Jr.: “I find it inconceivable that you are an elected official of Maryland’s state government. Your vitriolic hatred and bigotry make me ashamed and disgusted to think

that you are in any way responsible for shaping policy at any level.” Burns earned Klume’s disdain after the lawmaker sent a letter to Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti, demanding that he discipline linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo for his comments in support of marriage equality. Burns, who opposes same-sex marriage, enjoined Bisciotti to “inhibit such expressions from your employee.” “I can’t even begin to fathom the cognitive dissonance that must be coursing through your rapidly addled mind right now, the mental gymnastics your brain has to tortuously contort itself through to make such a preposterous statement are surely worthy of an Olympic gold medal,” Klume wrote to Burns. “I’ve also been vocal as hell about the issue of gay marriage,” Klume added, “so you can take your ‘I know of no other NFL player who has done what Mr. Ayanbadejo is doing,’ and shove it in your closeminded, totally lacking in empathy pie hole, and choke on it.”

Marriage Equality Battle Lines Drawn in Rhode Island PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND — LGBT rights advocates say that marriage equality is likely to be on the agenda when Ocean State lawmakers convene for the legislative session in January. House Speaker Gordon Fox (D-Providence), who is openly-gay, has promised that if he remains leader of the House, he will call for a vote on gay marriage. Fox says he’ll ‘‘work his backside off ’’ to promote the issue. He faces opposition in the State Senate, including from that chamber’s President, Teresa Paiva Weed. Last year, Rhode Island’s General Assembly approved civil unions for same-sex couples. “We are in a New England state, and you can easily go across the state

line to get married,” said Fox. ‘‘I want to have my marriage in the state of Rhode Island.’’

Vermont, Connecticut, New York Sue Feds Over DOMA MONTPELIER, VERMONT — The state of Vermont has joined Connecticut and New York in asking that the federal law defining marriage as between a man and a woman be ruled unconstitutional. On Friday, Vermont Attorney General William Sorrell said that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) discriminates against same-sex couples, and unfairly denies the, federal benefits. “These married couples— our friends and neighbors in Vermont—have every right to fair and equal treatment by the federal government,” said Sorrell. “Instead, they are denied Social Security benefits, tax exemptions, and health and retirement benefits.” The three states filed their briefs in the New York-based 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, in a case brought by a New York woman who was required to pay $350,000 in estate taxes when her partner died. Last year, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced that the Justice Department would no longer defend DOMA in court, and several federal judges—including a number appointed by Republican presidents—have ruled the law to be unconstitutional. In June, a federal judge in New York ruled DOMA to be unconstitutional because it intrudes upon the states’ business of regulating domestic relations. Currently, same-sex marriage is legal in Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont, and Washington, D.C.H Get Your Business Really Seen!

Pride Center, Women In Network, GLBX Help Raise $36K For Broward “Tools for Schools” POMPANO BEACH - Elected officials, business and community leaders, and school officials celebrated the contribution of more than $36,000 in school supplies for Broward teachers and their students. The donation will help provide enough supplies for one school year for about 90 teachers from the Broward Education Foundation’s Tools for Schools center. Teachers in Broward’s poorest schools are eligible to shop twice a year at the center for a wide range of items, ranging from pencils, paper and glue, to art supplies, tissues and back packs.

More than 50 local businesses displayed contribution bins in their offices for the month of July to collect school supplies. Major sponsors included the Pride Center at Equality Park, Women In Network, and the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce Gay and Lesbian Business Exchange (GLBX), which organized the largest collection drive of all partners in the “Stuff the Bus” event. The sixth largest school district in the nation, Broward County has more than 172 Title 1 schools, with more than 52 percent of the families struggling to equip their children for the new school year. According to the foundation, teachers spend an average $1,000 of their own personal funds to help equip their classrooms. For more information, visit browardedfoundation.net.

Infinity Lounge Announces Grand Opening WILTON MANORS – The owners of the new Infinity Lounge have announced their Grand Opening, which will be held on Saturday, September 15, from 6 to 8 p.m., in its location at 2184 Wilton Drive (in the Gables Wilton Park building). “I’m from a small town in Washington State,” says Ken Hill, owner of Infinity Lounge, “so I was attracted to Wilton Manors for its small town feel with a big city vibe. It was the perfect location for the lounge I have spent ages conceptualizing, where cocktails and conversation mix with casual sophistication.” To officially launch the new venture, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m., with Wilton Manors Vice-Mayor Tom Green and City Commissioners Scott Newton and Julie Carson presiding. DJ Chuck Knowles will provide entertainment, and happy hour pricing will be in place for the event. “I really wanted a lounge that welcomes everyone—men, women, gay or straight, local or visitor to the area—to relax in an environment that’s sexy, cool, and sophisticated,” says Hill. “In appreciation of our clientele, even our well liquors are notable brand names.” “I’m thrilled to welcome Ken Hill and Infinity Lounge to Wilton Manors,” said Krishan Manners, President of the WIlton Manors Development Alliance. “Ken has found a niche in the local market that was under-serviced and created a business around it. That’s exactly the entrepreneurial spirit that makes our city thrive.” Infinity Lounge is open Sunday through Thursday from 3 p.m. to 2a.m., and Friday and Saturday from 3 p.m. to 3 a.m. Happy Hour is from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily, with all drinks at half price.H

