A major redevelopment that was designed for the area south of Five Points on Dixie Highway in Wilton Manors has been moved to Oakland Park’s redevelopment Main Street area. According to the architect, Edward Tokarcik, two individual clients wanted a new building in Wilton Manors. One is an owner of a gymnasium who wanted to move to a new location and the other, an owner of a movie theater. The original plan was to redevelop the area on the east side of Dixie Highway from N.E. 24 Court to N.E. 12 Avenue and east to the Florida East Coast Railway tracks. Also in the planning were a drive-through gourmet restaurant and a parking garage. The project started out as two individual clients looking for a building in Wilton Manors and it then turned into a threeblock urban renewal project and was look-
ing to expand beyond that. At this point, I don’t think any of the projects are going forward. They were all very interconnected to each other. Tokarcik, a resident of Wilton Manors, was disappointed that the project could not go forward. “We worked out the design concepts and worked with a design firm and we spoke with two developers and their prices were close,” said Tokarcik. But the project fell through. “Either the lots were too expensive – they were bought at the height of the market – and you can’t get parking, you can’t pass the parking requirements. And I actually designed a 500-car garage and when that did not go forward, nothing could go forward. There were other small stores across the street, none of which were making it because of the lack of parking.” The gymnasium owner, which was orig-
inally planned south of N.E. 24 Street on Dixie Highway, wanted his gym to be set apart from any others. He wanted an upscale four-floor gym complex in a building people would want to go to. The ground floor would have the main entrance and a café, the second floor would have the weight lifting equipment and exercise machines, the third floor would have open workout areas as well as a swimming pool and the top level would be a sundeck. There would have been 25,000 square feet of usable space. A movie complex would have a 500-car parking garage in the back. On top of the parking garage, there would be space for a club or restaurant. Tokarcik estimated that if the parking garage would have been kept full, parking fees would have carried the whole project financially. ‘OP FACELIFT’ continues on Page 14
Taxpayer Dollars Wasted? Penis Study Puts Government In Hot Water By ALEX VAUGHN The federal government helped fund a study that examined what effect a gay man's penis size has on his sex life and general well-being. The study was among several backed by the National Institutes of Health that have come under scrutiny from a group claiming the agency is wasting valuable tax dollars at a time when the country is trying to control its debt. This particular research resulted in a 2009 report titled, "The Association Between Penis Size and Sexual Health Among Men Who Have Sex with Men." The study reported, among its findings, that gay men with "below average penises"
were more likely to assume a "bottom" sexual position, while those with "above average penises" were more likely to assume a "top" sexual position. Those with average penises identified themselves as "versatile" in the bedroom. The study, which last year was published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, claimed there previously had been "little research among men who have sex with men assessing the association between penis size and socio-sexual health." The study found that men with larger penises were more likely to contract certain sexually transmitted diseases. It also found that men with above-average penises ‘PENIS STUDY’ continues on Page 15

ACLU Calls on Senators to Support Anti-Bullying Legislation MIAMI, FL – The Florida Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) along with 29 other organizations have sent a letter encouraging U.S. Senators Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio to stand against bullying and become co-sponsors for the Student NonDiscrimination Act (SNDA). SNDA would protect students from harassment based on actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity in public elementary and secondary schools. The bill was introduced simultaneously in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. The bills were introduced by Sen. Al Franken (D-Minnesota) and Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colorado). “The Student Non-Discrimination Act will have a profound impact on improving the lives of LGBT students in Florida and around the country,” said Nikki Fisher, ACLU of Florida Advocacy Coordinator. Fisher continued saying, “As Floridians, we hope our Senators will take a stance to protect all students and provide a safe and tolerant education. Senator Nelson and Rubio should make joining as co-sponsors and safety of all students a priority.” While federal laws currently protect students on the basis of their race, color, sex, religion, disability or national origin, no Federal statute explicitly protects students on the basis of actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. Christian Family Coalition Praises Oakland Park Commissioner OAKLAND PARK, FL – In a written press release, Anthony Verdugo, founder and executive director of the Christian Family Coalition, sent a letter of support to Oakland Park City Commissioner Jed Shank. Shank was the sole vote on the city commission against a proclamation honoring June as “Gay Pride Month” and last month’s Stonewall Street Festival and Parade in Wilton Manors. Two weeks ago, LGBT activists confronted Shank at the city commission meeting concerning his vote against the proclamations. The video of Shank being reprimanded by LGBT community leaders at the Oakland Park City Commission meeting can be seen at www.FloridaAgenda.com. Shank stated his vote against the proclamations was due to the Stonewall Festival falling on Father’s Day and there was no balancing proclamation honoring fathers. Yet, Shank himself, who could have brought up a Father’s Day proclamation, failed to do so. “Since when is a proclamation extolling ‘pride’ in biologically aberrant sexual behavior and practices more important than celebrating a nationally observed day honoring fathers? The only disrespectful and hypocritical ones here are the intolerant extremists imposing their homosexualist [sic] views on the

rest of society. Where is the tolerance and respect for Commissioner Shank's point of view? These bigoted extremists owe Commissioner Jed Shank, and everyone else, a public apology. Of course, they won't do it, thus showing their true agenda of hate, bigotry, intolerance and discrimination,” wrote Verdugo in the press release. H

“Mommie Queerest” Comes to Fort Lauderdale FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – The L.A. Weekly Theater Award-winning comedy “Mommie Queerest” is coming to Ft. Lauderdale’s Empire Stage as its fourth stop on national tour. Everyone knows Christina Crawford’s tell-all about her tumultuous relationship with her famous mother, Joan Crawford. First there was a book, then the 1981 movie that became an instant cult classic. It’s been thirty years since Faye Dunaway donned the famous arched eyebrows and big shoulder pads. For the last seven years, Jamie Morris’ twisted version, “Mommie Queerest,” has had sold-out audiences asking the simple question: “What if Joan had really been a man all those years?” Told by an all-male cast of four, “Mommie Queerest” entertains the notion that Crawford was actually a man in drag, a fact she hid from her fans, her children, and the world. Even when Christina finds out, takes revenge, and writes “Daddy Dearest,” it’s Joan who still has the last laugh. “Mommie Queerest” will play Empire Stage (1140 N. Flagler) from Thursday August 11 through Sunday, August 28. The play runs Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 5 p.m. for a total of twelve shows. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased online at smarttix.com. H

