The announcement last week that Congressman Allen West will be speaking in front of the Wilton Manors Business Association deeply divided the residents and businesses in the city. So deeply, in fact, that earlier this week, the Congressman was disinvited by the board of WMBA. West, who represents Wilton Manors east of Dixie Highway in the U.S. House of Representatives, was scheduled to speak at a meeting of the Wilton Manors Business Association (WMBA) on August 8 at the community center at Hagen Park in Wilton Manors. Many in the gay community were upset that West was invited to speak at a WMBA meeting considering West’s attitudes towards the gay community. West, a Republican, has been an outspoken critic of the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” which allows gays to openly serve in the U.S. military. West has also taken a stance against other pro-gay issues. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a Democrat, represents the city of Wilton Manors west of Dixie Highway and has been a favorite of the LGBT communi-
ty for many years. A very small area of western Wilton Manors is represented by Congressman Alcee Hastings, who is also a Democrat. The gay community has split as to whether or not West should be speaking at a WMBA meeting considering his stance on gay issues, while some believe it’s a matter of West’s freedom of Activist Stuart Milk and Attorney Miriam Richter speech. Demolition of Skating Rink Catches Community Off-Guard By JAMES MICHAELS A local gay tradition that predates the Stonewall Revolution will come to an abrupt and unexpected end on Tuesday, August 9, for the last Tuesday Gay Skate night at the Gold Coast Roller Rink on South Federal Highway near the Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport. The rink itself will close on August 14 and shortly after that, the building will be demolished. The rink was originally opened in 1947. Back then, boys had to wear jackets and girls had to wear dresses in order to skate. Admission at that time was 25-cents, skate rentals were 10-cents and a hot dog would cost a nickel. Everybody was welcome to the rink; even African-

Americans skated right next to their white brothers and sisters during the turbulent civil rights era of the ‘60s, which was rare in the United States, especially in the deep-south. The Gold Coast Roller Rink is one of the oldest surviving busi-

Aqua Foundation for Women Awards Scholarships MIAMI, FL – The Aqua Foundation for Women awarded twelve women with scholarships, recognizing their academic success and commitment to giving back to the community. Recipients of the scholarships came from Broward, Miami-Dade and, for the first time, Palm Beach County. handing out hand drawn photocopied flyers. Admission was by invitation only and you had to be known by somebody who already attended the Tuesday gettogethers – it was considered a safe place to come and meet people. Management didn’t want just anybody walking in, so there was a sign on the door announcing that the rink was closed for a private party. When the rink was sold in the late 1990s, it was sold with the understanding that the new owners would keep the Gay Skate tradition going.
Ryan Conley, a promoter and volunteer who started as a deejay at the Tuesday Gay Skate in 1998 was only given a week-and-a-half notice of the closing of the rink. Conley explained that Gay Skate generally now attracts between 10 to 15 skaters on a typical Tuesday; however, depending on the time of year, the promotion and the deejay playing that night, attendance could be as high as 100. “We used to get 300 to 400 people on a Tuesday night,” said Conley, “but that was pre-Gay.com, Adam4Adam and Manhunt days. Now, there’s not that much of a need to go out and meet faceto-face when you can click, chat, drive and well – you can use your imagination.” Several years ago, a cross-promotion called “Intoxiskate” was combined with the Tuesday Gay Skate. The Tuesday party, created by a private promoter, was for the gay-friendly community who would not necessarily want to attend a “gay night” but would attend an alternative lifestyle gay-friendly night. Conley said that the Gold Coast Roller Rink was only closed on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve or when a hurricane threatened the area. However, Gold Coast was closed for a few weeks for remodeling years ago when the new owners took over the property. Also affected by the closing of the Gold Coast Roller Rink are the 75 members of the Gold Coast Derby Grrls roller derby team, whose home rink is the Gold Coast. “None,” exclaimed Rich DeRosa, one of the coaches for the Gold Coast Derby Grrls when asked how much advanced notice the team had concerning the closing of the skating rink. “There is a very, very good chance that we will go to the regional playoffs. It has never been done so fast before. We are the first team to become an official team and six months later make the international playoffs. And in the week of finding out we are in the running, we also find out we are losing the skating rink, so it’s been bedlam ‘GAY SKATE’ continues on Page 9

Christian Rocker to Sue Rachel Maddow for $50M NEW YORK, NY – You Can Run But You Cannot Hide International, Inc., a foundation dedicated to restoring morality and values in the nation’s youth, has announced they will sue MSNBC, Rachel Maddow and others who defamed its founder, Bradlee Dean. The foundation is suing for $50-million, though they say “money is not the issue,” claiming Maddow made false accusations over remarks about homosexuals and Sharia Law which he says were misrepresented by Maddow. Bradlee Dean, a renowned hard metal rocker who came to Christ after suffering a hard life as a young boy, has dedicated his life to this mission, a mission that has been under attack by liberal media since its inception. In a press release, Dean’s attorney wrote: “In the course of his ministry, Dean once made a statement on radio criticizing his fellow Christians for not taking a stronger stand about the gay rights lobby promoting homosexuality in the schools. He made a strong reference to Muslims taking the issue more seriously in the context of Shariah law, but did not condone their practices. It was Bradlee's intent to focus attention on the issue, not to advocate harm to anyone. Despite the very clear disclaimer by Bradlee Dean on his ministries website and elsewhere regarding the false accusation that he was calling for the execution of homosexuals, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow and others seized on and accused Dean on her show of supporting
the killing of homosexuals, as is the practice in some radical Islamic countries. This seriously has harmed Dean and the ministry, who pride themselves on respect and love for all people.” The other part of the press release explains that Dean is taking this action because he is a Michele Bachmann ally and Maddow and the left wing are out to bring her down. Italy Rejects Anti-Homophobia Bill
Malawi's LGBT Advocates Threatened with Arrest
ROME, ITALY – By a vote of 293 to 250, Italy’s parliament has rejected a bill to protect lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people from discrimination. Italy already bans discrimination on the grounds of race, religion, ethnicity and nationality, but activists say rising numbers of homophobic attacks means LGBT people need more protection. Gay rights activists have called on the European Union to step in. H
LILONGWE, MALAWI – Two of Malawi’s leading LGBT rights advocates are in hiding after being threatened with arrest for treason. Malawi is a small republic located in the middle of Africa. According to LGBT Asylum News, the two leaders, Undule Mwakasungula, Human Rights Consultative Committee chairperson, and executive director of Centre for Development of People, Gift Trapence, are the strongest advocates for LGBT human rights in Malawi and have long been targeted by the government. The government has blamed withdrawals of foreign aid on them personally. H
HRC Announces Equality Bus Tour WASHINGTON, D.C. – “On the Road to Equality” is the Human Rights Campaign’s nationwide bus tour to spread the message of equality by educating the American public and empowering lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people to become advocates for themselves and their families. The 12-week tour will travel to 17 cities in 11 states and the District of Columbia, with particular emphasis on the Midwest and south where there are limited legal protections for LGBT people and living openly and honestly can be difficult. The tour comes as a new nationwide poll from HRC finds that Americans widely support LGBT equality issues, but more work remains to be done. HRC’s new poll, conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research, shows support for equal marriage at 51 percent (43 percent in the Midwest and south), in line with other national polls on the issue. Support for non-discrimination protections for LGBT people in employment, housing and public accommodations is strong nationally at 79 percent, as is support for protections against bullying in schools at 73 percent. Respondents also overwhelmingly say anti-gay discrimination is a problem (79 percent) and anti-transgender discrimination is a problem (74 percent). The tour plans to make stops at Salt Lake City, Utah, Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska, Lawrence, Kansas, Kansas City, Missouri, New Orleans, Louisiana, Austin and College Station, Texas, Little Rock, Arkansas, Louisville and Lexington, Kentucky, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Georgia, Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Jacksonville and Orlando, Florida. Judge Strikes AntiCircumcision Initiative from Ballot SAN FRANCISCO, CA – A judge in San Francisco has struck down a proposed anti-circumcision ban from the city’s November ballot. Proponents of the ban argued that circumcision was not a medical procedure and that the ballot measure included an exception in cases where circumcision was needed for health reasons. They also compared the procedure to female circumcision, which is regulated and argued that the ballot measure would protect boys the same way. Both Jewish and Muslim religious groups filed a suit claiming the initiative violated a state law that bars local governments from regulating health care professionals. After hearing oral arguments, San Francisco Superior Court Judge Loretta Giorgi struck the measure off the ballot claiming the measure attempted to regulate a medical procedure. H
India’s First Married Lesbian Couple Require Protection GURGAON, INDIA – India's first married lesbian couple has been given police protection and moved to a safe house fearing the two women would be targeted in an “honor” killing. Savita, a 25-year old student at Choudhary Charan Singh University and her 20-year old wife Veena were married by a court in Haryana, close to New Delhi, earlier this month. Savita had been forced to marry a man against her will earlier this year and left her husband just five months after her forced marriage. The court granted her a divorce and gave its approval for her to marry Veena. In the court ceremony on

