HEADDRESS BALL

So Says Oklahoma State Rep. Sally Kern Oklahoma State Rep. Sally Kern chose to continue her history of making outrageously inflammatory and hateful comments towards the Gay community on the eve of the 10th Anniversary of 9/11. As the world reflected 9/11, the worst terrorist attacks on US soil, she used the opportunity to claim that gay love is in fact worse than terrorism. Kern explained that her current book titled “The Stoning of Sally Kern: The Liberal Attack on Christian Conservatism and Why We Must Take a Stand” was written in response to the backlash she received in 2008 as a result of her attacks on the gay community with similarly hateful statements in a nationally-released video. Kern had expressed that school children were being “indoctrinated” into the gay lifestyle, and that “studies show that no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted more than a few

decades.” “[Gays] are the death knell, in this country. I honestly think it’s the biggest threat… that our nation has, even more so than terrorism, or Islam, which I think is a big threat,” Kern was recorded in her speech. Now, in an interview with anti-gay activist Peter LaBarbera, Kern explained, “In the last… fifteen to twenty years, we’ve had maybe three terrorist attacks on our soil with a little over 5,000 people regrettably losing their lives. In the same time frame, there have been hundreds of thousands who have died because of having AIDS. So which one’s the biggest threat?” “Which has destroyed and ended the life of more people? Terrorism attacks here in America or HIV/AIDS?” she asked. She then went on to say that in addition to HIV/AIDS deaths, homosexuality is more dangerous than terrorism because people hear about it everyday, as if talking

The City of Oakland Park will be holding its 7th annual Oktoberfest on Friday and Saturday, September 30 (5 p.m. to 11 p.m.) and October 1 (1 p.m. to 11 p.m.) at Jaco Pastorius Park on North Dixie Highway and N.E.38 Street. Oakland Park’s Oktoberfest is not only the largest in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties, but it has also become one of the most popular in Florida. “Everything about our event is as authentic as possible, from the food and the beer to the bands performing traditional Oktoberfest party music,” said Siegi Constantine, Executive Director of Oakland Park Main Street. “We fly the Oktoberfest beer in from Munich so we have the real stuff. Our event has always been branded as an Authentic Bavarian Oktoberfest so everything about it is authentic as possible.” Ambry Restaurant (located on Commercial Boulevard) will operate the Bavarian-style “Biergarten” at

Oktoberfest offering a selection of popular German favorites such as bratwurst, knockwurst, sauerkraut, Black Forrest Cherry Cake, German potato salad and apple strudel along with a selection of German wines. “We try to stick with authentic German food,” said Constantine, “but we have loosened it a little bit. We now have chicken fingers and roasted corn because not everybody likes German food – especially kids. But we do not allow hot dogs or hamburgers.” Large tents will be set up to replicate the authentic atmosphere of a Bavarian village celebration including a stage and dance floor. “We have increased our entertainment budget to book several of the best authentic Oktoberfest bands in Florida,” said Constantine. Included in the entertainment schedule will be performances by Edelweiss Schuhplattlers, a children’s dance ‘OKTOBERFEST’ continues on Page 12

Mayor Declares: “Oakland Park: A City on the Move” OAKLAND PARK, FL – In a written statement, Oakland Park Mayor Suzanne Boisvenue stated that despite the challenging economic times the country is facing and the collapse of the real estate market, the city of Oakland Park and its elected officials believe that the city is adhering to a “vision which will continue to improve the community and spark a rebirth of the downtown district and surrounding areas.” Boisvenue contends that the city’s officials and residents are enthusiastic about the Oakland Park Redevelopment Agency (CRA) which emphasizes five main aspirations: downtown redevelopment, connections to the downtown district, strengthening neighborhoods, increasing green space and increasing attainable housing opportunities. The statement also confirmed that city has secured more than $30 million in funding for capital improvement projects over the past ten years. “I recall how Oakland Park was synonymous with flooding for many years and it seemed like staff had to provide

sandbags every time it rained,” said Boisvenue. “During the past few rainy seasons, our streets and neighborhoods have been dry and free of flooding due to the many successful drainage projects. It is incredible to walk into our new downtown Jaco Pastorius Park and see thousands of people enjoying the Oktoberfest or the PrideFest celebrations where nearly 9,000 people attended.” Gary Lanham is one of the new business owners and credited the city staff for allowing a rapid permitting process, approval and move-in to become operational quickly. Lanham’s business joins the ongoing revitalization taking place in Oakland Park, bringing jobs and retail traffic to the downtown district. “I live in The Corals neighborhood,” notes Lanham who has also served as president of his neighborhood association. “I selected Main Street because of the continued ease of doing business in Oakland Park.” The city has recently acquired an old shopping center on the corner of N.E. 12 Avenue and N.E. 38 Street with plans to turn the property into a landscaped parking lot and the plans for G Resort to build on the old Gibby’s Restaurant property continues to move forward. “We continue to transform our downtown into a walkable, workable and enjoyable destination where we welcome everyone,” concluded Boisvenue. “We see our downtown district as a vibrant and compact urban area that will foster smart growth and stimulate continued economic development.” H

State Fair Goers: Don’t Ban Gay Marriage ST. PAUL, MN – The Minnesota House of Representatives State Fair Poll surveyed a record number of fairgoers on how they felt about a number of issues. The most dramatic finding in the survey was the question about the constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage, which will be included on the ballot on Election Day 2012. The survey’s question read: “Should the state constitution be amended to define marriage as ‘only a union of one man and one woman?’ This question will be on the November 2012 ballot.” Some 8,300 people, or 66.5% of those surveyed, voted against the exact language that will appear on the 2012 ballot. About 30 percent voted yes, and less than 4 percent had no opinion. A record 12,549 Minnesotans voted in this year’s straw poll. H