“Big Brother” Live Feeds Show Homophobic Rant LOS ANGELES, CA – CBS’ summer reality show, “Big Brother,” turned ugly last week when returning houseguest Jeff Schroeder let out a homophobic rant concerning the gay Dumbledore character in the Harry Potter series. On the show “Big Brother”, a dozen or so “houseguests” are sequestered in a large house and each week one houseguest is voted out of the house. After three months, the final houseguest wins $500,000. Fans of the show can watch the houseguests 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on the internet, while CBS broadcasts 3 highly edited hours a week. Online viewers caught the following exchange between houseguests Jeff, Kalia and Rachel concerning the Harry Potter series of books and movies: Jeff: Who's Dumbledorf ? Who is that, the big guy? Rachel: Why would she [J.K. Rowling] want a gay character? Jeff: That would be perverted! Kalia then explains that Rowling made the character so that her kids and other kids would understand homosexuality. Jeff: How, is he meant to be gay? He doesn't have any gay tendencies. Kalia: Maybe that's the point. So that people like you don't stereotype gay people. Jeff: What do you mean stereotypes around gay people? He's in a school with little kids, you can't make that guy gay! Kalia: Why? Gay men can't work with little kids? Jeff: It isn't right to have it in a little kids book and have the headmaster locked away in this magical land, be gay. That isn't the right kind of writing to do. Kalia: I don't see why not. Jeff: Oh I can see your PC view of it, but it's not the right thing to do. Kalia: Why is it PC? Jeff: Listen, you know what I'm talking about and don't make it seem like you’re doing the right thing by saying it's not. You are going to let your kids read a story
book where little kids go to fantasy camp without their parents and the guy is gay? Kalia: Just because he is gay, doesn't mean there is a thing wrong with him. Jeff: Get the F**k out. Don't start with that f-in’ sh*t. Don't tell me the right answer for f-in’ TV. Kalia: I'm not doing it for TV. You want to know why I do it? My little sister is gay. Jeff: I don't give a f**k if your sister's gay. Think about what it is! Kalia: I truly don't understand. Jeff: You don't understand what I'm talking about? Then I don't understand either. Kalia: I don't understand why he can't be a headmaster. Jeff: You're right, you're right. I don't want to talk about it then. Andy Dehnart of the website Reality Blurred noted that the live feed segment will not likely be aired in the broadcast version of “Big Brother”. H

Three “Glee” Stars to Leave After Next Season HOLLYWOOD, CA – Three stars of the television series “Glee” will be leaving after the third season of the popular television show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lea Michele, Chris Colfer and Cory Monteith will not be returning for the fourth season. Ryan Murphy, creator of “Glee,” told The Hollywood Reporter that the three main characters will be among other characters who will graduate from the fictional McKinley High School season at the end of the third season. Murphy said that when the show started last year, it was made clear that the characters were sophomores and that if the characters stuck around for six years, he would be accused of being unrealistic. Murphy also said that a major plot line of the third season will be the “students” getting ready to leave high school when graduation comes at the end of the year. H

Instead, the town’s two judges will be doing all future marriages in the small eastern New York town of over 35,000 people. Centi has been town clerk for 10
years. Centi told the Albany Times Union that being a Catholic, she believes marriage is a sacrament and should only be between a man and a woman. Centi said she will remain as the elected town clerk and continue to issue marriage licenses to all eligible applicants, but will stop performing weddings saying that her faith prevents her from marrying same-sex couples. Centi used to officiate at about four weddings a month. H
Court Reinstates Parts of DADT SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals has rescinded a portion of its ruling immediately lifting the ban on gays serving in the military known as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”. The move was made in order for the court to re-evaluate its July 6th ruling, which totally lifted DADT. The U.S. Justice Department filed a request for a temporary stay in which the government provided the court with additional information – specifically: a declaration of Major General Steven S. Hummer, Chief of Staff of the Repeal Implementation Team of the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness; the representation that only one service member has been discharged since the passage of the Repeal Act; the representation that the Secretaries of the Military Departments, Chiefs of the Military Services, and Commanders of the Combatant Commands have recently submitted their written advice regarding the status of their preparation for repeal and ability to satisfy the certification standards set by Congress; and the representation that repeal certification will be presented to the President, Secretary of Defense, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in a matter of weeks, by the end of July or early in August. Although temporarily reinstating most of its stay of the injunction, the court kept in place the part of the injunction that bars the military from investigating, penalizing or discharging anyone from the military pursuant to the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy. G.O.P. Presidential Candidates Split Over Anti-Gay Bill DES MOINES, IA – Most G.O.P. presidential candidates have refused to sign a pledge titled “The Marriage Vow: A Declaration of Dependence Upon Marriage and Family” that was unveiled last week by Iowa’s FAMiLY Leader, a right-wing political organization. The organization’s influential leader, Bob Vander Plaats, told all the candidates that they must sign the pledge to get the organization’s endorsement. So far, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson and former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman have balked at signing the pledge. Only U.S. Representative Michele Bachmann and former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum have signed the pledge. The pledge includes 14 points the candidates must agree upon, including: homosexuality is a choice; homosexuality is like polygamy, adultery and polyandry; homosexuality is a public health risk; sex is better after marriage; pornography should be banned and to reject Sharia Islam. FAMILY Leader wants all candidates to sign the pledge by August 1 for their support. Most candidates that refused to sign the vow said they did so not because they agree with same-sex marriage, but they felt the pledge went too far in some of its 14 points. H

India Courts Gay Travel Dollar NEW DELHI, INDIA – The Times of India has reported that five gay travel agencies offer customized packages to India that include tours, spiritual camps, wedding and honeymoon packages and a promise of an “experience sans negative incidents” that they face in conservative cultures. Weddings do not carry any legal status, but gay visitors do it anyway to experience the traditional Indian wedding. “Customized packages – everything from yoga, spiritual, weddings, honeymoon or even surrogacy tours – are the main attractions for foreign gay tourists to India,” said Abhinav Goel, founder of OutJourneys.com, a travel agency dedicated to gay travel. Though there is no specific data on the actual numbers of gay overseas tourists, even if one percent of all tourists were from the LGBT community, the numbers would be huge. In 2010, India welcomed 5.58 million foreign tourists, up by 9.3 per cent over 2009. H

Man Rejected to Give Blood Because He “Appeared Gay” GARY, IN – Aaron Pace, 22, was not permitted to give blood because, as authorities at the clinic stated, he “appeared gay”. Pace admitted that he may be effeminate, but that he is not a homosexual. Pace said that he was humiliated and embarrassed, but it was not right that homeless people can give blood but homosexuals can not. The Food and Drug Administration policy, implemented in 1983, states that men who have had sex — even once — with another man (since 1977) are not allowed to donate blood. The policy was sparked by concerns that HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, was tainting the blood supply. And, back then, screening tests to identify HIV-positive blood had not yet been developed. Pace visited Bio-Blood Components, Inc., in Gary, which pays up to $40 per visit for blood and plasma donations. But during the interview screening process, Pace said he was told he could not be a blood donor there because he “appears to be a homosexual.” H

