GOLDEN RETRIEVER RESCUE
Thirty years ago Sunday, on June 5, 1981, the first cases of what would become known as AIDS were reported. The disease that was centered in San Francisco was first detected in Los Angeles. Those first cases were reported as "Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP)." A UCLA researcher, Dr. Michael Gottlieb, published articles about "otherwise healthy young gay patients experiencing fungal infections and PCP" in the Centers for Disease Control's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. The articles caught the attention of doctors in the Bay Area, who noticed similar symptoms in their patients. San Francisco General Hospital admitted its first AIDS patient in July of 1981. By October, five months after the first cases were reported, the Centers for Disease Control declared the new disease an epidemic. A year later, the CDC gave the disease a new name – Acquired

MIAMI, FL – WSVN has dropped the Spanish language talk show from their digital channel 7-2 lineup. Channel 7-2 is an affiliate of the Estrella TV Network and dropped the show, Jose Luis Sin Censura, due to complaints from gay activists and a Hispanic media coalition. The Gay Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) filed a complained earlier this year with the Federal Communications Commission. In response, AT&T and Time Warner Cable also stopped advertising on the show. According to a press release from GLAAD, last year the show broadcast sexual situations and anti-gay and antiLatin slurs. Some episodes showed the audience standing and shouting anti-gay comments and profanity at guests. WSVN is the only Estrealla affiliate to drop the program.H

Nepal Census Recognizes 'Third Gender' KATHMANDU, NEPAL -- CNN reported that Nepal's Central Bureau of Statistics is giving official recognition to gay and transgender people, a move seen as major victory for equality in a country that only decriminalized homosexual relationships three years ago. When census gatherers went door-todoor visiting 5.6 million households across Nepal this month, they collected information not only on the country's men and women, but also on a so-called third gender.H
DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz recognizes LGBT Pride Month WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democratic National Committee Char U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL 22) has joined President Barack Obama in recognizing June as LGBT Pride Month: “This June, I join together with LGBT Americans across this country in recognizing PRIDE Month. That means celebrating the enormous strides that LGBT Americans have taken toward equality, but it also means rededicating ourselves to guaranteeing that all Americans – no matter their sexual orientation – are
looked upon as fully equal in the eyes of the law. “Thanks to the hard work of President Obama and LGBT activists across the country, we are now closer than ever to that goal. The outdated and discriminatory policy known as ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ has been repealed. The President has directed the Department of Justice to stop defending DOMA in court and declared it unconstitutional. The hate crimes prevention law has been expanded and we now have our nation’s first comprehensive HIV/AIDS strategy. The President continues to work to dispel the myth that bullying, particularly of LGBT students, is a harmless part of growing up and works each day to better the lives of LGBT Americans in every facet of American life. On the international stage, President Obama has shown global leadership in condemning anti-LGBT violence at the United Nations and took the opportunity at the National Prayer Breakfast to speak out against the 'odious' anti-gay legislation pending in Uganda. “Forty two years ago this month, LGBT Americans’ struggle for equal rights entered into the American consciousness when individuals at the Stonewall Inn decided to take a stand. In the four decades since, Americans across this country have kept up the fight for equality. This PRIDE Month, we recommit to this struggle for equality as we strive to finally make injustice and inequality things of the past.”H

The Department of Defense did not reveal full details or the name of the Airman discharged.H
“Glee” Star Trashes Fox News LOS ANGELES, CA – According to the Huffington Post, “Glee” star Jane Lynch took shots at News Corp and Fox News at the recent D9 Tech Conference despite her and the conference’s contractual allegiance to News Corp. Lynch portrays Sue Sylvester on the Fox network’s hit show, Glee. She also took shots at Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck. Lynch made the introductory speech at the conference and, in so doing, used her popular Sylvester persona in which she has won an Emmy award. The D9 Conference is put on by All Things Digital, which is also owned by News Corp. Lynch pretended that Sylvester was acting CEO of News Corp and was making changes while the actual News Corp CEO, Rupert Murdoch, was out of the country. “I'm launching a Fox News investigation into the young and fresh face cast of ‘Glee’” she said, joking about Fox News’

I’ve also convinced Glenn Beck to stay on at Fox for one final gig as a dying patient on ‘House’ -- with a horrendous malady. His sickness is consuming him from the inside out.” She then went on to Palin: “I’m pretty sure we got Sarah Palin to do a guest spot on ‘Glee’. She'll perform an original tune I penned: ‘Look at Me, I’m Batshit Crazy”.H
NY Support for Same-Sex Marriage Highest Ever ALBANY, NY – A new poll from Quinnipiac shows support for same-sex marriage in New York is at 58%, its highest point ever. According to the New York Daily News: “Voters in the survey backed legalizing marriage between same-sex couples 58-36%, 'higher than ever while statistically unchanged from 56-38% April 14.' Once again, we see a split along party lines: Democrats support legalization 72-23%, independents back it 58-34% and GOP voters are opposed, 64-34%. Men support same-sex marriage 58-37%; women, 59-34%.” The paper also reported that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has made a pitch to several Republican State Senators to support marriage equality recently.H
Former NC Candidate Arrested for Gay Rights Protest RALEIGH, NC – Following a “Rally for Equality” outside the North Carolina legislature last week, three protesters were arrested after busting in the House chamber and chanting while it was in session. Included in the arrest was former Senate candidate Jim Neal. About 200 people attended the rally. The three were charged with disorderly conduct. The protesters were with the activist group GetEQUAL. Witnesses said three to five people were involved, some shouting “Liberty and justice for all!” House Speaker Thom Tillis repeatedly banged his gavel, but kept the session running after the momentary disruption. The North Carolina General Assembly is considering two bills that would amend the state's Constitution to ban same-sex marriage and prevent businesses and municipalities from offering domestic partnerships, while nullifying benefits that already exist. Ian Palmquist of Equality NC, a gayrights group, issued a statement to the paper: “While we share the protesters’ passion for equal rights, we cannot condone today’s disruption of the House session.”H

