never stopped fighting for the rights of homosexuals, both in the military and in the workplace. In the same year, Kameny joined Jack Nichols to form the Mattachine Society of Washington, DC. In 1965, he led the first pro-gay demonstration in front of the White House. Hand-painted signs used in the protest for equal rights now hang in the Smithsonian Institution. Coining the phrase “Gay is Good,” Kameny demanded and received the right to speak at the American Psychiatric Association’s annual meeting in 1971, challenging the association’s theory that homosexuality was a sickness. The same year, he founded the Gay Activists Alliance (now the Gay and Lesbian Activist Alliance). Kameny was also the co-founder of the National Gay Task Force and the National Gay Rights Lobby. “As we say goodbye to a trailblazer on National Coming Out Day,” Solmonese said, “we remember the remarkable power we all have to change the world by ‘FRANK KAMENY’ continues on Page 9

Leading Legal Figure Remembered Paula L. Ettelbrick, Prominent Gay Rights Leader Dies at Age 56 By ALEX VAUGHN Paula L. Ettelbrick, who was a leading legal figure in the lesbian and gay civil rights movement and who focused on defining “family” in the broadest possible way, passed away on Friday in New York. She was 56 and lived in Manhattan and Yonkers. The primary cause of her death was peritoneal cancer, said Suzanne B. Goldberg, her ex-partner, with whom she had been raising two children. Ettelbrick’s career included leadership positions in some of the most influential LGBT rights groups of the past 25 years: the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Ettelbrick had a prominent voice in pushing the fact that there were many types of families created by homosexuals
who all deserved acceptance and protection. However her views had put her at odds on more than one occasion with other lesbian and gay leaders over samesex marriage and how much political capital should be spent in its pursuit. “When analyzed from the standpoint of civil rights, certainly lesbians and gay men should have the right to marry,” she wrote in the fall 1989 issue of Out/Look Magazine as part of a debate with Thomas B. Stoddard, a colleague at Lambda who strongly favored same-sex marriage. “But obtaining a right does not always result in justice.” Ettelbrick continued, “Justice for gay men and lesbians will be achieved only when we are accepted and supported in this society despite our differences from

Frank Kameny 1925 - 2011
Frank Kameny, a pioneer in the gayrights movement, and the father of gayactivism, died October 11 from natural causes in his Washington, DC home. He was 86. “Frank Kameny led an extraordinary life marked by heroic activism that set a path for the modern LGBT civil rights movement,” Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solomese stated. “From his early days fighting institutionalized discrimination in the federal workforce, Dr. Kameny taught us all that ‘Gay Is Good.’” After serving in the Army in World War II, and earning a PhD from Harvard University, Kameny took a civil service position with the U.S. Army Map Service in Washington. Soon thereafter, he was questioned about his homosexuality and judged unfit for federal employment. Determined to fight what he saw as discrimination, he argued his case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, where, in 1961, he brought the first civil rights claim in a U.S. court based on sexual orientation. While Kameny lost the petition, he

About 4,000 people come out with their dogs each year. “So I figured,” said Wedner, “I think it’s something that will grow and we’ll have lots of fun with it.” H
Orlando Pride Postponed ORLANDO, FL – Last weekend’s “Come Out with Pride” Orlando Gay Pride celebration at Lake Eola was postponed due to inclement weather. Orlando Pride wants to assure the community that they are working feverishly to set a new date for the big event. They released the following written statement: “First, it takes a few people at the city level to look at the open dates at the park but also, on a larger scale, in the whole downtown area. The Orlando Police Department, for instance, only has so many officers it can detach to an event so if there are too many events happening in one day, the city council can’t approve the permit. Lake Eola, which is home to Orlando Pride, is also very booked. This means choices are scarce. Right now, we want to thank everyone at the City who are working extra hard at making this happen as soon as possible.” H
Wilton Manors Extends Halloween Hours, Free Parking

Other entertainment is still being negotiated. Among those judging the costume contest is fashion designer Jay Carroll, the winner of the first season of the television series, “Project Runway.” Costume contest categories include Best Outrageous Fantasy, Best Celebrity Looka-Like, Best Scary Costume, Best Drag, Best Leather and Best Ensemble (Group) Costume. Prizes will be awarded to the top three costumes in each category by a panel of judges and audience choice. Admission is free, closed-in VIP parking in Hagen Park is $10. “It was one of those things that just sort of happened,” said Ellen Wedner of Wedner and Friends, producers of the Hagen Park events. “During the first hour of Stonewall, [Wedner and Friends also produced last June’s Stonewall Street Festival and Parade] I was just shocked how many people brought their dogs and I thought it was so cool.”

Wedding Bell News WILTON MANORS, FL – After 12 years of being together, Carol Moran, owner of the New Moon Bar on Wilton Drive, married her long-time partner, Nancy Goldwin in New York City on Wednesday, October 5. Goldwin worked as Director of Marketing for Alliance Entertainment Corporation, a professional photographer and now works for Harley Davidson. Moran and Goldwin met in New York City’s Central Park where they first exchanged their vows to each other. They would regularly go back to New York to celebrate their anniversary. However, this past July they decided that they would get married. “We were going there for our anniversary to celebrate and we thought how cool it would be to finally get married in the city we love and go back to all the time – and to be finally recognized [as a married couple],” said Moran. They kept their marriage plans a secret from their friends in South Florida. Moran admits that at first the couple had their doubts, knowing that quite often, couples that had been together and later got married, had a number of problems. But Moran said that they realized that they had committed themselves to one another a long time ago, and it would be nice to have their long time relationship recognized by a governmental body. Moran and Goldwin arrived on Monday and applied for their license. Since there is a 24-hour waiting period, they had their nuptials on Wednesday. “It’s crazy,” said Moran. “You can buy a gun in three hours, but when it comes to marriage, it’s ‘hey kids, don’t rush it. Why don’t you take another day to think about it.’” Their private ceremony was held in the same chapel where former baseball great, Babe Ruth, was married. Some of Goldwin’s friends in New York acted as witnesses.

She [the Justice of the Peace] then said, ‘then it’s my absolute joy to announce you legally married.’ For that moment, we were not second-class citizens.” H

human papilloma virus rose an astounding 225 percent, according to a new study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. According to the study, within the next decade the incidence of such cancers, which are almost always contracted as a result of oral sex, will surpass that of cervical cancer, and the majority of those cases are going to be in men. However, there is a vaccine that can prevent it. In the recent controversy over comments made by presidential candidate Michele Bachmann about the HPV vaccine, the focus was squarely on young women and cervical cancer. But HPV, mainly a strain called HPV-16, also causes oropharyngeal and anal cancer, a fact not often publicized because medical organizations, the government, and academics would rather not step into any debates about sex practices. Pro-DOMA Lawyer Gets $1 Million Budget Increase WASHINGTON, D.C. – Earlier this year, Speaker of the House John Boehner announced that the U.S. taxpayers will be paying attorney Paul Clement to defend the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) to the tune of $520/hour for up to $500.000. Clement was President George W. Bush’s Solicitor General. However, defending DOMA appears to be more expensive than originally anticipated because, according to Think Progress, Clement has already reached his $500,000 cap so the House G.O.P. has increased his budget by another $1-million from the American people. A representative for Clips4Sale.com told TMZ that the company made an offer to ABC for the 3-second clip for licensing the footing for a website catering to “Fart Fanatics.” It is unknown how much the clip is worth or if ABC has decided to license the footage. Vandals Target Unitarian Church CAMBRIDGE, MA – For years, rainbow flags have flown outside Unitarian Universalist churches but recently these flags have been ripped down, burned and stolen in what church leaders are calling hate crimes. Most recently in August, the First Parish Cambridge Unitarian Church found their rainbow flag stolen from its pole and bundled up on the front steps in Harvard Square. The rainbow flag has long been considered a symbol of inclusion to the homosexual community. According to the Boston Globe, the first