Island City Fitness Announces Merger With NYC-Based Steel Gym WILTON MANORS – On October 1, Island City Health and Fitness (ICHF) will merge with New York Citybased Steel Gym, creating a partnership that includes three world class facilities, and plans for a larger network of gyms to come. “By every possible measure, this is a positive step for the club and for the members,” said Reece Darham, ICHF’s managing director and a partner in the new merger, which will introduce the Steel brand to Wilton Manors and Greater Fort Lauderdale. Steel—based in Manhattan’s tony Chelsea area—is owned by fitness authority Ken Hunt, whose purchase last year of Idol’s Gym in Miami brought him into contact with ICHF, and led to the merger discussions. Darham says the benefits for members speak for themselves. “There will be no price change for existing members,” of ICHF, he says. “These are lifetime rates.” In addition, “I’m not leaving,” Darham insists, with a laugh. His insistence aside, he says the rumor mill has been running at full steam since word of the negotiations leaked. “I was sitting in the middle of the Mediterranean,” Darham relates, half in laughter, the other half incredulous. “And I get a message, ‘I heard you sold the gym, and have left the country.’ Mind you, I have taken a summer trip every year since before I can remember, and I’m barely packed for a scheduled holiday when the rumors start flying.” Beginning October 1, ICHF will be a division of Steel Gym. Darham says the goal is to transition to the Steel Gym brand over the next 12

months. “There will be ‘zero’ loss to the members, only gains,” he insists. “We want the members to be comfortable with the transition, and know that their memberships will be responsibly transitioned.” With that in mind, Darham and Hunt have announced that effective October 1, 2012 and continuing through January 31, 2013, ICHF memberships will be honored at all three Steel locations, Manhattan, Miami, and Wilton Manors. Starting February 1, Miami and Wilton Manors members will pay a nominal charge (“Something like $5 a month” according to Darham) to use Steel Gym’s New York facility. “This just reflects the reality of how expensive it is to work out in Manhattan,” says Darham. “It’s around $80 a month for a membership to the New York gym.” Darham, who is also cochair of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Rainbow Business Coalition (RBC) and serves as an envoy for the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA), says that upgrades to ICHF are set to be implemented. These include an additional 10-ton a/c unit in the aerobics studio, renovations to the bathrooms (with touchless soap dispensers and hand dryers among them), new workout equipment, major exterior renovations, a new color scheme (“red, black, silver, and white”), and an increase in both the number of group training sessions and the way the gym approaches personal training. “We’re very excited, what can I say?” Darham offers. “One thing that will never change is our community involvement, and our commitment to keeping our promises.” H

Natural vs. NORMAL SEPTEMBER 12, 2012 • ISSUE 147

CLIFF DUNN, EDITOR

I

“Faith and science have at least one thing in common: Both are lifelong searches for the truth. But while faith is an unshakable belief in the unseen, science is the study of testable, observable phenomena. The two coexist, and may at times complement each other. But neither should be asked to validate the other. Scientists have no more business questioning the existence of God than theologians had telling Galileo the Earth was the center of the universe.” - Bill Allen

always enjoy explaining the difference between what’s “natural” versus what’s “normal.” For something to be considered normal, it just needs the behavioral approval of the thundering herd. What defines the “norm” explains what is normal. (Example: Culturally, it is “normal” for many African-American males to disdain the homosexual lifestyle. This, of course, fails to account for the large number of brothers who are living on the “down-low.”) What’s “natural” is informed by one’s “nature” (duh). This isn’t to say that all things that are natural are necessarily good (Ted Bundy, for instance, found it perfectly natural to kidnap, sexually assault, and murder young women). This is where a strong moral compass (and a liberal application of impulse control) comes in handy, but I suspect that all of us deal with personal demons (or at least imps) as we marry behavior that is socially-acceptable with that which is secretly-desired, and live productively as members of the greater mass of humankind. This isn’t the point I want to make, however. I was secretly pulling for the chop-logic coalition of libertarians, establishment stalwarts, Ron Paul mavericks, and gay conservatives who banded together in Tampa last month in an effort to drag the Grand Old Party of Lincoln and Eisenhower into the 21st Century (and the company of the rest of the civilized world) and modulate the anti-gay flame that has burned so brightly since the late-1980s in the party’s ideological cauldron. (The thinly-disguised veneer of softhomophobia that was ushered in by Pat Robertson lived long past

