Fort Lauderdale beat out Philadelphia, Chicago and New York for the right to hold the convention in this area this year. “I want to welcome all the IGLTA delegates to South Florida and Wilton Manors and we’re thrilled to have them here,” said Gary Resnick, Mayor of Wilton Manors. “It’s a very important convention for our community and it should do wonders for our local economy. The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) voted on Tuesday to amend the church's constitution to allow openly gay people in same-sex relationships to be ordained in the church as ministers, elders, deacons, and church officers, ending 33 years of debate about the issue and reversing a 2009 vote after 19 of the church's 173 voting members, known as presbyteries, switched their votes. The move comes as recent polls suggest 56 percent of American voters now support same-sex marriage equality and amidst widespread and increasing acceptance of homosexuality. According to PCUSA.org, the church includes more than 11.000 congregations, 2.3 million
members in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. A statement on from the PCUSA.org regarding the amendment stated: A majority of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)’s 173 presbyteries have ratified an amendment to the church’s constitution that removes a provision flatly prohibiting the ordination of sexually active unmarried Presbyterians as church officers. Palm Beach County Gives Thumbs Up to Gay Employees WEST PALM BEACH, FL – The Palm Beach County Commission has agreed to offer same sex-couples the same medical leave to care for their domestic partners that the federal government gives married workers. The unmarried domestic partners may take up to 12 weeks a year of unpaid leave to care for their partner with a guarantee that they will be able to return to their jobs. Married county employees already enjoy these rights. Since 2007, Palm Beach County’s Human Rights Council has pushed to make this addition to county laws. Broward County already allows medical leave for domestic partners, as does the City of West Palm Beach. Palm Beach County has 53 employees who have registered as domestic partners. H

Broward House Prepares to Open More Housing FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – In July, Broward House plans to open its twelfth facility. After six months and over $200,000 of renovations, the newest facility will be open in Sailboat Bend. The project has 2 2-bedroom units and 7 1-bedroom units that will house individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS. These units are made affordable through a subsidy from HOPWA (Housing Opportunities for Persons With AIDS/HIV). The new housing facility was made possible through a recent grant from Doug Greene of the Green Family Foundation, which helps with the landscaping of the property. Broward House is looking for other individuals, corporations and foundations to help the project come to fruition. They are also looking for help with painting the outside of the building and make other minor touches throughout the property. One of the units has already been adopted by the Samuel and Hannah Holzman Trust. A plaque outside will be hung recognizing and thanking them for their generosity. H

Gay Deportation Halted NEWARK, NJ – The deportation of a Venezuelan dancer back to Caracas has been put on hold. The hold on the deportation took place one day after U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder set aside a deportation ruling on similar case. Henry Velandia, 27, was legally married to Josh Vandiver, 29, a U.S. citizen, in Connecticut last year where same-sex marriage is legal. The couple currently lives in New Jersey. Last week, an immigration judge in Newark adjourned the case until December citing Holder’s decision a day earlier, awaiting an outcome in that case. H
US Navy Revokes Move to Allow Same Sex Marriage on Bases WASHINGTON, D.C. – The US Navy has revoked its guidance allowing chaplains to conduct same-sex marriages in some states following outrage from Republican lawmakers and social conservatives. The suspension came late Tuesday after opponents of same-sex military marriages claimed the move would violate a law prohibiting federal recognition of gay marriage. A copy of a memo revoking the guidance was obtained Wednesday by FOX News Channel. "My memorandum of 13 April 2011 is hereby suspended until further notice pending additional legal and policy review and inter-Departmental coordination," the memo, issued by the Chief of Chaplains Rear Admiral Mark L. Tidd, read. Despite the revocation, military officials said the US Defense Department might still permit gay troops to marry in military chapels in states that recognize homosexual marriages after US President Barack Obama lifts a ban on openly-gay service members known as "don't ask, don't tell," the Washington Post reported. As part of its DADT Repeal Training, the Navy had decided that facilities on U.S. Naval Bases may be used for samesex marriages and that Naval Chaplains will be permitted, though not required, to perform such ceremonies. The ruling only applied to Naval bases located in states where same-sex marriage is permitted by law. Citing “additional legal review” by Navy attorneys, the Chief of Navy Chaplains, Admiral Michael Tidd originally said the Navy “has concluded that, generally speaking, base facility use is sexual orientation neutral.” The April 13 memo signed by Tidd said navy chaplains would have the option to officiate at a same-sex union if it agreed with their religious beliefs and the laws of the state. But in the new memo dated May 10, Tidd reversed course and suspended his guidance. Training programs about the end of "don't ask, don't tell" for US Navy chaplains and sailors would continue as scheduled, a navy spokeswoman said.

N.Y. Gov Goes Robo for Marriage Equality
Museum Marks 30th Anniversary of HIV/AIDS
ALBANY, NY – New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has recorded a robo-call supporting marriage equality in the state. In the call, the governor says: “Hello, I’m Governor Andrew Cuomo. There is a pressing issue of basic fairness and civil rights in New York … and that is marriage equality. Without the ability to marry, same-sex couples and their families are denied over one thousand federal and state rights, such as visiting a spouse in a hospital in the event of illness. It makes same-sex couples second-tier citizens who receive less protection and have fewer rights than others. This is not a Democratic or Republican issue. It is a question of New York going forward or backward. It’s hard to imagine today, but at one time in this country it was illegal for blacks and whites to marry each other. We have come a long way and now it is time to go further — to achieve marriage equality for all New Yorkers. I urge you to call your State legislators and ask them to vote for equality – marriage equality – for all New Yorkers. Thank you.” The robo-call is being paid for by the state’s Democratic State Committee.H
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History will mark the 30th anniversary of the emergence of what became known as the HIV and AIDS epidemic with a three-part display and website beginning June 3. “HIV and AIDS Thirty Years Ago” will look at the public health, scientific and political responses in the early phase (1981-87) of the global pandemic. This showcase will be located in the museum’s “Science in American Life” exhibition, which focuses on the connections among science, culture and society in American history. The display will feature photographs, magazine covers and other graphics plus equipment that Dr. Jay Levy used to isolate the virus in his lab at the University of California, San Francisco, a copy of the Surgeon General’s 1986 report presenting the government’s position, samples of the drugs AZT and Retrovir and public health information pamphlets from AIDS service organizations. In “Archiving the History of an Epidemic: HIV and AIDS, 1985-2009,” the museum’s Archives Center will show how individuals and society were affected by the epidemic through a selection of archival materials from its collections, including posters for the 1993 movie Philadelphia with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington and the 1989 film Longtime Companion, brochures, photographs and other popular culture materials and quotes from oral histories of people affected by the epidemic. Brazil Approves Civil Unions for Same-Sex Couples SAO PAULO, BRAZIL – Last week, the Brazilian Supreme Court ruled that civil unions between same-sex couples must be allowed. The justices voted 10-0 saying they believe that gay couples deserve the same rights and privileges as their heterosexual counterparts when it comes to alimony, death benefits, inheritances and other issues. The ruling does not permit a full gay marriage. In Latin America, only Argentina and Mexico City permit samesex marriage. Same-sex unions are legal in Uruguay and some states within