Student Expelled for Coming Out DOBBS FERRY, NY – When the administration of The Masters School found out that honor student Rachel Aviles was a lesbian, Aviles claims the school gave her the choice of either quitting the school or getting expelled. A popular student and senior, Aviles is said to have maintained a high grade point average and participated in many extracurricular activities. Though many of her fellow students knew that Aviles was a lesbian, the school’s administrators and teachers did not become aware of the fact until a class trip last spring. During the trip, Aviles and another girl pretended to be a married couple and held hands. When questioned about her sexual orientation in the headmaster’s office, Aviles admitted to administrators that she was gay. Despite the fact that many students and teachers came to Aviles defense, she was expelled from The Masters School. H

Blood Donor Ban on Gay Men to be Lifted in U.K. LONDON, ENGLAND – The BBC has reported that the lifetime ban on blood donations by homosexual and bisexual men will be lifted in England, Scotland and Wales. Ministers have agreed to let men who have not had sex with another man in the past twelve months to donate starting in November. The restrictions were originally put in place in the 1980s to prevent the risk of HIV contamination. However, the latest medical evidence presented to a government panel argued the ban could no longer be justified. Ministers in the three countries accepted the argument and said they would soon be relaxing the rules. Northern Ireland is expected to make a decision soon. The National Blood Service screens all donations for HIV and other infections. However, there is a “window period” after infection during which it is impossible to detect the virus. H

Medicare Steps Up Enforcement of Visitation Rights for Gay Partners WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced new guidelines to support enforcement of rules that protect hospital patients’ right to choose their own visitors during a hospital stay, including a visitor who is a same-sex domestic partner. These rules, finalized by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in November, apply to all hospitals that participate in Medicare and Medicaid. The guidelines also supports enforcement of the right of patients to designate the person of their choice, including a same-sex partner, to make medical decisions on their behalf should they become incapacitated. The rules updated the Conditions of Participation (CoPs), which are the health and safety standards all Medicare and Medicaid participating hospitals and critical access hospitals must meet. The updated rules apply to all patients of those hospitals even if they are not on Medicare or Medicaid. Among other things, the CoPs require hospitals to explain to all patients their right to choose who may visit them during their inpatient stay, regardless of whether the visitor is a family member, a spouse, a domestic partner (including a same-sex domestic partner), or another type of visitor, as well as their right to withdraw such consent to visitation at any time. Court: Arizona Same-Sex Partners Entitled to Benefits TUCSON, AZ – Arizona must continue to provide health-care benefits to the partners of gay and lesbian government workers, according to the Tucson Citizen. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a temporary injunction from a lower court that blocked a 2009 state law eliminating health-insurance coverage for same-sex partners of state employees from taking effect. In its unanimous ruling, a three-judge panel of the appellate court noted that the state is not obligated to provide health-care benefits but said denying them to a specific group of employees violates the equal-protection provisions of the U.S. Constitution. NBC Developing “Lesbo” Sitcom BURBANK, CA – According to Deadline Hollywood, NBC has ordered a pilot for the half-hour comedy “My Best Friend is a Lesbo.” The project, from Warner Brothers TV and Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s studio-based Fake Empire, is about two best female friends--one straight, the other gay--who become roommates and help each other navigate life, love, and dating in Los Angeles. Episcopal Bishop Who Ordained Gay Deacon Dies PITTSBURGH, PA – Walter C. Righter, a retired Episcopal bishop of Iowa who was absolved of heresy charges after ordaining a non-celibate gay man as a deacon in 1990, died Sunday at his home outside Pittsburgh after a long illness. He was 87. In 1990, Righter ordained Barry Stopfel, whom he knew to be gay, as a deacon, a rank below that of priest. The next year Stopfel was ordained as a priest. Church conservatives focused their outrage on Righter but did not file formal charges against him until 1995, when a five-year statute of limitations was set to expire. He was tried in 1996 by a panel of eight bishops, who, in voting 7 to 1 to dismiss the heresy charges, ruled that there was no church doctrine forbidding the ordination of gays and lesbians who are in a committed relationship. In 1997, the church's triennial General Convention issued an unusual apology to lesbians and gay men for “years of rejection and maltreatment by the church.” Although the church continues to struggle with issues involving the full inclusion of homosexuals, it ordained its first openly gay bishop — New Hampshire Bishop Gene Robinson — in 2003. In a statement Monday on Righter's death, Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori said: “His ministry will be remembered for his pastoral heart and his steadfast willingness to help the church move beyond old prejudices into new possibilities.” Righter wrote in his memoir that in ordaining a gay deacon he was not trying to make a revolutionary statement. "I was, instead, agreeing to ordain a person who had met all the tests every other person is expected to meet before ordination. In a sense, it was more than time for this ordination to occur, honestly and publicly." In addition to his wife, Righter is survived a brother, four children and four grandchildren. H

Missoni Line Crashes Site MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The much-anticipated launch of a new collaborative line between Italian designer Missoni and Target caused the megaretailer's website to crash several times Tuesday. “Target.com is seeing greater item demand than we do on a typical Black Friday, and the excitement for this limitedtime designer collection is unprecedented,” the store said in a statement. “We are slowly bringing the site back online to ensure we can provide a positive shopping experience to our guests.” The fervor wasn't only online. At stores nationwide, customers eager to grab up the colorful zigzag designs began lining up hours before opening. Stores reported selling out of stock within hours as shoppers grabbed up clothing and home wares at deeply discounted prices. Target has collaborated with other designers before, from Isaac Mizrahi to Jean Paul Gaultier, but none to this effect. The collection was scheduled to be available from September 13 through October 22 at Target stores and Target.com. It was unclear how Tuesday's activity would affect future sales. H

