CENTRAL FLORIDA

By BOB KECSKEMETY After a long, hot summer, fall is approaching and so is South Florida’s theater and culture season. Broward County has one of the largest and most diversified theater seasons south of Broadway itself, and why shouldn’t it? With so many New Yorkers migrating to South Florida every year, our “snowbirds” deserve a little New York even when it’s December and 80 degrees. The Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Parker Playhouse, Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center, Aventura Arts and Cultural Center and “Broward Presents” at Miramar Cultural Center/ Artspark have been busy all summer putting together one of the best and most diverse theater seasons to date. But heed this warning: plan ahead and get your tickets early because sell-outs can be expected. “Broadway Across America” at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts

Apple’s new CEO Tim Cook might not only be the most powerful man at Apple but also one of the most powerful gay men in American and a technology leader in Silicon Valley. Last week, Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple Computers, resigned sighting health reasons. It had been widely known that Jobs has been in ill-health for a number of years including fighting pancreatic cancer. Jobs cited an inability to meet his current expectations as CEO, but asked to remain within the company as chairman. No one was actually surprised by Jobs’ stepping down, but neither were they surprised by him naming Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook to Chief Executive Officer Cook, 50, who has remained private about his sexual orientation, was outed earlier this year by Gawker when it named him “the most powerful gay man in Silicon Valley.” In the Gawker profile of Cook from

earlier this year, they said that Apple management would support Cook even if he publicly acknowledged his sexuality, but did have “concerns about whether his coming out would impact of the Apple brand.” Although Cook has never publicly commented on his sexuality, Out Magazine named him its most powerful gay or lesbian person of 2011. In its profile of Cook, Out Magazine wrote: “Although Tim Cook has chosen to be discreet about his sexuality, just know that Apple’s heir apparent is gay sends a compelling message of the opportunity to thrive in the workplace. That’s a big deal.” They listed Cook as number one in their Power 50 index. Cook grew up in Robertsdale, Alabama, near Mobile. His father was a shipyard worker, while his mother was a homemaker. Cook graduated from high school at Robertsdale High School, earned a B.S. degree in industrial engineering from Auburn University in 1982, and his M.B.A.

Pride Center Expands Efforts to Reach GBTQ/MSM with Addictions FT. LAUDERDALE, FL – The Pride Center at Equality Park, in association with Lambda Men’s Brotherhood, have created a new social networking program called Youth Gay Meth Free (YGMF). YGMF caters to the young GBTQ men in South Florida who struggle with crystal methamphetamine addiction – commonly known as “Crystal,” “Tina” or “Ice” – along with other substances. YGMF is currently available on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr, with the goal of grabbing the attention of young GBTQ males with these tragic addictions. “I’m very excited about this new program because there are so many young men struggling with additions,” said Mitchell Jerus, Youth Coordinator running the YGMF Program. “We already have much of our online social networking programs in place and very soon we will have a peer counseling program both online and offline. “These young men often feel alone with no one to talk to about their problems,” continued Jerus. “That’s why we’re here, so they know they’re not alone and that someone is there to help. We anticipate this program will be very successful and we’re using the slogan ‘Get Your Shine Back’ showing these young men that they can emerge from their dark places. “Numerous indicators confirm problematic crystal methamphetamine use among some sexually active men who have sex with other men. GBTQ/MSM young people’s questions regarding sexual identity and sexual behavior need to be addressed. These young men need skills to address and resist using substances as they become

exposed to new behavioral options in the gay community.” “In my experience catering to LGBTQ youth and their families, many of the young men I’ve met that use crystal meth are young sex workers: dancers, go-go boys, adult film performers, escorts, etc.,” said Listron “Blue” Mannix, Expanding Testing Initiative Manger overseeing the YGMF program. “We’re reaching out to other organizations that can help this program flourish and become the hope for a better future to others that it’s supposed to be,” concluded Jerus. “We feel that by collaborating with programs such as Meth and Men, the Sunserve Youth Group, MProject and other treatment centers, that young men struggling can get the help that they need and deserve.” The core of this program is located at the Pride Center at Equality Park on Dixie Highway in Wilton Manors, or by going online to Facebook and looking for “YouthGay MethFree”. These locations included London, Lebanon, São Paulo, Miami, Spain, Edinburgh, Berlin and Serbia. O’Neal’s videos not only served as sex films, but were also travelogues showing some of the famous sites in the various cities. It is from these locations that, as Loftis, he submitted some of his iReport segments for CNN. O’Neal’s hard-core performances won him several awards. The “World of Men” series has been nominated many times for awards and World of Men: Lebanon has won a GayVN Award for Best Pro/Am Release and a Grabby Award for Best Videography jointly for Collin O'Neal and Dan Fox, again for Lebanon. O’Neal said that CNN knew about his porn past and didn’t have a problem with it, but can’t believe that the Miami-Dade School Board would, since he gave up the business. H

