Heidi Shafran The Future of Wilton Manors Is In Her Hands By JAMES MICHAELS WILTON MANORS, FL – Heidi Shafran is the newly-hired director of Community Development Services Department for the City of Wilton Manors. The position had been vacant for over a year. The major functions of the Community Development Services Department include fire prevention and investigation, occupational licensing, building permitting and inspection, landscape inspection and zoning administration. The Department also provides administrative support to the Development Review Committee, the Board of Adjustment, the Planning and Zoning Board and the Code Enforcement Board. Shafran was born in Fort Lauderdale and raised in Plantation. She did her undergraduate work in North Carolina and received her Master’s Degree in Heritage Preservation Planning in Atlanta. She returned to Broward County
in late 1998 where she settled down, bought a house and got a job as executive director of the Miami Design Preservation League, the organization that’s credited with saving South Beach’s Art Deco buildings. After a year, she went to work with community activist and Miami Beach City Commissioner Nancy Liebman, who was also interested in the arts, culture and historic preservation. After two years, Shafran moved over to the City of Hollywood as their historic preservation officer and principle community planner. She remained with Hollywood until 2004, when she was contacted by a headhunter for the Seminole Indian Tribe which was looking for a professional planner to create and run their first planning department. She stayed there until she went to work for the City of Wilton Manors. Shafran says that her biggest challenge right now is the economy; however, she also sees this as an opportunity to get all

USA: Cultural Terrorists? Pakistan Condemns US Embassy for Gay Pride Event By ALEX VAUGHN Conservative religious activists in Pakistan have condemned and protested a gay rights event last week sponsored by the US embassy in Islamabad. Over 75 people attended the meeting, which was co-hosted by the Gays and Lesbians in Foreign Affairs Agencies, the embassy said. The crowd included U.S. Embassy officials, military representatives, foreign diplomats and leaders of Pakistani LGBT advocacy groups. The Islamic officials demanded the Pakistani government arrest the participants under the country's laws and said the meeting was "tantamount to stabbing the Muslim world in the chest." At the “gay pride” event at the embassy, the US deputy ambassador to Pakistan, Richard Hoagland, said Washington was committed to gay rights in the country. "I want to be clear: the US embassy is here to support you and stand by your side every step of the way," the embassy said in a statement.
In a statement issued by the US Embassy, it stated “This gathering demonstrated continued US Embassy support for human rights, including LGBT rights, in Pakistan at a time when those rights are increasingly under attack from extremist elements throughout Pakistani society.” Members of Pakistan's largest Islamic party, Jamaat-eIslami (JI), described the event as a form of "cultural terrorism.” “Such people [homosexuals] are the curse of society and social garbage,” JI said. “They don't deserve to be Muslim or Pakistani, and the support and protection
announced by the US administration for them is the worst social and cultural terrorism against Pakistan.” Protesters in Karachi called the event “an assault on Pakistan’s Islamic culture.” According to Dawn, an English-language Pakistani daily, Mohammad Hussain Mehnati, a top official with JI, told a rally: “We condemn the American conspiracy to encourage [bisexuality] in our country. They have destroyed us physically, imposed the so-called war on terrorism on us and now they have unleashed cultural terrorism on us.” Mehnati added: “This [event] shows [how] cruel America has unleashed a storm of immoral values on our great Islamic values, which we’ll resist at all costs.” In Islamabad, the youth wing of JI burnt a US flag and shouted “we are ready for jihad against the US.” A placard at that rally read: “Americans, we will not allow you to spread your vulgar and ugly civilization in ‘CULTURAL TERRORISTS’ continues on Page 5

‘CULTURAL TERRORISTS’ continued from COVER Pakistan.” A spokesman for the group, Noorul Bashar, told Pakistani media: “Through our peaceful rally, we want to give the message through the media that we will not allow these people (gays) to live here and they should be immediately deported out of Pakistan.” While Pakistan’s constitution does not even address homosexuality, under the strict laws of Islamic Shariah, such acts are regarded as immoral and evil and can result in brutal punishment, including whipping, prison and sometimes death. Just when it seemed relations between the US and Pakistan couldn’t get worse, this new wrinkle has developed. Conservative religious groups in Pakistan have sharply criticized the US Embassy and described the event as the second most dangerous attack on the country by the US after the drone and missile strikes that have that have killed civilians in addition to their intended insurgent targets. Hoagland reaffirmed US commitment to a proclamation signed by President Barack Obama May 31 that, “we rededicate ourselves to the pursuit of equal rights for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.” There has been no comment on the event by Pakistan government officials, but the furor could fuel public resentment of US dealings in the country. The two governments already are at odds over fallout from the secret US attack in Abbottabad in which Al Qaeda mastermind Osama Bin Laden was killed May 2, as well as civilian deaths from unmanned Predator drone aircraft and missile attacks in remote areas where Al Qaeda and other insurgents are hiding. Whether the criticisms over the gay rights celebration will gain traction with the Pakistan public remains to be seen. Already it has generated debate on Internet blogs. Islamist groups held rallies in major cities Monday, at which US sponsorship of the event was denounced. Nonetheless, the country seems to be softening some of its official treatment of homosexuals. Earlier this year, Pakistan’s Supreme Court ruled to allow a third gender category on national identity cards. “Previously, we were having two categories, male and female, for registration,” Brigadier Ehsan ul-Haq, who manages the national database in Karachi, said at the time. “This (homosexual) community agitated for a separate identity of their own. They went to the Supreme Court, the court agreed and we will implement it.” Pakistan does not, however, recognize marriage or civil unions by homosexuals, and homosexually is socially and religiously ostracized in most areas of the country. The Obama administration’s projection of its philosophy on homosexuality in Pakistan comes at a time when the US itself is wrestling with questions of rights for homosexuals. States are debating whether to recognize same sex marriages and the military is divided on whether homosexuals should be allowed to serve openly in the armed forces. Only seven states and one district currently allow same sex marriages. Other states recognize same-sex marriages performed elsewhere and some states offer civil unions of same sex couples that afford some of the legal benefits and protections of marriage. In addition, twenty states outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation while twelve others prohibit discrimination based on gender identity or expression. H