Unprotected Sex –More Likely for Young Gay Men CHICAGO, IL – A new study has found that gay young men, who are in a serious relationship, are six times more likely to have unprotected sex than those who hook up with casual partners. The findings by new Northwestern Medicine provide a new direction for prevention efforts in this population who account for nearly 70 per cent of all new HIV/AIDS diagnoses in adolescents and young adults. “Being in a serious relationship provides a number of mental and physical health benefits, but it also increases behaviors that put you at risk for HIV transmission,” Brian Mustanski, associate professor in medical social sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and lead author of a paper on the research, said. “Men who believe a relationship is serious mistakenly think they don't need to protect themselves,” he stated. About 80 percent of gay young men who are HIV positive don't know it, because they aren't being tested frequently enough, he noted. “It isn't enough to ask your partner his HIV status. Instead, both people in a serious, monogamous couple relationship should go and receive at least two HIV tests before deciding to stop using condoms,” Mustanski said. The Northwestern study looked at the behaviours of a diverse population of 122 young men (16 to 20 years old when the study began) over two years in Chicago and the suburbs. The men are a subset of participants in Mustanski's ongoing longitudinal study on the sexual and mental health of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth. The study has been published online in the journal Health Psychology. H

OPINION

The Other Blue Pill protection will not exist if one only pops a pill before hitting the hay. In addition, the studies indicate that the best role for this pill is in relationships that are serodiscordant. Meaning one partner has HIV and the other doesn’t. In this situation, adherence is more likely as there is a strong mutual desire for protection. Furthermore Truvada is not something you can pick up from a buddy with a party supply kit. It simply won’t work. You need to consult with an HIV specialist and determine whether it is for you, while noting that this is not a 100% protection against HIV. Sex, as pleasurable as it is, comes with

other risks, syphilis, HEP and a host of nearly 12 million other STDS. Truvada doesn’t protect you from any of these. Only condoms will. This is undoubtedly a great step forward and an amazing change to the landscape of sexual interaction between partners of mismatched status. In addition with the hope that it remains successful, it will help breakdown prejudices towards HIV+ people. That said, the danger of unleashing such a powerful statement into the community is astronomical. The reality is that the warnings are going to get lost in the simple message of “one little pill for HIV protection.” There will be many responsible people who will research, try, test and get to grips with this pill. There are more who will breathe a sigh of relief and pop a pill before they do the deed and think nothing of it. This will also go a step to downgrade HIV further, from a dangerous and life threatening disease with potential complications to a totally manageable disease. After all, how bad can it be if you can prevent it with a little blue pill? The real danger is that this disease will no longer be seen as manageable with side effects, but rather as no big deal at all.

It really encompassed the feeling of the nation, we do remember and I really enjoyed the theme of the paper. It was nice to remember without anger or force or hate, but just taking time to reflect on an event that changed the world. Your editorial took me on a journey that showed how someone else remembered in a different part of the world. All our remembrance is focused on US soil, it’s great to be reminded that the events of 9/11 shook the

There is a new blue pill that is set to revolutionize our attitudes towards HIV and safe sex. I’d even go as far as to say that this pill will make us question the entire idea of sexual responsibility. The pill is Truvada PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) and it is already available in a pharmacy near you. Truvada has been widely used in the treatment of HIV positive individuals. However, as early as this year, the FDA is poised to approve the drug as a means to prevent infection. The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) already have in place a set of guidelines for using this pill as a prevention method against HIV. In theory, this little blue pill has the potential to do as much harm as good, just like Viagra has. Of course with Viagra the situation is markedly different. As with all medications, Viagra comes with side effects and warning labels. It isn’t, or shouldn’t be, a daily pill. There is no regime to be followed. There is also a completely different mindset attached to it. Viagra is not a preventative health aide; Truvada is. The studies shown to determine the effectiveness of the pill as a preventative method were favorable, obviously leading to the FDA’s considerations. The variables and conditions to its success, however, are many and they are all relevant. The fear of course is those concerns will fall to the wayside when we are discussing the simplicity of one blue pill to protect you from the worst contagious disease affecting the community and the world. When taken daily, Truvada had been shown to be 95% effective at preventing infection with HIV. Those who did become infected during the trial period were shown to not have enough of the drug in their systems indicating that these subjects did not adhere to the daily regime. The study has clearly shown that one must be completely strict with the one-aday regime. Unlike Viagra, Truvada is not a “pop it on the weekend” sort of recreational drug. It is a lifestyle choice. With multiple partners and promiscuity,

As HIV infections continue to rise in Florida, the need for prevention is undoubtedly present and the message needs to be loud and clear. Though the study was quick to indicate that condoms were offered free of charge and that their use in studies had increased, the reality is who will bear that in mind. If you are less than strict with your condom use, are you really going to become more stringent when you know you’ve popped a pill? This “pop a pill” mentality is found not only within the community, but in the nation as a whole. You can’t watch TV for more that 20 seconds before some pill is being advertised, for something or other, from depression to restless leg syndrome. Add the prospect of another pill, and it doesn’t faze or frighten everyone. It, in fact, makes life so much easier. Why worry about condoms or status when you just need to remember to pop a little pill everyday? The flip side is that despite the fact that you are not sick, you are providing your body with a medication to which it may react badly, and all to avoid a condom? There is also the question of what happens if you do maintain the treatment, yet still fall into the 5% that contract the virus anyway. Have you screwed yourself ? Will your body have built a tolerance to one of the most widely used treatments for HIV? It has been noted by the study’s doctors that resistance cannot develop with the use of this pill since actual infection has not taken place. However condoms remain the main protector. Unfortunately, at the same time, the same doctors noted that many people had already stopped using condoms. Truvada would offer another protection route. The coverage of one-a-day medications complete with the shiny happy people on the HIV medication adverts suggests that life goes on. This has allowed a generation who never experienced the 80’s to have a blasé attitude to the disease. The real danger is that lost amid the excitement of the availability of Truvada, the horror of AIDS will be forgotten. H