July 22, Savita was designated “husband” and Veena “wife” in India's first lesbian marriage. The couple later returned to court after receiving threats from friends and relatives in their village. Their lawyer said the court had served notice on 14 of Veena's relatives and villagers who had threatened them with “dire consequences”. The Deputy Commissioner of Police said that the couple has been shifted to a safe house and have been provided enough security. H
Durban Declared South Africa’s Gayest City DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA – Durban has declared itself the “gayest” city in the county, according to the Durban Lesbian and Gay Community Health Center. The Center contends that, compared with other big cities such as Johannesburg and Cape Town, Durban was the most accommodating towards the LGBT community and that Durban has the smallest number of reported hate crimes. H
Gay Man Faked Hate Crime IOWA CITY, IA – Police have charged an Iowa City man, who had reported he may have been the victim of a hate crime, with filing a false report. According to The Daily Iowan, Ryan Grant Watson, 30, was charged with providing a false report to law enforcement, a serious misdemeanor. Watson, a University of Iowa graduate student, had told police he was assaulted June 11. A press release said that Watson told police he was assaulted by a black male in an alley early in the morning. Watson said the man hit him in the face, causing him to fall back against the wall, sustaining cuts to his face, knee and ankle. Watson also said the attacker yelled a gay slur at him. The complaint detailing Watson's charge said the report was then forwarded to investigations for followup, during which police said they began to question its validity. Police also said Watson had led several people to believe he had been assaulted, requiring surgery and hospitalization and also stated the offense may have been a hate crime after the alleged incident. The complaint said further investigation and interviews with Watson made it clear the offense reported did not take place and the complaint said Watson eventually confessed the report was false. He then allegedly told officers he was still intoxicated when walking in the alley and he fell and hurt himself. H

tion targeting a lesbian because she did not conform to the stereotypes of how a woman should look. According to a press release from Lambda Legal, the organization filed a discrimination lawsuit in Queens County Supreme Court against the Sizzler Restaurant in Forest Hills, Queens, on behalf of Liza Friedlander, who was violently attacked while trying to dine with friends at her favorite breakfast spot. The press release said that on September 18, 2010, Liza Friedlander and two friends went to a Sizzler restaurant in Forest Hills, Queens, for the breakfast buffet. After paying, Friedlander served herself from the buffet. As Friedlander was walking back toward her table to join her companions, a Sizzler manager aggressively approached her. Allegedly, in front of other restaurant patrons, the manager began yelling at Friedlander, accusing her of not paying for the breakfast buffet. He violently shoved Friedlander in the chest, causing her to fall backward, and kicked her in the legs while yelling for her to get out of the Sizzler and calling her a “fucking dyke”. Lambda Legal said that the Sizzler dining room quickly devolved into a threatening scene when patrons began terrorizing Ms. Friedlander, with Sizzler patrons screaming at her, spewing homophobic and hate-filled epithets. A male diner began yelling at Friedlander, calling her a “he-she freak” and demanding that she leave the restaurant. Another man threatened to take Ms. Friedlander outside and sexually assault her, threatening that he would show her “what a dick is”. The man then threw objects at Friedlander. Finally, after police arrived, a battered Friedlander was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. This case is the first test of the newly enacted bias crime law passed in August, 2010, to hold individuals accountable for anti-LGBT violence and intimidation. H
Bachmann to Speak at Anti-Gay Group Dinner ORLANDO, FL – The Florida Family Policy Council has invited Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann to headline its annual policy awards dinner. According to Think Progress, the FFPC raises hundreds of thousands of dollars every year to oppose abortion rights, “the gay agenda,” and Islam. In 2008, they successfully led the charge to ban same-sex marriage and civil unions in Florida’s state constitution. H
25% of Gay Teens in Massachusetts are Homeless BOSTON, MA – According to GLAAD, a new study by Children’s Hospital Boston looks at the incidence of homelessness among high school youth in Massachusetts and finds a distinct disparity among youth who are homeless. The study, which finds that roughly 1 in 4