Mexico outside of Mexico City, and Columbia grants same-sex couples inheritance rights. Brazil is a predominantly a Roman Catholic county. H
President Clinton Endorses Marriage Equality WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Human Rights Campaign has released a statement from former President Bill Clinton endorsing marriage equality legislation for same-sex couples in the State of New York. The statement from the former president was issued to the New York State lawmakers as they returned to session last week. Supporters of marriage equality are pushing for a vote during this legislative session which ends in June. Clinton’s statement read: “Our nation's permanent mission is to form a ‘more perfect union’ - deepening the meaning of freedom, broadening the reach of opportunity, strengthening the bonds of community. That mission has inspired and empowered us to extend rights to people previously denied them. Every time we have done that, it has strengthened our nation. Now we should do it again, in New York, with marriage equality. For more than a century, our Statue of Liberty has welcomed all kinds of people from all over the world yearning to be free. In the 21st century, I believe New York's welcome must include marriage equality.” Clinton’s endorsement comes as a record 58 percent of New Yorkers support committed gay and lesbian couples getting married. This unprecedented level of support comes from every region of the state, every age group and is clearly bipartisan. Prominent New York business leaders recently wrote a letter making the case that marriage equality is good for business. H
Massachusetts Gets Gay Supreme Court Justice BOSTON, MA – Barbara A. Lenk has become the first openly gay justice on the Massachusetts Supreme Court. Previously, Lenk had been sitting on the state’s appeals court. The Governor’s Council confirmed Lenk on a 5-3 vote. She is Governor Deval Patrick’s fourth appointment to the seven-member court which issued the landmark 2003 ruling that made Massachusetts the first state to legalize same-sex marriage.H
Michigan May Reduce Funding from Pro-Gay Universities LANSING, MI – The Michigan State House of Representatives has voted to cut funding by 5% to the state’s colleges and universities which offers same-sex benefits to partnered faculty and staff members. In 2008, Michigan banned same-sex marriage and placed restrictions against same-sex unions. The bill will now head to a conference committee and be combined into a final education bill.H

The unofficial tally now stands at 8762, with 24 presbyteries still to vote. The change takes effect July 10 ― one year from the adjournment of the 219th Assembly. The vote will cause the replacement of the current G-6.0106b in The Book of Order with new language. That provision, which was placed in the constitution following the 1996 Assembly, requires of church officers “fidelity within the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman or chastity in singleness.” As a result of the vote, ordaining bodies ― local church sessions for elders and deacons and presbyteries for ministers ― will have more flexibility in determining individual candidates’ fitness for ordained office in the denomination. “Clearly what has changed is that persons in a same-gender relationship can be considered for ordination,” General Assembly Stated Clerk Gradye Parsons told the Presbyterian News Service. “The gist of our ordination standards is that officers submit to the Lordship of Jesus Christ and ordaining bodies (presbyteries for ministers and sessions for elders and deacons) have the responsibility to examine each candidate individually to ensure that all candidates do so with no blanket judgments.”The new revised G-6.0106b states: “Standards for ordained service reflect the church’s desire to submit joyfully to the Lordship of Jesus Christ in all aspects of life. The governing body responsible for ordination and/or installation shall examine each candidate’s calling, gifts, preparation and suitability for the responsibilities of office. The examination shall include, but not be limited to, a determination of the candidate’s ability and commitment to fulfil all the requirements as expressed in the constitutional questions for ordination and installation. Governing bodies shall be guided by Scripture and the confessions in applying standards to individual candidates.” The Statement from the PCUSA, went on to say that “some will rejoice while others will weep” at the voting results. “However, as Presbyterians, we believe that the only way we will find God’s will for the church is by seeking it together ― worshiping, praying, thinking, and serving alongside one another,” the four leaders wrote. “We are neighbors and colleagues, friends and family. Most importantly, we are all children of God, saved and taught by Jesus Christ, and filled with the Holy Spirit.” They concluded by saying that the General Assembly Mission Council (GAMC) World Mission staff “continue to be in honest conversation with our partners about the proposed change,” particularly in countries where church leaders have expressed the most concern.H

feel happy and welcome.” Richard Gray, of the Royal Palms Resort, approached Nicki Grossman, President and CEO of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau, in 2009. (Gray also sits on the CVB.) The convention was previously held in Fort Lauderdale in 2001 and Gray felt that much has changed since then. Grossman and then Broward County Commissioner Ken Keechl went to the IGTLA board meeting in Dallas to make their presentation. Fort Lauderdale won the bid. “I think it’s extremely important to have the convention here,” said Gray. “It showcases the destination internationally. This year, IGTLA has representation from about 35 countries and I think that international representation is very important. It’s also important that you are getting the ‘Who’s-Who’ of gay and lesbian travel to attend the IGTLA convention.” The business owners are also thrilled to have the convention in Fort Lauderdale this year. “I think it’s a positive for Fort Lauderdale, as well as Wilton Manors,” said Roger Handevidt, owner of Orton Terrace guest house on Fort Lauderdale beach. “The travel agents and tour operators that are coming are going to see the number one gay and lesbian vacation destination in all of North America. When you talk to travel agents and you talk to travel writers, they will tell you they believe this is the number one desti-
news nation in all of North America. It’s a positive thing for all of us.” “I think that it is paramount that Wilton Manors and Fort Lauderdale be recognized around the world as one of the leading cities when it comes to a united gay and lesbian community that shows compassion and welcomes every international body to enjoy that special gift that we here enjoy on a dayto-day basis,” said Jackson Padgett, who, along with his partner, Mark Negrette, own Georgie’s Alibi and Bill’s on Wilton Drive. “We have wonderful community, restaurants and bars; we have wonderful beaches and culture and everything they can get in any larger metropolitan city and I think it’s wonderful that we have now been recognized on an international level by bringing the convention to this town.” Padgett and Negrette sponsored the Kristine W. concert. She will be performing for the delegates and area residents this Friday evening, May 13th, at Hagen Park in Wilton Manors. Earlier in the day, Hagen Park will host a trade show
for the delegates and locals featuring tour operators, airlines, hotels and other facets of the travel and tourism industry. Much of the other events are being sponsored by the CVB. The Rainbow Business Coalition (RBC), a group of local gay-owned businesses, has volunteered their time, businesses and staff to work alongside the IGLTA with tasks such as registration, organizing and hosting parties for the delegates. Tour operators and travel agents have been shown around the city and they also have time on their own so they can do their own exploring of the area. “I believe they are really working toward making things proper. These people come because they want to learn, not that they want to party. They are more interested in business itself,” said Handevidt. Of course, each mayor is particularly proud of their own city. “Everybody should feel welcome to the City of Fort Lauderdale,” said Seiler. “Every group is appreciated in the City

of Fort Lauderdale. We are a touristbased town, we have a very successful tourist-based system and I, for one, am very grateful that an organization such as this desired to come to Fort Lauderdale.” “Wilton Manors offers everything for the LGBT community: Shops and restaurants, recreational amenities, nightlife, close proximity to the beaches and a lot of cultural events,” said Resnick. “It’s really the perfect spot for any LGBT person looking for a vacation destination. In Wilton Manors, we are a very open and accepting society where no one thinks twice about two men or two women walking hand-in-hand down the street. Wilton Manors is a place where LGBT people can be themselves, enjoy themselves and feel comfortable doing so.” All three mayors thanked the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau for assisting in luring the IGLTA convention to the area. But have the delegates been impressed with the Greater Fort Lauderdale area thus far? “From what I’ve seen so far, people are impressed,” said Gray. “I think people are always surprised at Fort Lauderdale and that it’s not [as] crazy as Miami. They are surprised that the ocean and beach are so close to the road. Everyone I’ve been showing around has just loved it and is so surprised on how gay Fort Lauderdale really is. I think that’s always one of the biggest surprises.”H

