Raising Awareness is the First Step to a Cure By BOB KECSKEMETY October is considered National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) which is an annual campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention and cure. Through the last three decades, organizations have made millions of women aware of breast cancer, its early detection and available treatments and, as a result, have saved millions of lives. Though there are local organizations dedicated to breast cancer awareness, larger national and international organizations get most of the spotlight. The most well-known international organization dedicated to breast cancer awareness is the Susan G. Komen for the

Cure. Komen was 33 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and died three years later. In 1980, her younger sister, Nancy Brinker, decided to act upon a promise she made to Suaan to find a way to speed-up breast cancer research. In 1982, Brinker founded the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in her sister’s memory. In 2007, the organization changed its name to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The first Susan G. Komen “National Race for the Cure” was held in Dallas, Texas, in October 1983 with 800 participating. In 1991, the participants in the New York City race were handed a pink ribbon to wear—the intial appearance of what would become the international symbol for breast cancer awareness.

A new study published in The Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy, produced by two professors from religious universities, claims that some people can change their sexual orientation. Psychologists Stanton L. Jones (Wheaton College, IL) and Mark A. Yarhouse (Regent University, VA) conducted the research initially with ninetyeight individuals seeking sexual orientation change over a period of six to seven years. “Evidence from the study suggested that change of homosexual orientation appears possible for some and that psychological distress did not increase on average as a result of the ‘CONVERSION THERAPY’ continues on Page 20 involvement in the change

process,” the authors of the study wrote. Both of the professors’ universities have connections to Exodus Ministries, which is a religious program designed to help “individuals and families impacted by homosexuality.” All of the participants were willing and seeking to change their orientation. Exodus said, “freedom from homosexuality through the power of Jesus Christ” was why people had joined the program. According to the study, thirtyfive people quit the program, and one person went back to “embracing a gay identity.” Still, the authors continued to follow the remaining sixty-five participants and track the “change

Mulheron, who had served previously as Director of Fundraising, will now direct all resource development funding streams such as corporate and individual donations/gifts, fundraising special events, sponsorships, partnerships and grants. The Pet Project is a charitable organization that helps to serve the needs of Broward and Miami-Dade county pet owners infected/affected by HIV/AIDS and other terminal diseases or other disabilities, as well as senior citizens with qualifying low income by providing comprehensive services designed to enable them to care for their animal companions. Michael Smith Receives Endorsement for Gay Rights PAC ST. PETERSBURG, FL – Equality Florida Action PAC has announced its endorsement of Michael Smith for Largo City Commission, Seat One. Smith, who would become Largo’s first gay commissioner, is running a strong grassroots campaign. He has also been endorsed by the Stonewall Democrats of Pinellas County, the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, the Largo Firefighters Association, and St. Pete councilman Steve Kornell. Today Stanton has moved on and was welcomed as the City Manager of Lake Worth, Florida. NY Town Clerk Refuses to Sign Same-Sex Marriage Licenses LEDYARD, NY – Claiming that God has condemned homosexuality as a sin,

Ledyard, New York, Town Clerk Rose Marie Belforti has refused to sign marriage licenses for same-sex couples. According to the New York Times, Belforti is at the heart of an emerging test case, as national advocacy groups look to Ledyard for an answer to how the state balances a religious freedom claim by a local official against a civil rights claim by a same-sex couple. Belforti is being represented by a Christian legal advocacy group based in Arizona. The Alliance Defense Fund is arguing that state law requires New York to accommodate her religious beliefs. Belforti has arranged for a deputy to issue all marriage licenses by appointment. H

The lower court originally ruled that the public has a right to access the recordings just like any other court record, even though the judge who presided at the trial said they were for his own personal use. The appeals court asked Proposition 8 sponsors and the lawyers for two samesex couples who sued to overturn it, to get their written arguments in by October 10. The 9th Circuit already is considering whether another federal judge erred when he struck down the ban, known as Proposition 8, as unconstitutional. Gay rights advocates want to use the recordings to try to puncture political arguments used by opponents of samesex marriage. H

Among broadcast channels, Fox emerged as the leader with eight regular LGBT characters. On cable, GLAAD, in a written statement, said that standout series include HBO’s “True Blood” with lesbian and gay characters caught up in the occult, and TeenNick’s “Degrassi,” which features Adam, a transgender teen. “Degrassi” won a Peabody award for the two-part episode “My Body Is a Cage.” “I think we’re going to see more and more gay characters on both cable and network TV as time goes on,” said Herndon Graddick, GLAAD’s senior director of programs. “The American public is hungry for diverse characters. HRC Honors Mayor Michael Bloomberg WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) honored New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg last weekend for his work in supporting samesex marriage in the state. Bloomberg was widely credited for his public lobbying for the passage of the same-sex marriage act, which passed in Albany in June. The billionaire mayor also financed the cause, making donations to Republican state senators whose votes were needed for the bill to pass. “This has been a remarkable year in the fight for LGBT equality,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. “We’re thrilled to be joined by national leaders and inspiring artists as we celebrate our victories and redouble our efforts for the fights that remain ahead.” H

The results of the 2010 Census revised estimates are closer to the results of the 2010 American Community Survey (ACS) for same-sex married and unmarried partners. The 2010 ACS estimated samesex married couples at 152,335 and samesex unmarried partners at 440,989. Statistics on same-sex couple households were derived from two questions on the census and ACS questionnaire: relationship to householder and the sex of each person. When data was captured for these two questions on the 2010 Census door-to-door form, the wrong box may have been checked for the sex of a small percentage of opposite-sex spouses and unmarried partners. Because the population of opposite-sex married couples is large and the population of same-sex married couples in particular is small, an error of this type artificially inflates the number of same-sex married partners. Serbia Bans Gay Pride Parade BELGRADE, SERBIA – The government of Serbia banned all gay pride parades last weekend as well as all other public gatherings. Officials feared a repeat of the violence that took place last year over gay pride festivities. Intelligence gathered by Serbian security agencies said that groups were ready to attack gay activists, members of the media, police and officials of the political parties had a gay pride parade taken place. Last year, over 100 policemen were injured and dozens of anti-gay activists were arrested trying to disrupt the parade. Other rioters attacked offices of the ruling coalition parties and caused widespread damage across Belgrade. H

Majority Oppose North Carolina Anti Same-Sex Amendment RALEIGH, NC – The majority of residents of North Carolina oppose a proposed amendment to the state’s constitution banning gay marriage, according to a poll conducted by Elon University. The results released last week showed that 56% of the residents oppose the amendment lawmakers okayed for ratification by the voters next May. Thirty-

nine percent said that they support the ban which was a 4% drop from the same poll taken in March, 2009. The survey of 594 people conducted between September 25 and September 29 has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.02 percentage points. The poll also indicated that though residents of North Carolina don’t favor same-sex marriage itself, they don’t want an amendment to become part of the constitution. Only 33% of respondents said they support full marriage rights for gay couples which is an increase of 12% since March, 2009. H