the political career of his protégé, sometime-hottie Ralph Reed, and of the bullhorn they wielded— the now-discredited Christian Coalition. Clearly, dreams can come true.) Unfortunately, when the dust settled, the Republican National Committee adopted language that calls court decisions supporting marriage equality “an assault on the foundations of our society,” and adds that “we believe that marriage, the union of one man and one woman, must be upheld as the national standard, a goal to stand for, encourage, and promote through laws governing marriage.” Take that, child-corrupters in GOProud and Log Cabin Republicans. This lurch to the extreme would have drawn consternation from even Ronald Reagan. You scoff ? Consider: When “Dutch” accepted his party’s nomination in 1980, the Republican platform acknowledged the national debate over reproductive freedom, introducing its abortion plank by saying that “we recognize differing views on this question among Americans in general—and in our own party.” Consider that conciliatory prose in light of this year’s authoritarian “the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed.” (The 2012 GOP platform also calls for public display of the Ten Commandments.) As a small “d” democrat (and a small “l” libertarian), I believe that religious and socially conservative folks should have a voice in our great democratic republic, and representation in our halls of legislation. I have had many close friends from my childhood to the present who were Jehovah’s

Witnesses, Southern Baptists, Latter-day Saints, Evangelical Christians, and orthodox Jews, and they have each had a way of believing how the world/cosmos/ existence works, as seen through the prism of their individual faiths, as well as a humane way of treating and dealing with those who their beliefs might consider “different.” That’s perfectly well and good. Score one for tolerance. (Or in the words of Tony Soprano, “They don’t want my son with their daughters, and I don’t want their sons with mine.”) Every one is entitled to their own beliefs—but no one is entitled to their own facts (a word that comes from the Latin factum, or “deeds”), and when all is said and done, in a nation of laws, every citizen is entitled to engage in the same “deeds” as every other citizen, including that most desperate deed of all—getting married to the consent adults of their choosing. Gay Republicans are certainly free to vote how they like, selecting the candidates and ideologies that most closely calibrate to their beliefs, values, morals, principles, and ethics. But they must know that they are doing so as secondtier technocrats, who have been granted only the most grudging of nods in their party’s platform. (“We embrace the principle that all Americans should be treated with respect and dignity.”) From my vantage point, that just encourages the bad behavior, perpetuating the “Jim Queer” mindset in many on the far right with the tacit endorsement of those who should instead be calling for the full measure of their civil rights the loudest. A dirty deed, indeed.H

Four States, Four Referendum Views on Gay Marriage By JOE HARRIS In November, voters in four states will be asked to make permanent— more or less—their jurisdictions’ treatment of marriage equality (or reasonable facsimiles thereof ). Ballot initiatives in Maryland and Washington will determine whether marriage equality laws signed this year will stay on the books. In Maine, voters will decide once and for all, they presume, whether to allow gay marriage back into the Pine Tree State (where it was already signed into law—and overturned at the ballot box—in 2009). And in Minnesota, a constitutional amendment would enshrine marriage as the union of a man and a woman.

The Maine Event

AUGUSTA, MAINE - In 2009, state lawmakers enacted marriage equality, but it was overturned in the voting booth. Supporters of ballot Question 1 want to reinstate same-sex marriage. Both they and their opponents criticized the wording of the ballot question (“Do you want to allow same-sex couples to marry?”) as being too simplistic. Although Gov. Paul LePage, a Republican, has been silent about his position on the issue, in May he criticized the teachers’ union for endorsing it, and later vetoed the union’s pay bill. Polls suggest that most voters (58 percent) support the marriage equality referendum.

Freedom to Marry in the Free State?

ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND - Supporters hope to pass an initiative repealing the state’s Civil Marriage Protection Act, which was enacted earlier this year in support of marriage equality. Survey data shows strong support for same-sex marriage in Maryland.

The Veep, the General, and the Gays ST PAUL, MINNESOTA - Although gay marriage isn’t legal there, Republican lawmakers and conservative activists support a constitutional amendment to prohibit it from ever rearing its head in the North Star State. The ballot measure asks, “Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to provide that only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Minnesota?” (Republicans want you to answer, “Yes.”) The question’s opponents include former Vice President Walter Mondale (D-MN), Fortune 500 corporation (and Minnesota-based) General Mills, Thomson Reuters, Target, and U.S. Sen. Al Franken (D-MN).