STIGMA, FEAR and the Cost of HIV Anthony Johnson is a 16 year survivor of HIV and organizer of the Gay/Bi HIV Social Group, BOLT. He has posted numerous letters to Facebook warning of the potential repetition of history with the horrors when HIV first reared its ugly head 30 years ago. I am angered, afraid and dismayed at the recent attacks on individuals who are HIV positive in the state of Florida and the country as a whole. I am not talking about physical attacks, but we ARE taking a beating. Because of governmental agency mismanagement of appropriated monies and a new governor who thinks that AIDS is a four letter word that must not be spoken – that should be hushed – the HIV positive community is suffering. Yes the HIV positive community is costly; I can personally attest to that. On average, my medications cost over $31,000 per year. This is just medication costs and does not account for the THOUSANDS of dollars spent annually on doctors, labs and hospital stays. However, can you REALLY put a cost on a human life? Am I not as worthy as the next person because I have a HUMAN virus? I do not think it is cost alone that is an issue (although it is a BIG part of it). I feel the bulk of the problem is stigma and fear. Thirty years after the disease came to be known, there is still the misconception

opinion that this is a GAY disease, a DIRTY person’s disease, or a SINNER’s disease. This is ridiculous and preposterous! This disease is a HUMAN disease. If you are human (and I assume you are) then you are AFFECTED and at risk! And I ask you this: Why do you fear saying the words HIV or AIDS? Why are you afraid to acknowledge its existence? Why do you fear me as an HIV positive person? The only fear you should have is waking one day to find your friends, your family, your loved ones, dying because you were too afraid to admit the truth. It is time to stop this “It is not my problem; It is not my disease attitude.” It is time to start working TOGETHER to find solutions to the problems of HIV infection and the rising cost of care. If the government is that concerned with cost, don’t take lives by reducing formularies or restricting people from getting help. Fight the pharmaceutical companies and force them to let go of the patents. Do not let them reapply if they change a formulary. I understand that they are in the business of making money, but not at the cost of the MILLIONS of lives affected by their greed every day.

I feel that this is the situation with the ADAP and Ryan White funding issues that are threating the lives of the people who receive assistance through these services. The HIV positive individuals who receive assistance through these programs believe there isn’t a problem because they have not seen the effect of not having their medications or services readily available to them. Individuals of today have forgotten what our brothers and sisters before us sacrificed. They gave up their time, their energy and, for many, their lives. Their unwavering dedication and care for a community that was downtrodden and broken brought hope that we, as HIV positive individuals, would be able to live happy, healthy lives. If it were not for their fight, we could not live. It is horrific to think that we, as HIV positive individuals 30 years after the crisis began, are faced with the same hardship and ignorance of a government that would rather ignore the fact that HIV exists and let us die. They are willing to sacrifice the many lives of people infected with this disease in order to save a dollar. The government is telling us that we are not worth more than a piece of paper with ink on it; we are not worth more than the change in their pockets. What I find even sadder is the apathy of the HIV positive community as a whole. We have fantastic advocates and HIV positive individuals who are fighting daily to protect us and keep the services we need to survive. That represents, however, only a
handful in comparison to the amount of HIV positive individuals who live in the state of Florida and the country. Why are they not standing up with fists held high, screaming at the top of their lungs? Why are they not fighting for their lives? Do they think the government will help? That the government will not allow it? WRONG!! It is the government that has brought us to this point. In my recent conversations, I have heard many advocates who are angry and frustrated with the HIV positive community because they are not fighting. Is it fear of reprisal? Is it fear of disclosure? To me, the biggest fear is the prospect of finding my friends, family and loved ones in their hospital beds gasping for their last breaths because they were unable to get the medications they needed to maintain their health. I guess I am angry at the HIV positive community (with some exclusions – and you know who you are) because I recently lost someone dear to me and have another friend who is ill. I have lost three people in three years. I DO NOT WANT TO LOSE ANYONE ELSE BECAUSE OF THIS DISEASE! I especially do not want to lose them because I was APATHETIC and did not fight to try to save their lives. H

Thinking About Making Some Home Improvements? By RICK GIBSON Have you considered or already made some home improvements? For some of us, this was always part of our plan. We bought a house that was in need of repair and planned to put some money towards the right kitchen, garden or whatever it is that was important to us. Suddenly, we realize we live at Home Depot and are not sure how we got there. For others, the idea of home improvements comes up only as a way to increase the value of the property. Whatever your reason for making improvements, some improvements return value on investment better than others. An example for us here in Florida is a fireplace. Most of us agree that having a fireplace adds great ambience, but the cost of adding one rarely pays off when you resell. So, this type of an improvement should be made only for the “pleasure” of the feature while you own it, and that can be crucial for many. Generally, a pool is a good investment if you enjoy it while living in or owning the property. In my opinion, a tasteful pool in a good area will pay for itself by about 75% on resale over 3 years. Studies have shown that nearly 90% of property buyers make a decision about a property from the moment they first see it from the street. So, no surprise, one of the highest returns on investment (ROI) in home improvement is paint. Tastefully painted homes that stand out (in a good
way) will create an impact that influences the subsequent viewing of the inside of the home or property. Avoid colors that are too strong, too personalized or too common. Home Depot and Lowes have great color “family” color cards to help you see what colors go well together to make some good decisions. Landscaping is next. My recommendation for anyone who does not enjoy landscaping is to hire some who does, or avoid the challenge. Plants are living things so need specialized attention to their needs. Ideally, you will find someone or a company that will be able to study your property, make recommendations on how to maximize its features with specific plants and will be there to maintain it for a reasonable sum. Your landscape and yard maintenance person will become a “relationship,” so it is best to “date” them first and see how that goes before getting too involved. Inside the home or property is a large and complex topic involving psychology, common sense and even the art of feng shui. The short version is to focus on the “first step” across the threshold of your property, whether it is your home or an investment. The first step, once past the “curb appeal allure,” should be the “wow” step. Watch people when they walk into a new property for the first time. We all look down (to avoid tripping) and then, of
course, look up. The “look up” should be met with floors that are not offensive or too ornate but rather “lead” our eyes to other focal points in the property. This is one of the reasons for use of diagonal tile. The lines of diagonal tile “lead” our eyes to other parts of the home. So, for example, in a waterfront, pool home, the triangular tile pattern should lead us straight to a view of a pool and water behind it. The experience of entering a home should be a comfortable, flowing experience of “options”. The ideal entrance will be one where we pause for a moment, are a bit overwhelmed, and decide between “options”… going one direction (to a kitchen, for example) or another (to the backyard and pool, for example). That moment of indecision is priceless and what, in my opinion, what distinguishes a “wow” home from others. I have only touched on a few thoughts to try and help people see improvements as complex, but not “too” complex for you to enjoy and take action. Making improvements that add to your quality of life are about as rewarding as it gets.H