New British Passport Form Gets Same-Sex Parents Option LONDON, ENGLAND – A proposal will allow same-sex parents to be included in the revised application for a British passport. The proposals also include sex-free passports to allow transgender people to opt out of identifying themselves as either male or female. Country Music Star Comes Out in Favor of Gay Rights NEW YORK, NY – In an interview on the cable television show “CMT Insider” last weekend, country music star Toby Keith spoke out in favor of the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” although he did question the safety of females who are sent to the front lines of battle. “That whole gay issue thing, that’s never bothered me,” he told CMT Insider correspondent Allison DeMarcus. “I’ve never seen what that affects and [why] anybody should care -- and they never do affect me.” He then continued, “First of all, we’re going to stop somebody from getting a marriage license because they’re gay? You won’t stop them from living together, so what have you accomplished? Wasting a lot of money here and a lot of time that could be spent working on this deficit that we’re under. Today, the “Race” is held in over 100 U.S. cities, attracting over 1.3 million participants. Races are also held in nine other countries: Australia, New Zealand, Germany, The Netherlands, Italy, United Kingdom, Canada, Hungary, and Bulgaria, plus the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Lesser known are the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walks for the Cure which are held in several U.S. cities and consist of a 60mile trek which spans over three days. Other smaller Komen fundraisers are held throughout Europe. Funds raised by the Races and Walks help support community outreach programs. The money also supports local community breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment projects through the Komen Award and Research Grant Program. is a series of nine Avon 2-Day Walks for Breast Cancer held each year from April to October. From 2003 through 2008, the Avon Walks raised more than $265 million. The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer also raises awareness as participants spend an entire weekend walking 39 miles through cities and towns around the country. Pharmaceutical company, AstraZeneca, which manufactures several breast cancer drugs, founded National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 1995 with the aim to promote mammography as the most effective weapon in the fight against breast cancer. National Breast Cancer Awareness month has come under fire over last few years. The Cancer Prevention Coalition has criticized the basic message of NBCAM as a form of victim blaming because it focuses on "early detection and treatment" while ignoring environmental factors. Their researchers contend that hormone use is one of the major factors raising the cancer risk and that drug and chemical companies have a vested interest in treating the disease rather than finding ways to minimize its rate of incidence. Recent studies show that breast cancer is linked to several environmental and genetic factors, which can be controlled or mitigated. In October 2008, First Lady Laura Bush had the White House decorated in pink in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. H

cons and Pittman’s uncle to attack the couple and physically prevent them from entering the church. According to WBBJ-TV: “My uncle and two other deacons came over to the car per my dad’s request. My uncle smashed me into the door as the other deacon knocked my boyfriend back so he couldn’t help me, punching him in his face and his chest. The other deacon came and hit me through my car window in my back,” said Pittman. He said bystanders did not offer assistance. He said the deacon yelled derogatory homosexual slurs, even after officers arrived. He said the officers never intervened to stop the deacons from yelling the slurs. Since then, the couple filed assault charges against Deacons Billy Sims and Eugene McCoy. Pittman pressed additional charges against his father and Deacon Patrick Flatt. H

FDNY Welcomes First Transgender Firefighter NEW YORK, NY – In what has been described as a brave move, one of New York’s bravest is busting out of the box and becoming the first transgender firefighter in the city’s history. According to the New York Post, the male-to-female firefighter has been openly welcomed by the FDNY, even as a Brooklyn judge handling a discrimination lawsuit against the department has blasted it for its lack of diversity. Power of Celebrity or Power of a Community? Alex Vaughn In today’s world, anyone can be a celebrity. It seems, you really don’t have to even achieve anything to become one. Thanks to reality TV, you simply have to go on a dating show, or perhaps venture into a jungle somewhere far away, or, better yet, stay in a house with complete strangers and if you are odious, good looking or stupid enough, you will grace the cover of US Weekly or the Enquirer. Celebrity culture is prevalent in our society, particularly as a result of this television phenomenon. They sell us everything from water to fiber supplements, oftentimes stuff we really don’t need. However above the vapid existence of some reality socialites, there are celebrities who are using their fame and popularity in fantastic ways for the gay community. Being gay or a gay-friendly celebrity in 2011 is extremely fashionable. Now, it seems, is the time. We have gay celebrities and their partners kissing on the red carpet. We can read about celebrity weddings, adoptions and much more. In a way, they have become poster children for the “normality” of gay lifestyles. Superstar Elton John and film producer David Furnish married and now have a child. They live a lovely jet-set lifestyle without bullying. Certainly, there’s the odd snarky remark, but on the whole … perfect. Then there are actors John Barrowman and his civil partner, Scott Gill; actor Neil Patrick Harris and his husband, chef David Bertka and their twins, Gideon and Harper; Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, among others. Without counting any of their actual contributions to charities, or to political initiatives, their simple presence “out” is bringing gay life to the A-list forefront of our celebrity-obsessed culture. I have often said Middle America is where the decisions are made – not in Miami, NYC or other major cities on the peripheral. As these people see more and more of the celebrities they watch on “Glee,” or daytime talk shows, they will cut them more slack than they might otherwise afford the gay guy in the small town. More than just swanning around being “gay housewives” or over-stereotyped gays who sell products and unrealistic lifestyle ambitions, the instant reality show celeb also occasionally makes a positive impact as

well. Carson Kressley comes to mind. Not only has he kept his staying power (despite being the most “outrageous” of the bunch of “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” crew), he is now headlining his own national TV show, “Carson Nation” and is topping the rating charts on “Dancing with Stars”– right beisde Chaz Bono, who is also flying the flag for the LGBT community. Without excuse or muting their instinctive behaviour, this pair shows that gays really can do anything they want. If the bigotry and hate that is putting a stop to legalizing marriage was actually as far reaching as the news would have us believe, then the voting majority would never have allowed a gay man and a post-op transsexual to be on a nationally televised reality TV show. Reality TV is part of our lives, and many people around the world will change their social schedules to stay in and watch a show. Thanks to Carson and Chaz, they are being taught that there is no need to fight, bully or judge. These are just normal celebrities, competing on a show watched by “everyone.” Add to the mix those celebrities who aren’t gay but who weigh in with their support of the “gay cause.” Brad Pitt and Angeline Jolie who wont marry until marriage is allowed for everyone, for example. The late Liz Taylor, Madonna, Cher, Bette Midler, Sharon Stone, Donatella Versace, Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway and many, many more ensure their support of gay causes is loud and clear. Some have questioned why? Is it because they genuinely do care? Is it because it is a popular cause? Or could it just be the power of the gay community? Does it actually matter? Probably not. It’s worth understanding that the people listed above all have a strong gay following. They have been kept in their careers in no small part because of the support of this community. Many have clearly acknowledged this – and often. So too, comedienne Kathy Griffin who openly courts gay men and women as her fans. She is extremely vocal for “her gays” including threatening Sarah Palin’s daughter for using the “F” word on her Facebook. Lady Gaga has taken support of the gay community to an entirely different level. To call it the stratosphere would be an understatement. Ironically, her support has been knocked more often than not by the community itself. While I was reading news reports