Who Knew? Forgiveness: The Gift You Give Yourself By SAM KNEW, MSW

So if revenge is a dish best served cold, at what temperature do you forgive? As a rule of thumb, allowing yourself some cooling off time is always best, but what happens when the heat of your emotions never seems to cool? Forgiveness is definitely one of those things that is easier said than done. For multiple reasons, holding on to the pain that others in our lives have caused us is easier than taking the emotional and challenging steps towards releasing it. This appears to be even more true for men. Studies find that men generally have a more difficult time forgiving. The consequences include higher risk of heart disease, increased blood pressure, and depression. The increased risk of holding these grudges

seem like common sense to most, so why is it so many people struggle with it? One reason is how we each define “forgiveness.” For starters, forgiveness is not about the people in our lives who have hurt us. Forgiveness is a gift we give ourselves, and by accepting that truth, we may find ourselves more willing to take on the challenge. As with most challenges, when the choice to overcome them comes from within (versus an outside source, such as a family member, friend or a counselor), the effort put out is usually greater. Additionally, this self-determining action can make the process more beneficial than the actual outcome, which once again emphasizes the true beneficiary of forgiveness. But making up our minds to let go of the past is just the start of this journey. The next step is to implement our decision. In some cases, individuals are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to confront their past in-person. In these cases, it’s important to remember to address your own feelings and thoughts about the situation. Using “I” statements is a great way of doing this, such as, “I really felt betrayed when you…” For

many, this may prove the most difficult task. Individuals may feel foolish and uncomfortable exposing their emotions. But the pay off (regardless of the outcome) is worth it. In cases that have created serious selfdoubt within oneself, individuals can see themselves as a victim. This form of self-expression allows a person to take control of a situation and allows victims to transform themselves into survivors. Survivors see the world differently from victims. They have a sense of control and empowerment that victims do not. In other cases, confronting individuals from your past may not always be an option. These individuals may have to find forgiveness on a more emotional and/or spiritual level. One technique is to change your inner dialog, that is, the things you tell yourself. For instance, remind yourself that forgiveness is not about forgetting or condoning past

actions. More importantly, remind yourself what forgiveness is: it’s simply accepting that the past cannot be changed. This is true even when you, yourself, are the person that you have to forgive. Not allowing yourself to be trapped by the “would ‘ya, should ‘ya, could ‘ya” mindset is key. Maya Angelou, one of today’s great poets, best-selling author and activist, may have said it best, “I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better.” H

The Downward Spiral By ChriStiAN tAylor-AlExANdEr It starts off like any other relationship. A friend probably introduces you and before you know it, there’s magic in the air. A feeling of happiness … the stress and mundane details fade into the background as you and your new acquaintance get to know each other. There’s music in the air, dark smoky lighting encompasses the room … people seem to be more friendly with you now that you are with your new companion. You might find that although you are usually kind of shy at the nightclub/bar, you are now talking to complete strangers. And, you are having the time of your life! A little time passes and that feeling of bliss seems to be fading and your boring old self is coming back to the surface. Ah, but it’s early, and so and so said it was ok … so you and your new “friend” make your way through the crowds to the rest room. There, you and your new “acquaintance” can be alone for a moment. You probably stand there nervously for a few moments, wondering if anyone knows what you are really doing in that bathroom stall. Since you are new to this particular situation, you may not know what to do. In this case, I am speaking of cocaine. Our character dips his car key into that

little plastic zip-lock bag (point to ponder, I understand why they make sandwichsized baggies, but what else did they have in mind for those oh-so-perfect-for-carrying-drugs bags?), pulls out a pile of white powder, carefully balanced so as not to spill any, and inhales some in each nostril as he watched his friend do earlier. Within seconds, he can feel the numbness descending into his body. Within minutes that feeling of bliss begins to return. Maybe a little more so this time, because he did twice the amount as before. Not on purpose, it’s just the way it happened. There are also countless persons who are introduced to other seductive strangers. These people were properly introduced by a trusted doctor. Who would doubt a stranger that promised to help your problems or take your pain away or better help you cope with the things that keep you up at night or make your mind race all day. This new stranger seems perfect. Our doctor’s convince us that if we take this little pill or that little tablet, we will feel better. Our friends coerce us into trying this substance or that, because it will make us feel better. This begs the question, how bad did we feel in the first place? Before you know it (I can’t give you a ‘OKTOBERFEST’ Continued from COVER

precise time frame), but your new “friend” becomes a constant companion. Kids getting on your nerves? Take a pill. Tennis elbow annoying you again? There are pain pills in the cabinet. Going out for the evening and don’t have much energy? Do a few lines. Want to really take a break from reality, drop some acid. It’s OK, everyone else is doing it. “My doctor prescribes them.” “All my friends are doing it.” (Given enough time we can rationalize anything.) As time passes, one of two things can happen. For roughly 8% of the people I have known in my personal life, they are able to put down that drink, flush that cocaine or crystal meth, special K (no relation to the cereal), ecstasy, GHB, acid, Quaaludes (for you party boys in the 70’s) and the rest of the drug alphabet and walk away. My hat’s off to you. The other 92%, don’t always fair so well.