lesbian and gay teens and 15 percent of bisexual teens are homeless, compared to 3% of exclusively heterosexual teens, is the first of its kind to look at population based data. Children’s Hospital Boston quotes Heather Corliss, the study’s author saying, “Prior studies in homeless street youth have found that sexual minorities occur in much higher numbers than we’d expect based on their numbers in the community in general. This study looked at the magnitude of the difference for the first time.” Other research shows that higher rates of homelessness among LGBT youth can be attributed to family conflict over their sexual orientation, emotional and physical abuse, and higher rates of substance abuse. While we have known for a while that gay and lesbian youth make up a disproportionally high number of homeless youth, now we have data to show that gay and bisexual youth are much more likely than their straight peers to experience homelessness. Cuba to Consider Marriage Equality HAVANA, CUBA – According to CNN, Cuban authorities are considering legislation legalizing same-sex civil unions. The announcement was made by Mariela Castro, daughter of Raul Castro and the director of Cuba’s national sex education center, during an interview with Spanish broadcaster Cadena Ser earlier this month. Castro, the island’s leading gay rights advocate, said Cuban authorities are already studying the proposal in preparation for the upcoming Community Party conference in January 2012. issues,” Ellich told a group of WMBA members during a pre-planned lunch at Humpy’s Pizza. “I don’t always agree with what he says either, but he is our Congressman and represents a section of Wilton Manors and he wants to speak before us. Maybe I’m naïve in thinking that we can all come together and he would be well-received. I had no idea this was going to happen.” Also caught off-guard was the Wilton Manors City Commission. In a written statement, the Commission said “[They] would like to make clear that while they do not support Congressman West’s positions on equality for the GLBT community, the city is against the threatened action to call for a boycott of local businesses.” The statement was issued by Wilton Manors City Manager Joe Gallegos. In the past, Ellich has volunteered her time helping out at gay-sponsored events in the city, such as the Stonewall Festival and Wicked Manors. “I’m obviously a friend of the gay community and have been for years,” said Ellich at the Humpy’s gathering. “Everybody who knows me knows that I’ve worked on gay campaigns. To me, it’s not a gay/straight issue; it is a matter of happenstance.” Now she is worried about her safety. “I do feel bullied right now. Maybe that’s how the gay community has felt in the past, I don’t know. But I’ve been bullied, I’ve been threatened, I’m holding back tears, I’m trying not to get upset, trying to hold it together,” she said. Some members of the gay business community are also stunned by the reaction, saying that it’s simply a matter of West practicing his right to free speech, while others have either already quit WMBA or are considering doing so. Steve Dejong, owner of Humpy’s Pizza which hosted the recent WMBA lunch meeting, said that the lunch date was set long before the West controversy sprung up. He said that when West’s appearance was made public just the day before the WMBA lunch, he wasn’t sure that if there was going to be demonstrators in front of his restaurant. He was hoping that, during the lunch, Ellich would announce that West had cancelled or that the organization uninvited him. Ellich closed her talk in front of the WMBA members with: “I don’t want to hurt the association and, at this point, the congressman still wants to speak before the group. His chief of staff wants to make sure it’s just the association; he didn’t anticipate this being a giant circus for the Wilton Manors’ residents. He wanted it to be a business association meeting. That’s one of the things he works with is small businesses in his district. He wants questions about the debt, the economy and other business issues.” “It wasn’t meant to do any harm, and I say that from my heart; that’s all I can say to you guys. I didn’t mean for anybody to be harmed, and I’m sorry if I did. The board has not made any decision to cancel this or disinvite this man. But he is a Congressman, he does want to speak and, at this point, that’s where it stands.”

However, over the weekend the furor of West’s scheduled appearance blossomed into almost a revolt between the two sides of the issue and, on Monday morning, Ellich cancelled the planned August 8th meeting fearing, hostilities over the possibility of demonstrating groups: those opposed to West’s appearance and those who favor his appearance. Later on Monday, West’s office released a letter thanking WMBA for the invitation to speak and expressing his disappointment in the meeting’s cancellation. “As I stated in my letter dated July 27, 2011,” wrote West, “as a member of the House Small Business Committee, I was looking forward to meeting with business owners to discuss issues such as access to capital, the national debt and the economy, as well as hearing directly from them on their concerns operating a business in South Florida.” “Once again,” he ended his letter, “I am disappointed I will not be able to speak in front of the Wilton Manors Business Association; however, I will always standby to provide any assistance to all small business owners in Wilton Manors and to all constituents of the 22nd Congressional District.” Later Monday evening, a group of concerned citizens formed The Coalition for Equality and Fairness to better help educate the general community on LGBT issues. They released the following statement: “A non-partisan group of community and business leaders was formed today, entitled 'The Coalition for Equality and Fairness (CEF)', to create an organization designed to protect citizenship diversity and inhibit public officials from bullying the LGBT community in order to advance their own political and personal agendas. “The first order of business for the CEF will be to conduct an open and public educational rally next Monday, August 8, at 6 p.m., in Wilton Manors, entitled 'Allen West: In His Own Words'. Our purpose is not to censor anyone; it is to censure those who attempt to abuse us. “The Coalition will be issuing a mission statement on Wednesday evening defining and articulating its purpose and objectives, at which time the venue for the community rally and gathering will also be announced. “To participate in the rally or the initial organizing efforts of the CEF, please send an expression of interest to norm@normkent.com, coordinating outreach at the present time.” At press time, there was no further information concerning the planned August 8th rally. for the last week and a half.” “Carnivorous Licks,” a team member of the Gold Coast Derby Grrls and their public relations director, said that the team first found out about the closing of the roller rink from a posting on Facebook. “Then we were given a notice of evacuation that we have to be out by August 13th,” said Licks. “And we’re going to go skate at Holiday Park or places like that and do the best we can to find maybe a warehouse to skate at. The sad part is our entire history has been there and we don’t have that now.” The team will also be skating at the War Memorial Auditorium and up in West Palm Beach.
The Gold Coast Derby Grrls Licks said that they’ve participated in Intoxiskate and Gay Skate and that it will be strange that those won’t be around anymore since they, along with the Gold Coast Skating Rink, were such a huge part of the LGBT community. “Even though this is a tough time for us,” said Licks. “We’ve been through worse. So we’ll just have to tough it out and if, we have to travel an hour to skate, we’ll travel an hour to skate. If we have to skate outside, we’ll skate outside. We’ll just have to work a little harder to achieve what we want. Even though there’s a few bumps in the road right now, we have a lot of huge things ahead for us. We’ll be fine.” H

Angels in S. Florida By CLIFF DUNN Playwright Tony Kushner’s award-winning “Angels in America” is coming to Andrews Living Arts (ALA) in Fort Lauderdale for a four-week run. The play, set in New York City during the mid-1980s, follows the interconnected lives of several people affected by the AIDS crisis, including former Nixon and Reagan advisor Roy Cohn, who died in 1986 claiming to the very end that he was suffering from liver cancer. ALA producer and “Angels” director Robert D. Nation says the production “will feature some of the finest actors in the South Florida area.” The production first appeared on Broadway in 1993 and was included in Harold Bloom’s controversial 1994 list of the most important works in literature. “Angels” – which has not been seen in South Florida in over a decade – previews August 11, opens August 12, and plays through September 4, with shows on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 7:30 p.m.

