Gay Rights Movement May “Morph Into Something Like The KKK” By CLIFF DUNN Gay rights groups in and around Chicago are condemning the city’s Roman Catholic leader for what they say is comparing the LGBT rights movement to the Ku Klux Klan. The offending remarks from Cardinal Francis George were said during an interview on December 21 with Fox Chicago. Asked for his opinion about a local pastor’s complaints that the annual gay pride parade was forcing his parish to cancel its morning mass, George said he supported the priest’s position. Said George: "You don't want the gay liberation movement to morph into something like the Ku Klux Klan, demonstrating in the streets against Catholicism," an apparent reference to attempts by members of the National Socialist (Nazi) Party of America to march in nearby Skokie, Illinois in the late 1970s.
When pressed by the reporter, George admitted that his words were provocative, but repeated the acknowledged that it was a strong analogy, but stood by his reasoning. “The rhetoric of the KKK and the rhetoric of some of the gay liberation people -- Who is the enemy? The Catholic Church,” George reiterated. Organizers of Chicago's annual pride parade agreed on December 21 to begin the event at a later start time after officials with Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church said that to the proposed route blocked access to their parish’s Sunday Masses. Equally Blessed, a coalition of Catholic groups that advocate LGBT rights, said that Cardinal George’s remarks were “crude” and “demagogic." In a statement, the group wrote: “Cardinal George’s offen-

Schultz: Santorum Scheme Doesn’t Work For Us By RORY BARBAROSSA Member of Congress and Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz says that Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum is “un-American” for his promise to invalidate same-sex marriages that are already on the books through a federal marriage amendment. Wasserman Schultz, who represents Florida’s 20th Congressional District in the U.S. House, said during an interview at the Des Moines Convention Center on Tuesday, Jan. 3, the day of the Iowa Republican presidential caucus, that Santorum’s scheme “would be unAmerican, undemocratic, and entirely inappropriate and unacceptable.” The four-term House member was
responding to an earlier comment made by Santorum, who told NBC News’ Chuck Todd that existing same-sex marriages “would be invalid” if an amendment to the U.S. Constitutional was passed that bans marriage equality. Santorum--who narrowly lost to GOP opponent Mitt Romney in Iowa, the nation’s first statewide candidate contest- supports such an amendment. Speaking of the district she has represented since 2005, Wasserman Schultz said “I represent as a member of Congress one of the largest, most vibrant, gay communities in the entire country. I’m a supporter of same-
sex marriage and believe that we need to make sure that we stand up for equality for everyone.”

By RoRy BaRBaRossa A new European study finds that the suicide rate for transgender women who are denied breast implants is a staggering thirty times higher than for the average person. These rates reflect what researchers say is a strong need for these individuals to "fit in as women in their everyday life." The researchers from the Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Rights (RFSL) reported that transgender women can
suffer from a number of psychological problems if they are refused breast implants as an extension to hormone treatment. The data shows that this in turn translates into an alarmingly” high suicide rate, the study reported on the Swedish website, The Local. According to RFSL, the data shows that cosmetic surgery for transgender patients saves lives. The study also indicates that the suicide rate among transgender patients who are denied breast implants is 30 to 40 percent, compared with just 1.6 percent of the greater population. Petitioning Sweden’s National Board of Health and Welfare to draw up guidelines for doctors and hospitals, the group wrote, “RFSL demands that care for transgender people be given under the same conditions regardless of where one lives in Sweden.” H

Texas, a case that was decided while he was governor and struck down the state’s anti-sodomy law. According to ABC News, a voter at a meet and greet asked Perry to defend his criticism of limited government in the case. “I wish I could tell you I knew every Supreme Court case. I don’t. I’m not even going to try to go through every Supreme Court case, that would be — I’m not a lawyer,” “We can sit here and nament which is sanctioned by the International Gay Bowling Organization (IGBO). DAYTONA BEACH, FL – The 5th District Court of Appeals in Daytona Beach, Florida ruled that both members of a lesbian couple have equal parental rights over their child. The ruling overturned a lower court decision claiming that only the birth mother had rights to raise the child. One of the two women donated the egg which was fertilized then implanted

Texas in his 2010 book “Fed Up!,” calling it one of the court cases in which “Texans have a different view of the world than do the nine oligarchs in robes.” H