Ever-Pink in the Evergreen State? OLYMPIA, WASHINGTON- The state’s Referendum 74 would repeal the marriage equality law signed in February by Gov. Christine Gregoire, a Democrat. The referendum question asks voters to approve or reject the law, which “allows same-sex couples to marry, applies marriage laws without regard to gender, and specifies that laws using genderspecific terms like husband and wife include same-sex spouses.” The law also says that “After 2014, existing domestic partnerships are converted to marriages, except for seniors. It preserves the right of clergy or religious organizations to refuse to perform or recognize any marriage or accommodate wedding ceremonies. The bill does not affect licensing of religious organizations providing adoption, foster-care, or child placement.” Major supporters of Washington state marriage equality include Amazon.com, Google, Microsoft, Nike, and Starbucks.H

ust like Betty White in an episode of “Golden Girls” trying to hold her breath in a hospital elevator so she wouldn’t get sick, many of us disdain even the idea of visiting a hospital for fear we might catch something that’s airborne. It makes the fear of getting sick worse for some than the potential cure! Fortunately, times have changed, and hospitals are no longer the breeding ground for illness they once were. They have also changed when it comes to serving the disparate members of the community. One case in point is Imperial Point Medical Center (6401 N Federal Hwy, Fort Lauderdale). Tom Kester, Regional Director of Surgical Services for Imperial Point—part of the Broward Health system—is a true friend to the LGBT community. He, along with Imperial Point’s new CEO, Abigail Fortey, have established meaningful ties to Greater Fort Lauderdale’s LGBT community, recognizing the relationship between community partnership and trust,

and providing health care to that community. “One of the reasons that I joined Imperial Point was that we embrace domestic partnership rights,” notes Kester. “That is huge in the medical field. Of course,” he adds, “all of the Broward Health facilities recognize domestic partnerships.” Kester points to the region’s changing needs in health care. “At one time we had a huge HIV/AIDS department. Now, thanks to medical treatment advances, we don’t see that need as it was 25 years ago,” he explains. “At that time, Father William Collins of The Poverello Center served as chaplain. He did so much good work, and he still does,” Kester adds, flashing a smile. He goes over some of the essential services Imperial Point provides. “Women have so many services offered to them, such as mammograms and other health screenings.” And then there’s “the Man Van.” “That is not the official name of the project,” Kester explains, laughing. “The

idea behind it is that men have health issues, and this van will operate like some of the HIV screening vans do. We are eventually looking at the following tests to be done on site, or we will refer the patient to the proper specialist for further testing: Gastrointestinal/ colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy, urology and prostate exams, cardiac screening, eye exams, diabetes screening, weight control, skin health, low testosterone, erectile dysfunction, and basic health education—and that’s just scratching the surface,” he adds. Imperial Point is about to celebrate 40 years of providing uninterrupted service. The medical center plans to mark the occasion on Saturday, October 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with something for everyone including screenings for blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, and more. The event will also feature free therapeutic chair massages, a Halloween-themed corner and bounce house for kids, caricature artist and face painting, food,

refreshments, all sorts of prizes and giveaways, live entertainment, and the blood bank bus. For more information, call (954) 759-7400, or visit browardhealth. org/40years.H

CHEATING

SPELLS TROUBLE... and INJURIES! By TOM BONANTI

E

veryone knows that cheating is wrong. Yet it’s exhilarating at times to see just how much you can get away with. If you fudge on your taxes, you may end up with more money in your pocket, but you could also wind up in prison. Two-timing on your boyfriend may be tempting, but it can also lead to a variety of problems that even penicillin won’t cure. Cheating on your form in the gym in an attempt to lift heavier weight or squeeze out a few more reps to impress onlookers can lead to stalled gains and debilitating injuries. In order to get stellar results in the gym you need to lift progressively heavier weights, but more importantly, you need to learn and maintain good form. To help you have successful workouts and prevent you from getting injured, allow me to identify several form abuses, as well as suggestions for fixing them.

Bench presses are crucial for developing the size and strength of your chest, but when they are not done according to proper form they can lead to all sorts of injuries. Often, I see guys arching their backs so that a small log can actually fit between your back and the bench. This will lead to low back injuries in a hurry. Correct this by keeping your back totally against the bench so that not even a piece of paper can be slipped beneath you. Wide-grip lat pull-downs are a fundamental part of every back routine. I often see guys rushing through this exercise leaning forward, pulling the bar down behind the neck. Correct this by pulling the bar down in front of you to your chin with your back slightly arched, and your chest puffed out. After pulling the bar down, hold it steady for two seconds, then take one-totwo seconds to let it rise back up to starting position. A special note here: Wide-grip