from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business in 1988. Cook spent six months at Compaq as Vice President for Corporate Materials before he was hired by Steve Jobs to join Apple in 1998. He initially served as Senior Vice President for Worldwide Operations. Cook is credited with pulling Apple out of manufacturing by closing factories and warehouses around the world. This helped the company reduce inventory levels and streamline its supply chain, dramatically increasing margins. In January 2007, Cook was promoted to COO. Cook served as Apple CEO for two months in 2004, when Jobs was recovering from pancreatic cancer surgery. In 2009, Cook again served as Apple CEO for several months while Jobs took a leave of absence for a liver transplant. In January 2011, Apple’s Board of Directors approved a third medical leave of absence requested by Jobs. During that time, Cook was responsible for most of Apple’s day-to-day operations while Jobs made most major decisions. Following the resignation of Jobs, Cook was made CEO of Apple Inc. on August 24, 2011. While Jobs was known for his showman's flair, Cook is known for improving profit margins and for being strong with supply chain management. Cook is credited with rapidly fixing Apple's “notorious manufacturing inefficiencies” and solved the inventory problems that dogged the company’s ability to supply enough of popular products like the PowerBook while spending too much to warehouse models that weren’t selling. AppleInsider described Cook as a workaholic who survives on a diet of “an endless series of energy bars,” Cook is said to pride himself “on being first into the office and the last one out,” and expects a similar level of commitment from others. “Unlike Jobs,” said AppleInsider, “Cook is not seen to be a product visionary nor a ‘compelling public speaker,’ tasks Apple's management team has delegated to design chief Jonathan Ive and marketing chief Phil Schiller, respectively. Like Jobs however, Cook hasn’t been shy about thawing sharp critiques at competitors’ products, recently describing various vendor’s tablet products as being ‘big, heavy, expensive,’ ‘bizarre,’ or simply ‘vapor’.” H

Protesters Don’t Want Boxers in Hell’s Kitchen

California State G.O.P. Will Permit Openly Gay Candidate to Speak at Their Convention

NEW YORK, NY – Owners of the popular Boxers gay sports bar located in the Chelsea section of New York City had planned to open a second location in Hell’s Kitchen; however, the neighbors in that new location say that the bar would be too close to a school and playground. According to the New York Post, the Hell’s Kitchen site is right around the corner from Sacred Heart School and next to the playground of PS 111. Protesters are saying the problem is not that Boxers would be a gay bar, just that it’s a bar in general. The building that Boxers wants to locate to would be within 200 feet of Sacred Heart, which is too close under zoning laws. But the owners of the building want to subdivide the site so that the bar itself sits just outside the mandated limit. H

The earthquake, which caused a four-foot crack in the monument, claimed that it was a sign from God because of sin, legal abortion and the country’s tolerance of homosexuality. He then said that America will receive the same lethal punishment as Sodom and Gomorrah, and that the crack was just a symbolic message of more to come if the country didn’t change its ways soon. H

Cyndi Lauper Shows Her “True Colors” NEW YORK, NY – Cindy Lauper is opening housing for LGBT youth. The opening is scheduled for September 1 and is going to be called The True Colors Residence. Lauper explained that New York City has a very disproportionate number of homeless youth who identify as LGBT. She said that even more disturbing are reports that these young people often face discrimination and, at times, physical assault in some of the very places they have to go to for help. The idea behind the 30-bed facility, which is on West 154th Street near Frederick Douglass Boulevard in the Harlem area, was conceived by Lauper, her manager and the West End Intergenerational Residence, a non-profit group that provides housing and support for homeless families and seniors. The True Colors Residence will be the first permanent housing facility in New York for homeless LGBT youth. H Continues on NEWS on Page 11

Perry Equates Homosexuality to Alcoholism NEW YORK, NY – Time Magazine has reported that in Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry’s first book, “On My Honor,” Perry equates homosexuality to alcoholism. “Even if an alcoholic is powerless over alcohol once it enters his body, he still makes a choice to drink,” he wrote. “And, even if someone is attracted to a person of the same sex, he or she still makes a choice to engage in sexual activity with someone of the same gender.” Perry also wrote that he is “no expert on the ‘nature versus nurture’ debate,” but that gays should simply choose abstinence. Perry’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment on whether he maintains this view, but the candidate has either reversed his stance or refused to comment on several other issues he wrote about in his book. State Representative Admits Giving a Teen Boy Money for an Encounter INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Indian State Representative Phil Hinkle admitted last week that he paid a young man $80 to have a good time, but insisted he isn’t gay and doesn’t know why he did it. According to the Indianapolis Star, Hinkle has been stripped of his committee chairmanships and, despite pressure from the Speaker of House to resign, he will not do so. But he also said that he will not seek re-election. Hinkle maintains that he did nothing illegal, there was no sex involved and that he himself was a victim of a crime, but would not file a police report. H

