Travel Organization Deem Convention a Huge Success WILTON MANORS, FL – The International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA) finished their 2011 convention in Ft. Lauderdale/Wilton Manors in what the organization refers to as being a huge success. IGLTA President and CEO John Tanzella, after returning from a U.S. Travel Association Pow Wow event which included tour operators, travel media, hotels and others involved in the travel industry, said that he couldn’t be more pleased with the results. The annual convention, with portions being held in both Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors, drew 507 delegates from 35 countries, coming from as far as South Africa and Australia to see what the Greater Fort Lauderdale area has to offer. And what was the impression Fort Lauderdale made on the delegates? “It was extremely positive,” said Tanzella. “In fact, many of the attendees said they wanted to

some of the more historical ways of reaching travelers. So, even if you’re a travel agency, you still might not have people walking into your travel agency the way they did in the ‘80s, but you can market your travel agency on places like Twitter and Facebook to draw clients and easily connect your clients with the marketplace.” Globally, it is estimated that gays and lesbians spend a total of $75-billion a year on everything from airlines and hotels to tours and complete vacation packages. Brazil, explained Tanzella, is extremely popular right now, as is New York City. He added that Capetown, South Africa, and

Tanzella reported that there was a special emphasis placed this year on using online marketing techniques. He stated that there were representatives from Trip Advisor and Google, along with other presenters, explaining new trends and how businesses, big and small, can reach gay and lesbian travelers. “Every year there seems to be more and more online marketing,” said Tanzella. “I think that LGBT travelers in particular tend to be more internet savvy, and so you need to reach them using the internet, social media, etc., to reach them versus

BERLIN, GERMANY – This June 5th will be the 30th anniversary of the disease we now call AIDS. It was on that date that the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta reported an unusual case of five gay Los Angeles men who were suffering from a strange form of pneumonia. Because of the connection with the gay men, the disease was originally referred to as GRIDS (Gay-Related Immune Deficiency Syndrome). At first, being diagnosed with AIDS was the equivalent of an immediate death sentence; however, through the last three decades various drugs and drug combinations (often referred to “drug cocktails”) allowed people living with the HIV/AIDS virus to lead a long and fruitful life, with the virus almost undetectable, as long as the patient continued to take the drugs. An actual “cure” for AIDS, however, has been elusive. Scientists have been study-

ing immunity to HIV since the disease was discovered 30 years ago, as it soon became apparent that a small percentage of people seemed to be naturally resistant. Now, after 30 years comes word of a patient who appears to be the first person in the world to have actually been cured of the disease. Nicknamed the “Berlin Patient,” he is Timothy Ray Brown, 45, originally from Seattle and currently lives in the San Francisco area. He first tested positive for HIV in 1995. Doctors believe they cured Brown’s HIV infection via a stem cell transplant that contained cells that were impervious to the HIV infection. While living in Berlin, Brown received a stem cell transplant back in 2007 as a treatment for his leukemia. Before the transplant, he received chemotherapy treat‘BERLIN PATIENT’ continues on Page 7

New Sunday Tradition is Born FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – The new Royal Palms Resort and Spa started their new Sunday T-dance last weekend, picking up where the likes of the Marlin Beach Hotel and the Club Caribbean Resort left off years ago. Both former locations perfected the Sunday T-dance, but have long since been demolished. Beach Place is where the former Marlin Beach once stood and the Harley Davidson dealership on N. Federal Highway is in the location of the former Club Caribbean. Both T-dance locations drew crowds from the tri-county area. Hundreds of people lined around the block to attend the first of what will become a weekly event. The Royal Palms Resort and Spa T-dance will be held every Sunday from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Royal Palms Resort & Spa, 717 Breakers Avenue near Fort Lauderdale Beach. Gay Activist Calls for End of Urban Weekend MIAMI BEACH, FL – South Beach gay activist Herb Sosa has called for end to South Beach’s Urban Weekend, calling the 10-year old hip-hop Memorial Day Weekend event a “war zone”. This year included an early Monday morning shooting leaving one person dead, four more wounded and three injured police officers, despite the heavier than normal police presence keeping an eye on the party-goers. Many South Beach residents are known to take a short Memorial Day Weekend vacation to Fort Lauderdale to avoid the annual event. In Sousa’s open letter to the Miami Beach City Commission, he wrote that the problem is the lack of respect the partiers have for the city. “There isn’t a residential street in South Beach not affected by tons of garbage, crime to our vehicles, excessive noise 24 hours a day, and simply a lack of respect for our community, citizens and property.” Sousa is the former executive director of the Miami Design Preservation League and the Art Deco Weekend Festival. Obama Issues Pride Month Proclamation President Barack Obama has issued a proclamation in time for June, which is traditionally considered LGBT Pride Month. In his proclamation, the President mentions the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act, legislation toward repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and his executive order implementing non-discrimination policies. He made no mention of the Defense of Marriage Act or marriage equality in the proclamation. His proclamation read: LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, AND TRANSGENDER PRIDE MONTH, 2011 BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA A PROCLAMATION The story of America's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community is the story of our fathers and sons, our mothers and daughters, and our friends and neighbors who continue the task of making our country a more perfect Union. This month also marks the 30th anniversary of the emergence of the HIV/ AIDS epidemic, which has had a profound impact on the LGBT community. Anti-Gay Minister Settles in Gay Sex Case DEKALB COUNTY, GA – Last September, Bishop Eddie Long stood before his congregation at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church a week after gay sex allegations surfaced between him and four teenage boys, and told members he was going to fight the allegations. But Long chose not to fight in court. Instead, he reached a settlement and paid off the four young men who accused the mega-church preacher of using his power to influence them into sexual relationships with him. Long did not address the allegations or the settlement from the pulpit, and details of the resolution have not been disclosed. H