time the flag disappeared, it was suspected that the flag was ripped down by Hurricane Irene. However, when the church’s replacement flag disappeared three weeks later, it made the pastors of the church and its congregation suspicious of criminal activity. There has been a history of vandalism of rainbow flags at Unitarian Universalist churches. The Unitarian Universalist Association opposes discrimination against gays and said marriage equality banners and rainbow flags have become easy targets because of congregations’ visibility and support of gay, lesbian, transgendered, and bisexual issues. Bachmann Says Gays May Destroy the Military ATLANTA, GA – In a conference call with supporters of Ralph Reed’s Faith and Freedom Coalition last week, presidential candidate Michele Bachmann said she would reinstate “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, agreeing with a caller who said that allowing gays and lesbians to openly serve in the military would “destroy the armed forces.” Bachmann said that as a follower of Lord Jesus Christ since aged 16, she is also committed to the pro-life cause. Bachmann also spoke of her work opposing same-sex marriage in which an amendment that will appear on the Minnesota Constitution ballot in 2012. Bachmann also stated that of all the candidates vying for the Republican presidential nomination, she has been the most outspoken and steadfast against equality for gays. H
Herman Cain Wants to See the Science HOLLYWOOD, CA – On the ABC television show, “The View,” Republican Presidential Candidate, Herman Cain, told the hosts of the show that he believes that homosexuality is a choice and that he would like to be shown the scientific proof that homosexuality is not a choice. He told Joyce Behar, “Well, you show me the science that it’s not and I’ll be persuaded. Right now, it’s my opinion against the opinions of others who feel differently. That’s just a difference of opinions.” Cain also said that he would reinstate the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. In response to Cain’s statements on “The View,” the Log Cabin Republicans issued a statement: “If Herman Cain truly wants to see the science proving that sexual orientation is not a choice, Log Cabin Republicans would be happy to show it to him. The claim that a person chooses to be gay or lesbian has been discredited by every major professional medical organization, starting with the American Psychological Association and the American Medical Association. An individual’s orientation is no more a choice than the color of his skin or whether he is left-handed, and too many people have been hurt because of failed attempts to change the way they were born.” H
Corbin Fisher Buys “www.Gay.xxx” for $500,000 LAS VEGAS, NV – Liberty Media Holdings, also known as Corbin Fisher, a gay porn production company based in Las Vegas, has purchased the domain name, Gay.xxx for one-half million dollars making it the most expensive domain name sold in an extension that is not yet publicly open for registration. ICM Registry, which owns the “.xxx” domain extension will start selling “.xxx” in December but is accepting bids for reserving domains now. After December, the normal price for registering a “.xxx” will be $200. The previous top price for an address in pre-launch extension is believed to be the $350,000 that Overstock.com paid the Colombian “.co” registry for “o.co” in June 2010. Anderson was ordained by the John Knox Presbytery, a group of 60 congregations in Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota. Supporters said that Anderson was profoundly qualified, describing him as a compassionate and deeply spiritual man, a gifted preacher and well-versed in theology. Anderson had previously been a Presbyterian minister. Twenty-one years ago, Anderson had a choice between serving as a Presbyterian minister but hiding his gay identity or leave the ministry and live his life as an openly gay man. Lesbian Couple Kicked Out of Hotel for Kissing ST. LOUIS, MO – A lesbian couple claim they are victims of discrimination after they were kicked out of a St. Louis Four Seasons Hotel for kissing. According to KSDK-TV, the couple were enjoying the afternoon by the rooftop pool of the Four Seasons when they were harassed for openly displaying affection. They claim that when they got into the Jacuzzi, sat next to each other and kissed, a security guard allegedly told them they were not allowed to kiss on hotel property--a rule the guard said also applied to heterosexual couples. The couple said that when they confronted the hotel manager, they were told that they were acting inappropriately, and that the hotel had received complaints. Study: Employers Less Likely to Interview Openly Gay Men for Job Openings CHICAGO, IL – A new study by the University of Chicago suggests that openly gay men face substantial job discrimination in certain parts of the U.S. The study, which is the largest of its kind to look at job discrimination against gay men, found that employers in the South and Midwest were much less likely to offer an interview if an applicant's resume indicates that he is openly gay. Overall, the study found that gay applicants were 40 percent less likely to be granted an interview than their heterosexual counterparts. “The results indicate that gay men encounter significant barriers in the hiring process because, at the initial point of contact, employers more readily disqualify openly gay applicants than equally qualified heterosexual applicants,” wrote the study's author, András Tilcsik. The research has been published in the American Journal of Sociology. H

Breast Cancer Risks & Detection The Earlier the Better
RISK FACTORS Having a risk factor, or even several, does not mean that you will get the disease. Most women who have one or more breast cancer risk factors never develop the disease, while many women with breast cancer have no apparent risk factors (other than being a woman and growing older). Even when a woman with risk factors develops breast cancer, it is hard to know just how much these factors may have contributed to her cancer. Risk factors you cannot change: Simply being a woman is the main risk factor for developing breast cancer. Your risk of developing breast cancer increases as you get older. About 5% - 10% of breast cancer cases are thought to be hereditary. Women whose close blood relatives have had breast cancer have a higher risk. A woman with cancer in one breast has a 3 to 4 fold increased risk of developing a new cancer. Denser breast tissue have more glandular tissue and less fatty tissue. Women diagnosed with certain benign breast conditions may have an increased risk. Women who have had more menstrual cycles because they started menstruating at an early age and/or went through menopause at a later age have a slightly higher risk of breast canContinued from NEWS on Page 7

Armed Services Chair Would Rather Go Without Funding Than Bend on Gay Marriage WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Buck McKeon, chairman of the House’s Armed Services Committee, said on C-SPAN’s “Newsmakers” that he would rather see Congress fail to pass a defense authorization measure for the first time in 50 years, if it meant allowing military chaplains to conduct gay marriages. The Senate’s defense authorization bill, which has cleared the Armed Services panel but not the full chamber, does not include the House provision on gay marriage which does not permit military chaplains to conduct same-sex marriages. H
cer. Women, who as children or young adults, had radiation therapy to the chest area as treatment for another cancer. Women who have been exposed to Diethylstilbestrol have a slightly increased risk. Lifestyle-related factors: Women who have not had children or who had their first child after age 30. Women using oral contraceptives. Using estrogen before menopause. Consumption of alcohol is clearly linked to an increased risk as does being overweight or obese. DETECTION Mammogram: The American Cancer Society recommends women age 40 and older should have a mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. Recent evidence has confirmed that mammograms offer substantial benefit for women in their 40s. Women can feel confident about the benefits associated with regular mammograms for finding cancer early. However, mammograms also have limitations. A mammogram can miss some cancers, and it may lead to follow up of findings that are not cancer. Clinical breast exam: Women in their 20s and 30s should have a clinical breast exam (CBE) as part of a regular health exam by a health professional preferably every 3 years. Starting at age 40, women should have a CBE by a health professional every year. For this exam, you undress from the waist up. The health professional will first look at the breasts for abnormalities in size or shape, or changes in the skin of the breasts or nipple. Then, using the pads of the fingers, the examiner will gently palpate the breasts. The CBE is a good time for women who don't know how to examine their breasts
Two Leading G.O.P. Contenders for San Diego Mayor are Gay SAN DIEGO, CA – The two leading contenders for the Republican nomination for San Diego, California’s mayorial race are both gay. Neither of the two candidates, City Councilman Carl DeMaio nor District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, are known to be LGBT activists but neither have they made a secret about being gay. San Diego has elected Republican mayors since 1992 so the odds are whoever wins the Republican mayoral primary could easily make San Diego the nation’s largest city to ever choose an openly gay GOP leader. Tory Counselor Suspended over Gay Marriage Tweet LONDON, UK – The Guardian reports that a senior Tory counselor has been suspended after suggesting his party “may as well legalize marriage with animals” after David Cameron declared his sup-
to learn the right way to do it from their health care professionals and should ask their doctor or nurse to teach them and watch the technique. Breast awareness and self-exam: Beginning in their 20s, women should be told about the benefits and limitations of breast self-exam (BSE). Women should be aware of how their breasts normally look and feel and report any new breast changes to a health professional as soon as they are found. Finding a breast change does not necessarily mean there is a cancer. A woman can notice changes by knowing how her breasts normally look and feel, and feeling her breasts for changes (breast awareness), or by choosing to use a step-by-step approach and using a specific schedule to examine her breasts. Signs and symptoms of breast cancer: Although widespread use of screening mammograms has increased the number of breast cancers found before they cause any symptoms, some breast cancers are not found by mammograms, either because the test was not done or because even under ideal conditions, mammograms do not find every breast cancer. The most common sign of breast cancer is a new lump or mass. A mass that is painless, hard, and has irregular edges is more likely to be cancerous, but breast cancers can be tender, soft, or rounded. For this reason, it is important that any new mass, lump, or breast change is checked by a health care professional with experience in diagnosing breast diseases. Other possible signs of breast cancer include: Swelling of all or part of a breast (even if no distinct lump is felt), skin irritation or dimpling, breast or nipple pain, nipple retraction, redness, scaliness, or thickening of the nipple or breast skin or port for gay marriage. Party chiefs took immediate action against James Malliff, a cabinet member of the Tory-controlled Wycombe council in Buckinghamshire, who is in charge of “big society and localism.” A party spokesman said: “These comments are completely unacceptable. Counselor Malliff's local party association has suspended him with immediate effect.” The London Evening Standard reported that Malliff tweeted to Paul Goodman, a former Conservative MP, who asked whether legalizing gay marriage could lead to multiple sharia marriages being made lawful. Malliff wrote: “There is no doubt the PM is wrong on this issue. We may as well legalize marriage with animals, crude I concede but no apology.” Another tweet on his feed read: “Great keynote address by David Cameron, not sure about legalising gay marriage though, what happened to sanctity of marriage #odd.” The tweets have since been removed. In a statement to the Press Association, Malliff admitted his comments were

Most doctors feel that early detection tests for breast cancer save many thousands of lives each year, and that many more lives could be saved if even more women and their health care providers took advantage of these tests. Following the American Cancer Society's guidelines for the early detection of breast cancer improves the chances that breast cancer can be diagnosed at an early stage and treated successfully.