NOM Links Homosexuality to Pedophilia WASHINGTON, D.C. – Twice last week, the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) claimed there was a link between pedophilia and homosexuality. According to Equality Matters, NOM posted on their blog that the effort to normalize pedophilia is following the same pattern as the effort to normalize and legalize same-sex marriages. H

Wilton Manners? When we are raised, we are taught good manners (i.e., don’t talk with your mouth full, always say please and thank you, cover your mouth when you sneeze, say ‘pardon’ not ‘what’ when you mishear something and so on). As we move into adulthood, mostly these stick with us and we develop a new moral code above and beyond gracious manners. Opening the door for your date, offering a seat, signing our emails off with a polite ‘best regards’ or ‘many thanks,’ smiling when you say hello, remembering people’s names, etc. It makes society and community much nicer places to be when people are polite and have good manners. We have been all been in the same position as my dead friend. He met a lovely guy and they clicked on every level on their first date. They arranged the second date with excitement, that butterfly feeling you get when you realize that you like someone. My friend called the night before their second date and left a message. Nothing. Called the following morning. Nothing. Spent the whole day waiting for a call, only to receive a pathetic excuse-laden email at 9:15pm on the evening of the date. Besides being an incredibly typical story we have all heard before, it is also simply bad manners. So, how is it that grown men have lost that moral code which states you must call someone to cancel an arrangement? Whatever the list of ridiculous reasons you have, it is irrelevant and beyond unacceptable to leave someone hanging till 9:15pm on the evening of a date and cancel through email! Now the level of bad manners in the situation is not only the late cancellation, but the use of email. Seriously, pick up the phone! Now that we have communication literally at our fingertips, we email, message or text a cancellation, rather than braving a confrontation and picking up the phone to tell the person you won’t be able to make it. It seems so many people in the community would rather forego manners to save the

potential of a confrontation. A date is one thing, but then there is that huge complaint when arranging the infamous hook up! How many times have you made an arrangement, just to have the person not turn up, that moment when you call the number and its off or that irritating ‘The number you are calling can’t be reached’? It can’t be reached because the guy has no manners. Then, of course, there is that situation where one goes to the designated meeting point and you see the person you are supposed to meet and decide they aren’t your type. Yet, instead of politely going up and saying, ‘thanks but no thanks,’ you switch off your phone and go the other way. Again, bad manners rather than face an awkward situation.

When one looks around the community, you see bad manners in so many places. At a bar, there is pushing and shoving. I remember a few weeks ago being in a bar patiently waiting in line to get a drink. As I approached the bar to order my drink, some little tragic tartlet pushed past me and placed an order. When I politely explained I was first, his response was to blatantly ignore me. Unsurprising for someone with bad manners, so I turned to the barman, who was already making his drink. Once the offending

Letters to the Editor In response to Cross-Eyed by AJ Cross, “Open Relationship Versus Open Heart” in the Florida Agenda, August 18, 2011. DEAR AJ CROSS, With regard to your column in the August 18th edition of the Florida Agenda, let me relate my experience with an open relationship: I have been in an open relationship with my partner of 26 years for about 24 years. It began while I was working, on international travel a lot, and our separation occurred regularly. We never were apart for more than three weeks, but opportunities for sex and quality time (drinking/dancing/eating/touring) with other guys still occurred during our separations. Since we were both secure in our relationship, we talked about our situation and came up with a set of guidelines for ourselves. While they may not work for everyone, they have been very helpful for us. 1. Be honest and talk openly about everything we do. 2. Recognize that “sex” and “love” are not necessarily the same.

Alex Vaughn little toad had left, a group of guys sitting to my left told me how appalled they were by his bad manners; the bartender joined in saying how shocked he was. I called him out on it and the fact that he had made the drink knowing I was first. His response, ‘Oh he is a troublesome one; it’s not worth the scene’. He got away with being a moron because people don’t hold manners in high regard anymore. While I was researching this piece, I noted that causing a scene was also considered bad manners, so for the sake of argument I shall give the aforementioned bartender the benefit of the doubt. Speaking of scenes, however, take your mind back a week or so. Undoubtedly, you have seen one in the community, some over dramatic explosion of passion, anger and Jaegermeister! Another manner that should be remembered is mobile phone etiquette. Now, I will admit I am most guilty of bad manners in this area. I answer my phone at all times (don’t have it on in the theatre or movies though – I’m not that bad) and the worst is when I’m in Starbucks. More often than not, I forget to put my call on hold while ordering or paying, remaining instead yelling down the phone assuming everyone wants to hear whatever drama I have concocted in my life! As a community, if we upped our manners considerably it would be a much more pleasant place to be. With a quick visit to our youth, it will be easy to remember our basic manners and apply them to everyone you encounter. I will leave you with one other lesson in manners, despite how painful it can be, especially if the person rambles: Never, ever interrupt a person when they are speaking. It is just plain rude! H