Have Perceptions Really Changed? A perception is a judgement and every minority – and, by token, the majority – has been labelled. We see a particular person and make a judgement, about who they are, where they are from, what they do and how they think all from a set of benchmarks we have either been taught or have compiled from experience. Recent statistics have shown that acceptance of the gay community is on the rise and coming into a clear majority. But, when you get down to the nitty-gritty, you have to ask how much have perceptions changed? Over the course of many years, there have been cruel and unfounded beliefs about the community, that gay people are pedophiles or disease carriers. HIV/AIDS was initially dubbed ‘the gay cancer’ only affecting gay men. It was seen as ONLY a gay disease. As education has evolved, so too have perceptions. Most of us now understand HIV/AIDS does not discriminate against gender or sexual orientation. As understanding has developed, so too has acceptance. Times have undoubtedly changed and one could perceive that perceptions of the community have not only changed, but have evolved into the positive. However, if we look a little deeper we can see that for every change there are still areas in which gay people are hugely discriminated against, even though there is scientific evidence and statistics to the contrary. One example: Statistics show that heterosexual men are more prone to pedophilia than gay men, and a lot of the ‘evidence’ that people used to support the idea gay men were pedophiles was what people referred to as ‘sexually deviant behavior’. Even though evidence is now clear that pedophilia is rife in the heterosexual community, people still see gays as perverts and deviants. In addition, just this week a straight man was turned away from a blood bank for looking ‘too gay’. There is still a FDA ban on gay men donating blood. In the early stages before HIV/AIDS could be determined with a blood test, the fear was that a gay HIV-positive male could infect a blood supply. Fine. However, as we have moved on in our knowledge, before you now donate blood, tests for HIV/AIDS are mandatory for ANYONE donating blood. This fact has led activists – and even The Red Cross – to argue that the
ban is clearly ‘medically and scientifically unwarranted’. If the ban was lifted, it is estimated it would add 200,000 pints of blood to the national supply. The fact that it hasn’t been lifted shows in my mind that the reason to keep it – if it is ‘medically and scientifically unwarranted’ – is simply due to the fact that perceptions towards gay men have not changed and that the social stigma of the fear of the 1980’s has not dissipated as much as we would like to think. Globally, when we talk about America, we mean Miami, New York, Boston, Seattle, LA, San Francisco, Washington D.C. and Fort Lauderdale to name but a few as meccas for the gay community, but those are just cities, they are not the majority of the USA. On the whole, however, these cities and others are, in effect, the parenthesis to the USA. The majority of the center and south is where the community still needs the proverbial makeover – where perceptions still need to be severely worked on to ensure that people see us as not only equal but, most importantly, not a threat. Whilst writing this and thinking about perception, I can’t help but notice that in the community we have a considerable ‘perception PR’ issue. We look at subsets of the community without equality and judge swiftly. The stylish are arrogant, the slovenly considered junkies, the skinny must be meth heads or diseased, the fat are lazy and so on and so forth – and that’s not even getting into the mine field of gays vs. lesbians or gays and lesbians vs. transgendered. It’s odd, really; we work to get others to accept us because we offer the image that the LGBT and even Q is a uniquely dynamic and unified community. If we turn around, sadly we would see that our true perceptions of ourselves are not exactly what we project. Maybe we need to change the perceptions we have of each other, the fact we still call fellow gay men ‘her’ or ‘she’ or ‘faggot’ surely can’t help the cause! Then, of course, we can’t forget the media, TV and movies have undoubtedly continued to lead people’s view of the gay community with their still stereotypical gay best friend, or the nympho or the lesbian who goes to Home Depot. On one hand, for comedic purposes one has to ask how harmful is it? Well,
Letters to the Editor In response to the Letter to the Editor, in the Florida Agenda, July 14th, 2011. DEAR EDITOR, I have just read the July 14 issue of the Florida Agenda and would like to respond to the letter from JP Colby. It has been estimated that we form our first, and often lasting, impression of a person within the first 7-30 seconds of meeting them and, whether JP Colby likes it or not, much of this impression will be derived from how we judge that person's appearance. Personally, just as Mr. Vaughn does, I make positive judgments about people who are dressed smartly and are neatly groomed, and negative judgments of people who appear to have thrown on the first semiclean clothing they found that morning – this may not be "right" but it is our right. Just as it is JP Colby's right to disagree with Mr. Vaughn's opinion.

Alex Vaughn to someone who is educated about the community, it’s not. But if you are still trying to show people equality and change the perception that not every gay man sounds like he is on helium, is bouncing from boyfriend to boyfriend and has a penchant for jazz hands, then perhaps those less stereotypical need to stand forward. Stereotypes come from somewhere and they do exist, but there is a great deal of people in the LGBT community who don’t fit the mold and, ironically, they can really help the cause of enhancing and clarifying others’ perceptions of the community as a whole. However, you would never know them – they aren’t at gay pride, or the bars, or circuit parties or clubs. They aren’t in malls working behind the perfume counters. They are the bankers, lawyers, waiters, tech guys and the like who have adapted into society without flair or scene, but are happy to have a life unburdened with the fight. In a way, that is what the fight is for: normality. To be left in peace and treated equally, yet they are perceived by their own community as hiding and ashamed. Maybe; maybe not. The fight goes on for equality and for the future, and that is necessary and will be a long one but, as individuals, you can check yourself. Before you let your perceptions of others lead you to judge and dismiss, remember someone is doing the same to you right now! H If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite. – William Blake

Would you arrive at a wedding in denim shorts and sneakers? Probably not, because it would be disrespectful to your hosts (unless you are in Israel, where this is perfectly acceptable). In the same way, arriving at a business meeting or going to a smart bar or restaurant in these types of clothes is also disrespectful. It suggests to the person/people you are meeting that you do not value them. Mr. Vaughn's article does not suggest that he believes that people who are not smartly dressed or groomed or wearing a color coordinated outfit are less than he is or not worthy of his time. He has merely stated that he feels better when he has made an effort and appreciates it when others do, too. Conversely, JP Colby's sarcasm laden letter implies a believed superiority over Mr. Vaughn due to JP Colby's assumption that because Mr. Vaughn cares about his and others' appearances he is superficial. Taking
pride in your appearance does not automatically mean you are superficial just as not caring about your appearance does not automatically mean you are intelligent. With reference to the comment about Scott Rothstein, the implication that anybody who takes pride in their appearance is not only superficial but also in some way involved in criminal activity, is both laughable and offensive. Considering JP Colby's letter is supposedly complaining about Mr. Vaughn being judgmental this seems to be incredibly prejudicial. Unlike JP Colby I look forward to reading Mr. Vaughn's future articles and opinions and should he write something that I disagree with I hope that I will have the respect and courtesy to inform him of my opinion in a polite manner as opposed to a sarcastic and condescending rant. Who Knew? Sexual Suicide – What’s Killing Your Sex Drive? By sam knew, msw
We’ve all seen the movie where, after a night of wild lovemaking, they each light up a cigarette and reflect on their hours of sexual bliss (bliss optional). But believe it or not, with each drag you may be committing sexual suicide. Along with smoking there are a number of things men do to decrease or kill their own sex drive. Smoking, by far, may be one of the most common. One issue is all those toxins that build up in your system, which contributes to a lethargic feeling (that feeling of indifference and a loss in interest). This can occur after having just one cigarette. Smoking can also damage the blood vessels in the penis, which restricts blood flow, in
turn lowering the pressure of blood in the penis – making an erection more and more difficult. But giving up the habit may come at another cost to your libido. Food often becomes a replacement for many who are quitting smoking; usually it is related to an oral fixation (yes, it’s okay to giggle). But the danger of packing on those pounds is another mood killer, especially along the waistline. Fat around the abdomen absorbs testosterone more efficiently than any other fat cells in the body. Testosterone is a steroid hormone and the principle male sex hormone. As it diminishes, so does your sex drive. But the problem doesn’t always originate at or below the waist. Drugs such crystal meth at first can be a sexual magnifier, releasing 12 times the amount of dopamine (the pleasure chemical) to the brain. Eventually, however, the drug destroys the brain's pleasure receptors, making it increasingly impossible to experience any type of pleasure. Other less suspecting drugs can have mood alternating effects as well, such as some prostate and HIV medications, antidepressants, blood pressure pills, antipsychotics and even some cholesterol lowering medicines. And, of course, what you’re washing these possible mood killers down with can accelerate the effects on your body. Combining
these substances with alcohol can lead to additional – long term, and possible irreversible – damage. Alcohol alone, however, can also lead to sexual impotency. Though a glass or two may make you less inhibited, it also damages the nerves (including those in the penis), which leads to the inability to physically be aroused. Long-term alcohol abuse can make this a permanent effect. Avoiding most the aforementioned substances may prove to be a challenge for some, especially if they have acted as your social lubricant. Learning to deal with your emotional/social barriers could have a bigger pay off in the end. This includes how we cope with the everyday stressors in our lives. Sex and stress are definitely linked. Not only does stress contribute to a low sex drive physiologically, under stress the body releases cortisol (a hormone) which inhibits other hormones - such as testosterone. The good news is that it seems to work the other way around, as well. Sex can be a great stress reliever – but of course your first move may have to be on yourself. H

