GLAAD Board Members Resign Six Follow President Jarret Barrios’ Resignation By ALEX VAUGHN Six board members of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation have resigned amid the fallout over the organization's letter in support of AT&T’s proposed bid for wireless rival TMobile, their letters follow hot on the heels of the announcement that GLAAD president Jarret Barrious had resigned. Amid talk, some board members were said to have resigned because of concerns that GLAAD failed to adhere to its conflict of interest standards and to protest GLAAD's failure to protect its president, Jarrett Barrios, who submitted his letter of resignation to the group Saturday after he came under fire from the LGBT blogosphere after an appearance on the Michelangelo Signorile show by former GLAAD board of directors co-chair Laurie Perper, who questioned a series of official statements released by Barrios’ office supporting telecommunications giant AT&T.

“The GLAAD Board has received Jarrett Barrios’ resignation letter and discussed this among other topics on our call. We expect at our next Board meeting set for Wednesday to reach a conclusion on all issues so that Mr. Barrios can begin to help The Board manage transition and bring on his successor,” the organization said in a statement. Barrios had signed the letter GLAAD sent to the FCC in support of the wireless mega-deal. GLAAD board member Gary Bitner confirmed in an email to Politico on Tuesday that he had resigned. Five other board members — including Randi Weingarten, the president of the American Federation of Teachers — also have submitted their resignations. Weingarten said her resignation "had nothing to do" with the AT&T/T-Mobile deal in an email to Politico. ‘GLAAD’ continues on Page 8

‘GLAAD’ continued from COVER

The six former board members submitted a joint statement that said they resigned from the organization's board for “various reasons,” but declined to comment on those reasons because they say "there's been too much unfair and false information spread about GLAAD" recently. “We believe that GLAAD plays a vital role in our community and wish it only the best," the statement said. "We also thank GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios for his service and his 20 plus years he has committed to social justice and the LGBT community… He still has a wonderful career ahead of him." The resignations of six prominent GLAAD board members comes as a blow to the organization and may be followed by additional departures from the gay and lesbian advocacy group. The person familiar with the resignations said about a third or half of the board may leave the organization by the end of the week. The six GLAAD board members a source said resigned are: Bitner; Weingarten; Jocelyn Bramble, an associate at the law firm Dewey & LeBoeuf; Kelly Dermody, a partner at Lieff, Cabraser, Heimann & Bernstein in San Francisco; Humberto Mata, founder of nonprofit Fundación VIHDA in Ecuador; and James Walker, a commercial real estate executive. The names of all six are no longer listed in the board of directors section of GLAAD’s website, bringing the current number of GLAAD board members, including officers, down to 23. “Jarrett Barrios was an extraordinary leader at GLAAD, and my resignation had nothing to do with his fine work,” Bitner, a partner at the Bitner Goodman public relations firm, said in an email to Politico. “A number of other factors were involved, chief among them the huge time commitment.” The former board members also expressed concern over the treatment of Barrios throughout the AT&T/T-Mobile flare-up. Barrios’s tenure at GLAAD has been the target of gay bloggers and others in recent weeks since GLAAD’s letter to the FCC was filed. Leading gay activists called for Barrios to resign after Perper’s claims and after it was revealed that he sent a letter to the FCC in January 2010 that questioned the agency’s net neutrality rules, which AT&T had opposed. Barrios later asked for that letter to be withdrawn from the public record and told the FCC it was submitted without his permission. Troup Coronado, a former employee and registered lobbyist for AT&T, is said to have approached several gay rights organizations seeking support for the AT&T/T-Mobile deal. In May, he approached the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce to ask representatives of those groups to sign a letter that voiced support for AT&T’s bid. NGLCC, which represents business owners in the gay community, had always supported the merger because the group believes it will expand wireless networks and benefit their members, according to Nelson. “We have a strong record of weighing in on issues that are pertinent to our constituents — to business owners, to entrepreneurs,” he said. “We take the principled stand even when it’s not the popular stand.” The Task Force declined to sign the letter because “a merger between these two companies is not an issue that we’re focused on,” Rea Carey, executive director of the task force said. U.N. Votes to Protect Gay Rights GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – The United Nations Human Rights Council passed a resolution which condemned discrimination against gays and lesbians. The United States voted in favor of the resolution. H

Gay Presidential Candidate Accuses Mitt Romney of Voter Fraud BELLMONT, MA – Little known G.O.P. presidential candidate Fred Karger has accused Republican presidential front-runner, Mitt Romney of voter fraud. According to Mother Jones, Karger alleges that Romney voted for Scott Brown for U.S. Senator in Massachusetts, though Romney is no longer a resident of Massachusetts. Karger has filed a complaint with the state’s election officials. According to Karger, in 2008, Romney bought a $12.5-million home in La Jolla, California, where he became a regular at California political events and even campaigned for California gubernatorial candidate, Meg Whitman. Karger also claims that in April 2009, the Romenys sold their Belmont, Massachusetts, home for $3.5 million and registered to vote from the address in the unfinished 8,000 square foot basement of their son’s home, also located in Belmont. In May 2009, the Romney’s made their primary residence in a $10-million estate in New Hampshire. Fraudulent voter registration in Massachusetts carries a penalty of $10,000 and up to five years in jail. The voter residency law in Massachusetts’ defines residence as “where a person dwells and which is the center of his domestic, social, and civil life.” Karger has a history of tormenting Romney. As the first openly gay Republican to seek the party's presidential nomination, Karger has taken aim at his opponents' stand on gay rights from the start. But Romney has also proven a useful stand-in for the Mormon Church, which Karger has never forgiven for funding California’s Proposition 8, the ballot initiative that banned gay marriage in the state. Karger was instrumental in exposing the church's involvement in getting the initiative on the ballot and ultimately passed. Karger says he finds it strange that a person worth $500 million would really

be living in his son's basement. Investigating this mystery was right up Karger's alley. He spent 30 years working for one of California’s preeminent GOP consulting firms, doing opposition research for candidates. H

“Days” to Get Gay Storyline HOLLYWOOD, CA – According to Entertainment Weekly, the long-running daytime soap opera, “Days of Our Lives,” will get its first gay storyline. Archbishop Claims Same-Sex Marriage is a Communist Threat NEW YORK, NY – N.Y. Archbishop Timothy Dolan warned of a Communist threat should New York pass a law permitting same-sex marriage, saying that its passage redefines “natural law”. Dolan posed in his blog: “Last time I consulted an atlas, it is clear we are living in New York, in the United States of America – not in China or North Korea. In those countries, government presumes daily to ‘redefine’ rights, relationships, values, and natural law. There, communiqués from the government can dictate the size of families, who lives and who dies, and what the very definition of ‘family’ and ‘marriage’ means. But, please, not here! Our country’s founding principles speak of rights given by God, not invented by government, and certain noble values – life, home, family, marriage, children, faith – that are protected, not re-defined, by a state presuming omnipotence. Catholic Online praises Dolan for “pushing back The Darkness in New York.” H

Security Guard Warns Lesbian Couple Not to Kiss MINNEAPOLIS, MN – WCCO, CBS4 in Minneapolis, reported that a security guard at the Minneapolis Target Field told a lesbian couple not to kiss and to “adhere to the Ten Commandments.” The couple, Taylor Campione and Kelsi Culpepper, briefly kissed as they separated to go to the bathroom at a recent Minnesota Twins game when they were told they couldn’t kiss by the security guard. The couple have filed a complaint with the states Human Rights Department. H