Trial Begins in Gay Bullying Murder LOS ANGELES, CA – The trial of Brandon McInerney for the alleged shooting death of Lawrence King in an Oxnard, California, classroom has begun. McInerney, 17, who was 14 at the time of the shooting, faces first-degree murder and hate crime charges. The defense will argue voluntary manslaughter, saying that McInerney was young, immature and provoked. According to prosecutors, in February, 2008, McInerney allegedly walked into the middle school classroom, took a seat behind King, who was openly gay, pulled out a handgun and shot King twice in the back of the head. McInerney is accused of then tossing the gun on the floor and walking out of the classroom. King was 15 at the time of his death. The defense says that McInerney doesn’t deny killing King, but will argue that it was involuntary manslaughter because McInerney was provoked by King’s repeated sexual advances. Witnesses will say that the two boys had clashed over King’s expressing his attraction to McInerney and that King had recently gone to school wearing eye makeup and women’s accessories. A voluntary manslaughter conviction would prevent a life sentence, making McInerney eligible for release before he's 40. Even a finding of second-degree murder would virtually assure that he wouldn't be eligible for parole until he was in his 70s. H
Rhode Island Senate Passes Civil Unions Bill PROVIDENCE, RI – The Rhode Island Senate passed legislation that would allow same-sex couples to form civil unions. Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee signed the bill into law, though he said he felt that civil unions were insufficient to full marriage equality, which he supports. H
Will Maine Be Next? LEWISTON, ME – According to the Bangor Daily News, supporters of marriage equality have officially kicked off their efforts to get same-sex marriage on the 2012 ballot. A spokesperson for Equality Maine said the organization needed to finish the job they started in 2009. In 2009, a bill allowing same-sex marriage passed largely along party lines in the Democrat-controlled Maine Senate and House and was signed into law by Democratic Governor Baldacci. A people’s veto effort was immediately launched, run by a coalition of evangelical Christian churches and the Catholic Church in Maine. Outside support was provided to both sides and overall spending on the referendum question totaled $9.6 million. The people’s veto was successful and the same-sex marriage law was overturned 300,848 to 267,828. Gay marriage supporters must get 57,277 signatures to get the question on the November, 2012, ballot. Included on the site were working phone numbers and those answering the phones identified themselves as employees of the SBC Executive Committee. H
Phelps’ Church Used for FBI Training QUANTICO, VA – NPR reported that the FBI has recently invited the Reverend Fred Phelps’ Westboro Baptist Church to talk to agents as part of the bureau’s counterterrorism training program. WBC is best known for their protests holding signs stating “God Hates Fags” and protesting at the funerals carrying signs with messages such as “Thank God for Dead Soldiers”. Phelps contends that the protests are intended to tell the world that God is punishing the United States for its tolerance of homosexuality. The FBI claims the program was designed to teach agents how to stay measured when they are speaking with a witness or a suspect with whom they have a strong, visceral disagreement. After just four sessions this past spring, the FBI canceled the arrangement due to criticism from inside the bureau. H

‘HEIDI SHAFRAN’ Continued from COVER her tools and incentives in place. She has taken this time to restructure the department so that everything is lined up and ready to go when the economy improves. One of the first changes that she made was for what is being called “Walk Through Tuesdays.” Shafran said that the idea was given to her by Wilton Manors City Manager Joe Gallegos when she first started. The program is for property owners wanting to do their own small property improvements requiring a building permit (such as changing out an air conditioner unit, replacing windows, putting in a sprinkler system or other routine upgrades). If the property owner comes in and submits their paperwork before 10 a.m. on Tuesdays, and all the paperwork is in order, the property owner should have their permit by 2 p.m. the same day. “We can only do so much to help our business owners if the property owners do not understand what’s going on,” she said. “I give them recommendations. From the city’s perspective, there’s nothing legislatively we can do, so the best I can do is to be a good friend to them and keep the lines of communications open.” Shafran is also trying to streamline the permitting process, which is currently operated by the County, by privatizing the operation. Currently, there are two private companies, in addition to Broward County, who are bidding on the issuing of building permits. Shafran must have the final alternative chosen by October 1st, when the new fiscal year begins. “Whether it goes to a private firm or Broward County, there has to be substantial changes to the level of service we’re providing,” said Shafran. “And those changes have to have me, as Director, as the point of contact as the person between doing the building reviews and inspection and the person who is communicating that message out. She sees her role as taking charge of reviewers, planners and inspectors. One change she made immediately after taking her position was limiting the number of times plans can go back and forth between the building designers and the plan review-
ers. Shafran has also helped property owners contact local design professionals who know the local building codes. “We can review the plans, but if the plans aren’t meeting our building and life safety codes, we can’t approve. There’s a liability there for everybody involved, so getting them to understand what needs to be done and what kind of designer they need to hire … we are working cordially and proactively,” she said. “One of the expressions I use with my staff is that every ‘no’ must lead to a ‘yes’.” She also commented on the “Two-Lane Initiative” proposal, providing only two lanes of traffic on Wilton Drive and increasing parking along the entire road. “From a business development perspective, the two lane initiative is a nice thing to have, but the other things that came along with the two lane initiative – the wider sidewalks, the landscaping – those things are important to the development of the city. Do we need wider sidewalks so we can have sidewalk cafes and creating that symmetry? Absolutely. Do we need shaded sidewalks? Absolutely. Those are the things that will aid in our development. It’s a future Las Olas or Hollywood Boulevard.” In addition to Wilton Drive, Shafran also sees other improvements that can be made in the city. On N.E. 26 Street, east of Dixie Highway she would like to see some business parks there and encourage businesses to relocate to Wilton Manors. The same could be said along Andrews Avenue. Both areas, she said, are regional traffic corridors and Andrews Avenue has mass transit. She said the city could use a façade improvement program, and she is trying to identify some grant funds so that the city can establish a program. She is also looking to short term improvements in parking on the north end of Wilton Drive. She said that the city is trying to identify lots and negotiating with property owners. But the best long-term land usage would be a mixed use development with a parking component tied in. “We have the national reputation for being a gay and lesbian destination and we need to continue to work on that and honor that reputation,” concludes Shafran. H
According to Think Progress, last summer Dr. Bachmann explained his position on homosexuality while offering theoretical advice to parents concerned that one of their children was gay. “We have to understand: barbarians need to be educated,” Bachmann said. “They need to be disciplined. Just because someone feels it or thinks it doesn’t mean that we are supposed to go down that road. That’s what is called the sinful nature. We have a responsibility as parents and as authority figures not to encourage such thoughts and feelings from moving into the action steps…” H
I think that’s exactly how things should work. I think it’s important for us to work through these issues because each state is going to be different and each community is going to be different.” Obama also reiterated that he feels that the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional and that the federal government should not be poking its nose into what the states are doing when it comes to marriage equality. H
Obama: “Marriage Should Be Left to States.” WASHINGTON, D.C. – When asked if he believes that civil marriage is a constitutional right during his press conference last week, President Barack Obama reminded the press of his record on LGBT issues and argued that marriage is best left to the states. He said that what happened in New York “was a good thing.
Congressional Republicans Don’t Consider Gay Marriage a Hot Topic WASHINGTON, D.C. – Using the power of the federal government to ban gay marriage was a main campaign point of the Republicans from the mid-1990s through the 2006 midterm election, but Capitoil Hill is all but silent on the topic since New York became the largest state to legalize gay marriage. According to Politico, it’s not that the issue has disappeared from the political landscape, it’s just that President Obama Continues on NEWS on Page 11