‘OP FACELIFT’ continued from COVER
The drive-through gourmet restaurant was still in the early planning stages when the project was scrubbed. However, new life was brought to Tokarcik’s dream was when he met with Gary Lanham of Real Estate Recovery, an Oakland Park real estate firm which has helped lead the way in redeveloping Oakland Park’s “Main Street,” which spans further north on North Dixie Highway from Oakland Park Boulevard to N.E. 38 Street. Tokarcik’s projects could be the anchors of the redevelopment of the west side of Dixie Highway in Oakland Park. “Oakland Park is a different city than Wilton Manors. Oakland Park is a huge city – downtown is 150 acres. It’s a huge amount of space and, working from the cultural point of view, you can create different main streets in different parts of Oakland Park and I think that by claiming this section as the gay center, you can create a lot of different things happening,” said Tokarcik. Tokarcik explained that when he graduated and got his degree from Harvard University, he worked in Harvard’s academic department as projects coordinator. There he coordinated projects between architecture, urban design, city planning and landscape architecture. That’s where he realized how things are so interrelated and that, by efficiently coordinating everything together, a city could be picked up cheaper and faster than by any other means. “In Oakland Park, you have to look at sites very differently,” said Tokarcik. “You have to see what works and one of the worst problems is you have a main street section which is not only divided by a highway but also railroad tracks. But what you have to benefit from is a huge amount of space. If it’s properly designed and properly managed by getting the proper mix of things here, we can have a real destination spot to bring people to the downtown area. That’s the real beauty of it.” Tokarcik explained that a lot of demolition of existing buildings on the west side of Dixie Highway is unnecessary. “I kind of like these commercial/industrialtype block buildings,” he said, “because you can actually provide them with artistic-type endeavors inexpensively and they’re big. A lot of them have loading docks and parking. It really makes sense to work with the existing fabric when you can and just develop the character from that.” Tokarcik said he thinks Oakland Park has the ability to grow beyond what Wilton Manors has already done for the gay community – just expand upon it in a different way. He says he doesn’t want to repeat what has already been done in Wilton Manors. “I’ve met many people that want more than what’s here now. They don’t know exactly ‘that’ is, but people have voiced to me that something’s missing. That’s why an arts and cultural center of town, just places that really work and keeping it inexpensive – and not over building. I always thought Oakland Park would be the next big place.” H

‘PENIS STUDY’ continued from COVER
enjoyed more satisfaction with their lifestyle. Though it's difficult to trace exactly how much federal funding went to the project, the study was one of many linked to an $899,769 grant in 2006. The grant was administered by NIH's National Institute on Drug Abuse, and went first to a group called Public Health Solutions and a researcher with the National Development and Research Institutes before going to individual researchers. Those researchers then compiled data from a survey of more than 1,000 gay and bisexual men at events in New York City for the gay community. "This country is broke and we cannot spend money on this kind of stuff," said Andrea Lafferty, president of the Traditional Values Coalition, which drew attention to the report as part of a sixmonth investigation into NIH grants for examples of "institutional waste." Lafferty added that the study was “wacky”. The organization originally stated that the study cost $9.4m to conduct, a claim that has since been discredited. But one of the researchers involved with the report told FoxNews.com that NIH funding was only used to help "analyze and write up" data that had already been collected without the use of taxpayer funds. "The data were not collected using taxpayer funds," Jeffrey Parsons, a professor with Hunter College, said in an email. "NIH funds were not used to measure any-

one's penis size." "This study was funded by the Hunter College Center for HIV/AIDS Education Studies and Training," the National Institutes of Health said. "Dr. Christian Grov was supported as a postdoctoral research fellow at the time the research was conducted by a National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)-funded training grant." Parsons took issue with Lafferty's description of the grant. A Traditional Values Coalition release stated that at least $9.4 million went to a 10-year study that included the penis-size research -- but Parsons said it appears that references a much broader "post-doctoral training program" of which the penis-study funding was a "small" part. Other studies stemming from the same 2006 grant examined topics ranging from the drug market in Houston following Hurricane Katrina to the connection between contraceptives and STD prevention in Madagascar. "To suggest that 9.4 million dollars was spent to study penis sizes is factually inaccurate and simply designed to create news," Parsons wrote. The original survey had a relatively high response rate -- with 83 percent of those approached agreeing to participate. "As an incentive, those who completed the survey were given a voucher for free admission to a movie," the study said. Lafferty's group drew attention to several other studies Monday that it claimed were "bizarre" in the current fiscal climate. Among them was one that asked
individuals to "mail in their toenails" to measure "toenail nicotine," according to the values coalition. "The president has said he's going to hunt down waste. Well, I'm going to give it to him on a platter," Lafferty said. According to Lafferty, ”We’ve got nameless, faceless bureaucrats who thought this was a good use of taxpayer money,” while adding, ”[They] seem to think the American taxpayers are a limitless ATM machine.” H NEWS continued from Page 10

NYC to Hold Marriage Lottery NEW YORK CITY, NY – Fearing an onslaught of applications for marriage licenses this Sunday, July 24, the first day gays can legally get wed in that state, the City Clerk’s Office has announced a lottery for weddings on that first day. The Wall Street Journal has announced that the lottery will guarantee that a total of 764 couples, either opposite or same sex, will have access to get their licenses at any of the five Clerk Offices throughout the city. The city is afraid that without limitations, people might be stuck standing in long lines all day.

