WILTON MANORS, FL – On Tuesday, May 17, the Wilton Manors City Council held a breakfast business roundtable at Hagen Park. Approximately 125 local business owners attended the meeting which included speakers from the various city departments and committees. The well-attended meeting was conducted by Mayor Gary Resnick. Naturally, of prime concern was the current economic conditions and how it was affecting businesses in the city. Though much emphasis was based on Wilton Drive itself, the prime entertainment district, Resnick showed concern for the entire city business situation including Dixie Highway, Oakland Park Boulevard and Andrews Avenue. Resnick emphasized the importance of last weekend’s International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association convention, which was held in Ft. Lauderdale/Wilton Manors, bringing travel professionals
from 35 different countries into the area to introduce them to Wilton Manors and what the city has to offer and spoke on how the city needs to encourage additional tourism to Wilton Manors. Resnick also wanted to dispel rumors that Wilton Manors is not a “business friendly” city, but admits more needs to be done to assist businesses in the city. Resnick said his goal was to make Wilton Manors the “most business-friendly city in the State of Florida”. Resnick also admitted that, for a period of time, the city was not focused on economic development, which he referred to as being “unfortunate,” but the city lacked the resources and they are now changing the focus and direction. Heidi Shafran, the new head of the city’s Community Development Services Department (building and zoning) said that she is reorganizing the department ‘WILTON MANORS’ continues on Page 13
Androgynous Male Photo Too Sexy for U.S. Magazine Cover Censored by Bookstores If you try to pick up the latest issue of Dossier Journal magazine at either Borders Bookstore or Barnes & Noble, you will notice the photo on the cover is covered by opaque packaging. The two major booksellers have determined the cover to be too provocative for their newsstands. On the cover is male model, Andrej Pejic, shirtless. Pejic, however, has a very female-looking face and the stores have determined that he looks too feminine to be a male. The gender-bending model himself is a worldwide sensation, having appeared in runway shows modeling both male and female clothing. The 19-year old Pejic was born in Bosnia to a Serbian mother and a Croatian father. The family moved to Melbourne, Australia, when he was eight. Pejic was discovered by a modeling scout at the age of 16 while working at a McDonald’s restaurant. Since his discovery, Pejic has been noted for his androgynous look, and in
Paris fashion shows this year he walked both men’s and women’s shows for designer Jean-Paul Gautier and men’s shows for Marc Jacobs. At the Paris show he even modeled a wedding dress for Gautier. During the most recent New York fashion week, Pejic modeled in five menswear shows and four womenswear shows and has ridden a global wave of popularity in fashion circles with his “femiman” look. He currently ranks as number 11 of the top fifty models on models.com. According to the Huffington Post, they spoke to Dossier Co-Founder and Creative Director Skye Parrot, who explained that the bookstores asked for all copies of the magazine to be placed in “opaque poly bags because even though they knew Pejic was a

Alibi Takes Top Burger Award 2nd Year in a Row By BRAD CASEY
For the second year in a row, Georgie’s Alibi has taken top honors in the second annual Riverwalk Trust’s Burger Battle. The Alibi beat out the popular Capital Grille by a half point to be crowned The Best Tasting Hamburger in Broward County. A sold out crowd of 800 hamburger lovers jammed the private yard of the Riverside Hotel on East Last Olas Boulevard last Friday night to sample hamburgers from 15 top notch eateries in Broward County. Seven distinguished judges, including Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler, Chef Bill Mitchell of Publix Apron’s Cooking School and Chef Jack Kane, program director of Culinary Arts at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale were among the judges.
Restaurants that were invited to participate included Morton’s Steakhouse, Capital Grille, Pelican Landing at Pier 66, Hard Rock Café and Big City Tavern. Last year’s win for the Alibi was a PR bonanza with the gay themed bar and café serving an estimated 250 Champ burgers a day for several weeks after the competition. Alibi General Manager Vincent Frato said, “It’s very gratifying to see our hard work recognized at such an event and doing so in back to back years says a lot for our staff and dedication to doing the best we can.” Last year, Alibi won the Best Burger Battle by a unanimous decision of the judges.H

Sidelines to Feature “Beer Pong” WILTON MANORS, FL – Starting Sunday, May 29 (Memorial Day Weekend) at 4 p.m., Sidelines Sports Bar will be featuring the trendy college sport, Beer Pong. Each Sunday, threemember teams will compete for the chance to enter the “Finals” competition in August. Sidelines is looking for those fiercely competitive players interested in a lot of fun and games. Interested contestants should see one of Sidelines’ managers to sign up. Beer Pong is a drinking game in which players throw a ping pong ball across a table with the intent of landing the ball in a cup of beer (water substituted at Sidelines) on the other end. The game typically consists of three-player teams and multiple cups set up, in triangle formation, on each side. There are no official rules, so rules may vary widely, though usually there are six or ten plastic cups arranged in a triangle on each side. Each side then takes turns attempting to shoot ping pong balls into the opponent's cups. If a ball lands in a cup, then a glass of beer is consumed by the “losing” side, and the cup is then placed aside. The first side to eliminate all of the opponent's cups is the winner.H