N.J. Governor Says Gays Aren’t Sinners TRENTON, N.J. – New Jersey’s Republican Governor Chris Christie

said that he believes that gays are not sinners when he was asked by CNN’s Piers Morgan if he believes homosexuality is a sin. “I've always believed that people are born with the previous disposition to be homosexual. So I think if someone is born that way it's very difficult to say that it's a sin,” said Christie. Christie then added that he doesn't believe that gays should be given the freedom to marry: “I believe we can have civil unions that can help to give the same type of legal rights to same-sex couples that marriage gives them.” H

Glitter Bomb Redux SAN FRANCISCO, CA/MINNEAPOLIS, MN – GOP presidential candidates Tim Pawlenty and Michele Bachmann became the second and third Republican hopefuls to be glitter-bombed by a protester at an appearance in San Francisco. Governor and Mayor Lobby for One More Vote ALBANY, N.Y. – The New York State Senate is one vote away from passing legislation allowing same-sex marriage in the State of New York. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg have been busy lobbying Republican members of the State Assembly to gain the one vote needed for final passage. The bill has already passed the State Assembly. Though Democratic members of the Assembly from the State of New York are unified in the passing of the measure, it’s the more conservative members from upstate New York are keeping the measure from passing. Cuomo's bill protects clergy and religious groups from having to participate in gay marriages. H

Super Bowl Hero Would Trade Championship to Stop Same-Sex Marriage ALBANY, NY – David Tyree, hero of the Giants’ Super Bowl upset over the Patriots in the 2007 Super Bowl said he’d trade the win to block gay marriage according to the New York Daily News. Tyree is best remembered in his career for his miraculous late-game catch in Super Bowl XLII against the Patriots, trapping the ball against his helmet while being pulled down by New England safety Rodney Harrison. He said that gay marriage would lead to anarchy and that the morality of a country is defined by its law. He further said he doesn't oppose benefits for gay couples, but to call it marriage is not something he would ever agree with or think that the government has the right to change the definition of marriage. Playing the Waiting Game That wonderful old saying comes to mind, ‘why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?’ attributed usually to a man who doesn’t want to get married when he can get all the benefits without the cost, so to speak. Well, there is a slight shift in the community. More men are apparently waiting before they ‘do the deed’ so as to not be seen as that infamous skank! So, we get the ‘why ‘in the theory, but in practice it’s a different story. In a community driven greatly by sex and men and women’s needs, there is no doubt that things are different in the gay community. Hook up sites, bars notorious for their ease in acquiring a string-free night of passion, sex clubs and bathhouses all make sex readily and extremely easily available. So, you have decided you want more – the whole works: picket fence, his and his SUVs in the driveway, etc. Therefore, you have to play it differently than you did with the guy you met last week that didn’t call. You meet the new guy at a bar or online and you tell him you want to wait a bit before you do the deed. Fantastic, pioneering even, but why are you waiting? To see if you click? OK, so that’s a couple of dates to see if there is a long term future; maybe a couple more to see if you take perfect portraits together and have the same taste in interiors … too long! The chances are, he has been bumping uglies with someone else while you have been waiting. There is nothing wrong with not jumping in bed straight away; in fact, it’s unique … novel even. But overplay your hand and you lose the whole game. No one buys a car (or the cow for that matter) without a test drive. Whether you like it or not, the reality of gay relationships is sex is a huge part of them; no matter what people say, it just is. Be realistic. If you have met the guy online and he was up for it, or you’ve seen him in the bars before with different guys, let’s not be naïve and presume because you are making him wait to fulfil a promise you have no made to change your habits, that he is doing the same. We all get to a stage in life, whether it be at 22 or 62, that we want to settle down. But for all the equality, there are different dynamics in gay and straight relationships. You wouldn’t marry the girl you met at the

bar who put out on the first night … then of course I am reminded of the ‘urban relationship legend’ where someone did and they went on to be a happily married couple and lived happily ever after. The same myth occurs on both sides of the gay coin, but more often than not it’s not the guys that waited six weeks to have it off, but those that met across a crowded bar or on a hook up site … hooked up and haven’t been apart since. The other downfall with the waiting game is what happens when you wait and all the other pieces click. You like the same things, your opposite views attract, you make the picture perfect couple, in fact, and then it happens: You have planned it all out, candles, soft music, and woops – he is dire; not just bad, but kisses like a fish and the passion you shared over a French movie didn’t translate in any shape or form into the French kiss you had been expecting to explode into hours of passion. Well, you are royally screwed. He is smitten now and you are unsatisfied and quickly realize you just wasted six weeks falling for someone you have now massacred any feelings of lust for because he was just bad. Uh oh … what if the flip has occurred and I actually know someone who had this. They waited and waited, did the deed and the next day he dumped him. ‘It’s not you. It’s me. I am not in that place right now’. Translation: ‘You are crap in bed and I am disappointed and annoyed I wasted so much time!’ Now, that said of course, it could be wonderful and perfect – that special time; but the next wonder is, ‘was he really waiting?’ If he is online and seeking a hook up, the chances are he is happy to wait while he gets his fun and his needs met on the side. Don’t worry – he will do the dinner thing and enjoy the romance, but he has needs and any man will satisfy them. By no means am I suggesting the way around these dilemmas is to sleep first and ask questions later, but read the signals. If you are paying for dinner every time and he’s holding out because he wants to wait, consider this realistically. The majority of gay men don’t wait, so why is he? He may genuinely be trying to make sure he gets a real relationship

Alex Vaughn or, more likely, he is enjoying the fruits, without offering any. The reality is also that the waiting game puts a huge amount of pressure and strain on both people involved. Consider your wait carefully; where do you think he is on it? If this is a match made in heaven, you will both know when passion takes over and the time is right. Waiting for the sake of it kills the passion and I promise you does not make you come across as an angel or the perfect guy. Stick to the rule that heterosexuals follow roughly: expect no sex until earliest date three, and that means date, not third time you see them in the same bar on the same night. Use the waiting time wisely, get to know them, what they like in all areas of life, including the bedroom … another waiting pitfall is when the night of the deed arrives and you discover to your utter surprise that your perfect Architectural Digest husband is, in fact, into cross dressing S&M with candles and apparatus, you can’t believe you have never seen this before! So, back to the rules: Three dates minimum, BUT follow your instincts. If, by the third date, you aren’t ready, then don’t rush into it; but once you hit date six – or worse, week six – do it or don’t. If you aren’t ready by then, you won’t ever be and the chances are he’s playing the Action Game with someone else! H

Yes, as you noted, there were problems the first year but we all worked together to overcome many obstacles. One dealt with parking at the high school. Log Cabin Club went to school board member Judy Budnick (R), who was a friend, asked for help, and she managed to alleviate the resistance. We secured access and parking in the lot was successfully arranged. The Sunshine Athletic Association took on the responsibility of the Stonewall Picnic at John Lloyd State Park and there was lots of excitement and camaraderie with challenging games and fun awards. We experienced a wide range of team spirit and outreach early on and as bumpy as the road may have appeared miracles did happen and a legacy lives on come rain or shine. SINCERELY, ANDY EDDY