Despite limiting the issuance of the number of licenses to be issued that day, it would still be the largest number of marriages ever issued in one day. As of last Tuesday morning, the City Clerk’s Office had received 2,661 online applications since July 5th; the Clerk has estimated that 1,728 are from same-sex couples. Officials said that, according to the applications, 54% planned to pick up their marriage licenses on Sunday, June 24th, and of those, 50% had planned to get married that same day. H

Cross-Eyed
Sideview Mirror • Part 2 By AJ CROSS
(The following is the second of a four part series which will run for four consecutive weeks) He told me he took care of some horses at a stable not far from where he found me, and that he was actually just headed home from work. He looked at me once while answering a question and I finally got to see his eyes. They were as I had suspected – stunning. They were deep blue with a burst of green and a hint of amber. His lips were full and so red. He was beautiful. He told me that he felt bad just dropping me off somewhere and offered to take me back to his place. He told me he would drive me back to my car when the rain stopped. Of course I could not decline his offer, so I said yes almost before he finished asking me. We drove a few more miles and then turned off the main road onto a dirt and stone road on which we drove for another ten minutes. We drove past a large field with trees and an old wooden fence that seemed to encase the entire field until I could see a small house. We pulled up to a house with a large porch that wrapped all the way around the side. The paint on the house, which was probably once pristine white, was now dark beige with chipped paint in many areas. He parked, then grabbed my bag and simply said “let’s go”. I got out and ran onto the wooden porch shaking my head like a dog in the rain. I could tell the house was old, as every step I took toward the door was followed by a creak in the wood panels of the porch. He opened the unlocked door and I followed him in. The room we entered was dark and he told me to give him a minute to get the lights, so I just stood by the door. A few minutes later the room began to glow and I could see the source of the light was a fire he had just started in the fireplace. I found the smell of the burning wood to be very unexpected and pleasant. As he turned to face me, I was frozen because he looked so good. It seemed like his denim jeans were airbrushed onto his strong thick thighs and his waistband sat just low enough that I could see what I could only refer to as Brad Pitt lines followed by intense 8 pack abs and incredibly muscular chest with the lightest mist of hair on it. I was
speechless to the point that he asked me if I was ok. It wasn’t until he repeated the question that I responded that I was fine. He told me to go sit by the fire and, as I did so he, came behind me and raised my arms up and pulled off my shirt. I did not expect him to get so close to me, let alone take my shirt off. I felt so inadequate when compared to him. I am lean and just a bit more than half his size, not nearly as muscular and I immediately crossed my arms over my chest as if to hide myself from him. He walked out of the room and my mind began to race, wondering how I ended up in his house. Why he looked the way he did and why, of all the people that could have stopped to help me, it was him. As he came back into the room he gave me a cup of hot tea and sat next to me on the small carpet near the fire which, by the way, felt incredible. He pulled off his cowboy boots and his socks and began to rub his feet. Even his feet were beautiful. I was surprised at how perfectly clean and pedicured they were. I asked him if he lived alone and he told me that the house was his grandmother’s and that she had just passed a little over a year ago and left it to him. His parents were still in Dallas, Texas, where he was from. He told me he liked the sense of isolation and tranquility that moving here had given him I began to relax a bit and simply leaned back and supported myself by placing my arms behind me on the floor. I was surprised at how nice he was and impressed by how knowledgeable he was about horses. We talked for a long while and then he stood up and walked to a window and looked back saying “well I guess the rain stopped”. A sense of disappointment came over me as the rain seemed to be the only thing justifying me remaining in his house and in his company. Just as I reached for my shirt, he told me that if I wanted I could just sleep there and leave in the morning since there was not much I would be able to do at 4 in the morning. I had a feeling this was leading somewhere, but I could never imagine what was to come. To be continued… H

Defense of Marriage Act: Morally Bankrupt and Closer to Filing Bankruptcy As first reported in this column four weeks ago (Open for Business, June 23, 2011: “Federal Court Judges: DOMA is Bankrupt”), the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California ruled last month that the 1996 federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) – the law barring federal recognition of same-sex marriage – is unconstitutional. The case in question involved a legally married samesex couple from California, Gene Douglas Balas and Carlos A. Morales, who wanted to file jointly for bankruptcy; their effort was challenged by federal officials who moved to dismiss their petition under DOMA. The decision by Judge Thomas B. Donovan stated: “In this court’s judgment, no legally married couple should be entitled to fewer bankruptcy rights than any other legally married couple.” In his ruling, the judge cited a February letter from U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, which read that, while the Obama administration would continue to enforce DOMA, it would no longer defend the law in court. “The Holder Letter demonstrates that DOMA cannot withstand heightened scrutiny,” the judge wrote in the decision. On July 8, the Justice Department confirmed that it will no longer contest joint bankruptcy filings from legally married gay couples. “The Department of Justice has informed bankruptcy courts that it will no longer seek dismissal of bankruptcy petitions filed jointly by same-sex debtors who are married under state law,” said Tracy Schmaler, Deputy Director of the Justice Department’s Office of Public Affairs. But I was smart and I was tough and made it out of that situation to earn a college scholarship. Once I got out, I really didn’t look back. I`ve had my hiccups like anyone else, but for the most part I was able to stay out of trouble and move on from a rough beginning. I actually talk a lot about my upbringing in my columns. Have you ever experienced bullying as a result of your sexuality? My stepfather was a bully but it wasn’t about my sexual orientation. I’ve been in work environments where I felt as if bigots were trying to marginalize me but I never felt as bullied as I did growing up. When you discover a passion for writing? Gosh, early, maybe 1st grade. I won poetry writing and playwriting contest in elementary school but didn’t find journalism until college. Who was your mentor in publishing? Who wasn’t? I turned to all of my professors in college for guidance outside of the classroom and then once I was a professional writer, watched the people whose work I admired most. Gary Bond, a longtime sportswriter for The Grand Rapids Press and Prentis Rogers from the Atlanta Journal Constitution were particularly important to me. Sadly both men passed away before they saw my career really take off. I grew up reading the Free Press’ Mitch Albom and Nathan McCall’s “Make Me Wanna Holler” is probably the reason why I write as honestly as I do. Please tell our readers about your incredible career? The steps you have taken to get to where you are.
You know, I’m not really sure how I got here myself really. I just always tried to be authentic and let my work speak for itself. I was blessed to have Mike Lloyd at The Grand Rapids Press take a chance on me out of grad school, but from there I was recruited by the Atlanta Journal and ESPN and CNN. There was a brief moment in which I chased, but when I returned to center and why I write in the first place, the other opportunities came. I also wrote for the South Bend Tribune and Kalamazoo Gazette. What has been the highlight of your career to date? Up until a few days ago, it was having beers with Kenny Chesney. but recently I was named Journalist of the year and that was really an emotional moment for me. I had worked so hard to be good and real and authentic and challenging, that being recognized by my peers was extremely gratifying. Any low points? It was late one night, I was on the police monitor, heard about a head-on collision that resulted in a fatality. I go out, talk to everyone, write the piece turned it in and the next morning when I woke I learned I had made a mistake and faulted the victim. It was gut wrenching to have done that to that family. My editor made me drive out and apologize face-to-face. They graciously accepted my apology but to this day, that hurts. It also taught me the importance of being right over being first. How do feel the gay community has changed over the years? We’re getting comfortable in our own skin meaning, it’s OK to be splintered on issues. The running joke of taking our gay card away if we don’t like Madonna or Cher has fallen by the wayside. That’s a byproduct of no longer being ghettoized. We’re openly gay in the suburbs with our families, or in church or visible in cities other than NYC and San Fran. We’ve also benefited from having straight people be our allies so that we can correct bigoted legislation. There’s more work to be done, of course. AIDS robbed us of a lot of mentors and institutional knowledge and our rural brothers and sisters are still in hiding for safety reasons. But no doubt about it, things are much better than when I came out in the 90s. What advantages do you feel there are within the gay community? There are no inherent advantages to being gay, I don't think. What disadvantages? Legal battles just to exist without fear of losing our jobs or paying extra taxes

LZ Granderson poses backstage with his award during the 20th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in 2009. or being physically assaulted for simply existing. Your career is extremely inspiring for many, but what inspires you and your writing? Truth. I just want to tell the truth. Do you feel you are a pioneer for gay journalists? I don't think about stuff like that.
How would you like to be remembered? As a good father, husband, positive contributor to society and someone who strived to find the beauty in humanity. H

