Violent Crimes Unit detectives obtained surveillance images from the bank to identify the subject. News media reports generated an anonymous tip that was given to detectives Friday. Working the tip led them to Kohl. Friday afternoon, the detectives established surveillance on Kohl at his residence. Around 2:30 p.m. Friday, Kohl pulled up to his home in a tan Honda with New York license plates, identical to the description from witnesses in the TD Bank incident. Detectives observed a gun and a note in plain view on the front seat of Kohl’s car. Kohl was detained for questioning and, during the course of the interview with detectives, admitted that he scoped out a bank in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea and planned to rob it Friday. Kohl also told detectives he bought a toy gun and black spray paint to make the gun look authentic. The note recovered from Kohl’s car was a bank demand note. Kohl also admitted

TAMARAC, FL – Former Florida Agenda/Mark Magazine advertising salesperson, Rob Kohl, 34, of Oakland Park, is in the Broward County Jail once again. This time, Kohl has been charged with attempted strong-armed robbery and violation of probation. Around 2:15 p.m. on August 18th, an employee at the TD Bank branch on Commercial Boulevard in Tamarac called to report a suspicious incident. A man handed a teller a note and a driver’s license. The note indicated that his daughter had been kidnapped and was going to be killed. It asked the teller what he should do. The startled teller handed the note and identification right back to the man and said she had no idea what he should do. He appeared to become nervous and left the bank. Witnesses said he left in a tan car, perhaps a Honda, with a yellow license plate that had blue letters. As the investigation started, BSO

SAVE Dade: LGBT Voters Should Be Considered in Re-Districting Debate MIAMI, FL – Florida, the fourth most populous state in the union, has yet to elect an open LGBT state legislator. The three larger states, California, Texas and New York, have had an openly LGBT representative serve in state elected office. Other, more traditionally conservative states, including Montana, North Carolina, Utah and Wyoming, all have elected LGBT state legislators. Florida is considered to have the fourth highest population of LGBT people, but gay and transgender people are still not represented in Florida’s state or federal politics. Florida’s redistricting process could change this if maps are drawn to make concentrated LGBT populations a “community of interest”. “Florida’s legislative districts unfairly disadvantage LGBT people from being elected to state and federal office and we want to change that,” said C.J. Ortuno, executive director of SAVE Dade. “We have an opportunity to right a wrong by ensuring the redistricting process fairly includes the number of LGBT communities around the state that are recognized by their residents as a community of common interests. “Not many states have passed statewide legal protections without an openly gay or transgender person carrying the torch in the halls of state or federal government – we want to make sure that the LGBT community is given equal representation for their equal responsibility as productive citizens of our great state,” said Ortuno. Same-Sex Households Up 60% in Tampa Bay Area TAMPA, FL – The Tampa Tribune reported that the number of same-sex couples living in the Tampa Bay area is up 60% over the last decade, according to results from the 2010 Census. Nearly a fifth of those couples were raising children, also according to the Census. The Census counted 10,261 same-sex households in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties, up from just under 6,500 in 2000. However, this dramatic growth only represents 1% of total households in the region and the state. Wilton Manors had the highest percent of same-sex households in the entire state with 6,200 households, or 12%. H
A&F Asks “The Situation” to Wear Another Brand NEW YORK, NY – Us Weekly reported that Abercrombe and Fitch is worried that “Jersey Shore” star Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino has been wearing its clothing out and about. So worried, in fact, that they’re willing to pay Sorrentino, 29, and the rest of the “Jersey Shore” cast a “substantial” amount of cash to stop wear A&F clothing in public. “We are deeply concerned that Mr. Sorrentino’s association with our brand could cause significant damage to our image,” the company said in a press release. “We understand that the show is for entertainment purposes, but believe this association is contrary to the aspirational nature of our brand, and may be distressing to many of our fans,” the statement continued. “We have therefore offered a substantial payment to Michael ‘The Situation’ Sorrentino and the producers of MTV’s “The Jersey Shore” to have the character wear an alternate brand. We have also extended this offer to other members of the cast, and are urgently waiting a response.” H
Transgender Woman Settles DMV Suit SAN FRANCISCO, CA – A transgender woman who went to the Department of Motor Vehicles in San Francisco to
record her sex change and then got a letter from a DMV clerk saying homosexual acts were “an abomination that leads to hell,” will receive a $55,000 legal settlement, according to her lawyer. Amber Yust's settlement includes $40,000 from the state and $15,000 from Thomas Demartini, who was suspended with pay by the DMV shortly after the incident and quit his job in December. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Yust went to the DMV’s Fell Street office in October to record her new name and gender on her driver’s license. She said Demartini expressed no objection while processing her application. But four days later, she said, she got a letter from Demartini that warned her of eternal damnation and referred her to the website of a fundamentalist church, the Most Holy Family Monastery. Yust said she received a DVD from the church the same day, predicting hellfire for anyone “possessed by demons” of homosexuality. Her lawsuit, filed in San Francisco Superior Court, accused the DMV of violating her privacy and civil rights by disclosing personal information. H

Same-Sex Marriage Initiative Clears First Major Step PORTLAND, ME – Same-sex marriage advocates in Maine announced that a citizen initiative campaign for a law allowing same-sex couples to marry cleared its first major hurdle with the Secretary of State’s approval of the language of the proposed statute. This allows campaign volunteers and supporters to begin collecting the signatures required to put “An Act to Allow Marriage Licenses for Same-Sex Couples and Protect Religious Freedom” on the November 2012 ballot. If it qualifies for the 2012 ballot and is approved by voters, “An Act to Allow Marriage Licenses for Same-Sex Couples and Protect Religious Freedom” would permit gay and lesbian couples to obtain licenses to legally marry in Maine. It would not require churches to perform such marriages in violation of their religious teachings. H

At Least 100 Gay Priests Targeted by Blackmailers ISERNIA, ITALY – At least 100 gay priests across Italy were blackmailed by two men who used social networking websites to meet them, according to the Italian weekly, Panorama. The pair asked the priests for up to 10,000 Euros each to keep quiet about their virtual sex sessions via webcam and, in some cases, actual encounters, Panorama said. The newspaper said a judicial probe, spearheaded by magistrates in the town of Isernia in Italy's southern Molise region, led to the arrest of Diego Maria Caoggiano, 35, and Giuseppe Trementino, 30. The men live together in the town of Bagnoli del Trigno, where they have been granted house arrest. H

At a town hall meeting in Cornelius, NC, Tillis was asked about a legislative proposal expected to be debated next month during a special session. The proposal would define marriage as a heterosexual union in the state's constitution. The legislation was introduced in the Senate in February and in the House in April. The Senate version also bans other unions in addition to marriage, which could include civil unions and domestic partnerships, but the House version only covers marriage. Gay rights activists worry that the Senate version could outlaw domestic partner benefits currently offered by private sector employers. H