Go, West! South Florida Congressman Allen West was hoping for more of a warm welcome when he was invited by the Wilton Manors Business Association (WMBA) to address its members at a meeting in Hagen Park on August 8. Instead, the invitation drew heat (the prickly kind), including sharp criticism from gay activists. Michael Rajner, Legislative Director of the Florida GLBT Democratic Caucus, wrote to members of WMBA saying that anything short of a cancellation of West’s visit would result in "community leaders and other social justice advocates" "boycott[ing] any and all businesses" that are members of the business association. The Republican West, a retired Army lieutenant colonel elected to the U.S. House in 2008 (his 22nd Congressional District represents the eastern part of Wilton Manors, then loops around to more politically conservative environs), opposes gay marriage, as well as the repeal of the Don't Ask, Don't Tell ban on gays serving openly in the armed services. Rajner said that West’s scheduled appearance at the Island City organization would fly in the teeth of the type of diverse community that Wilton Manors represents. The association’s president, Celeste Ellich, said that West’s opposition to a number of gay rights issues shouldn’t disqualify him as an invited speaker asked to discuss matters related to business, debt and the economy. But Ellich, who ran unsuccessfully last year for a seat on the Wilton Manors City Commission, called a previously unscheduled meeting of the WMBA board on Monday, August 1, to determine the best course of action.
A source close to Open for Business says that as of this column’s writing, the August 8 meeting had been cancelled (which would seem to void the need to rescind West’s invitation, or put the embattled lawmaker in the equally awkward position of having to decline it at the last minute). For his part, West didn’t sit out the controversy watching from the sidelines. In a letter to Ellich, West wrote: "I am concerned about individuals or organizations that would call upon a boycott and try to hurt hard-working small business owners only because an association wants to be better informed on business related issues that are taking place in Washington, D.C." Stay tuned for the fallout.
Domestic Partner Tranquility A report released last week by the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics says that about a third of all workers in the U.S. has access to health care benefits for samesex partners. The findings, which were released July 26, are part of the first comprehensive count of domestic partner benefits by a federal agency. Philip Doyle, the Bureau’s assistant commissioner, says that the results came about after officials added two questions about domestic partner benefits for samesex couples to the National Compensation Survey. The Survey – a sample of 17,000 businesses and local governments – found that 33% of state and local government employees have access to domestic partner health benefits for same-sex couples; in the private sector, that number is 29%. The findings reveal that access to benefits varies depending on the type of job. Among the highest rates of access were had by business and financial managers, at 52%; in the service industry, only 17% of employees had access. (In total, 42% of service workers have access to health care; about a third of those had access to domestic partner health benefits.) Among private employers, the regions of the country with the greatest access were the Pacific region (California, Oregon and Washington State), the Mountain region (including Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico) and New England. The South is among the regions with the lowest access. Among other things, the findings will allow researchers to track whether laws on same-sex marriage affect the availability of domestic partner benefits.
By the Numbers According to the Urban Institute (“Facts and Findings from The Gay and Lesbian Atlas”), Wilton Manors ranks 3rd in the U.S. for percentage of gay residents, as a proportion of total population. (Wilton Manors has approximately 1270% more gay men per capita than the national average.) The Fort Lauderdale area in general ranks 4th in Metro areas (per capita). Oakland Park is ranked 6th. H

Sighs, Queens Determining Penis Size May Be Just a Finger Away By CLIFF DUNN The old canard about the size relation of one’s hands and feet to the length one’s penis has long been dispelled by competent experts. But researchers in South Korea say there may be a direct relationship between finger length and the longitude of one’s manhood. According to researchers at Gachon University in Incheon, the inverse ratio of a man’s index finger to that of his ring finger is a dependable way to determine penile span. Reporting last week in the Asian Journal of Andrology, Dr. Tae Beom Kim, a urologist, and colleagues studied 144 men age 20 and over. (The men were undergoing urological surgery for conditions having nothing to do with penis length.) The subjects’ right index and ring fingers were measured for length prior to surgery. The subjects’ penis length was measured immediately after the subject was given anesthesia; length was measured while the penis was flaccid and after it had been stretched to its maximum protractedness. (According to the researchers, the stretched length of one’s member is believed to correlate to its erect length.) The researchers reported that, gener-
ally, the lower the ratio of the measure of both fingers, the longer was the penis’ stretched length. If you’re tickled by the Korean “finger formula,” you’re not alone: a number of studies have concluded that the ratio of a man’s finger lengths is a function of exposure to the sex hormones estrogen and testosterone, pre-birth. Research suggests that the portion of one’s male anatomy could likewise be so determined. More finger food for thought: Research from the University of Vienna found that males with the lower index-to-ring-finger ratio have more symmetrical faces and are more attractive to females; something called the “sexy ratio.” In 2010, British researchers from Warwick University and the Institute of Cancer Research found that a man's risk for prostate cancer is also related to his ratio between the two digits: men with index fingers longer than their ring fingers were one-third less likely to develop prostate cancer. Choose Choice I spent some time this weekend thinking about life: The past, the present and the future. Then I began to wonder about the choices I have made, and only I made, that have shaped my life. It is so easy to blame circumstance and so on, but when it comes down to it, I made the choices to get me to where I am. Whilst thinking, it became evident that my focus wasn’t on the now or the future, but looking back, examining each choice, and wondering if I had picked the other fork in the road, would be life be better? Different? One of the biggest hindrances to your future, to your life and to your well being is your past. The amount of time we spend looking backwards and missing what’s happening in the now and what you are heading for is ludicrous, but we have to actively choose to change. We all have choices and, as we can’t predict the future, we have to make choices there and then. One way to keep these choices clear is to ensure we always think about the consequences. All your choices in your life will have consequences. Choice, however, is rarely permanent. If you are in a stage right now where you regret your choice in some area of your life, remember you can chose to change that aspect. Did you choose to go back to an ex? Did you choose to live a certain type of negative lifestyle? Have you chosen to ignore the warning signs? Well, now you can choose you, choose to improve your life. Quite simply, the things that determine your life begin with the choices you make. We start off learning about choice from our parents; how to make them, what potential consequences there could be and so on. Yet, every day we think we have a multitude of options before us, where to eat, what to wear, who to see and, though we do, how we were raised and our social standing or background will immediately limit those choices. The biggest choice we face always, of course, is the choice between right and wrong. Sometimes the answer to that question of what is right or wrong is
FOUNDER MULTIMEDIA PLATFORMS glaringly obvious and other times like when you tell a friend a white lie to save their feelings, or when you don’t tell someone something you know so as to protect them. Lying is wrong as a universal truth, yet you can chose when it is right; choose wisely, though! Perception plays a big role in how we choose to react to instructions of right and wrong. In reality, how effective we are at making choices that enhance our lives depends a great deal on individual self-control and regulation. Choice is about weighing up options, deciding a course of action having examined the variables. In the community we are faced with a lot of choices, and each day, we make active decisions on how we will behave, what we will do, and how our actions will pan out.
So many people often say. ‘I didn’t have a choice’. That’s a cop out; there is always a choice – it maybe the choice between two evils but it’s a choice none the less. A lot of what we have to bear in mind with choice is it’s a blessing. We have the options, yet only we can choose to be involved in our own lives. We choose the good, to be kind, loyal, genuine and aware of our surroundings the same way we choose the bad, like choosing to cheat on our spouses, drink too much or be promiscuous. You have to own up to what you choose or, not only are you copping out in that situation, you are copping out of your life.