It was much more a comment to try to David Cameron establish where we draw the line on these things.” “My comment [on Twitter] was there is no doubt the PM has got this wrong and you may as well legalise marriage with animals. It sounds terrible now, but it was not meant to be anti-gay. I am not anti-gay and I respect people's views on this issue.” "The comments were ill-conceived and crude, but I want to know where we are going on this – it needs to be discussed." Three Apples That Changed the World In the wake of the passing of Steve Jobs, and the iPhone 4S wave storming the world of gadgets last week, an interesting tribute came across the wire. The concept suggests that there are three apples that changed the world. It is a great theory and a perfect way to honor one man’s ability to change our world. First up: Adam and Eve. (Not Adam and Steve. Sorry. I am aware it’s a hate speech, but it is still one of the most amusing tirades against the community I have ever heard.) “And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shall not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;” Genesis 3:17, King James Version. Adam’s apple was the first to change humankind with an act defining ourselves separate to God. “For dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return” follows verse 19. Depending on how far you want to take this, the message is extremely apt to the community on many levels. First, you have the idea of having your own mind and desires, and not conforming to the law of the land. Adam went against his maker and against how things were “supposed” to be. Furthermore, it is an example of giving into temptation, of succumbing to a desire that you shouldn’t. In a community driven often times by desire over consequence, it is highly relevant. Finally, many would argue the desired effect of having a protruding Adam’s apple. I won’t go into that however! The 15th century brought us the second influential apple that changed the world and mankind. Sir Isaac Newton sat under a tree and God, the universe, fate, or whatever you believe in decided an apple should fall. Fall it did upon his head immediately allowing

Sir Isaac Newton’s apple changed the world of science as well as mathematics by stating that “every object in the universe attracts every other object with a force directed along the line of centers for the two objects …” Well in terms of gravity, it affects everyone no matter your orientation. However, if you think like Newton did, you will see that not only did he concieve the law of gravity but also he encouraged humankind to imagine, to dream and to accept there was much of the word that we don’t understand. Because he has Apple products, he believed there was no other way I could know. I responded by saying, “Yes, it was sad to lose an innovator.” He replied, “Well probably not for you as you aren’t an Apple lover.” My response was quick and true. “I may not love the products, but I still have an iPod.” It was at this point I realized that though I didn’t subscribe to the whole Apple world, I couldn’t escape it. I have had an iPod for years and I need it. I hardly listen to CD’s and, since I travel so much, I have all the music I want in a tiny little box. worse, to simply disengage. Stack’s piece paints the broader picture that it is not just about our disappointment but about what will happen if he loses this election to Romney or Perry. To let the Republicans back in would be disastrous on so many levels. Future SCOTUS appointments are only the beginning of how the right-wing power shift would manifest itself in a democracy. My greatest fear is that the Democrats, Independents, moderate Republicans and all those who got behind Obama in 2008 will not be energized enough to make the same thrust for 2012 where it will be needed even
more. Regardless of their rationale, they ask themselves “Why should I, Obama has not delivered or fought as hard as I had hoped?” What they don’t realize is that it’s not as much about Obama as it is about YOU and ME and the future of this country. It hasn’t hit home yet that the consequences of Obama losing are dire. We must get folks energized again and I don’t see it happening yet. SINCERELY, PAUL M SMITH

Who Knew? OCD – Scared Sexless By SAM KNEW, MSW
If you’ve glanced at your television set recently, you’ve probably noticed the networks’ obsession with other people’s obsessions. From over-eaters to hoarding to counting steps – we have witnessed people obsessed with it all – including sex. Don’t worry, this isn’t going to be one of those Tiger Woods pieces. This is a different type of sexual obsession - the fear of contracting STDs (sexually transmitted diseases). It’s probably fair to say that most of us spend the better part of lives avoiding diseases in general, but these individuals live in a perpetual state of fear, isolation and usually in silence of their obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD). In some cases, these individuals have
worried themselves sick about getting sick. This obsession of contracting an STD, such as HIV, can be classified under the “chicken or egg” syndrome. In a society of bill boards, TV campaigns and marches across most any major street pleading us to get tested and be protected - it’s no wonder so many suffer from this form of OCD, scaring ourselves sexless. On the surface this may seem like a good thing. People holding out on sexual encounters, afraid of contracting an STD. But some mental health professionals point out this paralyzing and compulsive behavior can lead to more serious problems. Individuals suffering from the “fear of contamination” have an irrational fear of being contaminated by germs, dirt, pathogens, or anything unsanitary. This fear often causes the people to take on compulsive behaviors. Behaviors such as hand washing, taking multiple showers a day, washing and rewashing clothing and other repetitive ritual actions. The emotional and physical toll of this type of paranoia can set off a chain reaction of issues. These can include stress related illnesses, such as loss of appetite, ulcers, depression and sleep depravation. In addition, this fear makes it extremely
challenging to pursue mature, healthy relationships – even with one’s own family and friends, much less romantically. The obsession can even take on a life of it’s own, for example some individuals compelled to be tested compulsively for STDs, even daily, disbelieving negative results. Oddly enough, individuals who are HIV+ (or have another type of weakened immune system disorder) may develop a similar form of OCD. These individuals may develop social phobias (a fear of being criticized by others). Their fears may also lead to anxiety disorders, with symptoms including: discomfort or pain in the chest, dizziness, nausea, cold or hot flashes, difficulty breathing and physical tremors. These phobias can lead to individuals becoming so paralyzed and ashamed of their condition they may avoid seeking treatment, and develop dangerous coping skills. For example, a study identified HIV+ gay and bi-sexual men, who also suffer from forms of OCD, at an increased risk of developing a substance use disorder (SUD), specifically with methamphetamine (meth). Meth is also known to develop impotence in users.
Treatment of these disorders can come in many forms, depending on the multiple sub-disorders one develops. In some cases, several forms of behavioral therapy, including exposure therapy – where clients are asked to confront their fears are used. In extreme cases, psychosurgery may be considered. Less invasive treatments include the use of medication (usually in conjunction with therapy). Sufferers could also benefit from support groups and relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation – and maybe a little less TV. H

Cross-Eyed
“Unexpected” By AJ CROSS Today I was wondering what a day would be like if there was something that happened that was unexpected; something that moved me in such a way as to almost bring a tear to my eye. Every day I wake up hoping that some random act of kindness will occur in my presence or that I will be witness to a change in someone that is a change for the better. That continues to be something I look for. Why are so many people content on waking up and pretending to be someone they are not or worse acting a certain way simply to “fit in” or be accepted when that way is truly against everything they really are? Why are so many people motivated by things that really do not matter or impressed by things that are insignificant? I have watched people spend every dollar they have to be able to say they drive a certain car or wear a certain designer piece of clothing. I have seen people abandon friendships for success, or rather what they perceive to be success. I have seen people walk away from someone they love because to stay with that person was inconvenient to the plans they set forth for their lives. There are so few things that surprise me anymore and it saddens me. I remember once a very long time ago sitting in a diner with a group of people I barely knew that, for the sake of satisfying my own insecurities, I called friends. As we all ordered our food and began to engage in conversation a homeless man walked into the diner. He admittedly was not clean and though we were not close enough to smell him, those that were made it very clear that his odor was unpleasant. He walked to the counter and asked someone who appeared to be the owner if he could “buy” a cup of coffee. Many people in the group I was sitting found this to be an opportune moment to make themselves feel powerful by making fun of someone weak. They began to make horrible comments and it almost reached the point of berating him. I was weaker then and just happy to be in the company of people that I thought were the upper echelon of my social pool. I sat and though I felt badly, I did not act. Though I did not join in and make fun of the homeless man, my silence was equally offensive and wrong. Then at the heat of it all, the most unexpected thing happened. The one person whom was certainly the center of the group and most popular and definitely most attractive among us, slammed his fist on the table so hard that several of the drinks fell over. He turned back to the homeless man at the counter who was being refused service by the owner and stood up. He walked over and stood right next to the homeless man, looked directly at the owner and said “I have nine people with me and we just ordered a lot of food. If he doesn’t get his coffee, then we are walk-
ing out. Do you really want to lose a $70 check over a ninety-cent cup of coffee?” The owner actually poured the coffee himself and gave it to the older homeless man. The look on the man’s face pushed me to tear up. He was so moved by this random act of kindness and so was I. I don’t know what came over my friend that night, but shortly after things changed and slowly the group I had gone out with for so long began to dissipate and only three of us remained true friends. I try to have moments like that because they make me feel good. They make me feel human. Do not stand by and exist off the pain and fear of others. Do not allow others to do that either. Being typical is so easy and so cowardly. There is great strength is doing the right thing when it seems no one else will and greater strength in being the person that no one expects; in doing the unexpected. Who knows? One day you might be in a moment and exhibit some rare quality that moves a friend or even a stranger to tear up because when they least expected it, you were selfless, humble, kind, generous or simply human. Go and do or say something that is wonderfully unexpected, if even only to yourself. H