The Observationist

God’s Grand Design Didn’t Include Prada Recently, it has come to my attention that I am simply just not keeping up with the rest of the gay community when it comes to wearing designer threads. It’s no secret that gay men are known for being on the cutting edge of fashion, and trust me, I am trying my damndest to keep up. A few weeks ago I was at a beach party that was frequented by a rather large percentage of gay men. I was excited to sit back and relax while a throng of gay men would be undoubtedly running around in the sand while jumping up (hopefully in slow motion) to smack a volleyball or playfully splash one another (in even slower motion) while gallivanting in the ocean. Because this fantasy of male models couldn’t be erased from my mind, I was convinced that I had to come up with the perfect beach outfit. After washing some laundry that smelled like either really sweaty gym socks or really good cheese (it all depends on your perspective), I made sure to assemble an ensemble that would make guys say, “Hey, that guy looks good.” My simple mind was able to come up with a tight fitting white polo, some nicely pressed navy blue shorts, and some grey Top-Siders. It was very New England gay. When I arrived at the party, I noticed another guy wearing similar shorts. As he was attractive and I wanted to make con-

versation for no reason other than to meet him, I said, “Hey, are those shorts from J. Crew?” What was I met with? “Ummm, no,” the handsome man said with a tone that indicated I had just said something offensive. “They’re Prada.” My response? “Oh,” I replied while backing slowly away from the man with the designer shorts. I realized that my sartorial faux pas had offended him. Defeated and feeling poor, I walked away and retreated to the bar to buy some booze … cheap booze. That’s when I started to wonder…where in the Sam Hill are all the homosexuals of the world coming up with money to buy designer clothes!? Why is everyone in South Florida living in the lap of luxury while I slave away at my job for 12 hours a day only to return home and eat a tin of cat food? Granted the cat food really helps cut down on the carb intake, but seriously, I would like to taste a bit of the sweet life once in awhile. I guess it all comes down to me just not being lucky in life when it comes to being able to afford luxuries like gold plated flatware or running water. But maybe that’s okay. Maybe I should just be thankful that I wasn’t born missing any limbs or, even worse, being a part of that traveling band of gypsies referred to as “The Palin

Throngs of Gay Men attending the Muscle Beach Party on Miami Beach Photo courtesy, Miami New Times

Family”. The point is that as much as the guy in Prada may make me feel inadequate for half a minute, I have to also recognize that I’ve got a lot to be thankful for. So, next time someone tells me that they’re shirt is D&G when I mistake it for something I saw just like it on the Kohl’s clearance rack, instead of slinking away like a disgraced serf, I shall look them in the eye and say, “Well, it looks very nice. And might I add

that I am thankful that I have not one, but two, working legs.” Maybe that’s a weird way to look at it, but at least it’s an affordable one. H

Political Analysis Jon Huntsman, Jr.: Good for Gays? By CLIFF DUNN (Disclosure: During the 2004 election cycle, the author, while working as a broadcast journalist, news director and political analyst in the Intermountain West, made the acquaintance of Jon Huntsman, Jr., then the Republican candidate for Utah governor, as well as his Democrat opponent, Scott Matheson, Jr. Following his election and inauguration, the author maintained his professional relationship with thenGovernor Huntsman, who was on record as being a “fan” of the author’s political talk show.) On Tuesday, Jon Huntsman, Jr., the former Utah governor and U.S. Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, announced his candidacy for the 2012 Republican nomination for President of the United States. What does this mean for LGBT Americans in the event the 51-year old wins his party’s nod for the White House? Although not a household name in much of the country, Huntsman’s family has deep roots in Utah, where his father is wellknown as the founder of Huntsman Chemical (now Huntsman Corporation), as well as a philanthropist and humanitarian whose contributions to help support the homeless, underprivileged and ill have exceeded $1.2 billion. Huntsman, Sr., is also the founder and principal benefactor of the Huntsman Cancer Institute, and was the recipient of the American Cancer Society’s 2008 Medal of Honor for Cancer Philanthropy. The younger Huntsman’s Republican pedigree covers decades of service at both the state and national levels. He served as a staff assistant in Ronald Reagan’s White House, and was appointed by President George H.W. Bush to serve first as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce, and later as United States Ambassador to Singapore, a post he held from 1992 to 1993. He was appointed Deputy U.S. Trade

Representative under President George W. Bush, and helped guide the accession of China and Taiwan into the World Trade Organization (WTO). In 2004, Huntsman was elected Governor of Utah, winning re-election four years later with nearly 78% of the vote. During his time in office, Utah was named the "Best Managed State in America" by the Pew Research Center. Huntsman resigned as governor on August 11, 2009, a year into his second term, to accept the appointment by President Barack Obama to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to China. The conservative publication The Weekly Standard called Huntsman as “impressive as [Louisiana Governor Bobby] Jindal, though far more moderate.” (That was in 2009, months before the governor resigned to accept Obama’s posting to the Middle Kingdom; fast forward two years to this past January, when Weekly Standard blogger Jay Cost opined that “Huntsman destroyed any chance of being president when he accepted this ambassadorship.”) Those “far more moderate” credentials were in full view in February 2009, when Huntsman’s office announced – to widespread shock amongst the GOP’s Far Less Moderate Set – his support for civil unions at a time when 70% of Utah residents opposed them. At that time, the activist group Equality Utah was supporting five bills in the Utah legislature that were sponsored by two gay lawmakers. Three of the bills called for greater parity in the areas of housing, employment, inheritance rights, hospitalization and medical-decision making. The other two pieces of legislation would have created a domestic partner registry for same-sex couples through the repeal of sections of the state’s constitutional marriage amendment. All five bills lacked one crucial commonality: the backing of the all-influential Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

(By comparison, in November of that year, the Salt Lake City Council unanimously passed ordinances that barred discrimination in housing and employment on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity; passage came after the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints announced its support for the ordinances. That support came following months of back-room negotiations between mid-level LDS leaders and leaders of Utah’s LGBT community. Said the Church’s public affairs spokesman: "The Church supports this ordinance because it is fair and reasonable and does not do violence to the institution of marriage.") Huntsman’s support for the same-sex rights legislation came with a price tag: Scheduled to attend a Michigan GOP event in April 2009, his invitation to speak was withdrawn by a Republican county chairwoman after his support for same-sex civil unions was made public. At the time, Campaign for Michigan Families Chairman Gary Glenn said that "Kent County's principled stand sends a strong message nationwide that grass roots conservatives will not embrace liberals who want to abandon the GOP platform's commitment to traditional family values." This line is very much in keeping with the views of the majority of social conservatives, many of whom will comprise the voters Huntsman will need to court during the 2012 primary season. Huntsman may already be practicing the same sort of gymnastics his fellow Latter-day Saint, and fellow ex-governor, Mitt Romney, is engaged in over his spearheading of health care reform in Massachusetts – what fellow Republican presidential hopeful Tim Pawlenty has dubbed “Obamneycare.” Addressing the Faith and Freedom Coalition Conference in Washington, Huntsman tried to shore up his credentials as a social conservative. In remarks, he

highlighted his record on abortion, saying he had "signed every pro-life bill that came to my desk" while governor. Huntsman further said, "I signed the bill that made second-trimester abortions illegal, and increased the penalty for doing so. I signed the bill to allow women to know the pain an abortion causes an unborn child. I signed the bill requiring parental permission for abortion. I signed the bill that would trigger a ban on abortions in Utah if Roe v. Wade was overturned." He cautioned Republicans about making economic issues a higher priority than what he called "life" issues, claiming that "the deficit we will face is one that is much more destructive. It will be a deficit of the heart and of the soul." Said Huntsman: "That is a trade we should not make." Whether the social conservative activists who were present were buying what the former governor was selling is open for debate. Although introduced as "a good conservative" by Faith and Freedom Coalition founder and 1980s poster boy for the Religious Right, Ralph Reed, Huntsman was not as well-received – as measured by audience applause – as some of the other guest attendees, including Tea Party darling Michele Bachman, who won raucous applause with her defense of "traditional marriage." The dance has only just begun. H