GOP House Passes Defense Bill with Anti-Gay Amendments WASHINGTON, D.C. – Last week, the Republican-controlled House of Representative passed the 2012 fiscal year defense authorization bill, which included several anti-gay amendments intended to affect the repeal of the military’s gay ban and prevent same-sex marriages from taking place within military facilities and by military chaplains. Advocates of the defense spending bill do not expect the amendments to succeed in the Democratic-controlled U.S. Senate. The Washington Post reported that conservative organizations are threatening to sue unless the Senate adopts similar anti-gay measures. H

Study: More Countries Accepting Homosexuality CHICAGO, IL – According to a report by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, the vast majority of countries around the world have become more accepting of homosexuality, with the exception of Russia and other former socialist countries. The report examined 30 countries regarding their attitudes towards homosexuality and is based on five surveys conducted in different countries between 1988 and 2008. The study showed that the approval of homosexuality increased in 27 countries and decreased in only four: Cypress, Czech Republic, Latvia and Russia. The study also rated the top five most tolerant countries regarding homosexuality as the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, and Belgium. H

ments and total body irradiation that eradicated most of his immune cells, and received further immunosuppressive drugs to prevent his body from rejecting the stem cells. But these were no ordinary stem cells – a mutation found in just one percent of Caucasians in Northern and Western Europe causes CD4 cells to lack the CCR5 receptor, a receptor necessary for earlystage HIV to infect CD4 immune system cells. (People with this mutation are more immune to HIV infection.) Scientists believe the mutation arose in the Middle Ages; some experts have suggested it spread in response to the Black Plague, while others have pointed to smallpox as more likely. Survivors of that era developed a genetic mutation which has been passed down to their heirs called a “CCR5 delta-32 deletion”. Scientists believe those who have one copy of the CCR5 gene enjoy some resistance against HIV, but not total immunity. That seems to be the case in about 10 to 15 per cent of those descended from Northern Europeans. Those who inherit two copies of this so-called “immune gene,” one from each parent, seem to have strong immunity to HIV. That's the case in an estimated 1 per cent of people descended from Northern Europeans, with Swedes being the most likely candidates. It means today, if both of your parents have this mutation, your body lacks the “doorway” for HIV to enter. Brown says that he quit taking his HIV medication the day that he got the transplant and hasn’t had to take any since. Through the years since the transplant,

Brown’s progress had been reported in medical journals and other media outlets. The Wall Street Journal first reported the story on November 7, 2008, declaring that the patient “appears to have won the battle with AIDS”. The following month, the New York Times wrote, “the man has been free of the virus for 20 months”. Last December, the patient’s doctors reported in the peer-reviewed medical journal, Blood, that tests “strongly suggest that the cure of HIV has been achieved in this patient.” The various reports referred to the patient simply as the “Berlin Patient” and Brown’s personal identity had not been known until Brown himself made the revelation, claiming “I’m cured of HIV. I had HIV but I don’t anymore.” Brown is being studied closely by AIDS researchers in Northern California, where he now lives. Their goal is to try to replicate Brown’s reported success in other patients. As difficult as that might be, he represents new hope for an outright cure that wasn’t there before. Brown’s story does have some setbacks. Brown suffered some neurological problems that affected his motor skills; however, he is improving. Also, the same procedure had been previously tried on other patients who did not survive. Researchers warn that while Brown’s recovery is indisputable, it by no means indicates that a cure for AIDS has been discovered. The findings, however, open the door for further review and optimism in the frustrating battle that has raged against HIV/AIDS for three decades. There are a number of hurdles. For one

thing, some experts have cautioned that HIV could still be lurking somewhere in Brown's body and are referring to Brown’s treatment as being more of a “functional cure”. There's also the risk – and difficulty – of doing stem cell transplants, and the relative paucity of donors. Donating stem cells is a bit more invasive than a standard blood donation, and finding a good fit between donors and recipients isn't easy. AIDS pioneer scientist, Dr. Paul Volberding, cautioned, “The Berlin Patient is a fascinating story; it’s not one that can be generalized. You don’t want to go out and get a bone marrow transplant and the bone marrow transplants themselves carry a real risk of mortality.” But Volberding added, “He [Brown] hasn’t had a recurrence now for several years of the virus and that hasn’t happened before in our experience.” H “CONVENTION’ Continued from COVER

Tanzella credits much of this year’s success to the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau, Wilton Manors Mayor Gary Resnick and to the Rainbow Business Coalition. Broward County Mayor Sue Gunzburger was on hand to welcome the delegates and dignitaries from Washington, D.C., flew in to welcome the international delegates. Delta Airlines, the Brazilian airline TAM and the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau were huge sponsors, explained Tanzella, but they also had sponsorships from different regions in Brazil in preparation of next year’s convention. Tanzella also appreciated the support the IGLTA convention received from local businesses like the Sawgrass Mills Mall, The Manor and Tropics, but indicated that the support received from the Rainbow Business Coalition was huge. The IGLTA moved their international headquarters from Fort Lauderdale to N.E. 26 Street in Wilton Manors last August.H

FLORIDAAGENDA.COM

Let Them Entertain Us Last week, I was invited to a fantastic show at Tropics with Joe Posa as Joan Rivers (hilarious) and Scott Townsend as Cher who sang live just like the lady herself. The show was a riot; viper tongued one-liners, classic songs and a great atmosphere. After the show, I was chatting with my friend who happened to be the producer, Christopher L. Gjertsen, about how much I had enjoyed it and he explained he wanted to create an intimate cabaret feel. It worked, and it dawned on me for all the issues we have and the various concerns that could better the community, the one thing that we have down pat is entertainment! Since I have been in Florida, I have seen some of the most fantastic shows and, remarkably, what makes them special is, regardless of venue, each and every performer I have seen treat their audiences like Broadway theatre-goers each and every time. Without a doubt, the cabaret shows here – from both drag queens to the lovely ladies and gentleman such as Debra Hampton, Jennifer McClain and Tony and Gloria, just off the top of my head – are far from amateur; they are incredibly talented professionals who have stayed and stuck by the community because of the incredible vibe that exists here in terms of appreciating their talent and entertainment. If I were to list all of the fun cabaret acts I have seen in my time in Florida, I would undoubtedly forget someone and, for all my enjoyment, I don’t think I would want to be up against one of our beloved 6ft 5 drag queens in a dark alley! I will say this, though: South Florida has achieved a love and understanding for classic and contemporary shows that is worth celebrating. The vision I always had of the kind of shows you see in bars was a tragic one. Someone on stage trying their best to engage with an audience that just doesn’t care … you know a lot like that Elkie Brook’s song Pearl’s a Singer, singing songs for the lost and the lonely at a beer stained table. Amazingly, that isn’t the case here. The audience may not pay directly to