by the people of Munich to honor the marriage of the popular Prince Ludwig and Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen in October, 1810, and became an annual event to celebrate their anniversary. About 8,000 people attended that first Oktoberfest – last year almost 10,000,000 people attended making it the largest single festival in Europe. Beer is a major component of Oktoberfest and only beers brewed in Munich (located in the Bavarian region of Germany) are served at Oktoberfest. Many of the breweries brew a special beer that can only be obtained during Oktoberfest. This beer has a higher alcohol and sugar content making it 2% stronger. Oktoberfest has been held at the same location for 200 years and has only been cancelled 24 times in its history due to war, disease or other emergencies. Every year, the traditional festival opening is done by a twelve gun salute and the tapping of the first keg of Oktoberfest beer at 12:00 noon by the Mayor of Munich with the cry “O' zapft is!” (“It’s tapped!” in the Austro-Bavarian language). The mayor then gives the first beer to the MinisterPresident of the State of Bavaria. Over 7million liters (that’s 1,849,204 gallons) of beer get served during the 16 to 18 day festival. The first Oktoberfest lasted 12 days, starting the first weekend in October. However, the schedule was changed to

I am one of them. As time went by, I found myself growing ever more dependent on anything that would let me forget my life for a while and let me live in my imaginary little world where I actually was happy with who I was (ironically enough, the way I felt before I fell into the pit of addiction). Money started to get tight, I found myself falling asleep at my desk, I started losing contact with people whom I deeply cared about who genuinely cared about me. Everything, however slowly or quickly, WILL fall apart. Addiction is nothing short of a type of cancer. A cancer of the soul. The saddest thing is, all the people who really care about you (who stuck it out) can just stand by and watch you slowly killing yourself. So, with a nod to Nancy Reagan, “Just Say No.” H

troupe, and the Original Auerhahn Schuhplattlers, an adult dance group. The musicians scheduled to fill the air with drinking songs, original oompah and polka dance music until closing each evening include the popular Oktoberfest bands Euro Express and the Swinging Bavarians. “This is our seventh year and we started out with maybe 1,500 people,” said Constantine. “Last year, we drew up to 10,000 people. Last year I insisted that we should hold it over two days and it was a great success.” Through the years, the Oakland Park Oktoberfest has added additional events to make the huge party more fun for the whole family. “I thought, what could we do differently from everybody else?” said Constantine. “Dachshunds are Bavarian dogs so we have a Dachshund race every year called the ‘Dachshund Dash.’ The first year we had 30 some dogs and last year we had 57 of them.” Registration for the Dachshund Dash is currently taking place at the Central Bark Doggie Daycare center on N. Dixie Highway. Some of the other events planned are a Beer Keg Roll and a Beer Stein Race where participants loose points for every drop of beer they spill while racing. The popular Apple Strudel Eating Contest is also returning again this year. “There’s this little kid and he started with us about 5 years ago and I’m sure he’s going to win this year. He always ends up with the apple pastry all over his face.” The first Oktoberfest was a celebration

September, allowing the festival to end on the first weekend in October to take full advantage of the longer and warmer days of September. “The reason we do Oktoberfest,” concluded Constantine, “is that Main Street is about economic development and we partner with the City of Oakland Park in that we’re tasked with marketing the downtown area and promoting the downtown. One of the ways we do it is to bring people downtown. But Oktoberfest has been growing and growing and it has become the number one signature event for the city.” H

about homosexuality somehow destroys a nation. “And you know, every day our young people, adults too, but especially our young people, are bombarded at school, in movies, in music, on TV, in the mall, in magazines, they’re bombarded with ‘homosexuality is normal and natural.’ Fortunately we don’t have to deal with a terrorist attack every day.” She went on to explain, that, “It’s more dangerous, and yes I think that it’s also more dangerous because it will tear down the moral fiber of this nation.” According to Kern, “We were founded as a nation upon the principles of religion and morality. If we take those out from under our society, we will lose what has made us a great nation, we will no longer be a virtuous people, which we see happening already. And without virtue, this nation will not survive.” Her comments have caused uproar and as the recording of her statements went viral, they caught the attention of lesbian talk show host and comedienne Ellen DeGeneres, who made light of the speech by attempting to contact the representative and author on her talk show, with the aim of “clearing up misconceptions” that she may have. She was unable to leave a voicemail. This is not the first time Kern has marginalized and attacked diverse minority groups. Kern was reprimanded earlier this year by the Oklahoma House when she said that African-American people “don’t work as hard” as white people. She also said last April that people of color don’t work hard in school because they think the government will “take care of them.” H

“Legacy” By AJ CROSS What will be your legacy? What will people say of you when you are gone? We spend our lives second-to-second, minute-to-minute, hour-to-hour, and day-by-day. What is the plan for the future? I don't mean immediate. I mean a future that no longer has us in it. What is it all for? The long hours of work, issues, struggles, relationships and triumphs of our lives. Do we live our lives building the foundation of our legacy? Have you thought of what will be left behind and what impact you will make on the world? How will future generations benefit from us? I was thinking that in the attempt to simply live my life I haven't paid much attention to what the memory of me will be for others. I have no idea what my legacy will be. I don't know how quickly I will be forgotten. Maybe thinking of that legacy will change how I move forward. I haven't created anything like the "internet" or biometrics, or a cure for a disease. What will history say about me? What will history say about you? Did Napoleon or Elvis or Bill Gates, or President Obama, or so many others of like impact on the world set out to become great? Were they seeking to be remembered forever or did they live day-

by-day and just stumble into fame and recognition? I think that we should realize that it is possible to have our names written in the stars, to see past the moment we are in, and create an impact that lasts forever. Maybe greatness is possible for us, but not something we are entitled to. I know that I want to leave something good and significant behind. I want to be remembered for something greater than who I was. Find your goal for a legacy and find your place in the sky where your star will shine bright for all eternity. H