Newt’s Gay Sister to the Rescue By CLIFF DUNN Former U.S. Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich’s gay half-sister has weighed in on the future of her brother’s presidential campaign. Candace Gingrich-Jones defended her half-brother over calls for him to abandon his bid for the 2012 Republican nomination, and said recent setbacks won’t deter his White House run. "He doesn't give up that easily," Gingrich-Jones told The Huffington Post. "Just because some staff members weren’t with his strategy isn't going to make him quit. If anything, I can imagine that strengthening his desire and his resolve to do good." Gingrich-Jones’ comments came in the wake of a mass exodus of Gingrich staffers two weeks ago. A majority of his campaign staff, including his cam-

paign manager and a half dozen senior advisors, resigned after Gingrich left for a two-week vacation cruise; many close to the campaign were concerned about the message it sent. The list of resignations included Gingrich’s campaign manager, Rob Johnson, longtime spokesman Rick Tyler, and strategists based in New Hampshire, South Carolina and Iowa. Gingrich-Jones, who works with the Human Rights Campaign’s Youth and Campus Outreach Program, credits Gingrich’s third wife, Callista, with a change in her brother’s positions on gay rights. “She’s possibly gotten LGBT issues to no longer be a red meat issue for him politically.” Possibly. But in 2010, the former House Speaker was a major contributor

to the campaign that successfully unseated three of the nine state Supreme Court justices who had ruled in favor of marriage equality in Iowa. According to the Washington, D.C.based Center for American Progress, of $850,000 raised in that campaign, one third was donated by Newt Gingrich and his associates. The former Georgia congressman is also on record as opposing gay marriage, including apparently for members of his own family. In a 1996 Meet the Press segment, Gingrich told interviewer Tim Russert that if his sister married in a same-sex union, he would not attend. In August 2009, Candace married longtime partner Rebecca Jones; her half-brother did not attend the Boston ceremony. H

Who Knew? Candida and Thrush – Two words you should know and avoid! By sam knew, msw Most of us think that yeast infections (Candida) are primarily a female problem; however, it may surprise you that men can also contract or develop yeast infections. Penile, anal and yes, oral, are all types of yeast infections in men. Most commonly, penile yeast infections among men are transmitted sexually, after sex with a carrier female, which makes it even more surprising that yeast infections are not considered a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Men who engage in vaginal sex with an infected female partner can pass the infection to anyone (male or female) that his penis comes in contact with, which is one means of the spread (anally and orally). The rate of infection is higher among uncircumcised men since the foreskin can trap in moisture. General symptoms of penile infection are identified as itching (similar to jock itch), burning during sex and urination, soreness, and redness of the tip of the penis. Some men may also experience a white,

clumpy discharge (not to be mistaken for semen). Anal infection symptoms are usually isolated to itchiness and redness. Men who also engage in unprotected anal sex (even with an uninfected partner), may develop an infection. This can occur when bacteria in feces comes into contact with the penis, (another reason to avoid that “not so fresh” feeling). Oral infection (thrush) is usually rec-

ognized by white patches covering the inside of the mouth. Patches may be on the insides of the cheeks, tongue, roof of the mouth, and lips and gums as it spreads. Partners performing oral sex on uncircumcised men are at greater risk, again due an increased likelihood of trapped bacteria. Additional means of infection among men include the prolonged use of antibiotics and men with compromised immune systems. Reason being, antibiotics do not discriminate between bad and good bacteria, thus creating an ideal environment for the infection to cultivate. In addition, diabetic individuals are also likely to develop yeast infections due to high levels of sugar in the body, specifically in urine. Fortunately, prevention and treatment for all these types of yeast infections are fairly simple. Your own personal hygiene is always a good place to start. Also, try being mindful to wash any areas of the body that can trap moisture (foreskin) and

remember to completely dry them. Severe cases in partners can be identified easily, especially if you are taking the time to playfully “inspect” your partner(s). Usually treatment includes a week-long regimen of topical cream and abstinence, the latter perhaps being the most difficult of the two. H

Cross-Eyed

“Will Work For Food” By AJ CROSS Homelessness is one of the most overlooked tragedies of the American culture. How is it possible that we have actually become so used to seeing another human being broken, destitute, dirty and starving and not give a second thought to how they ended up that way, and worse, not care? Even those of us with a heart and compassion can’t help but to assume that any money we would give to a homeless person would be used for alcohol or drugs, so we talk ourselves out of doing so. We assume that they have a choice and that either through laziness or poor life choices a homeless person is in the situation they are. That may be the case for so many of the adults on the streets, but what of the children? According to national statistics, 49,886 homeless children are in Florida, representing 6% of all children within the poverty sector of our communities. Most of these children are without parents or relatives able or willing to help. That is roughly 50,000 innocent and beautiful children doing incredible things simply to fill their stomachs and find shelter at night. Of that number, 30% have turned to prostitution to make it through to the next day, sometimes

selling their bodies for a Happy Meal. 15,000 kids, mostly under the age of 16, find their way into public parks, beaches, YMCA, or seek shelter in abandoned alleys or buildings. Even reputable charitable organizations such as Covenant House are not equipped to manage this epidemic. The perverted and deviant of our society prey upon these children and take advantage of the fact that they have no alternative but to accept their solicitations for money or food. While law enforcement is policing the internet to protect our children at home from such people, there is no protection for those children on the streets. I decided to write about this tragedy for many reasons, one of which is having first-hand experience in the matter. I was once a homeless youth. Many of you may be shocked to learn that from the ages of thirteen to sixteen, I was homeless. It is not something I have shared with many people -- only those close to me have been privy to that information. Sometimes, however, in order to be impactful we must be vulnerable and expose aspects of our past to impress upon others that we are not simply mak-

ing assumptions about certain subject matter. I have known hunger and fear and uncertainty. I have encountered many of the older men in suits during their business lunch hour who did not think twice about buying me food or giving me money to fulfill their twisted fantasies. I did not chose being homeless, but was a victim of circumstance: A mother who died of a drug overdose; unknown father; dysfunctional and under budget Youth and Family Services Department and a disinterested society all played a part. For many years, I survived by breaking into churches and eating what I thought was crackers and drinking what I thought was grape juice. It was not until many years later when I learned that I was eating the Eucharist and “blood of Christ,” according to some religions, which for so many years unknowingly supported my life on the streets. I stole money from the donation boxes for food, as well. As an adult looking back, there are definitely some feelings of guilt, but I have always recon-