Letters to the Editor In response to the Editorial “A Free Country?” in the Florida Agenda, Sept. 29. DEAR EDITOR, I totally agree with your views. I am a GermanAmerican who grew up speaking German and English. I went to live in Germany. What a different view Germans have of sexuality! For more than 10 years Germans have had what they call the HomoEhe (gay marriage). My then-time boyfriend and now husband and I visited Germany last year. We were treated like a couple in all the hotels and organizations that we visited. Then, this year, he took me to meet his family in Brazil. Brazil has gay marriage,

thinking about this editorial, I stumbled across a list of celebrities who support gay causes. It was compiled by the “viewers” of the website. One guy said in response to the question: “FFS. Don’t say Lady Gaga. WE ALL KNOW!” Wow – and yet I have felt the same way he did – particularly around the time that “Born this Way” came out. I mean honestly, “We know, we know.” And all this before the backlash when she was dubbed the “Gay Icon,” replacing Madonna in the role. If you take a step back, however, Lady Gaga realized early on that it wasn’t straight middle America who made her. They didn’t appreciate how “different” she is. She isn’t attractive; boys don’t fancy her; and she’s no Taylor Swift, though she has a great voice. It’s her individuality that struck the chord with the community. Not content with posturing on gay rights, or making a mint on sales of her “Gay Anthem.” Rather, she has used her voice, loudly and wisely. In fact, just last week, fresh from paying tribute to 14-year-old Jamie Rodemeyer. He was the fan who said goodbye to her on his Facebook page before he tragically took his own life, the victim of bullying. She even addressed the issue directly with the President of the United States. Like it or not, this is what a celebrity should be doing. While selling the gay lifestyle is nice and entertaining, it won’t help a 14 year old on the receiving end of taunts, it just may help turn the tables on bullies who will be made to look like the bigots they are. We encourage more celebrities to lend their voices to the growing outcry over the immediate need for gay rights and a stop to tolerance for any bullying in shools and the workplace. The need is great and the groundswell long overdue! We may not all be famous, but we all have a voice to join the outcry. Like celebrities, we need to speak out against bullying, for the protection of our rights, and for anything for which you feel passion. We can no longer be content to coast through a vacuous existence of bars and sex and assume someone else will do the work for us. If we can make a celebrity, why can’t we make a change? H

too, even though it is not called "marriage" – it carries all the same rights. So we got married on August 3rd. At first I thought that this was just a lark. But as the public notary read us a very long list of our rights and obligations to each other I grasped how this would change our lives. Unforntunately, my fellow countrymen here do not recognize our marriage. So we are planning on moving to Brazil within the next couple of years. What really bowled me over: everyone, but really everyone congratulated us. When we got to the customs check at the airport to leave Brazil, the official asked for our documents. I gave her my American passport and my new Brazilian ID card. She asked me why I have a

Brazilian ID card. I told her that I had just married the man standing next to me. “Parabems!” she exclaimed (congratulations!) with a broad grin. We had to pay a lawyer in the US around $1,000 to draw up papers protecting us here. It cost us around $25,000 to get my husband his green card and then citizenship. Straights don't have those fees. Furthermore, as a state employee, I am not allowed to put him on my healthcare. I wish that my fellow countrymen could grow up and finally see that we should be treated equally as we are in most of Europe, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, parts of Mexico, and Canada. Transgender Revolution? A Report from the 2nd Annual TransCon: Justice Summit By RajindRa naRinesingh

Transgender revolution! Well more like transgender empowerment! That is how I would describe the 2nd Annual TransCon: Justice Summit this past weekend at F.I.U. Biscayne Campus. As a transgender woman who has endured great discrimination, I have often felt alone in my plight. Getting together with other transgender people affirmed to me that I am not alone and that many of my trans sisters and brothers have had similar experiences. Besides members of the transgender community, there were a host of trans and non-transgender advocates in attendance. Medical professionals, activist, friends and family made up the group of about 70. The two-day conference was

presented by the Aqua Foundation for women and featured a group of dynamic speakers and presenters, including Jessica Lam – Transgender Activist (who developed the idea for TransCon), Rodrigo Lehtinen, son of Congresswomen Illiana Ros Lehtinen (Transgender Activist from Gender Justice L.A.), Holiday Simmons (Community Educator for Lambda Legal Southern Division), Dr. Carol Clark (facilitator of the transgender support group at the Pride Center, Wilton Manors), C.J. Otoma (Executive Director of Save Dade), Carrington “Rusty” Mead Esq. (dealing with LGBT legal issues), Daniel Redman (N.C.L.R. head of LGBT Elder advocacy), Dr. Christopher Estes (board certified Gynecologist and member of the University of Miami Center for Aesthetic and Corrective Genital Surgery), Jody Marksamer (who overseas N.C.L.R.'s policy and advocacy work), Dr. Marilyn Volker (well known transgender counseler and has been a pioneer in the field of transgender studies), and 11-year-old Jazz – transgender male-to-female who was featured on the Barbara Walters special with transgender children and played the principle role of my niece in

the all-trans cast movie “Bella Maddo”. Quite a number of topics concerning our community were covered. The presenters from NCLR referenced the “Injustice at Every Turn” report in which over five thousand transgender people were surveyed regarding their experiences with discrimination. The results produced some sad and disturbing statistics in the areas of health care, housing and employment discrimination. Overall, the entire conference was extremely informative. I was very enlightened to learn about some of the new laws regarding our community. In speaking to other trans people at the conference, they too seem to really appreciate the legal information. I had no idea that in 2010, the U.S. Tax Court ruled that medical treatment (i.e. hormones, surgery, etc.) for gender identity is tax deductible. And here in the State of Florida, a trans person can now get the gender marker changed on their driver’s license by taking a medical affidavit signed by their physician, social security card, your old state ID and two pieces of mail with your current address to the driver's license office. The workshop “Building Leaders in Our Community” presented by Gender

Justice and Save Dade provided a wealth of information on putting the activism into action. And gave effective ways on how our community can rally together to win the changes we want. For a 40-something trans woman like me, who often times feels like 80-something, this conference was a breath of fresh air. A transgender life can be a very challenging one. And after many years of advocacy work for the LGBT community, lately I had begun to feel like a lot of it had been in vain. I left this conference with a renewed spirit, truly feeling empowered. Eleven-year-old Jazz really confirmed for me the importance of my advocacy work, and that all of us LGBT adults have a responsibility to pave the way for future LGBT generations. Just as we stand on the shoulders of the ones that came before us, we all play an important role in our liberty. None of our efforts are in vain! H

REAL ESTATE / NEWS

FLORIDAAGENDA.COM

Buying & Selling: Neighborhoods By RiCK giBsOn When I first moved to Fort Lauderdale, I was told, “It’s a perfect grid system” and did not understand. I did not understand how a “perfect grid system” could be interrupted by canals, bridges, railroad tracks, a “thing” called the Intracoastal, and streets that went into winding loops and suddenly into straight lines again. Then I learned that there are not one, but two cities completely surrounded by Fort Lauderdale (Oakland Park and Wilton Manors), and if you include Lazy Lake, it could be said there are three. There is an intersection we know as “Five Points” where not four, but five streets meet in this “perfect grid.” NE 4th Avenue suddenly becomes Wilton Drive, and just when you think you “get it,” the same street becomes “Flying L Drive” (named after the Fort Lauderdale High School football team incidentally). Sunrise Blvd. just decides to become Federal and then changes its mind and goes on its separate way again. If you want to mess with someone who just moved here, tell them it is a “perfect grid system.” If you want to make a friend, tell them it’s not. I’m telling you it’s not. This is very important when buying and selling real estate here. The buyers must understand what they are buying and where they are buying, or in my experience, they will not buy. Sellers need to understand the particular changes in

their neighborhoods relative to others because they all gentrify and change price points at different rates. It can be said this is all quite complex. Like most things that are complex, it can be easiest to understand as a sum of its “parts.” In real estate, those “parts” are our neighborhoods, or in real estate jargon, they are “subdivisions.” Each subdivision could be thought of as its own little city in a way, and each one having a particular style, income level, demography, distance from the Atlantic, and countless other qualities the most significant of which may be price. If you have a child, you may want the “A rated” schools in Coral Ridge or Victoria Park. If you are an avid yachtsman, then you will want to be anywhere from Coral Ridge to the Isles of Venice to Sailboat Bend, but you will probably not want to have any fixed bridges. If you are an investor, you may choose the fastest changing neighborhoods with the highest cash flow like South Middle River and Lauderdale Manors between Wilton Manors and Downtown. The good news is our subdivisions make everything much simpler, so my advice is to get to know them, and try to focus on the positive aspects of each one. For the LGBT community, the “sense” of community can be of the utmost importance, especially since we are in