HRC Announces Best Big U.S. Companies for LGBT Employees WASHINGTON, D.C. – According to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) latest survey, Chevron, Bank of America and AT&T all get top mark as the best workplaces for LGBT employees. The Human Rights Campaign is the nation’s biggest advocacy and lobbying group that backs civil rights for LGBT people. Of the 20 largest American companies by revenues, ten got scores of “100,” meaning they met all of the HRC’s Corporate Equality Index criteria for providing an inclusive, discrimination-free work environment. The toprated big companies cover a range of industries, from finance to automobiles to technology and health care. Ford Motor, Cardinal Health and IBM also got top ratings. The index looks at discrimination policies that protect employees based on sexual orientation and gender identity, at insurance and other benefits for same sex partners, and at companies’ abilities to recruit and retain LGBT workers. This is the tenth year HRC has done the survey, which has expanded from rating the 500 biggest U.S. companies
to evaluating a total of 850 businesses, including more than 200 law firms. A decade ago, just 13 businesses got a top score. This year, 190 did. HRC made its evaluation more stringent than in years past, rating companies on 40 different policies and practices, 32 of which were new or stricter. For instance, this year for the first time, companies had to include insurance coverage for gender reassignment surgery in order to get a top rating. Among the big companies that earned a score of 100, a spokeswoman at Citigroup says that its coverage of transgender insurance benefits is new this year. JP Morgan Chase has offered the coverage since 2009. A total of 207 companies surveyed are offering the gender reassignment coverage or will do so as of next year. ExxonMobil had the poorest showing, with a rating of negative 25. A representative of the HRC explained that in 1999 when Exxon acquired Mobil Oil, Exxon did away with Mobil’s nondiscrimination policy that included sexual orientation and it offered domestic partner benefits. Exxon has since opposed shareholder resolutions to restore the old policy and benefits. H

2011 LGBT Year in Review The State, The Nation and The World... By CLIFF DUNN By nearly any yardstick, 2011 was a tumultuous year for LGBT rights. In Florida, the courts upheld the constitutionality of gay adoptions. Nationally, on Sept. 20, the White House announced the final dismantling of the Pentagon’s 20 year-old Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT) policy, to the applause and dismay of Americans of virtually all political stripes. The point was driven home in November with the “kiss seen ‘round the world” between U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta and Petty Officer 3rd Class Citalic Snell. Also last year, as Proposition 8 opponents and supporters in California take their collective legal and election battles to the next ballot
referendum, New York lawmakers, Republicans as well as Democrats, approved marriage equality in the Empire State on June 24. On the international front, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton illustrated in clear language that the Obama administration has drastically changed its foreign policy relating to gay rights in a historic speech in Geneva, Switzerland on Dec. 6. Recognizing that homosexuality is still criminal in 76 countries, Clinton urged the world’s leaders to grant LGBT people “the full measure of liberty, the full experience of dignity, and the full benefits of humanity.” Echoing Obama’s shift and Clinton’s injunctions, the UN Human Rights Council for the first time in history passed a resolution supporting global LGBT rights, expressing “grave concern at acts of violence and discrimination, in all regions of the world, committed against individuals because of their sexual orientation and gender identity.” Elsewhere internationally, British Prime Minister David Cameron announced his commitment to a course of “how, not if” in implementing full civil marriage rights for LGBT couples, and to have the legislation in place within the lifetime of the current parliament. In Australia, the governing Labor Party also announced its support for full marriage equality. H

Noble and online retailer Amazon.com have pulled the calendar produced by Christian cartoonist Joe King, “I’m Not Gay, I’m Just a Sissy: 12 Months of Sexual Confusion.” After complaints from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), Barnes & Nobel has removed the calendar from their website. It is still available through Amazon.com. In addition to rehashing effeminate stereotypes,
GLAAD says that the calendar lampooned people living with HIV/AIDS. On an apparent roll, the self-proclaimed Christian cartoonist added, “The ‘truth’ is that AIDS is an "elective" disease. It STOPS the day guys quit sticking it to each other. And for the tragedy of women and children infected... THAT stops the day their gay husbands and fathers stop cheating on them. Anyone need MORE education, science or funding to understand THAT?"H

Pay It Forward The 16th century English scholar John Selden didn’t think it was a good idea to announce one’s New Year’s resolutions: doing so makes it “twice as onerous a duty,” he advised. With this in mind, I think most of us would agree that it isn’t what one says one is going to do that matters, but rather the actual doing of the deed, and what one is actually getting done. In the last year, I became acquainted with an organization of gay men of means who nearly a quarter century ago decided to direct some of their charitable efforts towards helping HIV/AID patients in rural America, where medical and other services were much harder to obtain than in, say, New York City, or Greater Fort Lauderdale. These men, led by the visionary Cliff Pettit, formed the Gamma Mu Foundation, and their combined generos-