ciled that with the fact that I was simply surviving. To have gotten to where I am in my life and never have fallen into drugs, crime or alcohol is the greatest blessing in my life, but that is not the case with so many abandoned youth in our society. I share that intimate detail of my life not out of a need of empathic concern, but because there were people in my life who stopped and really looked at me and recognized that it was their humanly duty and obligation to reach our their hand and help me. For those kindnesses, I will be eternally grateful. I ask that, before you discount a homeless child as pathetic or deserving of their circumstance, you look into their eyes and ask yourself if, by helping them, could you be doing more than just feeding their stomach, but saving their life? Over Easy Café It’s Easy to Fall in Love with Over Easy By TIM SLIVINSKI We all have those mornings when, for whatever reason, we wake up famished. We down a cup of coffee or two, but we really need some food, something to energize us for the day ahead. We could scramble some eggs, maybe fry a little bacon, but we really don’t feel ambitious – and then there’s the mess to clean up. To top it off, we’re just not in the mood for some chef ’s “froo-froo” creation of mango-basil-jalapeno French toast topped with crème fraiche and caviar. We crave good old-fashioned down home breakfast food. Welcome to the Over Easy Café. There’s nothing fancy or over the top at the Over Easy, and that’s exactly what makes it so special. You are greeted with a hell-o when you walk in the door, and whether you slide into a booth or take a seat at the counter, the coffee arrives swiftly and your cup will never be empty again. There’s a very good chance that Cathy, the owner of the café since 1995, will be at your side taking your breakfast order with a big smile. Deciding what to order may be the biggest challenge of your morning. In true diner fashion, the choices are seemingly endless. One morning I opted for two eggs, corned beef hash, hash

browns, and rye toast. If, like me, you are a fan of the shredded hash brown potatoes for breakfast, then run, don’t walk, to the Over Easy Café. I don’t know why these delicious breakfast potatoes are so rare in South Florida, but they are. When I find a restaurant that serves them, they begin to win my approval immediately. My eggs arrived perfectly over easy—just like the café’s name—the hash was crispy on the exterior and soft on the interior, the potatoes were also crispy with a soft center, and the toast was perfectly buttered. I settled back in the booth and just knew it was the start to a good day. I joined the clean plate club that day, too! My dining partner opted for one of the Daily Triples called the Island City Slam. It offers a choice of two pancakes or two slices of French toast, two eggs and two bacon strips and two sausages. He opted for the French toast, the sausage and bacon combo — they will let you have all bacon or all sausage if you prefer — and over medium eggs. When his plate arrived, the French toast was nicely grilled egg-dipped bread, nothing fancy, but oh so simple and delicious. He pronounced the bacon perfectly crisp and the egg yolks at the perfect soft/hard

This recipe calls for 6 lamb shanks. Add salt and pepper to taste. • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 2 onions, chopped • 3 large carrots cut into 1/4 inch rounds • 1 liter red wine (that’s like a bottle and a glass) • A large tin of crushed tomatoes with juice • 1 pint of chicken broth • Bouquet Garni Season the shanks with salt and pepper. Heat the oil in heavy-assed large saucepan over medium-high heat. Working in batches, brown the shanks until brown on all sides, about 8 min-

Return shanks to pot, pressing down to submerge. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat to medium-low. Cover and simmer until meat is tender, about 3 hours. Serve with the veggies of your choice. GET A ROOM! By CLIFF DUNN Invoking the legendary 1970s and 1980s T-Dances at Fort Lauderdale’s long-dead Marlin Beach Resort, and the 1990s version at Club Caribbean Resort, The Depot Cabana Bar & Grill on Federal Highway has launched its Sunday T with a cross-promotion at the adjacent America’s Best Inn & Suites, which makes for an affordable Summer Staycation. The hotel – less than a mile from Wilton Drive and Fort Lauderdale’s beaches – is offering a $149 weekend special (Friday through Sunday night stay) when guests mention The Depot. Says Depot owner Jim Babb: “This is a great and very affordable alternative to some of the more costly choices for accommodations elsewhere in Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors. Instead of spending $150 to $200 a night in another establishment, you can spend a third of that and bank the difference or spend it shopping and dining – and having a great time at The Depot.”

Grape Expectations Following the closing of The Painted Pickle delicatessen on Wilton Drive this spring, its business space was briefly occupied by the briefly open Drive Café, which marked its own swansong last month with an auction of its accoutrements (tables, chairs, food cases, et al.). The now-empty bay won’t remain long unoccupied, as the owners of The Naked Grape Wine Bar have plans to move from their current location (2039 Wilton Drive) just up the street to the 2163 spot vacated by Pickle and Café. Owners Caleb Ben-Avram and Tim Slivinski say they are looking at an August 1 opening at their new digs.

Federal Court Judges: DOMA is Bankrupt Yet another panel of jurists has found legal flaws within the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the 1996 law that bars federal recognition of same-sex marriage, declaring that the law is unconstitutional. In a decision last week of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California, Judge Thomas B. Donovan wrote: “In this court’s judgment, no legally married couple should be entitled to fewer bankruptcy rights than any other legally married couple.” And, in an extremely rare action, 19 other judges, comprising the vast majority of the 24 judges of the Central District, also signed the ruling; the presence of the other judges’ names suggests that they would rule similarly to Donovan in their own courtrooms. The case involved two men, Gene

Douglas Balas and Carlos A. Morales, who were legally married under California’s marriage equality law. The couple wanted to file jointly for bankruptcy, but federal officials moved to dismiss their petition under DOMA. Balas and Morales requested that the court allow them to file jointly, and last week’s ruling was the result. In his decision, the judge notably quoted a letter sent in February by U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to members of Congress. In that letter, Holder announced that, while the Obama administration would continue to enforce DOMA, it would no longer defend the law in court. In his 26page opinion, Judge Donovan wrote: “The Holder Letter demonstrates that DOMA cannot withstand heightened scrutiny.”

Ciao, Pasta! One of the area’s newest eateries is hosting a getting-to-know-you party at Fort Lauderdale Beach this Saturday, June 25. Oakland Park’s Ciao Pasta & Grill is inviting everyone (and they mean everyone) to their first annual Pre-July 4 Beach Party. Co-owner Brian Allan Harris promises “a great American Summer BBQ menu.” The soiree begins at 10 a.m. and costs $20 per person, which includes the aforementioned full American BBQ meal, water, assorted Drinks, and the like. Harris & Co.’s party will be held on Fort Lauderdale Beach where the parking starts ocean side on A1A. “This is a great spot, not as crowded,” says Harris, “we should have a nice space for our group and the water is absolutely beautiful there.” Attendees are requested to bring their own coolers and ice, beach chairs, towels and sun screen.