Café Jamm Has It All Going On Comfort Food with Flair Every once in a while, you walk into a new restaurant and you just know that you are going to like it … no, I take that back: You are going to love it. That’s exactly what I felt upon my first visit to this new Fort Lauderdale dinner spot. The friendly greeting from Junko, the former owner of the highly successful Sushi Blues Café in downtown Hollywood, put me at ease and let me know she was glad I had chosen Café Jamm for dinner. Only open since April, this small but comfortable bistro seems to be doing just about everything right. Located in the same strip mall that houses Whole Foods, you have to search for it a bit. Once you walk in, however, you find yourself in a well-appointed, chic, hip room that is pretty without being pretentious. Hip, trendy lounge music plays in the background at a level that still allows comfortable conversation. A small bar at the rear of the restaurant was filled with the comfortable chatter of folks enjoying their wine selections and food. After being seated at a comfortable banquette along the wall, I selected a glass of Malbec while my partner opted for Pinot Noir. Wine selections at Café Jamm are very fairly priced both in by-the-glass and bottle options. I enjoyed the richness of my Malbec, as he pronounced his Pinot Noir the perfect summer red. Mari, who

just so happens to be Junko’s daughter, and whose smile can light up a room, soon presented us with homemade potato chips accompanied by a delectable dipping sauce. The chips, light and crunchy and not overly salty, are complimentary from the kitchen. That night also featured a cheese and honey bruschetta that was equally yummy. Perusing the menu, it became clear that Café Jamm is heavy on comfort food, albeit with a slight Asian flair on some of the offerings. A featured soup, carrot ginger, sounded delicious, so we started our meals with that. A beautiful bowl of orange, creamy delectability with a slight aroma of ginger had my mouth watering. The first spoonful had me hooked. This is a soup that allows the fresh flavors of the ingredients to shine through without being masked by too much salt. If you see it featured, be certain to order it. It is heavenly down to the last spoonful. A featured seafood entrée, pankoencrusted tilapia with a garlic-basil herb sauce, was my selection. Feeling carnivorous, my partner opted for grilled garlic marinated skirt steak. My fish arrived delightfully crispy on the exterior and tenderly moist on the interior. The accompanying sauce was a delicious addition to the fish, neither overpowering nor dominating the entrée. The skirt steak, ordered
Butternut Squash Velouté
Butternut squash (also known in Australia and New Zealand as Butternut pumpkin) is a type of winter squash. It has a sweet, nutty taste similar to that of a pumpkin. It has yellow skin and orange fleshy pulp. When ripe, it turns increasingly deep orange, and becomes sweeter and richer. It grows on a vine. The most popular variety, the Waltham Butternut, originated in Waltham, Massachusetts. It is a good source of fiber, vitamin C, manganese, magnesium and potassium. It is also an excellent source of vitamin A and vitamin E. This recipe is so easy you’ll laugh! • 1 (2 to 3 pound) butternut squash, peeled and seeded • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter or extra virgin olive oil
• 1 medium onion, chopped • 6 cups chicken stock • Nutmeg (a pinch) • Salt and freshly ground black pepper Cut squash into 1-inch chunks. In a large pot melt butter or olive oil. Add onion and cook until translucent, about 8 minutes. Add the squash and the stock. Bring to a simmer and cook until the squash is tender, about 15 to 20 minutes. Place in a blender and puree. Taste. Season with nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Remember ... You are the chef ! H

Sale of Schubert Resort & Orton Terrace Confirmed!
Properties on Fort Lauderdale Beach are being bought up by Swedish investors.
Pan Capital is a corporation of Swedish businessmen who have been gobbling up property on Fort Lauderdale Beach the way a thirsty dog laps up water. Hotelier Richard Gray, founder of the Royal Palms guest accommodations, is acting as spokesman for the group. He tells me that the Swedes feel the U.S. economy has bottomed out and property values are at their best in 20 years, thus the purchasing of Fort Lauderdale beach property at an unprecedented pace. Gray has confirmed Richard the purchase of the Gray Schubert Resort and Orton Terrace by Pan Capital. Both deals were consummated at the end of June. The Schubert, owned by real estate giant Tony Dee, was purchased for $1.7 million and Orton Terrace, owned by Roger Handevidt, was purchased for $ 1 million. Both purchases were cash deals. Over the last year or so, Pan Capital has purchased the Flamingo, the Dunes, Blue Dolphin, the Robbindale, the Royal Palms, Orton Terrace and Schubert Resorts. And that’s just for starters. The group has also purchased a large number
of straight properties. According to Gray, all of the gay accommodations purchased will remain catering to the gay traveler except the Blue Dolphin. Gray has also told The Scoop that North Fort Lauderdale Beach is being developed into an area that will be called North Beach Village, a quaint area of cafés and boutique motels and hotels. Orton Terrace will soon close and major renovations will get underway. The plan is to merge the Orton Terrace with the old Royal Palms into a hotel named the Hotel Lush Royale, an upscale hotel catering to the sophisticated gay traveler.

When Your Heart Grieves By MICHAEL FRENCH
None of us will be spared what can seem an overwhelmingly unbearable emotion – grief. The “Grim Reaper” has always been an equal opportunity heart breaker. He’s practiced diversity since the beginning of time. This hooded harvester of life picks who he wants, when he wants to, often with no warning. No matter what the circumstances we are not prepared for grief because we really don’t know how we will feel. We grieve from the passing of people we love, pets, or heroes, because they stood for positive change in our world. We grieve from a sense of betrayal, the loss of a relationship or employment. Grief is very personal. As insurmountable as it can feel, grief is actually a very necessary, healthy healing process. There are five commonly accepted stages of grief that most people go through following a serious loss: Denial &
Isolation, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance. Some become mired in one of the first four stages. Life can be very painful until they find the strength to move to the fifth – and the most elusive – stage: Acceptance. Denial comes from shock and disbelief. It’s imperative to not deny grief. Denial only adds to the emotional trauma, delays acceptance and, ultimately, recovery. Withdrawal is common during this phase. Try to keep your social contacts close. Anger may be directed at the person, living or deceased, who inflicted the pain we suffer. Anger can also be directed at him/herself for letting the event take place, even if realistically, nothing could have stopped it. Depression, natural during grief, but still an insidious happiness bandit, can leave one feeling numb, with anger and sadness lying under its veneer. Bargaining may be attempted with God, asking, “If I do this or don’t do that, will you take the pain away?” Acceptance takes the longest. It arrives when sadness and mourning have tapered off, and the reality of the loss’s finality has been acknowledged. During grief, conflicting emotions are common. Sorrow, loneliness, guilt, anxiety are companions of serious loss. Suppressing or denying these feelings thwart working through the stages of grief and places great stress on the body and mind.
Grief is extremely personal. Each person endures and survives grief in their own way. Barring physically or emotionally harmful behavior, like burying sorrow in drugs or alcohol, uncontrolled anger or succumbing to depression, there’s no right or wrong way to endure grief. Don’t give in to the pressure of other’s expectations of how you should grieve. Grief, especially for caregivers, can begin long before someone dies. When someone you love is going to die and you are given the luxurious privilege of choosing your last memory, seize it! It is a gift you will treasure for the rest of your life. I know this to be true from personal experience. We cannot stop grieving over those who are deceased. The only way to do that would be if they returned. Each of us learns at our own pace to continue living, keeping memories alive, taking strength from them and being grateful for the fond memories brought to your life by the person or pet. With time, grief becomes easier to bear. It will remain, becoming part of you, like wearing a ring or glasses, but you get used to it, and that’s a good thing. It’s “good” because it makes sure you never forget. Finally, don’t ever hold back tears. Tears have cleansing powers. They are more a symbol of strength than weakness. An open window to your heart,
tears, like a genuine smile, show emotional honesty. They universally convey strong emotion. Silently, they speak words we sometimes can’t even whisper. Tears, the water from our souls, quench a thirst to express our emotions. They flow from a well of sadness and, paradoxically, joy, too! Now go TELL, NOT TEXT, someone you love that you do! H Though nothing can bring back the hour of Splendor in the grass, of glory in the flower. We will grieve not, but rather find Strength in what remains behind. – From the movie: “Splendor in the Grass”