ity and fund-raising has resulted in $1.5 million in total grants and scholarships being awarded to not-for-profit groups and deserving students who will in turn use that seed money to feed indigent PWAs, or pursue educational opportunities that might not otherwise have been available. This past year, the Foundation donated $110,000 in grants and scholarship moneys. Gamma Mu Foundation, in short, is
mixing two of my favorite metaphors: showing a person the proper way to fish, so he can feed himself for a lifetime, as it were; and they are paying it forward. How many opportunities will each of us have to pay something forward over the course of the next 361 days? Without meaning to, Your Kindly Editor will likely step on about two hundred ants on the way home this evening; it can’t be avoided in a place with as much greensward as tropical South Florida. But assuming the Mayans got it wrong, and December 22 comes around as scheduled (at least on the Gregorian calendar), what would YOU like to have paid forward by year’s end? An idea whose time has come, constructive praise or criticism, even the occasional charitable gift, as resources and faculties permit. In response to the cover story “Orlando’s Partner Registry” in the Florida Agenda, December 29, 2011. DEAR EDITOR, The story in your December 29 issue about Orlando’s same-sex partner registry (Dec. 29, 2011: “Orlando Partner Registry has no Shortage of Applicants, Floridians or Otherwise”) put me in mind of those supermarkets that ask you to swipe a “fob” at the cash register in order to receive a discount, or earn extra coupons, or green stamps, etc. My boyfriend loves to ask the cashier why we have to belong to their “stupid club” (his words) and clutter up our key chains just to pay the same price for eggs or laundry detergent that everyone else is paying. I think you can see my point here. Although I’m perfectly happy to pay nine cents less for a five-pound tub of margarine, shouldn’t everyone have to/get to pay the same price, regardless of one’s preference to key-chain fobs? The fact that Orlando’s leaders are both gay-friendly and long-viewed doesn’t minimize the huge disappointment and dismay I experience to know that this is just another in a long list of feel-good “booby prizes” like civil unions, domestic partner lists, and half the programming on Bravo-TV to keep “The Gays” happy, mollified, content, and, oh yes, voting Democratic. (No, Virginia, there is no Santa Claus here for the Republicans: I keep a picture of Dick Armey in my garage to remind me of his ‘big-tented’ “Barney Fag” comment from the 1990s.) I don’t want to sound ungrateful. Any strides made in this direction are naturally “good” strides. But I still feel kind of ‘icky’ in a Step-and-Fetch-It way when I think of how well-meaning “The Straights” are to grant us the same benefits (access to hospital visits, medical care, etc.) that I already enjoy at the animal clinic with respect to my Pekinese.

DEAR EDITOR: I just received a mail piece (or was it an email) reminding me that PrideFest 2012 is just around the corner, with an appearance by musical headliner Taylor Dayne! Spoiler Alert: I am a gay man, proud and happy to report that all of the people in my life who matter to me the most (parents, employer, minister, mailman, etc.) know about my lifestyle and consider me with the same love and affection (and on occasion, the lack of same) that they reserve for my hetero siblings. My partner and I hold hands (when appropriate) not just in the “gayborhood,” but at the mall, going into restaurants or movies, etc. It “ain’t no thing” to the vast majority of people we encounter, and I know in my heart and mind that I owe many of the trappings of tolerance to those pioneering LGBTs like Harvey Milk, and Harry Hay, and others who came before me. I also put my money where my mouth is when it comes to HIV/AIDS service organizations and helping those members of my community less advantaged than me. This is a long way of saying that, while I am “proud” to be a gay man, at this stage in my life, and the life of our community, are events like Pridefest and Stonewall Pride still relevant? At a time when Disney and the rest of Central Florida unofficially “hosts” Gay Days for God’s sake (sorry , Fred Phelps), and young gays parade thong-side next to Mickey and Minnie at the Grand Resort pool, isn’t there a better way to spend our time, efforts, and resources than on events that are ‘quaint’ and ‘’ at best. I love my

Good Cop Bad Cop By AJ CROSS I have just finished reviewing the most recent Brady List. This is the Broward County State Attorney’s list of active cases against sworn law enforcement officers. According to the current review, the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) had the most active cases with deputies, sergeants, and a few Detectives making the list. Law enforcement agencies including Wilton Manors, Seminole Police, and Lauderhill were on the list as well. Fort Lauderdale came in second. The ranking is solely based on the large size of both the BSO and FLPD. The list of charges is shocking, and includes drug dealing, human trafficking, falsifying records, stalking, kidnapping, sexual assault, attempted murder, insurance fraud, grand theft, making false statements to the FBI, and others. The report reads like a laundry list of major crimes perpetrated by those sworn to protect civilians and enforce the law. Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti and Fort Lauderdale Police Chief Frank Adderley have strong positions regarding police misconduct and accountability. You may recall that Chief Adderley himself was investigat-
ed for possible misconduct regarding the Scott Rothstein case. Adderly cooperated fully with the investigation and insisted upon an open-airing of all his actions and decisions. Adderly’s accountability showed a top cop putting his money where his mouth. It had a positive effect on department morale, and thankfully, he was cleared of any wrong doing. The question remains, though, that with so many officers simply not living up to their sworn duty, and with an increase in reports of corruption by law enforcement officers, who watches the watchers? The Civilian Police Boards have no real power, possessing the authority to merely review whatever information is provided to them by police internal investigations. There is no true civilian watchdog of law enforcement. Critics say that the Brady List is shorter than it should be, with close to 200 active cases unreported. They say this is because the state attorney’s office does not want to give an accurate picture of how many police officers are
actually being investigated. Is this for fear that the information would cause panic, unrest, or lack of confidence in local law enforcement? Maybe. But even if that was the case, the list is certainly bad enough. I know many cops personally, and I respect what they do and who they are as individuals. I feel great anger on their behalf whenever a bad cop thinks that he or she is somehow above the law. I think it is high-time to create an External Affairs Department, with the authority to investigate misconduct and crimes by law enforcement: a separate entity not con-