lat pull-downs and shoulder barbell and dumbbell presses should never be performed behind the neck, since this can lead to rotator cuff damage. Biceps curls with barbells, E-Z curl bars, and dumbbells are essential for adding mass to arms, and chiseling those peaks in your biceps. But as you lift, focus on contracting biceps and not arching your back. Swinging, jerking and arching the back as you curl does not build your arms, it causes injuries. Instead, keep your body vertical. If you can’t, then use a lighter weight. Practice curling while keeping your back against a wall, or while seated on a bench. Squats are perhaps the most effective weight training exercise you can do in the gym. They not only work quads, hamstrings and glutes better than any other exercise, but there is practically no muscle group, from abs to triceps, that don’t benefit from

squatting. I am often horrified when I see guys leaning forward, knees over their toes and spines flexed. When you squat, keep your back straight, your head up and your toes pointed outward. Drop your butt down and keep the backs of your upper legs slightly less than parallel to the floor. Squat down slowly and become more explosive as you come up, using your glutes, hams and quads to push you up. You have a lifetime to lift all the weight in the gym, but if you cheat on your form and hurt yourself, you’re liable to end up with injuries that will take you out of circulation, maybe for good! PARIS—PART II After Midnight in the City of Lights By ROBERT ELIAS DEATON

R

omance is in the air in Paris—from the architecture to the food to the sexy, exciting people that strut down the rues as if on the catwalk of life. Discovering the real Gay Paris is an exciting event that will leave you charged, reenergized and smiling earto-ear. Your adventure begins and ends at L’Open Café (17 Rue des Archives), a bar that doubles

as an eatery, starting at 11:30 in the morning. This is the place to people-watch early in the day, and late at night. It’s at the intersection of Rue des Archives and Rue Sainte-Croix de la Bretonnerie, in the heart of the gayborhood, Le Marais. The closest Metro to this point is the Hôtel de Ville station. Enjoy some food, the passing view, and a few drinks, and get set to bar crawl the entire night away. The nearest bar to L’Open Café is Le Cox (15 Rue des Archives). This small and smelly beer dive has the distinction of having the longest Happy Hour in the area (from 6-9 p.m.). Liquor up on the cheap and then keep on moving. Should you need a full-course dinner during your pub crawl, do not hesitate to try the relatively new Café Voulez-Vous (18 Rue du Temple). The restaurant is run by the legendary Thibault Jardon, who ran the Les Bains Douches before it shut down, and was the artistic director of the iconic Queen nightclub on the Champs Elysée (now a straight club.) One of our favorite hangouts in the neighborhood has long been the Banana Café (13 Rue de la Ferronnerie). Here you’ll find

The bar has a nice open air patio area that is rarely used, but would be nice if it was. University Club 18 E University Ave., Gainesville, FL This is a fairly average small college town gay bar. It is usually busy and crowded on Thursday nights.

SPOTLIGHT

THE CUBBY HOLE: A Butch Little Local Landmark By DALE MADISON

O

nce upon a time, there was a legendary little watering hole near Sears Town called Lester’s Bar (it had first been called SyLa’s, after the original owners, but it underwent a name change in 1949). Around 1990, the landmark lounge was purchased by a customer, John Hitchcock (who was a big fan of the joint’s freshly-made hamburgers). Re-christening it the Cubby Hole, Hitchcock was the steward of the heritage establishment for 15 years before deciding to put it on the market. Enter Teri Galardi and Gary Edmiston. “We looked at large clubs in Wilton Manors, Fort Lauderdale, and Oakland Park,” recalls Edmiston. “We heard about Cubby Hole, so we stopped in to have a drink and check the place out. We really liked it, and so we put the wheels in motion, and next thing you know Teri bought the place.”

There was a lot to attract Galardi and Edmiston to the location. “We really liked the ‘friendly, local watering hole.’ We wanted the bar to be laid back, comfortable feel,” explains Edmiston. He acknowledges there were concerns when they first over. “Local drug dealers were hanging out in the back alley. Teri started going to city council meetings, and we spoke to the local police about more patrols. We also installed more security cameras.” Eventually, the bad element got the message that they weren’t welcome. Despite those changes for the better, some things have stayed exactly same— including the bar’s reputation for great food (including the burgers that helped “give birth” to it). “Our burger is 1/3-pound of fresh ground sirloin,” Edmiston justifiably brags. “I personally go out and purchase the sirloin every day. Every Friday is hot dog day, so many times I will make a Sloppy Joe sauce to

go on the dogs. We really try to show our customers that they are number one to us,” he adds. “We also have the longest happy hour in town. Seven days a week and customers can use their [free drink] chips anytime. Our philosophy is you should be able to use that chip when you want to use it,” says Edmiston. Edmiston’s emphasis on service and quality date back to his days in uniform, military and culinary. “In 1975, I left the United States Air Force and joined Big Boy Restaurants. I was a manager for years,” he remembers. “I then went to work for a private club in Las Vegas, and then became Assistant Executive Chef at Vegas World Casino.” In Las Vegas, Edmiston began his professional association with Galardi. “I went to work for Teri at the Back Door Club, which was one of the largest gay clubs in Vegas. It was typical for us to have 500 patrons on any given night.