fact a minority, even though at times in Wilton Manors on Halloween or at Gay Pride that may not seem true. To be close to people who share your values and help you to feel comfortable, especially as we get older, is one of the most important considerations for any buyer, and that does not only hold true for the LGBT community. For the LGBT community, the City of Wilton Manors is well known to have one of the highest per capita concentrations of LGBT people in the United States and so therefore could be considered the “heart” of our LGBT community in a way. But this is not the rule, and it would be a mistake to not consider spectacular neighborhoods surrounding cities too. At one time, I was showing a property to some incredibly charismatic clients from London and the home happened to be in Poinsettia Heights, a nice subdivision of Fort Lauderdale. My client looked at the woman on the couch, who was in curlers, and asked “May I ask you a personal question?” The whole room stopped, as she looked up and said, “Why of course.” He then asked her “Do you consider this a very ‘gay friendly’ neighborhood?” I will never forget how stunned she looked before she laughed and said, “I don’t really have a choice now do I, since I am outnumbered three to one!” Well,

contradict the commonly expressed view that sexual orientation is not changeable,” the professors claimed. The study has come under fire from experts and from gay advocacy groups. The former have claimed that the study is flawed because the change that occurs is only temporary and is detrimental to the psyche. Eli Coleman, professor and director of Human Sexuality at the University of Minnesota Medical School, was unconvinced by the findings. “We’ve been through this over and over,” he said. “You can get behavioral changes, but that’s not orientation change. You can get short-term behavioral change. It’s not sustained.” The study also went against the American Psychological Association, which in a statement in 2005 clarified that homosexuality was not changeable. The association had also stated that there was no evidence that conversion or reparative therapy aimed at changing sexual orientation was safe or effective. “The APA was making pretty strong statements that orientation really doesn’t change and that attempts to do so would be harmful,” said Yarhouse. “They were presenting absolutist claims about this immutability of orientation and great risk of harm. They were ideal questions for research. Can people change? Or is it truly an immutable characteristic?” Jones was also quick to suggest that "the forceful way in which the secular mental-health communit is saying

change is impossible and harmful is just not well-advised." The authors made clear that though advocacy groups and gay people may find religious conversion courses “deeply offensive,” there is a clear set of people who don’t want to be gay or part of the LGBT community. He went on to address the APA’s statement by saying, “I’d like to see mental health organizations to show greater respect for diversity for how a person chooses to live their life and live this out,” Yarhouse said. The researchers, who presented the results on Thursday in Nashville, found that not everyone experienced a successful change through the religious ministry. "Not even a majority is successful," Jones pointed out to CitizenLink, a publication of Focus on the Family, "but a very substantial group of people report fairly dramatic change." Jones also pointed out that change does not come easy even for the successful ones. "It needs to be said that this process is not like a light switch that switches from one switch point to the other,” the professor said, according to CitizenLink. “Life is still complicated for these people, and some still have some residuals of their homosexual attractions. However, they are people who report being able to function as heterosexuals, they're happy with their marriages, and they feel that their lives have changed dramatically." There have been claims of bias, but

process” over the time period. Yarhouse explained, “It’s a study for people who are highly religious who are distressed by the experience of attraction.” He went on to say, “They want to know, is it even possible? What might I experience if I go into religious-based ministry?” The ministries in question were throughout the US and totaled sixteen locations. The study claims that 53 percent were classified as successful outcomes. Of those outcomes, 23 percent reported success in the form of successful conversion to heterosexual orientation, and 30 percent reported stable behavioural chastity with substantive dis-identification with homosexual orientation. Just 20 percent reported to fully embracing a gay identity at the end of the study. At the beginning of the study, Jones and Yarhouse conducted a review of both any change in orientation and stress levels in the beginning of the study and a total of five times throughout. They conducted the study by interviewing the participants and consistently asking the same questions annually about sexual attraction, emotional or romantic infatuation and sexual fantasies. They drew results by using two different scales, one devised by sex researcher Alfred Kinsey and another measure called the Shively-DeCecco scale. “The findings of this study appear to

although her observation does not hold up statistically for Poinsettia Heights, it does show the importance to those savvy buyers, and how savvy the seller was to acknowledge that importance. Neighborhoods and their differences is one of my favorite topics, and they are more important here than anywhere I have ever lived. We have an incredibly diverse community and region. Rather than be confused by all the differences between neighborhoods, like the differences in each other, we can instead embrace those differences and learn as much as we can about each one. I hope you will try to notice the subtle and not so subtle differences between all of our neighborhoods, not just the one where you live. People live in all of them, and they are all home to someone. Perhaps they are a lot like you. H

both professors stated they took the research wherever the results directed them. They also said they wanted the findings to help people keep an open mind to the idea that change in sexual orientation is possible. “For an individual who feels they need to pursue change, particularly on a religious basis, our study encourages them to pursue that path," they said. Snowbiz Patricia Nell Warren Goes “Brokeback” By niChOLas snOW My West, the latest release from world-renowned and celebrated author Patricia Nell Warren (of The Front Runner fame), is “a sagebrush bouquet of 47 favorites on everything from agriculture to zest, by way of cooking, ethnicity, history, politics, sexuality and other subjects.” In his foreword, noted author/filmmaker Gregory Hinton, himself a born Westerner, says the book is "a masterwork by one of our most gifted storytellers. Patricia’s deeply evocative stories will quickly transport even the most dug-in urban reader to the heartland that is the American West.” In our exclusive interview, my good friend Patricia explained that her “core audience” is both gay and non-gay, and that for both, “the open discussion of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgendered people in the American West, both past and present” is a new topic. “I was inspired to do this book, by the way, in which the Autry National Center in L.A. stepped forward last year to become the first museum in the U.S. that directly addresses this subject. They did it when they put the two iconic Brokeback Mountain cowboy shirts on display in their gallery devoted to classic Western films. Its action opened the door to producer Gregory Hinton's ‘Out West’ program which is ongoing at the museum now, and promotes study and discussion of this theme in a really wonderful way. Gregory is also taking the ‘Out West’ series to other cities and states, mostly to museums, public libraries and other cultural institutions.” The stories in My West are in sections which include among many Gender, Politics, Sexuality and Spirituality. In the Gender section about native American berdaches, Patricia writes, “To understand how a Two-Spirit saw himself/herself, and how others in the tribe or band saw this person as well, a twentieth century American has to put aside all the traditional Judeo-Christian beliefs about sexuality, and even the western European non-Christian humanistic notions of sexuality. We have to step through the looking glass, into a different world.” In “It’s My History Too” in the Sexuality section, Patricia explains, “Though many Americans today think of the West as the phalanx of ‘red states’ on the TV map during election night, the West can surprise with its sudden shiftings of spiritual sunlight and shadow, its social landslides that can reveal unsuspected layerings of raw experience and ideological challenge. In fact, the West’s essential quirkiness has enabled all kinds of LGBT people to find something out here – from hiding places to homes. At times, we have not only survived here, but thrived here.” In her own My West introduction,