trolled by the State Attorney or an agency they are investigating, totally impartial and reporting directly to the City Manager or Commission. Even were such a board not to oversee arrests or prosecution, a separate apparatus would be a mark of both fairness and transparency. I do not know if this is a permanent solution, but as the list criminals with badges and guns grows, something cries for justice. It is unfair to honest cops and their image, and a blow to public trust. To those good cops on the streets, thank you for your service, integrity and commitment to public service. H

Two More Say “I Do”: Delaware And Hawaii Same Sex Couples Form “More Perfect” Unions By RoRy BaRBaRossa Four Hawaii same-sex couples entered into civil unions early on New Year’s Day as a new statewide law took effect. The couples--Monica Montgomery and Donna Gedge, Saralyn Batt and Isajah Morales, Gary Bradley and Paul Perry, and Bonnie Limatoc-DePonte and Lydia Pontin--became the first to legally wed as Hawaii began to legally recognize same-sex civil unions. The law allows both same-sex and opposite-sex couples to join in civil unions. These unions possess the
same rights and responsibilities that come with traditional marriages. With Hawaii and Delaware marching down the aisle to recognition on Jan. 1, there are now five states that recognize same-sex civil unions. Six states and the District of Columbia give outright same-sex marriage licenses: Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Washington, D.C. California does not recognize new same-sex marriages. In May 2008, the
state's Supreme Court ruled that gay couples have the right to marry in California. Later that year, opponents of same-sex marriage secured passage of Proposition 8, a state constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman. A federal judge ruled in 2010 that Proposition 8 violated the U.S. Constitution. Enforcement of that ruling was stayed pending appeal. The passage of the laws in both Hawaii and Delaware were not without debate and compromise. Lawmakers in both states made it plain that "it is not the legislature's intent to revise the definition or eligibility requirements of marriage." Calling it “a prime example of exercising civic courage,” Hawaii Gov. Neil
Abercrombie, a Democrat, signed the state's civil unions bill into law last February. “It is about doing what is right, no matter how difficult, no matter how much opposition,” Abercrombie added. Gov. Jack Markell, a Democrat, signed the Delaware law in May saying boldly, "This bill is about a new energy and excitement. It's about a moment in our history that came about because people came together to work for it, because it became clear that Delaware's LGBT community is in fact part of every Delaware community. The greater good is served when we speak out and fight hard when we see that bias, prejudice or even outdated laws attempt to lessen any one of us."H

Personal Reflections On
2011 Everyone looks towards the New Year as being better than the last – I am no different. The year 2010 was what I thought was a rough one so I looked forward to 2011 with great optimism. After all, what could have been worse than 2010? I soon found out. I was at most major community events. I lived in the gay community. I was out there photographing, videoing, writing and reporting on the community for the last 25 years for just about every gay publication in the area at one time or another. I started feeling ill in the summer of 2010. I knew I was under a lot of stress especially after having helped plan the Stonewall Festival in Wilton Manors. This, following the very successful “Wicked Manors” the October before, the last year “The Drive” had been shut down to car traffic on Halloween. By the time the end of 2010 rolled around, I was having every little symptom of being sick you can imagine, but none of them at the same time. Some days I would have the chills, some days I would be very tired, some days I would be lightheaded, some days other little symptoms, or I would feel just fine. But the temperatures were colder than normal over the holidays, so I thought I was just fighting off the flu because everybody was coming down with something. I attended New Year’s Eve festivities in the Shoppes of Wilton Manors with no