There was a time when I was terrified of revealing these things to the person I love most in this world - my own mother. never imagined possible. Yet I still chose to keep those secrets hidden from the world. I, like most gay people, lived a life of fear. Fear that if some employers, coworkers, friends, neighbors and family members learned of my sexuality, I would be shunned, mocked and ostracized. It is a burden that millions of people carry with them every single day. And sadly, while the mockery and ostracizing are realized by millions of people every day, I truly believe it doesn’t have to happen and that’s why I feel compelled to share what I’ve written in Transparent. Tooth and Nailed! I get asked a lot if I am sure I am from England. When I ask why, I get a few different answers but I’d say one of the top three is always, ‘Well you have nice teeth; people in Britain don’t.’ Now I can say this confidently: I know A LOT of British people with very good teeth. I also have seen bad teeth there, too. Since I have been coming to the US, I have admired the Million Dollar smiles you see on TV. Lately, however, I have seen more One Dollar smiles here, though I hadn’t given it a huge amount of thought until this weekend. Picture the scene: Late Friday night, I had just gotten home from a wonderful dinner at Chez Max by my condo. I was getting ready for bed when suddenly I felt something crack, a sharp pain and my mouth was filled with what felt like grit. As I ran my tongue around, I realized I had broken a back tooth. I could feel the hole – it felt just like the Grand Canyon! At nearly midnight, I called a friend who warned me going to the emergency dentist would cost a fortune. So, I waited till Saturday instead. I found a dentist and had a fairly painful crown and pin added (the tooth was fortunately not decayed, but the previous crown had collapsed). This was all fine and dandy until I was presented the bill. I had no choice but to ask if I was putting the deposit down on the lease of a Mercedes! It was astronomical and I was sure I had been ripped off (how else could daylight robbery of that magnitude be accepted?). I paid the bill and left, feeling quite simply violated. After calling around to various people – and at one point being told ‘you got off lucky’ – I started to wonder how on earth are people expected to be able to remotely afford dental – or medical care, for that matter – without extortionate and multiple health insurance policies? Over the last few weeks, a lot of people have written in with well-founded concerns and outrage regarding crippling medical costs of treatments and vaccines, which I understand; however, to have a relatively simple dental procedure cost so much really brought home to me the huge issue facing so many right here in the community. I am now even more convinced there needs to be a lot more fight against the idea that only wealthy people should have access to decent medical care. This not a new argument, and one that has very much shown America to be extremely different and, in many ways,
Alex Vaughn inferior to vast parts of the globe, but nothing seems to have changed. It is mind boggling that if you are unable to plonk down a couple of grand for something as remotely simple as a crown or you don’t have dental insurance, you can’t have it. This is not even getting into the potential short- and long-term costs for more serious medical treatments and procedures for cancer, which is more likely to affect gay men, HIV, HPV, kidney disease, coronary and respiratory diseases and a
FLORIDAAGENDA.COM
whole host of other medical concerns that, without a fully comprehensive medical policy, you simply won’t get access to the necessary and life-saving treatment immediately. To be fair, the US has always had a private healthcare mentality; in the UK it is a luxury, not a necessity. Everyone knows this, so people should always save and have medical insurance. It should be a priority. It’s foolish not to, but as in any community and society there are people who simply can’t afford to. In that case there needs to be a real and serious commitment on a state-wide and local scale to help those in need. Funding cuts to programs for the community is obviously not the answer, but it shouldn’t even have been considered an option. It will ultimately end up letting people die. Furthermore, in the case of dentists, people with teeth they can’t afford to fix will undoubtedly lose them. When that happens, they will be even less employable! It is just a fact: People look at teeth in the same way they look at nails as a benchmark for hygiene and personal maintenance. A winning smile wins you the job and many other things! In the UK, the way dentists often work is their practices offer both private and National Health Service dentistry. Getting your teeth worked on within the NHS is not free, but very inexpensive. The dentist is then reimbursed by the government up to what he would charge a private patient. This ensures pretty much no one loses. In a community where there is, unfortunately, a great need for medical insurance and treatment, we need to be louder in our voices. We need to speak to our representatives and really stand strong. Everyone, no matter their sexual orientation, ethnicity or, most importantly, income level, must have medical and dental care. That said, responsibility also lies at your door. If you have spare money, don’t spend it all living a hedonistic lifestyle, put it into a medical plan. No matter how well you live your life or how careful you are, cancer, heart attack, diabetes, strokes and so many more diseases do not discriminate and one day you may very well need an operation or treatment, and you need to have that safety net. That’s the extreme, it could be as simple as you might just come home one night and have a broken tooth … can you afford to get nailed? H

A Condom in a Pill Bottle: What the HPTN 052 Study Means for Gay Men By STEPHEN FALLON, PHD Big news lit up the Internet this week: HIV treatments seem to block the virus from spreading during sex. Researchers from the National Institutes of Health tracked more than 1,700 couples and found that “earlier initiation of (the medicines that fight HIV) led to a 96 percent reduction in HIV transmission to the HIV-uninfected partner.” How does this work? Anti-HIV medicines interrupt the virus’ ability to multiply inside a person. Scientists suspected that if there’s less HIV in a person it’s less likely that any will leak out in their sexual fluids. Up until now, most prior studies have traced backwards from outcomes. Researchers couldn’t be sure if some other cause might have lowered contagion. This time, they enrolled people first then watched what happened when they took medicines. That makes this study more convincing.
• Isn’t this great news in the battle against AIDS? Don’t flush the condoms yet. It turns out, 97% of the couples studied were heterosexual, and half were women. While
the protection afforded during straight vaginal sex probably applies to gay anal sex, too, this wasn’t specifically proven. More importantly, nearly all of the patients studied were living outside the United States. Researchers had “difficulties enrolling (U.S.) participants into the study.” It’s possible that patients in the other countries (Botswana, Brazil, India, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Thailand, and Zimbabwe) were more diligent about taking their medicines than typical Western patients are, because the consequences of HIV are starkly more visible in their homelands. Unfortunately, HIV is not a forgiving disease; if patients skip more than a few doses the virus roars back. In the U.S. and Europe, patients who start out faithfully taking HIV medications typically backslide after two years on treatment, dropping to take less than three-out-offour doses on time. If people skip doses, their virus levels won’t drop enough, and any prevention benefits will disappear. Worse, if they spread HIV now, it will probably be a more deadly, drug resistant virus. A 2002 study found that among people unable to fully control their virus, every tenfold
increase in HIV levels made them 81 percent more likely to pass HIV to a partner.
• Whether or not HIV medications stop new infections for U.S. gay men, shouldn’t everyone who’s HIV+ take medicines right away, to protect their own health? Here, things get much murkier. The question about when to start treatment has been debated for years. Delivered at the right time, anti-HIV medications add years, or even decades to life expectancy. But they also often trigger troublesome side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, fatigue, sleep problems, sexual dysfunction, and even hair loss. Over time, their effects on the body’s balances can lead to heart attacks and strokes, liver failure, anemia, diabetes, chronic depression, kidney failure, embarrassing changes in body shape, and more. So the rationale has been to spare people these effects, and only start prescribing medicines when they’re truly needed to support life. The new NIH study may lead physicians to prescribe HIV treatment even earlier than the nation’s guidelines cur-
rently recommend. But it’s not yet entirely clear that the earliest possible treatment lengthens life. It might just add more years of side effects without any net benefit. Even this week’s study did not find a definite life benefit for those under early treatment. The authors noted, “There were also 23 deaths during the study. Ten occurred in the immediate treatment group and 13 in the deferred treatment group, a difference that did not reach statistical significance.”
• “It’s time for you to take my pills for me.” The new study raises an ethical question: who is treatment for? If HIV treatContinued on PAGE 12