According to property records, in 2009 Parvaiz was given a 30 per cent share of a building owned by wealthy Manhattan heir Martin Ragusa, 74, who has used a wheelchair since having a stroke ten years ago. Shocked by their supposedly bizarre relationship, Ragusa's family went to court to try to block the deal for such a major share of the $9 million building at 80-25 Parsons Boulevard in Hillcrest, Queens. But, after the legal bid failed and documents were signed on Tuesday, Parvaiz had lined himself up for $2 million of the proceeds from the building, which is set to be sold for $9.3 million in a deal planned to close next month. Ragusa's stepmother, Marguerite, 81, told The Post: 'We signed the contract Tuesday, and I think that's why [Noorani] got killed then.' She added that the deal was designed so Parvaiz and his alleged mistress could start a new life together. '[Parvaiz] was a great con man. Why else would Marty [hand over his share]?' Mrs. Ragusa, who owns a 20 per cent share of the building, said. Parvaiz was 14 years old when he struck up a friendship with a man whose apartment he was doing maintenance work on. This was 12 years ago, when his father had a contracting business operating out of Brooklyn. The man Parvaiz became friends with, Martin Ragusa, has referred to him as a "son," and portraits of Ragusa, who would eat pizza when Parvaiz and his wife and children broke the Ramadan fast with traditional food from their native Pakistan, show him in the center of the smiling young family. Ragusa's stepmother today tells the Post she believes her stepson was in love with Parvaiz, and that Parvaiz used his Svengali-like hold on the older man, who is now confined to a wheelchair, to persuade him to liquidate all his assets, including handing over the rent rolls on an apartment building in the Hillcrest section of Queens. The Parvaiz family had tried to get a court to give them control of Martin Ragusa's assets but failed. Mrs. Ragusa said she did not know whether the pair had a sexual relationship, but she said Parvaiz would often spend the night at his home. 'He's a very handsome young man, and I know Marty liked him. He'd say: "He's like a son to me,"' she said. Speaking after Noorani's death last week, Mr. Ragusa said, 'As far as any friction between [Parvaiz and Noorani], I didn't hear anything like that. It's just that she did not want to stay in Brooklyn. 'The last thing I said to Nazish … She was going for her driver's test and flunked, and I said: "Try again," She said: "Pop, you think I should do that?" I said: "Yes".' He added: 'Who shoots a person nine times, especially a person who has kids?' The former Long Island hair salon owner, who inherited millions from his father, Albert, spoke of Parvaiz as 'my son' and called him 'a good student, a very good father and a very good husband.'
He is said to have paid for the younger man's college tuition and given him $7,000 a month as a share of rent money he was receiving. Another family member said: 'We just couldn't believe what was happening with Marty. He was completely brainwashed. No one recognized him anymore once Kash was in the picture.' Noorani's family said Parvaiz had boasted that the older man was going to leave him everything he owned when he died. Parvaiz initially told police his family had been attacked by a group of men who called them terrorists, authorities said on Friday, but Stephen and Parvaiz exchanged text messages in the days leading up to the shooting, according to an arrest affidavit released by the Morris County prosecutor's office. Texts from Stephen's number describe driving around the neighborhood to see how far away the nearest police station was. 'You hang in there. Freedom is just around ur corner,' read one text sent from a phone listed to Stephen's father to Parvaiz, according to the affidavit. Parvaiz, who has been in the hospital, was charged after admitting he was involved in the killing. Parvaiz's accounts of the attack were inconsistent and immediately raised suspicions, according to Morris County Prosecutor Robert Bianchi. Bianchi said, “it was obvious to investigators that this was sadly the alleged handy work of the victim's husband who allegedly did the unthinkable and plotted to murder his wife.” Friends and family set up a website, www.nazishmemorialfund.org, to help the couple's two children. Writers on its guestbook told of difficulty making sense of what happened and called her death 'senseless and stupid'. One hoped the children would one day be able to 'move forward with beautiful memories.' The site said Noorani 'lived for children' and put them before herself. H ‘ROB KOHL’ Continued from COVER
Earlier this year, Kohl was charged with two counts of grand theft, one count of petty theft and one count of cashing a forged check. By this time, Kohl had already left his employment at Florida Agenda and Mark Magazine. On March 3rd, according to Chris Caputo, Kohl’s roommate, Caputo went online to check his bank account and noticed that a check had been written on his account for $600 and made out to Kohl. Caputo confronted Kohl concerning the check and Kohl denied any knowledge. Upon looking at the back of the check online, Caputo said that he noticed that it had been withdrawn through a bank in Texas. When Caputo contacted the bank, they told him the check was cashed through a Ft. Lauderdale check cashing store. Caputo then contacted the check cashing store which confirmed to Caputo that Kohl was a regular customer. Caputo also claimed that Kohl had pawned a television set owned by Caputo without Caputo’s permission. Upon investigation, Wilton Manors police found out that there was already an arrest warrant pending on Kohl. H