From a Distance Relationships are made up of small compromises, big sacrifices and huge pleasures, but one kink in the armor that often times befalls those in Florida is distance. Florida is a transient state, the home of snowbirds, travellers and seasonal workers … temporarily. So, what happens when one of you has to ultimately go home? Do you break up? Do you intend to stick it out with a date to come together full-time again? If you decided to stay together, the result is that you can go out and see many forlorn men missing someone who has gone ‘home,’ albeit possibly temporarily. I think this likely scenario is why many are very cautious of engaging in a relationship with anyone who isn’t permanently residing here. Sometimes, however, the pragmatic doesn’t correlate with the desire of the heart. So, you make every effort to be casual; you will enjoy it while it lasts and when they leave you will knock it on the head … but inevitably they stay longer, and you fall deeper into love. Then you pretend it won’t affect you, but then ‘D Day’ comes and you wave your sweetheart goodbye, wrestling with the uncertainty of the ‘if ’ and ‘how’ your relationship can stand the test of time and distance. You put on a brave face, smile through it, and continue to be the you that you have always been, yet you can’t shake the fear that perhaps this was just a holiday fling. If you are convinced it’s not, then you have a whole host of other questions searing through your mind: will they be faithful; will they forget you; will they ever come back? The void left by that person in your daily life presents itself within the first week; you aren’t going out as much – what is the point? After all, you aren’t looking for anyone else and your friends are all busy or with their own partners. That inevitable moment that you have put off all day when you have to get into bed alone, and you hope they are doing the same! You plod on with your days, keeping your phone at the ready for that call or text that reassures you that your love hasn’t forgotten you and misses you as much as you do. You spend more time thinking about
Letters to the Editor In response to the cover story “HIV/AIDS 30 Years Later; Hope, Reflection & New Challenges” in the June 9th issue of The Agenda. DEAR EDITOR, I really enjoyed reading the article by Alex Vaughn on HIV/AIDS 30 Years Later. I remember losing so many friends and people I loved back in the early 80's. One was very special to me – a friend who suffered weight loss, eye sight, and then became in a somewhat Dementia state towards the end. You are so right about the young guys now experiencing the death of close friends to the dreadful disease. I have so many friends who meet folks on line, and tell me how the young ones are not always wanting to play safe. I am also a HIV survivor of 16 years and am feeling wonderful. them than you ever did when they were around the corner. You wonder about your future and question your intentions. Very quickly it will become clear to you if you have a flash in the pan love or whether this might be the real thing; and if it is, how do you cope? Well, oddly once you have reassured yourself that they are the one, your one and only, then you have to relax into the trust and memories of the past good times and the hope of the future. Plan your vacations to include visits or meeting up with each other. Use technology to the best of its advantage; Skype, text, call – it won’t make up for not being able to hold them, but will go a long way in showing your love and receiving theirs. The next step is moving on, so to speak, with your life. That means not sitting at home alone watching Titanic and crying your eyes out or, worse, inventing scenarios in which you convince yourself not to trust them. If they don’t call when they say they would, then they are busy, it doesn’t automatically mean they are looking into another’s eyes. It isn’t easy, but it’s possible. As long as there is an equal level of commitment and communication, the time you are apart can fly by. Another important point in maintaining a long distance relationship is to pick your battles – don’t use the precious time you have together to bicker about missed calls or something petty. If you want to make it work, be more forgiving – drop the need to be right. Use your time on the phone to ask about how they are doing, what is new in their life and, of course, to ascertain the knowledge that they miss you. Don’t try and lie about how much fun you are having – strike a fair balance ‘I am having a great week, but I miss you’ will do wonders for making them feel even more love for you, because you have shown you aren’t needy or desperate, but you haven’t forgotten the void they have left. After all this, though, it is up to you and your partner to handle the treacherous path of a long distance relationship in the way