Alex Vaughn see the entertainer but, without a doubt, you can tell people have come to see them, to encourage them and I have no doubt that is why we have so many acts that have played and stayed with us here. I have had the privilege of interviewing a few of our beloved cabaret entertainers and asking them why they hadn’t gone on to make CD’s or tour or try out for a reality show and they all shrugged in a generally semi-interested way, saying basically they were happy where they were. I had always thought this a bit odd, as they are all remarkably talented. Doesn’t the fame fortune and bright lights call them? Then I made a real mistake and decided it must be a case of a big fish in a small pond – they could be stars here as it’s a relatively small area of the world, but the critique of millions would be a daunting prospect for anyone. I remember interviewing one of our resident entertainers who thought the idea of a reality show was absurd. I remember her saying, basically we get judged and scrutinized everyday why go on TV to have it done by millions! Watching the American Idol final the other day, I suddenly thought about the appeal of what I have seen here. Their

Letters to the Editor In response to “Was Williams’ Suicide an Internet Hoax”, featured in The Florida Agenda, October 28, 2010 http://floridaagenda.com/2010/10/28/waswilliams’-suicide-an-internet-hoax/ DEAR EDITOR, My name is Derick. (Daric R.) the person involved in the Terrel Williams scandal. I read your story in the Florida Agenda, and felt an enormous level of guilt for what I've done. The Terrel Williams death was entirely fake, and it is my fault. I was in a bad place, making horrible, horrible choices, and I regret them every day. I live with the guilt of knowing I hurt all kinds of people around the world with my actions. I committed the shameless act of spreading that story because I, at the time, didn't know right from wrong, and made the terrible choice of letting the media get a-hold of that story. I genuinely wish I could take back what I did, but I can't. I feel deep down in my heart apologizing to at least one person is the first step to becoming a better person. I am, from the bottom of my heart, deeply sorry to

shows are not just a four minute song belted out to shock America (though many of them have some pipes!), but a delight in jokes, songs and anecdotes, something you couldn’t convey to millions on a talent show and, quite frankly, wouldn’t want to. This is all the more special because their acts – their stories – are what make them so respected here. The simple fact is what they offer is either naturally suited to the community or tweaked to do so. If you have ever seen one of our entertainers, and I say ‘our’ because they are ours, then you can agree that the connection they ALL make with their audience is magical. I have heard many performers, local, national and global, say when they are on stage they come alive. The most magical thing I have seen here with the community is we support that, we revel in it as much as they do. More so than anywhere I have been, we appreciate what they do, not just with tips, but with requests, applause and, more importantly, with the love we show by making sure we go to their shows. This week I urge you to see someone. They are all incredible and pretty much any night of the week there is someone there to listen to, watch and be entertained by. I often say one of the things I miss most about London is the culture, namely the theatre, and only recently have I come to realize that we have here a different kind of theatre, one that is just a little bit more special. Intimate venues with talented performers who I genuinely believe come to entertain us because they want to. They respect, appreciate and enjoy being their most spectacular selves night after night within an arena in which they feel safe, understood and loved. We all want that ultimately, so go, get a cocktail, sit back and enjoy! Let them entertain you. Trust me, it’ll be as good for you as it is for them! H

DEAR EDITOR, Thanks for your enlightening column regarding gay office politics in the May 26 issue of the Agenda. First, let me be up front and say that I have a pretty good sense of humor about most things, am by far not a prude or easliy offended, and enjoy 'camping it up' as much as the next person. But at times, a fine line is crossed, especially in the workplace. Granted, it depends on the type of work environment. Workplace behavior at a gay bar/nightclub might not be appropriate in another setting. Many years ago, I had an opportunity to go work for a company that I felt would be good experience for my career path. It was pretty clear that my new boss was gay and I thought how great it would be to

have a manager that I could be comfortable around on a personal level. What started out as what I thought was some pretty low key harmless banter initiated by my manager, eventually turned in to full-scale sexual harassment. As is the case in most sexual harassment cases where a supervisor is involved, it boils down to the abuse of power and intimidation. When I made it clear that I objected to the behavior, it was just passed off as to me being oversensitive. Going through the proper channels, I brought it to the attention of Human Resources and they basically said that gay-on-gay sexual harassment was an oxymoron. Long story short, lawsuits were filed, depositions taken and legal wranglings went on forever. Just before we went to trial, my case was settled at mediation. If I had known then what I know now, I would have quit my job and just started my career over. The toll it took on me physically, mentally and emotionally was horrible. STEVE SCOTT