Patricia explains, “So my body of Western writing is rayed through a changing perspective over half a century – as I evolved from young hopeful college scribbler to published best-selling author. As I left Christianity to become an ever-questioning pagan. As I came out to live the life of a gay woman.” In “Moments of Stillness” in the Zest section, Patricia gives us the perfect reason to curl up with My West: “SCW (severe communications withdrawal) is my term for what I experienced,” she explained about being isolated in a western bed & breakfast. “It’s a syndrome not yet studied by western medicine – but it does exist. Many of us live with multiple TVs in our homes; television even invades our cars now, where it com-

pounds the uproar from radios, cell phones and CDs. Many of us spend the day with phone headsets on, or walk around with cell phones glued to our ears. We’re suffering from CA (communications addiction).” Patricia concluded my interview by explaining, “So many people think of me as a fiction writer. But I'm also passionate about nonfiction – not just political commentary, but history as well. I love the challenge of thinking about how I have experienced Western history from childhood, and how I've come to have my own perspective on it. Part of that history is how we LGBT people have been semi-hidden out there in the dust, and now we're becoming visible.” And for some breaking and fantastic news, My West, The Front Runner and other of Patricia’s titles will be available soon on Amazon’s Kindle. Honoring these special members of the community celebrates the accomplishments and strengths and hope for the future. This week we will look at some of the women who will be honored at the awards presentation. The Jamie Bloodworth Leadership Award is the most prestigious of the awards presented, according to Michael Albetta, former president of the Dolphins. In fact, the only award that is outlined in the organization’s bylaws which states that the Jamie Bloodworth Leadership Award may be

awarded by the Board of Directors to any self-identifying female who has shown excellent leadership and/or sponsorship in improving community relationship in the LGBT communit-at-large. The purpose is to memorialize the life and accomplishments of Jamie Bloodworth in relation to Broward County human-rights issues. Recipients this year will be Jennifer Morales and Laurie Whittaker of Sidelines Sports Bar who, according to Albetta, have been instrumental in the Dolphin’s Get Out the Vote Campaigns. The Trailblazer Award will be presented to Patricia Windowmaker, the Sworn Legal Counsel to the Broward County Sheriff ’s Office. The Trailblazer Award goes to the person who has gone above and beyond outside their normal box. According to Albetta, Windowmaker has been instrumental in the hiring of transgendered individuals at BSO, which currently employes several transgendered staff. The weekend of the Awards Reception, Windowmaker will be in Massachusetts getting legally married to Broward Judge Lisa Porter, but Windowmaker will be returning for that evening to accept her award. The Political Alliance Award will be presented to Anne Sallee, Vice Mayor of Oakland Park, and also a member of the

Dolphins. Sallee is being presented the award for her hard work in the Dolphin’s Get Out the Vote Campaign by setting up the tent each month on the first Saturday of each month at the Pride Center’s Flea Market. Sallee moved to Oakland Park in 2003 and became a neighborhood director in 2005. She has been a member of the Dolphins since 2007. “I’m proud to be part of the greater community,” said Sallee. “I grew up in a household that believed that everybody should be accepted for who they are and that nothing else should matter. Everyone has the right to enjoy their lifestyle as long as it doesn’t impose on another person’s rights. I appreciate the friendships I’ve made and the involvement that I’ve had, and I look forward to it for a long time.” This year’s Humanitarian Award will be going to Maroone/AutoNation for their various work and sponsorships of organizations and events in the LGBT community. Accepting the award will be Gale M. Butler, Corporate Vice President of Maroone/AutoNation. Albetta said that Maroone/AutoNation, along with Butler, has been active in various LGBT pride events in the tri-county area, the Pride Center’s “Stars of the Rainbow,” and Women in Network (WIN) by sponsoring its golf tournament that raises money for can-

cer awareness. Maroone/AutoNation are also major sponsors of the International Gay Rodeo, the SMART Ride, Broward House, and the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. “We’re very proud of the fact that we’re being honored,” said Butler. “We’ve always been supportive of the gay community and are most appreciative of this honor. We’ve been long-time supporters of AIDS causes since we first came into existence about fifteen years ago. We’re involved in the Community Foundation, which took on the cause of AIDS when nobody else would. I think it’s a good thing and important thing for a big company to do.” Tickets for the Dolphin Democrats’ Awards Reception can be purchased online at their website, www.DolphinDems.org. Individual tickets are $75, which includes the reception, dinner, awards presentation and silent auction. VIP tickets at $150 per person also includes the VIP reception. For additional information, either visit their website or you may call 866-478-8262. Sponsorship opportunities are also still available. In next week’s Florida Agenda, we will interview more recipients of the annual Dolphin Democrat’s Awards Reception. H

and there was sincere interest in all directions, including mine. When it was time to eat, every item was blessed in prayer, surprisingly by my friend Eli – who impressed me with his knowledge of Hebrew prayer and etiquette in preparation of the feast. The blessed food included challah bread dipped in honey, beans, apples, squash and fish. There was tremendous appreciation given to each item and, though I do not speak or understand Hebrew, I understood the prayers that were spoken in my heart. Once the prayers were completed, I dove into the most delicious food prepared by several of the guests, including Tush-Tush, Elli and Harvey. During dinner everyone continued to talk, laugh and simply be happy. At one point, I had wondered why this was a part of the Jewish culture; more importantly, why I had never been witness to it before. And I admit, with no small amount of shame, to having accepting many common stigmas about what it meant to be Jewish. I heard stories of lost love, great adventures, professional aspirations, family and God (HaShem). I was captivated. To think that a Christian could find so much peace among Jews, celebrating a holiday he knew nothing about, was an awakening. How fortunate that I was able to abandon my ignorance and be blessed by the love, friendship, generosity and kindness of these wonderful people. Rosh Hashanah is described as “the day of judgment” (Yom ha-Din) and “the day of remembrance” (Yom haZikkaron). For me, it is the day where any judgments I held were whisked away, and a day which I will remember forever. H

For several years, a good friend of mine had made every effort to get me to join in holiday events and special occasions, simply to involve me in something that was family-orientated, since I have no family. Year after year, invitation after invitation, I regretfully declined. Eventually, he gave up on me, and no more invitations were given until this past week when I received a invitation to celebrate Rosh Hashanah. While I’m not Jewish and had little knowledge of the culture of my friend, I gladly accepted his invitation to join him and others to celebrate the first of the High Holidays or Yamim Noraim (“Days of Awe”). When I arrived at the home of the host David, I was greeted with great kindness and an odd sense of familiarity (though we had never met). It was as if the moment I stepped into the door of his beautiful condo on the beach, I was not a stranger to him, but instead a welcome addition to the group of close friends. The aroma of fish, chicken, couscous and other amazing smells I could not identify consumed the room. As conversations took place, I simply listened and was amazed at the bond that these friends shared through religion. Some spoke in Hebrew, while others spoke in English or French. What was touching to me was that every conversation included smiles and laughter. I have not been around that type of levity in quite a while. There was absolutely no negativity in the room; no complaints; no issues; no drama. It was strange for me to be in an environment where people openly praised one another and the compliments were flying in every direction. Everyone there was so proud to be in one another’s company,