Who Knew? You’ve Got “Sex” – Online Sexual Addiction By sam knew, msw
The internet is everywhere – our homes, work, phone, even free of charge at public libraries. That is why the nearly 4 million online users who identify themselves as online sexual addicts face a daily battle. It’s the internet’s accessibility and affordability that enables this form of addiction. This over-exposure of graphic and gratuitous sexual material can generate such an unhealthy attitude towards sex. And like most addicts, these individuals are capable of acting out with life-altering consequences. Users compulsively access the “net” to download sexual images, visit sexually oriented chartrooms and participate in
live sexual video acts – usually involving some form of masturbation. Many become isolated by shame, which perpetuates the addiction. Although defining this form of addiction may be challenging due to the degrees of use, most professionals will identify it as an addiction when it becomes unmanageable or all-consuming, costing users their own reality. Cyber addicts have been known to go online for hours or literally days at a time, risking their relationships, job and health. The book In the Shadows of the Net: Breaking Free of Compulsive Online Sexual Behavior outlines five groups of users. The groups range from appropriate to inappropriate. Appropriate users include those who are capable of accessing sexual material online, even using it to enhance their real sex lives, and maintain a healthy, expressive sex life in their real world. Inappropriate groups include those who are at risk of becoming addicts, using the internet for exhibitionism or illegal sexual acts, such as meeting under-age sex partners. They tend to lack the ability to express their sexual desires in the real world, yet they are still in control of the image they project to the world (much like a functioning alcoholic). The most severe group is made up of
individuals who have some form of sexual addiction, and the internet is simply a tool in that addiction. They are detached from the real world and put themselves in numerous forms of high-risk situations in all aspects of their life. These users risk their jobs by viewing pornography at work. In addition, they jeopardize relationships, carrying on online fantasy relationships, some actually coming to fruition. This compulsion also takes its toll on the users’ physical and mental health, resulting in forms of depression and anxiety. As with most addicts of any other addiction, users must learn to live with their disorder, as they are never truly cured. The goal is to create an environment where addicts can communicate their desires, and even fulfill them in healthy ways. Users need to understand the drive of their compulsion and learn to reconstruct their perception of sexual expression. Most importantly, they need to spend less time in their virtual world and more learning to cope in their reality. H
If you go to the Apple store to look at pornography, you may have a problem.

is taking heat from his left flank for declining to support same-sex marriage and state legislatures across the country are still working to define marriage. The emphasis has shifted to economic issues and poll results that show the American public has become more comfortable with same-sex unions have combined to push the matter further back in GOP priorities. reported that the Church of England will review its policy on same-sex relationships and would consider letting gay clergy be ordained as bishops. Recently the church has been under pressure to conform to laws guaranteeing equal treatment to gays and lesbians. The BBC said the church's announcement suggests it might be on course for a greater acceptance of homosexuality -- a move that would be strongly resisted by traditionalists. H
Stonewall 1969 – Top 10 Most Influential Protests
TRENTON, NJ – Gay marriage groups are introducing a new lawsuit to legalize same-sex marriage. According to the Star-Ledger, the suit is led by Garden State Equality. Garden State Equality’s main argument is that the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled in 2006 that same-sex couples should be guaranteed the same rights as heterosexual married couples but, in a 4-3 vote, left it up to the state’s Legislature. The Legislature chose civil unions instead with the exact same legal rights. Critics say that the legal rights are in theory only. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has vowed to veto any same-sex marriage bill that comes across his desk. H
NEW YORK, NY – In a recent article, Time magazine listed the June 28, 1969, Stonewall riots as one of the top ten most influential protests in world history. (The Stonewall riots are often credited with the beginning of the modern gay rights movement.) Also included in the list were the riots in Egypt, which took place earlier this year, Purple Rain Protest in Cape Town, South Africa (1989), Tiananmen Square, China (1989), Muharram Protests in Iran (1978), Moratorium Against the Vietnam War (1969), Civil Rights March on Washington (1963) and the Boston Tea Party (1773). (FAIR) Education Act. The bill not only requires teachers to include LGBT accomplishments in history courses, but adds sexual orientation and gender identity to the state's pre-existing anti-discrimination clauses. According to Equality California in a written statement, studies have shown that inclusion of LGBT people in instructional materials is linked to greater student safety and lower rates of bullying. The bill is co-sponsored by Equality California and Gay-Straight Alliance Network. H
Philadelphia Leads the Way to Attracting Large Gay Conventions PHILADELPHIA, PA – The city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has been working hard to attract the gay tourist dollar and has three major LGBT events scheduled for this year. The announcement of these acclaimed national events proves that the Philadelphia region is a premier destination where people can “get their history straight and their nightlife gay,” the tagline from the popular gay campaign from the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation (GPTMC). The three major events that will take place later this year in Philadelphia are: ASANA Softball World Series, August 23-27 – The largest single sporting event for lesbians in the U.S. More than 1,000 lesbians and their friends from across the country will arrive for five days of

Lesbians Say “I Do” More than Gay Men NEW YORK, NY – According to the New York Post, lesbians are more likely to get legally married than gay men. In Connecticut, for example, 3,252 lesbian couples have wed since 2008, when same-sex marriage was legalized, compared with just 2,053 gay male couples. Massachusetts, which legalized samesex marriage in 2004, held 8,404 marriages to lesbians and 4,911 to gay male couples. New Hampshire has had 1,113 lesbian marriages, compared to 411 gay male marriages. Iowa has held 1,376 lesbian marriages and 772 gay male marriages. And finally, Vermont has held 1,157 lesbian marriages and 597gay male marriages. H