IGLTA: Countdown to Convention
LGBT Greater Fort Lauderdale: The Future is in Your Hands By BOBBY BLAIR & CLIFF DUNN

The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion.” – Abraham Lincoln “We few, we happy few, we band of brothers…” – William Shakespeare, Henry V One of the last century’s great economists said that good ideas have to be relearned anew by each successive generation. Those of us in LGBT media know (and often quote the stats) that most gay men and women prefer to buy products from, or do business with, businesses and companies that support LGBT causes and that do outreach through various LGBT-themed media forms. But there is an inverse side to these numbers. A now-infamous Web posting that went semi-viral last year concerned the owner of a short-lived Wilton Manors business who announced his store’s swansong on his business’ site with a
posting that was more accusatory than informative [“We were here for you.”]. To further drive home the none-too-subtle point, the message states, with finality and a tone that is sweeping in its indictment: “Due to the lack of business and SUPPORT from ‘our community’ the [business] has no toher (sic) choice but to close!” The haranguing tone of the post notwithstanding, it is hard not to sympathize with the sense of disappointment that was surely conveyed: part Jeremiad, part cry for help, part reminder that we are all of us to some degree or other in this thing together. In Wilton Manors over the past 18 months, 17 businesses have closed their doors; as many as 10 more are projected to do likewise in the next few months. And many owners are facing the possibility of forced relocation for their businesses in response to what they perceive as egregious increases in their rent by landlords with unknown agendas. And yet, business remains an exercise in cooperation. This involves, to a large degree, getting large numbers of strangers to trust one another. It means persuading large numbers of people – bosses and employees, stockholders and suppliers, to say nothing of customers – to work together towards a common purpose. The Rainbow Business Coalition (RBC) of Greater Fort Lauderdale began as a group of likeminded business owners and community leaders who wanted to pool their individual ideas and best practices (hence the original working name, the “Think Tank”) in cooperation to achieve mutual goals. “The RBC endorses, sponsors, and promotes opportunities that benefit business,” offers Reece Darham, owner of Island City Health & Fitness in Wilton Manors and the current chair of RBC. “Sometimes an opportunity may be to pro-
mote a type of industry; sometimes an opportunity may be to promote across the business spectrum.” In its sophomore year, the group has been granted such an opportunity The International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association’s (IGLTA) decision to hold its 28th Annual Global Convention in Greater Fort Lauderdale represents an important short term economic fix that could bestow the benefits of long term, sustainable business opportunities. The Convention, which began on Tuesday, May 10, will include seminars and meetings for IGLTA members, as well as a number of events for delegates to interact with Greater Fort Lauderdale’s gay locals and scene. The largest of these is expected to be Friday’s Consumer Trade Show in Hagen Park, next to Wilton Manors City Hall. The Trade Show, which runs from 6 to 10 p.m., will be followed by a free live concert featuring Billboard recording artist Kristine W. By Darham’s best guess, “the IGLTA convention is estimated to bring in $1.3 million in the short week they are here, and has the potential to generate millions more in the months and years to come.” He recognizes, too, the long term impact to the entire area. “As a Travel and Tourism convention,” he notes, “this is even more salient for Fort Lauderdale in that we are a tourism destination and many, if not most, businesses rely on the additional influx of tourism dollars in season to carry those businesses in the off-season.” Both the Trade Show and concert have been underwritten by the RBC, which translated means its member business owners, and in some instances sponsors who have donated cash, product, or both. Darham insists that the owner/members have given “each according to his or ability,” and cites as standouts Jackson Padgett and Mark Negrete, owners of Georgie’s Alibi and Bill’s in Wilton Manors, who absorbed the costs for the concert and entertainers, including travel expenses, as well as Ken Kelley and Lloyd Pagels, the owners of Scandals Saloon in Wilton Manors and The Stable in Oakland Park. “I don’t think Jackson knows the meaning of ‘no’,” Darham laughs. “Ken
and Lloyd have been tremendous: not only will they be donating $3,500 in beer, but they have also secured Barefoot Winery as the wine sponsor.” He adds: “They will be the alcohol vendors for the event, giving the RBC 100% of all proceeds from sales.” Darham notes that Brown Forman Brands, makers of Chambord Vodka, “also gave a $3,000 cash donation and an additional $1,500 in-kind donation to the event and will be the sponsor of the VIP tent for the IGLTA delegates.” The business and community leaders who are investing their time, energies, and a-not-inconsiderable amount of money in the enterprise are upbeat and optimistic. “With so many nations represented at the convention, this event may very well secure Fort Lauderdale as a premier gay destination of choice for international traveler,” says Scandals’ Kelley. “We have a unique opportunity to let the world know that Florida is not just Miami. The potential economic impact will hopefully be realized, not just during this weekend, but for many years to come.” The Alibi’s Padgett agrees. “I believe the community will begin seeing some immediate financial influx of international dollars being spent over the next several months, but more importantly over the years to come.” In the end, how the community responds to this unique opportunity to meet new friends from exotic places and encourage them to make Fort Lauderdale a regular part of their – and their clients’ – travel plans will determine in large measure what the longterm payoffs will be. As Dr. Seuss wrote: “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go.” Another good idea it’s time to relearn.H

Politically Correct? When I was growing up, politics was one of those topics that polite people didn’t talk about; the same way you wouldn’t ask someone what they earn, you didn’t ask someone who they voted for. Here in the US, it is very different: People happily talk, fight and argue about whom they voted for and why, even so far as to explain vehemently why someone is wrong for having voted a certain way. This is a much healthier and positive way to come together and share opinions; it opens up the discussion on politics. As we all know, policy makers undoubtedly advance or hinder the progression of gay rights in the US. Times have changed and in the community we have our own agenda. We are naturally most interested in the advancement of our rights and, in that vein, it seemed most gay people often sided with Democrats. The tide, however, is changing and there are more and more Gay Republicans, Independents and even Tea Party members. This could be attributed to many factors, including an aging population. The simple fact is gay rights are often not enough to sway the LGBT voter. Candidates have to offer more: Healthcare, finance, schooling and adoption are just a few examples of policies that affect the LGBT population alongside gay rights. As a community that is diverse under the umbrella of LGBT, so to are the political views of the community. I received a letter a few weeks ago from a reader enraged that we were offering too much of a platform to the ‘few Republicans’ who support gay rights. This alone showed me the ire that politics causes. As attitudes in the US constantly evolve in support for the community, that change will ripple through all political parties. The opinion in question was that daughters of Republicans had come out in