Many people in this world genuinely don’t, and yet when you look around at your friends and families, you will see that the luxury of choice is squandered and ignored. We don’t harness that power to take on responsibility of our own lives. I looked back and forward and I am now clear. I chose this life, in some way or other, through my conscious and subconscious. I made certain choices that got me to where I am right now. All the negativity or elements I don’t like are up to me to change, and that change will only come about when I say so, when I chose to make it happen. In your life you need to take control, to remind yourself whatever you have or don’t have is up to you. You need to choose to change it – only you can no one else. You can’t expect change until you make it. I hear so many people complaining about things like the economy and their lives and the community and sure, we all have moments where we feel out of control, but you know what? Hispanics, women, Jews, the disabled and/or the elderly, but when it comes to the LGBT community, there always seems to be a different standard. Let’s see the Wilton Manors Business Association invite the head of the KKK or the head of the Aryan Nation come to speak. Mr. West is just a wolf in sheep's clothing and he is no better than David Duke or Erik Rudolph. How embarrassing that a city that prides itself on tolerance and has such a large LGBT community would invite someone to speak who is so very intolerant against the majority of us that live here. Who Knew? A Bed’s Tale – What’s on the sheets may be as important as what happens between them. By sam knew, msw
Condom … check. Playful body inspections … check. Names … check. So, what are you missing that might put you in danger of becoming one of the three hundred million plus people in the world who contract “Sarcoptes Scabiei Var. Hominis,” or what’s more commonly referred to as “scabies”. This infestation of the skin by human itch mites has the possibility of burrowing into the layers of the skin, causing an irritable rash while laying its eggs. And this is one sexually transmitted disease (STD) you can contract even with your clothes on. Transmission of scabies is primarily
through skin-to-skin contact, which is why it is considered an STD. Scabies mites can also be spread through casual contact, such as “dancing, close personal contact, and normal intimate contact between members of a family,” according to Varment Guard, a pest control service. However, scabies can also be contracted via clothes, towels or bed sheets. In addition, individuals with compromised immune systems are at risk of contracting a severe form of scabies called “crusted” or “Norwegian Scabies,” which is more easily transmitted. The most common symptom of scabies is itchiness, usually in areas of the body such as the elbow, between the fingers, armpit, breast, nipples, penis and buttocks. The female mites are responsible for burrowing eggs below the skin, creating grayish-white or skin-colored lines on the surface of the skin. The intense skin itching can lead to further infections, allowing bacteria into the skin, possibly causing inflammation of the kidneys and, for a few dozen individuals each year, death. Unfortunately, individuals can go weeks – even months – before symptoms
develop. However, it is still possible to contract scabies from an infected person who doesn’t display symptoms. A person with crusted (Norwegian) scabies can spread the disease “by brief skin-to-skin contact or by exposure to bedding, clothing, or even furniture that he/she has used,” according to the Center for Disease Control, which is why those infected should seek immediate treatment. Itching may still continue up to three weeks after a topical lotion treatment is applied, which should be simultaneously followed by a laundry list, including bedding, towels and clothes. So, what should be left on your checklist to avoid this type of STD? Here’s a hint … two words. That’s right, “personal hygiene”. Maintaining personal hygiene is vital and a great indicator of your partner’s health status. Although contraction of scabies is not a reflection of one’s personal hygiene, individuals with good personal hygiene and sanitary living condition are less likely to contract the disease. In addition, infected individuals with good hygiene have less mite infestation, decreasing the rate of transmission to others. H

(The following is the finalé of a four part series which has run for four consecutive weeks) He continued kissing me and then, finally, turned me over. He kissed my neck and back and then he propped me up a bit as he began to feast on the lower part of me. I could barely keep my breath as he buried his tongue deep inside of me. After a few minutes of what can only be described as sensational, he whispered into my ear “are you ready”. The question needed no explanation and I just said “yes”. As he pushed it in slowly and steadily, my knees gave out and his strong arms kept me from the ground. He grabbed my waist and hoisted me up and onto my knees. He thrusts were forceful and deep and steady. His grip upon me was firm and he occasionally would bite down on my neck almost in timing when he would go in the deepest. The sweat began to build on us both and I could feel it dripping from his brow onto my back. He started to push faster and deeper until I could not even feel any other part of my body. He briefly came out of me and then laid himself down on the floor and, without giving me instructions, I sat upon him and I took over, pretending that he was one of the horses he had been caring for his whole life. The sweat was so much that my hands kept sliding off his
broad chest. I leaned down and kissed him as he held my butt in his hands and pushed harder and harder. Just at the point when, without even touching myself I was going to explode, I heard a hard knock on the window of my car. I opened my eyes and the man in the cowboy hat I had seen in the sideview mirror was standing there. I was taken off guard. Within seconds of first seeing him getting out of his truck, my mind had taken me so far. It all seemed so real to me, yet it all happened in moments in my thoughts. He gestured for me to roll down the window, so I did and he asked me if I was ok. I told him that the car stalled out and that there were some lights that came on which may be indicating a problem. He told me that there was not going to be a place to stop for a while and offered for me to go with him until the rain stopped. I turned off the car and grabbed my bag and followed him to his truck. When I got into the passenger side, I could not help but ask him if his name was Luke. He smiled and said no. My name is “Matthew”. “Objects in mirror are closer than they appear” took on a whole new meaning that night. H