A Return to Brokeback Mountain By NICHOLAS SNOW winner Larry McMurtry (Terms of Endearment, The Last Picture Show) – an executive producer on the film – met the story’s author, Annie Proulx, but they did. Proulx trusted the duo and the rest his history. Many on Hollywood’s hot lists wanted to participate in the film. “When we put it out into the world, five days later Gus Van Sant showed up at our door,” explained Ossana. About the continuing development process and the ultimate choice of Ang Lee to direct, Ossana explained that both Brokeback Mountain and Lee’s Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon have in common two very key elements – they are very intimate stories that take place on vast landscapes. Was Brokeback Mountain an easy sell for the screenwriters? No. “A lot of people expressed trepidation about it,” explained Ossana. “When I first mentioned it to our representatives in 1997, they asked me what it was about and I told them and they said, ‘Are you out of your mind?’ And I said, ‘No. Read the story, and then you’ll see I’m not out of my mind.’ As soon as they read the story, they said, ‘Great. We should do this.’” Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annie Proulx, who wrote the short story the film was based on, explained, “…I have had hundreds of letters over the eight years since the story was written from men who said, ‘This is my story. You’ve told my life.’ From other men who have said, ‘This is why I left Wyoming.’ And most particularly moving from fathers who’ve said, ‘Now I know the hell my son went through.’” “It’s a great piece of American literature,” said Ang Lee about Annie Proulx’s original short story, Brokeback Mountain. “It’s only 30 pages long but it wrenched my guts. It’s very far away from me but it really touched me. I just love the story and I have to do it. I can’t put that out of my mind.” Lee was very happy with his leading men, Jake and Heath. “Oh, they’re won-
derful,” said Lee. “It’s scary to think how young and good they are. They’re totally pro.” Did the hunky stars have reservations about doing the love scenes? “No. They’re like, ‘tell me what to do to get into the movie,’” explained Lee. “They’re good actors. They want to do good roles.” In a red carpet interview there are often several reporters speaking with a single star at one time. My interview with Jake Gyllenhaal was en masse, and one reporter asked the star what message he wanted audiences to take away from Brokeback Mountain. “If that were my job, then I would be the director of the movie,” said Gyllenhaal. “I just showed up to work every day. What do I want people to take away from it? I hope that they walk in with an idea, and they leave with a different one.” They will and I did. I walked in believing Gyllenhaal was a pretty boy creation of the Hollywood star machine. I walked out embracing him as a great actor and a brave soul, although he initially turned the movie down – not because of homophobia, but because of the two-dimensional sound of a movie that is said to be about “two gay cowboys.” “…They said, ‘uh, we have this gay cowboy script.’ And I said, ‘absolutely not. I don’t want to have anything to do with it.’ And when I learned Ang Lee was going to direct it … and the kind of passion he approaches all of his projects with, I immediately wanted to do it. And I knew that it would be about so much more than the simplification that people can kind of throw out there and laugh at…”
“You know, that’s only a suit that I think both Heath and I have been told we’ve donned later…” said Gyllenhaal when I asked him how he felt about the fact that his character in Brokeback Mountain would be a significant role model for gay youth. “It’s flattering you know. I think that it’s important that whatever somebody is, however they are, that they be accepted.” One reporter said to Jake, “In a recent interview you said it was a compliment to be called bisexual, so you’re fine with playing gay and playing bi and all that?” “What I think I meant to say with that,” explained Jake, “I think that this movie in particular is about kind of trying to shatter the sense of duality or this idea of, you know, an idea of good and bad or black and white. It works within a gray area and I think that you know, sexually, I think people consider bisexuality that kind of gray area and so, I just would like – yea, whatever. It’s a very interesting place. I’m flattered to be called anything, even if it’s somebody coming up to the street and being like, ‘fuck you,’ you know, because if it bothers people or if people like it, that’s what I’m in the business of doing.” Okay, now would someone please translate Jake’s answer for me? I don’t believe any of us covering the red carpet arrivals for the Brokeback Mountain premiere in Hollywood, November 11, 2005, had a clue that we would truly be a part of history, helping launch a movie that would transform the lives of countless people around the world because of its profound capturing of the cost of the closet. I had not yet seen the movie that I now hold as one of the most important ever made, conveying the deep, undeniable humanity of authentic love, as well as the justifications and costs of locking that love in the dark. For the record, the late Heath Ledger was not at the premiere. He was in New York with Michelle Williams who was in the last stages of her pregnancy. I don’t recall that Anne Hathaway was in attendance either. You might find it interesting to note that the film achieved the sort of Triple Crown rarely seen in Hollywood – the author of the original story, the screenwriters and the director all agreed that what ended up on the screen is precisely what they had envisioned. I’m not sure how Brokeback Mountain screenwriters Diana Ossana (Johnson County War, Dead Man’s Walk) – a producer on the film – and Pulitzer Prize

Top LGBT Organizations Honored Dolphin Democrats Honor the Best of the Community Part 3 of 4, by BOB KECSKEMETY The Dolphin Democrats will be holding its annual Dolphin Democrat’s Award Reception on Sunday, October 23 at the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum, 300 Gulf Stream Way in Dania Beach near Griffin Road and I-95. The evening will include a VIP Reception and/or cocktail reception in the main lobby from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., dining and awards presentation from 7:15 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. There will also be a silent auction starting at 6 p.m. and ending at 7:45 p.m. The Dolphin Democratic Club is Florida’s oldest and largest LGBT political organization. The annual Dolphin Democrats’ Awards Reception is the premier event that recognizes outstanding leaders who have demonstrated their strength to lead and a vision to improve the lives of the LGBT community and all deserving citizens. Honoring these special members of the community celebrates the accomplishments and strengths and hope for the future. This week we will look at some of the organizations and businesses that will be honored at the awards presentation. According to Ron Mills, president of the Dolphin Democratic Club, the Broward Leadership Award will be presented to Women in Network (WIN). WIN is a social and business networking association for women based in South Florida and is perhaps the oldest lesbian organization in the
State of Florida. The focus has been half on education and half on networking and connecting the lesbian community. WIN is entering its 25th year. “We were very honored to find out that the Dolphins have chosen us for this award,” said Denise Spivak, President of WIN. “They [the Dolphins] are an organization of an equally impressive tenure and we know that they do not choose their award recipients lightly. We are very honored and we also are honored by the company of which we are now becoming a part of – including the other recipients of this particular award and also the other award recipients that were chosen this year. We look forward to continuing the work we’ve been doing.” This year’s Dolphin Democrats Awards Reception media award goes to Hotspots! Magazine. According to Michael Albetta, former president of the Dolphin Democrats, the media award goes to the individual or business that has gone out of their way to promote the Dolphins and their programs. Albetta said that Hotspots! Magazine has “never said no to the Dolphins’ ‘Get Out the Vote’ effort in regards to notifying the public and didn’t want anything in return. Time and time again over the past two years, whether it’s a local race or a national race, they’ve always allowed us to use their magazine to inform the public of the events that

She also taught law at New York University Law School and at Barnard College. Her partner was Marianne Haggerty, of Manhattan and Yonkers. Her children – Adam Ettelbrick, 14, and Julia Ettelbrick, 12 – now live with Ms. Goldberg and her partner, Mary Lou Kelley. The four women, and the children, had spent time together in the New York and vacationed together in Provincetown, Mass. She is survived by her children and her brother, Robert Ettelbrick Jr., of Morgan Hill, Calif., and her sister, Linda Anderes, of Tucson. When New York State Legislature voted in June to legalize same-sex marriage, Ettelbrick was pleased, although Ms. Goldberg said Ms. Ettelbrick remained concerned that “those celebrations not preclude recognition of families that fall outside marriage’s scope.” After her passing, The National Gay and Lesbian Task force said she was, “An organizer par excellence” and that she had “brought many gifts and skills to our movement.” They also posted a tribute to the activist including statements from former co workers. Rea Care, Executive Director, of the Task force said, “I will truly miss Paula – her sass, her smarts and her smile. She was
the dominant culture and the choices we make regarding our relationships.” “I do not want to be known as ‘Mrs. Attached-to-Somebody-Else,’” she wrote. "Nor do I want to give the state the power to regulate my primary relationship.” Paula Louise Ettelbrick was born on Oct. 2, 1955, on an Army base in Stuttgart, Germany, to Robert and Judi Ettelbrick. She graduated from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb in 1978 and received her law degree in 1984 from Wayne State University in Detroit, where she clerked in the law office of the United Auto Workers. Ms. Ettelbrick spent two years at a large Detroit law firm, before she went to New York to join the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund. She remained its legal director from 1988 to 1993. During her time at Lambda in 1991, New York’s Court of Appeals decided 6 to 1 that a lesbian, known in the case as Alison D., had no legal right to visit the child she had been raising with her former partner, Virginia M., the biological parent. This was a massive loss for Ettlebrick. However, during her long and poignant career, she also experienced important victories. During her five years as legislative counsel to the Empire State Pride Agenda in New York, from 1994 to 1999, she was among those pushing Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani to grant domestic partners rights and benefits equal to those of spouses. The Domestic Partnership Bill was introduced in 1998, at the time she told The New York Times: “If you’re married, you
were happening.” “I’ve always had such respect for the Democratic Party and what they’ve done,” said Peter Clark, publisher of Hotspots! Magazine. “They really understand our community and understand our priorities and the fact that there is so much work to be done. I think they’ve done a good job in prioritizing what they need to do; getting Congress to move forward on issues that impact our community. Since Barack Obama’s inauguration, we’ve made incredible strides forward but there’s still a lot to be done. I’m thrilled that ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ was repealed. Now I’m anxious to see them shift their focus to DOMA and recognition of the validity of same-sex couples. When I got the phone call that I was going to be recognized by the Dolphins for what we do is simply a matter of supporting their initiative and giving our voice to the community to them so they could be heard on a wider scale.” This year, the Dolphins will be awarding a second Political Alliance Award This second award is being given to U.S. Representative Ted Deutch. Deutch served in the Florida Senate from 2007 until April 13, 2010 when he won a special election to the U.S. House of Representative replacing Congressman Robert Wexler. Wexler had left Congress to lead the Center for Middle East Peace and
Economic Cooperation. Albetta said that within days of taking his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, Deutch signed on as a sponsor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). The final award for the evening is the Community Service Award which is being presented to Broward House. For many years, Broward House has been in the forefront of helping people with HIV/AIDS and recently announced that they were going to start an LGBT teenage suicide prevention program including a telephone hotline. Tickets for the Dolphin Democrats’ Awards Reception can be purchased online at their website, www.DolphinDems.org. Individual tickets are $75, which includes the reception, dinner, awards presentation and silent. VIP tickets of $150 per person also include the VIP reception. For additional information, either visit their website or call 866-478-8262. Sponsorship opportunities are also still available. In next week’s Florida Agenda, we will have the latest information on the 2012 Dolphin Democrats’ ‘Equality for All’ Awards Reception and Silent Auction. H

supportive of me and of other women in leadership positions. In fact, upon becoming the executive director of the Task Force, I received a note card from her along with a contribution to the Task Force in honor of women’s leadership, telling me the story of how when she had become an executive director, another woman executive director had done the same for her. I have continued this tradition by sending a note to some new women executive directors, telling Paula's story and writing a check to their organization. I know the tradition and her story will continue on.” Sue Hyde, the director of the Task Force’s National Conference on LGBT Equality: Creating Change said, “Paula Ettelbrick brought many gifts and skills to our movement as a litigator and legal scholar, as an organizational leader, and as a U.S.-based
activist with a deep grasp of conditions on the ground for LGBT people in countries outside our own. But Paula’s story is incomplete without calling forward her inspiring and visionary work as a community organizer par excellence. She led the first campaign to increase our visibility in the U.S. census, when to do so was regarded as quixotic. She was in the forefront of the movement to grow and strengthen state-level LGBT organizing when statewide organizations were embryonic. Paula brought to life more than 350 actions in states across the country, because she believed that our equality must be secured in our state capitols. With fierce determination, grace and bold curiosity, she allowed us to feel and flex our grassroots strength and power. She had faith in us and we in her.” H