Letters to the Editor DEAR EDITOR, I just finished reading your May 5 article on "Friends Without Benefits". You are right on!! Thanks for writing the article. IMO, friends either move here together, or people move here who already have friends living here. I moved here alone and had no friends here. It's very difficult to break into these pre-established friendship circles. It didn't take long after moving to FL from the Boston area to develop the very same perceptions in your article. I hang out mostly in coffee houses, not bars. But it's the same story. I frequently end up having conversations with people I only see in the coffee house. It's totally random when I'll see anyone again. It could be months. Though they seem to enjoy talking with me, not one person has ever invited me to do anything outside of the coffee house. It makes no

didates, policies and opinions from all parties, not just Democrats and Republicans, but Tea Party and Independents, as well. We all take issue with how slowly rights advance through politics (marriage equality being a hot button topic at the moment) but without showing every facet to each argument, you can never have a fair decision. We do not hold a position as a newspaper, nor do I as Editor. We will be covering all angles and policies that affect the community in any way. This enables you to review, decide and choose your candidates with full and clear knowledge of how they align with your core values, opinions and needs. Now is the time to speak out, use your voice. What are your political views? Which party do you support and why? Who do you think has the community’s best interests at the forefront? Debate, discuss – it is important to have an open communication in this crucial area as a voice for the community. Whether you are outraged or impressed, disgusted or enamored, your voice needs to be heard during the next eighteen months. Send in your letters and comments about policies you have read, or opinions you have heard from all walks of political life. I want to know what you, as an individual and a member of this community, think. By speaking out through the paper, you have the ability to reach out and ensure you offer opinions and feedback that enable all in the community to decide on the right leadership for the future. sense, that if two people enjoy talking with each other, that they can't plan to meet and not wait for a random time when they're both there. So I tried swapping email addresses with one person and took the initiative to contact him. That lasted one email. If you ask for a phone number, that's a real challenge to get someone interested. That means you're hitting on him, and if you're not his type, forget friends. I totally agree with you that Florida attracts an unusual number of flaky people. I would go one step further. You may not agree with this, but I think the outdoor playland culture here also attracts less intelligent people. I've lived in different places in the US. I've never met so many people who are less intelligent and less educated than anywhere else I've lived.
Educated doesn't have to mean having a lot of degrees. By educated, I mean being able and interested in conversing on a wide variety of issues. But few people here care about issues. All they care about is: real estate, the gym, clubs and the beach. This doesn't exactly attract your intellectual types. It's no surprise that Broward County has the highest HIV rate among gay men in the US. Lack of education and a carefree attitude account for that. I believe Americans, in general, have become more selfish and self-absorbed. Gay men reflect the larger society. However, I do think that gay men in Florida are especially selfish and self-absorbed. Who Knew? Three letters that can change your life and they’re not what you think. By sam knew, msw
It seems week after week we read about one three letter acronym after another that can affect our health, but here’s one you may now be as familiar with - HPV (human papillomavirus). For gay and bisexual men, it can be a secret killer. There are 6.2 millions cases in the U.S each year and over one hundred strains of the virus, forty of which are transmitted sexually. In previous years there have been studies linking HPV to cervical cancer, which encouraged the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to approve a vaccine for women. Recently, the FDA has also approved a vaccine for young males (9-26). But now there is talk about protecting the rest of our population, seeing as studies have linked HPV to genital infections - as well as some forms of cancers. The virus in men can typically go undetected and untreated for a lifetime, or until more severe infections and diseases develop. In some cases the virus can develop into genital warts, in areas of the penis, testicles, groin, thigh and anus. These cauliflower like warts tend not to be painful and disappear shortly after they appear, creating a misguided
sense of recovery. Genital warts affect about one percent of sexually active men. And although symptoms may disappear or the warts can be treated and removed, they can always reappear making treatment a life-long process. However, you may have bigger problems than warts to deal with in the long run. Gay and bisexual men are 17% more likely to develop anal cancer. In addition, HPV increases those risks, especially for individuals with weakened immune systems, such as men with HIV. Individuals with anal cancer can experience bleeding, pain, itching or discharge. Other symptoms include swelling of the lymph nodes in the groin and anus area. Penile cancer is also a risk factor linked to HPV. In the early stages, individuals might notice discoloration, toughing skin texture and build up of tissue on the penis. This could be followed by painful sores and bleeding; however, in some cases there may be no symptoms until the cancer has advanced. Fortunately, science has kept up with times. Unfortunately, insurance companies still have some catching up to do. The FDA has approved the vaccine for
young women and men, primarily focusing on the pre-sexually active population. One reason for the age restriction is the belief that nearly half of sexually active people already have acquired an HPV infection; which is why some older individuals (anyone over 26) might find it more difficult to cover the $375.00 cost of the vaccine. That hasn’t seemed to stop some doctors from encouraging clients to get vaccinated; arguing it can’t hurt - and it’s a lot cheaper than the cost of battling cancer.H

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – On March 27, 1911, a small, sleepy village was incorporated as the City of Fort Lauderdale. On the same date in 2011, an all-day Centennial Riverfest will recognize the 100th birthday of one of America's great beach vacation destinations attracting more than 10 million annual visitors from around the globe. The LGBT visitors number nearly a million annually, who spend in excess of $1 billion dollars in Fort Lauderdale, making it the leading gay tourist desti-
nation in the U.S. Fort Lauderdale's residents are inviting the world to a yearlong party featuring everything from family picnics, cultural exhibitions and walking tours to concerts, sports competitions, beach parties, a time capsule and a gala countdown to the New Year 2012. Fort Lauderdale's Centennial celebrations began with the installation of a large, lighted "100" on the city's famed beachfront, which has become a favorite "photo op" for visitors and residents alike. To commemorate the Centennial,
Charles Fazzino, the pop artist, was commissioned to create "Ten Decades of Fort Lauderdale," a 3D painting that captures in the artist's bright, energetic signature style the past, present and future of the city. Among the highlights of special events in 2011: a parade and outdoor festival on March 12 honoring St. Patrick's Day, a March 27 concert by Tropical Sinfonia, and the Centennial Riverfest, a day filled with activities, exhibitions, entertainment and food held along the New River in downtown Fort Laud-
erdale. Also the premier of giant photographic "then and now" video montages projected on the sides of buildings in the downtown area that depict the areas over the course of its 100 years of evolution. As early as 2,500 years ago, the marshy area was inhabited by Native Americans of the "Glades Culture." Seminole