A Fit and Cohesive Community Reece Darham is Exercising the Power of Fort Lauderdale By ALEX VAUGHN Owner of Island City Health and Fitness, Reece Darham, grew up in the UK and moved to South Africa at the age of nine. Reece is now a very active member of the community in Wilton Manors and, through his very popular gym, is trying to make a positive impact on the area and in the community. Agenda sat down with him to find out how the gym is doing and what his latest projects are for the community. How did you end up in Florida? I came here to go to school at St. Thomas University. I had every goal of going back to Cape Town, however, after 3 years, I got the studying bug, so I went on to Cornell to do a Masters in Organizational Communication with a specialization in Industrial and Labor Relations with a concentration in organizational behavior. Came back down after that, I kept missing it, couldn’t wait to get away then couldn’t wait to get back. Why did you choose to open the Island City Health and Fitness center? It was a great opportunity that Jackson, one of the owners of Alibi, came to me with. We explored it, it was definitely something the community needed. Lots of people were upset when the previous gym closed. We took over the space in October 2008, and opened November 20th 2008.

mature members of the community. We tailor classes, we go more and more into obesity nutrition and training practices. We have partnered with business here, like Lifeceuticals. I lost 35lbs so clearly it works, its changed my life and attitudes. I personally inspire people, but they insprired me. Speaking of obesity, you have a project. Please tell Agenda readers more about it. A young gentleman who at the ripe age of 15 is 400 lbs. He has a misfortunate background; I would hazard to say he is an emotional eater. He is now in a great environment where he can be a young gay teenager AND be comfortable with that. We are getting together with businesses on the drive to change his life around. We are giving him a free membership and training. It’s a grass roots project, all staff working for free and are completely on board – when he has lost 100lbs., Tracy Carroll is going to give him the full make over. We are looking for a local clothing company to donate a wardrobe. We are also using the media. Brian Neal will be helping out with personal training and getting him fit. Stace, formerly of Max Muscle, will be helping him with nutrition. Bruce Bertman of Lifeceutical Group will be creating a non-cosmetic diet to help him lose excess skin, a medically driven diet such hCG – it’s a hormone based diet. Whatever other treat-

Stretching before class at Island City Health & Fitness What are the advantages of gay community? The community comes together to work for bettering our lives and those of the next generation. What are the disadvantages? These days, the way business works, its less segregated gay and straight. Tampa is very mixed. You have all walks of life together. I don’t think South Florida is at that stage yet. Being in a community where it is very clearly defined, now limits business rather than improves it. We are not a gay gym; we are a gym in Wilton Manors that services the entire community. We add to the vibe and friendliness here with more women and straight men joining every day, What do you offer to better the community? We offer many programs for the

ments he wishes to have will be available and the program is medically supervised to make sure he can do them. It’s a community based thing, so many people are jumping on to help him out. It’s wonderful. I just made a few phone calls. What is the future for Island City? I see it expanding and continuing to improve. I see it becoming more of a, inclusive community-based social health and fitness club. Would you like to open more? Yes, that is the plan. Soon. Since you opened the Gym have there been any surprises? With any new business, there are surprises both good and bad. The best surprise of it is getting to really know the people of Wilton Manors and it has also

allowed me to get to know the city people who are truly wonderful. I has also been able to get involved with cross promotion with other businesses; it doesn’t avail itself if you aren’t in business level. The bad surprise is I’m not a politician and don’t plan on being one, so sometime I don’t say the right thing to the right person at the right time. I’m not mean and horrible, it’s simply the double-edged sword getting to know people. How do feel working in the gay community has changed your social view of it? Honestly, I think that many people put business owners on a pedestal which they are all to glad to swipe out from under us. I’m just an average Joe and I happen to own a business. I am no one different; however, when I go out with one too many glasses of wine in too many establishment on the drive, the next day I hear through all mediums I was a wreck and from people I don’t know – it becomes a little tiring, as I was just on the drive an hour! It can be challenging, but it won’t stop me supporting family and friends on the drive; if they can drink, I can, too!

In your support of the community, you work with the Rainbow Business Coalition. Tell readers more about that. I am chairperson, of what is really an incredible organization. 100 businesses in Broward County have united to really promote and enhance our business and our community. We recently did the hugely successful IGLTA event, which was great for the Convention and Visitors Bureau and for the community. We got together to promote Broward County as a leading LGBT community for businesses and tourism. Miami is seen as the gay mecca, and many haven’t heard of Wilton Manors or Fort Lauderdale and that’s what we are changing – and in this economy we have to pull all stops out, as well as for the city Oakland Park and Fort Lauderdale, we need additional revenues. What events is the RBC involved with?

Celebration of Friends, which arrives this week, is a 1000 people strong organization that is celebrating its 10th anniversary. They generate $200,000 per day stimulating economy. It’s an organization of mature individuals who are coming here to socialize and be friends with our mature individuals from Australia. All the way from small group of friends to a very strong convention, they come here every year. RBC is supporting behind scenes, next year we will be front and center. We must acknowledge what they do for our community. Thursday night is the welcome reception. They have given $150,000 to local charities like the Pride Center and Tuesday’s Angels. What has the community done for them in return? This is what RBC is trying to change: acknowledge them on a public scale. We show our city as friendly and welcoming. We are a cohesive community, and that will bring more business to our doors – all businesses, not just bars and restaurants! H

Learn to Chill This Summer! Take a Break! By TOM BONANTI It’s summertime and for most of us that means slowing down and relaxing a little. Sounds like a good idea, but for many this is problematic. Between the job (if you still have one), the struggling economy, rising gas prices and other nagging worries, there seems to be little time or opportunity to take a break and chill out. Yet, if you want to remain productive at work and in the gym, you’ve got no other choice. You’ve simply got to make time to relax and unwind. I know, there is so much to do and if you’re not doing it, you’re thinking about doing it. In order to relax, you’ve got to give yourself permission, so cut yourself a little slack. It sure beats having a heart attack or stroke. Here are a few tips to follow that will help you to take a break from the rat race and teach you how to chill out, live longer and enjoy yourself. Learn to carry a small notebook with you everywhere – to work, to the gym, etc. Jot down anything that occurs to you that needs to be done. Go through the list now and then. Cross off what you really don’t need to do, and you’ll feel lighter. Then, as you work your way through the list, check off what you’ve accomplished

and you’ll feel more in control of your life. You’ve got to learn the value of sleep. Whether you are a bodybuilder, business executive, or just a regular person, sleep and rest are essential to a tired body and an exhausted brain. Experts tell us that 810 or even 12 hours of sound shut-eye are essential to good physical and mental health. If you have trouble sleeping, here are some techniques. First, try not to work out before going to bed because the changes in metabolism can keep you revved up and wide-eyed. Secondly, keep your work area separate from your sleeping quarters. Keep your bed and nightstand clear of papers and clutter that will remind you of work and deadlines. Third, keep the temperature cool and shut out all needless light. Use a soft mask or eye pillow over your eyes to block out light and all visual distractions. When you get home from work, try a little stretching. Chances are you have been sitting most of the day and your lower back is killing you. Take a few minutes and lie flat on your back on the floor, in a yoga position called shavarsana. First, bring you knees up so that your

lower back touches the floor. Lower your legs straight out and your back will be in a good position for relaxing. Let your feet flop outwards, have your arms a little out from your sides with palms facing upward. Tilt your head forward a little so that your neck is in a relaxed position. Now, go through your whole body mentally focusing your attention on one area at a time. Start with the soles of your feet and work your way up to your temples and forehead. Think “relax” as you breathe in and out deeply and slowly at each area. Visit a Spa. I know such indulgences can be expensive, but not as costly as you may think. There are at least a half-dozen spas listed in this publication with professional services geared toward men. Why not pamper yourself with a peppermint body scrub or a papaya facial? If you can’t get away to a day spa, treat

yourself to a full body massage at home. Just call your massage therapist and schedule! And finally, make time for your friends this summer. Don’t let work and worry rob you of one of life’s greatest gifts, friends. Consider the bigger picture to see where your deepest satisfaction lies and then try to live life to the fullest! For more ideas on summertime workouts contact TrainerTomB@aol.com. H