Five for the First Dating Do’s & Don’ts By THE OBSERVATIONIST After three years of being off the market, I am single again and it is freakin’ scary. Oh my goodness gracious, let me tell you that I was not ready for the world of singledom. While I have to admit that I never really had any “game” to begin with, I have come to realize that my sex appeal has degenerated to the point of embarrassing. I blame the recession for this happening if for no other reason that it seems the recession is the cause for everything that goes wrong nowadays. Why is that baby crying? The recession. How come I am losing my hair? The recession. Why am I not able to have a successful first date? DEFINITELY due to the recession. In an effort to get back into the dating pool (and with some metaphorical water wings), I have taken up trying to get advice from local experts, which I more commonly refer to as my slutty friends. While there is no way that I could ever keep up with them sexually if for no other reason that I simply do not have the time nor the energy between my pottery classes and river dance practice, they have reassured me that my busy schedule should not prohibit me from having a good first date. My skanktastic brothers have a few simple rules that I

need to follow to prevent my date from running away from the dinner table while screaming, “Make it stop talking! My ears are bleeding!” Rule #1: Brush your teeth. When my friends tell me about this rule, I am inclined to breathe into my hand and sniff. When my olfactory senses detect that something smells either like bad milk or good cheese, I realize that you can never have enough breath mints or gum or breath mints wrapped in gum. Rule #2: Keep it in your pants. For all the perverts out there, I would like to clarify that I am not talking about someone whipping it out in the middle of a nice Italian dinner (even though that would definitely make the date memorable). I’m talking about your cell phone. Modern dating etiquette requires you to pay more attention to your date than the goddam Scrabble puzzle in your pocket. Unless your date is more difficult to endure than that totally not funny comedy movie, Precious, please just leave the phone alone. Rule #3: Ask questions. I’ve been informed that I have a tendency to talk about myself too much. In my mind, I thought that doing so was a good thing because I think I’m a very interesting

person. My friends have informed me that I am actually quite uninteresting, and unless I try to feign the slightest interest in my date’s life by asking questions, I’m going to end up old and alone just like that crone Pamela Anderson. Rule #4: Be on time. Period. Rule #5: Be honest…but not too honest. Dropping too many truth-bombs is not gonna do anything but blow up in your face. When asked about your family life, maybe it’s better to hold off on telling your date about that horrible water skiing incident that left your mother grotesquely disfigured. Instead,

just say that you have, “A very loving family life with no judgments about people who may be missing 35% of their jaw.” Equipped with these five rules in mind, I might just be able to pull off a successful first date! Wish me luck because I know I’m gonna need it. H

NETWORKING

FLORIDAAGENDA.COM

Don’t Spread Negativity Words can shape how people view you. You never know who is listening. Negativity spreads so easily from one person to another. It's an uncontrollable virus that lives on and on. Networking is the last place you want to spread negativity. Networking is your moment to make the best impression, leaving your colleague interested and believing you are the best person in your field. Recently, I attended a networking event at a restaurant in Hollywood. I was standing near the bar and a Realtor® walked up and placed an order. A mix-up occurred and she got upset. She proceeded to be mean-spirited to the waitress. I found this very disturbing and had a difficult time focusing on the event. Here is a person looking to promote herself as an expert in her field and, without realizing it, she diminished herself by belittling another. Later, I did have a chance to let her know I could hear what she said to the waitress. She was very sorry for her behavior and apologized to me and the waitress. Watch what you say! Now, I would like to take this opportunity and clean up my own mishaps in a work environment and networking event. Last month, I felt I was put in a position that made me LOOK BAD. I decided to take action. I immediately called two people to get them on my side. I was reassured that I was jumping to conclusions and that it didn't make me

LOOK BAD. I turned and talked with two more people almost immediately. I even called the person who I felt made me LOOK BAD and discussed my feelings with them. They, of course, didn't understand where I was coming from and explained that was not the intention. I instinctively didn’t feel right about my actions, but couldn't stop myself from running amuck. Later, after reflecting on my actions, I realized the only person making me look bad was ME. Watch what you say! Sometimes, I use humor as a tool for people to like me. While networking with

good friends and colleagues I made an attempt to be funny. The event was winding down and I joined a circle of people in a conversation. When the time was right, I created a funny story around networking. They seemed to enjoy the story and so I trudged on. Then it happened! My joke turned a corner and I pulled a good friend into the joke. The words were coming out of my mouth and it was too late. I had now said things that put a good friend in an uncomfortable space. Wow! In one instant, I damaged my reputation with the people I care for the most. Watch what you say! Recently, my partner Kevin and I took several coaching classes at Landmark Education. One of the many things we learned is the power of your word and how words can shape the way people view who you are. Words can influence the people in your life in many different ways, good and bad. This was, as Oprah says, my “Ah Hah” moment. I can no longer not watch what I say! I recently was told about a blog site that really peaked my interests. Its focus is on changing behavior and documenting the observations and conclusions in a blog. One of the behavioral experiments is "21 Consecutive Days Without Negativity, Complaining and Gossip". After reading about that experiment, it all came together while I was creating

A Beginner's Guide to Orlando Gay Days Is this your first year at Orlando's Gay Days festival? If it is, you're in for a fabulous journey, but you're going to need a road map to navigate your way through this wonderland of gay vacation delights. The Beginner's Guide includes information for both men and women coming to Gay Days. It is also a great resource even if you are a regular attendee since Gay Days grows each year. Some people come to Orlando during Gay Days just to enjoy the company of 150,000+ other gays and lesbians, but most are looking to fill their itineraries with fun, fun, fun! Be sure to check a complete Calendar of Events on www.gaydays.com since only the highlights are represented here. This guide describes the major categories of events, tell you how to get tickets, and give you some ideas about transportation.

Theme Park Visits The Gay Days festival started with a theme park visit, and theme park visits remain one of the most popular Gay Days activities. Always the first Saturday in June, Gay Day in the Magic Kingdom (at Walt Disney World) is still the signature event of the week. An estimated 50,000 red-shirted Gay Days attendees pack Walt Disney World's original park on that 1st Saturday in June. The 3 o'clock parade down Main Street always draws an unforgettable "sea of red" that can be seen from one end of the park to the other. Many Gay Days vacationers also like to plan some time to visit Disney's other parks (Animal Kingdom, Epcot, and Disney's Hollywood Studios). • Theme park tickets will be available on www.gaydays.com • Multi-day tickets are often a great idea if you plan on visiting more than one park, or visiting all the Disney parks during your stay. • None of the "gay days" are official park events and no special tickets are required.