Rub Out Back Pain Train Those Abs! By TOM BONANTI Over 80% of all Americans will experience low-back pain at some point in their lifetime. Many of these people will miss work and incur sizeable medical expenses. If you have poor posture, sit most of the day and are overweight, you are definitely a candidate. A healthy, pain-free back is often something you take for granted until an injury occurs. You don’t have to be a trainer or sports doctor to realize that taking a few preventative measures each day can keep your back strong and healthy. Training your abdominal muscles regularly not only helps you achieve a six pack, it can also strengthen your low back. Weak abs are the root of many lower-back problems, ranging from acute spasms to chronic low-back pain. Flabby, out of shape abs force the lowback to work harder in a variety of strenuous and mundane activities, straining the supporting musculature and ligaments of the spine. Weak abs combined with excessive abdominal weight (a big gut!) can lead to an exaggerated lumbar lordotic curve (sway back). This, in turn, can cause postural problems while sitting, standing or
walking, increasing the chance of inflaming and irritating your nerves, discs and muscles. Weak abs, a big belly and sitting on your butt all day in front of a computer can trigger one hell of a bad backache. Unfortunately, this seems to have become the American way of life – and so has low back pain. On the flip side, toned abs, proper exercise and a low-fat diet can provide a healthy, rock-hard defense against 80% of all lower back ailments. The abdominal muscles are like other muscles in your body – you should train them hard and then allow them to rest and grow and strengthen outside the gym. Hitting abs hard three times a week is preferable to 100’s of sets of reps day in and day out. Leg lifts, straight leg situps and excessive twists are a prescription for a bad-ass backache. Crunches will isolate your abs better than anything else, because they tax your trunk flexors (rectus abdominis or “6 pack”) rather than your hip flexors (iliopsoas muscles or deep muscles in your pelvis). A proper crunch is performed flat on your back, knees bent and legs elevated
over a bench, sofa or exercise ball. Place your hands behind your head, but do not interlock your fingers. Cradle your neck and head as you crunch up, bringing your elbows to your knees. Do not pull up with your hands on the back of your head, as this will place undue strain on your seven cervical vertebrae. Do not roll up on your tail bone. Simply crunch bringing your elbows to the knees, pause and contract your gut muscles, and return to starting position. Variations of the crunch can effectively isolate, strengthen and build strong abdominals. The number of sets and reps you do depends on how much time you have and your endurance level. Both your abs and lower back muscles support your spine; treat these muscles as equals. An imbalance adds stress and strain on the supporting musculature of the spine. If you work your abs, make sure to stretch your lower back while you are down there with simple cat stretches or by bringing your knees up to your chest a few times. Make sure to work your lower back into your regular back routine. Remember, you can do crunches till the cows come home, but one trip

Sail Away
Charter brokers lead a new paradigm of 100% customized travel on the world’s greatest yachts. By PAUL RUBIO With modern jetsetters looking beyond commercial cruises and traditional resorts for their next upscale vacation, private yacht charters have upped the ante to provide the ultimate bespoke vacation. Professional yacht charter brokers like Ulla Gotfredsen of “Amazing Charters” (www.amazingcharters.com) function as maritime matchmakers, pairing clients with beautiful boats, seasoned crew and tailored agendas that suit their whims, tastes and personalities. Chartering a crewed yacht is like “creating your own floating luxury boutique hotel,” explains Ulla. The destinations, the cuisine, the drinks, the hospitality and the activities are all at clients’ discretion. Plus, amenities like flatscreen TVs, WiFi and iPod docking stations are identical to those in highend hotels. Ulla navigates us through some key tips for a floating vacation with endless opportunity.
Use a broker: Yacht charter brokers are like free personal shopping experts. Good brokers know the intricacies of the myriad of private yachts available – everything from crew personalities to the ages and styles of the boats
to the languages spoken by the polyglot captains (and crew). Best of all, the prices they provide are identical to those of direct bookings (which begin at $300/person/day).
Go all-inclusive: Clients can choose between bareboat and luxury crewed yacht charters. Like the name implies, bareboat charters provide the insured boat only and are recommended for experienced sailors. Luxury crewed charters, on the other hand, are an allinclusive package of boat, crew, unlimited food, drink and unabashed pampering. Pick a start and a finish: International boating hotspots like the British Virgin Islands and the Mediterranean tend to have the greatest selection of yachts for the start of a sojourn. That said, brokers easily arrange a crewed yacht to begin and end at almost any reasonable location around a desired destination(s).
Find a match: The key to a suc-

cessful charter experience is the perfect match between the clients and the boat/crew. Some yachts cater to romance, others to families. Some specialize in diving excursions. Others offer kiteboarding and watersport extravaganzas.
Set lofty goals: The best part of a personal charter is the ability to con-
trol your vacation. Price is based on the number of days and the yacht itself, not on the activities. Ulla encourages her Caribbean globetrotters to play golf in Anguilla, go shopping in St. Maarten and dine in St. Barth’s – all in the same day. Likewise, she advises her Mediterranean jetsetters to enjoy morning croissants in France and dinner in Italy. And that’s only on day one! H