Cartensen was 46. Carstensen was born on a U.S. Air Force base in Germany to a father who was an Air Force pilot. He grew up in Germany and had owned a bar in Cologne prior to coming to the United States on vacation. While on vacation in Fort Lauderdale, Carstensen went to Jeanis’ Gold Coast Bar and struck up a conversation, not knowing that Jeanis was an owner of the club. That was in 1995 and the couple had been together ever since. Jeanis ended up making Carstensen a full partner in the Gold Coast and they opened several other clubs together in South Florida, including Ambiance and New York Club in Boca Raton and Club 7 on South Beach. Prior to coming to moving to South Florida, Jeanis owned several successful clubs in Chicago and Michigan. Carstensen was a design engineer by trade and is responsible for designing the lobby of the Hard Rock Resort and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. He was also responsible for designing and building the waterfront home the couple have
lived in for the last 15 years and was always remodeling the house. Jeanis referred to him as being a design engineer by day and a bar owner at night Together, they loved to throw parties for their friends at their house and both enjoyed boating; Carstensen was considered the captain of their boat. Ironically, in addition to sharing their business and lives together, they also shared the same birth date, July 13. “I still picture him inside the house with a ladder,” said Jeanis. “He was always remodeling the house. He designed every piece of crown molding. I still cry every time I see it.” Jeanis describes his fondest memories of Carstensen was when they traveled together. “One of my fondest memories was us traveling around the world together. Rolf showed me throughout Europe and I showed him throughout the United States.” “He was a great and interesting person,” said Brad Casey. “He had a certain flare for life and was always one of the first in line when some charity needed some help fundraising.” H
‘CONDOM IN A PILL BOTTLE’ continued from PAGE 11
bad players; many never infect anyone else. Even in the NIH study, only 27 partners of the nearly 500 persons not taking treatment became infected over six years. What if the gay community comes to believe that treatment provides the best firewall against infection? Will guys be less likely to use condoms? Is the pill bottle a more effective condom? Pills can’t help when nearly ten percent of all people newly infected had caught HIV from someone else who was himself also just infected. During this early phase, the tests often can’t detect HIV. Here’s a scarier reason not to count on someone else’s medicines to protect you: it’s easier to verify that a guy is wearing a condom right now than to prove he has taken his medicines all week. What if a horny guy just tells you that he’s on treatment? Medications should be dispensed primarily to benefit people living with a disease, not packaged in a rationale to defend the rest of us from their illness. Of course, there will always be slipups: popped condoms and missed doses. That’s why neither condoms nor medicines alone will prevent every infection. We need treatment and prevention, not treatment as prevention. H
ment can truly stop the virus from spreading, then shouldn’t it be “forced” on people living with HIV, whether it adds years to their lives or not? Is treatment supposed to benefit the person living with HIV, or protect the person who might have sex with you? Unfortunately, very early treatment for the sake of prevention might cause people to “burn through” the best medicines early in their infection, leaving nothing to fall back on when their immune prognosis becomes dire. This would consign those living with HIV to additional years living with complications, and possibly a shorter life expectancy, all in the name of protecting others. Public health officials do impose treatment for medical conditions such as multi-drug resistant tuberculosis, which can is passed to others through casual contact. But HIV is not that sort of disease. It transmits only through specific, intimate contacts (unprotected sex, sharing needles, nursing babies, rare hospital mistakes). So uninfected people can consciously protect themselves from HIV. In fact, the most important step to prevent the spread of HIV is simply getting people tested. The vast majority of diagnosed people take steps to protect their partners. Diagnosed people living with HIV have just a one-to-two percent chance of passing their virus each year, and that number is driven up by a few

in order to streamline the permitting process. “If you come in,” said Shafran, “you will already notice that permits are no longer taken in the lobby of the office but now you come in, sit down with a permit person and get their undivided attention. This guarantees you will get the correct information.” She referred to this as a one-on-one permitting process where the entire process centers on the person requesting the permit. Another change will be who will review and inspect the building projects. Currently, Broward County handles the inspections for the city but the city plans to hire a private business to handle the inspections in the near future. Shafran feels this will improve customer service and expedite the process. She says that the new department will not only be a regulatory agency, but a customer service agency and they “will look for ways to say ‘yes’ more often instead of just saying ‘no’.” Shafran is also working on online permitting which will automate both the internal and external functions of the permitting process, which is currently done manually within the office. The new system will allow applying for the permit online, pay the fees, schedule inspections, check on the status of claims and the ability to make sure that any property a prospective buyer is looking to purchase has been properly permitted in the past. A new permitting process will also be added which Shafran is referring to as “Walk-In Tuesday,” which is for smaller
property improvement projects which can be handled by the property owner such as putting up a fence. If the permit application is submitted by 10 a.m. on a Tuesday morning, the permit will, in most cases, be issued that same afternoon. Shafran added that if anyone knows of any new business that is interested in locating in Wilton Manors, she will personally walk the new business owner through the permitting process and assist in any way she can from start to finish. She said the city will now be more proactive in attracting new businesses to the city. Krishan Manners is President of Wilton Manors Main Street, a nine-year old organization whose goal is to “create an environment on Wilton Drive where commerce, art and housing enthusiastically coexist and provide mutual nourishment.” Manners referred to his “Three-P Plan” for the city, which stands for “permitting, promotion and parking”. He commended Shafran for the work she has already done in improving the permitting process. In marketing and promotion of Wilton Manors, Manners referred to the organization’s two lane initiative project which was presented early last year. This project requires the city to obtain ownership of Wilton Drive (a/k/a State Road 811) from the State of Florida, changing the traffic lanes from four to two and, using the additional road space, add 112 additional parking spaces in front of the various businesses. The project will take place in stages, with the first stage being
restriping the road which will cost approximately $144,000, plus the costs of taking over control of Wilton Drive from the state. Main Street will also now take a more active role in promoting the businesses on The Drive and to work with the IGLTA and the Rainbow Business Coalition in promoting the city. Manners also stated that, though he cannot tell landlords of the property on The Drive how to handle their businesses, he did request that, at least during these difficult times, landlords limit rent increases. Manners said that some of the neighboring cities are trying to lure businesses away from Wilton Manors to their own cities due to lower rents to tenants. Main Street will also be offering business seminars to business owners with experts speaking on various topics. “I think working together,” said Manners, “we can create a marketing environment that will benefit everyone.” Celeste Ellich, President of the Wilton Manors Business Association, said that WMBA is working closely with other organizations to turn the city around. WMBA has been around for 22 years and has a goal to attract more and varied businesses to the city. “One thing that has been lacking in the city,” said Ellich, “is a master calendar,” creating a problem with different organizations holding major events on the same date and time. She said that Main Street will handle a master calendar so that all organizations can plan accordingly without conflicts. “We are all trying to work together to make the
city better.” WMBA publishes a directory of the city’s businesses twice a year, which are distributed throughout the city. Reece Darham, chair of the Rainbow Business Coalition, a year-and-a-half old organization of LGBT businesses, spoke on the importance of last week’s IGLTA convention held in the city. RBC sponsored two major events including a night time concert which attracted 2,000 people. Darham announced that the RBC and the IGLTA now have a close working relationship in regards to increasing tourism and the tourist dollar to Wilton Manors. He thanked all those involved in making the events a huge success. RGB will also be working now with the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau in putting together a welcome guide for LGBT visitors to Broward County.H