Word Play The Pharmaceutical Shuffle “Side Effects May Include Death” By CHrIStIAN ALExANdEr If you are watching television for any length of time, eventually you will come across the obligatory drug commercial. These advertisements seem to offer a needed answer to any medical or mental problem you can think of. Depressed? Take this new pill! High blood sugar … we’ve got you covered … hell, we’ll even deliver it to your door if you have the right insurance. Child a little too hyper active in class? He’s not just rambunctious, he’s probably got ADD, and guess what? There’s a pill for that too. There’s even some new “Miracle” one-a-day HIV meds for those who suffer with that affliction. I won’t get into further detail just yet, because it angers me and I just may break something. I have always been, and try to remain, a person who believes ignorance is bliss. I realize that sounds naive in this world in which we now live, but it seems the less I know about what goes on in the world around me, the happier I am. Maintaining this philosophy was very easy for me for well over a decade because I was so stoned and/or high throughout the day, I had no clue what was going on around me. Now, that I’ve managed to stay sober, it’s getting harder and harder to watch the news or venture outside and see what is really going on in the world. Then, on a day like any other, I was flipping channels trying to find something worth watching on television, when I accidentally paused on a commercial. Here was this woman on the screen. The poor woman was depressed. It seemed no matter what she did or where she went, her depression just encompassed her. I felt sorry for this woman until I saw that all she had to do to rid herself of this depression was take a pill. After a certain time period, the woman on TV would be happy again, and by the end of the commercial, she was. This got me thinking, could the woman in the commercial hear what the announcer was saying about this incredible new happy pill? He spoke for roughly 10 to 15 seconds saying how wonderful it was and then in a slightly quieter voice, began to list some of the possible side effects, not the least of which was DEPRESSION and suicidal thoughts. How is it that a drug, marketed solely as an ANTI-depressant could cause depression, let alone suicidal thoughts? As I currently take two anti-depressants myself, I decided to do a little research on the topic. The two pills I currently take had similar side effects. This, excuse my language, really pissed me off. I’ve never had a complete trust in doctors, but this was beyond all limits. Granted, they say these side-effects only occur in a small number of patients, but how do they reach this conclusion. I wonder if they base it on the
belief that hundreds of thousands of people are taking these pills, but only a few of them died or got sick. I researched this extensively and, surprise, could find nothing resembling an answer. As for the drug in the commercial I saw, when I looked up the rest of the side effects, I was dumbfounded. Here are just a few of the “possible” side effects of this “wonderful” anti-depressant: Dizziness, Lightheadedness, Nausea, Vomiting, Loss of Energy, Blurred Vision, Weight Gain, Drowsiness, Constipation, Irregular/Fast Heartbeat, Fainting, Mental or Mood Changes, Increased Anxiety, Restlessness, Tremors, and of course Depression and Suicidal Thoughts. There are actually quite a few more, but I only have so much space. After finding this out, I looked through my own medications just to see if there was anything that I should know. Suffice it to say, I am now a raging hypochondriac. Some things should indeed be left to my “ignorance is bliss” philosophy I have been taking some of these drugs for years. My doctors gave them to me, my pharmacist filled them; they must be safe. Admittedly, so far, nothing horrible has happened since I’ve been on these, except my addiction (which has been cleared by my therapist, psychiatrist and primary Doctor as long as I stay on the recommended doses) to a certain tranquilizer (which I took after reading all the possible things that my other medications could do to me). The addiction itself was a very large problem until I received help, I didn’t know it was addictive when I started it, and didn’t realize it until it was too late. But, this isn’t my story. It’s a story of deception and greed which I shall continue next week. Till then, Read your labels! H

“I Love the Pride Center, Because …”
New Campaign to Build Awareness of the Center
The Pride Center launches a new media campaign designed to raise awareness of The Center and the vital services, programs and activities it provides to the community. Titled “I Love the Pride Center, because …”, the campaign utilizes portraits of community members holding signs that explain exactly what about The Pride Center they value the most. During initial portrait sessions, renowned photographer Dennis Dean
captured powerful photographs of community leaders, elected officials, entertainers, business owners, community activists and Center volunteers. Subjects in the photos display signs that convey specific reasons why they value the work of The Pride Center. Examples of the portraits accompany this article. “The campaign has two phases. The initial phase utilizes local print media, targeting the
local LGBT community. Portrait posters will be displayed in the community, as well. The second phase capitalizes on expanded reach provided through social media. At community venues and events, individuals will be invited to have their photo taken for use on their profile pages of Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites, to be accompanied by their reasons for loving The Pride Center. In this way, we aim to build
increased awareness in a manner that is highly visible and cost effective” states Paul Hyman, Executive Director. Messages conveyed in the ad campaign are funny, touching, genuine and personal. Importantly, they express practical benefits provided at the Center, reflecting unique perspectives and shared values that unite us as a community. Photo credit: Dennis Dean

150 Students Get a Fresh Start The Pride Center Donates Student Backpacks to Elementary School The Pride Center’s newly-formed young professional group, The Varsity Club, in partnership with Women in Network and the Gay and Lesbian Business Exchange came together for Judy Shepherd’s 6th annual Backpack Drive benefitting Thurgood Marshall Elementary School. A total of 153 backpacks, 325 notebooks, 400 composition books, 3,500 sheets of paper, 316 highlighter pens, 1,450 pencils and 24 boxes of crayons were donated. The annual backpack drive has demon-
strated to the school that it can depend on the generosity of the LGBT community to provide backpacks and school supplies for those students who otherwise wouldn’t have the necessary materials to help ensure a successful school year. Thurgood Marshall Elementary School principal, Ms. Vega, has stated that over the last few years the school has risen to become a B+ -rated school which would not have been possible without the assistance of the LGBT community and the Pride Center.
On October 22, The Pride Center will host the second annual LGBT Senior Health Expo. In conjunction with the Florida Assisted Living Coalition, SAGE and the Annie Appleseed Foundation, the Center will provide an exciting day of activities in the Main Hall of Building A. Better health is closer than you think – the LGBT Senior Health Expo will offer seniors a comprehensive overview of healthcare services available to the senior LGBT community. The Expo will consist of a trade show-format with various LGBT-friendly medical, professional and financial service providers eager to assist. More than 45 vendors will be on-hand to address questions and provide information needed to make appropriate health-related decisions. Medical staff will be on hand to provide featured health screenings, administer flu shots and more. Don’t miss out on the raffles and entertainment!
A healthy and tasty organic lunch will be served on a first-come, first-served basis which is sponsored by the Annie Apple Seed Foundation. “Lunch & Learn” lectures will include important topics such as Medicare, HMOs, Sex and Seniors and more. Presented by 5 Star Senior Living and Willow Wood, the LGBT Senior Health Expo is free and open to seniors. Please RSVP by calling the Florida Assisted Living Coalition at (800) 939-2650 and provide them with your name and contact telephone number.