Then Teri and I found Cubby Hole, and this has been home for me for the past three years,” says Edmiston. “I’ve had one day off in that time,” he adds with a smile, “but this has been a labor of love, so it makes it worthwhile.” The Cubby Hole Bar is located at 823 North Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale. In the HEAT of the Night: Hard Rock-style

(and get your calendar signed). Over past two decades, the calendar has raised more than $240,000 for local charities.

The highlight of the 2013 South Florida Firefighter’s Calendar debut Aug. 20 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino had to be the moment when the Sexy First Responders lost their constraining outerwear to reveal their hard pecs, ripped abs, and sexy “stud-muffins” with a catwalk prowl for screaming fans. The calendar’s 20th anniversary edition features South Florida’s hottest heroes, who came together to support some of the area’s charities, including Safe Haven For Newborns, Here’s Help, and the Friends Forever Humane Society. You can purchase the calendar by visiting firefighterscalendar.com/cart2/ products.php?catid=1, or drop by one of the numerous scheduled events and meet the Firehouse Hotties in person

I Guess It Depends on WHAT He’s Smoking “Down Under” The leader of Australia’s Christian Lobby (ACL) said last week that smoking is healthier than same-sex marriage. During a debate at the University of Tasmania, Jim Wallace claimed that health statistics among gays are worse than those for smokers. “I think we’re going to owe smokers a big apology when the homosexual community’s own statistics for its health - which it presents when it wants more money for health - are that is has higher rates of drug-taking, of suicide, it has the life of a male reduced by up to 20 years,” Wallace said, adding that “the life of smokers

is reduced by something like seven to 10 years, and yet we tell all our kids at school they shouldn’t smoke.” Sounds like he thinks kids should trade in one kind of “fag”—cigarettes—for another.

Stevie Wonder Backpedals Over Frank Ocean Comments Over the Labor Day weekend, Stevie Wonder issued a statement that clarified his recent remarks about R&B singer Frank Ocean’s sexuality. In an interview last week with the Guardian, Wonder questioned Ocean’s coming out in July via a Tumblr post in July (just prior to the release of his debut album, “Agent Orange”). “I think honestly, some people who think they’re gay, they’re confused,” Wonder told the UK publication. “People can misconstrue closeness for love. People can feel connected, they bond.” On Sunday, Wonder told MTV, “I’m

sorry that my words about anyone feeling confused about their love were misunderstood. No one has been a greater advocate for the power of love in this world than I, both in my life and in my music. “Clearly, love is love, between a man and a woman, a woman and a man, a woman and a woman and a man and a man. What I’m not confused about is the world needing much more love, no hate, no prejudice, no bigotry and more unity, peace and understanding. Period.” We feel you, Stevie.

Nicki Minaj Goes Back in the Closet Rolling Stone reports that claims by rapper Nicki Minaj (early in her career) that she was bisexual were made just for the attention. “I think girls are sexy,” La Minaj cutely offered. “But I’m not going to lie and say that I date girls.” Mmm-hmmmmm.H

A “NOSE” FOR WINE:

Naked Grape Celebrates Anniversary By DALE MADISON

W

hen Realtor Caleb Ben-Avram and school teacher Tim Slivinski learned that a small wine store in the business district of Wilton Manors was on the market, they decided to investigate. “We both always loved exploring wine stores, whether locally or when we traveled,” says BenAvram. “At the time, The Naked Grape only sold wine by the bottle, and did not have ‘by the glass’ sales. We decided that if we were to purchase the business, we would change the format to a wine bar,” adds Slivinski. “It’s hard to believe,” recalls BenAvram of that day in 2007. The partners knew that success would bring changes. “We used to listen to people who would stop in for a glass of wine. We’d hear, ‘We’re going to grab a bite to eat and we’ll be back.’ Of course, most times they never did come back after dinner,” Slivinski recalls. That oft-repeated