and outlaw discrimination against gay and lesbian parents from adopting and fostering children. At SAVE Dade's 2011 Champions of Equality Awards Reception, Martin Gill, the plaintiff in the ACLU of Florida's case that successfully overturned Florida's 33-year ban on gay and lesbian adoption, delivered to Ros-Lehtinen a personal letter about his struggle to adopt his two sons. Martin's personal appeal worked. Within days of receiving Martin's letter, Rep. Ros-Lehtinen announced she will be the first Republican Member of Congress to co-sponsor the Every Child Deserves a Family Act. The Congresswoman spoke directly to Martin's personal message as the tippingpoint that influenced her decision: “There are many needy children in foster care who want a permanent and safe home environment. Right now, many individuals would like to provide a home for these children, but they are denied the opportunity due to laws relating to sexual orientation. A constituent of my Congressional district, Martin Gill, has given a public face to this dilemma and has fought these laws so that he and his partner can provide an orderly and warm home to their two adopted sons. I thank SAVE Dade for its leadership on this issue of non-discrimination.” Ros-Lehtinen was born in Havana, Cuba, one of two children born to Enrique Ros and his wife, Amanda Adato. She received her Bachelor of Arts in education and her Master of Arts in educational leadership from Florida International University. pandemic and human suffering caused by AIDS. In the past 30 years, 25 million people have died due to AIDS-related illnesses. Right now, more than 33 million people are living with HIV/AIDS. More than two-thirds of the current cases are in Africa, where the epidemic rages out of control despite prevention efforts. On the anniversary, however, hope is still powerful and, with advancements in medications, there is belief in the future. Michael Beatty is proof of the strides made since the disease was identified three decades ago. "There was a time in my life I never thought I'd live to see 30,” Beatty told 7NEWS Reporter Don Champion. He was infected in 1985. His diagnosis came at a time when the disease baffled doctors and scientists alike. Headlines back then referred to the disease as the "gay plague." The survival rate was zero percent. Things started to change as the development of drugs like AZT helped prolong lives. Years later, in 1995, the approval of protease inhibitors began bringing patients back to life. Hope was born. Prior to entering political life, RosLehtinen was an educator and the owner/operator of a private school in Miami-Dade County. Upon her election to succeed the late Congressman Claude Pepper, she became the first Cuban American and the first Hispanic woman elected to the United States Congress. She is currently the most senior Republican woman in the U.S. House, and was the first Republican woman elected to the House of Representatives from Florida. She is chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, effective 2011. Ros-Lehtinen sides with the Democrats on many issues of gay rights. Her district includes large LGBT populations in South Beach, Miami Beach and in the Florida Keys. She is currently the only Republican member of the LGBT Equality Caucus and is a vice-chairperson. Although she is not a co-sponsor of the Uniting American Families Act, she supports anti-hate crime laws, anti-discrimination bills, believes gays and lesbians should be allowed to serve openly in the armed forces, is a sponsor of the Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act, voted against the Federal Marriage Amendment and was a founding member (one of only two Republicans) and the only current Republican member of the LGBT congressional caucus. In December, 2010, Ros-Lehtinen was one of fifteen Republican House members to vote in favor of repealing the United States military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" ban on openly gay service members. H
LOS ANGELES, CA – MTV’s new series, Teen Wolf, premiered June 5th, but not without controversy. The star of the new show, Colton Haynes, was in a photo feature of the now defunct gay
problem he blames on stigma. "The act of requesting a test can be seen as an admission of some sin and taboo,” Young said. “It's a barrier to getting tested. It's a barrier for doctors asking about getting tested." Colorado has played a major role in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The University of Colorado was the site of early research. The Denver Principles, which spell out rights and responsibilities of people living with HIV, were drafted here. The work hasn’t reduced the impact the disease has had on the state. According to Rocky Mountain Cares, between 350 and 500 new cases of HIV have been reported in Colorado every year since 1995. The numbers are one reason Beatty focuses his work on prevention. He works as Program Director of the Denver Element, a group that helps spread the word to gay men in the city. For Shannon Southall, it's about spreading the power of prevention to women. They make up more than half of infections worldwide. She tries to share a message that, Southall said, women in America have been slow to embrace, especially women of color. “It means we need to start doing more education. And not only with women that are putting themselves at risk, but also those who don’t realize they’re putting themselves at risk,” she said.
So, will we see a cure in the next 10 years? “That ‘C' word is a really big one,” Young said. “I'm very cautiously optimistic.” At 58, Forest Frantz is old enough to remember the fear and the hysteria. “I remember from the very beginning, reading the first article in the early 80’s and being scared to death,” he says. The epicenter may have been 90 miles away from him in San Francisco, but the shockwaves were felt in Sacramento. It was the early 1980’s, Frantz was 28 and gay men were dying horribly painful deaths. "And looking for every lesion, every, everything that could possibly be. I watched people die for all these years.” Skin lesions marked the earliest cases. ”My friend, we’re talking about thousands of men,” and a promiscuous Canadian flight attendant was branded patient one in the 1993 HBO Movie: And the Band Played On. At the time, the survival rate was zero. Diane Jones was a nurse at San Francisco General Hospital, “What is still happening is that if I sit down with someone and tell them they are HIV positive, they are still reacting the same way they did 30 years ago. Am I going to die? I can’t tell anybody.” Even today, the social consequences can be severe, and gay advocate Paul Luna says he knows people who’ve lost jobs. ”People can’t say it because they could lose their friends, their family,

Mabius told Zap2it that there was an executive at the network at that time who did not like the Emmy-award winning show and continued to change the show’s time slot and failed to adequately promote the program. Mabius refused to name the executive, but did say he is no longer at the network. Mabius says the executive in question was uncomfortable with the ongoing storyline about Betty's teenage nephew, Justin, and his awakening gay identity, but the same man also was unhappy with Michael Urie's giddily over-the-top work as Marc, Wilhelmina Slater's (Vanessa Williams) flamboyant assistant, despite the fact that the character was a huge fan favorite. The actor said: “I'm pretty sure that the first teenage romantic kiss between two boys on network television was on our show, but did you hear anything about it? Was it promoted? The punishment was apparent every week. When they would run teasers for the next week’s episode of other shows, they didn't even do those for us. That’s how little support we had. It’s short-sighted and silly. There was an undeniable feeling that the show was over at least a season early.”H