There were also accessories that were key pieces in the collection, from black framed geek shades to the fedoras made of canvas and suede. In terms of the color palette of the designs, there were less monochromatic colors and more of grays, reds, burgundies and, of course, black. As far as texture, there was wool, especially in the coats and some pants, velvet and sequins in the suiting, and cotton in the shirts and pants. As you can see, the two designers, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, got our attention for the Fall/Winter 2010/2011 Menswear collection. And, they make us wait impatiently until the next season comes out to see what other surprises they have prepared for us. The collection can be found at any Dolce and Gabbana boutique nationwide, or via the web at www.dolcegabbana.com. H

Dolce & Gabanna is synonymous with high style and classic European flair in the fashion world. The Italian fashion house is known for its extremely fashionable and in-your-face menswear. The name is praised and applauded everywhere you go. Sure enough, for their Fall/Winter 2011 menswear runway collection, the duo did not disappoint. You can always count on Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana to give you haute, sexy, masculine looks with a twist of fun and ruggedness. This year, as the models strutted down the runway, it kind of seemed as if there were looks and styles being presented from the past 20 years. There were looks for everyone in that show: The glamorous club guy in v.i.p., the biker, the street kid, the gangster and the man on Wall Street. There were wide-leg trousers, no-pleat pants and wide lapels on the jackets reminiscent of the 80's. There were also hints of the 90's and today with the fitted Bryan Ferry t-shirts, bleached, acid washed jeans, suspenders, cargos and heavysoled boots. It also appeared the designers incorporated the use of many vintage and olden-days style – one of them being braces (known to many of us today as

Things That Go Cough in the Night “Contagion”

By WARREN DAY the casting is also one of its weaknesses since he wasn’t able to find A-listers for all the major parts, it can be somewhat jarring going from scenes with Damon and Paltrow to a couple of unrecognizable actors with equally sized parts. From the beginning, Soderbergh gives the movie a documentary feel that makes the events seem quite feasible, and since this virus is airborne and highly contagious, he instills a sense of doom in ordinary occurrences – someone coughing on a crowded bus, blowing on dice for luck, two hands reaching into the same peanut bowl. After seeing “Contagion,” you may find yourself scared to touch another doorknob. If you think this film exaggerates what can happen in a pandemic, remember that in 1348, the Black Plague hitchhiked a ride to China with traders (the virus in this film also starts in China), and in just two years 30 to 60% of the population of Europe was wiped out. Less than a hundred years ago, 1918 – 1919, Spanish Flu killed as many as 100 million worldwide, including 675,000 in the USA (my great grandfather was one of those). As this film demonstrates, with people and goods constantly flowing across continents today, what used to take two years to develop can now take place in a single month.

The trouble with this kind of story is where do you go with it? Besides anxiety, what is the audience suppose to feel or think? We’ve always had sound-thealarm movies, but usually they deal with some peril over which we can, if willing, take steps to reduce the threat – proliferation of nuclear weapons, ruining our environment. What can you do against an unknown virus that could already be entering someone’s blood stream, someone who’s about to catch a plane to an airport near where you live? Send any comments or questions to AgendaReviews@aol.com H

Photos courtesy, Warner Bros. Pictures

“Contagion” may be the scariest movie you’ll ever see. Not in a vampire or werewolf kind of way, because deep down you know you’re never going to meet one of those in real life (especially one that looks like Robert Pattinson or Taylor Lautner). What makes director Steven Soderbergh’s latest film so frightening is that it deals with something that not only could happen, but also has actually occurred in the past and is widely predicted to happen again – a new virus that is resistant to all treatment, resulting in millions of deaths. You may jump out of your seat at more traditional scary movies, but this one will probably give you more nightmares. Soderbergh has a talent for gathering a stellar cast, as he did in “Ocean’s 11,” “12” and “13,” and here he does it again. In “Contagion,” the stars include Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Laurence Fishburne. The casting is one of the strengths of the film (no star can play everyman better than Damon, and Fishburne has the gravitas to play the head of a large government agency). Since you have some feelings already for these well-known stars the director doesn’t have to spend much time making you care about what happens to them. But

In Douglas Carter Beane’s comedy “As Bees in Honey Drown,” the Rising Action Theater in Fort Lauderdale has produced one of their best productions and given us one of the best reasons to see current live theater in south Florida. For that to happen, many different variables have to come together in just the right way. First of all is the play itself. You want it to be a really good play, but not one that has been widely available to local theater-goers before or made into a film that can be easily seen on cable or DVD. The Obie winning “As Bees in Honey Drown” certainly fits the bill, providing a sparkling evening of laughs, wise observations, and fascinating characters, a frothy mixture about the dangers of frothy mixtures. It is that rare play where the second act is stronger than the first. Secondly, you want the production to enhance the script, not encumber it. The director Avi Hoffman has an impressive list of credits, giving the play a professional pace and polish, and makes the best utilization of the theater’s space at

Sunshine Cathedral that I’ve seen. The set is also imaginative, with a clever use of ever-changing panels that resemble a honeycomb. Finally, the overall acting is quite good. Four of the six actors play various denizens of Manhattan, and seldom has a local ensemble added so much to the final result. The most effective acting from the beginning to the end belongs to Andrew Wind who plays the young naïve gay writer with a well-received first novel, but who hasn’t set the world on fire, something he desperately wants to do. It’s what he does in small moments that make his acting so memorable, such as the scene where he’s trying on his first expensive suit at Saks. When he stares out into the audience, but is supposed to be gazing into a mirror, you genuinely believe he’s seeing his reflective image. The central character around which the whole story revolves is a daunting figure with the daunting name of Alexa Vere de Vere, a life-force of a woman who’s one part Audrey Hepburn in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” one part Liza Minnelli in “Cabaret,” and a big hunk of Rosalind Russell in “Auntie Mame.”