3. Give each person veto power over what the other does. These guidelines have given us a very stable and interesting life. We feel that sex outside the relationship is to be enjoyed. We often have sex together with a third or fourth guy. It’s fun, especially when there are no expectations of something longer lasting. We like to meet new people and don’t feel jealousy when one or the other sees some eye-candy that casually interests him. There are tons of really nice guys in this world and we learn a lot from them and several of them have developed into close friends. We now each have multiple different sex partners per month, mostly at the baths, but also from online contacts. We are, of course, careful with the usual health issues. My partner is younger and has more encounters than I, but we are always amazed at the hot guys who actually prefer older men. The fact that we hook up with others encourages us to keep physically fit and active. What you quickly find, after a short while, is that no one is perfect, no matter how hunky or rich. The leading quality we look for in others is their willingness to have a

Who Knew? Talking Dirty: How to Negotiate Safe Sex By SAM KNEW, MSW make the conversation even more difficult throwing alcohol and drugs into the mix. Needless to say, our inhibitions and judgment are impaired with either. Studies report that 60% of STDs are transmitted when the partners are under the influence. Not to mention the numerous sexual assaults of women and men which occur while intoxicated. But for all of the alternatives offered, there’s no substitute for the real thing. Having a direct conversation with your partner can eliminate a lot of dancing around the issue – and can actually make your sexual experience a more pleasant, worry-free one. Starting the conversation doesn’t have to be embarrassing or uncomfortable. You could start by offering your own status or preference, like “I’m STD free,” or “I only use condoms”. What you do want to avoid, though, are vague and uncommitted statements like, “I prefer condoms” or “could we use a condom?” This might give your partner the misconception that safe sex is an option – when it clearly isn’t. Long before tangled bed sheets, before the first kiss, before cocktails or a promising “hello,” there’s a cosmic element that draws two people together – one that may not require any words at all. But who knew it may be what you aren’t saying that’s costing you your health – and maybe your life? In the heat of passion, it isn’t always easy to ask your partner about their sexual history or health status. And the end result can be one of the 12 million new sexually transmitted infections (STI) reported each year. Oddly enough, in an era where condoms are passed out in schools and shopping centers and sex is used to sell everything from

bottled water to dental plans, it’s a wonder that so many of us have trouble talking about sex. But for those who enjoy a little verbal foreplay, choosing your words carefully can make the issues of protection a non-issue. By incorporating the mention of condoms and other types of barriers into your “flirt dialog,” you can set a precedent that tells your partner what’s expected. If words escape you in the heat of the moment, there are a few options that may make it a little easier to negotiate the terms of engagement. Consider getting creative – using your mouth to slip on a condom can be a sexual turn on and leaves little to be discussed. However, the passion doesn’t always make its way to bedroom, so you may want to consider placing condoms in other areas around the home – or even car for that matter. The female condom, which is gaining more popularity and approval among gay men, is another safe alternative. One advantage is that the sexual recipient (the bottom) can place the device in place hours before hand and not have to interrupt foreplay placing in the device or bother negotiating safe sex practices with their partner. Of course, like any advice, it’s always easier said than done, and sometimes we can

Ecstasy Could Be Used to Cure Cancer BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND – The Daily Telegraph reported that researchers from Birmingham University claim that the designer drug Ecstasy may one day be used as a cure for cancer after scientists modify the drug to increase its tumor-killing properties. The drug, also known as MDMA, could be used to treat leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma after making it 100 times more effective at suppressing growth. Ecstasy was already known to be effective against more than half of white blood cell cancers, but previously the large dose required to treat a tumor would also have killed the patient. H

HRC President to Resign in 2012 WASHINGTON, D.C. – The co-chairs of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Board of Directors and the HRC Foundation Board announced that HRC President Joe Solmonese has informed the boards he will not renew his contract, which expires March 31, 2012. Solmonese will remain at the helm of the organization until the completion of his contract to ensure a smooth leadership transition. At the same time, the co-chairs announced the formation of a search committee to be co-chaired by board members Joni Madison of Hillsborough, N.C., and Dana Perlman of Los Angeles. “Joe Solmonese is an outstanding leader,” said Anne Fay, who co-chairs the Foundation Board of Directors with Andy Linsky. “While we will miss his extraordinary leadership, we enter this next phase, thanks to Joe, in the best place the organization has ever been. Not only has our community secured historic victories, but our membership is larger and more active than at any time in our history, and our financial health is secure even in these difficult economic times.” “From the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ to the recent passage of marriage equality in New York, Joe has made sure that HRC is an effective and strategic force for positive change,” said Tim Downing, who co-chairs the HRC Board of Directors with Rebecca Tillet. “Over the course of his tenure, he’s set the tone for delivering real reform that matters in peoples’ everyday lives.” “Leading HRC has been an inspiring experience and a complete privilege,” said Solmonese. “I could not be more proud of

our staff, our volunteer leadership and of the extraordinary progress we've made together as a community.” Solmonese’s leadership has taken the organization from 750,000 members and supporters to more than 1,000,000. Additionally, he oversaw significant expansion of HRC’s public education and outreach programs, including the launch of the Healthcare Equality index, a more robust Religion and Faith Program and wider reach and success of the Corporate Equality Index. The HRC Foundation also launched the Welcoming Schools program to address family diversity, gender stereotyping, bullying and name calling in schools, as well as the All Children All Families initiative that helps open up adoption agencies to prospective LGBT parents. The grassroots field operation also expanded – most recently mounting the largest state-level campaign in LGBT movement history resulting in the passage of marriage equality in New York. H