But new infections have dropped by two-thirds over the past three decades. Ever improving drugs are allowing the infected to live longer. But 30, even 20 years later, young gay men are again promiscuous; many, simply never seeing the consequences, never seeing someone die from AIDS. ”Certainly it was a pressing issue when I came out. The first thing my mother did was break down and cry and said: ‘I don’t want you to die of AIDS,’ says Camera Scot who came out of the closet when he was 19. Cheater Cheater Asking what possesses a cheater to betray their loved one is a loaded question that really does have a million and one answers, not to mention sub-sections as to what actually counts as cheating. From flirting, to a peck, to a passionate kiss, to sex, to fully-fledged affairs of the heart, cheating spells doom for a relationship, especially if it happens early on. The moment you find out you have been cheated on, your world crashes. The love you thought you had is gone and the excuses are there to replace it. “It was just sex, it didn’t mean anything!” Then why did you do it? “I was looking for something you can’t give me.” Well, I hope you found it in the arms of another woman/man. And the best “I was drunk.” A martini, not a morally devoid lush! In a community where sex is on the menu more often than love, many people believe the gay community is just promiscuous. In many cases it is, but the difference between straight and gay cheating is straight cheating has become part of the norm – we see it in movies and on TV and know of someone who has cheated or been cheated on. It is shocking and we would be appalled. In the gay community, a cheating husband or wife is a subset, those on the DL. However, a gay relationship that is solid and then rocked by infidelity seems to not garner the same sympathy or shock. It seems it’s almost expected, especially if you live in Fort Lauderdale or San Francisco or Washington DC – anywhere where there is a high percentage of gay men. The reason is clear: Too much on offer, too many hot bods, younger models and too much apparently consequence-free sex. So, the worst has happened and your lover has cheated. Well, first off you decide what cheating is – is a drunken kiss in a bar that bad? Well, in my opinion it’s bad enough because it chips away at the trust foundations you have built. Who was the kiss with? Did they know that your man/woman was already with someone? Did they care? Then there is the worst: The actual affair.
Alex Vaughn I think people still need to be reminded it can NEVER work. As the cheater, you won’t leave your partner but feel you can play along in a happy affair with someone and that no one will know. If you do get away with it for a while, count yourself lucky, but
"Physical infidelity is the signal, the notice given, that all fidelities are undermined." – Katherine Anne Porter one day it will catch up with you and the longer it went on the more hurt you will do to your partner and, ultimately, yourself. Then, being the other woman/man. Think about this: If they are prepared to have a relationship with you, why are you any different from that Lifetime Original Movie character who continues to tell her friends “he is just waiting for the right time to leave his wife”. I mean, really? If they do leave their partner, which they won’t, but let’s just say they do, has it not been clearly shown you that he or she just can’t be trusted? Of course there are urban stories of couples who have been very happy after they cheat and marry the affair, but they are rare
Letters to the Editor In response to the Editorial by Alex Vaughn, “Let Them Entertain Us”, Florida Agenda, June 2nd. and I don’t believe there isn’t somewhere deep down a sense of doubt in that relationship. So they have cheated – the next phase is to decide whether you forgive and forget. (A message to all cheaters: Forgiveness is the easy part, forgetting is the hard part – very few people forget.) The next time you are late at a meeting expect, a third-degree when you get home, every time. A cheater is a cheater, no matter the 'reason,' but society has caught up with many men’s and women’s need to have multiple sexual partners with the theory of “an open relationship”. Personally, I think the idea absurd in any context, particularly in the beginning of a relationship. Now longer term, I couldn’t comment as I don’t know. Why would you start a relationship saying, “I am a cheater and if you don’t let me slut around the gayborhood, then this relationship won’t work.” What happened to the time where you meet someone and, as you fall for them, your world becomes consumed by their kiss, their touch, their looks – and only theirs? Apparently now, that can still all happen, as long as one can also screw around. This so-called condoned cheating has pitfalls, obviously first and fore most in ensuring both people in the relationship really want one, rather than the more dominant pushing the more submissive into agreeing to something so as to keep the relationship going. In addition, the biggest risk is that while your partner – or you, for that matter – is being open, what’s to protect you from confusing sex with a better relationship prospect? Simplistically, cheating is cheating, when you start a relationship, in the middle or even near the end, open or not. When you share a part of you with another person that you have previously kept back for the one you love, it is cheating. Someone always ends up getting hurt, and ultimately it’s the one who deserves it the least. H

Who Knew? Thriving - The Evolution of Healing By sam knew, msw When it comes to life, there are some moments permanently engraved in our minds: Our first kiss, our first love, our first pair of Prada navy suede logo penny loafers. There are also some memories, however, we could spend a lifetime trying to forget. In some cases, these memories can leave profound scars, hindering our journey toward self-healing and forgiveness. This can leave many of us trapped in the numbing, powerless role of “the victim”. But somehow many of us take the small crucial steps toward survival and even learn to thrive in spite of it all. As a rule of thumb, most mental health counselors avoid the word “victim.” This may even include those who have experienced traumatic, life changing events (sexual abuse, health diagnoses, loss of a loved one, etc.). The word victim implies a lack of choices or a sense of helplessness. This perspective could leave individuals preoccupied with the past, creating a barrier towards progress. As an alternative, we prefer them to self-identify as “survivors”. Survivors see the world differently from victims. They still struggle to find reasons for their problems, but seek out
help to overcome them. Survivors also tend to not be as isolated and can see their own negative patterns. This path from victim to survivor is paved with patience, hard work and a unique inner strength that can only be described as heroic. Make no mistake: Their evolution is to be envied and celebrated. These individuals push to pick themselves up and attempt to create a healthier life in spite of their past experiences, even when they have trouble believing it for themselves. In some cases, the process challenges them to relive the trauma in hopes of escaping its suffocating and paralyzing power. This process is as individual as the people themselves. The process can’t be rushed, as so many loving bystanders naively may hope – and even express. Survivors are also not expected to ignore
@ or deny t h a t t h e y have been victimized; rather, come to a point of acceptance and understanding to allow them to take control of their life. What most come to discover is that there is no magic wand that can erase the memories or undo the past. They learn to cope with negative and distracting feelings and thoughts. And, although they realize they may never be “cured” or “freed” of

these traumas, they strive each day to move forward. The eventual goal is to commit to this healing process, and thrive. Survivors who move into the “thriver” role become more satisfied with life, create long-term goals and revive feelings of empowerment, compassion, joy and love. One way they do this is by connecting with others, sharing their story and acting as a source of strength for others. Thrivers, more than anyone, echo the sentiment: This too shall pass. H