Punch Out Breast Cancer
Pride Center Presents Breast Fest 2011 The Pride Center will host Breast Fest 2011 on Saturday, October 15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Equality Park, 2040 N. Dixie Highway in Wilton Manors. This day of celebration and education about breast health boasts a diverse array of fun, informative activities for a wide community — women, men, trans, seniors and young people. Highlights include the Brass Knuckle Bombshell Burlesque Troupe, a Tripe Touch Instructor, free bra fittings, breast cancer survivor testimonials, health seminars for women and men, interesting speakers, informational booths from various community organizations, live entertainment, food and “goodie” bags. Pride Center staff, volunteers and interns have organized a wide coalition of community partners for the event, including Gilda’s Club, Women In Network, the American Cancer Society, Broward Health, the John W. Nick Foundation, Care Resource, Mary Kay and Omni Home Health Care. Educating the LGBTQ community on breast cancer risks and linking them to care remain vital priorities for the Pride Center. The Centers for Disease Control has
found that lesbian and bisexual women are at greater risk for both developing breast cancer and for being diagnosed at a later stage of the disease for a variety of reasons. Lesbians are less likely to get preventive services for cancer, including annual screenings. Discrimination and poor cultural competence by some health care providers can prevent LGBTQ persons from seeking care. Transgender persons are less likely to be insured than heterosexual or LGB individuals. Senior LGBT individuals can face additional barriers to health because of isolation and a lack of social services and culturally competent providers. “We’re committed to improving the health and wellness of our community,” says Kristofer Fegenbush, Deputy Director. “Breast Fest is one step in a long road we’re pursuing to bring awareness, education, outreach and service linkage around breast health. It should be a fun day.” Join The Pride Center in the quest to enrich, encourage and educate the community about breast health and needs through this fun, informative event.
Last week I had the opportunity, along with our colleagues from SunServe and Equality Florida, to participate in The Broward County School Board Workshop. School Board members assembled to review various plans for the coming year, including the structure and priorities of its Diversity Committee. Community input was sought from a variety of constituents. Rewarding and notable was the inclusion of sexual orientation and gender identity as a priority and concern of a diverse array of committee and community members, on behalf of Broward County’s public school students. While important decisions lie ahead regarding how to advocate for all young people regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, I was honored to be present for such a vital discussion. Providing a solid foundation for LGBT youth is vital to their future and that of our community. The focus of my social work training was on services to the elderly. Throughout my life, among personal experiences with grandparents and close friends as well as professional work with older people, I find it fascinating and worthwhile to look back through the eyes of the elderly. At the Center, periodic visits to our Senior Advisory Council’s weekly Tuesday morning Coffee and Conversation group provides me with a satisfying opportunity to connect with a sizable group of LGBT individuals whose life stories and coming out experiences provide the foundation on which our current LGBT community center movement rests. Providing stable resources for our valued LGBT seniors is vital to their future and that of our community. The best way to support the Center’s ability to serve old and young people, and everyone in between, is to contribute and participate. Volunteer and financial resources are well utilized at the Center. They enable us to provide events like this month’s Senior Health Expo and Halloween Youth Bash. Volunteers and donors are the lifeblood of the Center and are vital to the healthy future of our community!
Meet: Samantha McCoy The Pride Center’s New Customer Service Coordinator Samantha McCoy is already making her mark on the Pride Center as its new Customer Service Coordinator. “She’s made such a vital impact in a short time,” says Kristofer Fegenbush, Deputy Director. “Volunteers, staff, visitors and vendors tell me everyday how her warmth, attention to detail, sincerity, humor and standards of excellence have improved the work of the Center. I’m amazed by her combination of skill, poise, energy and experience. We’re lucky to have her.” As Customer Service Coordinator, Samantha ensures high-quality service to the Center’s visitors, volunteers and groups. Her duties include coordinating the following service areas: information and referral services at the Center’s
reception and call center, volunteer activities, groups that meet at the Center, Main Hall and room rental, the monthly Flea Market, membership recruitment and community events. Samantha was born and raised in South Florida and has one son, Omari. Her experience includes working at American Express’ Travel Related Services in Customer Service Management. She also was very involved in community service, volunteering for the Ronald McDonald House in Miami, Gilda’s Club in Ft. Lauderdale, the AIDS Walk, Women in Distress and the Pride Center. She is currently the chapter president of the Beta Phi Omega Sorority, a national multi-cultural lesbian, bi, straight organization.
In her spare time (and it’s hard to believe she has any spare time) she enjoys taking impromptu weekend trips, cheering her brother on (a professional MMA fighter), hanging out with her roller derby friends, performing Italian opera, crafting, practicing yoga or just sitting in quiet meditation. “It is my honor to work with everyone at the Pride Center,” says Samantha. “I enjoy meeting and working with so many in the community. I’m so excited I could just burst into glitter!”

Women of Color Health Expo
Over 100 women attended the 1st annual Women of Color Health Expo held at The Pride Center at Equality Park on September 24. The Women of Color Health Expo was sponsored by Arrow, Rainbow Ladies and Beta Phi Omega Sorority/Beta Iota Chapter. The purpose of this event was to offer education and health screenings for women of color who are an underserved and at risk population. Two women were found with lumps in their breasts. At least one other was found to be at risk for ovarian cancer. While all of those women need further tests, the expo revealed the lack of access to affordable health care.
Sunday Founders Brunch
In what is becoming an annual event, in July the Founders gathered at the Center for 2nd annual Sunday Brunch. The Center was lucky to have our original founder, Alan Schubert at the event. It’s amazing how much the Center has grown since it all started in his living room in 1993. Thank you, Alan! Photo credit: Steven Shires
A Night for Men: Regaining our Power and Control Moderated community chat about sexual violence hosted by The Pride Center in collaboration with the Broward LGBT Domestic Violence Coalition. This event addressed the safety, effects, and needs surrounding sexual violence to gay/bisexual men. The event was a great success bringing more than 100 participants from the community. Being the first event of its kind, A Night for Men opened the doors for an ongoing community awareness on a very stigmatize topic.

Youth Gay Meth Free The Pride Center Expands Efforts to Battle Crystal Meth Addiction The Pride Center at Equality Park, in association with Lambda Men’s Brotherhood, created a social networking program this year called Youth Gay Meth Free (YGMF). YGMF caters to the young GBTQ men in South Florida who struggle with crystal methamphetamine addiction – commonly known as “Crystal,” “Tina” or “Ice” – along with other substances. YGMF provides outreach across a variety of social media platforms—including websites, Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr with the goal of grabbing the attention of young GBTQ males struggling with addiction and compulsive meth use. After creating and utilizing the social marketing campaign, the program staff has reached over 700 youth directly through the social network sites, providing information and education. Among those 700 people, the program’s staff recruited 82 people in the target population for further service. “I’m very excited about this new program because there are so many young men struggling with additions,” said Mitchell Jerus, Youth Coordinator with the YGMF Program. “We already have so much of our online social networking programs in place. And we provide a peer counseling program both online and offline.” “These young men often feel alone with no one to talk to about their problems,” continued Jerus. “That’s why we’re here, so they know they’re not alone and that someone is there to help. We anticipate this program will be very successful and we’re using the slogan ‘Get Your Shine Back’ showing these young men that they can emerge from their dark places.” Numerous indicators confirm problematic crystal methamphetamine use among some sexually active men who have sex with other men. GBTQ/MSM young people’s questions regarding sexual identity and sexual behavior need to be addressed. These young men need skills to address and resist
using substances as they become exposed to new behavioral options in the gay community. “In my experience catering to LGBTQ youth and their families, many of the young men I’ve met that use crystal meth are young sex workers: dancers, gogo boys, adult film performers, escorts, etcetera,” said Listron “Blue” Mannix, Expanding Testing Initiative Manger overseeing the YGMF program. Linking some members of the target community to appropriate services sometimes can be a challenge. Some individuals of the target community are not open to stating their addiction, recognizing compulsive behaviors or seeking needed help or appropriate support. “We’re reaching out to other organizations that can help this program flourish and become the hope for a better future to others that it’s supposed to be,” concluded Jerus. “We feel that collaborating with programs such as Meth and Men, the Sunserve Youth Group, MProject and other treatment centers, that young men struggling can get the help that they need and deserve.” Marketing materials have been created and have been disturbed to the affiliate programs and utilized for outreach and recruitment. The core of this program is located at the Pride Center at Equality Park on Dixie Highway in Wilton Manors, Florida or by going online to Facebook and looking for “YouthGay MethFree”. For additional information, email youthmethfree@pridecenterflorida.org or call (954) 463-9005.
Varsity Club at The Pride Center Young Professionals Leading Into Tomorrow By Sebastian A. Fortino “The Pride Center's Varsity Club was created to help foster South Florida's up and coming community leaders, activists, and philanthropists.” – The Varsity Club’s mission statement. Good leadership inspires activism. However, in the LGBT-community older activists seem to lead the way, perhaps because they experienced a more intense anti-gay bias. Many veteran leaders feel young people are apathetic and often lack motivation to lead. The Varsity Club was approved by the Pride Center’s Board of Directors this summer with the goal of engaging the younger demographic. “Younger people are often ignored because of financial issues, meaning they don’t have enough extra funds to donate to organizations supportive of LGBTissues,” said Jason Burns, a co-chair of Varsity Club’s Steering Committee and Major Gifts Officer at The Pride Center at Equality Park. “We got together and asked ‘what do you want this to be’,” said Chris Caputo, a co-founder with Burns of the group and a Board Member of the Pride Center. “We want this to be a voice for our generation. Gay marriage, for instance, seems to be led by people in the 50-plus-age bracket. Really younger people should be involved, as well.” Their initial launch was held at the Wine Warehouse in July and attracted more than 40 attendees. Currently Burns, Caputo, Jason King, a patient advocate with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Kris Kenny, a recent University of Miami graduate, Enbar Cohen, Assistant
Director at Safe Schools South Florida, David Katimi, Senior Product Planner with Motorola Solutions, and myself, a journalist with previous experience working with a Philadelphia-based HIV nonprofit, serve as the steering committee for The Varsity Club. Recently, The Varsity Club partnered with Women in Network to gather backpacks and school supplies for needy students at Thurgood Marshall Elementary. Teachers and students were presented with over 190 backpacks, filled with all the necessary accoutrement for a successful school year. Moving forward, members from the Varsity Club plan to collect non-perishable food items to stock The Poverello Food Pantry for Thanksgiving. On Tuesday, October 25, the Varsity Club invites the community to Chima, located at 2400 E. Las Olas from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m for the food drive kick-off. Those who decide to attend are asked to make a donation of $10, or the equivalent in food items. Your donation grants you a complementary cocktail and appetizers. If you’re a young professional interested in volunteering and community service, or have any potential projects in need of volunteers, a good time to introduce yourself would be at their monthly happy hours at The Manor Entertainment Complex on Wilton Drive. The happy hour takes place on the “Final Friday” of every month starting at 5:30 p.m. Search “The Pride Center’s Varsity Club” on Facebook or contact Jason Burns at jburns@PrideCenterFlorida.org to learn more information.

Latin Pride Gallery Focuses on HIV/STD Prevention The Health and Community Services Program of The Pride Center is using different strategies to inform and engage the community members in adopting appropriate HIV/STD prevention behavior. One of those many strategies is the promotion of artists who are using their art work as an HIV/AIDS prevention tool. That is why “Ribbon HIV: Emilio Aponte’s Manipulated Photo Collection”© was featured at the LatinPride Gallery located inside The Pride Center. Emilio Aponte is the RESPECT Coordinator at the Pride Center. RESPECT is an effective, individual client-focused HIV prevention counseling intervention founded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Healthy Happy Hour”
In August, the PALS Project’s LIFE Goes On initiative partnered with Camp4Health to offer a “Health Happy Hour” experiential workshop. 74 participants heard summaries of different holistic therapies and were able to experience sample sessions. Sessions included yoga, acupuncture, Reike, deep muscle massage and meditation. The workshop was very successful and most participants left ‘high’ from their experiences with new doors opened for improved health.