“Word Play” To Poke or Not to Poke By ChriStiAN tAylor-AlExANdEr As an approaching (far too rapidly) 40 year old gay male, I find myself wondering myriad thoughts, ranging from the far reaches of the Galaxy and my place in it to why it is that no matter how many times I sort out my socks, whenever the next batch of laundry is done there always seem to be “single” socks in the bunch. Is there an evil troll in my dryer or do socks, like relationships, just part ways after too much wear and tear? A little too often, I consider what some people are thinking when they get dressed to go out in public (hey … I am gay!!!). As I sit here, alone (as has become the norm) in front of my well-worn keyboard, I have several things floating in and out of my semi-consciousness. As of this moment, I am thinking of the English language and how certain terms have come to be a part of the evergrowing lexicon of communication. Be it from “texting” (which I find so entirely annoying, I had it turned off my cell phone). I have to rant a bit further about this “texting” phenomenon … what happened to just picking up the phone and saying hello? It takes far less time to verbalize your insipid thoughts than it does to sit there, some while driving and downing mocha-chinos, to say “what’s up” than to type the words into those far too small number/letter combinations on most phones! OK, that’s out of my system … felt good. This brings me to “Tweeting” (which I, as something of a techno-phobe, have yet to try). I’m not even sure what exactly it is, I just know that everyone but me – and perhaps my parents – knows how to do it and what it is. For pity’s sake, let me get used to one “latest thing” before they come up with anything else. And last, but certainly not at all least, my beloved Facebook. Ah, Facebook … the perfect way for someone who rarely feels the need to leave the house to have a social life, such as it is. Friends and acquaintances from high school (not always people I would have otherwise sought out, but there they are all the same); others who had simply moved away and fallen out of touch or married or just plain dropped off the face of my little corner of the Earth. To my shock (still gives me the chills), I re-discovered one good friend who I thought was deceased … I kid you not! All things considered, I must admit I am an avid fan of Facebook. There is one term used incessantly on Facebook which, finally (I know, I tend to prattle on until someone stops me) brings me to the point of this: ”POKING”. What the hell is Poking? I’m led to believe it’s a cute little way of letting the people you don’t actually converse with as much as you should – or get to see faceto-face – know that you are thinking of

them. That sounds nice, doesn’t it? Just a quick hello from a friend to let you know someone, somewhere is thinking of you. A little happy thought from an old friend or even a “friend” you’ve never actually met in the flesh. A virtual little nudge from that guy/girl/or somewhere-inbetween person who you can barely remember but are now “friends” with, that you crossed their mind at some point in the day. “Poking,” therefore, would seem like a nice thing then, wouldn’t it? Then, of course, my mind thinks of other definitions of “poking” … the xrated one … let’s just say that poking leads me to think of boinking, which leads me to think about … well, if I have to go into detail, you mustn’t have much of an imagination or no idea of what these terms of which I speak mean. In in either case, go watch TV. Poking, boinking, etc., all lead down a path I’ve traveled many, many, many, many times in the past. Did I mention I used to have an actual sex life? But, here again, that’s another

story that took place long, long ago in a Galaxy somewhere downtown. Now, excluding the aforementioned definitions of “poking” that have come to my deluded mind, I’m left with one more way in which to be poked that would not be so pleasing. As in to be poked with a stick or some blunt object. That would not be at all satisfying (unless you are into that sort of thing … and who am I to judge after all the different ways of “poking” I’ve tried?) I ask you: Do you really want to be poked in this manner on a fairly consistent basis by pretty much the same people? Would you want to, let’s say, be poked in the face by a baseball bat from your Facebook friend in Utah? Personally, I would prefer not to have things poked in my face (let’s just leave that one alone, shall we?). If someone does “poke” you on Facebook, is it rude to not poke them back? The way I figure it, no matter how you look at it, you have to. They took time out of their blogging/video downloading day to poke you, so the least you can do is poke them back in a timely manner. So, I leave it to you to decide if “Poking” is good or just another little evil in the world. If I tune into Facebook tomorrow and find that I have been poked more than usual … I’m not quite sure how I’ll feel about it. Someone please let me know! H