Where the Boys Are: Sebastian Beach Fort Lauderdale Beach lies along State Route A1A. (also known as Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd. and Seabreeze Blvd), and is divided into two main sections, North and South. The more popular area is the southern section, which is the area from Sunrise Blvd south to the Las Olas Blvd area. One can't help but to take a stroll up and down the golden sandy beaches that provided the setting for the now famous movie "Where The Boys Are." You’ll probably find that most of the gays and lesbians hang out in the area between Las Olas Blvd up to Sunrise Blvd. at Sebastian Street, since there are a lot of gay owned and gay friendly resorts/hotels located near here. There is a cross walk signal right at Sebastian with a City parking lot just West of the Gay Section of the Beach. For years that section has been the unofficial Gay Beach of Fort Lauderdale. Although not as popular, the northern beach is just as beautiful, and provides a nice escape from the crowds. ‘100 YEARS’ Continued from Cover Indians and a few white settlers arrived in the early 19th century and Fort Lauderdale was named for Major William Lauderdale in 1838. In the 1890's, Frank Stranahan established a trading post at the ferry crossing on the New River, the beginning of today's lively downtown area. In 1896, the Florida East Coast Railway brought rapid growth to the region, which continued until the devastating hurricane of 1926 that killed hundreds and virtually destroyed the city. It was not until World War II and its aftermath that Fort Lauderdale began to grow again, but even into the 1980's its major claim to fame, greatly enhanced by the movie "Where the Boys Are," was as a "Spring Break" haven for some 350,000 college kids partying on a tight budget. It was then that the public and private sectors decided to join forces to totally transform the area. The Hopper is a safe and free transportation service that runs throughout Oakland Park and Wilton Manors and supports all local businesses. The idea of The Hopper is to create ways for the local community and international tourists to find a safe and economical way to enjoy the area and the great businesses we have to offer. Bobby Blair, CEO of Multimedia Platforms says that the Hopper will further promote “our online and print publications in a way to ensure that we continue to offer the very best circulation and reach in the market today. It brings us great pleasure to know tourists and locals will be reading our publications as they are transported around Wilton Manors and the Fort Lauderdale area.” The rollout of the venture started with two cars that will run in the evenings. By June 1st, they will add a day car, with the intention to add cars as demand grows to service the areas. When the Green Hopper closed, it left a void for a free shuttle service in the area. We are very excited to help local small businesses flourish. GREATER FORT LAUDERDALE REAL ESTATE: Is it Time to Buy? Last month, the South Florida SunSentinel.com reported that median existing home prices in Broward County, Florida – including the Greater Fort Lauderdale area - rose more than 6 percent in the first quarter of 2011. The Sun-Sentinel reported that “according to the Florida Realtors [i]n February, the median of $167,000 skyrocketed 22 percent from a year ago — the county's largest increase in any month since December 2005.” The story went on to note that “Broward's prices are stronger, at least for now, because its supply of homes is smaller.” “When inventory levels fall, buyers compete for fewer properties, which can lead to bidding wars and price increases,” it said.

FORT LAUDERDALE TOURISM STRONG IN 2010 Gains in Domestic, International Arrivals Outpace Rest of Florida
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – Outpacing the rest of Florida, Greater Fort Lauderdale recorded a 2.6 percent increase in total visitors in 2010, according to yearend estimates. Spending in the local economy by the 10.84 million visitors also rose from $8.47 billion to $8.69 billion. Of those numbers, the LGBT visitors rose to nearly 1 million, They’re spending accounted for $1.1 billion in revenue for the area. Traffic at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood Inter-national Airport jumped 6.4 percent. Statewide, Florida saw a 2.1 percent increase in visitors. "Given the realities of the economy over the past year, these are very impressive figures, clearly demonstrating that Greater Fort Lauderdale's tourism industry is reaping the rewards of hard work and creative marketing over the past few months. We have every reason to be optimistic about 2011 based on the success of 2010," said Nicki E. Grossman, president of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. Greater Fort Lauderdale will show a 2.7 percent increase in domestic visitors in 2010. Canadian visitors increased by 3.6 percent and Latin America by 2.6 percent, including a doubling of arrivals from Brazil, which is now Greater Fort

Lauderdale's second largest foreign market. Growth from Latin America was aided by increased air service from the region by Spirit Airlines and other carriers. Arrivals from Scandinavia, Europe, and the UK also showed modest gains, a reflection of the continued strengthening of the long-haul inbound vacation market. Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport's year-end figures showed 22,412,627 arriving and departing passengers in 2010, including 18,965,234 domestic travelers, a 5.2 percent gain over a year ago. Based on 2010 results and a slowly strengthening global economy, Greater Fort Lauderdale officials are forecasting 11 million visitors in 2011.b

Your Workouts Demand Your Total Attention! Every time I hit the gym, I see certain things that really bug me. I’m basically a patient guy, but a few of these items need to be mentioned from time to time because they are mistakes that could affect you and your workouts. Don’t ditch free weights for machines. Sure, there are pros and cons for each. Machines are easy to adjust, you can’t drop them and, for the most part, you can zip from station to station quickly. But free weights give you more freedom and versatility. You can work more muscle groups, burn more calories and increase flexibility with free weights more than with variable resistance machines. Make free weights the center of your workouts and add machines to isolate those areas which need a little extra attention. Free weights require more exertion and planning, but isn’t that why it’s called ‘working out’? Don’t jerk the weights. Using proper form for each rep of each set is much more important than trying to break weight lifting records every time you lift.

If you increase your weights by 3 to 5 percent every two to three months or so, you are doing fine and making progress. Don’t hurry through your sets, and take your time and make each rep count. Paying attention to good form allows you to feel your muscle fibers contracting and stretching as they work. Jerking weights and hurrying through sets is a recipe for injury and injuries mean set backs and unwanted time off. Don’t gobble protein bars and guzzle sports drinks during your workouts. Most guys aren’t running a marathon or working out intensely for more than two hours. These are the situations where you need some extra calories during exercise. Save your bars for before – or especially after – workouts. As a rule, sports drinks contain far more sugar than you need; water is your best bet before, during and after gym time. Don’t put off your workouts. Your sessions – which should include cardiovascular training, weights and stretching – are important preventative measures
you are taking today to avoid health problems and expensive health care costs in the future. Be consistent with your work- outs and you will see and feel results as quickly as today! Don’t cancel workouts because you are too busy, too tired or lack motivation. The old saying, “I’ll think about it tomorrow!” may have suited lovely Scarlett O’Hara, but it won’t work for a big strong girl like you! Get your ass into the gym. No excuses. Don’t multi-task at the gym. When you work out, make sure to give it your all. Know what you intend to accomplish before you go through the front door. Keep track of your progress in a notebook. Pay attention to the tasks at hand – doing your cardio, lifting weights and stretching. Texting, talking on the phone and cruising all have their place, but when you’re at the gym, workout! Remember also that the gym is a public place – you don’t own it, so be considerate and don’t hog up machines or hover at stations just so that you can text or take a call. Your workouts are an

A Divine Experience Through Adversity to Blessings

Rajee has, through dance, fashion, music and literature, expressed her creativity for a number of years. She danced as a regular dancer on Dance Party USA, hit the radio airways with her debut single "Stumble" and released three books. You have become successful in the face of adversity; please tell Agenda readers your story. From the age of 4, I felt like something was oddly different about me. At that age is when the kids in the neighborhood began to call me names like faggot and sissy. Throughout school they were relentless with bullying me; I was scared to tell my parents or my sister Kashmira because I felt very ashamed about it. In retrospect, my femininity was like the white elephant in the room. My father especially had a hard time with it and I remember feeling very scrutinized by him (before he passed away in 2004, he came to somewhat accept and he told that it didn't matter anymore. That I am his child and he loved me.) From young, I felt a sexual energy from heterosexual men. In high school, I became quite popular due to my participation in a number of extracurricular activities, my extensive volunteer work with the American Red Cross and I was chosen as a regular dancer for the national TV show Dance Party USA. But there was always the stigma over me that I was a queerdo. I managed to graduate from high school and received the Humanitarian Award from the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers. Not able to deal with the scrutiny of my father anymore, I left home at the age of 21 and headed to South Florida. For some years I lived as an androgynous person and slowly my transgenderism came out on the physical. At that point I thought
that my life had been extremely difficult but boy, did the road get harder. You have had some very negative experiences when you started out, including some plastic surgery issues. Tell us some more about that. About eight years ago, I was brutally beaten-up by some guys that targeted me for being transgender. Two black eyes, busted and bloody lip, my face swollen from physical blows of hatred and bigotry. They called me horrible names like freak! The names hurt almost as much as the punches! I was scared to go to the police for fear of being re-victimized. I went home. Gut wrenching cries of hopelessness. Feeling like I don't have the strength to go on. I wanted to kill myself. As I lay in my pain with an ice pack on my face, suddenly I heard a voice. The voice was soft but sound. It said “balance my child.“ This wasn’t a dream – more an out of body experience that was extremely vivid and spectacular. That was the major turning point in my life! Another very challenging time in my life was when I experienced a bad reaction to black market silicone I had gotten put in my face. I began to get tumor-like nodules on the left side of my face. I felt like I was beginning to look like the elephant woman. Black market silicone is commonly done in the Trans community; it's a quick and relatively inexpensive way to feminization. But I'm realizing now often times not without a price. For about 13 years, I have been speaking at many venues around South Florida for the Yes Institute. How did you come back from this? By the grace of God! I'm blessed to have a mother that has always been in my