Disney Theme Parks • For theme park transportation, www.gaydays.com is again offering a Host Hotel (an all-gay resort experience!) at the Gay Days Host Hotel with free transportation to Disney and other attractions. • If you are staying in another area of town, check with your hotel about scheduled transportation to theme parks. • Catch a cab, during Gay Days; they are plentiful, and there are plenty of people to share with if you stay at one of the host or co-host hotels. • Downtown Orlando and area night clubs – These are located about 10 miles from the tourist area. Shuttle or taxi transportation can be arranged from any attraction-area hotel. Check with the guest services desk.

Big, Big Events Although it all began with a daytime trip to Disney World, Gay Days has inspired and nurtured some of the largest and most incredible events & parties in the world. With some of the most imaginative and innovative venues found anywhere, Orlando's Gay Days has an unbeatable combination of attractions, events, and parties to help create a magical dream of a vacation week. From the tropical wonderland of the Gay Days Host Hotel, to the thrill rides of The Magic Kingdom, you're sure to find an event that will amaze and delight you. • Tickets to attractions, plays, pool parties, and dance parties are available in advance online from www.gaydays.com Ticket Booth. Many of these are available exclusively at www.gaydays.com and sales are already brisk. • During the event, www.gaydays.com will operate a Ticket and Merchandise Center at the Gay Days Host Hotel. Be forewarned however, events may sell out in advance! • Cash and credit cards are accepted at the Gay Days Ticket and Merchandise Center during the week at the Gay Days Host Hotel. • Designated days at attractions held at WDW venues: Disney's parks are easily accessed by cab or hotel shuttle. Be sure to check shuttle times as the park hours might be outside regular shuttle hours. • Also consider renting a car, but be sure to have a designated driver if you plan on drinking. We want everyone to have a safe Gay Days.

Hotel Events Pool Parties – Orlando is the perfect place to spend your days soaking up the hot sun and hot scenery around a sparkling hotel swimming pool. This low-stress treat gets even better when you're surrounded by hundreds of GUYS and GALS in Speedos and bikinis, sipping umbrella drinks and grooving to the sounds of some of the world's best known DJs! Pool parties will be held Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the Gay Days Host Hotel. Tickets are required for these pool events if you aren't registered through www.gaydays.com as a hotel guest. The Gay Days Expo –growing since it was first held in 1999 – will be bigger and better again this year at the Gay Days Host Hotel. This event is free and open to the public with a wide variety of vendors, food, fun, and the Gay Days Ticket and Merchandise Center. Details are available at www.gaydaysexpo.com. The Expo will be open from Thursday through Sunday. Everybody loves this one!

Celebrate Gay Days in Red! By ALEX VAUGHN & ERIC CHRISTIAN Gay Days at Walt Disney World is a gay pride event held in Orlando annually during the Ḁrst week of June. Various circuit parties and dance events comprise the majority of the schedule, culminating in a park-sanctioned (but not park-organized) “Gay Day” at the end of the week, in which gay travellers wear red to let others know why they patronized the park that day.Gay Days was created in 1991 and was, originally, a single designated day, the Ḁrst Saturday of June. It began as a suggestion by a man named Doug Swallow and his companions. They brought up the idea of meeting at Disney in a group of 15-20. Doug put some more of his effort into it by promoting the idea in gay night clubs. Since the proposed date to gather at the theme park was a few months away, the newspapers and some radio talk stations decided to broadcast the plans. On this day, the gay community was encouraged by outside organizers to come to the park and “wear red and be seen” At its beginning, there were over 1,000 people who identiḀed as part of the LGBT community who showed up at Disney looking to enjoy the day. Over time, as people went home and told their friends and their friends told their friends, Gay Day turned into Gay Days and is now a week-long cel-

ebration. This event now attracts over 135,000 members of the LGBT community to spend the week in the Magic Kingdom. This movement is still identiḀed by the wearing of red as it symbolizes the unity of the LGBT community at this amazing event. So, check out our top red hot picks for this year’s Gay Days! H

The Lanna Dynasty Immortalized The Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi, Chiang Mai, Thailand By PAUL RUBIO According to western history books, northern Thailand’s glory years transpired during 19th century colonialism, when European explorers surmounted the dense jungles and vast rice fields to plant foreign roots of opulence, architecture and ideology. Yet, according to the indigenous Tai Yuan people, northern Thailand’s summit of grandeur dates back much earlier – to decades of prosperity and peace during the height of the Lanna Dynasty, circa mid-13th century. Both arguments notwithstanding, the ubiquitous and unwavering spirit of generosity, altruism and Buddhist tranquility that once defined the Kingdom of Lanna has stood the test of time and history. Nevertheless, recent phenomena of tourism, economic development and globalization have threatened to erase the few remaining links to the Golden Triangle’s splendid, yet tumultuous, past. At the dawn of the millennium, historians, designers and entrepreneurs collaborated on an elaborate and ambitious plan to safeguard the region’s cultural heritage – a bold, unprecedented step of cultural preservation in Thailand. Therein, the Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi was born – an authentic living museum, reinstating regional periods of Lanna dynasty brilliance and dignity and immortalizing popular traditions from the 13th to the 19th centuries. The 60-acre Lanna-inspired village took incredible determination, primary research and foresight (and a decade of preparation). The result plays out like a living storybook fantasy, a curious “Once Upon A Time” transporting its readers to a sensual juxtaposition of a bygone age and marvelous modernity. Past the horse drawn carriages, towering temples double as common areas,