Cross to Bear By CLIFF DUNN
The multi-talented and multi-faceted A.J. Cross, general manager of Johnny’s Club, Bar & Lounge in Fort Lauderdale, is pleased to announce his 9th Annual Birthday Fundraiser (the reputedly 40-something Cross looks like he could pass for a man at least half his age - the little %@#$), to be held at Johnny’s on Thursday, July 14, starting at 9 p.m. Over the past 9 years, his Natal Day Events have helped raise thousands of dollars, with last year’s, "Needs Wheels" fundraiser for Father Bill Collins of Poverello netting enough from individual and corporate donors (including a last-minute Angel from the Outfield pledge from City County Credit Union) to put the good padre behind the wheel on schedule.
Third Point Capital. Singer - whose son is gay – along with Asness and Loeb – were known to view gay marriage from a libertarian perspective, as an issue of personal freedom, and had the clout and Republican credentials to provide insulation for skittish New York state senators anxious about a conservative backlash. Although Asness and Loeb supported Barack Obama in 2008, both subsequently split with the president over matters of policy, with Asness penning a scathing criticism of Obama in 2009 because of his perceived treatment of hedge funds during the Chrysler bankruptcy case, and Loeb similarly raising the cry against the president in writing last year. But Singer and Loeb have sup-
Last year, Father Bill Collins received a Ford Focus purchased for him by Maroone Ford along with the help of many local businesses. This year’s event will be a Masquerade Ball held in conjunction with a reunion of the legendary Cupid’s Cabaret, including former staff, entertainers, dancers and XXX Adult Entertainment Stars courtesy of Howard Andrew from Fabscout (and himself a former GM of Cupid’s), with the possibility of a very Special Guest Appearance. This year’s soiree will raise money for Covenant House of Fort Lauderdale (http://www.covenanthousefl.org/). Costumes or masques are requested of all attendees. Wall Street Muscle Pushes NY Gay Marriage Win An unlikely alliance of bedfellows came together in the crucial days leading up to New York State’s historic legislation legalizing same-sex marriage. The New York Times reported last week that critical support for passage came from a cabal of Wall Street heavyweights known for their support for conservative causes. In the run-up to the vote, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo approached billionaire financier Paul Singer, a deep-pocketed Republican donor (and friend of Rudy Giuliani), along with hedge fund moguls Cliff Asness of AQR Capital and Daniel Loeb of
ported previous same-sex marriage campaigns, including an event last fall for the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER). The triumvirate let Cuomo know that they were willing to set aside political differences and each followed through with six-figure checks made out to the lobbying effort in support of the legislation.

Cross-Eyed
“She Looks Back At Me” By AJ CROSS A very attractive 19-year old young man from Puerto Rico looks at me with his hazel green eyes and begins to tell me about an important woman in his life. She is a woman who is brave and bold and empowers him whenever she is around. He tells me that it is only when she is present that he feels all of his inhibitions fade away. He tells me that when he looks into the mirror "she looks back at me". Carlos is a 19-year old transexual with hopes of one day being able to afford the operation and hormones that will allow him to become a woman. He sits across from me in cargo shorts, sandals and a white tank top. From where I sit, he is a very cute guy with intelligent eyes and he speaks with a slight accent which gives off a certain naivety I find charming. I wondered why a person born to be such a beautiful boy was not happy with that. In my ignorance, I thought perhaps it would be more understandable if he were esthetically unattractive and because of that he decided to put knife to skin in order to achieve a higher level of appeal. As our conversation continued, I began to realize that his interest in changing his sex had absolutely nothing to do with whether or not he was attractive – or even if he perceived himself that way. He said it best when he stated that "God made a mistake and I was supposed to be a woman". Now as a man who is very happy being a man and very happy with the fact that I have the proper anatomical equipment that comes with being a man, I had to really step outside of my own head to truly grasp this concept. He began to describe some of the reasons why he believed himself to be a woman trapped in a man's body. He told me that he had dreams of giving birth and that he would wake up a with a sense of calm and happiness, and that as a child he would hold his teddy bear like a mother holding its baby and would walk it around his house in his younger sister’s baby stroller. He said that he had a total disinterest in men's clothing and would secretly envy his mother because she would wear beautiful dresses and shoes every Sunday for church while he was forced to wear pants, a button down shirt, vest and a bow tie. He continued explaining to me that he is disgusted by his penis. Even when men have told him that he was large and it was beautiful, he would simply turn over and let the men "have their way with him". He was open about the fact that he had only ever bottomed and that he would feel sick in his stomach if someone even suggested that he should top them. He said that he never let a guy perform oral on him and would insist that he do all of the servicing in an intimate situation. He told me that he would only sleep with men who treated him like he was a woman and since woman didn't have a penis that no one should have an interest in his. Again, this was a very difficult mindset for me to grasp because, from my standpoint, the fact that the person I am with has a penis is one of the great physical appeals. I really wanted to understand all of this and, as I have encountered so many drag queens, transvestites and transsexuals in my life never having had the opportunity to explore
the topic with them, I could not lose this chance to delve into the psyche of a young man who was headed in that direction. I asked him the following questions and here were his responses: Me: Have you ever referred to your butt as a vagina during sex? Carlos: Yes! That is what it is. Me: Have you had sex with another man dressed as a woman? Carlos: No! I’m not a fake. I do not want to trick someone or shock them. I will have sex with a man as my true self soon enough. Me: As I sit here speaking to you, I find that you have a normal guys voice and you come across rather masculine. How come you do not alter your voice or the way you carry yourself to appear more feminine? Carlos: Again, I’m not trying to pretend I am a woman. I am a woman trapped in this body. My voice is my voice for now. But one day it will change. This whole thing I am going to do is about being real and showing the world who I really am, and if I start faking that now, there is no point. As the conversation continued, I asked him to show me some pictures of him as a woman and he smiled as if he was so happy I asked. He pulled out his cell phone and began to slide through photos of him in drag and I have to admit he was just as beautiful dressed as woman as he was as a boy. He began to tell me that the world is just learning to understand – or at least accept – homosexuals, and even homosexuals have not really tried to understand transvestites and transsexuals. He told me that he thinks it has always been and will always be a harder struggle for people like him, because he is in the minority of minorities. I think he is right. I think that we, as a united gay community, need to do a better job of understanding one another before we demand that heterosexuals try to understand us. We need to seek out people like Carlos who think they are alone in their thoughts and feelings and let them know that they are not alone and that who they are or who they think they should be has a place in this world. I tell this story to celebrate the courage of Carlos and all of my fellow gay brothers who think they should be my sisters. If you are a boy who looks in the mirror and sees a woman looking back at you, then this story is to inspire and encourage you and give you some love. Be true to yourself and it will work out. I end this week’s columns with a quote from Carlos; “sitting down to pee is more comfortable”. H