Ahead of the Game
Gut Instincts have proven successful for property tycoon Vincent Clancy. By whom?
Vincent Clancy, Founding Partner of the Davinci Group, has had a remarkable life, having travelled and spent many years in the automotive industry. He is now turning foreclosures and short sales in the property market into a thriving business. His contributions to the real estate of the community have been ahead of the economic game, from multi-million dollar waterfront homes in the boom to short sales in the crashes. Here is his story. Vincent Clancy was born in 1959 in Westminster, California, near Disney-land, into a large Irish family of 8 boys and 1 girl. His family relocated to the San Francisco east bay area where Vincent attended High School at San Ramon Valley High in Danville, California. His father owned and operated a concrete pumping contracting business still in operation today by one of his brothers. Vince’s Father’s company poured the underwater concrete tube for the BART trains to run through between Oakland and San Francisco under the San Francisco bay. His mother ran the family business from home and took care of the kids. At the age of 17, Vincent took a trip to Hawaii and Maui with his best friend and loved it. “He said I will be back to live here someday”. It turned to be true. At the age of 18, he moved into his first apartment in Walnut Creek, California. A year later, he decided to move to Los Angeles. Vincent had a best friend growing up whose dad was a full-time Realtor© and was told at the age of eight, ‘you could sell ice to Eskimo’s you would do well in real estate boy.’ It turned out to be a good assessment. In 1979, Vincent was working as a parts manager of an independent Volvo service and body center in Beverly Hills. He bought his first foreclosure in 1980. He convinced the lender to approve his loan
by driving to Orange County to the lender’s head office and speaking with the lady who was handling the loan directly. Not possible in today’s crazy lending maze. Also in 1979, he met his first partner Jana Alor, an English student from Mexico City. His father relocated the family to Mexcio City after working as an accountant for the Franco government in Spain. While his friends were playing at the beach on free time, Vincent and his lover were sanding, painting and fixing. He bought his second home in 1983 in the Hollywood Hills near the famed Mulholland Dr. Since interest rates were 21 percent on home loans, he arranged owner financing with the seller and moved in. In that same year, he partnered with one of his coworkers and opened his own service center in LA. “We bought 10,000.00 square feet of land on the busiest traffic corner in all of LA and modified a warehouse to fit the of the service center needs,“ he says. It was not a good time for the economy and his plan worked out well for the business,
were no Saturn’s on the road yet. No service or repairs needed. Vincent came up with an idea that Saturn would be the family one-stop service center for all the family cars, no matter the make or model. He started accepting ALL PRINTED COUPONS FROM ANY COMPETETOR. The Idea was not received well by the brass of GM, but it worked; the service and parts and body centers started showing profits running in the black in 90 days of opening. He was honored at an annual banquet in San Francisco in front of 800 of his peers. It was an idea that worked, yet again. Vincent proved his instincts were ahead of the game. In 1994, he was burnt out on 14 to 17 hour days at Saturn (they wanted him to open 18 more stores). He was missing the islands terribly and his real passion for real estate. He left Saturn and moved back to Hawaii, where he started buying and selling pre-foreclosures. He saw the Hawaii real estate market overheat and was watching it crash; the Japanese invasion was over. Huge Japanese banks were failing, property
tripling in revenue in one year offering better service at lower prices than the big dealerships. In 1985, Vincent and Jana, his lover of six years, moved to Honolulu with three mechanics, their families, a dog and two canaries plus all kinds of equipment to open a service center in Hawaii. Vincent bought an existing Porsche repair business and renovated and expanded it. It became the largest independent repair service and parts company for exotic cars on the islands. He lived in Manoa on the island of Oahu. In 1991, his lover of 12 years passed away. It was the end of an era, a chapter had closed. He sold his business that year to help pay medical bills and take time to recover from the huge loss. In 1992, he was hired by GM to open new car dealerships for a line of cars called Saturn, a completely new American car. He went to Tennessee for culture and product training. He was transferred to Sacramento, CA, and then to San Francisco to open new Saturn dealerships in those markets. At that time, it was taking Saturn dealerships 18 months to turn a profit. There
values dropped 40 percent. He studied other areas and had an interest in San Diego – the economy was not good in the early 90’s. He felt San Diego was ripe for a turnaround from the loss off the shrinking military cuts of the late 80’s that caused their economy to take a hit. In 1995, he went forth, followed his instincts and moved to San Diego and started buying real estate. It proved the right move. In 1999, he met his current partner Steven Eres. They were introduced the old fashioned way: By a mutual friend. The first question Vincent asked Steven was, “You’re cute but can you cook”? Forty pounds and twelve years later, the question was well and truly answered. In 2000, he moved backed to San Francisco and started buying foreclosures in Hawaii, commuting twice a week from Honolulu to San Francisco. In 2004, Steven bought a two level condo in South Beach. They moved to Florida in September, 2004. Then, in 2005, Vincent got his real estate license and was successful at selling multi-million dollar waterfront homes from the start. In 2007, he met with a local builder of
luxury homes and told him he felt a Japan/Hawaii crash was in the works and asked for all of the 130 listings worth over 100 million dollars. He told the builder he needed to drop prices and sell out of his inventory in six months to survive. He mentioned Lennar homes as an example. Vincent felt he had seen this crash before. He told the builder banks would fail before this is over. The builder laughed out loud at that notion, but gave Vincent all his listings; the builder and his wife, however, refused to lower prices. Wachovia cut their credit line and then Wachovia itself went under. In 2008, Vincent got his broker’s license and DaVinci Realty Group, Inc., was born. With agent Dalia Baciulyte, the name came from her first two letters and Vincent’s first four letters (yes, a real DaVinci Code!). Together, they have sold over 20 million dollars in real estate in a declining market since 2008 In 2009, Vincent saw banks willing to take huge discounts on the loans to the builder to cash them out, 20 cents on the dollar in some cases! Vincent knew at that moment he needed to change his business model and buy distressed properties and sell them to the buyers who are looking for great deals. Dalia and Vincent went to the Broward County courthouse foreclosure auctions to get the deals they were looking for. Instincts won out again. They are always expanding their reach into fast track short sales and buying notes directly from lenders holding distressed paper. “Bad news is VERY GOOD news for those that know what to do with it,” Vincent states Vincent newest idea he is working on is to start a regular blog on his website, www.davincirealtygroup.com, to educate and inform the public of the ever-changing landscape as it relates to foreclosures and short sales and Iivestment opportunities for the general public. He is finding many people are just not informed, or worse misinformed. He hopes that this free forum can help people make informed choices about their own situations. He has opened a second office at 18 E. Oakland Park Bl. and Steven Eres, Vincent’s partner of 12 years, has come on board since June 2011 to help run his offices as he expands another successful business model. Vincent says his father, a man of few words, gave him some advice that stood him in good stead for his life: “Life is full of choices. You make good ones and bad ones. For your sake, make more good ones" H

Jack Atwell, Owner & Chef By ALEX VAUGHN How long have you been here? I have lived in Fort Lauderdale going on 11 years. What brought you to South Florida? I think the biggest reason I came to Florida was the weather and the beach. I also found a more open gay life style here. Please tell Agenda readers about your business. I own a catering business and currently have expanded to a gourmet Bistro near the beach. We specialize in all homemade comfort foods. I think the biggest reason we are different, from a catering standpoint, is our foods are made in our kitchen and not from a vendors freezer. Our fresh approach to our entrees and catering is setting us apart from others. How long have you had your business and how is it going? My catering is relatively young in Fort Lauderdale – within the past 4 years. I owned a restaurant and catering company before moving here. My catering business has grown very rapidly, which is the reason for expanding to the bistro. I am very thankful to everyone who has supported my dream and help make it a reality. What niche did you feel was missing, that you started your business? I would like to think people are tired of mediocrity when it comes to food. I felt there was a need for real food – real food meaning, anything not pre-made, prepackaged or frozen. What is interesting

is how many people have never even tasted a homemade French fry. I know that seems silly, but think about it. Where do you go to get something made fresh? I know some people don’t care if a French fry is hand cut and are perfectly happy, but I’m not and that’s why I opened Moments In Time. How does your business benefit the community? I feel the benefit is simple I offer fresh made meals that are prepared in my kitchen daily. What advantages do you feel there are having a business within the gay community? I have felt the over whelming support from the gay community since the start of Moments In Time. So many people have reached out to help me I can never express all the gratitude I have for some many great people here. What disadvantages do you feel there are? I see no disadvantages it has all been a very positive experience. How would you identify your management approach? Well, I believe you treat people with respect and show them they are important as part of the team. If you give a person something to be proud of in their job, they will take pride in working and do the best they can. You have to make people feel needed and important. You can never talk down to someone or be disrespectful.
What do you feel about the idea that the summer season is slow? Summer is always slow here. How do i combat this pressure? I try to keep a positive attitude and work on ideas and projects that will better the business. How do you think the community as a whole responds to your business? I think that Moments in Time has had such a great response from the community. I am so excited for the months to come and all the great parties we will be fortunate enough to be catering. In your lifetime how do you feel the gay community has changed? The biggest change I have seen is the openness that has happened. This has not been an easy journey for the community, but it is changing for the better. Do you see a positive change in attitudes towards the gay community? I do see a positive change. I think what would be most helpful is if the media could focus on some regular gays; it seems as if everytime you see something in the news the media choose to use pictures or videos of the extremes and somehow forget to put anything about the average person.
Do you believe there is credence to the idea a business geared towards the gay market is cutting out a major section of the wider community? My restaurant is open to everyone. What plans do you have for the future? Big plans are in the works for Moments in Time. I am in the process of attaining a beer and wine license, sit-down dinners and lunches. Very exciting. I hope to have this in place by mid-October. If you had an open check book, what business would you go into next? I dont know really. Sure, I do have hopes of expanding and opening yet another restaurant. I have always liked the idea of a bed and breakfast though, so let's say that! Moments In Time Catering & Gourmet is currently open for tastings and lunches, but will soon be opening for dinner.