Giving Back is Profitable The Sequel By drEW MillEr It’s that time of year again. Fundraising activities are in full bloom, non-profits are gearing up for their big day in the sun, parties, happy hours and other events are scheduled in the hopes of finding those willing to donate and give back to their community – and we all know someone sponsoring something for their favorite charity. I have given my time and money to many non-profits. As I discussed in my first column about giving back, those organizations include: HRC (Local Chapter), Rainbow Business Coalition (Board of Directors), Gay and Lesbian Business Exchange (Board of Directors), Smartride (Rider), Tuesdays Angels (Rider), The Pride Center at Equality Park (Founder), Broward House (Donation), Business Professional Group (Board of Directors) and AidsWalk (Walker). In that column, I told the story about how I was able to join the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce as the Business Development Director for GLBX because of my involvement with the Board of Directors. In this column, I would like to guide you down the road of Charitable Giving and help you recognize the rewards you

might receive in your life, including friends, colleagues, networking relationships, business opportunities and jobs. When I first started riding my bike for local charities, I discovered how many people I know and work with who shared my interest in riding. As an example, many local business owners are fellow riders and have become clients, networking colleagues and potential clients. My partner, Kevin Murdoch, and I have ridden in the “SmartRide” for 3 years (165 miles from Miami to Key West benefiting HIV/AIDS organizations in Florida). This November, we are doing it again. Earlier this year, we joined the “100% Solution Bike Ride for Life” (220 miles from Las Olas & A1A to Ft. Pierce benefiting “Tuesdays Angels”). I have learned through riding and giving back how mixing charitable work with business colleagues strengthens relationships. Sometimes, the connections you make have a lasting impact on your life, work and career. On the ride to Ft. Pierce, we met Jerry Byers. Jerry is an inspiration to me in my life. He is in his 7th decade and is in incredible shape. I am 43 years old and Jerry, who has ridden 13 times in the

“100% Solution Ride,” not only finished the 220 miles, but did it an hour faster than I did. While riding, Jerry shared this story of his charitable work and how it created profit for his business. He is a general contractor and volunteers for “The Pride Center at Equality Park” by doing their maintenance and repairs. Being a giving individual showed the people around him who he is as a person, as well as giving them a glimpse of his strong character. Because of his continued dedication to “The Pride Center,” he earned 2 large remodeling contracts for prominent community leaders. I know no better example of giving back than Mark Martin and his contribution to “AidsWalk.” Two and a half years ago, Mark volunteered to head up the team, “Club Us”. He led that team to become the largest contributor to the AidsWalk several years running with a grand total of $125,000 to date. His organizational skills, leadership abilities and drive set him apart in our community. Aids Health Foundation was so impressed with Mark Martin and Club Us that when it came to hiring a new Relations & Development Regional Director, the first person they thought of

Back to Black Classic, Classy and Covert – The Best of Black

Gucci Suit • $1,920 www.gucci.com

By ALEX VAUGHN Without question, black is the easiest color to wear. It’s slimming, always classy and, of course, a classic. When a woman doesn’t know what to wear, her safety net is always the little black dress. For us guys, we can follow a similar route: If you have a good black suit, then it will serve you for that business meeting, first date or even just using the blazer with jeans – you will be set for any occasion. James Bond, Zorro and a host of other mysterious men have gone for the all black look. There is a fine line between slick and scary, so pick your pieces wisely. Though black has always been a popular choice for everything, it’s also a great base; you can wear all black and look smart and covert, or use it to show off a black and white jacket, or bold color accessories. It is a totally versatile color.

The only thing to watch out for is shades of black – a shirt and pants where one is faded will undermine any look to the point of looking shabby. Also, when working with black, it is always best to invest in pieces – classics if you will. They will stand you in good stead and act as an investment in upping your style credo! A good suit, like the Gucci, will, with the right care, last as long as you fit in it. A simple black t-shirt is a necessity, as is a good belt, and a well maintained black shirt. Another warning when wearing all black is make sure you wear it with a relaxed attitude, or you will come across as a bit too gothic! These are a selection of some of the hottest black pieces out in stores right now! H

The Field Irish Pub & Eatery “Sometimes you just need to get off the beaten path.” By TIM SLIVINKSI Most of us in the area are well-aware and well-acquainted with the usual dining destinations around town. We can head to Las Olas, maybe check out the beachfront, stroll Wilton Drive or head to South Beach. But there are some other amazing and long-established restaurants that are tucked away in unknown areas along less obvious streets. One recent evening, some good friends suggested just such a place to my partner and me. After a quick drive down I-95 to Griffin Road, we soon pulled in to The Field. If you are not sure where it is, a large Publix is just across the road, and the front of the pub is anchored by a very large banyan tree that is over 100 years old. While there are other so-called pubs in the area, the Field is the real deal and it makes no pretense about being anything other than that — and the place is all the better for it. There are outdoor seating areas along the front and a spacious side patio that, in less humid weather, would be extremely inviting. As you enter the field, it’s almost like entering someone’s farmhouse. Wood predominates the venue in the rustic wooden tables and benches. Old wooden barrels have found a second life as cocktail tables. The bar is rustic, weathered and wooden. The floors, too, tap-tap as your shoes cross the well-worn