By IAN SANDBERG Addicted, the sportswear line from Barcelona, is unleashing its unique mesh wear that perfectly stretches to fit the contours of men’s curves. Made from 100% polyester, the new collection features long pants, tanks, shorts and briefs. All come in an assortment of vibrant and attractive color combinations and are available now at lajock.com. Addicted is the lower price-point brand to designer label ES Collection with prices ranging from $18.00 to $70.00. However, Nir Zilberman of Men’s Trends Agency maintains, “The quality is far superior to comparable brands.” The difference is in the fabric. Where ES uses the fine Italian fabrics used by Prada, Gucci and other high end designer brands, Addicted exports less expensive fabrics from Spain and Portugal. “The same team who design for
ES, design for Addicted,” explains Zilberman. “The lower price-point allows them to push boundaries even further.” In addition to the stretch mesh hugging the frontal pouch (making objects appear larger than they are), Addicted’s full rear coverage pushes the buttocks up, giving it a well-defined, muscular shape. The stretch mesh in the shirts is also form shaping. Tanks are looser around the waist (more forgiving to love handles) yet tighter around the arms and chest to give the illusion of a bigger upper build. Adds Zilberman, “Many of us cheat a bit on our diets and workouts during the holidays. Addicted’s winter collection is designed so no one will know.” Addicted’s new collection is available at www.lajock.com. H

Let’s Do Brunch
Fort Lauderdale’s Best Brunch Venues By TIM SLIVINSKI
One of the most looked forward to aspects of a Sunday morning or early afternoon in Ft. Lauderdale is a leisurely Sunday Brunch. It’s fun to gather a few friends to connect over mimosas, bloody Marys, champagne, great coffee, and delicious food. However, don’t plan anything too early as some of your crew may be recovering or recuperating from a long and late Saturday night. We are lucky because we live in an area where brunch al fresco is nearly always available. Fort Lauderdale offers several options at various price points for Sunday brunch, which is a great way to get the day of rest started, no matter what your later afternoon or evening plans may be. If you desire to throw caution to the wind and go to the top – literally – for a gastronomic late morning brunch experience, then call the Pier 66 at the Hyatt Regency on 17th Street for a reservation (954-525-6666). You will not find a more beautiful view of the beach and the entire Fort Lauderdale area. As the revolving dining room spins, you will be treated to amazing views that truly showcase why the area is known as the “Venice of America.” While enjoying the views, quaff all the Veuve Cliquot you desire or mimosas made from the same
champagne that you can handle. The food options – and there are so many – tempt you from caviar tastes, to full-fledged breakfast and lunch and an assortment of dessert options. Everything is plated with attention to detail, and the food matches the elegance of the room and the champagne served. Served only on Sundays from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., this is a great choice, even at $65 per person, if you want to impress out-of-town visitors. Another classic restaurant with a great “FTL vibe,” due to its location on the Intracoastal, is the Blue Moon Fish Company (954-267-9888). This classic South Florida spot offers its brunch from 11:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. every Sunday. An omelette bar offers so many choices for the classic egg dish, but many diners choose the very well seasoned seafood offerings of Louisiana Seafood Gumbo, Blackened Mahi Mahi, or amazing Lump Crabcakes. A bloody Mary, mimosa, or champagne is included in the price. Watch the yachts meander by as you sit and enjoy the South Florida breeze, blue sky, and sunshine and savor some of the best food in the Fort Lauderdale area. And all this for $34.95 per person. If you love the Intracoastal as much as your beach-casual flip-flops, your dog, and your tank top, then head to Coconuts for their Sunday brunch (954-525-2421). With a great view of the water, Coconuts is a laid back and relaxing venue that serves a Sunday brunch from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. every Sunday. It welcomes
your dog, your beach attire, and your hungry palate. The staff are friendly and eager to please as you settle back to enjoy all that South Florida’s weather offers. The menu is amazing, but take a personal hint and listen to your server as he or she explains that particular Sunday’s brunch features. They are creative, fun, unusual, and always delicious. Combinations that sound odd always turn out to be utterly amazing on the palate. Relax, enjoy the view, and when you are satiated, head to the beach to enjoy what makes our area the envy of so much of the rest of the country. The price point for most brunch menu items ranges between $8 and $20. If you just cannot leave the island, then wander over to Rosie’s (954-563-0123) for a brunch that offers tasty, creative and fun options for a “get me started” Sunday. Beginning at 10 a.m., the Sunday brunch at Rosie’s offers relaxing smooth jazz that picks up the pace as the morning morphs into afternoon. Chuckle at menu items called such bone-tickling names as “the Fat Elvis” or the “Nelly Frittata.” From healthy to purely decadent and rich, the brunch at this popular Wilton Manors’ gathering spot offers great mimosas and bloody Marys along with endless coffee if you need a “kick me in the pants” start to your day. The eggs bene“dicts” are enough to share, while the omelettes, can be wrapped to go for a tasty lunch the following day if you just cannot finish them. Combine all that with Rosie’s tropi-
cal patio zen space, and you find yourself easily easing into Sunday morning. Depending on your hunger level, menu options vary from $8 to $16. Looking for a more traditional brunch on the island? Then maybe you need to venture into Tropics (954-537-6000). Long a staple on the Drive, Tropics offers a traditional Sunday Brunch from 10:30 a.m. until 2 p.m., featuring a buffet of favorite breakfast and lunch favorites. There’s something for everyone from omelettes to prime rib. Served in the quiet and subdued atmosphere of their dining room, the Tropics brunch is a great way to mellow out after a raucous or riotous Saturday evening. Let the world outside go by as you sit back with friends and let Tropics’ friendly and attentive wait staff attend to your whims. At $16.95 per person, it’s a great deal. Brunch is a wonderful antidote to a late night “party hearty” Saturday night or a great prelude to an afternoon at the beach or the pool. As the weather breaks and cools down, take advantage of these fine establishments and many more as you plan your relaxing Sunday. H
jean’s kitchen Alfredo Sauce Alfredo is a sauce made from cream tossed with Parmesan cheese and butter destined to accompany pasta. As the cheese melts, it emulsifies the liquids to form a smooth and rich coating on the pasta. It was named by an Italian restaurateur at his restaurant Alfredo on the Via della Scrofa in Rome. Of course, it may be mixed with any other ingredients, such as broccoli, parsley, cream, garlic, shrimp, or chicken. As the story goes, di Lelio's restaurant became famous when Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks stopped in and fell in love with the dish “Fettuccine al burro” while on their honeymoon in 1927. To express their gratitude, they gave him a golden fork and spoon along with a photo of them eating in his restaurant. He proudly displayed the photo on the wall. Pickford and Fairbanks served his dish to their friends and associates when they returned to Hollywood. Word about the new dish quickly spread. Alfredo di Lelio retired in 1938 and sold his restaurant. The new owner kept the restaurant's name, menu, traditional recipes, photos on the wall, and everything else; as of 2011, the restaurant is still in business under the name Alfredo alla Scrofa. • 1/4 cup butter
• 1 cup heavy cream • 1 clove garlic, crushed • 1 1/2 cups freshly grated Parmesan cheese • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat. Add cream and simmer for five minutes, then add garlic and cheese and whisk quickly, heating through. Stir in parsley and serve. Use your preferred Pasta ‘cause “you are the chef !” H

When A Film Becomes Known By One Word “The Ides of March” – “Moneyball” – “50/50” By WARREN DAY Three of the best films of 2011 are in theaters right now, three films that deserved to be seen by the widest audience possible, and yet they stand in danger of being sidelined by one off-putting word that might keep you and others from seeing them. For “The Ides of March,” it’s the word “politics;” for “Moneyball,” it’s “baseball;” and for “50/50,” it’s the scariest word of them all, “cancer.” To say these three excellent movies are about those three words is like saying the movie “Titantic” is about drowning. They may have as their backgrounds those three things, but what they are actually about is something far different and of a much bigger interest to the average moviegoer. “The Ides of March” is a psychological thriller about the high-stakes games people play when they want power and when they feel threatened in their efforts to obtain it. It takes place during a highly-contested presidential primary, but it could take place in Wall Street, a network news division, the company where you work, or any place where the selection of one person could make or break other careers. It stars Ryan Gosling as someone who’s torn between his conscience and his ambitions (most of us have been in that situation to some degree). Along with “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” “Drive,” and now this movie, Gosling is having one sterling showcase of a year. George Clooney also stars as the flawed Democratic candidate, and he also directed, produced, and co-wrote the screenplay. He does all of those things admirably. My qualm is that this movie feeds too easily into our cynicism that all politicians (and their staff) are shady characters – but in the present national mood, many Republicans, Democrats, and
even those who are apolitical, would say “Amen” to that. “Moneyball” is from the bestselling, non-fiction book by the same author who wrote “The Blind Side.” It’s also an inspirational story about someone who decides that the way a certain business has been run, a major league baseball team in this case, is wrong and sets about breaking all the cherished rules. Brad Pitt as the reallife Billy Beane is mesmerizing, and Jonah Hill almost steals the movie in his first dramatic part. The always good Philip Seymour Hoffman plays the beleagued team manager (he’s also in “Ides of March”). You don’t have to know baseball (any more than you have to like politics with “Ides of March”) to really enjoy watching an underdog go up against an entrenched establishment. It’s the kind of David and Goliath story that we never get tired of, particularly when it’s as well done as this one. No other movie of this or any recent year walks so many tightropes as successfully as does “50/50.” Like “Moneyball,” it is based on a true story, and it contains laughs and insights that could only come from a writer who’s lived it. “50/50” is one of the funniest films of the year, and yes it is about a 27-year-old (Joseph GordonLevitt) who has cancer. The laughs (and the tears) come from how he, his best friend (Seth Rogen in his finest role), his girlfriend, his therapist, and his mother (Anjelica Houston in a comeback role) react to that situation. It’s as emotionally moving as it is funny and one of the movies where you leave the theater feeling that sometimes the good guy does indeed finish first. One thing all three of these films have in
common is that they contain some of the best acting to be seen on the screen this year. Brad Pitt and Joseph Gordon-Levitt deserve nominations for Best Actor, and George Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jonah Hill and Anjelina Huston warrant strong consideration in the Best Supporting category. And these films remind us to be cautious whenever someone tries to sum up any movie, person, or idea in a single word, because we all know how wrong that can be when one word has been applied to ourselves--whether that word is gay or straight, young or old, white or black. If you want to see a really depressing movie, then see the ridiculously bad “Abduction” with Taylor Lautner, but if you want an exciting and fulfilling evening at the movies, make your way now to “The Ides of March,” “Moneyball,” and “50/50.” Your mind, your soul, and your funny-bone will be glad you did. Send your questions and comments to AgendaReviews@aol.com. All email will receive a response. H