Teacher Suspended for Anti-Gay Facebook Comments MOUNT DORA, FL – A Mount Dora teacher was suspended from the classroom and reassigned pending an investigation by the Lake County School Board after controversial comments he made about same-sex marriages on Facebook. Census Data Reflects Greater Acceptance of Florida’s LGBT Families WASHINGTON, D.C. – According to data released by the U.S. Census Bureau, the reported number of same-gender households in Florida has seen a dramatic increase, up 60% over the past ten years. The data also shows that LGBT families live in every county and every city of Florida. Equality Florida, a statewide LGBT civil rights group, worked with both national and local partners in a firstever “Our Families Count” campaign to educate Florida's LGBT community on the importance of being counted in the 2010 Census. While some portion of the increase can be attributed to Florida's general population growth, up 17% statewide, the real story behind these numbers is that they reflect a much greater willingness on the part of same-gender couples to be out and open about their families. Florida G.O.P. U.S. Senate Candidates Vow Gay Marriage Opposition ORLANDO, FL – Though the Republicans keep saying the next election will be about “jobs, jobs, jobs,” it really appears to be more about social issues. All of the current Republican Senate candidates, former U.S. Senator George LeMieux, former state Representative Adam Hasner, retired Army Colonel Mike McAlister and businessman Craig Miller, have come out against gay marriage. According to the Tallahassee Democrat, when asked about New York's recent legalization of gay marriage, the four Republicans said they supported the federal “Defense of Marriage Act,” which defines marriage as a union of one man and one woman. Orlando attorney John Stemberger, a founder of the Family Policy Council and who ran the constitutional amendment campaign on marriage three years ago, said the four Republicans articulated strong conservative positions in the debate and that support of social conservatives and Tea Party activists was crucial to electing Florida Governor Rick Scott and Florida’s U.S. Senator Marco Rubio last year, along with some members of the U.S. House and local governing boards. Tim Hardaway Helps Pro-Gay Candidates EL PASO, TX – Former Miami Heat player, Tim Hardaway was in El Paso, Texas this week (where he went college) to lend his support to a trio of politicians who are in danger of being recalled due to their stance on supporting gay rights. In town for a golf outing, Hardaway attended a press conference urging citizens to oppose recall efforts against Mayor John Cook and city Representatives Susie Byrd and Steve Ortega. The three are being recalled by a group of religious conservatives who are angry the three voted to restore health benefits for gay and unmarried partners of city employees, despite a ballot initiative in November that had abolished them. During a February 14, 2007, interview on a Miami sports radio show, in response to the coming out of former NBA player John Amaechi, Hardaway remarked that he would try to distance himself from a player he knew was homosexual. When asked by the radio show host whether he realized that his remarks were homophobic, Hardaway responded by saying: “Well, you know I hate gay people, so I let it be known. I don’t like gay people and I don’t like to be around gay people. I am homophobic. I don’t like it. It shouldn’t be in the world or in the United States. “He also said that if he found out he had one or more gay teammates, he would try to get them fired. Later in the day, Hardaway apologized for the remarks during a telephone interview with WSVN-7. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said I hate gay people or anything like that.” He further apologized on February 15 in a statement released by his agent. On the same day, the NBA responded to Hardaway’s comments by removing him from its All-Star Weekend activities later that week. Hardaway’s employer, Trinity Sports, owner of the Andersonbased CBA Indiana Alley Cats, dismissed him from his position as Chief Basketball Operations Advisor and they issued a statement distancing itself from Hardaway's remarks. In a September, 2007, interview, Hardaway spoke about his February comments, saying he “had no idea how much I hurt people. A lot of people.” He described the controversy as “the biggest bump [in the road] in my life” and added, “I’m going to do whatever I can to correct it. That’s all I can do.” In an interview on February 11, 2010, on Hardcore Sports Radio on Sirius, Hardaway spoke about his recent work with The Trevor Project and The YES Institute, which he has done to educate himself on gay, lesbian and transgendered issues. OPINION
Saints & Sinners I have been thinking about religion in relation to the community and what immediately sprang to mind was The Seven Deadly Sins. As awful as it is to admit, and quite frankly a sure path to fire and brimstone, I have always enjoyed the seven deadly sins as a concept. It is pretty easy to think of the gay community in this way. I hold my hands up to them all; oddly of course, for me they have a glamorous feel to them, a guilty pleasure if you will. First off and most obviously, Lust or lechery is usually thought of as excessive thoughts or desires of a sexual nature. Well, there really isn’t one of us that hasn’t done something lustful! Gluttony is slightly more difficult with the whole carb issue, but you can still derive some meaning from the Latin gluttire, meaning to gulp down or swallow. Plus, Gluttony is often referred to as ‘the over-indulgence and over-consumption of anything to the point of waste’. Then there is Greed – like lust and gluttony, a sin of excess. However, greed (as seen by the church) is applied to a very excessive or rapacious desire and pursuit of wealth, status and power. I know plenty of people who follow those ideals; it is one of the most stereotypical ideas of the community illustrated by the ‘power of the pink dollar’. Next up, Sloth. While doing research, I noticed that exact Deadly Sin referred to was believed to be the failure to utilize one's talents and gifts. Though considered the lesser of all deadly sins, it is one of the most prominent. Sadly, due to culture, many of today’s gay people would rather not utilize any of their gifts – other than looks – to achieve status and wealth through using someone. Which leads us nicely onto Pride! In almost every list, pride – or hubris – is considered the original and most serious of the seven deadly sins, and the source of the others. It is identified as a desire to be more important or attractive than others and excessive love of self. This is ever- present in the community and, without a doubt, one we can all admit to in one way or another. Wrath, also known as "rage," can be seen as inordinate and uncontrolled feelings of hatred and anger. Wrath, in its purest form,
presents with self-destructiveness, violence and hate that may provoke feuds. Sadly, as I have discussed before, hate is present in the community within the infighting and the selfdestruction of a community by not accepting each other, though it may not end in violence; I have heard many a hate speech from across every sector of the LGBTQ community. Lastly, Envy is one of the most present in the community, not just for material possessions, but status and one that we can all understand most of envy of relationships, most notably the long lasting happiest ones! Gays are always accused of being sinners and, in many respects, as we can see, we are. However, the fact is everyone – gay, straight or whatever – are guilty of one or more likely, all of the deadly sins. So does the story end there? In essence of sinning and damnation, yes. When looking into this part of religion, however, I found something that is rarely discussed. The Seven Virtues. These provide the opposite to the deadly sins and, when I read into it, I realized something extremely interesting. The virtues aren’t unglamorous or boring or, for that matter, unattainable. They are not the vegan lifestyle to unabashed bar-bq’s! No, they are as likely to be part of the way you behave as the sins First up is Chastity. Not immediately one you would think is easily attached to the community, but if you look into the meaning you will find that sexual conduct is just one aspect; another is to be honest with oneself, one's family, one's friends and to all of humanity. Think about it: It isn’t that far out there is it? Next up is Temperance which, in short, is a constant mindfulness of others and one's surroundings; to judge between actions with proper moderation between self-interest, versus public-interest, and against the rights and needs of others. When thinking about temperance, this is as much a quality of the community as the opposite, Gluttony. When you go up against Greed you come up with Charity. Without a doubt, the gay community knows the meaning and is globally one of the most powerful fundraising communities. Charity, in the traditional sense, also means selfless love. Then, to counter the lazy, we have Diligence, which explores the ideas of decisive work ethic, steadfastness in belief, fortitude and the capability of not giving up. This is easily and fairly the back-
Letters to the Editor In response to the Editor’s Column “One Last Hit” in the Florida Agenda, July 28, 2011. DEAR EDITOR, Thank you so much for your piece last week, you are completely right about not only the sadness of Amy Winehouse’s death but also how recovering addicts are so mean and bitter and don’t help those in trouble. I think that is so wrong and thank you for bringing that up. They should ashamed of themselves the way they are happy to ignore people who are becoming addicted when they should be the people to see the first signs and reach out. Alex Vaughn bone of the community, the fight and ability to guard against laziness in terms of never giving up the right to be equal and upholding one's convictions at all times, especially when no one else is watching. I am proud to say that I see that all the time in the community. Whilst pioneering for rights, gay people have also learned another virtue, Patience: The idea of resolving conflicts and injustice peacefully, as opposed to resorting to violence. Accepting the grace to forgive and creating a sense of peaceful stability and community, rather than engendering suffering, hostility and antagonism. One other aspect of the community that has struck me as someone who has come from a different country, and started off here as alone, is the Kindness I have received. As the opposite to Envy, I have witnessed the charity, compassion and friendship for its own sake that comes with the community’s alignment with Kindness as a virtue. The final virtue which is the opposite to the worst of the deadly sins, Pride, is Humility, the most difficult of all virtues, yet with a glance over the community, it isn’t hard to find humility throughout. Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less. The courage of heart necessary to undertake tasks which are difficult, tedious or unglamorous and to graciously accept the sacrifices involved. This ideal is clear and present whenever we look back to the Stonewall Riots and all the sacrifices and tedious mundane actions that had to be undertaken just to get a semblance of equality. From Humility also comes the ability to refrain from despair and the ability to confront fear and uncertainty, or intimidation. The community has done that consistently, and each of us has managed to achieve some level of humility in our lives. We are all complex individuals. I, for one, know I am both a saint and a sinner, and that I believe is the most balanced one can be because if you live your life within the realms of good and accept the bad, you acknowledge that though you aren’t perfect, but you aren’t evil, either. Perhaps some people need to look for the good in the gay community, rather than the bad. I suppose, ultimately, it is just easier to see the Devil. H