jean’s kitchen

wood. An amazing collection of antiques and memorabilia line the walls. Somehow, it all works together to create an inviting, cozy, intimate environment while at the same time lending itself to a great birthday gathering with good friends. Once we were seated in the spacious dining area, three in the group began to discuss — in true Irish pub fashion — which beers to order. When Steph, our most gracious and charming server, arrived, she was well-versed in helping to pick out just the right selections, even offering to bring a taste of one of the beers to the table to help ease the decision. Once everyone had selected a beer (I chose a cocktail), it was time to consider our growling stomachs. As you might expect, much of the fare reflects traditional dishes from across the Atlantic. But if Irish or English pub fare is not your palate, never fear as the Field also offers more traditional entrees, salads, sandwiches and burgers. Feeling very taken in by the pub atmosphere, we decided to focus on pub-style food. My partner opted for stuffed cabbage rolls, I selected fish and chips, one friend decided on chicken pot pie and the other chose a feature called drunken chicken. Deciding we wanted a little something to get us started before our entrees arrived, we ordered

Gazpacho

Gazpacho is a cold Spanish tomatobased raw vegetable soup, originating in the southern region of Andalusia. It is widely consumed throughout Spain and neighboring Portugal and parts of Latin America. Gazpacho is mostly consumed during the summer months, due to its cold temperature and acidic bite. This soup has ancient roots; there are a number of theories of its origin, including as an Arab soup of bread, olive oil, water and garlic that arrived in Spain with the Moors. Once in Spain, it became a part of Andalusia cuisine, using stale bread, garlic, olive oil, salt and vinegar. Gazpacho remained popular with field hands as a way to cool off during the summer and to use these available ingredients. There are many modern variations of gazpacho, often in different colors and omitting the tomatoes and bread in favor of avocados, cucumbers, parsley, watermelon, grapes, meat stock, seafood and other ingredients. It’s so easy to add to, taste and basically play around with the different flavors, so the following is a typical method of preparing gazpacho and, as I always say, you are the chef ! Traditionally, gazpacho is made by pounding the vegetables using a mortar and pestle. This method is only for people who are cave-men or who don’t have a blender. The vegetables are washed and the

tomatoes, garlic and onions are peeled. All the vegetables and herbs are chopped and puréed in a blender or food processor until liquid, or pounded with a mortar (for the cave-men) depending on the desired consistency. The soaked bread is then added, you can also use breadcrumbs. Chilled water, olive oil, Balsamic vinegar and salt are then added to taste. Garnishes may be made with fresh bell pepper slices, diced tomatoes and cucumber, a sprig of fresh basil or other fresh ingredients. Enjoy, it’s burstin’ with flavor and vitamins! H

some steamed mussels as a starter. When Steph placed the steaming mussels in front of us, all eyes widened. We have all eaten steamed mussels, usually in a white wine-garlic-butter sauce. At the Field, the mussels come dripping and swimming in a creamy sauce that is smooth with garlic and thyme, unlike any other sauce we have ever tasted with mussels. The bowl was topped with four generous slices of garlic toast and it did not take us long to dig in. No one complained. The mussels were tender, and the sauce was velvety and savory and oh-so–good. We requested more bread so the remaining sauce would not be wasted. Steph told us that one lady requested a straw for the remaining sauce and then, as she walked away from the table, she could hear the woman slurping through the straw! That’s how good the mussel broth is. When our entrees arrived, everyone was pleased with his own selected dish. My fish and chips were crispy with tender, moist interior. I liked that malt vinegar was brought with the order without my requesting it. My partner’s stuffed cabbage was rich with chopped sirloin, seasoning and rice, and he pronounced them to be just like homemade. The chicken pot pie was crowned by an enormous puff of pastry while the pie itself was chock full

THE FIELD IRISH PUB & EATERY 3281 Griffin Road, Dania Beach, FL 954-964-5979 of large chunks — not processed cubes — of tender chicken. The drunken chicken offered a sautéed boneless breast in an Irish Whiskey sauce and a comforting dollop of mashed potatoes. We were all busy eating and busy getting full. In addition to a great pub atmosphere, delicious food and friendly, helpful service, the Field also offers live entertainment on select nights. On the night we were enjoying ourselves, a young man named Paul Baker was paying acoustic guitar and singing a mixture of originals and covers. It was pleasant and not at all overpowering. Quite simply, we loved the Field and cannot wait to return. Sometimes you just need to get off the beaten path. H

The Naked Truth!