Fantasy TV The Fall Line-Up Full of Flights of Fancy By THe OBseRVaTIOnIsT The other day, I was talking with my friend, Ray, about the Logo Television Network. While I appreciate that there is a network dedicated to gay programming, I have to say that the shows are pretty lame. While I give “RuPaul’s Drag U” credit for what it is, the rest of the television line-up makes me cringe. I mean, come ON! How many times do I have to watch a rerun of “Buffy,” and, even more to the point, when in the Sam Hill did “Buffy” qualify as gay TV? And please don’t get me started on that show “The A-List,” which only perpetuates every gay stereotype about dudes that are obsessed with money, looks and bitchiness. If I wanted to waste my time watching that sort of douche-baggery, I would move to LA. Gays, I’m freakin’ bummed by this! We are better than defaulting on crappy reality TV that stars even crappier people. These shows are predictable and downright boring! That is why, with some seed money (and no, I’m not talking about that “seed”), I would like to start my own network and have the best damn gay programming that has ever graced the small screen. So, without further ado, I present The Observationist TV lineup!
Show #1 - “Fire Island Shore” – The show will be like “Jersey Shore,” but get this: It’s gay! Muscle-gorilla-juiceheads all live together in one house on Fire Island, get drunk and do crazy stuff with their penises to one another! And when these guys talk about fist-pumping, we all know that it will have nothing to do with going out to a club and dancing to house music. Show #2 - “True Blood” – A reality TV show that depicts the risks and consequences associated with unsafe sex. It will have nothing to do with vampires. Show #3 - “How I Met Your Father” – A delightful comedy about a guy who recounts how he met his kids’ gay father. But get this: Because the kids are most likely adopted from a foreign country, you’ll never be able to guess the race of the father in all of the hilarious episodes to follow. And there will be one extremely sexually active character played by, wait for it – a straight guy! Genius! Show #4 - “Everyone Loves Raymond’s Ass” – This actually is the name of a XXX production that I’m working on, but if that flops, it might just make for a hilarious comedy show where a dopey gay guy has to deal with his dysfunctional right-wing family. Cue the
canned laughter right now! Show #5 - “Gill & Wrace” – A show about a gay attorney, Gill, who lives with his feisty, redheaded roommate, Wrace. I’m not sure if it will be a success, but maybe if I throw in two side characters who have some fantastic chemistry (we’ll call them “Kack” and “Jaren”), who knows? This might just be a hit. Show #6 - “CSI: San Francisco” – Each week, a team of homosexual crime scene investigators must solve sexy murder after sexy murder. There will be a lot of zooming in on random fibers and blood spatter that the investigators find on absolutely FABULOUS victims. Also, there will be a treasure trove of sassy quips used by the detectives such as, “Make sure we’re packing major heat to solve this crime,” and, “That corpse ain’t the only thing stiff in this room.” Show #7 - “60 Minutes” – Although the premise of this hour long news show is already fairly gay-friendly (have you seen that super hot dude, Leslie Stahl?), I think we can really punch up the gay factor by having Andy Rooney on for the
entire hour. But, as he complains about things like lawnmowers and rap music, he does it all naked. Pop some Viagra in him before we roll film and you got yourself one of the sexiest gay shows in history. I hope you enjoy the fall lineup! And, if none of those shows interest you, well, I guess you can always watch other gayfriendly networks such as Bravo or Fox News. Happy viewing! H

Bradley Cooper Likes it in the Rear Wearing Socks LOS ANGELES, CA – According to an article in the new issue of Esquire, A-lister Bradley Cooper recalled his gay sex scene with Michael Ian Black in the 2001 cult film, Wet Hot American Summer. In the Esquire interview, Cooper recalled the scene, which took place in an equipment shack: “I remember saying,” says Cooper, “’What if we wear tube socks, and I’ll go up on the wall, and you’ll come from behind me.’ And I said in the scene, ‘Say my name,’ and Michael says, ‘Ben!’ And I say, ‘No! Say my Christian name,’ and he whispers, “Benjamin,’ and that's when I came.” Cooper currently stars in the hit film Hangover 2, now in theaters.H Photo courtesy, People
AFA: “Gays Will Commit Virtual Genocide” TUPELO, MS – American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer recently claimed that the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” will allow gay activists to commit “virtual genocide against Christian soldiers as systematic hate crimes are perpetrated against people of faith in the military”.H
Judge Refuses to Dismiss Discrimination Suit Brought by Bisexual Players SEATTLE, WA – According to the Seattle Times, in April, 2010, three bisexual softball players sued the North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance after it deemed them not gay enough to play in the Gay World Series and stripped their team of its secondplace finish. The lawsuit accused the organization of violating Washington state anti-discrimination laws. During the game, the manager of another team filed a protest under the rule that limits the number of non-gay players. The men contend they were brought, one at a time, into a room containing as many as 25 people and questioned about their sexual preferences. Last week, a federal judge refused a motion from the softball league to dismiss the lawsuit. But the judge did allow the league to keep in place a rule allowing it to limit to two the number of heterosexual members on a team.H Continues on NEWS on Page 15

WJON-AM radio in St. Cloud, Minnesota, a group of Methodist clergy has pledged to marry same-sex couples in Minnesota. According to the radio news report, about 40 Minnesota United Methodist clergy have signed a statement saying they would marry any couple who came to them, including samesex couples. A bishop of the United Methodist Church warned that church discipline does forbid same-sex marriage and clergy who perform them could lose their conference membership or clergy credentials.H
CHICAGO, IL – The Chicago SunTimes reported that 33 same-sex couples showed up at the city’s Millenium Park for a mass civil union ceremony. Several Cook County Circuit Court judges and one minister volunteered to preside over the individual ceremonies. Last Wednesday was the first day the couples could get civil union licenses from the Cook County clerk’s office. Governor Pat Quinn and Mayor Rahm Emanuel spoke at the ceremony. Emanuel noted that he had presided over a civil union earlier in the day.H

Home Depot Tells AFA to Take A Hike
RICHMOND, VA – According to WRIC-TV, community members are upset over the decision to fly the gay pride rainbow flag over Richmond’s Federal Reserve Bank during the month of June. The Richmond bank is a private institution. According to Sally Green, chief operating officer at the bank: “We strongly support a diverse and inclusive culture at the Richmond Fed and have learned that it is important to value and embrace differences, both seen and unseen. We are flying the ‘Pride’ flag as an example of our commitment to the values of acceptance and inclusion.”H
ATLANTA, GA – Home Depot, which has been the target of a boycott sponsored by the American Family Association in response the Home Depot’s participation in numerous gay pride parades and festival, has told the AFA to “take a hike” and recommitted to promoting diversity. According to the AFA, the boycott has been running for months, but last week the AFA’s Executive Vice President, Buddy Smith, appeared at the company’s board meeting and vowed to stop shopping at Home Depot until the company decides to “remain neutral in the culture war.”H
Obama Administration Website Highlights Progress on LGBT Rights WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Obama administration has launched a website highlighting the President’s accomplishments related to the LGBT community. According to a White House statement: “In honor of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) History Month, The White House launched our first ever LGBT specific constituency webpage: http://wh.gov/lgbt. This webpage is designed to keep you updated on how the President and the Administration are ‘Winning the Future’ for LGBT Americans.”H
Vermont Becomes Only State with Full LGBT Equality MONTPELIER, VT – Vermont became the only state that currently offers full legal equality to the LGBT community. Governor Peter Shumlin, who won in a razor-thin recount election last year, signed into law the missing piece of legislation that ensures transgender individuals can get a new birth certificate with the correct gender (instead of amending the original birth certificate). This is critical to ensuring transgender individuals can travel, apply for jobs, apply for licenses, etc., without the worry and hassles of unmatched gender indications.H

Anti-Gay Group Warns About Gay Days at Disney World ORLANDO, FL – The conservative Florida Family Association flew banner planes over Walt Disney World and the Orlando area warning the people of Orlando that Gay Days at Disney World was taking place on June 4. The FFA said that gays and lesbians lead “immoral lifestyles” and spent $7,000 to fly the banners over Orlando for two days. From the FFA site: “Florida Family Association wants to warn these families about this offensive event before they arrive at the Magic Kingdom on Saturday. This airplane banner is our best effort to accomplish that goal … Florida Family Association has asked Disney officials to require Gay Day to be held after hours, like Grad Night or Night of Joy, to avoid offending unsuspecting families who traveled thousands of miles expecting a normal day.”H