Real Estate; A Buyers or Sellers Market?
By RICK GIBSON
We appear to be very fortunate here in Broward County compared to the rest of the United States. One reason (aside from the weather) is there is no question our real estate market is on the “mend,” and quickly. Similar to almost any product, including the stock market, most things change in “cycles” of “ups and downs”. When the real estate market is “up” (meaning prices), then sellers are happiest and are able to get higher prices because there is more “demand” than there is “supply” (more people wanting to buy than there are properties available). The bad news for those sellers in this situation is when they sell they often cannot afford to buy anything else. When supply is flooding the market, as it has been with foreclosures and short sales in the past few years, prices drop as a result and that is considered more of an opportunity for buyers than sellers, so is considered a “buyer’s market”. This is to me a very interesting time in our history and in our market. We currently, in my opinion, are in the rare time of being in both a buyer’s and a seller’s market … this will not last. The reason we have both at the same time is a little complex, but many things in our economy have contributed to this status. The number of foreclosures seems to be slowing down, short sales are speeding up (and becoming more efficient), and overall inventory is down considerably. There are not nearly as many listings (especially good ones) as there were a year ago or six months ago. So, for sellers with a great property and a realistic price, this is both an excellent time to sell their property and to buy another one. Buyers who are waiting for the “bottom” are missing out, and I predict going to be very frustrated with themselves as they start to see less choices and higher prices. If you are considering a change and wish to trade “up” (buy the waterfront home of your dreams, or a larger home, etc.), “down-size” (realizing that you cannot use 7 toilets at a time), or invest, this is the best time I have ever seen to do so. If you are content in your home or property and it is worth what you feel it should be relative to what your mortgage may be if you have one, then maybe you should do absolutely nothing. If you do not like your property and cannot afford it, that’s easy. Contact a Certified Distressed Property Expert and/
or your accountant right away. If you are an investor, it may make sense to sell your property for less than you thought you would, only in order to buy other properties now while you can, for less than you will ever be able to again. You end up ahead potentially if you do it right. In these cases, contact an investment specialist and, as always, keep your accountant’s advice close to you. In times of tremendous economic change like we are experiencing now, there are incredible opportunities but to “freeze” up (do nothing) because we do not understand something could be a mistake. Reach out to someone you trust and get some sound advice so you can make your lives and those around you the best they can possibly be. Real estate is not really about properties but the people who live in the properties, and their happiness and well-being. Focusing on the people, including yourself, will usually guide you to take action and not “settle” for mediocrity when you deserve better. H

A Beginner's Guide to Orlando Gay Days Is this your first year at Orlando's Gay Days festival? If it is, you're in for a fabulous journey, but you're going to need a road map to navigate your way through this wonderland of gay vacation delights. The Beginner's Guide includes information for both men and women coming to Gay Days. It is also a great resource even if you are a regular attendee since Gay Days grows each year. Some people come to Orlando during Gay Days just to enjoy the company of 150,000+ other gays and lesbians, but most are looking to fill their itineraries with fun, fun, fun! Be sure to check a complete Calendar of Events on www.gaydays.com since only the highlights are represented here. This guide describes the major categories of events, tell you how to get tickets, and give you some ideas about transportation.
Theme Park Visits The Gay Days festival started with a theme park visit, and theme park visits remain one of the most popular Gay Days activities. Always the first Saturday in June, Gay Day in the Magic Kingdom (at Walt Disney World) is still the signature event of the week. An estimated 50,000 red-shirted Gay Days attendees pack Walt Disney World's original park on that 1st Saturday in June. The 3 o'clock parade down Main Street always draws an unforgettable "sea of red" that can be seen from one end of the park to the other. Many Gay Days vacationers also like to plan some time to visit Disney's other parks (Animal Kingdom, Epcot, and Disney's Hollywood Studios). • Theme park tickets will be available on www.gaydays.com • Multi-day tickets are often a great idea if you plan on visiting more than one park, or visiting all the Disney parks during your stay. • None of the "gay days" are official park events and no special tickets are required.
Disney Theme Parks • For theme park transportation, www.gaydays.com is again offering a Host Hotel (an all-gay resort experience!) at the Gay Days Host Hotel with free transportation to Disney and other attractions. • If you are staying in another area of town, check with your hotel about scheduled transportation to theme parks. • Catch a cab, during Gay Days; they are plentiful, and there are plenty of people to share with if you stay at one of the host or co-host hotels. • Downtown Orlando and area night clubs – These are located about 10 miles from the tourist area. Shuttle or taxi transportation can be arranged from any attraction-area hotel. Check with the guest services desk.
Big, Big Events Although it all began with a daytime trip to Disney World, Gay Days has inspired and nurtured some of the largest and most incredible events & parties in the world. With some of the most imaginative and innovative venues found anywhere, Orlando's Gay Days has an unbeatable combination of attractions, events, and parties to help create a magical dream of a vacation week. From the tropical wonderland of the Gay Days Host Hotel, to the thrill rides of The Magic Kingdom, you're sure to find an event that will amaze and delight you. • Tickets to attractions, plays, pool parties, and dance parties are available in advance online from www.gaydays.com Ticket Booth. Many of these are available exclusively at www.gaydays.com and sales are already brisk. • During the event, www.gaydays.com will operate a Ticket and Merchandise Center at the Gay Days Host Hotel. Be forewarned however, events may sell out in advance! • Cash and credit cards are accepted at the Gay Days Ticket and Merchandise Center during the week at the Gay Days Host Hotel. • Designated days at attractions held at WDW venues: Disney's parks are easily accessed by cab or hotel shuttle. Be sure to check shuttle times as the park hours might be outside regular shuttle hours. • Also consider renting a car, but be sure to have a designated driver if you plan on drinking. We want everyone to have a safe Gay Days.
Hotel Events Pool Parties – Orlando is the perfect place to spend your days soaking up the hot sun and hot scenery around a sparkling hotel swimming pool. This low-stress treat gets even better when you're surrounded by hundreds of GUYS and GALS in Speedos and bikinis, sipping umbrella drinks and grooving to the sounds of some of the world's best known DJs! Pool parties will be held Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the Gay Days Host Hotel. Tickets are required for these pool events if you aren't registered through www.gaydays.com as a hotel guest. The Gay Days Expo –growing since it was first held in 1999 – will be bigger and better again this year at the Gay Days Host Hotel. This event is free and open to the public with a wide variety of vendors, food, fun, and the Gay Days Ticket and Merchandise Center. Details are available at www.gaydaysexpo.com. The Expo will be open from Thursday through Sunday. Everybody loves this one!