problem but within a few days, all of the symptoms – plus many more – started to attack me all at once. So bad in fact, I was taken to the emergency room on January 10 and just in time since I collapsed while in the waiting room. I was admitted and went through the normal pre-examination “vitals”: temperature was high, blood pressure was high. The nurse removed my shoes and stated, “oh my god.” I thought she was talking about foot odor but no, she pointed out that my feet were orange and very swollen. The next thing out of her mouth was “kidneys.” Emergency testing of my blood showed that indeed my kidneys had failed and the toxins had built up to critical levels. I met my first doctor who told me had I waited another 24 hours, I would have died. I went through quick surgery to make preparations for kidney dialysis. I spent the next three weeks in the hospital as the doctors checked everything out. In addition to the kidney problems, they discovered bladder cancer. I was told not to be too concerned with the bladder at this time as it’s a very tough organ but they needed to rid my body of the toxins with dialysis and treatment first, then take care of the bladder. $233,000 dollars later, I went home, continued with dialysis three times a week and was scheduled to return to the hospital in April to remove the bladder. The doctor told me that, though it is rare,
the kidneys have been known to come back to life to some degree in some cases, but warned me not to count on it. At first, the dialysis was helping and, though I felt weak immediately after treatment, I was feeling much better. Then, I started feeling worse than ever before and started to lose weight fast – too fast – in fact, I lost 110 pounds in three months and my blood toxin levels started to go crazy and I was often feeling worse than ever. The doctors didn’t seem concerned, so neither was I. When I returned to the hospital in April for the bladder removal, initial tests showed that my kidneys had started to function at a very limited basis. My left kidney was literally dead with only

everyone should acquire.) Then there are those that would regularly call or email to find out how I was doing like Nicky Rose, Pompano Bill, Shane Phoenix, Gary Resnick, Julie Carson, Dale Madison, Eric Reivik and there are dozens and dozens more that I just don’t have enough space to list. And then, there are those that have purposely avoided contact me fearing the worse and perhaps fearing their own mortality. Recently I ran into Victor Cody who confessed to me that he has been afraid to see me not knowing how I would look and was surprised how much better looking I was then he thought and said how glad he was to see me again. For those of you who have avoided me not
“Though I Am Sick, I’m Getting Better... and I’m not going anywhere...” working at around 1% efficiency; my right kidney was now working at around 38% - enough to operate on their own. The reason I was feeling so bad was because both the kidney dialysis machine and my internal kidneys were fighting each other over control of my body. Though my kidneys were partially working, dialysis was no longer needed. It was also decided that since the kidneys were working again, we should try to save the bladder and cure than cancer instead of just removing it right off. However, what was also discovered was that I also had bone cancer in my hip. As the year progressed, I’ve been off dialysis and I’ve been going through chemotherapy for the cancers. This past October, scans, prods, probes and tests show that the bladder cancer is in remission, but the bone cancer has somewhat spread. Again, my oncologist has told me that there are different treatments for bone cancer that we haven’t tried yet. I am now going through the second regiment of chemo drugs which are rougher on my body. Being cynical by nature, I’ve learned some important lessons this past year. First, I’ve learned to appreciate life and what life has to offer. Things that I would normally stress over--and I can’t afford any stress, now--I’ve learned to brush off. Second, I’ve learned to take life slower, but then again, I really didn’t have much of a choice. Finally, I’ve realized what great friends I have and my huge support group. There are those people that didn’t walk, but came running to my side as soon as I took ill like Brad Casey, Tim Yatteau, Ryan Dixon, Sheri Elfman, Dan Renzi and Robert Cieslak. There are also those who were able to give me great advice to follow concerning my mental and physical state like Terry DeCarlo, Paul Hyman, Peter Clark, and longtime friend Norm Kent. Florida Agenda publisher Bobby Blair never lost faith in me and, through it all, I never missed writing in a single issue of the newspaper and also accepted my new, limited physical abilities. (Learning to type on a laptop while lying in bed is a skill that
wanting to deal with reality of a person who was sick, don’t worry - I was one of you up to this year – I just couldn’t deal. Then, there were the surprises. Shortly after this past Halloween on Wilton Drive, it was brought to my attention someone wrote on the local blog, “Wilton Drive Online,” about how disappointed they were over what has happened to the annual big event. Someone suggested that the person (which was me) who used to handle the party start doing it again. Someone else replied that the person who used to do Wicked Manors was named Bob – but he died. I, of course, replied myself saying that, though sick, I was still alive--all while laughing to myself about the situation. Then again, I laughed too at the appropriateness of a dead person running a Halloween party. Was I upset? No. In fact, I was flattered knowing that the community really appreciated the hard work put into large public events. The other night, longtime friend Ellen Friedman, who has also had her health problems, took me out for a holiday dinner that I will forever remember. As we sat there talking, I told her that I didn’t realize how many people would have cared what happened to me and how many friends I really have. She said to me, which prompted this piece, “Bob, they’ve been there all along. You’ve just been too blind to see them.” Though I am sick, I’m getting better slowly; sometimes painfully, but I’m not going anywhere. I wish I could go out more, but my body starts to wind down around two in the afternoon. Each year, I write a feature in the last issue of the year for whatever publication I have worked for, getting New Year’s resolutions from people in the community, and though I would have like to have gotten many more for the last week’s issue of the Agenda than I did, I was too weak to continue. One person, who I asked for his resolution a week ago, turned the tables on me and asked me what my New Year’s resolution was. I simply replied, “2013.”H