All The World’s A Stage Jai Rodriguez Talks Summer Shorts Theatre Festival By TROY MAILLIS Jai Rodriguez, who made a name for himself on Queer Eye For The Straight Guy, is showcasing his comedic and dramatic acting skills this summer for the sunny South Florida audience. After many years on the Broadway stages of New York and making several guest appearances on popular television shows, Jai is currently headlining the 2011 Summer Shorts Theatre Festival. The festival, which will be in the Carnival Studio Theater at Miami's Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts through June 26 and at the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale from June 30 - July 3, features nine short plays with Jai along with several other actors and also features three late-night performances of Rodriguez' solo show Dirty Little Secrets. Jai recently spoke with The Agenda about the upcoming Summer Shorts Festival, expanding his acting chops and shedding his 'Queer Eye' image. You will be in South Florida for the entire month of June for the Summer Shorts. What can we expect? Well, I’m very excited to be down in South Florida this summer. I’m very much looking forward to it. With the “Summer Shorts,” you can expect several short plays that range anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes. Each of the short plays is different and all are a mix of comedy and drama, and I also get to work with other actors. Dirty Little Secrets is my solo show with music and stories about all kinds of things that I get to dish the dirt on.
i
How does performing in several different plays at one time help expand your range as an actor? It’s just a continuation of what I’ve been doing the past several years. I’ve starred on Broadway with Rent and The Producers and have also guest starred on shows like Nip/Tuck. I also recently did a guest appearance on Kathy Bates’ new show Murphy’s Law. It was a very meaty role. It’s one of the biggest acting roles I’ve ever taken on. I finally got to show on television what most New Your City theatre audiences already knew I could do. What was it like working with Kathy Bates on the show? Just from the table read alone, she was very professional and welcoming to the guest stars. When you’re around a legend like that and someone who has been in the business so long, it’s a great experience. In the mornings, I wouldn’t say hi to her first — I would always wait for her to talk to me first. But she was very warm, interesting and complex.
Jai Rodriguez is an actor and musician best known as the culture guide on the Bravo network's Emmy-winning American reality television program Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. He has also co-authored a book with the other Queer Eye hosts. He will be headlining the 2011 Summer Shorts Theatre Festival in Miami through June 26.
With playing gay roles early on or with your role on Queer Eye, did you ever think you would be pigeonholed as just being able to play one type of role? I don’t think if you make a gay film, or if you star in a gay show, you should be pigeonholed or how people see you forever. I think it’s ridiculous, but it does happen. That’s what makes it harder for gay actors to come out. They still have bills to pay and have to find work. It’s easy to say that certain actors should do the right thing and come out, but they are the ones that need to keep their career. What do you look for the most when choosing a role? Well, in the last year and half I’ve really been looking at more and more scripts, and I am shocked at the diversity of roles that are available for
gay actors. You don’t have to be the punch line anymore — you don’t have to be a cliché. The character might just happen to be gay and have nothing to do with the story line. But at the same time, I’m not going in for the roles for they guy who jumps out of a plane and lands on a bus. That’s just not really in my skill set. I mainly look for roles that will stretch me and challenge me as a person. But one thing I did learn from Kathy Griffin is that you should never turn down work. It’s a very competitive market. Has it been hard to shed your image from Queer Eye For The Straight Guy? Is that something you hope to continuously break away from as you move forward in your career? In the past couple of years, I haven’t been asked about it as much. I’ve had beard or stubble for the last few years, so I kind of look different. I also have a lot of tattoos now. I definitely walk into the room now with a familiar presence, but they might not be able to pinpoint me as “the guy from Queer Eye”. In the scripted community, it really hasn’t come up in the last year-and-a-half. It’s not really a show that’s on people’s radar anymore. They will remember it if you talk about it, but it really hasn’t affected my scripted work — thank God! For me now, it’s all about presenting who I’m trying to play as soon as I walk in the room. H

Take a Liking to a Viking in Stockholm with the M.S. Patricia
The Jewel of Scandinavia By PAUL RUBIO While Scandinavian rivalries exist mostly in jest these days, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Iceland still relish in a slight superiority complex over one another. Little debate persists, however, when naming the crown jewel of all Scandinavia – the magnificent city of Stockholm, Sweden. Stockholm is, by far, the most pristine and most stunning of all Scandinavian cities, with endless candy coated streets and an omnipresent royal atmosphere. Though recognized for its diversity, Stockholm’s pure-bred neo-Vikings rule the city – tall and muscular in stature, well endowed, with large, piercing eyes, meticulously defined jaw-lines, full, juicy red lips and baby soft yet thick, light locks of blond hair. The stylish Ken dolls seem to grace every corner of the regal city, giving new meaning to gay Stockholm’s slogan, “Take a liking to a Viking.” Visitors are spoiled for choice in discovering the city’s fairy tale backdrops and riveting architecture. Charming boat rides transport passengers along the Baltic Sea to countless scenic islands. Pedestrian friendly cobblestone streets lead to the majestic Kungliga Slottet (the Royal Palace), while further afield the impressive Vasamuseet (Royal Warship Vasa), the culturally
enticing open-air Skansen Museum, the renowned National Museum of Art and the edgy, provocative Millesgarden, reveal the country’s fascinating history and cultural evolution. From May to September, the rise of the perpetual sun equates to long, contemplative ambles through the “European Green Capital” at all hours of the day and night and a city-wide fervor to make up for lost daylight hours of winter. Nevertheless, in any season, at any hour, Stockholm exudes romance and exclusivity, five-star appeal and world-class liberalism. Now that summer’s officially here, gay Stockholm has revealed himself in full glory. Come early evening, the horny hewolf takes over, approaching the banks of the Riddarfjärden, for cocktails and copious eye-candy at the waterfront bar/café, Mälarpaviljongen. Making up for lost time in winter, the Stockholm party rages seven nights a week for 3 months on either side of Summer Solstice, starting with insane Sundays aboard the M.S. Patricia, fierce Wednesdays at the palatial F12/Ficks, extended weekend chats and chill time at Zipper Lounge and Torget, electronic/house/go-go boy throw down at Libra on Saturdays or the hard-core leather alternative SLM Stockholm. If
you visit Gay & Lesbian Stockholm’s website, www.stockholmtown.com/gaylesbian, you can even download a full gay guide to the city and read about the party scene in detail! But there is definitely more to GLBT Stockholm than hot hook-ups and party shenanigans. As the epicenter of the Scandinavia’s bustling gay life, this hyper-liberal metropolis also courts same-sex couples from abroad to indulge in Scandinavia’s deep-rooted ethos of true equality. Gay weddings are an everyday occurrence at the hotels, churches and historic buildings that line the gingerbread streets of Gamla Stan
(Stockholm’s Old Town) and the regal reception halls within the greater archipelago. A bastion of tolerance, sexual preference ceased to be an issue here decades ago; and hotels such as the celebrated Grand Hotel (www.grandhotel.se/in_english/default.asp) have taken pride in welcoming sophisticated same-sex couples for decades, long before it was legally mandated or globally popular. To get yourself even more excited about experiencing Stockholm and greater Sweden, check out their website at www.visitsweden.com. H Photos courtesy, EU Travel Pictures
Stockholm's population is over 776,000 (Stockholm region: population close to 2 million) and the Swedish capital is located at an elevation of only 200 feet (61 meters).