The Couple That Sings Together Stays Together Florida’s Best Loved Cabaret Couple By ALEX VAUGHN Tony and Gloria are a much loved, and revered cabaret husband and wife team that have been a greatly loved fixture within the gay community for many years. The Agenda caught up with them to find out how they stay relevant and why they love working in the community. You have had amazing careers, please tell the Agenda readers a bit about your backgrounds. Tony and I have both had long careers in different musical backgrounds. Tony started in jazz playing with big bands touring the country and small Jazz ensembles in NYC. Gloria started in the church singing with her sisters and moved on to pop and contemporary and Jazz since working with Tony. What brought you and kept you here? We moved here after a few years working in Key West along with many of our friends. We’ve stayed because we feel comfortable and safe. You have remained ever popular here in Wilton Manors. How do you maintain your following?
By trying to always expand our repertoire and please our audience. What would you say has been the highlight of your time here? Meeting and becoming close friends with the great composer Murray Grand. Guess Who I Saw Today? is his most wellknown composition, but he has composed over 800 songs Any cringe moments? Sure, when we’re playing outdoors at Festivals and it starts to lightning. If you weren’t doing your act what would you do instead? Gloria would draw and paint and Tony would teach guitar and play and practice and play and practice. You clearly support the gay community. How do you feel you help the community? We have played and volunteered at numerous events and charity functions here and in Key West. How do you feel attitudes towards the community are changing?
We are seeing a more diverse audience from the US and all over the world. What are the advantages of working within the gay community? We love that people here appreciate and are enthusiastic about music, culture and the arts. What disadvantages do you feel there are here? It’s starting to become expensive. What do you have planned for the future? What exciting things can we look forward to from you both? We are in the process of working on a new CD of all original material; Gloria is preparing for a show of her artwork.H
Tony & Gloria’s Weekly Live Schedule: @ Thursdays and Saturdays from 7-11 at Tropics, Friday 6-9 at Dudes, Sundays 5-7 at Lips.

GLBT WeHo + 9021OMG L.A. • Part 2 By PAUL RUBIO was completely content to have kept a low profile my first night back in West Hollywood. I definitely wanted to save my “mojo” for the mandatory Abbey weekend marathon (drinks and eye candy Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon), plus I had totally gorged on dinner and could barely move after a five-course extravaganza at The Belvedere at The Peninsula Beverly Hills ( w w w. p e n i n s u l a . c o m / b e l v e d e r e , 310.788.2306). The Belvedere has been a staple in the L.A. dining scene since the early nineties, serving eclectic, innovative, and flavorful cuisine and receiving a long list of awards for its culinary ingenuity. The service here is impeccable. Career waiters and waitresses provide only the best service. Even the bus boys are refined and professional. And the food? Nothing less than spectacular. Each quality ingredient stimulates the senses, almost mocking the U.S. foodie revolution in which grease and bastardizing sauces have restructured the American conception of “flavor.” So what did I eat? Well to start: the “Sautéed New Zealand Langoustines” with Chanterelle Mushrooms and Spinach, Russian Fingerling Potato Purée, Langoustine Reduction. Next, “Dungeness Crab Chowder” with Carrots, Basil and Dungeness Crab Soufflé; followed by “Golden, Red, and Chioggia Beet Salad” with Tangerines, Honey, Crispy Goat Cheese Pockets, Roasted Almonds and Saba. And for the main course, “Slow Roasted Scottish Loch Duart River Salmon” under Sundried Tomato-Yogurt Glaze with Chick Pea Fritter, Fiddlehead Ferns and Espelette Pepper Broth. So, really. Who could party after a meal like that? Well, it was now time to work off those zillions of calories, and start my day

bright and early with a two-hour hardcore personal training session at The Bunker (www.beverlyhillsweightlosscenter. com, 310.860.0909), a private, innovative workout studio in Beverly Hills. Trainer Adam Ernster may be easy on the eyes, but he’s relentless when it comes to his tailored workouts and helping his A- to D-List clients achieve their goals. Adam’s “paparazzi- proof ” clandestine studio makes him a favorite for celebs training for intense roles – like Ben Affleck in The Town, Bruce Willis for Die Hard 4 and Sylvester Stallone for Rambo 4. I admit that I was there for a private vanity party – to treat myself to the gospel of a true fitness guru and learn a fabulous workout routine to fit my crazy travel schedule. Adam left me delightfully crippled from our in-house session and all the wiser for keeping the body beautiful with the most random of objects in hotel rooms around the world! After my workout, I ventured to the Spa Montage (www.spamontage.com, 310.860.7840) to relax the muscles I had so recently abused! I was scheduled for the signature “Surrender Experience,”
which basically means that a highly trained “Surrender Therapist” creates a bespoke treatment based on personal preferences. I arrived an hour early to have the full spa experience and to relax in the co-ed mineral pool and enjoy a bit of time in the steam room. I wanted to treat myself to a deep tissue and, no doubt, my therapist, Rachel, stimulated the deepest of deep tissue. Her hands were absolute magic. I’m talking possibly the best massage I’ve ever had in my t r ave l - w r i t i n g career. I was also so impressed with the greater hotel product of the Montage Beverly Hills that I decided to book myself a room there on Sunday night to end my weekend in 90210-style. By early evening, I made my way back to The Bunker • www.beverlyhillsweightlosscenter.com Rodeo Drive for