The Summer Luxe Life!
Line Your Closet with Linen By ALEX VAUGHN It is HOT! There is no question the heat is on, so how can we stay stylish and cool? Well, there really is only one perfect summer fabric: Linen Linen is a textile made from the fibers of the flax plant, Linum usitatissimum. Linen is labor-intensive to manufacture, but when it is made into garments, it is valued for its exceptional coolness and freshness in hot weather. Linen is great because it really is effortless. If it is a bit creased, that isn’t an issue as the island feel is not about perfectly pressed clothes! It’s also perfect for travelling, because you can just roll up your shirt or shorts and shove them in a bag and be pool glamour ready instantly! Color wise, I think white is the best, but it’s almost the most impractical, so opt for beige, teal or navy. If you are daring, many designers from the Banana to Ralph Lauren offer a linen range in vibrant colors such as orange, turquoise and pink! Here’s the thing about linen pants: you can wear them whenever you want. They’re comfortable in either warm or cool conditions, so you can wear them around the house, to the beach or you can wear them out to dinner. Classic linen pants are good summer
pants because they’re light and great to wear to the beach, but also can hold up into the evening and night. You can wear them with a tee shirt to make them more casual and relaxed or you can put on a collared shirt to dress it up. Linen shorts are more relaxed – and yet smarter than the ever-popular cargo or plaid variety. As for linen shirts, it’s always best to get a relaxed fit, because it leaves room to breathe and for the wind to pick up some of the fabric! When choosing a suit, there are two basic options: Fitted and structured linen or loose. If you are attending a wedding or function that isn’t on a beach, then go for the structured like the one I selected from Nirvana and jazz it up with some bright accessories. For all else, go for the looser option as it offers more variety. The other advantage of having a linen suit in the summer is you can wear the pieces separately, but be careful cleaning them though or you could end up with different color pants and jacket (particularly if you have a dark hue of linen)! FILM
The End of Harry Potter
FLORIDAAGENDA.COM
A young & cute Harry Potter.
Why Should the GLBT Community Care? A Film Review by WARREN DAY By any standard, it’s one of the biggest phenomena in publishing and movie history. Over 450 million books have been sold, with the last four consecutively setting records as the fastest-selling books in history. It’s also the most successful movie franchise ever (six of the 20 biggest grossing films), taking in more money for the first seven films than James Bond has earned in 22. And what other movie series has an entire theme park devoted to it? Now, the eighth and last Harry Potter movie has come out (“Deathly Hallows Part II”), breaking national and world records and bringing the story to its final conclusion. But why should this be of any particular interest to the GLBT community? The truth is that Harry Potter has always held a major fascination for gays, so the better question might be, why? In essence, many gays have seen a correlation in what they had to face growing up and what Harry experienced. The family that’s raising him do not accept who he is, and pressure him to act more like a “normal” boy. He has feelings and thoughts that make no sense until he realizes that he was born that way. He’s drawn to and makes his closest friends with those who share his orientation. He has to be careful in letting others know about his true nature and often has to pretend he’s like the big majority of young people. Because his family rejects him, he’s had to build a family unit of his own with friends and mentors. I could keep going, but with

that brief list maybe it’s no wonder gays have been drawn to Harry Potter. And since gays are human beings, too (Yes, Michelle Bachmann’s husband, that is true!), we also identify with the usual growing pains – the anxiety in going to a new school, being bullied by kids with a cruel streak, forming a meaningful relationship with a teacher, the first awakenings of sexual attraction, et cetera, et cetera, until we reach what’s dubiously called ‘maturity’. So gays have many reasons and many connection points to care about the Harry Potter saga, but does the last film live up to its hype? Is it not only worth watching, but also worth getting excited about? The answer will depend greatly on how involved you’ve been with the story and characters, because to only see the last film would be like wandering into “Citizen Kane” for the final ten minutes and wondering, “What’s all this fuss about a sleigh?” On the other extreme, if you’ve been a 24/7 Potterhead, you may feel let down that the movie doesn’t live up to the one you’ve had in your head. For those in-between, “Deathly Hallows Part II” will deliver a kind of catharsis, where you see seven-year storylines reach a conclusion, and witness some surprising (and heart-rendering) developments with characters we’ve come to know so well, the kind of satisfaction you have at the end of a long novel or mini-series, but which you don’t get from a single film. What’s truly unique about these eight
movies is that we’ve seen these fictional characters (and real actors) grow up in actual time, going from 11 to 21, and that adds a rare resonance to our viewing. Daniel Radcliffe has developed into an excellent and versatile actor, something the producers had no guarantee of in 2000 when he was cast. Emma Watson has physically A more mature Harry Potter. changed the most, growing into a beautiful and confident woman. Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley is the weak link in both his acting and in how he was scripted. He was better in the first two films than he’s been in the latter ones, where he often looked like someone who had no idea why he was there. What’s truly enjoyable is to see a Who’s Who of British acting royalty in showy roles that were probably more amusing (and more lucrative) than their usual acting assignments. Some of them have been given rewarding moments for their last should’ve been longer. What is certain is that it isn’t worth appearance at Hogwarts (i.e., Maggie the extra money and inconvenience to Smith, Julie Walters, Alan Rickman). “Deathly Hallows Part II” has received see in 3D. The glasses make a dark film overwhelmingly positive reviews, but I even darker, like you’re seeing it through found it a little disappointing. Some of a tinted car window. So, after 19 hours and 58 minutes, after the scenes worked much better on the page than they did on the screen (Were 11 years in the making, the Harry Potter they too faithful to the book?), others films come to an end, and the fact that seem too rushed or condensed, and there millions will genuinely care is proof that are several that are downright confus- at least movie magic is real, and can cast ing, even for those of us who’ve seen all a spell on people of all ages and orientathe movies and read most of the books. tions. H It’s the one Harry Potter film that
Harry Potter fans, young and old, will all be sorry to see the series end. However, J.K. Rowling has not said this is “The End”... What’s next?

Being Eccentric Is Not a Comedy Guarantee “Stuff” Playing at The Caldwell Theatre A Stage Review by WARREN DAY There’s a long and cherished tradition in the American theater to base comedies around one or more eccentrics, going from “You Can’t Take It With You,” to “Auntie Mame,” to even big musicals like “Hello Dolly” and “The Producers,” to current productions like “The Addams Family.” Yet, not every eccentric makes for a satisfying comedy, as is the case with the Caldwell Theatre’s world premiere production of “Stuff ” by Michael McKeever. Based on a true story, it concerns two brothers named Homer and Langley Collyer who lived, if you can call it that, from the Gilded Age of the late-19th century until the mid-20th. In 1909, along with their doctor father and ex-opera singer mother, they moved into a large brownstone in what was then fashionable Harlem. The father abandoned the family in 1916 and, over the next 28 years, the brothers descended from eccentricity into madness. They became the stuff of legend, living as hermits, filling the multi-rooms of their mansion with everything from the chassis of an old Model T to fourteen pianos (both grand and
upright) and thousands of newspapers. Eventually, the living space in this four-story townhouse was reduced to a few square feet as they lived out their lives without electricity or heat, and with only narrow tunnels through the junk to get them from one packed room to another. It’s a story that has fascinated many writers including, not surprisingly, Stephen King, as well as E.L. Doctorow, the prize-winning author of “Ragtime.” In the two acts of “Stuff,” the playwright has picked but two nights out of their lives, one in 1929 when their mother was still alive, and then in 1947 when literally their lives, and their junk, were crashing around them. And that’s a central problem: There’s no gradation of development, because you go from when the hoarding was manageable to when it was chaotic insanity. The play starts at a sad place and jolts toward a much sadder one. The playwright offers no penetrating insight into why the brothers were the way they were, instead pulling out the old chestnut of the domineering mother (the fallback cause in many a play and novel
as to why someone was an unhappy homosexual). For over two hours, the brothers bicker and sling insults at each other and, while the audience laughed a good deal, it’s hard to make a consequential evening at the theater of two inconsequential people who did nothing consequential with their lives. You end up with the uncomfortable feeling of being asked to laugh at two people who were mentally ill. The play itself may be lacking, but as usual for the wonderful and adventuresome Caldwell Theatre Company, the direction by Clive Cholerton is top notch, the set by Tim Bennett is outstanding, and the acting is at a highly professional level, with the playwright Michel McKeever giving a fine performance as Homer.