A Tribute to Dad
June 19th is Father’s Day. American fathers often get a bad rap. They are stereotyped by critics left and right, male and female. All too frequently, the American father is portrayed as a second class parent. Ever notice the difference between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day cards? Mother’s Day cards typically depict warm and fuzzy scenes further emphasizing the importance of the bond between mother and child. In stark contrast, Father’s Day cards, for the most part, are rife with illustrations of duck decoys, antique cars, fishing poles and boats. Please tell me what any of those have to do with being a father. If anyone could find a Father’s Day card showing a father holding his child, please give me the name of the merchant! Disturbingly, most of those insipid greeting cards are designed and penned by … women! Worse yet are the
jean’s kitchen
common images of fathers as the distant or brooding parent, deadbeats, philanderers and abusers. Conversely, research overwhelmingly proves the vast majority of American fathers are none of these. My father was a great guy. He taught me a man is only worth his word, that very often doing the right thing may not be what’s right for you, and we should live life so there will be standing room only at our funeral. “It’s not what you do or who you are that counts. How you’re remembered is what matters most,” he’d announce to me. Dad was absolutely correct. Being self-sufficient made you a “real man” according to Dad. “A real man doesn’t need a wife to take over where his mother left off !” He’s marrying his best friend, not his mother. Dad grilled a mean steak, cleaned the house, did the dishes, read bed time stories and stood guard against the “boogie man”. On the other hand, he fixed the station wagon, remodeled the house and mowed the lawn. He was a fanatic with his old 35 millimeter camera. If I had a dollar for each time Dad called out “Say cheese!” … Thousands of Kodachrome slides from those days make me grateful for that fanaticism. Dad wasn’t a zombie, in a catatonic trance every Sunday watching football. No, instead he took us on real Sunday drives to our favorite haunts. He consistently encouraged me to expand
Mashed Potatoes
In my opinion, the best mashed potatoes are made with "floury" types of potato (like russet), although "waxy" potatoes are sometimes used for a different texture. Butter, olive oil, milk or cream is usually added to improve flavor and texture, and the potatoes are seasoned with salt and pepper, and any other desired herbs and spices. Popular ingredients and seasonings include: garlic, cheese, bacon bits, sour cream, crisp onion or spring onion, mustard, spices such as nutmeg, chopped herbs such as parsley or rosemary, or fresh thyme. A French variation adds egg yolk for pommes duchesse; piped through a pastry tube into wavy ribbons and rosettes, brushed with butter and lightly browned. In low-calorie or non-dairy variations, milk, cream, and butter may be replaced by soup stock or broth, as in this recipe where I use the water used to boil the spuds and then a little butter. • 6 medium russet potatoes, peeled and cubed • 1/4 cup butter (in fact, use as much or as little as you like) • Salt • Fresh ground pepper Place potatoes in a saucepan and cover with water. Cover and bring to a boil; cook for 20-25 minutes or until very
tender. Drain, but don’t discard the water. Add butter, salt and pepper. Mash, adding some of the water until light and fluffy, or to the consistency you want. You are the chef. H

my horizons, be brave enough to take the road less traveled and, along the way, never fail to treat others as I hoped to be treated. That being said, as it’s a common tradition to rescue Mom from her often mundane domestic routine and show appreciation for all she does and has done, the same should be done for Dad! Take him out to dinner. Pay attention to what he does, something – anything – he might feel he must do around the house or wherever, and have it done. Better yet, if you can, DO IT YOURSELF! My guess is your heart will be equally warmed from the glow of gratitude on Dad’s face as his from your thoughtful gesture. To your father, he will believe you really do see and hear him. A truly generous person realizes there is often more to be received by the act of giving, especially from one’s self. A “Thank You Letter” from you for everything your father has given, taught and done through the years will make his heart smile, knowing he’s been appreciated! Mention specific events like a camping trip. He’ll know you haven’t forgotten. If you’re at a loss for what to
do for your father, you need to get to know him better ... now! On that note, I cannot write this without honoring Uncle Jerry. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be writing this column. He was the first person I “came out” too. He saved my life! Love you “Perkins!” I hope the real tribute to Dad, whoever he might be to you, will be the actions of our lives – where who we are and how we behave are shining testaments to the love and lessons our fathers instilled in each of us. Build Bigger Muscles In Less Time! Shorter, higher intensity workouts can lead to bigger and better results! By TOM BONANTI Want to build quality muscle, but just don’t have a lot of time to spend in the gym? Do you get discouraged because your work schedule prohibits you from dedicating endless hours to a bodybuilding regime? Are you one of those rare breed who believe that there is more to life than working out? Well, here’s good news: You can build quality muscle and improve overall fitness in less time than you think! Here’s a routine that won’t fail, if you’re really willing to work and sweat. I call this brain-child The Slam-Bam Routine and it has two great things in its favor. Firstly, you work your physique intensely, but in the briefest period of time (30 minutes and your ass is outa there!). Secondly, your testosterone levels start to drop between 45 and 60 minutes into a heavy weight training session as cortisol (a bad, stressful hormone) levels rise. Because sessions are shorter, you can make the most of your natural juices as you avoid overtraining! The workout uses “giant sets,” a bodybuilding concept that employs a multiple number of sets in a minimal amount of time. Giant sets can be performed in several ways, but with this routine you will do at least 5 sets back to back, each on a
different muscle group. Use weight that will challenge you for 12 reps and remember to rest only 30 seconds between sets. When performing this routine, have everything set before you get started so you can blast through the workout with no interruptions. Now, let’s slam through upper body. The first exercise of the five set cycle is the incline dumbbell press. This exercise works upper and outer chest. After a 30 second rest, move on to the wide grip lat pull down for that “V” shaped back. Seated dumbbell overhead presses are next for shoulders. Pump up those triceps with a set of 15-20 dips. Finish round one of this monster routine with a set of standing dumbbell curls for biceps and forearms. After a two minute rest, perform this giant set one or possibly two more times depending upon your time and energy. Up your weight on each set by about 2 per cent if you can manage it. Adhere to proper form with each exercise. Slam-bam, you are done with your upper body. You can also perform giant sets for lower body on the same day as upper body, depending upon your strength and stamina. Or you can work upper body and lower body on different days
depending upon how much time you have. Remember, this whole workout is intense, but it should only take you 30 to 45 minutes, tops, to perform. Use squats, leg presses, leg curls, stiffleg dead lifts, lunges and a high repetition calf raise (15-20 reps) to slam quads, hamstrings, calves and butt. Perform 2-3 giant sets for legs. Rest 30 seconds between exercises and two to three minutes between giant sets (a little more rest may be needed for legs as compared to upper body). Work abdominals by doing crunches at anytime during these workouts or on off days. The Slam-Bam Routine can benefit both upper and lower body without spending endless hours in the gym. Both upper and lower body sections need to be trained twice a week. Remember to rest between training sessions. There you have it – a new workout, bigger muscles, less time in the gym and more time to spend at the pool or beach
with friends this summer! For more tips on how to turn up the heat on your summertime workouts don’t hesitate to contact me TrainerTomB@aol.com. H