A National Edge to a Local Chamber of Commerce Keith Blackburn, President & Founder, Talks Change By ALEX VAUGHN Earlier this year, the Rainbow Alliance membership unanimously voted to establish the Greater Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (GFLGLCC) as a 501(c)(6) non-profit organization dedicated to promoting business and economic opportunities for the LGBT and LGBT-friendly community in the Greater Fort Lauderdale area. The new Chamber is an affiliate of the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) Chamber members will now have access to many more benefits, compared to the Rainbow Alliance. Keith Blackburn is the Founder and President of the GFLGLCC. The Agenda sat down with him to understand more about the changes and the benefits for the LGBT Business Community at large. What prompted the development of the Chamber? Although it may seem like we came out of nowhere, it actually evolved over the past four or five years. The Rainbow Alliance, which was set up as a hospitality organization, had been around for 15 years in total. It really couldn’t expand under its Bylaws and structure. I brought the idea of affiliation to the NGLCC at that time, but the organization wasn’t ready to undertake the change. The Rainbow Alliance focus was tourism and nearly all of the members were hotels, guesthouses, etc. With the economic situation of the past few years, many of our accommodation properties were sold. By the time I became chair last year, it was fairly clear that we needed to either expand, or close down. I contacted the NGLCC to discuss a possible affiliation. Without them, I don’t think it would have been viable for us to become a Chamber. On April 26th, the Rainbow Alliance membership unanimously voted to begin the GFLGLCC and to close the Rainbow Alliance. What are your aims for the future? I see a great future for the GFLGLCC because we have so much to offer our members and the community. As membership grows, I would like to see some counsels added, to serve the specific needs of our member businesses. As an example, I would love to have a “Tourism Council” which would pretty much be an advocate and promotions vehicle for LGBT tourism, while under the umbrella of the GFLGLCC. Our website SouthFloridaFun.com, is still up. It was the website for the Rainbow Alliance. We could easily make some modifications and use it to focus on the LGBT tourist market – linked from the Chamber website, GoGayFortLauderdale.com. Where do you most see the necessity for the GFLGLCC?

Because of the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce affiliation, we offer a unique set of benefits to our members and the community. We are the only LGBT focused chamber of commerce in Greater Fort Lauderdale and Broward County. Because of the relationships we have developed with the NGLCC and other affiliate chambers, our reach goes much further than it would without the affiliation. How do you feel the community has changed in terms of tourism? Since tourism is the number one revenue source in Greater Fort Lauderdale, we all know the impact on all of our businesses. Fort Lauderdale has been pretty consistently ranked as a top LGBT tourist destination. Back when LGBT tourism began to flourish in Fort Lauderdale, the focus was on the beaches. Although that’s always going to be a draw, we are now known internationally as a truly diverse destination with cultural offerings as well. Wilton Manors is also known internationally and is a huge draw with its nightlife, dining and shopping. Speaking of culture, we are proud to be sponsoring the 3rd Annual Greater Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, presented by HBO. The Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau is also sponsoring the event and has plans to promote next year’s festival at the Toronto Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, as well as other events. The goal is to make our annual film festival another reason for LGBT tourists to come here. We are also working with Manors Masquerade, Stonewall Pride and Pride South Florida. All of these events attract tourists. Greater Fort Lauderdale is very fortunate to have something for everyone, so this makes our community very unique and welcoming to all. What do you enjoy most about being part of the GFLGLCC? The part that I enjoy the most has been implementing all of the features and benefits for members. I also enjoy working with our Affiliate Chambers and Community Partners, as well as promoting beneficial events for the community. What are the benefits to membership of GFLGLCC? Becoming a member of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Gay & Lesbian

Chamber of Commerce isn't just about the financial support your membership provides. It's about the relationship. Becoming a member of the GFLGLCC brings you side-by-side with us as we continually make outreach and partner with local business organizations wishing to promote the LGBT business community. We will also promote Greater Fort Lauderdale to national organizations wishing to increase their opportunities and reach within our LGBT business community. Just a few of the benefits include,LGBT Corporate Events and National Exposure, Business Community Partners, Networking and Online exposure. The full list of benefits is available on our website.

Having joined with the NGLCC, what changes will be enacted? As an affiliate member of the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce members receive full membership and benefits. We are now connected with other affiliate members and chambers. This allows our members to promote our businesses, tourism, etc. to a much larger audience. As an organization, it gives us the opportunity to promote community events to all of our affiliates as well. Using the upcoming Film Festival as an example, we are promoting this, beyond our borders, which will benefit tourism and related businesses in Greater Fort Lauderdale.

What advantages are there to being teamed with the NGLCC? Through the NGLCC, we will be informed of legislation that may affect our business. Being an affiliate member of the NGLCC, we have representation on issues important to LGBT business before Congress and Executive Branch agencies. Just last week, acting U.S. Secretary of Commerce Rebecca Blank hosted a conference call with NGLCC, our suppliers, affiliate leaders, and members to outline items in the American Jobs Act and what those items would mean for small businesses. I think one of the biggest offerings from the NGLCC is called Supplier Diversity Initiative (SDI). The NGLCC SDI offers certification to LGBTBEs, as well as a host of opportunities to enhance each business’ visibility to corporations seeking to do business with LGBT suppliers. Corporations can search for certified LGBTBEs through our exclusive LGBT supplier database, as well as meet face-to-face with potential suppliers at NGLCC SDI matchmaking events, which are held across the country throughout the year. Certified LGBTBEs may also be eligible for scholarship programs, mentorship and leadership training, and other business development tools to help your business grow. Certification is an important marketing tool that can serve as a critical point of differentiation between your business and your competitors. What are the advantages of working within the community? The community here is always evolving and there is so much diversity all around us. Because of this, we have a wealth of businesses, both LGBT owned and LGBT friendly. We also have a lot of different organizations. Many have similar or common goals and I really want to work with those who are compatible. I also believe in giving back to the community, so it is important for us to support those organizations. On a personal level, I enjoy meeting different people and trying to understand their business goals and needs. H

DINING / RECIPE

Upscale Dining at Neighborhood Prices By RICHARD HACK Sweep into Michele’s Dining Lounge and enter a world of sophisticated elegance. Beige, browns and shades of mocha cradle customers in a warm embrace that stands in stunning denial of its strip mall home where the restaurant neighbors with a hair salon, a cigar emporium, and a day spa complete with thai massage. Inside, however, is where the magic begins. A mirrored water-wall greets you at the entrance, while subtle lighting sets the stage for what promises to be a very special occasion. This is restaurateur Michele Bonarigo’s place, and she brings no small amount of talent to the table. She grew up in upstate New York working in eateries owned by her father and uncles, and learned her lessons well. Now it’s her turn to run the show, and Michele’s Dining Lounge has found an audience of swagged guests who fill the place to capacity on Tuesday through Saturday evenings. The comprehensive menu comes equipped with clever LED lighting for the visually challenged – all the better to see the smart array of appetizers, entrees and desserts that tempt through descriptions that ooze with flavor even before you’ve made a selection. We elected to start with flash-fried calamari with a pomodoro reduction ($10), escargots en croûte ($15)—snails in puff pas-

try in any other language, and a pan-fried jumbo lump crab cake ($15) with a spicy red pepper coulis. All well-chosen selections, though slightly heavy on sauces that unnecessarily masked the delicacies of the dishes. At $24, the grilled salmon entrée was a celebration in flavors – coconut, curry, and lime accenting a flawlessly prepared six-ounce portion. The medium-rare filet blue ($34), otherwise known as nine-ounces of heaven, was served on a square white plate that accented the amazingly juicy steak, sautéed asparagus and grilled portabella mushrooms, highlighted by a blue cheese sauce that drizzled perfection. And none of us could resist tasting the roasted pork tenderloin ($24) with wilted baby arugula in an apple/fig glaze that was presented on the plate in a design worthy of an art award. We’re told the dish is a specialty of chef Michael Kridlow. We believe it! Our server recommended the Francis Ford Coppola’s Director’s Cut Cabernet Sauvignon ($13 a glass), which displayed tones of cherry and chassis, and was such an excellent complement to the meal that seconds were ordered before our plates were licked cleaned. Of course, there’s always room for dessert – at least at our table – with votes lodged for the lemon tart with raspberry sauce ($8), the apple streusel with ice cream