infinity pools spill onto rice fields and expert Thai artisans pass their knowledge onto curious visitors. Traditional wooden rice barns absorb the afternoon shade relayed from the spires of a resurrected replica of the ancient Royal Palace of Mandalay, now doubling as a 33,000 square foot spa. High-gabled Thai style homes constructed of polished teak wood line clandestine village passageways. Meticulously appointed colonial mansions reflect later centuries of “East meets West,” honoring a time of discovery and the marriage of two worlds. Contemplative travelers experience a journey of self and explorative enlightenment. Every spire, every façade, every locally handcrafted structure of the Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi tells a profound story. The rattling bridge at the resort’s entrance replicates a 13th century design to warn of intruders. The filled water barrels and wooden spoons positioned by the double-storied teakwood Villas were once typical of the region, selfless offerings of hydration and nourishment for traveling rice workers. Spa therapists offer traditional Thai massage augmented by indigenous techniques involving soothing tamarind bark instruments. Luxury travelers revel in the haute minutia, privacy and serenity of the resort. Teak carvings, lavish Thai silks and hill tribe textiles accent technologically savvy accommodations and mesmerizing design interiors. A full fitness facility, private plunge pools, tennis courts and a half dozen restaurants blend into the Lanna landscape, gracing the perimeters of surrounding rice fields and lush tropical gardens. The resort’s most famed restaurant, “Grand Lanna,” serves divine upscale northern Thai specialties while elaborately cos-

tumed dancers chronicle Thai history and traditions. The resort spectacular spans the entire constructed village of Dhara Dhevi, a labyrinthine of Asian wonder and living history that overwhelms and ambushes the psyche. At every given chance, the Dhara Dhevi team showers patrons with revered Thai service, so innate and genuine, studied and exalted the world over. A quiet respite from the outside world, but a just mile from the bustle of modern Chiang Mai, this indulgent Lanna dynasty time machine combines history, culture, fantasy and luxury for an experience of a lifetime. Saving Cold Cash During the Hot Summer By MICHAEL FRENCH

Summer is here! Ah, the hours of sunshine seems endless, the frenetic pace of the season gives way to a more relaxed atmosphere, traffic is lighter, restaurant reservations are much easier to come by, and Florida “belongs” to us again! But, there’s a catch. Florida’s long summer arrives with two friends carrying heavy baggage, and we Floridians know them all too well. They’re called Heat and Humidity. These two get all the blame for bad hair days, short tempers, wrinkled clothes, mold and lightheadedness. Hmm … the latter couldn’t be from just one too many pitchers of your favorite brew, now could it? It’s just easier to blame the heat. Denial is not a river in Egypt! So we summon the “white knight” of air

jean’s kitchen

conditioning to rescue us! He’s mercenary though, because he comes to our aid at an often high price if we aren’t prudent. With the rise in oil prices, so follows cooling costs. For many Floridians, especially in these challenging economic times, staying comfortably cool takes an ever bigger slice of the budget pie. Keeping cool, without handing over too much of your hard earned cash to the electric utility during Florida’s long, sizzling summer requires a thoughtful strategy. No one has to be a slave to their cooling bill! Put that salivating wolf of an electric company on a diet! No matter whether one lives in a multi- or single family home, there’s no shortage of ways to save lots of money on summer’s electric bills. No, it’s not very exciting to actually commit to saving electricity, but for every cent saved that’s more you can spend on actually getting away from the heat … like an Alaskan cruise. First, establish your true comfort level. Use a combination of fans and A/C; still, stagnant air can make the temperature feel much warmer than it really is. Oscillating fans are great for really moving the air. Plan your cooling strategy once you’ve established the highest temperature you can tolerate, without compromising the enjoyment of your abode. Everyone should get a programmable thermostat. Program the thermostat to not turn the A/C on until the temperature reaches 81 degrees when you aren’t home.

Blue Cheese Sauce

Blue cheese is a general classification of cow's milk, sheep's milk or goat's milk cheeses that have had cultures of the mold Penicillium added so that the final product is spotted or veined throughout with blue, blue-gray or blue-green mold, and carries a distinct smell. Some blue cheeses are injected with spores before the curds form and others have spores mixed in with the curds after they form. Blue cheeses are typically aged in a temperature-controlled environment such as a cave. In the European Union, many blue cheeses, such as Roquefort (France), Gorgonzola (Italy) and Stilton (England), carry a protected designation of origin, meaning they can bear the name only if they have been made in a particular region in a certain country. The characteristic flavor of blue cheese tends to be sharp and a bit salty. The smell of this cheese is both due to the mold and types of bacteria encouraged to grow on the cheese. I think the more stinky the cheese, the more tasty the sauce … • 8 ounces good blue cheese, crumbled (I use one from Wisconsin and it’s great, but you can use any kind) • 1 -2 shallots, finely chopped • 2 tablespoons Brandy or Cognac • 1 good pinch of fresh ground pepper • 2 tablespoons butter

• 1 tablespoon flour • 3/4 cup heavy cream Heat the butter in a pan over a medium heat and cook the shallots until they’re lightly colored. Add the flour and stir, then add in the Brandy and slowly whisk in the heavy cream. Add the crumbled blue cheese, whisking constantly. Add the pepper. You are a chef ! Make a big batch and freeze in small portions. Remember, you are the chef !H

While home, set the temperature at 78 degrees. Fans can make the room feel at least 4 degrees cooler at just one mile per hour. Circulating air keeps your space drier too, making it more difficult for mold or mildew to develop. You can’t have too many fans. Plant deciduous trees on the south and west side of your home so they shade the house during the hottest part of the day. Just three trees can cut hundreds of dollars per year from an annual cooling expense. Shade the compressor of the central A/C unit. Make sure all doors and windows are caulked and closed tightly. Lower the hot water heater to 115 degrees, use compact fluorescent light bulbs (they are 4 times cooler), select air dry on the dishwasher and use the microwave instead of the oven or stove. Use white, sun reflective window coverings to deflect the heat, add insulation to the attic and install a fan up there. Attics trap huge amounts of heat, thus making your A/C system work harder and adding to your electric bill. There are great deals out there on new central A/C systems. Offers of huge rebates, tax credits and zero percent financing are very common. A ten year old system can use fifty percent more energy than a new one! Most local electricity providers will actually come to your home at no cost and analyze your home for its energy efficiency. Take advantage of it!