She’s a glittering con-artist who has the uncanny ability to tell you the very things about yourself that you so desperately want to believe. She perfectly understands that so many of us have become fame whores, either in seeking it for ourselves or by being fascinated by those who have it. Some of the wittiest lines in the play belong to Alexa: “Art is eternal, but eternal isn't as long as it used to be.” “In England everyone is gay, so when you say ‘Queen’ you have to specify.” And what is almost the mantra of the play: “You're not the person you were born. Who wonderful is? You're the person you were meant to be.” This Queen Bee is played by Actor’s Equity member Amy McKenna, who often approaches this larger-than-life role with an over-the-top consonance that lacks the nuance and variety to carry the evening. We reviewers usually see a play in its first or second public performance, so the highly-experienced Ms. McKenna will probably settle into the proper zone for Alexa by the time you see it. It’s part of the richness of Mr. Beane’s delightful comedy that he takes a some-

what familiar character, the AuntieMame type, and shows how destructive such divas can be. From afar, they can be quite entertaining, just the answer to a bland life. But up close they can mess you up in ways that last a long time. And the gullible gay writer is ripe for such manipulation, because he buys into our celebrity-mad culture, and nothing is as vain as the love of fame. It used to be that fame was the indirect result of doing something exceptionally well. But now, it’s often the means and the end, becoming so fashionable that there are those who eagerly buy it even when it’s a rip-off of the real thing, thus confusing being widely-known with being wildly-successful. Kim Kardasian is one. Meryl Streep is the other. And in this play, the playwright suggests that when fame becomes the wherewithal of our existence (or culture), we can be destroyed by the very thing we have made… or to put it another way, as bees in honey drown.

Hitting Strides On the Drive Tee-Jay Thai Sushi – Offering Hip, Upscale & Flavorful Delights By TIM SLIVINKSI It was long awaited, but Tee-Jay Thai Sushi finally opened its doors a couple months back in the Shoppes of Wilton Manors, and the diners have been coming in steady streams ever since. It’s no wonder. The transformation that took place in the location is quite amazing. It is a large dining area that is subdued in color scheme and divided by banquettes that provide seating for larger parties. The colors are soothing while, at the same time, offering a hip, upscale look. Smaller tables for two and four surround the larger tables, or a customer can choose to eat at the bar and watch the sushi masters in action. On a recent Saturday night, we arrived to find the place bustling with hungry patrons. We were able to snag a table in minutes and settled in with a glass of wine to accompany our perusal of the rather large menu offerings. After some discussion, we decided on spring rolls (a traditional favorite) and a summer roll— after all, Labor Day was approaching, the traditional end to summer. Both appetizers were delicious. The spring rolls were packed with crunchy fresh vegetables and the lightly fried delicate crispness of the exterior almost melted in your mouth. I could become addicted to the spring rolls. The summer roll was wrapped in rice

paper and filled with shiitake mushrooms. Delicate, flavorful and light, it was a perfect accompaniment to the crunchy spring roll. When it came time to determine our entrées, we had so many options that narrowing down our selections took us some time. Tee-Jay offers traditional Thai and Japanese entrées, several noodle dishes, sashimi and various types of rolls. Everything is described in an appealing way, which had us changing our minds often. Ultimately, we both decided to order from the grilled entrée selections. I was in a poultry mood, so ordered the chicken breast while my partner was taken in by the grilled tuna. When the entrees arrived, we loved the three selections of dipping sauces that accompanied our perfectly grilled choices. A teriyaki sauce, a wasabi cream sauce and a traditional peanut sauce allowed us to mix and match flavor profiles with our entrees from the hot — but not too hot — zing of the wasabi to the cool slight sweetness of the teriyaki to the smooth creaminess of the peanut sauce. We discussed the different flavor palates, and I decided that I preferred the wasabi cream while my partner was more partial to the teriyaki. His tuna was perfectly seared on the exterior and wonderfully ruby on the inte-

jean’s Mushroom & Black kitchen Truffle Soup The largest truffle markets in France (and most likely in the world) are in Vaucluse and Lalbenque in Quercy. These markets are busiest in the month of January, when black truffles have their highest perfume. As of December 2009, black truffles were sold for about €1,000 per kilo at these markets and then resold at €3,940 per kilo by retail sellers. “The most learned men have been questioned as to the nature of this tuber, and after two thousand years of argument and discussion their answer is the same as it was on the first day: we do not know. The truffles themselves have been interrogated, and have answered simply: “eat us and praise the Lord.” – Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) • Good olive oil • 1 onion, chopped • 12 ounces mushrooms • 4 cups chicken stock • 1 sprig fresh thyme • Black truffle oil • ½ cup of heavy cream (optional) • Salt and pepper Clean the mushrooms by wiping them with a dry paper towel. Don't wash them! Trim off any bad parts, and coarsely chop them. Set aside. Heat the olive oil in a large pot. Add the chopped onions, and cook for three to five minutes. Add the chopped mushrooms, thyme and stock and cook for ten min-

utes. Reduce the heat and simmer for fifteen minutes. Add the cream, this is optional (I NEVER use cream in my soups, although I think I may have a reputation for doing “rich” food!) and then season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove the thyme sprig, and then pour soup into a blender. (Depending on the capacity of your blender, you might need to do this in stages.) Process until smooth. Return to the saucepan and bring to a simmer. Pour in the black truffle oil, and be careful not to over do this. A dash should do the trick… TASTE… you are the chef ! H