DEAR EDITOR, I just finished reading your opinion about drugs and though I appreciate the subject, and that it is an issue in the community, I think however that your tone towards people with a problem is harsh. You seem to not appreciate the way addiction is; you may have been lucky enough to have not dealt with addiction, but I sense you are passing the buck of responsibility to other addicts. Why can’t you stand up to people you know using drugs, why only leave that to people that ‘should’? As I said, I appreciate the dangers of drugs, and that you bring it up, but I think you should also take responsibility in helping a community considering your position. C. CEASARE

Keep up the great work in reporting various items of interest to our ever diverse community. SINCERELY, FATHER JOE, OFR

The Tiger’s Growl Assuming That Being Gay Is a Choice... By Dave TigercuB Many right-wingers out there claim that being gay is a choice, not a genetic predisposition. For all those Bachmann husbands out there who think they can change us or make us something we’re not, here is an option that could make us all happy … religion. When you think of the gay community, your first thought is not religion; however, if we are to listen to those people out there who say that being gay is a CHOICE, then here is the answer. If you can choose to be Catholic or Jewish, and you can switch your religious beliefs during your lifetime, then why not choose to be gay? I have always known this was MY choice. Somehow I was born knowing that I would rather sleep with a man than a woman. This to me was as innate a feeling as being male, or Caucasian. I don’t know of anyone who was born a Buddhist, or a Jew, but rather they chose that lifestyle based on their family’s religious background, or the environment in which they were raised. If we are to consider making a religion out of being gay, then there are several things that should be addressed. First off, making being gay a religion may be a difficult task; however, if they will allow Jediism to be a real religion, based on the imagination of George Lucas, then what
is to stop us from turning “Gayism” into a religion? If you can be as serious about learning the ways of the gays as you can be about learning the ways of the Force, then we need to seriously address this issue. According to the Temple of the Jedi Order (www.templeofthejediorder.org) “We believe in Peace, Justice, Love, Learning and using our abilities for Good so it's unlikely that our way conflicts with your beliefs and traditions.” I know so many gay guys and gals out there who believe in Peace, Justice, Love, Learning, and using our abilities for good, as well. There are those of us who study our community and who believe wholeheartedly that we are a good community full of good people who want to make the community a better place to live. This could be the start of it … A start to a better life! Religious rights are protected by the federal and state constitutions, as well as federal and state laws. The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and state counterparts protect an individual's right to the free exercise of religion and prevent governments from establishing a particular religion or endorsing religious exercise. Federal and state laws,
including the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA) and the Religious Freedom of Restoration Act (RFRA), create statutory causes of actions against governmental entities for violations of religious rights. The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution provides that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech...” Protection would be the first benefit to making our lifestyle a religion. Employers could no longer fire you for belonging to the Church of Being Gay. You would never have to worry about being thrown out of your home because you’re a practicing homosexual. There are laws in place to protect religious groups from being discriminated against. The second benefit to creating the Church of Being Gay would be the tax benefits. America’s tax laws are designed to favor non-profit and charitable institutions which presumably benefit the community. Non-religious groups also have to be more accountable for where their money goes, while churches, in order to avoid possibly excessive entanglements between church and state, do not have to submit financial disclosure statements.
Tax benefits for religious organizations fall into three general categories: tax-free donations, tax-free land and tax-free commercial enterprises. Now, does that mean that the nightclub you go to every Sunday for T-Dance (a.k.a, Church) can qualify as a tax-free land? Probably not, but one could make the argument that, for example, the Pride Center at Equality Park could be considered our temple. Okay, so it’s now my choice to lay down with a man rather than a woman. If the U.S. government wants to protect religion from discrimination and prosecution, then why not allow us to make being gay a religion, just as they allowed Jediism to receive all the benefits and rights that come along with being a religion? Why are we looked down upon and persecuted? Why are there no laws in place that protect our LGBT brothers and sisters from being harassed and beaten up? The Force binds the Galaxy together, but it has both a Light Side and a Dark Side. So does being gay in today’s society. So, is it really a choice? Going to the Church of the Gays does sound like an awesome time though. I certainly would attend church a lot more if Lady GaGa was performing and Elton John was giving the sermon. H

Open For Business:
Marzola Means “Biz” By CLIFF DUNN Carl Marzola and his Atlantic Properties International realty empire are setting up a second office in Wilton Manors to complement corporate headquarters on Galt Ocean Mile in Fort Lauderdale. Billing it as “the hottest new office concept in South Florida,” Marzola says the new Atlantic Properties International Business Café will take over the Wilton Drive digs currently occupied by The Naked Grape Wine Bar (whose owners, Caleb ben-Avram and Tim Slivinski, are setting up shop just a block north in the former location of the late Painted Pickle). Marzola describes the Business Café as a “new and innovative approach to buying and selling real estate.” The Café, he says, “features many familiar elements to those who know their way around a modern realty office, while incorporating cutting edge technologies and tools – including access to Social Media management and other essential resources to running a business - as well as many professional and office services.” The Atlantic Properties International Business Café will also feature walls of flat screen TVs preset to channels like HGTV (to give its guests expert ideas on home remodeling and renovation), as well as cable news channels like CNN, MSNBC and CNBC, and the brokerage’s own inhouse streaming channel, with real-time updates on Multiple Listing Service information, as well as changes in the mortgage market. Marzola anticipates an opening date sometime around Labor Day.

Sas, who holds a Bachelor of Science degree in International Economics and Finance from The Catholic University of America, previously worked in Washington, D.C. and New York City developing sponsorship programs for clients including USA Today, Gaylord Hotels, SunTrust Bank and Foxwoods Resort & Casino.
Wanted: Captain-of-IndustryTypes Who Enjoy Getting a Tan Last month, the Wilton Manors City Commission approved a resolution to create an Economic Development Task Force whose members will consider strategies to develop a long-term market-
ing plan for the Island City, as well as recommending ideas to encourage economic development. Comprised of nine individuals, the Task Force will also be charged with identifying parcels of land for potential future development/redevelopment. In what reads like a tip of the hat to Noah and his Ark (or is it King Solomon?), the commissioners approved a group composed of one business owner representing a retail and/or general business, one business owner representing an entertainment and/or restaurant business, two commercial property owners (with ownership of commercial property within the city limits), and five Wilton Manors residents with expertise in Real Estate, Development and/or Marketing. The city has accepted membership applications through its Community Development Services Director, the very capable Heidi Shafran.