scenario motivated the duo to find a location where they could offer food service to their patrons. That brought them—and their successful operation— up the Drive a few hundred feet, to 2163 Wilton Drive, next to Karl Grace Insurance (and the old offices of Guy Magazine). It was a wise decision. “We consistently get four-and-a-half [out of a maximum of five] stars on Yelp.com,” notes Ben-Avram. “Our food is always fresh. I go to green markets throughout the area. I refuse to use anything that is prepackaged. That’s one of the things that set us apart,” he adds. Slivinski says that they are regularly fine-tuning The Naked Grape to better serve their regulars and new patrons. “We have reduced the amount of bottles from our retail area. We do sell lots of bottles near the holidays, and of course for dinner parties as hostess gifts, but we are really concentrating on our food. Of their addition of an alfresco outdoor

dining and conversation area, he adds, “People enjoy being able to sit outside with a book and sip their wine or one of our gourmet beers.” The oenophiles (look it up) have lots to offer wine-lovers who can’t get enough of the juice of the grape. “In addition to our Tuesday and Wednesday half price bottles for on-premise consumption, we are offering ‘Pairings’ on Thursday night: Three food items and three wines for one price. Sometimes we will pair desserts with wine, and other times it may be cheeses,” Slivinski explains. “We always have one of the wine reps at these tastings to answer questions. We call it ‘Wine with No Pretense.’” As for the rest of the year, “Every year around Thanksgiving we have a Holiday Tasting. This year the date is November11, from 3 to 5 p.m.,” notes Ben-Avram. “It’s always well-attended and a great time. I may even bake one of my blue cheese cheesecakes,” he

adds—teasing palates and threatening waistlines across the Island City. The same as it ever was. For more anniversary specials, visit nakedgrapewinebar.com, and tell Caleb and Tim you read about them in Agenda. Cheers!H

BURGERFi

Fast Food and Fine Dining By RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN

B

urgerFi is so proud of its logo that it hot-brands the thing on top of every one of its buns. It’s a clever concept, and one that ensures you’ll remember that this is no ordinary fast-food burger chain. The place is the brainchild of John Rosatti, the owner of the huge Plaza Auto Mall as well as several luxury yachts, including the 162-foot Remember When. Legend has it that setting foot on the yacht is akin to visiting Buckingham Palace. He also owns his own Gulfstream jet, so money is not the issue here. Health, on the other hand, is. Rosatti recently lost 50 pounds and began BurgerFi as a fast-food fine dining experience for those of us who need to watch our nickels, Every BurgerFi bun comes and our branded (literally) with the calories. BurgerFi logo

The end result is a rather fresh and lively experience in fresh-cooked cuisine, heavy on Angus Beef. The standard BurgerFi Burger at $5.47 is a double-pattied affair with lettuce, tomato and secret sauce on the aforementioned branded bun. Flavorful, filling, and fun particularly when you add any of the free extras (mayonnaise, relish, white onions, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, grilled onions, ketchup, mustard, jalapeños, A-1 Sauce, and barbeque sauce). For an extra $1, you can select from Blue Cheese, American Cheese, Swiss Cheese, White Cheddar Cheese, a Fried Egg, Cherry Peppers, Salt & Vinegar Potato Chips, Grilled Mushrooms, a giant Onion Ring, Chili, Peter Luger Steak Sauce, or Heinz Organic Ketchup. Now that’s what we call a burger. For $6.77, the non-meat-eaters among us can get the VegeFi Burger, which is a doggone great imitation of substantial goodness. It’s a crisp quinoa burger (which tastes a lot better than it sounds) with white cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, and secret sauce on a wholewheat bun. We had it served with a side of

Fresh Cut Fries ($2.77), which are cooked any way you like them. We selected well done, and got extra crispy delicious potatoes that somehow disappeared off the plate without chewing or swallowing—they were that good. We were less thrilled with the hot dog selection, since the sampled Chicken Apple Dog ($4.27) didn’t have the familiar pop when your teeth pierced the casing, and came with a sauce that tasted like Cheez Whiz to us. Even so, it was a filing serving, accompanied by some superb Onion Rings ($3.77). For dessert, BurgerFi serves a sinful Frozen Custard in cups and cones ($3.97, $4.97, $5.97—one, two or three scoops), made with cream from nearby farms. Get it with BurgerFi Mix-in toppings for $5.57 under the Concrete menu. They’ve got a Key Lime Pie, Beach Blast (chocolate custard, peanut butter, chocolate chips and brownie chunks), and Fort Lauderdale Surfer (caramel, mango and coconut)—all $5.57, and tasty, too. BurgerFi serves an array of Craft Beers, including our favorite Magic Hat #9 and Orange Blossom Pilsner, among others. They

also serve up by-the-glass Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Grigio, as well as a new taste to us—the Rex Goliath Merlot. It lingered with the taste of plums, cherries and wild red berries that was an excellent accessory to the BurgerFi staples. By asking for any item Green Style, they’ll skip the branded bun and wrap it in lettuce. And if you really can’t make up your mind, ask for a 1/2 Stack Burger, which isn’t on the menu, but will get you an Angus Beef patty topped with American cheese, plus a quinoa patty with white cheddar cheese. Enjoy, and tell them Agenda sent you.H