corner. Even when she was not able to understand me being transgender, her love and support has always been a constant in my life. Also Dr. John J. Martin has been wonderful. He said because of all the work I do with Yes he wanted to help me. For a small cost he performed surgery on my face to remove the nodules. How has your writing helped you? I have a total of three books published. They are The Windows to My Soul (a collection of poetry), The Hand I Was Dealt (Transgender novel) and The Writing of a Demi God (writings on my spiritual journey). I have always loved expressing myself through creativity and writing has been one of the vehicles I have used to do that. I have always had the burning desire to connect with the souls of people and I've found that my writing has afforded me the opportunity to do that. It has also been therapy for me. How do you feel general attitudes towards the gay community and transgendered issues are changing? We have come a long way. I believe that because we are getting more credible exposure in the media, society isn't as ignorant about gay and transgender people. Also, with gay and trans protection being added to the human rights ordinances around the country people are held more accountable for the treatment towards us. Why do you think support of transgendered individuals is so far behind acceptance and support of the gay community? I think it has a lot to do with the way we were being represented in the media. We are often mocked and I feel people think we have taken it too far. Every society has their gender rules. The way a woman should act and the way a man should act in that society. So, when you are someone caught in-between, it makes people very uncomfortable. I had family members ask me why I couldn't have just been gay. All we are trying to do is match our body with our brains. Scientists have now found that during pregnancy the fetus brain develops as one gender and the body develops as the other. So, a baby is born with the brain and body not matching. Hence, Transgender people! What advice would you offer young people who are coming out, or discovering who they really are? When I was growing up, GLBT youth did not have the resources that are available to youth today. Because of the lack of support, I felt very alone. For GLBT people, that can be our worst enemy. I would recommend that young people try and find some sort of support group in their community. I would like young people to know that it is extremely important to live your authentic self. That there is a freedom in that, and I also want them to know that it gets better.
What do you enjoy about being part of the community here in South Florida? I feel that there is truly a GLBT community here in Wilton Manors (South Florida). As a very noticeable transsexual woman, I don't think I would do too well in somewhere like Mississippi. It’s so refreshing to see thriving GLBT people living and working together in a community. All of the gay businesses are also very refreshing. As a transgender woman, often times I am afraid to go in to certain areas of the city. With Wilton Manors, I feel safe to walk down the street. What negativity do you find here? I do still notice some divide within the GLBT community. I would love to see all the labelling stop and more unity. After all, whether you are Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual or Transgender, we are pretty much in the same boat. More unity is what our community needs. Actually, I would love to see that for the entire world. I wish that everyone would realize that the beauty of this world is the diversity of it. We are all like flowers in God’s beautiful garden. I think of myself like a sunflower. They are oddly shaped, but so bright and beautiful. You have had strong support from some incredible people, including Mother Theresa and The Dalai Lama. It gives me great joy to share my creativity with people. Through my writing, music and presentations, I believe that I am fulfilling with divine purpose. I felt extremely blessed when I was acknowledged by Mother Theresa and the Dalai Lama, as well as most recently the President and First Lady. What is in store in the future for Rajee? I intend to continue my advocacy and humanitarian work here in the GLBT community and the world as a whole. I would like to continue my speaking on a larger scale (possibly get signed with a Speakers Bureau) and get more acting roles in movies. After playing the principle role of Aunt Norma in the movie Bella Maddo, I have the acting bug. It would be nice to see more trans actors getting roles in movies. Bella Maddo was the first of its kind: An all transexual cast playing nontranssexual roles. Black actresses had to eventually stop just playing maids in order for us to now have actresses like Halle Berry and Angela Bassett. When I pass away, I would like to pass away knowing in my soul that I made a loving and positive difference in the universe!H

I’ve lived in Florida at least part of the year for almost 50 years, before I-95, South Beach or Wilton Manors were ever heard of, and when Ft. Lauderdale was more famous for its Connie Francis movies than the gay mecca it is today. She must have been clairvoyant! In one of her movies she sang her hit single “Where the Boys Are.” South Florida, for me, is paradise. I’ve traveled from “Sea to shining Sea.” There isn’t anywhere else I wish to call home. Through the years I’ve endured hearing “these people down here!”, and just recently endured another tirade about
“these people” by a fairly new resident to Florida. I feel compelled to give my two cents. Florida’s demography is similar to that of the United States, plus, it’s a melting pot within a melting pot. People flock here, as past vacationers, corporate transfers, or trickle down one by one following their family, seeking the “good life.” All of them have one thing in common … great expectations! Ah, rose colored visions of living in paradise; the sun, palm trees, lazy days at the beach, no bone chilling winters … a 24/7 vacation! Reality, a place many new residents aren’t prepared to visit, hits them like a brick sooner or later after they’ve moved to Florida. Seemingly, all of a sudden the very reasons they fell in love with Florida lose their shine. Hmm, ever have a dating experience like that? New residents “wake up” to the fact they are NOT in New York, New Jersey, Michigan and certainly, not in Kansas anymore! It’s common to subconsciously expect the sense of belonging and roots which took decades to establish where they relocated from to magically “happen” in their new life Florida. People start nit-picking. Delis, bakeries, malls, the clubs, you name it, and especially “the people here”, just aren’t as good as from where these new comers came from. I’ve heard
people bemoaning countless times, “People just aren’t the same here, I have made friends but not as close as the friendships I had back home.” When someone says that, I pose these questions: “How long did it take to cultivate those friendships from where they came from, and what makes someone think similar relationships will be made in a matter of months, one, or two years?” “With that attitude, can’t one see the “wall” he is putting up that actually hinders building the exact quality of friendships he says he can’t find here?” Don’t compare where you came from to where you are! It’s smart advice in the dating game, and the same should be followed when you move to Florida. Every reason you fell in love with Florida still exists. Just think, ten really hot bathing suits can be had for the price of one chichi winter coat! Put yourself out there! Be the kind of person you want to be with. There are many GLBT sports teams, political groups and charities to join. Don’t count on the bars for social
substance. Do the same things in Florida which helped you create friendships “up north”. Be yourself, engaging, positive and people will be warm up to you. Invite new acquaintances to your home. Do I dare suggest a party? All great friendships start with “Hello”. There are wonderful people out there. It is a cliche, but very true, Florida, like everything else, will undoubtedly be what you make it. Don’t stop chasing your rainbow! Hey, life is short, you’re here now, you have the power to make it your HOME in paradise! What could be better than that?H