Cross-Eyed Open Relationships? A Reader’s Response... By JOHN D. SIEGFRIED AJ – Your 8/18 column sounds genuine, so I'll take the time to respond. As a senior (81 and going strong) I've been in a traditional marriage for 35 yrs and now with my male partner for 22yrs. Most of that time has been in monogamous relationships – with a few lapses on both sides of the equation. The last six years have been in an open relationship. Like monogamous relationships, open relationships have been around for centuries and have no relationship to the gay marriage struggle. Your second paragraph confuses me in that you refer to “monogamous companionship,” and then imply that an open relationship is equivalent to promiscuity. You can have monogamous companionship and still be in an open relationship. The real issue is whether you and your partner have agreed to sexual exclusivity or have evolved an agreement that allows for non-exclusivity. I can assure you that envy and jealousy do not “just disappear,” but they can be anticipated, recognized, acknowledged and dealt with. They don't have to be destructive to the relationship. Your ability to tolerate and/or enjoy an open relationship depends in large part on your own self-acceptance and self-image. An open relationship is not a negative reflection on you or your partner. Is sexual exclusivity the foundation of your relationship? Hopefully, you and your partner will realize that your relationship has more going for it and means
more to each of you than simply what happens in or out of your bedroom. You and your partner are the ones who decide what an open relationship means for the two of you. Does open relationship mean sex occasional sex with one or two individuals of integrity or does it mean a different trick every night? The two of you need establish the rules. If you see this new arrangement as diminishing your self-image, move cautiously. Get professional help, preferably with an experienced gay therapist. If you live in the S. FL area, I can highly recommend Arlen Leight. The three rules that govern my open relationship are 1) Be Safe 2) Spare me the details of who, when, where, why and what 3) If extra-curricular sex leads to emotional involvement, my partner will inform me. Then we need to talk. The best part of an open relationship is that it's based on honesty and allows for open communication. The likelihood is that if you or your partner strays from your decision of exclusive sex, you'll not share the information because of its explosive potential on the relationship. I'd rather know the truth and deal with it than endure the typical monogamous setup which breeds lying, deceit and ultimately destruction of the relationship. Thanks, AJ, for the opportunity to blow off steam. John D. Siegfried jdsiegfried@comcast.net H

Entrepreneur Series Profiles for The Florida Agenda Over the month of August, we will be highlighting entrepreneurs of the community and getting their take on building a successful business within the community.
The Naked Grape Wine Bar Caleb Ben-Avram & Tim Slivinski, Owners of Naked Grape Wine Bar By ALEX VAUGHN Caleb Ben-Avram and Tim Slivinski are the owners of Naked Grape Wine Bar, a wine bar specializing in limited production wines, craft beers, artisan cheese and meats and tapas. How long have you been here? What brought you to South Florida? We have been in South Florida permentaly going on 9 years, but bought our condo 11 years ago. We came to Fort Lauderdale when Tim accepted a job here. Please tell Agenda readers about your business. We are a unique, alternative gathering spot on the Drive. We are quiet and mellow, which creates a conducive atmosphere for conversation. It’s a great place to de-stress and relax.
What do you feel about the idea that the summer season is slow? How do you combat this pressure? South Florida needs to come out of the “season” mentality. There are many in the area who are now year-round residents. Summer tourism is actually up also. Those of us who are permanent residents need events throughout the year. We need to become a 12 month area, rather than a 6 or 7 month area. How do you think the community as a whole responds to your business? Our clientele is extremely diverse. All people who come to the wine bar gather and get along well, whether straight, gay,
decrease as time passes. Do you believe there is credence to the idea that a business geared towards the gay market is cutting out a major section of the wider community? It depends on the business. In our case, we welcome the wider community and that co-existence does a great deal to broaden understanding and acceptance of the gay community.
tomers and working with our loyal, fun staff. We really have no desire to change into another business but continue to improve the Naked Grape. H
How do you minimize that effect? In some cases, minimizing it is not necessary. Again, it depends on the nature of the business.
How long have you had your business and how is it going? We are in our fifth year. Business is going well with many loyal local clients. We have weathered the economic downturn well and have adapted to the changing times. What niche did you feel was missing, that you started your business? Many people want a quiet place to meet their partners, spouses and/or friends. We saw a need for a place that would be a great date night spot while, at the same time, introducing limited production wines to our customers. Our addition of tapas was actually a response to customer requests for unique, fun, fresh small plates. How does your business benefit the community? The business has given us many opportunities to give back to the gay community, as well as to the community at large. What disadvantages do you feel there are? We really see no disadvantages.
In your lifetime how do you feel the gay community has changed? Though we still have many steps to take, there is certainly a much greater acceptance in the community-at-large of gay and lesbian residents. We are fortunate to live in an area with such wide acceptance. Most people know someone in their lives who is either gay or lesbian, and that makes it much more personal. It’s hard to feel hatred when it’s that close to home. Though there is still prejudice out there, we feel it will continue to
What plans do you have for the future? As of September 1, we are broadening the wine bar by offering a tapas menu and market items for sale at our new location. This plan has been under development for nearly a year. Our menu will focus on fresh, seasonal items. It will change regularly rather than remaining static. We hope to remain one option of many along the Drive in the years to come as we continue to watch and be a part of the on-going development of the Drive. If you had an open check book, what business would you go into next? We would remain with our wine bar/craft beer/tapas/market concept. We enjoy what we do, our many great cus-
Photos courtesy, The Naked Grape
How would you identify your management approach? Iron Fist or more Flexible? What do you see as the advantages to your approach? Our staff is small and this allows us to be flexible. Our employees have great ideas and suggestions that we listen to and take to heart. We want them to have a stake in the business, so we respect their opinions.
lesbian, old or young. That is a key reason why people come to the Naked Grape. It’s one of the aspects that we, as owners, really like about owning the business. Everyone feels welcome, and people like bringing their parents, siblings and friends into the wine bar when they visit.