“And Venus Is Her Name” By NICHOLAS SNOW Floridian Venus Perez, a forty-something Latina who has been HIV positive for over two decades holds among her role models, not surprisingly, her medical team. About the 2nd edition of her sought-after book, “I’m Still Here,” she explained, “We have come so far yet we are not quite there. Many lives were lost yet many still live. Many know the means of transmission, yet many neglect to follow it. Many of us live the fast life, looking for excitement, for success.” Venus was swept away at the age of 19 by a 27-year-old man in the greater New York area where she had been born and raised. “I allowed him into my life at a very vulnerable time… The relationship became intimate, and I never practiced safe sex,” she confided.
Ultimately, as Venus explained, “I reluctantly broke off my relationship… After the breakup, I never heard from or saw him again.” In 1986 Venus met and began to date a nice guy. A year later, on February 14th, 1987--Valentine’s Day--her boyfriend delivered the life-shaking news: “After handing me a gift, he held my hand, and said to me, ‘I have very serious information. Your exboyfriend died of AIDS.’ I asked him to repeat what he had said, and he did. I was silent. ‘This can’t be true,’ I thought.” Her life changed forever. After more dramatic twists and turns as revealed in her book, Venus explains, “I had to decide whether I was going to fight or give up. Did I have enough fight in me to fight the good
fight? I had to find a feasible method to give it my best shot. I didn’t want to give up. I decided I wanted to live! Even though the results were grim, I wanted to try.” “Nobody would know by looking at me that I had HIV,” Venus shared about finding a support group. “We were newly diagnosed individuals with HIV (asymptomatic, showing no symptoms of the disease). There were fifteen people who attended that day. I cannot express how it felt to experience the long suffering and sadness and then the newfound release. We developed meaningful friendships and relationships. We supported each other through good times and bad.”

Just Call It F lorida-Gate” New Bio Says Nixon was “Tricky” with Best Pal in Key Biscayne By CLIFF DUNN A new biography by former White House reporter Don Fulsom claims that former President Richard Nixon had a homosexual relationship with a close friend suspected of underworld ties. “Nixon's Darkest Secrets: The Inside Story of America's Most Troubled President” offers what the author claims is strong evidence of Nixon’s gay relationship with Miami businessman and reputed Mafia associate Charles “Bebe” Rebozo. In the tell-all bio Fulsom, a former United Press International Washington bureau chief, writes that Tricky Dick maintained mob ties for over two decades prior to his election as president in 1968. Fulsom claims that Nixon’s ties to Rebozo were more than businessrelated. The book claims that Nixon and Rebozo, a playboy believed by the feds to have laundered money for mob bosses in Florida and Cuba, swam, spent their time together sunbathing and frolicking at the president’s private sanctuary, the Winter White House on Key Biscayne. Fulsom, who also covered the Johnson, Ford, Reagan, and Clinton presidencies for UPI, writes that a Washington reporter once spotted a drunken Nixon snuggling with Rebozo "the way you'd cuddle your senior prom date." The two were also seen holding hands under a table during a dinner with Washington insiders. The book is based on Fulson’s years of covering the White House for UPI, as well as interviews with former White House staffers, friends of Nixon and his wife, and former members of Congress. Nixon’s friendship with Rebozo was a matter of record for years, and Fulsom claims that some Washington insiders believed the two were much more than friends until the time of Nixon's death in 1994. White House aides claimed that Rebozo was nothing more than "the guy who mixed the martinis," but the CubanAmerican businessman, who died in 1998, was by Nixon’s side until the end. In addition to engaging in the “love that dares not speak its name,” the book alleges that the 37th president drank liquor copiously, earning the nickname "Our Drunk" from his own staff in the process, and abused his wife, First Lady Pat Nixon. Fulsom writes that behind closed doors, Nixon called his wife a “f----- b----” and physically abused her before, during and after his presidency.H