Big Plans For Fort Lauderdale Beach Royal Palms Grand Opening The new Royal Palms Resort celebrated its grand opening last Saturday, and what a party bash it was. Congrats to Lord Richard Gray and his staff for putting together a fabulous get-together. The property, which is located on Breakers Avenue, was shining with spectacular floral designs by Bobby Kyser of Pedals Panache. The showstoppers of the day were the fully nude male models that positioned themselves on floats in the two pools. At first I thought they were mannequins, but after studying them for 30 minutes saw movements and realized they were very real, live people. One of the highlights of the day was seeing and conversing with longtime friend Jay Lynch, known to most of you as columnist Mrs. Beasley. It had been several years since we had seen each other. Jay looked great and was in good spirits. Hotelier Richard Gray, who is spearheading the purchase of many beach properties, gave partygoers a tip that the beach is being developed into a quaint area to be called North Beach Village that will be pedestrian friendly and made up of small café’s, boutique motels and hotels. The investment group that Gray is working with has already purchased a dozen properties in the area.

An alert Antonio Dumas brought the dog into the store, cooled it down and called the Ft. The Forgotten Gem Zuckerello’s Maintains Their Reputation as a Consistent Delight By TIM SLIVINSKI
Amid the openings and closings of new restaurants in the world of food, it is sometimes way too easy to forget those restaurants which have been serving delicious food to our South Florida community for several years. Zuckerello’s is one of those places that sort of ‘flies under the radar’. Mention it to someone and they frequently will comment something like, “oh yeah, I haven’t been there in a while.” I must admit that I am guilty of the very same thing. A recent Saturday night saw my partner and I driving down Commercial Blvd. feeling hungry and ready for dinner. We saw Zuckerello’s and decided to pull in. A fairly full parking lot was a good omen in the slow summer season. We walked in to a dining room full of conversation, clinking forks and delicious aromas. We were shown to a booth and realized that this place is much larger than you may realize. The dining room is extensive with different seating areas of tables and booths and a full service bar at the rear of the restaurant. We placed a cocktail order with our friendly server, and he reappeared quickly with a basket of warm dinner

rolls and a delicious garlicky sauce for dipping. We decided to begin our gastronomic adventure with an appetizer from the features menu; an order of fish cakes sounded like a good beginning. They arrived perfectly crisp on the exterior and brimming with moist fish on the interior. They were plated atop a zingy, zesty, crispy red cabbage slaw that played a delicious flavor contrast to the fish cakes. Drizzled over the cakes was a cilantro aioli. It was nice play on the traditional crab cakes and a feature I would happily order again. The appetizer plate was clean and ready to put away — quickly! We both opted for a salad before our entrees. I love a Caesar salad before dinner, and a large bowl of crisp romaine with chunky, buttery, garlicky croutons and creamy Caesar dressing did not disappoint. I was pleased to see bright green, fresh romaine throughout the salad. My partner opted for a house salad, which was a refreshing mix of greens, red onion, tomato and Kalamata olives in a creamy Italian style dressing. (The addition of the olives to a tradition-
Croque-Monsieur
A croque-monsieur is a hot ham and cheese grilled sandwich. It originated in France as a fast-food snack served in cafés and bars. The cheese is typically emmental or gruyere and it’s coated in a Mornay or Béchamel sauce. The name is based on the verb croquer ("to crunch or bite") and the word monsieur ("mister")—the reason behind the combination of the two words is unknown—and it is commonly shortened to croque. While the origins of the croque-monsieur are unknown, there are many speculations on how it was first created. The croque-monsieur's first recorded appearance on a Parisian café menu was in 1910. Its earliest mention in literature appears to be in volume two of Proust's Remembrance of Things Past in 1918. (À la recherche du temps perdu) The croque madame (also known as the croque-cheval), is served with a fried or poached egg on top. The croque provençal, with fresh tomato slices. The croque auvergnat, with bleu d'Auvergne cheese instead of Gruyère. And you can imagine lots of other “croques”. After all you are the chef ! • 2 tablespoons butter • 2 tablespoons all purpose flour • 1 cup whole milk • Pinch of ground nutmeg • 4 slices firm white sandwich bread • 4 ounces thinly sliced ham • 4 slices of Gruyère cheese
• 1 tablespoon melted butter • 1/4 cup grated Gruyère cheese Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add flour and stir 1 minute. Gradually whisk in milk. Add nutmeg. Increase heat to medium-high and boil until sauce thickens, whisking constantly, about 2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Congrats… you have just made a Béchamel sauce. Preheat broiler. Place 2 bread slices on work surface. Top each with half of the ham, a spoonful of sauce and a slice of Gruyère. Top with remaining bread. Heat a heavy frying pan over a low heat. Brush sandwiches with melted butter. Add to the pan and cook until deep golden brown, about 2 minutes per side. Transfer to small baking sheet. Spoon on the rest of the sauce, and then the grated cheese over sandwiches. Broil until cheese begins to brown, about 2 minutes. Yummy. H