Casa de Campo
Oceanfront and Country Extravagance on the Dominican Republic’s Southeast Shoreline By PAUL RUBIO “Casa de Campo” is a common term in Spanish, translating literally to “country house” or “cottage,” often referring to a second or third home for the Latin American bourgeoisie. However, in the Dominican Republic this term takes on a much grander meaning. Here, “Casa de Campo” is a resort, a community, a status symbol and the epitome of Caribbean luxury. Originally a golf resort and recreation zone for the executive elite during the disco decade, Casa de Campo’s 7,000 acres have steadily developed to include over 2,500 villas, homes and hotel suites, as well as a 400-berth marina to complement the award-winning Pete Dye golf courses and the ever-growing spectacle of haute dude ranch amenities. The resort grounds are so large they’re divided into different neighborhoods, and a designated golf cart is essential for traversing the property in its entirety. The resort is unique in that it coalesces elements of sophisticated, modern oceanfront living with estancia elegance and endless opportunity for the outdoor enthusiast. It’s not uncommon to split your days at Casa de Campo
between horseback riding, sunbathing on the beach and sipping tropical cocktails; or sport shooting, kayaking, playing golf on the Caribbean’s top-rated course, “Teeth of The Dog,” and then indulging in a sumptuous spa treatment. With such ample acreage, Casa de Campo has perfected the multi-faceted vacation destination in a superbly fortunate geographic point where temperatures rarely fall below 70 or rise above 82. The resort’s twenty restaurants, fifteen bars, shopping center, movie theater, equestrian center, five professional golf courses, expansive beaches, thirteen fast dry Har-Tru tennis courts, colossal marina and clay shooting center are so well dispersed that Casa de Campo feels like its very own vacation metropolis – no doubt a self-contained world of leisure and pleasure. As the resort name implies, the “casa de campo” experience is one of the myriad accommodation types available for guests. The “Classic Villas,” as well as several of the “Exclusive Villas,” stand as bona fide country homes, with wooden and rustic furnishings that elicit that distinctive home-style coziness.
However, it’s the seaside stunners and the new “Elite Suites” that merit the most attention. Many contemporary “Oceanfront Villas” line the rocky coastline with open, airy floor plans, a heavy emphasis on neutral hues and Earth tones, drawing attention to the floor to ceiling windows that reveal the juxtaposition of blues between the contemporary infinity pool and the dazzling, aquamarine Atlantic. These villas offer pure private decadence – your own slice of the Caribbean – with the greater Casa de Campo amenities at your disposal. During last year’s refurbishment of the charming, double story clusters that comprise the hotel portion of the resort, several second floor units were converted into oversized suites, adding full modern living and dining areas to the “Elite rooms.” Beyond the more comprehensive hotel experience, these hotel suites offer close proximity to the resort’s peaceful and gregarious pool areas (a quiet one dedicated for lounging and reading, the other for a little more standing and posing, respectively), the sensational Cygalle Healing Spa, and the bustling main lobby, with Casa’s center-
piece – Minitas Beach – just a short ride away. The perfect combination of swaying palm trees, downy sands and crystal clear waters, Minitas Beach teems with unadulterated beach bliss. Sunbathers revel in the optimal rays, drink in hand from the adjacent beach bar. Water sports enthusiasts choose from the full range of snorkeling gear, Hobie cats, kayaks and paddleboats, eager to take on the Atlantic. Spa fiends opt for the openair massage treatments to the sounds of the crashing waves. Foodies rejoice in a barefoot lunch of fresh salads and seafood at the Beach Club by Le Cirque. For the modern family, Casa de Campo is an ideal tropical retreat that bridges the likes of the most diametrically opposed personalities, satisfying extreme cravings of pampering and/or activity, for each and every demographic. And for the more subdued luxury jetsetter, Casa de Campo offers the greatest breath of villas in the Caribbean, suiting all architectural and interior design tastes of the sophisticated vacation palate. Happy Hour They’ve Got You Covered! By ALEX VAUGHN Wanna know what's in? We've got you covered. The long awaited, anticipated web-show Happy Hour is finally here! The Florida Agenda has the exclusives on Chris, Josh and Vixen right here. We wonder, with such strong personalities, if they get along. Have drinks ever flown on the show? Happy Hour was created to inform the community of all current events that are happening in South Florida while sippin' on cocktails! Three different influential points of view were chosen for the talk show. You have Vixen as the Vicious Ring Leader, Chris Aguilar as the Event Socialite, and Josue Rafuls as the Disciplined Fashionista. The three came up with the idea to have a fun talk show which informs everyone of what is currently happening in South Florida.
Gossip, Fashion, Events, Food, Nightlife – it’s all on Happy Hour! The show, Happy Hour, premiered on JumpMiami.com on August 15th, 2011, with guest Tony Ferro. It has already received over 300 views within its premiere week and is causing an incredible buzz in the community. Maybe all the pool boys have something to do with the hot reaction! Alex Prieto, a current promoter, said "I loved being a part of it" as he watched his episode air on August 24th episode featuring an unexpected and fun Britney Spears segment. “I really want to bring the community together as a whole, so that every organization can see what we're about and, at the same time, inform everyone of what's happening,” says Vixen. “Everyone wants to be part of the show! great feedback from everyone,” commented Chris. “A lot of our viewers really like the fashion segment. They have been following the tips and have even told me that they really work!” says Josh. “We all get along very well; we're very diverse but at the same time we're all Sagittarius so we know exactly where we're coming from. We communicate a lot, which is a great key when having three strong personalities in front of the camera,” Vixen says enthusiastically. The show will continue to feature more incredible guests, upcoming events and the latest on the runway in the coming weeks. Together, these three will entertain, inform and style you till you're tipsy! You can see new episodes of Happy Hour now by visiting www.JumpMiami.com. Cheers! H

A Workout With Balls!
Adding a Swiss Ball Can Turn Exercises Into Challenging Maneuvers By TOM BONANTI plate to your chest as you crunch. Perform as many reps as it takes to get a nice burn. Try reverse crunches by laying flat on the mat with your heels on the ball then crunch as you move the ball simultaneously by bringing your knees up toward your elbows. Don’t forget your obliques – or your “side abs”. Lie on your right side over the ball, left leg over right, hands by the sides of the head, elbows out. Proceed to bend upward as high as possible. Pause, return to starting position. Perform 8-12 reps. Lie on your left side for another set bending up the other way. Swiss ball squats are a great and safe way to build up the butt and legs without chugging a loaded barbell across the back of your neck and shoulders. Stand with the ball between your back (actually the small of your back) and the wall. Squat slowly down until the backs of the thighs are parallel to the floor. Pause. Then return to starting position. Perform 8-12 reps. Make push-ups meaner and more effective by using the ball. Place your hands on top of the ball with
arms bent at a 90 degree angle, legs out behind you and extending up on toes. Proceed to push up to arms’ length. Pause. Then return to starting position. Perform 8-12 reps. To make dumbbell curls, shoulder and chest presses and/or front and side raises more challenging, try them seated on a ball. Of course, use lighter weights at first. Use your Swiss Ball on a mat area for added safety. Swiss Balls come in sizes small, medium and large and can be purchased at any sporting goods store. They usually come with a pump to keep them firm and bouncy! Get one and put some balls into your workouts! For more tips on how to use the Swiss ball in your workouts, please contact TrainerTomB@aol.com. H