Utah Unleashed Part I: Capitol Reef & Torrey By PaUL RUBIo
A ruddy, rugged land imaginatively painted by the geological time clock, Utah boasts some of the world’s most unsurpassed natural beauty. Though the homophobic rhetoric of the LDS church and HBO’s Big Love have made Utah a household name for the GLBT community, there’s far more to the Mormon-centric state than meets the cautious queer eye. The all-welcoming, towering collections of weather-torn sandstone that have formed nature’s Wild West playground of canyons, arches, and promontories are indeed some of Earth’s most breathtaking landscapes. A land of “cowboys and Indians” comes to life traversing the great distances between hamlets dotting the sparsely populated state, with historic trading posts and random watering holes revealing glimpses of a time bygone. Rustic lodges dole out world-class luxury amidst the craggy, mountainous terrain. And trepidation of Salt Lake City fades after experiencing the silent GLBT revolution of the state capital, where a blossoming gay population is successfully making its way with a mini-gayborhood, awesome gay bars, trendy hotels, and plenty of fair-skinned hotties eager to unbutton their “magic underwear” (Google for added explanation). Over the next few issues, we’ll be
looking at some of Utah’s greatest natural wonders and points of interest for the intrepid GLBT traveler, from the stunning rock formations of Capitol Reef National Park to the Wild West’s Monument Valley to the impressive arches near Moab to pockets of big city sophistication in Salt Lake City! Get ready for Utah unleashed! Capitol Reef National Park In the heart of southern Utah’s canyon lands, Capitol Reef National Park (nps.gov/care) comprises 378 square miles of multihued canyons, ridges, buttes (pun intended), and monoliths, doling out spectrums of reds and oranges in coral-reef like formations you never dreamed possible. These jagged edges of glowing sandstone, defined by a 100mile long warp in the Earth’s crust known as Waterpocket Fold, begin to take center stage heading towards the town of Torrey, reaching scenic Highway 24 roughly 3.5 hours south of Salt Lake City. One of Utah’s lesser-known national parks, Capitol Reef is a prime opportunity for personal bonding with Mother Nature. In what feels like your own private land of canyons, ridges, and domes, Earth’s essence proves boundless whether hiking the steep 3.5 mile trail to Chimney Rock, a weathered layered sandstone obelisk, capturing
the sun’s late PM radiance at Sunset Point or traipsing through the beginner’s 1 mile path to Hickman Bridge, an impressive natural arch in a scenic side canyon far above the Fremont River. Blink quickly and you might miss the chipmunks, squirrels, birds, hawks, eagles, and lizards, eager to greet you or soaring above you. Or you might overlook the stunning petro glyphs, linking the park to its rich Native-American history. More experienced hikers will be handsomely rewarded with Capitol Reef’s near-dozen moderate and strenuous hiking trails. But even keeping to the Capitol Reef basics-the winding roads, hairpin turns and short trails of the park’s ten-mile paved “scenic drive”--you’ll experience exquisite rock formations producing an array of vibrant and contrasting earthly colors. Some of these rock formations have been weathered to resemble their given names of “The Castle” and “The Egyptian Temple.” These natural formations play out like works of natural art, easily venerated for hours and photographed ad nauseam. Torrey Post mind-boggling days exploring Capitol Reef, the superlative way to relax in comfort and share your Utah experience with other fellow travelers is an overnight stay or two at the nearby Lodge at Red River Ranch (redriverranch.com) ($150$245 per night) along Highway 24’s Pony Express Route. Meals are capped with homemade ice creams and gastronomic ingenuity from the in-house pastry team. Of note, Diablo remains open only during peak season from mid-April to late October, so plan accordingly.