rior, just as tuna ought to be. My chicken breast was moist, juicy and fork tender. Wonderful sides of jasmine rice and crispy sautéed mixed vegetables accompanied our grilled entrees. One hint: I actually enjoyed using the teriyaki sauce to flavor the rice. Try it for yourself and see what you think. We enjoyed the ambiance of the room as we chatted and determined we need to return to try many of the delicious sounding options on the menu. If you are planning to go to Tee-Jay with a larger group of friends or colleagues, you might want to consider ordering one of Tee-Jay’s boats. A table of six gentlemen near us opted for the boat, and I must say it is an impressive presentation. The boats can be ordered in various sizes, and they offer an array of delicious choices, including rolls, sushi, and sashimi, depending upon the size you order. And yes, all the delicacies do actually arrive at your table in a boat. Tee-Jay offers beer and wine, and my partner clearly liked the selection of Asian beers on the menu; he enjoys their lightness and the slight sweetness on the palate. Tee-Jay’s clearly seems to have hit its stride along the Drive, judging by the number of happy diners and the quality of its food. We look forward to a return visit. If you have not yet stopped by for

Hang Up & Drive! By MICHAEL FRENCH

We’ve all been behind a car that suddenly slows down, takes forever to move when the light turns green, turns suddenly without signaling, swerves in and out of lanes, doesn’t keep a steady speed, or almost hits us when we’re stopped at a light. In the past the drivers of these cars would be suspected of being intoxicated. Now, most likely, the drivers of these cars are using a cell phone. Even worse, they could be using a cell phone and be intoxicated! Three people at my office stormed into to work the other day frustrated with stories of almost being in an auto accident because of drivers who were distracted from using their cell phone. They are not alone. Not much is being done about this ever increasingly dangerous trend. It’s an epidemic. It’s expensive, costing all of us in higher insurance premiums. It’s deadly. At least 10,000 deaths per year are directly attributed to accidents caused

by drivers using their cell phones. Statistics establishing the risks of DWD (driving while dialing and/or distracted) were found via studies by insurance companies. It appears, however, that the mighty insurance companies have made no demands to make “Hands Free” cell phone use mandatory or forbid texting while driving. It’s amazing that insurance companies, with all their lobbying at both the national and state levels, aren’t screaming for the right to deny or reduce auto insurance coverage if the driver can be found guilty of using a phone at the time of an accident. Might the reason for that be the insurance companies are heavily invested in the cell phone industry? Is it the same old profit without principle syndrome so pervasive in today’s business climate? It appears the insurance companies’ stock portfolios burgeoned by their investments in the exploding cell phone industry outweighs the losses they incur paying for the accidents caused by distracted, inconsiderate and irresponsible drivers. Is there any other reason for them not to insist our state and federal lawmakers legislate cell phone use while driving? When you don’t wear your seat belt, the only person at risk is yourself. Stop Spinning Your Wheels! Maximize Your Workouts By Avoiding Bad Habits Besides being fun and essential to your health, there is a science to working out. With some planning, a little skill and concentration – and some good old fashioned sweat – you can get one hell of a great workout in less than an hour. The trouble is that most guys fall into ruts by wasting time. Try leaving your cell phone and iPad in the car. Conduct business and chart your social calendar when you get back there. Stay focused on what you wish to accomplish during your workout and try to ignore other distracting stimuli. Save the gossip for the juice bar or the water cooler at work. You can cruise the parking lot, steam room and internet after you’ve performed your sets in the gym. There are also other ways to waste time in the gym. Certain commonly used exercises and techniques are ineffective and just plain unsafe. Here is my list of some time-consuming mistakes and bad habits to avoid in the gym. Let me share just a few of them and save you not only time, but also injury as well. n Jerking heavy weights on the leg extension machine in an attempt to blast your quadriceps (the muscles on the front of your thighs) is a recipe for a knee disaster. Besides straining knee lig-

aments, this exercise can over-develop your quads causing your hamstrings (the muscles on the backs of your thighs) to become excessively tight and inflexible. Tight hams in turn can cause low back pain and contribute to injuries. Avoid all this lower body “drama” by sticking with squats, presses, and lunges. n I’ve said this before: Any exercise where you push or pull a bar that’s positioned behind the neck can damage the rotator cuff muscles that attach your humerus (arm) to your scapula (shoulder). Once you strain or sprain these muscles, you can expect a royal pain in your neck or back. When you do wide grip lat pull downs or barbell or dumbbell shoulder presses, sit up straight, point your chest outward and pull or press the weight in front of you. n Doing cardio can be a boring waste of time, especially if you set your cardio machine too slow each and every workout. Actually varying your pace and intensity during your hour or so of cardio is a more successful fat-loss strategy. The best way to burn calories is by mixing fast and slow speeds. This is also the best way to address the body’s different energy systems and muscle groups. n Sit-ups are as useless and ineffective

as a high school phys. ed. teacher. Locking your feet under a rack or bench and rolling up on your lower back as you pull for dear life on your seven cervical vertebrae will only give you a sore back. Instead, you must do crunches. Keep your feet flat on the floor or slightly elevate your legs over an exercise ball to stabilize your hips. Extend your arms and crunch your torso, bringing your elbows to your knees. You can feel the burning in your abs already! n When you go to the gym, your main goal is to lift weights, so for goodness sake, use a weight that’s heavy enough so that your muscles feel worked by the end of a set of eight to 12 reps. Pyramid your weights up with each set, but be careful to maintain good form with each rep. For more tips on how to maximize your time in the gym, please contact TrainerTomB@aol.com. H