Looking for a way to add some bounce to your routine in the gym? Try adding a Swiss Ball to turn easy exercises into more challenging maneuvers. Balancing on a ball as you crunch, press, curl, etc., helps bring more muscle groups into play and forces you to concentrate on maintaining proper form and balance. And there’s no way better to work those core muscles like the abs, obliques, and quadratus lumborum, etc. Performing resistance exercises on a ball is a more effective way to train for sports (i.e., track and field, martial arts, etc.) since in any kind of competition you are in motion and often off balance. Here’s a surefire routine that’ll put some “balls” in your workouts – Swiss Balls, that is! There’s no better way to train abs than by doing crunches on a ball. Lie on your back across the ball with legs bent, feet flat and hands behind your head. Proceed by raising head and shoulders up a few inches. Pause, squeeze your abs and return to starting position. To add resistance, clasp a dumbbell or weight

Dapur A New Standard for Elegant, Delicious & Creative Cuisine By TIM SLIVINKSI One of the most consistently popular cuisines in the dining market is Asian. In the past decade or so, however, Asian cuisine has grown considerably from the old style, family-run Chinese restaurant to modern, hip, urban sushi bars that rank among the best restaurants in the area. Just recently, a new Asian restaurant has graced the Fort Lauderdale scene. Dapur, which is the Indonesian word for kitchen, has, in its short time, already begun to set a new standard for elegant, delicious and creative cuisine. Not only that, but its décor is trendy, beautiful, and very today. On a recent stormy Saturday night, my partner and I decided to dine at Dapur after hearing many of our friends rave about their experiences. Making it into the restaurant just before the deluge, we were immediately greeted by friendly hostesses who showed us to a table. The main dining room is large, but well-placed curtains and draperies allow the space to be divided for private gatherings as well, as to give the large open room intimacy. Dark tile and silver chairs create a very urban feel, and we were anxious to take a look at Dapur’s signature cocktail menu. The cocktails have been created with interesting mixtures of fruit, juices and spirits — each one sounding tastier than the next. After deciding on two drinks and appreciating our good for-

tune of being out of the storm, it was time to ponder our food selections. If you are an adventurous diner and you like to experience many different dishes, flavor combinations and preparation styles, then Dapur will most certainly delight you. The menu offers a wide and eclectic choice of small plates: cold/salads, steamed/grilled, or crispy/pan-fried. As we read through our options, our minds kept changing as each new exotic offering tempted our taste buds. Finally, realizing if we did not make a decision we would not eat, we selected the grilled whole calamari and the rock shrimp. When the calamari arrived, it was an impressive dish to behold. This was not your usual deep fried calamari – not by a long shot. It was an entire Japanese squid that had been grilled to perfectly tender doneness. The first bite revealed a smoky, grilled flavor that was instantly appealing and a texture that was tender, not chewy. We both declared it impeccable. The rock shrimp dish presented lightly fried tiger shrimp and shiitake mushrooms tossed in a semi-spicy mayo. Presented in a cabbage leaf bowl, they were crispy and light, fun to eat and tasty. Choices of entrees, our next decision, can be selected from Dapur’s Big Plate menu. The offerings combine flavor profiles of Indonesian, Thai, Japanese and
Penne a la Vodka
This is an Italian pasta dish always made with vodka and penne pasta, often with heavy cream, crushed tomatoes, garlic or onion, and sometimes sausage or bacon. It is one of the most common vodka food recipes and probably the only “Vodka” dish I’ve ever seen served in restaurants. There are numerous versions of this classic dish, but since I have received numerous requests, I thought it was about time I gave you mine. • 3 tablespoons olive oil • 3 -4 cloves garlic, chopped finely • 1 cup chopped prosciutto • 1 big tin of whole tomatoes, drained and chopped • 1/2 cup of heavy cream • 1/4 cup of vodka • Salt and pepper to taste • Fresh basil to garnish • 1 pinch paprika • 1 lb penne pasta • 3/4 cup freshly grated parmigianoreggiano cheese In a pot big enough to hold all the pasta and sauce, heat the olive oil. Add the garlic and cook until golden brown. Stir in the prosciutto and add the tomatoes, paprika, pepper and salt. Simmer for a few minutes. Stir in the cream and cook for 2 minutes stirring all the time. Add the vodka and cook until it no longer smells strongly of vodka.
Cook the pasta al dente. Add the pasta to the pot and mix until it is all coated. Toss in the cheese, garnish with fresh basil and serve immediately. I actually love to use grated Swiss to finish … but you are the chef ! H

Vietnamese cooking in various creative menu choices. After considering many options that were variously poultry, beef, or seafood, my partner chose Bakmi Goreng. Egg noodles, chicken, egg and vegetables were the ingredients listed. When it arrived, it was a steaming plate of lightly sauced tender noodles that were perfectly seasoned. Chunks of chicken and vegetables offered contrasting flavor and texture to the noodles. I decided to try the Crispy Duck for two reasons. First, I had heard others rave about it, and second, because it is a classic comfort dish for me. The duck was prepared with a perfectly crispy exterior, not at all greasy, and a very moist flavorful interior. The accompanying Dapur Chili Sauce, however, was the real test. Far too frequently, these sauces are overrun with too much garlic and are cloyingly sweet. Dapur’s sauce offered just the right amount of seasoning to flavor the earthiness of the duck without overpowering the meat. It was, perhaps, the very best chili sauce I have ever tasted with Crispy Duck. We were both satisfied with our entrees while, at the same time, making a vow to return to try many of the other tempting dishes on the menu. In addition to its Small Plates and Big Plates, Dapur offers a large selection of Specialty Rolls. Though we did not order
DAPUR 1620 N. Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale, FL 954-306-2633 any of them on this visit, tables around us were pleased with their selections, and the rolls were plated very attractively. After finishing dinner, we wandered into Dapur’s cocktail lounge for a nightcap. The lounge is anchored by a very large bar with bottles of various liquors backlit in a wonderfully beautiful way. High top tables surround the perimeter of the bar, as upbeat music creates a very downtown urban feel in the lounge. You can also order light fare in the bar to accompany your chosen cocktails or wine. Dapur may be new to Fort Lauderdale, but they are already giving a level of service, quality of food and ambiance that much more established restaurants would envy. If you are looking for a hip, new place to take a spouse, a date, or a friend for dinner, Dapur will impress. I cannot wait for our next visit. H