RESOLUTIONS FOR A HEALTHY NEW YEAR By TOM BONANTI
As we say good-bye and good riddance to 2011, let’s really get psyched with the prospects and promise of a great 2012! So why not start by making a few resolutions that will guarantee your chances of living a happy, healthy life. Sure, quitting smoking, cutting back on internet hook-ups, and eating less junk food are cool places to start. But instead of dwelling on doing without, why not accentuate the positive. So here’s to the New Year and a happier, more youthful new you! Resolution #1: Eat a Healthy Breakfast Breakfast eaters are champions of good health. Research shows people who have a morning meal tend to take in more vitamins and minerals, and less fat and bad cholesterol. The result is a leaner body, mountains of energy, a lower cholesterol count and less chance of over-eating later in the day. The Mayo Clinic (prestigious!) recommends eating a variety of foods (steel cut oatmeal, whole grain toast, yogurt, fresh fruit) rich in protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats. Resolution #2: Reassess Your Training Regime Periodize your training schedule for optimum results this year. Look upon the year ahead as one big macrocycle with goals and objectives such as getting your body fat down below say 18% and putting on maybe 5 lbs of muscle. Break down the bigger cycle into mesocycles of maybe 3 to 4 month periods of time. Assess your progress, vary your workouts, and stay consistent with your workouts. Read, take measurements regularly and fine-tune your goals throughout the year. This way you won’t get bored, you’ll see progress and you’re sure to get the most from each hour in the gym! Resolution #3: Get Some Sleep Getting 7 to 10 hours of uninterrupted sleep is essential to your physical and mental health. Besides making you cranky and exhausted, other symptoms of poor sleep or lack of sleep can be depression, memory loss,
migraine headaches, weight gain and paranoia. So why not relax, take a load off and hit the sack early? Resolution #4: Stay Active It’s a given that physical activity has a bounty of benefits, so why are 60% of all Americans couch potatoes? You don’t have to be a marathon runner or a muscle head who lives in a gym, but at the very least, get up and do something! Regular exercise (anaerobic weight training and aerobic cardio training) helps control weight, maintains healthy bones, muscles and joints, reduces the risk of high blood pressure and diabetes and death from heart disease. Besides these bonuses, exercise is the only way to get a tight, toned body and have fun at the same time Resolution #5: Protect Your Skin Your skin begins to age the moment you are born, so the best way to protect it and look younger is to stay out of the sun. In order to avoid some of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays, which can cause wrinkles and skin cancer, observe the following: always wear sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher; wear a hat and other protective clothing; don’t deliberately sun-bathe; avoid sun exposure between 10 AM and 3 PM. Resolution #6: Snack Healthy and Often Remember to eat frequently throughout the day, several small meals consisting of a 3-2-1 ratio of carbs, protein and healthy fats. Avoid monster meals especially late in the day. Eat several servings of fruit and vegetables early in the day. Make sure to eat protein after your workouts which facilitates muscle recovery and growth. The New Year ahead is filled with possibilities and excitement. burgers are served with fries. My partner’s eye was caught by an Herb Marinated Skirt Steak ($19) near the bottom of the menu. It was a 10 oz. skirt steak served with steak fries, Brussels sprout hash, arugula salad, and beef jus. Creative fun plating came through again when our entrees arrived. My burger offered an array of flavors with the sweetness of the bourbon onions playing off the tanginess of the tomato jam. The burger itself was perfectly grilled to my medium request—juicy and full of flavor. A beautifully medium pink sliced skirt steak graced my b/f’s plate. It was spicy, but not overly so, still allowing the flavor of the beef to shine through. He particularly enjoyed the Brussels sprout hash, saying it was different as well as delicious. Between mouthfuls we assured Savannah that we were greatly pleased with our choices. Will we go back to Tap 42? Most definitely, and that’s perhaps the highest compliment a patron can give a restaurant. It has a friendly staff that fit the high energy, urban vibe of the room. The bourbon and craft beer list have thought, whimsy, and creativity behind them. The food was creative, fun, and, most of all, delicious. I look forward to my next visit.

Those of you with a history in Fort Lauderdale will remember the old Brownie’s on South Andrews. It was legendary; it was an institution. The old Brownie’s is now the new Tap 42, opened since mid-November. For years burgers were relegated to fast food spots. That was then. Tap 42 serves new style burgers, truly gourmet. In the 40’s and 50’s, classic cocktails made with bourbon, such as the classic Manhattan, were all the rage. Then vodka took over. Bourbon is new again--42 varieties in fact--at Tap 42. Beer was once America’s drink of choice. Then wine surpassed it. At Tap 42, 42 draft beers, most of them craft beers and small production, have all the nuances and flavor profiles of fine wine. Everything old is indeed new again. On a recent Monday night with a slight chill in the air and a rather strong breeze, the b/f and I decided to check out Tap 42. We had heard great buzz about it and decided to go see for ourselves what was all about. First, the renovation on the old Brownie’s is nothing short of stunning. A long bar with several high top and dining tables along the wall give Tap 42 a very urban, sleek look. There is an outdoor area of the bar along with a patio in the back for taking advantage of our great South Florida winter weather. First impression: Excellent!

THIS WEEK’S TASTY RECIPE: Irish Mousse By JEaN DoHERTy If you are in France, no matter which region, no matter where you eat, you will most likely be offered the divine French dessert Mousse au Chocolat. No matter how it looks on paper, "Mousse" is the French word for "foam." You can find hundreds of different versions of the original recipe for this chocolate delight in cookbooks everywhere. Some boast fancy ingredients like alcohol, peppermint, oranges or even marshmallows. Some are made with complicated directions that use three or four different bowls. I always play around with recipes, so here’s what I’ve come up with: 3 egg yolks 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup sifted cocoa 2 tbsp Baileys® Irish Cream or similar liqueur 2 cups heavy whipping cream ¼ tsp vanilla extract In a medium bowl, beat the egg yolks and sugar until blended thoroughly. Then beat in the cocoa and Irish Cream. (If you‘re concerned about illness caused by consuming raw eggs, I suggest putting the mixture in a “bain Marie” and heating for 5 minutes, stirring constantly.) In a different bowl, whip cream and vanilla
until it holds stiff peaks. Stir in approximately 1/2 cup of the whipped cream to lighten the cocoa mixture. Fold in remaining mixture gently. Divide into individual servings and chill for about an hour. Serve with a dollop of whipped cream and garnish with chocolate shavings or a confectioner coffee bean....you are a chef!