The color coordinated upstairs private collection is displayed a like masterpiece of contemporary art – even the fresh flowers of these hyper-organized thematic closets match the intended color palate. Throughout his store and window displays, the dearly departed Mr. Bijan pays homage to the myriad countries and world leaders who have shopped at the House of Bijan. I was so caught up in the haute couture and perfume-bottle bling that I lost complete track of time during my designated hour. But, alas, the weekend had officially started. I was parched and need a drink! I had a big alcohol-infused night ahead. First up: “O” Lounge, followed by a stroll down Santa Monica and then drinks, boys, drinks, boys, boys, drinks and more drinks at the Abbey. (www.abbeyfoodandbar.com, 310.2898410). H

Honoring Americans in the Military at Home By MICHAEL FRENCH
Memorial Day has traditionally been a day of remembering Americans in the Armed Forces. Whether they served, are currently enlisted or lost their lives during the wars in which the United States has been involved, this is the day our country has officially dedicated with acknowledgment, gratitude, and in memory to those Americans who have served and protected their country. Every one of our lives has been touched in some way by the contributions our fellow Americans in the Armed Forces have made to the United States. Even if you don’t have a relative or friend who is serving or has served in the military, you
jean’s kitchen
probably know someone who does. Dare to imagine what our country would be like. Would we even exist today without the sacrifices and service Americans in the Armed Forces have given to their country when she has needed them to serve. Are you able to even fathom the horrors, hardships and heartache many of these people must endure? Even the most realistic Hollywood production cannot truly “put” you in the “shoes” of our men and women in the Armed Forces. Dad served in the Marines during the Korean War. He was the only survivor of his platoon, and suffered what we now call “post traumatic syndrome” until the day he died. My father was awarded the Purple Heart medal for his bravery and service to his country. Anytime the phone rang, with the pop of a balloon or the snap of a firecracker, he would jump. As children, we learned to tell our friends never to call at dinner time because if the phone rang during dinner, my father would jump and his hands would lift the table, catapulting the meal my mother just cooked all over the place. We didn’t understand then that something so dark happened to my dad to cause this reaction. He did not talk about the war; all he did was give me pictures to look at that he took while there. My father said, “The only people who are
Velouté
Velouté sauce is one of the original “mother sauces” of classic French cuisine. It is also my soup every day @ “Le Patio” and a lot of you ask me “What is a Velouté”? Despite the fancy sounding name, Velouté is actually just a white sauce that is usually stock-based and thickened with a white roux. The word Velouté is French from “Velour”, which means “Velvet.” As its name implies, a correctly made velouté will have a smooth and velvety texture. The ingredients for a velouté sauce are butter, flour and a light stock. The type of stock used will depend on the dish being created. Although chefs usually make velouté with chicken, veal or fish, some cooks also use beef, ham or bouillon. This sauce is commonly referred to by the type of stock that was used in the recipe, such as a chicken velouté or a fish velouté. I use only olive oil and fresh herbs in my velouté. Then, it’s pureed in a food processer and looks, feels and tastes for all the world like a creamy soup, but can contain as low as zero fat as often as not. Start out with minced onions tenderly simmered in extra virgin olive oil, stir in a little flour to make the roux that will lightly thicken the soup, and cook until the oil and flour are foaming nicely. Then, moisten with a stock or milk or
wine (depending on your major ingredient) and simmer a few minutes more. That’s the traditional base for a myriad of soups, be they based on chicken, mushrooms, artichokes, broccoli – or even fish. When making vegetable soups, don’t be too lavish with chicken stock, particularly canned stock. If it is too strong, you’ll muffle the taste of vegetables like broccoli or zucchini; so, no rules here – trust your own judgment of taste. You are the chef.H

quick to want war, are the ones who have never gone.” My sister Joanne served in the Air Force, stationed in England, interpreting Soviet codes coming from over the Arctic Circle. There were so many other things an 18 year old girl could have chosen. It doesn’t matter what your political views are regarding war. Regardless of what they might be, be charitable by giving of yourself, and give thanks to your fellow Americans for the generosity they have shown defending our country. There are many ways to show your “Thanks.” Some are: visiting cemeteries and placing flags or flowers on the graves of our fallen heroes, flying the U.S. Flag at half-staff until noon, flying the 'POW/MIA Flag' or participating in a "National Moment of Remembrance" at 3 p.m. to pause and think upon the true meaning of the day. Make sure you call someone you know who served to personally say “Thank You”. Send a thank you note to a veteran who is a complete stranger! Yes, Memorial Day is a salute to our Armed Forces. It is also the traditional first day of the summer season. Have a BBQ at home and make sure the US flag is there, too. Don’t lose focus of the most important reason for the party! There are countless Memorial Day party ideas
on the web. Cook up the iconic American BBQ “cuisine” of hot dogs, burgers, corn on the cob and potato salad in new, health conscious and inventive ways. During the festivities, ask everyone to pause for a moment, raise that cocktail high and give a hearty, sincere thanks for everything our fellow Americans in the military have done, sacrificed and preserved for us. This Memorial Day, give a special thanks to the brave Navy Seals! The next time you are having fun sipping that martini enjoying the joie de vie, take a moment and toast with gratitude that man or woman dodging bullets on the other side of the world. Thanks Dad! Thanks Joanne!H