May I Take Your Order? By MICHAEL FRENCH
Dining out until the recent past was primarily reserved for celebrating life’s events, like Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day. Frantic schedules leave many of us with little spare time or desire to cook a meal. Eating at restaurants has become a lifestyle, especially in Florida. Newspapers and magazines are rife with reviews of restaurants’ atmospheres, cuisine and service. However, I don’t recall reading many articles about how diners should behave in a restaurant. Know anyone you dread going out to dinner with because their behavior and attitude makes you want to crawl under the table? I do – poor manners combined with their bloated sense of entitlement (i.e., cannot let the server pass by without wanting something, or complain about the smallest thing that isn’t exactly what they demanded). It seems they aren’t happy unless they can victimize themselves. Neediness, high maintenance,
rudeness, etc.; these ingredients are a recipe for a not very “tasty” dinner. Drama at the dinner table is unacceptable, especially when you’re paying 50 bucks for a steak only to have heartburn for dessert! When someone is nice to you but rude to a server or bartender, this is not the conduct of an authentically kind person. Why? This sort of individual is a bully because they are being disrespectful to the server, etc., who they assume is not typically free to defend him or herself from fear of losing their tip or even their job. It appears too many people view the server as their personal “servant” during the time they are in the restaurant. The difference between the definition of server and servitude has, sadly, blurred. The cliché “the customer is always right,” besides being far from correct, doesn’t give people license to be inappropriate. Patrons need to remember, they are buying the product, not the person. Receiving proper value for the price, served with politeness in a timely, professional manner is all any body should feel entitled to expect. Oh, there’s that word, entitled! One can have a delicious meal and great service without being demanding. First and foremost, don’t forget the “Golden Rule!” Just because you’re paying for the dinner does not excuse forgetting this universal truth. Being courteous
will vastly improve your chances of getting exactly what you want. Restaurant personnel are more likely to go out of their way to please you when you show respect for them. Being a demanding, high maintenance and condescending boor will get you nothing but the bare minimum of service, at best. The movie “Waiting,” though an exaggeration, is a comedic take on the restaurant business but does send a message of “beware” if you mistreat service personnel. It’s very easy to have a superbly memorable dining experience without being demanding. Other than the “Golden Rule”, let’s start with two simple words which are very effective: “please” and “thank you”. Remember them? Make eye contact with the server. Listen when they describe the menu. Say “I”d like to have,” not “I want”. Don’t say “Tell the chef.” A server “telling” the chef is like confronting a pit bull on steroids. Refrain from tearing a dish apart, substituting facets of the dish until it doesn’t even resemble what the chef took great pains to create. Go to a restaurant that has a dish you will order without changing anything about it! Save the server and kitchen staff a lot of grief. Never tap the glass, point instead of speaking, snap your fingers or pull on the server’s clothing. Maybe a few visits to a
therapist will stave off your chest pounding power trips when you go to restaurants. Don’t punish the server with a bad tip if the steak is tough, or the wine isn’t “big” enough. He or she made neither. Tip them fairly, according to their attitude and service panache. A well-deserved good tip equals 20% or more. The ingredients of class, grace, courtesy, empathy, patience, basic good manners and a dash or humility make a great recipe for an enjoyable restaurant experience. Your dining companions, server, taste buds and blood pressure will thank you. Bon appetit! H

The Watch Maketh the Man By ALEX VAUGHN There are many theories about what certain items of clothing say about a man, but none are truer than the wristwatch. Undoubtedly the male equivalent to an ‘It Bag’ for women, this is the one area of fashion that still belongs to men. You can tell someone whatever you want about your lifestyle, personal taste, income bracket and many other little hints of your social standing with just your watch. Are you flashy? Demure? Sporty? Whichever watch you invest your time and money in, chose wisely. Don’t try and be someone you are not; that said, the right watch can speak volumes about you even if you are just wearing boardshorts. When you say watch, brands come flying to your mind left right and center: Rolex, Omega, Timex, Casio, Jaeger, Cartier, to name just those that hit me straight up! Like so many things in life, the watch you choose should reflect you; are you a fashionista with cash in the bank? A Diamond Rolex or a Chanel J12? Maybe you have a little less cash in the bank. How about a Guess or Rado? You might be sporty and not flashy at

all, suggesting a G-shock Sports Watch or a Tag Heuer. The offering today on high quality watches is phenomenal, any design house worth their salt offers a time piece that suitably incorporates the heritage of the brand, from Oakley to Hermes. So, how do you pick the right watch? First, pick your price point and the vein in which you want to go, and try them all on. See what looks right (your skin tone, your current lifestyle, etc. will all influence your watch choice.) I have chosen my top picks for watches across all income brackets. Remember, a watch is a good investment that will retain its value and capability for a long time (I am currently wearing my late grandfather’s Omega Seamaster from 1969). One word of warning, though: A high-quality timepiece, like a good car, needs maintenance – and that is not cheap. However, it is worth it. H

Over 40 Fitness Guide
You’re Not Over the Hill! So you’re over 40? Even though some in our youth-oriented, megalomaniac society may consider you to be over the hill, there’s no need to retire to your rocking chair – not yet! Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably noticed that, more and more, men are staying healthy and looking hotter and sexier way beyond 40, 50 and even 60. What are their secrets? No secrets at all; they’ve simply learned the importance of living wisely and taking care of themselves step by step, day by day. Here are some tips and preventative measures you can take right now to get your body ready for 50 more years of health and happiness. Consider your prostate. At 40, the prostate gland begins a growth spurt, a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia. If you’re peeing a lot at night, this may be happening to you. Don’t worry. Benign prostatic hyperplasia is rarely life-threatening. To treat this condition, see your doctor and get a prescription for alpha blockers which relax the prostate smooth muscle. In conjunction with this, a regular prostate exam is a must for all guys over 40. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, according to the American Cancer Society.