The Skinny on Skinny Jeans It looks like skinny jeans for men are here to stay. By ERIC CHRISTIAN Some say the “skinny jean” was inspired by the rock-n-roll elite, such as The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, in the 1970's. When the 1980's came around, the trend had become popular among both men and women. Many ask, “Who is to credit the nowso-fashionable skinny jean trend?” Many argue women; many argue and blame men. The truth is, it was the fame and popularity of famous MALE rock bands that revolutionized the trend. Can many of you recall Mick Jagger or Steven Tyler of Aerosmith gyrating across the stage of sold out shows? The original source of skinny jeans starts back in the 50's, when jeans symbolized the passion of youth and rebels which progressed through the 80's. Celebrities always had a huge effect on their fans, so the way they dressed was constantly causing their fans to mimic them. Marlon Brando, James Dean and lots of other idols are included as the ultimate examples of this trend. The “skinny jean” trend faded away in the 90's when popular bands began to wear leather pants and form-fitted jeans. Skinny jeans
seemed like a flash from the past when they appeared in stores a few years ago. They seemed more suited to women. Today, sales of men's skinny jeans are going strong, and mass brands like Gap and Levi's are getting in on the action. As soon as the 21st century approached, companies and brands, such as Seven For All Mankind, Stitch's, Diesel, and Rock & Republic, jumped in on the bandwagon and began to mass produce, market and widely advertise. Rock & Republic says sales of its men's skinny denim over the past several months rose 26% over last year's figures. In turn, this has caused the rebirth of the “skinny jean.” There are no signs of this so called “trend” slowing down, I must add. With actors and pop stars like Zac Efron, Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne, Justin Timberlake and Kanye West (to name a few) wearing skinny jeans, they have not only become popular all over again, but this cult following has given permission for style-conscious young men to wear them. After all, and because of this, the “skinny jean” is not so much associated with the term “gay” as it was in the past. H

Richard Gray Resigns Pan Capital! Richard Gray, founder of the Royal Palms and member of the Broward County Tourist Development Authority, has resigned his position as marketing and promotions director for Pan Capital. He is also finishing his term with the Broward County Tourist Development Authority and will not seek his seat on the board again. Pan Capital is a corporation of Swedish businessmen who have been gobbling up beach property at an unprecedented rate recently, purchasing the Schubert Resort, Orton Terrace, The Dunes, The Flamingo and Blue Dolphin guest accommodations. The group has also purchased a number of straight motels and hotels on the beach. Gray declined to discuss his resignation. The news of Gray’s resignation has shocked members of Fort Lauderdale’s tourist industry. Gray was instrumental in developing Fort Lauderdale as a gay tourist destination worldwide. He joined tourist development authority in 1996 and persuaded the County to set aside $35,000 for marketing to the gay traveler. Last year’s budget for gay tourism was $500,000. He is also Vice President of the
International Gay and Lesbian Tourist Association (IGLTA). In 1991, Gray founded the Royal Palms Guest Accommodations that has won 5 Star Travel Awards numerous times

Matty’s Planning 3rd Anniversary Matty’s, the watering hole that’s taken Wilton Manors by storm, is in the final stages of planning for its 3rd anniversary on August 22. It promises to be a blowout as the club opens phase three of the operation. Also on that night, a battalion of hotties will battle it out on stage to see who will be chosen to participate in the 2012 Model Calendar. There also maybe an appearance of a golden girl. Organic Restaurant is Sublime Eating Organic is a Surprising Treat By REBEKAH SUSA For the first time in since I moved to Jacksonville in 2007, I was nervous about leaving on vacation. You see, for the last 30 days, I had been on this Simply Fit Healthy Living “eating plan” (nicer way to say “diet”), which includes a lot of veggies, allorganic and free range food, and excludes everything my taste buds have become addicted to. So going on vacation was going to be a bit difficult due to the sensitive nature of my new eating situation. However, when I arrived in Fort Lauderdale to stay with my BFF Dave and his sweetheart Ken, I broke the news carefully. “Dave, there’s something I’ve got to tell you before we go any further with my vacation plans.” Dave’s gay expression turned somber as he sunk to the couch. “What is it, darling?” “I’ve become…” I stopped. How do I put this? “I’m eating all organic now.” I winced as he took it all in. After I answered a few questions about being organic, such as no, it does not mean only eating organs, Dave offered, “Well, I know there is this organic place around the corner.” An organic vegetarian restaurant? How could this be? How could Fort Lauderdale, just 250 miles south of my town be so progressive? I had to check this out!

Walking into Sublime, I was thoroughly impressed. This was definitely a classy place. The crowd was mixed – from a gay couple to straights on dates, to families with kids. They were people who had only one thing in common – health. Dave, sporting a “Dumb Jock 18” T-shirt, and I were seated near a waterfall window. Our waiter, Brandon, brought us complimentary pesto polenta – two triangles of delicious cornmeal and greens garnished with cilantro. Since I had been basically consuming raw rabbit food and protein shakes since the beginning of July, the pesto polenta was an orgasmic experience for my taste buds. Dave, who only knows about Sublime because it is on his way to McDonalds, smiled and said, “It’s good.” He let me have almost his entire triangle! We both ordered an organic watermelon cosmopolitan with “tru organic vodka” then reviewed the menu. I was amazed to see the diversity of food types at the organic vegetarian restaurant. Appetizers include soups, a fire-roasted artichoke, edamame, and “broccomoli,” which is a blending of chickpeas, avocado, and veggies on pita bread. For an entree, organic nuts like me can choose from sushi, brick oven pizzas, and a variety of original healthy dishes. Several entrees include “gardein cutlet,” which is a

Compared to green peppers, red peppers have more vitamins and nutrients and contain the antioxidant lycopene. The level of carotene, like lycopene, is also nine times higher in red peppers. Red peppers have twice the vitamin C content of green peppers. Also, one large red bell pepper contains 209 mg of vitamin C, which is almost three times the 70 mg of an average orange! • 8 big Red Peppers, whole • 3 Tbsp Extra virgin Olive Oil • 2 Medium Yellow Onion, peeled and diced • 2 Large Potatoes, peeled and diced • 6 Cups Chicken Stock • Salt & Freshly Ground Black Pepper • Pinch of Sugar • Splash of hot sauce (optional) Line a large baking pan with aluminum foil. Place the whole peppers on the foil and brush lightly with olive oil. Roast, turning as needed, until blackened on all sides. Once they are charred, place all the peppers in a large bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Leave it for about 5 minutes, then scrape off the skin with a paring knife. Remove the stem and seeds, cut away the membranes, and coarsely chop. Reserve any juices in the bottom of the bowl. Heat the olive oil in a large pot and cook the onions with a good pinch of sugar.
Cook until soft and translucent. Then add the potatoes, roasted peppers, the reserved liquid and the chicken stock. Bring to the boil and simmer for about 15 to 20 minutes. Allow the soup to cool slightly before you puree it in your blender. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Hit it with a splash of hot sauce if you like … You are the chef ! H