Big City Ambiance & Big City Flavors Big City Tavern on Las Olas Blvd in Fort Lauderdale By TIM SLIVINSKI After enjoying a spectacularly sunny Sunday afternoon soaking up the sun and bopping to the beats at the Depot Cabana Bar’s inaugural poolside Tdance, my partner and I decided we required something a little more sedate and out of the sun for Sunday dinner. Something pulled us toward Las Olas and, as we meandered down the street, we commented on that place we always walk by but have never gone into: Big City Tavern. We decided to rectify that situation on the spot and walked in and requested a table. Though Big City has the look and the energy of a tavern in a place like New York City, if you request to be seated in one of the oversized booths, you can sink into your own relaxing space. After ordering a martini for me and a craft beer for my partner, we realized that the sun had made us famished. Our server promptly informed us of that day’s featured crispy flatbread, and we said “bring it.” The flatbread was topped with salmon and feta cheese in a sort of variation on bagels and lox. When it arrived, we each quickly grabbed a slice and tasted. The natural saltiness of the feta played well against the tender sweetness of the salmon. The crispy crust was definitely firm enough to hold the toppings
because a wimpy, limp flatbread is never a winner in my book. It did not take us long to consume each bite of its savory — sweet — salty goodness. When it’s time to order entrees, Big City allows you many options so you can eat as light or as hearty as your appetite dictates. Feeling perhaps a need to be healthy, my partner ordered the Maryland jumbo lump crab cake from the appetizer portion of the menu along with a market greens salad. The crab cake was filled with large pieces of tender crab, and the cake itself was savory and not overly “bready” because of too much filler. He particularly liked the piquant flavor that the accompanying dill-lime tartar sauce added to the delicate flavors of the crab cake. His salad was crispy fresh, no wilted limp greens, with a light Dijon-shallot vinaigrette dressing. Feeling the need for something a bit heartier, but also desiring seafood (maybe it was all that afternoon time near the pool), I opted for the pecan crusted snapper. I will admit in full disclosure that I am freak for nut encrusted seafood. It seems to allow the fish to remain succulent and moist while adding a crunchy texture as contrast to the tenderness of the fish. When it
arrived, I was greeted by a more than ample serving whose aromas were savory, nutty and sweet. When I put my fork into the fish, it was juicy and steaming, not at all overdone. Another aspect I liked was that I was able to eat it without all the pecans falling off with each forkful. The roasted winter vegetables that accompanied the snapper offered a nice touch of earthiness to the plate. I had no trouble joining the clean plate club that evening. Big City Tavern offers choices in sandwiches, pizzas and pastas, as well as in beef, poultry and seafood entrees. It also offers a late night limited menu on Fridays and Saturdays for those evenings when you may have attended a show or concert and have the munchies afterwards. Outdoor seating along Las Olas is available, and Big City also offers a vibrant bar area to the left as you walk in the main door. Service is friendly and attentive, and the booths allow you sink back and enjoy your experience. If you have walked past Big City Tavern and not yet walked in, maybe it’s time to give it a try. I know I will not be a mere “passerby” any longer! H

Old Actors Never Retire
They Just Do One Person Shows By WARREN DAY
Lena Horne did for several years and which Elaine Stitch is still doing. Other times they are fictional works where the sole actor plays all the parts, as Lily Tomlin did in The Search for Intelligent Life in the Universe. Most often, these shows consist of a single actor playing a famous person, i.e., Henry Fonda as the lawyer Clarence Darrow, or Tovah Feldshuh as either Golda Mier or Talluhah Bankhead (now there’s a stretch for you). These live performances can be great theater when the actor and the historical person seem a natural fit for each other, as with Hal Holbrook in Mark Twain Tonight. Other times, all the magical ingredients can seem to be there, as when Vincent Price played Oscar Wilde, but actually end up offering a rather bland and predictable evening, something the real Mr. Wilde never did. As Roosevelt, Ed Asner falls somewhere between success and failure. He doesn’t fit FDR in age, looks, or accent; neither does he have that patrician air that was so much a part of this upperclass, but populist, president. The fact that his performance works as well as it does is a tribute to his acting chops, as when he captures the joy in
being able to stand for a few seconds without his canes (FDR had polio), or the believable and quick transition to anguish he makes at another point. Another plus is that Mr. Asner’s admiration for the President who led us through the depression and World War II shines through and is contagious. The audience obviously had great admiration for Ed Asner, and gave him a standing ovation at the end, but I think that was more for what Roosevelt had done in real life and for what Asner had done in other parts. Whether it be the world premiere of a new comedy, as they will do in July with Stuf by Michael McKeever, or the regional premiere of a recent Tony-winning drama, as in God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza this past May, the professional Caldwell Theatre in Boca Raton presents engrossing productions that usually can’t be found anywhere else in Florida. Such was the case the first week in June, when they presented the legendary actor Ed Asner in FDR by Dore Schary. Legendary is not too strong a word for this veteran actor of stage, screen and, especially, television, who has won seven Emmys and five Golden Globes, and was recently the lead voice actor in the Academy Award Best Animated Feature Up. At the age of 81, most actors have retired by necessity, but Mr. Asner has been making appearances around the country playing our 32nd president of the United States in a demanding and grueling one-man show. Over the last couple of decades, it’s been something of a phenomenon to have performers travel in one-person productions. Sometimes these shows are an evening recap of their careers, as
Award Winning actor, Ed Asner, will be appearing in FDR as President Roosevelt at the Caldwell Theatre