Keep the heat in your home down by having more BBQ’s! Does your grill have cobwebs? Using a recipe of common sense, prudence, creativity, and elbow grease, you can save more than you imagine on your electric bill and still be comfortable! Keeping the house warmer when you’re not there, you can turn the thermostat down at night to a comfy cool temperature, just right for, well, use your imagination! H

Burgers That Rock! By TIM SLIVINSKI Sometimes a craving hits you; it may not hit that often, but when it does, it begs to be satisfied. That defines my relationship with burgers. Truly, I don’t eat them often, but when that hankering for a burger hits, it hits hard. Not just any burger will do, however. And trust me, the burgers at ROK: BRGR are not in any way “just burgers”. This gastropub burst on the scene last fall, and it always seems to be packing the crowds in. One visit, one burger and you will understand why. ROK:BRGR is a pub. But what sets a gastropub apart from a typical pub is the quality of food that graces its menu. It’s a place that’s filled with happy, laughing, satisfied people. It puts you in a good mood when you walk in. If you are in need of a cocktail before you select your burger, then the bar menu will tempt you with several unique libations. Being a bourbon fan, I was struck immediately by their signature cocktail: the ROK “Old Fashion.” Bacon infused Maker’s Mark is shaken with maple syrup, bitters and then garnished with an orange slice. Wow! I am not certain what I was expecting, but it was smoky, sweet and refreshing all at the same time. My dining partner is a nut for craft beers, and the long list at ROK:BRGR offered him several options. He first tried the Avery White Rascal and pronounced it delicious, before moving on to a Hawaiian Beer, the

Kona Longboard. Because the glass emptied quickly, I knew it was a winner, too. Before delving into the array of burgers, we decided to sample a couple items from the Snacks and Bar Bites menu. The Mini Kobe Hot Dogs were amazingly delicious, and this from someone who rarely eats hot dogs. Three “slider” sized hot dogs arrived on toast buns, smothered in chili and cheese. The mini dogs themselves were hanging outside the bun on both ends. Messy, but tasty. We also were intrigued by the Fried B&B Pickles. A rather large portion of tempura battered pickles arrived with a smoked ranch dip. Easily enough to share, they were tangy and crunchy good and not at all greasy. It was time to enter burger heaven. ROK:BRGR offers several variations on the burger with an interesting choice of toppings. If, however, none of them seem to be exactly what you are looking for, they also offer a build your own burger option. I chose to go the construction worker path. It begins with choosing your meat. If you are not a beef eater, you have the option of choosing a chicken, turkey or ahi tuna burger. I opted for the certified Black Angus beef. You then have several bun options. From there, move on to cheese selections. After that, there are grilled items, such as sautéed mushrooms or caramelized onions. Various greens are offered to give your burger some veg-

gie crunch. Now you are at “burger bling.” Select from such offerings as foie gras, a fried egg, an onion ring, truffle oil and more. Finally, it’s no mere mustard and catsup here, oh no. The list of sauces is extensive, each promising heat, smoke, garlic, spice and more. I had my burger on brioche with some horseradish cheddar, caramelized onions, arugula and spicy mayo. It was a two hand burger that was grilled to perfect medium rare doneness. It gave me a little heat, a little crunch, a little sweet and a mouthful of burger flavor to satisfy my craving. My dining partner went outside the box a bit and ordered the Mediterranean Burger. Rather than beef, the meat was an 8oz. lamb burger. It was seasoned with Middle Eastern spices and complemented with arugula, tomato and onion. It came with a cucumber mint sauce, much like tzatziki. He pronounced it purely Middle Eastern and purely delicious. If for some reason you are not in a burger mood, then ROK:BRGR does offer

some other entrée selections. Try Mom’s meatloaf or a flatiron steak, or perhaps Shepard’s Pie or a traditional BLT will hit the spot. Go for the Mac n’ Cheese or an order of Truffle Fries. ROK:BRGR is a great place to satisfy a burger craving, but it’s also a lively, high energy, fun place to meet a friend or two and enjoy an evening. On weekends, you can even satisfy those late night hunger pangs, as the kitchen serves until 4 a.m. Crank up the car radio and rock and roll your way down to ROK:BRGR. H

Matinée Idol By CHARLIE ROCKAFORT

Don’t hate him because he’s beautiful. Once a runway model, Hector Fonseca has transformed himself into one of America’s hottest DJs. In addition to headlining some of the most important parties around the world – New York’s Black Party, Miami’s Winter Party, and Circuit Festival in Barcelona – Hector has released two top selling compilation albums and remixes for pop artists like Katy Perry, Kelis and Lady Gaga. The matinee idol returns to Gay Days on June 4th to spin the ultimate dance event of the summer, Matinée presents Ibiza Rising at Universal Studios. Tell us a bit about your spinning style – what can we expect at Ibiza Rising? Expect the unexpected! I’m all about live mixing and re-mixing. I tend to play tribal progressive with vocal samples and classics worked in. I also preview remixes and productions I have been working on. I never play the same set twice so my dance floor is always a unique experience. What are you most proud of in your career? My production work. There are a lot of DJs out there. I can honestly say I bring something unique to the table with my original music. It’s rare in this business and I’m proud of it. What is it like to be a Matinee idol? I can’t complain! I’m very fortunate to do what I love.