Exciting Ways to Get That Extra Hard Pump! Keep Your Routine Challenging, Rewarding and Fun! By TOM BONANTI Like every hobby, bodybuilding and weight training can become boring and routine. Doing the same old thing the same way every time is monotonous and counter productive even in the gym. That’s why it’s important to read about new routines and the latest findings on muscle growth, etc., so that your workouts remain challenging, rewarding and fun! This week, I’d like to go over a few common but often misunderstood terms/techniques that can put some fire under your workouts and some burn in those muscles. “Superset” is a widely misused term. Technically, a superset is when you train two opposing muscle groups (i.e., biceps versus triceps, back versus chest) with only a small break between exercises. For example, you may do a set of flat bench barbell press for chest, then move quickly using the same barbell for a bent over row for back. Go back and forth for three sets of each. Take a brief break and then alternate incline dumbbell presses and wide grip lat pull downs. Supersets create balance and joint strength and allow one muscle group a brief rest while you blast its opposing muscle group.
Compound sets are great, especially if you have a problem muscle group that won’t grow. Compound sets employ two intense exercises for the same muscle group. For example, a standing barbell curl can be combined with a preacher curl to really fry those biceps. Perform a set of barbell curls to exhaustion, then move to a set of killer preacher curls to isolate those twin peaks. Compound sets bombard a muscle group working it to exhaustion. If you’re really cruising for a burn, go for tri-sets. This simply means that you add a third or even a fourth exercise to the above torture as you max out those mighty arms. Forced reps are a great way to push muscles just a little harder, once they’ve been pretty much exhausted. Just when you think you can’t do another curl, press or squat, recruit someone else’s muscles to help you! That’s right, get a trainer, partner or buddy to help you squeeze out a couple of forced reps before you rack your weights and call it quits. Learn to accentuate the negative – at least with your reps! When I train clients, I’ll often have them focus on the
negative or eccentric contraction during an exercise. For example, during a bicep curl, explode as you bring the weight to your chin (concentric or positive contraction) then, as you lower the weight (eccentric or negative contraction), slow down and focus as you push your muscles to a new level of fatigue. Try doing negatives with bi’s, tri’s, chest, legs, etc., once a month to maximize size and strength. Don’t overdo negatives, or you may risk injury or overtraining. You're having a house guest come for a visit. Living in Florida almost guarantees having an overnight house guest at some point. Whether family or friends, you want to be sure they are comfortable and have a good time. The key to being a gracious host is to ensure that your houseguests are comfortable and feel even a little pampered.
Imagine You're the Guests If you were the guests visiting at your house, what would make your stay just right? Walk through your house, with special attention to the guest bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room. Imagine being a guest in your house. What items and touches would be convenient and welcoming? ... Room by room.
The Guest Room Wherever your guests will sleep, this room is the most important. Just as stay-
ing in a hotel, you would want the bed to be comfy. So check the bed. Choose pillows of varying firmness, as some people prefer firm pillows to soft ones. If the weather is cold, an electric blanket or quilt is welcoming. Next to the bed, a reading light, alarm clock and tissues are essential. Extras could include a CD player with some nice music selections, fresh flowers in a vase, and reading material. Houseguests need some space for their travel clothes and items. Be sure that the guest room is cleared of clutter before they arrive and has ample closet space with hangers. Extras that an especially gracious host could provide would include a clean bathrobe, disposable slippers, a pad and pen, and a TV in the room with a remote.
The Guest Bathroom Some items are essential for a host to provide. Clean towels, bath-size as well as hand towels and washcloths, are necessary for any guest's comfort. Be sure that the towels are not so fancy that a guest would be afraid to get them wet or dirty. Be sure that the bathroom wastebasket is clean and that extra toilet paper and tissues are easily accessible. Don't be shy about showing guests where you keep the extra toilet paper and tissues. A guest might feel embarrassed asking for a replacement roll after using the last
piece, or finding the roll empty. A good host never wants a guest to feel embarrassed. Extras that a gracious host could provide would include sample shampoos, hair conditioners, toothpaste and lotions in a small basket, along with cotton swabs, nail clippers, shave cream, hair spray or gel and mouthwash.
Roll out the welcome mat for your houseguests.
The Kitchen Put either a pitcher of water or bottled water in the refrigerator along with an assortment of juices and let guests know they're there. Have a bowl of fruit and some assorted snacks in a basket or bowl on the counter, and be sure to tell the houseguests that these are for them. It is also nice to have some assorted cereals, or pastries out for guests. Assorted teas,and coffee for brewing also make houseguests feel welcome. Houseguests don't wish to leave a mess, so talking to them about what to do with their used dishes can help them feel at ease.
The Living Room Make sure it is clean and that there are

cozy blankets or throws on the couch, and an assortment of videos and books put out for the guests to choose from. The walk-through and making a list of guest amenities for each room that your guests will enjoy are the keys to a successful time hosting houseguests. Heterosexual Love
Pretty Crazy and Stupid ... Too! A Film Review by WARREN DAY Compared to the frat boy romps and comic book heroes that have deluged us in 2011, “Crazy, Stupid Love” seems like a mature comedy, even though it’s basically a story of adults acting in very immature ways. Heterosexuals can do that, you know. It certainly has one of the better casts of the year, with Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Kevin Bacon, Marisa Tomei, and Josh Groban (yes, the singer). Along with a seventeen year old baby sitter (played by Analeigh Tipton) and a very horny and heartsick thirteen year old (Jonah Bobo), these actors seem to hit every demographic a marketer could want. Yet the film is really a middle-age fairy tale, and I mean no criticism when I say that. All ages need to see their romantic fantasies acted out on the big screen, where we can do crazy and stupid things and still have a happy ending … unlike real life. Even the young adult romance in this film seems more like a middle-age version of one. What sophisticated guy in his late twenties today would take his big romantic move on a girl from a chick movie almost as old as he is? In the audience I saw it with, this middle-age slant did not keep those under 25
from laughing; maybe they were enjoying watching adults the age of their parents act like idiots. This movie could serve as a “go-to” manual for bad heterosexual behavior; so much so that I don’t think I want my children taught by them or even to allow them to marry. To reverse the normal phrase, this comedy has a richness of embarrassments. In the first scene, one character asks another for a divorce, and his reaction is both funny and embarrassing. And then, for two hours, you see the characters, all of them, get involved in one painfully embarrassing moment after the other. Is it funny? Very much so, but is it fun to watch? That’s a different question and, for me at least, it has a different answer. Humor based on embarrassing situations is a low form of comedy, since it doesn’t require a lot of wit or imagination to get a laugh. Part of the reason we laugh is because these people are doing something worse than anything we’ve done, so when an entire two hours is based on almost nothing but watching people make fools of themselves, there creeps in a kind of smugness in our reaction. We wouldn’t be laughing if this was happening to us. What is a revelation is to see several

actors step outside their comfort zone, and to do so well. Steve Carell handles his dramatic scenes just as effectively as his comedic ones. Ryan Gosling can do light comedy. Marisa Tomei can do farce. Josh Groban can act. What is both refreshing and rare is to see the concerns of middle-age people made the focus of a comedy. That alone will cause many, both gay and straight, to embrace “Crazy, Stupid Love” as one of 2011’s more enjoyable films. H