Popular Fitness Myths That Are Full of Holes By TOM BONANTI

Myth #1: If you want to build mass, cut out the cardio. Aerobic fitness is achieved through regular cardio-vascular training and it is among the most preventative medicines available. What good is having gorgeous muscles if you drop dead of a stroke or heart attack! While building solid lean muscle is important, cardio vascular fitness is essential. And the best way to “pump up” the lungs and heart is by exercising aerobically. According to the International Sports Sciences Association, three to four 30 – 45 minute sessions of cardio per week will definitely help to build cardiovascular fitness. Whether it’s running, swimming, biking, doing the precor or treadmill in the gym, you’ve simply got to do cardio in order to stay healthy and live longer.

Myth #2: I’m hurting, but if I just keep training, I can work through the pain. Only a real horse’s ass or the former governor of California still believes the adage, “No pain, no gain.” This long-running myth can potentially have dangerous effects on your body. There is a difference between pain, and the soreness and discomfort you feel after a really “kick-ass” workout. The latter is called ‘delayed onset of muscle soreness’ and it is a natural reaction to a really tough workout. Stretching, rest, massage and contrasting hot and cold showers can help ease this discomfort. Any indications of real pain (joint sprains and swelling, chest pains and difficulty breathing, etc.) should signal you to see a doctor. Working out with such serious symptoms could cause major damage to your body. See a physician as soon as possible.

Myth #3: I can only get “big” if I take the latest, most expensive supplements and steroids. Just because a prominent bodybuilder is pitching a particular supplement or pro-hormone in one of the muscle rags does not mean that you need to buy it or use it. You can achieve greatness in

“muscle-dom” by working hard in the gym, eating healthy and clean, and getting enough quality rest between workouts. Always consult a doctor before taking any supplement and, by all means (especially for guys over 40), have your testosterone levels checked.

Myths #4: Drinking enough water during exercise is not important; in fact it can cause cramps. Drinking enough water during workouts is vital. Most of us never get enough water. You need water throughout the day, especially before, during and after a workout or other physical activity. Lack of water can lead to headaches, fatigue, body aches – and even death! The International Sports Sciences Association recommends 8-12 glasses of water per day. On strenuous workout days, drink 16 ounces of water for every pound lost during exercise. If you’ve got questions about your fitness routine, please send an email to TrainerTomB@aol.com today! H

I have been working out all my life. In that time, I have read a lot, heard a lot and I’ve seen everything. Everyone has an opinion about how to bulk up, cut up and trim down. Some of this information has proved invaluable; some of it is pure bull. Let’s look at some common myths that just may be holding you back and/or even totally derailing your workouts.

HOME

FLORIDAAGENDA.COM

What Is Home? By MICHAEL FRENCH

There are few emotions more compelling than the feeling of “going home”. “Home” has a particular meaning to each of us. Home is more than the four walls where you rest, sleep, recharge your spirit and body. It’s where you work, play and where you feel you belong. “Home” immediately conjures up the image of a safe haven, bringing to the surface feelings akin to what the womb must have felt like – warm, secure, cared for, and a sense of belonging to something greater than oneself. I was, and still am, privileged, because I live, work and play where I call “home”. For people who cannot imagine – or better yet, live in – such a place, there is an elusive yearning – a “homeless” feeling, like a ship that sails the seas with no charted course, floating aimlessly, never finding a harbor in which to drop its anchor; or a bird flying over an endless

sea searching for a place to nest but not finding one. I love to travel for the exhilarating sense of discovery, expanding my horizons, meeting interesting people and the anonymity it provides. There remains, though, just under the surface of all that excitement, the comfort of knowing I have a place to call “home!” and I look forward to returning there. No matter how many times I have seen the sparkling azure coast of South Florida from a plane window, I still feel that comforting warmth in my heart, because I know I’m home. I strain my eyes and wrench my neck trying to spot my house, office, favorite beach, friends’ houses, or even where I get my groceries – all familiar places, with people in them who I’m looking forward to seeing. It’s a satisfying recognition that the small boy within me is still very alive and in need of that kind of reassurance. “Home is where the heart is,” as the saying goes. That is why even, as we move on to allegedly bigger and better things – careers, marriage, etc., the longing for one’s childhood “home” persists. One could be “houseless,” but as long as we are fortunate enough to have people around us – embrace us with nourishing support and love – we are never homeless. Actually, in the dark winters of our lives, many of us

continue to draw strength from our young formative years; and in the twilight of our years, when our memory becomes as capricious as the weather, memories of “home” remain as if they happened yesterday. When I turn the knob to my front door and open it, my dogs, all four of them, tails wagging like metronomes out of control, rush to greet me with genuine happiness as if I had been away for years instead of a few days or weeks. The magazines are still exactly where I left them, as are the few things I forgot to bring with me. The scent of patchouli incense I habitually burn still lingers in the air. Then, as I walk past the wall with so many photos of times gone by, together with family and friends, I instantly feel safe, secure and loved. I pause for a moment, say “hello” to all of them, and, with a huge involuntary smile, think “It’s good to be “home!” It’s very clear that “home” has little to do with structure, bricks and mortar or the “stuff ” we fill it with. The often inexplicable feeling of “home” has everything to do with the spirit which lives there. H