Crème Brûlée This Week’s Delicious Recipe By JEAN DOHERTY Crème brûlée, French for “burnt cream,” (in Spanish, “crema catalane,” and in English “Trinity cream”) is a dessert consisting of a rich custard base, topped with a layer of hard caramel. Most people assume that crème brûlée is a French dish, since the name is French. Chances are, crème brûlée is another version of a custard recipe that was passed around during the Middle Ages. It’s almost impossible to trace its exact roots to a specific origin, so the “Battle of the Brûlée” still goes on between French, English, and Spanish adherents. The only hard part about making this recipe is that it requires you to caramelize the sugar topping just before serving. (I do this directly at your table at Le Patio.) The aim is to get a “hard” finish without warming the cream underneath, and this can be difficult without the right tool. I suggest you splurge on a blow torch. (I love using the blow torch: I actually think I was a plumber in another life!) It’s well worth it, because crème brûlée is so easy and delicious, you’re going to want to make it again and again

the eggs: Mix the egg yolks and sugar in a large bowl, beating them like mad until the mixture becomes a “whitish,” light yellow color. Add the boiling vanilla cream, mixing SLOWLY, making sure that the mixture does not become too bubbly. Delicately pour this new mixture into small individual porcelain or terracotta molds. (You should make from six to eight, depending on the size of your dishes) Cook for 1 hour and 15 min; the crème should come out wobbly. Cool well. Before serving, cover with brown sugar, get the blow torch out, and start caramelizing it. C’mon baby light my fire: You are the chef!H

Ingredients: • • • • •

10 egg yolks 8 oz. of sugar 1 liter of heavy cream 1 vanilla pod Brown sugar (for “finish”)

Preheat the oven at 205°. Open the vanilla pod, remove the grains out, and put them in the cream. Place on the stovetop, and start heating slowly. “Whiten”

Although born in Dublin, Ireland, chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

Love Jones

Pretend By JUSTIN JONES

T

his bathroom was spotless only moments ago: My boyfriend’s model sailboat carefully polished, every water stain on my mirror gone, and my counter empty. But now it’s a different scene: The countertop has a quarter-inch of hairspray covering it, hair wax begins to dry around the drain in the sink, and the place is littered with a hairbrush, a flat iron, and a halfempty, uncapped bottle of cologne. My closet will soon be in a similar state, consisting of a colossal pile of outfits that I’ll try on and reject. What a mess! How quickly does getting ready for a night out reverse the hard work I put into cleaning in the first place. And what fun it will be to clean it again tomorrow. Hungover. The funny thing about it, after all this trouble—after spending hundreds on a new outfit, agonizing over whether or not to even wear it, spending even more on booze for a pre-party, painstakingly going through every contact in my phone to make sure all the right people were

invited—I look at myself in the mirror and realize: I don’t even want to go out. When we were younger, we co-signed a metaphorical pledge with ourselves: We would spend every night out on the town, taking it by storm, whisking it away to wherever we wanted it to go. We ignored what we did to our bodies, we paid no mind to how ridiculous we sounded to our mature friends, and we heeded not the advice of our elders. We soaked ourselves in cologne, spent hours doing our hair, and spent money we didn’t have on clothes. We did so with integrity and conviction. THIS is who we are, we thought. Of course, when we got a little older— when our bodies took more time to recover, when we found “big boy” jobs and started caring about our friends more than ourselves—we settled down a bit. We laughed at our former crazy ways, professed a “new me”—a cliché to convey our newfound maturity—and then took it upon ourselves to find a new

path, one that led toward settling down with the Love of our Life (he’d come one day), and the family we’d share. My “new me” was born several years ago. I was finishing my bachelor’s degree, I had found the love of my life, and before long I’d be forever in his arms. “Going out” wouldn’t do anymore. Inevitably, I occasionally relapsed into that former behavior, but not like it was before—the “old me” was a strange, amusing caricature of the new. Or at least that’s what I thought. Now here I am, staring at the mess I’ve made in my bathroom. Twenty-six years

old. I’m dating the man of my dreams. I have a wonderful job. I host dinner parties. I’m a real adult! Right? Wrong. There’s still that teenage-era mess in my bathroom and in my closet. Who did this? Was there ever actually a “new me?” I reflect the next day while I’m folding the clothes in my closet, and I affirm my suspicions: There never was a “new me,” after all. I just matured enough to appreciate what my teenage self had missed out on, the people who make my life important. I guess we never really grow up; we just get better at pretending.H