Shaken or Stirred?
The Classiest Classic Cocktails
years, the martini has become one of the best-known mixed alcoholic beverages. H. L. Mencken called the martini “the only American invention as perfect as the sonnet”and E.B. White called it “the elixir of quietude”.
By ALEX VAUGHN We all love a good cocktail, whatever your spirit of choice there is a cocktail that makes it stylish, fashionable and utterly delicious. I personally am a Gin drinker, ‘Mother’s Ruin’ apparently. Gin is having a revival as is the perfect Gin Martini. The Martini is by far one of the most popular cocktails to have stood the test of time, evolving into fancy versions with different ingredients predominantly Vodka based; Apple, peach, coffee, chocolate, etc. Some believe in 1862 it came from the Martinez Hotel in San Francisco. Cocktails were originally a mixture of spirits, sugar, water, and bitters. The word has come to mean almost any mixed drink that contains alcohol. A cocktail today usually contains one or more kinds of spirit and one or more mixers, such as soda or fruit juice. Additional ingredients may be ice, sugar, honey, milk, cream, and various herbs. The first “cocktail party” ever thrown was allegedly by Mrs. Julius S. Walsh Jr. of St. Louis, Missouri, in May 1917. Mrs. Walsh invited 50 guests to her home at noon on a Sunday. The party lasted an hour, until lunch was served at 1 pm. The site of this first cocktail party still
stands. In 1924, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. Louis bought the Walsh mansion at 4510 Lindell Boulevard, and it has served as the local archbishop’s residence ever since. So what makes a good cocktail? Mixologists from across the globe have competed and argued, developed and questioned. So for this cocktail feature, let’s look at the best classic cocktails, those that really stood the test of time. Bloody Mary – a popular cocktail containing vodka, tomato juice, and usually other spices or flavorings such as Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce, beef consomme or bouillon, horseradish, celery, olive, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, lemon juice, and celery salt. It has been called “the world’s most complex cocktail. The Gin Martini – a cocktail made with gin and vermouth, and garnished with an olive or a lemon twist. It can be served Dirty, Dry, Sweet Shaken or Stirred. Over the
Manhattan – a cocktail made with whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters. The cocktail is often stirred with ice and strained into a cocktail glass, where it is garnished with a Maraschino cherry with a stem. Bellini – a long drink cocktail that originated in Venice. It is a mixture of sparkling wine (traditionally Prosecco) and peach puree often served at celebrations. It is one of Italy’s most popular cocktails. Served in a champagne Flute. Old Fashioned – a type of cocktail made by muddling dissolved sugar with bitters then adding alcohol (such as jenever, whiskey or brandy) and a twist of citrus rind. The name references the combination’s age: it is possibly the first drink to be called a cocktail. Cosmopolitan – a cocktail made with vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice, and freshly squeezed lime juice or sweetened lime juice. Informally, it is referred to as a Cosmo. The cosmopolitan gained popularity in the 1990s. It was further popularized among young
FLORIDAAGENDA.COM
women by its frequent mention on Sex and the City. Rusty Nail – made by mixing Drambuie and Scotch Whisky. Many prefer less Drambuie to decrease the sweetness of the drink. Scotch Whisky has a fairly biting and hot taste that is counterbalanced by the honeyed, herbal overtones of the Drambuie. A Rusty Nail can be served in an old- fashioned glass on the rocks, neat, or “up” in a stemmed glass. Long Island Iced Tea – The potent highball cocktail is made with, among other ingredients, vodka, gin, tequila, and rum. A popular version mixes equal parts vodka, gin, tequila, rum, and triple sec with 11⁄2 parts sour mix and a splash of cola. Most variants use equal parts of the main liquors but include a smaller amount of triple sec (or other orange-flavored liqueur). Close variants often replace the sour mix with lemon juice, replace the cola with actual iced tea, or add white creme de menthe; however, most variants do not include any tea, despite the name of the drink.H

Two Men, One Bed, Different Hopes By WARREN DAY Some play titles are more like definitions than labels, such as Tony Kushner’s new one, The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures (wow, try getting that on the typical marquee), and that’s also true of another play being performed now at Rising Action Theatre in Fort Lauderdale. Entitled Two Boys in Bed on a Cold Winter’s Night, you can’t say you don’t know the premise before “you pays your money.” Written by James Edwin Parker, the play happens in real time, meaning there’re no jumps in the timeline and no intermission to break up the flow. It takes place early on a January morning in 1987 in a walk-up apartment in NYC’s Greenwich Village, for which Christopher Michaels has designed a very effective set. Those two boys in the title (they’re 38, so they’re really not boys) meet for the first time the night before at The Ninth Circle gay bar and, by both their accounts, had some great sex; but now it’s the hour preceding dawn and one of them wants to talk and bare his soul. The other doesn’t. One confuses a great hook-up with a promissory note for the future, while the other just wants to have some more sex and be gone. They went home
together, but not with the same purpose. The strength of that dramatic situation is also its weakness. It’s all so familiar, or as Yogi Berra said, “It’s déjà vu all over again.” That familiarity, the chance to see a portion of your life on the stage, will be enough for many people, but for others they may wish the playwright had delved deeper with some fresh and unexpected insights, or at least found more humor in such a fretful encounter. Like most onenight stands, it isn’t as satisfying afterwards as it may have appeared at the moment. The director, Jerry Jensen, keeps the two actors moving and varies the composition within a small space and a tight timeframe, and both Angel Perez and Nigel Revenge seem to understand and fit their parts, although for 1987 the tattoos of one actor are probably more appropriate for the skin of the other character. The play does contain full frontal nudity. What you have are two strangers – one who appears rather content with himself and is perpetually horny, while the other is filled with unrelenting loneliness and unfulfilled connections, the neediness of that character overwhelming the other. In the movie Broadcast News, Albert Brooks says, “wouldn’t this be a great world if desperation made us more attractive.” But alas, it never does.H