Have your looks ever gotten in the way? When I started dj’ing, people looked down on the fact that I had been a model. That made me work really hard on my music with less focus on my image. Let’s talk about your music. What are you working on now? I am now doing official remixes for artists like Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, but that’s not where it ends for me. I would like to write some original music for them someday and win awards for it. With all of your success, do you worry you may have reached your peak? While I’ve done a lot in a relatively short amount of time, I definitely have not peaked. I look at my predecessors like Danny Tenaglia, Victor Calderone and Abel and I know I have not reached their level. I am on my way, though. Finish the sentence: A good night out starts with... A sexy beat. It ends with... A sexy someone you meet. H

No Pain, No Gain? There is a better and safer way to succeed in the gym! By TOM BONANTI It’s a fact that in order to make gains in the gym you need a little pain and suffering. No one ever said building a beautiful body was easy! Good old muscle soreness is as much a part of working out as protein shakes and broiled chicken breasts. Yet physical pain is nothing to take lightly. The old saying, “No pain, no gain.” is a bunch of macho bull invented by some steroid muscle head as an excuse to take more drugs. Be aware of your body as you work out. When you’re exercising and something starts hurting, cut it out, or you may risk serious injury – injury that could set you back and cause you to lose important gains. Stop, drink some water, stretch lightly and re-evaluate your form. Proceed with caution as you continue your workout. If pain persists, take a break, head for the ice and seriously consider seeing your physician. This is especially true for individuals with pre-existing joint or muscle issues. Being a big brave macho man and working through the pain could eventually bring you to your knees in one hell of a hurry. For certain conditions, consult your doctor before beginning or restarting your routine. I’m referring here to

things like chronic neck pain, shoulder impingement or rotator cuff issues, chronic low back pain and chondromalacia (wearing of the patella). Once you’re diagnosed and treated for one of these ailments, only with your physician’s approval should you return to working out. Most doctors will tell you that with the correct progressive exercise program, many of the above conditions can be greatly improved – often without any prolonged lay-off. Make sure if you have a personal trainer to get a note from your physician giving you clearance to exercise and have the doctor list any restrictions you may have to observe with your current condition. Whether you are a healthy fresh-faced rookie or a seasoned pro with an injury or two under your belt, there are a few steps you can take to keep strong and pain free for years to come. 1. Don’t forget the importance of a 5-10 minute warm-up before you lift. A brief walk to the gym from home or a few minutes on a recumbent bike can rev-up your metabolism and warm-up joints and muscles, preventing injuries. 2. Stretch briefly and lightly before lifting weights. Save more intensive stretching of the muscle group you are

working for between sets or after your overall workout. Greater flexibility means less chance of injuries during bodybuilding or any other sport or physical activity. 3. Weight training should be progressive. Begin with a light warm-up set and then progressively challenge your muscles with the next few sets as you add weight gradually and carefully. Keep a journal of the weight you lift. 4. Always watch your form as you perform each exercise. Be careful. Get a good contraction of the muscle during the positive or concentric part of the motion and slow down on the negative or eccentric phase of the repetition. Take your time with each exercise and make each rep of each set count. Don’t bounce, jerk or throw weights around. Put weights back where they came from and maintain good gym etiquette. Your body is a work of art and your workout is one the most important tools you have to shape and sculpt it the way you like. Make sure to perform your exercises in a safe manner to prevent injury and build a body that is symmetrically balanced with strength and flexibility. H

That’s Shoppes with an “E” (Not Lisa with an “S”) By CLIFF DUNN Tongues have been wagging – and without apparent justification (go figure) – regarding an imminent/eventual demolition of some/all of the Shoppes of Wilton Manors, the strip shopping center at the corner of Wilton Drive and Northeast 7 Avenue in Wilton Manors, home to such businesses as Island City Health & Fitness (ICHF), Georgie’s Alibi, Juiceblendz and Gay Mart, among others, and the former location for the Poverello Food Bank and Thrift Store and the Social Security Administration. The rumors are fueled – apparently – by the departure of the last-named entities within the past year, as well as reports that rents in the Shoppes may/are being raised by Rivercrest Properties, the realty company which purchased the venerable shopping center in 2007. Open for Business has learned that the reports are based upon an idea recently floated by a new Wilton Manors city official about building a new hotel on Wilton Drive (this idea should not be confused with the slew of plans which have been discussed, shelved, tabled, resurrected, etc., over the past three years about a new resort coming to the Island City – or possibly Oakland Park, Fort Lauderdale, etc., etc., etc.). The official had reputedly approached Rivercrest to sound them out about their interest in converting the north end of the Shoppe’s parking area into a fullsized parking LOT to accommodate a hotel complex. Reece Darham, owner of ICHF, confirms that his lease runs through the end of Spring 2012, and of larger concern to him and other merchants is not the parking for an increasingly-hypothetical resort on the city’s main drag, but the use of the Shoppes’ existing (and very limited) parking by staff and employees of other Wilton Drive businesses who park at the Shoppes, then walk to work across the street or down the Drive.

Help Wanted: Publicist; Must Hate Fags Pastor Bradlee Dean has a P.R. problem (that’s as in Public Relations; Open for Business is unclear as to his worldview on Puerto Rican persons). The Minnesota preacher – who in the past has called for the imprisonment of LGBT individuals and claimed that Osama bin Laden and President Barack Obama were allies – is calling on supporters to donate money in an effort to hire a professional image-maker. The Minneapolis-based minister, founder of the You Can Run But You Cannot Hide International Youth Ministry,

is claiming that the “liberal-biased media [is] … attempting to inflict serious damage to my ministry and my reputation. While we are putting up a good defense with the resources we have readily available, we are in serious need of a publicist on a short-term basis.” And years of intense psychotherapy probably wouldn’t hurt, either.

It’s Summer – So Why are there So Many People in South Florida? Open for Business enjoyed an interested exchange with Naked Grape owner Caleb Ben-Avram and his partner, Tim Slivinski, at last week’s kick off of Sunday T-Dance at The Depot Cabana Bar & Grill on US1 in Fort Lauderdale. In spite of the presence of large numbers of people at Memorial Day Weekend events across South Florida, Slivinski noted that there is still a belief that the town goes dark during the summer months. “We live here year ‘round,” notes Slivinski. “We are here in July, too. I have never understood why so many of the clubs, bars and restaurants insist on conducting themselves as if the drawbridge gets pulled up between May and October every year. This area has so many dynamic venues and a great yearround population that needs to be more closely targeted and catered to.” His partner, Ben-Avram, agrees. “We love and need the tourism business, and want the tourists to feel a part of the action and the community. But we see South Florida like a native does, and there needs to be more care and feeding of the locals.”