jean’s kitchen Chili con carne Chili con carne (often known simply as chili) is a spicy stew. The name of the dish derives from the Spanish ‘chili con carne’, “chili pepper with meat.” Traditional versions are made, minimally, from chili peppers, garlic, onions, and cumin, along with chopped or ground beef. Beans and tomatoes are frequently included. Variations, both geographic and personal, may involve different types of meat as well as a variety of other ingredients. It can be found worldwide in local variations and also in certain American-style fast food restaurants. I got this recipe from a chef and customer in the West Saloon, our Tex-Mex restaurant in Vienne, France. • 2 cans (15 ounces each) red kidney beans drained • 1 tablespoon of good olive oil • 1 large onion, quartered, sliced • 2 red bell peppers, roasted, peeled & chopped • 1 pound ground beef • 1 can (14.5 ounces) tomatoes • 1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce • 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper • 1 tablespoon cumin • 1/2 bottle of full bodied red wine (this gives a fantastic “earthy” flavor) • 1 small can of corn (optional I think it adds nice color)

• 1 1/2 teaspoons salt • 1 bay leaf In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil & brown the onion. Then add the ground beef. Cook for a few minutes. Add the tomatoes, tomato sauce, peppers, the wine and seasonings. Simmer for 1 to 2 hours. Check and stir frequently. Add the canned beans and corn and heat through. I usually serve with white rice & garnish with parsley, but, as I always say, you are the chef ! H

Why Do We Need Gay & Lesbian Film Festivals? Tampa Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, October 6 – October 16, 2011 Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, October 13 – 16, 2011 By WARREN DAY One law rules Hollywood: the films that are most likely to get made and to appear in a multiplex near you are the films with the biggest appeal to the biggest demographic in order to obtain the biggest boxoffice. Keep in mind that the majority of films lose money in their theater distribution. Under that bottom-line type thinking, it’s not only hard to get gay films financed, but to also get them shown in enough theaters to earn their money back. My hometown has over 120,000 population, and yet not even “Brokeback Mountain” and “The Kids Are All Right” were shown in any of its theaters. And in that regard it’s not unique, for it is estimated that movies with a dominant GLBT plot will not play on 70% of American movie screens. Even in gayfriendly Fort Lauderdale we’ve seen a recent shrinkage of such films due to a change in ownership of the Gateway Theater. For that and other reasons, gay and lesbian film festivals serve an important purpose in allowing us to see GLBT movies from around the world, movies we wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to see. The Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival is running October 6 through October 16, and the Fort Lauderdale Festival is October 13 through October 16. The 13th Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival was held April 21 to May 1 of this year. Orlando use to have a GLBT film festival, but it ceased two years ago.

In the Fort Lauderdale and Tampa film festivals this year several of the same movies will be shown. “Dirty Girl” (Tampa Oct. 7, FtL Oct. 13) Danielle is the dirty girl in her high school in Norman, Oklahoma. She’s sent to a remedial class where she’s paired with Clarke, a shy closet-case with no friends. The cast features Mary Steenburgen, Tim McGraw and William H. Macy. “So Hard to Forget” (Tampa Oct. 9, FtL Oct. 14) deals with the life-changing loss of a partner. Julia, a professor, loses her girlfriend when she falls for another, and Hugo, her best friend, loses his male partner in death. (Brazilian film with English subtitles.) “Going Down in La La Land” (Tampa Oct. 8, FtL Oct. 14) is an old-fashioned love story, except this one is done with rent boys and sit-com celebrities, set against the San Fernando Valley gay porn industry and ever-so-gay West Hollywood. “Tomboy” (Tampa Oct. 12, FtL Oct. 15) When ten-year old tomboy Laurie moves to a new neighborhood, the kids mistake her for a boy, a mistake she does not correct, even when Lisa develops a crush on her. A delightful and touching film. (French with sub-titles) “Hit So Hard” (Tampa Oct. 8, FtL Oct. 15) A documentary about the life and near death of Patty Schemel, the openly gay drummer of Courtney Love’s seminal band Hole, featuring home movies with Kurt Cobain and shockingly candid interviews with Courtney.

“Kink Crusaders” (Tampa Oct. 8, FtL Oct. 15) Well-made documentary that chronicles the 33-year history of the annual international Mr. Leather contest in Chicago, in what has been called the world’s oldest kink/fetish contest. “The Green” (Tampa Oct. 8, FtL Oct. 15) Fascinating and provocative drama about two men who leave the concrete of NYC for the green of an idyllic Connecticut village. Michael (played by Jason Butler Harner of “Law & Order”) is a drama teacher at a private high school who takes a strong interest in one lonely student who ends up making charges against him for “inappropriate behavior.” His partner Daniel (played by Cheyenne Jackson from “30 Rock”) comes to have doubts about his innocence once the investigation reveals a secret in Michael’s past. “eCupid” (Tampa Oct. 9, FtL Oct. 15) Love and temptation in the age of the Internet. Marshall is in a seven year relationship that has settled into a routine as has the rest of his life. At age 30 he’s having a mid-life crisis (as he says, in the gay world 30 is middle-age), which leads him to a mysterious app called eCupid, where fantasies are only a mouse click away. One of the better films being shown in the two festivals, it stars handsome newcomer Houston Rhines, and features Morgan Fairchild as the waitress who dishes out strong advice with the strong coffee. “Wish Me Away” (Tampa Oct. 11, FtL Oct. 16) Chely Wright seemed to have it all – Academy of Country Music Awards,

#1 singles, popular music videos, and a high-profile relationship with superstar Brad Paisley, but she knew she was hiding her true self. A powerful and courageous documentary about the first major country/western star to come out of the closet (she kept a video diary of the month leading up to the public announcement). Her song “Wish Me Away” deserves to be a gay anthem. For information on showtimes, ticket cost, venue locations, and all the other films in the festivals, go to their respective websites online at www.tiglff.com and www.flglff.com. While the Tampa Festival will be using two movie theaters and the city’s Museum of Art, the Fort Lauderdale Festival, outside of opening night, will be showing the other 15 films at The Manor on Wilton Drive, where they will turn the two biggest rooms into theaters with high definition projectors and large screens. The FLGLFF opening night will be at Cinema Paradiso in downtown Fort Lauderdale, and will include a reception before the film. These are once-a-year events offering films that most gays and lesbians in America won’t get a chance to see. For the personal benefits we receive and for the support they offer to our GLBT community, we should take full advantage of and give full support to such festivals. For these are our stories, the films about the unique and common experiences of our sexual orientation, and how that impedes and empowers our own life journeys. H

Celebrity Silhouette Sets Sail Part 2: Ports of Call By PAUL RUBIO Last month, I ventured to the Holy Land on the sophomore voyage of the new Celebrity Silhouette (celebritycruises.com) cruise ship. With an itinerary that includes Italy, Israel, and Greece, the ports for Celebrity’s Holy Land tour are a far cry from the cheesy same-old, same-old like Nassau and Cozumel. Two of my favorite ports are highlighted below.