The Designer, The Man, The Legend Discover Tom Ford in Miami By ERIC CHRISTIAN The city of Miami is making a name for itself in the fashion world. With many boutiques opened, up such as Y3, Christian Louboutin, Maison Martin Margiela, Marni, Kiton and Roger Vivier, to name a few, and brands such as Stella McCartney, Thomas Wylde, Balenciaga and more surfacing, I think it’s easy to consider Miami a fashionable city with haute fashions and designs to choose from. There are, however, still a lot of boutiques and brands that are relative to the wealthy, upper class that are not available here in South Florida. One in particular is the Tom Ford collection for men. An interesting fact, but rarely advertised, is that the collection can be found only at the Webster Miami Beach. Thanks to the amazing buyers of the Webster, they were able to bring such a classy, sophisticated, bespoke brand available to those that can afford it in Miami Beach. The boutique bolsters brands such as Lanvin, Gucci, YSL for Men, to name a few, but if you do a little searching, you’ll uncover a world of beautiful blazers in white, navy and cobalt blue. You’ll also discover a few pinstripe, three-piece suits with plaid bow ties that remind you of the sartorial men of New York
and London. You can also get custom-fitted services as well, and find shoes such as boots, loafers and oxfords. One of the most popular shoes is the bi-colored oxford loafer. It comes in black and white, chocolate and white, or all chocolate or all black. All of this and more can be found in New York on Madison Avenue – or even in Beverly Hills – but let’s be grateful to at least find some of it here at the Webster Miami Beach. At the end of the day, it’s all about finding what you want. Sometimes in Miami, it’s hard to find that rare fashion, but today is a different day, because you have just discovered Tom Ford in Miami! For more information on the Tom Ford collection, visit www.tomford.com or stop by and take a peek of the collection at the Webster Miami Beach, located at 1220 Collins Ave. For fashion, styling, editorial and tips on where to shop, contact style expert Eric Christian at eric@styleconciergemiami.com and www.styleconciergemiami.com. Retirement Party For a Friend John Lyons of Mona’s to Retire One of Fort Lauderdale’s veteran mixologists is retiring. John Lyons, who has held court at Mona’s Bar on East Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale for the last 12 years, is retiring due to health problems. Mona’s owner, Jerry Schultz, is throwing a “let’s send John on his merry little way” retirement party this Saturday, June 11, from Noon till 4pm. It’s somewhat of a “FUNraiser” for the veteran, who was recently diagnosed with bone and lung cancer. There will be a cookout on the patio beginning at 3pm and light entertainment during the afternoon. A jar will be set up on the pool table for those who wish to throw in a “retirement” gift. John Lyons has spent most of his adult life serving up favorite beverages to thirsty customers at former watering holes such as Bus Stop, Everglades, 825 and the Haymarket. Thousands of people know him as John ‘Mary’ Lyons, and know his friendly manner. He has been a positive fixture at Mona’s, discussing the day’s events and just being a friend. So, put it on your calendar: This
Saturday, Noon till 4PM at Mona’s. John will be there around 2pm.
Enough is Enough Many Miami Beach residents have had it with the annual Hip Hop Memorial Day weekend bash. They are getting tired of the crime and overcrowded conditions the event brings. This past Memorial Day weekend saw an influx of crime on South Beach that rivaled a war zone with shootings, killings and uncontrolled crowds. Many South Beach residents left the island for the weekend and it’s costing the City of Miami Beach a bundle for added police presence, including off-duty police from other jurisdictions. Expect fireworks from residents and some businesses, which were almost destroyed, at the next Miami Beach city commission meetings.

Poolside at The Depot; Scandals Ponies Up for Stonewall By CLIFF DUNN Events for Stonewall Pride Weekend are cropping up faster than one of Jonathan Bleiweiss’ victims, with a number of local establishments and watering holes teaming up to support charitable and service organizations, while serving up products to help shore up the summer slows. To The Depot Cabana Bar & Grill’s Stonewall Saturday Pool Party on Saturday, June 18, you can add the first annual Pride Stride, a Drag Race benefiting Broward House, Broward County’s largest and oldest HIV/AIDS service organization. In addition to Scandals Saloon and The Stable, interested parties can sign up at Bill’s, Sidelines Sports Bar, Matty’s On The Drive, Georgie’s Alibi and New Moon – all of Wilton Manors. The Drag Race includes prizes for the first to cross the finish line (good luck with that one, sisters), the most money raised in donor pledges and the highest heels. There is nothin’ like a dame. Speaking of Scandals and The Stable, co-owner Ken Kelley is proud that his venerable flagship bar on N.E. 6th Avenue in Wilton Manors is the only official kick-off party for 2011 Stonewall Pride. The bar, which opened in 2003 and landed in its present digs in 2005, will hold its Stonewall kick-off event on Friday, June 17.
Let the SunServe In The non-profit SunServe is the recipient of a three-year federal grant for their Promoting LGBTQ Youth, Self-Esteem, Self Advocacy and Self-Resiliency (SSR) program. The 501(c)(3) social service agency serves South Florida’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) community – with a special emphasis on those in financial need, minorities, youth, seniors, families and those with life-challenging physical or emotional conditions. The grant in question, totaling around $222,000, is geared towards preventing or minimizing teenage suicide. SunServe’s other community efforts – many of which benefit straight as well as gay persons – involve numerous educational and outreach projects, counseling, support groups and a Senior Center.
Stonewalling Wilton Drive The Gables Wilton Park luxury apartments on Wilton Drive will be hosting an exhibit by Fort Lauderdale’s Stonewall National Museum & Archives the week of June 13 to 19, during the run-up to the Stonewall
Festival and Parade on Sunday, June 19. The free exhibit will focus on the history of the LGBT rights movement (or the Gay Agenda, if you’d rather), leading back to New York City’s Stonewall Riots. Find more info on the exhibit at StonewallNationalMuseum.org. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
It’s a Gay World, After All The forward-thinkers at the Florida Family Association (FFA - an anagram with an entirely different connotation among the LGBT Levi’s and Leather Set) spent $7,000 last weekend to charter a banner plane “warning” the groundbound about Gay Days events being held in and around Walt Disney World. Operating in ten-hour shifts on both Saturday and Sunday, June 4 and 5, the plane towed airborne banners that read: “WARNING GAY DAY AT DISNEY 6/4” and “WARNING GAY PRIDE DAY AT DISNEY 2DAY.” The FFA, which bills itself as an organization dedicated to “improving America's moral environment,” posted on its Web site: “30,000 children along with their unsuspecting parents will be confronted with the reality of witnessing over 15,000 Gay Pride Day revelers when they enter the Magic Kingdom on June 4, 2011.” They added: “Florida Family Association wants to warn these families about this offensive event before they arrive at the Magic Kingdom on Saturday.” (This puts me in mind the words of the Great Mouseketeer himself, Walt Disney, who said – appropriately enough: "We are not trying to entertain the critics. I'll take my chances with the public.")
Overheard “We will want to take out a $2 million life insurance policy against the possibility you die before the five years are over. Does that work?” “Yes, I’m good with that. Just don’t kill me.” – Conversation between potential business investors with local Captain of Industry at Rosie’s Bar & Grill in Wilton Manors (names withheld)