Weight training is a must! Once you hit 50, you begin to lose muscle mass by as much as 15% per decade. In fact, one recent study states that at about the age of 25, guys begin to lose a half a pound of lean muscle per year! To stave off decreasing muscle mass, prevent back, hip and knee injuries, and protect against heart disease and high cholesterol, incorporate strength training into your exercise program. If you’re already lifting, keep up the good work. If you think it’s too late to start pumping iron, remember that you can still build lean muscle by lifting weights into your 80’s. Watch your gut. As guys age, their bellies tend to expand, resulting in dangerous amounts of visceral abdominal fat that can increase the risk of colorectal cancer and heart related problems, including heart attacks and strokes. If your waist exceeds 40 inches, you are asking for trouble! To prevent this dangerous girth, stay active, use the stairs at work. Take a walk before or after supper. Try implementing a half-hour of cardio into your workout plan at least 3 times a week. Do your crunches at night while watching TV.
Watch what you eat. To reduce your risk of obesity, Type II Diabetes, hypertension, cancer and heart disease, be aware of good nutritional principles. Eat more high fiber, complex, low glycemic index carbohydrates such as whole grains, nuts, fresh fruits and vegetables to fuel your body. Get your protein from lean chicken and fresh cold water fish, which are high in Omega 3 fatty acids, the good fats that keep cholesterol levels in check. Deep six all processed fast foods and trans fats from your diet. Drink less. According to several studies, drinking beer and wine in moderation can deliver protection against heart attacks, strokes and hypertension. But, before you race off to Happy Hour, get the whole truth. Drinking more than one drink per day, defined as a 5 ounce glass of wine, one 12 ounce beer or 1.5 ounces of 80 proof liquor can increase your risk of liver disease and stroke, according to the Mayo Clinic. Fit, fabulous and over 40? Show them your stuff, you hot, smokin’ Daddy. H

Chasing Dane Chase Coleman on Living In Between By MARK GRAY
Chase Coleman appears in the new online gay drama In Between Men, which focuses on four young men in New York City.
Photos courtesy, In Between Men
“Too many gay men look outside themselves for affirmation of worth,” says Jennifer Gelfer, director and executive producer of the newest gay drama series to heat up the web, In Between Men. “Gay men are not taught to love themselves. They’re often told they should be something else, namely ‘straight’. “Dane is a product of that. He is the American dream – blonde, handsome, and a doctor – but he doesn’t allow himself to realize what a catch he really is.” In Between Men follows the lives of four friends in New York City living “in between” the gay and straight worlds of New York. They are Dalton, Dane, Jacob and Ben. Through their wild adventures and – often-times – racy storylines, the show examines the relationships the guys share with one another, their colleagues, lovers, and the city of New York. Dane, played by blonde Adonis Chase Coleman, is the youngest of the group. Like many young gay guys new to the scene, he is naïve in love and his penchant for chasing bad boys gets him in trouble. Can you relate to Dane feeling like a man living between two worlds? I grew up in the Deep South. New York, where I call home now, is a completely different world. I like to think I fit right in, but there is a part of me that longs to return to the pace and charm of the south. How are you and Dane alike? We both share a certain vulnerability. Also, like Dane, there are things in my past, mistakes I have made, that I regret and I’m learning from.
How are you different? Dane is more susceptible to being taken advantage of. My years in New York have toughened my skin. Have you built a strong armor to protect yourself ? I have a tendency to put up walls and now allow myself to get hurt. As an actor, isn’t it part of your job to strip down those walls? That’s probably why I enjoy playing Dane so much. It forces me to rip the walls down and explore my vulnerability. Is it true you were a troubled teen? I had my fair share of being bullied and bullying others as a teen. Much of it was verbal rather than physical. I had a lot of insecurities. I still do. Insecurities and fear can manifest into bullying. It’s not the way anyone should handle things. What were you struggling with? Finding a purpose in life. I have always focused and struggled with discovering why I'm here and what it is I should do for the world. What have you discovered that you can share with fans? There is a quote that represents my philosophical view: “Cast aside all in this reality and become one within yourself.” Never let anyone or anything distract or alter you from what you want in life. Set your mind and do it. Is that what led you to New York? Yes, I came five years ago to test the waters. It was my junior year of college and I was planning on returning back to Louisiana to finish school. Things went so
well with auditions, I decided to stay and finish my degree online. Dane comes to New York to pursue his medical career. What happens that makes things go so wrong for him? Dane tends to be gullible and a bit too caring at times. His strong sense of compassion often leads to guys taking advantage of him. Like Paul… Exactly. Dane has an emptiness that he has never figured out how to fill. Paul takes advantage of Dane's compassion and generosity and mentally abuses him. Paul’s a drug addict and Dane thinks he can save him. Yes. He wants everyone to be okay. I can relate to that. Have you had experience with drugs in the city? I have never been a fan of drugs. I don’t mind alcohol every now and then. After a long day, a drink is definitely a great way to relax and unwind. But hard drugs have never been an interest of mine. Why do you think Dane would risk his medical career for this guy? Paul represents what Dane isn't: the crazy, loose, “in crowd” boy. The kind of popular guy that Dane wishes he could have been a part of in high school. It’s interesting what we will do for acceptance. It is one of the main challenges of twenty-somethings today. Most people long for love and the acceptance of someone that they care for. The problem is that we all have completely different ideas of what
love is, so we can never truly get on the same wavelength. Maybe that's why we have such a difficulty in getting along and having peace? It sounds like you’ve given this topic a lot of thought. I'm executive producing a film that I wrote, and will direct and star in called Into the Rose Garden. It deals specifically on this issue. Have you figured out when life gets easier? I'm not sure things ever get easier. I imagine as you get older, you begin to discover more about yourself; the good and the bad. Are you in a good place today? I am happy now, but I remember many times in my past when I was quite unhappy – mostly from stupid mistakes I made. That’s ok, though. You live and learn. True. I wouldn’t trade in those days because they made me the strong, driven, determined guy I am today. If you could play any of the guys on the show besides Dane, who would you want to be? Benjamin Reed, because he's the rebellious leader. He's the one who seems to say “f ” the rules. and looks for the fun in life. Those Marlon Brando/James Dean types appeal to me. H