Save Your Home By MICHAEL FRENCH
Hardly a day passes without more doom and gloom about home foreclosures. Florida, as home owners know all too well, is suffering through a devastating and prolonged housing slump. Foreclosures only add fuel to the housing crisis fire, furthering the devaluation of our homes. Some predictions forecast another 5 years of tumbling home values. You have to live somewhere! Our home is the most important investment most of us will ever make. Don’t surrender and just walk away from it! Do you love your home? Do you want to save your home? There is help out there. You just have to be prudent, patient and persistent. Television and radio is rife with law firms and other companies advertising their ability to prevent you from losing your home. As with anything, some firms are more qualified than others and
there are less than scrupulous entities preying on desperate home owners. What should you do if you think or you know you are in danger of losing your home? First, and foremost, call your lender. Do not wait to receive an acceleration or foreclosure notice. Do not avoid phone calls or notifications. Communicate your situation to them. The lender does not want to have your home back. They may offer you plans and solutions. Listen carefully and take notes. There are ways to escape having your home foreclosed on. Some are private and others are government sponsored. The Federal government has created programs during the past 3 years to help Florida’s homeowners keep their homes out of foreclosure. For your own piece of mind, do some research on the reputation of the firm you are considering hiring to assist you with your foreclosure defense. Most attorneys will give you a free consultation. Their fees vary and are usually not very expensive. It’s worth the investment. There are criteria to meet for qualification of a home loan modification. On occasion, the regulations governing the modifications change. Some typical requirements are: • Must be a Florida resident;
• Must occupy property as primary residence (the property cannot be vacant, abandoned or rented); • Borrower/co-borrower must be unemployed or underemployed through no fault of his/her own, which makes the first mortgage unaffordable; • Must have documented total household income at or below 140% of the area median income (AMI), adjusted for household size; • Must have an active checking/ savings account; • The current mortgage must be serviced by a participating lender, who agrees to accept payments on behalf of the homeowner; • The mortgage must not be more than 180 days past due at the time of application; and • The loan must have been originated on or before January 1, 2009, and have a principal balance of less than $400,000. This list is not all inclusive; other information and documents may be required prior to determining eligibility. One program is the Florida Hardest Hit Fund for HHF financial assistance. www.FLHardestHitHelp.org. H

“Angels in America” Is It the Greatest Gay Play Ever Written? A film review by WARREN DAY A positive stereotype that both heterosexuals and homosexuals hold about gays is that they’re more creative than most and without them theater would be half what it is. If that’s true, then why is it so hard to come up with a substantial list of great gay plays – that is, plays of lasting value that focus on the lives of gay men and lesbians? Give it a try and see if you don’t have difficulty in listing five masterpieces, much less ten, and if you remove the ones that deal with AIDS, you might have trouble naming three. Where is our “Death of a Salesman” or “Long Day’s Journey into Night?” Even the best playwrights who were homosexual (Oscar Wilde, Tennessee Williams, Thornton Wilder, Edward Albee) produced no great work dealing openly with gays. In Tennessee Williams’ plays, the gay character is always dead before the curtain goes up (i.e., Blanche’s husband in “Streetcar,” Brick’s football buddy Skipper in “Cat,” and Sebastian in “Suddenly Last Summer”.) Some of the best known gay plays, the ones that originally broke the barriers, can seem quite dated today, such as “The Boys in the Band” and “Tea and
Sympathy.” The exception to this is possibly “The Children’s Hour.” And while Terrence McNally (“Love! Valour! Compassion!”) and Paul Rudnick (“Jeffrey”) may have given us some enjoyable and meaningful evenings in the theater, only a few would call their plays timeless classics. So, almost by default, Tony Kushner’s “Angels in America” obtains the distinction (and the burden) of being called “the greatest gay play ever written”. In dramatizing the moral quandaries of the AIDS crisis in 1985, in both public and private lives, it has umpteen awards to support that claim, winning both the Pulitzer and the Tony and, as a mini-series on HBO, a slew of Emmys and Golden Globes. Harold Bloom, the go-to arbitrator of such questions, put it on his list of the greatest works of literature in the western world. For now, at least, it’s the “Hamlet” of gay plays. And the Andrews Living Arts Studio (ADL) in Fort Lauderdale is giving you a rare chance, until September 4, to see this gay masterwork, a play not seen in south Florida for over a decade. Granted, it’s so highly-acclaimed and that gays hold so prominent a role behind and in front of the curtain in Florida theater, why hasn’t it been staged more often? For one reason, it’s a difficult play for a community theater to do because it’s actually two plays running seven hours total (ADL is doing only an abridged version of “Part I: Millennium Approaches”); the script is multi-layered, epic in its themes, and consistently shifts between reality and fantasy. “Angels” requires a level of acting and directing that’s hard for any company to achieve. ADL deserves big kudos for attempting such a play. However, I cannot review inten-
What Are Best Gay Plays? Remember this isn’t a list of the most enjoyable or personally meaningful, but simply what might be considered the best written of the plays that have their main focus on gay issues or a gay or lesbian character. In alphabetical order, my personal list would include: • Angels in America by Tony Kushner • Bent by Martin Sherman • Boston Marriage by David Mamet • Breaking the Code (about Alan Turing) by Hugh Whitemore • The Children’s Hour by Lillian Hellman • The Dresser by Ronald Harwood • Entertaining Mr. Sloane by Joe Orton • Falsettos by William Finn
tions or ambition, only the results, and on that score it’s a very disappointing production. Anyone seeing “Angels” for the first time here would have no idea why it’s considered a great play. The acting ranges from adequate to embarrassing, with at least three of the actors noticeably older than the characters they’re playing. That last point is not minor, since questions and struggles that occupy people 27 to 32 begin to strain acceptance when played by someone who looks at least ten years older than that. Part of Kushner’s genius is how he uses mundane language to communicate profound meanings and humor to explore some of life’s darker moments; but in this production, the mundane stifles the profound and much of the poetry and laughter is lost in delivery. After being assured they would be using the Broadway script, I found at least an hour had been cut, with whole scenes and characters gone, and with them some of the needed coherence and substance. Joe Pitt’s mother is now in only one brief scene, and Ethel Rosenberg is reduced to some spooky music. The director still has some of the 11 actors play multi-roles, but he changes the careful schematic Kushner intended. There was a good reason to have the Mormon mother play the male Rabbi, the Angel to play the nurse, and the same actor who plays Lewis’ lover be his trick in the park. That’s all changed in this production, and it’s to the detriment of the evening. As to the larger question of why there are so few great gay plays, if you keep in mind that dramas focusing openly on gay issues and characters have only happened in the last 43 years of the 2500 year history of theater in the western world, then maybe it’s more understandable that there isn’t yet a longer list of classics. That same period has also been a lean time in producing masterpieces on the

lives of straights (hence all the revivals). Instead, think about what a future Tennessee Williams or Oscar Wilde might write, or what they and others could’ve written if their times had been different. If you remember that William Shakespeare wrote his most ardent love poetry to a young man, then just try and imagine the gay play we might have today if he’d been allowed his “Romeo and Romeo.” As the angel says at the end of “Millennium Approaches,” “…the great work has (just) begun.” H