Rome Never one to turn down time in the Eternal City, I often opt for a few nights of pre or post-cruise fun in Rome, the common point of embarkation for European voyages on the high seas. For my Celebrity Silhouette sailing, I arrived in Rome three days early, giving me enough time to adjust for jetlag and tear up one of my favorite cities in the world! Upon arriving, I checked into my exclusive hotel, smack in the heart of the city in the shadow of the Spanish Steps – Portrait Suites Rome (lungarnocollection.com). This exclusive fourteen room micro hotel, above Rome’s famed Ferragamo store, bursts with the eclectic personality and refinement of its shoe-making, show-stopping owner,

Santorini, Greece

Salvatore Ferragamo. These fourteen “Portrait Suites” exude understated elegance, but the best part of this hotel isn’t even the superb design-driven rooms. The view from the hotel’s rooftop lounge, exclusive to its discerning guests, is one of Rome’s most inspiring nooks. Absorbing the timeless rapture of Rome’s rooftops and the zenith of the Spanish Steps at sunrise, sunset, and every hour in between, while indulging in Portrait Suite’s fabulous full-scale rooftop honor bar, could easily go down in your personal history as your greatest moments in Rome! I did all the obligatory Rome sight seeing, including the gorgeous Trevi Fountain, camera in hand, snapping away at the hot security guards in action. I wandered for hours on what I like to call a “Piazza crawl” – losing and finding myself in and around Rome’s greatest piazzas (e.g. Navona, Venezia, and Minerva). I eventually ended up in Vatican City at St. Peter’s Basilica, splendidly quiet on a Sunday in August, giving me that much more time for sinful thoughts over the Vatican guards. Come nightfall, I was practically lip locked with the Coliseum and loving every second of it. How? It’s called AROMA (palazzomanfredi.com) – the

rooftop restaurant of the Palazzo Manfredi hotel, situated across from the Coliseum. Flush with the top arches of the historic relic, situated at just the right distance from this postcard-perfect panorama rapture, AROMA delivers a mouth watering multi-course tour de force while you gawk at the Coliseum’s authority and fantasy about its history. This intimate experience with global grandeur never grows old! What’s more? AROMA is adjacent to one of Rome’s most popular gay bars, which fills the streets on weekends and Sunday evenings.

Santorini Unlike neighboring Mykonos, Santorini is more about immersion in the foremost examples of traditional Greek architecture and culture rather than long days on the gay beach and late night parties with European couples looking for hot threesomes. Santorini is undeniably sleepy compared to Mykonos, but it’s as impressive in person as it is in postcards. When I arrived in Santorini, I took the first tender off the ship to get a head start up to the cliff tops of Fara, the island’s capital city. I wanted to climb the massive zig-

zagged staircase; but after a few dozen donkeys nearly decapitated me and I slipped on an unavoidable mound of donkey doo, I opted for the easier cable car option (an animal rights advocate, I didn’t have the heart to ride a donkey in 100 degree heat). Once on the touristy hilltop, I rented a car at Hertz for 65 euros, grabbed a map, and Santorini was my oyster. I traversed most the island in a single day, spending the majority of time in the north, at Oia, the picture-perfect town you see in every ad for Greece tourism. Blue capped, white-washed buildings stacked along the mountainside, peering over vibrant aquamarine waters, flanked by bustling tavernas and colorful small fishing boats. This is the Greece of timeless romance and unwavering culture – somehow frozen in time despite the pressures of globalization. I gorged on my best meal of 2011 at Taverna Kristina – a small restaurant on the waterfront, serving the classics better than ever– tzaziki, grilled calamari, eggplant salad, Greek salad – the works! I asked the jolly and stocky owner if she had a website to share for this travel article, but it was soon clear that nobody on this old school pier had probably ever used the internet! H

NUTRITION

FLORIDAAGENDA.COM

When Protein Becomes Poison Photo courtesy, theherbalsupplementsreview.com

Too Much of a Good Thing? By ANDY KRESS

“Eat or drink more protein!” This seems to be the motto of every bodybuilder and gym buff on how to get and keep big muscles. They seem to consume protein drinks like a magic elixir with untold powers of gaining and maintaining muscle mass. But does this really work? It’s certainly true that protein builds muscle. So the more protein we consume, the more muscles we can achieve in the shortest amount of time, right? Wrong, and I will tell you why. It’s easy to get too much of a good thing. Health food stores, supermarkets and gyms alike sell thousands and thousands of dollars worth of shakes, smoothies and nutrition bars loaded with protein. A protein bar alone typically contains 20 to

30 grams of the stuff. It seems like a great deal with all of that health in an easy-tocarry chew treat. Or perhaps you prefer to drink a wonderful smoothie after a hard workout. Twenty grams of protein – ice cold and blended in a cup to carry right out of the gym and into the light of day. Convenience in Styrofoam. And what could be simpler than a 51gram protein shake, canned or bottled, to power a workout or chug after an exercise class. Most people tend to consume these products in about 10-15 minutes. That is a huge dose of protein entering the system that needs to be broken down before it can be utilized. So what happens to this 20-51 grams of protein when it enters your body? To be sure, some of these proteins are going to repair and grow new muscle tissues to those worked muscles. That is what proteins do, of course. They are the building blocks for our muscles. Yet, as good as they are, proteins cannot be absorbed in unlimited amounts by the body. And therein lies the problem. Whatever your system does not use is going to be ultimately wasted. According to the National Academy of Sciences, the daily requirement for an average man is only 56 grams of protein. Women need

even less – 46 grams. Wow! Not a whole lot more than a single smoothie, bar or protein shake. The body can only break down five to nine grams of that protein in an hour. This means there is a tremendous amount of extra protein that the body cannot absorb. Continually trying to eliminate the excess, the body places unnecessary stress on the kidneys, a pair of organs that tend to be less productive with age. Constantly having to remove excess protein is extremely hard on these organs. Yet that is exactly what you’re doing when you consume shakes, bars and smoothies in short periods of time. A diet of more than 30% protein consumption is very deleterious to the body. Excess protein builds up toxic ketones within the body, which the kidneys must filter out through the urine, leaving the potential for possible dehydration. Additionally, with the elimination of protein comes loss of calcium. Losing calcium through urine could be potentially harmful for bone turnover, since the body tries to make up for the loss by stripping the bones of the very calcium they need to remain strong. Don’t get me wrong. I am not against any protein shakes, bars or smoothies, but do your body a favor and pace your

protein throughout the day – rather than in massive doses. You will achieve the same effect without the harm or the waste of money. And your body will thank you as your muscles grow. H

THE Q

FLORIDAAGENDA.COM

Q: What is your favorite gay-themed film? By BOB KECSKEMETY Robert Cieslak, Realtor Saved! – This movie deals with coming out and coming of age. In a way, it really hits home. I spent the entire movie laughing at the homophobic references and cried with the touching message at the end.

Vincent P. Cicenia, Retired Writer The Single Man – It reflects my life during my younger gay years. I also like Colin Firth.

Mike Rivers, Adult Film Actor Latter Days – My favorite PG13 movie. It was very moving and emotional. Of course, I need to promote myself. For an adult film, I loved “Something’s Cum Up.” It was my first dud I’ve done with the talented and amazing Chi Chi LaRue.

Con Arvello, Dispatcher Priscilla, Queen of the Desert – All the music and colorful costumes, the scenes in the Australian outback and lastly, the Abba tunes..

Bruce Bogan, Owner, CopyThis The Big Gay Musical – Very entertaining musical about life, love and relationships, A love story that can happen – funny, serious, touching and make-believe all in one.