A Room With a View
Pamper Your Palate at SAIA The B Ocean Hotel, on the site of the former Holiday Inn, continues the evolution of Fort Lauderdale Beach. Tucked in the left corner of the sleek and spacious lobby is its signature restaurant, SAIA. I am told the name is a play on the hotel’s location: the corner of Sunrise and A1A. I am not certain whether that is true or not, but if it is, it makes sense and is very clever. SAIA is anchored by an underlit bar offering a cocktail menu that goes beyond the typical variations on a cosmo. I fell in love with SAIA’s version of an Old-Fashioned. It is a tasty, refreshing blend of ginger, lemon, honey and Soju, a Japanese vodka. Ask your bartender to tone down the sweetness a tad, and you will be rewarded with a cocktail that is refreshing and spicy. It prepares the palate well for the delicious dishes to come. The dining room is subtle yet elegant, anchored in soothing tones of blue and grey. Tables line the floor to ceiling glass walls, which give diners a beautiful view of the ocean, something we locals too often take for granted. The dining concept at SAIA is that food is meant to be shared. The serving platters are large and accommodating for each well-presented dish. James, our server, offered an overview of the menu, and his knowledge of the various dishes and entrees

that Chef Subin Chenkosorn has created was impressive. Too often, servers appear to know little or nothing about the food the menu offers. Not the case at SAIA. We began our journey with an order of Edamame. SAIA offers this traditional dish with a twist: You may order the soy beans salted or chili spiced or a combination of both. My dining partner and I opted for the combo. They were delicious, giving just the right amount of kick without being too spicy. Next up was the Ocean Blue Roll. It is a delectable combination of eel, avocado, boursin cheese and crab. It is then tempura fried. Quite honestly, I have never had a sushi roll quite like it. It is crunchy, creamy and fresh. The play of the fish with the cheese is a tasty contrast. Next up was a Crunchy Tuna Roll. Once again, we were treated to a fresh and beautiful roll offering spicy tuna, tempura flake, avocado, kiware and sprouts. It is topped with white tuna, cucumber and red tabiko. Spicy without being overly so, this roll is a must if you are a tuna lover. After a brief break, we next looked at the Share Plates Menu, which has several cool plate and hot plate selections. The Pork Tenderloin hot plate option caught my dining partner’s eye and it was an excellent choice. Fork
jean’s Eton kitchen Mess "Eton Mess" pays tribute not only to the place where it was invented, Eton College (which is one of Britain's most famous public schools, whose alumni includes 18 Prime Minister's of Great Britain), but also to the fact that the cream, strawberries and broken meringue are all mixed together in one big bowl that looks, really, like a bit of a mess. This is a very simple dessert that needs to be assembled just before serving so the pieces of meringue stay nice and crisp. Luckily, though, there are only three ingredients involved and most of the prep work can be done in advance. For starters, the meringue can be store bought or, if you prefer making your own as I do, then they can be made several days beforehand. Next, the cream can be whipped several hours in advance and stored in the refrigerator, and the strawberries can be cut and sweetened about an hour in advance. You can use as much meringue as you like in Eton Mess, you are the chef. • 1 pint heavy whipping cream • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract • 1 pound fresh strawberries • ¼ lb raspberries • fresh mint to garnish • 3 tablespoons granulated white sugar, or to taste In a large mixing bowl place the whipping cream, vanilla extract and 2 table-
spoons of sugar and stir to combine. Cover and chill the bowl and wire whisk in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. When chilled, beat the mixture until stiff peaks form. If not using right away, cover and place in the fridge. Place about one third of the strawberries in your food processor and process until just pureed. Cut the rest of the strawberries into bite-size pieces and place in a large bowl along with the pureed strawberries. Sprinkle some white sugar over the strawberries and stir to combine. Taste. Break the meringue into bite size pieces. Then fold the “mess” and meringue into the whipped cream. Place in long stemmed glasses. Top with a whole strawberry, and a few raspberries and a sprig of fresh mint. Serve immediately.H

tender pork arrives in a sweet soy ginger sauce with enoki mushrooms. Plated in such a way that made it so easy to share, we were impressed that the sauce, while sweet in a subtle way, was not cloying so as to overpower the pork. The Hamachi Jalapeno plate that James recommended, was an achievement in a perfect harmonious blend of flavours, thin slices of Himachi with jalapeno chili and ponzu sour orange sauce, cilantro and daiko decorated the platter. It nearly melted in my mouth as each flavor had its moment of glory. Every dish we ordered allowed all the flavors to come through, without any one ingredient overpowering the others. This suggests a careful attention to the finer details of making each dish so that diners truly experience the array of flavors suggested in the description. Having no room for dessert — maybe next time! James offered to demonstrate a unique feature of SAIA’s after dinner cordials and cocktails. He arrived at our table with what looked like a heavy copper cylinder. He then proceeded to place a small block of ice within the cylinder and then topped it with what looked like a plunger. About 90 seconds later, he revealed a perfect ice sphere. Your selected cordial is then poured into the glass containing the ice sphere. As James explained, the spherical ice melts much

Spring Creek Ranch, Wyoming Return to Brokeback Mountain By PAUL RUBIO ince hitting the big screen that fateful weekend in 2005, Brokeback Mountain ignited a fiery GLBT love affair (and profound carnal lust) for the cowboys and snow-capped peaks of Wyoming. The romance between Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal and that unforgettable “spit” scene renewed a lost bond between gay men and the American West. But more than phenomenal acting and a gratuitous soft porn scene, the movie showcased jaw-dropping landscapes that often stole the spotlight from Jake’s baby blues and pronounced crotch bulge. Though “Brokeback Mountain” is a fictitious place, the raw nature of Wyoming is very much a reality. And while the 1960s homophobia depicted in the film prevails throughout much of Wyoming, tourist-centric Jackson Hole has evolved as a liberal enclave in the land of lassos, grizzlies and western studs. In fact, on the outskirts of Jackson Hole and Grand Teton National Park, Spring Creek Ranch (307.733.8833; www.springcreekranch.com) welcomes the GLBT community to bask in the frivolity and fantasia of one of America’s most beautiful natural playgrounds.

Jake Gyllenhaal won’t be there to guide you, but your own mountain memories will supplant and even triumph over the vivid movie in your mind.H

One of Greater Fort Lauderdale’s few unchanging landmarks – no, not Miss Kitty from Bill’s – celebrated its 61st Anniversary last month. While most of us have noted the passage of time upon our own visages, the heritage Gateway Theatre – at the curve where Sunrise Boulevard meets Federal Highway – has remained (largely) unchanged through the decades. (Yes, she’s showing her wrinkles and there are sights and scents only to be found in a building designed during the Truman Administration, but still…) Opened in 1950 by the once mighty Miami-based Wometco Enterprises as a single screen venue, its acquisition in the 1980s saw its conversion into a fourtheater Cineplex, although much of its original style has been preserved. Among other cinematic events past and present, the Gateway was the site of the 1960 world premiere of “Where the Boys Are”, the movie that helped put Fort Lauderdale on the cultural map.