THE SCOOP / TRAVEL

The Scoop

FLORIDAAGENDA.COM

By BRAD “SCOOP” CASEY

Congrats to Le Patio, Rosie’s, To The Moon, and LIPS! New Times has come out with its yearly Best of Broward/Palm Beach awards and four gay owned businesses have made the list. Congrats to Le Patio, that little cozy restaurant off Wilton Drive at 11th Avenue who won the Best Restaurant in Which to Close the Deal award. Small, cozy and cool, Le Patio is slowly making a name for itself, one customer at a time. Proud owners, Chef Vero and partner Jean, have worked very hard to make this restaurant a success. Best Bloody Mary award went to Rosie’s Bar & Grill. Rosie’s needs no description and continues to pack them in every day. We like their frozen Strawberry Margaritas, thank you, and especially on weekends. Congrats to Cliff and John for making our community proud. Antonio Dumas’ To the Moon took the Best Gift Shop award and we agree. If you can’t find something in this store, then stop shopping, ‘cause you won’t find it. This is Wilton Drive’s most unusual, eclectic business. If you haven’t gone in, do so – you will enjoy! Congrats,

Antonio! LIPS continues to dazzle South Florida. They won the Best Drag Show category. New Times describes LIPS this way: “Hips will swivel, pelvises will thrust, lines will be crossed, wigs will be thrown across the room, dollar bills will be wedged into bustiers and you will go home with glitter in your hair, frozen cosmos churning in your blood, and a smile on your face.” Congrats to GM Mitch and the girls. Footnote: What we found unusual in this year’s New Times Best of Awards Broward/Palm Beach, they neglected to have a Best Gay Bar award! Hmmmm …

Community Turns Out The retirement party for Mona’s John ‘Mary’ Lyons was awesome and heartwarming. Hundreds and hundreds of well-wishers gathered at Mona’s on Saturday, the 11th, to send John into retirement after at least 20 years serving thirsty customers at some of Fort Lauderdale’s busiest bars … can we say the infamous 825, Bus Stop, Haymarket and, finally, 12 years at Mona’s.

John was recently diagnosed with bone and lung cancer … damn it. Jerry Schultz, one of Fort Lauderdale’s great people, wanted to help John, not only spiritually, but financially, as well. Thus, the retirement party and John’s friends heard the call. From my perch I spotted many movers and shakers, like Joe McCallion and Jim Rapherty, former owners of 825, Scandals owners Lloyd and Ken, real estate guru Larry Rowe, famed attorney Arthur Smith, my good friend Rich LoPrimo of Hotspots!, Mike Terrazzi, master mixologist from Tropic’s Restaurant and Lounge and that handsome man from Monkey Business, Gus

Sanchez, helped raise money for the raffle. David Snyder of the classic Marlin Beach Hotel was also there, as were so many, many good people of Fort Lauderdale – the ones who paved the way for the rest of us. It was a pleasure and honor to help a friend. Thanks for picking us up this week and remember: To have a friend, you must first be a friend. H

The World On Sale: Summer 2011 By PAUL RUBIO Summer is the perfect time of year to give into your deepest pangs of wanderlust and fulfill your travel fantasies. As the debate lingers on whether the recession has ended or not, some hotels are still offering great discounts this summer, from a GLBT sanctuary in the jungles of Costa Rica to one of Florida’s best kept secrets. Below are a few of my personal picks for summer 2011’s best sales!

Villa Roca, Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica from $50/night via Direct Website

For over 11 years, Villa Roca has drawn LGBT visitors from far corners of the globe to delight in mountain top views over the Pacific. The resort’s infinity pool is arguably my favorite in the world. Sipping cocktails during happy hour, watching the sun set into the forest canopy, hearing the calls of the howler monkeys, and watching naked hotties jump into the clothing optional pool, I have experienced some of life’s great “moments” in the pool at Villa Roca. A stay includes Wi-Fi and a fabulous breakfast (with great gallo pinto) overlooking the ocean. Hotel guests split their time between sunbathing and drinking at the

pool, trekking to the remains of the former gay, nude beach called “playita,” and enjoying the nature trails of Manuel Antonio National Park. Visit their Website at www.villaroca.com.

Vero Beach Hotel & Spa, Vero Beach, Florida from $109/night for Florida residents via Direct Website

With two Florida guidebooks and over 1300 hotel reviews under my belt, Vero Beach Hotel & Spa still triumphs as my pick for Florida’s best vacation value and the state’s best-kept secret. The light, West-Indies-style décor, replete with oversized fans, rich hardwood furniture, and luxurious plantation shutters scream “fabulous!” The lobby buzzes with fashionable and friendly hotel guests, enjoying Kimpton’s signature complimentary wine hour, a relaxed forum for meeting fellow patrons and their adorable pets. Similar to the common areas, the attention to detail and level of casual luxury of the rooms is similar to award-winning five star Caribbean hotels, while the $109 rate is less than an average Holiday Inn. The rooms are straight out of a seductive Ralph Lauren catalog - whimsical whites, cappuccino dark wood craftsmanship, and

light blue accents to match the ocean views. The textured walls, the decadent crown molding, the epicurean touches, and the complete interior design fantasy was our weekend reality. And the views of the ocean will blow you away! Log on to www.verobeachhotelandspa.com for more info.

The Ritz-Carlton, San Juan, Puerto Rico from $239/night (including breakfast, parking, and free upgrade) via Direct Website

The Pool at the Ritz-Carlton, Puerto Rico

In this resort-heavy district of Isla Verde, the Ritz-Carlton, San Juan Hotel, Spa and Casino (www.ritzcarlton.com) stands out among the competition, combining all the splendor of a Ritz with the simplicity of the tropics. A tropical elegance motif unites the vast spaces of the oceanfront sanctuary. In common areas, grand pineapple chandeliers shine upon fresh exotic floral arrangements while lush reds and greens contrast the teak furniture in guestrooms. The marble

lion-clad, five-in-one 7,200 square foot swimming pool emerges as the resort’s center of attention (though resident iguana George would like to think it’s him). Whether sipping margaritas by the pool, getting carried away at the hotel spa, or watching the waves crash from the Club Level balcony, the hotel fosters an unabashed haven for relaxation, romance, and self-indulgence. The Most Confusing and Controversial Film of Many-a-Year May Be This Year’s Best By WARREN DAY

Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain star in “The Tree of Life” from Fox Searchlight Pictures All of us, critics and movie lovers alike (they aren’t always the same you know), usually end up judging a film by concluding it lacks something. But once in a while (a very rare while), along comes one that’s so challenging and so original that our opinion ends up being more a judgment of us than it is of the film itself. That’s the case with “The Tree of Life,” starring Brad Pitt, that’s just now opening in Florida. The winner of the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, this movie isn’t concerned with what has occupied most films for the last 100 years, namely a sequential storyline with characters who are either a lot better or a lot worse than we are. This one wants to show you people and moments you’ve known up close and personal, and to show you how those are connected to all living things and the universe itself. This isn’t a stodgy or apathetic movie, because if you’ll allow yourself to be open, it has the potential to fill you with more awe than maybe any movie ever has. For most films, you can stay in the shallow end of the pool and still get all there is to be gotten, and that’s perfectly okay. Diversion and escape is one of the main reasons we all plop down our money for a ticket. Yet, a few times a year, there are films that ask you to dive into the deep end and swim with the adults. And, once every decade or so, there’s a film that beckons you to get out of the pool alto-

gether and come ride the waves of an uncharted ocean, a movie that redefines what a movie experience can be. “Tree of Life” is that kind of film. If you can leave the worn conventions of other movies at the door, I don’t think this meditative one has to be all that confusing. What the writer/director Terrence Malick is focused on is what has consumed any thinking person since recorded time: what is my place in the bigger scheme of things, and equally, how does the bigger scheme of things fit into my life? He uses a very ordinary family in the 1950s to counterpunch and counterpoint those questions, for Malick understands that regular people wonder about such matters, and often when we’re twelve or thirteen we’re more willing to raise questions that are later drummed out of us by either closed minds or lazy thinking (they often go together). At the beginning, we see Jack O’Brien, played by Sean Penn, as a successful architect, whose success has brought him neither fulfillment nor happiness. He reflects back on his life and what shaped him, and his memory goes in bits and pieces, forwards and backwards, to when he was twelve and how he was torn between his parents who were so different from each other. His mother tells Jack that everyone must decide between nature and grace, with nature being our base animal

instincts, our self-interest as the most important thing of all. Grace is what human beings can be when we reach out to something bigger than ourselves, when we’re capable of putting someone else’s interest before our own. His parents represent these two ways of life and Jack says his mother and father continue to wrestle within him, something many of us can identify with. If you think of the whole movie as an inner monologue Jack is having with himself as he tries to makes sense of his past and present, then the structure is more understandable, for memory doesn’t stay put, but floats and darts, and can jump to something that seems unrelated, but which is very much a part of the struggle our minds are going through. So, about 18 minutes into the film, after we’ve seen Jack as a delusional adult and seen his first memories of what he remembers as the confusing and wonderful time when he was twelve, his thoughts jump to how this fits into the bigger scheme of things. And there’s no bigger scheme of things than how the universe began, so you get this mind-bending and breathtaking account from the Big Bang that instigated the universe, to planets forming, to one cell amoebas, to a touching encounter between two dinosaurs on the banks of a primordial river. The reason for his memory jumping to that becomes clear in the following scenes as we go from the awesome moments of

cosmological wonder to his memories of the daily wonders of growing up. So, we see a montage of moments that many of us can relate to – a butterfly landing on your arm, running with your brothers through tall grass, the shadows on the ground as you swing from the shade into the sunlight, the washing of your feet over a lawn sprinkler. Malick is showing us (not telling us) that ordinary life has its share of wonders just as much as the universe does – that is, if we have the grace to see it. This isn’t some nostalgia trip down memory lane, for Malick reveals the dark and destructive side of childhood, too – the fear on seeing the cruelty in your father, and the worst fear of seeing it in yourself; the feeling that we can never please our parents and yet we’ll never stop trying; the awkward awakening of puberty. Malick may show us kids joyfully chasing after a truck spraying for mosquitos, but he also shows us that DDT is written on its side. “Tree of Life” is not for everyone (no movie is). It’s not for the cynical or materialistic, nor for those who think life and living is a simple matter and certainly not for those who want their movies to come predigested. You don’t have to like “The Tree of Life,” but you should at least admire it for how high it set its aim and how close it comes to achieving it. Happy 235th Birthday America By MICHAEL FRENCH

Planning a 4th of July party? The most important part is to invite people you like the best, relax and don’t obsess about perfectionism. A great Independence Day celebration is all about solid 4th of July party ideas. The success or failure of your party will be all about the planning you do. PLANNING. While you can throw a fun last-minute celebration, without the right planning, you risk your party being a disappointment. Your guests might be already booked and the food pickings at the nearest store could look like they were picked over by turkey buzzards. What are the most important 4th of July party ideas to think out first? Your guests and your invitations, of course! To be sure you get all the guests you want, plan your guest list and send out invites well in advance. Online invita-

tions and evites, are cheap (or free!). Real invitations can be a lot of fun to send and receive. By far, one the most customary and beloved "themes" for Independence Day is a 4th of July barbecue. This is an easy way to cook for a group, and if you use paper plates, cups etc., clean up is a breeze! Some other good 4th of July party theme ideas are: • Luau Party • Disco Party • 50 States Party (Everybody dresses/acts in character as someone from each state) Before sending out invitations is a good time to decide if you'll be asking your guests for food contributions. It makes your life a lot easier the day of the party. If you do be sure to say so as part of the invitation. If you like this 4th of July party planning idea, be sure to ask guests (or a few chosen guests) to tell you what they're making when they RSVP. Or even make menu requests. That helps keep things simple! We like simple! Making requests won't come off pushy ... it's just smart. This is one holiday that has several prominent themes that can help get you started creating the ideal party backdrop. Think back to your lessons about American history. Of course, there's all that red, white and blue! It's really all

you need. The truth is creating 4th of July house decorations should be easy because this casual celebration is not a big "decorating" holiday. People will be focused on food, fun, and friends ... so a few little touches will be all it takes to set the mood. Let's start with some nice and simple 4th of July decorating ideas: balloons! Balloons are an all-time favorite decoration because they're inexpensive and require no real craft ability to use them beautifully. The best July 4th balloon decorations: Of course, go with red, white and blue. Tie up bundles of three around the area of your party or on the corners of food tables. Want a little more oomph? Make bigger bundles of red, white, and blue balloons and place them on either side of the door, or create a red, white and blue balloon arch. A fun tip: To make the balloon shimmer like fireworks, blow it up and spray it lightly with craft glue. Sprinkle on some glitter and you're done! Fast, easy and the visual impact is a lot of fun. A 4th of July party is always fun. Remember to appreciate and be grateful for the real reason we are celebrating

this day: The birth of our wonderful country that began with “The shot heard around the world!” H

The Best Belts

It’s a Cinch By ALEX VAUGHN A belt is one of those staple pieces that you chose either for the practicality or for the style. Color co-ordination is always a good idea with a belt, but don’t shy away from bold colors to really transform a drab outfit. Belts have been documented for male clothing since the Bronze Age. Both sexes used them off and on, depending on the current fashion. In the western world, belts were more common for men, with the exception of the early Middle Ages, late 17th century Mantua, and skirt/blouse combinations between 1900 and 1910. Art Nouveau belt buckles are now collector's items. In modern times, men started wearing belts in the 1920s as trouser waists fell to a lower line. Before the 1920s, belts

served mostly a decorative purpose and were associated with the military. Today it is common for men to wear a belt with their trousers. Belts aren’t simply for the practical anymore but another statement of style. Belts are also a very easy way into a designer brand -- a timeless belt such as the Hermes ‘H’ or a Gucci ‘G’ will last a very long time and will add a key element to any outfit. As with all accessories, consider longevity and wear when searching for the right belt. Also, every man should have four belts: black and brown leather belts, one statement belt and a casual canvas belt for those days off. So, this summer invest in a timeless classic – just stay away from carbs, to ensure it lasts! H