Why Should You Be Concerned About Hedwig and His/Her Angry Inch? By WARREN DAY All musicals, by their very nature, are improbable. When is the last time you broke into song with full orchestration just because you pronounced a sentence correctly, or because you spotted a stranger across a crowded room? Okay, maybe that latter, but you see my point. Hedwig and the Angry Inch, as presented currently at the Empire Stage Theater in Fort Lauderdale, has more improbables than a block of Broadway musicals. First of all, does it seem like a probable idea to do a musical about an East German boy who gets a shaking surgeon when he goes for a sex change operation? And how about staging the whole thing like a glam rock performance at some American underground club next to where his protégé is playing to a packed amphitheater? In addition, have it undergirded by a Greek myth, plus some connection to a discarded Gospel, while throwing in a male character playing a female – and a female character playing a male – and you get a general idea of how the improbables pile up. And the improbables extend to this particular production itself, because what sane director and producer would
attempt to do a show in Fort Lauderdale that required finding a local actor who can sing and perform like a seasoned club act, play an electronic keyboard, convey emotions from A to Z, and do all of that with a German accent in full glam drag while prancing around in Joan-Crawford-fuck-me pumps? And also find four believable rock musicians, one of whom has to sing beautifully and cross-dress. It ain’t like casting “The Sunshine Boys.” And yet, what might be the biggest improbability is to pull all of this off in a highly effective and professional manner that will engage anyone who is open to a different kind of theater experience. Infinite Abyss Productions is responsible for this staging, as they were in 2010 for the excellent Stop Kiss” As in that play, the director Jeffrey D. Holmes demonstrates a talent for getting an exceptional and emotionally true performance from his lead actor. This presentation would fall flatter than that proverbial pancake if Joe Harter as Hedwig wasn’t multi-talented and able to deliver a multi-layered performance. That Greek myth can be found in
Plato's Symposium and says there were three sexes originally – children of the moon (a man and woman combined), children of the earth (two women) and children of the sun (two men). Angry gods divided them, thus creating heterosexuality, and female and male homosexuality. Ever since, we’ve felt incomplete and been longing for our other half. This kind of Greek dualism permeates this production; it’s even reflected in the graphic that producer Erynn Dalton picked for the program cover. And the fact that feelings of dual natures are felt
by many people partly explains the power and the appeal of this improbable musical that’s been performed in hundreds of places around the world. We’re lucky to have a good production of it here in South Florida.H

Stoke Your Furnace! Metabolic Rates... Burn it up! Ever wonder why some people can eat anything and never get fat? You, on the other hand, gobble a few extra carbs and the next day you are big as a whale. It all has to do with your metabolism. Metabolism refers to the number of calories you burn in everyday functions: eating, working out, having sex, etc. Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is an estimate of the number of calories you burn over a 24 hour period of time if you were laying down and resting but not sleeping. Your actual metabolic rate is your BMR plus the calorie cost of all the activities you engage in throughout the day. Guys who are fit and active have a higher BMR than those who are sedentary. The former carry more lean muscle and lean muscle burns more calories all the time. Doing regular cardio also improves your cardio-vascular system and builds the endurance you need to stay active. With these facts in mind, it’s clear that all of us can rev up that metabolism and fire up the BMR. Here’s how: Resistance Training: When you exercise, your muscles use up a lot of energy, even after your training session. On the other hand, body fat is sluggish, inactive and programmed to use a minimal amount of calories; its role is to insulate

you and to act as a stock room for your future energy supply. Thus, the more fat you carry, the lower your BMR. Conversely, the more muscle you have, the higher your BMR. Although you cannot change your genetic makeup, you do have the ability to build muscle, which gives you at least some control over your metabolism. Studies show that weight trained individuals have BMRs that are 10% to 25% higher compared to sedentary people. In fact, one estimate is for every pound of muscle you add, you burn anywhere from 50-90 more calories at rest per day. So, by adding 10 pounds of muscle over the course of a year, your BMR could be elevated somewhere between 500-900 calories extra per day! Aerobic Exercise: Aerobic exercise does not, per se, build lean muscle and therefore it won’t affect your BMR like weight training. That said, remember that cardiovascular exercise such as running, cycling and stair stepping burns many more calories during the session when compared with pumping iron. A typical 30 minute aerobic exercise session may burn 300-500 calories, while for the same period in a traditional weight lifting work out, you may burn half that amount.
Ideally, to maximize the greatest increases in metabolism – and thus calorie expenditure – you need to include both cardio and weight training in your training regimen. Weight training builds quality muscle, and aerobic activity improves the heart and lungs. Your Eating Habits: You can actually raise your BMR and improve the look of your physique by the foods you eat. Research has found that a protein rich meal is greater than a high carb meal, elevating BMR higher and longer after the meal. Carbohydrates are essential for energy, but eating too many can make you fat in one hell of a hurry. High fat meals and snacks, on the other hand can actually lower your BMR and leave you sluggish and even more hungry in the long run. Yes, you can actually stoke that inner fire. Eat more protein, more frequently throughout the day. Do your cardio regularly, at least 3 times a week for thirty to forty strong solid minutes. Get to the gym and hit the weights a few times a week and you’ll be smoking hot
by summertime. For more information about BMR and how to tabulate it, send me an email. H

Cliff Dunn 12th year of the summer Pride highlight. The producers and city officials met this Tuesday at Wilton Manors’ Hagen Park in a preliminary Town Hall meeting to share their vision with residents and supporters for the 2011 production, being held Sunday, June 19. The producers say that the event has been reenvisioned for 2011, with a 4 - 9 p.m. festival component, a parade beginning at 6:30 p.m. and entertainment beginning at 7:30pm, all centered on Wilton Drive. This year’s Grand Marshals will be MSNBC News Anchor Thomas Roberts and his partner Patrick Abner. Roberts, an award-winning journalist, anchors MSNBC Live on weekdays at 11 a.m. Another new addition to the 2011 event is the participation of Luminary Couples in the parade, long-term partners who “will be honored at this year’s gathering for their courage and dedication,” according to event producer Ellen Wedner. “The first 10 couples, together 20-plus years, who reach out to us will be known as the Founding Luminary Couples, and will be invited to ride in the parade. Any couple having a 10-plus year relationship is invited to apply to walk or ride in the Luminary section of the parade as well.” 20-plus years? Open for Business feels special if someone holds the door open on the way out of the restroom at Torpedo.

Stonewall Wilton Manors: Still Flying the Flag Readers may recall that last year’s Stonewall Street Festival ended with a whimper rather than a bang following its organizing committee’s admission that they were flat broke following June 2010’s event in Wilton Manors. Pride of Greater Fort Lauderdale officers and board members reported a net loss of over $30,000 after the dust settled, with unpaid expenses for vendors, law enforcement and other creditors. This year, the standard for the seminal street festival has been picked up by Wedner and Friends Events, which is producing a more streamlined version for the