Unexpected Israel A Land of Plenty... Hot Men, Sensational Beaches, and Amazing Eats By PAUL RUBIO More than an epicenter of historical and religious reverence, Israel (goisrael.com) is a land of amazing eats, gorgeous men, sensational beaches, superb wineries, big city sophistication, more gorgeous men, and iconoclastic multiculturalism. On my recent trip to the Holy Land, I crammed in as much as possible in three short days. Beginning in Haifa, then heading east to Tiberias, south to Jerusalem, and finishing in Tel Aviv, Israel never failed to disappoint. Its diverse and eclectic vibe was infectious and completely won me over. My 72-hour whirlwind journey started in Haifa, Israel’s third largest city. I ambled through the Baha'i Gardens and stopped for a number of Kodak moments overlooking the city on the slopes of Mount Carmel. Next on the agenda was the ancient Phoenician and Crusader seaport of Akko (akko.org.il/English/ main/default.asp), a UNESCO World Heritage Site that teems with the modern sights and sounds of an Arab marketplace while standing tall as one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in Israel. Towards the afternoon, I drove to the Sea of Galilee to tour some of the Christian his-
torical and holy sites, including Capernaum, the “City of Jesus,” and the Mount of Beatitudes, site of the Sermon on the Mount. After religious overload, I spent the night in Tiberias, the capital of the Lower Galilee, at the Scots Hotel (scotshotels.co.il), and gorged on platters of divine fresh seafood with hand cut fries and onion rings at the waterfront Decks restaurant (israel-guide.com/lidogalilee/decks/ index.html). The following day, I ventured south through the West Bank to Jerusalem, beginning my day with the picture-perfect panoramic views of this ancient city from the Mount of Olives. Once inside the walls of the old city, I discovered all four quarters of Old Jerusalem, exploring every major historical and religious site like Via Dolorosa (Stations of the Cross), the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and Judaism’s most sacred site, the Western Wall (but not before a break for Middle Eastern delights in the Arab Market.) I checked into the posh Mamilla Hotel, (mamillahotel.com) where eclectic modernist interiors prevail behind a splendid façade that camouflages with the old city. The new Mammilla Hotel is the country’s most
design savvy, with a few surprise elements I’ve yet to see anywhere else in the world – like the tri-partitioned colossal glass bathroom, which turns from contemporary peepshow to private sanctuary when you push a switch to release liquid crystals to frost the enveloping glass walls. Sounds almost too cool to believe? Well it is! Before leaving Jerusalem on the third day of our “Intense Israel” itinerary, I spent the morning at Yad Vashem (yadvashem.org), the National Memorial and Museum of the Holocaust – definitely heavy on the soul but beautifully and artistically presented. By mid afternoon, I had arrived in Tel Aviv, Israel’s bustling cultural center, ripe with a beachfront buzz, world famous nightlife, and its NYC – style frenetic pace. It was a Monday night, but there was no shortage of party options (and eye candy) to keep me going until the next morning! Though the nightclub Lima Lima fell from hetero-grace in late 2010, it’s Monday night gay night is the hottest ticket in town. At 1 a.m., the club was jam packed with way-too-many hot army boys, looking to start their week off with a bang … literally! On a more serious note, throughout
my visit, my tour guides always made it a point to explain Israel’s importance in world history, far more than its current role as a religious and political puppet. They introduced me to religions and peoples I knew little about – like the Baha’i and Druze – and how these groups prosper in modern-day Israel. They also made it a point to show me the Israel we never see or hear about – Muslims, Christians, and Jews working together, eating in each other’s restaurants, and living in their own world of mutual respect. I discovered an Israel so different than I had imagined – one, which quickly instigated an insatiable desire to return and explore further. H

Mix Magic Moran! The Florida Agenda Speaks with DJ Tony Moran By SEBASTIAN DARBY It’s been two years since Grammynominated DJ Tony Moran has released a full album. At long last, he makes his triumphant return to the dance floor with MIX MAGIC MUSIC, a CD fully penned by Moran but being released under his new moniker, Sugar House Crew. The album embraces the soul, sympathy and conviction of club music. Its first single, “Can I Love You More” (featuring Trey Lorenz), hit dance floors this summer and nabbed the top spot on Masterbeat in a record breaking three days. The album’s next release will be a double diva maxi mix featuring two leading ladies of the dance floor: Jennifer Holiday’s “Magic” and Deborah Cox’s “Tenderness.” Tony Moran celebrates the release of MIX MAGIC MUSIC at Score this Saturday, October 15. GET OUT: Why did you name the album MIX MAGIC MUSIC? The album was originally going to be called Magic, but I wanted something that more specifically encapsulated my true feelings of dance music. The phrase “mix that magic through music” came to me and I knew it was perfect. Instead of releasing the album under your name, you’re releasing it under the moniker Sugar House Crew. Why? The album was a collaborative effort. I called upon my pool of extraordinary talent who graciously poured their time and creativity into its creation. I would have been remiss to assume solo credit.
The many collaborators are my crew and they added their sugar to the album. How did you get Jennifer Holliday to record Magic? I was in a recording studio, banging my head over who would be able to carry the song’s powerful message. Then, as I walked outside the studio, I looked up at a billboard announcing Jennifer Holliday performing that night at Lincoln Center. I called her and asked if she could stop by the studio. She came in, loved it, and recorded Magic the next day. It truly was magic! Deborah Cox is perfect on “Tenderness!” “Tenderness” is about love, hurt, angst and joy; all in one. It’s extremely personal, which made it perfect for Deborah. Deborah Cox does not sing songs, she shares stories that fans feel in their souls. What do you love most about dance music? There is a unique love that emanates from dance music. It does more than make people move. Dance music inspires a level of passion, devotion, faith and satisfaction. I feel it every time I’m making music in the studio and when I’m playing it in the DJ booth. Tony Moran spins Score, 727 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach, FL on Saturday, October 16. For more information on MIX MAGIC MUSIC, visit www.tonymoran.com.

Fed Up and Burnt Out? Don’t Give Up Yet! Presenting some surefire tips on how to light a fire under your workouts. By TOM BONANTI Staying fit takes more than just pumping iron and downing protein shakes. You must have patience and practice persistence and consistency. Whether you’re a bona fide pro, or just an average guy trying to get into shape, there comes a time when you feel a little frustrated, burned out and, yes, even a little bored. Just as there are a zillion ways to get fit, there are the same numbers of ways to keep up your mojo in the gym. Make working out your special “me” time. Pressures and hassles abound at work and even at home. When you’re at the gym, you are building your body first and foremost for yourself. Shut out all mental distractions. Limit conversation. If you’re working out with a partner or trainer, make sure that accomplishing your routine comes before socializing. Lock your cell phone away somewhere. Tune in to some high energy music and kick ass in the gym – your ass! Stay focused on using correct form and feeling the burn with each muscle contraction. Stay in tune with your body, how you feel, what you are thinking as your body goes through the marvelous changes that accompany working out. Everyone needs short-term and longterm goals to work toward while in the gym. Otherwise, you’re left spinning your
wheels. Periodize your training by setting long-term goals for the year. Break up the year into shorter two or three month periods, each with its own goals. A short-term goal might be wiggling that hot ass of yours into a new bathing suit. There’s no better long-term goal for working out than anticipating all the new friends you’ll make on the Atlantis Cruise you’re taking early next year. Whatever it is, give yourself something to look forward to! And hell, while you’re sculpting that gorgeous body, you may even be improving your health by lowering your blood pressure and building cardio-vascular strength! Insanity has been defined as doing the same things, the same way, all of the time-and expecting different results. The same can be said about your workouts as well. Think of ways to vary routines without losing the progress you’ve made. Check out the strides you can make with interval training or circuit training. Change from the same old machines you use at the gym to more free weights. Change the days you work out and the time of day you hit the gym. Change gyms if necessary. Just remember, change can be a very good and exciting thing. Book your workouts into your sched-
ule. Your workouts are as essential and vital to your well being as business meetings, power lunches and conference calls. Furthermore, any boyfriend, boss or co-worker that doesn’t understand your commitment to working out needs a reality check. A fit spouse makes a better lover and happier companion. A healthy employee is less likely to have “down time” being puny and sick. Try to make each workout fun and productive. Remember to set goals and stay consistent. Fitness is a lifetime commitment. You owe it to yourself, Gorgeous! For more inspiration, contact TrainerTomB@aol.com! H
